:00:13. > :00:18.Yes, she has done it. Nicky James, double world champion. Towards the

:00:19. > :00:30.line, it is Jason Kenny, the world champion. -- Becky James. Great

:00:31. > :00:50.Britain or the world champions again. Good afternoon. Welcome back

:00:51. > :00:53.to coverage of the track cycling World Championships from Colombia.

:00:54. > :00:58.We already have a double world champion in the shape of Joanna

:00:59. > :01:03.Rowsell. She is the perceived queen. My guess, Dame Sarah Storey

:01:04. > :01:08.and Jamie Staff. You were delighted with Juana's performance. Yes, it

:01:09. > :01:13.has been fantastic to see her win her first individual world title.

:01:14. > :01:24.Sarah Hammer, an amazing scalp for Joanna Rowsell. She has a huge smile

:01:25. > :01:33.on her face. I bet there have been a few texts. Yes, she is over the

:01:34. > :01:37.moon. A more dispassionate evaluation? Yes, to win an event,

:01:38. > :01:42.and then get your brain around, yes, I have got to compete again

:01:43. > :01:46.tomorrow, there is a bit of an anti-climax. But she got her head on

:01:47. > :01:50.her shoulders and she went out and performed again. This is what is

:01:51. > :01:59.coming up over the next hour and a half. If Daley Thompson had been a

:02:00. > :02:03.cyclist, this would have been his event. Ed Clancy goes through Great

:02:04. > :02:08.Britain in the multidiscipline omniums. 12 months ago, Rebecca

:02:09. > :02:14.James was having the championships of her life. We will watch try and

:02:15. > :02:18.defend her title. Another cyclist with a rainbow jersey from one year

:02:19. > :02:27.ago was Jason Kenny. He will go in the keirin. First, it is the men's

:02:28. > :02:28.omnium. Three bunch events, and the time trials. Ed Clancy in the flying

:02:29. > :02:32.lap first of all. omnium. Three bunch events, and the

:02:33. > :02:36.time trials. Ed Clancy in the It was the perfect opening for Ed Clancy,

:02:37. > :02:49.ending him one point for the victory. -- earning. The rider with

:02:50. > :02:55.the least points from the six events wins. Next up, it was the points

:02:56. > :03:00.event. Not such a happy tale for Ed Clancy, finishing in 13th place. He

:03:01. > :03:10.only scored in two of the 12 spreads. That said, his strength is

:03:11. > :03:17.very much in the time trials. It is the early stages, but this is the

:03:18. > :03:23.standings. Ed Clancy is in fifth place. The final event of Day one

:03:24. > :03:31.was the elimination race. Simon Brotherton and Chris Boardman are

:03:32. > :03:43.the commentators. If other lap, a rider will be taken out. -- every

:03:44. > :03:52.other. They are going at it straightaway. Every other lap, the

:03:53. > :04:00.last rider over the line is out. This is a frantic event. Ed Clancy

:04:01. > :04:04.in the middle of the pack. It is easy to get boxed in. This is an

:04:05. > :04:28.elimination lap. It is the Italian rider who is going

:04:29. > :04:31.to go. He is out. You can see that the riders have a box on their

:04:32. > :04:36.handlebars and the flashing light. They know when they are out of the

:04:37. > :04:37.race. It is fast and furious and we're already on the next

:04:38. > :05:04.elimination. It may well be Luke Davison from

:05:05. > :05:13.Australia. Yes, he is out. Ed Clancy is into third place. You can see how

:05:14. > :05:15.hard it is to go around the outside. Luke Davison has had a nightmare in

:05:16. > :05:29.this race. It is the rider from Mexico and the

:05:30. > :05:35.back. He is owed. Number 24, from Mexico. He is the former

:05:36. > :05:40.Pan-American games champion on both the road and the track. This is a

:05:41. > :05:55.real tough race for the connoisseurs. -- commisaires. The

:05:56. > :06:00.Danish rider is making a move around the outside of the track. Ed Clancy

:06:01. > :06:05.is slap bang in the middle of the peloton.

:06:06. > :06:10.The race was interrupted shortly after that with the dramatic crash.

:06:11. > :06:16.As you can see, there really was carnage. It took out half of the

:06:17. > :06:24.field. Swiss rider Olivier Beer was the first to fall and then it was a

:06:25. > :06:28.case of dominoes. It is tough to avoid those. Fortunately, Ed Clancy

:06:29. > :06:32.was not involved and he circled the track while the officials strive to

:06:33. > :06:39.get the race by contract. They did that successfully. The starter has

:06:40. > :06:46.got his gun out. We are underway again. -- to get the race back on

:06:47. > :07:18.track. Casper Von Folsach is at the back.

:07:19. > :07:22.He has been made a lot. This time, he is not going to make it. Casper

:07:23. > :07:51.Von Folsach has gone. Ed Clancy is OK, but he did not have

:07:52. > :07:58.much room for manoeuvre. It will be the American rider who goes, Jacob

:07:59. > :08:04.Duehring. Ed Clancy was the penultimate rider over the line. He

:08:05. > :08:05.was stuck on the inside. It is in the lap of the gods when you're down

:08:06. > :08:25.there. Ed Clancy is going to be fine. The

:08:26. > :08:32.rider to go is number 30. It is Olivier Beer from Switzerland. He

:08:33. > :08:34.was first own in the crash before. I cannot say that he caused it, but he

:08:35. > :08:58.was definitely first down. The rider from the Netherlands has

:08:59. > :09:06.done it again. It looks like the rider from Belarus who will go.

:09:07. > :09:11.Negative, it is the rider from the Czech Republic. They are really

:09:12. > :09:35.strung out, because of the speed. Ed Clancy may well have gone. I do

:09:36. > :09:40.not know. It is going to be close. I think he has gone. Let's look for

:09:41. > :09:51.confirmation. It was very close, hardly anything in it. No, it was

:09:52. > :09:57.the rider from the Ukraine. Ed Clancy thinks that he is out. He has

:09:58. > :10:02.blown it. He thought he was out and he gave up before he got the

:10:03. > :10:08.flashing light. That has cost him. That is an unfortunate error. A man

:10:09. > :10:14.of his experience, you think he would wait for the flashing light.

:10:15. > :10:19.That is an error by him. He was looking for defeat rather than

:10:20. > :10:25.victory. That is disappointing. Ed Clancy clearly should have waited

:10:26. > :10:30.for the light to come on. That could see him out of this competition

:10:31. > :10:39.overall. He is strong in the timed events, but struggles in the

:10:40. > :10:43.distance. Surely that was the Dutch man. Finally, he has been caught

:10:44. > :11:21.out, Tim Veldt. Was it the Colombian rider? I think

:11:22. > :11:27.so. No, they have given it to the Belgian rider. I am not sure how

:11:28. > :11:35.they managed that. It will be because he rode off the track, onto

:11:36. > :11:41.the blue. The Belgian is refusing to come out of the race at the moment.

:11:42. > :11:48.That is not his choice. They will neutralise the race until he does,

:11:49. > :11:52.it. The Colombian rider has sat up. The Belgian is still complaining.

:11:53. > :11:57.The officials are not about to change their mind. The Colombian

:11:58. > :12:04.actually took himself out of the race. You cannot have this dispute

:12:05. > :12:10.with the officials. They are not going to change their mind because

:12:11. > :12:17.you are shaking your finger at them. He is being ordered from the track.

:12:18. > :12:23.We are down to the last five. Aaron Gate, the defending world champion,

:12:24. > :12:26.on the front. The Colombian rider took himself out. It is getting

:12:27. > :12:49.quite nasty in the middle. That was a tight one. Possibly

:12:50. > :12:57.between the French rider and the rider from Belarus. It is the rider

:12:58. > :13:03.from Belarus who has gone. Belgium are still going mad.

