:00:37. > :00:42.Hello and welcome to Good Friday coverage of the third day of the
:00:43. > :00:45.World Track Cycling Championships in Hong Kong. Two bronze medals so far
:00:46. > :00:50.for a British team that is missing the majority of its experienced
:00:51. > :00:51.gold-diggers, including the record-breaking woman who for the
:00:52. > :01:02.last six years has brought personality to the team.
:01:03. > :01:08.Representing Great Britain, Laura Trott.
:01:09. > :01:19.I like winning, I like the feeling. She is full of confidence. Look at
:01:20. > :01:25.us! Laura Trott is on fire. I can't
:01:26. > :01:33.believe it, I feel dead in emotional right now. This is a stupendous ride
:01:34. > :01:39.from Laura Trott. Gold for Laura Trott, on top of the world. What a
:01:40. > :01:46.star, another world record. It is pretty amazing! So many gold medals.
:01:47. > :01:50.It is gold for Laura Trott. She is a winner.
:01:51. > :01:56.And I'm done later to say she's here in the studio with us, Laura Kenney
:01:57. > :02:03.is here alongside Sir Chris Hoy and Joe Shand. Very weird for you it
:02:04. > :02:07.must be, when was the last time you missed the World Championships?
:02:08. > :02:12.2011, I have done it every year since I became a first-year senior.
:02:13. > :02:19.It is a bit weird, actually. Part of me wanted this feeling, because it
:02:20. > :02:23.is hard you go through such a period of time where it is all dedicated to
:02:24. > :02:27.this, so to step away, I feel like I should be there, but part of me
:02:28. > :02:33.didn't want to be, and I want to be back. But not in your current state.
:02:34. > :02:39.But it is a joyful one, you are expecting your first child. How was
:02:40. > :02:44.it all going? All smooth so far, only one bite of sickness. It is
:02:45. > :02:51.easier growing baby then riding a bike! And are you still keeping your
:02:52. > :02:56.fitness up? I am. I carried on riding at the start, going to the
:02:57. > :03:01.gym as normal, and then ever since the three-month period, we tailed it
:03:02. > :03:06.back, so everything has been about 90%, and my coach Paul has been
:03:07. > :03:10.really helpful with it. I still go to the gym and ride my bike in the
:03:11. > :03:16.garage. And what about Jason, what is he doing? Sat on the sofa,
:03:17. > :03:20.probably watching! No, he is having six months to decide what he wants
:03:21. > :03:30.to do, whether to carry on or to retire like Joanna. So he might
:03:31. > :03:35.retire, is that what you are saying? I don't really know. As athletes,
:03:36. > :03:39.you always want to carry on, you always want to go to the next thing.
:03:40. > :03:47.He has drawn level with Sir Chris Hoy. All he needs is one more metal!
:03:48. > :03:51.A little bronze would do it. You have been through it, it is
:03:52. > :03:55.difficult. As athletes, you become this self absorbed person, and
:03:56. > :04:01.everything is just about you, and there are bigger things in life than
:04:02. > :04:06.that. Once the baby comes along, he will be desperate to go to training
:04:07. > :04:09.camp to get some sleep! We are delighted to have you with us,
:04:10. > :04:16.because we know how much you will bring to the programme. But we have
:04:17. > :04:21.a lot to look forward to, Jo, including your former team-mate,
:04:22. > :04:27.Katie Archibald. She has got a big chance here to win a gold medal. She
:04:28. > :04:34.has, she has two events in Hong Kong, the UCI have completely
:04:35. > :04:41.overhauled the event, so it is new for ever but e-mail. She is
:04:42. > :04:48.currently in the lead, fingers crossed for a gold medal and rainbow
:04:49. > :04:52.jersey in that. And the individual pursuit tomorrow, it is easier to
:04:53. > :04:57.train for, just you against the clock really, so most of her
:04:58. > :05:02.training has been around that, so if she could win the on the today, that
:05:03. > :05:10.would be a huge boost, we have medals so far, but we haven't quite
:05:11. > :05:15.won that gold. Today we have the culmination of the women's Sprint,
:05:16. > :05:22.exciting for the home fans in Hong Kong, because they have a favourite
:05:23. > :05:26.who is racing against the Olympic champion in Vogel. And what is the
:05:27. > :05:30.feedback from the team about conditions? I'm sure they are
:05:31. > :05:37.texting you. Is ever be happy with the velodrome and up? I think so. We
:05:38. > :05:46.have seen some pretty fast times. It is not slow in there. And it should
:05:47. > :05:50.be well supported. So let's have a look at what is coming up on today's
:05:51. > :06:01.programme. Katie Archibald and she tries to win
:06:02. > :06:05.her first individual world title. And the Hong Kong rider could raise
:06:06. > :06:11.the roof of the Velodrome, she is in the semifinals of the sprint. Andy
:06:12. > :06:15.Tennant and Matt Bostock of Great Britain didn't make it through, but
:06:16. > :06:22.we will see the medals decided in the men's individual pursuit. And
:06:23. > :06:26.Mark Stewart will need a combination of stamina and sprinting ability for
:06:27. > :06:31.the points race, it is 40 kilometres , Sprints every ten laps. He will be
:06:32. > :06:37.looking even more exhausted than that. So, Katie Archibald, is this
:06:38. > :06:43.her big chance? With Laura here in the studio, a place in the beer was
:06:44. > :06:49.available, she has taken it -- a place in the omnium was available.
:06:50. > :06:57.And the omnium, that is a different thing for you. Yes, the conversation
:06:58. > :07:02.we are going to is, is that because Laura is having a baby? I can't seem
:07:03. > :07:06.to avoid that combination, so yes, I guess it is a fairly obvious truth
:07:07. > :07:09.that she is Olympic champion and world champion, and you have to
:07:10. > :07:14.expect that if she had continued training, that she would have the
:07:15. > :07:20.form to make that selection. But as she is not here, there is still a
:07:21. > :07:24.huge amount of competition with the riders that are looking to step
:07:25. > :07:29.through, so it is not just myself. I became European omnium champion,
:07:30. > :07:36.then Emily Kay went into the lead in the World Cup series, Emily Nelson
:07:37. > :07:46.was second at a World Cup omnium also, Elinor Barker didn't ride any
:07:47. > :07:52.of the internationals, but she is a formidable rider. There is a big
:07:53. > :07:58.squad. And I feel quite privileged to have this chance to have this
:07:59. > :08:01.omnium spot. I want to be competitive, and I think the next
:08:02. > :08:05.three years, you will see most riders on this programme wanting to
:08:06. > :08:11.do the same. She is a big personality, isn't she? Do you know
:08:12. > :08:16.her well? How will she handle this? I think she will handle it well.
:08:17. > :08:20.Everybody gets nervous, but Katie is one of the best really raising her
:08:21. > :08:23.game on race day. Some riders, the nerves get to them and they have a
:08:24. > :08:26.poorer performance than training, but she is one of the best I have
:08:27. > :08:31.ever met it using that adrenaline to her advantage and going even quicker
:08:32. > :08:36.on racing then we have seen in training. Consistently she has
:08:37. > :08:40.performed well on the big stage. I guess for her the biggest
:08:41. > :08:42.differences this is completely alone, she has never had an
:08:43. > :08:47.individual World Championship medal before, of any colour. She has been
:08:48. > :08:50.world champion in the team pursuit, so different for her being up there
:08:51. > :08:54.on her own, but she does tend to use the adrenaline to her advantage. And
:08:55. > :09:02.she has been in touch with you this morning, Laura? I congratulated her
:09:03. > :09:05.on that, and she says she can't believe how hard it feels, but she
:09:06. > :09:09.says everybody else is finding it harder than her. I don't know
:09:10. > :09:13.anybody who can hurt themselves as much as she can, when your legs
:09:14. > :09:17.screaming to stop, she can just keep going and going, it doesn't matter
:09:18. > :09:21.how much pain she is in, and that is what makes her so different
:09:22. > :09:25.everybody else. The first two events, she looked in a class of her
:09:26. > :09:31.own, and she has put eight points between her and second already, so
:09:32. > :09:36.that will help. Chris, you have been in that position, actually watching
:09:37. > :09:41.Jason, somebody else stepping into what was your event, and you handled
:09:42. > :09:45.it by being very proud of him. I have retired by that point so it was
:09:46. > :09:48.easier for me to be happy for him. It is difficult when you are still
:09:49. > :09:53.competing and you watch your team-mate or rivals compete when you
:09:54. > :09:56.are not there, I had a crash in 2009, Mr World Championships and had
:09:57. > :09:59.to watch from home, and that was tough on but again it was an
:10:00. > :10:07.unforced thing, I didn't choose to miss the worlds, but it will fuel
:10:08. > :10:13.the fire for Laura. It might not! I wouldn't have won a gold medal in
:10:14. > :10:16.London without Jason within the team, that upward pressure, that
:10:17. > :10:21.competition, so hopefully it will be that positive thing for the women's
:10:22. > :10:25.team, and whoever gets the slot in Tokyo, they will win the gold medal.
:10:26. > :10:30.Laura for the moment is the reigning world champion in the omnium, she
:10:31. > :10:33.has won it twice and two Olympic gold medals, but it is an event that
:10:34. > :10:39.has changed, and Chris Boardman explains the new format.
:10:40. > :10:42.In a bid to improve the competition and make more spectator friendly
:10:43. > :10:48.racing, the UCI brought in a raft of changes to the track programme after
:10:49. > :10:54.Rio, and no event was effected more than the omnium. Since 2007, it has
:10:55. > :10:57.undergone almost annual tinkering, but the most recent alterations are
:10:58. > :11:03.profound. All timed events have been removed. In Rio, it took two days,
:11:04. > :11:09.six events, now it is just four and is run-in a single day. Gone are the
:11:10. > :11:13.pursuit, flying lap and time trial, and in comes the temporaries to sit
:11:14. > :11:20.alongside scratch and elimination. The tempo race used to be a fun
:11:21. > :11:24.filler event for kids at local track meetings. Now it has replaced events
:11:25. > :11:27.with over 100 years of Olympic history, all in an attempt to give
:11:28. > :11:31.the crowd something to cheer about. That is why it was originally
:11:32. > :11:35.popular, it is like a points race of people in a hurry. From the sixth
:11:36. > :11:42.lap, the riders sprint for a single point the Passover Wehrlein, so it
:11:43. > :11:44.is a brutal trial of endurance, but mercifully short, just ten
:11:45. > :11:56.kilometres for the man and 7.5 for the women. -- at every point where
:11:57. > :12:00.they pass over the line. There are still double points on offer for the
:12:01. > :12:03.final sprint. The winner of the Omnium is the rider who has
:12:04. > :12:07.accumulated the most points over the course of the day. But do the
:12:08. > :12:13.changes work? It is all about creating spectator friendly racing,
:12:14. > :12:17.so you can be the judge. We are going to see live coverage of
:12:18. > :12:21.the elimination race and points race, the final two events in the
:12:22. > :12:25.omnium, but let's bring you up-to-date with Katie Archibald so
:12:26. > :12:27.far. This was the scratch race, and she is well positioned towards the
:12:28. > :12:35.front, just on the outside as she makes her move, and she executed it
:12:36. > :12:39.to perfection. She did. Sarah Hammer loves to lead out early, and Katie
:12:40. > :12:44.was waiting for her to run out of gas. As you can see, with one lap to
:12:45. > :12:48.go, she finds that line, and you know that there is no way anybody is
:12:49. > :12:53.going to come around her at that point because she has the shortest
:12:54. > :12:56.line and the best legs out there. Chasing her is Australian Amy Cure.
:12:57. > :13:04.She has been points race champion in the past, so she will be one to
:13:05. > :13:08.watch in the points race, but Katie already has an 8-point gap, so that
:13:09. > :13:11.is a lot of points, so you would assume that she would lose that.
:13:12. > :13:20.Let's look at the point standing after the scratch race. Katie out in
:13:21. > :13:25.front with 40, just two point the gap then. Keep an eye on Sarah
:13:26. > :13:30.Hammer, currently seven. So, the tempo race, a new addition to the
:13:31. > :13:38.omnium. After the first four lapse, they spread every lap.
:13:39. > :13:47.COMMENTATOR: Rolling start for the tempo race, the second event of four
:13:48. > :13:53.in the much changed women's omnium, it must be said. Katie Archibald
:13:54. > :13:59.having won the first race, the scratch race. You can see her in the
:14:00. > :14:03.middle of your picture with the union flag on her helmet. They come
:14:04. > :14:05.around in a group, and this will make the start of the race proper.
:14:06. > :14:15.Away we go. They will be sprinting for a single
:14:16. > :14:19.point every lap, so the prizes are not well spread around, making that
:14:20. > :14:23.ticks difficult to judge, because there is something on offer which
:14:24. > :14:29.will keep the pace high, but we will see a lot of attacking. Only 7.5
:14:30. > :14:35.kilometres, so a brutal test of endurance. It has changed the
:14:36. > :14:40.character of the Omnium because it is a multitude of bunch races now.
:14:41. > :14:44.It is fascinating to watch, but I'm not quite sure it has discovered its
:14:45. > :14:50.identity yet. It used to be the end Europe's rider so you had all the
:14:51. > :14:54.endurance events represented under this one umbrella title of omnium,
:14:55. > :14:57.but then they took out the timed events, so is it now the best bunch
:14:58. > :15:02.race rider? It is struggling to find that identity yet. Katie Archibald
:15:03. > :15:10.already on the front, just keeping her eye on things. Excellent start
:15:11. > :15:14.to the competition for Katie Archibald moving through on the
:15:15. > :15:19.inside, number 32, Anita Stenberg from Norway, who swept the board
:15:20. > :15:28.last year winning a magnificent seven titles. The first acceleration
:15:29. > :15:34.of the race comes from Tatiana Concerto of Ukraine, in good form
:15:35. > :15:38.coming into the championships. She won the scratch race in Los Angeles
:15:39. > :15:55.earlier this year. And the first sprint is coming up.
:15:56. > :16:02.The first point is collected by Stenberg of Norway.
:16:03. > :16:08.You cannot go for them all, you have to choose which sprints to go for.
:16:09. > :16:11.The ideal is the breakaway but no riders will work well in a breakaway
:16:12. > :16:20.because only the first rider over the line gets the point. The second
:16:21. > :16:24.point goes to Tetyana Klimchenko. Katie Archibald is leading the rest
:16:25. > :16:29.of the field up to those three who are at the front. She may well
:16:30. > :16:33.decide to keep going around the outside. She is right at the top of
:16:34. > :16:41.the track, Pavlendova collecting the third point of this race. But here
:16:42. > :16:46.comes Katie Archibald of Great Britain. She is on the board here.
:16:47. > :16:50.She's taking it to and she kept that pressure on the pedals as she got
:16:51. > :16:53.over the line. She wants to see if she can force a breakaway to take
:16:54. > :16:59.some points from a much smaller group which she is doing at the
:17:00. > :17:04.moment. They have just got to get stuck in. When you are at the front
:17:05. > :17:09.of the race with somebody like Kirsten Wild who got the point you
:17:10. > :17:12.are in good, swift company. Daria Pikulik from Poland is up there in
:17:13. > :17:17.the red and white and Italy on the front at this moment in time Ellie
:17:18. > :17:21.said Sarno, who is the world junior road race champion. Sarah Hammer
:17:22. > :17:29.trying to get back on terms, usually so consistent in this event. But
:17:30. > :17:35.already suffered a blow, seventh place in the opening round, so she
:17:36. > :17:42.is already on the back foot. She is, she is up against it but so many
:17:43. > :17:46.points still to play for but. Archibald is leading the event, the
:17:47. > :17:52.sprints are well spread around at the moment. Stephany Road of Canada
:17:53. > :17:59.going across the line -- Stephanie Roorda. Nonstop action in this tempo
:18:00. > :18:03.race, 18 laps to go. Hammer on the front having chased across the front
:18:04. > :18:07.of the group but no points for that. Katie Archibald again coming to the
:18:08. > :18:12.front, she has a look over her shoulder. She is going to sit this
:18:13. > :18:19.one out. She is already looking for some more points. Ruud equalling her
:18:20. > :18:23.on two points. Having claimed points she is going to take the point for
:18:24. > :18:27.the third lap in a row, Stephanie Roorda. Following her through in
:18:28. > :18:31.second place Yumi Kajihara of Japan. Only the first rider who gets a
:18:32. > :18:35.point. Sarah Hammer has decided it's time to show her face at the front.
:18:36. > :18:39.She wants to get on the board here and it looks as if she will collect
:18:40. > :18:46.a point. Kirsten Wild is following her, Amy Cure in the wheel tracks of
:18:47. > :18:50.the Dutch woman and right behind Amy Cure is Archibald. Some of the big
:18:51. > :18:53.hitters coming to the front. Tactically that worked out well for
:18:54. > :18:58.Katie Archibald because Sarah Hammer went very hard to get this point but
:18:59. > :19:02.she followed the wheels and her main competitor has done the chasing show
:19:03. > :19:06.Dummett so she should be set up to counter and sure enough she rides
:19:07. > :19:11.over the top and cruises to the front. Look at that for impressive
:19:12. > :19:17.acceleration from Katie Archibald clear of Amy Cure and Archibald is
:19:18. > :19:23.moving up the track and has a little look around. Good speed in her legs.
:19:24. > :19:28.She settles down once more. It will get messy now because they are going
:19:29. > :19:31.to catch the main peloton and get stuck in traffic. So they will need
:19:32. > :19:34.to get back to the front to start scoring. If you already have the
:19:35. > :19:38.highest points, being stuck at the back suits you well because everyone
:19:39. > :19:42.is neutralised. She just collected a point without riding flat out to get
:19:43. > :19:47.it, she had time to have a look around and now Amy Cure is therefore
:19:48. > :19:50.company. They are not far away from joining on the back-end of the field
:19:51. > :19:56.having lapped vast majority of those in the race. They have swung up now,
:19:57. > :19:58.and this is where it becomes tactical because Amy Cure was
:19:59. > :20:03.backpedalling because she didn't want to catch the bunch and wanted
:20:04. > :20:06.the point. Now both of them, unless they go straight back to the front,
:20:07. > :20:11.which is exactly what has just happened, they stop scoring, so
:20:12. > :20:15.Archibald in fantastic form. She has just pinched another point. What a
:20:16. > :20:23.gift, everybody moved out of the way and she rolled underneath and took
:20:24. > :20:28.the point. And gaining a lap. Amy Cure goes to the front now, with
:20:29. > :20:35.nine laps remaining. Katie Archibald, in an excellent position,
:20:36. > :20:39.performing superbly. Tactically this may be a mistake. Kew rolled off the
:20:40. > :20:43.front on her own, Katie Archibald was second and chose to swing up
:20:44. > :20:50.rather than chase and with the gap so slender now with just two points
:20:51. > :20:54.between them, that could be a brave move by Kew, but maybe she is
:20:55. > :21:00.starting to feel those constant Sprint efforts now. Amy Cure riding
:21:01. > :21:04.at the front and being chased by Lotte Kopecky from Belgium Hill is
:21:05. > :21:11.just on the wheel of Lydia Boyland from Ireland. A little gap back to
:21:12. > :21:21.Pikulik from Poland and just behind Roxane Fournier from France. Katie
:21:22. > :21:24.Archibald in the middle of the pack. Amy Cure collecting another point,
:21:25. > :21:32.Lydia Boyland going to the front now, the National road race champion
:21:33. > :21:36.for Ireland in 2015 and 16. They are spread all over the track now,
:21:37. > :21:45.aren't they? The last half dozen laps, point for Lydia Boyland.
:21:46. > :21:52.She is going to take another one as well. She hasn't got the
:21:53. > :21:55.all-important lap so she is 20 points trailing so she may be
:21:56. > :22:00.grabbing some points but there is not enough laps left to do in this
:22:01. > :22:05.race, you would have to bridge with the main peloton. I tell you what,
:22:06. > :22:09.she is only half a lap behind. Superb effort from Lydia Boyland.
