:00:36. > :00:41.Hello, happy Easter and welcome to highlight of the final day of

:00:42. > :00:44.competition from the track cycling World Championships in Hong Kong,

:00:45. > :00:47.looking beautiful in the night-time behind me. Various events to look

:00:48. > :00:51.forward to and also assessing the performance of a young and

:00:52. > :00:55.relatively inexperienced British team, who so for have returned one

:00:56. > :01:00.gold medal, Katie Archibald in the Omni, two silvers and a bronze. Can

:01:01. > :01:05.attend in the Golden blaze of glory today? One of the features will be

:01:06. > :01:09.the men's madison, which, this time a year ago, was one in sensational

:01:10. > :01:13.style but the rock and roll pairing of Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark

:01:14. > :01:18.Cavendish. You need power, you need technical

:01:19. > :01:25.ability, team. They will be marked man. They are going to go for it

:01:26. > :01:31.here. If they don't try, they won't gain a lap and they won't gain a

:01:32. > :01:37.medal anyway. Now it is just rider against Rider. Less than 20 laps to

:01:38. > :01:44.go, Wiggins has the bit between his teeth. Absolute bedlam inside the

:01:45. > :01:48.Velodrome, 16 laps to go and suddenly, Great Britain are in the

:01:49. > :01:53.gold medal position. We had to just give everything. There is a crash,

:01:54. > :02:00.Cavendish is on the deck, picks himself up straightaway. Gargantuan

:02:01. > :02:04.effort from Wiggins now. The final two seconds of this race, as Wiggins

:02:05. > :02:09.comes around the banking and he rides up towards the finishing line.

:02:10. > :02:15.They are the world champions in the madison and it was absolutely

:02:16. > :02:22.fantastic! That was pure sporting drama. He couldn't have ridden a

:02:23. > :02:26.better script, really. It was just perfect, riding this with Brad. That

:02:27. > :02:32.is a very special moment for British cycling. It really was magical, and

:02:33. > :02:38.magnificent madison, try saying that in a hurry. Sir Chris Hoy and Joe

:02:39. > :02:41.Rowe shall stand in the studio. It is a very looking -- Joanna

:02:42. > :02:45.Rowsell-Shand. A very different looking team today. Yes, Bradley

:02:46. > :02:50.Wiggins is retired and Mark Cavendish has glandular fever, but

:02:51. > :02:54.we have a very young pairing, very inexperienced but full of talent and

:02:55. > :02:59.we hope they can produce the goods. So far, the medals have been coming

:03:00. > :03:02.from the endurance riders, including your former team-mate Katie

:03:03. > :03:05.Archibald, and Elinor Barker, who already has a silver to her name and

:03:06. > :03:11.hopefully going for gold in the points race. Two silvers so far,

:03:12. > :03:15.silver in the scratch race on day one, I felt like she almost got

:03:16. > :03:21.that, such a dominant performance by Herbert just on the line, the

:03:22. > :03:23.Italian rider nipped it away, and in the madison yesterday, riding with

:03:24. > :03:27.Emily Nelson, that was a fantastic performance, with it being the

:03:28. > :03:30.first-ever women's World Championships madison and it was

:03:31. > :03:34.great to see the British pair on the podium. Belgium are dominant and I

:03:35. > :03:39.think Britain will be back in the future to get that rainbow jersey.

:03:40. > :03:43.As we have seen with Katie Archibald, the day after the omnium,

:03:44. > :03:48.she struggled in the individual pursuit, it is difficult to back up.

:03:49. > :03:52.And also, Elinor ran in the team pursuit, so she had the scratch

:03:53. > :03:56.race, the team pursuit on Thursday and the madison yesterday, so very

:03:57. > :04:02.busy week for her, but she is an experienced rider. Only 22 but she

:04:03. > :04:07.has been on team since she was 18. She has got the endurance and her

:04:08. > :04:11.legs to back-up. She will need the endurance because 100 laps ahead of

:04:12. > :04:15.them in a points race, they get points for sprints every ten laps

:04:16. > :04:19.and an extra 20 points as they gain her lap. As we join it, Elinor

:04:20. > :04:23.Barker is yet to score, let's pick up commentary with Chris Boardman

:04:24. > :04:27.and Simon Brotherton. At the moment, Amy Cure leading them

:04:28. > :04:31.down the back straight, with Elinor Barker on her back wheel, then

:04:32. > :04:44.Racquel Sheath, Jasmin Duehring, followed by the Russian rider as

:04:45. > :04:47.well, Bob took --. So much experience... And the Russian rider

:04:48. > :04:57.has gone down and I think she has taken the Japanese rider as well.

:04:58. > :05:03.CHRIS BOARDMAN: Amy Cure is in the hunt, as is Sarah Hammer. Elinor

:05:04. > :05:06.Barker now going up onto the shoulder of Sarah Hammer and Barker

:05:07. > :05:11.should have the speed I think to come past Sarah Hammer and claim all

:05:12. > :05:15.five points, and she does, and Elinor Barker is on the board with a

:05:16. > :05:19.big five points and she is going to keep going, hopefully. What company

:05:20. > :05:24.there, that would be a pair. There is no way you will bring these two

:05:25. > :05:27.back, you will have to get on top of this one very quickly, because these

:05:28. > :05:32.are some of the world's best endurance riders who now have a

:05:33. > :05:36.30-metre lead. If you want to get away, it is a good idea to get away

:05:37. > :05:39.with an eight time world champion who is five times world pursuit

:05:40. > :05:43.champion, which is what Elinor Barker have done. Barker and Sarah

:05:44. > :05:47.Hammer have formed an alliance air and the others will have to chase

:05:48. > :05:50.oral they are worth, otherwise they will disappear into the distance.

:05:51. > :05:54.There will be no respite between the last sprint and the next one, from

:05:55. > :05:59.what we can see, and this will take it out of the vast majority of the

:06:00. > :06:03.field. Every one of the class riders in this builder want to bring this

:06:04. > :06:07.back, the pressure is on behind and they will have to keep it on because

:06:08. > :06:12.any moment, any laps when they swing around the track, they will lose

:06:13. > :06:17.ground. We get the crash of overlapping wheels. I think they are

:06:18. > :06:21.easing up, letting them go, because Amy Cure and Kopecky and Racquel

:06:22. > :06:26.Sheath have moved up the track. They have nearly half a lap's lead and

:06:27. > :06:31.this is a very dangerous tactic, to let riders of this quality go but if

:06:32. > :06:34.everybody isn't participating in the chase, people start to play tactics

:06:35. > :06:39.and suddenly they have lost another 20 metres. I find it difficult to

:06:40. > :06:43.think these two are coming back. They conceded ground and for a lap,

:06:44. > :06:49.everybody sat up and stopped racing and only those two at the front were

:06:50. > :06:57.hammering around. Barker with a 5-point lead over the American, all,

:06:58. > :07:02.rather, sorry, a two point lead now but she does have the advantage, so

:07:03. > :07:05.if they do gain our lap, she is in the defensive position, should she

:07:06. > :07:12.choose to be. The chase on behind, Belgium taking it on. That is

:07:13. > :07:16.Kopecky. Bakayoko over helping her out towards the front and Kirsten

:07:17. > :07:22.Wild is there too. You can see the gap, it is closing all the time.

:07:23. > :07:26.They have conceded the gap now, in my opinion, 40 metres from the back

:07:27. > :07:30.of this peloton, there is no way they are going to bridge the gap.

