:00:11. > :00:28.she has done it. Great Britain are the team that could not be beaten.
:00:29. > :00:41.They are the world champions a game. -- again.
:00:42. > :00:49.A very good afternoon to you. The championships so far has been really
:00:50. > :01:02.disappointing from the normally dominant British Cycling team. Jamie
:01:03. > :01:07.staff is alongside me once again. Me and Jamie are happy we are tired.
:01:08. > :01:16.I'm sure Sarah Storey will catch up later on I play. Here is what she
:01:17. > :01:22.had two look forward to. It is Laura Trott against Sarah Hammer in the
:01:23. > :01:30.women's Omnium. No Olympic champion in the men's sprint.
:01:31. > :01:37.Becky James has a world title to defend. We will see the women's
:01:38. > :01:45.Kieren where Kristina Vogel is looking for her third rainbow
:01:46. > :01:49.jersey. Laura Trott stole our hearts in London 2012 with the dramatic
:01:50. > :02:03.Omnium win. It should be a battle royal in -- here. Here comes Laura
:02:04. > :02:19.Trott. She wins the final event. She wins the women's Omnium. What keeps
:02:20. > :02:26.driving you and driving you? I love winning. You finish, I did a 500
:02:27. > :02:35.metres, you look at the board and see you have one and it overrides
:02:36. > :02:41.any other feeling you have. Where do you think you are now? There is
:02:42. > :02:46.always something I need to improve on.
:02:47. > :02:57.We have been doing a lot and I did eight points race and my coach said
:02:58. > :03:03.I did really well. To hear that gave me quite a bit of hope and good
:03:04. > :03:10.feelings. You have a huge target on your back. Does it make it just that
:03:11. > :03:18.little bit harder? It definitely does. It is hard. I see people get
:03:19. > :03:26.an easy lap. I try and get a lap and I cannot do it. It takes me 60 laps
:03:27. > :03:31.to get it. I do think it makes it harder. If it were not like that,
:03:32. > :03:38.maybe I would not enjoy it so much because it might be easier. When it
:03:39. > :03:44.comes to competitions, she is stealing. First up, it was that
:03:45. > :03:52.flying lap. This time trial is 250 metres. Laura started off well and
:03:53. > :04:02.was in third place. She was one point and one place behind Sarah
:04:03. > :04:10.Hammer, her archrival. Next was the points race. Sarah Hammer only
:04:11. > :04:15.featured in one of the eight sprints but gained lap. Despite Laura Trott
:04:16. > :04:20.scoring heavily, the victory went to the American with Laura in third
:04:21. > :04:25.place. As expected, the battle was on. The American had the best of the
:04:26. > :04:42.early skirmishes. Next up it was the elimination race.
:04:43. > :04:54.The rider from Colombia. This is supposed to be neutralised lap. They
:04:55. > :04:57.are already contesting positions. Sarah Hammer started off on the
:04:58. > :05:03.front line. You would think they were sprinting for the first points.
:05:04. > :05:14.Coming through, around on the outside, as they start the race is
:05:15. > :05:21.the Polish rider. The French rider is also towards the front. On the
:05:22. > :05:26.next time they cross the line, the first rider will be eliminated, that
:05:27. > :05:32.is the last rider to cross the line. Laura Trott is towards the back of
:05:33. > :05:38.the field. When I first saw this it alarmed me. I thought she had got
:05:39. > :05:42.herself into difficulties. I realised she was so good, she knows
:05:43. > :05:49.what to do. She spots the gaps when we would spot the bodies and somehow
:05:50. > :05:53.slipped through them. In that statement I've just made, how did
:05:54. > :06:04.she get from the back to the front in about eight seconds? The next
:06:05. > :06:06.time over the line we will lose our second rider. Laura Trott is at the
:06:07. > :06:25.front. It is the rider from Hong Kong who
:06:26. > :06:31.has gone. She is out. Sarah Hammer got herself into a bit of bother.
:06:32. > :06:38.Not afraid of hard work. She is happy to sit on the front and ride
:06:39. > :06:47.from there. The Belgian is quite prominent as well. Laura Trott at
:06:48. > :06:54.the bottom of the track, about force in line at the moment. Not in a bad
:06:55. > :07:00.position at all. Was that the rider from Japan? It may well have been
:07:01. > :07:07.the rider from Japan who has gone. No, it is the Cuban rider. There was
:07:08. > :07:14.half a wheel in it. Not quite in line with the finish here. Laura
:07:15. > :07:20.Trott tucked away in the middle of the pack.
:07:21. > :07:29.The Colombian is riding on the front. Here comes Laura Trott once
:07:30. > :07:40.again, just gliding towards the front. The rider from Hong Kong is
:07:41. > :07:48.at this time. It is the Japanese rider who has gone. That does
:07:49. > :07:53.surprise me. Laura Trott in second place. Sarah Hammer right at the
:07:54. > :07:58.back at the moment. She is bouncing along at the back of the field and
:07:59. > :08:09.she now makes a move. She goes past the Italian. She is gone. Sarah
:08:10. > :08:13.Hammer is making hard work of this race. That is three times she has
:08:14. > :08:18.been swamped and had to come around the outside. She stalled again
:08:19. > :08:23.halfway. She is covering a lot of distance. Laura Trott, on the
:08:24. > :08:33.inside, is just minding the holes when she needs to. The Russian rider
:08:34. > :08:45.is at the rear of the field at the moment. Her position in this field
:08:46. > :08:55.is at risk. How she made it? It was closed between her and the rider
:08:56. > :08:59.from Belarus. It is just starting to whittle down. It comes thick and
:09:00. > :09:04.fast in the elimination race. Another rider will go next time
:09:05. > :09:10.around. Laura Trott goes to the front of the field. The rider at the
:09:11. > :09:18.back again, who is in trouble, is the Russian.