:22:10. > :22:13.She is helping Katie Archibald because there is only a single point
:22:14. > :22:18.over the line she is sucking them up, Katie Archibald on 24 point
:22:19. > :22:20.stays in the lead and Boyland is neutralising the race. Amy Cure
:22:21. > :22:25.keeps on coming over the line in second or third place and is not
:22:26. > :22:29.collecting the points. Lydia Boyland has time to look across to see where
:22:30. > :22:34.everyone else is, half a lap up of the vast majority of riders, maybe a
:22:35. > :22:38.little more than that. The chasers are the ones we are interested in,
:22:39. > :22:41.Amy Cure desperately trying to get pace, frustratingly stuck in no
:22:42. > :22:48.man's land. Archibald has played a tactical blinder. I think she Oezbek
:22:49. > :22:55.Boyland of beer after this. -- she owes Boyland Mbia. It has worked out
:22:56. > :23:03.superbly well. Lydia Boyland leads the way. Finding the going a little
:23:04. > :23:06.tough and starting to real her in a little but she should have enough
:23:07. > :23:10.speed to stay away but there might not be much in it. Amy Cure leads
:23:11. > :23:15.the chase and Katie Archibald, having a lap or two just to regroup
:23:16. > :23:20.buzz around the outside shoulder to shoulder with the Australian. But
:23:21. > :23:24.Katie Archibald pulls away now, Lydia Boyland coming up towards the
:23:25. > :23:29.line, that's the front of the race, great ride by Lydia Boyland, Katie
:23:30. > :23:33.Archibald second over the line, and she continues to looked dominant
:23:34. > :23:39.here in the women's omnium with two events of the four completed.
:23:40. > :23:45.Superbly written, and she has ridden a lot of omniums in the winter in
:23:46. > :23:49.the 60 events, so she has focused on this on the timed events to be a
:23:50. > :23:56.role to look after the individual racing for a change and boy is it
:23:57. > :24:07.paying off. Grey ride from Katie Archibald and that does keep her out
:24:08. > :24:12.in front. 18, 8-point gap to Amy Cure, Lydia Boyland by winning that
:24:13. > :24:16.comes in tenth. When you are in the midst of the omnium how much are you
:24:17. > :24:19.points watching and how much opponent watching? When you get to
:24:20. > :24:24.the points race it is all about points and you want to keep the
:24:25. > :24:27.people around you, if you are winning, the top four, you always
:24:28. > :24:33.keeping an eye on them because by that point, by the end, they are
:24:34. > :24:37.your main rivals. Katie might go into it with 20 points over the
:24:38. > :24:41.person in faith which is a lap and that is quite a lot of points for
:24:42. > :24:45.somebody to try and make back -- in fifth place. You are opponent
:24:46. > :24:49.watching but you must make sure the people around you are not scoring.
:24:50. > :24:55.Do you think that is a pretty impressive performance from her so
:24:56. > :25:02.far? Forshaw. We are not going too far saying she has a medal chance?
:25:03. > :25:05.She has won two out of two so far. She looks phenomenal, she looks like
:25:06. > :25:09.she is in a league of her own. She looks in charge of the race, she
:25:10. > :25:13.dictates when she wants to go for a sprint and she gets it and when she
:25:14. > :25:17.wants some body else to get it she lets it happen. Watching it it looks
:25:18. > :25:21.like she is having it all her own way. A lot of that is majority of
:25:22. > :25:24.mind as well as physical ability. A lot of physical ability, she
:25:25. > :25:28.obviously has good legs, she can go when she wants to but she is a good
:25:29. > :25:32.race and raises her game on race day and she loves a bike race against
:25:33. > :25:39.other people. She will always raise her game when there are opponents
:25:40. > :25:42.side-by-side. She's a example of stomach because she has had injuries
:25:43. > :25:46.caused by motorbike accidents and she has got back to fitness and is
:25:47. > :25:51.right back at the top of her game. December 2015 she had a motorbike
:25:52. > :25:54.accident giving her a bad knee injury and fractured elbow taking
:25:55. > :25:58.her out of the World Championships 2016 in London which was not a great
:25:59. > :26:03.place for her to be a few months out from the games but she had done good
:26:04. > :26:06.work with her rehab and came back for the Olympics and performed
:26:07. > :26:11.fantastically and we won. While everybody else took a good long
:26:12. > :26:14.post-Olympic break for her she had already have the unforced rest the
:26:15. > :26:18.previous winter. She had a small break but she was quite keen to get
:26:19. > :26:22.racing as soon as possible and that has shown this season how well she
:26:23. > :26:30.has been doing. Glasgow back in November she crashed and broke her
:26:31. > :26:34.wrist there. She still won. With a broken wrist! She is incredible,
:26:35. > :26:39.amazing. Katie Archibald could win a gold medal for Great Britain today,
:26:40. > :26:42.two races to come in the omnium, the elimination and the points race to
:26:43. > :26:46.finish but no medals for Callum Skinner, the Olympic silver
:26:47. > :26:50.medallist. He went out this morning in the individual sprint, Chris. He
:26:51. > :26:56.went out in the second round to Max Niederlag, the German. It wasn't a
:26:57. > :27:01.massive surprise in that Niederlag did a phenomenal ride in the last 16
:27:02. > :27:06.and he lined up Callum really well and got the slipstream and it was a
:27:07. > :27:11.pretty straightforward ride, unfortunately. For Callum it was an
:27:12. > :27:16.amazing games in Rio to over perform and step up and produce that ride in
:27:17. > :27:19.the team sprint and get silver medal behind Jason, it was an amazing ride
:27:20. > :27:23.and must have been hard to get back into training. Clearly he wants to
:27:24. > :27:27.be here but he will be disappointed with that. It is the first step
:27:28. > :27:32.towards Tokyo. That's it, the four-year cycle is not a straight
:27:33. > :27:35.line, it's very much about up and downs. Yes, and a lot of it is
:27:36. > :27:38.psychological too, not just physical. Physically it's not as if
:27:39. > :27:42.these guys are sitting around with their feet on the sofa, well, maybe
:27:43. > :27:48.Jason is but they train hard day in and day out even though they are not
:27:49. > :27:51.competing at the highest level. Psychologically, to focus and put
:27:52. > :27:56.every bit of effort in everyday towards this one race all the time
:27:57. > :28:00.for four years it can be quite draining. For Callum he will be
:28:01. > :28:05.disappointed but looking to the future. Let's hear his reaction now.
:28:06. > :28:12.A bit disappointing in the sprint, take us through your performance. I
:28:13. > :28:16.was on for 9.9 with qualification so that was what we had done in
:28:17. > :28:20.training. You tend to look to gain a bit from what you are doing in
:28:21. > :28:26.training but we didn't find that today. It was ballpark where we were
:28:27. > :28:29.but the field were three or four tenths ahead of that pace which
:28:30. > :28:33.makes it difficult when you come up against the second-fastest steed,
:28:34. > :28:38.there is only so much you can do. Max put in a and has gone on.
:28:39. > :28:41.It is frustrating because you are up against one of the very best who is
:28:42. > :28:48.really on form at the moment in Hong Kong. It is just a reflection of
:28:49. > :28:53.where we are. Having had my usual preparation coming into this I had a
:28:54. > :28:58.solid month off after the games and a month of kind of semi-training and
:28:59. > :29:01.got focused back on track in January, so comparing that to normal
:29:02. > :29:06.preparation, 12 months versus three or four. I can't be too
:29:07. > :29:10.disappointed. It's just a reflection of where we are and gives us
:29:11. > :29:14.something to build on for next year. You are a marked man now, you come
:29:15. > :29:19.into this with a big reputation of the back of the Olympics, before you
:29:20. > :29:22.could have slightly gone under the radar. Well, yeah, I don't know how
:29:23. > :29:28.to answer that, I'm still coming to terms with that myself. There is a
:29:29. > :29:35.shift in the expectation. It has gone from myself trying to do the
:29:36. > :29:40.best and fill someone's shoes for man three and having decent success
:29:41. > :29:44.at Rio and now the pressure shifts. Trying to fill the boots of Chris,
:29:45. > :29:47.too trying to make a name for myself and continuing to get good results.
:29:48. > :29:51.It is a bit of a shift of the pressure but I would say it moving
:29:52. > :29:56.forward next year we just keep building. Some great young talent in
:29:57. > :29:59.the British team, particularly the team sprint, they have done ever so
:30:00. > :30:06.well. They have and it has been exciting to watch. We didn't expect
:30:07. > :30:10.to be under pressure that quickly. I think it is good for the team. I
:30:11. > :30:19.have always had that internal competition with man three but man
:30:20. > :30:23.one end two has been lacking a bit. Looking ahead to the Gold Coast and
:30:24. > :30:28.Commonwealth Games now for you. Yes, that is exciting, started chatting
:30:29. > :30:31.to Gary Coleman, the head coach of Scotland, and got my eye on that.
:30:32. > :30:36.That is when we should really start being back to this similar place we
:30:37. > :30:44.were before and we will look to build from there so it is exciting.
:30:45. > :30:49.So, out of the men's individual sprint is Callum Skinner, that going
:30:50. > :30:57.through is Ryan Owens. A chance for him maybe to make Ake? Only
:30:58. > :31:06.qualified with 9.8, a really solid ride up against the Canadian. Hugo
:31:07. > :31:12.lined him up quite well, but Ryan was just too strong. You can see how
:31:13. > :31:17.happy he is to make it into the final eight, to do that at your
:31:18. > :31:25.first senior World Championships is a big deal. He will take positivity
:31:26. > :31:31.from this ride. He has a difficult draw in the court finals. Two tense
:31:32. > :31:37.is a big margin, but it is not unsurmountable, so fingers crossed
:31:38. > :31:48.he can think about how he can try to overtake him. So that becomes really
:31:49. > :31:51.tactical? The bigger the gap in terms of your top speed, the less
:31:52. > :31:56.chance you have of beating the other person, but he is canny, he has
:31:57. > :32:06.great acceleration, and if he can ride to his strength is and not let
:32:07. > :32:13.Niderlag dictate, he could do it. And the men's points race is going
:32:14. > :32:17.right now, and Mark Stewart is involved. They have to sprint every
:32:18. > :32:25.few laps, and Cameron Meyer of Australia is also in this race.
:32:26. > :32:28.Those are the standings, and Simon Brotherton and Chris Boardman can
:32:29. > :32:31.tell us more about what is happening.
:32:32. > :32:41.COMMENTATOR: 98 laps to go, and this race is well and truly under way.
:32:42. > :32:46.Mark Stewart with six points on the board, and we have a rider from Hong
:32:47. > :32:50.Kong having a go off the front of the peloton at the moment, the
:32:51. > :33:00.five-time Asian champion, and that really has got the crowd animated
:33:01. > :33:07.here inside this stadium, as Mark Stewart leads them around, before
:33:08. > :33:10.moving up to the top of the track, three times world champion in the
:33:11. > :33:18.points race, and a man that everybody else will be keep an eye
:33:19. > :33:30.on. Mark Stewart is in fourth at the moment. Some big names out there in
:33:31. > :33:35.this points race, and it is really starting to hot up, and it is
:33:36. > :33:40.interesting to note that as it starts to split, Mark Stewart is at
:33:41. > :33:44.the front-end the race again. It was him that injected the pace that
:33:45. > :33:50.caused the split. The other riders have sensed the opportunity. It has
:33:51. > :33:55.been frantic action from the start, one of the fastest starts I think I
:33:56. > :33:59.have ever seen. He was leading at one point, got caught out by a
:34:00. > :34:08.counterattack but has recovered now and is really getting stuck in. . He
:34:09. > :34:16.hasn't scored for a little while, but is involved at the front.
:34:17. > :34:22.Another racer there at the front, from the Czech Republic. One lap to
:34:23. > :34:32.go, and surely he will get some points. Regan Gough in the Black of
:34:33. > :34:36.New Zealand tries to come around on the British rider's shoulder, and he
:34:37. > :34:43.does so. Stewart will get two points there. It is still fairly close at
:34:44. > :34:47.the top, a lot of riders in contention, and the move has just
:34:48. > :34:51.got away now. This is very serious, they kept the pressure on, and it is
:34:52. > :34:59.a good number, everybody gets a reward if they take a lap. And if
:35:00. > :35:03.they can hang onto Cameron Meyer's coat-tails, he is in a really good
:35:04. > :35:08.place in deed, because I think he is the man to beat in this field, and
:35:09. > :35:16.Regan Gough has already shown that he is in good form. And those three
:35:17. > :35:20.are away, and I think some of the other more experienced riders in the
:35:21. > :35:23.field realise they need to get their skates on and try to bring them back
:35:24. > :35:31.in. It is the poll who really got caught out. He is trying to get back
:35:32. > :35:35.on terms, he has seconds to do it. And I think they will, actually. I
:35:36. > :35:39.thought this move was going to go because you are committed when the
:35:40. > :35:43.ride just three of you. Nicolas Larsen from Denmark in the red and
:35:44. > :35:56.white leads the chase. Three are about to become for. Cloudier off,
:35:57. > :36:01.Larsson has got scoring in bits and bobs so far. We are slowly winding
:36:02. > :36:05.it up towards the next sprint. They split the field almost in half an
:36:06. > :36:09.hour, and I think it will possibly come back together, but this could
:36:10. > :36:15.be the precursor to the main move that goes. Has he spent too much
:36:16. > :36:19.energy? We will have to wait and see, fourth place at the moment, so
:36:20. > :36:23.well within a shout of getting a medal. Regan Gough has decided he
:36:24. > :36:37.wants to push on, and Cameron Meyer is there. Larsson now to the front.
:36:38. > :36:45.And Kenny De Ketele, the Belgian. He has not been as active as we thought
:36:46. > :36:52.he might have been in this race. Larsen from Denmark is off the front
:36:53. > :36:57.now. Cameron Meyer is desperate to get up the field, he has been making
:36:58. > :37:02.moves. Only four of them coming together here. The rider you were
:37:03. > :37:05.just talking about a couple of minutes ago, Pszczolarski from
:37:06. > :37:10.Poland, the European champion, is right up there on the Wear love
:37:11. > :37:13.Cameron Meyer. Larsson is there, and Kenny De Ketele as well, they are
:37:14. > :37:23.good riders and they cannot afford to get these riders away. He is
:37:24. > :37:28.going to have to play a cagey game, crosses fingers and hope it works. I
:37:29. > :37:32.think there is too much fatigue, and these four are going to be given
:37:33. > :37:42.enough rope to gain the lap. As they ride along the front, they are not
:37:43. > :37:46.quite half a lap ahead. He came towards the front when he sensed the
:37:47. > :37:50.danger, tried to help to bring it back, and Mark Stewart is now doing
:37:51. > :37:54.the same, there is Cameron Meyer from Australia, seven world titles
:37:55. > :37:58.on the track has won including as recently as yesterday in the team
:37:59. > :38:02.pursuit. Here are the standings overall, with Cameron Meyer leading
:38:03. > :38:05.the way ahead of Pszczolarski. Mark Stewart is hanging in in fourth
:38:06. > :38:11.place just outside the medals. But if they take a lap, and it is
:38:12. > :38:16.looking likely, it will be very difficult to get back into a medal
:38:17. > :38:21.position. It is about points, but if you take a lap, a 20 points bonus
:38:22. > :38:30.makes all the difference when they are spread around so evenly like
:38:31. > :38:39.this. My Cameron Meyer very much in control, he can settle into a steady
:38:40. > :38:43.pace. You don't get much better than Cameron Meyer and Kenny De Ketele,
:38:44. > :38:46.and those two in there with Pszczolarski and Larsson. They are
:38:47. > :38:51.working very well together, and it won't be long before they can gain a
:38:52. > :38:54.lap. The only opportunity you have in this position is to concede this
:38:55. > :38:59.particular battle and try to counter before they make the junction, and
:39:00. > :39:03.get back to the front and start to ride defensively. That is what the
:39:04. > :39:10.rider from Ukraine is trying to do, he is on his own, courted no-man's
:39:11. > :39:14.land, but he will be the last to resist as they come around and make
:39:15. > :39:18.the join. Stewart injecting some pace into the group, but it is too
:39:19. > :39:25.late now, the junction is made, all but made, to be honest. Pszczolarski
:39:26. > :39:33.has made the junction, the others are still a little way behind off
:39:34. > :39:36.the back. He will be awarded that just now. You have to catch the
:39:37. > :39:41.largest group on the track, and that is what he has just under the last
:39:42. > :39:44.few seconds, and the others will join him shortly. Cameron Murray are
:39:45. > :39:49.only 30 metres behind, although they have just swung up the track, which
:39:50. > :39:52.is an interesting move. He is being annoyed that he is having to be the
:39:53. > :39:56.lion's share of the work, the Australian, so they remain behind,
:39:57. > :39:59.the upside to that is they will get to score some points before they
:40:00. > :40:03.make the junction, so it could be tactical. It is a scenario where
:40:04. > :40:06.they are happy to sit just off the back of the peloton to make sure
:40:07. > :40:10.that they can contest the sprint, which is what they are doing now,
:40:11. > :40:15.and Kenny De Ketele comes past Cameron Meyer with a Larsson third
:40:16. > :40:19.over the line. Pszczolarski had already gone through. It was a tight
:40:20. > :40:22.one. Cameron Meyer was thinking, I want to accelerate take the points,
:40:23. > :40:28.but I do that, we will bridge the gap, so he had to settle for second.
:40:29. > :40:35.Inside the last 70 laps of the men's points race. They are down to sixth
:40:36. > :40:40.at the moment, but Cameron Meyer... They need to do a little bit of
:40:41. > :40:46.rejigging on our screens. Pszczolarski was not involved in the
:40:47. > :40:50.sprint. They are all back together now, and that has changed things at
:40:51. > :40:57.the top. Cameron Meyer has got a grip on this race, he is slowly
:40:58. > :41:02.extending his lead. Kenny De Ketele in equal third position, with
:41:03. > :41:07.Larsson way behind and after that it drops off a cliff. So if Stewart
:41:08. > :41:20.wants to get back into this, there would have to be even more than lap
:41:21. > :41:27.times at the moment. He has just done a turn in the green of Ireland,
:41:28. > :41:32.mark Danny. He has had an excellent season on the track, hasn't been
:41:33. > :41:37.able to get involved at the front end of this race, he has scored just
:41:38. > :41:52.one point so far, but if he has the legs, don't doubt that mark Downey
:41:53. > :41:54.will have a go. The ones in fourth to eighth position will not be given
:41:55. > :42:09.much leeway. 85 is Claudio Imhof who won the gold
:42:10. > :42:15.medal at last year's World Championships. They have decided to
:42:16. > :42:19.move to the front once more. They may as well have some coins if they
:42:20. > :42:26.are on offer, but primarily he wants to keep the pace high to stop people
:42:27. > :42:34.attacking. He is one of the best sprinters in this group, if not the
:42:35. > :42:41.best. He can ride defensively now. Cameron Meyer on the front, Andreas
:42:42. > :42:49.Graf behind him shakes his head, and says, I am not interested, it is up
:42:50. > :42:52.to you. It might be Larsson and Kenny De Ketele as they move through
:42:53. > :42:59.on the inside. This is positioning for the sprint, two laps to go as
:43:00. > :43:04.they come around, so only a few seconds away, and the points
:43:05. > :43:14.becoming bored more valuable. Certainly in that battle for the
:43:15. > :43:20.bronze medal at the moment. We can see Takuto Kurabayashi almost
:43:21. > :43:26.rolling to a halt there. Over the top comes Regan Gough at the last
:43:27. > :43:30.moment. It is a little bit too late from Regan Gough, he missed that
:43:31. > :43:36.lap, and that is making the difference. He is kind of getting in
:43:37. > :43:42.the way of the riders sprinting for the points to decide the medal
:43:43. > :43:48.positions. Larsson has just gained a couple of points there on Kenny De
:43:49. > :43:55.Ketele. So he is clear in third place there.