:07:31. > :07:34.They take some points en route as they come around with two to go

:07:35. > :07:39.until the next sprint. Amy Cure desperately trying to get away so

:07:40. > :07:43.she doesn't get lapped. She will have so much to do, Amy Cure, she

:07:44. > :07:48.will be absolutely gassed if she tries to do that on her own. But a

:07:49. > :07:53.beautifully timed move by Elinor Barker and spotted in a flash by

:07:54. > :07:57.Sarah Hammer. And what a useful alliance they have born here and it

:07:58. > :08:03.will gain them and lap shortly. They are going to the points here. They

:08:04. > :08:08.are probably just going to get them before they bridge. Yes, I think

:08:09. > :08:12.they did. It is all about timing and it was absolutely spot on in every

:08:13. > :08:18.sense of the word, well played, Elinor Barker. She takes another two

:08:19. > :08:23.points there from Sarah Hammer. Barker with five and hammer with

:08:24. > :08:30.three. Sauber Curnow leading this raise from Sarah Hammer. 25-23,

:08:31. > :08:35.Duehring is back in seven, so they are in a very strong position if

:08:36. > :08:39.they choose to ride defensively with 48 laps remaining. Just over halfway

:08:40. > :08:51.point, Great Britain in the gold medal position. Lydia Gurley from

:08:52. > :08:56.Ireland goes off the front once more and Rutkowska has decided to go on

:08:57. > :09:01.the attack once more. These two are very much exposed to counterattack.

:09:02. > :09:05.It is not the favourites in the race, but they will want to ride

:09:06. > :09:10.defensively and defend that lap game, they need to start moving

:09:11. > :09:13.through the field fairly soon. Not much time to catch your breath and

:09:14. > :09:25.recuperate after making that effort. Riding on board with Machacova of

:09:26. > :09:28.the Czech Republic. So I think, probably wisely, despite the action

:09:29. > :09:36.up front, they are choosing to catch their breath here. Kirsten Wild

:09:37. > :09:40.wants to get some speed into this bunch to try and close this gap,

:09:41. > :09:53.which seems to be locked at about 40 metres. They are sitting up, those

:09:54. > :09:58.at the front. Usabiaga Balerdi is the last to sit up. The others have

:09:59. > :10:02.decided not to gain ground. Kopecky on the attack, she was looking

:10:03. > :10:05.around for an opportunity, you can't let a quality rider like that go.

:10:06. > :10:10.Kirsten Wild doing the chasing and they have got a gap, so this is a

:10:11. > :10:15.dangerous move that has been spotted by Amy Cure. Barker is on Amy Cure's

:10:16. > :10:19.wheel, they have had a couple of laps up and she has switched back

:10:20. > :10:23.on. Kopecky realising she needs to do something by gaining our lap to

:10:24. > :10:26.get back in this race. Kirsten Wild had a look and saw Bronzini were

:10:27. > :10:30.sitting on her wheel and wasn't about to start the chase herself,

:10:31. > :10:36.that is why Kirsten Wild got her skates on but those three are now

:10:37. > :10:40.being closed down by Elinor Barker. Amy Cure doing a really big town and

:10:41. > :10:43.paying for it a little bit. I'm surprised she didn't swing up and

:10:44. > :10:46.look at Barker and say, hey, you have everything to lose, which she

:10:47. > :10:50.would have been within her rights to do. The pace has really got up

:10:51. > :10:56.there, Elinor Barker in fourth position at the moment as they come

:10:57. > :11:00.to the next sprint. She is in position to content per point or two

:11:01. > :11:04.here but she is really up against it in a sprint with the three she is

:11:05. > :11:09.weird. But Elinor Barker is full of beans here, full of vim and vigour

:11:10. > :11:13.and here she comes and Bronzini is a little bit boxed in and Elinor

:11:14. > :11:18.Barker is taking on Kirsten Wild. Kirsten Wild takes five, Barker

:11:19. > :11:23.three. It is surprising she had to cope without sprint after doing the

:11:24. > :11:29.chasing. Clearly she is feeling very strong -- surprising that she went

:11:30. > :11:34.for that sprint. The Australian has looked a little bit jaded and

:11:35. > :11:37.suddenly, there is a classy group of four. I am not sure if they are

:11:38. > :11:42.going to persist but it certainly causes everybody else to have to

:11:43. > :11:46.chase. I guess Amy Cure is doing so much work in so many of the races

:11:47. > :11:50.she is involved in and, at times, Amy Cure has been willing to do work

:11:51. > :11:57.at points in races where it would have been ideal for her for someone

:11:58. > :12:03.else to be sharing it. 38 laps to go, Elinor Barker from Sarah Hammer

:12:04. > :12:06.and the next rider, Kirsten Wild, on just ten. So Barker has got a strong

:12:07. > :12:12.grip on this gold medal position at the moment. She is on the box seat,

:12:13. > :12:19.needs to keep an eye on everybody. Racquel Sheath is up there, she had

:12:20. > :12:33.already lost ground. The rider from Hong Kong, can you yank. And Racquel

:12:34. > :12:39.Sheath from New Zealand. Coming through for Austria is a Verena

:12:40. > :12:48.Eberhardt. There is the overall situation, Elinor Barker in the gold

:12:49. > :12:54.medal position with 35 laps to go. A lot of bodies of the road now and

:12:55. > :12:59.Barker looks like she has decided it is time to close that then. Sarah

:13:00. > :13:04.Hammer has spotted the danger. Sarah Hammer, clearly, from the tilt of my

:13:05. > :13:09.head, saying, aren't, Elinor, let's do this now, close it down and work

:13:10. > :13:12.together again. I think Sarah Hammer realises she is unlikely, in a

:13:13. > :13:16.head-to-head duel, to get the better of Elinor Barker but being with

:13:17. > :13:21.Barker is her best bet of being on the podium. I think that pecking

:13:22. > :13:24.order is clear between the two of them and they are getting close

:13:25. > :13:28.enough to the end of this race now that they can start to do a lot of

:13:29. > :13:31.the chasing. The morality is probably going down around them as

:13:32. > :13:36.they see not only have they got a lead, they'll probably the strongest

:13:37. > :13:40.two riders in this field. -- they'll probably. I think whoever launches

:13:41. > :13:41.an attack will find very quickly that they are competing against

:13:42. > :13:56.those two riders. A minor law, two laps to go.

:13:57. > :14:03.Charlotte Becker going down the outside straight, suddenly... Not

:14:04. > :14:08.quite half a lap. Five points, if she had bridged the gap, 25. So that

:14:09. > :14:15.will be a threat to Sarah Hammer, who is on 26. Elinor Barker is

:14:16. > :14:18.involved in the sprint, trying to hoover up some more points.

:14:19. > :14:23.Charlotte Becker will get five, untroubled as she crosses the line.

:14:24. > :14:27.Here comes the sprint behind and Jasmin Duehring is beaten, another

:14:28. > :14:31.three points for Elinor Barker, to give some added cushion to her lead

:14:32. > :14:36.over Sarah Hammer at the top of the standings. He notice after the

:14:37. > :14:40.sprints, she is keeping pace on, around the bottom, which stops

:14:41. > :14:44.immediate counterattack, keeping the pressure on the pedals when she

:14:45. > :14:48.swings up so if anyone does counterattack, she can spring down

:14:49. > :14:54.and get into the wheels. Subtleties like that really important in race.

:14:55. > :14:58.Sarah Hammer moves to the front. That is dangerous. Elinor Barker now

:14:59. > :15:02.following the Russian wheel, which quickly got out of the way and it is

:15:03. > :15:06.up to Barker to choose Sarah Hammer. Hammer realises is it she is to turn

:15:07. > :15:12.silver into gold, this is the only way to do it. This is dangerous,

:15:13. > :15:16.Barker swings of the track, looking doesn't help. There isn't anybody

:15:17. > :15:20.there and somebody of Hammer's quality, you cannot give them much

:15:21. > :15:25.rope at all. Barker knows it and says it is down to me. 27 laps

:15:26. > :15:30.remaining, the gold medal is in the balance, I have got to the chasing.

