0:00:40 > 0:00:47Hello everyone, welcome to the world Indoor Bowls Championships at the

0:00:47 > 0:00:52Potters Resort in Great Yarmouth. A great crowd N about 1,300 people

0:00:52 > 0:00:55expected this afternoon and they, like us are expecting an exciting

0:00:55 > 0:00:56afternoon of bowls.

0:00:58 > 0:01:08First up on this famous Blue Rink, the mixed pairs final. Scotland's

0:01:08 > 0:01:14Darren Burnett and Rebecca Field now face the Anglo--Scott partnership of

0:01:14 > 0:01:19Jamie Chestney and Lesly Doig, who themselves come through a

0:01:19 > 0:01:26heart-fought semifinal. After that we are into the second

0:01:26 > 0:01:30round singles action. The winner of last November's Scottish

0:01:30 > 0:01:34International open, David Gourlay, continues his quest for a seconder

0:01:34 > 0:01:42world skap world Singles Title a mere 22 years after his first.

0:01:42 > 0:01:46His opponent is Mark Dawes, Englishman, fresh from celebrating

0:01:46 > 0:01:50his Pairs World Title victory yesterday with Jamie Chesney. This

0:01:50 > 0:01:55promises to be an afternoon of Potters' magic. The mixed pairs

0:01:55 > 0:01:58final coming up later but let's focus on the sippingles first of all

0:01:58 > 0:02:01and what the draw for the second round looked like at the start of

0:02:01 > 0:02:02today:

0:02:02 > 0:02:07round looked like at the start of today:

0:02:27 > 0:02:33But the first match today took place and featured the 2014 champion,

0:02:33 > 0:02:43Darren Burnett up against Jamie Chestney. Here is what happened.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46These players will be facing one another again in the missioned pairs

0:02:46 > 0:02:50final this afternoon. This was the first time they met in a singles

0:02:50 > 0:02:54competition in a World Bowls Tour event. Little to separate them

0:02:54 > 0:02:58during the opening exchanges with the lead swinging both ways. Going

0:02:58 > 0:03:01into the eighth end, Burnett was trailing by one, before producing

0:03:01 > 0:03:05this well-judged forehand draw for a double and a slender advantage and

0:03:05 > 0:03:08the set was effectively decided by the outcome of two drives in the

0:03:08 > 0:03:13last end and the finest of margins. Burnett's third bowl couldn't have

0:03:13 > 0:03:18worked out better. While Chesney's excellent reply just couldn't

0:03:18 > 0:03:22deliver the right result. The first set going the way of the 41-year-old

0:03:22 > 0:03:30policeman. Jamie Chestney had his breakthrough

0:03:30 > 0:03:33World Bowls' tour win last year in Blackpool but today the luck

0:03:33 > 0:03:36deserted him. Another runner in the fifth end of the second set and

0:03:36 > 0:03:40another awful result. The pivotal moment in the second set

0:03:40 > 0:03:45came in the 7th end when the 2014 World Champion capitalised on loose

0:03:45 > 0:03:49play from Chestney. This long draw for Burnett enough for a double and

0:03:49 > 0:03:54the first bit of daylight between them.

0:03:54 > 0:03:58Chest in any did claw a shot back to need him leaving a triple to save

0:03:58 > 0:04:03the match T wasn't to be. Burnett was in full control and took the set

0:04:03 > 0:04:089-4 to book his place in the quarter times and a match against Paul

0:04:08 > 0:04:09Foster or Jason Greenslade.

0:04:09 > 0:04:11times and a match against Paul Foster or Jason Greenslade.

0:04:11 > 0:04:15So Darren Burnett is the first player to book a slot in the

0:04:15 > 0:04:18quarterfinals. One of seven former champions in the event:

0:04:22 > 0:04:29In the second half of the draw a very strong line-up there as well:

0:04:29 > 0:04:35Niki Brett and Mervyn King both former champions. Greg Harlow we saw

0:04:35 > 0:04:37winning his first-round match yesterday.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40David Corkhill will be in the commentary box all afternoon, all

0:04:40 > 0:04:41evening, every

0:04:41 > 0:04:43commentary box all afternoon, all evening, every day.

0:04:43 > 0:04:47Looking forward to the singles first of all. I talk about the quality

0:04:47 > 0:04:50every year, we are talking about seven former champions still left.

0:04:50 > 0:04:54Who are are the standout ones for you?We have to look at current

0:04:54 > 0:04:59form. The main current form, David Gourlay having won Scotland and Greg

0:04:59 > 0:05:03Harlow on his home turf, so to speak. He works here and spends a

0:05:03 > 0:05:06lot of time. He is always comfortable but it is when we get

0:05:06 > 0:05:10down to the quarter times when we know what is going on. Really it is

0:05:10 > 0:05:15normally one of six at that stage, possibly even one of seven. We saw

0:05:15 > 0:05:19Darren been et and Jamie Chestney in action this morning -- Darren

0:05:19 > 0:05:24Burnett. They are part of the mixed pairs final today. Talk us through

0:05:24 > 0:05:27to today. After that match this morning, they felt that would have

0:05:27 > 0:05:30no bearing ahead of the final? . It is won't have any bearing, really,

0:05:30 > 0:05:35the game was so close. Now we did see there on the replays just a

0:05:35 > 0:05:41couple of results, we got an ooh and an aah from the crowd, who haven't

0:05:41 > 0:05:46seen it before. You say - hang on, one or two bowls here and there but

0:05:46 > 0:05:53Darren Burnett is such a good match player. He is so hard to beat. Every

0:05:53 > 0:05:59shot you against him you have to play. He is so good. Talk about the

0:05:59 > 0:06:03ladies playing today. Less familiar on this rink is Lesley DoigThe

0:06:03 > 0:06:06thing about Lesly is she has been comfortable, what I have seen of her

0:06:06 > 0:06:11but she's coming off the back much very good success elsewhere. Runner

0:06:11 > 0:06:14up in the World Outdoor in Christchurch. I watched that match I

0:06:14 > 0:06:19was there. She showed a maturity. It lifts you up and to be truthful. She

0:06:19 > 0:06:23will fear nothing in this.It makes up for an exciting afternoon. Let's

0:06:23 > 0:06:29remind you of what we have coming up this afternoon with the final. It's

0:06:29 > 0:06:33Darren Burnett and Rebecca Field up against Jamie Chestney and Lesley

0:06:33 > 0:06:38Doig in the final of the mixed pairs. The former sees two sets,

0:06:38 > 0:06:43nine ends. And if we get to the tie-break, it is the best of three

0:06:43 > 0:06:45ends. An exciting time for all four

0:06:45 > 0:06:55players. We can hear from the four finalists.

0:07:08 > 0:07:12The mixed pair is a great event. The teams are tight. You know the

0:07:12 > 0:07:16matcheses are likely to be good. But it is game time time, it is good to

0:07:16 > 0:07:21get a run. It keeps you on the rink. He have has the focus on the singles

0:07:21 > 0:07:24but mixed pairs is great. Game time is what you need and what we are

0:07:24 > 0:07:28getting.This is my seventh year. I think I played with six ditch

0:07:28 > 0:07:36partners now. Only once do I play in a row. And that was a fluke. It was

0:07:36 > 0:07:41two draws that happened. I told him he must have got unlucky, twice.

0:07:41 > 0:07:46It's strange. Before this event jaily and I had never spoken to each

0:07:46 > 0:07:52other. So a wee bit of us getting to know each other and just enjoying it

0:07:52 > 0:07:57at the same time.We had a very brief chat before we played. And the

0:07:57 > 0:08:01secret, I think has been we have had confidence in what each other wants

0:08:01 > 0:08:06to do. So Lesley told me before the game the hands and lengths she

0:08:06 > 0:08:12prefers to play. Then she has really sort of encourages me to play the

0:08:12 > 0:08:16shots that I see, which is eye deal for myself, and gone well so far.

0:08:16 > 0:08:20The potential for the game is to be exciting. Probably Jamie and I are

0:08:20 > 0:08:25probably two of the most attacking players on the men's side. You know,

0:08:25 > 0:08:29so I would expect the two of us to have a good battle. Whoever comes

0:08:29 > 0:08:33out on top of that, will the one who attacks more, we are probably two of

0:08:33 > 0:08:38the most attacking players. We are probably the most attacking players,

0:08:38 > 0:08:42but, yes, you can only play those shots if you have the bowls around

0:08:42 > 0:08:49to be able to do that. So Bex is a good friend of mine and my wife's.

0:08:49 > 0:08:53We spent new year together in Exeter not long ago. It'll be another

0:08:53 > 0:08:57enjoyable final it play in.It would mean an awful lot. It is a world

0:08:57 > 0:09:02trophy. You want to pick them up, as many as you can. It has been a long

0:09:02 > 0:09:05time since I won here, since then I have had three finals where I have

0:09:05 > 0:09:09not been the winner. A big game for me, I'm looking forward to it. I

0:09:09 > 0:09:14would like to lay my hands on a trophy. This is NICE experience of

0:09:14 > 0:09:18an event like this. To be able to come away a World Champion t would

0:09:18 > 0:09:29be unbelievable. # It takes two baby

0:09:29 > 0:09:35# To make a dream come true ins will be will be This trophy means a lot

0:09:35 > 0:09:38to all four players and this is how they managed to get through to the

0:09:38 > 0:09:41final:

0:09:49 > 0:09:52Let's not keep the players waiting any longer. Let's join our MC and

0:09:52 > 0:09:53say hello to Richard.

0:09:53 > 0:09:54any longer. Let's join our MC and say hello to Richard.

0:09:54 > 0:09:59Thank you very much. An air of excitement here in the international

0:09:59 > 0:10:02arena for the prospect of what we hope is going to be yet another

0:10:02 > 0:10:12thrilling final. So, leak, it's now a chance not just for the men but

0:10:12 > 0:10:15for the ladies -- so, ladies and gentlemen, it is not just a chance

0:10:15 > 0:10:25for the men to shine but the ladies as well. Ladies and gentlemen, last

0:10:25 > 0:10:27year's finalist, Rebecca Field and Darren Burnett.

0:10:27 > 0:10:30APPLAUSE

0:10:37 > 0:10:39APPLAUSE

0:10:49 > 0:10:55And they take on a former women's outdoor single silver medallist

0:10:55 > 0:10:59Lesley Doig and the reigning world indoor pairs champion, Jamie

0:10:59 > 0:11:02Chestney.

0:11:04 > 0:11:06APPLAUSE

0:11:16 > 0:11:16Lesley

0:11:21 > 0:11:26Another great atmosphere at Potters this afternoon. Corky has taken his

0:11:26 > 0:11:30seat in the commentary box and John Price is alongside him. Good

0:11:30 > 0:11:38afternoon, gentlemen. COMMENTATOR:: Good afternoon, Rishi.

0:11:38 > 0:11:43There is an air of excitement about this match no, doubt about it. There

0:11:43 > 0:11:49has been it has been traditional that the women play a lead role. It

0:11:49 > 0:11:55can be reversed if the players so wish to do so.

0:11:59 > 0:12:09But when you have the two players of this calibre on your team, you want

0:12:09 > 0:12:15them to be going last John?Yes, they said in the interview they were

0:12:15 > 0:12:19attacking players. So expect excitement. A few fireworks during

0:12:19 > 0:12:23the game.Three bowl pairs, of course. It makes a difference. Nine

0:12:23 > 0:12:36ends.Great start, really good. The first two sets, and a tie-break,

0:12:36 > 0:12:43three bowls does allow for a lot more shots to be played.

0:12:48 > 0:12:59Well, two good lead bowls.A very good start by both ladies. These two

0:12:59 > 0:13:03players won't be phased by the occasion. Very experienced.

0:13:22 > 0:13:30Another bowl in the head. The players, of course have had an

0:13:30 > 0:13:33opportunity to practice before this game. Another advantage of not

0:13:33 > 0:13:36playing the second match in the afternoon, where you only get two

0:13:36 > 0:13:37ends.

0:13:40 > 0:13:52That's good stuff, isn't it? Four bowl, all around it.

0:13:52 > 0:13:54bowl, all around it.Well, the opening session, and there is an

0:13:54 > 0:13:56advantage to get a feel of the rink.

0:13:58 > 0:14:07Of course there are things going on, on the rink before that, a lot of

0:14:07 > 0:14:10preparation and the crowd being entertained. Oh, that's a good bowl

0:14:10 > 0:14:17there. Well, she might have to match that.

0:14:33 > 0:14:38Well Lesley setting it wide. Letting it drift in.

0:14:38 > 0:14:43Yes, strong biassed bowls she's using but I'm not sure they'll be

0:14:43 > 0:14:46able to keep this standard up for the whole of the match but it is

0:14:46 > 0:14:51certainly very good stuff.Six very good bowls to start with and

0:14:51 > 0:14:59opportunities for the two guys now to play some conversion bowls.

0:15:36 > 0:15:43Jamie and Darren will be sick of the sight of each other after today. It

0:15:43 > 0:15:50all depends who wins. If Jamie loses this, he certainly will be. But so

0:15:50 > 0:15:53hard to score against Darren Burnett, the way he plays the game.

0:15:53 > 0:15:59A tough competitor.Playing that reaching weight. Just trying to pull

0:15:59 > 0:16:02the jack through.

0:16:07 > 0:16:11He is very quick on the mat, Jamie. He always has been. He plays

0:16:11 > 0:16:15international bowls like that as well. He is trying his best, but

0:16:15 > 0:16:21looking into the back. That's a good bowl there.

0:16:31 > 0:16:39Options for Darren. Darren he can play the best weight. If he can go a

0:16:39 > 0:16:42bit furtherer, he has the best back.

0:16:44 > 0:16:50Just drawing weight. Looks better.

0:16:53 > 0:16:59Hurry, hurry, up, up, up.Played it well.

0:16:59 > 0:17:01APPLAUSE Well, there is that encouragement to

0:17:01 > 0:17:07the bowl. Of course, it can't listen to her, but it is all part of the

0:17:07 > 0:17:12gameJust where he wanted it, nestled into the Greens.Yes and

0:17:12 > 0:17:17there is a deep red bowl lurking at the back.

0:17:31 > 0:17:36Jamie needs to come off the of that red bowl to squeeze it through the

0:17:36 > 0:17:43two greens. He doesn't want it going straight through the gap.He is just

0:17:43 > 0:17:48playing a draw to it. A very conservative.Giving it a chance.

0:17:48 > 0:17:57Excellent try.If he drops, he will get the shot. Oh, he hasn't.

0:18:06 > 0:18:12Great start. Good head of bowls.

0:18:15 > 0:18:19Some player are interested why the skip's name comes first? It doesn't

0:18:19 > 0:18:24necessarily have to be that way. It's just been tra tra digs in this

0:18:24 > 0:18:31event. The name's come out, put it that way. But as I say, they can

0:18:31 > 0:18:36swap around if they see it fit to do so, in between rounds but I can't

0:18:36 > 0:18:41remember anybody ever doing it.

