:00:36. > :00:41.Hello and welcome to coverage of the penultimate day of the track cycling

:00:42. > :00:43.World Championships in Hong Kong. Great Britain going pretty well,

:00:44. > :00:49.three medals in three days living them second in the table behind a

:00:50. > :00:52.dominant Australia and it all had a golden blow yesterday, Katie

:00:53. > :00:56.Archibald taking Britain's first gold in these World Championships in

:00:57. > :00:59.the omnium event. We have an awful lot to look forward to and a lot to

:01:00. > :01:05.reflect on in the programme between now and 3:30pm. It is a case of what

:01:06. > :01:10.Katie did, we will be reflecting on the drama and the training nature of

:01:11. > :01:15.her on the victory in a moment. Today, it is the turn of the men and

:01:16. > :01:19.Chris Latham, who won a bronze medal in the scratch race, represents

:01:20. > :01:26.Britain. When the women's madison made its world club debut in

:01:27. > :01:30.Glasgow, Katie Archibald recovered from a terrible crash with Manon

:01:31. > :01:35.Lloyd to win. Archibald with a broken wrist. And the good news from

:01:36. > :01:41.a British point of view is that 21-year-old Ryan Owens has made it

:01:42. > :01:44.through to the sprint semifinals, winning in a knockout stages this

:01:45. > :01:51.morning at that has brought a big smile to the face of Sir Chris Hoy.

:01:52. > :01:54.It was a very good day yesterday. I won't let you say anything right

:01:55. > :01:58.now, because we are going to see at first and talk about it later. Katie

:01:59. > :02:05.Archibald, what an extraordinary performance. She was lying right up

:02:06. > :02:12.their level on points with Amy Cure at the four offence and as we join

:02:13. > :02:14.the points race, she has made a very good start. We join Simon

:02:15. > :02:20.Brotherton. It is going to be a real nailbiter.

:02:21. > :02:26.Certainly not coasting to the end of this omnium, 18 laps, 17 when they

:02:27. > :02:29.come around this time. Katie Archibald just hitting the front

:02:30. > :02:36.momentarily. They are closing the gap. Amy Cure was right there.

:02:37. > :02:41.Archibald moves in behind Kirsten Weald. Keeping a close eye on each

:02:42. > :02:48.other at the front of the field as the German rider moves towards the

:02:49. > :02:54.front. Archibald is in a good place with 16 laps to go. Speaking of 15

:02:55. > :02:59.points left on the board, that would be enough for two riders to leapfrog

:03:00. > :03:03.Archibald, so she has to be careful, so long as no one important goes up

:03:04. > :03:10.the road. That is what is happening at the moment. There is the leader,

:03:11. > :03:22.it Katie Archibald, but the leader, from Chinese Taipei, followed by the

:03:23. > :03:27.raider from Germany, and Roxanne Fornier from France and the Japanese

:03:28. > :03:30.rider, which is no threat to the overall scenario. Amy Cure having a

:03:31. > :03:39.little luck, she doesn't want to be stuck in a neutralised position.

:03:40. > :03:43.Sorry, we have had a bit of an issue there, which is a good thing,

:03:44. > :03:50.because I was saying to Joe, I am so sorry I didn't let you speak, and

:03:51. > :03:55.now you can! Fantastic performance yesterday, we were all on the edge

:03:56. > :03:59.of our seeds and it was fantastic to see her in the rainbow stripes and I

:04:00. > :04:05.hope she is still buzzing. It was a fantastic win. We can go back and

:04:06. > :04:09.see that win now. It is going to be a real nailbiter, this one, write to

:04:10. > :04:16.the last. Certainly not coasting to the end of this omnium, 17 laps when

:04:17. > :04:21.they come around this time. Katie Archibald just hit the front

:04:22. > :04:29.momentarily. Amy Cure was right there. Keeping a close eye on each

:04:30. > :04:35.other at the front of the field at the moment as the German rider moves

:04:36. > :04:44.towards the front. Archibald in a good spot with 16 laps to go. 15

:04:45. > :04:48.points left on the board, which would be enough for two riders to

:04:49. > :04:53.leapfrog Archibald, as long as no one important goes up the road. No

:04:54. > :04:56.one important in terms of the overall situation. There is the

:04:57. > :05:02.leader in the gold medal position, Katie Archibald, but the leader from

:05:03. > :05:11.Chinese Taipei followed by the rider from Germany, Palle, and Roxanne

:05:12. > :05:17.Fornier from France and catchy Hara from Japan, so no threat to the

:05:18. > :05:20.overall scenario. Amy Cure coming around the outside, she doesn't want

:05:21. > :05:31.to be stuck in a neutralised position. Two riders to watch and

:05:32. > :05:35.that the lower riders go up the road, but those two people they

:05:36. > :05:47.can't let get away as they approach the next sprint.

:05:48. > :05:52.Zheng up there from Taipei. The gap is being closed with every

:05:53. > :05:58.revolution of the pedals. It will be three laps to go until the next

:05:59. > :06:05.sprint, next over the line... Two laps to go, 12 over the line. She's

:06:06. > :06:18.moving up from the outside, she knows she has to either go for the

:06:19. > :06:23.sprint or go after the other riders. Wield moves through as they take the

:06:24. > :06:28.belt. Amy Cure is in a really good position, Katie Archibald not so

:06:29. > :06:33.much. Amy Cure leads down the back straight. Wield will try and go

:06:34. > :06:37.around the outside. Has she got the speed to do so? Stenberg on the

:06:38. > :06:44.inside. It was so close on the line, a photo between the pair of them.

:06:45. > :06:48.Did Wield time that to perfection? I hope so, because she is the lesser

:06:49. > :06:54.threat to Archibald, who I think might have picked up a point as

:06:55. > :07:11.well. Archibald, I think gets a point. She does. Archibald lives by

:07:12. > :07:18.two points. 120. And Kirsten Wild is on 150. This will all come down to

:07:19. > :07:25.the final sprint, tactics are all important. Kirsten Wild putting

:07:26. > :07:30.herself into the contention for a medal, she is having a go just to do

:07:31. > :07:35.that and those points going up the road can only help Katie Archibald.

:07:36. > :07:46.Sarah Hammer hits the front and she has shown company, -- some company.

:07:47. > :07:52.And then the Polish rider who is fourth has made a move. The others

:07:53. > :07:55.are watching each other in the pack. This is good the Katie Archibald but

:07:56. > :07:59.there are still six laps to go and they are really eating up the

:08:00. > :08:04.ground, they have the nearly a half a lap advantage, so it is going to

:08:05. > :08:15.have to be weighed up carefully. She is on the wheel of Amy Cure right

:08:16. > :08:27.now but is where she needs to be. Katchihara Japan gets to join the

:08:28. > :08:30.field. Kilometre until the end of this omnium World Championships.

:08:31. > :08:36.Katie Archibald pole position but just a two point lead. So close, so

:08:37. > :08:42.much to play for on this final generic for laps of this race. She

:08:43. > :08:46.has lost the wheel of Amy Cure. Amy Cure is going for this final sprint,

:08:47. > :08:51.coming round the outside now, fighting all the way. Katie

:08:52. > :08:56.Archibald is going to have to dig really debut she is going to secure

:08:57. > :09:01.this world title, it is between her, Amy Cure and Kirsten Wild. And you

:09:02. > :09:06.can see how much it is hurting. Next time over the line, Sarah Hammer at

:09:07. > :09:11.the front of the race. Concentrating on events behind and Kirsten Wild

:09:12. > :09:16.will be a big danger in this final sprint. Two laps to go. Both of her

:09:17. > :09:20.rivals are in front of her, she is boxed in on the inside, they will

:09:21. > :09:25.take the bell and she has to get out of this position and Kirsten Wild

:09:26. > :09:30.knows that and look at the turn of speed from Wild. One lap to go in

:09:31. > :09:34.the women's omnium, can Katie Archibald hang on to the gold medal

:09:35. > :09:40.position in the sprint? Down the back straight they go. Amy Cure has

:09:41. > :09:44.got nothing left. It is Kirsten Wild against Archibald and Archibald

:09:45. > :09:49.really wants it and she makes sure she gets it. That was absolutely

:09:50. > :09:53.fantastic from Katie Archibald. It looked like she was running on empty

:09:54. > :09:57.but she found something from somewhere, that little burst of

:09:58. > :10:05.speed that carried her off the final banking. Like a shot... She came

:10:06. > :10:09.hurtling down the finishing straight, it is gold for Katie

:10:10. > :10:13.Archibald, gold for Great Britain, what a finish to the women's omnium

:10:14. > :10:19.and Great Britain have a first gold medal at these World Championships

:10:20. > :10:24.and what a women's omnium it was. It was in the balance right to the last

:10:25. > :10:29.few seconds of the race. Katie Archibald takes it, one-two-three

:10:30. > :10:36.points. Amy Cure second, 115, level with Kirsten Wild. What drama, what

:10:37. > :10:41.excitement and what a result for Katie Archibald, a world champion in

:10:42. > :10:46.the team pursuit in 2014, she is now an individual world champion in the

:10:47. > :10:49.women's omnium, but my goodness me, she kept us on the edge of our seats

:10:50. > :10:52.there. CLARE BALDING: where and she got the

:10:53. > :10:59.final kick from, even she didn't know, first individual world title

:11:00. > :11:03.for Katie at the age of 23. She said she had the motivation from Rio to

:11:04. > :11:06.prove herself as an individual and it meant she had a moment to stand

:11:07. > :11:24.alone and say that the national anthem.

:11:25. > :11:29.Amy Cure, by the way, was relegated to third place and Kirsten Wild took

:11:30. > :12:15.the silver. Katie, many, many congratulations,

:12:16. > :12:22.that is a world title in the omnium and you looked so strong in that

:12:23. > :12:27.final sprint, it was awesome to see. Oh, I messed up... I thought I was

:12:28. > :12:34.going to drop out of the race. You know, the start... The pain... And I

:12:35. > :12:38.felt, well, it is dirty tactics, basically, I knew I had to stay on

:12:39. > :12:43.Amy Cure no matter what, like team pursuit mode, follow that wheel.

:12:44. > :12:57.There is always something to the final sprint. And going off on a

:12:58. > :13:01.tangent. I am not sure if I deserved it, that was very close. I think you

:13:02. > :13:05.can only save when you deserve it when you win the first two events,

:13:06. > :13:09.placed fifth in the third event and win like that but as you say, in the

:13:10. > :13:13.closing stages, you looks like you are in a lot of pain and I think the

:13:14. > :13:19.others thought they could take advantage, but you found something

:13:20. > :13:24.to get over the line. It is so different, and on the race. The

:13:25. > :13:27.tactics, when she get to the final, you are racing against ten people

:13:28. > :13:32.rather than 20 and I have been training with a largely pursued

:13:33. > :13:35.focus, so three and a half minutes, and focusing on the fact that most

:13:36. > :13:40.of these events are ten minutes long and I just thought, I will get

:13:41. > :13:42.through the points and I went out like the devil on legs. I didn't

:13:43. > :13:49.write it very efficiently, that didn't help but I have not gone out

:13:50. > :13:53.with fatigue in a long time, like, over a year, maybe, so there was a

:13:54. > :14:00.real dent my confidence, I thought I am not fit enough to do this. But I

:14:01. > :14:03.got it in the end. And you can tell the emotional exhaustion as well as

:14:04. > :14:11.the physical exhaustion. We will lead the discussion moment because I

:14:12. > :14:17.want to go to the 500m time trial, Wai Sze Lee is about to go.

:14:18. > :14:22.Thank you, Wai Sze Lee from Hong Kong, who won the bronze medal in

:14:23. > :14:28.the sprint for the second time in these championships, hopes to add to

:14:29. > :14:33.her medal collection here. She was the world champion in this event in

:14:34. > :14:38.Minsk in 2013, but she has quite a bit to do, three riders faster than

:14:39. > :14:44.her in qualifying this morning. Two laps of the track. A couple of

:14:45. > :14:47.tenths of a second faster, which is a lot in this event. The track is

:14:48. > :14:50.running slightly slower than it was this morning. Hush around the

:14:51. > :15:01.Velodrome here now. Two laps are power and blistering

:15:02. > :15:07.speed coming up here for Wai Sze Lee from Hong Kong. Can she get a medal

:15:08. > :15:10.here? Roared on by the home crowd. Beautifully timed out the gate and

:15:11. > :15:13.really got the power down, caught it just right. She can't complain of

:15:14. > :15:23.that part of the ride. She has to put it all out on the

:15:24. > :15:30.track now, holding nothing back, down the back straight, into the

:15:31. > :15:37.banking for the last time. The crowd roar and here she comes, Lee Wai

:15:38. > :15:41.Sze, with the fastest time, 37.723. We will have to see if it is enough

:15:42. > :15:46.to put on the top of the podium but certainly she could not have done

:15:47. > :15:51.too much more. An emotional ride as much as physical she really put it

:15:52. > :15:54.all out there. That trend continuing, but so consistent and

:15:55. > :15:59.she is also under pressure, with the crowd support, but also one of those

:16:00. > :16:10.opportunities of a lifetime, so still very much in the hunt for a

:16:11. > :16:14.medal here. She will have the relief of having got a medal before, albeit

:16:15. > :16:20.a bronze one. I agree with you, Chris. It seems daft having

:16:21. > :16:24.qualifying for an event like this earlier in the day because it steals

:16:25. > :16:32.everyone's thunder. Well, it is what it is. I am certainly no stranger to

:16:33. > :16:35.being wrong, and maybe as we say we will get twice as much for our

:16:36. > :16:44.money, I don't know. But I enjoyed the fact it was all so explosive and

:16:45. > :16:51.it is all hinting on such a short period of time. I like the nature of

:16:52. > :16:59.it, going for the two that's just the ones. Two German riders in this

:17:00. > :17:08.field. The second-fastest is the world Junior champion. And this is

:17:09. > :17:18.the winner of this race from 2014 in Colombia, racing with Kristina

:17:19. > :17:35.Vogel. 15 seconds to go now for Miriam Welte's right. -- Miriam

:17:36. > :17:39.Welte's ride. Miriam Welte is so experienced, so many medals and

:17:40. > :17:43.championships around the world. She has ten championship medals in

:17:44. > :17:48.total. Can she add to that collection here? Usually finishes

:17:49. > :17:53.fast, but that is quick, more than half a second faster than anybody

:17:54. > :17:58.else for this opening lap, quite incredible. Lost a bit of ground but

:17:59. > :18:02.she has built up quite our lead. What a start by Miriam Welte, and it

:18:03. > :18:05.is absolutely silent in the velodrome as the German writer comes

:18:06. > :18:11.around and is about to finish, and it will be a new faster time,

:18:12. > :18:15.33.382, polite applause but you can sense the disappointment in the air.

:18:16. > :18:20.The first of the riders to go faster than they did in qualifying so she

:18:21. > :18:25.will have to be pleased with that. Her start was so clean, looking...

:18:26. > :18:27.Not pedestrian, it didn't look like she was driving and getting

:18:28. > :18:32.everything out but that is what it looks like when all muscles are

:18:33. > :18:36.balanced, no rocking backwards and forwards, all going through the

:18:37. > :18:40.pedals. Miriam Welte going for what would be her fifth World

:18:41. > :18:45.Championship title. Only two could possibly beat her now. Daria

:18:46. > :18:50.Shmeleva from Russia, and her compatriot, Anastasia Voynova, the

:18:51. > :18:56.last two the go, having set quicker times in qualifying today. But an

:18:57. > :19:01.excellent ride from Miriam Welte. The starting gate being put in

:19:02. > :19:08.place, and she will wonder off to the end of the track and will not

:19:09. > :19:18.have too long to wait to discover what colour her medal will be. This

:19:19. > :19:21.is Shmeleva, who already has a medal,, has won in each of the last

:19:22. > :19:24.two years, really good young sprinter who has come through and

:19:25. > :19:29.managed to carry it through into the elite ranks. 22 years of age.

:19:30. > :19:33.Interestingly, the first of the riders to avail themselves of the

:19:34. > :19:38.bar which come into effect after that opening lap, and I am really

:19:39. > :19:42.surprised more riders have moved away from this setup where when you

:19:43. > :19:53.are starting to die, make yourself small and become more efficient. It

:19:54. > :19:59.seems to be the way the go. The job for Daria Shmeleva is to beat the

:20:00. > :20:03.time of 33.382 seconds here for the two lapse, and away she goes,

:20:04. > :20:10.quickly trying to get on top of the gear and setter in the -- settle

:20:11. > :20:13.into a rhythm. This is the bell. That is where the position comes

:20:14. > :20:19.into its own, getting into that closing, almost just hundredss of a

:20:20. > :20:24.second behind at the moment. She gets faster and faster. Overhauling

:20:25. > :20:30.the times of those before her by the time she gets to the Senate wood

:20:31. > :20:35.finishing line, 33.282, a new leader -- as she gets to the finishing

:20:36. > :20:41.line. Those tactics being off in my view in that last quarter of a lap,

:20:42. > :20:47.well worth the extra grams at the start. A beautiful start, look

:20:48. > :20:51.clean. Just one single effort, no rocking back and forward. She was

:20:52. > :21:00.out of the gate. If it is possible to do it in as short a race as two

:21:01. > :21:04.lap sprint, she was doing that. You can see this, against counterparts,

:21:05. > :21:15.the elbows out, really makes a big difference when they up to speed.

:21:16. > :21:21.16km/h -- 60km/h at peak speed in this, so the coach they are,

:21:22. > :21:30.certainly pleased. There is the situation, one rider remaining in

:21:31. > :21:37.this final. Lee Wai Sze may find herself out of the medals. If it

:21:38. > :21:42.goes to form, Anastasia Voynova for Russia will get one. Yes, she will

:21:43. > :21:46.have to go faster than she did this morning as wood if she wants to take

:21:47. > :21:52.this title, and it is tough going up there, you know, when you have half

:21:53. > :21:59.a minute and everything is to play for. You know they have gone faster

:22:00. > :22:02.than you have already during this competition. It is all to do.

:22:03. > :22:09.Voynova knows exactly what she has to do here. For and Shmeleva with

:22:10. > :22:13.team-mates earlier in the competition, beating the rest of the

:22:14. > :22:16.world, but they are very much going head-to-head here. Four claims she

:22:17. > :22:21.has been a world champion already in her career, twice in the team sprint

:22:22. > :22:32.and twice in this event. Going for the hat-trick having one each of the

:22:33. > :22:35.previous championships. Two big leather straps around each foot.

:22:36. > :22:41.There has to be a better way, I think a lot of the teams are using

:22:42. > :22:55.Velcro. Taking with one hand and giving away with the other.

:22:56. > :23:03.33.282 is the time to beat, set by her compatriot Shmeleva, and

:23:04. > :23:06.Anastasia Voynova is on her way. Very sharp, perhaps not as good out

:23:07. > :23:12.of the gate but certainly up to speed. She has given away newly two

:23:13. > :23:18.tenths of a second, an awful lot to make it but she is on her way to

:23:19. > :23:22.making it up. Is she on her way to hat-trick of titles in this world

:23:23. > :23:26.event? She has time to make up. Can she do it? Needs to be a very big

:23:27. > :23:30.finish here from Voynova as she crosses the line, and it is only

:23:31. > :23:35.good enough for third place. She takes the bronze medal and pushes

:23:36. > :23:39.Lee Wai Sze off the podium. She will finish in fourth place, but Daria

:23:40. > :23:45.Shmeleva is the new world champion. The golden medal stays with Russia

:23:46. > :23:48.for the third year in a row but for the first time in three years

:23:49. > :23:52.Anastasia Voynova is no longer the world champion, and it will be Daria

:23:53. > :23:56.Shmeleva who will stand on top of the podium. I go back and stand by

:23:57. > :24:02.that. I am very surprised that in these short events, you know, every

:24:03. > :24:07.single meter of the track counts, so if you have an advantage you can

:24:08. > :24:10.take, why not use it? It is all about power but 90% is used to push

:24:11. > :24:14.here are the way, getting small, getting those two arms out of the

:24:15. > :24:17.wind, it has to give you an advantage and I think that is

:24:18. > :24:22.exactly what her team-mates did. That is what made the difference at

:24:23. > :24:26.the end. A little reminder as well, the rider who did not make it into

:24:27. > :24:29.the final, Katy Marchant from Great Britain, she was in qualifying this

:24:30. > :24:38.morning but finished in 30th please will stop Katy Marchant not making

:24:39. > :24:41.it through to the final here this evening, as Daria Shmeleva prepares

:24:42. > :24:45.to celebrate her world title, her second world title in these

:24:46. > :24:52.championships here in Hong Kong. Shmeleva taking the gold, Miriam

:24:53. > :24:57.Welte with an excellent silver, and Voynova with the bronze.

:24:58. > :25:05.STUDIO: Chris Hoy here in the studio egging -- echoing those comments

:25:06. > :25:08.about aerodynamics. It is so important, and I can only think of

:25:09. > :25:12.team sprint, they are used to riding in that position and because it is

:25:13. > :25:15.not an Olympic event perhaps she does not want to train in that

:25:16. > :25:20.different position but it is still a world title and such an obvious

:25:21. > :25:25.thing, look at her elbows sticking right out, like a parachute, her

:25:26. > :25:28.team-mate, on the tribe ares, nice and efficient and aerodynamic. And

:25:29. > :25:32.it meant the difference between a gold and bronze medal. We will be

:25:33. > :25:36.back with live action shortly because the men's Omnium is reaching

:25:37. > :25:41.the second half. Let's catch up on this morning's events. Chris Latham

:25:42. > :25:46.is in this for Great Britain. It has been hard for him, to be honest. It

:25:47. > :25:50.started with the ten kilometres scratch race. Even though two riders

:25:51. > :25:54.are sprinting for the line the real action was back in the bunch and it

:25:55. > :26:00.was the Spaniard who was the first to cross the line, taking maximum

:26:01. > :26:06.points ahead of Benjamin Thomas of France and the Italian. Again the

:26:07. > :26:11.winner could be found here towards the back of the field as the winners

:26:12. > :26:17.sprinted for the line for the final time of points one earlier in the

:26:18. > :26:28.race. New Zealand had already mopped up the victory, with Tories of Spain

:26:29. > :26:38.in after. Anyone really of those ten could still win. Chris Latham I'm

:26:39. > :26:42.afraid is down in 20 First Place currently last at the moment and it

:26:43. > :26:46.means he will line up at the fence. At the elimination race the draw of

:26:47. > :26:53.where you are lining up is actually pretty crucial yes, the only one

:26:54. > :26:58.where you care about how you start. Even though there is a big group

:26:59. > :27:02.together you want to be nearer the front and try to minimise the risk

:27:03. > :27:06.of being caught out on the first sprint. The way the elimination race

:27:07. > :27:11.works is you do not want to be at the back of the field. He has had

:27:12. > :27:15.good World Championships already, Chris Latham, but as we have seen,

:27:16. > :27:19.it is about backing up and recovering and coming out to do it

:27:20. > :27:23.again. Yes, an excellent bronze in the scratch race, so really pleased

:27:24. > :27:27.for him for that. Sometimes your legs just don't play the game and

:27:28. > :27:30.you have a bad day so today was perhaps not one of his best but he

:27:31. > :27:41.already has a medal to his name at his age, already an impressive start

:27:42. > :27:43.to the season for him. On that recovery, Katie Archibald we saw

:27:44. > :27:45.this morning did not qualify for the individual pursuit, a big

:27:46. > :27:47.disappointment for her after the celebrations yesterday? Yes, it will

:27:48. > :27:50.have been, but she should not be disappointed because in my opinion

:27:51. > :27:53.the Omnium win was fabulous and she would have had to have gone really

:27:54. > :27:57.deep in that. I was so proud of her to win that, the Olympic event. I

:27:58. > :28:01.personally love individual pursuit and would have loved to see her

:28:02. > :28:04.challenging for that one. I know she will be disappointed but it was a

:28:05. > :28:08.huge ask yesterday, not just physically but you then have the

:28:09. > :28:13.tedium, dope controls, a lot of things going on after you have won

:28:14. > :28:15.in world title which the impact on your recovery next morning, saw an

:28:16. > :28:22.understandable performance from her, but there was with Ellie Dickinson,

:28:23. > :28:28.the other women, you know, it was a good morning for the British riders.