:15:31. > :15:33.It is a strong turn from Elinor Barker, and Sarah Hammer looks

:15:34. > :15:37.behind and how hard will have sunk because she will have seen Elinor

:15:38. > :15:44.Barker closing. As soon as Barker comes off the front, no one else

:15:45. > :15:47.does anything. Minami one has decided to have ago and has gone

:15:48. > :15:56.straight past Sarah Hammer and the chase on now. There is the leader on

:15:57. > :16:01.the track. Elinor Barker has just dropped back into the main field.

:16:02. > :16:05.She is in a very precarious position because Sarah Hammer has the best

:16:06. > :16:10.part of half a lap and she isn't going to slow down. Personally, I

:16:11. > :16:14.thought it would have been her best bet to knuckle down and get across

:16:15. > :16:17.that gap, rather than try to encourage the others to chase. They

:16:18. > :16:30.have swung up, they are going so slow. Sarah Hammer in the same

:16:31. > :16:39.straight. She has the bit between her teeth. And when Sarah Hammer is

:16:40. > :16:43.going for it, it is goodbye forever and else. That is the first tactical

:16:44. > :16:48.mistake she has made. She was a little bit exposed. Doors for the

:16:49. > :17:02.attack. Fair play to Sarah Hammer, she's not

:17:03. > :17:06.a sprinter so she's got to find another way to win a race like this.

:17:07. > :17:17.She's trying to make it happen and it could be the lap that propels her

:17:18. > :17:29.to the gold medal. They are already all up the road. Barker has to hope

:17:30. > :17:35.that the case stays high and Sarah Hammer runs out of steam. She has

:17:36. > :17:42.helped from the rider from Japan. That will help the American. It is

:17:43. > :17:54.about making contact with the largest group. Sarah Hammer holding

:17:55. > :18:11.a quarter of the lap now. Not quite getting away. Half a lap

:18:12. > :18:14.between them. She's got the pressure. She is managing to get

:18:15. > :18:20.away with a group of four but will she work with them? She is going

:18:21. > :18:22.round the front. At least she is on the wheel of Elinor Barker. I don't

:18:23. > :18:46.think anybody else is keen on it. She is so close to what is

:18:47. > :18:50.effectively a gold medal. What drama we've got in this Points Race.

:18:51. > :18:55.Elinor Barker is in the gold medal position. Is Sarah Hammer running

:18:56. > :19:02.out of steam? Just when she looked as if she was going to catch them.

:19:03. > :19:09.If Elinor Barker is up the road there is every incentive for

:19:10. > :19:13.everybody else to keep riding but the American could make the gap. It

:19:14. > :19:27.is pursued between her and Sarah Hammer. There is only five points in

:19:28. > :19:41.it and 15 points on the board. It is really tight. She can see the

:19:42. > :19:48.American rider. At last she has slept the clutches. She has good

:19:49. > :19:54.company. Sarah Hammer might make the junction but it's quite possible

:19:55. > :20:06.Elinor Barker might do the same thing.

:20:07. > :20:22.She's not far from the pellet on. They were not really helping. She

:20:23. > :20:33.swung off the front. She is going to take the full five points. She will

:20:34. > :20:40.be awarded 20 points but the sprint points will go to the Barker group.

:20:41. > :20:49.She's only got ten laps in which to do it. The junction is made by Sarah

:20:50. > :20:52.Hammer. The judges have given that sprint to her before she made the

:20:53. > :21:03.junction so now she's got a significant lead in this race. Sarah

:21:04. > :21:08.Hammer in the gold medal position. It depends whether the Barker group

:21:09. > :21:12.can make the junction in the final two kilometres. I think she can and

:21:13. > :21:25.if she does she will probably be the world champion. Elinor Barker

:21:26. > :21:37.gritting her teeth and going for it. She is laying it all out on the

:21:38. > :21:43.track. But here comes Elinor Barker! Brilliant stuff from Helena Barker.

:21:44. > :21:47.The challenge was put down by Sarah Hammer and with only half a dozen

:21:48. > :21:55.laps to go, Eleanor Barker has done a lap herself. She has closed it. It

:21:56. > :22:01.was mostly down to her. It is not over yet. There is eight points in

:22:02. > :22:06.it. Sarah Hammer has had a break. If she takes the final sprint and

:22:07. > :22:14.Elinor Barker cannot contest that she would lose. The last sprint will

:22:15. > :22:27.be a real decider. Elder Barker has made the jump. -- Elinor Barker. It

:22:28. > :22:32.will depend on whether they can contest this final sprint. Sarah

:22:33. > :22:42.Hammer not in contention just now. I'm sure that Elinor Barker will not

:22:43. > :22:52.be able to sprint after that effort. She is following the wheel of

:22:53. > :22:55.Preston Velde. -- Kirsten Wild. If she had anything left, what the

:22:56. > :23:00.American. You don't need to beat her but you need to finish behind her.

:23:01. > :23:09.At the sprint is less than two laps away. What a cliffhanger finish

:23:10. > :23:18.we've got. It is far from being in the bag. Two laps remaining. She is

:23:19. > :23:24.on the wheel of Sarah Hammer. I think she is there. She has got

:23:25. > :23:33.herself into the right position. She is given the bell. It is these

:23:34. > :23:41.riders we are watching. There she goes round the outside. She is

:23:42. > :23:45.flying round the track. She is flying away to a gold medal. Here

:23:46. > :23:54.comes! Elinor Barker with a brilliant ride, is the champion of

:23:55. > :24:00.the world. What a bride. It was really tough. Sarah Hammer, one of

:24:01. > :24:11.the greats of women's cycling, took it to her. She forced her back into

:24:12. > :24:17.the corner. She got the lap back and sprinted for the line at the end to

:24:18. > :24:23.make sure that she stayed in front. Elinor Barker is the world champion.

:24:24. > :24:36.What a gutsy ride. It was exhausting watching it. I don't know what it

:24:37. > :24:40.was like to compete. Pretty hard. Some traders said to me I follow you

:24:41. > :24:50.because I am used to following Laura. I find myself getting two.

:24:51. > :24:57.I'm glad I could finally do it. I think I got lucky. It meant I could

:24:58. > :25:07.get back to them. That second lap was fortunate indeed. Really

:25:08. > :25:14.fortunate. She is really strong and always wants to get a lap. I knew

:25:15. > :25:19.that I was faster than her. There were a few people I thought maybe

:25:20. > :25:27.and Sun definitely. I got lucky and got past her. Tactically when you

:25:28. > :25:31.went for that second lap, protecting that towards the finish, you

:25:32. > :25:39.finished so strongly. You've been in great form all week. I might have

:25:40. > :25:48.looked strong but I sprinted to about ten. I had to be one position

:25:49. > :25:55.in front of her. When I saw that I thought this was it, gone. That is

:25:56. > :26:05.two silver medals and is now a gold medal. Really happy. I was nervous

:26:06. > :26:12.but I would get another silver which obviously would be great but it is

:26:13. > :26:19.not winning a World Championships. Getting to hear the national anthem

:26:20. > :26:24.on the podium. Everybody was emotional to see that. The first

:26:25. > :26:35.senior world title is very special indeed. Yes, really special. It is

:26:36. > :26:46.what I set out to get. I wanted to try and win it.

:26:47. > :26:52.Did not crash at all, they were ready to give me the space I needed,

:26:53. > :27:01.the focus to train specifically for it, and I am grateful for it. You

:27:02. > :27:05.could tell from Elinor Barker's voice that she was struggling to

:27:06. > :27:11.hold it together and on the podium the tears start to come in her eyes.

:27:12. > :28:01.An amazing moment, her first rainbow jersey, beating a great.

