:00:12. > :00:16.champion. It is Jason Kenny who has the world champion. Great Britain
:00:17. > :00:17.are the team that could not be beaten, they are the world champions
:00:18. > :00:43.again. Last weekend, we were celebrating
:00:44. > :00:47.Britain's most successful Winter Olympics ever. It was all snowboards
:00:48. > :00:52.and sweeping storms in the curling and skeleton. The focus today is on
:00:53. > :00:53.two wheels, bulging thighs and Britain's most successful sport,
:00:54. > :01:14.arguably. She is going to do it! She is the
:01:15. > :01:26.champion of the world. It is Jason Kenny! The world champion. Becky
:01:27. > :01:34.James with a great chance to be a world champion, she's done it
:01:35. > :01:37.exclusion Mark -- she's done it! Great Britain are the team that
:01:38. > :01:45.could not be beaten. They are world champions again. And a very good
:01:46. > :01:49.afternoon to you. Welcome to our coverage of the track cycling World
:01:50. > :01:56.Championships. Britain's cyclist epic onto the global stage. Here is
:01:57. > :02:00.what is coming up. When it comes to world domination, you would be
:02:01. > :02:04.hard-pressed to surpass the record of Britain's women's team. They are
:02:05. > :02:08.looking for world title number seven. Unbeatable at recent
:02:09. > :02:15.Olympics, the world title is more elusive. Britain has not won a men's
:02:16. > :02:26.team sprint since 2005. Becky James joins forces in the women's team
:02:27. > :02:29.sprint. Congratulations if you have been falling late through the night
:02:30. > :02:40.on the red button with all the best reaction here on BBC One, and Sarah,
:02:41. > :02:47.11 Paralympic gold. But let's talk about babies first, how was she
:02:48. > :02:52.doing? She is eight months old, fantastic, a real giggle. She is
:02:53. > :03:00.loving her swimming, she enjoys being around the bikes as well. And
:03:01. > :03:03.how was your training going? Really well, hopefully get to the World
:03:04. > :03:07.Track Championships next month, the team should be announced in the next
:03:08. > :03:14.week or so. Then working towards the races as well. And how much of a
:03:15. > :03:18.transition has it been? It has been an interesting time, a real learning
:03:19. > :03:22.curve for me, I won my first race back in September last year. I've
:03:23. > :03:30.been doing really well on the road, I'm looking forward to racing again.
:03:31. > :03:33.Jamie, you retired back in 2009. Then you make the very sensible
:03:34. > :03:38.decision to move to California, didn't you? There is only so much
:03:39. > :03:45.Manchester whether I could take. Fortunately I find myself over in
:03:46. > :03:52.California. I read the BMX programme over in the States, a very amazing
:03:53. > :03:57.opportunity for myself. Back to the sport I got started and, very
:03:58. > :04:07.fortunate, I love my job. One of the big stars in the BMX, she has moved
:04:08. > :04:12.down, how was she doing? She is doing well, I saw her last week. BMX
:04:13. > :04:15.in the states is huge. They race near enough every single weekend, so
:04:16. > :04:20.over here there isn't as much competition, and I know Team GB's
:04:21. > :04:24.emphasis is on peak performance, and she got so far removed from her
:04:25. > :04:29.element, so going to the States and racing against girls but she needs
:04:30. > :04:34.to week and week out is best move. I'm sure we will see her flourish
:04:35. > :04:42.hopefully. I hope so as well. This track cycling World Championships in
:04:43. > :04:45.Colombia, Santiago, and the beautifully named velodrome
:04:46. > :04:53.Velodromo Alcides Nieto Patino. We are in Salford, but our commentators
:04:54. > :05:00.are. They can tell us more about the velodrome. The velodrome here in
:05:01. > :05:08.city Mac -- in Cali is different. It has a roof, but more significantly,
:05:09. > :05:14.it has no side so it is open to the elements. What impact will this have
:05:15. > :05:21.on racing? Velodrome like this is not often experienced. The last time
:05:22. > :05:25.I remember was Athens, we had a semi open track. There is a lot of wind
:05:26. > :05:32.blowing through here. That will change tactics. For the timed
:05:33. > :05:37.events, that will make a difference. It will change the equipment, riders
:05:38. > :05:43.will use five spoke wheels, stop them getting buffeted around. I
:05:44. > :05:47.think it is quite good that we mix it up and have something little bit
:05:48. > :05:52.different. And the rain could have a huge impact? We have seen clouds on
:05:53. > :05:58.the hills, rain before the competition started. The wind comes
:05:59. > :06:01.sideways, we have seen the track get absolutely soaked, that could
:06:02. > :06:07.disrupt the schedule as well. It makes it a little bit of a change.
:06:08. > :06:12.1000 metres here. How will the conditions affect the riders?
:06:13. > :06:16.Humidity makes a big difference, makes it difficult to dissipate the
:06:17. > :06:26.heat. For distance events, it will really tell towards the end. It will
:06:27. > :06:29.impact on the tactics. Rain is forecast, but at the moment it is
:06:30. > :06:35.just windy. Let's hope the only rainbows we see this week are on the
:06:36. > :06:39.jerseys. Fingers crossed. The World Championships are always a milestone
:06:40. > :06:47.on the road to Olympic domination. Performance director of Team GB will
:06:48. > :06:52.be watching this closely. It is that middle stage when we are a little
:06:53. > :06:56.bit out from real. Where are we as far as the British track team is
:06:57. > :07:04.concerned? It is a good analogy you draw. Stop looking backwards, it is
:07:05. > :07:07.gone, it is done, but you are far enough from the Olympics that you
:07:08. > :07:12.can experiment and develop and trying new things. Suddenly there is
:07:13. > :07:18.a real strength in depth and options. Does that make it more
:07:19. > :07:23.exciting? I think so, across the sport, in all aspects of the sport,
:07:24. > :07:30.we're seeing tremendous growth of popularity in the sport. We see that
:07:31. > :07:38.at the top end of the pyramid as well. You cannot coach, and athlete
:07:39. > :07:43.looks over there shoulder and they think, wow, someone is snapping at
:07:44. > :07:48.my heels. They need to keep on performing otherwise they will have
:07:49. > :07:53.my spot. You cannot create that from a coaching body. It is a brilliant
:07:54. > :07:56.thing if you have it. Thankfully we do have that in abundance at the
:07:57. > :08:06.minute. That is one of the secrets of continued success. No wonder the
:08:07. > :08:17.crowd upon their feet. -- the crowd are up on their feet. What will you
:08:18. > :08:20.judge as a success for Cali? You want to see how people compete, how
:08:21. > :08:25.they deal with the competitive environment. You can learn as much
:08:26. > :08:31.as you possibly can at this point in time. But also, selection is an
:08:32. > :08:37.issue for the team events, and you want to see where the other nations
:08:38. > :08:40.are to give you a bit of a line in the sand as to where you are, what
:08:41. > :08:46.you need to do, your focus for the coming season. If there was one gold
:08:47. > :08:50.medal but Sir Dave had to bankers mortgage on, it would be the women's
:08:51. > :08:57.team pursuit. This is what they did in November in the World Cup in
:08:58. > :09:04.Manchester. The race for World Cup gold in the women's team pursuit.
:09:05. > :09:15.Away we go. Laura Trott leads. Settles anon her wheel. -- settles
:09:16. > :09:22.in on her wheel. Miles inside the world record. Watching something
:09:23. > :09:28.special here from these four riders. Two laps to go. You can hardly hear
:09:29. > :09:44.yourself think here. Inside the velodrome, halfway round the final
:09:45. > :09:50.lap. It is about the time, a new world record time, superb cycling.
:09:51. > :09:57.In the team pursuit, it is gold. And another record. And it was another
:09:58. > :10:02.record in the World Cup in Mexico a month or so later. They are
:10:03. > :10:14.incredible. No Dani King this time, Katie Archibald takes her place.
:10:15. > :10:26.It is about the time, it is about the gold. The new world record time.
:10:27. > :10:32.Great Britain breaking record after record. I think it will get to a
:10:33. > :10:37.point where we set a record so high that it will take a lot to break it.