:43:56. > :44:11.it is great for the breakaways, but an awful lot of ground to make up
:44:12. > :44:22.with just 57 laps remaining. Stewart getting himself into a little move
:44:23. > :44:32.here. Going there with Michele Scartezzini from Italy. Cameron
:44:33. > :44:39.Meyer would like to close this down quite quickly. I don't think it is
:44:40. > :44:49.going anywhere, on the front of the bunch, just pushing some pace in,
:44:50. > :44:53.and that start is beginning to bite the. You can see how much it is
:44:54. > :45:00.hurting when we had a little shot of Arc Stuart, you could see his head
:45:01. > :45:01.hanging there. Big continuous effort here in this race, the action is
:45:02. > :45:20.relentless. Mark Downey leads on the track for now
:45:21. > :45:23.for Ireland. Using his effort to nullify any escape attempt, maybe
:45:24. > :45:29.nip some points if they are on offer, but he has a small buffer,
:45:30. > :45:32.pretty much has the Polish rider to watch and making sure nothing slips
:45:33. > :45:36.away. Well into the back-end of this race now, 52 laps to go and it will
:45:37. > :45:40.be difficult to wrestle that gold-medal. It may sound a lot, but
:45:41. > :45:45.they will go by quickly enough as our friend Mr Pszczolarski from
:45:46. > :45:49.Poland has an attack. We were momentarily on board with one of the
:45:50. > :45:53.riders, but Pszczolarski having a look and they were very quickly on
:45:54. > :45:57.his wheel. It was Cameron Meyer who led the charge, and he will now try
:45:58. > :46:00.to get a bigger cushion, with Mark Stewart up there in second place,
:46:01. > :46:07.and Kenny De Ketele is in third place, Pszczolarski on Kenny De
:46:08. > :46:10.Ketele's wheel. Round into the finishing straight, and Cameron
:46:11. > :46:12.Meyer takes the points this time, another 34 Mark Stewart, and that
:46:13. > :46:29.will take him up into sixth place. Myatt at the sprint at a nice time.
:46:30. > :46:34.-- Meyer. It is close between the kettle and Larsen level pegging,
:46:35. > :46:40.swapping places -- De Ketele. He could overhaul the Pole if they
:46:41. > :46:47.carry on the fight because they are better sprinters. Confirmation of
:46:48. > :46:52.the standing at the moment. Awful lot for somebody else to get into
:46:53. > :46:56.the challenge for the podium. I think it is between this four to
:46:57. > :46:59.decide the medals. Who will be unlucky and miss out on a medal?
:47:00. > :47:03.Mark Stewart from Great Britain, great to see him being assertive and
:47:04. > :47:07.animating the race getting involved as long as his legs will allow. So
:47:08. > :47:16.far they have held up well, superb effort from him. Meyer up for taking
:47:17. > :47:19.another lap. They were given the opportunity. But Gough decided if
:47:20. > :47:25.anybody is going up the road it is me and closed him down. Meyer has
:47:26. > :47:31.the look of somebody who is out for anything today, if anyone fancies
:47:32. > :47:36.it. 11 points clear. Just slowly building up that total, building up
:47:37. > :47:47.that gap. It is all relative, of course. Scartezzini from Italy
:47:48. > :48:01.having a little look, from the back of Scartezzini's saddle to Blaha of
:48:02. > :48:05.the Czech Republic and there is somebody having a go. He will be
:48:06. > :48:09.given an opportunity because he is no threat to the podium at the
:48:10. > :48:16.moment, he only has a single point on the board. It would be unwise for
:48:17. > :48:23.any of the favourites to expend energy chasing him down. Downey is
:48:24. > :48:27.looking across the track and has gained quite a lot of ground
:48:28. > :48:31.already, almost half a lap. Two laps to go until the next sprint so as
:48:32. > :48:38.well as his bonus if he makes it that far he will gain five points
:48:39. > :48:42.for a sprint flap. He could move himself right up into the minor
:48:43. > :48:48.placings. As you can see the peloton is not chasing at all, in relative
:48:49. > :48:52.terms taking it quite easy, they are fanning out around the track. He
:48:53. > :48:57.will get the points here, Downey, for Ireland, and De Ketele will
:48:58. > :49:03.continue his duel with Larsen and he is on Larsen's shoulder, as Gough
:49:04. > :49:08.continues his search for points. Mark Downey and here come the other
:49:09. > :49:14.is closing in, Regan Gough from New Zealand, Niklas Larsen of New
:49:15. > :49:20.Zealand and the rider on his wheel was Joao Matias from Portugal.
:49:21. > :49:24.Stronger than De Ketele at this point in the race, took a nice lead
:49:25. > :49:29.out. De Ketele is the sort of rider that tends to have a go if he is
:49:30. > :49:32.feeling good, he doesn't sit amongst the wheels. We have not seen him at
:49:33. > :49:35.the front of the race animating as much as we might have expected had
:49:36. > :49:40.he been on top form unless he is keeping his powder dry for a big
:49:41. > :49:46.one. Downey is still up the road plugging away, staff at half a lap,
:49:47. > :49:48.jumped up to eighth position by taking this points, but he is
:49:49. > :49:51.probably having second thoughts about this move now. He is really
:49:52. > :49:55.suffering but he has almost got the back of the main field insight.
:49:56. > :50:01.Unfortunately for him there is a move in the making behind him which
:50:02. > :50:05.has injected some pace. He's got a hope that that eases off a bit
:50:06. > :50:08.because at the moment he is not gaining ground at all but he has
:50:09. > :50:12.bought his ticket so he needs to stick with it as long as he possibly
:50:13. > :50:17.can. He will have some company in the not too distant future, Blaha
:50:18. > :50:23.leading the chase, Graf is there, Imhof, and also there is Amit Singh
:50:24. > :50:31.code from Kazakhstan. It looks to me like Krisztian Lovassy from Hungary
:50:32. > :50:36.as well. Behind the pace is on as well so they don't want to let this
:50:37. > :50:40.group of five getaway. It is certainly done for Downey. He is now
:50:41. > :50:44.going to try to get in the wheels of a group but he is completely spent
:50:45. > :50:49.now and I don't think he can claw his way in. He almost collided with
:50:50. > :50:51.Panassenko coming down the track as he came through, luckily they
:50:52. > :50:56.realised what was going on just-in-time. He has put in a big
:50:57. > :51:00.loan effort for several laps but he's hanging on to the wheels of the
:51:01. > :51:03.leading group. Meyer keeping the pace high in what is left of the
:51:04. > :51:08.main group behind, keeping it all together. The field is fairly well
:51:09. > :51:11.split into three separate sections now. De Ketele needs to get stuck
:51:12. > :51:16.into the chase because he is the one who needs to score some points. He's
:51:17. > :51:21.been pushed off the podium by Larsen at the moment, two points in arrears
:51:22. > :51:23.of the Danish rider. Larsen has been consistent, chipping away and
:51:24. > :51:31.collecting a few points. Looking good towards the end of the race as
:51:32. > :51:35.well. Two laps to go until the next sprint. So, Graf, Blaha, Downey,
:51:36. > :51:39.Lovassy, Imhof canned Panassenko, the riders at the front. They will
:51:40. > :51:45.contest this as they come around to take the Bell we just saw Mark
:51:46. > :51:52.Stewart with the capital and last an. They will not contest any points
:51:53. > :51:59.here. It will go to the riders in front Claudio Imhof is in second
:52:00. > :52:02.place. Five points for Hungary there. Hungary, Switzerland,
:52:03. > :52:07.Kazakhstan and Austria collecting the points. Meyer has decided he
:52:08. > :52:11.doesn't want anybody is getting on terms and even getting close to him
:52:12. > :52:16.so he has really turned the screws and split the bunch in the process.
:52:17. > :52:21.He is down with three riders and one of those three is Stewart. Stewart
:52:22. > :52:25.is hanging in there straining every sinew to hang in there with Cameron
:52:26. > :52:29.Meyer and Niklas Larsen, full credit to him for doing that, and he is on
:52:30. > :52:34.the wheel of Larsen going down the back straight onto the front of the
:52:35. > :52:38.second group, Mark Stewart. Stewart deciding that one is not going to
:52:39. > :52:41.work, they are too close and they will let me do the chasing so he has
:52:42. > :52:48.wisely gone to the back of the group. There he is in seventh place
:52:49. > :52:56.in the overall standings, Meyer leading from Pszczolarski and De
:52:57. > :52:59.Ketele. Larsen is the only rider not currently on the podium who has a
:53:00. > :53:03.realistic chance of getting there. It is a shame he missed that one
:53:04. > :53:08.move, Meyer going again to jump across, took in micro-break, and is
:53:09. > :53:13.now ploughing across to that move. He knows the gold-medal with is
:53:14. > :53:17.within his sights. Gliding around the bottom of the track as if he is
:53:18. > :53:22.on a rail, Cameron Meyer. What a class act he is, he looks so stylish
:53:23. > :53:27.on the bike. He joins the front group and made it look effortless,
:53:28. > :53:35.which clearly it was anything but. He will ride around the top and
:53:36. > :53:40.leaves them behind, making them look as if they were riding in treacle.
:53:41. > :53:42.Interesting move and I think behind they will probably start conceding
:53:43. > :53:47.defeat and fighting for the minor placings. Meyer feeling good, might
:53:48. > :53:58.as well go and consolidate the win now. Make sure as the laps ticked
:53:59. > :54:03.away. Quite a long way to go, three laps to go, so it is a big effort he
:54:04. > :54:08.is making here. He is slowly pulling away. He is in a class of his own
:54:09. > :54:12.here. It is a one-man race here at the moment and Cameron Meyer from
:54:13. > :54:16.Australia is leaving everyone trailing in his wake as he goes past
:54:17. > :54:22.the finishing line hurtling around the bottom of the track, hoovering
:54:23. > :54:31.up all before him. One imagines hoovering up five more points in
:54:32. > :54:39.just over a lap's time. Such a crushing move that he has broken the
:54:40. > :54:45.room morale -- broken the morale of the others. They have conceded and
:54:46. > :54:48.gone for the other two medal positions. Meyer totally dominant in
:54:49. > :54:57.this race, five points to him, and here comes the chase leading it
:54:58. > :55:03.Pszczolarski from Poland. And behind him Imhof. He needed to get involved
:55:04. > :55:08.in the sprints. Began, De Ketele not able to get involved in anything.
:55:09. > :55:13.Meyer will take a lap on his own here. He's going to do it on his
:55:14. > :55:19.own. Already got 53 points on the board. Cameron Meyer is going to win
:55:20. > :55:26.this race in the grand manner. And here he comes now. About to make
:55:27. > :55:31.that junction. What a ride by Cameron Meyer, stunning. Nice move
:55:32. > :55:35.off the front by Kneisky who was countered, and he still has the
:55:36. > :55:40.possibility to get himself onto the podium if you can gain a lap. It is
:55:41. > :55:44.all about lapping now for anybody not in the original move, they must
:55:45. > :55:48.gain a lap. Might make life interesting for one or two others
:55:49. > :55:51.behind the Kneisky is finding it hard to press on and gain a bigger
:55:52. > :55:55.advantage over the rest of the field but he must try and do so. It's the
:55:56. > :56:00.only chance he has gone now but Cameron Meyer's lead is a yawning
:56:01. > :56:06.chasm, it is enormous, over Pszczolarski. But we have seen a
:56:07. > :56:11.masterclass here in points racing from Cameron Meyer who is set fair
:56:12. > :56:15.now to win this title for the fourth time in his career. Just stayed out
:56:16. > :56:23.of trouble and kept away from the back wheel of Graf. Two sprints to
:56:24. > :56:26.go. Mark Downey is in tenth place overall, he has six points, but
:56:27. > :56:30.determined to get involved as much as possible here all the way to the
:56:31. > :56:35.end of the race and it is he and Regan Gough at the front. And it is
:56:36. > :56:40.Meyer again who closes down this move. He is relentless! He is
:56:41. > :56:46.relentless here. It is Cameron Meyer. This could be the most
:56:47. > :56:51.convincing win in a points race of the last decade, to be honest. It
:56:52. > :56:58.has been awhile since the last road and won the points race at the World
:56:59. > :57:02.Championships, 2009, 2010 and 2012, so the last time was in front of an
:57:03. > :57:05.Australian crowd in Melbourne shortly before the London Olympic
:57:06. > :57:08.Games. Concentrating on the road for the most part of the time since then
:57:09. > :57:11.but consciously making the decision to come back to the track which is
:57:12. > :57:16.good for track racing as a whole and we look forward to seeing him
:57:17. > :57:25.pushing forward to the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020 which he has very
:57:26. > :57:28.much in his sights. They are on the Sprint lap, Gough leading the way
:57:29. > :57:30.but he is about to be reeled in by the looks of things by the
:57:31. > :57:33.insatiable Cameron Meyer who is closing in on the Kiwi. Can he
:57:34. > :57:36.overhaul him? No, but happy enough with three points, Larsen again
:57:37. > :57:42.scores a couple of points for Denmark just ahead of Scartezzini of
:57:43. > :57:46.Italy. The medal positions are being consolidated now, Larsen in that
:57:47. > :57:56.bronze medal spot, four points clear of the kettle of culture. -- Jay
:57:57. > :58:01.into the last few laps of the race. Cameron Meyer just needs to stay
:58:02. > :58:06.upright to win the world title again. Pszczolarski, the European
:58:07. > :58:13.champion, seemingly heading for silver. Larsen Denmark of the front
:58:14. > :58:22.and Meyer from Australia, the man to lead the chase. Meyer just keeps
:58:23. > :58:26.ploughing on. And Larsen, who thought maybe he had stolen a march
:58:27. > :58:30.on the others now realises he hasn't because the last person he wanted to
:58:31. > :58:35.chase him has indeed done exactly that. Momentary bunch up, in the
:58:36. > :58:39.White with the blue helmet from Italy, Meyer on the inside, Cheung
:58:40. > :58:42.King Lok from Moan Kok goes to the front and the home crowd have
:58:43. > :58:51.something to cheer for the first time in a while. -- Cheung King Lok.
:58:52. > :58:55.He is the national road and time trial champion of Hong Kong, five
:58:56. > :58:59.times the Asian champion, looking to provide a grandstand finish if he
:59:00. > :59:03.possibly can. He won't be involved at the top of the leaderboard in
:59:04. > :59:07.terms of the overall standings. But it's not going to stop him trying to
:59:08. > :59:12.get the glory in the final sprint if he possibly can with five laps to
:59:13. > :59:17.go. The chase is on, there is to well of Spain and Meyer looking
:59:18. > :59:20.comfortable tucked in behind him. -- Teruel. There are still potential
:59:21. > :59:26.here for a rejig of medals on the last lap. De Ketele has been very
:59:27. > :59:31.quiet recently. He's going to have to do something special to put
:59:32. > :59:37.Larsson down into fourth spot, the first two places are secure, I
:59:38. > :59:43.think. Three laps to go. Cheung King Lok from Hong Kong still leads. He
:59:44. > :59:47.has the local crowd on the edge of their seats. Will he be able to hang
:59:48. > :59:52.on for the final couple of laps? De Ketele going for it down the back
:59:53. > :59:56.straight, saving every ounce of energy he has possibly got trying to
:59:57. > :00:00.catch out Larsen and that is what he has done, it is all or nothing for
:00:01. > :00:04.De Ketele, it won't take him to the world title but could put him on the
:00:05. > :00:08.podium here and Cheung King Lok has been left behind as De Ketele goes
:00:09. > :00:11.for it and takes the bell at the front of the race. I think he's
:00:12. > :00:19.going to do it, everybody is strung out behind and Larsen was caught
:00:20. > :00:23.out, he's sprinting hard now but a long way back, he is coming fast but
:00:24. > :00:26.I think the Belgian will hang on to take the points. He has a lot of
:00:27. > :00:29.work to do, Kenny De Ketele taking the sprint ahead of Regan Gough,
:00:30. > :00:32.Claudio Imhof comes over the line in fourth place, that despite the
:00:33. > :00:37.brilliant effort from Kenny De Ketele it was about that man there,
:00:38. > :00:41.utterly dominant, it was a masterclass of points racing from
:00:42. > :00:49.the now four-time world champion in this event. Cameron Meyer was
:00:50. > :00:53.absolutely brilliant. And he was utterly relentless. He crushed the
:00:54. > :01:00.field in this race and Cameron Meyer has his second gold medal of these
:01:01. > :01:02.championships, having been part of Australia's team pursuit squad
:01:03. > :01:08.yesterday, he now and is an individual title. Kenny De Ketele
:01:09. > :01:12.taking ten points on the line and Kenny De Ketele may have pushed
:01:13. > :01:16.himself not only onto the podium, Chris, but maybe even higher than we
:01:17. > :01:21.were expecting. Double points for the last sprint. He could with the
:01:22. > :01:25.double points have pushed Dummett pipped Wyszomirski for the podium.
:01:26. > :01:29.Disposition on the final sprint that makes the decision if equal on
:01:30. > :01:33.points and he probably made the decision 40 or 50 laps ago, thinking
:01:34. > :01:36.he only had one big effort left in him and he would wait and it was
:01:37. > :01:41.poor tactics from Larsen because he only had to watch one person in this
:01:42. > :01:45.race and he let him go. That is what we said earlier, in terms of track
:01:46. > :01:50.craft and knowledge, and making decisions on the move in the heat of
:01:51. > :01:53.the moment there are not many better than Cameron Meyer, but also you
:01:54. > :01:57.would put Kenny De Ketele in that class as well, a rider who has done
:01:58. > :02:01.so many races for so long, he knows what to do, he made that decision
:02:02. > :02:05.and made it count. There we are, there is the result, Cameron Meyer,
:02:06. > :02:07.the new world champion, Kenny De Ketele with that stupendous
:02:08. > :02:14.last-minute effort has hauled himself up from fourth to second
:02:15. > :02:17.place, budget Pszczolarski of Poland is in third and Niklas Larsen from
:02:18. > :02:22.Denmark who was in the medals all the way through has just been pipped
:02:23. > :02:23.and finishes fourth. Cameron Meyer is all smiles and no surprise. What
:02:24. > :02:37.a race. An extraordinary performance from
:02:38. > :02:41.Cameron Meyer, and Mark Stewart finishing seventh, a really decent
:02:42. > :02:45.effort. It is amazing watching Kenny De Ketele at the end of all those
:02:46. > :02:49.laps to suddenly be able to sprint. Once he got a sniff of the finish
:02:50. > :02:54.line, it bumped him up into a silver place, because you get more points
:02:55. > :02:58.for the last sprint, so it was all worth it for a medal. And for the
:02:59. > :03:03.Australian team, more celebrations, and particularly Cameron Meyer,
:03:04. > :03:10.eight time world champion. He is my age, he won three junior champions
:03:11. > :03:14.back in 2006, this is his eighth, but he has never got an Olympic
:03:15. > :03:18.medal. He was fourth in Beijing, didn't go to London or Rio, and I
:03:19. > :03:24.think he would like to try to go to Tokyo, perhaps with a new look
:03:25. > :03:31.omnium. He has been so incredibly dominant, I would love to see him at
:03:32. > :03:38.the Olympic Games in either the team sprint or the omnium. He hasn't
:03:39. > :03:43.ridden a track worlds since 2012 in Melbourne, and the last few years he
:03:44. > :03:47.has been predominantly a road rider. He Hannah Short retirement and made
:03:48. > :03:50.a rapid comeback from that. Obviously still felt hungry for
:03:51. > :03:55.more. He is a rider I always really enjoy watching. When you have known
:03:56. > :03:59.a rider for that long, it is interesting to see however body
:04:00. > :04:01.progresses from being a junior world champion, and eight world titles now
:04:02. > :04:08.and still looking stronger than ever. He is so lean and fit, but
:04:09. > :04:11.Chris you will appreciate this totally, the motivation to keep
:04:12. > :04:16.coming back, keep coming back, to have that longevity. And that will
:04:17. > :04:22.break that semi retirement that he had and reinvigorate that desire. He
:04:23. > :04:26.has been going for a long time, we used to train in Perth which is
:04:27. > :04:30.where Cameron and his brother Travis are from, and they used to train and
:04:31. > :04:33.compete, we have seen them come through from the junior inks through
:04:34. > :04:36.to being world champions stop I think it is great track cycling to
:04:37. > :04:41.have him back on the scene again away from the road, and he will be
:04:42. > :04:47.hungry for the Commonwealth Games and exterior. Exactly, and you can
:04:48. > :04:50.see the Australians are building towards it as a priority. It is hard
:04:51. > :04:56.to look beyond them as the team to beat for the Commonwealth Games, the
:04:57. > :05:03.GB team is split into the home nations, but fighting against them
:05:04. > :05:07.will be a good competition to look out for. And Simon Jones went for
:05:08. > :05:13.the rector job in British cycling, didn't get it but got the job in
:05:14. > :05:17.Australia. He has come in at the right time, he will bring the
:05:18. > :05:26.experience and knowledge that he has had from being part of British
:05:27. > :05:32.cycling, so he has timed it well. He was the West Australian Institute
:05:33. > :05:36.director, so he has been there for a while. And in the centre of the
:05:37. > :05:40.track, Katie Archibald is going through her preparation, the
:05:41. > :05:50.elimination race and points race to come. How well are you, will she
:05:51. > :05:53.have watched Cameron Meyer? Yes, she has the headphones on warming up,
:05:54. > :05:57.her last ten minutes she won't be watching, that you get pretty bored
:05:58. > :06:01.in the centre of the track, so it is nice when there is a race you can
:06:02. > :06:08.watch. What is she listening to, do we know? I don't know, actually. I
:06:09. > :06:21.wouldn't like to call that. Katie is a racing fan,. She likes hip-hop,
:06:22. > :06:29.apparently. I say that like I know what I'm talking about! The within's
:06:30. > :06:35.sprint semifinals, it is Stephanie Morton up next. You were so
:06:36. > :06:52.convincing, Cler! It is the first of the semifinals of
:06:53. > :07:03.the women's sprint. She is the Commonwealth sprint champion.