:28:02. > :28:12.What a fantastic smile. A new star. She's not the only one with tears in

:28:13. > :28:16.her eyes. Here in the studio, struggling to keep it together

:28:17. > :28:22.because it just matters so much. How much will this mean to her? It means

:28:23. > :28:31.the world to her. I love how she said after the Olympics, I want to

:28:32. > :28:34.win the world points Championship. She has executed it and it took a

:28:35. > :28:41.lot of training and preparation but she's obviously enjoyed that. It is

:28:42. > :28:46.so nice to see someone set their focus on something and achieve it. I

:28:47. > :28:51.am over the moon for her. Phenomenal effort. Her fourth event at these

:28:52. > :28:56.championships. She said she was taking a break from team competition

:28:57. > :29:00.but came into the team pursuit. Phenomenal. A really gruelling

:29:01. > :29:04.schedule. Saving the best for last and winning the first rainbow

:29:05. > :29:14.jersey, just fantastic. You see what it means to her. She paced herself

:29:15. > :29:28.so well. This is where she did the sprint. She wins the sprint, looks

:29:29. > :29:31.round, sees that she's got a gap and carries on. As she said in the

:29:32. > :29:43.interview, she had done her research. The two of them together,

:29:44. > :29:47.incredible team pursuit riders. Sarah Hammer has got the advantage

:29:48. > :29:50.on her and this is where it becomes like a pursuit. They are on

:29:51. > :29:56.different sides of the track. Eleanor Barker is aware of what

:29:57. > :30:00.she's got to do. This is her second lap gain. She is trying to help her

:30:01. > :30:10.dad chaser. It is like a pursuit there. She is at the back of the

:30:11. > :30:15.bunch. The other riders are not racing completely. She is doing the

:30:16. > :30:23.majority of the work. And credit to Sarah Hammer, 33 years

:30:24. > :30:29.old, eight times world champion, that is some scalp to take. It

:30:30. > :30:33.really is, she is renowned in the cycling world, so many different

:30:34. > :30:36.events she has been world champion income individual pursuit, on the,

:30:37. > :30:41.team pursuits and this was a silver medal in the points race for her but

:30:42. > :30:45.for El, it is always nice to beat a big name. That was really stacked

:30:46. > :30:49.field, some really big names in it and El has beaten of them. It is

:30:50. > :30:54.just brilliant. Away from the bunch raising and back to watching the

:30:55. > :31:00.clock, the men's kg. It has changed in its format, Chris Boardman can

:31:01. > :31:07.explain how. -- recommends one kilometre. By gladiators risking it

:31:08. > :31:14.all for one single moment of intense glory, kilometre riders can spend

:31:15. > :31:24.entire careers preparing for one minute of competition. Here comes

:31:25. > :31:30.Meares, and it is a Games record! Kris Boyd is the Olympic champion!

:31:31. > :31:36.They are unique creatures preparing for the high-stakes drama, this race

:31:37. > :31:40.had it all. Well, it did. I am talking in the past tense the two

:31:41. > :31:43.reasons. The event was removed from the Olympic programme post-Athens

:31:44. > :31:49.and whilst it is still on the worlds' menu, it comes in two

:31:50. > :31:54.instalments. Becky James is on her way in this women's 500m time

:31:55. > :31:56.trial... For the first time at these World Championships and for reasons

:31:57. > :32:01.we are not quite sure about, the UCI has decided we now need a qualifying

:32:02. > :32:05.round for this competition. So five hours before the final, we get to

:32:06. > :32:10.have a good look at all the riders and their form. I have do confess,

:32:11. > :32:17.it seems like a good way to steal a little bit of your own thunder. Hoy

:32:18. > :32:21.has gone off with electric pace... Speaker from a physiological

:32:22. > :32:25.perspective, riders no need to do to world beating rides in a single day

:32:26. > :32:29.and can have a marginal effect on the outcome. The ability to recover

:32:30. > :32:37.can become a new champion defining quality. For me, the beauty of this

:32:38. > :32:42.event is its simplicity. As soon as the gates opened, it is just how

:32:43. > :32:47.fast the athlete can cover 1km, or in the case of the women, 500m. Why

:32:48. > :32:51.in this day and age women aren't deemed capable of covering an extra

:32:52. > :32:56.couple of laps to do the same distance as the men is utterly

:32:57. > :33:02.beyond me. Meares absolutely flying on the first lap. A quarter of a lap

:33:03. > :33:05.to go for Becky James. With the UCI professing to want to make more

:33:06. > :33:09.crowd friendly racing, does the new format give us more for our money or

:33:10. > :33:14.has the emotional intensity of the event somehow been watered down? I

:33:15. > :33:16.always liked be he who dares, sudden death nature of the event, the

:33:17. > :33:21.psychology as much as the physiology. Would Chris Hoy's win in

:33:22. > :33:26.Athens, when he had to come out immediately after the favourite who

:33:27. > :33:30.had beaten the Olympic record, be half as crowd pleasing if he had

:33:31. > :33:31.bested Harper competition that morning in qualifying? Personally, I

:33:32. > :33:45.am a fan of quality over quantity. Tomas Babek under way, quite a

:33:46. > :33:49.character, really played to the crowd in Glasgow after winning his

:33:50. > :33:53.race. Solid start from him, gone for quite a low gear. Should see him get

:33:54. > :34:04.off the mark quickly. You can see legs pumping like

:34:05. > :34:08.pistons, almost two tenths of a second down on the fastest first lap

:34:09. > :34:13.after this point. But it is a lot quicker than his previous round, so

:34:14. > :34:16.we expect him finish quite quickly. Just no .1 behind and closing fast,

:34:17. > :34:22.so I think we will be looking at the fastest time. It is just a case of

:34:23. > :34:28.how much he can hang onto this form in the final lap and a bit. Gaining

:34:29. > :34:32.slowly a little bit. Almost level pegging on speed terms but he is a

:34:33. > :34:36.few hundreds ahead. Leading the way, needs to hold this form for the last

:34:37. > :34:42.Harper lap. Around the banking for one last line and into the finishing

:34:43. > :34:47.straight. Tomas Babek for the Czech Republic, sets a new Baptist --

:34:48. > :34:57.fastest time. Quentin Lafargue under way for

:34:58. > :35:02.France. Really good launch of the weight, he did get caught a little

:35:03. > :35:04.bit by the gate, but it was so marginal, he got most of the

:35:05. > :35:09.advantage from doing that team pursuits style lunge and he is the

:35:10. > :35:15.fastest over Harper lap, so considerably quicker than he was

:35:16. > :35:21.this morning. Quickest so far over 250 metres. Then the back straight

:35:22. > :35:26.he goes, mouth gaping wide open, still fastest, not by much. Just

:35:27. > :35:32.increasing his advantage a little bit. It is all in this quarter lap,

:35:33. > :35:36.it is staying in touch, staying in touch and then who has got the

:35:37. > :35:40.endurance for this last quarter lap? It'll all come down to this final

:35:41. > :35:45.250 metres, has he got the staying power, can he keep it going? This is

:35:46. > :35:48.when it really hurts, Winnie effort really starts to tell and you are

:35:49. > :35:53.hanging in there for grim death. The crowd roaring him home, they sense a

:35:54. > :36:06.new fastest time and they sensed right. I was hoping he would beat

:36:07. > :36:12.his previous time of 1:00.7, so quick, but not as quick as this

:36:13. > :36:15.morning. Still, it is going to get him a medal. He has three bronze

:36:16. > :36:19.medals already, he doesn't really want another one. Let's see whether

:36:20. > :36:25.he ends up with it or if it is a colour rather more to his liking.

:36:26. > :36:33.Krzysztof Maksel for Poland. The penultimate rider in this men's

:36:34. > :36:37.kilometre. The clock saying we have joint leaders at the moment,

:36:38. > :36:44.incredibly, Tomas Babek and Quentin Lafargue. We said this event can

:36:45. > :36:49.come down to a hundredth of a second, but, boy, Maksel has got off

:36:50. > :36:53.to a fast start, nearly a quarter of a second of already and you can

:36:54. > :36:58.visibly see the speed difference. What an aerodynamic tug he has got,

:36:59. > :37:05.crouching down, really low gear, trying to get the gold medal.