:10:38. > :10:42.At these World Championships, it hasn't got sites, that make it a bit
:10:43. > :10:49.that bash that might make it a bit harder. It is refreshing new a new
:10:50. > :10:55.challenge. We have set the world record six times in a row, better
:10:56. > :11:01.than any of us expected. We never expected of ourselves. We just kind
:11:02. > :11:09.of game for a suitable time but we can get. The rider and the blue is
:11:10. > :11:19.Katie Archibald, a really exciting young talent. It has been a meteoric
:11:20. > :11:23.rise to success for you. It is exciting, it is kind of terrifying.
:11:24. > :11:27.It is a thrill when you say to people this is what I am doing with
:11:28. > :11:33.my life. But when you are lying in bed, thinking, oh my god, this is
:11:34. > :11:38.what I'm doing with my life. The fact there are so many of you, how
:11:39. > :11:42.does that drive you? It is nice to have that healthy competition.
:11:43. > :11:45.Before you think about train to win a gold medal, you're thinking about
:11:46. > :11:50.trying to get yourself into the team. Just trying to be the best
:11:51. > :11:59.individual you can possibly be. Concentrate on those little things.
:12:00. > :12:04.Aiming for the Commonwealth Games, I saw this big picture of Team GB,
:12:05. > :12:07.kind of unattainable people. I didn't think I'd be able to make my
:12:08. > :12:15.way into that team. But, you know... They look unbeatable, even
:12:16. > :12:30.in fallible. It is the women's team pursuit from Cali.
:12:31. > :12:40.Here we go, then. The race for bronze in the women's team pursuit.
:12:41. > :12:47.Australia in the home straight, Poland on the far side of the
:12:48. > :12:57.track. And away we go. Leading first really, Annette Edmondson. Followed
:12:58. > :13:03.by Melissa Hoskins. Getting underway for Poland is Katarzyna Pawlowska,
:13:04. > :13:12.peeling off and taking a position at the back of the line. Hoskins is got
:13:13. > :13:18.the hardest job of all. You get little shelter over that first one.
:13:19. > :13:24.Speeds are so low at the bend. You have got the job of accelerating the
:13:25. > :13:35.team. Moving off the front at the moment. King started in fourth, the
:13:36. > :13:41.most comfortable position. Good turn their for Poland. Peeling off the
:13:42. > :13:47.front for Australia, Amy Cure, the 21-year-old from Tasmania. They have
:13:48. > :13:51.already got a two second advantage for the first kilometre, the
:13:52. > :14:02.Australian four. I think we're going to see a catchier. Australia
:14:03. > :14:10.powering around the track. Even faster than this morning. Australia
:14:11. > :14:14.making light work of this. Borland have gone a little bit quicker, not
:14:15. > :14:30.surprising. It is so windy this morning. Just disappeared off the
:14:31. > :14:37.front. Amy Cure leading the way for Australia. Interesting that the
:14:38. > :14:40.Polish four has chosen to stick with their force spoke front wheels, they
:14:41. > :14:49.have not changed to the slightly more aerodynamic discs BS trillions
:14:50. > :14:52.have. -- discs the Australians have. They have reduced the loss little
:14:53. > :14:59.bit. They are still losing ground quickly. I think we're going to see
:15:00. > :15:03.a catchier. Starting to get an aerodynamic benefits. They are
:15:04. > :15:07.moving into this world created by the Polish team. Isabella King on
:15:08. > :15:16.the front for Australia. King doing a good turn. Annette
:15:17. > :15:40.Edmondson takes up the running. That was a small concertina that we
:15:41. > :15:45.saw there. Australia comfortably riding towards the bronze medal.
:15:46. > :15:47.They might do it in a QuickTime. They will make short work of this
:15:48. > :16:06.one. It is over. Australia take the
:16:07. > :16:08.bronze and they do it in the most decisive fashion possible. Catching
:16:09. > :16:36.their opponents from Poland. Bronze medal for the astray lien
:16:37. > :16:37.team. There was never any doubt about the outcome of this race from
:16:38. > :16:59.the first gun. Riding for Canada, Laura Brown, who
:17:00. > :17:14.won the points race in the World Cup. Allison Beveridge, World Cup
:17:15. > :17:22.winner last month. Joanna Rowsell, a reminder for Great Britain. Elinor
:17:23. > :17:25.Barker, at just 19, world champion. Katie Archibald, at 19, in her first
:17:26. > :17:35.world Championships. We are under way, the final of the
:17:36. > :17:41.women's team pursuit. The race for gold is underway. Joanna Rowsell is
:17:42. > :17:50.one of the most consistent starters in the world in this event.
:17:51. > :17:56.She is going to do it again. Going all the way round. A full lap and a
:17:57. > :18:06.half. She has the very person to do it,
:18:07. > :18:08.who has just taken up the front, it is Laura Trott riding on the front
:18:09. > :18:28.for Great Britain. Change of strategy yet again for
:18:29. > :18:32.this team. The Canadians are riding well again, it is very much on
:18:33. > :18:45.terms. There is nothing in it. The Canadians are in front of
:18:46. > :18:51.Britain. Considerably faster than they were this morning. Canada
:18:52. > :18:57.really taking the race to Great Britain.
:18:58. > :19:04.There is a long way to go in this world Championship final. We did say
:19:05. > :19:11.they would benefit from these smoother conditions. At the moment,
:19:12. > :19:20.they have got the best of the British team.
:19:21. > :19:29.Riding on the front is Jasmin Glaesser, steady and strong for
:19:30. > :19:34.Canada, leading the way. Great Britain had merely a second behind.
:19:35. > :19:39.Both teams are working hard, Canada certainly working very hard to get
:19:40. > :19:47.this pace going. The distance is now four kilometres.
:19:48. > :19:53.Elinor Barker just peeling off the front and now it is Katie Archibald,
:19:54. > :20:02.the 19-year-old from Scotland in her first world Championships.
:20:03. > :20:11.The gap is 1.2 seconds. Canada are riding really strongly. That is a
:20:12. > :20:19.real surprise. Eleanor Barker has just thrown in an enormous term.
:20:20. > :20:28.The Canadians are down to three. The coach says they want Maud. -- want
:20:29. > :20:34.more. I think there could be more to come from the British team.
:20:35. > :20:41.The time is coming down. Great Britain are going to really start to
:20:42. > :20:45.put the foot down. Joanna Rowsell are struggling to get on the wheel.
:20:46. > :20:51.There is a gap and she is not closing it too readily. Potential
:20:52. > :20:57.crack in the British team as well. Elinor Barker riding at the front.
:20:58. > :21:01.Katie Archibald is in second place. Riding at the back behind Joanna
:21:02. > :21:04.Rowsell is Laura Trott. We have a brilliant final year. Canada really
:21:05. > :21:11.taking this race to Great Britain. There is absolutely nothing in it.
:21:12. > :21:15.The British are going to take this now. They have the momentum. They
:21:16. > :21:22.have already just sneaked into the lead. Can they maintain it? Two laps
:21:23. > :21:28.to go. Great Britain are leading the way but not by much. Laura Trott is
:21:29. > :21:32.racing along the front. Still for riders all the way.
:21:33. > :21:39.Joanna Rowsell needs to swing out of the way, get out of the way of the
:21:40. > :21:45.team. As they take the bell, it is rate Britain who lead the way. Katie
:21:46. > :21:51.Archibald just peels off and Laura Trott is having to work really hard.
:21:52. > :21:55.She has lost the wheel. It is Katie Archibald, it is gold for Great
:21:56. > :22:00.Britain. They defend their world title, and they are the champions
:22:01. > :22:04.again. They needed to work for their because Canada really took it to
:22:05. > :22:08.them in the race for gold. We saw with about six laps to go they were
:22:09. > :22:16.being pushed really hard, the cracks started to appear. Joanna Rowsell
:22:17. > :22:19.started to get on the wheel, she did well, she tried to get out of the
:22:20. > :22:24.way but Laura Trott was still in the middle of a change and got caught on
:22:25. > :22:28.the outside. Joanna Rowsell when she looked down and thought there was
:22:29. > :22:31.only two riders, tried to get on the wheel, it was pretty messy. They
:22:32. > :22:34.were lucky they had enough of a buffer to get away from that. Great
:22:35. > :22:44.Britain prevails once again. Congratulations, that looked like
:22:45. > :22:49.hard work out there. It was really hard work. I did not have a great
:22:50. > :22:58.ride but it shows what they are made of. I am so proud. Huge
:22:59. > :22:59.congratulations. A world champion your first world
:23:00. > :23:01.congratulations. A world champion your first championships. How
:23:02. > :23:09.special is it to be part of this team? Very special. You've got to
:23:10. > :23:15.get through the qualifiers. So much training, so much going through your
:23:16. > :23:19.head, it is liberating. A little bit ragged at times but the important
:23:20. > :23:27.thing is to finish in front of the other team. Yes, it is a difficult
:23:28. > :23:35.track to write. It is so different to Manchester. It keeps it
:23:36. > :23:39.interesting. I think everybody expects world records. Obviously a
:23:40. > :23:43.long way off that pace but then everybody has been riding slowly.