:07:04. > :07:09.She is still other top end of her game. She is in control at the
:07:10. > :07:14.moment, wanting to try to control this one. Stephanie Morton gathering
:07:15. > :07:22.speed, moving up into her blind spot. There is a lap to go, but it
:07:23. > :07:31.was a faint, and now she can turn on the gas, can she go over the top?
:07:32. > :07:38.And Morton pushes her all the way to the line, but Simona Krupeckaite
:07:39. > :07:42.gets it. Mortar was coming fast around the outside, but then she
:07:43. > :07:48.just stalled in the last few metres, so I thought she was going to get
:07:49. > :07:52.that one. 1-0 to the Lithuanian in the best of three semifinal, and
:07:53. > :07:57.Krupeckaite has three times finished second in the World Championship,
:07:58. > :08:01.she has never actually won the world crown. Will this finally be her
:08:02. > :08:09.year? She has a lot to do, she has to get past Stephanie Morton and
:08:10. > :08:20.either Lee Wai Sze or Kristina Vogel. She was feigning the move,
:08:21. > :08:23.trying to push on, but she will is an experienced rider and just kept
:08:24. > :08:29.accelerating, didn't get panicked into going to early. I would like to
:08:30. > :08:34.hear Chris Hoy's analysis later, but she kept a little back for the final
:08:35. > :08:43.kick, I think, and it just caught Stephanie Morton out. Now, Lee Wai
:08:44. > :08:49.Sze from Hong Kong, a big sporting star here. The host nation's best
:08:50. > :08:54.hope of a medal by far in these championships. Kristina Vogel, the
:08:55. > :09:02.Olympic champion. Her opponent in this semifinal. They are going
:09:03. > :09:13.eyeball to eyeball. They can't see! They both have mirror visors on.
:09:14. > :09:19.Take my word I'm staring at you. Three laps of the track, and this
:09:20. > :09:25.has the potential to be an epic battle between the pair of them. We
:09:26. > :09:32.have seen some fantastic racing in this World Championships, a lot of
:09:33. > :09:36.close contests, we have seen form books turned over. Will we see
:09:37. > :09:48.another track stand? Used to be very popular on the
:09:49. > :09:54.larger tracks to try to force your opponent to the front, the straights
:09:55. > :09:58.are at having a lead made a big difference, but with 250 metres
:09:59. > :10:03.tracks, it is less clear which is the most advantageous position.
:10:04. > :10:12.Slowly the pace increases, the tension builds, the calm before the
:10:13. > :10:14.storm. Vogel is really close, it is difficult, they train to ride
:10:15. > :10:19.looking back down the track, using the lines as a reference point. But
:10:20. > :10:24.when a rider is right in your shadow, it is hard to keep track of
:10:25. > :10:27.them. Kristina Vogel has some height on the far side of the track, next
:10:28. > :10:33.time over the line they will take the bell and the Sprint will really
:10:34. > :10:36.be on. Here we go, and it is led by Lee Wai Sze, here comes Kristina
:10:37. > :10:40.Vogel to try to make a challenge. Has the rider from Hong Kong got the
:10:41. > :10:46.speed to hold off the Olympic champion? Shoulder to shoulder round
:10:47. > :10:51.the bend, Alberta elbow, eyeballs out, and Lee Wai Sze is just pipped
:10:52. > :10:58.on the line by Kristina Vogel, great race. Almost came down to endurance,
:10:59. > :11:04.that one, the drag race started on the back straight, and Lee was
:11:05. > :11:07.holding her own, but Vogel managed to stick with it, and then suddenly
:11:08. > :11:13.had that slight height advantage and that was enough. Lee is already in
:11:14. > :11:18.the last chance saloon, she has to win the next match between the peril
:11:19. > :11:23.of them. Here is the Sprint once more, and what an intense battle it
:11:24. > :11:30.was between the pair of them. She was determined not to give an inch,
:11:31. > :11:35.outside the sprinter's line as well. When the Sprint proper had started.
:11:36. > :11:43.But it was Vogel who just had that little bit extra momentum. The
:11:44. > :11:46.geometry of the track played its part, and the best riders use every
:11:47. > :11:52.single bit of tactical advantage they can. We will reach a conclusion
:11:53. > :11:56.in the women's sprint in this session here today at the World
:11:57. > :11:59.Championships in Hong Kong. Kristina Vogel still looks a picture of
:12:00. > :12:05.concentration as she whines down on the inside of the track. A little
:12:06. > :12:14.later on we will get the second match of the semifinals, but so far
:12:15. > :12:18.it is Simone Krupeckaite leading 1-0, and Kristina Vogel who has the
:12:19. > :12:23.advantage over Lee Wai Sze from Hong Kong.
:12:24. > :12:34.So good to watch, these sprint races, for the psychological games.
:12:35. > :12:38.Why do sprinters need to do the intimidation? It is very
:12:39. > :12:42.gladiatorial, you are staring at your opponent, and you have to watch
:12:43. > :12:45.them just in case they go for a long one, especially the Germans, they
:12:46. > :12:50.are famous for being sneaky in that respect in the sprint. You use to
:12:51. > :12:53.get people trying to come up to you and eyeball you before you step on
:12:54. > :12:59.the track. That was always a sign that they were nervous, but it is
:13:00. > :13:06.all part of the game. Endurance cyclists don't do that? Not really,
:13:07. > :13:10.no. It is different fast because you have to wait, all sitting in the pit
:13:11. > :13:14.together. I couldn't do it, I would be smiling. That would disarm them,
:13:15. > :13:21.though, they would say, what is she smiling about? There was slight
:13:22. > :13:28.querying the studio that there might have been the stewards enquiry had
:13:29. > :13:32.Lee Wai Sze won that? She came out of the red, the sprinters lain here,
:13:33. > :13:41.and once you have committed to that, you have to commit to it. Having a
:13:42. > :13:48.right battle, a right old Hong Kong ding-dong, but if Lee had won this,
:13:49. > :13:52.I think that would have been reversed. And coming down onto the
:13:53. > :13:56.blue, that is not illegal but it is slightly slower? It is a longer
:13:57. > :13:59.distance to come off and back on again, and if you do it on the
:14:00. > :14:07.banking itself on the corner, there is a risk that you can crashed
:14:08. > :14:10.because it is not as banked. Let's focus on Katie Archibald going into
:14:11. > :14:14.the last two stages of the women's omnium, the first thing she will
:14:15. > :14:22.have to do is finish first or second in the elimination race, what should
:14:23. > :14:25.her tactics be? She needs to try to stay out of trouble, stay near the
:14:26. > :14:29.front, and she can do that for a long period of time, put the people
:14:30. > :14:33.behind her under pressure. And then try to get through the gaps, she is
:14:34. > :14:38.phenomenal at doing that, no gap is too small, she is not scared. You
:14:39. > :14:42.will see her towards the end go to the back, and pick people off one by
:14:43. > :14:48.one like I used to do. And make sure you are not the one who was left
:14:49. > :14:54.last. Yes, the last person over the line is out. Did you love the
:14:55. > :14:58.elimination? Yes, it was one of my favourites, I'm excited to see her
:14:59. > :15:03.do it. Everything is do or die, it is thrilling, and if you are out,
:15:04. > :15:07.you are out, so it is worth taking that gap and taking the chance. You
:15:08. > :15:12.gave us a heart attack watching you! It might be fun for you! They want
:15:13. > :15:17.people to watch the omnium, it is a bit of fun! How we feeling about
:15:18. > :15:20.this new omnium so far? I am not a big fan, but let's wait and see if
:15:21. > :15:25.Katie wins, we might change our minds! This is going to be just
:15:26. > :15:28.thrilling to watch, because the back rider will get eliminated every
:15:29. > :15:33.other lap, and Chris Boardman and Simon Brotherton can call talkers
:15:34. > :15:38.through the elimination race in the women's omnium.
:15:39. > :15:43.COMMENTATOR: Hang onto your hats, we are under underway, the race is on.
:15:44. > :15:47.Neutralist start for the event because everybody wants to be at the
:15:48. > :15:53.front. With such dramatic consequences being at the back after
:15:54. > :15:58.two laps everybody wants to be at the front. It was like the start of
:15:59. > :16:02.a greyhound race, as soon as the gun went they were heading for the front
:16:03. > :16:05.making sure they are not out of the race early on. Katie Archibald,
:16:06. > :16:11.halfway back on the outside at the moment, next time over the line we
:16:12. > :16:13.will lose our first rider, the light on the handlebar will start
:16:14. > :16:21.flashing, the number will be held up, and they will have to make way.
:16:22. > :16:27.The first rider out is the rider from Taipei, Zeng Ke Xin. They will
:16:28. > :16:32.get a brief respite before sprinting again. They have half a lap to make
:16:33. > :16:37.the decision on that one before it is passed on to the rider. Riding at
:16:38. > :16:42.the back at the moment is Luo Xiaoling from China, making a move
:16:43. > :16:50.to try and push up the field. Now she is with half a lap to go. Nicely
:16:51. > :16:55.positioned halfway down the field, where the shape of the track plays a
:16:56. > :17:03.big part in this race. If you go around the outside it is a long way.
:17:04. > :17:08.Yumi Kajihara from Japan, the second rider to go, not scoring well in
:17:09. > :17:12.this event. Very easy to get caught out, you are swamped in this event,
:17:13. > :17:15.you think you are nicely placed and suddenly a lot of writers who have
:17:16. > :17:20.been sitting on your shoulder roll down into straight from the high
:17:21. > :17:24.banking and overtake and there is nowhere to go. Burano brakes on
:17:25. > :17:28.these bikes. Sarah Hammer moving to the outside making sure she's out of
:17:29. > :17:35.trouble. There is a big pile up and we have lost several riders. Italy
:17:36. > :17:39.down, Canada down. And I think Lithuania as well. Three riders have
:17:40. > :17:43.fallen quite heavily. They have neutralised the race, the yellow
:17:44. > :17:46.flag is out until they have made sure the riders are OK and cleared
:17:47. > :17:52.bikes out of the way and checked the track over. Elisa Balsamo, the world
:17:53. > :17:58.junior road race champion, and fortunately back on her feet, shaken
:17:59. > :18:04.but looks OK. Here is the crash again. It is so easy to hit
:18:05. > :18:08.somebody's back wheel and that is what happened. You can see the rider
:18:09. > :18:12.from Belgium chips ahead and she knows somebody just touched her back
:18:13. > :18:28.wheel. Stephanie Roorda from Canada falling, and the Lithuanian, Olivia
:18:29. > :18:31.Bella -- Olivia Bella site. Roorda is on the ground still being
:18:32. > :18:37.attended to and they are calling for the stretcher. My fear is that maybe
:18:38. > :18:42.her championship is done. It was a heavy fall. Crashed onto the track,
:18:43. > :18:46.one of the most horrible parts of it, you can see it coming and you
:18:47. > :18:51.have no brakes and there is nowhere to go so you have a full second to
:18:52. > :18:57.appreciate what is going to happen. As we watch it again, Laura, back in
:18:58. > :19:00.the studio, it is every rider's worst nightmare because often it is
:19:01. > :19:06.not your fault and there is nothing you can do. She got caught out at
:19:07. > :19:09.the back and has no brakes and has nowhere to go other than just
:19:10. > :19:14.hitting straight into them, and she looks like she has come off worse in
:19:15. > :19:18.the crash. In a way it can work to your advantage in that you get a
:19:19. > :19:23.massive adrenaline rush. As long as you can get back up and get back on
:19:24. > :19:24.the bike you might see those crash riders come forward and do quite
:19:25. > :19:33.well now. The race is underway once again, the
:19:34. > :19:37.gun has just fired and Stephanie Roorda is having a neck brace put on
:19:38. > :19:42.down in front of us, so hopefully that is precautionary and she will
:19:43. > :19:45.be OK and we will concentrate on the race. I'm surprised they have
:19:46. > :19:48.restarted it with all of that paraphernalia right against the
:19:49. > :19:53.track, having just demonstrated how precarious this race can be. But
:19:54. > :19:57.started it again they have and Katie Archibald is nicely placed in third
:19:58. > :20:02.position on the outside at the moment. Number 28, the rider at the
:20:03. > :20:09.back, is from Lithuania, one of the riders who crashed, Olivija
:20:10. > :20:13.Baleisyte, and she goes. The adrenaline rush didn't work for her
:20:14. > :20:18.but at least she is in one piece as Stephanie Roorda leaves the track.
:20:19. > :20:25.She is walking off the inside of the track which is great to see. She has
:20:26. > :20:28.one of the coaching staff with her but good news that Stephanie Roorda,
:20:29. > :20:33.who has a neck brace on, is at least able to walk away from the edge of
:20:34. > :20:38.the track. Hopefully she will be OK. The next sprint is coming up
:20:39. > :20:42.shortly. This is it now, Katie Archibald has been rolling around at
:20:43. > :20:46.the front, just one wheel to sit on, comfortable behind Sarah Hammer.
:20:47. > :20:50.Lydia Boyland was impressive at the front again, she rode really well in
:20:51. > :20:56.the last race ahead of this one. It is the German rider Tatjana Paller
:20:57. > :21:01.who is out this time, slowly and slowly we are whittling through the
:21:02. > :21:04.field. Let's hope there are no more mishaps. Katie Archibald in third
:21:05. > :21:08.place at the moment. It is stringing out now with a bit of speed. She
:21:09. > :21:12.went up to make sure she wouldn't get boxed in and Sarah Hammer came
:21:13. > :21:18.underneath. You can move yourself forward but there is nowhere to go.
:21:19. > :21:25.So, Hammer taking some risks. She is having a look around and I think it
:21:26. > :21:32.is the rider from Hong Kong who is out, Pang Yao, no, it has been given
:21:33. > :21:35.as China. This has got to be the toughest of all competitions to be a
:21:36. > :21:40.commissar, they have less than ten seconds to make a decision. Lucy
:21:41. > :21:48.Dowling was the rider called in. Now have they started already? -- Luo
:21:49. > :21:54.Xiaoling. Steinbach has space to move into unlike Pang Yao from Hong
:21:55. > :21:57.Kong who finds herself at the tail end of the field and may be the
:21:58. > :22:03.rider to go. Maybe not, the Czech Republic, it is Jarmila Machacova,
:22:04. > :22:14.the former world champion, who is the latest to be eliminated here.
:22:15. > :22:18.Points race world champion in 2013. Katie Archibald has not got many
:22:19. > :22:23.people behind her and she is quite low down at the moment, so she could
:22:24. > :22:27.just do with nudging out there because she is in a hole. She has
:22:28. > :22:30.sensed the danger and trying to push up but she is back wheel at the
:22:31. > :22:34.moment and will have to come around the outside quickly if she can. It
:22:35. > :22:38.will have to be a sprint from Katie Archibald as she sprints to stay in
:22:39. > :22:44.the race and she may have made it, Lydia Boyland may have gone. Making
:22:45. > :22:48.life difficult for us watching it. That were so close. Lydia Boyland
:22:49. > :22:52.has gone, but Katie Archibald was a whisker away from losing a hat full
:22:53. > :22:56.of points. She sensed the danger with three quarters of a lap to go
:22:57. > :23:00.and it has given her an adrenaline boost, I think. She is going the
:23:01. > :23:03.long way round on the outside but she has room to race and that is all
:23:04. > :23:07.she needs at the moment. Sarah Hammer taking the Long Way round
:23:08. > :23:14.coming towards the front trying to make sure she stays out of trouble,
:23:15. > :23:20.Katie Archibald is going to be OK this time, Sternberg of Norway will
:23:21. > :23:23.go as Kirsten Wild leads. Amy Cure from Australia leads them round down
:23:24. > :23:31.the back straight. Norway the latest out. Anita Stenberg. Amy Cure at the
:23:32. > :23:36.front, Kirsten Wild stayed in the position where she is in second
:23:37. > :23:41.place for quite a while now. Hammer is in the danger spot coming around
:23:42. > :23:44.the outside so she is playing the sprinting game, Katie Archibald is
:23:45. > :23:49.comfortable. Archibald in a better position, just on the outside of
:23:50. > :23:53.Roxane Fournier. Here comes Sarah Hammer around the outside, Katie
:23:54. > :24:01.Archibald safely through and the Hong Kong rider Pang Yao is finally
:24:02. > :24:07.out this time. Disappointment around the velodrome. This race is going at
:24:08. > :24:14.some rate. Sarah Hammer once again at the back. Choosing to spend her
:24:15. > :24:18.energy steady-state, Archibald, steady pace all the way through
:24:19. > :24:24.rather than constant pace which is how Hammer is playing this one, it
:24:25. > :24:27.is energy expensive. Could be a tough one for Tetyana Klimchenko at
:24:28. > :24:31.the back of the field. Sarah Hammer looks around to make sure that she
:24:32. > :24:37.is safe, and indeed the rider who may have gone was Alzbeta Pavlendova
:24:38. > :24:42.from Slovakia. Yes, it is Pavlendova who is out. Archibald is in the
:24:43. > :24:46.middle of the pack now at the bottom. So she is going to have to
:24:47. > :24:49.be a little bit careful now. There is not a lot of riders and they
:24:50. > :24:54.could all sweep over the top very quickly. That is the thing about
:24:55. > :24:57.Laura when she races. She is very good at finding a little gap and
:24:58. > :25:03.squeezing through it. She needs to find one now because that is the
:25:04. > :25:06.most difficult of all places to be. Boxed in a little bit here but I
:25:07. > :25:11.think she will get away with it, yes, she will, and it's the Italian
:25:12. > :25:17.rider who is out, Balsamo, who was one of those who fell early on. She
:25:18. > :25:21.got up and collected a few more points to her total. She can now
:25:22. > :25:28.tend to her injuries after the heavy crash. She was lying fifth going
:25:29. > :25:36.into this. Sarah Hammer is on the wheel of Katie Archibald. Sprinting.
:25:37. > :25:41.Oh! Sarah Hammer. She sensed what was going to happen, she thought she
:25:42. > :25:45.would put her in the box and she was not having it. She has a good turn
:25:46. > :25:49.of speed. Fournier has work to do to make sure she stays in, it is either
:25:50. > :25:55.fully or the rider from New Zealand, I think it may be Roxane Fournier.
:25:56. > :26:00.It is New Zealand. Michaela Drummond, who was the other rider
:26:01. > :26:04.there. She is adjudged to have had her wheel and little bit further
:26:05. > :26:08.back than the French woman who stays alive in this elimination race for a
:26:09. > :26:11.little bit longer. Amy Cure on the front for Australia, Kirsten Wild of
:26:12. > :26:14.the Netherlands coming around the outside, Katie Archibald as well
:26:15. > :26:20.just moves around the outside with Lotte Kopecky. Sarah Hammer is at
:26:21. > :26:25.the back right behind Roxane Fournier, Katie Archibald is all
:26:26. > :26:32.right here, Wild and Archibald first over and it will be Tetyana
:26:33. > :26:37.Klimchenko from Ukraine. The lights are flashing on the handlebars, her
:26:38. > :26:40.race is run. Sarah Hammer feels she has the measure of this group now
:26:41. > :26:44.and she is saving her effort until the last quarter of a lap, just
:26:45. > :26:47.sitting at the back and waiting. It looks like it could be Katie
:26:48. > :26:53.Archibald is the person she has got to get over in the next half a lap.