:13:04. > :13:16.It did look like an unfair decision to me.

:13:17. > :13:30.The Japanese rider has given way. We have not really mentioned the

:13:31. > :13:40.Russian rider. He is hanging in at the back end. Viktor Manakov. One

:13:41. > :13:58.more rider to come out before they can test the finish. Viktor Manakov

:13:59. > :14:07.is the one to go. Three points for Viktor Manakov. He did well there.

:14:08. > :14:12.He was on the seat of his pants when half the field came down in the back

:14:13. > :14:20.straight. Head-to-head, between the world champion of New Zealand and

:14:21. > :14:25.Thomas Boudat in France. The French man has got the legs beat. There is

:14:26. > :14:42.no response. Thomas Boudat takes the victory. This was one that he would

:14:43. > :14:46.have expected to do well in but he finished in 11th place with a pretty

:14:47. > :14:59.slow time. This appointment for Ed Clancy. Needed to bounce back in the

:15:00. > :15:04.scratch race over 15 kilometres. He took it out. That was a great

:15:05. > :15:08.performance from Clancy. With one final event, he needed a strong

:15:09. > :15:13.performance and others to falter if he was to get a medal. The final

:15:14. > :15:25.event of the Omnium. Clancy has such a great engine. He

:15:26. > :15:29.has posted times that would have seen him potentially medal before

:15:30. > :15:33.now. We expect big things from him here. Four laps to go and look at

:15:34. > :15:37.the effort being made their by Ed Clancy.

:15:38. > :15:47.There he is now, halfway through the first lap.

:15:48. > :15:59.The first lap, Ed Clancy is the fastest.

:16:00. > :16:07.Can you finish this Omnium in style? Still leading the way.

:16:08. > :16:21.Nearly a second quicker. Take the Bell.

:16:22. > :16:31.What has he got left? He is going to get it out of himself, straining

:16:32. > :16:37.every sinew. Ed Clancy's time, that is world-class from Ed Clancy. It

:16:38. > :16:41.really is quite something, to be able to do that after two days of

:16:42. > :16:48.competition, and of course, the team pursuit as well. He is more of a

:16:49. > :16:56.sprinter than an injury and is rider, that is why he has the job of

:16:57. > :17:02.getting it underway. He has done faster tonight.

:17:03. > :17:21.Ed Clancy leads the way. Second at the moment, the Colombian. We will

:17:22. > :17:28.have to see what happens behind him. It will be difficult because there

:17:29. > :17:39.are a lot of classy riders. It is always possible. How frustrating to

:17:40. > :17:45.potentially win three events out of six and not get on the podium, if

:17:46. > :17:47.that is what happens. I think that is what will happen, but it shows

:17:48. > :18:00.how important consistency is. He may come to regret sitting up in

:18:01. > :18:05.the elimination race before his handlebars started flashing. He

:18:06. > :18:10.thought he was out but he was pretty much spent at that point anyway.

:18:11. > :18:18.Maybe he thought the battery had broken in his handlebars.

:18:19. > :18:46.Gate, who won this title a year ago. Veldt from the Netherlands.

:18:47. > :18:57.Gate is a winner of four national titles last year. Veldt is the

:18:58. > :19:02.biggest challenge for Ed Clancy at this part of the competition. Gate

:19:03. > :19:12.has been very consistent throughout. Not much in it.

:19:13. > :19:18.They are going quick, actually. Second and third fastest, the pair

:19:19. > :19:32.of them. We could see some good times here.

:19:33. > :19:34.This is a great ride for Gate. Final lap, Veldt is still second fastest

:19:35. > :19:49.behind Ed Clancy. Good enough for second place, and

:19:50. > :19:54.Gate just fades slightly to go forth. Good ride for Gate. That is

:19:55. > :20:07.what he has been throughout this event. Very consistent. He is

:20:08. > :20:14.challenging for a podium spot. He needed better than that because he

:20:15. > :20:18.is chasing Veldt. I don't think he will get himself onto the podium.

:20:19. > :20:35.The last two riders coming up onto the track now. Boudat is in the

:20:36. > :20:40.gold-medal position. Manakov is behind him on 25. These are in

:20:41. > :20:47.during traders so I would not expect them to challenge for the win but

:20:48. > :21:02.they will need to post respectable times. -- in Georgia's riders. --

:21:03. > :21:09.endurance. Gate is trying to get himself on the podium but the Dutch

:21:10. > :21:10.rider tried to move himself up into silver position. He may well do

:21:11. > :21:21.that, it is all down to this man. Potentially four laps from a gold

:21:22. > :21:28.medal, the French man. Still need to put in a good rate.

:21:29. > :21:47.He has taken a couple of wins. Can afford to drop a couple of places

:21:48. > :21:55.but this is looking very respectable year. Fourth place after lap one.

:21:56. > :22:02.Manakov is in trouble, 11th at the moment. Coming up to the halfway

:22:03. > :22:03.mark. Boudat good enough for fourth still, but Manakov is down in ninth.

:22:04. > :22:13.He has work to do. Boudat dropping slightly down to

:22:14. > :22:29.fifth. Manakov is in eighth. The Omnium officially draws to a

:22:30. > :22:34.close. Boudat did so well. He relieved pulled it out of the bag.

:22:35. > :22:41.Good enough for third place in the final event, and Boudat is your

:22:42. > :22:54.world champion. Very strong finish, wasn't it. Boudat takes the

:22:55. > :23:05.gold-medal 24 points. Veldt is lifted up to second, Manakov is

:23:06. > :23:11.third. Ed Clancy is in fifth but he won three of the six races. It might

:23:12. > :23:15.all come down to that error in the elimination race. Free Morand he

:23:16. > :23:18.would have been in the bronze medal position. I don't think he could

:23:19. > :23:28.challenge for the win here. There is the official confirmation. Boudat is

:23:29. > :23:33.the world champion, Veldt in the silver medal position. Just outside

:23:34. > :23:37.the medals. Tickets through the last couple of days. He had some really

:23:38. > :23:42.great performances. I think there were a couple of races, the

:23:43. > :23:46.Individual Pursuit and the Points Race where you did not get what you

:23:47. > :23:51.wanted. Truth be told, this week has been a bit of a nightmare. Team

:23:52. > :24:02.pursuit, started off there. As you can see, track racing is all about

:24:03. > :24:08.timing, and we did not get it right this time. It is the same line-up

:24:09. > :24:12.that won the Europeans, the Manchester World Cup... Everything

:24:13. > :24:18.has not worked out this last couple of weeks. Fifth place in Omnium with

:24:19. > :24:23.the form I had is the best I could have hoped for. The scratch race, I

:24:24. > :24:29.was looking at it as a soft race, and the sprint, it came down to

:24:30. > :24:35.that. The Flying Lap, we still have good speed, but we don't have, we

:24:36. > :24:43.are not tolerating the pursuit efforts at the moment. Points in the

:24:44. > :24:47.scratch and elimination were not that bad, it was the pursuit lost

:24:48. > :24:52.ground. Back to the drawing board. We will try and sort it out next

:24:53. > :24:56.year. It is a long time since I have been to a World Championships and

:24:57. > :25:07.never seen a British male medal. Why have the team not been able to

:25:08. > :25:12.deliver? I cannot. We look back, we look at what we have done before, we

:25:13. > :25:19.did try different things, you have two. -- you need to try different

:25:20. > :25:27.things. It has been a busy season, lots happening, we tried a different

:25:28. > :25:37.approach to training. Until quite recently we were doing well. This

:25:38. > :25:41.campaign has not been bad. We have had great performances, just not

:25:42. > :25:47.this week. Fascinating interview with Ed Clancy. Is it back to the

:25:48. > :25:51.drawing board? This guy has two gold medals in the Olympics, he is

:25:52. > :25:56.talking about the drawing board. You have British Cycling, with this

:25:57. > :25:59.amazing reputation, and he looks a bit confused. He said it there, they

:26:00. > :26:04.have a different approach this winter, they try new things, they

:26:05. > :26:12.have a different line-up, with Ed Clancy being one of the surviving

:26:13. > :26:14.cyclists from London. It is about looking at where they did not do

:26:15. > :26:19.their injury and straining. They want to make -- where they did not

:26:20. > :26:24.do their training. They need to carry themselves through difficult

:26:25. > :26:28.weeks like this. For Ed Clancy, coming off the team pursuit, going

:26:29. > :26:34.through that Omnium... How can you treat it so much when you're part of

:26:35. > :26:41.a team that broke the world record in London, they know how to do this?