:09:19. > :09:36.That was a close one. It made BBC back Ian. Yes, it is. -- it may be
:09:37. > :09:47.the Slovakian. Laura Trott is still riding in front.
:09:48. > :09:55.Laura Trott has ridden very well so far in this elimination race. She is
:09:56. > :10:05.in second place overall, three points behind Sarah Hammer.
:10:06. > :10:37.Laura Trott in second place. Yet again, the ration is loitering
:10:38. > :10:42.towards the back of the field. The French athlete is the overall winner
:10:43. > :10:51.of the cup series. She could not hang around long enough to contest a
:10:52. > :10:59.finish here. France have gone. Laura Trott in second place. Sarah Hammer
:11:00. > :11:04.back in fifth. Laura Trott was almost boxed in but she spotted it.
:11:05. > :11:15.I am trying to recall when she last lost one of these events. The
:11:16. > :11:16.Spaniard is out. Now it starts to really get interesting. We are down
:11:17. > :11:37.to the last half-dozen. Sarah Hammer is on the back now. She
:11:38. > :11:45.is really struggling with this. This could play into the hands of Laura
:11:46. > :11:52.Trott. The Colombian is in a really difficult position. She will go. She
:11:53. > :11:58.could not quite get on the back of the net Edmondson. She desperately
:11:59. > :12:04.needs a good elimination race. That is after the points race where she
:12:05. > :12:08.finishes in 11 if she wants a podium spot. A couple of gold medals for
:12:09. > :12:16.the Edmondson family already. Her brother has one two golds. Sarah
:12:17. > :12:21.Hammer is in big trouble at the back. She may concede a few points.
:12:22. > :12:28.Laura Trott suddenly finds herself at the back. This will be tight as
:12:29. > :12:33.they cross the line. Laura Trott found a space that was not there.
:12:34. > :12:43.That was a very courageous move to go on the inside. She forced her way
:12:44. > :12:46.through. There was no gap but Laura Trott created one. She knew she was
:12:47. > :13:07.in trouble. Now we are down to five. Sarah Hammer again on the rear. She
:13:08. > :13:18.is going to try to box Laura Trott but she spotted it. Now we are down
:13:19. > :13:25.to four. Just two more eliminations before the final sprint. It is
:13:26. > :13:33.almost like a sprint now, isn't it? A sprint lap next time. Laura Trott
:13:34. > :13:38.is boxed in. Sarah Hammer is trying to make sure she stays boxed in. She
:13:39. > :13:45.will have to work hard. Edmondson leaves out the sprint. Laura Trott
:13:46. > :13:51.has work to do as they come up towards the line. Had she made it?
:13:52. > :14:02.That is a big surprise. In Laura Trott terms, that is an early exit
:14:03. > :14:09.from the elimination race. She was just behind Sarah Hammer. That is a
:14:10. > :14:16.real blow. I was just saying, I cannot remember the last time she
:14:17. > :14:21.lost one of these events. She will take four points from this event.
:14:22. > :14:24.Sarah Hammer looks as if she was having to work really hard earlier
:14:25. > :14:30.in this elimination race. She is still there right at the end.
:14:31. > :14:37.Edmondson is out. It'll be Belgian man the USA, the last two on the
:14:38. > :14:41.track. Sarah Hammer looked to be in trouble all away through the race.
:14:42. > :14:59.She gets better and better as the numbers whittle down.
:15:00. > :15:10.The final sprint for the line. Sarah Hammer on the inside of the track.
:15:11. > :15:18.Sarah Hammer, what an opening day she has had! She has stamped her
:15:19. > :15:23.authority all away over the competition. Laura Trott has it all
:15:24. > :15:30.to do issues to overcome the American on day two. Day two began
:15:31. > :15:38.with the individual pursuit in the two kilometre time trial. Those two
:15:39. > :15:42.athletes were a class above the rest but Sarah Hammer prevailed by just
:15:43. > :15:48.over half a second to put her seven points clear. Two events to go. Next
:15:49. > :15:55.the scratch race over ten kilometres. It is Laura were to take
:15:56. > :16:00.gold, this is her last chance. This turned out to be the least
:16:01. > :16:03.successful event for both Sarah Hammer and Laura Trott with the
:16:04. > :16:09.American pipping the Brit by just one place. The title and the rainbow
:16:10. > :16:15.jersey will stay in the states in the last event. Edmondson closing in
:16:16. > :16:36.on bronze. A good start from and it is and is
:16:37. > :16:42.on. She has got a chance to take another round here. She won the
:16:43. > :16:53.opener yesterday morning. She was the second fastest. It is all down
:16:54. > :17:03.to the final 250 metres. A high line on the track. It is a new fastest
:17:04. > :17:12.time. She just kept winding up and up. Jolien D'Hoore's time is good
:17:13. > :17:19.enough for fourth place. She will be reasonably pleased. It is not her
:17:20. > :17:28.favourite discipline. And it is and set a tough mark.