:26:54. > :26:57.Katie Archibald moves past Roxane Fournier and Sarah Hammer is doing
:26:58. > :27:00.everything she can to stick to Archibald's wheel, Kirsten Wild
:27:01. > :27:03.staying out of trouble at the front, has a little look around, over the
:27:04. > :27:10.line they come, that will be very close. Yes, the Spanish rider. We
:27:11. > :27:18.will see what the judges' decision is. It is the Spanish rider Ana
:27:19. > :27:26.Usabiaga. There wasn't much in that. Eight riders left. I think a little
:27:27. > :27:30.bit more respect between Archibald and Hammer at the moment, not trying
:27:31. > :27:34.to play games by watching each other in, just focusing on their own race.
:27:35. > :27:38.Ana Usabiaga is gone, we're down to seven, Sarah Hammer will try and
:27:39. > :27:43.make the move again from the back of the field, Katie Archibald, as they
:27:44. > :27:48.cross the line... We will nervously await the decision of the judges
:27:49. > :27:54.here. It is France who are out. Roxane Fournier. I wouldn't have
:27:55. > :28:00.called that one. So, match sprinting, every 30 seconds. Two
:28:01. > :28:04.very close escapes for Katie Archibald in this race but she is
:28:05. > :28:07.still hanging in there. Hammer is in a difficult position boxed on the
:28:08. > :28:11.inside and Katie Archibald Binks, well, I will keep you there quite
:28:12. > :28:16.happily thank you very much. Hammer has nowhere to go at the moment. No,
:28:17. > :28:21.she hasn't, and will have to force her way out. Over the line and Sarah
:28:22. > :28:24.Hammer is out beaten in the Sprint. A real surprise, she's been
:28:25. > :28:31.fantastic in the event in the past. She had a bad first event, and that
:28:32. > :28:34.could put the chances of her vying for gold in real difficulty now. The
:28:35. > :28:39.key for Katie Archibald is to take full advantage of the situation. Amy
:28:40. > :28:42.Cure is still in there for Australia, Kirsten Wild of the
:28:43. > :28:47.Netherlands. The rider in the red and white is Daria Pikulik in the
:28:48. > :28:51.middle of your picture from Poland. Archibald is there, Lotte Kopecky is
:28:52. > :28:55.also there from Belgium. Here comes the Sprint, will Archibald have the
:28:56. > :28:59.legs to stay in it? She will be pushed all the way, I think Katie
:29:00. > :29:03.Archibald might have gone this time by half a wheel. She looked a bit
:29:04. > :29:07.spent and there was a lot of battles she had to fight consecutively and I
:29:08. > :29:11.think it caught up in the end. She just didn't have the turn of speed.
:29:12. > :29:21.Katie Archibald is out and we're left four, Wild, Pikulik is there,
:29:22. > :29:28.could Peki. Barely time for them to catch their breath before the next
:29:29. > :29:32.sprint is on. -- Lotte Kopecky. Custom build has stayed out of
:29:33. > :29:39.trouble so far, she looks in control -- Kirsten Wild. Lotte Kopecky goes.
:29:40. > :29:42.Amy Cure has ridden it the best so far. She's been watching and didn't
:29:43. > :29:47.try and win the Sprint, just making sure there is people behind. We have
:29:48. > :29:52.barely mentioned her name. That is a good thing tactically because it
:29:53. > :29:56.says that you are just not visible between the wheels. Welcoming you
:29:57. > :30:03.are visible now, just three riders left, match sprint to get into this
:30:04. > :30:07.final dash. Amy Cure going around the outside and Pikulik has nothing
:30:08. > :30:11.left. The tank is empty and the Polish rider is going to finish
:30:12. > :30:14.third. It was a great effort from her, she looks frustrated but she
:30:15. > :30:18.has taken third. Pikulik was a silver medallist in the World Junior
:30:19. > :30:23.Championships in the Omni a few years ago and now on the senior
:30:24. > :30:27.stage and making her mark but it is Amy Cure against Kirsten Wild for
:30:28. > :30:38.the win in the third event of four in the women's omnium, here comes
:30:39. > :30:41.the final sprint, one lap to go, led out by the Australian Kew, Kirsten
:30:42. > :30:44.Wild right on her wheel. How she got the strength to get past her? Amy
:30:45. > :30:47.Cure is not giving way. She will not give way to Kirsten Wild and if she
:30:48. > :30:50.wants to win the Sprint she will have to earn it and she can't come a
:30:51. > :30:53.great ride from Amy Cure of Australia who takes maximum points
:30:54. > :30:58.in the elimination race in the omnium and it was beautifully ridden
:30:59. > :31:00.by Amy Cure all the way through and Kirsten Wild as to settle for second
:31:01. > :31:10.place in this particular event. Just looking at it now, an
:31:11. > :31:15.officially the results suggest that Katie Archibald still leads the way,
:31:16. > :31:20.but she will be level on points with Amy Cure, and Archibald will be
:31:21. > :31:25.leading because she has won two of the races, with Kirsten Wild in
:31:26. > :31:33.third place and Sarah Hammer down to fourth. We are waiting for the
:31:34. > :31:39.confirmation. I was expecting Kirsten Wild to come out from behind
:31:40. > :31:42.her and asked her shoulder. I watched Amy Cure in the previous
:31:43. > :31:47.Sprint make a decision, she is still capable of thinking, I will just do
:31:48. > :31:52.enough, and the only time I thought she might have blown it was when she
:31:53. > :31:56.started to sprint with a lap to go, but clearly she had the confidence,
:31:57. > :32:01.and Kirsten Wild happy to take second. How do you think Katie
:32:02. > :32:05.Archibald will feel about her ride? Was a bit disappointed, she worked
:32:06. > :32:10.hard all the way through, Laura Trott, the best bike rider, male or
:32:11. > :32:14.female, I have ever seen, ride in this race, incredibly tactically
:32:15. > :32:17.astute, knows when to use it. I think Katie Archibald has probably
:32:18. > :32:22.got some more to come from her in this event. She did ride it hard and
:32:23. > :32:26.courageously, still very respectable and she is still right up there. The
:32:27. > :32:31.points have been amended, and she might have just dropped into second
:32:32. > :32:37.position behind Amy Cure who was a good points race rider, so all to
:32:38. > :32:41.play for. The points were amended all our screen in front of us, and
:32:42. > :32:48.as you can see, Amy Cure is the new leader, level on points with Casty
:32:49. > :32:51.-- Katie Archibald. Sarah Hammer is in fourth, and I think the bottom
:32:52. > :32:55.line going into the last race is that it is all to play for.
:32:56. > :33:01.It might have been one thing for you to watch at home, but it was one
:33:02. > :33:08.thing to watch Laura Kenney watching that, because you were constantly
:33:09. > :33:12.flapping! I will admit, it is way worse watching than being there, you
:33:13. > :33:18.are in control when you are doing it, it is just you, but that was
:33:19. > :33:29.stressful. I can't control her, I can't say, no, turnaround! Now you
:33:30. > :33:33.understand how we feel. And she did finally get caught out at the back,
:33:34. > :33:39.but do you think, earlier in the race she very nearly went, and that
:33:40. > :33:43.would have been disastrous for the points. I think it was just a lack
:33:44. > :33:49.of concentration more than anything. When you are in the bunch, you have
:33:50. > :33:52.a good feeling of the people who are around you, and I don't think she
:33:53. > :33:58.relies time many people were going over the top, I think she thought
:33:59. > :34:04.she was safe. That was a tiny margin. That was with 15 riders
:34:05. > :34:08.left, but this was her when she finally did get caught. Was it just
:34:09. > :34:14.a case of not having enough left, or was it positioning? If that was me,
:34:15. > :34:17.I would have tried, in the lap forewings Baniyas has just come out,
:34:18. > :34:21.I would have gone to the front. If you know you haven't got the legs,
:34:22. > :34:25.you are better off to put yourself forward. You want the room to slide
:34:26. > :34:29.back, so you are better off to get to the black line and see what
:34:30. > :34:35.happens from there. But the point is she can still win this. She can, and
:34:36. > :34:40.she has definitely got the legs for it. She will be a little bit gutted
:34:41. > :34:45.with that performance, but it is all to play for. They are now on equal
:34:46. > :34:51.points, but there is still a margin back to third and fourth. She has 35
:34:52. > :34:56.men it is to recover. Is there any benefit to having gone out a couple
:34:57. > :35:03.of minutes earlier than Amy Cure? She can be. She will be cooling down
:35:04. > :35:08.faster. You don't need to warm up for the points race, you need to
:35:09. > :35:17.cool down now to be fresher, said couple of minutes... And four less
:35:18. > :35:22.Sprints in her legs. What would you say to her now? Just relax. She is
:35:23. > :35:26.always in control of the racing, and she needs to make sure she goes in
:35:27. > :35:32.with that mindset that she is still in control. Amy Cure was very lucky
:35:33. > :35:36.to avoid the big crash. She was right behind it, and as we have been
:35:37. > :35:40.saying, there are no brakes on these bikes, so you have to react quickly,
:35:41. > :35:45.she went high to get round them, and she wasn't far off it. Instinctive
:35:46. > :35:51.reaction, and these are the things that can completely derail your
:35:52. > :35:56.medal chances. How will they repair the track? They will basically pull
:35:57. > :36:03.out the bit that has been damaged, fill it in, send it over and put
:36:04. > :36:07.tape over it. It is a bit Heath Robinson. That is what they do. And
:36:08. > :36:15.here we go for the second of the best of three races in the women's
:36:16. > :36:25.sprint semifinals, it is Stephanie Morton against Simona Krupeckaite.
:36:26. > :36:32.So, Stephanie Morton has it all to do, and she showed earlier in the
:36:33. > :36:36.week that she has the form. She has, she has got caught out in the
:36:37. > :36:40.previous ride, and I don't think she will make that mistake again. She is
:36:41. > :36:45.in pole position now and raising the speed very quickly. She wants to
:36:46. > :36:52.keep that front position all the way through. Stephanie Morton going for
:36:53. > :37:00.the element of a drag race here. Simona Krupeckaite forced to open it
:37:01. > :37:03.up a little earlier, and she looks to draw level already inside the
:37:04. > :37:07.final 200 metres, and down the back straight they go, it will be tight.
:37:08. > :37:12.Neck and neck into the finishing straight, Morton is going to hold
:37:13. > :37:17.off here, it is 1-1, and we will go to the decider in this semifinal in
:37:18. > :37:23.the women's sprint. More to did everything she needed to do, she
:37:24. > :37:26.took full control of that one, and Krupeckaite fell into it, I'm
:37:27. > :37:31.afraid, she held it on the hip, saved enough in the back straight to
:37:32. > :37:35.keep up, and that is where it was won, on the back straight. She is
:37:36. > :37:39.doing an extra ten metres of riding by the time they have come around to
:37:40. > :37:46.the line, having spent two bankings trying to get around. It is a lot
:37:47. > :37:49.further on this banked track. We saw that Stephanie Morton definitely had
:37:50. > :37:54.a plan, and that is a good start in a match sprint. Orla Barry healing
:37:55. > :37:58.with, forget defeat, this is all about dealing with this moment, and
:37:59. > :38:06.she was angry after that previous round. And she got even at 1-1. So
:38:07. > :38:13.we still have to have that third race to decide who goes through to
:38:14. > :38:16.compete for the gold medal. We will have to settle for the bronze medal,
:38:17. > :38:30.but it looks like a conveyor belt here, and already up onto the track,
:38:31. > :38:38.Lee Wai Sze from Hong Kong. She was beaten by Kristina Vogel in a
:38:39. > :38:41.titanic sprint in the first race. Packed house watching tonight, let's
:38:42. > :38:42.see if they can help her out, she will need everything they can give
:38:43. > :38:52.her. The harsh among the crowd as
:38:53. > :38:59.Kristina Vogel will lead them off on this first lap.
:39:00. > :39:15.Vogel will be keeping an eye on her opponent, looking for any sudden
:39:16. > :39:22.movement. There won't be any yet, it is far too early for that. 999 times
:39:23. > :39:25.out of a thousand. You do have the odd occasion when somebody suddenly
:39:26. > :39:29.goes for it almost from the gun, but you don't see that very often at
:39:30. > :39:35.all, it is a real leg shredding exercise trying to do that. But Lee
:39:36. > :39:41.Wai Sze flying the flag for the hosts here against Kristina Vogel.
:39:42. > :39:48.Vogel a seven time world champion, she has been twice the champion of
:39:49. > :39:51.the world in the sprint, she won in 2014, in Colombia, and defended it
:39:52. > :40:03.successfully in Paris a couple of years ago. Had to settle for the
:40:04. > :40:10.bronze medal last year. The pace lifting now, with two laps to go,
:40:11. > :40:15.and Vogel now deciding, I am at the front, I may as well use it. As she
:40:16. > :40:18.looks back, that will be the view that Kristina Vogel will have had
:40:19. > :40:23.her opponent, Lee Wai Sze getting larger and larger in her rear-view
:40:24. > :40:26.mirror as the sprint now starts. Inside the final lap, Lee Wai Sze
:40:27. > :40:33.has got a gap to close on Kristina Vogel. Roared on by the crowd, will
:40:34. > :40:38.that carry her home? Will it force a deciding ride? No, it won't, because
:40:39. > :40:42.Kristina Vogel held on at the front, but did she do so legally? In the
:40:43. > :40:47.final bend there was a real flick, and we will have to wait and see
:40:48. > :40:53.what the judges say, but it will have affected the result, so the
:40:54. > :40:57.penultimate ranking or OK, Lee Wai Sze not giving in at all, Vogel
:40:58. > :41:02.outside the sprint line there, and then as they come around into the
:41:03. > :41:07.finishing straight, really drift up. She won't be given that one, I will
:41:08. > :41:12.be very surprised if she is not relegated, particularly since it was
:41:13. > :41:17.close. It was close and it was a very anxious moment for Lee Wai Sze
:41:18. > :41:24.as Kristina Vogel came right up into her, as it were. She probably would
:41:25. > :41:28.have won anyway. Kristina Vogel, nothing has been said so far, she
:41:29. > :41:33.has been given it, but they are having a look. But at the moment, is
:41:34. > :41:37.Kristina Vogel riding around waving to the crowd, a sporting gesture
:41:38. > :41:40.there from Lee Wai Sze, the riders have their arms around each other as
:41:41. > :41:43.they roll around the bottom of the track, but her coaching staff no
:41:44. > :41:47.doubt talking to the officials about it. The officials are taking a look,
:41:48. > :41:53.and this is what they are looking at. Just watch this. It is not a
:41:54. > :41:57.distance, so there you go, it is very, very clear, and I think even
:41:58. > :42:03.Kristina Vogel knows it, to be honest. And she didn't need to do
:42:04. > :42:10.it, there is a very good chance she would have taken that much anyway. I
:42:11. > :42:19.would be amazed, I would bet your salary that that is overturned,
:42:20. > :42:23.Simon. As much as that?! There we are, Kristina Vogel, we wait to hear
:42:24. > :42:25.the outcome. Nothing has been announced by the officials, but as
:42:26. > :42:33.we saw a few moments ago, they were clearly having a look at it. So, at
:42:34. > :42:36.the moment, Kristina Vogel has been awarded race two, meaning she would
:42:37. > :42:39.be through to the final. We will bring you any further developments
:42:40. > :42:45.as and when they occur. CLARE BALDING: Chris, we think that
:42:46. > :42:51.she will be relegated, don't we? 99% sure. She came out of the lane at
:42:52. > :42:58.eight crucial point, and it clearly impeded progress of Lee. And it was
:42:59. > :43:07.dangerous? She did it because she was desperate, she could sense that
:43:08. > :43:12.Lee was approaching. She flicks out, almost hits her front wheel, and Lee
:43:13. > :43:15.has to go the long way round here. Yes, I think the judges... If it
:43:16. > :43:20.doesn't get reversed, I will be surprised. And is there also just a
:43:21. > :43:27.sense of the judges from the pressure of the home crowd? There
:43:28. > :43:29.shouldn't be. I don't know. I would like to think it is completely
:43:30. > :43:34.neutral and there is no favouritism at all, but as an objective
:43:35. > :43:38.observer, you would say that that is a clearly impeding the forward
:43:39. > :43:42.progress of your opponent, so it should be a reversal of the
:43:43. > :43:49.decision. Our stewards hearsay Vogel relegated. I think relegated. As
:43:50. > :43:53.well. So it does mean a little bit more of a David Katie Archibald,
:43:54. > :43:57.because it means both of those races will go to a decider for the women's
:43:58. > :44:00.sprint semifinals, and Katie Archibald jointly in lead of the
:44:01. > :44:04.women's omnium with just the points race to come. The team that
:44:05. > :44:07.surrounds the riders are crucial, and Key among them is the head
:44:08. > :44:13.mechanic, he is called Ernie Faye agreed and he has been talking to
:44:14. > :44:16.John Douglas. There is so much activity in the track centre,
:44:17. > :44:20.certainly around the British pen, because that is where all the bikes
:44:21. > :44:24.are looked after, and Ernie is the man in charge, he has been here for
:44:25. > :44:29.donkeys years! Looking after some very fine pieces of equipment. What
:44:30. > :44:33.is the biggest challenge you have on a big track event like this? The
:44:34. > :44:38.biggest challenges keeping your feet on the ground. We have so many
:44:39. > :44:42.wonderful performances, and for us, we have just won something, but
:44:43. > :44:49.there is always somebody else racing next, so we have to keep our feet on
:44:50. > :44:53.the ground, everything else. I always see you with a spanner or a
:44:54. > :44:59.pump or cloth, what exactly are you doing? Changing the gears, we do
:45:00. > :45:03.that track centre. All of the wheels, they will be prepared in
:45:04. > :45:08.Manchester before we have come, and anything that needs changing, we
:45:09. > :45:11.have a workshop downstairs here, and I have some wheels and a blue and
:45:12. > :45:15.tyres already waiting, and that will be a job tomorrow morning. It is a
:45:16. > :45:20.lot of logistics to get to somewhere like Hong Kong, I know often you
:45:21. > :45:24.with the team drive a van to various events, but that is not possible
:45:25. > :45:29.from Manchester to Hong Kong! Thankfully not. We have done really
:45:30. > :45:34.well this time, we brought 123 items, three and a half tonnes of
:45:35. > :45:38.equipment, which is madness. I think the only time we have done better
:45:39. > :45:41.than that was the Rio Olympics. So we checked it all in on the
:45:42. > :45:45.Wednesday, then we rolled up on Thursday morning and checked in like
:45:46. > :45:50.a tourist, I can't remember the last time I have done that. And one of
:45:51. > :45:53.the things we notice is a lot of the other teams are around having a look
:45:54. > :45:56.to see what you have got, and you keep an eye on the other teams to
:45:57. > :46:01.see what innovations they have got. A lot of people talking about the
:46:02. > :46:05.way the British teams have invested in the technology, has that been
:46:06. > :46:08.exciting to see? It is always exciting, you come out every four
:46:09. > :46:12.years with something new, and you can see no a few teams have gone to
:46:13. > :46:16.the larger chain rings like we ran out in Rio, and a few people when we
:46:17. > :46:21.had the wider forks in London, they came out with those. So it is quite
:46:22. > :46:26.comical, really. People trying to play catch up with us, but we are
:46:27. > :46:30.always a few steps ahead. You have to try to keep the team happy. The
:46:31. > :46:32.riders have quite a say in the setup of their bikes. Is it difficult
:46:33. > :46:40.managing that? Not really, lots of the riders are
:46:41. > :46:43.really good, especially the younger group we have coming through, that
:46:44. > :46:48.have been in the system and come up from juniors and have come now into
:46:49. > :46:52.seniors. I will not say the awkward ones, the ones that know exactly
:46:53. > :46:56.what they want and how they like it are not with us at the moment,
:46:57. > :46:59.Cavendish would no one millimetre or two millimetres which is really good
:47:00. > :47:04.when working with an athlete like that, Laura Kenny knows half a
:47:05. > :47:12.millimetre in her saddle height. What about Joe and Chris back in the
:47:13. > :47:15.studio. They always said please and thank you and you always find an
:47:16. > :47:18.athlete that remembers their manners goes that bit further and you always
:47:19. > :47:22.think about them that bit more and you always go that little step
:47:23. > :47:31.extra. I always remember my please and thank you s. Thank you. Any
:47:32. > :47:34.further grieve is really good, when he came upon the screen you went
:47:35. > :47:40.there is Ernie Feargrieve. he came upon the screen you went
:47:41. > :47:45.there is Ernie He has been around since back in the dark ages. All of
:47:46. > :47:47.the backroom staff work so hard, we are the ones that get the medals and
:47:48. > :47:53.attention but we couldn't have done it without them. For sure. They are
:47:54. > :47:57.under so much pressure, on race day if something goes wrong and there is
:47:58. > :48:01.a crash he needs to do a quick wheel change committee is a professional
:48:02. > :48:07.and comment as a rider Unibet on race day when you can see it as
:48:08. > :48:12.minutes to go until your race -- you need that on race day. How many
:48:13. > :48:16.people can he look after at the same time? Two mechanics tend to go to
:48:17. > :48:20.the World Championships and they will alternate, say if there was a
:48:21. > :48:24.Sprint first Bernie will take that rider first and then if I was the
:48:25. > :48:29.next rider for example but they look after a fair number of riders
:48:30. > :48:34.between them. As far as we are aware Kristina Vogel has not been
:48:35. > :48:37.relegated so she is through, we think, almost certainly come out of
:48:38. > :48:40.the last Dominic final of the women's sprint despite looking as if
:48:41. > :48:45.she had come out of the sprinting lane and put league in danger. So
:48:46. > :48:48.far the stewards have not overturned that decision. Cameron Meyer won the
:48:49. > :48:52.men's points race for Australia earlier and in seventh place was
:48:53. > :48:54.Mark Stewart for Great Britain and this was his reaction to the
:48:55. > :48:58.performance. You've had a few minutes to get over
:48:59. > :49:03.the huge effort in the points race, great start for you, but it was a
:49:04. > :49:06.world-class, as you would expect, points race. Everybody going into it
:49:07. > :49:11.with my and the kettle in the field, knew it would be a hard race so I
:49:12. > :49:15.just thought I need to be part of this from the start and if my legs
:49:16. > :49:20.last until the start Dominic and fantastic but I started to fade. Big
:49:21. > :49:24.step up in your first world seniors, you were leading after the first
:49:25. > :49:27.half-dozen sprints. Yeah, definitely, we've been focusing on
:49:28. > :49:32.the team pursuit but I still enjoy the points so I knew coming into it
:49:33. > :49:37.that it would be a tough ask. It is always fun doing it am suffering!