0:18:49 > 0:18:54All the bay back, looks good here. Looks really good.

0:19:28 > 0:19:35Come on, back you come. Come on, around your own is OK. Yeah, good.

0:19:43 > 0:19:47Well, a big drawing bowl that Rebecca is using.

0:19:54 > 0:19:59Sometimes the rink changes in between sessions.Well done. You can

0:19:59 > 0:20:02tighten up a wee bit.

0:20:06 > 0:20:13Much better track. Much better track. Come on, run in. Come on,

0:20:13 > 0:20:20run, run.Darren urging it to run. It's pretty good. It's going to drop

0:20:20 > 0:20:27a little bit short but it is very good.I think that's the shot

0:20:27 > 0:20:30anyway. You can stick with that, draw the shot into there. If you get

0:20:30 > 0:20:33down here, it's good.

0:20:48 > 0:20:53Missed the red.Wanted to get around that red bowl into position. The

0:20:53 > 0:20:56trouble for Jamie here now is that he's got a shot against him, he

0:20:56 > 0:21:02would like to attack it but there is no back position, JohnNo, there is

0:21:02 > 0:21:09a lot of position through the jack. A fairly God shot on the forearm

0:21:09 > 0:21:12side, where he could lift the green bowl.

0:21:17 > 0:21:21Darren plays first and could alter this.

0:21:23 > 0:21:28He needs this to run a little bit to pass the two short bowls. Oh, there

0:21:28 > 0:21:35you go. That's a very good position there.Jamie is on the to the

0:21:35 > 0:21:41forehand side. Looking to lift the green A safer shot. Wouldn't want it

0:21:41 > 0:21:45get the red into the jack. Anything down that side is good. He

0:21:45 > 0:21:49overplayed it deliberately to get past the jack but a little bit too

0:21:49 > 0:21:53strong. Gone too deep.

0:22:12 > 0:22:16A good weight for the shot to roll into the jack.Any movement on the

0:22:16 > 0:22:23jack will bring one more or more into the count.

0:22:25 > 0:22:31Worth having a go on this?Yeah, on you go.You can see he is

0:22:31 > 0:22:36contemplating more weight. Trying to take the danger as well. He has to

0:22:36 > 0:22:43be careful not to take his own bowl out.In the area. Will he get the

0:22:43 > 0:22:51run through? Not sure. Very close. It was a good shot. He pulled the

0:22:51 > 0:22:58danger away. Even if he is one-down it is a better position for him.

0:23:26 > 0:23:30Well, Darren can afford to drive at this, depending on the weight. Play

0:23:30 > 0:23:35stronger at it. He has the back position.

0:23:37 > 0:23:42He does play the backhand very well. Favoured the in his singles match.

0:23:42 > 0:23:49On a good line here to get to the bowl or passes it.He is looking for

0:23:49 > 0:23:57a tap on the bowl. Always good, on the line.

0:23:57 > 0:24:00the line. He just didn't fancy the stronger shot but the arriving draw

0:24:00 > 0:24:07was always a good option, John.He played it to perfection.

0:24:09 > 0:24:15Difficult to get that bowl out. Really hard. He might just have to

0:24:15 > 0:24:22try and draw this. Well, he could play the forehand just to raise his

0:24:22 > 0:24:26green into the red and spring the jack on to his back green. It is not

0:24:26 > 0:24:33a bad shot to play. Other than that, he has an open draw on the backhand,

0:24:33 > 0:24:38coming on the same line as Darren's delivery. What you are really

0:24:38 > 0:24:42talking about is to play that and just a little touch to move the

0:24:42 > 0:24:46Jacques. The alternative is if he wants to come under, he can play

0:24:46 > 0:24:52under the line to try to get the bowl out clean.Another option.

0:24:52 > 0:24:56There is a draw shot on the backhand. This is complicated. He

0:24:56 > 0:25:01can't afford to move the jack too far if he wants to get the shot. But

0:25:01 > 0:25:07there is a direct line into the bowl with controlled weight. The good

0:25:07 > 0:25:10thing is, he has a couple of choices. It is what he is confident

0:25:10 > 0:25:16about playing.

0:25:18 > 0:25:29Yes, going for the controlled weight. Not a full drive.Oh, that

0:25:29 > 0:25:33really is a super shot he has played.

0:25:35 > 0:25:47Definitely one. Hard to tell. He had to thread the needle there. He

0:25:47 > 0:25:50probably would've preferred it clean because it was two or certain. He

0:25:50 > 0:25:54played it really well. We said he had three options, he chose the

0:25:54 > 0:25:59right one there.

0:26:00 > 0:26:09right one there. One green, pleasure for second. -- measure for second.

0:26:16 > 0:26:22Always hard when the jack is in the ditch, to judge the distances,

0:26:22 > 0:26:28because you have to drop down the few inches. A green ball against the

0:26:28 > 0:26:34reds.

0:26:45 > 0:26:51He is getting some help.

0:27:02 > 0:27:04One shot, Chestney and Doig.

0:27:07 > 0:27:11Well the extra bowls, of course make a difference, John and those sort of

0:27:11 > 0:27:15shots are available in this match. Jamie will play those and he is very

0:27:15 > 0:27:22direct.

0:27:27 > 0:27:33The thing is, it all extends the ends quite considerably because of

0:27:33 > 0:27:36the conversations the skip and the lead will have.

0:28:05 > 0:28:09The line is really good. Come on, last bit. The last bit here, you are

0:28:09 > 0:28:16really good. Yeah.Oh, just slipping past the bowl.

0:28:20 > 0:28:26That was an interesting combination, wasn't it? -- there are always

0:28:26 > 0:28:29interesting combinations, Scotland and England. But not in the right

0:28:29 > 0:28:41format.Well-played.That was well-played from Lesley.

0:28:41 > 0:28:45well-played from Lesley. She a plays at international level. Renowned for

0:28:45 > 0:28:49being a solid lead, front-end player. She's developing her game.

0:28:49 > 0:28:53The success she had in New Zealand in the World Outdoor will give her

0:28:53 > 0:28:58confidence. She has all the talent in the world.

0:29:01 > 0:29:10Sorry.The weight is good.

0:29:18 > 0:29:24That's good.Another useful bowl. Just in behind.

0:29:36 > 0:29:45God to bend. Up you come so. Up you come.

0:29:45 > 0:29:54come. -- got to end.Just a little bit there. If Darren decides to go

0:29:54 > 0:30:01quicker at it, he could get a little borrow off it.

0:30:13 > 0:30:22Come on. Up you come. Very good. Come on. Just get by now. Great try.

0:30:22 > 0:30:27Nearly got past it which would have been really good. It's protected the

0:30:27 > 0:30:30jack.

0:30:30 > 0:30:40Darren can still get through the gap for the bowl.

0:30:46 > 0:30:51Try there?I think you could really keep it there. One turn on your Roan

0:30:51 > 0:30:55is good enough, or even if you slip round to here.

0:31:02 > 0:31:12I think he knows he's on the narrow side of this.

0:31:15 > 0:31:19Need that pace. That is the shot for Darren coming inside the bowl or

0:31:19 > 0:31:26getting the edge of the bowl. Takes him on to the green. Doesn't need a

0:31:26 > 0:31:32lot of weight.

0:31:47 > 0:31:59The line goes very quick.Margin of error on that side is minimal.

0:32:02 > 0:32:09Drawing careful on the back hand.

0:32:14 > 0:32:24He gets past any of the red bowls, that's good.

0:32:24 > 0:32:29that's good.No, no.Darren is going to play something different here.

0:32:29 > 0:32:37Bit more weight to it.

0:32:39 > 0:32:43Wants the edge of the bowl. Doesn't want to go anywhere near the front

0:32:43 > 0:32:48one.That's the only problem isn't it. If he got the edge of the jack,

0:32:48 > 0:32:53it could go pear-shaped.He'll slide off the green bowl then. Yes. He's

0:32:53 > 0:33:00just looking for the edge of the green one. Although he's looking

0:33:00 > 0:33:03like he's playing fairly close to draw weight.Very conservative on

0:33:03 > 0:33:09the weight. Can't blame him, to be truthful. It was a hairy one.

0:33:10 > 0:33:15APPLAUSE. If the shot is going to be so

0:33:15 > 0:33:24valuable in this match, he can't afford to take too many risks.

0:33:24 > 0:33:28If we look back to the players yesterday, it was one end, that big

0:33:28 > 0:33:33five that turned that game. These players will be aware of that. Can't

0:33:33 > 0:33:43afford to drop any big scores.No. Previously, of

0:33:43 > 0:33:48Previously, of course, before bowls, well...Extra one five. If you pick

0:33:48 > 0:33:51up a five you should win the set.

0:33:59 > 0:34:01Great weight.

0:34:07 > 0:34:21Simple action Rebecca. Easy delivery.Tall girl.

0:34:38 > 0:34:43Similar with Lesley, verbal smooth action. Step forward.

0:34:48 > 0:34:55In the north of England, same way, lots of heavy Europeans the start of

0:34:55 > 0:35:00the season -- heavy greens.

0:35:00 > 0:35:03Everybody starts to play outdoor in April.

0:35:14 > 0:35:24Nice follow-through.

0:35:47 > 0:35:59This is never a bad thing when you think about it.

0:36:16 > 0:36:25Jamie is a bit under the line. I think he can afford to be positive,

0:36:25 > 0:36:29getting that jack through a bit. There's nothing for green at the

0:36:29 > 0:36:30back.

0:36:32 > 0:36:36Second prize is, if he goes under the jack, it comes to the green.

0:36:36 > 0:36:40That's the second. Right on the line here again.

0:36:40 > 0:36:44APPLAUSE.

0:36:44 > 0:36:51If you are going to go, you go with this one.Rebecca's ball fell so

0:36:51 > 0:36:55it's pretty close for three.I think he has to play through this. At

0:36:55 > 0:36:59least with this one he's got a chance to recover it if it goes

0:36:59 > 0:37:09wrong.

0:37:12 > 0:37:18Nice! APPLAUSE.

0:37:19 > 0:37:25He'll struggle to beat that.

0:37:28 > 0:37:32Bit of good space if he got connection on the red. Back into

0:37:32 > 0:37:37line with the jack. He's probably about ten inches away from it.Good

0:37:37 > 0:37:42effort.

0:37:43 > 0:37:54effort.Really good second shot.

0:37:54 > 0:38:01He can go as close as thobing get a second bowl to the ditch. Inside the

0:38:01 > 0:38:10line.

0:38:10 > 0:38:14Fairly impossible to get shot.

0:38:21 > 0:38:26May as well give it a go in case he can get in front and over the edge.

0:38:26 > 0:38:29Defy gravity.

0:38:36 > 0:38:41APPLAUSE.

0:39:41 > 0:39:53Great line here. APPLAUSE.

0:40:15 > 0:40:20Rebecca's mum is normally here with her on these events at Potters. But

0:40:20 > 0:40:33not today. She's working, I believe in a primary school.

0:40:42 > 0:40:46I can almost hear the kids at the primary school cheering for her.

0:40:46 > 0:40:57Which would be lovely. Good effort.

0:41:20 > 0:41:31Looks good all the way. It suddenly contracts into a white mark,

0:41:31 > 0:41:38indicating a toucher. The ball goes into the ditch.

0:41:43 > 0:41:51Very useful and handy. Always remember to wipe it off though.

0:42:09 > 0:42:13Can't see the two bowls going without the jack.If he gets the red

0:42:13 > 0:42:25going, the jack will move, yes.

0:42:38 > 0:42:45The danger is, if you play that... If you get the touching bowl on to

0:42:45 > 0:42:51the jack, you're in a heap of trouble.They play in wait looking

0:42:51 > 0:43:00for a good connection.Very close. Well played. Might have played the

0:43:00 > 0:43:04forehand but...The way he was sitting on the green was locking the

0:43:04 > 0:43:14other red in.The angle wasn't right on the back hand shot.

0:43:17 > 0:43:26I need to get another one in, I think.

0:43:26 > 0:43:37think.I would be tempted to go for another close bowl, to be honest.

0:43:48 > 0:43:55Up you come. Run, run, run... It's not up but it's a very useful

0:43:55 > 0:44:00bowl. It's going to make life a little more difficult. Still a

0:44:00 > 0:44:08chance on the forehand.A little bit more control. Where he gets the jack

0:44:08 > 0:44:11he's got a chance. You are talking about this one here, John, to make

0:44:11 > 0:44:18that work, to get back into things. It's also off the red too. Also what

0:44:18 > 0:44:23he's looking for is a jack movement down over to this direction.

0:44:25 > 0:44:32The respot is also there if he gets an angle on things. That's the

0:44:32 > 0:44:42respot over here. All sorts of options.

0:44:55 > 0:45:00A good run-through.

0:45:00 > 0:45:10APPLAUSE. Good, solid connection.The key to

0:45:10 > 0:45:20that was the weight.

0:45:26 > 0:45:31Not ideal to get the green bowl on plant. He could drop the three or

0:45:31 > 0:45:37four if it went wrong.That is what he's looking at.There is a red in

0:45:37 > 0:45:43the back of the head.

0:46:01 > 0:46:06That is useful. That jack moves, but there is a big danger if it goes on

0:46:06 > 0:46:14to the respot position. Jacks have been going up the green as well.

0:46:14 > 0:46:22Playing the back hand side.See what happens. All on the angle of, if he

0:46:22 > 0:46:25gets to the jack, the front plant is an option.

0:46:27 > 0:46:37APPLAUSE.

0:46:54 > 0:46:58Good conversion shots by the two skips.

0:47:13 > 0:47:18Players spend a lot of time with each other at this venue, more so

0:47:18 > 0:47:20than any other venue.

0:47:23 > 0:47:27Sitting down for lunch today and Nicky Brett was there, I said what

0:47:27 > 0:47:33do you think of the pairs. Nicky said Mark Dawes was the problem

0:47:33 > 0:47:39because he played really well in the pairs final.

0:47:39 > 0:47:48Dawes is coming up the rankings and a very dangerous player.

0:47:52 > 0:48:02All the way up now. All the way up. Very good.

0:48:03 > 0:48:13An inch off the jack.Stay with it? Get a close one in. It will be

0:48:13 > 0:48:21fascinating with Mark and David Gourlay...

0:48:41 > 0:48:45Anything drawing down to here is good.

0:48:45 > 0:48:52Needs to get on to the green bowl. Rolls the red away. Little bit heavy

0:48:52 > 0:48:56but that is the option of coming behind then which is good. Actually

0:48:56 > 0:49:01not so much heavy, the weight was perfect, just missed it by a shade.

0:49:01 > 0:49:04Keep the shot cold. If you miss you will go to that position so you will

0:49:04 > 0:49:11be more than happy with that.

0:49:53 > 0:49:55Narrowing the target.

0:49:58 > 0:50:03He's probable playing that a little bit firmer. Missed that line. That's

0:50:03 > 0:50:07the problem there. If you play that kind of weight, you pull it. Very

0:50:07 > 0:50:10difficult.

