:06:42. > :06:45.forward to it or do you treat it with a certain amount of bread? I
:06:46. > :06:49.am. It was a really difficult decision to make and it took me a
:06:50. > :06:53.long time to make it. I think for a while deep down I knew I was done as

:07:08. > :07:12.something more. Add the Olympic pursuit for Tokyo, that would have
:07:13. > :07:16.motivated me... But to go out and try new things... When I first had

:07:23. > :07:26.I had to call it the R word, I couldn't actually say I want to
:07:27. > :07:30.retire! That was a step too far. It took a while to come to terms with
:07:31. > :07:33.the idea of not being an athlete and not preparing for an Olympic Games
:07:34. > :07:39.and it was incredibly difficult. I'm currently applying to university to
:07:40. > :07:44.start in September. Great, to study? Physiology. Which has a nice link to

:07:48. > :07:50.more taught from the point of view of physical activity for health,
:07:51. > :07:55.using physical activity for things like obesity and diabetes. A
:07:56. > :07:58.different perspective. The science is the same but it is down to how
:07:59. > :08:01.you apply it and it could apply across the board. I think it will be
:08:02. > :08:07.an interesting degree for me, something I'm very interested in.
:08:08. > :08:10.Ever since I left school, I had a levels in biology, physics and
:08:11. > :08:14.maths, I was very much a scientist back then and now I can go and study

:08:19. > :08:23.sport. Brilliant. We're thrilled to have your intellect here as well as
:08:24. > :08:30.your knowledge of cycling. Here are the athletes we should be watching
:08:31. > :08:36.out for. In the men's team sport, the average age of our team is 20.
:08:37. > :08:40.They took gold in the Glasgow World Cup last November. No British
:08:41. > :08:44.representation in the women's team sprint. The dominant side looked to
:08:45. > :08:50.be China, they are the Olympic champions. Elinor Barker, who won
:08:51. > :08:54.gold in the team pursuit in Rio, is concentrating on individual events
:08:55. > :09:00.here. We will see her in the women's scratch today. And it is the first
:09:01. > :09:03.round of the men's team pursuit. Andy Tennant at 30 is the senior
:09:04. > :09:09.member of the team and he just missed out on the Olympic Games.
:09:10. > :09:12.Determined to make his mark here. The women's sprinting scene in
:09:13. > :09:15.Britain, we will talk about it in a second but if you wanted get in

:09:20. > :09:23.tips on fitness or mental health from these two, use everything they
:09:24. > :09:27.know. But obviously also questions about I cling or team members,
:09:28. > :09:31.anything you want just via our way. Becky James is taking a break and
:09:32. > :09:35.there's only one British female sprinter out in Hong Kong and that
:09:36. > :09:39.is Katy Marchant. Are we looking at a bit of a problem in British sprint
:09:40. > :09:43.cycling at the moment? I don't think so, you look at Vickie Williamson
:09:44. > :09:47.who is thankfully finally getting back on her bike after a horrific
:09:48. > :09:51.crash at the sixth day in Rotterdam over a year ago now. She is well on
:09:52. > :09:55.her way to making her way back into the team. We have some really
:09:56. > :10:05.talented young riders snapping at their heels of Katy but at the
:10:06. > :10:08.moment Katy is focusing on the Kieren. I don't Inc is any crisis
:10:09. > :10:12.intends of the future but there is still work to be done. In terms of
:10:13. > :10:16.how you gel well, and it is always exciting watching the team sprint,
:10:17. > :10:22.for the women it is a team of two rather than three. Jo, I will just
:10:23. > :10:27.get your view on this as well, the strength of the teams that are
:10:28. > :10:30.lining up for this. In the women's team sprint, yeah, I think China
:10:31. > :10:33.will probably be the favourites, they are the Olympic champions.