:49:38. > :49:42.You watch somebody like Cameron Meyer lift his eighth world title,
:49:43. > :49:46.you know, with a performance like that, it must serve as huge
:49:47. > :49:49.inspiration to somebody like you. Massively, I watched him growing up
:49:50. > :50:02.dominating points races and now I'm on the back of it. It is massive
:50:03. > :50:07.watching team pursuit and then that, something else. It should make for a
:50:08. > :50:11.really interesting competition at the Gold Coast at the Commonwealth
:50:12. > :50:15.Games. I'm looking forward to it, an opportunity to work on the points
:50:16. > :50:20.races and the scratch next year, so hopefully I will suffer to the end.
:50:21. > :50:26.Thank you very much. Mark Stewart, who is still only 21,
:50:27. > :50:30.so he has a lot still ahead of him, and to watch somebody like Cameron
:50:31. > :50:33.Meyer, what do you try and learn from your championship experiences
:50:34. > :50:36.from somebody that good? He will look back at the videos of racing to
:50:37. > :50:42.begin with, a good way to learn, we do it in team pursuit and the omnium
:50:43. > :50:45.races, analysing the video from the racing definitely. For him it will
:50:46. > :50:48.be onto the road for the road season. We are mid April so it's
:50:49. > :51:00.quite late in the road season compared to a normal taxis and. I am
:51:01. > :51:03.sure he will be keen to get plenty of racing under his belt this summer
:51:04. > :51:05.ready to go for the next track season come September and
:51:06. > :51:07.Commonwealth Games will be the big one for Scotland in a year's time.
:51:08. > :51:10.How difficult is it switching from road to track, how different are the
:51:11. > :51:13.bikes? Brakes on a road bike, you can change the gears at the flick of
:51:14. > :51:16.a lever rather than getting out spammers and everything. That is
:51:17. > :51:20.handy. Both very lightweight bikes but the brakes and gears are the
:51:21. > :51:23.main thing. For me physically I found it quite difficult to go from
:51:24. > :51:26.the track to the road and vice versa. The road to the track is
:51:27. > :51:33.easier but going from the track to the road, you had the top end but
:51:34. > :51:36.the endurance of racing 4-for ours was challenging. Going back to the
:51:37. > :51:40.bikes, they do not have any of the bikes from Rio, do they? No, the way
:51:41. > :51:44.British cycling works is you get the equipment for the Olympics because
:51:45. > :51:48.you get such an advantage by having the most aerodynamic kit out there
:51:49. > :51:54.and afterwards it goes back into keeping again. It is not because
:51:55. > :51:58.they are broken? I heard some of them are cracked. Some of them were
:51:59. > :52:03.broken. Mine came back absolutely fine and I could have ridden it. It
:52:04. > :52:11.is because you have taken good care about it. Yeah, I mean, you sort of
:52:12. > :52:14.expected, we want the best kit at the Olympics, do you know what I
:52:15. > :52:18.mean? It doesn't matter it gets taken back into keeping and you get
:52:19. > :52:22.it back out again for the Olympics. Other nations tend to bring in new
:52:23. > :52:25.equipment and developments in stages so you see the overall package
:52:26. > :52:30.including but we keep it under the radar until the big day. It has been
:52:31. > :52:36.a quick turnaround for the sprinters because Stephanie Morton, having won
:52:37. > :52:39.the second race in a decided now. We will find out from Simon Brotherton
:52:40. > :52:43.and Chris Boardman whether Voegele kept the second race or if we will
:52:44. > :52:51.see a decider between her and Lee why see. -- Lee Wai Sze. We are
:52:52. > :52:56.about to go in the deciding race, Stephanie Morton against Ramona
:52:57. > :52:59.Krupeckaite. The only way we will know for sure whether Voegele and
:53:00. > :53:02.leak step up to the track after this race because all of the official
:53:03. > :53:06.computers are saying Kristina Vogel is through so we have to assume that
:53:07. > :53:09.is the case but there have been a few discrepancies between what the
:53:10. > :53:12.stylists said and what the riders who have been racing at various
:53:13. > :53:21.points over the last few days. We just wait and see. I believe
:53:22. > :53:26.Kristina Vogel was not penalised. Remarkable decision if that is the
:53:27. > :53:29.case with such clear-cut video evidence and the rules are very
:53:30. > :53:37.clear, you cannot come out into that line and in need the progress of
:53:38. > :53:40.your competitor. -- impede the progress of your competitor. It is
:53:41. > :53:43.rough justice if that is the outcome. No sign of the other riders
:53:44. > :53:48.getting ready to come out but we will keep a on this race between
:53:49. > :53:53.Stephanie Morton and Simona Krupeckaite. Down the back straight
:53:54. > :53:58.they go. Morton is keeping the pace fairly high as she did in race two.
:53:59. > :54:01.It is a tactic that worked well for her and she wants to employ it
:54:02. > :54:05.again. It is whether her opponent has learned the lesson and she
:54:06. > :54:10.certainly waited a bit longer, for the back straight, trying to use the
:54:11. > :54:13.slipstream. I'm not sure she has the pace. Into the finishing straight
:54:14. > :54:17.they come and Simona Krupeckaite will not do this and Stephanie
:54:18. > :54:22.Morton has turned this semifinal around having lost the first ride,
:54:23. > :54:26.she changed her tactics, the first maxim tactics in races two and three
:54:27. > :54:31.and they worked a treat and carried her through into the championship
:54:32. > :54:35.final. Also just dipped outside the
:54:36. > :54:41.sprinter's line. Just intimidating the opponent, leaving them uncertain
:54:42. > :54:44.exactly where you are going to be on the track so you can't maximise the
:54:45. > :54:50.slipstream. But compared to what we've seen already that was no
:54:51. > :54:55.infraction at all. But either way I don't think it was going to make a
:54:56. > :54:59.difference there. She was by far the stronger rider. That often happens
:55:00. > :55:07.as the competition progresses, those who come back-up. Confirmation that
:55:08. > :55:11.Kristina Vogel has indeed been awarded the second ride, so through
:55:12. > :55:14.in straight rights against Lee Wai Sze, we are surprised about that, we
:55:15. > :55:18.thought there was a rule infringement. The official decided
:55:19. > :55:24.otherwise. Stephanie Morton is through to the final and will race
:55:25. > :55:27.Kristina Vogel. It will be Lee Wai Sze from Hong Kong against Simona
:55:28. > :55:31.Krupeckaite go from Romania for the bronze medal. There is the
:55:32. > :55:37.confirmation of who is through for the gold-medal race. STUDIO: Morton
:55:38. > :55:41.against Voegele will be a fabulous race but Voegele is lucky to be
:55:42. > :55:46.there. Very lucky, I would have put money on the fact Voegele would be
:55:47. > :55:49.there, she was impeding the progress of league and I'm very surprised. In
:55:50. > :55:55.the meantime the only thing we sort of missed was Christian Meyer...
:55:56. > :55:58.Cameron Meyer, sorry, being awarded the gold medal in the men's points
:55:59. > :56:03.race, and eighth World Championship title for him, but it's been quite a
:56:04. > :56:06.gap since the last World Championships he was successful
:56:07. > :56:10.outcome his second of this meeting, the team pursuit as well, after that
:56:11. > :56:14.he spoke John Douglas -- Jill Douglas.
:56:15. > :56:18.Graduations, you wait five years for another rainbow jersey and two come
:56:19. > :56:23.along at once, that was a classy points race, a masterclass in riding
:56:24. > :56:27.a points race. It was definitely special and to back up after last
:56:28. > :56:32.night's wind with the guys in the team pursuit, it is great, still one
:56:33. > :56:35.more race on Sunday so hopefully the legs will hold on for one more but I
:56:36. > :56:38.can't be happier than I am now. The rest of the field cursing the fact
:56:39. > :56:42.you have come back to the track from the road because you are making them
:56:43. > :56:48.pay. How does it feel when you are so strong and able to dominate the
:56:49. > :56:51.race like you did. It feels good, you must be confident going out
:56:52. > :56:55.there and that is what I try to beat when I go out there, if it gets into
:56:56. > :56:59.the last half of the race when it is a really hard event, I can be one of
:57:00. > :57:04.the strongest, and hopefully it is my night and tonight was. It is your
:57:05. > :57:07.eighth world title, how special is that, to think potentially you have
:57:08. > :57:13.a great chance in the Madison as well? Everyone is special, every
:57:14. > :57:18.time you pull on the rainbow jersey there is a special moment and there
:57:19. > :57:23.is a story from it and I love every minute so hopefully there are more
:57:24. > :57:30.to come. He seems like such a nice guy. There we see, is that the
:57:31. > :57:35.French rider getting ready for the individual pursuit. This is your
:57:36. > :57:38.field of expertise. I do love a pursuit, I might be biased, it was
:57:39. > :57:42.the event I was originally talent spotted for and have had some
:57:43. > :57:46.success. Some people say it is boring but I think a close
:57:47. > :57:50.individual pursuit race can be something special when the lead
:57:51. > :57:55.switches between the two riders. The times this morning for the
:57:56. > :57:59.qualifying, I was blown away by. 4.12 by the quickest rider for the
:58:00. > :58:04.gold medal final. For the Australian rider who is only 18 he has
:58:05. > :58:09.qualified for the bronze ride off, so fantastic young talent here and
:58:10. > :58:15.there should be some good finals. 4000 metres ahead of them, one stars
:58:16. > :58:23.one side of the track and the other starts the other. Here is Simon
:58:24. > :58:29.Brotherton. COMMENTATOR: Kelland O'Brien, Corentin Ermenault, at 21.
:58:30. > :58:35.He can't be going back quick at 18! Chris used to race against Corentin
:58:36. > :58:41.Ermenault's dad, didn't you? Thank you! I thought I would mention that
:58:42. > :58:45.one, get that in quick. You are laughing now but you just lost your
:58:46. > :58:49.salary over that Sprint decision. 30 seconds to go until this bronze
:58:50. > :58:53.medal ride. Sometimes there is speculation about the air pressure
:58:54. > :58:57.here which has a big effect on performance, 90% of the energy of
:58:58. > :59:02.these riders is pushing air out of the way. We had one report it was
:59:03. > :59:07.down to 828 millibars, which is remarkable. The British team say
:59:08. > :59:10.that isn't the case but there must be some reason why the whole series
:59:11. > :59:21.was so fast. And away they go then, the bronze
:59:22. > :59:24.medal on the line for these two riders, Kelland O'Brien of
:59:25. > :59:27.Australia, who already has a gold medal in his pocket for these
:59:28. > :59:33.championships having the Dummett been part of the pursuit squad, he
:59:34. > :59:39.won gold yesterday, can he add to his tally today? Corentin Ermenault,
:59:40. > :59:43.on the other side of the track, the European champion who races on the
:59:44. > :59:48.road also and shows campus a durable promise. He was third in the under
:59:49. > :59:55.23 Tour of Flanders last year. He is a big lad, the Frenchman, Corentin
:59:56. > :00:00.Ermenault, bigger than his dad, both of them had a similar opening
:00:01. > :00:03.kilometre earlier today. Despite that, two seconds between them
:00:04. > :00:08.already with less than a minute of racing under their belt so O'Brien
:00:09. > :00:13.has gone storming out of the gate. Blistering start by Kelland O'Brien
:00:14. > :00:16.and Ermenault looking to get a medal at the World Championships but he
:00:17. > :00:22.will have to go some in the future to match his father, twice the world
:00:23. > :00:26.champion in this discipline in 1997 and 1998. But he has a lot to do to
:00:27. > :00:31.claim the bronze medal here because the Australian with a 1.0603,
:00:32. > :00:35.opening kilometre. Fastest opening kilometre of the session so far.
:00:36. > :00:40.Faster than anything this morning, that is world-record pace he is
:00:41. > :00:43.riding out at the moment. Has he gone to quick? Information from the
:00:44. > :00:47.coach at the side of the track, he is 2.5 seconds ahead of the
:00:48. > :00:53.Frenchman at the moment. Every indication is he has gone out to
:00:54. > :00:57.quick, 1.06 is quick for a pursuit. We have seen it once or twice from
:00:58. > :01:01.Australians in the individual pursuit, Jack Bow Bridge went out
:01:02. > :01:05.very quickly and he managed to stay out in front with a very fast time
:01:06. > :01:09.on several occasions but I remember one or two times when he blew up
:01:10. > :01:13.having gone charging out of the gate. But O'Brien is dominating at
:01:14. > :01:17.this moment in time against Ermenault over 2.5 seconds up.
:01:18. > :01:24.Ermenault is holding his own. He just slipped another temper the
:01:25. > :01:28.second but pretty much he is holding it there. O'Brien is clearly backing
:01:29. > :01:33.up well. Eight laps to go for O'Brien who is looking really strong
:01:34. > :01:38.here. 2.10 he was this morning when he went through two kilometres, two
:01:39. > :01:44.minutes and eight seconds. So he is faster than he was in the qualifying
:01:45. > :01:49.session. That puts him on 13 at the moment, around 4.13, I think he
:01:50. > :01:53.might slip off that a bit, 4.14 which would still be a tremendous
:01:54. > :01:57.ride. How does this work if you are the Frenchman on the track and your
:01:58. > :02:01.opponent suddenly takes it to you very early in the race? Do you stick
:02:02. > :02:06.to your plan? You cannot chase your opponent early in the race. That is
:02:07. > :02:15.why the riders are shown a schedule based on a predetermined pace that
:02:16. > :02:18.they have decided they can achieve at the start of the race. Only in
:02:19. > :02:20.the last kilometre does it become emotional and then it is about what
:02:21. > :02:23.the opposition is doing and what have I got to give and how much I
:02:24. > :02:26.can hurt myself. Write to the schedule you think you can handle.
:02:27. > :02:28.Three quarters of the race, the first kilometre is the most
:02:29. > :02:30.dangerous because you are not suffering yet and have not got
:02:31. > :02:34.regulation from your own body, you must do it externally and shout
:02:35. > :02:38.self-discipline. Into the final four laps, three and a half to go for the
:02:39. > :02:42.Australian who, as it stands, just has to stay upright on his bike to
:02:43. > :02:47.ensure that the bronze medal will be his but this impressive stuff from
:02:48. > :02:51.Kelland O'Brien. He is heading for a 14, the time is important as well as
:02:52. > :02:54.the result at this stage of the competition. Still heading for a
:02:55. > :03:03.roundabout eight 14, I would say. Really starting to feel it now. You
:03:04. > :03:06.can see it. -- for a round about a 14. Confident he can hold back to
:03:07. > :03:12.the line. The camera shot waits for a while for the Frenchman to come
:03:13. > :03:15.into view. It is an empty shop for a second or two. But the Australian
:03:16. > :03:18.will come round and take the bell now, one lap to go for Kelland
:03:19. > :03:22.O'Brien who is on for a very fast time as he will claim the bronze
:03:23. > :03:28.medal against Corentin Ermenault from France. 15 maybe now. He is
:03:29. > :03:34.really rocking and rolling, can he hang on the line? It is a very
:03:35. > :03:36.respectable time either way. He has died off. He lost his way a little
:03:37. > :03:46.in the final lap and a half. In a race like this it was all about
:03:47. > :03:50.beating the rider on the other side of the track. He lost his way,
:03:51. > :03:56.didn't he, in the first couple of laps of that race, and that is a
:03:57. > :04:01.little bit of inexperience perhaps, but opening kilometre, he was always
:04:02. > :04:04.going to pay a price for that. But he didn't overcook it by so much
:04:05. > :04:09.that it was a complete explosion, just faded in the last two laps.
:04:10. > :04:13.Still a solid time. Still plenty of time to get the balance right,
:04:14. > :04:18.plenty of potential showing from Kelland O'Brien, just 18 years old.
:04:19. > :04:29.You are going to tell me he is nine! Can I race against his dad? You
:04:30. > :04:31.didn't, no. Corentin Ermenault following in the tracks of his
:04:32. > :04:36.father and getting himself into a middle position. His line on the
:04:37. > :04:40.track is quite interesting, because they are actually towing uphill
:04:41. > :04:45.slightly, scrubbing off little bits of speed, and with this level of
:04:46. > :04:49.fatigue, you never get that back. Another medal for Australia's
:04:50. > :04:56.collection this week, looking good in the medal standings as we prepare
:04:57. > :05:00.ourselves for the World Championship final, the race for gold just a
:05:01. > :05:07.couple of minutes away with another Australian rider, Jordan Kirby from
:05:08. > :05:13.Queensland. The national pursuit champion for 2017, and he will face
:05:14. > :05:18.the defending champion from Italy on the other side of the track, he
:05:19. > :05:29.races on the road 14 emirates, that is Filippo Ganna, and he already has
:05:30. > :05:35.a medal here in the pursuit, but Ganna is a wonderful talent on the
:05:36. > :05:43.road as well as the track. It is all about a big effort here mill for
:05:44. > :05:48.just over four minutes. Ganna, the defending champion, against Kerby
:05:49. > :05:52.from Australia. Win or lose, they will both want to set a fast time,
:05:53. > :05:56.it is all about the medals but these riders want to see just how good
:05:57. > :06:01.they can be and put markers down for the future.
:06:02. > :06:09.And away they go in the World Championship individual pursuit
:06:10. > :06:20.final. Jordan Kirby also races on the road as well as Ganna. . Look at
:06:21. > :06:23.that face, the aggression with this start, he came out with that first
:06:24. > :06:27.kilometre in the qualifying ride, and he looks to me like a man who
:06:28. > :06:36.will try to have a crack at the world title. He is not going to get
:06:37. > :06:39.the catch this time, which makes a difference. Both riders settling
:06:40. > :06:43.into their rhythm with a couple of laps completed.