:23:44. > :23:46.How did you feel? I think we did well, to be honest. We went a lot
:23:47. > :23:51.slower than we thought we would. But there was a headwind down the back
:23:52. > :23:56.straight so I don't know what we expected. It was obviously a huge
:23:57. > :24:01.improvements we are soupy happy -- super happy. Obviously, getting the
:24:02. > :24:08.selection right has been important. How together is this team? We have
:24:09. > :24:10.pulled together. Obviously Eleanor Barker and Katie Archibald are new
:24:11. > :24:15.to the team, so they are learning the team, learning how we write. But
:24:16. > :24:26.we are world champions now so we must be quite good at it. I need to
:24:27. > :24:30.mention Danny, she did not make the selection but she has been part of
:24:31. > :24:35.the team all week. Gold, as expected, for the women's team
:24:36. > :24:39.pursuit, but it was more difficult than we thought it would be.
:24:40. > :24:44.Absolutely, as the girl said in the interview, the headwind in the
:24:45. > :24:50.qualification, the fact they were inadvertently outdoor velodrome, new
:24:51. > :24:53.people coming into the event, the event being four K for the first
:24:54. > :24:58.time, lots to content with but they did a great job. The dead, but they
:24:59. > :25:03.were pushed by Canada, at one point they were nearly 1.2 seconds up. It
:25:04. > :25:07.is not a position they are used are finding themselves in. I think the
:25:08. > :25:10.Canadians changed their tactics in the final because they knew that
:25:11. > :25:14.Britain would be difficult to beat. They knew they needed to do
:25:15. > :25:21.something different to stretch themselves. The youth the four
:25:22. > :25:30.riders -- they went down to three riders quicker than we expected. Why
:25:31. > :25:34.was Danny King not in the team? She was injured earlier in the year
:25:35. > :25:37.riding at a race and she has had a knee problem that she was struggling
:25:38. > :25:42.with but she has been coming back to form very quickly, but obviously the
:25:43. > :25:48.hat to make a hard call. -- they needed. Team selection is always
:25:49. > :25:51.difficult and they needed to field a team that could cope with the
:25:52. > :25:56.conditions. It is unfortunate for her but she will come back stronger.
:25:57. > :26:02.It got a bit ragged towards the end. What exactly happened there? Eleanor
:26:03. > :26:07.Barker talked about her legs not being there. Sometimes, until you
:26:08. > :26:13.are in a race situation it is hard to predict the things that are
:26:14. > :26:24.happening. It did get messy. Thankfully Laura Trott was able to
:26:25. > :26:30.muscle her way back. It was really important that Laura Trott was
:26:31. > :26:33.keeping close to the line. Laura Trott lost the momentum because
:26:34. > :26:37.Elinor Barker pulled off unexpectedly and she had to shout to
:26:38. > :26:47.get her out of the way. She had to break. Laura changed to give her the
:26:48. > :26:51.front and that was the bell lap, but she wanted to get out of the way as
:26:52. > :26:55.well, so Laura was coming down from her change, and she almost met
:26:56. > :27:01.Elinor Barker's back wheel. She needed to get back underneath her.
:27:02. > :27:12.It was a case of telling her where she wanted to be. That has changed,
:27:13. > :27:17.but it is still a procession for the Brits. How good an experience you
:27:18. > :27:23.think that will be? They got pushed close. I don't think in a team
:27:24. > :27:29.environment it has felt like a procession at all. So much hard work
:27:30. > :27:33.has gone into producing that team. There has been situations where
:27:34. > :27:37.teams have lost riders and not been able to come back and complete the
:27:38. > :27:40.race. That showed the strength of character for the girls in that
:27:41. > :27:45.particular situation. They are working hard all the time, as are
:27:46. > :27:51.those five girls working hard in Manchester. Coming up and snapping
:27:52. > :27:55.at the heels. That competition is going to be really interesting to
:27:56. > :27:59.see who gets the places. We are going to move on to the men's team
:28:00. > :28:02.pursuit now. Not quite as dominant as the women but they are world
:28:03. > :28:17.champions and Olympic gold medal holders.
:28:18. > :28:26.The rhetoric before hand seemed positive enough for the team but
:28:27. > :28:31.they did not have the legs here, two seconds down on medal race
:28:32. > :28:37.qualification. Eighth place, in fact, a far cry from the world
:28:38. > :28:43.record set in London. Some head scratching in the British camp after
:28:44. > :28:49.this one, whilst Denmark and Australia fought it out for Gould
:28:50. > :28:54.and New Zealand for the bronze. -- for gold.
:28:55. > :28:57.Introduction is being made for the men's team pursuit bronze medal
:28:58. > :29:15.race. Dylan Kennett and Marc Ryan, bronze
:29:16. > :29:26.medallists. They are up against Russia.
:29:27. > :29:34.Bronze medal is on the line for these two teams. They started a
:29:35. > :29:40.little too quick, New Zealand, in qualifying. They paid a little bit
:29:41. > :29:42.towards the backend. Interesting to see whether they opt for same start.
:29:43. > :29:50.It certainly looks to be the case. Russia have speeded up a little bit,
:29:51. > :30:06.I would say. The wind has died down. You really
:30:07. > :30:12.want to start into the headwind, then as you build speed, you get a
:30:13. > :30:20.little bit of a push. Not too bad at the moment. Pretty close at the
:30:21. > :30:28.moment. It is not changing much, either.
:30:29. > :30:37.And Russia just turning the tables a little bit. Winding things up.
:30:38. > :30:41.Almost two seconds quicker than their time this morning, New Zealand
:30:42. > :30:53.have also got a little bit faster. Have the Russians gone out to
:30:54. > :30:55.quick? We look at New Zealand. New Zealand looked to be working
:30:56. > :31:02.slightly harder than the Russians. Hard to tell. The Russians look
:31:03. > :31:12.quite composed, body language says the New Zealand four... New Zealand
:31:13. > :31:17.are back in front at the moment. Technically New Zealand is looking
:31:18. > :31:28.fantastic at the moment. Very attacked positions. Three tenths of
:31:29. > :31:38.a second in it. Coming up now. Eating into that advantage.
:31:39. > :31:52.It is a difficult tractor ride, -- track to ride. The bends quickly
:31:53. > :31:55.over, no room for error. If you're a little bit slow on the change,
:31:56. > :32:00.suddenly they are riding away from you on the straights. When the
:32:01. > :32:16.fatigue sets in, errors start to happen. New Zealand has just started
:32:17. > :32:20.to slow a little bit. 610 this is the second -- six tenths of a
:32:21. > :32:25.second. Putting themselves in a winning position. They are going to
:32:26. > :32:33.three. Bronze medallists at London 2012, bronze medallists in the World
:32:34. > :32:38.Championships as well. Already down to three, really driving
:32:39. > :32:45.themselves. They have raised very aggressively. Russia are struggling
:32:46. > :32:55.even more. Nine tenths of a second down. No margin for error for New
:32:56. > :33:02.Zealand. They have taken this by the scruff of the neck, and they have
:33:03. > :33:11.got a sufficient bar for man -- sufficient buffer man. New Zealand
:33:12. > :33:17.are heading for bronze. Aaron Gate leading the way, Pieter Bulling as
:33:18. > :33:25.well. Too much for the Russians in this bronze medal race. The third
:33:26. > :33:32.man is struggling. They had a little bit of room to spare. Russia well
:33:33. > :33:37.behind them in the end. New Zealand claiming the bronze medal in the
:33:38. > :33:44.men's team pursuit. Well deserved, a very aggressive ride. Even when they
:33:45. > :33:48.fatigue they held it together, they were right on the ragged edge as
:33:49. > :33:51.they went into the final lap. Use the resources well, no egos getting
:33:52. > :34:03.in the way. A new track record for New Zealand.