0:50:10 > 0:50:15Probably the least accommodating for that particular type of shot.

0:50:22 > 0:50:25Sometimes you're sucked into playing these type of bowls. Looks like the

0:50:25 > 0:50:32shot to play. It's so very difficult on this rink.Very good bowl here.

0:50:32 > 0:50:37Well done.

0:50:40 > 0:50:44Well done. It's not easy. The jack goes back the wrong way and he's in

0:50:44 > 0:50:49a heap of trouble. Back to the draw. 4-1 up. Can't afford to lose a

0:50:49 > 0:50:54single. Don't want to give Darren a chance to make multiples from it.

0:50:59 > 0:51:04What a line!

0:51:04 > 0:51:13Gap of about ten, 12 inches.

0:51:31 > 0:51:35Any movement on the jack would be good.As long as it doesn't fall

0:51:35 > 0:51:39back and move it. APPLAUSE.

0:51:39 > 0:51:44I think Rebecca was holding her breath for a moment.

0:51:44 > 0:51:48Played it really well though, Darren. The weight was great for the

0:51:48 > 0:51:53shot.

0:51:53 > 0:52:06Jamie is in a heap of trouble here. The back position's just not right.

0:52:06 > 0:52:17He's got nothing but a draw here. Everything's blocked off.

0:52:44 > 0:52:56Still two down. Perfect line in, just gave up at the last moment.

0:53:00 > 0:53:09Darren doesn't want to drop back again.

0:53:10 > 0:53:17If he was chasing shots it would be different. When you are lying with

0:53:17 > 0:53:26three ends to go, you know, it's... Front touch will do.The back hand

0:53:26 > 0:53:32isn't doing much for him. The jack comes out and it's not clever. Has

0:53:32 > 0:53:37to be a front toucher, the forehand. Doesn't want to be a back one.

0:53:37 > 0:53:43That's the danger, falling back. You can play a perfect bowl and go a

0:53:43 > 0:53:50shot down here. Really close if he runs on that line. You can encourage

0:53:50 > 0:53:58it all you want but it's not going to make it.Very, very good end.

0:53:58 > 0:54:05Excellent bowling.

0:54:51 > 0:54:58The line's really good.

0:55:18 > 0:55:28Very good. Well done.

0:55:32 > 0:55:37A bit further...

0:55:55 > 0:56:05Needs to get past. This is good. Very good.Well played.

0:56:05 > 0:56:16A bit of draw there now. A bowl and a half shot, Jack High.

0:56:23 > 0:56:23Jack

0:56:25 > 0:56:33Run, come on, run.

0:56:35 > 0:56:39The worst end there really. She's been pretty consistent but that's

0:56:39 > 0:56:45three short bowls and if Lesley can find another good one, he'll be in a

0:56:45 > 0:56:47bit of trouble, Mr Burnett.

0:56:50 > 0:56:54Turns the green over, that'll be very good. Turns the green down...

0:56:54 > 0:56:58Yes, that's better. Little bit unlucky it moved to the jack because

0:56:58 > 0:57:02it's brought the jack into the open. Without the movement on the jack, it

0:57:02 > 0:57:07would have beening perfect. The trouble for Darren is, if he wants

0:57:07 > 0:57:12to run with this, there are holes and gaps all over the place and no

0:57:12 > 0:57:15gabbing position either.No, but he'll be pleased he's playing that

0:57:15 > 0:57:19back hand side and he does like the back hand in both directions on this

0:57:19 > 0:57:31rink.Yes. Very close to drawing it.

0:57:31 > 0:57:37Hurry, now, hurry...Needs an edge.

0:57:37 > 0:57:41An edge on the red would have got him all the way through to the jack

0:57:41 > 0:57:55at a good weight. And Jamie now has a chance to turn the jack himself.

0:57:55 > 0:58:00Not sure about this one.It's under.

0:58:05 > 0:58:15Still one down?Yes, this one here.

0:58:15 > 0:58:27Got the edge of the green to use. Same weight.

0:58:32 > 0:58:37Hurry, Darren. You are still down there a wee turn of the jack is

0:58:37 > 0:58:42good.Another chance for Jamie to put this jack out of sight.

0:58:42 > 0:58:47Everything to gain to reach.

0:58:48 > 0:58:56Come on. Down you come, now.

0:58:56 > 0:58:58Good try.

0:59:09 > 0:59:13He's got a difficulty as he's got no back position, John, and if he

0:59:13 > 0:59:18leaves it, he's in a heap of trouble. He's got to play the back

0:59:18 > 0:59:22hand just over the draw. If he brings the jack through, takes the

0:59:22 > 0:59:27danger away.Yes. Obviously, he'd like to get to the jack and extend

0:59:27 > 0:59:35it through into this sort of position.

0:59:35 > 0:59:47Can't see anything else, to be honest. That is the shot to play.

0:59:47 > 0:59:55If that jack goes to there, it picks up, three, four, five. Take it away

0:59:55 > 0:59:59from Jamie.

1:00:10 > 1:00:15It needs to run. It has to kick inside. Just inside. This has to go

1:00:15 > 1:00:19down as a chance.Yes, it is an opportunity. Not easy on that side

1:00:19 > 1:00:25but if he does get off his bowl, the 2.00 position, the short bowl, the

1:00:25 > 1:00:29green bowl takes him into the jack, he will score three, maybe four. It

1:00:29 > 1:00:39is an opportunity. It's a massive one if he gets it absolutely right.

1:00:40 > 1:00:45A foot over the dead weight and he could make this a four.

1:00:59 > 1:01:04Needs to hurry.A chance to get off the bowl. He might not need that

1:01:04 > 1:01:06bowl.

1:01:14 > 1:01:23APPLAUSE Played itW didn't need the edge.

1:01:23 > 1:01:28Gets the jack.

1:01:30 > 1:01:36! That was the problem. Darren Burnett just couldn't get one in

1:01:36 > 1:01:40there.

1:01:41 > 1:01:46Two ends to go.

1:01:52 > 1:01:56And the Burnett and Field combination will be to try to score

1:01:56 > 1:02:03four shots.The problem started there. They didn't have an early

1:02:03 > 1:02:08bowl past the jack. That was the issue. We said earlier on, in this

1:02:08 > 1:02:14three bowls format. You need one past. The feel-good factor if you

1:02:14 > 1:02:20are skipping.Italways gives you the option to play into things.

1:02:30 > 1:02:34Back now. Good start. Looks good.

1:02:52 > 1:02:57We'll keep that.Wasn't intentional that but always a good position at

1:02:57 > 1:03:08the back. Always useful.

1:03:36 > 1:03:41It might be hanging on for the shot. A better bowl for the recovery.Draw

1:03:41 > 1:03:46one in. Either hand. I'm happy with that.

1:03:49 > 1:03:53Backhand looks the better option.

1:03:57 > 1:04:06It's a cinder just to draw in off a bowl. Played it really well.

1:04:24 > 1:04:29The first bowl for Jamie, if I was him I would be tempted to draw. At

1:04:29 > 1:04:33the moment you wouldn't want to remove that.He has a problem, if he

1:04:33 > 1:04:39takes tout the angle will take him away from the jack. He is drawing on

1:04:39 > 1:04:45the backhandA sensible decision. The weight wasn't too bad.The

1:04:45 > 1:04:52weight was lovely. W still not ideal. -- well, still not ideal.

1:05:09 > 1:05:14Never far away on the backhand, Darren. That's his favourite hand.

1:05:14 > 1:05:18No doubt about that.Of the two sides he will always play that

1:05:18 > 1:05:22backhand?Well, you make your mind up now, Jamie. I think he'll run

1:05:22 > 1:05:28this now.Stilt danger of winging his own bowl out.

1:05:30 > 1:05:38Well-played. ! Pick the bones out of that one.

1:05:39 > 1:05:42Dear me.

1:05:44 > 1:05:49Great strike.He gets it absolutely. A perfect drive, isn't it? Three

1:05:49 > 1:05:55bowls away.That's as good as it gets.

1:06:00 > 1:06:02Darren, going for the jack.

1:06:04 > 1:06:07Hurry, hurry, hurry.

1:06:09 > 1:06:13That was the danger, taking his own bowl out. But just a fraction for

1:06:13 > 1:06:19Darren.He had to play it. No choice then.

1:06:42 > 1:06:49Well, he is going to go for the best back. Interesting choice.

1:06:59 > 1:07:03You must believe it, Darren is going to drive the jack. I'm not sure if

1:07:03 > 1:07:07he will, John? He needs shots, though.

1:07:10 > 1:07:20Oh, he is past T it is a good bowl. Well, he is thinking I'll take a

1:07:20 > 1:07:23three-shot lead into the last, really. That's what he is saying.

1:07:23 > 1:07:287-3. That's the problem Darren Burnett has. He is looking at angles

1:07:28 > 1:07:32here. It doesn't look good for me T looks a bit flat from those angles,

1:07:32 > 1:07:42if he wants to take the two bowls out. I can't see it, John, I can't.

1:07:42 > 1:07:47It is such a wrong angle. Well apart as well. The flat angle, that's the

1:07:47 > 1:07:52problem to get to there. He has to play that on the backhand to get

1:07:52 > 1:07:58across. I can't see that happening. Nor me. Realistically, I think it is

1:07:58 > 1:08:03a draw and you go into the last end 3-down. I think that's what

1:08:03 > 1:08:06realistically all he has.I think that's what he has to play, I really

1:08:06 > 1:08:18do. Back positions against them as well. A good draw shot. 7-3 down.

1:08:18 > 1:08:21Misses this, well, the set is virtually over.

1:08:25 > 1:08:29He is going heavy, for the two bowls.

1:08:32 > 1:08:43It looks like one is a green.One shot, Chestney and Doig.Well, he

1:08:43 > 1:08:46probably thought going into the last end 3-down was just not close

1:08:46 > 1:08:48enough.

1:08:52 > 1:08:57I can't blame him but we couldn't see the angle absolutely perfect but

1:08:57 > 1:09:02it didn't look right, did it, John?

1:09:12 > 1:09:14Jack leg, two.5m.

1:09:19 > 1:09:25Five shots now. And anything that drops shot from the pair in red and

1:09:25 > 1:09:28it is all over. Well, that is a super start, it

1:09:28 > 1:09:35really is.

1:10:09 > 1:10:12Well, that's pretty good.

1:10:20 > 1:10:25It's hard to get two or three when you really need them, never mind

1:10:25 > 1:10:27five.

1:10:28 > 1:10:39IsEase a touch. That's OK. OK.Not bad there.That's probably the

1:10:39 > 1:10:45target, that's very good.That's true. Jamie says that's the target.

1:10:45 > 1:10:48If she split the two reds, it will make it very difficult, nearly

1:10:48 > 1:10:56impossible I would say.Run all you can. Up, up.

1:10:59 > 1:11:02Very good, well done, well done.

1:11:27 > 1:11:31It's a good bowl but that green bowl looks like it is locked in now,

1:11:31 > 1:11:38John. I don't know what Darren can do with this. I suppose he has to

1:11:38 > 1:11:47hit it.The bowls at the moment not sitting very favourably for him.

1:12:12 > 1:12:19Darren knows if he comes into this and misses, it's more or less over

1:12:19 > 1:12:25anyway. But I can't see you them developing a count out of it.

1:12:25 > 1:12:28Everything is locked in, John, isn't it?I think at this stage he might

1:12:28 > 1:12:33as well have a bit of a bash at that and hope you get a fluke result. I

1:12:33 > 1:12:38don't see a shot there to get a 5. It is a practice end.A technical

1:12:38 > 1:12:46term?Yes, "a bash." You can't see anything that is on. I can't either.

1:12:46 > 1:12:51Hit it and hope for a favourable break. Give you something to play

1:12:51 > 1:12:56your last delivery. You can almost see it in his face. He is almost

1:12:56 > 1:13:00saying - out on earth can I get something out of this?

1:13:26 > 1:13:31Well, he has lost that bowl in the ditch, as well? There is no danger

1:13:31 > 1:13:40of our bowl going? I don't think so. I don't think there is any hope of

1:13:40 > 1:13:43that happening.

1:14:07 > 1:14:10You don't want to look at this.

1:14:20 > 1:14:24Abarcadabara and there is five. He would be a real wizard if he does

1:14:24 > 1:14:30this.What would he do if he hits the jack so hard it breaks up into

1:14:30 > 1:14:36smithereens?I would say you would have to replay the end.Exactly.

1:14:36 > 1:14:42That's the only way I can see him getting out of this.

1:14:48 > 1:15:00One red.One red.

1:15:06 > 1:15:11First set to done et and Field.

1:15:13 > 1:15:22Jamie played a couple of good conversion shots.

1:15:22 > 1:15:25conversion shots. -- first set to Chestney and Doig.

1:15:25 > 1:15:28Ye, Jamie played a couple of good conversion sets and that was the

1:15:28 > 1:15:39difference.Jack length 27.5ms.

1:16:11 > 1:16:19Come on, all the way up. Run, run. One yard.

1:16:22 > 1:16:34A few short bowls from Rebecca Field at the moment.

1:17:02 > 1:17:07Well, if you leave a few bowls like, that David, it tells in the end,

1:17:07 > 1:17:12doesn't it?Well it does. Everything was tight in the first end. A lot of

1:17:12 > 1:17:15singles going on. You can only build if the bowls are in the head. That's

1:17:15 > 1:17:25the way it works. And Lesley has had the edge in this match.

1:17:28 > 1:17:34Try to draw in closer. Could be three down. Either hand.

1:17:53 > 1:18:04The problem for Rebecca is making sure she gets past it. The two short

1:18:04 > 1:18:08bowls weren't great and she has overreached trying to play a perfect

1:18:08 > 1:18:13bowl.

1:18:13 > 1:18:16Yeah, he doesn't really want to leave something jack-high here

1:18:16 > 1:18:20either.At the moment Darren won't be driving at this. He will be

1:18:20 > 1:18:25trying to draw a good second.

1:18:45 > 1:18:54Big pressure for Darren, if you lose the first set, you want to get off

1:18:54 > 1:19:00on the second and score at the first end. Well that is in. Probably taken

1:19:00 > 1:19:04a couple off.Jamie might be tempted to go to the other side. Any

1:19:04 > 1:19:09turnover into that red is good.He is on the forehand. He is good as

1:19:09 > 1:19:12long as he makes centre rink. He doesn't want to leave a shoulder.

1:19:12 > 1:19:19Well-played here.Doesn't want to leave the shoulder. Well done. Super

1:19:19 > 1:19:22bowl.

1:19:25 > 1:19:30It has widened the target, maybe just by half a bowl. But Darren can

1:19:30 > 1:19:37remove the two of them, if he gets it perfect. He will have to drive

1:19:37 > 1:19:46it, surely, JohnHe has to hit the target.