:26:42. > :26:46.It has gone badly wrong here. It is obviously having a huge effect on

:26:47. > :26:51.the outcome, whether it is purely timing or their training plan is not

:26:52. > :27:00.up to scratch, obviously they will go back to the drawing board. I'm

:27:01. > :27:04.sure that Dave and Shane are not panicking, they know they have the

:27:05. > :27:06.athletes that can do it, and sometimes you just have to

:27:07. > :27:14.experiment and sometimes you will get it wrong. How much is this

:27:15. > :27:22.mental? You look at his performance in the Omnium, he has won three of

:27:23. > :27:27.the events, they were brilliant. But then for him, the Individual Pursuit

:27:28. > :27:31.was appalling. I think he explained it quite well because the tolerance

:27:32. > :27:36.you need for an Individual Pursuit is huge. You need to be able to

:27:37. > :27:41.tolerate that huge strain you're putting your body through. You need

:27:42. > :27:47.to deal to get through all six. He knows his speed is very quick. He

:27:48. > :27:51.usually has the length to his efforts. Is that length of effort --

:27:52. > :27:54.it is that length of effort that he is struggling with. You can look at

:27:55. > :28:00.the mistake he made in the elimination but ultimately he did

:28:01. > :28:05.not have that length of effort. Talking about the changing of the

:28:06. > :28:10.guards, we've topped about that in respect Jason Kenny, we will hear

:28:11. > :28:17.from Sir Chris Hoy, use out there as an ambassador. Ed Clancy is now one

:28:18. > :28:22.of the senior, which he is maybe not used to. Is that having an effect?

:28:23. > :28:25.He's definitely maturing. He obviously knows what is going on

:28:26. > :28:29.back at home in the camp and is well aware of the training and

:28:30. > :28:33.everything, I think he's up to it, he's a good character, you could be

:28:34. > :28:37.a good team leader. A couple of years away from the Olympics, always

:28:38. > :28:40.the main goal. U2 have competed here. We will talk with that in

:28:41. > :28:59.moment. -- you two. On a clear day, this gives

:29:00. > :29:05.spectacular views over ten Mac. -- Cali. It is recognised as

:29:06. > :29:13.Columbia's city of sport, but more significantly, it is the world

:29:14. > :29:19.capital of salsa. The Colombians are passionate about sport and they

:29:20. > :29:24.definitely love their cycling. Cycling has been popular since the

:29:25. > :29:39.early 1940s. It has become very popular. Cali, the track is the best

:29:40. > :29:43.in Latin America. We have people that know about cycling on the

:29:44. > :29:51.track. We want a gold medal for the Colombian team. But for us, all

:29:52. > :29:56.riders are the same. What does it mean to Cali to hold the World

:29:57. > :29:59.Championships? For the country, we feel very proud to have the best

:30:00. > :30:08.cyclists in the world competing in Colombia. The locals are clearly

:30:09. > :30:13.proud to be hosting these World Championships, while the riders are

:30:14. > :30:18.welcoming the whole experience. I really like Cali, I have fond

:30:19. > :30:24.memories. I have only been once, but it was special. The atmosphere is

:30:25. > :30:28.incredible. It is a bit odd having no sides on, because you can have a

:30:29. > :30:35.head wind down one straight and a tail wind down the other, which is a

:30:36. > :30:37.bit weird, but I like the track. When you go into the velodrome, it

:30:38. > :30:42.takes your breath away, because you can see the mountains in the

:30:43. > :30:47.background. The scenery is fantastic and the Colombians love cycling.

:30:48. > :30:56.They love the atmosphere and they get into the racing. It is a party

:30:57. > :31:03.atmosphere. A nation passionate about cycling, and they went mad in

:31:04. > :31:08.the men's points race. The 2011 world champion taking the world

:31:09. > :31:14.title. He did it by gaining three laps. He was constantly on the

:31:15. > :31:23.attack. He beat Tom Scully of New Zealand. The front page of the big

:31:24. > :31:34.newspaper in Cali. You can see, he is the man. It was an outstanding

:31:35. > :31:40.performance from Edwin. What are your memories of Cali and what it is

:31:41. > :31:44.like as a country? Colourful, scary at times. You have just got to be

:31:45. > :31:49.aware, like a lot of places you're not familiar with. You have got to

:31:50. > :31:55.be smart, do not carry around tonnes of cash or go out late at night. But

:31:56. > :32:01.I loved it. The atmosphere that the track was awesome. When you are an

:32:02. > :32:06.athlete competing on a track with that atmosphere, it adds to your

:32:07. > :32:11.performance. I am sure that everyone will be enjoying the racing. And

:32:12. > :32:16.they are dancing in the stands as well, especially when there are

:32:17. > :32:20.Colombians winning. It is like a Colombian salsa through the stadium.

:32:21. > :32:26.We're going to turn attention to the women's sprint. Becky James has

:32:27. > :32:30.already matched the bronze medal she got in the team sprint, but she did

:32:31. > :32:36.not manage to do it in the 500 metres time trial.

:32:37. > :32:47.She struggled, she was down in seventh place. She got a bronze

:32:48. > :32:53.medal in Belarus. In the individual sprint, she was the defending

:32:54. > :32:58.champion in this one. At the quarterfinal stage, her team-mate,

:32:59. > :33:12.Jess Varnish, she became the adversary.

:33:13. > :33:20.Becky James should be the quicker of the two. But Jess Varnish is really

:33:21. > :33:29.sprinting well after her injuries last year. She has had a lot of back

:33:30. > :33:38.trouble, Jess Varnish. It is great to see her back out on the track,

:33:39. > :33:48.and riding strongly. Becky James, water championship she had 12 months

:33:49. > :33:51.ago in Belarus. She was the first British rider to win medals in four

:33:52. > :34:00.events at the same World Championships. Two gold medals and

:34:01. > :34:03.two bronze medals. They have to continue, at least at walking pace.

:34:04. > :34:12.You can see the official at the bottom. They have to do that until

:34:13. > :34:30.they have completed the first half lap. Farne is still the rider at the

:34:31. > :34:50.front. -- Jess Varnish. Becky James is happy to bite her time. -- bide

:34:51. > :34:59.her time. The longer it goes on, the more the tension builds. Now they

:35:00. > :35:03.have passed the half lap marker, they can stand still if they wish,

:35:04. > :35:08.to force their opponent to come through, but it cannot be for longer

:35:09. > :35:39.than 30 seconds. Otherwise the race will be restarted.

:35:40. > :35:46.Jess Varnish closing the gap, and pipping her on the line. Jess

:35:47. > :35:56.Varnish had a lot of work to do during the last lap. She managed to

:35:57. > :35:59.close the gap and roll level. She nudged her front wheel in front of

:36:00. > :36:05.Becky James as they approached the line. A very strong acceleration.