:34:04. > :34:23.On a warm, sultry night in Cali. We have got a fine all in the men's
:34:24. > :34:29.team pursuit, Denmark always put a good team pursuit quartet out.
:34:30. > :34:32.Against Australia. The team pursuit world champions this time last year,
:34:33. > :34:39.Australia beat Great Britain in the final. They are up against Denmark
:34:40. > :34:45.this time. Glenn O'Shea, former WorldCom the champion, Alex
:34:46. > :34:58.Edmondson, Mitchell Mulhearn making his debut.
:34:59. > :35:13.Denmark with Casper von Folsach, Rasmus Quaade, Alex Rasmussen, a
:35:14. > :35:18.real mixture of youth and experience for Denmark, up against Australia,
:35:19. > :35:30.who have a conveyor belt of team pursuit talent. Never rule the
:35:31. > :35:36.Australians out. They know how to provide aggressively, technically,
:35:37. > :35:40.so many riders of a high standard. Completing the second lap. Barely
:35:41. > :35:57.anything between them. Hanson is one of the stronger riders
:35:58. > :36:00.this morning. The Danes starting to crack a little bit towards the end
:36:01. > :36:11.of their ride. They looked after each other, drove hard for that
:36:12. > :36:16.qualifying ride this morning. The Australians are used to being in
:36:17. > :36:22.this position. Annual attendance, aren't they, in the team pursuit
:36:23. > :36:28.final? Less than two tenths of a second in it. Denmark with the upper
:36:29. > :36:36.hand at the moment. With ten laps to go. Less than one tenth of a second.
:36:37. > :36:45.The Australians started faster this morning. The Danes turning that
:36:46. > :36:49.around a little bit. A strong turn at the front for Australia at the
:36:50. > :36:56.moment. Suddenly it is Denmark who have swung the race their way little
:36:57. > :37:02.bit. A long-term for him as well. They gain that length. Mitchell
:37:03. > :37:08.Mulhearn riding on the front. The gap between them is wider. Australia
:37:09. > :37:12.will have to dig really deep year if they are going to turn this around.
:37:13. > :37:19.The red machine is really in full swing. Australia are digging in,
:37:20. > :37:31.proving to be star Verne. -- proving to be star Verne. Just had to dive
:37:32. > :37:39.back into the wheels. He is going to be have to be careful. The
:37:40. > :37:45.Australians are down to three men. Some ropey turns this morning once
:37:46. > :37:50.the teams were down to three. It is a tough track to change on. Mulhern
:37:51. > :38:01.is really getting stuck in on the front. He has got Glenn O'Shea) dim
:38:02. > :38:10.-- right behind him. Struggling to close that gap. Both teams down to
:38:11. > :38:16.three. Who wants at the most, three laps to go? Australia suddenly
:38:17. > :38:22.opening up a sizeable lead here on Denmark. What have Denmark got left?
:38:23. > :38:28.The Australians of push themselves back into this race, tearing away
:38:29. > :38:32.from the Danes now. The experience has shown, the Australians are going
:38:33. > :38:41.to get it. A brilliant ride here from Australia. The Danish team are
:38:42. > :38:46.cracking. I think it's all over. The Australians holding it together.
:38:47. > :38:49.Australia take the bell, three quarters of a lap to go. They are
:38:50. > :38:55.going to defend their world team pursuit title. The personnel not
:38:56. > :39:01.exactly the same, the colour of the medal will be. It is gold for
:39:02. > :39:05.Australia, and silver for Denmark. A great win for the Australians, for
:39:06. > :39:14.Glenn O'Shea, Alex Edmondson, Mitchell Mulhearn and Miles
:39:15. > :39:18.Scotstoun. I great ride for them. They fought their way back into that
:39:19. > :39:30.race. They had to fight for it, long turns as well. Mitchell Mulhearn did
:39:31. > :39:37.some monstrously long turns there. He certainly did, at least three.
:39:38. > :39:38.That was the clincher for his team. Give them that extra bit of rest,
:39:39. > :39:55.raised the pace. Australia celebrate gold again.
:39:56. > :39:59.Great Britain leaving these championships knowing that there is
:40:00. > :40:05.plenty of work to do in terms of the men's team pursuit.
:40:06. > :40:11.Plenty to do, silver months ago. Jamie, coming to you first, that is
:40:12. > :40:16.a massive disappointment, isn't it? For the British quartet to finish in
:40:17. > :40:20.eighth place. I am sure they are disappointed. I'm sure they were
:40:21. > :40:24.aware going into the competition that they would be up for a top
:40:25. > :40:28.podium spot. Sometimes these hits are hard to take mentally. Picking
:40:29. > :40:33.yourself up on the backside of this and getting home and training,
:40:34. > :40:37.seeing that maybe next year you can turn it over, is going to be a
:40:38. > :40:42.challenge for them. We heard from Dave, they are experimenting, they
:40:43. > :40:48.might be playing with something new. Maybe it's not working. Maybe
:40:49. > :40:52.they will change play. They are experimenting, Sarah. But a year
:40:53. > :40:59.ago, you could say they were experimenting. This was a slower
:41:00. > :41:01.time than it was in Minsk. That is something that will cause a lot of
:41:02. > :41:07.head scratching back here in Manchester, isn't it? Yes, there are
:41:08. > :41:13.three young riders working with them there. They might not be at the same
:41:14. > :41:17.level. We have got to work out how people respond and competition
:41:18. > :41:23.situations, the pressure, it was a difficult velodrome to ride. There
:41:24. > :41:28.are lots of things to throw riders off, especially if it is their first
:41:29. > :41:31.World Championships. They will regroup, look at the personnel they
:41:32. > :41:38.have got, and bits of them together for next year. Stephen Burke will
:41:39. > :41:44.come back, that will be a big plus. You will then have the possibility
:41:45. > :41:48.of Sir Bradley Wiggins, who wants to do one more year on the road and
:41:49. > :41:55.come back to the track. Presumably he will be looking at team proceed?
:41:56. > :42:00.It'll be a challenge. We have seen him change over the years to
:42:01. > :42:08.condition to do that to France -- the Tour de France. The team pursuit
:42:09. > :42:15.takes a lot more power. I think it will be a struggle, I honestly do. I
:42:16. > :42:19.don't know if he can do it. Lance Armstrong called Sir Bradley Wiggins
:42:20. > :42:25.the best pursuit riders in the world. There is a place in the team,
:42:26. > :42:31.if you look at that, if he does the work? There are subtle differences.
:42:32. > :42:34.The power and strength you need to do those fast laps on the front, and
:42:35. > :42:43.your recovery in the wheels while the other riders take their turns.
:42:44. > :42:49.Ultimately, how the team plan is put together, the team pursuit squad has
:42:50. > :42:54.to work for a lot longer than a year but Bradley has to give them.
:42:55. > :42:59.Stephen Burke has been ill, there has been problems with health we
:43:00. > :43:06.need to address. We are still two and have years from the Olympics,
:43:07. > :43:10.there is so much time. These young riders have a very valuable
:43:11. > :43:16.experience to take forward. We are going to move on to the individual
:43:17. > :43:20.pursuit, which is a world of pain. Joanna Rowsell is back on the track
:43:21. > :43:32.again. Let's catch up with the bronze medal race.
:43:33. > :43:41.Almost ready. The women's individual pursuit final start here. The race
:43:42. > :43:57.for bronze, Australia against Ukraine. It is Your starting in the
:43:58. > :44:03.home straight. -- Amy Cure. Really getting this going. Nearly three
:44:04. > :44:16.quarters of a lap out of the saddle there. Giving her an early advantage
:44:17. > :44:23.back -- by just over two tenths. Just about to complete the second
:44:24. > :44:30.lap. 500 metres covered, the gap has gone up by another six tenths of a
:44:31. > :44:39.second. Amy Cure taking early control of this race. 1.2 seconds
:44:40. > :44:46.ahead after the opening kilometre. Looks like we're heading for a
:44:47. > :45:03.similar thing. It is going to form so far, this race, in the women's
:45:04. > :45:06.individual pursuit. Both considerably slower than they were
:45:07. > :45:11.this morning over 14 kilometres. Slightly closer together. Not
:45:12. > :45:27.prepared to lay down here. Seven laps to go for the two riders.