:28:29. > :28:33.This is her ride this morning. Can you tell even by looking at her that

:28:34. > :28:37.her legs are not quite a strong? I can see her head going down a little

:28:38. > :28:40.bit. She is very classy, good at holding that position and bringing

:28:41. > :28:45.the power down. She had a nice chaser from the Irish rider. You do

:28:46. > :28:48.not want to finish coming around somebody but the black line but they

:28:49. > :28:55.would have been a nice taste throughout the right. Three .31 is

:28:56. > :28:59.still a respectable pursuit time. I know she will not be happy with that

:29:00. > :29:02.but I think she really should be. After yesterday's efforts, I think

:29:03. > :29:05.we really could not have expected much more from her today so I am

:29:06. > :29:09.still pleased for her. Absolutely. Part of the whole experience of

:29:10. > :29:12.doing it is not just taking the race but all the media commitments. We

:29:13. > :29:17.will speak to Zarina later in the programme. After this, in fact, but

:29:18. > :29:27.let's join the men's Omnium -- we will speak to Katie later in the

:29:28. > :29:30.programme. Just underway, no eliminations yet, but they do come

:29:31. > :29:34.thick and fast as we know, know the races up and running Phillie... --

:29:35. > :29:49.fully up and running. Already scuttling across the track

:29:50. > :29:54.to make sure they're not the first one out. A big man a crop went out.

:29:55. > :30:09.There is a crash, the Polish rider and the gain. Casper

:30:10. > :30:15.Pedersen and Simov. It can't carry on without them otherwise they will

:30:16. > :30:20.be gaining places, so the flags will come out. Strategically a difficult

:30:21. > :30:24.time for the peloton, but a big benefit from being near the front.

:30:25. > :30:30.They are still tussling and it is neutralised at 50 K per hour. That

:30:31. > :30:34.didn't take long. We are well used to repair. Hopefully not a long one

:30:35. > :30:38.and the riders who have fallen should be back in the race soon,

:30:39. > :30:46.Pedersen is back on his bike, they just fiddling around -- they are

:30:47. > :30:53.just fiddling around with the Polish rider's bike. They are very robust

:30:54. > :30:57.machines, and they have to be careful, they all have spares, so

:30:58. > :31:05.they have called for the second bike, so the race will soon be under

:31:06. > :31:15.way and as we have seen before, it can be helpful in an event like

:31:16. > :31:22.this. He is actually fourth overall going into this race, Sajnok. You

:31:23. > :31:26.can see that they are still battering rareness of the race was

:31:27. > :31:32.on. Chris Latham was at the front. Two lads who have fallen off are at

:31:33. > :31:46.the back, so no change there. It is under once more. It will be the

:31:47. > :31:49.second elimination after this. Does look as though Sajnok is having a

:31:50. > :31:53.bit of a problem. Struggling at the back, working hard to try and stay

:31:54. > :31:57.on the coat-tails of the main group at Pedersen, the other one who felt,

:31:58. > :32:02.is going well down the back straight. You can see the speed

:32:03. > :32:05.differences, to go around the outside, you are probably going

:32:06. > :32:11.around about five kilometres per hour faster than at the bottom. I

:32:12. > :32:15.think Viktor Manakov has gone, the bronze-medallist in the omnium three

:32:16. > :32:20.years ago, he was the first rider out.

:32:21. > :32:38.Just looking at it at the moment, Sajnok finds himself at the tail end

:32:39. > :32:43.of the track and forces himself to is sprint. Olivera from Portugal is

:32:44. > :32:47.out. One rider behind him, kept him on the shoulder and kept flicking

:32:48. > :32:54.him up high. It looks like you'll keep deploying strategy. Chris

:32:55. > :32:57.Latham, difficult position at the moment, in the middle of the pack

:32:58. > :33:00.but lower than so as the wave starts to come over the top, there is

:33:01. > :33:08.nowhere for him to go, he will have to be careful. And the home riders

:33:09. > :33:14.having a problem as well. Dives down to the bottom of the track. It may

:33:15. > :33:18.be the Polish rider who has gone and if it is, that will be a big blow

:33:19. > :33:26.for him because he was in fourth place, as we mentioned earlier. And

:33:27. > :33:39.it is Hong Kong it is lunch and win. -- it is Win. It is so hard, you are

:33:40. > :33:49.suddenly up against a wall of riders and there is nowhere to go. Sajnok

:33:50. > :34:02.trying to battle his way together. It may be Korean rider, Park

:34:03. > :34:06.Sanghoon Park who is out. Again, our friend from Poland just about makes

:34:07. > :34:09.it on the line. Chris Latham has had what we can only describe as a

:34:10. > :34:13.lacklustre start to this competition, lying in last at the

:34:14. > :34:17.moment but he seems to be finding his way now and starting to write

:34:18. > :34:24.this pretty cannily. Looks like he is finding his legs a bit as he

:34:25. > :34:27.goes. Casper Pedersen is a word, one of the riders who fell at the start.

:34:28. > :34:35.Chris Latham leads the main field around. This prince come thick and

:34:36. > :34:39.fast in the omnium, you have to be wary of sitting at the front. A bit

:34:40. > :34:44.of a battle further back and it involves Albert ta is and he is the

:34:45. > :34:50.leader at the moment, he has work to do as Torres is forced to try and

:34:51. > :34:58.sprint his way into staying in the competition and it is Maldonado from

:34:59. > :35:03.Mexico, I think, who will be out. Chris Latham on the inside in danger

:35:04. > :35:08.of getting squeezed at the moment, but I think he is far enough

:35:09. > :35:15.forward. The Belgian lives through in the predominantly -- lives

:35:16. > :35:26.through, Thomas from France in the blue. There is a crash and the

:35:27. > :35:30.builder has gone down -- the Dutch rider has gone down. The neutral

:35:31. > :35:35.flag comes out. He is still sitting on the floor at the moment. We will

:35:36. > :35:42.take a look. He actually did go down to the right, that was quite a knock

:35:43. > :35:47.he took to the head. They are so, so top these riders. He is up now and

:35:48. > :35:54.calling for a bike. There are no magic sponge in this event. Provided

:35:55. > :36:00.he doesn't start riding in the wrong direction, we will know he is OK. No

:36:01. > :36:06.major damage, just a few scrapes. What a blow to the head he took,

:36:07. > :36:13.though. Fortunately seems to be OK and straight back into the action.

:36:14. > :36:23.Two minor delays. Six riders out and it is thinning out. Just in front of

:36:24. > :36:28.him. And another crash. And the Polish rider is down to the second

:36:29. > :36:34.time in the race. Sajnok hits the deck for the second time in the

:36:35. > :36:40.race. He has not got much skin left to lose, to be honest. It will soon

:36:41. > :36:47.be coming days and, it has so many holes in. He nearly held it there.

:36:48. > :36:54.That was quite impressive. He held it to make sure he got over the line

:36:55. > :37:00.before the last rider. He's getting up again, let's hope it is third

:37:01. > :37:05.time lucky. The front tire rolls, which is really bad, that should

:37:06. > :37:14.never happen. They are glued on to the rim with several coats of a

:37:15. > :37:21.decent. We have some damage to the track, so I think it might stay

:37:22. > :37:28.neutralised per a little bit. Now, they may actually, are they going to

:37:29. > :37:32.stop the race? No. Saying no elimination. This is a really

:37:33. > :37:37.precarious thing to do because the guys looking at the track have

:37:38. > :37:43.totally forgotten there is a marauding bunch coming around. They

:37:44. > :37:50.have to make a choice now, you stop the race or you carry on. What is

:37:51. > :37:57.Sajnok doing, getting up to speed or struggling and realising his race is

:37:58. > :38:05.run. I think he is coming around... I think they will stop the race,

:38:06. > :38:13.they can't take the risk, it is right on the finish line. He is

:38:14. > :38:17.saying on YouGov. There was a big discussion I was watching and they

:38:18. > :38:27.have decided they can carry on unilaterally. Thomas of France going

:38:28. > :38:32.around the outside, Sam Welsford of Australia and Torres is having to

:38:33. > :38:38.sprints to try and stay in it. He tried to barge Roman Gladysh of

:38:39. > :38:46.Ukraine out of the way, there was no room. But the rider out is Shunsuke

:38:47. > :38:51.Imamura from Japan, but the real action is taking place up towards

:38:52. > :38:57.the fence. And Sajnok from Poland, looks a bit of a sorry sight, he is

:38:58. > :39:03.coming out of the race. Poor chap crashing twice in the matter of a

:39:04. > :39:08.few laps. He has been eliminated. And so now has Roman Gladysh, I

:39:09. > :39:13.think, from the Ukraine. Yes, he has gone, four time national champion.

:39:14. > :39:18.We are slowly getting through the field, stoppages and all. Nine Chris

:39:19. > :39:24.Latham is still in there, having a much better race than his first two.

:39:25. > :39:28.In a difficult position again, down the bottom but already starting to

:39:29. > :39:33.think about getting himself out. He has got nowhere to go at the moment.

:39:34. > :39:37.He might be in trouble here with everyone going around him. He tries

:39:38. > :39:42.to dive through on the inside and will he just about stay in? If he is

:39:43. > :39:49.out, it will be no more than a third of a wheel and he is out. Chris

:39:50. > :39:54.Latham eliminated. It is so tempting to use the blue Cote d'Azur to push

:39:55. > :40:00.yourself forward but if you can be instantly out of the race. Mark

:40:01. > :40:05.Cavendish did that sub such as the pace being said by Aaron Gate that

:40:06. > :40:11.it is just a long line and that makes it very difficult if you are

:40:12. > :40:23.trapped at the back. Aaron Gate leading, Shunsuke Imamura second,

:40:24. > :40:29.well stood third, Thomas in fourth. De Wylder the latest rider

:40:30. > :40:33.eliminated. He will be disappointed. Gives him a chance to attend to his

:40:34. > :40:44.burns, having fallen at the start of the race. Aaron Gate leading. A bit

:40:45. > :40:51.of a stretch for the Kazakis rider and he will be out. This is

:40:52. > :40:55.reasonable tactic by the New Zealander, because it is a constant

:40:56. > :40:58.pace and it is not the sprints Prince that do the damage and the

:40:59. > :41:11.others have been happy to let him do that. Gael Suter going around the

:41:12. > :41:14.outside in the thick of the bunch. Thomas and Souter they riders at the

:41:15. > :41:21.front and Torres of Spain having to sprint hard -- Saint Gael Suter the

:41:22. > :41:26.riders at the front. Torres makes it once again and Aaron Gate, who was

:41:27. > :41:33.leading the so long, is out, caught on the line. Remarkable, isn't it?

:41:34. > :41:39.The kiss of death, saying it was a reasonable tactic. He won't be happy

:41:40. > :41:43.with you. Sam Welsford leaves them ran once more and Torres has decided

:41:44. > :41:48.he needs to stay at the front, having been loitering at the back.

:41:49. > :41:55.We haven't mentioned Sam Welsford and he is on storming form at the

:41:56. > :42:06.moment. Is the latest rider to go, Shunsuke Imamura. Australia

:42:07. > :42:10.incredible at those kind of paces. So he has plenty in the tank. Lots

:42:11. > :42:13.of racing and lots of points on offer in terms of the overall

:42:14. > :42:21.competition. Benjamin Thomas leads them around. Torres is moving around

:42:22. > :42:29.the outside. The Dutch rider getting involved as well. Suter forced to

:42:30. > :42:37.sprint really hard and I am not sure he has made it. It has got to be

:42:38. > :42:41.totally at the judges' discretion. Can be a photo finish and they

:42:42. > :42:47.needed one there. Suter is the man who is out, the European scratch

:42:48. > :42:51.race champion and still the rider at the front, from Belarus, we haven't

:42:52. > :42:59.seen much of him near the front but he has quietly stayed in the race.

:43:00. > :43:02.Playing the same sprinting game, laying off and coming at them fast.

:43:03. > :43:13.Torres may find it tough as they come towards the line. I think it is

:43:14. > :43:18.number five. It is. Yes, the rider from Belarus, the 22-year-old. I

:43:19. > :43:23.think we are seeing a new tactic, to lay off in the back straight and

:43:24. > :43:31.charge and just come in time, using the whole height of the banking.

:43:32. > :43:40.Simone Consonni having a little luck. Torres doesn't fancy having a

:43:41. > :43:47.head-to-head with Eefting. Roy Eefting is the latest rider out.

:43:48. > :43:51.When it is moving around the bottom, it is difficult to deploy the same

:43:52. > :43:54.tactic, you haven't got the height and at this point, he hasn't got the

:43:55. > :44:05.race. Just five riders left in this event. Absolutely brutal. Simone

:44:06. > :44:10.Consonni, the medallist in Richmond a couple of years ago, with Torres

:44:11. > :44:14.Justin Fraser them. Thomas of France in third place coming onto the

:44:15. > :44:21.Italian's shoulder -- just in front of them. Just held him back on

:44:22. > :44:31.purpose and I think he is the one we have been talking about, he has been

:44:32. > :44:35.in the wheels the whole race. Now it is turning into a big match sprint

:44:36. > :44:44.as all four look at each other, they are all completely spent. Sper

:44:45. > :44:52.geekier Eefting won the on in a World Cup meeting in Calais months

:44:53. > :44:56.ago. He has decided he's going to have a go, Torres. He has thought

:44:57. > :45:00.better of it, his tank is empty Finnair. His heart was in it but his

:45:01. > :45:08.legs were somewhere else. And then there were three. One more out

:45:09. > :45:17.before the final sprint. As a pigeon swoops across and nearly lands in

:45:18. > :45:24.our commentary position. Very close. Consonni leads, Welsford in second

:45:25. > :45:29.place. Thomas of France's in third. -- of France is in third. Thomas

:45:30. > :45:33.trying to make a bit of a move, get a little bit of hide. Welsford

:45:34. > :45:39.trying to hold him at arms length and he is more than capable of doing

:45:40. > :45:43.so. Almost toying with the other riders at times. It is a very

:45:44. > :45:46.defensive game, I am not going to try and win, I will make you lose

:45:47. > :45:50.and effective it has been and come to the fore in the last few laps,

:45:51. > :45:56.really got some strength. But has it got the sprint, that is what he will

:45:57. > :46:03.need? He will need as friend against Consonni from Italy. It starts now

:46:04. > :46:06.and he knows to accelerate on the straight and he has got the

:46:07. > :46:12.strength. He has the advantage over the Italian rider, does the Italian

:46:13. > :46:15.have enough to come back? No, the Australian wins it, he wins the

:46:16. > :46:20.elimination race and the men's omnium and he did it in a very

:46:21. > :46:23.dominant style, a canny ride all the way through from Sam Welsford. Let

:46:24. > :46:28.everybody else do the hard work and then just kept everyone at arm's

:46:29. > :46:31.length and looked in complete control of the situation throughout

:46:32. > :46:37.the race, including in the latter stages. Tactic, skill and

:46:38. > :46:41.physiology. We hardly talked about him, he wrote it quietly and then

:46:42. > :46:44.started to deploy some tactics, making sure he held some other

:46:45. > :46:45.people behind him and when he actually launched, there was no

:46:46. > :46:54.answer. strong I think arguably the

:46:55. > :46:58.physically strongest rider in this race. Interestingly, provisionally I

:46:59. > :47:01.think it moves them to seventh place overall. He looked really good there

:47:02. > :47:09.and I think we can expect more than him. Yes. We have already seen in

:47:10. > :47:13.this there are an awful lot of points left on offer and you can

:47:14. > :47:17.really turn it on its head. Torres was dicing with death a few times in

:47:18. > :47:21.that elimination race but hung on long enough to collect a hatful of

:47:22. > :47:28.points to preserve his lead in the competition, but it was close-run at

:47:29. > :47:34.times from fairly early on. Yes, I wouldn't put that gold medal

:47:35. > :47:39.pastern. There is the opening situation. Torres Spain leads the

:47:40. > :47:43.way on hundred and 12 points. A few clear of Benjamin Thomas from

:47:44. > :47:50.France. Max buyer of Germany in third place. But Sam Welsford,

:47:51. > :47:54.winning that, moving up to seven. STUDIO: It is brutal, isn't it? So

:47:55. > :47:58.many crashes in that one, but yesterday we saw Katie Archibald

:47:59. > :48:02.finishing fifth in the elimination race, meaning she went into the

:48:03. > :48:08.final Omnium event level on points with Amy Cure and she did enough to

:48:09. > :48:12.win the whole thing. And it is difficult, Jo, and she said in her

:48:13. > :48:16.interview afterward she felt it was almost dirty tactics to keep on Amy

:48:17. > :48:21.Cure but she felt she had to. Yes, I don't know if it is dirty because

:48:22. > :48:26.you have to do that in a bike race. Katie she said she used her team

:48:27. > :48:28.pursuit background as well, following that, but really it came

:48:29. > :48:32.down to her being the best on the day. If anything she was slightly

:48:33. > :48:34.critical of herself in her interview but I guess that is the mark of a

:48:35. > :48:41.really good champion, she always wants to be better. For me she was

:48:42. > :48:45.incredible yesterday. Chris, how difficult do you feel it is, four

:48:46. > :48:52.events in one day rather than three, three, then they on the next? Test

:48:53. > :48:54.of all-round skill and ability it should have shorter and longer

:48:55. > :49:00.events, the Ducasse alone, and it seems to be they are focusing on a

:49:01. > :49:08.bunch race, so why not just have one -- that the ... And I will not

:49:09. > :49:13.complain too much because it is great for Katie and the team but the

:49:14. > :49:16.UCI are making a lot of changes here and they are not all popular. But if

:49:17. > :49:21.we make sure we are as prepared as everybody else it is a good thing

:49:22. > :49:25.for Team GB. And for the very first time in her life Katie to pull on

:49:26. > :49:29.the rainbow jersey and is still wearing it today. We will head back

:49:30. > :49:36.to Hong Kong because she is alongside Jill Douglas. Yes, Katie

:49:37. > :49:38.was watching that elimination race on the edge of receipt. I felt you

:49:39. > :49:44.were loving every minute because it was so exciting. Out of one? Yes,

:49:45. > :49:47.horrible, jumping out of our skin at every horrible moment, but I think

:49:48. > :49:52.Chris did pretty well. But like you say, really exciting race

:49:53. > :49:57.regardless. I think he did well to stay up, so many tumbles over the

:49:58. > :50:00.course. Yesterday was long, like a bit heavy, we saw you on the

:50:01. > :50:07.individual pursuit just missing out on a medal, but overall how do you

:50:08. > :50:10.feel today? Not fantastic. Yes, pretty disappointed with the

:50:11. > :50:16.qualifying score, kind of embarrassed, if I'm honest. A bit of

:50:17. > :50:23.a boot in this. It smells really nice, this, because I have covered

:50:24. > :50:27.it in perfume to hide the. LAUGHTER

:50:28. > :50:31.But I put in a lot of work to try to achieve something with the pursuit

:50:32. > :50:35.and it just was not doable. I kind of woke up in agony, if I'm honest.

:50:36. > :50:40.I thought warming up, I could still give it a good go and I think I made

:50:41. > :50:43.kind of an acceptable standard but realistically I have not moved on

:50:44. > :50:49.anywhere from two years ago, how it seems on paper. I don't feel so good

:50:50. > :50:55.about that. I think you're beating yourself up a little because we saw

:50:56. > :50:58.you perform so well yesterday, a sapping four bunch races in order to

:50:59. > :51:01.get that rainbow jersey which you absolutely deserved. I mean you

:51:02. > :51:07.really stormed to victory in that last race. And of course with all

:51:08. > :51:10.that comes with that world title, the ceremonies, the press, it was a

:51:11. > :51:16.long night for you and I hardly surprised you felt a little heavy

:51:17. > :51:20.today and a bit sore. Can you know appreciate the fact you are a world

:51:21. > :51:24.champion, individually, after the effort yesterday? Yes, a bit

:51:25. > :51:28.bizarre, isn't it? The amount of people I have had messaging me,

:51:29. > :51:32.forgetting her many friends I had! It has been tasted to soak it up.

:51:33. > :51:36.Maybe I would have slept better without quite so many messages!

:51:37. > :51:40.LAUGHTER No, it feels fantastic. I know they

:51:41. > :51:43.were absolutely thrilled back in the UK, lots of fans watching, and of

:51:44. > :51:48.course some very good friends of yours in the studio. I will let one

:51:49. > :51:55.or two of them chat to you now. I know Jo is standing by. I will give

:51:56. > :52:01.you my microphone. Hi, Katie, world champ. Are you feeling? Great. Is

:52:02. > :52:05.anyone listening in or is it just you and me? It is out on BBC Two so

:52:06. > :52:13.it as everybody! LAUGHTER

:52:14. > :52:16.Oh, dear. OK. We are really proud of user don't feel embarrassed today.

:52:17. > :52:21.How is morale in the team? I think the gold must have boosted

:52:22. > :52:24.everybody? Yes, fantastic. All the girls are getting ready for the

:52:25. > :52:33.women's madison, but actually feeling really good getting ready

:52:34. > :52:36.for racing with Elinor, jumping around the music trying to distract

:52:37. > :52:46.ourselves, so I am glad to be part of it went in to see what happens.

:52:47. > :52:50.Hi, Katie. Chris here. Hello. Congratulations. We're also proud of

:52:51. > :52:53.you. You should not be yourself up at all. I think you did really well

:52:54. > :52:56.and today it is one of the hardest things to back-up, after the

:52:57. > :52:59.emotional high and not getting much sleep. If you look back on your

:53:00. > :53:04.individual pursuit performance and you realise, OK, not what you hoped

:53:05. > :53:08.for, but it is an Olympic event, the Omnium, and has to be priority. And

:53:09. > :53:13.there will be great practice by the Olympics when you have one or two to

:53:14. > :53:16.potential and you will be ready for it. Yes, hopefully. One of the

:53:17. > :53:23.biggest compliments I had actually was somebody who likened my very

:53:24. > :53:27.close loss to your keirin final and I thought it was a bit of a reach,

:53:28. > :53:31.but it was nice anyway. LAUGHTER

:53:32. > :53:37.You had us all on our toes. It was absolutely fantastic. Well done.

:53:38. > :53:41.Yes, you did. And thank you, Katie, for coming to speak to us today. And

:53:42. > :53:46.that rainbow jersey looks good on you. Keep it on! Katie Archibald,

:53:47. > :53:49.the newest world champion for Great Britain, having won. Omnium

:53:50. > :53:52.yesterday. As you can tell she is still disappointed with her

:53:53. > :53:55.individual pursuit performance this morning and it is difficult to come

:53:56. > :53:58.out and perform at that level when you have just won a massive

:53:59. > :54:02.multidiscipline event like the Omnium but sometimes in the British

:54:03. > :54:08.team, such is its depth of talent, you get a real surprise. Callum

:54:09. > :54:13.Skinner had gone out of the spread, so we thought no Medel for Britain,

:54:14. > :54:17.but we were not banking on Ryan Owens who this morning, Chris,

:54:18. > :54:23.performed against a really experienced German sprinter, the guy

:54:24. > :54:29.who put out Callum Skinner? Yes, I have not actually what is this yet

:54:30. > :54:34.so it is great to see. It went to a decider, best of three. I'm catching

:54:35. > :54:38.him napping... With tired legs here, the German closing the gap, but just

:54:39. > :54:43.enough to hang on and Ryan will be absolutely delighted with this.

:54:44. > :54:47.10.2, last 200 metres, that borrowed, and exceptional

:54:48. > :54:50.performance from him. The format is best-of-3, Ryan Owens with the

:54:51. > :54:58.advantage, and this is the second race, and the German knowing he has

:54:59. > :55:04.to win it to stay in... Yes, a bit of a drag race, knowing he has the

:55:05. > :55:09.get him on the hip. A classic drag race here, and Ryan came out in the

:55:10. > :55:18.red, little fraction, and, yes, he got it. There was not much more Ryan

:55:19. > :55:30.could have done their, a classic drag race and you need to keep an

:55:31. > :55:33.eye on Niederlag because he has pushed out Ryan Owens and although

:55:34. > :55:38.Niederlag wins this deciding spread he actually gets relegated, and that

:55:39. > :55:42.is why Ryan Owens is through to today's race. The semifinals. Yes,

:55:43. > :55:51.that just happened after the 200 metre line. I tell you what, in it.

:55:52. > :55:55.Yes, based on the right we saw -- race that we saw in the women's

:55:56. > :56:00.sprint where they let it go, and, you know, I am surprised that that

:56:01. > :56:04.one, delighted obviously, great for Team GB, but the officials seem to

:56:05. > :56:15.be a little inconsistent in these championships. This means Ryan

:56:16. > :56:20.Owens' draw, up against the Dutchman, Harrie Lavreysen. Is that

:56:21. > :56:31.good? Similar times, both 9.8s, and I think it is his best chance of

:56:32. > :56:34.making the final. Dmitriev is very experienced. Even if Ryan finished

:56:35. > :56:38.fourth, great performance, but I think now he will be thinking about

:56:39. > :56:47.one more semifinal to get himself into that gold medal ride off. Is

:56:48. > :56:50.it, at this stage, in a world summit, how much do nurse play a

:56:51. > :56:56.part? Huge part but you can use them to your advantage. Sometimes having

:56:57. > :57:01.no expectation, you know, nobody expecting him to win the gold medal,

:57:02. > :57:13.it could surprise us. He is the one who has come in under the radar.