:36:06. > :36:09.She stayed in the slipstream writing to the last rate. The long straight

:36:10. > :36:17.is really changing the tactics for the event. There is a real advantage

:36:18. > :36:22.to be at the back. We have got quite a race in this all British

:36:23. > :36:27.quarterfinal. Jess Varnish with the advantage, having won the first

:36:28. > :36:35.race. The defending champion, Becky James, has to win this. That must

:36:36. > :36:40.have come as a real surprise. Jessica Varnish had to come back

:36:41. > :36:48.through the repechage early today. I thought that Becky James was the

:36:49. > :36:53.favourite. But that late acceleration really took us by

:36:54. > :37:00.surprise. A psychological test for Becky James, as well as a physical

:37:01. > :37:06.one. There is no room for error. There is a gentle breeze swirling

:37:07. > :37:11.around the track in Cali. What a race this could be. There will be a

:37:12. > :37:28.British rider in the semifinals, but which way will it go?

:37:29. > :37:36.There is a firecracker being set off. We thought that was the starter

:37:37. > :37:38.pistol. Everyone is looking around, but I think you're right. It was

:37:39. > :37:46.something in the stand. Let's hope it is a firecracker!

:37:47. > :37:59.track, the tension is building. They have completed half a lap, so a

:38:00. > :38:02.standstill as possible, as long as it does not last more than 30

:38:03. > :38:09.seconds. Sure enough, it is Becky James that is trying to force

:38:10. > :38:14.Jessica Varnish to come through. She does not want to have to lead this

:38:15. > :38:20.one out. Sliding down to the bottom of the track, Jess Varnish. She is

:38:21. > :38:28.smiling. She just overlapped the wheel. They were so close. That is

:38:29. > :38:34.not exactly what Becky James wanted, but because she was so close to her,

:38:35. > :38:39.she thought, if I stole it now, she will have to come past me. But Jess

:38:40. > :38:44.Varnish was not interested. That was the end result. I think they will

:38:45. > :38:51.consider that a mishap and there will be a restart. There was

:38:52. > :39:05.certainly no intent involved. Becky James was still moving slightly at

:39:06. > :39:20.the time. They are just having a chat as Jess Varnish wanders back

:39:21. > :39:27.towards the start line. I am just reading one of the rules just now.

:39:28. > :39:32.That may be deemed that it was caused by a competitor riding too

:39:33. > :39:38.slowly in a curve. Then that person will be deemed to be at fault. They

:39:39. > :39:42.will have to take the lead. I am not sure that they were in the band. I

:39:43. > :39:48.think that is referring to when riders go too slowly and slide down.

:39:49. > :39:55.I think they will ride again. That is what is going to happen now. I do

:39:56. > :40:03.not know whether you heard that, Jessica Varnish will take the

:40:04. > :40:08.opening position on the first lap. Becky James is the one with the

:40:09. > :40:26.union flag on her crash helmet. The white stripe is Jessica Varnish.

:40:27. > :40:41.Here we go. At the second time of asking. A little reminder that it is

:40:42. > :40:45.Jess Varnish has the advantage. Becky James has to win this match or

:40:46. > :40:56.her chance of retaining the world title will be gone. James is in the

:40:57. > :41:01.better tactical position. Jess Varnish is giving her space, that is

:41:02. > :41:06.what she did not do before. She has left yourself room to manoeuvre.

:41:07. > :41:12.Well, she had room to manoeuvre, but she has used it up. Both of these

:41:13. > :41:21.riders are capable of doing a track stand for some time. They are only

:41:22. > :41:24.allowed to do that for 30 seconds. The gun will be fired and the race

:41:25. > :41:43.will be restarted. It is still Varnish at the front. When they come

:41:44. > :41:47.into the straits, the riders come to the top of the track, because they

:41:48. > :41:57.want the hype, to be able to accelerate down. -- the height. The

:41:58. > :42:09.downside of that is that it is easy to be taken by surprise if the rear

:42:10. > :42:14.competitor drops down quickly. Becky James is in the position that she

:42:15. > :42:25.wants to be. This could prove tactically important. They have 1.5

:42:26. > :42:31.laps to go. They are still going very slowly. They have to be

:42:32. > :42:35.careful. Surprise can be a big element if you leave it till late in

:42:36. > :42:42.the race. They have normally started to wind up by this point. It will be

:42:43. > :42:46.very explosive. I think that Jess Varnish might have the edge from an

:42:47. > :42:49.acceleration, if this comes down to a drag race to the finish. She will

:42:50. > :43:22.be happy to keep it slow. Jess Varnish wins, 2-0. Brilliant

:43:23. > :43:27.sprinting from her. The champion has lost her crime, because Becky James

:43:28. > :43:36.will not go through. 2-0 in the best-of-3/4-final. -- lost her

:43:37. > :43:43.crown. It is such a shame that one of the British riders has to go out

:43:44. > :43:48.at this stage. Jess Varnish was brilliant. She never gave up that

:43:49. > :43:52.inside position. Becky James had to come the long way around for over

:43:53. > :44:01.one lap of racing. They are so evenly matched. She finished fifth

:44:02. > :44:04.place overall. Jess Varnish marched on, she ended up in a battle for the

:44:05. > :44:18.bronze medal having lost in the semifinals. Jess Varnish, who

:44:19. > :44:21.already has a bronze medal, racing alongside Becky James, has an

:44:22. > :44:24.opportunity to win another medal at these World Championships. Best of

:44:25. > :44:34.breed. The first race. these World Championships. Best of

:44:35. > :44:54.breed. This is for bronze. Varnish leading on the opening lap.

:44:55. > :45:06.A reminder, three laps of the track.

:45:07. > :45:16.Past that first-half lap, Varnish seeing if she can force her opponent

:45:17. > :45:33.to come to the front. 100% concentration here. Aware of

:45:34. > :45:52.any sudden movement. The slower they are, the more the

:45:53. > :45:58.tension builds. Just completing the first lap now.

:45:59. > :46:09.Varnish leading from the front. Not often we see anybody trying to take

:46:10. > :46:10.a long one, but always possible. Every now and again, somebody does

:46:11. > :46:29.it and gets away with it. They take the bell. Sprint has not

:46:30. > :46:35.opened up. Temporary would like it to start late. She would like to be

:46:36. > :46:46.as as possible. Round the banking, in towards the finishing straight,

:46:47. > :46:52.Lin draws past Varnish. She leads in this best race. We could see that

:46:53. > :46:57.was going to happen. Already started to ease up. I don't know what

:46:58. > :46:59.Varnish could have done there. Riding from the front doesn't seem

:47:00. > :47:37.to work on this track. First race in the gold-medal match

:47:38. > :47:43.up. It is Tianshi against Vogel. I wonder how close this final will be.

:47:44. > :47:53.So far, Vogel has looked the pick of the field. We have seen a lot of

:47:54. > :47:56.close racing but in this instance, Vogel had definitely been the

:47:57. > :47:58.strongest rider in this competition. The only one to win from the front

:47:59. > :48:05.consistently as well. Hard to see how she's going to lose

:48:06. > :48:26.this one. 1.5 laps to go. The speed is

:48:27. > :48:30.building. Vogel is taking the height. Trying to force her

:48:31. > :48:36.opponent. And then Vogel slips on the inside. That was a surprise

:48:37. > :48:43.move. She has decided to take this from the front. Kristina Vogel is.

:48:44. > :48:47.Confidence here. Zhong Tianshi is trying to come back, can she take

:48:48. > :48:54.advantage of this particular position? She cannot. Vogel is too

:48:55. > :49:00.fast. She reads 1-0 in this final. She totally took control of that

:49:01. > :49:04.one. The only rider to be winning from the frontier because physically

:49:05. > :49:09.there is quite a gap between her and the rest of the field. The

:49:10. > :49:19.confidence to take it on and dictate the race. That big acceleration,

:49:20. > :49:21.there was no chance to get on terms. Kristina Vogel is one win away from

:49:22. > :49:46.the gold medal. This is a potentially decisive ride

:49:47. > :49:50.in the race for bronze because Lin Junhong is one up on Jess Varnish.