:10:34. > :10:37.Russia were the world champions from this time last year but I think that
:10:38. > :10:41.is because China were disqualified in the final. I think Russia and
:10:42. > :10:45.China are the big two favourites here. I would love to see Team GB
:10:46. > :10:48.back in the mix but like Chris says, there are a view riders who have
:10:49. > :10:52.unfortunately had injuries or something, that will not be
:10:53. > :10:55.competing in this winter. But it is something that excites me going
:10:56. > :10:59.forward and I personally would like to see the event go to three riders
:11:00. > :11:02.and three laps rather than two. This is the only event now where there is
:11:03. > :11:06.not equality between men and women in terms of the number of riders in
:11:07. > :11:10.the team, so for me that is the last step. This event has been
:11:11. > :11:19.progressing really well since it has been on the programme. The gap has
:11:20. > :11:23.been getting lower and lower so I would like to see it equal out on
:11:24. > :11:28.three, so that is my thing. Yes, absolutely. I think we're all
:11:29. > :11:31.nodding in agreement. Let's let the commentators take it away.
:11:32. > :11:38.COMMENTATOR: Hello, everyone. Thank you and welcome to this futuristic
:11:39. > :11:42.velodrome here in Hong Kong, just eight short Drive away from the
:11:43. > :11:47.centre of the city, and we are just in time for the fourth race in this
:11:48. > :11:54.women's team sprint qualifying. Australia, Stephanie Morton entire
:11:55. > :11:58.Lee McCulloch. The Australians we will be watching here, they are one
:11:59. > :12:03.of the traditional forces in this event, particularly when Anna Meares
:12:04. > :12:15.was paired with Thirimanne colour. That is a few years ago now and they
:12:16. > :12:24.are not one of the big favourites. It is a pretty decent time, the new
:12:25. > :12:29.fastest one, 32.785, for Australia. We have already seen how fast the
:12:30. > :12:34.men's team pursuit was. A pretty special performance and you often
:12:35. > :12:40.find that a good performance sort of goes through the whole team. I
:12:41. > :12:46.suppose it's not surprising that the Australian sprinters are also really
:12:47. > :12:48.raising their game here. Often the case for the Australians posed
:12:49. > :12:54.Olympic Games, they tend to perform well the year after an Olympics. I
:12:55. > :12:57.suspect that here in Hong Kong it will be no different. It's
:12:58. > :12:59.interesting, isn't it, Chris, that different countries have very
:13:00. > :13:03.different ideas about how to prepare? Many of them treat the
:13:04. > :13:09.World Championships as seriously as the Olympic Games. Of course, they
:13:10. > :13:13.are World Championships, so so you should come about their funding is
:13:14. > :13:16.not just dependent on how you do in the Olympic Games. That may be a
:13:17. > :13:21.reason why the British team approach things slightly differently.
:13:22. > :13:26.Possibly. To do with the change of funding and also culturally of
:13:27. > :13:29.course. But they do tend to perform well very consistently. We've got
:13:30. > :13:33.used to the British team who do tackle it in a very different way,
:13:34. > :13:37.it's all about the Olympic Games, tipping off after that major
:13:38. > :13:40.competition. That is a cycle we have seen repeated three times now. I
:13:41. > :13:44.don't want to put too much pressure on them but we're expecting to see
:13:45. > :13:48.good solid performances. This is the one event where there is no British
:13:49. > :13:54.interest, but it is a really strong field. Joanna was talking before
:13:55. > :13:58.about China, the Olympic champions, and also Russia, the defending world
:13:59. > :14:02.champions. We should not forget too Germany and that brilliant pairing
:14:03. > :14:18.from any years now, Kristina Vogel, who is a world and Olympic champion,
:14:19. > :14:22.and Miriam Welte. They are never far away. Great talents in world track
:14:23. > :14:26.cycling. They are one of the real crowd pleaser is as well, one of the
:14:27. > :14:29.real characters of the sport. Incredibly consistent and so are the
:14:30. > :14:33.Chinese pair, but mistakes have been made as we heard alluded to earlier
:14:34. > :14:37.in World Championships. The rules for this event have been tidied up a
:14:38. > :14:41.bit now, making it a lot easier for riders to stop people being
:14:42. > :14:44.relegated, because that is not what anybody wants to see. It's all about