:45:28. > :45:35.There is not much in it at the moment.
:45:36. > :45:44.She has got the gap down to just half a second. Seems to be working
:45:45. > :45:46.much harder of the two. It will be five laps to go next time over the
:45:47. > :46:02.line. Just the 10th of the second now. We
:46:03. > :46:04.have seen a lot of upsets today. Are we going to see another one? I don't
:46:05. > :46:22.think so but it is a valiant effort. Both of them considerably slower
:46:23. > :46:29.than they were in qualification. Three laps to go.
:46:30. > :46:46.Still looks quite smooth. I think she is already giving it her all. It
:46:47. > :46:47.is still so close between the two. Three seconds slower than they were
:46:48. > :47:01.this morning. Both of them fatigued. They take the bell. One lap to go.
:47:02. > :47:09.The bronze medal on the line. What the gap. Amy Cure find that little
:47:10. > :47:13.bit extra. She is almost sprinting down the back straight. She looks
:47:14. > :47:19.certain to take the bronze medal but it is an aggressive ride from her
:47:20. > :47:24.opponent, who has really made a race of it. Amy Cure takes the victory,
:47:25. > :47:29.it is bronze for Australia in the Individual Pursuit.
:47:30. > :47:43.The time for Amy Cure... 3.36. That is six seconds slower than
:47:44. > :47:50.qualifying. Tells you something about the conditions we've got here.
:47:51. > :48:03.3.37 for her opponent. Here we go, gold is at stake. It is
:48:04. > :48:11.Joanna Rowsell or Great Britain against the defending champion.
:48:12. > :48:20.Joanna Rowsell is capable of starting faster than the American.
:48:21. > :48:25.What has she got left in the tank after those raids yesterday. Also
:48:26. > :48:33.the qualifying earlier today. She is well in the lead at the moment.
:48:34. > :48:40.Considerably in front at the moment. Just watching on the track, it is
:48:41. > :48:51.visible. After two laps her league is over a second. -- lead. There was
:48:52. > :48:54.very little between them in qualification. She might be trying
:48:55. > :48:59.to put pressure on her opponent early on in this final. She has been
:49:00. > :49:03.shown by the thought that she is considerably ahead of schedule, we
:49:04. > :49:10.must hope that she has not gone out to fast. She will be wary of Sarah
:49:11. > :49:15.Hammer because she knows how strong she is on the other side of the
:49:16. > :49:23.track. At the kilometre mark, it is down to almost a second exactly, it
:49:24. > :49:27.is still a decent buffer. It certainly is. Experienced
:49:28. > :49:28.campaigner, Joanna Rowsell, we must hope she has not gone off too
:49:29. > :49:40.quickly. Bags of experience. She is and Olympic champion,
:49:41. > :49:44.national champion. Sarah Hammer always has something of an ungainly
:49:45. > :49:51.style. When I first saw her, I thought, she is not going to be
:49:52. > :49:56.quick, she has proved me wrong time and time again. It is still a good
:49:57. > :50:00.buffer. Joanna Rowsell leads the way. It is going to be a titanic
:50:01. > :50:14.struggle over this final five and a half laps. How big is the gap? It is
:50:15. > :50:18.staying at nine -tenths. Can Joanna Rowsell hang on here? You can see
:50:19. > :50:28.the grimace on her face. She is digging deep to keep that lead. We
:50:29. > :50:36.might find she is now getting checks on her opponent. The gap remained
:50:37. > :50:41.the same. Relapse to go -- three to go. Three between Joanna Rowsell and
:50:42. > :50:46.the gold medal. Sarah Hammer is fighting back but it is holding. We
:50:47. > :50:50.are expecting an onslaught from Sarah Hammer. She will not give up
:50:51. > :50:55.that title lightly. She will fight for all she is worth, so far this
:50:56. > :51:02.has been a superb ride from Joanna Rowsell. She is almost mirroring her
:51:03. > :51:06.ride of this morning. It is the American that is slowing down. Both
:51:07. > :51:12.of them are rocking and rolling a little bit now. Surely Joanna
:51:13. > :51:17.Rowsell has got this one? All she has got to do is stay upright and
:51:18. > :51:21.keep on rolling. She is one lap away from the world title for the
:51:22. > :51:25.Individual Pursuit. Here she comes, it really hurts, but it will be
:51:26. > :51:29.worth it if she can keep on going and hang onto this lead. Sarah
:51:30. > :51:32.Hammer sprinting towards the line, and here comes Joanna Rowsell, it is
:51:33. > :51:38.gold for Joanna Rowsell of Great Britain, she backs up that team
:51:39. > :51:44.pursuit gold with an Individual Pursuit as well. Sensational riding
:51:45. > :51:53.from Joanna Rowsell. World champion in the Individual Pursuit. She led
:51:54. > :51:58.from start to finish their, -- start to finish, and she did not let her
:51:59. > :52:05.back in. That is what you call backing up. She went faster than she
:52:06. > :52:11.did in qualifying. That is often what this event is about, not just
:52:12. > :52:18.winning but being able to do it twice. That is exactly what she did.
:52:19. > :52:26.Never let Sarah Hammer get the nose in front. Defended all the way
:52:27. > :52:31.through. She was getting guidance all the way through so she knew
:52:32. > :52:34.where she was. She really believed in herself. You could tell from the
:52:35. > :52:40.way she started that she had great belief. That was superb from Joanna
:52:41. > :52:47.Rowsell. That is quite a scalp, beating Sarah Hammer in the final so
:52:48. > :52:55.convincingly. Congratulations, that was a phenomenal performance against
:52:56. > :52:58.very special cyclists. Your first individual world Championship medal.
:52:59. > :53:03.What does this mean to you? The absolute world. Team pursuit is
:53:04. > :53:08.something I train for everyday, but ever since I started cycling I have
:53:09. > :53:11.always dreams of being Individual Pursuit world champion. Sarah Hammer
:53:12. > :53:15.has been at the top for as long as I can remember so it is an amazing
:53:16. > :53:18.feeling to beat her as well. She is the world record holder at this
:53:19. > :53:24.distance and I cannot believe I got a new PB in these conditions, it is
:53:25. > :53:28.not even that warm in here tonight. I cannot believe it. You did it so
:53:29. > :53:32.well in qualifying, to put a performance like that into the final
:53:33. > :53:39.is incredible. What was the strategy? You went it very hard at
:53:40. > :53:44.the start. I did not mean to. In qualifying I rode a very well paced
:53:45. > :53:53.ride, I went out slightly too hard, then I came off in the middle. My
:53:54. > :54:01.aim was to do a good start, and really squeeze the middle. After six
:54:02. > :54:08.laps, I was being told about Sarah . I could not believe it. He said I
:54:09. > :54:15.had got halfway, I had to finish it. Amazing world Championships for
:54:16. > :54:19.you. I am absolutely over the moon. I broke my collarbone in August and
:54:20. > :54:27.I missed a lot of training in the summer. I came into the track season
:54:28. > :54:30.not as fit as I would have liked. I worked really hard throughout the
:54:31. > :54:33.winter, which is the toughest time of the year to work hard because you
:54:34. > :54:38.are battling with the weather back home. It is great to come here. I
:54:39. > :54:47.did well in the it. It is nice to get the summer. This time last year,
:54:48. > :54:58.when the world Championships were in mince, -- Minsk, she was sitting in
:54:59. > :55:02.your chair. She took a break. She has missed a lot but it has served
:55:03. > :55:06.her well. She did some good training on the road, at it did not come into
:55:07. > :55:13.fruition for her because she broke her collarbone. She is such a tough
:55:14. > :55:20.character. She is always going to bounce back and I am just so proud
:55:21. > :55:25.of her. This is your world, Individual Pursuit. How difficult
:55:26. > :55:32.was that? She had qualification and the final team pursuit two days ago.