:17:29. > :17:37.The sixth and final race. It has not gone the way she would have wanted,
:17:38. > :17:43.she has been competitive throughout, as always, but Sarah Hammer has had
:17:44. > :17:47.her number this time. And eight point difference, so this ride is
:17:48. > :17:53.unlikely to affect the overall result. They have a decent buffer on
:17:54. > :17:58.the riders behind them. Laura Trott has got to hold off Annette
:17:59. > :18:06.Edmondson behind her. A picture of concentration, Laura Trott gets
:18:07. > :18:12.under way. Look at her go. She does not lack courage. Neither of them
:18:13. > :18:23.do. They put every sinew into the ride. Laura Trott has just got to
:18:24. > :18:27.keep going. That is the only thing she can control, and she has got to
:18:28. > :18:34.hope that Sarah Hammer loses more time. Laura Trott crosses the line
:18:35. > :18:38.second fastest. Sarah Hammer's time is good enough for fourth place,
:18:39. > :18:44.there is the world champion, she has won it for the second year in a row,
:18:45. > :18:51.it is exactly the same scenario as last time, Sarah Hammer, gold, and
:18:52. > :18:55.silver for Laura Trott. Not a great ride for Sarah Hammer there, but she
:18:56. > :19:00.did enough, she built up a buffer of points, and that is what she had it
:19:01. > :19:06.for. Sarah Hammer finishing with 14 points, Laura Trott on 20. Annette
:19:07. > :19:12.Edmondson, the Olympic bronze medallist, gets a bronze medal here,
:19:13. > :19:15.24 points. Jolien D'Hoore outside the medals by some distance, 35
:19:16. > :19:26.points. A silver medal to add to the gold
:19:27. > :19:32.medal you won earlier in the week, you did not do a lot wrong. Sarah
:19:33. > :19:38.Hammer was just keen to get the gold medal. Yes, she rode amazingly, she
:19:39. > :19:44.won three of the six events. The better girl won on the day. Like you
:19:45. > :19:49.say, I tried my best, I rode a decent points race for once. It is
:19:50. > :19:55.putting the pieces together. The elimination race let me down this
:19:56. > :19:59.time. But everything else went well. It is getting six complete events
:20:00. > :20:03.right on the day. The focus for you is the team to shoot, but the fact
:20:04. > :20:10.you have been so competitive in the bunch races is progress. Definitely,
:20:11. > :20:17.the team pursuit helps me, because on the road we train further and do
:20:18. > :20:21.some hard, flat-out efforts, and helps in the bunch races. Chris
:20:22. > :20:26.Newton has been doing a lot of work with me, it is paying off. You are
:20:27. > :20:30.paying the price for John arousal beating Sarah Hammer, because she
:20:31. > :20:36.was desperate to get the medal, she was angry. She tweeted to say how
:20:37. > :20:41.gutted she was, so she was out to get us back, and she did! How have
:20:42. > :20:47.you enjoyed these championships? I really enjoy the team pursuit, that
:20:48. > :20:51.was my best victory. Things went wrong and we still won, so we could
:20:52. > :20:56.laugh about it. I really wanted to win the omnium. That was a bit of a
:20:57. > :21:01.disappointment, but to come away with a silver, I am super happy.
:21:02. > :21:07.A gold medal for Sarah Hammer. You know her well. You see her training
:21:08. > :21:15.in the state, that was a dominant performance. She wanted to prove a
:21:16. > :21:20.point. She has had a quick rise back to form, she let herself go a bit
:21:21. > :21:25.about -- after the Olympics. She is training hard back home, but she is
:21:26. > :21:30.there to prove a point and stamp her authority on that discipline and
:21:31. > :21:36.show she is in contention for Rio de Janeiro. The different looking
:21:37. > :21:41.athlete, Sarah Hammer is a powerhouse, Laura Trott is much
:21:42. > :21:45.slighter, but that performance from Sarah was so dominant, for Laura,
:21:46. > :21:53.she must look and think, where are the weaknesses for Sarah? Sarah
:21:54. > :21:58.struggles being in the pack, she is not comfortable at that, she is
:21:59. > :22:01.working on it, obviously, her coaches have addressed it and they
:22:02. > :22:06.are trying to get her more comfortable, they will look at how
:22:07. > :22:12.races are panning out. We are doing the same thing with Laura. She does
:22:13. > :22:18.have witnesses, everybody does. At the moment, Laura is scratching her
:22:19. > :22:24.head, how can I beat her? Sarah is going really fast, she is a
:22:25. > :22:27.powerhouse, she is strong. You have got the insight from working in the
:22:28. > :22:33.American system, how do they view what has been domination by British
:22:34. > :22:36.cyclist for five or six years? It almost feels like it is coming to an
:22:37. > :22:42.end a little bit, but let's not speak too soon. What is the view to
:22:43. > :22:48.what is going on here? There is the target. Britain has been so
:22:49. > :22:52.dominant. It will be tough for them, they have the target on their back,
:22:53. > :22:57.whenever we have our review meetings or preseason meetings, we are
:22:58. > :23:04.looking at a medal tally for the World Championships, Britain set the
:23:05. > :23:08.benchmark, those are the goals we are trying to achieve. You look at
:23:09. > :23:14.what written has done and you think, why can't we do that? The other
:23:15. > :23:20.countries are doing it as well. That was Britain's Outlook years ago.