:06:44. > :06:52.Oh, what has happened? That is very an usual. The gun has fired, both
:06:53. > :06:56.riders looked up, and the Australian kept going, and Ganna certainly
:06:57. > :07:02.eased up. He thought there was some sort of does qualification. And they
:07:03. > :07:06.have stopped the race now. Is that a malfunction? Has begun gone off of
:07:07. > :07:09.its own accord? Whatever it is, the riders are not the ones that should
:07:10. > :07:20.pay the penalty for a technical mishap. We were a minute into the
:07:21. > :07:25.race, so it wasn't a false start, so it looks like it might be a
:07:26. > :07:28.technical fault. We will find are to get you that information. Luckily
:07:29. > :07:32.they were not too far into the race. What a dramatic situation here, but
:07:33. > :07:35.they certainly put in a lot of effort in the opening lap, I think
:07:36. > :07:42.that must be an electronic malfunction. I think all you can do
:07:43. > :07:48.is let them have a rest and then restart that race. Nothing to do
:07:49. > :07:53.with the athletes as far as I am concerned, the coaches are looking
:07:54. > :08:00.mystified. They will have to have a break and move onto something else?
:08:01. > :08:02.It is unprecedented, to be list. I can't see what is being said other
:08:03. > :08:26.side of the track. Didn't quite... The Australian
:08:27. > :08:32.coaching staff deep in conversation there. Millions of people trying to
:08:33. > :08:39.eavesdrop on that conversation, but the cameraman far too polite to get
:08:40. > :08:45.right in their faces. We will bring you an update on that as soon as
:08:46. > :08:48.possible. I have never seen this in a race like this. There wouldn't
:08:49. > :08:54.have been an infringement by one of the riders that could have caused
:08:55. > :08:59.that, I can't imagine. Being so far into the race as well, unusual. It
:09:00. > :09:04.can't be anything to do with the start, it was so far into the race,
:09:05. > :09:07.it would be unfair and incompetent to have not realised that long since
:09:08. > :09:12.the start of the race before the gun. The gun went off three times
:09:13. > :09:16.before the Italian rider actually stopped. The riders wouldn't have
:09:17. > :09:19.expected it, there wouldn't have been any reason for them to expect
:09:20. > :09:25.it, so they wouldn't have been sure what it was, whether it actually was
:09:26. > :09:29.the starter's gun going off again something else inside the stadium.
:09:30. > :09:34.It looks like they are heading for an immediate restart, which you can
:09:35. > :09:40.with endurance athletes. They have both put out pretty much the same
:09:41. > :09:43.amount of effort. But it might have put paid to any attempt on a world
:09:44. > :09:48.record which would be a crying shame, he has already set the third
:09:49. > :09:55.fastest time in the world earlier today. And unexpected hurdle for
:09:56. > :09:59.these two to deal with. Filippo Ganna looks calm as he rides around
:10:00. > :10:06.the bottom of the track. The Italian coaching staff are calm, as well.
:10:07. > :10:12.These riders now must just get ready to do it all again, and
:10:13. > :10:17.psychologically build-up to this final. What you think they are
:10:18. > :10:25.doing? Are they looking at the race programme to determine where to put
:10:26. > :10:27.this final? I think we are trying to work out what is on that piece of
:10:28. > :10:43.paper. Well, it is taking them a while to
:10:44. > :10:47.make a decision. And that is why you have got the Blaze, because you have
:10:48. > :10:51.to make the call, and they can pretty much do what they want,
:10:52. > :11:02.because their word is final and there is no right of appeal.
:11:03. > :11:06.Interesting the two plans of the riders, Ganna has decided to sit on
:11:07. > :11:09.the chair, but the Australian rider is riding around on a road bike on
:11:10. > :11:18.the smallest gear just to keep his legs turning.
:11:19. > :11:26.Still awaiting a final decision, but maybe one will be forthcoming
:11:27. > :11:40.shortly here. Here comes the chief Blaze to explain.
:11:41. > :11:49.They are going to start it from scratch.
:11:50. > :11:59.So, both squads will have to get ready from this final once again.
:12:00. > :12:02.What a farcical situation here, no suggestion there was an infringement
:12:03. > :12:07.by either of the athletes, but they are having to pay the price and deal
:12:08. > :12:10.with it. The rules say that after the first half lap, the race will
:12:11. > :12:20.not be stopped even if there was a mishap.
:12:21. > :12:26.Ganna's bike is being brought back to the track, followed by one of the
:12:27. > :12:29.officials, and it does seem as if they will not have any time in
:12:30. > :12:33.between these races, or any longer, and they will have to go from
:12:34. > :12:38.scratch again in the next minute or two. I have just been muddied up on
:12:39. > :12:44.the rules, it is not a part of the book we get into often, I have blown
:12:45. > :12:49.the dust off. It says in the finals in the event of a mishap before the
:12:50. > :12:52.final kilometre, the riders shall restart from their position within a
:12:53. > :12:57.maximum period of five minutes, so they are just, rightly so, they have
:12:58. > :13:03.decided to just start this thing again, and I think everybody will be
:13:04. > :13:08.happy with that. As much as anything here now, it will be who can back
:13:09. > :13:12.that initial effort. Presumably we can forget about the times, is it
:13:13. > :13:17.not about the time so much? The beauty of an endurance, unlike the
:13:18. > :13:20.sprinter who can do so much damage in ten seconds, the during the
:13:21. > :13:25.riders, that will barely affect them, less than a minute's riding,
:13:26. > :13:29.blown away the cobwebs, they have had a few minutes, they are
:13:30. > :13:32.completely composed, it will have almost no bearing on the place apart
:13:33. > :13:36.from the psychological effect to see which one of them cope better with
:13:37. > :13:42.the fact that they have just started their shot at a world title and then
:13:43. > :13:48.had to do it all over again. Two very young riders here, Kerby at 24,
:13:49. > :13:52.Ganna at 20, the defending world champion. And here we go. Let's hope
:13:53. > :13:57.for more success at the second attempt here. The world individual
:13:58. > :14:04.pursuit final. Australia against Italy.
:14:05. > :14:10.If the gun goes off any time in the next few laps, I think it will be
:14:11. > :14:14.ignored by both parties! Let's hope so. They knew it was OK, and a quick
:14:15. > :14:21.scan across the track would tell them their opponent is OK. That
:14:22. > :14:25.aggression still there in Kerby's face, perhaps a little less
:14:26. > :14:29.pronounced than it was before, but we are expecting a fast opening
:14:30. > :14:36.kilometre from him, he is the faster of the two over the opening laps.
:14:37. > :14:41.His countryman has already posted 1.6. Is he still of a mind to go
:14:42. > :14:53.after that world title? Kerby has the advantage by almost a second
:14:54. > :15:00.over the Italian, Ganna. This is the sort of start they posted before, a
:15:01. > :15:04.second between them, so not unusual, but Kerby perhaps turning it on a
:15:05. > :15:11.little bit earlier than he was before, curious hand position he has
:15:12. > :15:14.got there. You are not actually supposed to do that, you are
:15:15. > :15:20.supposed to hold the handlebars properly, and your arms must be
:15:21. > :15:24.roughly parallel to the ground. He may not be head of the secret
:15:25. > :15:30.squirrel club any more, but not much gets past you, Chris! He is two
:15:31. > :15:34.tense of a second faster than this morning, so he is to long for the
:15:35. > :15:39.world record pace, he looks well on top of it. Let's hope he has plenty
:15:40. > :15:42.left in the tank for the laps that remain, of which there are plenty,
:15:43. > :15:46.ten laps to go as they cross the line this time. Kerby from Australia
:15:47. > :15:55.with a big advantage over Ganna from Italy. 2:09.02 we are looking for if
:15:56. > :16:00.he is to have a shot at that world-record time. High on the
:16:01. > :16:05.track, so extra distance, but physically looks on top of it. He
:16:06. > :16:09.has eight is gap because Ganna is going slower than in qualifying. He
:16:10. > :16:14.is not really getting it going, Ganna. Let's see how it goes as they
:16:15. > :16:21.cross the line once more with eight laps to go. On for a long 13 at the
:16:22. > :16:27.moment, not on world-record pace at the moment. But the non-cycling
:16:28. > :16:30.fans, that is still pretty quick. Still probably in the top ten times
:16:31. > :16:37.ever recorded if he continues at this pace, he has almost got to
:16:38. > :16:41.Ganna in his sights, he is coming into the straight as Ganna leaves
:16:42. > :16:47.it, two second is the difference between them nearly now. Ganna has a
:16:48. > :16:52.lot to do if he is to be competitive in this World Championship final,
:16:53. > :16:55.almost two second ban the Australian, and as he went into the
:16:56. > :16:59.back straight, Ganna was just leaving it at the opposite end.
:17:00. > :17:04.Kerby has the advantage, just over two seconds no, but his face is
:17:05. > :17:08.starting to show fatigue. He has about a minute and a quarter of
:17:09. > :17:11.racing left to do. And as he tries to close in on the Italian rider,
:17:12. > :17:15.probably the length of a straight behind him now. At what point does
:17:16. > :17:21.he start to get some benefit from following the Italian? You get
:17:22. > :17:24.benefit just from somebody being on the track, but it increases the
:17:25. > :17:29.closer you get. You can see him looking across the track, and you
:17:30. > :17:34.know he is in with a likelihood of taking a world title, three seconds
:17:35. > :17:38.ahead now, so he will be riding a wave of euphoria. This is a great
:17:39. > :17:42.ride from the Australian, a massive advantage over the defending
:17:43. > :17:47.champion, Filippo Ganna from Italy. You can see the pain of the effort
:17:48. > :17:51.etched on his face, but Kerby has only got to keep it going for two
:17:52. > :17:55.more laps now. He will hear the bell next time around, and the advantage
:17:56. > :17:59.has gone way out, over three and a half seconds. There is only one
:18:00. > :18:04.winner of this final, and it will be another gold medal for Australia,
:18:05. > :18:08.and Jordan Kerby takes the bell. He can see his opponent, this will be a
:18:09. > :18:13.wonderful final lap, to know it is all yours, you have just got to see
:18:14. > :18:18.at home. He could even ease up with four seconds advantage. A phenomenal
:18:19. > :18:30.ride from Jordan Kerby, not put off by the false tarte, here he comes to
:18:31. > :18:35.the line, 4:17.06, he has won with time to spare. He takes the gold in
:18:36. > :18:40.style, Australia first and third in the men's individual pursuit. They
:18:41. > :18:44.almost swept the board, Ganna sandwich between the with the silver
:18:45. > :18:52.medal, but Australia dominant in the pursuit. Dominant across endurance
:18:53. > :18:55.disciplines at the moment, they are having a fantastic World
:18:56. > :18:58.Championship, more events that they are favoured into, as well. He is
:18:59. > :19:03.pleased with that, really died off towards the end of that ride, but he
:19:04. > :19:06.took the world title, and that is really what matters here. He was not
:19:07. > :19:13.knocked off his stride either with all the mucking around with the gun
:19:14. > :19:17.miss firing in the live the race. He kept his composure, Stade cool, let
:19:18. > :19:20.it all happened around him. And then he went back to the start line and
:19:21. > :19:24.raced as if it was the first time rather than the second time that
:19:25. > :19:30.they tried to get the final under way. There was never any doubt who
:19:31. > :19:36.was going to win from the start of the Finnish. Interestingly, both of
:19:37. > :19:43.those rides were slower than the bronze medal ride off. So it did
:19:44. > :19:46.affect them. That is why I think O'Brien would have loved to have set
:19:47. > :19:53.a fast time, just to prove to himself and every body else that I'm
:19:54. > :19:55.a medal contender for the future. More celebrations for the
:19:56. > :20:06.Australians and their families who have made the journey, a very
:20:07. > :20:09.special moment, and the medal and the rainbow jersey will be placed
:20:10. > :20:15.around his neck a little later on, but Jordan Kerby, rational pursuit
:20:16. > :20:19.champion of Australia, now the world champion is well with a thoroughly
:20:20. > :20:27.compounds of rioting of Filippo Ganna from Italy. Golden
:20:28. > :20:29.championship for Australia continues, with Kelland O'Brien
:20:30. > :20:38.having taken the bronze medal as well ahead of current in, and there
:20:39. > :20:44.is Cameron Meyer, who won his latest rainbow journey a little earlier on
:20:45. > :20:51.in the points race. Waiting his turn to celebrate with his team-mate.
:20:52. > :20:57.There is a lot of hugging to be done in that camp. Golden day for
:20:58. > :20:59.Australia continues. Two goals so far this afternoon. Cameron Meyer
:21:00. > :21:05.and now Jordan Kerby as well in the individual pursuit.
:21:06. > :21:10.STUDIO: Australia are making a massive statement, they were
:21:11. > :21:13.determined to do so having underperformed and been disappointed
:21:14. > :21:18.coming out of the real Olympics saying they needed to rebuild and
:21:19. > :21:22.that's the way to do it, taking advantage, nobody expected him to.
:21:23. > :21:26.We have seen it at the London and Beijing, the Aussies came back
:21:27. > :21:32.strongly. It is no surprise. The key now is to keep this going, and build
:21:33. > :21:35.on it and hit their best form when it counts in Tokyo. At the end of
:21:36. > :21:39.the day it is a World Championship, the rainbow jerseys are on offer,
:21:40. > :21:43.everybody wants to be world champion so it is a really important race.
:21:44. > :21:46.They could have two more to come today, Stephanie Morton up against
:21:47. > :21:51.Kristina Vogel in the gold-medal race for the women's sprint and Amy
:21:52. > :21:55.Cure is level on points with Katie Archibald at the top of the Omnium.
:21:56. > :21:59.I warn you now they are running 25 minutes behind in Hong Kong and
:22:00. > :22:02.because of the weather schedule is on Good Friday we cannot overrun on
:22:03. > :22:06.BBC Two so we will show you the conclusion of Katie's race on the
:22:07. > :22:10.red button, you will see the whole of it on the red button from the
:22:11. > :22:12.beginning but will have to come off air in BBC Two some work in the
:22:13. > :22:22.middle of it which is obviously not ideal but I am giving you due
:22:23. > :22:25.warning of it, it will be 80 laps. I just mention the fact Amy Cure is
:22:26. > :22:28.level on points, not because I want to say Katie cannot still went, she
:22:29. > :22:31.can. But when your team, Australia for example, are on a run does that
:22:32. > :22:36.make a difference? You know what it's like for Great Britain when you
:22:37. > :22:38.guys are doing it. I said it at the Olympics when one person Gobern out
:22:39. > :22:42.of the way and the men's team pursuit put it on the board you are
:22:43. > :22:46.on the way and it gives team a momentum. On the other foot we
:22:47. > :22:51.haven't got a gold medal yet so Katie will be thinking I want the
:22:52. > :22:55.first gold medal for Great Britain. It is neither here nor there and in
:22:56. > :22:58.the points race there is no advantage for either of them so it
:22:59. > :23:03.is basically a stand-alone points race. The women's sprint finals
:23:04. > :23:06.coming very shortly. The bronze medal race. This could be a chance
:23:07. > :23:12.of a medal for the home team. There will be an enormous support for Lee
:23:13. > :23:16.Wai Sze, the best-of-3 races again, and Lee is unlucky not to have got a
:23:17. > :23:19.decider against Kristina Vogel. There has been no explanation as to
:23:20. > :23:24.why that decision was not reversed, it seemed obvious that her progress
:23:25. > :23:28.was impeded and the judges are normally tough on that kind of thing
:23:29. > :23:31.in the sprints. I am surprised but she will have to deal with it and
:23:32. > :23:35.refocus and get ready for the bronze arrived off and a bronze medal would
:23:36. > :23:42.still be an amazing result for her, she has meddled in the Olympics
:23:43. > :23:46.before, never had a gold medal, but the bronze medal would be fantastic.
:23:47. > :23:50.There has not been any explanation either about the individual pursuit.
:23:51. > :23:55.Lots of things going wrong at these World Championships, which can
:23:56. > :24:03.happen. It is no one individual's fault, they've had wrong with the
:24:04. > :24:06.starting system, the timing, the gun going off unexpectedly. Let's hope
:24:07. > :24:10.we can get through this without any mishaps.
:24:11. > :24:16.COMMENTATOR: Fingers crossed. Here we go, race number one, potentially
:24:17. > :24:21.of three for the bronze medal in the women's sprints. Lee Wai Sze, from
:24:22. > :24:29.Hong Kong, against Simona Krupeckaite from Lithuania, two
:24:30. > :24:34.experienced racers, Lee a former champion in the 400 metres final,
:24:35. > :24:39.also has a medal from the World Championships, Lee was the bronze
:24:40. > :24:44.medallist in Minsk in 2013 when Becky James took the gold medal for
:24:45. > :24:47.Great Britain. Kristina Vogel, as we mentioned before, the Olympic
:24:48. > :24:53.champion twice, the sprint champion before, 12 times on the podium in
:24:54. > :24:59.the World Championships. Simona Krupeckaite with 12 podiums in the
:25:00. > :25:05.World Championship, two Gold, five silver and five bronze medals, two
:25:06. > :25:09.times a world champion but not this seven years, Krupeckaite, so she has
:25:10. > :25:13.to wait a bit longer as well, this race for bronze. Krupeckaite looked
:25:14. > :25:26.a bit jaded in the previous round for the first time. So there might
:25:27. > :25:29.be an opportunity here on home turf. She has certainly got that
:25:30. > :25:35.psychological advantage as the pace rises with two laps to go. Lee in
:25:36. > :25:39.the blue and white at the back, Krupeckaite are keeping a close eye
:25:40. > :25:45.on her opponent as they slowly wind it up faster and faster, getting
:25:46. > :25:52.ready for the big battle ahead here. She has got the height. She has got
:25:53. > :25:57.the height, hashing of the speed to take the race to Krupeckaite? Or
:25:58. > :26:02.will the Lithuanian take race one. Down the back straight? The race is
:26:03. > :26:07.on hand Lee Wai Sze will sense she can take it, Krupeckaite tries to
:26:08. > :26:14.hold her at bay and she can't do so. Lee Wai Sze takes race number one,
:26:15. > :26:21.she is one win away from a place on the podium and the bronze medal.
:26:22. > :26:26.Nicely ridden. She was not suckered into coming down the track early,
:26:27. > :26:34.she kept her height. Krupeckaite tried to store her but it was
:26:35. > :26:37.already under control at the back. She was able to start that
:26:38. > :26:45.acceleration hire a slightly earlier in the back straight and that is
:26:46. > :26:55.where the race was won. -- acceleration higher slightly
:26:56. > :27:04.earlier. Any second now the riders will be out for race number one in
:27:05. > :27:08.the gold-medal match up. Here is the sprint again at the end. Even though
:27:09. > :27:14.she dipped down underneath and didn't carry on and come underneath
:27:15. > :27:20.two paths, she got that little bit of acceleration and came back up
:27:21. > :27:24.through the slipstream and was able to start her acceleration down the
:27:25. > :27:26.back straight and get that little bit of extra height. Once she was
:27:27. > :27:34.level pegging on the back straight she had pretty much got it sewn up.
:27:35. > :27:38.Great start for Lee as the two riders will contest the World
:27:39. > :27:46.Championship title come to the line. This is the first race. Kristina
:27:47. > :27:58.Vogel and Stephanie Morton. Morton has already won a silver medal in
:27:59. > :28:01.the team sprint, Germany took that. The Commonwealth sprint champion up
:28:02. > :28:11.against a rider with so much experience.
:28:12. > :28:20.Three laps of the track. One imagines, Chris, that when it comes
:28:21. > :28:24.to it Morton won't wait too long before accelerating here. You would
:28:25. > :28:27.have to say that Voegele has the advantage here she would be the
:28:28. > :28:37.favourite. We have seen such close racing so far. I hesitate to call it
:28:38. > :28:44.in advance. Voegele often using the strategy of riding very close so it
:28:45. > :28:47.makes it difficult, even when they are this skilled, to keep an eye on
:28:48. > :28:53.the competitor and which way they are going to go, or counter to that,
:28:54. > :28:58.of course. Stephanie Morton is keeping right around the bottom so
:28:59. > :29:04.she can only come round on one side. That is not a tactic that can be
:29:05. > :29:09.continued as you see Voegele getting some height, weaving around the
:29:10. > :29:14.track, unnerving the other rider, not letting her know what is
:29:15. > :29:21.happening, Haining height so she can accelerate faster. Morton must join
:29:22. > :29:26.her at the top. There is a problem therefore Stephanie Morton. One
:29:27. > :29:33.wonders what that is. Presumably she may have a puncture. I don't know.