:57:14. > :57:21.COMMENTATOR: Here we go. Heat one, race number one, and Denis Dmitriev,

:57:22. > :57:23.who has won Medel year for each of the last four years but has never

:57:24. > :57:26.been world champion, and I think he will never have a better chance than

:57:27. > :57:32.this one potentially. He is the man with the experienced as they get

:57:33. > :57:36.ready for the start of this race. Ethan Mitchell, his opponent from

:57:37. > :57:41.New Zealand, the 26-year-old, is known as a team rider rather than an

:57:42. > :57:47.individual sprinter. He is the times the team sprint champion of the

:57:48. > :57:53.world, including this year. Dmitriev is I think the one with the

:57:54. > :57:57.advantage here, very strong qualifying rounds, and looked very

:57:58. > :58:02.strong since the competition proper has got underway. Yes, he has looked

:58:03. > :58:05.very strong so far, in great form, Dmitriev. But it starts to get tough

:58:06. > :58:11.now obviously in the final stages. Ethan Mitchell will lead them

:58:12. > :58:19.through for the first lap of three here. The designated rider to lead,

:58:20. > :58:28.as they slowly wander into the back straight. Under the saddle, and they

:58:29. > :58:31.have to have one of those, to have parity, and that is the Inn res

:58:32. > :58:35.camera we are getting used to seeing the Doidge from. Sometimes there are

:58:36. > :58:41.two boxes and the second one is popular now for the power data from

:58:42. > :58:45.the riders for post race analysis. Great for us because they give us

:58:46. > :58:50.some lovely shots, but I've be very annoying for people in aerodynamics

:58:51. > :58:56.like yourself? Well, we know it is a bit of a brick, but we will give

:58:57. > :59:01.everybody one, so it is their! Out the back, you are managing chaos by

:59:02. > :59:07.that point on the bait anyway, two big cylindrical legs pumping up and

:59:08. > :59:10.down at 120 rpm, so very hard to do much other than minimise the...

:59:11. > :59:17.Something else drawn in the mix, at the back end of the bike. One lap

:59:18. > :59:27.completed. Still the calm before the storm here in this first semifinal

:59:28. > :59:32.matchup between the vastly experienced sprint rider from

:59:33. > :59:38.Russia, Denis Dmitriev, in his 30s now, against Easton Mitchell, so

:59:39. > :59:42.used to having Sam Webster and Eddie Dawkins alongside him, going for

:59:43. > :59:52.World Championship gold. Sparring begins. Keeping his eye on the

:59:53. > :59:58.Russian rider, and you recall, Dmitriev is off, and Mitchell... Is

:59:59. > :00:06.not going to close that gap. Dmitriev utterly dominant here. Ten

:00:07. > :00:10.dead riding a race like that! Incredible. It is as if for Mitchell

:00:11. > :00:14.it was a training ride and Dmitriev thought he would just sprint round

:00:15. > :00:19.the outside, incredible difference in power. We said he looked in great

:00:20. > :00:25.form before the ride there and he just showed it once again. Just look

:00:26. > :00:30.at that. Even at ten dead, and measured right. He is looking back

:00:31. > :00:33.at several points here, and Mitchell is just stunned, just trying to get

:00:34. > :00:43.on his wheel, never mind getting past. He will take some beating, won

:00:44. > :00:49.the? Dmitriev? I think that statement cannot be emphasised

:00:50. > :00:52.enough here. Ryan Owens from Great Britain, the 21-year-old, against

:00:53. > :00:56.Harrie Lavreysen from the Netherlands. Two Young sprinters,

:00:57. > :00:58.and the Dutch rider is just 20, younger than Ryan Owens. There is

:00:59. > :01:05.confirmation of the result from the first race.

:01:06. > :01:11.Dmitriev is one ride away from making it into the world

:01:12. > :01:17.championship final. And I can see just off the track come here comes

:01:18. > :01:21.the Dutch rider, he will be the first up, as Dmitriev slowly winds

:01:22. > :01:27.it then. Good crowd in here again for this Saturday evening session.

:01:28. > :01:30.Many of them hoping that Wai Sze Lee would get her second medal of these

:01:31. > :01:36.championships, was quite a big, finishing in fourth place in the

:01:37. > :01:43.500m time trial. Here is Harrie Lavreysen, and the jury cries for

:01:44. > :01:47.both of these athletes. The Dutchman won the team sprint silver medal

:01:48. > :01:52.right at the start of this championships, his first major

:01:53. > :01:55.international medal. He finished second in the Dutch national

:01:56. > :02:00.championships that year, bitter by Geoffrey Haviland. There is a slight

:02:01. > :02:08.delay, an issue with Ryan Owens' chut. They'll specialised custom

:02:09. > :02:11.shoes, there is no loss power in the stretch of the issue, and it looks

:02:12. > :02:16.like there was a lace problem. There is nothing of them, they weigh less

:02:17. > :02:20.than 100 grams, so incredibly light and small. They'll still covering

:02:21. > :02:26.them with the straps but using flat Velcro ones to try and contain some

:02:27. > :02:33.of that power. It is an insurance measure, really, so any twisting of

:02:34. > :02:39.the foot won't release the shoe from the pedal. We saw the same footage

:02:40. > :02:43.as they did back in the studio, but it wasn't what was actually on

:02:44. > :02:50.camera, it was an incident elsewhere they had seen and penalised, so here

:02:51. > :02:54.by rights, I think. What I liked about Ryan Owens, in all of the

:02:55. > :03:00.rights against need a lag, he had a plan, he was feisty and at every

:03:01. > :03:04.point in the race was trying to think of a way to win the race, even

:03:05. > :03:09.if he wasn't in the box seat. You could feel the fact that it wasn't a

:03:10. > :03:16.case of, oh, no, what has just happened? It was, "How do I win?"

:03:17. > :03:19.Even half a lap to go in an almost impossible situation, I am going to

:03:20. > :03:26.dive up the track, gain some height and come again and it was refreshing

:03:27. > :03:31.to watch. Here we go, best of three semifinal in the men's match sprint.

:03:32. > :03:37.We were expecting to see Callum Skinner at the business end of this

:03:38. > :03:44.competition, beaten by Jason Kenny any Olympic final, but he was out

:03:45. > :03:46.yesterday and instead, it is Ryan Owens representing Great Britain,

:03:47. > :03:52.flying the flag against Harrie Lavreysen of the Netherlands. A

:03:53. > :03:57.great opportunity for him and as we talked about in the studio, it is an

:03:58. > :04:01.opportunity, when you exceed expectations, it is an adventure and

:04:02. > :04:05.exciting, rather than pressure and stress and it is very different

:04:06. > :04:09.being up and coming than having the success and it is expected of you.

:04:10. > :04:13.He is in this wonderful niche now where he gets to see how good he can

:04:14. > :04:21.be and if it doesn't come off, he has lost nothing, so great position

:04:22. > :04:27.for him be in. Slow and steady, the real race still to get under way.

:04:28. > :04:36.Watching each other like hawks, looking for every movement. Two laps

:04:37. > :04:40.to go as they come round into the finishing straight, they will pull

:04:41. > :04:43.away on the Segway as we switch to the wider angle, the riders start to

:04:44. > :04:52.come at the track, gain height and some speed. Lavereysen ducking

:04:53. > :04:56.around, really high on the track, swooping down. While he is doing

:04:57. > :05:01.that, he is gaining pace all the time and closing in on Owens, which

:05:02. > :05:07.is what it once, try and suck him in but with a lap to go, he takes it

:05:08. > :05:10.on. A searing burst of pace from the British rider but here comes the

:05:11. > :05:14.Dutchman, Lavereysen close the gap and drawers onto the shoulder, but

:05:15. > :05:19.Dmitriev is fighting him all the way that he can't hold of. Harrie

:05:20. > :05:25.Lavreysen, superb sprinting from the Dutchman, he takes it 1-0. A little

:05:26. > :05:29.bit of inexperience, he was suckered into going early and the gap wasn't

:05:30. > :05:34.an advantage, it was exactly what the Dutchman wanted, he wanted to be

:05:35. > :05:38.led out, so he gave him 10m and had the perfect lead out to accelerate

:05:39. > :05:42.into the slipstream and comes down the back straight, it was perfect

:05:43. > :05:47.for him. He will look at that video and cringe a bit. The fight is there

:05:48. > :05:52.and the physiology is there, he is certainly physically as good, so I

:05:53. > :05:57.think he can come back in this one but that one was tactics, not power.

:05:58. > :06:02.Lavereysen from the Netherlands takes the first ride. Ryan Owens has

:06:03. > :06:08.to win the next matchup, otherwise it will be bronze at best for him.

:06:09. > :06:11.But it is a big learning curve, a steep learning curve and he has done

:06:12. > :06:17.well to make it to the semifinals and he is not out of it yet. Denis

:06:18. > :06:21.Dmitriev dominant against Ethan Mitchell in their first ride and

:06:22. > :06:26.Harrie Lavreysen, the 20-year-old from the Netherlands, beating Ryan

:06:27. > :06:29.Owens in their first race. CLARE BALDING: get let's the

:06:30. > :06:35.thoughts of Sir Chris Hoy on rock Ryan Owens did and what he might do

:06:36. > :06:38.differently in the next race. I think Chris Baldwin nailed it by

:06:39. > :06:42.saying he was suckered into going early. He was suckered into going

:06:43. > :06:45.into the gap. You want to keep your opponent post you but sometimes,

:06:46. > :06:50.when there is the begin of gap, you think you can go early and he has

:06:51. > :06:54.gone here, Lavereysen has the height and although it looks like a big

:06:55. > :06:58.gap, it is the perfect slipstream to draw into, you get the slingshot

:06:59. > :07:03.effect and you see the difference in speed here. It was a great ride from

:07:04. > :07:09.the Dutchman, to be fair, very mature for a young rider to have

:07:10. > :07:11.that calmness under pressure. It is difficult to both riders because

:07:12. > :07:15.normally when you are racing against an opponent, you have seen them many

:07:16. > :07:19.times and you know their tactics but it is almost racing blind, guessing

:07:20. > :07:25.what they are hoping to do. Clearly the Dutch rider likes to go for a

:07:26. > :07:29.ride from the back and rushing his opponent, so Ryan could surprise in,

:07:30. > :07:34.like he did against need a lag, and go for a long one, but the Dutch

:07:35. > :07:38.riders will be aware of that now, everyone who goes against Ryan will

:07:39. > :07:41.be concerned he will attack at the start, it is harder to catch them

:07:42. > :07:47.unaware. Tactics playing a huge part, we will see his second-rate

:07:48. > :07:51.shortly. We will sue the women's madison shortly, over 120 laps and

:07:52. > :07:54.Emily Nelson and Elinor Barker will be Great Britain's team, but first,

:07:55. > :08:02.let's find out how it works with Chris Boardman.

:08:03. > :08:07.Promising to be chaotic and elegant at the same time, the madison is

:08:08. > :08:11.arguably the most engaging of all track disciplines. In fact, the

:08:12. > :08:17.action can explode anywhere on the track, making it rather challenging

:08:18. > :08:22.to keep where the frontiers, making it difficult for spectators and

:08:23. > :08:29.commentators alike. Cavendish on the deck, picks himself up. In essence,

:08:30. > :08:32.the points race with points awarded every ten laps. Gaining a lab gets a

:08:33. > :08:39.20 point bonus and for extra spice, the final sprint points are doubled.

:08:40. > :08:44.Four teams of two riders, the action is not doubled, it is cubed.

:08:45. > :08:47.Arresting rider to enter the race must make physical contact with a

:08:48. > :08:51.team-mate, usually achieved with a move known as a hand sling. The

:08:52. > :08:57.rider circling out of the race drops down, using the height of the track

:08:58. > :09:01.to accelerate. The in race team-mate switches position to the centre of

:09:02. > :09:05.bars for stability and reaches for their counterpart's hand. The

:09:06. > :09:12.kinetic energy of the past the rider is transferred and all the while,

:09:13. > :09:15.the race carries on around them. The race changeover lasts around one

:09:16. > :09:20.second, and that is the only chance to communicate with your team-mate.

:09:21. > :09:23.A rider who has done a 32nd stint is unlikely to win a sprint against an

:09:24. > :09:28.opponent who has just entered the fray, so teams can enter fresh legs

:09:29. > :09:34.within one second of the sprint. Those that are understandably spent

:09:35. > :09:38.are exposed to attack from those who are not, which means lap gains or

:09:39. > :09:41.bosses happen quickly. In the madison, even the best teams must

:09:42. > :09:46.choose which battle they are to lose in order to win the war. That sounds

:09:47. > :09:51.in strategic but in a sense, it isn't. To react to the constantly

:09:52. > :09:55.changing race, riders have do ride on pure instinct, weighing up the

:09:56. > :09:59.potential gains and risks several times per second and in my view,

:10:00. > :10:03.that is what makes the madison the most enthralling of all track

:10:04. > :10:06.disciplines to watch. And it is also why it is so exciting that for the

:10:07. > :10:10.first time after World Championships, we have a women's

:10:11. > :10:16.madison. Joe, tell us about Elinor Barker and Emily Nelson and how they

:10:17. > :10:19.will work this together. It is interesting, the first one at a

:10:20. > :10:23.World Championships. They have plenty of experience of riding

:10:24. > :10:27.madisons at lower levels but the big thing is a lot of the teams are

:10:28. > :10:32.unknown, you can't look back at footage and see how the other

:10:33. > :10:35.nations ride. I think they will try and Mark opponents, the ones they

:10:36. > :10:38.know will be a threat, but basically try and stick to their plan and

:10:39. > :10:44.adapting as they go, anything can happen. Emily is quite young, Elinor

:10:45. > :10:47.is slightly more experience, being an Olympic champion, but they should

:10:48. > :10:53.be a really good pairing. Let's hear from them, they have been speaking

:10:54. > :10:56.to Rob Hatch. I did the senior Europeans, the madison, and we got

:10:57. > :11:03.silver and it was a fantastic event, it is so fast and furious and no one

:11:04. > :11:08.really knows what is going on, but you do know, so it is exciting. It

:11:09. > :11:11.makes other races look so simple and straightforward and there is so much

:11:12. > :11:15.more thinking involved, because even though you are sharing the work with

:11:16. > :11:19.another rider and taking rests, you have to think so much more because

:11:20. > :11:22.you have these two seconds to communicate when you change and that

:11:23. > :11:25.is it, so you really have to try and campus pay to watch your team-mate

:11:26. > :11:29.is going to do as well as the other teams and there's a lot to think

:11:30. > :11:34.about -- you have to try and anticipate watch your is going to

:11:35. > :11:37.do. They said that to help of preparation, they raised it with

:11:38. > :11:44.Manon Lloyd in Glasgow and they won, despite the fact that Katie had

:11:45. > :11:51.broken her wrist halfway through, which is amazing, because you do

:11:52. > :11:54.needed as you pull each other along. The race is just under way, let's

:11:55. > :12:02.rejoin Chris Boardman and Simon Brotherton.

:12:03. > :12:05.Thanks. 119 laps to go in this first ever women's madison at world

:12:06. > :12:13.championship level. USA on the front at the moment, Timberlake iced --

:12:14. > :12:19.Kimberly diced are already a world champion in the team pursuit, what a

:12:20. > :12:24.competition between the USA and Australia. Mexico in second place in

:12:25. > :12:34.the green and white and coming through on the outside is the

:12:35. > :12:39.Ukraine. Just getting under way, we have high expectations, it is almost

:12:40. > :12:42.impossible for it not to be exciting, certainly anticipation in

:12:43. > :12:46.the commentary box because there can beat action anywhere at any time,

:12:47. > :12:52.with riders in and out of the race and it can get quite complex, but

:12:53. > :12:59.that is part of its beauty, it is an amazing thing to watch. Sophia Ali

:13:00. > :13:06.Oler one two medals at the World Championships three years ago. She

:13:07. > :13:11.is being followed at the moment by Ukraine and New Zealand going

:13:12. > :13:15.through, Racquel Sheath. Sheath and Drummond Road together in Los

:13:16. > :13:21.Angeles in the World Cup madison a couple of months ago. So we have a

:13:22. > :13:26.few pairings who already are used to racing alongside each other, even

:13:27. > :13:34.though there haven't been many top-level women's madison is races

:13:35. > :13:38.as yet. Is such a shame it was lost on the Olympics, I hope this is the

:13:39. > :13:47.start of a campaign to bring it back to the Olympics. Already we have a

:13:48. > :13:53.crash. It looks like it is Ireland who are down. Both of them. In this

:13:54. > :13:57.instance, they have four laps to get back into this race, two less than

:13:58. > :14:05.other distance events, but if both are down, they have four laps down.

:14:06. > :14:13.Both Lydias on the deck but both on their feet. Italy lead the way with

:14:14. > :14:19.Barbieri who won the scratch race. Belgium are in second place, we will

:14:20. > :14:24.keep an eye on them. They have got to be one of the favourites and the

:14:25. > :14:29.Italians will push them hard. They are getting ready for the sprint,

:14:30. > :14:34.they have been trying to position themselves, and the British team

:14:35. > :14:39.have come in beautifully with a lap to go. Super riding by Emily Nelson,

:14:40. > :14:44.chased by Belgium, France and Italy but Britain time that to perfection.

:14:45. > :14:47.Emily Nelson claiming the first points on offer. She almost couldn't

:14:48. > :14:52.believe that, I don't think they were intending to go for the first

:14:53. > :14:56.sprint but time did beautifully as everyone else was looking for their

:14:57. > :15:00.partner, found a gap and why not? Right now, they are persisting with

:15:01. > :15:04.the effort to see if they can fracture this race at the start.

:15:05. > :15:08.Emily Nelson has handed over to Elinor Barker, who is at the front

:15:09. > :15:14.of the race with Belgium. Here is the crash involving the Irish pair,

:15:15. > :15:21.both hitting the deck on the changeover. They have to get back in

:15:22. > :15:26.quickly. When one falls down, the others can wait for them to get back

:15:27. > :15:31.in, which is physically difficult. There is the early scenario, one

:15:32. > :15:34.sprint of 12 completed. Great Britain are the early leaders. There

:15:35. > :15:41.is Elinor Barker on the inside of the track. Sitting at the front at

:15:42. > :15:44.the moment. I wouldn't say it was a gift but it was tactically won and

:15:45. > :15:49.they will be pleased with that. It didn't cost them too much

:15:50. > :15:53.physically. The timing of the changeable worked over very well.

:15:54. > :15:58.Elinor Barker looks in great form. An attack coming in from Mexico and

:15:59. > :16:02.that will be Salazar on the attack, the 20-year-old triple national

:16:03. > :16:06.champion for sub Mexico making a move off the front of the field. As

:16:07. > :16:09.I was saying that, Elinor Barker was in great form in the scratch race

:16:10. > :16:17.and so nearly claimed the gold medal.

:16:18. > :16:24.If you to chase every move from the start that I've riders rub their

:16:25. > :16:31.hands enterprising way and sit and let you do all of the chasing --

:16:32. > :16:37.then the other riders will rub their hands enterprising play. Sofia

:16:38. > :16:42.Arreola from Mexico, has gone almost the length of the track... Yes, gaps

:16:43. > :16:48.can come and go so fast in this event and you have to measure your

:16:49. > :16:55.effort. If you have a really hard sprint and others following behind

:16:56. > :17:02.you attack instantly, you can use huge amounts of ground very quickly.

:17:03. > :17:04.A couple of laps away from the next sprint as Arreola we the way for

:17:05. > :17:14.Nick Scott. Great Britain moving forward again as Elinor Barker

:17:15. > :17:18.thrown back into the frame by Emily Nelson. Britain will be in the

:17:19. > :17:22.shake-up here for the points, potentially, as Australia make a

:17:23. > :17:29.change. Elinor Barker right on the wheel there of Alex Manley. She can

:17:30. > :17:35.stick with the wheel and that is what you want in this position. She

:17:36. > :17:41.has not had to cede any width at all, and, sorry, I beg your pardon.

:17:42. > :17:45.Mexico took the points ahead of the others coming through but they are

:17:46. > :17:49.staying out in front, long enough to collect the points. Inside the last

:17:50. > :17:52.hundred laps now. That little flurry has brought them back into the fold.

:17:53. > :18:02.They had half a lap's read and it can disappear so fast. Already, the

:18:03. > :18:05.bunch in two halves here. Mexico back in, still on the front end of

:18:06. > :18:13.the race, but New Zealand or on the front it the moment, with Sheath and

:18:14. > :18:17.Michaela Drummond, Sheath got there at the moment, and Australia are up

:18:18. > :18:21.there with Amy Cure and Emily Nelson for Great Britain, third in line. An

:18:22. > :18:25.idea of the tactics, when a rider comes out and has lost all that

:18:26. > :18:28.speed, the weight of the main race has passed, they can swing up to the

:18:29. > :18:33.top and that is where they have to be really clever and watch what is

:18:34. > :18:37.happening. Gauge how fast or high up the riding and that determines when

:18:38. > :18:42.they will come back in. It is Lydia Gurley from Ireland, showing no ill

:18:43. > :18:46.effects from that early crash both Irish riders suffered in the

:18:47. > :18:49.changeover. Let's look at this changeover, much better, and

:18:50. > :18:53.exclaimed one on the inside of the track, and Lydia Boylan now takes up

:18:54. > :18:58.the running. That happens, if the riders are too far apart when they

:18:59. > :19:02.take hold of each other, people in an arc towards each other. They are

:19:03. > :19:07.very close and if they do that and keep it against their body, all of

:19:08. > :19:11.the energy goes. Boylan on the front followed by Drummond of New Zealand.

:19:12. > :19:14.Belgium are there or thereabouts in the front as well, and Australia,

:19:15. > :19:20.making sure nothing get away from them. They are there, if anybody

:19:21. > :19:26.decides to make a move. In second place at the moment, Australia.

:19:27. > :19:30.Britain in fourth. Haven't put a foot wrong but it is early days in

:19:31. > :19:32.this race. I am watching them tactically, how they position

:19:33. > :19:36.themselves and have held their ground when someone tried to move

:19:37. > :19:39.them out. The British team has held beautifully, coming to the front

:19:40. > :19:46.with three laps to go until the next sprint. Around the outside, the

:19:47. > :19:50.Italians, I think they will make a move, and it is the world junior

:19:51. > :19:58.points race champion having a go for Italy, about to make the change and

:19:59. > :20:02.so Barbieri into the fray. Australia are up there as well, Manly for

:20:03. > :20:06.Australia, a big crash, and Australia with a rider down! Just

:20:07. > :20:11.the same with positioning on the track. We will get the replay... I

:20:12. > :20:15.think it is Manly on the ground but she is OK, has picked herself up

:20:16. > :20:22.straightaway. Australia relying on Amy Cure to do it all on her own, as

:20:23. > :20:25.Belgium make a change. Thrown into the race for Belgium. Took a little

:20:26. > :20:33.too long and the Australians managed to get over the line, and the

:20:34. > :20:41.British team-mate hit a point as well. Amy Cure still having to carry

:20:42. > :20:44.on, her team-mate, Alex Manly, on a spear bike, no back-up and rejoining

:20:45. > :20:49.the race. There is the spread and Great Britain scoring again, two

:20:50. > :20:54.more points, Britain leading with nine overall, one clear of Australia

:20:55. > :20:59.and Belgium are third on six. With written being in wheels for two

:21:00. > :21:03.consecutive sprints, a little early but it would have been the perfect

:21:04. > :21:08.time to counterattack with Australia -- with Britain being in wheels.

:21:09. > :21:14.Let's look at that crash now. She comes down, looking through the

:21:15. > :21:19.traffic. They just get a little crowded... Ah, OK, it was the

:21:20. > :21:23.Belgian wheel comment off. Good change, she was trying to avoid the

:21:24. > :21:28.Belgian rider and just couldn't do it. She doesn't look distressed,

:21:29. > :21:30.just irritated, following off at 50km/h!

:21:31. > :21:35.LAUGHTER Yes, perfectly OK and back in the

:21:36. > :21:40.race, good to see. Great Britain leading with 86 laps still the go in

:21:41. > :21:42.this first ever win in's madison at the Track Cycling World

:21:43. > :21:45.Championships, coming to your life from Hong Kong, Britain riding very

:21:46. > :21:55.well so far, represented by Elinor Barker and Emily Nelson. Cure and

:21:56. > :21:58.Manly have also been riding aggressively and tactically well,

:21:59. > :22:03.coming from behind but catching up quite quickly now. The United States

:22:04. > :22:09.are also moving to the front. Is right there, and leading for the USA

:22:10. > :22:13.at the moment, Kimberly Geist, one of their top performers this week.