:23:21. > :23:28.Germany or France, if they can do it, why can't we? Everybody is
:23:29. > :23:33.gunning for Britain. We will move onto the sprint, it has been a tough
:23:34. > :23:38.Championships for Becky James, a year ago, for medals, but a bronze
:23:39. > :23:42.so far. The final event for her was the one in which she was the
:23:43. > :23:44.defending world champion, the keirin, but she was up against
:23:45. > :24:03.Kristina Vogel. We are ready to go. Anna Meares
:24:04. > :24:08.feeling the consequences of taking a year out. She does not quite have
:24:09. > :24:13.the depth she has had in the past. The experience is there. She should
:24:14. > :24:20.not be ruled out, because she will know how to place herself. Kristina
:24:21. > :24:25.Vogel mirrors her male counterpart, Francois Pervis, head and shoulders
:24:26. > :24:31.stronger than the others. It is never sure in the keirin. Becky
:24:32. > :24:38.James did not look as strong as I was expecting in the previous round.
:24:39. > :24:44.Sandie Clair, from Anna Meares, Vicky James, Kristina Vogel, Daniela
:24:45. > :24:53.Gaxiola, and at the back, Elena Brezhniva. The World Championship
:24:54. > :24:56.final, eight laps of the track. They will have six to go when they
:24:57. > :25:08.crossed the line in the next two seconds. 33 kilometres an hour. The
:25:09. > :25:16.dramatic nature of the music over the tannoy ratchets up the tension
:25:17. > :25:24.for the crowd. Everybody happy to stay in position for the moment.
:25:25. > :25:29.Still five laps remaining. 36 kilometres an hour, the bike. Sandie
:25:30. > :25:37.Clair, Anna Meares, Becky James, Kristina Vogel, Daniela Gaxiola and
:25:38. > :25:52.Elena Brezhniva, in that order. 40 kilometres an hour.
:25:53. > :26:02.One lap to go until we lose the motorbike. Already, Anna Meares
:26:03. > :26:05.starting to check behind. As soon as they start to see somebody
:26:06. > :26:10.accelerate, they will try to hold them on the shoulder. Sandie Clair
:26:11. > :26:17.laying off the bike. Kristina Vogel will make her move soon. The race is
:26:18. > :26:23.on. Just over two laps to go, Sandie Clair in front, Anna Meares in
:26:24. > :26:33.second, Eddie James looking to see where Kristina Vogel is. The Russian
:26:34. > :26:41.rider boxed in. Sandie Clair is being left behind. They take the
:26:42. > :26:49.bell. It is going to be between the front three.
:26:50. > :26:55.Kristina Vogel has the speed, it is Kristina Vogel who takes the crown,
:26:56. > :27:03.Anna Meares with the silver, and in third place, Becky James for Great
:27:04. > :27:06.Britain. Kristina Vogel is a triple world champion, she is one of the
:27:07. > :27:13.Starts of this week in Colombia. The team sprint hold on the opening
:27:14. > :27:18.night, the individual sprint gold, and she has book ended it with the
:27:19. > :27:23.keirin gold. Becky James' world title has gone, but she fought all
:27:24. > :27:28.the way. Nobody was going to beat Kristina Vogel today, but Becky
:27:29. > :27:32.James spotted her going past, she fought her way up, she got onto her
:27:33. > :27:37.wheel, as soon as Kristina Vogel dropped down, she was on the
:27:38. > :27:44.shoulder of Anna Meares. She is congratulating Kristina Vogel. She
:27:45. > :27:49.knew, I have got to hold this wheel. Experience got that silver medal.
:27:50. > :27:53.Becky James fought hard, courageously, to take the bronze
:27:54. > :27:57.medal, that was the best she could hope for there.
:27:58. > :28:05.Your third time on the top step of the podium, how special does this
:28:06. > :28:15.feel? It is really special. An amazing crowd. So many feelings come
:28:16. > :28:19.to me. I never accepted that I would win three gold medals. You have
:28:20. > :28:24.worked so hard, you have raised almost every day, how are you
:28:25. > :28:34.feeling? I am now tired, but I want to party now! After yesterday, I am
:28:35. > :28:40.good. Just be easy today, enjoy my ride, see what will happen, push
:28:41. > :28:49.myself, and it worked. The last round, push, push, push. Just happy
:28:50. > :28:55.that it worked. Congratulations, a bronze medal,
:28:56. > :29:01.watching the race a game, you did not put a foot wrong, you were on
:29:02. > :29:05.the wheel. Definitely, when Kristina Vogel went, I could have sat on the
:29:06. > :29:11.wheel of Anna Meares, and I thought somebody could come round. I was
:29:12. > :29:16.going to chase the wheel, I could feel Anna Meares underneath me. It
:29:17. > :29:22.was hard, going through the turn, but I cannot complain with a bronze
:29:23. > :29:25.medal. A really high quality, Anna Meares coming back, and Kristina
:29:26. > :29:30.Vogel, three gold medals, a phenomenal performance. She has been
:29:31. > :29:36.flying all season, through the World Cup, she has been on another level.