:37:06. > :37:11.Absolutely fine, -- flying, Krzysztof Maksel. Less than a tenth

:37:12. > :37:15.of a second in it at the moment. He is slowing, though. Let's see the

:37:16. > :37:21.time with 250 to go. This is going to be close. We are down to a

:37:22. > :37:26.hundredth of a second again. He is tying up, they have all tied up at

:37:27. > :37:30.this point. You can see how much it hurts. It is a real effort to come

:37:31. > :37:35.up to the line and he just lost it on the last lap. He had the crowd on

:37:36. > :37:39.the edge of their seats for three and a half laps, but he just fell

:37:40. > :37:44.away at the end. It is all going to come down to the

:37:45. > :37:58.last rider, and Lafarge can only watch.

:37:59. > :38:06.And away goes Francois Pervis. Three times the world champion in the

:38:07. > :38:11.kilometre. Can he deliver a fourth world crown? These four labs will

:38:12. > :38:16.tell us. He rode superbly in the team sprint, our man on form. Look

:38:17. > :38:20.at him go. He was disappointed by the previous racing, but he is well

:38:21. > :38:26.ahead now. Three quarters of a second, remarkable. What a start

:38:27. > :38:29.from Francois Pervis but still a long way to go. Stock still and

:38:30. > :38:35.almost a second ahead. We have seen one race decided by thousandths, he

:38:36. > :38:40.is a second ahead, he can afford to tie up. He looks absolutely locked

:38:41. > :38:45.in, Purvis, as he goes for yet another world title. He comes around

:38:46. > :38:50.and takes the bell and his advantage is over eight tenths of a second. He

:38:51. > :38:58.is losing it now but he has such a buffer. He is losing it hand over

:38:59. > :39:04.fist. Francois Pervis towards the line, has got enough to carry it to

:39:05. > :39:09.victory? He has! It is a magnificent seventh world title for Francois

:39:10. > :39:15.Pervis, one of the big names of world track cycling of the modern

:39:16. > :39:21.generation and Quentin Lafargue has been pipped again by his team-mate.

:39:22. > :39:26.He was so close to his first world crown but Pervis, the old stage,

:39:27. > :39:30.does it once more, back to his best, champion of the world, seven world

:39:31. > :39:36.titles, four of them coming in this event. This was a masterclass.

:39:37. > :39:40.CLARE BALDING: In 2014, Pervis became the first track cyclist to

:39:41. > :39:44.win three individual titles at one championship, the Ciaran, the

:39:45. > :39:49.kilometre and the sprint. This is his fourth rainbow jersey at the

:39:50. > :39:52.time trial. He wasn't selected for the 2012 Olympics, went into

:39:53. > :39:56.depression and has had to come back from that with the help of a mental

:39:57. > :40:02.trainer. Fastest again and afterwards, he spoke to us.

:40:03. > :40:05.Congratulations, Francois, your seventh world title but has special

:40:06. > :40:14.was it to be back on the top step of the podium? Yes, I am very happy to

:40:15. > :40:21.be back with this beautiful jersey. Last year, it was a difficult year

:40:22. > :40:35.for me but I have won medals at two Olympic Games, bronze medals, but I

:40:36. > :40:39.expect more. It is not a good orange here, it is not the Olympic Games

:40:40. > :40:44.but it is a good comeback. You have raced against him, Chris. Yes, he

:40:45. > :40:48.raised in 2004, in Athens, in the kilometre and he seems to do really

:40:49. > :40:52.well at the times that don't really count, which sounds like a criticism

:40:53. > :40:55.but he performed so well at 2014 in a World Championships, three gold

:40:56. > :40:59.medals and everyone expected him to be the man to beat at Rio and he

:41:00. > :41:05.underperformed. He has the hungers for the Olympic Games, you can hear

:41:06. > :41:09.that, he wants an Olympic title and based on that form, you wouldn't bet

:41:10. > :41:15.against it. Except that he will be 35 by the times the Tokyo Olympics

:41:16. > :41:20.come around. I was 36, easy. He was pointing out his helmet, was it a

:41:21. > :41:23.message or was it at his head? It could be a sponsor or something, I

:41:24. > :41:32.don't know. Maybe saying, "I have got my head back"? I don't know, my

:41:33. > :41:36.eyesight is going, old age. You have other benefits, making sense is one

:41:37. > :41:40.of them. Kristina Vogel is the Olympic champion in the individual

:41:41. > :41:44.sprint and the Ciaran and she had already won the first half of those

:41:45. > :41:52.in the World Championships, she is in the line-up for the keirin, along

:41:53. > :41:56.with Stephanie Morton of Australia and Krupeckaite. They follow the

:41:57. > :42:09.journey by, the electric bike and then it is every rider on their own.

:42:10. > :42:21.They follow the bike, Kristina Vogel, the defending champion from

:42:22. > :42:26.Germany right in behind. We see Vogel looking for her second world

:42:27. > :42:28.crown of the week. Bayona Pineda dirt. Fourth is Stephanie Morton,

:42:29. > :42:35.Australia, with a golden green band on her sleeve. Krupa Kate in a

:42:36. > :42:39.multicoloured outfit one from the back and in the bright orange helmet

:42:40. > :42:48.is Braspennincx from the Netherlands. A lot of experience in

:42:49. > :42:55.this final as they go round before they are released from their hole

:42:56. > :43:03.behind the Bernie bike. Will be interesting to see the tactics now.

:43:04. > :43:09.Degrendele on the front, Vogel looking around, leaving a little

:43:10. > :43:13.gap. Then there is a little space before Morton. Braspennincx is a

:43:14. > :43:16.former silver world medallist. They will be expecting her to make a move

:43:17. > :43:22.that some point in the back end of the field. Krupeckaite moves up a

:43:23. > :43:27.little from the rear end of the field, up towards the front. Vogel

:43:28. > :43:32.has a little look. That hasn't worked for anybody so far, going to

:43:33. > :43:35.the front so early, so Vogel has a lovely leader, she is happy, sticks

:43:36. > :43:39.on the wheel and looks over her shoulder and says thanks very much.

:43:40. > :43:45.She will take it on with a lap to go and say she has. Stephanie Morton

:43:46. > :43:49.tries to go round the outside, she has to go past Martha Bayona Pineda.

:43:50. > :43:53.Morton is struggling to get past. Germany, Columba and Australia and

:43:54. > :43:59.Degrendele is stuck on the inside. It comes Kristina Vogel. Vogel takes

:44:00. > :44:05.it. Bayona Pineda second and Degrendele takes the bronze. Bayona

:44:06. > :44:09.Pineda wrote that beautifully, she kept the height and she is looking

:44:10. > :44:13.no one try to get underneath and it allowed her to drop them with half a

:44:14. > :44:20.lap to go and get that extra bit of acceleration. But her form is better

:44:21. > :44:22.than anybody else's here, she... I get the impression that Stephanie

:44:23. > :44:26.Morton of Australia ran out of legs at the end of a long week. She just

:44:27. > :44:29.didn't have the speed, she had the right idea but then the back

:44:30. > :44:32.straight, it became apparent she wasn't going to make any ground and

:44:33. > :44:38.all the way through, Kristina Vogel looked like she was about to win it

:44:39. > :44:42.and indeed she did, but Bayona Pineda had the speed to stay in

:44:43. > :44:45.front of Morton and a good ride from the Belgian rider, just 20 years of

:44:46. > :44:49.age, Degrendele, claiming the bronze. But there is the world

:44:50. > :44:51.champion for the second time this week, Kristina Vogel takes the world

:44:52. > :45:15.crown, now nine world How does this feel? Awesome. To go

:45:16. > :45:20.home with two gold medals, it is two golds, I am one of the happiest

:45:21. > :45:25.girls in life. We could see that the way that you celebrated, it meant a

:45:26. > :45:27.great deal, because it is a very difficult one to win but you

:45:28. > :45:44.absolutely attacked this one. The keirin, it is about getting the

:45:45. > :45:52.feeling for the new keirin. Just watch what you're doing. Just

:45:53. > :45:56.watching the movement, what is happening on the track. I think we

:45:57. > :46:12.did good today. Another of the greats of International

:46:13. > :46:22.cycling but what did she mean? With the regulations changing, it changes

:46:23. > :46:26.the tactical approach. They are a bit reluctant to go to the front.