:55:33. > :55:38.That is a big task. Exactly. She did a kilometre is yesterday, and those
:55:39. > :55:46.lapping three quarters turns. To come down to a schedule for team
:55:47. > :55:56.pursuit then Individual Pursuit, you need to check yourself for the ride
:55:57. > :55:59.she did their, and that is difficult, recalibrating that in
:56:00. > :56:04.your brain. She did it brilliantly and she could see around so much
:56:05. > :56:07.pressure early on. It is brilliant to beat Sarah Hammer, the world
:56:08. > :56:19.record-holder. She looked as if she had at -- had got the victory. She
:56:20. > :56:21.will do that in Glasgow as well, and hopefully win the Commonwealth
:56:22. > :56:27.games. When you see an athlete perform like that, she put her hand
:56:28. > :56:33.over her mouth because she could not believe how fast she was. It is
:56:34. > :56:39.awesome. It is lovely to see. The amount of effort she puts into her
:56:40. > :56:43.work. She is a great athlete, she has matured, she is in her prime. I
:56:44. > :56:49.think she is going to be all the way to Rio de Janiero, hopefully getting
:56:50. > :56:55.some medals. She is in her prime, she has a great career. This time
:56:56. > :57:00.last year, we were talking about who might step in and fill the void left
:57:01. > :57:11.by Sir Chris Hoy and Vicky Pendleton. Step up, Becky James.
:57:12. > :57:16.What are your best memories? The run-up I had into the tournament,
:57:17. > :57:20.the whole competition was so relaxing, came away with bronze
:57:21. > :57:29.medal. That was the most unexpected things. James is in tremendous form.
:57:30. > :57:36.She will need to be to pull this out of the bag. That put such a high on
:57:37. > :57:41.the beginning of the competition, it helps for the rest of the week. To
:57:42. > :57:46.win that first world title at senior level, how special is that?
:57:47. > :57:57.Incredible. To win a senior world title at 21, I could never ask for
:57:58. > :58:01.anything more. How will it play out tactically? It is all or nothing,
:58:02. > :58:09.the world title at stake. Becky James is going to do it! I remember
:58:10. > :58:14.that last day being so hard, I was so tired, and after you race, you
:58:15. > :58:21.feel hungover. My legs felt awful. To come away with another gold medal
:58:22. > :58:28.is just incredible. Becky James leading the way. Still playing cat
:58:29. > :58:32.and mouse. Becky James with a great chance to become a double world
:58:33. > :58:40.champion. She has done it. Becky James celebrates for the second time
:58:41. > :58:41.in 24 hours. I had ridden so hard after the Olympics. I had the
:58:42. > :58:47.in 24 hours. I had ridden so hard after the perfect running from July
:58:48. > :58:54.to August. I relax a little bit more this year, I have done the things I
:58:55. > :58:57.wanted to do. I went to Australia, it is my last channel to enjoy
:58:58. > :58:59.myself this year because after that it will be a much shorter break
:59:00. > :59:05.because it is not that long until the Olympics. I want to get my head
:59:06. > :59:10.down. I am working hard towards Rio de Janiero. 12 months ago, Becky
:59:11. > :59:14.James came to the world championships under the radar. No
:59:15. > :59:17.such luck this time. Two title to defend, and also the team sprint.
:59:18. > :59:35.That was a bronze medal. This time, she teamed up.
:59:36. > :59:44.Jess varnish for Great Britain. -- Jessica Varnish. At stake is the
:59:45. > :59:51.bronze medal in the world Championships. They are underway.
:59:52. > :59:56.Could start. Very solid. Becky James is straight onto the wheel. Sliding
:59:57. > :00:04.away a little bit. Put in a good start. Coming up to take the Bell,
:00:05. > :00:09.Great Britain just a little bit outside, one tenth of a second.
:00:10. > :00:13.There is work to do for Becky James. How much speed as she got on her
:00:14. > :00:17.legs? Can she find that little bit of extra from somewhere to turn the
:00:18. > :00:31.ride into bronze bust and Mark yes, she can! Becky James, with the ride.
:00:32. > :00:37.33.03 to is the time for Great Britain. This event was decided in
:00:38. > :00:41.the blinking of an eye, that is exactly what happened. Jessica
:00:42. > :00:46.Varnish and Becky James win bronze for Great Britain. Britain's first
:00:47. > :00:53.medal of the UCI World Track Cycling World Championships. Very consistent
:00:54. > :01:06.start from Varnish. The Russian turned it around. Fantastic finish
:01:07. > :01:13.from Becky James, really good, her second lap was really quick and that
:01:14. > :01:16.is what made the difference. The world and Olympic champions, the
:01:17. > :01:25.favourites to retain the title. Miriam Welte and Kristina Vogel. On
:01:26. > :01:43.paper, it should be clear cut. The track seems to be running a
:01:44. > :01:52.little bit faster this evening in all events. The wind has died down.
:01:53. > :02:04.Last few seconds before this World Championship final. Lin Junhong for
:02:05. > :02:07.China, Miriam Welte for Germany. Two collapse to determine who will be
:02:08. > :02:14.the world champion. Can Germany win it for the third year running? Have
:02:15. > :02:22.China got more in the tank then we suspect? They have got work to do in
:02:23. > :02:30.every sense. Nice change over, they are. Germany with a commanding lead,
:02:31. > :02:34.which will carry them all the way to the gold medal, just a couple of
:02:35. > :02:45.seconds away. Kristina Vogel crosses the line, 32.440 the winning time.
:02:46. > :02:50.Germany are the world champions. Superb in qualifying and in the
:02:51. > :02:55.final. There was never any doubt about the destination of the gold
:02:56. > :03:00.medal. Something of a cliche, but they were indeed in a class of their
:03:01. > :03:06.own. Faster out of the blocks than they were in qualifying. 18.5, by
:03:07. > :03:17.far the fastest opening lap of the series. Very skilful player.
:03:18. > :03:21.Congratulations, a great start your World Championships. Jessica, for
:03:22. > :03:28.you to get a medal after the injury, back into the team, it must
:03:29. > :03:31.be special? Yes, the first thing was to get into the team, and I am
:03:32. > :03:35.really happy to get on the podium tonight. I feel like we're on the
:03:36. > :03:40.way back up together. It was really good tonight. Two really strong
:03:41. > :03:50.rights from you to get things running. I had to try and step up
:03:51. > :03:55.the gears, for the future. I have always been on the smaller gears,
:03:56. > :04:01.but it works quite well tonight. A good starting point really. This is
:04:02. > :04:07.how it all started in Minsk for you with the bronze medal. I am really
:04:08. > :04:14.happy with this. It is a really good start for us. Two and a half years
:04:15. > :04:25.out from the Olympics, it is good to be up there and getting medals. How
:04:26. > :04:28.does it feel? It is really good. A little bit of a wind, but it is the
:04:29. > :04:32.same for everybody so you've just got to take it as it comes. The
:04:33. > :04:38.track was really good, good atmosphere, looking forward to the
:04:39. > :04:42.rest of the week. Another bronze in the women's team
:04:43. > :04:48.sprint. Let's quickly talk about the weather here. How much difference
:04:49. > :04:52.does it make when you're used to training in controllable conditions
:04:53. > :04:58.normally? These riders have raced outside. There are a couple of
:04:59. > :05:03.tracks in the UK these competitors will compete in. Most riders would
:05:04. > :05:08.not let it affect them at all, really. In most sprinting events,
:05:09. > :05:13.you have got the five spoke wheels, good control on the bike. The skill
:05:14. > :05:20.level on these riders is immense. It is not an issue. In terms of that
:05:21. > :05:26.race for the British pair, a bit disappointed not to get in the gold
:05:27. > :05:33.medal race? The times are good, Germany is on another planet right
:05:34. > :05:37.now. Both the men and the women. They are definitely the ones to
:05:38. > :05:42.beat. Team GB has got to step it up big time. Jessica has been
:05:43. > :05:50.struggling with injuries, that is good to hold her development back --
:05:51. > :05:55.going to hold her development back. You never feel like you can really
:05:56. > :06:02.give it 100%. And that is a difficult thing for a coach to deal
:06:03. > :06:09.with. And it is so frustrating as an athlete. You will push a little bit
:06:10. > :06:15.and then you will be pushed back. Every day, your fingers are crossed.