:22:14. > :22:20.They have to get a point on the board, the Americans, so that will

:22:21. > :22:26.be OK with the British if they score. They are already starting to

:22:27. > :22:30.position, such is the positioning of this race. Where is my team-mate?

:22:31. > :22:36.How do I get myself positioned near the front? And they know they can

:22:37. > :22:41.throw in a fresh rider just before it starts. A superb event if you are

:22:42. > :22:46.a track rider. Developing your track racing skills. Yes, really you need

:22:47. > :22:51.to understand how the raised floors, because if you are trying to do it,

:22:52. > :23:03.the physiology, you will just get an absolute pasting -- you need to

:23:04. > :23:06.understand how the race flows. Lotte Kopecky leads for Belgium down the

:23:07. > :23:13.back straight. Britain are just tagging on the back of that line at

:23:14. > :23:17.the moment. I would not be surprised to see an attack from the British

:23:18. > :23:23.team because they almost seem to be purposely staying out of the Sprints

:23:24. > :23:27.at the moment. A Belgian change, a clean pair of wheels, maximum points

:23:28. > :23:34.for them, and Australia will take three, two for New Zealand and one

:23:35. > :23:42.for Italy with Brian -- with France and Great Britain right behind.

:23:43. > :23:45.Still all to play for here. We still have not had that big attack from

:23:46. > :23:54.anybody yet. It will come from someone, as New Zealand hold the

:23:55. > :23:59.front of the field. Racquel Sheath in with Michaela Drummond, and

:24:00. > :24:03.handing over the comment now. The predominantly bluetit of Belgian,

:24:04. > :24:13.the Belgian catching her breath there. A minor role in the action --

:24:14. > :24:18.predominantly blue shirt or Belgium. I wonder if those early efforts are

:24:19. > :24:21.catching the British team... I will pass that sentence! The Americans

:24:22. > :24:26.have decided, if you are slowing down we are not and what a surprise

:24:27. > :24:32.attack that was. That took everyone by surprise. The rider from

:24:33. > :24:36.Pennsylvania on attack from the USA, although around outside of the main

:24:37. > :24:44.field. No points on the board yet but that is is irrelevant... A

:24:45. > :24:49.crash, are rider down yet again. The team from the USA pegging away and

:24:50. > :24:52.it is a great move by them. Lydia Gurley on the deck but as you can

:24:53. > :24:58.see she looks all right, good news. That is the second time Lydia has

:24:59. > :25:01.fallen in this race. The Americans just pegging away, will take the

:25:02. > :25:05.next sprint if they carry on like this. No real emphasis behind

:25:06. > :25:09.because they do not have any points but if they take a lap that is 20

:25:10. > :25:11.straightaway of course. As we see the team from Ireland getting

:25:12. > :25:15.themselves back together, they have really been in the wars. Great

:25:16. > :25:24.Britain in the mix as well for points behind the USA. Still four

:25:25. > :25:29.laps to go, USA in the front, just seeing who is coming to... Russia is

:25:30. > :25:34.on the outside of the moment. Hong Kong are up there as well, in behind

:25:35. > :25:38.the Belgians. We already have teams starting to lose laps as well. The

:25:39. > :25:44.Czech Republic, Ukraine... A bit of a surprise actually. The former

:25:45. > :25:50.world champion in the points race, one of the two riders for the Czech

:25:51. > :25:54.republic, normally a prominent performer at the World

:25:55. > :25:57.Championships. Her next sprint hotting up, already buying for

:25:58. > :26:03.position. The Italians coming over the top. British getting involved

:26:04. > :26:06.this time. It is Rachele Barbieri from Italy lodging from a long way

:26:07. > :26:10.out. France trying to get involved as well. A lovely little moved by

:26:11. > :26:15.the Belgians down the inside to avoid any trouble. She throws Lotte

:26:16. > :26:20.Kopecky back into the action. Italy leading Belgium, France in the

:26:21. > :26:23.place, Great Britain Forth, coming right now, Great Britain, hoping to

:26:24. > :26:28.get points here, as the French make a change in the middle of the

:26:29. > :26:31.Sprint. I think Britain may score a point, one point for Britain scored

:26:32. > :26:36.by Emily Nelson. She took a real risk going underneath of the

:26:37. > :26:40.changing teams, and it paid off but, boy, a risky thing to do because

:26:41. > :26:45.that is where the bodies are that are losing energy and speed and you

:26:46. > :26:53.could suddenly find yourself with no breaks behind someone who is tenkm/h

:26:54. > :27:01.slaw. But it paid off. -- ten kilometres per hour slower. Riders

:27:02. > :27:06.all over the track. Which is what we would expect any madison race.

:27:07. > :27:12.Australia on the front of the race with Manly, followed by Italy, and

:27:13. > :27:17.at the moment the rider in the race is Barbieri. Britain are up there as

:27:18. > :27:21.well, Britain, Belgium, Poland and Russia at the front. Mexico now

:27:22. > :27:28.making a move on the inside. Up into about fourth place, but Paul leads

:27:29. > :27:36.away. She is really turning on the pressure year -- Poland lead the

:27:37. > :27:44.way. Too far out from the Sprint at the moment. We can see a good

:27:45. > :27:47.demonstration of a hand sling there, you have to keep the forearm really

:27:48. > :27:51.tucked into the body to make sure all the energy is going forwards and

:27:52. > :28:00.backwards and not sideways. So easy to drag you team-mate round in a

:28:01. > :28:05.half circle. A red flag for Ukraine. Ukraine being penalised by the

:28:06. > :28:09.officials. That might be in working with one of the other teams because

:28:10. > :28:14.they are actually two laps down at the moment. If you drop into a

:28:15. > :28:22.breakaway, you will be penalised for that. Meanwhile at the front, New

:28:23. > :28:26.Zealand, Australia, Italy, Belgium, and Hong Kong as well trying to get

:28:27. > :28:31.involved to see if they can snap up some points next time. Three laps to

:28:32. > :28:36.go until the next sprint, the next time over the line. Australia are

:28:37. > :28:40.very consistent so far. The Belgians as well, looking good, leading at

:28:41. > :28:45.the moment. Great Britain just slipping down now, four points

:28:46. > :28:52.adrift, but less than the point available to get back on terms. I am

:28:53. > :28:56.sure we will see some serious attempts. Still more than 60 laps to

:28:57. > :29:01.go and they are coming fast around the outside now. This is the one the

:29:02. > :29:04.British will want to go for. Lotte Kopecky, and Great Britain getting

:29:05. > :29:06.involved around the British will want to go for. Lotte Kopecky, and

:29:07. > :29:09.Great Britain getting involved around outside... Lovely ride here

:29:10. > :29:14.on the front of the race and once more it is Elinor Barker, and Barker

:29:15. > :29:22.absolutely flying down the back straight now! But she is being

:29:23. > :29:28.chased by such a fast rider -- and she goes as they come up to the

:29:29. > :29:36.line, Emily Barker with three points and she then throws Nelson into the

:29:37. > :29:39.race. -- Elinor Barker. I wondered if they would stick with that but

:29:40. > :29:44.you have to decide instantly whether you will do that because the gap is

:29:45. > :29:48.gone, because everybody else spot the danger as well. The points move

:29:49. > :29:56.Great Britain into second place in overall standings. Courtesy of three

:29:57. > :29:59.points in the sprint of 12 year in this women's World Championship

:30:00. > :30:03.madison. But they were hard-fought for because she did not get to throw

:30:04. > :30:07.in her team-mate at the ideal time so had to go a long way over that

:30:08. > :30:09.lap and a half to take those points, so she will need a little time to

:30:10. > :30:18.recover. Gillian Doerr, if that name rings a

:30:19. > :30:32.bell, it will be from the Olympic Games last summer -- Jolien d'Hoore.

:30:33. > :30:39.Ukraine will take the said, we have the Czech Republic, Belarus and

:30:40. > :30:43.Canada, into the last 56 laps and we have seen nothing but action so far.

:30:44. > :30:49.The United States trying to get back on terms, which is surprising. I am

:30:50. > :30:53.not sure what happened, got caught up in a bit of traffic. The team

:30:54. > :30:58.from Ireland a game just plugging away, a tough old race, still

:30:59. > :31:03.getting stuck in as they pause at the front again. It has certainly

:31:04. > :31:07.been a physical race for Lydia Boylan and Lydia Gurley, on the deck

:31:08. > :31:11.twice, but still battling away. On the front for New Zealand, Makela

:31:12. > :31:16.Drummond, who won the team pursuit ROMs pedal earlier in the week with

:31:17. > :31:21.her team-mates, the Oceania scratch race champion our 2017 and she has

:31:22. > :31:28.Jolien d'Hoore right on her wheel. I think I can feel an attack building

:31:29. > :31:33.now, people are getting tired and that is when the gaps appear and the

:31:34. > :31:37.courageous few choose to take that opportunity. If something goes at

:31:38. > :31:44.the moment, Chris, Great Britain are in a decent position to try and do

:31:45. > :31:48.something about it. It is almost certain to be capitalised by a

:31:49. > :31:53.sprint lap, gaps appearing after the -- the line. Three to go as they

:31:54. > :31:57.come around this time. Amy Cure just winding it up for Australia, a

:31:58. > :32:00.couple of laps to go to the next sprint. Elinor Barker right on her

:32:01. > :32:06.wheel. Jolien D'Hoore following Barca and Italy are next in line.

:32:07. > :32:10.Barker is beautifully placed to have a nice changeover in Harper lap's

:32:11. > :32:15.time. She might get caught in traffic but the changeover will be

:32:16. > :32:20.perfect. Did well to avoid a potential problem as Kopecky takes

:32:21. > :32:23.it up for Belgium and going around for Great Britain still is Elinor

:32:24. > :32:29.Barker as she throws Emily Nelson into it. Fresh legs for the sprint.

:32:30. > :32:35.Here comes Emily Nelson. Can she find a way past? I think she can,

:32:36. > :32:39.great stuff from Emily Nelson. That will be a photo finish but you can

:32:40. > :32:44.see the difference, even thrown in with Harper lap to go, that fresh

:32:45. > :32:49.legs make. Fresh being a relative term. That is a great sprinter for

:32:50. > :32:56.three points. Consistently getting involved there. Still out in front.

:32:57. > :33:00.Still out in front at the moment, Great Britain, and Australia realise

:33:01. > :33:03.they cannot allow that to happen. Neither can Belgium or Italy,

:33:04. > :33:07.suddenly gasping for air, their collective tank a little bit empty

:33:08. > :33:11.with Britain at the front with Nelson. You realise you have got to

:33:12. > :33:16.you put your foot down and there is nothing left. You can see, teams

:33:17. > :33:20.everywhere, how they managed to cope with this, I just don't know. There

:33:21. > :33:31.was nearly a crash there, they did well to stay up, the Russians.

:33:32. > :33:34.Improves your handling skills, being involved in traffic like that and

:33:35. > :33:40.staying upright. Three of the strongest teams together, something

:33:41. > :33:44.in it for all of them to work together. New Zealand desperately

:33:45. > :33:48.trying to get back on terms. Chris is talking about Australia, Belgium

:33:49. > :33:53.and Great Britain. Kopecky for Belgium, with Alan Barker on her

:33:54. > :33:57.wheel. Barker looking to add to that silver medal won on the opening day

:33:58. > :34:03.and these three teams look to be the ones to beat. Belgium lead overall

:34:04. > :34:09.as Kopecky rides around the outside to stay out of the way. Belgium on

:34:10. > :34:12.21 points. If you are not participating in that breakaway, she

:34:13. > :34:16.is sitting on the wheel, so that is the death of it, so they won't keep

:34:17. > :34:21.going unless they are all contributing, they will not do the

:34:22. > :34:24.work for another team and that is enough... France on the move,

:34:25. > :34:31.leading the way for them is Laurie Berthon. They are all the strongest

:34:32. > :34:35.teams that have just been on the road and who is left to chase? A

:34:36. > :34:40.quarter of a lap. Laurie Berthon won the silver medal in the omnium in

:34:41. > :34:43.London last year at the World Championships and as you can see,

:34:44. > :34:51.she has a bit of a gap and it is Australia's term to do some work --

:34:52. > :34:56.Australia's turn. First on the track at the moment, two laps to go Tillis

:34:57. > :35:04.friend, are France, followed by Australia, Belgium, Great Britain,

:35:05. > :35:07.Mexico, Italy and Russia. Amy Cure was bluffing, she suddenly has the

:35:08. > :35:10.legs to do the chasing. The other riders not far behind as they come

:35:11. > :35:16.around for the sprint and I think they may have shown their hand too

:35:17. > :35:20.early. Amy Cure now going for it then the outside and Laurie Berthon

:35:21. > :35:23.hasn't got anything left. New Zealand in second. Great Britain

:35:24. > :35:28.with every chance of scoring a point as they come towards the line.

:35:29. > :35:33.Britain settled through one -- 41 through Elinor Barker. Perfect time

:35:34. > :35:36.to counter if you have the legs left, everyone has been on the gas.

:35:37. > :35:42.The British have certainly done no more than everybody else. The

:35:43. > :35:46.Belgians are doing everything you suggested, carrying the move on,

:35:47. > :35:50.pushing forward. Kopecky. The others were gasping for air and hoping for

:35:51. > :35:54.a short break and that that is not the case, Belgium are putting the

:35:55. > :35:58.pressure on. The team from Australia have done a chase, they have done a

:35:59. > :36:03.sprint, they must be moving into the red, they are exposing themselves to

:36:04. > :36:06.a counterattack. Again, they have done the chasing but they know when

:36:07. > :36:10.you are in that kind of condition, that is when it falls apart and so

:36:11. > :36:14.courageous, they have gone on the attack. Amy Cure leads the way,

:36:15. > :36:19.followed by New Zealand, followed by Great Britain. A little bit of a gap

:36:20. > :36:26.back to Belgium as they prepare to make a change. Amy Nelson -- Emily

:36:27. > :36:29.Nelson racing. Speaking at the British have stayed in touch with

:36:30. > :36:32.every move that has gone but done the minimum amount of work,

:36:33. > :36:36.following, following, following and keeping themselves in a great

:36:37. > :36:42.position to either a tackle keep going for points. 36 laps remaining.

:36:43. > :36:45.Great Britain in silver medal position at the moment in this

:36:46. > :36:52.first-ever madison at the World Championships for women. Just four

:36:53. > :36:56.teams at the moment as France again try and get back on terms. Belgium,

:36:57. > :37:01.Australia, New Zealand and Great Britain at the front, joined by

:37:02. > :37:07.France and the riders close the gap, Coralie Demay for the French. One of

:37:08. > :37:11.the riders from the Russian team with the res camera. That is what it

:37:12. > :37:22.looks like in the middle of a crash. Crash cam. In the front of the race,

:37:23. > :37:25.New Zealand, Australia, Britain and Belgium, just a minor law at the

:37:26. > :37:32.moment in relative terms. Ridden in second place. Just over a kilometre

:37:33. > :37:38.remaining until the next sprint. They will start trying to position

:37:39. > :37:45.things now. It may seem a long way out. Three laps to go, the board has

:37:46. > :37:50.just changeover. Cure, Barker, Kopecky involved, Racquel Sheath as

:37:51. > :37:53.well. A little bit of a gap as well. Elinor Barker. Speaking are moving

:37:54. > :37:58.to the front, ready for the change. Just looking for her team-mate and I

:37:59. > :38:03.think this is going to work out pretty well. Nelson is down the far

:38:04. > :38:07.end of the back straight, very high on the banking, starting to wind it

:38:08. > :38:13.up, waiting for Elinor Barker. Here she comes, the changes coming as

:38:14. > :38:17.they take the bell. Both of them making a change at the same time,

:38:18. > :38:20.there is a big crash and Australia with a rider down. Great Britain are

:38:21. > :38:25.clear at the front with every chance of collecting five points. It was so

:38:26. > :38:28.tight, there was no room be on the finishing line as they try to change

:38:29. > :38:34.at the same time and Great Britain take maximum points. Not only five

:38:35. > :38:38.points, they have a really big gap because of that crash. They weren't

:38:39. > :38:46.the cause of it and suddenly the races spread all over the track.

:38:47. > :38:49.This is it, they have an opportunity, will they persist?

:38:50. > :38:55.Elinor Barker through Emily Nelson into the fray and Amy Cure colliding

:38:56. > :38:58.with her team-mate. Speaker not the British team's appalled at all, they

:38:59. > :39:02.were trying to do things to close and didn't leave enough room to

:39:03. > :39:08.race. Frankly, it was their own fault. Manly hitting the boards for

:39:09. > :39:12.the second time in this race. Here it is once again. While we are

:39:13. > :39:15.watching the replay is, the Australian team are now half a lap

:39:16. > :39:21.in arrears and they have been working hard and have got to get

:39:22. > :39:25.back on terms here. Chris, surely this is the opportunity for Belgium,

:39:26. > :39:30.New Zealand and Great Britain? They just have to keep pressing on now

:39:31. > :39:33.with this advantage over Australia? Absolutely and only three points

:39:34. > :39:40.separate Belgium and Great Britain at the moment. This is great stuff,

:39:41. > :39:45.only 26 laps to go in this madison and what an epic race it is turning

:39:46. > :39:49.into. It has become a real slog. If you look at any of the groups now,

:39:50. > :39:52.they are just trying to get to the finish, everybody is in pain and

:39:53. > :39:56.when the opportunity like this comes along, you have to take it, whether

:39:57. > :39:58.you are prepared for it or not. Everybody has been working hard for

:39:59. > :40:11.three or four minutes. The Italians are quite a way back

:40:12. > :40:13.now with 11 points. Dairies Jolien D'Hoore, the superb road sprinter as

:40:14. > :40:20.well as an excellent track rider. Just sits back and swoops down and

:40:21. > :40:25.to the trio at the front of the race. That is Emily Nelson at the

:40:26. > :40:30.front for Great Britain and for New Zealand, Makela Drummond. New

:40:31. > :40:33.Zealand have to work hard, they only have eight points on the board and

:40:34. > :40:37.they have to make up some ground to get onto the podium. It is in their

:40:38. > :40:43.interests to really drive this breakaway. Behind them, it is

:40:44. > :40:47.getting a consolidated chase, quite a large group and they are being

:40:48. > :40:52.pegged at half a lap, so it will be a tough thing to gain a lap.

:40:53. > :40:56.Particularly with two laps to go until a sprint, the pace is picking

:40:57. > :41:01.up. The USA causing the problem at the back from the leader's point of

:41:02. > :41:05.view by pressing on. At the front of the race, you can see them going

:41:06. > :41:09.into the back straight. Britain and Belgium changing at the same time so

:41:10. > :41:12.neither will have an advantage in this sprint but the ones on the

:41:13. > :41:17.board at the moment are the ones that will have do contest it. They

:41:18. > :41:20.take the bell, Elinor Barker on the wheel of Kopecky. There is a new

:41:21. > :41:26.rider in for New Zealand, the sprint is on down the back straight. The

:41:27. > :41:30.Belgians knew exactly what they had to do. Barker tries to go on the

:41:31. > :41:36.inside and almost ends up on the deck, she did well to keep the bike

:41:37. > :41:43.upright. There will be a warning, she went up the track, there was a

:41:44. > :41:48.sizeable gap. She wasn't on the red line and came down on her opponent,

:41:49. > :41:55.so Belgium will be penalised. Barker wasn't happy at all. There you go,

:41:56. > :41:59.right inside the red line, very dangerous, they could even be

:42:00. > :42:08.disqualified. Reckless riding from Belgium. We will wait for the judges

:42:09. > :42:11.to makes an kind of pronouncement. You can see the gesticulation from

:42:12. > :42:17.Elinor Barker. Man that no wonder. She did well, actually, to stay

:42:18. > :42:22.upright. Once you go onto the flat and this banking is tuned to be

:42:23. > :42:26.perpendicular at 30 mph, suddenly your wheels sliding away and you

:42:27. > :42:31.can't freewheel, so there is even the possibility of touching the

:42:32. > :42:37.pedal down. Great work by Elinor Barker to keep the bike up and keep

:42:38. > :42:40.in the race. At the back, closing the gap rapidly, that really took

:42:41. > :42:46.the impetus out of the breakaway and they are not going to gain that lap.

:42:47. > :42:49.Australia back in the game, leading the chase with the United States and

:42:50. > :42:56.Italy and Russia and that gap closing with every revolution of the

:42:57. > :43:02.pedals. That is it, it is all back together, that is how fast the race

:43:03. > :43:07.can change in a madison. As it stands, Belgium lead the way, Great

:43:08. > :43:12.Britain in a silver medal position. We will have to wait and see because

:43:13. > :43:16.that was a very dangerous move and I am sure it will have repercussions

:43:17. > :43:22.but it is all back together, with 14 laps as they come around this time

:43:23. > :43:25.into the closing stages, just one more sprint before that double

:43:26. > :43:30.points finale, and we have to remember that, ten points on the

:43:31. > :43:34.last sprint. All still to play for in the women's madison as we come to

:43:35. > :43:42.the final laps of this race, this 120 lap race. I have got half an eye

:43:43. > :43:52.on the judges and there is a little discussion taking place right now.

:43:53. > :43:56.Italy give way on the front of the main field. Kopecky was the rider

:43:57. > :44:00.involved in that incident, she is back on the track and alongside

:44:01. > :44:07.Elinor Barker. Speaker trying to get her nose in front as they come

:44:08. > :44:11.around with two laps to go. Change for the Italians, being thrown into

:44:12. > :44:16.the races Barbieri. And Amy Cure looks like she is attacking around

:44:17. > :44:18.the outside. Interestingly, the Belgians trying to interfere with

:44:19. > :44:26.the British change by moving up the track early. So some pretty dirty

:44:27. > :44:30.tactics going on. Elinor Barker Forster chase. Barbieri is looking

:44:31. > :44:34.really fast as she goes past Amy Cure. Jolien D'Hoore might be even

:44:35. > :44:37.quicker than the pair of them. She is around the outside, Jolien

:44:38. > :44:43.D'Hoore takes it on the line and Australia have to settle for two. I

:44:44. > :44:48.think the only opportunity for a golfer Great Britain is to go on the

:44:49. > :44:52.attack in these last ten laps. They have been denied tactically. The

:44:53. > :44:57.chance could be there now. That is exactly what they are trying to do.

:44:58. > :45:03.It is testing the water but it is getting late for that, it is late in

:45:04. > :45:06.the day. Ten points in this last sprint, but there is a 9-point

:45:07. > :45:11.difference between Belgium and Great Britain. They need more, surely,

:45:12. > :45:16.than to win the sprint, because both are likely to score. A lot of tired

:45:17. > :45:20.riders on the track now, they have given it everything and they need to

:45:21. > :45:25.muster their reserves for one final sprint.

:45:26. > :45:33.Belgium leading the way, then Great Britain, Australia and Italy. Seven

:45:34. > :45:38.laps remaining in this race, and they are already starting to think

:45:39. > :45:42.about this final spread, so valuable, and which will affect the

:45:43. > :45:53.podium places. -- final sprint. Remember they are on the same points

:45:54. > :45:58.at the finish, if that is the case. Probably safer to be out on Uronen,

:45:59. > :46:06.I think. Lydia Boylan leading the way, Amy Cure behind. -- out on your

:46:07. > :46:10.own. Australia desperately want to see if they can overhaul Great

:46:11. > :46:16.Britain, in the bronze medal position at the moment. They want

:46:17. > :46:21.that opportunity. Five laps remaining. Britain going for it...

:46:22. > :46:24.Emily Nelson on the attack you and Belgium have responded straightaway,

:46:25. > :46:29.but Nelson going for it and Australia will have to chase here,

:46:30. > :46:32.the closing laps, four to go. The Belgians will change first, making

:46:33. > :46:36.all the difference to be able to close this one down quickly. Timing

:46:37. > :46:46.is absolutely everything. They will lose a few meters in the chase but

:46:47. > :46:53.the fresh legs will not under the wheels. Disappointing timing for the

:46:54. > :46:59.British pair but it looks good between the pair of them. It will be

:47:00. > :47:03.tough if it is Elinor Barker against Jolien D'Hoore, because she is such

:47:04. > :47:08.a fast finisher, D'Hoore. D'Hoore is sitting on the wheels, knows that

:47:09. > :47:11.she doesn't have to win but just stay there. Australia are

:47:12. > :47:20.desperately trying to get back on terms but here comes the bell... She

:47:21. > :47:24.works hard, back in place, Amy Cure. A little gap opens. What does Barker

:47:25. > :47:30.have left? Australia around outside, and it is Amy Cure moving up now,

:47:31. > :47:37.level with the Mexican rider. Can she get third? Barker has the hang

:47:38. > :47:41.end, Barker takes second place, but Belgium hung on in that final spread

:47:42. > :47:47.ahead of Great Britain. Elinor Barker could not have done any more

:47:48. > :47:50.in that final sprint, could not beat Jolien D'Hoore, but Elinor Barker

:47:51. > :47:55.and Emily Nelson have ridden so well in this first ever women's madison

:47:56. > :48:00.at the World Championships. Great Britain will finish with a medal and

:48:01. > :48:04.it will be silver. A nervous looking Belgian there because I am sure he

:48:05. > :48:12.also thinks this might not be over. We will have to wait and see. That

:48:13. > :48:18.one move, waiting to see if it has consequences because it was blatant.