:14:45. > :14:46.that front wheel, they can't pass before the first line. Just to let
:14:47. > :15:10.you know that China have got Junhong Lin racing and
:15:11. > :15:18.Shuang Guo. A little bit messy Art of the blocks. The German pair
:15:19. > :15:24.cleanly away. This is a strong finish now. Kristina Vogel powers
:15:25. > :15:29.over the line. New fastest time and China way out of it. China's time is
:15:30. > :15:35.a long way back and that has now come up as the third quickest time,
:15:36. > :15:42.but they were some considerable distance behind Germany. Germany
:15:43. > :15:47.32.356. When you consider that the world record is 32 dead, that is
:15:48. > :15:52.really a very respectable ride. They have set themselves out as being the
:15:53. > :15:57.team to beat. So consistent and .3 of a second clear of Australia at
:15:58. > :16:02.the moment. Coming into this, perhaps no great surprise. Kristina
:16:03. > :16:04.Vogel has been in very good form over the winter track system,
:16:05. > :16:16.winning the Kieren and the sprint in Los Angeles and she won the
:16:17. > :16:21.individual sprint as well in Cali. In stark contrast to many Olympic
:16:22. > :16:24.champions, Kristina Vogel deciding to keep racing through and she has
:16:25. > :16:28.kept that going. Riders deal with the pressure in different ways. Some
:16:29. > :16:31.see the competition as an adventure and the result is just a symptom of
:16:32. > :16:35.doing something they want to do. Others really build up on the result
:16:36. > :16:40.and it's all about that result, there is a lot of pressure and they
:16:41. > :16:45.need to get away afterwards. So we see a real disparity in performances
:16:46. > :16:48.in this post-Olympic period. We have got four gold medallists on the
:16:49. > :16:52.track in the Great Britain squad including Katie Archibald and Elinor
:16:53. > :16:56.Barker. We will see them in different events to those at which
:16:57. > :17:01.they were involved in in Rio. A busman's holiday. They are still on
:17:02. > :17:07.the track but just getting the mental break of avoiding an event --
:17:08. > :17:22.of doing a different event. Next on the track, Russia,
:17:23. > :17:36.. Against Spain. Don't forget this is a three round competition and
:17:37. > :17:43.this is the qualifying phase which will see them go through to the top
:17:44. > :17:46.eight first will ride against eighth, second against seventh. The
:17:47. > :17:51.better ride you perform now, the easier ride you get through and the
:17:52. > :17:58.two fastest winners contest the gold. 12 teams in this qualifying
:17:59. > :18:04.round and eight of them will go through. I way they go. Let's see
:18:05. > :18:13.what kind of form the Russian pairing have brought here to these
:18:14. > :18:25.championships. Voianova Leading the way on lap one.
:18:26. > :18:32.Shmeleva takes over for the final lap. No surprise to see Spain
:18:33. > :18:36.trailing at this point. Here we come up towards the line and their time
:18:37. > :18:42.was 32.962, well down on the time set by Germany. These are big gaps
:18:43. > :18:48.in a competition like this, which can be decided by hundreds or even
:18:49. > :18:55.thousands of a second. The German team are going to be tough to beat.
:18:56. > :18:58.So, Germany fastest qualifiers ahead of Australia, Russia and China.
:18:59. > :19:04.Spain, Netherlands, Canada and Colombia also going through. We will
:19:05. > :19:08.lose Mexico, Korea, Italy and India. We're just waiting for official
:19:09. > :19:12.confirmation of that. But interesting to note that from what
:19:13. > :19:17.we've seen so far, it is Germany who have the real speed in their legs
:19:18. > :19:20.that this particular moment in time. Good to see Australia as well coming
:19:21. > :19:24.back in this particular event, because they were dominant a couple
:19:25. > :19:36.of years ago, they won the world title three years in a row. And as
:19:37. > :19:40.Daria Shmeleva, a former junior champion, just winds down, there is
:19:41. > :19:45.the confirmation of the qualifiers in the women's team sprint.
:19:46. > :19:51.COMMENTATOR: Germany out in front. Australia one of the countries you
:19:52. > :20:03.were saying had a lot to prove after Rio. With the retirement of Anna
:20:04. > :20:13.Meares, it has given Carla McCulloch the chance to show her skill. News
:20:14. > :20:20.through recently that Mark Cavendish has been diagnosed with glandular
:20:21. > :20:26.fever. Glandular fever is going to knock him out for a while, isn't it?