:29:37. > :29:41.She deserved to win the medals. I have got something to chase next
:29:42. > :29:44.year. It was always going to be difficult to replicate the success
:29:45. > :29:49.of last year, but what are your thoughts? It has been really good, I
:29:50. > :29:55.can take a lot away. I have learned a few different things. My form had
:29:56. > :29:59.been pretty good, and I have raced as well as I could. I love racing
:30:00. > :30:04.the keirin, it is nice to finish with that. There will be lots of
:30:05. > :30:08.stuff I can work on after this. Hopefully, I will come out better
:30:09. > :30:12.next year. Your thoughts will switch to Glasgow before that. Now this is
:30:13. > :30:20.at the way, that will be my focus. It is not a long way at all.
:30:21. > :30:26.Kristina Vogel unbelievable, but a great bronze medal for Becky James.
:30:27. > :30:31.It is important for her to come away with something, even though she did
:30:32. > :30:34.not defend her title. Yes, just to get on the podium. It is not what
:30:35. > :30:40.you want, but you will take it. She looked good. She could have gone a
:30:41. > :30:46.bit earlier and got to the front, she could have won it. She could
:30:47. > :30:50.have also cut Anna Meares off. She did not lean on her quite enough,
:30:51. > :30:58.she could have closed the door and made it hard for her. She went a
:30:59. > :31:09.long longer, way higher on the track. She talked about tactics and
:31:10. > :31:22.not liking her tactics in the individual sprint.
:31:23. > :31:31.The keirin is hard. All the other athletes, it is hard to get right.
:31:32. > :31:38.There are so many variables going on. Like I was telling you a moment
:31:39. > :31:45.ago, you are in the race and behind a motorbike. When do I go, when do I
:31:46. > :31:49.go? Shane Sutton used to tell me, the first time you think it is
:31:50. > :31:54.generally when you should go. That tactic seemed to work for me. I
:31:55. > :32:02.think she had it in her legs that she should not be too disappointed.
:32:03. > :32:06.You mentioned Shane Sutton. We caught up with him for his
:32:07. > :32:11.assessment. I am sure you will have time to reflect on these
:32:12. > :32:16.championships as you make your way back to Manchester. Five medals,
:32:17. > :32:21.what is your initial assessment? We were hoping for six medals. A little
:32:22. > :32:25.bit of disappointment in certain events. There are a lot of
:32:26. > :32:32.positives. We are by we are. There is a lot of work to do. It is back
:32:33. > :32:37.to the drawing board. No medals at all for the Great Britain men's
:32:38. > :32:43.team. I think 1998 was the last time that happened. How concerned are you
:32:44. > :32:46.and how concerned should we be? It is about going back and addressing
:32:47. > :32:55.where we went wrong and what areas we need to work on. The boys will be
:32:56. > :33:00.a bit disappointed. It will give them time to reflect and say, we
:33:01. > :33:06.have got to get on with it. Well done to the girls, to be honest.
:33:07. > :33:09.Because we are used to seeing the much British success, we are
:33:10. > :33:15.surprised when there is so little success from the men 's team. Where
:33:16. > :33:24.has it gone wrong? It went wrong going into Christmas. The World Cup
:33:25. > :33:28.in Manchester was good. Coming back in after Christmas, we were not
:33:29. > :33:32.where we wanted them to be. We had to rejigger a few things here and
:33:33. > :33:38.there. One thing and another and you are where you are, you need to
:33:39. > :33:47.accept that and move on. The success of the British team has been built
:33:48. > :33:55.on the endurance team. It is very disappointing for them. I would
:33:56. > :34:04.challenge you. The men's sprint team, with the Chris Hoy and his
:34:05. > :34:10.reign, we were untouchable. We cannot win everything. The boys must
:34:11. > :34:18.accept that. Hopefully we can turn it around. What kind review will you
:34:19. > :34:24.have after these championships? They are setting a plan in place in
:34:25. > :34:29.Manchester. We have great athletes. They will understand they have
:34:30. > :34:34.underperformed. Five medals at World Championship is, in another sport,
:34:35. > :34:40.you would be jumping for joy. Unfortunately, cycling has been so
:34:41. > :34:47.dominant, people expect. As long as we roll up our sleeves and get back
:34:48. > :34:56.to basics, we will be fine. Katie Archibald has come in here and she
:34:57. > :35:11.has performed. It was a great ride for the girls. Look at Laura again.
:35:12. > :35:16.Kein, he has made a massive improvement. We are moving in the
:35:17. > :35:22.right direction but it will take time. Make no excuses, this is a
:35:23. > :35:26.World Championship. We came here to perform and probably did not get
:35:27. > :35:35.what we wanted. At the end of the day, we will reflect and be better
:35:36. > :35:45.next time around. Will Dave continued to lead the team? Only
:35:46. > :35:51.Dave can answer that. His passion is still there. I know that. His hunger
:35:52. > :35:56.is there. He is a busy man. Let's hope we can all turn it around
:35:57. > :36:04.together. Jail not pulling the punches. They were tough questions.