:48:19. > :48:22.Absolutely deliberate, and the judges... They are speaking now,

:48:23. > :48:24.Chris, the judges, and I wonder whether it is to do with that

:48:25. > :48:29.incident. Whether they are happy with everything as it is. Certainly

:48:30. > :48:33.there has been no indication they were about to penalised Belgium

:48:34. > :48:40.during the race. A couple of rather dodgy moves and you can see the

:48:41. > :48:44.Belgians just moved into the pack, the British change, just getting in

:48:45. > :48:48.the way of other people's racing. They are classy riders but clearly

:48:49. > :48:52.knew every trick in the book as well. What about that ride from the

:48:53. > :48:57.British pair? I don't think they could have done much more. From the

:48:58. > :49:01.word go, the first to score, on top of everything, did not make any

:49:02. > :49:05.tactical mistakes, and technically managing to stay up, at times,

:49:06. > :49:11.absolutely brilliant. Those are the result as it stands of the final

:49:12. > :49:15.sprint, won by Belgium, head of Great Britain, Australia and New

:49:16. > :49:19.Zealand. And the provisional leaderboard should come up any

:49:20. > :49:31.minute now as the Belgian pair, Lotte Kopecky and Uihlein Dora

:49:32. > :49:36.celebrate -- Kopecky and D'Hoore. There you are, make it a straight

:49:37. > :49:41.line, push all of your energy into your opponent and, boy, that takes

:49:42. > :49:44.some doing at these speedss. I think what will happen is they will get a

:49:45. > :49:48.warning and the points from that sprint taken away but because they

:49:49. > :49:52.have scored so well elsewhere they will still get the win. They

:49:53. > :49:57.certainly are top-class performers and we knew they were one of the big

:49:58. > :50:00.favourites for the gold medal coming into it but, interestingly,

:50:01. > :50:05.different pairing for Great Britain than the one we saw in Glasgow,

:50:06. > :50:09.Katie Archibald and Manon Lloyd that day, so plenty of talent and choices

:50:10. > :50:14.within the British team in this discipline. Surely this will go back

:50:15. > :50:17.to the Olympic Games because it is just a fantastic day to go. For me I

:50:18. > :50:23.think you get the most for your money with the madison. There we

:50:24. > :50:26.are, the first women's madison at the World Championship has drawn to

:50:27. > :50:30.a close, and what a race it was. Great Britain involved right to the

:50:31. > :50:35.last. STUDIO: That was simply fantastic to

:50:36. > :50:39.watch. Simon explaining that even if Belgium get their points taken away

:50:40. > :50:43.from the tenth sprint where they clashed with Britain they still have

:50:44. > :50:47.enough in hand to maintain that gold medal position. Let's look at the

:50:48. > :50:52.first incident. This involved the Australians who eventually took the

:50:53. > :50:56.bronze medal, Amy Cure and Alex Manly, so many crashes but we cannot

:50:57. > :51:00.show them all, but this one was significant, and so difficult to get

:51:01. > :51:04.your timing right in the changeover. Yes, it is good to have a fresh

:51:05. > :51:09.rider coming in for the sprint but that is also when you're travelling

:51:10. > :51:13.the fastest, making it all the more challenging. It could have been a

:51:14. > :51:17.brilliant move but that did not end well for them. The Australians were

:51:18. > :51:23.down twice actually. Watching the cycling this afternoon, you have to

:51:24. > :51:27.see how phenomenally tough and brave these cyclists are. One more angle

:51:28. > :51:30.of that Australian crash, and let's hear from Elinor Barker and Emily

:51:31. > :51:36.Nelson after their silver medal in the women's madison.

:51:37. > :51:41.Congratulations, both, on that silver medal. You battled hard and

:51:42. > :51:44.really took a big risk there to try to get that gold medal and push the

:51:45. > :51:48.Belgians but they were so strong. It very well done today. How did you

:51:49. > :51:53.enjoy it? Really enjoyed it actually. Was pretty nervous

:51:54. > :51:56.performing because we had both only had one madison before, each, so we

:51:57. > :51:59.didn't know what to expect. You get a general idea of how the scratch

:52:00. > :52:04.race will go based on the field but between us we have not graced the

:52:05. > :52:07.whole field in this event, so really fun, actually. Not surprised at all

:52:08. > :52:12.by the Belgians being a class above everyone else because it is kind of

:52:13. > :52:18.bread into them, a madison nation, or that kind of stuff. Very

:52:19. > :52:22.impressive there. Yes, but you were as well. He very nearly came to

:52:23. > :52:25.grief with one of the Belgian riders coming down. What was going through

:52:26. > :52:30.your mind at that point? We had seen one or two max spills. Get out of my

:52:31. > :52:36.way! She was faster than me and I was trying to get second. I thought

:52:37. > :52:39.it was a bit of an unnecessary danger because I was not going to

:52:40. > :52:44.beat her and no one was changing at the time, so it just... I really

:52:45. > :52:51.quite enjoyed it overall even though not at that specific moment. Are you

:52:52. > :52:55.able to community, to shout, at that point? I was definitely shouting. I

:52:56. > :52:59.don't know if you heard what I was saying. -- are you able to

:53:00. > :53:05.communicate. I think it worked out all right. Yes, I think it is so

:53:06. > :53:08.hard because you get three or four seconds, so you showed one or two

:53:09. > :53:13.Matt words and hope they understand, but it worked out for us surreally

:53:14. > :53:17.happy. To be up there on the podium, the first time this women's madison

:53:18. > :53:22.in the championships. What a huge thrill for you as well? Definitely.

:53:23. > :53:27.Such an exciting race and I can't wait for more. The commission meets

:53:28. > :53:29.in July to see if it could become part of the Olympic programme. Do

:53:30. > :53:33.you think you made an argument for it today with that type of race? I

:53:34. > :53:37.definitely think it should be. How exciting is it to watch the women's

:53:38. > :53:45.madison? It definitely should be there. Final word to you, Elinor.

:53:46. > :53:50.Would you like to see back at the Olympics? Definitely. You only think

:53:51. > :53:54.of the race last year, the best event of the whole week and

:53:55. > :53:58.everybody loved it, so sometimes it is hard to keep track of what is

:53:59. > :54:00.going on, Abbot of a messy race, but that makes it interesting. For

:54:01. > :54:08.spectators it will only raise the profile. -- it can be a bit of a

:54:09. > :54:19.messy race. Well done on that medal. You'd definitely sold it today.

:54:20. > :54:23.Confirmation Belgium have won the gold medal, 45 points, ahead of

:54:24. > :54:27.Great Britain on 33, and Australia taking the bronze despite two

:54:28. > :54:30.crashes. Chris and Jo, do you think they should award extra points for

:54:31. > :54:38.teams who can stay on their bikes? Incredible! Yes, great for Britain

:54:39. > :54:43.to get another clause, onwards and upwards. In terms of your own mental

:54:44. > :54:46.state as rider, how difficult to keep across everything happening? It

:54:47. > :54:50.requires really intense concentration so you are trying

:54:51. > :54:53.physically very hard but you also have to concentrate on where your

:54:54. > :54:57.team-mate is when they are resting, and when you are resting, when your

:54:58. > :55:01.team is in the race, on the other teams, how they are doing, their

:55:02. > :55:05.point, a lot of concentration. Over the moon for the girls, a brilliant

:55:06. > :55:15.ride. More action, coming thick and fast. If you ever get a chance to go

:55:16. > :55:18.to cycling to watch the madison live is one of the best things ever

:55:19. > :55:20.because you can see more there than you can with the TV pictures. The

:55:21. > :55:23.sprinting is drilling as well for completely different reasons and

:55:24. > :55:33.here we go with the men's sprint semifinals. Back to Chris and Simon.

:55:34. > :55:35.There is a man who has to win this otherwise his chance of being world

:55:36. > :55:40.champion in this will have gone for another year. Denis Dmitriev, the

:55:41. > :55:48.Russian rider, going from what was on the first race, he looks pretty

:55:49. > :55:51.much unbeatable? Yes, Mitchell, I mean, reading his mind now,

:55:52. > :55:58.obviously thinking, I have got nothing. Any ideas? Because Dmitriev

:55:59. > :56:02.was quite incredible. Yes, Dmitriev, if you are joining the coverage

:56:03. > :56:07.late, he was dominant from start to finish in the sprint. It just was

:56:08. > :56:12.not competitive in the end despite the fact that Mitchell is superb in

:56:13. > :56:17.his own right. But he has to try and win this time. Has to try to find a

:56:18. > :56:20.way past the Russian rider. Dmitriev with a great chance of becoming the

:56:21. > :56:24.world champion this year for the first time. He has been around for a

:56:25. > :56:29.long time, consistently high level performer and on the podium but

:56:30. > :56:32.never quite making it onto the top step at World Championship level. He

:56:33. > :56:36.finished with a bronze in Rio in the sprint in the Olympic Games with of

:56:37. > :56:43.course Jason Kenny claiming the gold ahead of Callum Skinner. With form

:56:44. > :56:49.like this, if it is not his year I don't think you will ever get it. He

:56:50. > :56:53.did a 10.0 without going absolutely full gas in that sprint, and is

:56:54. > :56:58.taking it on in this one, choosing to go from the front, moving all

:56:59. > :57:04.over the track. One and a half laps to go now. They really are moving

:57:05. > :57:07.pretty swiftly. That is the bell. This echo-mac is on and Mitchell has

:57:08. > :57:13.defined some extra speed. It just was not there in the first race. --

:57:14. > :57:18.the sprint is on. Into the banking for the last time into the finishing

:57:19. > :57:22.straight... Can Mitchell challenge? No is the answer. A very

:57:23. > :57:30.straightforward 2-0 victory for Denis Dmitriev from Russia. Of

:57:31. > :57:36.course he doesn't have to have that third bike now so he will save his

:57:37. > :57:42.legs a little for the final itself. Mitchell had already given in there

:57:43. > :57:48.and Dmitriev did not even go full gas, saving some for the final bend.

:57:49. > :57:52.You could see him with half an eye over his shoulder, waiting to

:57:53. > :57:56.deliver the last kick to make sure Mitchell didn't have any ideas about

:57:57. > :58:01.coming round the outside. Just look here... Keeping his eye on

:58:02. > :58:06.proceedings in front, moving around the bank, and you can see him in the

:58:07. > :58:14.corner of his eye, knows that he is there, Halstenberg, and kicked again

:58:15. > :58:18.into the home straight. 10.1, nice controlled straight -- he holds him

:58:19. > :58:23.there and then kicks again into the home straight. Denis Dmitriev,

:58:24. > :58:27.guaranteed a silver medal now. Hoping he can be the world champion

:58:28. > :58:32.for the first time. Ryan Owens is next on the track from Great Britain

:58:33. > :58:35.against Harrie Lavreysen from the Netherlands. Owens, having been

:58:36. > :58:41.beaten in the first race, has to win this one to take it to a decider.

:58:42. > :58:45.Beating by an experienced and tactical error, not physiology, so

:58:46. > :58:48.he really still has an opportunity here. I think if he can get himself

:58:49. > :58:52.into second position he may do better because he concedes what he

:58:53. > :58:56.needs to do and he has that tenacity we have seen in the early stages of

:58:57. > :59:02.this competition. Leading it off at the moment, but he was blocked into

:59:03. > :59:09.reading out in the previous round and I am sure he is very experienced

:59:10. > :59:12.sprint coach will have had a talk with them and I will be very

:59:13. > :59:16.surprised if we see him make the same mistake twice. Nonetheless, he

:59:17. > :59:24.has done very well to reach the last four in this competition. He has

:59:25. > :59:28.surprised a few, hasn't he? Well exceeding expectations at the

:59:29. > :59:33.moment. It is all about learning. Everything is a bonus from this

:59:34. > :59:40.point forward. But within sight of a medal now. So I am sure he will want

:59:41. > :59:43.to project as far as he possibly can, but he has to win this one, as

:59:44. > :59:53.they start to gather speed and height. Watching the Dutchman...

:59:54. > :00:01.Leaving it late here, inside the last two laps. Still going slow.

:00:02. > :00:05.There is the view as Owens looks back towards his Dutch opponent.

:00:06. > :00:11.Switching, flicking, preparing. Lots of it is there. Inside, as they take

:00:12. > :00:15.about... Still high on the track as the Dutch rider tries to go round

:00:16. > :00:20.the outside of Ryan Owens and it looks like he has the speed for it.

:00:21. > :00:24.Lavreysen will into combat, but Lavreysen is in front of the British

:00:25. > :00:29.rider and try as he might Lavreysen cannot quite get back on level terms

:00:30. > :00:33.before the finishing line, and in straight fors, the 20-year-old from

:00:34. > :00:38.the Netherlands, Harrie Lavreysen, is the against Ryan Owens from Great

:00:39. > :00:42.Britain. Ryan Owens will race Ethan Mitchell of New Zealand for the

:00:43. > :00:46.bronze and it will be Denis Dmitriev of Russia against Harrie Lavreysen,

:00:47. > :00:47.and new name on the world scene, the Netherlands. He can be pleased with

:00:48. > :00:58.that actually. Thought Owens had got enough not to

:00:59. > :01:04.get a boob or to just stay underneath him but on the back

:01:05. > :01:08.straight, Lavereysen had too much a head start in accelerating. Just

:01:09. > :01:14.enough to get into the final bend and drop-down. So he gave it his

:01:15. > :01:17.best but beaten both times and Ryan Owens now will race for bronze

:01:18. > :01:23.against Ethan Mitchell in the men's match sprint.

:01:24. > :01:29.CLARE BALDING: Chris Hoyt watching on come he didn't do much wrong, did

:01:30. > :01:33.he? No, it was a valiant effort, trying to keep the Dutchman as close

:01:34. > :01:38.as it could, not create a gap and he did well in that respect. You can

:01:39. > :01:42.see he kept his hide, I felt the Dutchman would try and take him up

:01:43. > :01:47.the inside and he just got the jump on him and that momentum carried him

:01:48. > :01:53.over the top and basically, would ensure a full bike length in front,

:01:54. > :01:57.as he is, that is game over. But it was a great evidently still has the

:01:58. > :02:00.chance to get the bronze medal. And a really good chance because Ethan

:02:01. > :02:05.Mitchell looked totally dejected, he never got close to Dmitriev.

:02:06. > :02:09.Dmitriev is so strong, some of the times he is producing from the

:02:10. > :02:12.bottom of the track, it will be tougher Lavereysen, but anything

:02:13. > :02:16.could happen. He has clearly got a huge morale boost from making the

:02:17. > :02:20.final, I don't think the Dutch were expecting him to make it that far

:02:21. > :02:24.but Ryan, regardless of what happens in the bronze ride off, he done very

:02:25. > :02:29.well to do this and what to watch the future. Yes, his first World

:02:30. > :02:33.Championships so a very exciting prospect and a bronze medal still in

:02:34. > :02:39.his grasp. Not to recover before that best of three matches -- not

:02:40. > :02:43.long. And reflections on a madison, in which Great Britain won the

:02:44. > :02:46.silver medal, and you get the sense that more they get practices, the

:02:47. > :02:54.better they will be, all of the teams. Definitely, like El said in

:02:55. > :02:58.her interview, Belgium, madison is in their blood. There is a huge

:02:59. > :03:02.history. In the UK, we do do a bit of it and as a youth rider, I was

:03:03. > :03:06.taught madison riding but we haven't had so much racing in the UK so the

:03:07. > :03:10.more the event carries on, the better GB will get but the better

:03:11. > :03:14.the rest of the field will get. You have to be smart, there is quite a

:03:15. > :03:18.lot of physicality and you could see from the Belgians, if they could

:03:19. > :03:27.intimidate, they did. Yes, that was a big hit that Helen or took -- that

:03:28. > :03:31.Elinor took an hour she said in her interview, she didn't need to do it,

:03:32. > :03:34.she would beat her anyway, maybe it is trying to intimidate opponents

:03:35. > :03:39.that they look very composed on the bike and very quick. This is where

:03:40. > :03:43.the bike handling skills are so crucial, not just about awareness

:03:44. > :03:47.and stamina and durability to actually race, it is about bike

:03:48. > :03:53.handling, you are constantly being thrown off balance. So much is going

:03:54. > :03:57.on, you need to be aware of everything and with slower riders,

:03:58. > :04:02.having just slung someone else, you have to be careful not to lose

:04:03. > :04:08.momentum on the changeover, so always looking at who is about to

:04:09. > :04:12.come in, so it is incredibly skilful by both the British riders to stay

:04:13. > :04:16.upright the whole race. Here it is, the first-ever medals ceremony for

:04:17. > :04:22.the women's madison at the World Championships. .

:04:23. > :04:30.What a great race it was and the happy faces of the winning duo from

:04:31. > :04:35.Belgium, Kopecky and Jolien D'Hoore, the European champions are now the

:04:36. > :04:41.world champions as well. Winner of the bronze medal... First up, the

:04:42. > :04:47.bronze-medallists on the right-hand side your picture, another medal for

:04:48. > :04:56.Australia here, Amy Cure and Alexandra madly. You can see the

:04:57. > :05:07.effort that the racing tailed and also for Manly, having crashed twice

:05:08. > :05:15.in the race. It looked -- looks as if Amy Cure is holding her

:05:16. > :05:20.team-mate. Not so surprising that she is a bit wobbly. Now for the

:05:21. > :05:33.silver-medallists, Great Britain, Emily Barker and Elinor, who --

:05:34. > :05:39.Emily Nelson and Elinor Barker, who started lose, instigated others, and

:05:40. > :05:45.made sure their place on the podium was never in doubt. Superb

:05:46. > :06:04.tactically and physically, you have to be satisfied with that.

:06:05. > :06:11.So Kopecky and Jolien D'Hoore receive the acclaim of the crowd as

:06:12. > :06:17.the first-ever world champions in the women's madison. No surprise to

:06:18. > :06:23.see the rainbow jerseys going to the Belgian riders, because they are so

:06:24. > :06:27.good at this type of racing and from Great Britain's point of view, I

:06:28. > :06:32.would regard that as a silver medal won rather than a gold medal lost.

:06:33. > :06:36.Yes, they might have played a bit rough but they had it physically,

:06:37. > :06:40.they had it tactically and they had it technically. This pair won the

:06:41. > :06:46.European championship last year and now they have added the big one. You

:06:47. > :06:50.wouldn't think this was a new event to the World Championships, so many

:06:51. > :06:56.skilful teams in there, it does look like it has been ridden for many

:06:57. > :06:59.years. Let's hope we see it in the Olympic Games in Tokyo, the decision

:07:00. > :07:00.still to be taken but it is certainly an exciting form of

:07:01. > :07:09.racing. Belgium just too quick in the end

:07:10. > :07:15.and now we will have the Belgian national anthem shortly, the prizes

:07:16. > :07:21.are still being handed out. Brian Cookson, the president of the UCI.

:07:22. > :07:27.Amy Cure of Australia on the podium for the third time this week. She

:07:28. > :07:30.has a silver from the team pursuit, bronze in the omnium, another bronze

:07:31. > :07:36.medal there. No wonder she looks disappointed, having been in such

:07:37. > :07:43.good form, not quite landing what would have been her third world

:07:44. > :07:47.title. I get the impression that Manly is feeling a bit rough after

:07:48. > :07:51.those crashes she was involved in. To actually stand still when you

:07:52. > :07:55.others die hatred is a bit tough to do. Here we go, the national anthem

:07:56. > :07:58.of Belgium. -- when you are a bit dehydrated is a bit tough to do.

:07:59. > :09:07.APPLAUSE .

:09:08. > :09:13.CLARE BALDING: benefit the of experience and the joy of teamwork,

:09:14. > :09:16.Belgium taking the gold medal, Kopecky and Jolien D'Hoore, head of

:09:17. > :09:20.Elinor Barker and Emily Nelson but a fourth medal of these World

:09:21. > :09:23.Championships for Great Britain and considering it wasn't meant to be a

:09:24. > :09:28.great World Championships, going there with a very inexperienced

:09:29. > :09:31.young team, so far, so good. I think it is part of the course. I think we

:09:32. > :09:35.could have hoped for some medals in other events but the way we have

:09:36. > :09:39.surprised ourselves with the scratch race, certainly for Chris Latham...

:09:40. > :09:46.A little bit disappointed that there are no medals from the sprint side

:09:47. > :09:48.yet, Ryan Owens still has a chance. They haven't underperformed

:09:49. > :09:50.massively but they haven't had the luck going their way the same time

:09:51. > :09:56.as having the performance, so fingers crossed Ryan can produce the

:09:57. > :10:00.bronze medal ride. It is all about the endurance riders, Joe. It is,

:10:01. > :10:06.and interestingly, Great Britain have always been strong in the timed

:10:07. > :10:15.events, but all four medal so far have come from start races. And we

:10:16. > :10:19.are missing our best race, Laura Kenny. Defending champion in scratch

:10:20. > :10:24.racing and omnium but we have had a silver in scratch, gold in the

:10:25. > :10:28.omnium, silver in the men's scratch. I think it sends a good message to

:10:29. > :10:33.the rest of the world that we are not just time trialists and we can

:10:34. > :10:37.win bunch races as well, we have had a brilliant week so far. Laura

:10:38. > :10:41.Kenny's big revelation yesterday sitting here was to drop in a line

:10:42. > :10:46.about the fact that Jason Kenny might retire. I just went "What?" We

:10:47. > :10:51.never thought that would have in thought he was taking a rest but you

:10:52. > :10:55.think retirement is in his mind? I think he's being sensible, and he is

:10:56. > :10:58.having a proper break. It was a tough four years up to Rio, he

:10:59. > :11:03.performed incredibly well, three gold medals, phenomenal, but his

:11:04. > :11:06.life is changing. They are expecting their first child together, it is

:11:07. > :11:11.going to be a really interesting few months and I think he may be wants

:11:12. > :11:14.to let that pass and see how he feels and sometimes you have to wait

:11:15. > :11:19.until you have that real hunger to want to get back out on the track.

:11:20. > :11:23.It is a long time until Tokyo but at the same time, if you wait until too

:11:24. > :11:27.long, Ryan Owens could come along and established himself as the main

:11:28. > :11:30.sprinter. The team that was here for the team sprint, they are all

:11:31. > :11:34.separate to the Rio team, Joe Truman, Jack Carlin and Ryan Owens,

:11:35. > :11:39.who potentially could be shouldering their way in as the 18 for the team

:11:40. > :11:42.sprint. What are the sort of questions Jason will have to ask

:11:43. > :11:46.himself an answer to make a different decision from you? You

:11:47. > :11:50.said you couldn't do it again. I think motivation has to come from

:11:51. > :11:54.within. It is easy to say if you have just got one medal, but it is

:11:55. > :11:59.not just one medal, one more Olympics, it is a tough ask. Is he

:12:00. > :12:03.motivated to go do that? Like Chris has said, now is the time to take

:12:04. > :12:08.the break, the downtime and with the changes for him and Laura coming up,

:12:09. > :12:12.why not? That is the way forward. Let's head back to the live action,

:12:13. > :12:14.here we go for the bronze medal race for the women's individual pursuit,

:12:15. > :12:28.Australia against USA. Perfect timing, way they go, the

:12:29. > :12:32.bronze medal ride in the women's individual pursuit. Wiasak, world

:12:33. > :12:36.champion for the last two years, didn't make it into the final the

:12:37. > :12:40.share, up against Kelly Catlin, who is the world champion in the team

:12:41. > :12:45.pursuit this year and last year so a real high quality pair. She

:12:46. > :12:51.qualified fastest but only by a tenth of a second, so this could be

:12:52. > :12:56.a real nailbiter. Wiasak has gone strongly. The handlebars that these

:12:57. > :12:59.riders are tilted upwards, all about gaining aerodynamic advantage and

:13:00. > :13:03.rolling those shoulders. I think there is unfinished business between

:13:04. > :13:06.these two, certainly from Wiasak's point of view, she was part of the

:13:07. > :13:11.Australian team that were just pipped to the line in the epic

:13:12. > :13:14.women's team pursuit final the other day. Ending up with a silver medal

:13:15. > :13:25.there, can she get a measure of revenge against the American here?