1:19:46 > 1:19:49target. The problem is if Jamie draws again and gets movement on

1:19:49 > 1:19:58that. .He has it drive this. Takes a two out he will get second shot.

1:19:58 > 1:20:05He is interested. Hurry, hour yu. That was a little bit better.

1:20:23 > 1:20:33Well So down to one. Not the perfect result but reasonably predictable.

1:20:33 > 1:20:42Jamie looking the same line as the last bowl. Gets any movement on the

1:20:42 > 1:20:48jack and' draw the shot.Very close here.Very close. Yes it's another.

1:20:48 > 1:20:52He has made the double. It has rolled off the bowl a little bit but

1:20:52 > 1:20:56where it has gone to is a pretty decent position.

1:21:09 > 1:21:12I don't think he can do anything but draw here. There is nothing to play

1:21:12 > 1:21:17toNo, it seems to me probably just a draw on the forehand. I think it

1:21:17 > 1:21:23really has to be, John, because a draw there, he gets second shot and

1:21:23 > 1:21:28might even draw the shot. And if he really wants to play into it, is the

1:21:28 > 1:21:34back bowl. You know t could just be half a bowl, and they can lose three

1:21:34 > 1:21:40or four. He can not risk that. Not in the first end anyway. Get it down

1:21:40 > 1:21:46to a single.

1:21:53 > 1:21:59I think he can be well-pleased.

1:22:15 > 1:22:22Well, what a bowl down. A brilliant bowl. Always the way to play it. In

1:22:22 > 1:22:27for second and draw the shot. A bonus. It was class. Hard to play

1:22:27 > 1:22:36the wide line. Perfect weight. Drawback and fall in for shot.

1:22:39 > 1:22:44That's good stuff.

1:22:49 > 1:22:55What do you fancy?You pick your weight?

1:23:28 > 1:23:30Jack length 27m.

1:23:39 > 1:23:45Unlucky again, aren't I? Next time.

1:24:22 > 1:24:28Just loosened up a bit this end.

1:24:40 > 1:24:44As I was saying, it has just loosened up on this end, hasn't it?

1:24:44 > 1:24:50It is probably going to happen. You can't keep it going all the time.

1:24:50 > 1:24:56Just occasionally in matches there will be a little bit of a loose end.

1:25:02 > 1:25:14Well, it is a shot but still very beatable.

1:25:32 > 1:25:35Very good.

1:26:09 > 1:26:16Another very good ball by Darren.I think you are just about there just

1:26:16 > 1:26:23now.Not an easy one to work with, this.

1:26:31 > 1:26:38Very well-placed here. That's good. Well done.What a good bowl that is,

1:26:38 > 1:26:42John. He put one in there. I think he was probably looking for the red

1:26:42 > 1:26:48bowl but he'll take it.Yes, looking to get the red and dropped in behind

1:26:48 > 1:26:56the jack.Oh, a cracking bowl in there. He has to be tempted to run

1:26:56 > 1:27:00this and go for the split, hasn't he, just trying to disturb things,

1:27:00 > 1:27:04get it out in the open.

1:27:05 > 1:27:11I don't think there is any other way to get the shot.Perfect connection

1:27:11 > 1:27:21is dead split. Pushes your two with it.

1:27:37 > 1:27:44The deepest position is red.Worth putting another one there.There is

1:27:44 > 1:27:52a green bowl there but there is a deeper red one, close to the ditch.

1:27:52 > 1:27:56If he'll get deep, he probably covers at least one if not two of

1:27:56 > 1:28:02the spots as well.

1:28:14 > 1:28:18Well, it hasn't covered the exact back bowl but it has probably

1:28:18 > 1:28:24covered the respot. The way that hit is sitting, John, the respot is

1:28:24 > 1:28:30something that Darren Burnett and Rebecca Field do not want. No, it is

1:28:30 > 1:28:42a difficult one for Darren now, while he gambles again.

1:28:43 > 1:28:46while he gambles again. Checking out the angles at the moment, to see if

1:28:46 > 1:28:52it goes right. But what if he went wrong. If it goes right, you don't

1:28:52 > 1:28:57have to think about it. Is it realising the potential for

1:28:57 > 1:29:01disaster. And just the way it is sitting, I don't know if it'll cost

1:29:01 > 1:29:06him one more. If it is still just the one shot on the respot you might

1:29:06 > 1:29:17as well go for T always got a chance.

1:29:35 > 1:29:51I can't see them even playing this bowl.Well, there

1:29:51 > 1:29:56bowl.Well, there could Removing the red near the jack.Well, again, he

1:29:56 > 1:30:02would be a little bit unlucky to give the shot away but it's a close

1:30:02 > 1:30:06game, mate, every shot you have to fight hard forJamie is a very

1:30:06 > 1:30:10adventurous player. He likes to take these little half chances if he can

1:30:10 > 1:30:14get them. I can't see him making another shot, other than that. But

1:30:14 > 1:30:22there is a bit of dapger he could end up...

1:30:31 > 1:30:38Didn't fancy that one.

1:31:47 > 1:31:50APPLAUSE.

1:32:44 > 1:32:50Lesley is looking for an adjustment on the weight. Just running through

1:32:50 > 1:32:58again. Good effort.

1:33:03 > 1:33:14If you don't get a close bowl, you need to get to those.

1:33:30 > 1:33:43Green in a better position again. If Jamie drops a really close ball.

1:33:47 > 1:33:56A poor ball by Jamie Chestney's standards.

1:34:05 > 1:34:10Just a matter of sliding past. And he's managed it. Behind the jack

1:34:10 > 1:34:11would be perfect.

1:34:13 > 1:34:19Almost as good.

1:34:31 > 1:34:38Oh, dear.

1:34:57 > 1:35:00For anyone watching on the red button coverage, it will be ceasing

1:35:00 > 1:35:04very shortly but you can switch over to BBC 2. Fascinating set in the

1:35:04 > 1:35:12final of the world mixed pairs. So red button coverage will cease

1:35:12 > 1:35:22shortly and BBC Two will be picking it up.

1:35:22 > 1:35:32it up. Important bowl this.

1:35:33 > 1:35:41Needs the jack.Come on, Jamie. Brilliant ball.

1:35:53 > 1:36:00We can welcome our viewers in Wales now for this, most of the second set

1:36:00 > 1:36:11in this world mixed final.

1:36:28 > 1:36:32Once we see that third end completing, the dulcet tones of

1:36:32 > 1:36:38Wales will be with us, Port Talbot. It's a tight end. We expected it to

1:36:38 > 1:36:52be the first set. 8-4 to Les by Doig and Jamie Chestney.

1:36:52 > 1:36:56Nothing in the match between the pairs. Very similar in this early

1:36:56 > 1:36:58stage of the second set.

1:37:23 > 1:37:27Rebecca had the better start. Laid a few short bowls in recent ends.

1:37:27 > 1:37:38That's a decent start, just past the jack.

1:37:44 > 1:37:49Well done.Nice reply.

1:37:52 > 1:37:58Very like the start of the first set. A little bit of sparring on

1:37:58 > 1:38:08single shots.Very Nip and Tuck. A couple of big turnover balls from

1:38:08 > 1:38:13Jamie Chestney. That's been the difference. That's why they're a set

1:38:13 > 1:38:19in front. In the last couple of ends, Darren's had to pull a few

1:38:19 > 1:38:23good bowls out in this set as well. It's very tight. Still a long way to

1:38:23 > 1:38:29go in this match.

1:38:29 > 1:38:31go in this match.Good try.

1:38:43 > 1:38:48Three ends in the tie-break. Three bowls. They don't use two any more,

1:38:48 > 1:38:58it's three. It's been the case for a couple of decades.

1:39:09 > 1:39:19Back hand. It's a clear road in. Very close.She's played well. She

1:39:19 > 1:39:21really has.

1:39:23 > 1:39:31She's a new player to TV audiences in the UK. Singles player. Singles

1:39:31 > 1:39:36player for Scotland and runner-up in the world outdoor singles, December

1:39:36 > 1:39:442016, Christchurch and adapted very well to playing in this format. A

1:39:44 > 1:39:51new combination, of course, with Jamie Chestney.

1:39:56 > 1:40:01Darren Burnett looking for a punchy one here. Move it back to the two

1:40:01 > 1:40:11Reds.That's OK. Given them another option. It's provided an extra

1:40:11 > 1:40:16shoulder as well. You can actually move on to the forehand if he wants

1:40:16 > 1:40:25to play it. A couple of chances now for Darren.

1:40:43 > 1:40:46Didn't come out properly. There is another shot on the other side of

1:40:46 > 1:40:50the forehand. Darren is persevering on the back hand but got the

1:40:50 > 1:40:54possibility of a shot on the forehand side as well.He likes this

1:40:54 > 1:40:59back hand and has a chance of bowl on to bowl here.Green bowl. What is

1:40:59 > 1:41:03going to happen. It's right out and it's going to stay within the

1:41:03 > 1:41:07confines of the rink, by the looks of it and that's going to be very

1:41:07 > 1:41:14close. I think it's in.

1:41:20 > 1:41:23That is not an easy position. No, and they are going to take a look at

1:41:23 > 1:41:31this. Very close to the line.

1:41:31 > 1:41:34They're going to use the string because it's a middle off the yellow

1:41:34 > 1:41:38line. It's not just the yellow line but it's the middle of it and just

1:41:38 > 1:41:42black. They have marks on the green that they can run this through. If

1:41:42 > 1:41:55not, they can use a telescopic type but this should be very accurate.

1:41:55 > 1:42:10It's out. Darren Burnett will be absolutely delighted with that.

1:42:10 > 1:42:15Taking note of that. He's a policeman!A little bit more

1:42:15 > 1:42:18accessible to the players. It would have been very difficult from where

1:42:18 > 1:42:28he was.

1:42:32 > 1:42:37Wants to get in with a full one. Really good weight.

1:43:00 > 1:43:05Struggling. Doesn't want to draw.

1:43:05 > 1:43:12I fancy we've got it.She favours this and we can confirm that. I

1:43:12 > 1:43:15think that's a distance we can be fairly sure of. This really should

1:43:15 > 1:43:21be a double.

1:43:21 > 1:43:25be a double. It's a good chance for Jamie on a safer, wider line.Wanted

1:43:25 > 1:43:30to stay away from the red one. Gently, gently though. It's running

1:43:30 > 1:43:42a shade.Just stopped in time. APPLAUSE.

1:43:59 > 1:44:03Mixed pairs always very entertaining and always gets very good support as

1:44:03 > 1:44:11well. They need to win the majority of the three ends to force the

1:44:11 > 1:44:16tie-break.

1:44:16 > 1:44:19tie-break.The crowd always enjoy this event. It's a nice mix. A bit

1:44:19 > 1:44:30of banter between the men and the ladies on the rink.

1:44:43 > 1:44:47Oh you're running now. What a line you're on. Come on. Up a bit

1:44:47 > 1:44:53further.

1:45:10 > 1:45:15Very good.I would switch it over. Bit of an adjustment there. Covered

1:45:15 > 1:45:21the spot position, the respot position.Got that early in the end.

1:45:21 > 1:45:26Just value, John, that's the point. It's not where it was meant to be

1:45:26 > 1:45:33but there's value in where it's finished.That is good.That is

1:45:33 > 1:45:38enough.

1:45:51 > 1:45:59Got a chance with this one.

1:46:16 > 1:46:25Good effort. Well delivered by Rebecca there.Darren will be happy

1:46:25 > 1:46:39with that. So will Rebecca as well. Mark Dawes waiting for his match.

1:46:39 > 1:46:50Some of the other players there in the under-25s, later in the week.

1:47:00 > 1:47:03Funny how the players' lounge becomes a lot more interesting than

1:47:03 > 1:47:08the second set of a match, you don't find anyone around for an hour and

1:47:08 > 1:47:22then suddenly they're about the players enjoying their coffee.

1:47:23 > 1:47:25players enjoying their coffee.Well played, Darren.Funny little head

1:47:25 > 1:47:38this. It's going to be a draw, draw, draw.

1:47:38 > 1:47:46Gets to the last bowl and falls in, he'll get the shot.Needs to run.

1:47:46 > 1:47:57Needs to hurry. I think these ends are dangerous, I really do.

1:47:57 > 1:48:02I think the last bowl is a problem for him now. He may have to change

1:48:02 > 1:48:11and try something a little more aggressive.

1:48:11 > 1:48:17aggressive.It's not a mile off the third one.

1:48:32 > 1:48:34Taken the forehand away on the draw. Niff look at playing a weighted

1:48:34 > 1:48:40ball.Looking at it to see whether it's two or three. -- might have to

1:48:40 > 1:48:44look at playing a weighted ball. Very difficult to tell with the

1:48:44 > 1:48:47third one.

1:48:47 > 1:48:53Going to get a result, David, isn't he?Yes.Even the bowl into the jack

1:48:53 > 1:48:59will give him something.Very close to three shots. If it is three

1:48:59 > 1:49:06shots, I don't think he can be any worse off.

1:49:24 > 1:49:33Oh, that's good. Played that well. Good drive.

1:49:33 > 1:49:42Something was bound to happen.Good strike. Cleared the decks. God a

1:49:42 > 1:49:46chance, maybe if he's made this shot, but you can see all the bowls

1:49:46 > 1:49:50disappearing and it's taken a lot of the danger away. It's one red and

1:49:50 > 1:49:53it's not particularly a given to make a double out of it. It's

1:49:53 > 1:50:04possible. Especially if it's on Darren's back hand.

1:50:16 > 1:50:21Oh, well played. APPLAUSE.

1:50:29 > 1:50:37That was big, John. Massive turnover shot.He loves the back hand and he

1:50:37 > 1:50:42nailed it again, turned the jack for three. It's not a given that you are

1:50:42 > 1:50:45going to make another one there, but to make it a three is a real bonus

1:50:45 > 1:50:53and he played for it because he was reaching.

1:51:26 > 1:51:32Two feet short again. Played some great ends but in's been one or two

1:51:32 > 1:51:35where she's let bowls Done down the green. They've been punished. Won't

1:51:35 > 1:51:41need to do that at the moment.

1:51:41 > 1:51:48Lesley taken advantage there.

1:52:20 > 1:52:23She's got past it.

1:52:23 > 1:52:30APPLAUSE.

1:52:30 > 1:52:34Problems building again for the Burnett Field combination.Five or

1:52:34 > 1:52:35six inches behind.

1:52:42 > 1:52:46I think sometimes you can get a bit jack-focussed which is a dangerous

1:52:46 > 1:52:49thing to do.

1:53:11 > 1:53:15Lesley's played two bowls on this side. Looks good again. Jamie is

1:53:15 > 1:53:19clapping it in.Very good.Going to go deep but it's always useful

1:53:19 > 1:53:29there, especially when you have Darren against you.

1:53:29 > 1:53:31Darren against you. They realised it's a valuably bowl. It's a

1:53:31 > 1:53:35knowledgeable crowd.Yes. A good head for Lesley. Two close balls and

1:53:35 > 1:53:41one just past the jack. Given Jamie a good opportunity to build on it.