:49:51. > :49:56.She needs to get the victory otherwise the bronze goes to China.

:49:57. > :49:59.She needs to break the trend of competition that far. I was

:50:00. > :50:10.surprised she was bested in the last round.

:50:11. > :50:20.She was beaten in straight rights but it was a very close-run thing.

:50:21. > :50:32.-- rides. In the second race she was beaten by the width of attire.

:50:33. > :50:35.Looking to win a world Championship medal for the second time in her

:50:36. > :50:42.career, the Chinese rider. Jess Varnish is looking for the

:50:43. > :51:01.second medal of the week. Lin Junhong needs to have a head on

:51:02. > :51:03.a swivel to keep an eye on Jess Varnish year. Which of course is the

:51:04. > :51:13.idea. Jess Varnish has got to go for it

:51:14. > :51:20.here. It is all or nothing. One lap to go. Can Jess Varnish keep her

:51:21. > :51:24.chances alive here? The Chinese rider leads the sprint into the back

:51:25. > :51:33.straight. The gap is closing. Can she come around the outside? Here

:51:34. > :51:40.comes Varnish, she has not quite got it. Lin Junhong takes the bronze

:51:41. > :51:55.medal for China in straight rights. -- rides.

:51:56. > :52:14.What about Zhong Tianshi, can she take the race to Kristina Vogel?

:52:15. > :52:19.Kristina Vogel is one victory away from the world title. Silver last

:52:20. > :52:31.year. Will she be on the top of the podium this evening?

:52:32. > :52:39.Race number two in the world sprint final. Kristina Vogel leading

:52:40. > :52:48.followed by Zhong Tianshi. Vogel the clear favourite. Can

:52:49. > :53:00.Tianshi upset the odds here? I think she's got an almost

:53:01. > :53:14.impossible task to beat Vogel. Vogel is the only rider in this

:53:15. > :53:26.competition capable of winning from any position that she chooses. Very

:53:27. > :53:27.dominant in the previous round. She walloped her opponent in straight

:53:28. > :53:37.rides. Coming to the finishing straight at

:53:38. > :53:55.the end of the first lap. Kristina Vogel trying to force the

:53:56. > :53:58.issue. She already one from the front, deciding she would like to

:53:59. > :54:22.try riding at the rear as well. It just ratchets up the tension. I

:54:23. > :54:28.would say the whole Chinese sprint scene has moved on a notch

:54:29. > :54:34.tactically as well as physically. The stopwatch has started. Neither

:54:35. > :54:38.rider is giving an inch. The crowd are appreciating the skill.

:54:39. > :54:46.Now it is back to business. Sometimes standing still used to

:54:47. > :54:51.last four minutes, ten minutes on occasions. We are done with that in

:54:52. > :54:57.this particular race because they will take the bell next time they go

:54:58. > :55:01.past us. Here we go. Vogel is one lap away from the world title unless

:55:02. > :55:03.the rider from China can do something about it. Vogel is in the

:55:04. > :55:18.lead. Can she stay there? It is going to be Vogel's title!

:55:19. > :55:23.World champion at 23, well champion in the individual sprint to go with

:55:24. > :55:25.the team sprint. Top step of the podium, she has been the class of

:55:26. > :55:28.the field throughout this competition. Kristina Vogel, world

:55:29. > :55:40.sprint champion. No medals for either Jess Varnish

:55:41. > :55:43.Becky James -- or Becky James. What did you make of the tactics for

:55:44. > :55:50.Becky James? She said they had no idea why they went for these

:55:51. > :55:53.tactics. She was not very happy. I think she should have just ignored

:55:54. > :55:58.the coach, gone on with what she was happy doing. You don't really try

:55:59. > :56:05.and bring in new tactics at the world Championship level, obviously

:56:06. > :56:09.the coaches know the opponent, so in this situation maybe they were

:56:10. > :56:12.trying to find a weakness, but when you're racing you need to be

:56:13. > :56:17.confident in what you're doing so having that, she has got to Boyce is

:56:18. > :56:22.-- two voices in her head, not a good place to be. Year ago she came

:56:23. > :56:28.in under the radar, won two golds, a couple of bronze, is there anything

:56:29. > :56:33.different coming in with expectation? When you are the hunted

:56:34. > :56:38.rider it is a different experience. It is great for her to have it. She

:56:39. > :56:42.is only 21, she will come back so much stronger having had this

:56:43. > :56:47.experience. If it is only tactics that is the problem, if her form is

:56:48. > :56:52.good, that is the main battle. Tactics can change, she can do new

:56:53. > :56:57.things, we saw Vogel winning and Becky James beat her last year, but

:56:58. > :57:02.Vogel's tactics have changed. She is pulling moves that she did not have

:57:03. > :57:05.the confidence to do last year. Becky will have that experience and

:57:06. > :57:12.be stronger for it. It is difficult to read too much into it, but you

:57:13. > :57:16.read what Becky James has said, Ed Clancy, there seems to be

:57:17. > :57:23.uncertainty in British Cycling, which is not what we have been used

:57:24. > :57:32.to. David Nott there. He was a huge inspirational figure. -- David is

:57:33. > :57:35.not there. He would do motivational talks, Raleigh and get everyone

:57:36. > :57:41.round, you would walk out of the room ready for the week. -- rally.

:57:42. > :57:46.Whether that has had an impact, I don't know. It is hard to say. It is

:57:47. > :57:52.an interesting year, there has been a lot of riders leaving. Even though

:57:53. > :57:59.Chris is out, we don't know what the effect of his role is. It is

:58:00. > :58:04.interesting. Do you think Dave Brailsford is missed? It'll be to

:58:05. > :58:08.find out from the Raiders. We have had conversations like this before,

:58:09. > :58:12.experimentation has taken place and the result has not been the outcome

:58:13. > :58:18.we hope for, but then 12 months, two years later, it is amazing. I think

:58:19. > :58:25.we need to reserve judgement and they are experimenting and we know

:58:26. > :58:36.that the experiences they have will help. She will be super fired up for

:58:37. > :58:37.the keirin. That will be on tomorrow. Jason Kenny is also there,

:58:38. > :58:49.let's hear from them. Jason Kenny is in a good spot here.

:58:50. > :58:55.Up towards the line, it is Jason Kenny, the world champion. What a

:58:56. > :58:59.ride, when it really mattered. How do you see it in relation to where

:59:00. > :59:02.you were last year? I would like to be faster but then I would always

:59:03. > :59:10.like to be going faster. Last year was pants, to be honest. Now we have

:59:11. > :59:16.had a full year of training, a good off-season, going into this one in

:59:17. > :59:21.better shape. You are very much in that role as a senior member of the

:59:22. > :59:26.team, how does that sense of responsibility sit with you? I don't

:59:27. > :59:32.feel any different. To be honest, some of the guys, I thought everyone

:59:33. > :59:35.was the same age, even though we are really not. I am five years older

:59:36. > :59:39.than some people. All of a sudden they seem really young. It is good

:59:40. > :59:44.to have people who are really angry to be here, they remind me of myself

:59:45. > :00:06.in many ways. It is quite inspiring in a way. You see how you were back

:00:07. > :00:12.then. How much would it mean to you to winning Cali? It would be good. I

:00:13. > :00:17.then. How much would it mean to you need to get on with business as

:00:18. > :00:20.usual. The World Championships, it comes round every year and you wear

:00:21. > :00:33.the jersey if you win it. It is special.