:13:26. > :13:28.It is close as they move through this opening kilometre, a tenth of a

:13:29. > :13:32.second in it, swinging one way or the other. This one will be a fight

:13:33. > :13:34.all the way and it will be as much about who has recovered as anything

:13:35. > :13:38.else. Just a few hundreds of seconds in it as they come around to finish

:13:39. > :13:46.off his opening kilometre. Slightly slower, or just about the same, as

:13:47. > :13:52.this morning's opener. So on for more 3:30s, I think. Seven laps to

:13:53. > :13:56.go till over the line, less than a tenth of a second between them and

:13:57. > :14:00.it has barely changed. Incredible bit of pacing. It would be very hard

:14:01. > :14:06.to recreate this kind of pacing, to be honest. They are very, very well

:14:07. > :14:13.matched. They are well off the pace of died art, so bronze medal

:14:14. > :14:17.position, but will be? Rebecca Wiasak won the bronze medal in her

:14:18. > :14:22.first world championship two years ago. She's 32, bit of a late

:14:23. > :14:29.developer, but two rainbow jerseys won by her already in her career as

:14:30. > :14:32.an individual pursuit rider. It is Catlin has the lead by over two

:14:33. > :14:37.tenths of a second. Wiasak had pulled away by this point in the

:14:38. > :14:42.previous round, the two K mark. She had a solid lead. But she didn't

:14:43. > :14:47.finish as fast as Catlin. Kelly Catlin decided about three years ago

:14:48. > :14:51.to put her college studies on hold for a cycling career, put off that

:14:52. > :14:55.studying at the University of Minnesota to see if she could get to

:14:56. > :15:00.the Olympic Games and World Championships and so far, it is

:15:01. > :15:05.proving to be a good choice. Catlin just pulling away now, half a

:15:06. > :15:10.second, moving away. She had the momentum on her side. How fast can

:15:11. > :15:16.she finish? Wiasak is a fast finisher. She is on a big gear. She

:15:17. > :15:20.will have the strength role she is worth, just two laps to go. Now she

:15:21. > :15:24.comes over the line, roared on by her coach on the side of the track.

:15:25. > :15:29.At the moment, Kelly Catlin is looking good and almost three

:15:30. > :15:33.quarters of a second. It looks like the bronze is heading towards the

:15:34. > :15:37.United States at the moment, moving out towards more than three quarters

:15:38. > :15:42.of a second. That is a lot with a lap to go. It is a 250 metres sprint

:15:43. > :15:46.but the USA are set to take the bronze medal in the women's

:15:47. > :15:51.individual pursuit through Kelly Catlin. Catlin almost there. About a

:15:52. > :15:53.quarter of a lap remaining, into the back straight, up towards the line

:15:54. > :16:07.and the bronze medal is hers. Eight tenths of a second between the

:16:08. > :16:14.two riders, a hell of a race. Incredibly even paste ride by both

:16:15. > :16:21.riders, really close all the way through, decided in the last 2-3

:16:22. > :16:28.laps of that race, really. Nicely out of the blocks, not rolling down

:16:29. > :16:38.the tracks, good line. You can see the fatigue towards the end. To be

:16:39. > :16:48.fair, it has been a busy week, with the team pursuit as well. Two fors

:16:49. > :16:53.in this competition rather strange seeing Sarah Hammer in this event,

:16:54. > :17:03.isn't it? Yes, five times the world champion in this discipline. But a

:17:04. > :17:07.bronze there for the USA as we know prepare for the final itself. The

:17:08. > :17:18.race for gold will be on shortly as soon as Kelly Catlin and Rebecca

:17:19. > :17:28.Wiasak are of like the track. The countdown has not started yet, but

:17:29. > :17:33.both riders are on their bikes and imposition. What about Chloe Dygert,

:17:34. > :17:40.you were really impressed by the ride by her today. They did into

:17:41. > :17:46.context. The fastest ever end that level, I believe and she was within

:17:47. > :17:55.a second of the world record, quite humid, and I am just wondering if we

:17:56. > :18:00.may see that record. From Australia, Ashlee Ankudinoff. She won a bronze

:18:01. > :18:04.medal in this race before but it was five years ago when the

:18:05. > :18:14.championships were held in Melbourne. The final few seconds.

:18:15. > :18:19.The women's individual pursuit final gets going here, Ashlee Ankudinoff

:18:20. > :18:22.on the right of your screen from Australia against Chloe Dygert from

:18:23. > :18:27.the United States, and Dygert really is one of the rising stars of world

:18:28. > :18:32.cycling, the junior world road race and trial champion in Richmond in

:18:33. > :18:36.2015. She has already won two world titles, this year and last year, as

:18:37. > :18:40.part of the team pursuit scorer for the USA and now she is going for

:18:41. > :18:44.some glory on her own. Yes, she went into this final ride with her own

:18:45. > :18:49.six and a half second advantage on paper, one of the biggest I think I

:18:50. > :18:56.have ever seen. So it should go her way, just a question of how much. A

:18:57. > :18:59.fast starter, 1.10 in the previous round when she got so close to that

:19:00. > :19:04.world record and I wonder, and we will find out in the next 20 seconds

:19:05. > :19:08.or so, whether she is on track. Already a second ahead. She has

:19:09. > :19:18.started like a train, Chloe Dygert. Absolutely flying. 1.3 seconds

:19:19. > :19:22.already. Good gear selection as well, nice crouched position, you

:19:23. > :19:26.can see this trend, tilting at the hands, which has a rounding effect

:19:27. > :19:32.on the shoulders. Every lap, she is just nipping away a bit more and a

:19:33. > :19:42.bit more. Two second away now. Her time for the opening kilometre, and

:19:43. > :19:48.there is the Australians. She is still very much in touch. With 6.5

:19:49. > :19:51.seconds, even at this level of competition, in a final, if she sees

:19:52. > :19:54.that kind of different again she will be starting to get into the

:19:55. > :19:58.slipstream of her opponent in the closing stages. If you're speaking

:19:59. > :20:02.about records that could help to make all the distance potentially --

:20:03. > :20:06.all the difference. Enormously. You start to get a discernible

:20:07. > :20:12.difference at this stage. And you mention being in the same straight,

:20:13. > :20:15.and indeed she was, albeit briefly. Yes, 3.5 seconds is now the

:20:16. > :20:20.difference between these two, and going up all the time. Must be hard

:20:21. > :20:23.on the other side of the track from a performer like this. Isn't it

:20:24. > :20:27.amazing to think both of these riders of course went faster than

:20:28. > :20:30.the two we have just seen, but the gap is so much bigger between the

:20:31. > :20:36.top two. Chloe Dygert, sailing towards the gold medal here for the

:20:37. > :20:41.United States, briefly in the same straight again as Ashlee Ankudinoff.

:20:42. > :20:44.We will not see that world record challenged tonight but it will be

:20:45. > :20:50.another superb time, less than a second behind it at the moment. And

:20:51. > :20:55.moving swiftly towards her up on it, why it is called the pursuit, about

:20:56. > :20:59.chasing down your opponent and it is not beyond the realms of possibility

:21:00. > :21:03.that she could get close here. Chloe Dygert was the star turn for the

:21:04. > :21:06.United States when they beat Australia in the team pursuit final.

:21:07. > :21:10.She did a massive turn at the back end of that race, could barely stand

:21:11. > :21:14.up afterwards, but it was worth it of course as soon as she had the

:21:15. > :21:25.gold medal round her neck, but she has recovered

:21:26. > :21:29.well and here she is about to add another gold medal. What a wonderful

:21:30. > :21:32.position to be in, to hear the bell, see the opposition and know you are

:21:33. > :21:34.just a lot away from taking the world title. Nothing Ashlee

:21:35. > :21:37.Ankudinoff could do here and I think she knew that at the starting line.

:21:38. > :21:39.All things being equal she was riding for second list. Here comes

:21:40. > :21:41.Chloe Dygert of the United States of America, the new world champion in

:21:42. > :21:45.the women's individual pursuit and she has won it by a country mile.

:21:46. > :21:50.Ashlee Ankudinoff comes up to the line-out to finish, the winning time

:21:51. > :21:56.3:24.61, and another gold medal for the USA in Hong Kong. 24, a

:21:57. > :22:02.world-class rider. That will be among the fastest ever recorded as

:22:03. > :22:06.well. She must have enjoyed that ride. You never take anything for

:22:07. > :22:11.granted, but when you have a 6.5 second advantage surely you can

:22:12. > :22:15.enjoy it. You wonder how much better she can become because she is only

:22:16. > :22:19.20 years of age, Chloe Dygert. Lots of youngsters kicking around at

:22:20. > :22:25.World Championships. Not just the British developing fantastic talent,

:22:26. > :22:28.some world-class bike riders all over the world and we are really

:22:29. > :22:33.getting the first round to see some of them on the world stage this

:22:34. > :22:36.week. All the countries that held track cycling, it is very good at

:22:37. > :22:40.the moment, vibrant and more than just a couple of dominant nations

:22:41. > :22:42.which I am glad to see because it makes great racing to watch and it

:22:43. > :22:48.means countries will invest in the sport as well. By my reckoning, at

:22:49. > :22:52.the last count, 15 different nations have won medals here in Hong Kong in

:22:53. > :22:57.the opening four days of competition, but Chloe Dygert, what

:22:58. > :23:01.a masterclass in pursuit, WinZip by a mile, head of Ashlee Ankudinoff.

:23:02. > :23:06.There is your new women's pursuit world champion.

:23:07. > :23:11.STUDIO: And you have raced against her, Juana browse all, what is the

:23:12. > :23:15.key to her power and strength? She is incredibly talented. She was in

:23:16. > :23:22.the team at Rio and came into the squad -- you have raced against,

:23:23. > :23:25.Joanna Rowsell. She came into their squad that went and was really key

:23:26. > :23:29.to then turning around the way to Rio. They became world champions in

:23:30. > :23:38.the team pursuit in March, last year in London, then us all the way in

:23:39. > :23:42.Rio. A huge future ahead of her, only 20 years old. She could go down

:23:43. > :23:48.the road racing group, could stay on the track, I guess it depends what

:23:49. > :23:51.she wants to do. And that is Sarah Hammer who still holds the record

:23:52. > :23:54.for the women's individual pursuit, but do you think that little

:23:55. > :23:57.smile... He's thinking, that is my future gone?

:23:58. > :24:02.LAUGHTER Yes, Chloe, but she may break today,

:24:03. > :24:06.and she might have had at least one if not two passes of her opponent. I

:24:07. > :24:10.would love to have seen her get that world record, which would have been

:24:11. > :24:14.especially amazing at sea level because Hammer's record was set at

:24:15. > :24:19.altitude in Mexico on one of the fastest tracks in the world, saw an

:24:20. > :24:22.incredible ride by Chloe, but Katie Archibald, I think also she will be

:24:23. > :24:26.sat in the pits thinking next year I will be back and keep working and I

:24:27. > :24:29.would like to see that on my shoulders. You get very excited

:24:30. > :24:37.watching the women's individual pursuit. Not many people love it,

:24:38. > :24:39.but I do! I think it is a great event because it is a purely

:24:40. > :24:42.physiological event. If you have prepared to the best of your ability

:24:43. > :24:47.and left no stone unturned you will get the result you deserve, no

:24:48. > :24:55.chance of being knocked off by somebody, tactical error. It is

:24:56. > :24:59.purely physical. What you have to be mentally strong as well and deal

:25:00. > :25:05.with that battle in the final if you are not far apart. Well, that is two

:25:06. > :25:11.votes! There you go. And was seeing this last week, I hadn't realised

:25:12. > :25:18.this. Your fitness, even to the extent that walking is something you

:25:19. > :25:23.can avoid. Simon yes, don't stand when you can sit -- yes, don't stand

:25:24. > :25:27.when you can sit or stand when you can lie. You do try to optimise your

:25:28. > :25:30.recovery around your training, so you work hard on the track, the

:25:31. > :25:35.road, the gym, then once that is done it is pretty much trying to

:25:36. > :25:40.rest up and get all those adaptations and games. This is the

:25:41. > :25:43.moment for Ryan Owens because a bronze medal potentially within his

:25:44. > :25:49.grasp. He is up against Ethan Mitchell of New Zealand. These are

:25:50. > :25:56.the finals of the men's sprint, best of the again, and this for the

:25:57. > :26:00.bronze medals. COMMENTATOR: Here we go for Ryan

:26:01. > :26:05.Owens in this bronze medal race, but up against a very experienced

:26:06. > :26:07.campaigner in Ethan Mitchell. He has been surprising people throughout

:26:08. > :26:13.this competition to get through, fought hard to try to get into that

:26:14. > :26:17.gold medal ride off, going for the silver medal against Denis Dmitriev,

:26:18. > :26:20.I guess! LAUGHTER

:26:21. > :26:23.But within a chance of getting onto the World Championship podium so he

:26:24. > :26:30.has to be pleased simply being here. Remainder, this is a best-of-3 for

:26:31. > :26:37.the bronze medal. Owens has been designated as the man who will lead

:26:38. > :26:40.for the first lap of the race. Perhaps a bit of a snapshot

:26:41. > :26:47.judgment, but you get the feeling he is a better race if he can see his

:26:48. > :26:53.target in front of him. Not quite yet got the absolute essence of the

:26:54. > :26:59.field for this event, riding from the front, about anticipating what

:27:00. > :27:02.needs to be done and exactly when, even before he has seen his

:27:03. > :27:11.opponent. The second lap of the here already. As I say, Mitchell is

:27:12. > :27:15.experienced and will not let him know his plan. Will keep them

:27:16. > :27:19.guessing. Accelerating going up the track. Trying to get him to read

:27:20. > :27:24.out, and he has gone earlier this time. The sprinters are now and

:27:25. > :27:27.Mitchell goes flying past the British rider who has a big gap to

:27:28. > :27:30.try to close it. He is giving everything he has got but that is

:27:31. > :27:37.not causing any time soon and Ethan Mitchell takes the first ride by a

:27:38. > :27:43.considerable distance. 9.9, an incredible time to have posted

:27:44. > :27:48.there. Super-quick. Yes, super-quick, and it was going to be

:27:49. > :27:53.tough to beat. Ryan Goins accelerated well down the back

:27:54. > :28:00.straight but no matter what he did there, it looked like he might have

:28:01. > :28:04.been just out-gassed. Mitchell looked really good there. Sometimes

:28:05. > :28:07.you have to hold up your hands and say, there enough, because Mitchell

:28:08. > :28:15.was really blisteringly fast. A faster time than Dmitriev posted in

:28:16. > :28:18.the spread so far. Ryan Owens has it all to do now to stay within a

:28:19. > :28:23.chance of a bronze medal. He has to win the next race. Which will not be

:28:24. > :28:28.too far away. Not much recovery time for these riders between these

:28:29. > :28:33.races. They try to give them half an hour but all the regulations are

:28:34. > :28:42.worded that they give themselves as much wiggle room as possible. Now,

:28:43. > :28:45.Harrie Lavreysen from the Netherlands here, hopefully he has a

:28:46. > :28:48.plan. He will need one to try to beat Denis Dmitriev from what we

:28:49. > :28:54.have seen so far. It could actually be a good final between these two.

:28:55. > :28:58.Dmitriev, remainder, has won medals in this event before, in each of the

:28:59. > :29:02.previous four years, but he has never been the champion of the

:29:03. > :29:08.world. That is the big pressure he is under, really, isn't it? He knows

:29:09. > :29:13.this is his chance. He knows his form as here's I am, in the final,

:29:14. > :29:19.and it is his to lose, and that in itself brings its own stresses. But

:29:20. > :29:30.he is not without experience. As they roll away. Dmitriev on the

:29:31. > :29:35.front of Lavreysen, a team sprint silver medal won already on the

:29:36. > :29:43.opening day of the competition here in Hong Kong. Second and third in

:29:44. > :29:47.last year's track championships, National track championships in the

:29:48. > :29:50.Netherlands, so it is not as if he has been winning left, right and

:29:51. > :29:56.centre. Very much rider who is developing all the time. He has

:29:57. > :30:00.certainly come on a bundle this week. Yes, it would be great to see

:30:01. > :30:03.him go for a long one, wouldn't it? I think he is down to that part of

:30:04. > :30:08.the draw, to be honest. Looking for what he can do to throw at Dmitriev,

:30:09. > :30:20.when he is in this kind of form. Who has seen it done once before in

:30:21. > :30:26.this championship. -- we have seen it done once before. Slow, steady

:30:27. > :30:34.build-up here before the race to bursts into life. Just adds to the

:30:35. > :30:40.tension. They play suitable music is well over the tannoy. You can see

:30:41. > :30:45.the exaggeration of body movements, in the upper body, to try and fool

:30:46. > :30:50.your apartment to think you are pushing harder than you are -- fool

:30:51. > :30:54.your opponent. All of these small tricks, psychological pressure on

:30:55. > :31:07.the opponent. Very interested spectator about five feet from hours

:31:08. > :31:12.ourselves, Uchikano. They have left it later, they have hardly started

:31:13. > :31:16.moving, it is not going to be a quick one. Dmitriev on the front but

:31:17. > :31:22.the Dutchman has him in his sights. Dmitri put the pedal down, keeps the

:31:23. > :31:27.Dutch man at bay and it is 1-0 to the Russian rider, Denis Dmitriev

:31:28. > :31:31.lead it from the front and made absolutely sure he stayed there and

:31:32. > :31:34.there was never any doubt about it. He led from the front and didn't

:31:35. > :31:41.really start pushing on until less than a lap to go and still recorded

:31:42. > :31:44.a 10.1 for the last 200m. He looks almost said entry the way he is

:31:45. > :31:51.pulling out the power. So balanced at the moment. Just look at that,

:31:52. > :31:56.virtually nobody movement at all. 10.1 from a quarter of a lap's

:31:57. > :32:01.acceleration, remarkable. You can see the Dutch rider really going for

:32:02. > :32:05.it but just not gaining any ground. He did well, actually, thought he

:32:06. > :32:14.had the better acceleration. The almost started to overlap and then

:32:15. > :32:18.just crumbled under the power. So we have had the first medal rides in

:32:19. > :32:22.both of the sprints for bronze and for gold. It is Ethan Mitchell from

:32:23. > :32:26.New Zealand who has advantage over Ryan Owens in the bronze medal race

:32:27. > :32:31.and Denis Dmitriev from Russia who leads the way in the final itself on

:32:32. > :32:35.in the race for gold, against Harrie Lavreysen from the Netherlands.

:32:36. > :32:40.CLARE BALDING: this could be a big moment for Demetrio Banyu used to

:32:41. > :32:43.race him. Many times, he has been to the final of World Championships,

:32:44. > :32:48.been an Olympic medallist but never managed to convert it and get that

:32:49. > :32:52.title and I'm sure this is his its best chance until now to become

:32:53. > :32:55.world champion. He is looking so strong, it is hard to see what

:32:56. > :32:58.Lavereysen is going to do, unless he goes for a long one but Demetrio

:32:59. > :33:09.will be watching and will be absolutely on it in terms of being

:33:10. > :33:16.fully vigilant -- Denis Dmitriev. What would you advise Ryan Owens to

:33:17. > :33:19.do differently? If you are going to go slow into the last lap and have

:33:20. > :33:23.less hype than your opponent, you have to have acceleration and

:33:24. > :33:29.Mitchell got a 9.9 for his last 200m, which you don't see very

:33:30. > :33:35.often. That is an absolutely blistering last 200m. Ryan has to

:33:36. > :33:38.have the height or try and just jump him on the acceleration, accelerate

:33:39. > :33:42.before Mitchell. I think next time, he will have to try something

:33:43. > :33:46.special, try and see an opportunity on the inside and pin Mitchell on

:33:47. > :33:52.the fence or go for a long one like you did in the quarterfinals. But be

:33:53. > :33:56.the aggressor? Make the decision first? Yes, it looked there and in

:33:57. > :34:01.the semifinal like he was being dictated to by his opponent, you

:34:02. > :34:04.have to take charge and impose your tactics on the race and in the

:34:05. > :34:12.semifinal and bronze ride up, he hasn't done that. We spoke yesterday

:34:13. > :34:16.about the team behind the scenes and do all the right things with you and

:34:17. > :34:20.the coaching and right by your side. One man missing from these

:34:21. > :34:25.championships is the Britain's sprint coach Justin Grace. He was

:34:26. > :34:28.instrumental in the seven medals won in the Olympics but he was already

:34:29. > :34:33.dealing with a serious illness and shortly after the Games, he had a

:34:34. > :34:37.life-saving liver transplant. He was, in his own right, very good

:34:38. > :34:42.cyclist, competing at Commonwealth Games and 13 times and New Zealand

:34:43. > :34:48.champion. This is just in's story. When I was 17, I was diagnosed with

:34:49. > :34:51.an immune disease called PSC. It affects the bile ducts inside the

:34:52. > :34:59.liver. It was picked up by random blood tests showing that I had this

:35:00. > :35:04.disease and I just kind of cracked on, I didn't really, as a teenager,

:35:05. > :35:09.just chose to effectively ignore it, almost. It didn't really affect my

:35:10. > :35:14.life at all. We were in the World Cup in Colombia in December 2015 and

:35:15. > :35:19.after we had been there a couple of days, I got pretty sick. Yan said to

:35:20. > :35:24.me I had sunstroke from spending too long in the pool and I thought I had

:35:25. > :35:27.eaten something that disagreed with me, but two days later, with fevers

:35:28. > :35:32.and stuff, I started to turn quite yellow and I knew then that

:35:33. > :35:37.something was amiss. Did it start to worry you before Rio that you might

:35:38. > :35:41.not be able to go? I think at that stage, it was the farthest thing

:35:42. > :35:44.from my mind. It wasn't really until Rio started looming closer and I

:35:45. > :35:49.knew my health was still in a bit of a decline that I started to think

:35:50. > :35:54.that I had to be very, very careful about what I was doing myself. That

:35:55. > :35:57.was partly in the duty of care you feel you have the Iraqis can we

:35:58. > :36:03.wanted to be there for them, I guess. It is nice to say you have

:36:04. > :36:08.that athletes that win as a coach, but people get into coaching because

:36:09. > :36:15.they want to help ??DELETE help the athletes. Katy Marchant claims the

:36:16. > :36:19.medal in the women's spring. He is an inspiration and at the Olympics,

:36:20. > :36:25.it was really tough and he does a fantastic job of hiding it. No one

:36:26. > :36:28.knew how seriously ill he wasn't his performance at the Olympic Games, we

:36:29. > :36:35.can appreciate that so much and we will never thank him enough for what

:36:36. > :36:40.he did for us all. It has been a bit of a journey, some ups and downs, as

:36:41. > :36:43.you expect, but generally always progressing up and every week, I

:36:44. > :36:48.feel better than the week before. When I was first told I could start

:36:49. > :36:52.riding on a stationary bike again, Laura and Jason brought around a

:36:53. > :36:56.turbo trainer for me to borrow. Cakes baked by some of the riders as

:36:57. > :36:59.well. It has been really good. Has the transplant affected what you may

:37:00. > :37:07.or may not be able to do in your life going forward? My dreams of

:37:08. > :37:10.rafting down the Amazon with my kids as teenagers will probably have to

:37:11. > :37:16.take a back-seat there. The British transplant Games are at the end of

:37:17. > :37:21.July I am keen to go and have a ride. That is really exciting to me.

:37:22. > :37:26.I didn't feel much like riding my bike for the last couple of years, I

:37:27. > :37:29.was always too exhausted. I want to participate this year and have a

:37:30. > :37:34.proper crack at the European Championships the next year. There

:37:35. > :37:38.is no need for me to consider myself not normal in any respect. I just

:37:39. > :37:42.need to be more aware of looking after myself and just crack on with

:37:43. > :37:50.life and enjoyed to the fullest we can, on our donors. -- and honour

:37:51. > :37:55.our donors. It is amazing he was in Rio at all and amazing that he is

:37:56. > :37:57.thinking to get on bike to compete in the Transplant Games, which are

:37:58. > :38:03.in North Lanarkshire. What an amazing man. He is an incredible man

:38:04. > :38:06.and to keep that from his riders, not wanting to distract them and

:38:07. > :38:11.take focus from their training and preparations for Rio, he kept it

:38:12. > :38:15.quiet. He is very modest, he was on international standard sprinter for

:38:16. > :38:19.New Zealand back in the mid-19 90s, I raced against him for a while, so

:38:20. > :38:24.he has performed incredibly well, knowing he has had this condition

:38:25. > :38:28.for his whole life. And Justin's passion for cycling carries through

:38:29. > :38:32.into the names he has given his daughters. Yes, cadence and madison,

:38:33. > :38:36.lovely girls and they come to the track occasionally to say hi to us.