:46:27. > :46:29.Everybody was watching her and it was strange to feel that the sprint

:46:30. > :46:35.was starting and then backing off and everyone was starting and then

:46:36. > :46:43.waiting. She had the perfect lead. Great result for the Colombian in

:46:44. > :46:50.second place. The second medal in keirin for Colombia this week. You

:46:51. > :46:56.could ask, we are at the British sprinters? Becky James is watching

:46:57. > :47:03.on the sidelines. I think she's enjoying a well deserved break. She

:47:04. > :47:09.missed out on London. Then she had a very bad run of illness and injury,

:47:10. > :47:20.did not go to the 2015 World Championships. Just over a year out

:47:21. > :47:23.for Rio de Janiero and then she got to medals there. She knows that she

:47:24. > :47:29.does not need to be filled gas and it is up to her to take the time.

:47:30. > :47:38.Enjoying the success and the amazing comeback she's had and decide what

:47:39. > :47:45.is next. It would be great to see her in Australia. We spoke earlier

:47:46. > :47:48.about the drama of the Madison win for Bradley Wiggins and Mark

:47:49. > :47:54.Cavendish in front of a home crowd. It was a bit much to expect big

:47:55. > :47:59.things from Mark Stewart and Ollie Wood. 200 laps, and as we join it,

:48:00. > :48:12.they are struggling. He has claimed this sprint. They

:48:13. > :48:21.will take some consolation for the effort they have made to force an

:48:22. > :48:36.attack. The Belgians not scoring well.

:48:37. > :48:45.140 dome, 60 laps to go. Still trying to take part in the racing as

:48:46. > :48:50.much as possible but not in the running. Put in the running. Could

:48:51. > :48:54.have been an attack if they had not participated before but they've got

:48:55. > :49:01.tired legs, just like everybody else. The Courage is there, they are

:49:02. > :49:11.giving up. The Australians back in sixth place. A lot of damage there.

:49:12. > :49:22.Scored a lot of points over the Belgians but it was very expensive

:49:23. > :49:27.energy wise. This one will come down to technique as much as physiology.

:49:28. > :49:31.The Belgians have had the best technique. It will come down to

:49:32. > :49:40.timing. That is part of Madison racing. Switzerland are leading.

:49:41. > :49:52.Into the finishing straight. 55 to go. Switzerland, Germany, France,

:49:53. > :49:57.Netherlands, Spain and Australia. Not wishing to be disparaging but

:49:58. > :50:05.there are not many that cooperate in one event with the level of skill,

:50:06. > :50:11.intuitive by trading, courage, physiology that the Madison does and

:50:12. > :50:17.it is a crying shame that it is not in the Olympics. We hope that we are

:50:18. > :50:25.going to change that. Great Britain making the change on the inside of

:50:26. > :50:39.the track. No racing for Britain is Ollie Wood.

:50:40. > :50:49.Two laps to go until the next sprint. There is a threat to the

:50:50. > :50:56.Belgians. Australia are nowhere to be seen. They are not going to

:50:57. > :51:06.contest this. Britain are leading the way. Great Britain making a

:51:07. > :51:09.change down the back straight. Belgium will be the first over the

:51:10. > :51:16.line. Three points for Great Britain. Belgium have got to look

:51:17. > :51:31.forward and over their shoulder because the French are coming. That

:51:32. > :51:35.sprinting prowess that they've got has delivered. The Australians are

:51:36. > :51:40.wrote about one which is a surprise. I wonder if they are waiting for an

:51:41. > :51:44.opportunity to attack. They are coming around the outside. I think

:51:45. > :51:50.they might be. Here is the big attack coming. The counterattack had

:51:51. > :51:56.almost started before they swooped down the track. We are getting

:51:57. > :52:06.indications. You can hear the little whistles.

:52:07. > :52:18.Click onto the rear wheel. Changes over. Stays with him at the moment,

:52:19. > :52:27.Switzerland and third place, Germany in fourth, Ireland in fifth. The

:52:28. > :52:31.French have got on terms quickly but the Belgians, Australia's biggest

:52:32. > :52:35.threat, have been isolated. It cost them a lot to contest that last

:52:36. > :52:45.sprint and that's why you've got to choose which of these two not

:52:46. > :52:54.contest. It is unbelievably close. Great Britain are up to ninth. Even

:52:55. > :53:01.if they get back to terms they will be hard pressed to participate in

:53:02. > :53:08.the next sprint. There's only three points until the next sprint as

:53:09. > :53:19.Switzerland go on the attack. He's got some help from Denmark.

:53:20. > :53:30.The French have gone after them. That is why. Could not afford to let

:53:31. > :53:38.that one go. Spain is slipping round as well. They are down in eighth

:53:39. > :53:43.place at the moment. The Australians went on the attack, put the Belgians

:53:44. > :53:51.in danger but they are not going to score in this one. Here comes the

:53:52. > :53:56.sprint. Denmark sticking with it here. Everybody is under pressure as

:53:57. > :53:59.they move into the last ten minutes of racing. Denmark have got to throw

:54:00. > :54:06.the lot at this because they are in fourth place and they are nine

:54:07. > :54:13.points behind the leaders. France are the new leaders. Australia are

:54:14. > :54:17.second on 31, Denmark on 21 in fourth. The Spanish are the least

:54:18. > :54:21.dangerous but the French are seeking to take advantage of anybody going

:54:22. > :54:26.up the roads are they've kept something back. They won't want to

:54:27. > :54:31.work with the Spanish pair. They are happy to follow. This could work

:54:32. > :54:36.very nicely to the French, indeed. There was no chance that Thomas, he

:54:37. > :54:41.is almost backpedalling. It is like watching the last race in the Omnium

:54:42. > :54:45.all over again. It takes some discipline to not work in that kind

:54:46. > :54:49.of situation because they know that they need to keep something back to

:54:50. > :54:54.defend and sure enough, the Danish have gone on the attack and somebody

:54:55. > :55:03.is going to do the chasing and the French have got something left in

:55:04. > :55:16.the wheels. Larsen being followed by Germany. They are the riders at the

:55:17. > :55:23.front, followed by Switzerland. Just 34 laps remaining in this event.

:55:24. > :55:29.Said it would come down to a slog and that is what it is. Everybody is

:55:30. > :55:34.completely spent, trying to find weakness in the opposition. Turning

:55:35. > :55:43.into a good day for France. The Danish have 21 points on the board.

:55:44. > :55:48.Persevering. This is an interesting move. The code tired he is. He is

:55:49. > :56:00.still going but looks absolutely worn out. 25 points left on the

:56:01. > :56:10.board. He is right back in it once more. Australia are only a couple of

:56:11. > :56:16.points off the lead and they are well placed. The French are on the

:56:17. > :56:19.wheel. Ireland are up there as well. Denmark are not going to contest

:56:20. > :56:25.this one. They've not got the legs left. He will have a royal sprint

:56:26. > :56:34.here. He wins it for France. Takes five points. Lead will not change.