1:53:41 > 1:53:48Darren's in a bit of trouble again.

1:53:54 > 1:54:07I don't think he's too fussed with that one.

1:54:19 > 1:54:24Very good.Just what the doctor ordered.

1:54:31 > 1:54:40Couldn't have played that any better.Your choice. Either draw in,

1:54:40 > 1:54:44try and save, or my plant goes to Jamie so if you were to catch

1:54:44 > 1:54:48Jamie's or mine. That plant was formed earlier in the end, I thought

1:54:48 > 1:54:54it might be a useful one. Rebecca's bowls. Clean green would be good but

1:54:54 > 1:55:01if you are a bit tight, the plant should give you something.

1:55:01 > 1:55:12Unlucky. Got the wrong bowl. Rebecca realised that. She sort of went, ah.

1:55:12 > 1:55:17The jack comes this way.Try to draw it around the foresnandYes.Good

1:55:17 > 1:55:29thinking, Jamie, I would play it like that.

1:55:40 > 1:55:50Nice weight. He'll drop back for another.

1:55:53 > 1:56:06This is a pivotal moment. Choices, John. What do you do? Do you draw

1:56:06 > 1:56:11in, in the full knowledge that you could probably get, well, probably

1:56:11 > 1:56:15fourth shot would be guaranteed, but this is really where the choices

1:56:15 > 1:56:20come in, isn't it?If he's driving it, he's going to drive it off the

1:56:20 > 1:56:24back hand. If you are wide of the gap, it's a one-ball target really

1:56:24 > 1:56:28isn't it, could get something away on the white side. Drawing away into

1:56:28 > 1:56:33there, ulinged have to say that is very possible -- you would have to

1:56:33 > 1:56:37say that is very possible. If Darren wants to be really brave, he could

1:56:37 > 1:56:41run it through on to that. The jack will bounce. Anything is better than

1:56:41 > 1:56:45where it is at the moment. The trouble is, there's a great big gap

1:56:45 > 1:56:53between the two green bowls.I would be tempted to try to draw this, he's

1:56:53 > 1:56:575-3 up, three down wouldn't be a disaster, but a five or six would

1:56:57 > 1:57:03be. That would be a huge result for the Chestney and Doig combination. I

1:57:03 > 1:57:06would be looking at a draw with the green bowl.It would be a draw for

1:57:06 > 1:57:12me too.

1:57:20 > 1:57:24He's close with this. Oh, he's just filtered through.

1:57:24 > 1:57:29APPLAUSE. Took two off though. Jamie has a

1:57:29 > 1:57:39bowl left.

1:57:43 > 1:57:54Don't do anything hasty.

1:58:05 > 1:58:13If he drops back on the jack, he could make it into four. When you

1:58:13 > 1:58:20lose them, you want to get them back again.

1:58:24 > 1:58:34again. Didn't push through it. Goodness. By some distance too.

1:58:39 > 1:58:44Interesting end.

1:59:39 > 1:59:42There's always the benefit of course if you win this title, you are

1:59:42 > 1:59:43brought back to defend it.Very good.

1:59:43 > 1:59:51APPLAUSE. Guarantees involvement. Always nice

1:59:51 > 1:59:59to know, John.

2:00:03 > 2:00:09The days of not being able to defend titles in bowls has long gone. It

2:00:09 > 2:00:13has happened.

2:00:16 > 2:00:22I think it's fair to say, the control over players has diminished

2:00:22 > 2:00:29quite dramatically over the last 30 years.

2:01:06 > 2:01:10SdsJust needs to rest the bowl. Well, not bad. Not bad. Another one

2:01:10 > 2:01:14in the head. Happy with that.

2:01:24 > 2:01:35One red at the moment.

2:01:48 > 2:01:56Very close.He could've had a bit of movement on the jack there. A little

2:01:56 > 2:02:00unfortunate.

2:02:04 > 2:02:09Well, I heard Darren say "too quick."

2:02:14 > 2:02:20At least he knew it was too quick. A similar ball from Jamie. He was

2:02:20 > 2:02:23fairly close last time.

2:02:28 > 2:02:32Looking for some movement.Well he is off the outside one. He will not

2:02:32 > 2:02:36be too far away.He gets a shot off that. # second.

2:02:38 > 2:02:43Always looked like he could roll off that with a shot.

2:02:46 > 2:02:50Surely he must follow him, Darren, play that shot and come in off that

2:02:50 > 2:02:57bowl itself. He has to be on the high side. He can't afford to be

2:02:57 > 2:03:01jack-solid unless he is Karadzicying enough weight to punch it through.

2:03:01 > 2:03:05It looks like a forehand shot. He favours the backhand but there is

2:03:05 > 2:03:11a catch there. More inviting.

2:03:18 > 2:03:26He has been aggressive. He got the outside green one.

2:03:26 > 2:03:30Well, another chance for Jamie to touch that jack.

2:03:33 > 2:03:37Yeah, I think he will be just drawing until he can score another

2:03:37 > 2:03:43one. If he can get to the jack it'll be a bonus but he can put another

2:03:43 > 2:03:54bowl in there, sit off his last bowl.

2:04:03 > 2:04:08Stay up there.Wrong side. Just needed another foot or so that was

2:04:08 > 2:04:14all. Well, again, he has one bowl in the head there.

2:04:22 > 2:04:27He has options. He can play that running bowl or just draw it.That's

2:04:27 > 2:04:30the thing, you have this bowl here, the target bowl. You want to take

2:04:30 > 2:04:34that out. The danger is running on the front one and taking his own

2:04:34 > 2:04:39bowl out. But that's the one he is after.

2:05:00 > 2:05:04He is controlling it. A lot less weight. He has to be careful with

2:05:04 > 2:05:13this front plant. Oh, John, I'm not sure about that. No, he is a bit

2:05:13 > 2:05:20unfortunate.Although the red ball was going right through the gap, I

2:05:20 > 2:05:26don't know if you could see it there. I think he played with a lot

2:05:26 > 2:05:32less weight deliberately to try to negate that.Faint heart never won a

2:05:32 > 2:05:36fair lady. Not when it comes to winning matches. Sometimes you have

2:05:36 > 2:05:41to take a risk. He pulled back a little bit on it. Just a single.

2:05:41 > 2:05:49Still two ends to go. So, the set is very much there for the taking.

2:06:20 > 2:06:27A good start from Rebecca. Needs a couple of bowls around that now.

2:06:38 > 2:06:47She knows she is over it. This is not a time to go walk about.

2:07:13 > 2:07:21Doesn't look happy. Overcorrection. Oh dear. You said there comes a time

2:07:21 > 2:07:27when...Thank you, ladies and gentlemen.The crowd are

2:07:27 > 2:07:37Muralitharaning there. At the

2:07:37 > 2:07:38Muralitharaning there. At the moment there -- the crowd armurmuring

2:07:38 > 2:07:40there.

2:07:43 > 2:07:46Well she needs it nail this in order to put some pressure on Jamie

2:07:46 > 2:07:49Chestney.

2:07:59 > 2:08:03That's the best of the lot so far.

2:08:16 > 2:08:22Well, you would expect Jamie can get in on the inside of that.Yes but he

2:08:22 > 2:08:27has an opponent who can do the same anyone so he really needs to -- the

2:08:27 > 2:08:31same thing, so he really needs to get in with the first one.Very good

2:08:31 > 2:08:38here. Well-played.

2:08:40 > 2:08:46It is well-played.Always good when you have a skip that can do that.

2:08:46 > 2:08:51It's very useful. I remember the days when you used to be able to do

2:08:51 > 2:08:59that, John. Well, my old mate didn't often leave me in too much trouble.

2:08:59 > 2:09:05You have to say that, he will be listening.Yes, I have got to say

2:09:05 > 2:09:13that.Yes, well, he knows he is too quick, that means he is at least two

2:09:13 > 2:09:21feet through. Even further in this one.Yeah.The bowls are finding

2:09:21 > 2:09:26centre rink so the line is there.

2:09:39 > 2:09:44He needs to hurry to get to this.

2:09:47 > 2:09:53It was a good position, John.

2:10:08 > 2:10:12Well, he is going for the half bowl to try to wing it out.In the area.

2:10:12 > 2:10:14Very close.

2:10:16 > 2:10:21You could see that from about four yards out, John, he had the gap.He

2:10:21 > 2:10:27would have known that. He could see the gap from there. He boof' known

2:10:27 > 2:10:31he'd missed T the trouble for Jamie Chestney, he know that is bowl will

2:10:31 > 2:10:36wing out. So he has to get another one in. He must draw it to the back

2:10:36 > 2:10:45red one. . It's a draw, Jamie, exactly.Draw to the bottom red boe.

2:10:45 > 2:10:47Pop one in there.

2:10:54 > 2:11:00If he misses this, I would bet on Darren getting it the next time.

2:11:00 > 2:11:06That's where the pressure comes on.

2:11:14 > 2:11:18Up you come, beat your own.

2:11:21 > 2:11:27I tell you what...

2:11:31 > 2:11:34Well, he is going to come down to here to try to wing this bowl off.

2:11:34 > 2:11:38If he gets it right, the bowl will disappear and then you have the

2:11:38 > 2:11:43shots that he will score, of course, well certainly this one. Not sure

2:11:43 > 2:11:48about whether this one will be counting but it might do. It's going

2:11:48 > 2:11:51to be close.

2:12:04 > 2:12:11Got it this time.Yes, well-played. That's the thing with Darren, I

2:12:11 > 2:12:14don't expect him to miss with two bowls.

2:12:14 > 2:12:21APPLAUSE One shot that I can feel.Just the

2:12:21 > 2:12:28one. He wasn't sure if it would count but at this stage in the game

2:12:28 > 2:12:33it was massiveYes he was close with the previous delivery but he is

2:12:33 > 2:12:36perfect there. Darren Burnett at his very best.

2:12:36 > 2:12:40This is what he is so good at, conversion shots. He had to get that

2:12:40 > 2:12:43edge of the bowl and he got it clean.

2:12:59 > 2:13:04One shot to green it would've been #-5 and the red team would have had

2:13:04 > 2:13:08to score three shots. Now it is, they only have to score one, John.

2:13:08 > 2:13:13That was, in many respects probably the bowl of the match. It has

2:13:13 > 2:13:16certainly given him a better opportunity. They would have been

2:13:16 > 2:13:21struggling chasing three. Now it's anybody's set.Come on, right up.

2:13:21 > 2:13:26Right up now. Very good.

2:13:27 > 2:13:34A good start.

2:13:45 > 2:13:55A very good effort.Becs will want it get another one in there and

2:13:55 > 2:13:59build the head. The last end was a good example of what happens when

2:13:59 > 2:14:03you don't have enough bowls around. You knted rely on one bowl against

2:14:03 > 2:14:07these guys. No, not at this stage now. You need some position.

2:14:07 > 2:14:11APPLAUSE Well, that's a very good one in

2:14:11 > 2:14:14there.

2:14:32 > 2:14:35Just wants it to go across out of the way.A good bowl but he didn't

2:14:35 > 2:14:39want it right in front of the jack.

2:14:43 > 2:14:48This is a one-end shootedout. They might have to change tactics.I

2:14:48 > 2:14:53think he has decided he doesn't want another close bowl. Anything past

2:14:53 > 2:14:56where the green is, is good.

2:15:05 > 2:15:12A little deeper than where he wanted it, but it will be very useful.Drop

2:15:12 > 2:15:15off the wide bowl you will be very close.

2:15:24 > 2:15:29Very good try.

2:15:30 > 2:15:32Well, better round there.

2:15:34 > 2:15:39Jamie certainly will not be short. No, it is difficult here for Darren

2:15:39 > 2:15:43because if he does try to go for a closer ball, he would widen the

2:15:43 > 2:15:48target. There is a nice gap there at the moment. He doesn't want to fill

2:15:48 > 2:15:57that in.

2:15:57 > 2:16:02that in. The angle is there actually to take the two reds out. So, I

2:16:02 > 2:16:07wouldn't be at all surprised if Darren comes into this.

2:16:10 > 2:16:17I think Jamie will go for this, two bowls.

2:16:19 > 2:16:23bowls.Let's try and open it up, chance to follow in it. Follow in

2:16:23 > 2:16:28the jack.

2:16:32 > 2:16:38Needs to be inside the red bowl. Oh, he has got his own. Well, not bad

2:16:38 > 2:16:43Slightly better. He has good position at the back now, Jamie.

2:16:43 > 2:16:47That bowl is a target, the shot bowl.

2:16:50 > 2:16:56Well, what do you do now Darren, go for another close bowl?I think he

2:16:56 > 2:17:00needs another one, I really do.I do as W I think if he leaves that bowl,

2:17:00 > 2:17:07Jamie will be down at that, taking it away.He has to draw close.

2:17:07 > 2:17:14Respot the left-hand side. A distance away but still, it would

2:17:14 > 2:17:19hold the shot. He needs another one in.

2:17:32 > 2:17:36It covers the respot but doesn't give him the shot. You could say

2:17:36 > 2:17:43Jamie could draw this. I don't think there's any point, John. Because he

2:17:43 > 2:17:47has got the last bowl of the end. He has to be prepared to use T if he is

2:17:47 > 2:17:53not prepared to use his bowl, then he must draw it. -- if he is not

2:17:53 > 2:18:02prepared. If he takes the bowl out, Darren will certainly draw the shot.

2:18:03 > 2:18:09Choice chos. -- choices.

2:18:11 > 2:18:17It looks like he is drawing it.He is going for the match-win.

2:18:22 > 2:18:27It doesn't look right to me. It looks short. It is. He was looking

2:18:27 > 2:18:33for even a very close second there and he hasn't made it. If Darren

2:18:33 > 2:18:38puts one on a foot jack-high out of the way, John on the forehand.I was

2:18:38 > 2:18:43going to say, he doesn't want to go alongside the other bowl. Playing

2:18:43 > 2:18:51the forehand if he drops jack-high on the other side to score.

2:18:51 > 2:18:56Well, leaving the gap and forcing Jamie into saying, you you have to

2:18:56 > 2:19:00get the gap now, let's draw it.

2:19:09 > 2:19:16That looks under, is it? It has to run from there. He has to go for the

2:19:16 > 2:19:20bowl, now.It is a drive now. I tell you what, the plant isn't there as

2:19:20 > 2:19:25well. But he has to drive this, surely.I'm not sure if I would've

2:19:25 > 2:19:29swapped sides if I had been Darren. He played the forehand in that

2:19:29 > 2:19:34direction.He has options here but as is often the case, John, that's

2:19:34 > 2:19:38an option if he is on the forehand. The ideal option is to get the bowl

2:19:38 > 2:19:41out clean.

2:19:44 > 2:19:48Yes, too many things can happen. He thoos play this straight and get the

2:19:48 > 2:19:54bowl out. He doesn't want any movement on the jack.No the jack do

2:19:54 > 2:19:58him any good both sides unless it goes into the ditch but the respot

2:19:58 > 2:20:06is covered by red. Oh, looks wide to me.