:38:37. > :38:40.It is always lovely to see them. What do you think he brings? In

:38:41. > :38:44.terms of a coach, you were an endurance rider, what key thinks

:38:45. > :38:47.there's a coach to get to prepare for a major championships? I think a

:38:48. > :38:51.good coach will know how to deal with different riders and different

:38:52. > :38:54.situations. Everyone has different motivations and deals with success

:38:55. > :38:58.and failure differently, but I think the best coaches in the world will

:38:59. > :39:02.know what to say when to their individual riders and judging by

:39:03. > :39:06.Katie's comments in Rio, he that brilliantly. Just going back to what

:39:07. > :39:10.you told me earlier about not being allowed to do certain forms of

:39:11. > :39:13.exercise because they use the wrong muscles, so no walking if possible,

:39:14. > :39:19.no running, what else was not allowed? You took photos of all your

:39:20. > :39:26.food unlogged jewel food. Yes, that was always a popular one. About a

:39:27. > :39:31.week was the maximum I could handle on that, analysing the food you are

:39:32. > :39:34.eating, the calories, the carbs, the protein, so as an athlete, you need

:39:35. > :39:39.to eat a lot of fuel yourself well but a lot of the right things. We

:39:40. > :39:43.used to use an app on our phone to take photos of everything we ate and

:39:44. > :39:47.drank for about a week and then the nutritionist could see what that

:39:48. > :39:52.was, analyse it, say your portions to be, too small, more protein,

:39:53. > :39:58.mortgage, whatever they thought was better. That was better than a food

:39:59. > :40:03.diary, you can write what you want them. You can be creative. How many

:40:04. > :40:07.calories would you consume in a day? I don't know, it was a lot, maybe

:40:08. > :40:11.double what a normal woman would have. A lot to fuel your training

:40:12. > :40:15.and your recovery because you've you don't recover, you won't get the

:40:16. > :40:18.benefits. So protein and carbs are really important to have at their

:40:19. > :40:23.training session. Before bed, so it seeps into your muscles overnight.

:40:24. > :40:27.Always a big breakfast before training. I like my food, it wasn't

:40:28. > :40:32.too much of a challenge for me. When you retire, you have to learn to

:40:33. > :40:35.adjust a so-called normal life. That is the challenge but if you adapt or

:40:36. > :40:39.let yourself be followed by a Rap Attack, that is the best way. Try

:40:40. > :40:43.keep eating the same things you used to eat -- followed by your appetite.

:40:44. > :40:49.Eating the same things used to eat, that is when you gain weight. In the

:40:50. > :40:52.warm downs after the madison, Elinor Barker was drinking fizzy drink,

:40:53. > :40:56.sugary drink. Is that standard, not drinking those sports drinks?

:40:57. > :41:01.Potentially, when you finish an event and you are trying to get your

:41:02. > :41:05.muscles restored, you want a simple sugars, they are absorbed faster, C

:41:06. > :41:12.wouldn't have simple sugars or high glucose drinks during an event but

:41:13. > :41:16.post-racing, high sugar is OK. You also want protein and to get a

:41:17. > :41:20.rehydrated but sometimes, when you are drinking nonstop for days on end

:41:21. > :41:23.and it is a huge volume of liquid you are drinking, you might want

:41:24. > :41:28.something sweet just for the taste of it but you wouldn't drink much.

:41:29. > :41:32.Is there also a sense that you have to learn to usual mind again in

:41:33. > :41:34.terms of making decisions? When you are in the team environment,

:41:35. > :41:40.presumably most things are decided for you and you are regimented? It

:41:41. > :41:43.is a big problem, I think, because if you come straight from school,

:41:44. > :41:47.and the guys are coming into the team at 16, 17 years of age and a

:41:48. > :41:51.know nothing else other than the cycling world and everything can be

:41:52. > :41:55.prescribed for you, this is what you eat, this is how you train, you get

:41:56. > :42:00.a sergeant this time, your bike is fixed for you and I think as a team,

:42:01. > :42:07.we do try to encourage the riders to use their brains and think of

:42:08. > :42:10.themselves and. I know you were doing some studying or other courses

:42:11. > :42:13.outside of your cycling, but for me it was different. I did buy degree

:42:14. > :42:17.and had a bit of a life before I came into cycling full-time and I

:42:18. > :42:21.think that helped our lands and helped me continue until I was 36.

:42:22. > :42:26.The intensity of competition, not just in cycling but that all sports,

:42:27. > :42:29.at a younger age, it doesn't burn athlete out but it can make them

:42:30. > :42:33.consider retirement at an earlier age if they had other things in

:42:34. > :42:37.their life. You can see the benefits of breaks, you can't stay at that

:42:38. > :42:42.intensity for four years in one go. We have the final race in the omnium

:42:43. > :42:45.to come but before we go there, we have the new individual pursuit

:42:46. > :42:51.world champion, Chloe Dygert is with Jill.

:42:52. > :42:54.Very many congratulations, another top podium and another gold medal

:42:55. > :42:59.and a fantastic performance. How much are you enjoying Hong Kong? It

:43:00. > :43:02.is really nice, I was here last year and that was the first time out of

:43:03. > :43:06.the country than me so it is cool to be back in and enjoy everything that

:43:07. > :43:10.I didn't see largely, because I was so stressed. It is really cool to be

:43:11. > :43:14.back and an honour to have two medals. And a phenomenal

:43:15. > :43:19.performance, particularly in the qualifying race. So close to Sarah

:43:20. > :43:24.Hammer's world record. Yeah, it was really special. This morning, Sarah

:43:25. > :43:27.and I, we woke up and I went into her room and we sat and talked then

:43:28. > :43:32.she walked me through the race, so I couldn't do it without her. You are

:43:33. > :43:36.just 20 years old, already three medals at a World Championships. So

:43:37. > :43:41.many young riders coming through this American team, how exciting is

:43:42. > :43:45.it to be a part of it? You know, it is an honour. It really is cool. I

:43:46. > :43:50.love being able to go to a race and seeing someone my age and, oh, let's

:43:51. > :43:54.work together, let's go win! It is special and we are kind of fearless

:43:55. > :44:00.and it is cool. It certainly looks very cool, thank you very much

:44:01. > :44:06.indeed. Thank you so much. Chloe Dygert reacting to her world

:44:07. > :44:11.championship win. So this is the final race in the men's omnium and

:44:12. > :44:17.it is the points race. These are the standings going into it, Albert

:44:18. > :44:26.Torres out in front. You would say looking at that, going down how far

:44:27. > :44:30.could still be intention? Top ten? I think 80 points, you are 30 odd of

:44:31. > :44:37.the lead, you have to gain a lap and score massively so I would say maybe

:44:38. > :44:40.the top eight intention -- contention that anything can happen

:44:41. > :44:44.in a madison. In the Olympics, we saw big changes in the final event

:44:45. > :44:48.of the omnium and everybody... You have nothing to lose if you are not

:44:49. > :44:52.already challenging for a medal, why not go on the attack and gain some

:44:53. > :44:56.laps? You may as well leave it all on the track. I would like to see

:44:57. > :45:00.Chris race aggressively and show us what he has got. Chris Latham is the

:45:01. > :45:11.one British representative in the men's omnium, the points race to

:45:12. > :45:14.come, currently 20th of 21 so he has to make something special to happen

:45:15. > :45:19.but they have 98 laps to do so. Simon and Chris will explain.

:45:20. > :45:25.COMMENTATOR: He must have been listening to Joanna, Clare, because

:45:26. > :45:30.he has gone in front just at the very second she wished him to do

:45:31. > :45:35.that. Chris Latham is in front in this opening race. A bit

:45:36. > :45:39.disappointing for him as they look better in the last one and let's

:45:40. > :45:42.hope he can continue this in this final event, but certainly on the

:45:43. > :45:53.attack early instigating the opening move. He has some company, from

:45:54. > :46:01.Belarus and also the Belgian rider. Latham back in 20th position. This

:46:02. > :46:05.is the tactics of this race. There are those opportunities for those

:46:06. > :46:10.long shots because the riders close to the medals have to watch each

:46:11. > :46:14.other, can't get caught out. It was not the best attack, to be honest,

:46:15. > :46:18.in front of everybody and energy expensive, but good to see him

:46:19. > :46:26.getting stuck in in the early stages with 93 laps still to go. New

:46:27. > :46:32.Zealand are now leading the way. Aaron Gate, a rider I think we can

:46:33. > :46:40.expect to see quite active, instigating some breakaways, on 92

:46:41. > :46:43.points. Yes, the bell for that first five points reward. They are

:46:44. > :46:48.frantically repositioning now. They want some points out of this but

:46:49. > :46:53.also they know the person who wins the first sprint is often exposed to

:46:54. > :46:59.attack. But Gate will take it on. Yes, and Beyer on his wheel, the

:47:00. > :47:06.Italian rider up there as well. Tomas on his and going around the

:47:07. > :47:13.outside is Sajnok from Poland, remember him? Trying to take maximum

:47:14. > :47:17.points and hit max buyer of Germany as they go across. He has a lot of

:47:18. > :47:26.ground to make up, only 18 points at the moment -- Maximillian Beyer. He

:47:27. > :47:31.has to get started early if he wants to get himself and medal here, so

:47:32. > :47:35.aggressive from the off, this one. And a little reminder that the

:47:36. > :47:38.overall leader when we see the pellet on, a little closer than at

:47:39. > :47:45.the moment on your picture, quite easy to spot. Sajnok did take a five

:47:46. > :47:49.points, and the leader is the Spanish rider, Alex Torres, in the

:47:50. > :47:55.yellow and red, the only rider in yellow and red mac. There he is. He

:47:56. > :48:03.has got a little bit of company there. Some wiggle room. Back in

:48:04. > :48:08.ninth position, on 62 points, Casper Pedersen, but if you get yourself a

:48:09. > :48:13.lap, 20 points straightaway. He has had an up and down day, Casper

:48:14. > :48:17.Pedersen, because the officials told him he won the earlier race, which

:48:18. > :48:20.was on the computers and everything but half an hour later they decided

:48:21. > :48:24.they had it wrong, and he wasn't at the front at all. He thought he was

:48:25. > :48:30.leading at the halfway mark but far from it. He is now, that is for

:48:31. > :48:37.sure. Five points from getting any kind of payback for this effort.

:48:38. > :48:40.They are letting him go, and the nature of this race now, the

:48:41. > :48:44.favourites sprinting each other and then you have the ones with nothing

:48:45. > :48:51.to lose going for it so it tends to be a very fast race in this final of

:48:52. > :48:54.the Omnium. Pedersen on 62 points, one down in the standings at the

:48:55. > :49:02.moment in terms of trying to challenge for the podium. Latham

:49:03. > :49:06.trying to go again, but attacking from the front is a little obvious

:49:07. > :49:10.to everybody, but to be honest they may just get hacked off with it in

:49:11. > :49:16.the end and let him go. A little delay, and he is certainly

:49:17. > :49:23.persevering. Pedersen reads, with two laps to go until the sprint.

:49:24. > :49:35.With the main field strung up by them, have a lap down on the Dane at

:49:36. > :49:40.the moment, and Oliveira are leading the main field. Gate's taken the

:49:41. > :49:45.opportunity of everybody swinging off to try to get a few of the main

:49:46. > :49:48.points on offer. The Danish one, if he keeps going and the race goes his

:49:49. > :49:55.way there is still a chance he could gain a lap, and if he has the energy

:49:56. > :49:59.to do so. 1.4 Hong Kong which is what all achieving is about in the

:50:00. > :50:06.background hopefully coming through to you. There are national Omnium

:50:07. > :50:12.champion is on the board for Hong Kong. I think he will make that

:50:13. > :50:15.junction. He will not be alone. He is so close to the back of the

:50:16. > :50:20.pellet or no, he must be really feeling it. Only 40 metres away,

:50:21. > :50:22.unless they really start to pile on the pressure, which the art -- the

:50:23. > :50:35.back of the ... Still pushing hard, but sadly so

:50:36. > :50:44.are those in front of him, Torres the overall leader. Torres has a

:50:45. > :50:49.reasonable lead, eight points. Ahead of Tomas of France, and he has to be

:50:50. > :50:52.very careful because as soon as he starts to chase everybody on the

:50:53. > :50:57.counterattack, and Chris Latham is on the attack again. Pedersen has

:50:58. > :51:05.given up, and is waiting for some help instead of trying to do it on

:51:06. > :51:09.his own. And there is Oliveira and also the rider from Hong Kong. The

:51:10. > :51:13.right decision. He may be close but he was alone. A group behind me and

:51:14. > :51:17.they are saving up energy. He now has a much better chance of making

:51:18. > :51:21.the junction. Has given it perhaps 40 metres but now is in a working

:51:22. > :51:26.group. Certainly not banging his head against the wall in the way he

:51:27. > :51:31.was a minute or so ago. No Aaron Gate will lead them and a little gap

:51:32. > :51:37.back to Oliveira who races on the road as well. Pedersen is holding

:51:38. > :51:41.onto his mule, and the back of that group is the Hong Kong rider in the

:51:42. > :51:44.black and white. The competition is currently being neutralised by this

:51:45. > :51:52.breakaway who will have just a couple laps remaining. Three laps,

:51:53. > :51:55.when they come around this time. Oliveira has the bit between his

:51:56. > :51:59.teeth and in fact all formats of them are working really well

:52:00. > :52:04.together, not giving up, getting closer and closer. They have to

:52:05. > :52:07.choose no. Gate has not filed about this. Close enough to make the

:52:08. > :52:11.junction but if he backs off they can take the points as well. As soon

:52:12. > :52:16.as he draws level with the last rider, going into the points he is

:52:17. > :52:23.not thinking about this, has gone straight through. The Australian

:52:24. > :52:28.leads, and Chris Latham of Great Britain is in third. Albert Torres

:52:29. > :52:35.of Spain in fourth. Benjamin Thomas is now in the lead. A couple of legs

:52:36. > :52:40.leading the Australian, Sam Wellman. He is second over the line and Chris

:52:41. > :52:45.Latham gets a couple of points. -- Sam Welsford. The Australian,

:52:46. > :52:51.interesting are not looking for maximum points. At seventh position

:52:52. > :52:54.he is thinking he needs to make an attack. Looking back, though, they

:52:55. > :53:00.have 20 metres. Not the last we have seen them in this race. He had a

:53:01. > :53:07.look to see whether Tomas fancied it as well and the Frenchman clearly

:53:08. > :53:12.did it. Now another attack. 68 laps to go and Japan is getting involved.

:53:13. > :53:16.They are rider in this race is Imamaru, instigating that attack,

:53:17. > :53:21.but very quickly moving back on the field. It looks like it is the

:53:22. > :53:28.Russian now. A third of the way through this race and it is 35km/h,

:53:29. > :53:32.everybody feeling it. A full day of competition for them, their fourth

:53:33. > :53:36.event, and they have fought all the way. Nobody will be hurting more

:53:37. > :53:40.than Torres has now dropped to second place behind Gate after he

:53:41. > :53:47.has gained that lap, so now Torres has lost that gold medal position.

:53:48. > :53:49.Meanwhile it is the World Championship bronze medallist from

:53:50. > :53:55.the Omnium three years ago of Russia, then Oliveira from Portugal,

:53:56. > :54:00.looking lively in this points race so for, then Sam Welsford who looked

:54:01. > :54:06.strong in the previous elimination race, winning that, but Welsford

:54:07. > :54:09.meanwhile is still in seventh place overall on 89 points, has ground to

:54:10. > :54:14.make it and will be surely looking to make an attack at some point. It

:54:15. > :54:19.is 20 point off the podium position. 30 odd off Urwin Ian Stewart, and

:54:20. > :54:25.they would be very wise to keep an eye on them -- 30 odd off a win

:54:26. > :54:32.here, and they would be wise to keep an eye on him. And now the rally

:54:33. > :54:39.from Kazakhstan, and Aaron Gate tries to close that down

:54:40. > :54:43.straightaway. Gate now in pole position, a clever rider, just

:54:44. > :54:46.inject a little pace but only 20-30 metres before swinging it, will not

:54:47. > :54:54.be caught out over extending himself chasing the line of placed riders.

:54:55. > :55:01.The front racer is now being watched very closely. Gate keeps an eye on

:55:02. > :55:04.Torres and Tomas and if he makes sure no breaks up and he

:55:05. > :55:09.automatically has allies for the chasing, is a very tactical... On

:55:10. > :55:13.the attack, underneath! The officials may have something to say

:55:14. > :55:17.about that. Torres went for it and you know has just one lap to go

:55:18. > :55:21.before the points are on offer now as they take the bell, and Torres

:55:22. > :55:27.caught everyone by surprise there, but the Italian leads the chase. The

:55:28. > :55:29.Netherlands for the line, and they come flying up onto the back wheel

:55:30. > :55:35.of the Spanish rider who just hangs on to take the five points. Consommi

:55:36. > :55:40.lodged a fantastic sprint they are, and that search from a long way out,

:55:41. > :55:44.to see four strong riders with a 40 metre lead. The danger spotted

:55:45. > :55:49.behind but if they can get it together quickly this could be an

:55:50. > :55:58.extremely important move here. And it has! Look, again. Wells -- Sam

:55:59. > :56:01.Welsford spotted it. What a move, if it comes off. The talent at the

:56:02. > :56:06.front of the race at the moment, Consommi is there, Sam Welsford from

:56:07. > :56:26.Australia, and also Szymon Sajnok from Poland.

:56:27. > :56:30.Quick turns and everything now. It they had the legs to get there and

:56:31. > :56:34.Aaron Gate bringing the rest of the field toward them know. Torres had a

:56:35. > :56:38.tough elimination race as well, fought hard and doing it the hard

:56:39. > :56:42.way here, putting himself back into the lead, four points ahead of Aaron

:56:43. > :56:47.Gate but he will have to fight all the way because Gate looks in great

:56:48. > :56:54.shape. He does, on the front of the race at the moment. Consommi there,

:56:55. > :56:59.and Suter from Switzerland as well, the European scratch race champion.

:57:00. > :57:06.He is now at the front, Suter. And the German at this rotten point,

:57:07. > :57:13.beyer -- the german at this point, beyer. yes, he is off the podium

:57:14. > :57:17.just at the moment. thomas is ahead of him in third on 111. suter not

:57:18. > :57:31.gaining much ground here, rolling up the track, and the belgian is also

:57:32. > :57:35.getting involved. and eefting attacked. Welsford with Tomas on his

:57:36. > :57:48.will, hoping the Frenchman continues in his effort so he can join in the

:57:49. > :57:54.back -- Thomas on his wheel. Having to do a lot of chasing to get across

:57:55. > :57:57.and that seems to be what it is. No one is getting an easy ride here.

:57:58. > :58:03.Almost halfway through this race already, the final of four in the

:58:04. > :58:07.newly revamped men's Omnium competition. Remember Katie

:58:08. > :58:10.Archibald won the women's Omnium 24 hours ago and at the end of this

:58:11. > :58:14.race we will know who will be crowned as the new men's champion,

:58:15. > :58:19.the sprint coming up now, Oliveira, a crash at the back end of the field

:58:20. > :58:30.with the Japanese rider, Imamaru. Sam Welsford sprints with Oliveira,

:58:31. > :58:36.a couple of points and there is one... Thomas really got a turn of

:58:37. > :58:44.speed as well and Torres is on the back that I think. The Italian is up

:58:45. > :58:52.into fourth on 98 points, just ahead of Beyer, also on 98. Consonni can

:58:53. > :58:57.also smell the possibility of the next age. Beyer is an interesting

:58:58. > :59:01.one for me, taking this risk riding at the back, which has now forced

:59:02. > :59:05.him to come back across, and I am just wondering if he is waiting for

:59:06. > :59:11.the closing stages. Some classy riders waiting in that fifth two

:59:12. > :59:14.tenth position. As the Japanese rider Imamaru gets pushed back into

:59:15. > :59:17.the race, world junior points champion a couple of years ago, and

:59:18. > :59:24.he will join in at the next time they come past, in a few seconds'

:59:25. > :59:30.time. Simone Consonni on the front at the moment. A little gap back to

:59:31. > :59:34.Chris Latham, in third place at the moment in the line. It has been too

:59:35. > :59:39.active for him, giving himself an opportunity to get into a move.

:59:40. > :59:45.Since that opening move it has been absolutely flat-out, hasn't it?

:59:46. > :59:48.Let's look at that attack by Torres. Oh, well, he actually attacked on

:59:49. > :59:53.the inside of the tracks, so there is probably going to be a price to

:59:54. > :59:55.be paid for that. I think he may have his point is stripped from him.

:59:56. > :00:01.We can just about hear something being announced at the moment...

:00:02. > :00:10.We will keep an eye on the race. You're not allowed to race off the

:00:11. > :00:15.track, you can slide into the rest of the peloton and cause a massive

:00:16. > :00:23.crash. Sam Welsford riding on the front, Aaron Gate still there. Gate

:00:24. > :00:26.has gone again and taken Thomas within. Welsford wanted this to

:00:27. > :00:31.happen but he wanted to be in it and now he has to chase across. I think

:00:32. > :00:36.Welsford is having to do quite a bit of chasing in this race so far. Both

:00:37. > :00:39.him and Aaron Gate are trying to keep the pace high and not let

:00:40. > :00:47.anyone else recover, because they are the best endurance races. Chris

:00:48. > :00:52.Latham getting into this group as well.

:00:53. > :01:01.It is really starting to open up the these riders here now. This is an

:01:02. > :01:05.interesting move. It might be big but they won't mind a few

:01:06. > :01:10.passengers, Thomas and Welsford want to gain that a lap and now they have

:01:11. > :01:13.some help to do it. This is the most dangerous move we have seen develop.

:01:14. > :01:18.Look at the turn of speed from Thomas. The sprint towards the lines

:01:19. > :01:26.such as it wasn't Thomas wanted easily of Aaron Gate. Pedersen,

:01:27. > :01:32.Welsford and lay them in there. That puts the Frenchman back into the

:01:33. > :01:37.lead. But I don't think Aaron Gate can do anything about the sprinting

:01:38. > :01:42.prowess are Thomas at the moment. , Is hoping to go one better than last

:01:43. > :01:45.year in the madison, he won the silver medal 13 months ago and

:01:46. > :01:57.clearly has his heart set on gold here and he is the new leader.

:01:58. > :02:03.Torres is incurred. The danger has been spotted and the other cyclists

:02:04. > :02:07.have had to react, the bunch has exploded but the four chasing riders

:02:08. > :02:10.are coming across to what this is this -- what is this very large

:02:11. > :02:15.front group now. Torres having to do an awful lot of work, having to

:02:16. > :02:18.spend a lot of energy just getting back on terms. Thomas now having

:02:19. > :02:27.something of a break and able to recover before the next sprint. 36

:02:28. > :02:34.laps to go. It is Gate riding on the front. Hong Kong with a Ryder Cup

:02:35. > :02:38.there as well. Thomas stopping to look around, he needs to think about

:02:39. > :02:43.this because he can out sprint gates but he won't out pursuit him. If

:02:44. > :02:51.Gate can get away, he will be a difficult driver to beat. The New

:02:52. > :02:56.Zealander has some ropey. Gate has some advantage and Welsford is the

:02:57. > :03:03.man trying to close it down. Thomas over his handlebars closes down that

:03:04. > :03:08.route. Oliveira looking lively the longer the race goes on. He sees

:03:09. > :03:13.that Pedersen is behind him, with Eefting, but Aaron Gate has really

:03:14. > :03:16.got the bit between his teeth. Thomas has delivered to the lap of

:03:17. > :03:19.the gods, he hasn't got the ability to chase so he has gone back into

:03:20. > :03:25.the groove and said, no, I am not chasing. Torres has gone through it

:03:26. > :03:30.and says you are rather spend or I accept the challenge and he has

:03:31. > :03:37.closed the gap. Only Gate left out in front. Quite a big turn of pace

:03:38. > :03:43.from Consonni. He is chasing for all he's worth. Roy Eefting of the

:03:44. > :03:47.Netherlands is following him. Eefting in the bright orange helmet.