:56:35. > :56:38.That is very impressive from the French. They are the strongest. The

:56:39. > :56:43.Australians have not been involved for the last ten laps are so so I

:56:44. > :56:48.thought they would have the upper hand but the French can smell

:56:49. > :57:04.victory. Four points clear of Australia. Great Britain have lost

:57:05. > :57:10.another lap. It is fair to say that their race is all but done. They've

:57:11. > :57:25.never quite got on terms with this one. Ferocious pace was set

:57:26. > :57:32.literally from the first lap. Some great tactical riding from the

:57:33. > :57:39.French. They've known how to let go even when it could cause a

:57:40. > :57:53.breakaway. Denmark still at the front of the race.

:57:54. > :58:06.Still in the action with 25 laps to go. The group looks diminished at

:58:07. > :58:14.the moment. And they look very tired. Mustering the last reserves

:58:15. > :58:30.for the big finish in the last 24 laps. It looks like an elimination

:58:31. > :58:37.race at the moment. I thought that might be the case. If you lose three

:58:38. > :58:47.laps they can pull you out. They are clearing the boards for the main

:58:48. > :59:03.players. They've only got six points. Australia are having to come

:59:04. > :59:07.along way. Dives inside. He had a lot of work to do which would have

:59:08. > :59:17.slowed him up. Throws him into the race. France are perfectly placed

:59:18. > :59:22.and he will be loving this. The big battle is on! As they crossed the

:59:23. > :59:30.line in the French make a change right on the line. The Australians

:59:31. > :59:47.might have got it. All so all of the focus pair between

:59:48. > :59:53.France and Australia. That lead has been nibbled away, just three points

:59:54. > :00:05.now. Australia, Ireland, France and Belgium scoring five, three, two and

:00:06. > :00:10.one. Inside the last two laps. -- ten laps. Around five minutes of

:00:11. > :00:17.effort left. The Spanish trying to salvage something here. The Spanish

:00:18. > :00:19.just reminding them, reminding everybody, are their ability. Out of

:00:20. > :00:28.the running this time around, but they want to finish with a flourish.

:00:29. > :00:34.Denmark are having a stab to go after them, but the big three teams

:00:35. > :00:37.can probably afford to let them go, don't get involved chasing shadows.

:00:38. > :00:40.France will be delighted if points are going up the road, that will

:00:41. > :00:47.suit them very well, thank you very much. Thomas happy to sit on the

:00:48. > :00:54.Australian wheel at the moment. Keeping close tabs on Cameron Meyer.

:00:55. > :01:00.So Spain at the front of the race. Spain, who were the

:01:01. > :01:03.bronze-medallists last year, going to finish outside the medals this

:01:04. > :01:10.time around, and Belgium on the counter. Belgium, remember, in

:01:11. > :01:13.third, seven points behind Australia. The Belgians have gone on

:01:14. > :01:18.the attack and somehow have managed to slip the grasp of Australia and

:01:19. > :01:23.France, who I think are playing brinksmanship at the back and it is

:01:24. > :01:27.quite a serious move, and they have some great company as well in the

:01:28. > :01:34.team from the Netherlands. Everybody getting back on terms slowly but it

:01:35. > :01:38.has put them up the pressure. The kettle racing the Belgium. -- de

:01:39. > :01:47.Ketele racing the Belgium. It was a missed change their as Niklas Larsen

:01:48. > :01:51.tried to throw it into Von Folsach. A right old West, re-accelerating

:01:52. > :01:59.your own mass is a tough thing to do in this race. It is the equivalent

:02:00. > :02:04.of dropping the baton in a relay and then having to go back and pick it

:02:05. > :02:10.up. Brands timed that one beautifully again to finish in front

:02:11. > :02:13.of the Belgians. And straight on the attack and why not? The Belgians

:02:14. > :02:17.have been working hard trying to make a break and have been instantly

:02:18. > :02:23.counted and found themselves on the rack by France, inside the last ten

:02:24. > :02:30.laps. Air France pushing hard to ensure they take this world title.

:02:31. > :02:33.The closing laps of this man's madison, the end of the 2017 world

:02:34. > :02:39.track cycling Championships very much insight now. They are piling on

:02:40. > :02:43.the pressure with seven laps to go. Belgium have gone with them but they

:02:44. > :02:46.are not the biggest threat. The Australians are out of it at the

:02:47. > :02:54.moment, so France are just driving for gold. Australia have to claw

:02:55. > :02:57.their way back in. Australia on the front, Belgium, France, Ireland.

:02:58. > :03:02.Very slow change from Switzerland, an awful change, which has enabled

:03:03. > :03:07.Australia to draw level with them. About to come back together with the

:03:08. > :03:10.French. That is interesting, the French have chosen to stop the chase

:03:11. > :03:14.and after that big effort, they have now put themselves back into the

:03:15. > :03:19.group with Australia. And I think they are just going to try and sit

:03:20. > :03:27.on the Australians' wheel. They have a considerable buffer there, they

:03:28. > :03:34.need to stay with them. Callum Scotson takes over from Cameron

:03:35. > :03:38.Meyer. The last kilometre of the race about to start, about a minute

:03:39. > :03:41.of racing left and Australia desperate to make the move, but

:03:42. > :03:46.France now that is the only wheel they have got to watch. And what

:03:47. > :03:51.should they are, very closely. Morgan Janevski onto the wheel of

:03:52. > :03:55.Callum Scotson. Burning all the matches he has got left to claw his

:03:56. > :04:01.way clear of everyone. Ireland are hanging onto that little trio, good

:04:02. > :04:04.ride from Mark Downey. The team from Australia also protecting the silver

:04:05. > :04:07.medal position because Belgium already five minutes behind -- five

:04:08. > :04:12.points behind and there are double points on offer on this last lap.

:04:13. > :04:18.But the gold medal looks like it is heading for France. They will take

:04:19. > :04:23.the bell, Spain are not going to be a factor, all eyes on Australia and

:04:24. > :04:27.France and it is Cameron Meyer leading out Benjamin Thomas of

:04:28. > :04:32.France and Thomas sitting on by a's wheel. He will try and compass Tim

:04:33. > :04:39.and Cameron Meyer will strain every sinew... Cameron Meyer crosses the

:04:40. > :04:46.line just in front of the French. But the world title will belong to

:04:47. > :04:51.France, to Benjamin Thomas, who is a world champion for the second time

:04:52. > :04:54.in the space of 24 hours. This time he has a team-mate alongside him,

:04:55. > :05:08.Morgan can ease give. It is the fourth time Denise Key has one world

:05:09. > :05:13.track title -- please ... CLARE BALDING: and that moves

:05:14. > :05:19.Frantsev to second place on the final medal table, Australia out in

:05:20. > :05:24.front by virtue of five silver medals and Great Britain in fourth

:05:25. > :05:27.with Germany. From an international point of view, Chris, 15 different

:05:28. > :05:34.nations winning medals and how much in terms of quality, G think it was?

:05:35. > :05:38.I think it was an excellent World Championships, great spread of

:05:39. > :05:41.talent across the broad. Standout performances, Chloe Dygert in the

:05:42. > :05:48.women's pursued, and the team pursuit. Wang was a very popular win

:05:49. > :05:52.for Malaysia. He is the biggest sports star in Malaysia right now,

:05:53. > :05:56.so fantastic for him, ten years trying to win that rainbow jersey.

:05:57. > :06:01.The sport of track cycling, it is great to see the spread of medals.