2:20:07 > 2:20:14Has he got the plant? He has. The plant was on.

2:20:15 > 2:20:28That was always possible. The plant was an option.

2:20:29 > 2:20:32was an option.Well, a fantastic game and it is Lesley do I and Jamie

2:20:32 > 2:20:36Chestney who gets over the line. It was marvellous entertainment. Over

2:20:36 > 2:20:40two hours of great pleasure for everybody watching that match. On

2:20:40 > 2:20:43this occasion, Rebecca Field and Darren Burnett just couldn't force

2:20:43 > 2:20:49it through. They lay the second set but the last bowl of Jamie Chestney

2:20:49 > 2:20:55took it away and win it is by one shot.

2:21:02 > 2:21:06Well, we had fantastic bowls there, no doubt about that. Drive the with

2:21:06 > 2:21:10Jamie bringing the jack all the way through for a single to make 3-1 for

2:21:10 > 2:21:15the first set on the fourth end. And Darren Burnett just dropping in to

2:21:15 > 2:21:19make a double. That put them into 4-3 down but right in contention and

2:21:19 > 2:21:24then it was a marvellous bowl for Jamie. He made three with that on

2:21:24 > 2:21:29the 7th end to go 7-3 in front. This time it was Darren Burnett's

2:21:29 > 2:21:35opportunity and he touched the jack for a teleand then the last bowl of

2:21:35 > 2:21:40Jamie on to the plant. Jack goes through, takes the single, takes the

2:21:40 > 2:21:45match and takes the title.

2:21:51 > 2:21:56Well, you can see the combination of Chestney and Doig. They played 11-7.

2:21:56 > 2:22:02Scored heavily. That was the case but total shots scored 15-10 coming

2:22:02 > 2:22:06from the first set. 8-4. Touchers, it doesn't really matter. We didn't

2:22:06 > 2:22:09have any short jack lengths but great conversion shots. It really

2:22:09 > 2:22:13was a marvellous game.

2:22:18 > 2:22:22RISHI: Well the four players here. Darren and Rebecca. Obviously a

2:22:22 > 2:22:26tough match but moments in there I'm sure you would have felt you were

2:22:26 > 2:22:26tough match but moments in there I'm sure you would have felt you were in

2:22:26 > 2:22:32a good position?I thought we played a really good final. It good game.

2:22:32 > 2:22:37It could have went either way. Jamie threw attacking bowls at the same

2:22:37 > 2:22:40time. He was probably due a few from this morning. He took them out this

2:22:40 > 2:22:43afternoon. I thought all four players played well. No complaints.

2:22:43 > 2:22:48What were your thoughts on the match?Yes I'm getting fed up of you

2:22:48 > 2:22:51interviewing me first this year. Number four. Hopefully we can change

2:22:51 > 2:22:56that later on in the week. I felt the pace dropped off a bit during

2:22:56 > 2:23:00the match and struggled a bit with length but credit where it is due,

2:23:00 > 2:23:04these two played well.I will remember that when we get to the

2:23:04 > 2:23:09ladies' singles. Congratulations. We were talking about the match who was

2:23:09 > 2:23:12familiar with the blue rink and this was less familiar to you, but you

2:23:12 > 2:23:16are a champion now.Yeah, it's definitely been a little bit

2:23:16 > 2:23:21different. You know playing with Jamie, that has been a bit

2:23:21 > 2:23:24unfamiliar so it has been learning this and learning how reach other

2:23:24 > 2:23:30play but I thoroughly enjoyed it. You looked comfortable? Did you feel

2:23:30 > 2:23:35comfortable?No, I'm always shaking like anything. I was glad that last

2:23:35 > 2:23:39bowl was in Jamie's hands, not mine. We will go through that last bowl if

2:23:39 > 2:23:43you don't mind, Jamie, the sort obviously at the top level you enjoy

2:23:43 > 2:23:47having that challenge, what were you thinking as you released it?I felt

2:23:47 > 2:23:52I was in the in the area. And Darren was unfortunate with his last and

2:23:52 > 2:23:55probably gave me a bit of a bigger target with that plant being

2:23:55 > 2:24:00available as well. It was a fairly wide head to run into then, and

2:24:00 > 2:24:04managed to get the perfect connection. You are sort of

2:24:04 > 2:24:09underplaying it a bit and the one that mattered most?Yeah, yeah. I

2:24:09 > 2:24:13shut my eyes and hoped for the best it worked out all right. Two

2:24:13 > 2:24:17trophies in the space of 24 hours. Yesterday you said when we were

2:24:17 > 2:24:21interviewing you after the won the pair was Mark you couldn't find the

2:24:21 > 2:24:27words, you were feeling a little bit overwhelmed. What about now?I think

2:24:27 > 2:24:31yesterday was quite a tense game and at the end of the match, I probably

2:24:31 > 2:24:35was a bit lost for words but after that one was out of the way, just

2:24:35 > 2:24:38really enjoyed this afternoon to be honest. Like Darren said I thought

2:24:38 > 2:24:42it was a good game of bowls, gave us both leads played well and gave me

2:24:42 > 2:24:46and Darren the opportunities to play the shots we liked to play. I

2:24:46 > 2:24:52thought it was a good game. Could've gone either way.Well-played.

2:24:52 > 2:24:57Commiserations to Darren and Rebecca but Lesley and Jamie are your mixed

2:24:57 > 2:25:03pairs champions. APPLAUSE

2:25:07 > 2:25:12What a terrific final but it is now time for the presentation. And here

2:25:12 > 2:25:19to make the presentation, your appreciation, please for the Group

2:25:19 > 2:25:29Finance Director for Just Simon Thomas and the Chief Executive

2:25:29 > 2:25:36director of World Bowls Tour, Mr Richard Maddison. First to our

2:25:36 > 2:25:40runners up, receiving their runners up cheque, your appreciation for

2:25:40 > 2:25:49Darren Burnett and Rebecca Field. APPLAUSE

2:25:54 > 2:26:01Now, to the winners, he's rather making a habit of this, receiving a

2:26:01 > 2:26:09Langham, goblet each, a cheque and the title of the 2018 World Indoor

2:26:09 > 2:26:13Mixed Matchplay Champions, it's Jamie Chestney and Lesley Doig. #

2:26:13 > 2:26:18APPLAUSE

2:26:31 > 2:26:40Ladies and gentlemen, one more time, the 2018 World Indoor Mixed Pairs

2:26:40 > 2:26:42Matchplay Champions, Jamie Chestney and Lesley Doig.

2:26:42 > 2:26:52APPLAUSE Rishi. What a time for Jamie and

2:26:52 > 2:26:58Chestney winning the pairs yesterday and alongside Mark Dawes and today

2:26:58 > 2:27:02teaming up with Lesley Doig. They are the mixed pairs champion. Two

2:27:02 > 2:27:05trophies in 24 hours for Jamie. He was doing well as a singles player

2:27:05 > 2:27:11but he lost out to Darren Burnett earlier today. A quick reminder,

2:27:11 > 2:27:16when he come off air on BBC Two, you will see action from the Australian

2:27:16 > 2:27:23Open tennis, including the match between Kyle Edmunds and Gregor

2:27:23 > 2:27:30Dimitr o, v. And a reminder we have NFL this week at 11.15pm on BBC Two

2:27:30 > 2:27:36with Mark Chapman. Now we will focus on the singles'

2:27:36 > 2:27:39action and quickly show you how things stand at the moment in the

2:27:39 > 2:27:42last 16:

2:27:46 > 2:27:50We know Darren Burnett is through to the quarterfinals.

2:28:07 > 2:28:11Qulr Now we are concentrating on the match between David Gourlay, who of

2:28:11 > 2:28:16course won this singles title at Preston back in 1996. Up against

2:28:16 > 2:28:20Mark Dawes who was part of the winning pairs team just 24 hours

2:28:20 > 2:28:24ago.

2:28:34 > 2:28:40# The first wind of springtime # A warm wind picks up the fallen

2:28:40 > 2:28:43blossom...# I can't believe it's 20 years but

2:28:43 > 2:28:47definitely this is the best tune amount in the wormed and best venue

2:28:47 > 2:28:50in the world for world indoors bowls and we all love coming here. I have

2:28:50 > 2:28:53been successful in the pairs and mixed pairs and to be honest over

2:28:53 > 2:28:58the last four years in the singles, you know I have got to a couple of

2:28:58 > 2:29:05semifinals. I'm happy with the rink and the place, it's just not got to

2:29:05 > 2:29:14the finals since all those years ago.

2:29:19 > 2:29:24Obviously Preston was another mazing venue at the Guildhall, you know, it

2:29:24 > 2:29:27was incredible that Huw and I were born only five miles from one

2:29:27 > 2:29:33another. We were great friends and for the two of us to play a world

2:29:33 > 2:29:39Tyne was a dream come true.

2:29:40 > 2:29:45Tyne was a dream come true. I was an outsider, about 120-1 it was an

2:29:45 > 2:29:48amazing week and memories I will never forget. The atmosphere was

2:29:48 > 2:29:56incredible. Being so close to Scotland, there was a lot of

2:29:56 > 2:29:59Scottish people made the trip down and because there were two Scottish

2:29:59 > 2:30:03players in the final, friends and family and work colleagues came

2:30:03 > 2:30:10down, it was a fantastic atmosphere, a great experience.

2:30:10 > 2:30:16Perth was an amazing week. It is always nice to win in your home

2:30:16 > 2:30:20country and I think, for me, you know, it is a great springboard on

2:30:20 > 2:30:22to the World Championships that gives you a little bit of

2:30:22 > 2:30:27confidence. It takes a little bit of pressure off you with the rapging

2:30:27 > 2:30:30points. But this is the World Championships. You start afresh,

2:30:30 > 2:30:39everything you have done before is forgotten. This is a new event.

2:30:43 > 2:30:51The general consensus is that Mark's played the best so far.The World

2:30:51 > 2:30:54Championships is without doubt the best tournament in the world but

2:30:54 > 2:30:59it's difficult, you know, and it goes more harder every year as you

2:30:59 > 2:31:03get older. I'm still there, still hanging in and who knows, maybe this

2:31:03 > 2:31:06could be the year.

2:31:18 > 2:31:23This is the 20th year that this event is being held at Potters and

2:31:23 > 2:31:28in the first singles held here in 1999 David Gourlay lost out to Alex

2:31:28 > 2:31:32Marshall and since then he's been a fixture at the seaside resort. Mark

2:31:32 > 2:31:36Dawes, his partner, will be full of confidence after lifting the trophy

2:31:36 > 2:31:42in the pairs yesterday.

2:31:42 > 2:31:46To win the pairs is just unbelievable. Myself and Jamie came

2:31:46 > 2:31:50together a couple of years ago, I've played decent in it and to go out

2:31:50 > 2:31:54there and win the final is just fantastic. I'm over the moon,

2:31:54 > 2:31:59really, really pleased. It's what you play the game for, spend the

2:31:59 > 2:32:04hours practising, travel up and down the country. You can practise as

2:32:04 > 2:32:07much as you want but ultimately there's nothing like getting in the

2:32:07 > 2:32:11game experience on the rink really. It's been good, we have played one,

2:32:11 > 2:32:15two, three, four games, so a lot of the time has been spent on the rink,

2:32:15 > 2:32:19red and green, so yes, it's been really good but obviously you are

2:32:19 > 2:32:27playing to win, you want to win the title and you want the added bonus

2:32:27 > 2:32:34of getting the preparation. I was looking at David's footage. I was

2:32:34 > 2:32:39really young at that time. A top, top player, always in the top eight

2:32:39 > 2:32:44kind of thing. I'm under no illusions, I've got to play great

2:32:44 > 2:32:49and hope that I catch David on an off day. The way I'm playing, I know

2:32:49 > 2:32:55if I get my first few bowls in there, I'll be competing with nearly

2:32:55 > 2:32:58enough everybody, then I'll make the shots on the back of the first two

2:32:58 > 2:33:03bowls being good, I then tend to hit the runners and stuff. I'm pretty

2:33:03 > 2:33:06confident. You have got to be confident going into the game.

2:33:06 > 2:33:10Fingers crossed it goes well. Fingers crossed indeed for Mark

2:33:10 > 2:33:16Dawes. David cork hill is alongside me. You are a person, as a player,

2:33:16 > 2:33:19who would have encountered David Gourlay on and off the rink. The

2:33:19 > 2:33:24first time you played him on the rink was how long ago?At least two

2:33:24 > 2:33:27decades ago, possibly even more than that. David was winning national

2:33:27 > 2:33:33titles in the early 1990s.Really. You were saying you played his dad?

2:33:33 > 2:33:38I did, yes, David Gourlay Snr was a skip for Scotland and he actually

2:33:38 > 2:33:43won a gold in the Commonwealth Games.Speaking of Commonwealth

2:33:43 > 2:33:46Games, David Gourlay was chatting to him earlier in players lounge

2:33:46 > 2:33:50talking about one of his greatest achievements which was when he

2:33:50 > 2:33:54coached the Scottish team to the success in Glasgow?Yes. I think

2:33:54 > 2:33:59there are different dimensions to different people. Some are very

2:33:59 > 2:34:03dedicated to just playing the game. David is multidimensional and brings

2:34:03 > 2:34:08a little bit more to his overall persona within the game but more

2:34:08 > 2:34:11importantly he brings credibility and whenever you've got a coach with

2:34:11 > 2:34:16credibility, that's key.How difficult is it to mix coaching with

2:34:16 > 2:34:19playing for someone like David who takes everything so seriously and is

2:34:19 > 2:34:25so dedicated? It's not too bad because the vast majority of David's

2:34:25 > 2:34:30coaching, not so much coaching as mentoring, as in the outdoor game is

2:34:30 > 2:34:33the high performance stuff. It's different, you talk ability high

2:34:33 > 2:34:37quality players, limited numbers and it's a different rule.22 years

2:34:37 > 2:34:40since he's won the title, up against Mark Dawes today. How to you see

2:34:40 > 2:34:44that one going? It will be really difficult. Mark Dawes was the star

2:34:44 > 2:34:47of the pairs, he was the difference in many respects to winning the

2:34:47 > 2:34:51match.Yes.If Mark plays as well as he did in the pairs, I think David

2:34:51 > 2:34:56will have a tough time, but David Gourlay is coming in on the back of

2:34:56 > 2:35:01winning the Scottish, so he's super confident and a super confident

2:35:01 > 2:35:05David Gourlay is always going to be tough to beat. And clearly in good

2:35:05 > 2:35:09form. Corky, thank you very much. We'll head over to the MC again and

2:35:09 > 2:35:15let you get back into the commentary box.Thank you very much Rishi. This

2:35:15 > 2:35:19young man is certainly doing what it takes to remain in the coveted

2:35:19 > 2:35:23world's top 16. Ladies and gentlemen, yesterday's crowned world

2:35:23 > 2:35:34indoor pairs champion, give it up for Mark Dawes!