:20:27. > :20:31.Jeff, that's pretty serious. The risk is that you try and get back
:20:32. > :20:36.too soon and it extends the time you will be laid off for. I'm sure he
:20:37. > :20:40.will get the best of ice on that but it is frustrating, he has still got
:20:41. > :20:42.a lot left to achieve, he wants to win the highest number of stages
:20:43. > :20:46.ever in the Tour de France and that will certainly hamper his
:20:47. > :20:56.preparation. Let's concentrate on the qualifying for the men's team
:20:57. > :21:00.sprint but that team of Heinz and Callum Skinner, Callum is the early
:21:01. > :21:04.one at the World Championship 's and he is focusing on individual events.
:21:05. > :21:12.It is a relatively new line-up, they are pretty exciting. Let's hear from
:21:13. > :21:17.these new names. As a team, we're really close, we're really good
:21:18. > :21:21.friends off the track as well. We'll came onto the Academy programme
:21:22. > :21:27.around the same time. We were looking at a five-year goal, Tokyo
:21:28. > :21:33.and then anything before that would be like a bonus. Obviously we want
:21:34. > :21:36.to go to win. We are a young team and we have to give our best
:21:37. > :21:46.performance and just see where that puts us. It can stand us in good
:21:47. > :21:54.stead. Fantastic riding and the youth put in a fantastic
:21:55. > :21:58.performance! We would like to go top five. If you go top five, you're
:21:59. > :22:05.always going to be vying for a medal. It's a great record at any
:22:06. > :22:08.level. Coming from their age through the Academy process together. I'm
:22:09. > :22:13.really excited to see what those guys can do on the big stage. It is
:22:14. > :22:18.very much their moment and how will they cope with it? Jack Carlin on
:22:19. > :22:22.the left and that is Elinor Barker on the right. We will see her later
:22:23. > :22:25.on in the scratch race. Chris, I started to ask you this but we
:22:26. > :22:29.didn't have time to hear your answer, what is the secret to
:22:30. > :22:32.gelling in the sprint competition. As a team, each rider has a very
:22:33. > :22:37.different job to do, very different skills. The starter has to be an
:22:38. > :22:40.exceptional rider accelerating the team up to a good pace. Number two
:22:41. > :22:46.had to have the ability to soak up the start but deliver a strong lap
:22:47. > :22:49.for the final person to hang on to the end. It is more than just
:22:50. > :22:53.physical attributes, they are all good friends, they get on well and
:22:54. > :22:56.they gel as a unit. It's very exciting for them just now, they are
:22:57. > :23:02.on an upward Sharjah rhetoric and who knows how far they can go? -- an
:23:03. > :23:05.upward trajectory. Let's have a look at Canada. The qualifying has
:23:06. > :23:11.started but very early stages. Chris, talk us through what happens
:23:12. > :23:21.here. Oh dear oh dear oh dear, nightmare. A lot of the holder
:23:22. > :23:27.uppers are not that experienced. They're not from your team, they're
:23:28. > :23:33.from the venue? That's right. A lot of the guys are big guys, 90
:23:34. > :23:39.kilograms class and they have heavy bikes, so it can happen. Sometimes
:23:40. > :23:43.it happens like dominoes, all six riders go down, not ideal when
:23:44. > :23:47.you're about to start the race. These wheels are also very fragile
:23:48. > :23:51.for lateral impact. They are designed very strong. You could
:23:52. > :23:56.almost push your finger through that we'll if you hit it hard enough, so
:23:57. > :24:04.there is a risk of damaging that ?3000 wheel. Is that it, I Canada
:24:05. > :24:07.how? No, they get a restart because it wasn't their fault. But
:24:08. > :24:15.psychologically it can be a distraction.
:24:16. > :24:23.COMMENTATOR: They were the first two teams to go, Clare, actually. There
:24:24. > :24:33.was a good story, it wasn't the rider who fell but a chap... Patrice
:24:34. > :24:36.St Louis Pivin is one of the riders and he only set foot in the
:24:37. > :24:39.velodrome for the first time 30 months ago, he was a power lifter
:24:40. > :24:43.and one of the other riders suggested he tried out a training
:24:44. > :24:48.camp and clearly it went rather well! Away. Cross-fertilisation I
:24:49. > :24:53.believe is the term applied from going from one sport to another in
:24:54. > :25:00.the sporting world, but it's actually a really good idea to take
:25:01. > :25:03.people with the basic abilities and most importantly a desire to do it,
:25:04. > :25:09.and give them the opportunity to try something different.