:06:02. > :06:04.From a GB perspective, it is nice when we are top of the table but we

:06:05. > :06:09.have a very young team and they did very well. Jo, what you think, on

:06:10. > :06:19.the return of medals to those who went? Good, bad, medium? I am really

:06:20. > :06:23.pleased. We had Katie and El there is Olympic champions, we had a goal,

:06:24. > :06:27.a couple of silvers, a personal best by Ellie Dickinson in the individual

:06:28. > :06:35.pursuit, a five second PB by the young girls in the team pursuit, so

:06:36. > :06:40.I -- some really positive performances, Ryan Owens to get

:06:41. > :06:44.fourth in the sprint and the men's keirin team, really positive. Given

:06:45. > :06:50.that the big guns are missing. Chris Latham with the only medal as far as

:06:51. > :06:55.the men are concerned, is that a worry? I wouldn't say it is a worry,

:06:56. > :06:59.I would say it is a good week for the women's endurance team, we

:07:00. > :07:04.should celebrate that rather than criticise other people and it is our

:07:05. > :07:09.first World Championships at the Olympics and everyone wants to win

:07:10. > :07:12.the races they riding, and you have to look at it in terms of the

:07:13. > :07:16.four-year cycle, where your preparation is, what needs to be

:07:17. > :07:20.done, go away, study the races and competition and GB will be back

:07:21. > :07:25.fighting. Let's get the assessment of those in charge, Stephen Park the

:07:26. > :07:29.new performance director and first, the head coach Ian Darke.

:07:30. > :07:33.That brings the curtain down on the World Championships, we couldn't

:07:34. > :07:36.finish as we did in London with a Wiggins and Cavendish finale but

:07:37. > :07:43.what has been your assessment of the championships? I would say in terms

:07:44. > :07:45.of performance, mixed. We have had some really good performances from

:07:46. > :07:50.some of the younger, developing riders and I was really pleased to

:07:51. > :08:02.see, given the freedom we kind of handed Katie and El the -- over

:08:03. > :08:05.their programmes of the winter, and the future of the omnium and the

:08:06. > :08:08.madison for the Olympics, the scratch races, the performances we

:08:09. > :08:14.saw were fantastic and they were my standout performances. If we look at

:08:15. > :08:18.the young sprint team, the young women's pursuit in, plenty of

:08:19. > :08:23.potential. If we were going to look at one particular area that perhaps

:08:24. > :08:27.hasn't come through, it will be the women's sprint programme. Have you

:08:28. > :08:31.got a plan in place? There is still plenty to look at. I think the men's

:08:32. > :08:35.endurance side was a touch underpowered and the women's sprint.

:08:36. > :08:38.We have Ed Clancy at home following a road programme with a bigger

:08:39. > :08:43.objective in mind towards Tokyo, we have Becky James still pondering her

:08:44. > :08:46.future. There are riders out there that may still have plenty to offer

:08:47. > :08:49.the programme and we have a good clutch of young ones coming through,

:08:50. > :08:53.some of which weren't quite ready for this event but we will hopefully

:08:54. > :08:56.see more of them in the future. When you see some of the criticism

:08:57. > :09:01.levelled averages cycling over the last few months and then you come in

:09:02. > :09:04.and see particularly two women taking gold medals and a rainbow

:09:05. > :09:12.jerseys, due feel you have responded in some way? I think we are carrying

:09:13. > :09:17.on as normal, and what people's perception of normal might be maybe

:09:18. > :09:23.buyers by media or allegations. For us, it is business as usual. I think

:09:24. > :09:28.everyone is able to see we have a great supporting, committed team

:09:29. > :09:34.behind the athletes and a lot of freedom afforded to the athletes in

:09:35. > :09:38.terms of their programme, so it is hard to say much more than that, it

:09:39. > :09:43.is business as usual and we are just turning up doing as best as we

:09:44. > :09:45.possibly can day in, day out. Certainly there have been some

:09:46. > :09:51.individuals who have made cases were a lack of support for women's

:09:52. > :09:55.cycling but more recently, we have seen athletes stepping forward and

:09:56. > :09:58.saying it is not their experiences. So not wanting to dismiss the

:09:59. > :10:03.experience of others, there is clearly mixed opinion. This week,

:10:04. > :10:08.what I have seen, is a group of athletes being supported, male or

:10:09. > :10:11.female and as we go forward, so many great opportunities. We have done

:10:12. > :10:17.well in women's events here but I think the level of support athletes

:10:18. > :10:21.have received has been consistent, there is nothing I have seen this

:10:22. > :10:25.week that would give me any cause for concern in that regard. And the

:10:26. > :10:28.cyclist themselves deserve even more credit, and the coaching staff, of

:10:29. > :10:32.being able to perform under the scrutiny they have faced. The

:10:33. > :10:38.independent review is due out in May and then, do you think that is time

:10:39. > :10:42.to close that chapter and move on? I hope so, I hope British cycling is

:10:43. > :10:45.pre-empting the review. They have already taken the step to try and

:10:46. > :10:50.make incremental improvements across the board to support the athletes.

:10:51. > :10:53.It is a fantastic organisation for support currently but they are

:10:54. > :10:56.looking for ways to improve in the future and like Stephen Park said,

:10:57. > :11:00.they are not dismissing any of the claims that have come forward.

:11:01. > :11:03.Personally, I would like to have seen more riders in the team

:11:04. > :11:08.contribute to the independent review, not just the ones that had

:11:09. > :11:12.issues with the Federation. You break out of your ratings are you go

:11:13. > :11:16.to London to meet of the panel, when you are focusing on training but at

:11:17. > :11:21.the same time, it is important for the independent review to get a

:11:22. > :11:28.balanced perspective. Did you contribute to it? I didn't. Would

:11:29. > :11:31.you have had any complaint? I had an e-mail in June last year and David

:11:32. > :11:34.ten seconds of my attention and that was that until a couple of months

:11:35. > :11:38.ago, when the findings are being late and I put my hands up and say I

:11:39. > :11:44.made a mistake by not giving it more of my attention, but in late June

:11:45. > :11:49.2016, my focus was on Rio. What would you have said if you could? I

:11:50. > :11:52.would give a balanced reflection of my experiences. I personally think

:11:53. > :11:56.that as a rider who has had most of my success in the team pursuit, we

:11:57. > :11:59.wouldn't have been able to perform so well as a team without the system

:12:00. > :12:04.supporting women, because if you have one standout rider, they can go

:12:05. > :12:07.out and win stuff that you need a good support system to nurture

:12:08. > :12:11.talent. I was talent spotted at school and feel like I wouldn't have

:12:12. > :12:16.gone through my journey and copper medals I have got of the programme

:12:17. > :12:19.had supported me, so I would obviously take all of the accusation

:12:20. > :12:26.seriously and I think the organisation is really keen to

:12:27. > :12:29.improve and strive for perfection, of course, but I have been very

:12:30. > :12:33.successful, so I am very happy. There is no better way to respond

:12:34. > :12:37.than by success and we have certainly had that at the World

:12:38. > :12:40.Championships but also, we have seen on the podium, happy, smiling,

:12:41. > :12:46.emotional faces and I think that does more good than anything. Sport

:12:47. > :12:49.next weekend, if you tune in on Saturday, you can enjoy gymnastics,

:12:50. > :12:58.better Weddle and Matt Baker presenting, it starts on Friday with

:12:59. > :13:04.coverage on the Red Button. And the Fed cup, oh my word, this is getting

:13:05. > :13:08.to a great stage, because if Great Britain beat Romania, they will win

:13:09. > :13:12.a place in the world group two and Anna Keothavong, her first year as

:13:13. > :13:18.captain, Simona Halep against Johanna Konta will be an absolute

:13:19. > :13:24.highlight of that. Huge thanks to our team out in Hong Kong, Simon

:13:25. > :13:28.Brotherton, Chris Boardman, Joanna Rowsell-Shand and Sir Chris Hoy and

:13:29. > :13:30.most of all, thanks to Elinor Barker and Katie Archibald are showing us

:13:31. > :13:37.that at the end of the rainbow, they can indeed be a pot of gold.

:13:38. > :14:01.It is gold for Katie Archibald! Elinor Barker and Emily Nelson have

:14:02. > :14:02.ridden so well. Elinor Barker is the champion of