:36:05. > :36:13.One of the phrases we heard was, back to the drawing board. They know
:36:14. > :36:18.what they are doing. They have won multiple medals. What is it about
:36:19. > :36:23.going back to the drawing board? What can they get so wrong? When you
:36:24. > :36:27.are dealing with sport, you will know yourself, there are so many
:36:28. > :36:32.ways of being successful in terms of an athlete. Athletes and coaches
:36:33. > :36:36.think it is a strict rule, routinely go through. You do this and this and
:36:37. > :36:41.the outcome is this. We all know in sport there are so many different
:36:42. > :36:46.ways to attack training programme and training cycle. Some things will
:36:47. > :36:50.work for athletes and some will not. They are trying to find the new
:36:51. > :36:55.edge. What will give them the edge in Rio? Maybe they are trying new
:36:56. > :36:58.things and new tactics. Some of the events have changed little bit,
:36:59. > :37:07.especially for the women. There are new rules in place. In my day and
:37:08. > :37:11.Chris 's day, we only had to show up. Now the riders need to go out
:37:12. > :37:15.and do the small races to even qualify. A lot of things have
:37:16. > :37:22.changed. Everyone else has two played by the same rules. There is
:37:23. > :37:31.still plenty more time for development. Again, I would rather
:37:32. > :37:36.be losing now. Do you think the Whole Road cycling staff has taken
:37:37. > :37:50.some of the emphasis of the men 's side? -- stuff. To separate the two
:37:51. > :37:56.is kind of hard. Especially, even as a GB coach, they are wondering, are
:37:57. > :38:04.they getting the full attention and investment from Dave? I would like
:38:05. > :38:11.to think... They are completely separate entities. I do not think
:38:12. > :38:17.there are any issues. We will move on to the men's sprint and a French
:38:18. > :38:31.man looking for gold medal number three.
:38:32. > :38:40.The first race in the bronze medal match up between the Russian and the
:38:41. > :39:04.Australian. Just having a think about it, five
:39:05. > :39:11.medals for the GB women and none for the blokes. Of the top of my head, I
:39:12. > :39:15.know that none for the blokes is right. It is the women who are
:39:16. > :39:24.leading the way for Great Britain. I think it is going to be four.
:39:25. > :39:46.Sorry, five medals, yes. With two gold, silver and two bronze. The
:39:47. > :40:00.Australian makes his move. He stays up as late as possible and weights
:40:01. > :40:09.over half the back straight I -- half the back straight. Here is the
:40:10. > :40:19.sprint once again. Let's have a look at how close it was. They have been
:40:20. > :40:24.faultless all week, the tactics. He has been the one pushing the wind.
:40:25. > :40:38.It might be starting to take its toll now. He has lost a bit of
:40:39. > :40:49.edge. Francois Pervis against the defending champion. It is a bit
:40:50. > :40:57.scary, to be fair. I am feeling slightly intimidated. I am 30 metres
:40:58. > :41:10.away. The men's sprint final. The best of three.
:41:11. > :41:24.They must continue now at least at walking pace. He is dictating the
:41:25. > :41:30.pace of the race at this moment, the commissar. He seems to be content
:41:31. > :41:42.they have managed that. He hands over to his fellow commissar. They
:41:43. > :41:49.are playing cat and mouse. They need to keep the bikes moving. They did
:41:50. > :41:53.not manage to do that convincingly. That was very foolish. We will do
:41:54. > :42:14.that all again in a moment or two. And, at the second time of asking,
:42:15. > :42:26.in this first race in the sprint final, it runs away. Bruce just get
:42:27. > :42:43.up around the stadium will stop flags fluttering away.
:42:44. > :42:55.Similar tactics to a minute or two number Aago. They are remembering to
:42:56. > :43:04.keep things moving. -- a couple of minutes ago. He is safe now. If he
:43:05. > :43:11.wants to stop, he is free to do so. Ironically, he decides to start
:43:12. > :43:26.accelerating at that point. He is trying to get Purvis to accelerate.
:43:27. > :43:33.They take the pressure off the back wheel and freeze it by using sheer
:43:34. > :43:44.muscle power. The concentration on the face of Pervis. He does not want
:43:45. > :43:59.to take the front position. He is trying really hard to get the front
:44:00. > :44:04.position. Just out of principle, Pervis is trying to stop him. He
:44:05. > :44:29.gave him a piercing look. Now the sprint starts. The sprint
:44:30. > :44:37.round the back straight is well and truly under way. Francois Pervis is
:44:38. > :44:46.drawing level. Yes, he is. Francois Pervis takes this race. It was one
:44:47. > :44:50.with a lap to go. He allowed Francois Pervis to keep the height.
:44:51. > :44:56.That is all he needed, that kind of advantage, to accelerate down the
:44:57. > :45:00.back straight. You can see how he used it to accelerate into the
:45:01. > :45:05.slipstream. He started to power around the outside on the final
:45:06. > :45:12.bend. He knew he had it. It looks close to us but they him it was
:45:13. > :45:18.never in doubt. It was cat and mouse. When it got going, it was
:45:19. > :45:32.super fast. A little reminder of what we have here. The European
:45:33. > :45:40.champion from Russia is going for bronze against Glaitzer. Glaitzer
:45:41. > :45:45.have to win this time. Dmitriev is one win away from the bronze medal.