:25:10. > :25:18.And experienced rider for the Netherlands, five times a world
:25:19. > :25:31.champion on the track and three times on the sprint. Not for a
:25:32. > :25:36.while, though. Nils Van't Hoenderdaal for the Netherlands.
:25:37. > :25:41.Over half a second that of Colombia at this point. Of course it's all
:25:42. > :25:47.about setting the time but it gives us an indicator of the blistering
:25:48. > :25:54.pace being set here. Really quick bite Jeffrey Hoogland now. He leaves
:25:55. > :25:57.it at the end and Theo Bos is an round three for the Netherlands.
:25:58. > :26:01.Heading into the autumn of his career now, back on track in the
:26:02. > :26:09.last year or so. Powering around the track at the bottom of this bowl as
:26:10. > :26:13.he comes over the line in 43.970, nearly 43 hundredth of a second
:26:14. > :26:16.quicker than the time on the other track from Colombia but it is all
:26:17. > :26:21.about the time, they're not strictly trying to knock out the team on the
:26:22. > :26:24.other side. Labouring a bit. You could see he was shaking his head,
:26:25. > :26:35.wasn't happy with that. Nicely out of the gate. Respectable start there
:26:36. > :26:40.by any measure. And so, so important to get out of the gate quickly in
:26:41. > :26:43.this event. It doesn't win you the race but it can certainly lose it
:26:44. > :26:46.for you. It's almost impossible to pick up the pace if you are not
:26:47. > :26:50.thrown into this race at a high-speed. One of the key things
:26:51. > :26:54.about this race in the last for five years is how they keep tweaking the
:26:55. > :26:58.rules to adjust them in terms of the changeover. That is what has proven
:26:59. > :27:02.to be the difficult part of the race. It's where people have
:27:03. > :27:06.qualified on a berry regular basis and now they will do probably what
:27:07. > :27:09.that to start with, it's all about the front wheel crossing the line.
:27:10. > :27:15.Basically your counterparts can't cross over the line before you do.
:27:16. > :27:19.Simple as that. The front rider has got 15 metres to get out of the way,
:27:20. > :27:24.and out of the way is determined by the red line on the track. We've got
:27:25. > :27:30.some excellent teams to come and in the seventh hit of eight will be
:27:31. > :27:34.Germany and Great Britain. The last two Howell, New Zealand, the
:27:35. > :27:36.defending champions, and Poland, as well. But at the moment we are
:27:37. > :27:51.watching Japan, where Kazunari Watanabe is
:27:52. > :28:06.the most experienced rider in their team. A real wobble there by the
:28:07. > :28:10.Japanese team. Well off the track, and that is going to cost probably a
:28:11. > :28:16.tenth of a second or more and in an event like this that can be
:28:17. > :28:22.absolutely critical. Yoshitaku Nagasako leading the way on job --
:28:23. > :28:30.that one for Japan commit his job is done. It is Yudai Nitta now for the
:28:31. > :28:35.Japanese team. Not getting a time up for Japan at the moment, I think
:28:36. > :28:48.perhaps riding off the track caused a bit of a problem. Jose
:28:49. > :28:56.Marino for Spain... Japan with the second fastest time so far. Good
:28:57. > :29:00.recovery at the end. Still a decent start, under 18 seconds for that
:29:01. > :29:11.opening lap, but a better finish, I think. Well, had the experience and
:29:12. > :29:17.the staying power to stay in there. -- Watanabe had the experience and
:29:18. > :29:21.the staying power. You appreciate the timing of that effort, they
:29:22. > :29:24.throw their weight back and forward in anticipation of that gate
:29:25. > :29:35.opening. Get it slightly wrong and the wheels can snatch a bit. That is
:29:36. > :29:41.what can happen. But recovered well. The medals will be decided tonight
:29:42. > :29:47.in both the men's and women's team sprint, but still to go out onto the
:29:48. > :29:53.track in the next few minutes. Next up will be the Czech Republic and
:29:54. > :30:00.China. Here's confirmation of the standings in the clubhouse. The
:30:01. > :30:04.Netherlands the quickest up to now but many of those teams will be
:30:05. > :30:18.knocked down the leaderboard in the next few minutes. Tomas Babek, for
:30:19. > :30:34.Czech Republic. Hush around the velodrome. Away they
:30:35. > :30:38.go. It the might be the shape of the track actually pushing people down a
:30:39. > :30:44.little bit here. It is a bowl-shaped track we've heard about. It was
:30:45. > :30:48.actually quite quick, in the team pursuit qualification earlier today.