:00:34. > :00:38.I wonder how Jason Kenny will play this one. Will he try to be more

:00:39. > :00:50.assertive or lighter towards the back of the field? -- or loiter. The

:00:51. > :00:56.riders are quite evenly matched. It will come down to tactics. I cannot

:00:57. > :01:00.believe that Jason Kenny's previous raid was planned to come from that

:01:01. > :01:09.far back. He managed to get himself through. Jason Kenny, the defending

:01:10. > :01:29.champion from Great Britain is in the field. There are two Germans in

:01:30. > :01:37.the race. Let's see if they will try and do something from that position.

:01:38. > :01:43.Nothing at this stage. They are content to wait. Six laps to go. If

:01:44. > :01:49.you're wondering what the differences, Max Levy has black

:01:50. > :02:01.socks. The other rider has green socks. Francois Pervis on the front.

:02:02. > :02:08.In second place, the Pan-American games champion. Can he get a medal

:02:09. > :02:17.for the host nation? The crowd are excited about this one. Max Levy is

:02:18. > :02:25.at the back at the moment. Jason Kenny is in fifth place. We are just

:02:26. > :02:29.splitting up the Germans. Everyone is waiting while the motor Excel

:02:30. > :02:44.rates, up to its top speed of 50 kilometres per hour. -- while the

:02:45. > :02:50.motorbike accelerates. Just one lap now until the motorbike swings out.

:02:51. > :03:32.Francois Pervis. Francois Pervis takes the gold

:03:33. > :03:39.medal. It is a silver medal for Colombia. But the spectacular crash

:03:40. > :03:58.on the far side of the track. Max Levy upended and unable to finish.

:03:59. > :04:05.Francois Pervis and the word title -- adds the world title to his kilo

:04:06. > :04:08.crown. The rider from the Netherlands claimed the bronze

:04:09. > :04:10.medal. Jason Kenny was in fifth place.

:04:11. > :04:14.medal. We will reflect on that very

:04:15. > :04:22.shortly, the men's keirin. Let's move on to the individual sprint.

:04:23. > :04:27.Once again, Jason Kenny find himself up against Francois Pervis. But he

:04:28. > :04:36.only got there qualifying through the repechage.

:04:37. > :04:45.What a race this could be. It is the first matchup in this quarterfinal

:04:46. > :04:51.between Jason Kenny and Francois Pervis. Jason Kenny came through

:04:52. > :05:09.against Robert Forstemann. Slowly around the banking away to

:05:10. > :05:35.our left. Francois Pervis, the way he has

:05:36. > :05:44.ridden this week, he must feel unbeatable. Two laps remaining, just

:05:45. > :05:47.under that. Francois Pervis is limbering up, gaining height. He

:05:48. > :06:13.wants to take control of this one. Jason Kenny just did not have the

:06:14. > :06:17.legs, he did not have the speed. Francois Pervis, the man of the

:06:18. > :06:33.week, with two gold medals already, he takes a 1-0 lead. It is hard to

:06:34. > :06:36.know what he can do here. He wrote tactically very well in the previous

:06:37. > :06:48.round, but Francois Pervis, he also knew what he was doing. He had the

:06:49. > :06:55.extra engine power. But he is forced to lead out this time. Francois

:06:56. > :07:00.Pervis was just a little bit too quick for Jason Kenny in the first

:07:01. > :07:06.ride. It was as simple as that. Can Jason Kenny pull it out of the bag?

:07:07. > :07:11.Can the force a third and deciding race between the pair of them? If

:07:12. > :07:29.Francois Pervis wins this one, he is through in straight rights. --

:07:30. > :07:36.straight rides. Francois Pervis, he has an air of confidence about him.

:07:37. > :07:43.He is thinking of a medal in this match sprint. The fastest ever

:07:44. > :07:55.kilometre time trial scene at the World Championships. Yes, yesterday.

:07:56. > :08:01.It was at the end of what was an increasingly exciting kilo

:08:02. > :08:06.competition. He has decided he's going to take this one from the

:08:07. > :08:13.front. Jason Kenny has given him a lot of

:08:14. > :08:33.Jason Kenny was fighting hard all the way to the line, but he did not

:08:34. > :08:45.have enough. Francois Pervis wins in straight rights. 2-0. -- rides. That

:08:46. > :09:03.was a very, very fast sprint. It was just not quite enough.

:09:04. > :09:12.It would be nice to finish with a victory, but unfortunately I am only

:09:13. > :09:17.finishing fifth. I was fifth in the keirin, fifth in the team sprint,

:09:18. > :09:21.and fifth in the individual sprint. I think I might just be fifth in the

:09:22. > :09:26.world at the moment. It is quite disappointing. Qualifying for the

:09:27. > :09:31.sprint, your role is going to put it up against yourself with the draw,

:09:32. > :09:35.when you qualified so far down. What do you put that down to? I am not

:09:36. > :09:43.sure. I have not qualified well all year. It is very close, I am not

:09:44. > :09:55.losing a massive amount, but it is always that fraction. It can mean

:09:56. > :09:59.the difference of ten places. You set yourself up for a hard day.

:10:00. > :10:06.There are no easy races. It was a tough day. Disappointing. Buy your

:10:07. > :10:10.own standards, it has been a disappointing World Championships.

:10:11. > :10:14.We expect Great Britain to win medals and we expect you to come

:10:15. > :10:17.away with something. Is it enough to say that we are a couple of years

:10:18. > :10:23.out of the Olympics? How concerned should we be? I think that is the

:10:24. > :10:30.text the cancer, but as a rider, I want to win. In the keirin, I was a

:10:31. > :10:35.bit unfortunate, but realistically, I have not been near the victory in

:10:36. > :10:39.any of these events. We will have to work hard to try and rectify that.

:10:40. > :10:44.We need to get back to where we belong. We are looking at a

:10:45. > :10:49.situation where Great Britain might go home with no medals for male

:10:50. > :10:56.competitors. Is that something the team is worried about, it has not

:10:57. > :11:05.happened for a long time? I cannot speak for the team, it is a worry

:11:06. > :11:08.for myself. We have lost Chris and Victoria. But I think we have enough

:11:09. > :11:15.talent and quality to come through and win more medals. When you look

:11:16. > :11:17.at the table, it has been a disappointing World Championships.

:11:18. > :11:26.We still have Laura Trott in the onion, and she is looking good. The

:11:27. > :11:28.press officer for British Cycling has obviously given Jason Kenny the

:11:29. > :11:36.key messages, which he is ignoring excavation Mark let's not forget,

:11:37. > :11:41.Joanna Rowsell has two gold medals. Let's not get too depressed, but so

:11:42. > :11:44.far, it has been a tale of almost Groundhog Day, with those

:11:45. > :11:50.interviews, I am not sure, I do not know that it has gone wrong. I am

:11:51. > :11:56.trying to get my head around it, and from my own experience, I think you

:11:57. > :12:01.need the lows to get the highs. I'm not panicking, and I do not think

:12:02. > :12:06.the riders are panicking. It will give them the kick up the backside

:12:07. > :12:10.that they need. They are beatable. There is plenty of competition out

:12:11. > :12:13.there that can beat them. Hopefully they will go home and try new

:12:14. > :12:18.things. They will be able to turn it around. That is a great

:12:19. > :12:23.observation, about not panicking, because Jason Kenny, for all that he

:12:24. > :12:31.is going fifth, fifth, he was pretty relaxed. Yes, and you cannot think

:12:32. > :12:40.straight after the race, what you need to change. Those are the things

:12:41. > :12:43.that happen over the summer season. They will qualify for the World Cups

:12:44. > :12:47.and come back into the winter season. Over the next few weeks,

:12:48. > :12:52.they will be looking at the lessons they can learn. They will change the

:12:53. > :12:57.things that they did not like that happened this week. In terms of the

:12:58. > :13:03.keirin and the individual sprint, what did you see there that Jason

:13:04. > :13:08.Kenny did or did not do? The spark was not there. He did not look

:13:09. > :13:14.super-sharp like he has done in the past. His tactics in the races were

:13:15. > :13:18.pretty good. I could not fault them. At the top 1% was not there. I do

:13:19. > :13:27.not think there is a massive panic going on. I would not be panicking

:13:28. > :13:30.if I was him. There has been a big change in the qualifying for this

:13:31. > :13:41.series. The riders have to go out and get these grands prixs. All the

:13:42. > :13:47.other countries are having to do it as well, but there has been a change

:13:48. > :13:52.in the system, and that may take a bit of adjustment. One of the big

:13:53. > :13:57.changes is no more Sir Chris Hoy. He has been speaking to a reporter.