:06:16. > :06:20.I have been there, it is not fun. A big change for Becky James, she came
:06:21. > :06:26.to Minsk last year under the radar, walks away double world champion.
:06:27. > :06:30.She was a double junior world champion before that. She missed out
:06:31. > :06:35.on the games in London. She has always been a huge talent. As she
:06:36. > :06:39.said, double world champion senior at 21 is an incredible place to be.
:06:40. > :06:44.That experience will put in good stead for the forthcoming year. She
:06:45. > :06:49.should be able to draw on that and know that she has that ability. She
:06:50. > :06:58.also gets a chance to race in Wales will stop -- race in Wales. She will
:06:59. > :07:04.love that. She raised in Delhi and had a great time out there. She will
:07:05. > :07:11.have expectation on her shoulder, the Australians will be there. It is
:07:12. > :07:16.going to be really interesting. That was the women's team sprint, now the
:07:17. > :07:22.men's team sprint. Both gold medallists from London, and a
:07:23. > :07:48.takeover from Sir Chris Hoy. Philippi mistaking the team off, --
:07:49. > :07:51.Philip Hinds. The qualification runs the Brits miss out on the bronze
:07:52. > :07:56.medal race by just over one tenth of a second, finishing in fifth place.
:07:57. > :07:59.A disappointing performance. New Zealand qualify the quickest, and
:08:00. > :08:01.they face Germany for gold, with Russia and France facing for the
:08:02. > :08:19.bronze. On the far side of the track,
:08:20. > :08:32.Gregory Bauge tries to take off in fine style for the French. Three
:08:33. > :08:42.laps, it is Russia against France. The Russians are actually in front,
:08:43. > :08:47.two tenths of a second ahead. The Russians have paid a big price in
:08:48. > :08:55.energy terms here. They are still ahead of the French here, on this
:08:56. > :09:07.final lap. Who wants that the most? Into the finishing straight, so
:09:08. > :09:14.close exploration Mark -- so close! Michael D'Almeida secures the medal
:09:15. > :09:23.for Franz. Off the wheel from the word go, there is a price to be paid
:09:24. > :09:30.for that. Michael D'Almeida was so comfortable on the wheel their, his
:09:31. > :09:38.last lap save them, didn't it? Gregory Bauge went slower, 17.5
:09:39. > :09:46.opener from him. He is off the pace. Michael D'Almeida is in great shape.
:09:47. > :09:54.At least there will be happy people at breakfast tomorrow in the hotel.
:09:55. > :10:07.The French have secured a medal. So, so close. The French have quietly
:10:08. > :10:16.confident air about them. They have got a bronze medal. It was a
:10:17. > :10:20.thrilling finish. We will need to watch out for him if he is writing
:10:21. > :10:28.later in the competition. I would say his form looks fantastic. He
:10:29. > :10:34.looked like he was cruising. The final year. Rene Enders, Robert
:10:35. > :10:38.Forstemann and Maximilian Levy for Germany. The defending world
:10:39. > :10:47.champions, Olympic bronze medallists. Up against New Zealand.
:10:48. > :10:57.Ethan Mitchell, Sam Dawkins -- Sam Webster and Eddie Dawkins.
:10:58. > :11:11.Ethan Mitchell, a world junior champion, can he turn it into a gold
:11:12. > :11:25.medal? I great start for both teams. Great off the wheel. Very, very
:11:26. > :11:29.close. Robert Forstemann, they take the bell. Who has got it at the
:11:30. > :11:33.Bell? Germany lead the way, but it is so close. Fractions of a second
:11:34. > :11:38.in it. Dawkins begins Maximilian Levy. Who can dig that little bit
:11:39. > :11:44.deeper? Who can find that little bit extra? The gold medal goes to New
:11:45. > :11:50.Zealand, they have done it! New Zealand take the gold. Silver last
:11:51. > :11:56.year in Minsk, now it is gold in Colombia. Ethan Mitchell, Sam
:11:57. > :12:01.Webster and Eddie Dawkins will stand on top of the podium. The world
:12:02. > :12:10.champions from Germany have been deposed. 42.840 the winning time for
:12:11. > :12:22.New Zealand. Fantastic last lap by Dawkins. Dawkins took right down
:12:23. > :12:31.with an aero helmet. Both teams superb. Germany, the Masters in this
:12:32. > :12:37.event, so strong. But New Zealand have charged through. Rallied well,
:12:38. > :12:46.the German three in the final. But the New Zealanders faster again,
:12:47. > :12:52.raised their game when they had to. Jason, it is the worst place to
:12:53. > :13:00.finish. What was your assessment? Yeah, it wasn't ideal. We were
:13:01. > :13:05.fairly confident. But it wasn't meant to be. I don't think we did
:13:06. > :13:08.anything wrong as such. When you look at the gaps, we closed up a
:13:09. > :13:15.little bit. Unfortunately so has everyone else. What are the
:13:16. > :13:21.conditions like? It is a little bit windy, not too bad around the bottom
:13:22. > :13:27.of the track. It is a little bit different to the indoor races we do.
:13:28. > :13:37.It is nothing we haven't seen before. You have to adapt to it.
:13:38. > :13:47.What is your court's thoughts? -- your coach's thoughts? When you come
:13:48. > :13:53.off, you are clustered -- flustered and a bit upset. When you step back
:13:54. > :13:59.and have a look at it, we did all right. We made a good step forward,
:14:00. > :14:04.particularly as a team. Hopefully we will keep chipping away. An
:14:05. > :14:12.improvement on the performance in Minsk. You must see some progress
:14:13. > :14:18.there? Yeah, massive improvement. We were not a team in Minsk, we were
:14:19. > :14:22.all over the place. That was much more as a unit, much more together,
:14:23. > :14:28.much cleaner. We will keep working on it. We have got the legs, we have
:14:29. > :14:35.got it in us, we have got to get those little bits added altogether.
:14:36. > :14:43.A little bit every lap. We need to tidy it up, and hopefully, that will
:14:44. > :14:50.put us right in the mix. Last time Britain won this title was
:14:51. > :14:54.when this man was in the team. It is interesting isn't it? Britain gets
:14:55. > :15:00.it right at the Olympics, but two have not won a world title... It is
:15:01. > :15:04.a long time, when you think about it. It is a hard one, the different
:15:05. > :15:09.dynamics of the groups. It is such an explosive event. Team members
:15:10. > :15:14.change in a note. He has definitely got his work cut out, he is a young
:15:15. > :15:21.kid, developing physically. Still learning. He has definitely got a
:15:22. > :15:26.lot to do. I do want to put the result on him, but that is the
:15:27. > :15:34.weakest link right now. When did the cracks appear? We all other little
:15:35. > :15:43.knowledge about cycling. Where is he losing it? On that video there, he
:15:44. > :15:51.wobbled, when he was coming round the first turn. He was not
:15:52. > :15:54.super-smooth. When you see the rider pulling away in front of you, you're
:15:55. > :15:58.panicking, getting on the back of him. It is hard, really hard for
:15:59. > :16:06.him, there is so much force of that line, and he is not quite strong
:16:07. > :16:09.enough. It will come. You were saying at breakfast that Sir Chris
:16:10. > :16:18.Hoy used to be terrified of your style. He was. He was asking me not
:16:19. > :16:25.to go off the line too fast. You have different gears, so the first
:16:26. > :16:29.man has different gears. It takes a lot more to get going. You have a
:16:30. > :16:38.little bit of it on the track but not a lot. It is not the focus, the
:16:39. > :16:49.start, the third man is focusing on those laps. Has got time. Jason
:16:50. > :16:53.Kenny is an interesting guy. He can sometimes be taciturn, but he seemed
:16:54. > :17:00.very relaxed their especially off the back of the disappointing
:17:01. > :17:06.performance. Here's an interesting guy, Jason, and he has plenty to be
:17:07. > :17:15.pleased about. We have been through this position, dominated at the
:17:16. > :17:20.Olympics. That is really the focus. They are putting those building
:17:21. > :17:25.blocks together. Jason is very upbeat and it is great. There is a
:17:26. > :17:30.different dynamic in the team for Jason. He is an elder statesman. He
:17:31. > :17:35.still looks freshfaced. He looks incredibly young. He has got to take
:17:36. > :17:40.on a leadership role in the way that he did not when Sir Chris Hoy was in
:17:41. > :17:44.the team and Victoria Pendleton. Chris was definitely the team
:17:45. > :17:49.leader. He is a funny guy, everybody would rally around him. He would
:17:50. > :17:56.pick people up, he was definitely the leader. Now Jason has got to
:17:57. > :18:03.assume that role to some degree. It is a really young team. We've got
:18:04. > :18:09.time, don't panic yet. It is funny, world title as an athlete means a
:18:10. > :18:14.lot, I cherish my world medals, but in terms of Dave Brailsford, the
:18:15. > :18:20.Olympics is that important one. We're going to move on to the men's
:18:21. > :18:25.race, this was the event where Ireland took the title. This is how
:18:26. > :18:43.the defence went. King Lok Cheung looks as though he
:18:44. > :18:50.might have had a lap out because he is going very slowly. He was going
:18:51. > :18:57.slowly around the top of the track and is now joining in. There is the
:18:58. > :19:02.stop. Like change. He nipped off to have a bike change. That is why we
:19:03. > :19:06.did not see him. In the meantime, Ivan Kovalev, just the two of them.