:45:46. > :45:51.A convincing right by him in the previous round. He is riding out in
:45:52. > :45:56.a pattern he has set out, which is to go to the front and move around
:45:57. > :46:03.the track. He needs to stay high as late as possible. He has 180 metres
:46:04. > :46:10.to go into the back straight and then he will accelerate hard. He
:46:11. > :46:15.mixes up his tactics. We have just gone beyond the line on the track,
:46:16. > :46:21.the half lap mark. That is why it is OK to do a track stand at this
:46:22. > :46:25.point. The commissar has his stopwatch running, 30 seconds the
:46:26. > :46:29.limit. If they are not moving by that time, the gun is fired and they
:46:30. > :46:40.can restart the race. They can do this a maximum of twice. Every once
:46:41. > :46:46.in a blue moon, somebody takes the opportunity to attack and goes for a
:46:47. > :46:52.long one. It is very rare. This is generally when it happens, somebody
:46:53. > :46:56.just starts to think about their track stand, forget the opposition,
:46:57. > :47:00.give them an opportunity to disappear up the road. It does not
:47:01. > :47:21.happen very often. Denis Dmitriev at the front. Just
:47:22. > :47:31.over a lap and a half remaining. He will try and write this race the
:47:32. > :47:32.same way again. Go high, control. Matthew Glaetzer keeping his eye on
:47:33. > :47:49.the Russian. Denis Dmitriev claims the bronze
:47:50. > :47:53.panel. That is the first tactical error I have seen from Matthew
:47:54. > :47:59.Glaetzer. In the previous round, it was his superior acceleration that
:48:00. > :48:03.one Denis Dmitriev the race. Matthew Glaetzer thought he would make it as
:48:04. > :48:07.late as possible so there was no room for the Russian to come back,
:48:08. > :48:17.but that was what his strength is, the sharp acceleration. Denis
:48:18. > :48:20.Dmitriev a convincing winner. The winner of the kilometre and the
:48:21. > :48:31.winner of the keirin. Going for the hat-trick.
:48:32. > :48:37.Three laps of the track, potentially, to decide the outcome
:48:38. > :48:46.of the sprint World Championship. Some very dire music in the
:48:47. > :49:12.background! He looks to be very relaxed,
:49:13. > :49:22.Francois Pervis, knocking around the track, and up into the stands. He
:49:23. > :49:31.will need to be fully focused. Otherwise, we will go to a deciding
:49:32. > :49:37.race. The wind-up is starting already, both riders getting maximum
:49:38. > :49:45.height. The pace increasing all the time. He is going to go for the
:49:46. > :49:55.inside, which is what Francois Pervis wants him to do.
:49:56. > :50:04.Can Francois Pervis claim the gold medal? Francois Pervis is the world
:50:05. > :50:11.champion. It is the third gold medal of the week. It is not about the
:50:12. > :50:17.time, but what a time it was, to claim the gold medal. A ready and
:50:18. > :50:25.sequence of sprints from Francois Pervis. It is the 11th time in his
:50:26. > :50:26.career that he has won a World Championship medal, and it is the
:50:27. > :50:38.fourth time that it has been gold. A magnificent performance, this is a
:50:39. > :50:42.special place for you. Yes, three world titles, it is a first time for
:50:43. > :50:52.me, the first time I have won the individual sprint, and the keirin. I
:50:53. > :50:59.did an amazing kilometre. The public has given me big support, everybody
:51:00. > :51:05.pushed me. It is my second home! Can you say which of the three victories
:51:06. > :51:23.was the most important for you? The sprint. It is the most important
:51:24. > :51:29.event. And the most needful event. Everybody says, if you win the
:51:30. > :51:33.sprint, you are the best. I beat the world champion from last year. It is
:51:34. > :51:39.a beautiful final. Do not if -- I do not know if they
:51:40. > :51:44.do the man of the match, but he would win it for the men, and
:51:45. > :51:48.Kristina Vogel for the women, three gold medals each. Completely
:51:49. > :51:54.dominant, both of them, Francois Pervis looking unbeatable. When you
:51:55. > :51:59.get to an event, there is a lot of anxiety, you do not know how you are
:52:00. > :52:03.going to go, but you get a good feel for it as soon as you arrive, you
:52:04. > :52:11.start training, and his results have been amazing. He is on point, and
:52:12. > :52:15.his confidence is through the roof. Him and Kristina Vogel, tactics
:52:16. > :52:18.become secondary. You are that confident, you can even make small
:52:19. > :52:25.mistakes, you believe in yourself so much. It is great to see the
:52:26. > :52:28.excitement in his face, he was so happy, all that hard work has paid
:52:29. > :52:34.off, he will remember that for the rest of his life. We have already
:52:35. > :52:40.heard from Shane Sutton, but what about the BBC voice of wisdom, Chris
:52:41. > :52:45.Boardman? The sun has dipped down here,
:52:46. > :52:51.drawing the World Championships to a close, but it is time to reflect on
:52:52. > :52:55.Great Britain's performance, five medals, from the women's side, the
:52:56. > :53:03.worst performance from Great Britain's men since 1998. I was
:53:04. > :53:08.trying to cut back myself, I was there in 1998. It is a long time,
:53:09. > :53:13.they have set the bar so high, but by anybody's standards, it is very