:13:58. > :14:02.A big presence for Britain this week has been Sir Chris Hoy, enjoying his

:14:03. > :14:05.first world championship since announcing his retirement from the

:14:06. > :14:11.track. What exactly has your role been this week? It has been an

:14:12. > :14:16.informal role. I have been behind the scenes, some want to do little

:14:17. > :14:22.jobs, a bit of a dogsbody, but someone to chat to the riders. I

:14:23. > :14:27.found it useful in my career to have objectives, and the views of people

:14:28. > :14:33.out with the inner circle. People who understand what it is like to

:14:34. > :14:37.compete at this level, but they are a step removed from it. You can have

:14:38. > :14:45.a sounding board. That is what I have been doing. Do you wish you

:14:46. > :14:51.were out there? When you see how fast they are going, I'm quite glad

:14:52. > :14:55.to be spectating. The standard is getting higher overtime and I'm 100%

:14:56. > :14:59.sure I got the best out of myself, and I finished at the right time.

:15:00. > :15:03.You start to appreciate what it was you had the chance of doing for so

:15:04. > :15:08.long. I watched the final from up in the stands and it was awesome. I was

:15:09. > :15:12.doing that not long ago. You feel proud you had that opportunity. I'm

:15:13. > :15:18.very happy to be spectating and not on the track. What have you made of

:15:19. > :15:24.these World Championships? It is a transition between the Olympic cycle

:15:25. > :15:29.for Great Britain. We have had some success but not as much as we have

:15:30. > :15:33.grown used to. The expectation is always high. You can make excuses

:15:34. > :15:39.reasons for not topping the medal table. Every race we get up there,

:15:40. > :15:43.we want to win. There are a few disappointed riders but there are a

:15:44. > :15:48.lot of great hopefuls, you have young riders coming into the team

:15:49. > :15:53.pursuit, men and women, the team sprint, we are going through a

:15:54. > :15:57.transitional phase. It is a difficult sport. Sport is

:15:58. > :16:00.unpredictable. We are still winning medals, you need to look back for

:16:01. > :16:06.years, before London there were questions being asked. We always

:16:07. > :16:11.manage to do it when it counts. That is not to say we don't want to win

:16:12. > :16:14.world titles, but when we get to Rio de Janiero we will hopefully be back

:16:15. > :16:24.on top. That was Chris Hoy speaking. What you think it will be

:16:25. > :16:31.like having Sir Chris Hoy out there? He is such a big character, our most

:16:32. > :16:35.successful Olympian. Could it be a positive or a negative? It could be,

:16:36. > :16:41.but I think having him there is a fantastic idea. He has all that

:16:42. > :16:45.experience, he knows what it is, doing that, he knows what is in

:16:46. > :16:51.front of him. He is able to put the arms round shoulders of riders, they

:16:52. > :16:55.will be disappointed, he can help them through it, help them be

:16:56. > :16:58.positive for the next race, going home with a positive attitude for

:16:59. > :17:05.the coming training that they've got to do. You know him really well. You

:17:06. > :17:12.won gold back in 2008. What you think he will bring to the table? A

:17:13. > :17:17.lot of experience. I'm a coach, and I really enjoy passing things onto

:17:18. > :17:20.athletes. They are struggling, dealing with highs and lows. It is

:17:21. > :17:25.the great pleasure of passing that knowledge on. There is no better

:17:26. > :17:29.guide to do it than Chris. I'm sure they will appreciate it. Interesting

:17:30. > :17:40.that he is they are when David Brailsford is not. Coincidence? --

:17:41. > :17:47.he's there. Who knows? Chris is great to have out there, and Dave

:17:48. > :17:50.has one opportunity to give the team a chance to do something without

:17:51. > :17:53.him. That is obviously something they can take away and decide

:17:54. > :18:01.whether it is the right call to make. Back in 2004, Chris Hoy was

:18:02. > :18:08.the world champion in the keirin. It was dropped from the Olympics. Here

:18:09. > :18:09.is what happened in the World Championships, where it is still

:18:10. > :18:30.involved. -- the kilo. Not much in it in the first time

:18:31. > :18:34.check. In touch is all you need to be. It is all about the final

:18:35. > :18:38.quarter. You have to be within a 10th of a second to have a chance at

:18:39. > :18:39.taking the fastest time. That is what years. Almost level pegging

:18:40. > :18:48.now. Starting to go out by a 10th of a

:18:49. > :18:53.second, losing a little bit of ground. Once the rot has started it

:18:54. > :18:59.is nearly impossible to bring it back. He is holding his own. Still

:19:00. > :19:03.over a lap to go. What has he got left in the tank? It is the fastest

:19:04. > :19:11.time at the three quarters distance. It will come back to this are flat.

:19:12. > :19:14.Remember there are only two riders to come after he crosses the line.

:19:15. > :19:23.We have a new leader X permission Mark what are -- sweet have leader!

:19:24. > :19:27.That has taken us all by surprise. What a phenomenal ride. He just did

:19:28. > :19:44.not pirate. -- get tired. The first ride below a minute. Truly

:19:45. > :19:54.fantastic. Just two riders left in this event. Simon van Velthooven is

:19:55. > :20:04.underway. I think the fastest times set at sea-level was just over a

:20:05. > :20:10.minute. That is a slow start. Is he going to wind it up? Is he going to

:20:11. > :20:15.be off the pace? It is over half a second. That is too much time to

:20:16. > :20:28.make up. He is holding his own at half a second. That is probably over

:20:29. > :20:33.ten metres. He has have a second to pick up. He has made an inroad. It

:20:34. > :20:37.is going to take an enormous final lap.

:20:38. > :20:42.It is going to get him on the podium. Halfway down the back

:20:43. > :20:46.straight, he just has to go down the banking one final time. Then he

:20:47. > :20:48.brings it home to the finish now. It is going to be close. It is good

:20:49. > :20:57.enough for second place. Silver medal position for Simon van

:20:58. > :21:03.Velthooven. He was second last year, I wonder whether he will be

:21:04. > :21:11.second this year. We spoke about world records. It is this man who

:21:12. > :21:19.holds the world record, albeit at altitude. He has already shown us he

:21:20. > :21:25.is on fantastic form. My guess would be the New Zealander is heading for

:21:26. > :21:31.a bronze medal spot here. Francois Pervis has got his work cut out. He

:21:32. > :21:41.certainly has the form but that is some barrier to overcome. Sub one

:21:42. > :21:50.minute, incredible time. From such a young rider as well. Yes, 23, from

:21:51. > :21:54.Germany. Francois Pervis has been around for a long time. He has seen

:21:55. > :22:03.it all before. He will not be put off. The last time it was held in

:22:04. > :22:10.the Olympic Games, 2004, he wrote. -- he was in it. He produced a ride

:22:11. > :22:11.that was good enough for six place. That was 20 years ago in the Olympic

:22:12. > :22:24.Games. The simplest ideas are the best. Big

:22:25. > :22:32.white strap, good security, nice and clean. Surprised that the British

:22:33. > :22:43.team did not come up with that one. We know his form is good. Will it be

:22:44. > :22:47.good enough? 59.984 is the time to beat.