:19:07. > :19:24.Everybody else is a lap down. Years hanging 30 metres off the
:19:25. > :19:30.back. Can he close that gap down? It is really hurting, really really
:19:31. > :19:35.hurting. You can see it on his face. I think he might be done here, Sony
:19:36. > :19:39.but far. I don't think they are going to let up now. He is catching
:19:40. > :19:45.some bodies but they have already been distanced. I'm not sure how
:19:46. > :19:54.much more he's got to give. It is a fantastic effort from Martyn Irvine
:19:55. > :19:59.to put himself in. The gap is growing. This group have come back
:20:00. > :20:04.together, and I think they are being overhauled by the Palatine, which
:20:05. > :20:11.has not relented. Only Cheung and Ivan Kovalev have got that
:20:12. > :20:15.advantage. Unless somebody goes for an attack, it is possible because
:20:16. > :20:22.they have worked so hard. Surprise attack could work. Who has got the
:20:23. > :20:27.legs? Has anybody got the legs to do it?
:20:28. > :20:33.Martyn Irvine is not getting any closer. Use not giving up -- he is
:20:34. > :20:53.not giving up. I think he is going to bridge that
:20:54. > :20:57.gap. They have used up at the same time and the things are going to
:20:58. > :21:03.conspire. He is going to do it, Martyn Irvine, he is going to get on
:21:04. > :21:11.the back. We give him a gold medal for effort whatever happens now.
:21:12. > :21:15.That was a fantastic effort. Now on terms on the same lap. He has seven
:21:16. > :21:26.laps to recover if he wants to sprint it out. Cheung is riding on
:21:27. > :21:32.the front. Cheung and Kovalev are one lap ahead of everyone. That was
:21:33. > :21:36.not a good move by Cheung at all. He needs to look at Kovalev who has
:21:37. > :21:44.also had a chance to recover. He has put in a big effort. Only five laps
:21:45. > :21:50.to go. When the acceleration went, there was a gap to Martin Irvine. He
:21:51. > :21:58.could not hold the wheels. He is definitely trying to recover. I
:21:59. > :22:11.think it will come down to a splint -- sprint. We will need to watch
:22:12. > :22:16.them to see what order they finished because that is what will define the
:22:17. > :22:24.World Championship. It is so tightly packed. Martyn Irvine is hanging on
:22:25. > :22:26.by his fingernails at the back. Less than three laps to go, two laps to
:22:27. > :22:35.go at the end of this race. Kovalev has got himself in a great
:22:36. > :22:40.position with just two laps remaining. I don't think Cheung can
:22:41. > :22:47.get back on terms. He has been distanced. Kovalev is in the
:22:48. > :22:56.position to go for the gold medal. Aragorn has overtaken Cheung.
:22:57. > :23:00.Kovalev from Russia is in a brilliant position. At the sprint
:23:01. > :23:08.winds itself up... He has nearly been brought down. He did so well
:23:09. > :23:17.stay on his bike there. Martin Irving crosses the line, and I think
:23:18. > :23:21.the order... Kovalev, the Russian writer, nearly had it snatched away
:23:22. > :23:26.from him on the final banking in the midst of the hurly-burly of the
:23:27. > :23:35.sprint, he was almost brought crashing down to the boards. The
:23:36. > :23:49.first over the line was a lap behind. Terror-mac will claim the
:23:50. > :23:56.gold. -- Kovalev. What a gargantuan effort from Martyn Irvine. He did so
:23:57. > :24:03.much chasing and Cheung will claim the bronze.
:24:04. > :24:11.Made Cheung -- Cheung made a big mistake. It played into the hands
:24:12. > :24:29.of, -- of Kovalev. It was a gutsy ride by Martin
:24:30. > :24:35.Irving. He fought so hard to get back on terms.
:24:36. > :24:41.You had to work hard for that. Yes, it is really unhealthy, I would not
:24:42. > :24:43.recommend that to anybody. it is really unhealthy, I would not
:24:44. > :24:50.recommend that to It seems to be the way that I do it. I will keep doing
:24:51. > :24:56.it, it works. Know you are a marked man out there, everyone is looking
:24:57. > :25:00.out to see what you're doing. Yes, everybody thinks, he will be a good
:25:01. > :25:04.lead to follow. When it is laid on the line, near the end of the race,
:25:05. > :25:11.everybody is busting it, that is when I kind of creep over the rest
:25:12. > :25:18.of them, so I just suffer for it, that is what I have to do. I was
:25:19. > :25:21.wrecked by the time I got on, and the Russian just held on. Another
:25:22. > :25:29.few laps, we could have gone for the win. After the pursuit this morning,
:25:30. > :25:34.I'm not complaining. That rescued my weekend. It could be a big night for
:25:35. > :25:40.Ireland, obviously you were flying the flag last year but you've got a
:25:41. > :25:45.new young team. What you make of them? This chap here behind me is
:25:46. > :25:51.going to put me to shame. Good talent, big engine, sensible head on
:25:52. > :25:57.him. It looks good for the Irish team, more people coming on, it
:25:58. > :26:02.shows you the fun that we get, it has increased, the last two years.
:26:03. > :26:09.It is good to see some talent coming through from Ireland. It is great.
:26:10. > :26:16.Martin Irving is quite a character. There is no poker face from him. He
:26:17. > :26:23.likes to wear his heart on his sleeve and he is a fantastic rider.
:26:24. > :26:33.He has become peoples favourite rider. Immense talent. Let us have a
:26:34. > :26:37.look at what we have seen from the British team. We expected better in
:26:38. > :26:43.the team pursuit and the team sprint. I'm sure they did as well
:26:44. > :26:50.top you can look at it two ways, it is not that important. Maybe they
:26:51. > :26:56.are trying new things. The girls have definitely done better than the
:26:57. > :27:00.boys. There are still along way away. Dave Brailsford will be
:27:01. > :27:08.watching this. I remember before London, the team at the same feeling
:27:09. > :27:16.at that point in time. Naturally, you start to panic. Hopefully, they
:27:17. > :27:23.know what they're doing. Dave will have his plans, I'm sure with some
:27:24. > :27:30.degree they will be on track, no pun intended. The boys definitely need
:27:31. > :27:37.to step it up, for sure. You must be delighted with Joanna Rowsell. So
:27:38. > :27:41.proud of her. Getting the timing right is so important, she lives and
:27:42. > :27:46.dies for team pursuit, I cannot wait to give her a big heart when she
:27:47. > :27:49.gets home. Thank you, guys. We will be back tomorrow but first you can
:27:50. > :27:57.follow the coverage on the red button, tonight until 3:25am. We
:27:58. > :28:00.will be back on BBC Two tomorrow at 4pm with more highlights including
:28:01. > :28:07.two world champions defending their world champion titles. All the

:28:15. > :28:19.from the British team but we have a new queen of the track, you are
:28:20. > :28:22.smiling about it. Joanna Rowsell, double gold. See you tomorrow. 4pm.