:03:48. > :03:51.Down the back straight they go but Aaron Gate is still ploughing along

:03:52. > :03:55.upfront, trying to claim those five points. If he takes the points on

:03:56. > :04:00.the line here, he will be the new leader ahead of Benjamin Thomas of

:04:01. > :04:06.France. It is incredible, the pacey is maintaining. Welsford is

:04:07. > :04:09.inadvertently changing the shape of this race by pulling a lot of the

:04:10. > :04:17.favourites along, desperately trying to get across. Consonni trying to

:04:18. > :04:23.chip away to get closer to the podium. Will Gate take a rest or go

:04:24. > :04:25.straight past the backmarkers? He needs to keep the pressure on but he

:04:26. > :04:30.has been out there an awful long time on his own, it might not be a

:04:31. > :04:33.very palatable prospect. Doesn't like you will get any help. Talking

:04:34. > :04:43.about Max Bier and why we hadn't seen much of him, it is basically

:04:44. > :04:47.because he hasn't got anything less -- Beyer. Gate has caught the

:04:48. > :04:49.backmarkers and they have made a big train to help the others bridge the

:04:50. > :04:58.gap. He has seen it and realised it is all over. Awesome effort from

:04:59. > :05:04.him. Albacore is, who led at the start of this final race, down into

:05:05. > :05:11.the bronze medal -- Albert Torres. He knows he will not outsprint the

:05:12. > :05:20.Frenchman, Aldo Thomases are likely -- although Thomas is three points

:05:21. > :05:24.behind, Gate needs to be alone to win the title. And it doesn't have

:05:25. > :05:29.much to do it, 26 laps to go Andy May need a hint of a breather for

:05:30. > :05:34.some Casper Pedersen goes off the front once more. Thomas, the New

:05:35. > :05:38.Zealander has laid his hand and Thomas knows exactly what he has got

:05:39. > :05:46.to do, just follow you and outsprint you and I will probably be world

:05:47. > :05:50.champion. I think he will constrain his action to follow the New

:05:51. > :05:55.Zealander. I think Thomas would back himself in that. Aaron Gate is the

:05:56. > :06:00.overall leader of the omnium. He is going out of Pedersen prolonged

:06:01. > :06:06.turns on the front, I don't know. Sure enough, he spins out and so

:06:07. > :06:16.does Thomas. A bit of a waste of energy. A little look behind by the

:06:17. > :06:23.Kazakhstan rider. Pedersen still at the front, looking a bit tired. He

:06:24. > :06:29.will do well to stay in front for the next three laps. Even if he gets

:06:30. > :06:34.a lap, he won't threaten those on the podium, so he will be allowed

:06:35. > :06:38.some leeway. Gate is now struggling. It was the perfect time to attack

:06:39. > :06:41.before because he was in a break with the Frenchman and knew he was

:06:42. > :06:46.spent, the better endurance rider, took the opportunity to keep the

:06:47. > :06:50.pressure on. He must be scratching his head as to wonder what he could

:06:51. > :06:57.do. It might be in the lead but effectively, he will lose this race.

:06:58. > :07:11.Here we go, as they take the bell. Malakhov of Russia at the front,

:07:12. > :07:16.Aaron Gate and Thomas following. Sajnok those on the outside.

:07:17. > :07:22.Benjamin Thomas pushes him on the line and collect the points. Yes,

:07:23. > :07:27.just gets it. So it was Pedersen who took the five points, Thomas takes

:07:28. > :07:35.three, Malakhov to an Aaron Gate one. There is only one point in it

:07:36. > :07:38.now. Down to one point, it must be so frustrating, he has

:07:39. > :07:40.counter-attacked immediately after the Frenchman has gone for the

:07:41. > :07:46.sprint but when you know you have got one man to watch, you can find

:07:47. > :07:52.it from somewhere to get on the wheel. Here comes Welsford, 18 laps

:07:53. > :07:57.in which to try and do something. Tries to instigate an attack, Ivo

:07:58. > :08:00.Oliveira is a willing partner. He can still get on the podium, late in

:08:01. > :08:08.the game, but it is although nothing. He is 694 points but

:08:09. > :08:14.Olivera has plenty of miles on his legs. He got six on the Tour of

:08:15. > :08:18.Algarve already this season. I think at last he has managed to generate

:08:19. > :08:22.the opportunity. A good gap behind, sat up for a second and I don't

:08:23. > :08:29.think they will see him again until he comes back through the ranks.

:08:30. > :08:34.Torres, who is in the bronze medal position, takes it on his shoulders

:08:35. > :08:38.as he has do and it is a searing burst of pace from Torres in the

:08:39. > :08:41.closing stages of this race to try and preserve that bronze medal

:08:42. > :08:44.because he could see it potentially disappearing up the road on the

:08:45. > :08:53.shoulders of the Australian Welsford. What a ride by Torres. He

:08:54. > :08:58.has gone straight past Welsford. I didn't think he had that left in him

:08:59. > :09:04.and it has changed the race behind. Thomas and Aaron Gate have had to

:09:05. > :09:13.react and it might give Aaron Gate another opportunity. Now Thomas

:09:14. > :09:18.brings up that track with Aaron Gate and says I am not going to risk it,

:09:19. > :09:23.I am not to do any of the work, called his bluff and Aaron Gate has

:09:24. > :09:26.crumbled and is doing the chasing, carrying the Frenchman. The

:09:27. > :09:30.Frenchman is not having any of it, Benjamin Thomas, just sticking to

:09:31. > :09:36.his wheel, refusing to move, as Torres ploughs on. He has got

:09:37. > :09:40.Eefting on his wheel, we haven't seen Roy Eefting do much in

:09:41. > :09:47.particular jewel. He is just trying to hang on to the coat-tails of

:09:48. > :09:54.Spaniard. Torres, with 11 laps to go in this race, is looking to scoop up

:09:55. > :09:58.some points. Thomas, very ungentlemanly, sitting on the wheel,

:09:59. > :10:05.not working but now going to go for the points. Within the rules but

:10:06. > :10:11.really pushing it. So Torres comes around with Eefting and gains a lap

:10:12. > :10:18.on the field. Torres says his big effort for the final 18 laps also.

:10:19. > :10:23.Does well to avoid the rider from Hong Kong who has veered at the

:10:24. > :10:29.track in front. Gael Suter runs off the front of the peloton. Torres is

:10:30. > :10:51.not a spent force at all. He is just back in the lead now. Torres Lee did

:10:52. > :10:51.on 138 -- leading on 130th. Speaking quite audacious, seven laps

:10:52. > :10:52.remaining, got himself back into the lead. Have Thomas, who has been

:10:53. > :11:00.using some negative tactics, has slipped down. It has changed again.

:11:01. > :11:05.Torres is now down to third, he was the leader for about 30 seconds.

:11:06. > :11:09.Seven points in it between the three podium places. It is going to be

:11:10. > :11:14.between them, it has to be between them and double points in this last

:11:15. > :11:18.sprint. So it all comes down to the final charge at the line, unless

:11:19. > :11:24.there are riders of the road to mop of those points. What a big finish

:11:25. > :11:30.we have in prosperity and we won't have to wait long to see it, inside

:11:31. > :11:35.the final five laps of the race. Gate has gone again, he has unhedged

:11:36. > :11:40.Thomas but Thomas will claw his way back across. If they finish outside

:11:41. > :11:43.the points, it is whoever finishes Baha'is highest up no matter where

:11:44. > :11:46.they are in the bunch in that final sprint. So we have to watch them

:11:47. > :11:52.even if they are not involved at the front of the peloton. The rider at

:11:53. > :11:56.the front of the races Olivera from Portugal, he is the leader on the

:11:57. > :12:03.track. There are the ten point gone of the road already. Here comes

:12:04. > :12:08.Aaron Gate and his friend Thomas is still glued to his wheel as they go

:12:09. > :12:11.sailing past Chris Latham of Great Britain. Welsford still burying

:12:12. > :12:16.himself on the front of that train as they chase for all they are worth

:12:17. > :12:21.in the closing stages of this race, but Olivera has got almost three

:12:22. > :12:26.quarters of a lap on them now. Disses Antipodean help, you may not

:12:27. > :12:33.be the fastest sprinter but what if I give you a massive lead out. Goes

:12:34. > :12:36.right over the top. They take the bell with Olivera on the front and

:12:37. > :12:42.Thomas sprints away from the others and Aaron Gate overtaken by Casper

:12:43. > :12:47.Pedersen. Pedersen is coming back at the Frenchman. Olivera crosses the

:12:48. > :12:51.line. It comes Thomas. Pedersen beats him to the line. Thomas third

:12:52. > :12:57.over the line. Aaron Gate four. What a finish to the men's points race,

:12:58. > :13:00.what race it was and I think we are looking there at the world champion

:13:01. > :13:05.and the world champion is French and his name is Benjamin Thomas. It was

:13:06. > :13:15.so close. His squeaked home in the end by two points of Aaron Gate --

:13:16. > :13:20.on Aaron Gate. What a raise. Some great riding, Torres fighting back

:13:21. > :13:24.from what looked like nowhere to get himself back and get that bronze

:13:25. > :13:28.medal. Gate did everything he could, he can't sprint as well as the

:13:29. > :13:33.Frenchman. He nearly managed to escape his clutches but Thomas, what

:13:34. > :13:37.a tactician. Benjamin Thomas played his cards perfectly there in the

:13:38. > :13:42.latter stages of that race, as it turned out, but what a burst of pace

:13:43. > :13:46.that he unleashed in that final couple of laps. There was never any

:13:47. > :13:50.chance that Aaron Gate was going to live with Benjamin Thomas in that

:13:51. > :13:55.situation. Pedersen looked as if he was going to overhaul him quite come

:13:56. > :13:59.to be at one point and then finally did on the finishing straight, just

:14:00. > :14:05.metres before they crossed the line. But he was not an overall factor.

:14:06. > :14:12.Olivera first over the line, Pedersen, Thomas third. Gate got

:14:13. > :14:15.just the two points and it wasn't enough, Benjamin Thomas is the world

:14:16. > :14:18.champion, going one better than last year in London when he took the

:14:19. > :14:24.silver medal in the madison. Breathless stuff. It was great to

:14:25. > :14:29.watch, there was some real track Kraft we have just seen and of the

:14:30. > :14:31.top riders there, none of them were tactical, there was nothing they

:14:32. > :14:35.could do, they used their abilities to the best they could and try to

:14:36. > :14:41.counter each other. A real game of strategy. If we played and back and

:14:42. > :14:46.watched it, we could watch it on several different layers. The great

:14:47. > :14:49.bit of bike racing. And in the final race, Chris Latham moved of a couple

:14:50. > :14:55.of places to finish in 18th position in the 21 rider field. Victory,

:14:56. > :14:58.then, for France and for Benjamin Thomas. There is the official

:14:59. > :15:04.confirmation of the result of the final sprint, Olivera ahead of

:15:05. > :15:08.Pedersen at the end and the top two in the overall standings, but there

:15:09. > :15:12.is no doubt that that is the winner, Benjamin Thomas of France.

:15:13. > :15:16.CLARE BALDING: he is and only 21, one of the younger ones involved in

:15:17. > :15:18.the finish but he showed so much experience to give France their

:15:19. > :15:25.first gold medal of the championships. And

:15:26. > :15:36.It was canny, wasn't it, Chris? Very canny. He wouldn't expose a x,

:15:37. > :15:40.wouldn't do that, saving his own legs, and there are no rules against

:15:41. > :15:48.that, it is just tactics -- you wouldn't expose a wheel. As you say,

:15:49. > :15:53.an old guy, but young shoulders. Jimmy Dillian I do me a favour, Alba

:15:54. > :15:57.your favour next ten, an element of that -- if you do me a favour I will

:15:58. > :16:03.do you one next time, an element of that? Yes, but it is a World

:16:04. > :16:08.Championship and you are doing everything you can to win a rainbow

:16:09. > :16:11.jersey, so fair play to him. And it was mentioned earlier on, the spread

:16:12. > :16:17.of nations who have won at these so far. Australia are in front, I ought

:16:18. > :16:22.to stress, but it is good to see the honours being divided? It is good,

:16:23. > :16:26.good for the sport. Obviously we love to see Team GB in a dominant

:16:27. > :16:29.fashion but it is good for the sport to see a spread of titles across

:16:30. > :16:33.different nations, and after all that racing down to the very last

:16:34. > :16:39.sprint it was good to watch. I feel really sorry for Aaron Gate, though.

:16:40. > :16:42.I just felt he was really spending himself the whole time. He left no

:16:43. > :16:47.stone unturned, or they did everything he could, spent every

:16:48. > :16:51.ounce of energy on that, and it was a great race. For all the criticism

:16:52. > :16:55.for this Omnium format it did come down to the last sprint of the last

:16:56. > :16:59.event and I think it was really exciting to watch. An exhausting day

:17:00. > :17:04.for all of them, the new format of the Omnium, all those races in the

:17:05. > :17:08.one-day. Coming up shortly, Ryan Goins has to win the second of his

:17:09. > :17:13.best in three matches against Ethan Mitchell of New Zealand if he is to

:17:14. > :17:16.take the bronze medal in the men's sprint. So what is going through his

:17:17. > :17:20.head and what will the coaches be saying to him? He has nothing to

:17:21. > :17:24.lose now so I think they will be chatting to him saying, you have to

:17:25. > :17:27.take this on your own terms, the tactics, you have to be in control,

:17:28. > :17:31.potentially do something a bit unusual and go for a long one,

:17:32. > :17:35.surprise his opponent but whatever he does he have to impose his

:17:36. > :17:42.tactics to try to dictate and not let Ethan Mitchell choose to do do

:17:43. > :17:44.this race. It might not be reactive? No, be proactive, expose the

:17:45. > :17:48.weaknesses of your opponent. It sounds easy but it is so tough and

:17:49. > :17:52.they will be absolutely exhausted, their legs will be killing them, the

:17:53. > :17:57.pain you have in your legs at the end of a full-day's sprinting, it is

:17:58. > :18:01.almost an endurance test as well. There he is, Ryan Goins, at his

:18:02. > :18:06.first World Championships, trying to win a medal up against Ethan

:18:07. > :18:13.Mitchell of New Zealand. Chris and Simon, over to you. This is it. Yes,

:18:14. > :18:17.this is it. The one chance to keep his hopes alive and it is coming up

:18:18. > :18:22.right now. He has to win to force it to a decider. He has done so well to

:18:23. > :18:28.get this far. Can he get on the podium with a medal around his neck?

:18:29. > :18:34.I have to say, I have been listening, listening hard to what

:18:35. > :18:36.Chris Hoy's CN, quite hard being a commentator having our world

:18:37. > :18:40.champion listening to you and seeing if you will get it right a wrong --

:18:41. > :18:45.I have been listening hard to what Sir Chris Hoy has been saying, and

:18:46. > :18:51.it is quite hard being a commentator having a world champion listening to

:18:52. > :18:56.you. Do not react, it seems to be the lesson I have taken away from

:18:57. > :18:59.all of this. Let's see if Owens has. Yes, something I have been impressed

:19:00. > :19:04.with watching his races here. I think most of the time he has

:19:05. > :19:07.definitely had a plan, been proactive, tried to make things

:19:08. > :19:10.happen and be as competitive as possible throughout the race even

:19:11. > :19:13.when he has not been in the best position at all times and I think

:19:14. > :19:18.when one thing has not worked he has been very good at trying to go to

:19:19. > :19:27.plan B. This is one of the options we heard discussed, getting pinned

:19:28. > :19:30.against the fence, dictate the terms of the race, and that is exactly

:19:31. > :19:33.what he is trying to do now. Good to see he is trying to do something.

:19:34. > :19:36.Yes, and we have said that from the start of this competition, he has

:19:37. > :19:39.got stuck in and looking for ways to win against it. There we are. Or

:19:40. > :19:44.coming down to this last lap. Can he stay in front of Ethan Mitchell?

:19:45. > :19:49.Mitchell now draws level and goes past Ryan Goins of Great Britain.

:19:50. > :19:53.Has Owens got the ability to combat? Not this time, it is not his day.

:19:54. > :19:58.Maybe another day will be his, but today it is Ethan Mitchell who is

:19:59. > :20:02.just too experienced and a little too quick and takes the bronze medal

:20:03. > :20:05.in straight right but Ryan Goins should be proud of fourth place in

:20:06. > :20:10.his first World Championship. Nothing he could do about that,

:20:11. > :20:14.physically outgunned today -- Ryan Goins should be proud of fourth

:20:15. > :20:19.place. Not this year but possibly the hereafter. He can take an awful

:20:20. > :20:22.lot from this World Championships. Nothing he could do physically about

:20:23. > :20:28.this and it doesn't matter what you throw at them. There was nothing he

:20:29. > :20:31.could do. A good week for Ethan Mitchell continues, having won the

:20:32. > :20:36.World Championship in the team sprint right at the start of the

:20:37. > :20:40.competition on the first day alongside his team-mates. Now he has

:20:41. > :20:48.a bronze medal to go with it and he was an Olympic silver medallist in

:20:49. > :20:52.Rio, in the team sprint, begin by Great Britain. But today the bronze

:20:53. > :20:58.medal is his, and deservedly so. We will now wait for the final itself

:20:59. > :21:02.between Denis Dmitriev and Harrie Lavreysen from the Netherlands.

:21:03. > :21:06.Denis Dmitriev was dominant in their first ride. There is confirmation,

:21:07. > :21:15.Ethan Mitchell with a good clean sprint, beating Ryan Owens in

:21:16. > :21:18.straight fors. Looking relieved I think with that one, desperately

:21:19. > :21:25.hoping to get himself into the final and did not quite make it. Getting

:21:26. > :21:29.yourself into the final, it is hard to know what more you can do to

:21:30. > :21:33.actually try to take the gold medal here, with the form of Denis

:21:34. > :21:40.Dmitriev. Denis Dmitriev has finished twice with a silver medal

:21:41. > :21:48.in the world spread, in 2014 and 2015, -- 2013 and 2015 and he

:21:49. > :21:53.finished with the bronze in 2014 and 2016. He has tonight goes at it. I

:21:54. > :21:58.think we will be relief for him if he manages to pull an off after

:21:59. > :22:02.coming so close. Has the term, it is yours to lose, be more appropriate

:22:03. > :22:05.than right now? As I said, that in itself brings a horrible kind of

:22:06. > :22:09.pressure, when you know everything is stacked in your favour. Over to

:22:10. > :22:16.you. If he was sitting slightly closer he may have heard you saying

:22:17. > :22:25.that, Chris. We are under in this second race in the men's sprint

:22:26. > :22:31.final. Two riders at quite opposite ends of their careers. Lavreysen 20

:22:32. > :22:35.years of age, one of the bright young stars on the world stage who

:22:36. > :22:39.we are seeing for the first time really, and Dmitriev, at 31, as

:22:40. > :22:45.Chris was saying, realistically, you do see this as his chance to win the

:22:46. > :22:52.world title. Well, Lavreysen in the last round was not giving in easy.

:22:53. > :22:56.He certainly had a good go. Almost getting himself on terms but just

:22:57. > :23:02.the sheer physical power of Dmitriev at the moment, he has just got the

:23:03. > :23:09.bigger engine. But he has a big one himself as well, the Dutchman. Yes,

:23:10. > :23:13.I fret. He has ridden a little closer than he needs to the

:23:14. > :23:16.Dmitriev. Struggling to find any kind of criticism, but he has left

:23:17. > :23:21.it late because he knew he could, and that kind of thinking can lead

:23:22. > :23:27.to a bad place and I am sure he will not be complacent in this one. Yes,

:23:28. > :23:31.he has been really good so far. A superb series of sprints from Denis

:23:32. > :23:35.Dmitriev up until here, and if he pulls this race off he will be the

:23:36. > :23:40.world champion and the rainbow jersey will be on his shoulders.

:23:41. > :23:46.Trying to take the turns, feeling about the track, not letting him

:23:47. > :23:50.know whether he can pass above or below and Dmitriev is happy to do

:23:51. > :23:53.it, less than a minute away from finding out whether he will take

:23:54. > :23:56.that world title. If it is possible to look relaxed in a World

:23:57. > :24:03.Championship final, that is Dmitriev now. He is all over it. Dmitriev

:24:04. > :24:08.moves to the front, keeps his BDI on the Dutchman as they take the bell.

:24:09. > :24:11.One lap to go, and it is Denis Dmitriev. What can Lavreysen do

:24:12. > :24:16.about it? Can he do anything? He is just closing slightly but no,

:24:17. > :24:23.Dmitriev will keep him at arm's went here and in straight fors Denis

:24:24. > :24:26.Dmitriev from Russia wins the world sprint title, finally the world

:24:27. > :24:31.champion having twice finished second, twice finished third, his

:24:32. > :24:36.medal for the fifth year in a row and this year he has landed the big

:24:37. > :24:40.one, the big gold medal is his finally. Dmitriev is the king of the

:24:41. > :24:45.world. No answer to that at all, is there? And again, 10.1, round the

:24:46. > :24:49.bottom, the acceleration, incredible. You have been impressed

:24:50. > :24:52.with him, haven't you? When you see some of the strongest riding, I

:24:53. > :25:01.think it is reasonable. That kind of power. The Times he is posting, from

:25:02. > :25:05.really low speeds, those build-ups, remarkable. I thought the Dutchman,

:25:06. > :25:11.into the slipstream here, what he was desperately trying to do... But

:25:12. > :25:18.he couldn't even catch him. Amazing. So Dmitriev they are, looking really

:25:19. > :25:22.good as he wins this sprint by a mile. Here they are it towards the

:25:23. > :25:26.line, the Dutchman unable to do anything about it. Let's go straight

:25:27. > :25:36.down to the track centre and Jill Douglas is with Ryan Owens. Well,

:25:37. > :25:40.Ryan, I know at this moment you will be bitterly disappointed not to have

:25:41. > :25:44.come away with that medal in that sprint, but reflecting on your

:25:45. > :25:49.performance as using to be here in the World Championships? Yes, the

:25:50. > :25:57.evening. I have not been beaten like that before but I had to work at it.

:25:58. > :26:00.-- yes, it was a tough evening. If I thought even a year ago I would get

:26:01. > :26:09.fourth in the World Championships I would have taken that. Two years

:26:10. > :26:16.ago, I think I was still at school. Not thinking it was even on the

:26:17. > :26:19.horizon so, yes, I'm happy, yes. I think in 2008 you watched Chris

:26:20. > :26:24.Hoy's efforts as the Olympic Games, inspired you to get on a bike, you

:26:25. > :26:28.went to Rio and sadly did not get the chance to compete, but it has

:26:29. > :26:32.pushed you on, did it give you that drive to get up to the elite level?

:26:33. > :26:38.Yes, I was there as reserve which was a bonus for me at the time. I

:26:39. > :26:42.took everything I could from the experience and it had its definite

:26:43. > :26:46.pros and I learned a lot, not the easiest thing. I am a racer and I

:26:47. > :26:51.want to race. At that moment when I had to walk up to the stands, it was

:26:52. > :26:55.pretty hard, but that has kind of kept me fired up for the last six

:26:56. > :27:00.months, and it is nice to really see it come through at these World

:27:01. > :27:03.Championships. Had a good time in the team sprint the other day, but

:27:04. > :27:09.that was unfortunate, how it went in the end, but still fifth, so I have

:27:10. > :27:12.been quite harsh on myself. I think you are and I think we will see a

:27:13. > :27:15.lot more of you and I know your parents are you watching so I will

:27:16. > :27:20.let you go and see them, but thank you very much indeed. Thank you.

:27:21. > :27:25.Ryan Goins, who finished fourth in the men's sprint. As he said, two

:27:26. > :27:31.years ago he was still studying at university. There is the medal table

:27:32. > :27:33.then with just one day to go at these Track Cycling World

:27:34. > :27:37.Championships. Australia out in front with Russia going well as

:27:38. > :27:42.well, Great Britain in fifth place with one gold, two silver and one

:27:43. > :27:46.bronze. One of those was won today in the women's madison. The more you

:27:47. > :27:49.can watch live coverage from seven o'clock in the morning and he will

:27:50. > :27:51.be bringing you highlight at one o'clock tomorrow afternoon and we

:27:52. > :27:57.will try to pack everything into that because that final session

:27:58. > :28:01.includes the men's madison. That is Hollywood and Mark Stewart in that,

:28:02. > :28:13.we have the women's keirin, and... Yes, Callum Skinner. And we have the

:28:14. > :28:18.big one tomorrow for Elinor Barker. I think it could be her one

:28:19. > :28:21.tomorrow. I think this is probably her favourite event. I think a

:28:22. > :28:26.really good chance for her. There could be an absolutely glorious

:28:27. > :28:29.finish for a very young team who are, I think, exciting us about the

:28:30. > :28:33.future of British cycling. Looking pretty strong out there. More

:28:34. > :28:37.coverage from Hong Kong tomorrow, but for now, from all of us, thank

:28:38. > :28:48.you for watching.