2:35:35 > 2:35:41MUSIC: Alive and kicking...

2:35:43 > 2:35:48APPLAUSE. And now to a man who has appeared in

2:35:48 > 2:35:52more world ranking finals than any other player in the history of the

2:35:52 > 2:35:57game, ladies and gentlemen the former World Indoor Singles and

2:35:57 > 2:36:02reigning Scottish international Open Champion, it's David Gourlay!

2:36:02 > 2:36:14. MUSIC: Footloose...

2:36:15 > 2:36:16MUSIC: Footloose... -

2:36:17 > 2:36:22Corky has made the mad dash to the commentary box where he'll be

2:36:22 > 2:36:25joining John Price. Thank you,

2:36:25 > 2:36:28joining John Price. Thank you, Rishi. I do worry about

2:36:28 > 2:36:32that little scramble up the stairs just in case I have an accident but

2:36:32 > 2:36:47I made it!I worry about you too. I'll get you a chair lift!

2:37:01 > 2:37:07Can Mark Dawes keep it going?I think so. He'll play a great game.

2:37:07 > 2:37:11But David Gourlay, a man of many shots, he's been in the game for

2:37:11 > 2:37:15such a long time. Expecting a really good tussle here. A difficult one to

2:37:15 > 2:37:17call.

2:37:23 > 2:37:28Mark Dawes provisionally number 12. The world ranking David Gourlay,

2:37:28 > 2:37:33provisionally number two. As we have seen quite often in the sport of

2:37:33 > 2:37:38bowls, it's more a matter of who is playing well on the day, as opposed

2:37:38 > 2:37:43to the rankings.I think that is fair to say. Ranking positions are

2:37:43 > 2:37:47obviously a guide to how well you are doing, but I think on any given

2:37:47 > 2:37:52day, number 12 could beat number one.

2:37:52 > 2:37:54APPLAUSE.

2:38:10 > 2:38:14A chats with David Gourlay earlier. He said he thinks the way Mark Dawes

2:38:14 > 2:38:17played yesterday, he knows this is going to be a very, very tough

2:38:17 > 2:38:22match.

2:38:24 > 2:38:28match. Second round game but he's showing he's in top form.Yes, that

2:38:28 > 2:38:31is true. APPLAUSE.

2:38:31 > 2:38:36Not playing bad himself though, Mr Gourlay.

2:38:39 > 2:38:43Won in Scotland in November and doesn't play an awful lot of bowls

2:38:43 > 2:38:48because he resides in Spain but he still knows where to two on the

2:38:48 > 2:38:52rink. You talk about game management. He's been there, done

2:38:52 > 2:39:01it.Yes. What he brings to the game is all that wealth of experience.

2:39:01 > 2:39:04He's playing bowls in Scotland at the moment because he's been picked

2:39:04 > 2:39:10for the Scottish international team and he feels that...The last bowl

2:39:10 > 2:39:18is...For a long time. Because of the selection, it brought back a lot

2:39:18 > 2:39:22of experienced players and everybody looks like they've been around for

2:39:22 > 2:39:26quite a while. They're very comfortable on the big stage of the

2:39:26 > 2:39:32internationals and it's going to be a tough one. That is in Paisley, of

2:39:32 > 2:39:38course.

2:39:40 > 2:39:45What you will find with Mark Dawes, he's a good drawing player, so he'll

2:39:45 > 2:39:51ask a few questions of David.He's also a good running bowl player,

2:39:51 > 2:39:57coming from a crown green background. Very quick action. Very

2:39:57 > 2:40:05accurate on the running bowls.

2:40:09 > 2:40:15Given this one a shout. Very good. Very good indeed. That's just

2:40:15 > 2:40:26typical of Mark Dawes, thee bowls within ten inches. First end.

2:40:32 > 2:40:38Gourlay is going to need the weight on his first end.He is looking down

2:40:38 > 2:40:46at the forehand strike I think. He would be very unlucky if he punches

2:40:46 > 2:40:51into this to be any worse than two down. The ideal result is of course

2:40:51 > 2:40:56if he does decide to play it is to get it on to the green and move the

2:40:56 > 2:41:06jack. The other green one is a possibility as well. That depend how

2:41:06 > 2:41:16he hits that one. The primary target was the front bowl, the shot bowl.

2:41:19 > 2:41:23He's decided there is a bit of danger and he's going to draw the

2:41:23 > 2:41:30shot. Nice, wide line.

2:41:30 > 2:41:34shot. Nice, wide line. First end, less of the percentages, he always

2:41:34 > 2:41:46said he's worried about his own bowl disappearing.

2:43:39 > 2:43:44Just under an inch.

2:44:05 > 2:44:14Both these players are using very strong bowls.

2:44:16 > 2:44:19David Gourlay's got that little routine he goes through every time

2:44:19 > 2:44:27he delivers the ball, a little pull up and he is very compact.

2:44:27 > 2:44:39Left hand on the knee.

2:44:42 > 2:44:49You would remember David Gourlay Snr I'm sure when he was skipping for

2:44:49 > 2:44:54Scotland, you might have played with him?Yes. Very good player.

2:45:02 > 2:45:07David's mother Sarah also a prolific winner of titles and medals and

2:45:07 > 2:45:15various national and world events. A real bowls family.

2:45:24 > 2:45:28Not an easy chance but an opportunity still to score a double.

2:45:42 > 2:45:52APPLAUSE.

2:46:06 > 2:46:16APPLAUSE.

2:46:41 > 2:46:51Hasn't quite got the first bowl going yet.No.

2:46:51 > 2:46:55going yet.No. That is an interesting choice. Certainly not in

2:46:55 > 2:47:02the way because it's a big wide hand, but it does force him outside.

2:47:02 > 2:47:10So that's certainly not the natural line in.

2:47:11 > 2:47:18Not sure if he'll risk it a second time.

2:47:26 > 2:47:32Good adjustment from David Gourlay. It's quite obvious with David living

2:47:32 > 2:47:39in Scotland

2:47:39 > 2:47:42in Scotland and still going home to Barcelona, Christmas time and

2:47:42 > 2:47:46various other things, but he's playing a lot more bowls in terms of

2:47:46 > 2:47:55a weekly basis and it's showing, John, there's no doubt about that.

2:48:06 > 2:48:10It's about match play isn't it. It's difficult to just turn it on

2:48:10 > 2:48:13whenever you want.It is match play but he has the craft, that's the

2:48:13 > 2:48:23thing.Yes. Or the vast majority of David's reputation is based on

2:48:23 > 2:48:33singles play.

2:48:35 > 2:48:47That is going to be a big addition.

2:48:49 > 2:48:56Nearly made it. He was nearly in.

2:49:00 > 2:49:04Having a very close look at that.

2:49:09 > 2:49:17David is looking to just reach that green bowl behind the jack.

2:49:21 > 2:49:25Nationaled have been much better if you had that opportunity with the

2:49:25 > 2:49:28last bowl, he played all of his bowls but what a great plant that

2:49:28 > 2:49:33would have been. There's a shot on more Mark Dawes here isn't there. He

2:49:33 > 2:49:43wants it.Absolutely.Three-ball plant to remove that red.

2:49:43 > 2:49:55Down to seven seconds. Such a quick player. And he's in the area. Just

2:49:55 > 2:50:00on the wide side.Very close.I wonder if that would have been

2:50:00 > 2:50:04worthwhile just to steady himself for a second. He's that sort of

2:50:04 > 2:50:11player, a very fast player.

2:50:11 > 2:50:23player, a very fast player. I've a feeling he thinks its might be red.

2:50:46 > 2:50:53My goodness, this is close. There we go. In

2:50:54 > 2:51:00go. In the end he didn't need it.

2:51:24 > 2:51:34A metre and a half.

2:52:38 > 2:52:43David tucks the right leg in behind the knee just to make room for the

2:52:43 > 2:52:52delivery arm to go through. Played this one well.

2:52:52 > 2:53:03Oh, the green fell back.

2:53:29 > 2:53:32It dropped short by some distance and he chased after it but sometimes

2:53:32 > 2:53:36I think you are better staying on the map and staying down there to

2:53:36 > 2:53:45see if the head changes.

2:53:57 > 2:54:03It is rare, to be fair, when people lose bowls. It does happen and has

2:54:03 > 2:54:08happened but it's a rare occurrence that they lose bowls. David trotting

2:54:08 > 2:54:17down. He's not going to make it all the way back centre rink. Still a

2:54:17 > 2:54:28chance for David Gourlay.

2:54:32 > 2:54:39The hitch up of the trousers that he always does before he plays. Almost

2:54:39 > 2:54:43like a concentration mechanism, isn't it, you know, you get a

2:54:43 > 2:54:54routine. He's very close with this.

2:55:09 > 2:55:14Such a tidy player, David Gourlay. He's got that compactness about his

2:55:14 > 2:55:23game. Doesn't play a risky or flamboyant game. Everything's very

2:55:23 > 2:55:28measured.

2:56:05 > 2:56:13APPLAUSE. Norwich City fans, you reckon?A few

2:56:13 > 2:56:20Canaries in there.

2:56:24 > 2:56:28Been down there a few times to watch Norwich when we have been playing

2:56:28 > 2:56:33here. Lovely ground, great atmosphere.Lovely place. I've been

2:56:33 > 2:56:49over there. It is nice. Beautiful city.20 inches short of jack high.

2:56:56 > 2:57:02That's good stuff, it really is.

2:57:24 > 2:57:29In many respects, that is a lot better. It's a lot better for Mark

2:57:29 > 2:57:43Dawes to have that single shot there.Takes the target away.

2:57:44 > 2:57:48He wants to be able to hide in the red ones. That is why he's playing

2:57:48 > 2:57:52the forehand to try to hide it in the closest red ball. Gets it in

2:57:52 > 2:58:04there, it's good, he doesn't want to open it up, of course.Excellent.

2:58:04 > 2:58:13David's target is so small now. Back to the drawing game.

2:58:30 > 2:58:42Good effort. He'll probably want to play the forehand but if he's heavy,

2:58:42 > 2:58:52I don't think he can get back any way. He's got the feel for the

2:58:52 > 2:58:54forehand. It's all about good weight, sticking with the forehand.

2:58:54 > 2:58:59Yes.

2:58:59 > 2:59:03Yes.He has to make sure he doesn't make any connections. The red ball

2:59:03 > 2:59:09protects it.

2:59:18 > 2:59:24APPLAUSE. . A tidy start for Mark, 5-2 up.

2:59:24 > 2:59:28Probably playing the better bowls at the moment. More consistent than

2:59:28 > 2:59:33David, gets a lot of close bowls in there. He's asking a few questions

2:59:33 > 2:59:45of David.Good value for the lead at the moment.

2:59:45 > 2:59:5927 metres. The crowd disappear for a while and then filter their way back

2:59:59 > 3:00:05in.

3:00:05 > 3:00:10APPLAUSE.

3:00:15 > 3:00:2116 nchts short of jack high. -- 16 inches.

3:01:25 > 3:01:30Well adjustment made. Stale available on the backhand.

3:01:30 > 3:01:33Well adjustment made. Stale available on the backhand. The gap

3:01:33 > 3:01:38is about 9 inches. About 12-inches short of jack high.

3:01:54 > 3:02:00Pushed it out a little bit.Just trying to miss his own bowl.He

3:02:00 > 3:02:07needs another one in there. That red is looking a bit lonely.

3:02:27 > 3:02:32That's perfect. The green bowl was there to be pushed in. It negates

3:02:32 > 3:02:38that completely.A great bowl. Just enough weight to get past the front.

3:02:38 > 3:02:45As you said, settled in nicely on the green bowl.

3:03:07 > 3:03:12With, he might get second. It's close.Two red.Still two red.He

3:03:12 > 3:03:19has to be careful now. He doesn't want to drop that green over.Well,

3:03:19 > 3:03:23he is really thinking about a third shot. It might be better on the

3:03:23 > 3:03:35backhand. He is going on the jack hand but safer.

3:03:38 > 3:03:42I don't think he was trying too hard.No he is a little tentative

3:03:42 > 3:03:47with that. Understandable. He could easily have given that away with too

3:03:47 > 3:03:50much weight.

3:03:54 > 3:03:58The score is 4-5 after six ends.

3:04:18 > 3:04:25Greg Harlow will, a spectator. Still in the singles, with his wife Kay.

3:04:46 > 3:04:50Well that's probably the best David has played so far in this set. A

3:04:50 > 3:04:54good opener.

3:05:34 > 3:05:43Well, David Gorley really in his stride now. He is playing very well.

3:05:43 > 3:05:48Yet he is still one behind, Mark Dawes. This is the reason why.

3:05:49 > 3:05:51Cl It's a correction.

3:05:54 > 3:05:57. The front toucher there.

3:06:02 > 3:06:06Well, I'm surprised he is playing the backhand. I suppose he could get

3:06:06 > 3:06:09the edge of the jack but a little forehand tap would do the same

3:06:09 > 3:06:15thing. You can polythe same shot on the backhand, I suppose.

3:06:30 > 3:06:34I have a feeling Mark will change here and try to get to the last red

3:06:34 > 3:06:40bowl. I don't think he will play the forehand. There is a lot of danger,

3:06:40 > 3:06:43so a backhand draw, reaching David's last bowl and falling in. That's the

3:06:43 > 3:06:48spot to be.

3:07:09 > 3:07:25Just overplayed it. A little chance here, that he can turn

3:07:27 > 3:07:33on to the green and get the jack. Any touch is good on the green bowl.

3:07:33 > 3:07:37He is just outside it again with the weight. It is so hard it play, isn't

3:07:37 > 3:07:41it, John? That's why I had a feeling he might just stick to the forehand,

3:07:41 > 3:07:47you get the little dip at the end in the forehand.I agree, two good

3:07:47 > 3:07:50opening deliveries on that, I thought that may have been the pay

3:07:50 > 3:07:54in. He is off on the backhand. He can see the jack on the backhand,

3:07:54 > 3:08:06that's the reason why it was the second option.

3:08:10 > 3:08:15A quick match this.

3:08:28 > 3:08:31Sometimes this can be the frustration of bowls.Yes,

3:08:31 > 3:08:34absolutely.

3:08:48 > 3:08:52At all levels you have to be mentally strong. Individual lane

3:08:52 > 3:08:57collectively as a team. Keep your rink members positive, even if the

3:08:57 > 3:09:02opposition is getting in with one or two bowls every end, John, and hope

3:09:02 > 3:09:06eventually it'll change and they'll miss something and you will pick up

3:09:06 > 3:09:12a big count. It's all part of the mental strength of playing in the

3:09:12 > 3:09:15rink.

3:09:21 > 3:09:28Very consistent with the opening deliveries. You can he played at an

3:09:28 > 3:09:30international level with lead and his first two bowls are very good.

3:09:30 > 3:09:38Playing lead helps. No doubt about that.