:53:14. > :53:17.disappointing, at their form is good. They are just behind the curve
:53:18. > :53:23.in every event. I would be concerned. That is the biggest
:53:24. > :53:29.worry. We cannot work out what caused the problem. A review would
:53:30. > :53:34.take place, what would you say? You have got to start with the process
:53:35. > :53:38.of looking back, week by week, have you got here, what are the
:53:39. > :53:47.differences, what have we done this year, try to tease it out. Also, the
:53:48. > :53:53.competition was so strong, we saw world's best times set at sea level,
:53:54. > :53:58.so it was not easy. Looking at the individual performances, the pursuit
:53:59. > :54:02.team were not where they wanted to be at Christmas, it was always going
:54:03. > :54:08.to be tough, what did you make of Jason Kenny? Not massively behind
:54:09. > :54:10.the curve, he was there or thereabouts, but when you are
:54:11. > :54:18.talking about half the bike length nicking the difference, Francois
:54:19. > :54:22.Pervis was in phenomenal form, and he kept it up all the way through,
:54:23. > :54:28.he was super strong. And Kristina Vogel armour they dominated. Let's
:54:29. > :54:35.look at Laura Trott, her silver medal today. She fought hard, just
:54:36. > :54:40.missing a bit of edge, up against the super-strong Sarah Hammer. She
:54:41. > :54:46.still managed to get a silver medal. Another positive, Katie Archibald
:54:47. > :54:51.coming away with a rainbow Jersey. There were raised eyebrows when
:54:52. > :54:57.Danny King was not in the team. You put in a youngster like that, in the
:54:58. > :55:01.final, a big scrap, and she threw in a long term, she was fantastic.
:55:02. > :55:07.Everybody will analyse the performances, what has been the
:55:08. > :55:11.highlight? The Colombian victory in the points race, that has got to be
:55:12. > :55:16.it for me, it was great for the crowd, good for cycling, it was a
:55:17. > :55:21.great spectacle. It looked as though it might lift the roof of! It would
:55:22. > :55:26.not take too much! Chris Boardman has been part of
:55:27. > :55:30.British cycling for many years, he was part of the technology
:55:31. > :55:34.innovation that has been so important, so if he says he is
:55:35. > :55:39.concerned about the men, there is reason for concern. I was not
:55:40. > :55:46.concerned until he said it! Whether he was just trying to make good TV
:55:47. > :55:49.or not, I do not know. Jason has now assumed the role that Chris had,
:55:50. > :55:52.they will be doing a lot of research, seeing what new
:55:53. > :55:58.innovations are coming up over the next few years. Like I mentioned
:55:59. > :56:01.earlier, some of the equipment they used at the Olympics is not allowed
:56:02. > :56:07.at the regular World Championships, which sounds absurd, but they keep
:56:08. > :56:13.that equipment pristine for every four years. Like Chris said, they
:56:14. > :56:18.are not 1 million miles away, it is not like they have had a disastrous
:56:19. > :56:25.Championships. The medal count is not what they wanted, but again, we
:56:26. > :56:34.are talking tiny things across the board. You talked about how the
:56:35. > :56:38.Americans look at the Brits, is it a case of the Brits not being behind,
:56:39. > :56:43.but everybody else having caught up, and it is like going back to the
:56:44. > :56:48.drawing board, so we have to be better again? Had you keep
:56:49. > :56:56.improving? Exactly, everybody charging towards Britain, they have
:56:57. > :56:59.now passed Britain, and now Britain are scratching their heads,
:57:00. > :57:04.thinking, what have we done wrong? In terms of performance, and the
:57:05. > :57:10.benchmarks in terms of time and data, maybe they all where they want
:57:11. > :57:16.to be, but everybody else has stepped it up. But I would rather be
:57:17. > :57:22.the underdog and scratching my head, tried to build motivation and
:57:23. > :57:26.passion and drive, to get what we want in Rio de Janeiro. The best
:57:27. > :57:32.performance from the Brits, you picked out Joanna Russell. She is
:57:33. > :57:40.just like Francois Pervis, she had a fantastic Championships. She is at
:57:41. > :57:47.the peak of her career. Seeing the excitement on her face, it is great
:57:48. > :57:50.to see, and hopefully she does not get pulled down to much by everybody
:57:51. > :57:56.else and the negative experience of the event. Thank you, safe journey
:57:57. > :58:02.back to America, we are jealous of you going to the Sunshine! We are
:58:03. > :58:12.back again next weekend, with more action from a bank track, but no
:58:13. > :58:16.wheels this time. There is a 35 strong British team, with plenty of
:58:17. > :58:23.new faces, and some old ones to look out for. Coverage continues
:58:24. > :58:26.throughout the weekend. The bare statistics do not make great reading
:58:27. > :58:31.from a British perspective, the worst championships in a decade,
:58:32. > :58:36.since 2004, and the men drawing a blank on the medal table. But with
:58:37. > :58:40.two and a half years to go until the Olympics, if you needed a wake-up
:58:41. > :59:01.call, this is the right time for it to happen. Goodbye.
:59:02. > :59:03.It is gold! Sendshapes no riding! World champion!