:22:48. > :23:06.We will know in one minute. It is all about pacing. The second half of

:23:07. > :23:11.the race is what it is all about. Three tenths of a second inside that

:23:12. > :23:18.fastest time! He is absolutely flying, it is as if he has been

:23:19. > :23:24.thrown from a gun. We can expect this to be good. That is enormous.

:23:25. > :23:28.At the halfway mark, it is over eight tenths of a second, this is an

:23:29. > :23:35.absolutely stunning ride by the defending champion from France,

:23:36. > :23:38.Francois Pervis. We could see it below 59 seconds. That would be

:23:39. > :23:43.quite incredible. He is nearly a full second ahead of every other

:23:44. > :23:48.rider. Have a lap to go. What has he got left in the legs? Is it a ride

:23:49. > :23:55.that will bring him a gold medal? I'm sure it is X permission Mark it

:23:56. > :24:01.absolutely is! The fastest ever World Championship time. The world

:24:02. > :24:09.record holder is still the world champion and the king of the kilo.

:24:10. > :24:16.That takes some doing, to come out and beat the fastest ever time by

:24:17. > :24:21.over half a second. I have never seen anything like that at the World

:24:22. > :24:26.Championships. He takes the applause of the crowd while we watch the

:24:27. > :24:33.replay. That was a phenomenal ride. Technically superb. The bar was set

:24:34. > :24:39.extremely high. He did not just squeak inside the time, he

:24:40. > :24:48.absolutely annihilated it. I am going to defer to the commentators,

:24:49. > :24:53.but we think Francois Pervis is superb. A great success story for

:24:54. > :24:58.France. One of the great success stories for Britain has been Katie

:24:59. > :25:06.Archibald, going in the points race. Quite remarkable for a young woman

:25:07. > :25:13.who only started cycling in 2011. 100 laps of the track. Points every

:25:14. > :25:20.ten laps. If you gain a lap it is 20 point bonus.

:25:21. > :25:26.They are one lap away from the next set of points. She should be able to

:25:27. > :25:30.score some points, get something for her effort. I don't think these two

:25:31. > :25:36.will be allowed to stay away. The gap is closing. She will get some

:25:37. > :25:44.points on the board. Katie Archibald has got five points on the board.

:25:45. > :25:50.Excellent start. She is making a race of it. The first to make the

:25:51. > :25:54.junction. They are really starting to put the hammer down in front of

:25:55. > :26:01.her. Trying to chase. It is making it more difficult. Not far off the

:26:02. > :26:09.back as you can see. Amy Cure is trying to get that lap.

:26:10. > :26:33.Stephanie Pohl has broken away from the five others. Jasmin Glaesser is

:26:34. > :26:40.puffing. Make the junction. Move into second place.

:26:41. > :26:49.Amy Cure is the leader on 30 points overall. Stephanie Pohl is up to 25.

:26:50. > :27:02.It is going to be made by Katie Archibald. They have joined the back

:27:03. > :27:05.of the pellet -- peloton. It is going to be a good head-to-head

:27:06. > :27:16.battle. Amy Cure has got the legs and takes five points. That puts her

:27:17. > :27:20.strongly in the lead. Comes at to take the bell. One lap to go. She is

:27:21. > :27:27.in trouble here. Comes around the long way. Leading the chase now.

:27:28. > :27:33.Jasmin Glaesser is coming around the top. They are outside the top is at

:27:34. > :27:38.the moment, Amy Cure is up towards the line. Trying to hang on.

:27:39. > :27:44.Jasmin Glaesser crosses the line in first place on the final sprint.

:27:45. > :27:49.What a close race that was at the end. Amy Cure, the gold medallist

:27:50. > :27:56.ahead of Stephanie Pohl from Germany. In fourth place, Katie

:27:57. > :28:04.Archibald from Great Britain. Give us your initial thoughts. It is a

:28:05. > :28:10.great performance. I can imagine I will do much better than that, but I

:28:11. > :28:18.was not content, I knew I had lost it in that last half. It is the end

:28:19. > :28:21.that you remember. I was not there. You had a busy week, to come away

:28:22. > :28:30.with the rainbow jersey from the start of the week, overall, your

:28:31. > :28:36.thoughts on this? It has been all the things you can imagine. It felt

:28:37. > :28:39.once we got the rainbow jersey, the pressure was on for this, because

:28:40. > :28:45.before that, nobody knew my name, you could get away with coming out

:28:46. > :28:50.and they would not notice. I had a pretty tough time coming into it,

:28:51. > :28:56.overthinking things. It is a bit of a relief, it is fourth place, but I

:28:57. > :29:01.will hopefully get another chance to have another crack at it. Very cool

:29:02. > :29:07.doing your interview on the bike afterwards. You know Katie is pretty

:29:08. > :29:12.well. It has been a remarkable journey. Even 12 months ago, nobody

:29:13. > :29:15.would have known her name. She came into the team pursuit squad last

:29:16. > :29:22.summer, did an incredible ride at the championships, she has had an

:29:23. > :29:25.incredible winter, she has been doing bunch races as well as the

:29:26. > :29:34.team pursuit. I'm looking forward to racing with her on the road. The

:29:35. > :29:40.women's team pursuit, they have won the gold medal again. Not quite as

:29:41. > :29:50.dominant as we have seen them, but you have got five into four. You

:29:51. > :30:02.have got Dani King, Joanna Rowsell, Elinor Barker, and Katie Archibald.

:30:03. > :30:08.There is also Laura Trott. How will that work? We will have to qualify

:30:09. > :30:13.through different events for the World Championships. We have several

:30:14. > :30:19.seasons to go through until we get to the Olympic year. Five riders is

:30:20. > :30:22.the minimum that we can cope with. The competition within the team will

:30:23. > :30:28.be fierce, because no one will want to demand five. Sir Chris Hoy

:30:29. > :30:32.mentioned in his interview, the Olympics. It is remarkable, coming

:30:33. > :30:43.from athletics, you have a four-year cycle. But the obsession within

:30:44. > :30:50.cycling is overwhelming? It is not just the Olympics. We cherish our

:30:51. > :30:54.world championship medals. The media builds up everything around the

:30:55. > :30:57.Olympics. Funding is based on Olympic medals. As athletes, you

:30:58. > :31:03.cherish this world championship titles. Does it get into the psyche

:31:04. > :31:10.of the athletes. I want to win, but if I do not, it is still about the

:31:11. > :31:16.Olympics? I am sure there have been arguments between the athletes and

:31:17. > :31:20.the management. The management want to experiment, we do not care what

:31:21. > :31:26.we do in the middle, but the athletes say, we want medals. It is

:31:27. > :31:30.a tough call. You will be back tomorrow, Jamie Staff, Sarah, you

:31:31. > :31:37.will not. What is on your radar for the next few months? Hopefully the

:31:38. > :31:41.cycling team for the Paralympic track Championships will be

:31:42. > :31:46.announced over the coming weeks. If that goes well, I will try and

:31:47. > :31:51.defend my world titles. I am really excited to get going again.

:31:52. > :31:56.Brilliant. Thank you for being with us. We will see you tomorrow. Before

:31:57. > :32:05.then, we are on the red button from ten o'clock. We are online from a 20

:32:06. > :32:11.PM. We will have the conclusion of Laura Trott's omniums. In terms of

:32:12. > :32:24.the football, this is what we have in store. That is all from us. It is

:32:25. > :32:28.not often from British Cycling that you get a blank day with no medals.

:32:29. > :32:31.That is what has happened. Hopefully better tomorrow.