3:10:07 > 3:10:12A bit unlucky there. If it had fallen on the jack, it moves, three,

3:10:12 > 3:10:16four five, inches.Two inches past.

3:11:02 > 3:11:05He is having a time-out. Having a long look at this Mark Dawes. You

3:11:05 > 3:11:10doesn't want to present the target on the backhand. I think he needs to

3:11:10 > 3:11:14get another look and close it off Very important this end. He could

3:11:14 > 3:11:23score this end.David really needs to score. He can't think about Mark

3:11:23 > 3:11:27carrying the three-shot lead into the last endMark was concerned. He

3:11:27 > 3:11:31was a bit concerned about dropping off his green bowl and leaving him a

3:11:31 > 3:11:34bigger target. He is trying to really in.Not far away. Touching

3:11:34 > 3:11:38the jack will make a three.That's very good.He will be very happy

3:11:38 > 3:11:41with the two.

3:11:45 > 3:11:51This is what he was looking for. Another bowl in there.

3:11:55 > 3:12:04Well, David has to play a bit of weight at this, try and open it up.

3:12:06 > 3:12:13! It spun out to the head a little bit but probably still second.

3:12:22 > 3:12:26I think Mark will play a similar bowl. No real reason to change,

3:12:26 > 3:12:36David. Same bowl, touches the jack. A bonus. A set lie.

3:12:49 > 3:12:51Well, he is not even attempting it.

3:12:53 > 3:12:57Just going deep.Two green.

3:12:59 > 3:13:08Lying two.He has covered the respot. I can't imagine David

3:13:08 > 3:13:14drawing this.I think he'll cover it backhand just for the draw.He is

3:13:14 > 3:13:17going stronger for that. But again looking for the target. Dipping

3:13:17 > 3:13:23quickly. Oh, I think he has come out of that smelling of roses.

3:13:27 > 3:13:31The green bowl actually turned over because the jack hit it.Two shots

3:13:31 > 3:13:40David Gourlay.Oh, a massive turnover.

3:13:47 > 3:13:51Wow, a four shot turnover. Fortunate. Got the target but

3:13:51 > 3:13:57fortunate result. The only thing I felt about Mark, he covered the

3:13:57 > 3:14:03back. I might have been tempted again to put another close bowl in.

3:14:03 > 3:14:10You know David Gourlay will play that kind of weighted bowl.Well, he

3:14:10 > 3:14:14was sorted of forced into it. I actually thought he had missed it

3:14:14 > 3:14:17because he was coming away so quickly. He thought he was just

3:14:17 > 3:14:22underneath. He got a bit of the jack. One shot was good. Two was an

3:14:22 > 3:14:28absolute bonus.

3:14:50 > 3:14:55He follow up with a good opener, the next end. It's the situation of

3:14:55 > 3:15:00being in control of the set and one bowl changes things completely. You

3:15:00 > 3:15:06know.Yes, a big turnover.

3:15:32 > 3:15:35Well, a good effort again. Slips past.

3:15:37 > 3:15:42There has been very little between the two players. It would be very

3:15:42 > 3:15:53unusual if this ends up a tied end. But at the same time, you sort of

3:15:53 > 3:15:57feel that Mark Dawes is just on the cusp of winning the set effectively

3:15:57 > 3:16:01the last end and a bit of fortune has gone against him and now he is

3:16:01 > 3:16:06in a real battle to get something out of it.This is a really good

3:16:06 > 3:16:11bowl here.He has to be careful he doesn't fall back, though.That was

3:16:11 > 3:16:17very good.That will force David into running that. I just had a

3:16:17 > 3:16:22feeling he was going to come back there and drop on the jack up to the

3:16:22 > 3:16:28red bowl. David will hit this. It is a malter of picking his weight.

3:16:30 > 3:16:36Not a big target. He is very good on the forehand strike and has been for

3:16:36 > 3:16:39over 20 years.

3:16:42 > 3:16:47Yes, there he goes again.Doesn't miss many of those.

3:16:48 > 3:16:50No.

3:16:54 > 3:17:00Right down the middle. You think of the most reliable car in the world,

3:17:00 > 3:17:03you think about David Gourlay's forehand. It never goes wrong. Well

3:17:03 > 3:17:08it does, to be fair on occasions but he went through a period, John,

3:17:08 > 3:17:13where the percentages of him hitting on the forehand was so high. I did

3:17:13 > 3:17:16some work on it and I felt - I can't believe this.

3:17:20 > 3:17:23. Mark Dawes meantime trying to draw close and keep the pressure on. Oh,

3:17:23 > 3:17:34look at that.Well-played.

3:17:39 > 3:17:43What does he do, John? Does he try to ease off and stay there or go for

3:17:43 > 3:17:49a push on to the green bowl to spring the jack?He will be aware,

3:17:49 > 3:17:55of course, that Mark Dawes has a bowl to come. Whatever he does, it

3:17:55 > 3:17:58is no good out in the open by four feet, because you know Mark is going

3:17:58 > 3:18:03to draw that.I nice little touch on the backhand if he wants it play

3:18:03 > 3:18:08that. I think a better option on the forehand to arrive at it, turn the

3:18:08 > 3:18:13bowl off and try to spring it.Any movement on that jack, he has a bowl

3:18:13 > 3:18:19in position just behind. This is not easy, coming across the rink. He has

3:18:19 > 3:18:22no choice, though, he has to pick a line to this.

3:18:23 > 3:18:27Just playing over the weight. Hard to pick this line when you are going

3:18:27 > 3:18:34across. Doesn't look terribly happy about it. Missed it on the inside.

3:18:34 > 3:18:39It is really difficult to play that shot. One shot, first set to Mark

3:18:39 > 3:18:44Dawes.Well done to Mark Dawes, he played a wonderful end of bowls. He

3:18:44 > 3:18:48played it so well.

3:19:17 > 3:19:21It was a great first set.

3:19:23 > 3:19:31David Gourlay now will regroup and come again in the second.

3:20:09 > 3:20:12A good reply from Mark Dawes. Every shot is going to be hard to come by

3:20:12 > 3:20:16here.Yes, it's been one of those matches where you are going to be in

3:20:16 > 3:20:32a situation of every bowl really

3:20:33 > 3:20:37needs a value attached to it, wherever it finishes.

3:20:45 > 3:20:48Well, he has a chance with this.

3:20:49 > 3:20:52One red.Very close.

3:20:54 > 3:20:58Well I know some of the crown green guys will be watching this and

3:20:58 > 3:21:06saying - well, it is different, no doubt about it, and I was sitting in

3:21:06 > 3:21:10an auditorium and someone asked me about the crown green verses the

3:21:10 > 3:21:16flat and which one did I think requires more skill. I said - I tell

3:21:16 > 3:21:21you what, if you put flat people on to a big crown green and see how

3:21:21 > 3:21:28good they go and then do the same here, at the Portable Rink, belief

3:21:28 > 3:21:32me, the skills they cannot be compared. Both games are very, very

3:21:32 > 3:21:37difficult at the highest level.

3:21:41 > 3:21:46Then there was a photograph of guys playing crown green on social media.

3:21:46 > 3:21:53Andy Cairns, thank you for putting it on, playing out in the snow. They

3:21:53 > 3:21:58are hardy souls, they really R but they are a bunch of good lads. --

3:21:58 > 3:22:04they really are. It's a tough code. It really is, the

3:22:04 > 3:22:10crown green. Can David sneak one in?

3:22:27 > 3:22:30Well s this worth a little bit of a push on the green bowl?I think it

3:22:30 > 3:22:35is. He will have a little look at it but definitely worth it. The front

3:22:35 > 3:22:42bowl on to the red. I can't see him being any worse than one down, even

3:22:42 > 3:22:45if it goes wrong.

3:23:06 > 3:23:10Well he was trying to draw there but didn't really have the weight for

3:23:10 > 3:23:15it.

3:23:18 > 3:23:30Well, one shot. A steady start.

3:24:32 > 3:24:44He o A decent start. -- a decent start.

3:24:57 > 3:25:00He has just overplayed again.

3:25:13 > 3:25:17The first bowl Mark has turned his back on. He wasn't happy with it

3:25:17 > 3:25:23when he let it go.He is shaking the head there. It is most unlike limb.

3:25:23 > 3:25:26In particular with David being behind the jack with the first two

3:25:26 > 3:25:28bowls.

3:25:30 > 3:25:32-- it is most unlike him.

3:25:34 > 3:25:37He has got another chance.

3:26:04 > 3:26:10He didn't touch his own bowl there, which has kept it upright. One green

3:26:10 > 3:26:15and a measure. The gap is four-and-a-half inches.

3:26:36 > 3:26:40Well, this is a really scrappy end by David. He could drop a treble

3:26:40 > 3:26:46here.Well, you are always going to have the potential of a scrappy end,

3:26:46 > 3:26:52in each set. When you do have one, you are hoping you are only lose a

3:26:52 > 3:26:58single.The problem s when you are a set down, David, you can't afford

3:26:58 > 3:27:04too many of them, as the second set gets away from you very quickly. No,

3:27:04 > 3:27:09it is almost like you carry an extra shot into the second set.He is on a

3:27:09 > 3:27:16good track, getting back just inside the red.Oh, well, back on the jack

3:27:16 > 3:27:23here and he could make three. Oh, it didn't fall back. David is just

3:27:23 > 3:27:29waiting for a few seconds. That's the rules. Forward motion and then

3:27:29 > 3:27:3230 seconds afterwards to allow the ball to drop. But that was never

3:27:32 > 3:27:36going to drop. Very close for the third.

3:28:14 > 3:28:15Two shots, Mark Dawes.

3:28:19 > 3:28:24Well, it was only just, it was a close measure.Considering the end

3:28:24 > 3:28:28he played, getting away with losing a double is probably not bad, John.

3:28:28 > 3:28:33He was probably thinking to himself that it could have been worse.

3:28:36 > 3:28:39Jack length 28.5m.

3:29:19 > 3:29:25Better from David. A much better start.

3:30:11 > 3:30:16A good follow-up with the second one as well. David trying to pick it up

3:30:16 > 3:30:21a bit now and put Mark under a bit of pressure. Well, as I say, it was

3:30:21 > 3:30:31a scrappy end by David on the last end but I didn't expect he him to

3:30:31 > 3:30:37put two together.What a reply this is. What a reply.Drop away for

3:30:37 > 3:30:45second.One red. The gap, last bowl is just over two inches. Yours is

3:30:45 > 3:30:48about an inch.

3:30:53 > 3:31:00Seems that the last end was the last without a toucher. It's a toucher

3:31:00 > 3:31:03this end. We have gurus for that sort of information.

3:31:35 > 3:31:46If Mark can find a couple more inches to drop on to the red...

3:31:50 > 3:31:54Certainly trying again if he runs. Very much in the area. Very close.

3:31:54 > 3:32:02What an effort.Just off it.

3:32:06 > 3:32:18That looked so close, I thought he'd made it. No. What a try that was.

3:32:27 > 3:32:32This game is really so tight isn't it?Some of the bowling is amazing.

3:32:32 > 3:32:37That is why if you get a dodgy end, or a loose end, you sort of think,

3:32:37 > 3:32:39what's happening.

3:34:03 > 3:34:09Here we go again. You wonder, the bowl is a fraction away, then

3:34:09 > 3:34:13suddenly it loosens up.This is one that Mark will look to take

3:34:13 > 3:34:19advantage of. He needs to find a metre of weight. It was this

3:34:19 > 3:34:26direction last time. It was a bit loose. Two feet. It's a lot on these

3:34:26 > 3:34:30guys. Two inches is the normal.

3:34:47 > 3:34:56APPLAUSE.

3:35:18 > 3:35:22Second shot a little bit closer. After the last bowl you'd expect

3:35:22 > 3:35:26Gourlay to have another one. The game's slowed down, have you noticed

3:35:26 > 3:35:35that, John? Definitely slowed down. Yes. There was a vital period. One

3:35:35 > 3:35:46mistake. I think David doesn't want to widen this.

3:35:46 > 3:35:56to widen this. Take that. That is pretty good.

3:35:56 > 3:36:00pretty good.I think the shot's on the other side for Mark now. Any

3:36:00 > 3:36:11movement on the jack is good.

3:36:20 > 3:36:28Needs to get past the front one.

3:36:28 > 3:36:37Loose end by Mark and he's lost a double. Seen it happening to David a

3:36:37 > 3:36:47couple of ends ago.

3:36:47 > 3:36:58couple of ends ago.This jack's close.

3:37:00 > 3:37:11You have a three metre margin. Use nearly all of it.

3:37:12 > 3:37:14nearly all of it. That is the difference, if you play in

3:37:14 > 3:37:20nationals, club bowls, it would be two metres.Yes, absolutely. This

3:37:20 > 3:37:25was changed some years ago.It was to accommodate the respots and to

3:37:25 > 3:37:37give that little bit more of an impact.

3:37:43 > 3:37:54Slightly favoured last bowl. Very close.

3:38:52 > 3:38:56Oh, he needed a full jack. He couldn't afford the edge. That's

3:38:56 > 3:39:02what's happened.

3:39:03 > 3:39:07Two good bowls by two good players. Mark knows what is coming next from

3:39:07 > 3:39:12David Gourlay.Yes, so he needs another one in, or even just partial

3:39:12 > 3:39:18would be good.

3:39:18 > 3:39:25This wouldn't be too bad if he gets to this.

3:39:28 > 3:39:30to this.David will be looking at the split on the two greens. Doesn't

3:39:30 > 3:39:39want the jack to move now, doesn't want it to go deep anyway.

3:39:43 > 3:39:49want it to go deep anyway. David will be playing this running bowl.

3:39:49 > 3:39:56He's interested. Looks under. Got one. That's fine.

3:39:57 > 3:40:00one. That's fine. We'll be leaving BBC Two very shortly and moving to

3:40:00 > 3:40:09the red button. We'll be running in tandem for a minute or two, but

3:40:09 > 3:40:12please switch over fairly shortly. We'll let you know when so you can

3:40:12 > 3:40:17enjoy the end of the second set and a possible situation of going into a

3:40:17 > 3:40:26tie-break.

3:40:40 > 3:40:47It's a missed opportunity. Still very much alive in this set. Still

3:40:47 > 3:40:54anybody's.

3:42:09 > 3:42:15Once again, he's all over the jack with the first bowl. The second one

3:42:15 > 3:42:19is not bad actually where it is. Especially with David Gourlay's

3:42:19 > 3:42:28ability to drive on his forehand. David is going to slip under the

3:42:28 > 3:42:32back hand side again. Needs to lose a bit of weight for the first

3:42:32 > 3:42:42delivery.

3:42:42 > 3:42:46delivery. Looks better with this. It's got a chance. Just on the high

3:42:46 > 3:42:53side. Good second.

3:42:53 > 3:42:56side. Good second. That is what you want to be getting, a good second at

3:42:56 > 3:43:12the very least with your... After a loose first bowl. Close again.