:29:34. > :29:40.It doesn't look like she has a puncture. But whatever it is
:29:41. > :29:48.something is not working properly. She didn't say what's wrong. Well,
:29:49. > :29:52.it's certainly not the tyres. They are well inflated. We didn't see
:29:53. > :29:56.anything happen, she just lost speed and we make that assumption, which
:29:57. > :30:05.is why the gun was fired. But if they can't find a recognised mishap
:30:06. > :30:09.she loses the match. This is an anxious time for Stephanie Morton
:30:10. > :30:14.and Australia. Let's look and see if we can spot what the issue is.
:30:15. > :30:20.Certainly nothing obvious. She is not pointing to anything.
:30:21. > :30:28.The mechanic is having a little look at the bike. The commissar is
:30:29. > :30:34.checking it is not the tyres. Watching very keenly. They are
:30:35. > :30:39.looking at the back of the bike, now the front of the bike. Oh, dear. If
:30:40. > :30:46.they can't find anything, she may well have conceded this first race.
:30:47. > :30:53.We are seeing quite a few things for the first time here, and I think we
:30:54. > :30:56.may be doing so yet again. What a bizarre situation that is. Her own
:30:57. > :31:05.mechanics can't find anything wrong with the bike. They will have to
:31:06. > :31:12.find something pretty sharpish! They are racking their brains here. Let's
:31:13. > :31:20.all just stare at this front wheel and see if it will go away. I don't
:31:21. > :31:23.think it is going to. Oh, dear. There was obviously something
:31:24. > :31:26.because the sprint hadn't even started. She obviously felt
:31:27. > :31:31.something had gone wrong with the bike, it reacted in an irregular
:31:32. > :31:36.manner. But the officials will be unimpressed at point, I'm sure.
:31:37. > :31:40.There are two officials watching now to make sure no tyres are let down
:31:41. > :31:43.or nothing else has happened. It looks like she was talking about
:31:44. > :31:54.slipping, let's see if we can pick anything up. We didn't see it. Let's
:31:55. > :32:02.just watch this replay and see if we can pick anything up, any change in
:32:03. > :32:09.the bike's behaviour. Certainly nothing visible up until this point.
:32:10. > :32:13.It is good to run it back through. If she has just touched at this
:32:14. > :32:17.speed, if you touch the edge of the banking, your wheel can slip down,
:32:18. > :32:24.and she may have thought there was a problem when in fact there wasn't.
:32:25. > :32:28.So that was the point I think where Vogel's overtook, so we came out of
:32:29. > :32:32.that shot just a little bit early. It looks as if we are even further
:32:33. > :32:36.behind schedule than we thought we were. The Australians now going to
:32:37. > :32:39.have a look at the other side of the track to see if there is anything on
:32:40. > :32:44.the boards that was a problem, but she was claiming that she slipped.
:32:45. > :32:48.If she can't find something quickly, I think she is going to have to
:32:49. > :32:52.concede that match. Looking desperately for either thing. One of
:32:53. > :33:00.the coaches has just picked something up off the inside of the
:33:01. > :33:03.track just inside the blue line, and is now running around towards the
:33:04. > :33:07.finishing line with something in his hand, but I don't know if it was
:33:08. > :33:15.part of her bike. We need to see what he is about to hand to the
:33:16. > :33:19.officials. It is a small item. We don't really want to be looking at
:33:20. > :33:25.Kristina Vogel now, we need to see what is going on behind. It looks as
:33:26. > :33:31.if something has come off the bike. It may have been on the track and
:33:32. > :33:34.she slipped over it. The coach was desperately searching for anything
:33:35. > :33:39.he could find, wasn't he? He ran around the whole track. That is it,
:33:40. > :33:42.the commissar has got it in his hand. Maybe it is a shard of wood
:33:43. > :33:46.from the crash earlier on in the women's omnium. Hopefully our
:33:47. > :33:51.cameraman will get a close-up so we can see what we are talking about.
:33:52. > :33:57.Still haven't given a cast-iron explanation as to why we had a gun
:33:58. > :34:03.miss fire earlier, just assuming that was what it was. We are not in
:34:04. > :34:07.control of the pictures, so there is nothing we can do about it, we are
:34:08. > :34:11.in the hands of the hosts here, but unfortunately we could do with
:34:12. > :34:18.having a look at seeing what this article is that has been picked up
:34:19. > :34:23.off the track. That certainly seems to be the issue, Australia have
:34:24. > :34:32.certainly found something, and they are now suggesting that is what
:34:33. > :34:38.caused the problem. The gun went and I saw it flick up...
:34:39. > :34:42.CLARE BALDING: More frustration for the riders, and Elaine Katie
:34:43. > :34:51.Archibald's timing for the points race which is the conclusion of the
:34:52. > :34:57.omnium. We will be showing you all of that on the red button, and we
:34:58. > :35:00.are coming off here on BBC Two at 2:40pm, but it will be on the red
:35:01. > :35:06.button which has started now. Chris, what think happened? Looking at the
:35:07. > :35:11.bit of debris, it could have been from the transponder, every bike has
:35:12. > :35:17.a transponder, it could potentially have come from the omnium, just a
:35:18. > :35:21.bit of debris on the track. She has gone on it, she has sat up there, I
:35:22. > :35:25.think she may be hit it on the track, the front real slipped, she
:35:26. > :35:30.is looking down, and this would be a real shame if she had to concede
:35:31. > :35:33.that first ride. Unless you are a die-hard German fan, you want to see
:35:34. > :35:38.a fair race and see a proper race from the start. It seems to be there
:35:39. > :35:45.is a lot of confusion about lots of issues, whether it is guns going off
:35:46. > :35:47.randomly, timing devices, and the organisers will start to feel a bit
:35:48. > :35:51.of pressure because gets embarrassing. And they are all
:35:52. > :35:55.unrelated, they are all strange things we have never seen before.
:35:56. > :36:00.Listening to Simon and Chris, there are so many things that have
:36:01. > :36:02.happened for the first time in these championships, but this is just
:36:03. > :36:05.another example of that. You can see them they're trying to examine the
:36:06. > :36:08.bike, but whatever it was that was on the track that was picked up and
:36:09. > :36:14.taken to the officials to say, this is what caused it. If you are in the
:36:15. > :36:19.front in a sprint, you are looking behind you say you are not looking
:36:20. > :36:22.at the track in front. I think she rode over something and it made it
:36:23. > :36:25.feel as if the tire had been punctured or there was a problem
:36:26. > :36:27.with the bike, the front wheel dropped all slipped, and she just
:36:28. > :36:35.decided to abandon ship and restart the race. Jill Douglas is in the
:36:36. > :36:38.centre of the track trying to work at herself what is happening, and
:36:39. > :36:43.seeing the effect that it is having on all the women in their
:36:44. > :36:45.preparation stages for the final omnium race, the points race. What
:36:46. > :36:58.is happening, Jill? Well, a lot of people are scratching
:36:59. > :37:02.their heads and wondering what on earth is going to happen. It is
:37:03. > :37:06.difficult to swap the women's points race onto the track now when they
:37:07. > :37:10.have got the sprint race that has not been completed, because the
:37:11. > :37:14.sprinters need time between their efforts in order to complete the
:37:15. > :37:16.final, so it is a difficult situation, but a lot of the coaches
:37:17. > :37:22.who have riders for the final event in the women's omnium by getting
:37:23. > :37:24.anxious because their riders are waiting, instead of sitting on the
:37:25. > :37:30.rollers and getting ready for what is a huge race, they are sitting on
:37:31. > :37:35.the side of track waiting to get under way, and a number of the
:37:36. > :37:44.national coaches having a word to various of the commissars, nobody is
:37:45. > :37:47.very clear as to what has happened to Stephanie Morton and her bike,
:37:48. > :37:49.but it looks as though they are going to get this race under way and
:37:50. > :38:05.we stage it. COMMENTATOR: Here we go, ready to
:38:06. > :38:08.restart in the women's sprint. Let's hope for no mishaps this time, let's
:38:09. > :38:12.hope it is second time lucky with the start as it was with the men's
:38:13. > :38:17.pursuit final, and let's hope there is no more debris to cause problems
:38:18. > :38:21.on the side of the track. If you have joined our coverage late, it is
:38:22. > :38:25.the gold medal race, Stephanie Morton from Australia on the front
:38:26. > :38:30.of the moment leading for the first lap at least against Kristina Vogel
:38:31. > :38:33.from Germany, twice the former world sprint champion, and the current
:38:34. > :38:39.Olympic champion in this discipline. I'm not sure we should, take no, you
:38:40. > :38:44.could just replay what we said for the first minute before and it will
:38:45. > :38:51.be roughly right, I think! As they get back under way, Morton committed
:38:52. > :38:55.now. Has to be, because she will have lost the leniency of the
:38:56. > :38:58.judges, I think, for that one. No rules in the book about that. They
:38:59. > :39:02.are not hanging around this time, they want to get on with it, and
:39:03. > :39:07.Kristina Vogel goes to the front now, and she has a lap to go. A
:39:08. > :39:10.little bit of daylight between the pair of them, here comes Stephanie
:39:11. > :39:13.Morton, looking to make her challenge and charge down the back
:39:14. > :39:17.straight. She is not gaining any ground at the moment against Vogel,
:39:18. > :39:20.she has plenty to do into the finishing straight, and Kristina
:39:21. > :39:25.Vogel has got the legs on the speed to make sure that she led from the
:39:26. > :39:30.front and stay there, 1-0 to Germany. She is well on her way to
:39:31. > :39:35.another world title. Hopefully she will get there. Don't worry, Chris
:39:36. > :39:41.is fine, he is still with us! She didn't get a look in, Morton, in the
:39:42. > :39:46.race. Really affected, I think, by that this happened whatever it was.
:39:47. > :39:50.It didn't work for her, she wasn't able to be competitive in the first
:39:51. > :39:55.race, as you were just saying, with Kristina Vogel deciding she had
:39:56. > :39:59.obviously been watching Morton's quarterfinal very closely, and the
:40:00. > :40:03.tactics she had, and she turned the tables on her because she was the
:40:04. > :40:07.one who was assertive early and decided to put the pedal down.
:40:08. > :40:11.Morton that has be dictated to, as well, and she closed on the wheel,
:40:12. > :40:18.waited for the acceleration down the back straight, didn't join in and
:40:19. > :40:22.just ran out of road. They will get a decent rest, and there you can see
:40:23. > :40:28.confirmation that Vogel leads the final, and a reminder that Lee Wai
:40:29. > :40:30.Sze leads the bronze medal race against Simona Krupeckaite from
:40:31. > :40:35.Lithuania as well. They will be back for their second race of the Loire,
:40:36. > :40:39.but next on the track it is the women's omnium, the deciding race.
:40:40. > :40:45.There are the standings. It could not be closer. They found once they
:40:46. > :40:50.brought this race in that sometimes the points race was being ridden
:40:51. > :40:55.defensively, and to counter that, they put double points on the last
:40:56. > :40:58.sprint, and look how close it is. There are five or six people that
:40:59. > :41:04.could take this race. And it is a couple of minutes away.
:41:05. > :41:12.Defending champion Laura Kenney is sitting with us in the studio. Would
:41:13. > :41:16.you say that it could be any of the top six? I would say top four, it
:41:17. > :41:20.sounds bad accounting Sarah Hammer out, but she is too far back now,
:41:21. > :41:24.and they won't let her take a lap, you would be pretty daft to do that.
:41:25. > :41:29.Katie will probably follow that group of four other top but try to
:41:30. > :41:34.score points along the way. She is level with Amy Cure at the minute,
:41:35. > :41:38.and they are both great bunch race riders, but when Katie can sniff the
:41:39. > :41:42.finish line, that is it. She always has that kind of extra little bit
:41:43. > :41:46.that you need. So you are fully confident that despite the delay,
:41:47. > :41:52.Katie Archibald has what it takes to win Britain's first gold medal? For
:41:53. > :41:57.sure, yes. And that would have bothered her, she will be ready. I
:41:58. > :42:01.think a little bit of extra recovery is never going to be a bad thing
:42:02. > :42:06.when you have four races in one day, I think she is ready. I feel so much
:42:07. > :42:09.confidence for her, she is already European champion in this event, and
:42:10. > :42:17.one of the best performing under pressure, so she is not down, she is
:42:18. > :42:20.level. This is her moment, Chris, a first individual title to World
:42:21. > :42:24.Championships would be a huge thing. This would be massive for her, to
:42:25. > :42:30.step out from being a team player to being an individual champion, and I
:42:31. > :42:33.think she can do it, absolutely. To reiterate, this race will start on
:42:34. > :42:39.BBC Two, but is is also starting right now on red button, so it will
:42:40. > :42:43.also finish on red button, we will have to dip out of it on BBC Two.
:42:44. > :42:49.Can Katie Archibald hold off Amy Cure and Kirsten Wild and the rest
:42:50. > :42:53.to take gold in the women's omnium? It all comes down to this, the
:42:54. > :42:55.points race, 20 K ahead of them, 80 laps, spreads every ten laps, it is
:42:56. > :43:07.hard work. Simon. COMMENTATOR: Tension in the air as
:43:08. > :43:10.the riders leave the start line for the rolling start, the idea being
:43:11. > :43:14.that they are up and running and a nice bunch as they come around, then
:43:15. > :43:18.the officials are happy and they can start the race properly. It'll be
:43:19. > :43:21.interesting to see different tactics, certainly those of Sarah
:43:22. > :43:28.Hammer she is on the back foot back in fourth position. And of course a
:43:29. > :43:31.one lap gave his 20 points, you pick some up while you are out there,
:43:32. > :43:37.there is potentially 25 points with a single move, and the favourite who
:43:38. > :43:42.are in podium positions at the moment I'm not going to want to let
:43:43. > :43:46.that happen, but they can't chase everybody, so there are couple of
:43:47. > :43:50.riders that are close enough that they may find themselves an
:43:51. > :43:55.opportunity if they are willing to fight for it, because Amy Cure,
:43:56. > :44:03.Archibald, Wild, they have all got to watch each other very, very
:44:04. > :44:11.closely. Sarah Hammer down in fourth place, and Daria Pikulik of Poland
:44:12. > :44:14.in fifth. Kirsten Wild from the Netherlands just riding through on
:44:15. > :44:22.the inside of the track in the orange jersey. Sarah Hammer from the
:44:23. > :44:29.United States, four silver medals she has had to settle for. Finishing
:44:30. > :44:34.second to Laura Trott as was twice in London and in Rio in the omnium,
:44:35. > :44:41.and beaten twice by Great Britain in the team pursuit as well. But she
:44:42. > :44:44.has a number of world titles and she is likely to add to those impressive
:44:45. > :44:49.numbers today. The first attack of the race comes from Anita Stenberg
:44:50. > :45:03.Norway, so she is on the attack, and she has for company Ana Usabiaga
:45:04. > :45:07.from Spain. I think there are 40 points on the boy Justin sprints
:45:08. > :45:10.alone, just on lap games, so nobody can ride this race defensively, they
:45:11. > :45:17.have got to start with a clean sheet, and they have to attack this
:45:18. > :45:21.thing. Cure although she's in the lead, she is tied with Archibald, so
:45:22. > :45:29.they both have to get their nose in front. Still fine margins, no room
:45:30. > :45:32.for relaxation for Amy Cure. Patrolling the front of the peloton
:45:33. > :45:37.at the moment, Kirsten Wild sitting on her wheel, Sarah Hammer there,
:45:38. > :45:43.too, having a look down to spot Katie Archibald in the middle of the
:45:44. > :45:47.pack of moving towards front third. Cure very much near the front, I
:45:48. > :45:49.expect she may have a go at this first sprint, trying to get herself
:45:50. > :46:04.in front and a defensive position. Just coming off the front, it looks
:46:05. > :46:09.like Baleisyte from Lithuania and Lydia Boylan from Ireland coming off
:46:10. > :46:13.the front of the main pack and Katie Archibald is also quite prominent,
:46:14. > :46:20.Amy Cure sitting on her wheel, no surprise to. They will take the bell
:46:21. > :46:25.this time. Interesting to see if they go for it even though there is
:46:26. > :46:30.only a couple of points on offer. Five and three from the road, two
:46:31. > :46:40.and one from the main group. Cure is thinking about it. Cure is right on
:46:41. > :46:45.her shoulder. Usabiaga and Archibald will contest the main points.
:46:46. > :46:50.Maximum points for first over the line by collecting two points, Katie
:46:51. > :46:55.Archibald. No points for Amy Cure in the first sprint. Katie Archibald
:46:56. > :46:59.just ahead. Keeping the pressure on, unusual for this stage in the game
:47:00. > :47:03.for one of the major players, plenty of people want to chase you down,
:47:04. > :47:08.just testing things at the moment, she was allowed to go unencumbered
:47:09. > :47:11.on that sprint so that was interesting tactics from Amy Cure
:47:12. > :47:15.who is now two points in arrears. Amy Cure is now having to lead the
:47:16. > :47:24.chase, the Lithuanian ride atop one point ahead of Lydia Boylan.
:47:25. > :47:28.Usabiaga has not got much of an advantage and she has given it up.
:47:29. > :47:32.The favourites have come to the front to push some air. She has
:47:33. > :47:37.forced Amy Cure to listen chasing for three quarters of a lap. Now it
:47:38. > :47:43.is Archibald's turn to sit on Amy Cure's wheel are coming through the
:47:44. > :47:47.onside, Roxane Fournier of France attacking, who won couple of stages
:47:48. > :47:58.on the rich Defrance last year. She is being followed by Jarmila
:47:59. > :48:02.Machacova. I thought she might take advantage by moving to the front but
:48:03. > :48:05.she is happy to let it develop. I would be amazed if she is not on the
:48:06. > :48:11.attack before the end of this race. Fournier at the front, Amy Cure
:48:12. > :48:17.second in line, Kirsten Wild is there, Srna hammer -- Sarah Hammer
:48:18. > :48:20.having a look. She decided she didn't want to go to
:48:21. > :48:27.the front. Daria Pikulik trying to get on the wheel of Archibald. She
:48:28. > :48:33.has been on the front a lot, swinging back up-and-down halfway
:48:34. > :48:38.down the peloton at the moment. No danger, 72 points at the moment, so
:48:39. > :48:42.they will be happy to let it go from a strategic point of view. Sure
:48:43. > :48:46.enough Sarah Hammer has a lot to see if she can get away. I always had
:48:47. > :48:49.the feeling Sarah Hammer would be content to roll around the track in
:48:50. > :48:53.the final event if she had the opportunity, she would like to get
:48:54. > :48:58.involved in it. In fourth place overall going into the final race.
:48:59. > :49:04.Decided to stop riding the individual pursuit events, or rather
:49:05. > :49:07.the team events, to focus on the bunch racing. She will be
:49:08. > :49:13.disappointed with her performance here. Paller from Germany just on
:49:14. > :49:18.the front without putting any pressure on. A little lull in the
:49:19. > :49:25.activity. Just on the back of the race, number 25, Yurie Kato Jeff
:49:26. > :49:33.Hart from Japan. Meanwhile it is Kirsten Wild around the shoulder of
:49:34. > :49:40.Amy Cure -- Yumi Kajihara. Archibald Justin behind Kirsten Wild Archibald
:49:41. > :49:44.going around the outside of Amy Cure who is boxed in, Archibald
:49:45. > :49:49.determined not to let her through, Archibald and Kirsten Wild at the
:49:50. > :49:53.front, Karcher bowled desperate to claim another five points to give
:49:54. > :49:56.her a cushion at the head of the field -- Archibald. That is what she
:49:57. > :50:00.has done, five points for Katie Archibald, extending her lead at the
:50:01. > :50:03.top of the table. STUDIO: What a start for Katie
:50:04. > :50:04.Archibald and you can see the conclusion