:30:49. > :30:54.We'll have to see if it is the same for the team sprint. China
:30:55. > :30:57.predictably the fastest so far. Many of the riders will be familiar with
:30:58. > :31:01.this track. They had a World Cup meeting here last year. The track
:31:02. > :31:06.was actually built in 2013. It's not like Rio where they basically turned
:31:07. > :31:17.up and rode on it the day before the Olympics started. They're now coming
:31:18. > :31:22.around for the Czech Republic. Sojka there. And China's time will be the
:31:23. > :31:33.fastest so far. Just the quickest by about a tenth of a second.
:31:34. > :31:38.Disappeared off the computer for a moment. Home advantage, always makes
:31:39. > :31:47.the World Championships that little Morabito important. A very
:31:48. > :31:53.respectable performance from them. -- a little bit more important. When
:31:54. > :31:57.you are trying to drive out the power it takes self-discipline to
:31:58. > :32:02.hold the position and not become more upright to get some more
:32:03. > :32:27.powerout. You can see them on the back
:32:28. > :32:33.straight. And Belarus now, starting near us.
:32:34. > :32:45.But here are the Australians. Matthew glat zerl World Champion in
:32:46. > :32:49.2012 -- Matthew Glaetzer. The Commonwealth keirin champion, in
:32:50. > :32:56.good form, too. Jacob Schmidt with him. Schmidt a former two-time World
:32:57. > :33:01.Champion and Nathan heart a common wealth games' bronze medallist. --
:33:02. > :33:06.Nathan Hart. Away they G Australia fourth in the Olympics. And we have
:33:07. > :33:13.a false start as you can see. We'll wait for the replay but it was the
:33:14. > :33:18.starting rider. The Australians, haven't stopped here. That's
:33:19. > :33:29.interesting. Australia are still piling around the track. Looking to
:33:30. > :33:33.set their time. The familiar figurer of Glaetzer there on the start. He
:33:34. > :33:39.is familiar. His body position. Mouth gaping wide open. Still second
:33:40. > :33:42.fastest. Well hoping for a good finish here and it looks as if
:33:43. > :33:47.that's what they are going to get. Here coming up to the line, Jacob
:33:48. > :33:52.Schmidt for Australia, emptying the tank there. 44.136 for Australia.
:33:53. > :33:57.Third quickest time, unofficially. Waiting for that to come up on the
:33:58. > :34:01.screen. Belarus are saying - we do get another go, don't we? They do,
:34:02. > :34:08.they get another start regardless of the cause of the mishap. But the
:34:09. > :34:13.Australians did well to keep their composure. Normally there is a gun
:34:14. > :34:16.fired and, so, they are well within their right. They have no problems
:34:17. > :34:19.to keep going but often they are distracted. What happened here, do
:34:20. > :34:24.you think maybe the gate didn't let go of the rider in time, an electron
:34:25. > :34:28.malfunction with the gate? Our camera shot was a little bit close
:34:29. > :34:33.up for us to be able to see there. He has It was just on head and
:34:34. > :34:35.shoulders. They will go at the end, Belarus. They will have to wait
:34:36. > :34:40.until everyone else has had their ride now, I think. They'll have to
:34:41. > :34:44.go and warm down. And they will be on their own. Meanwhile, the
:34:45. > :34:52.Australians, oh, almost a false start there. The first rider must
:34:53. > :34:56.lead away. A well-drilled team. A respectable ride but I suspect he
:34:57. > :35:00.will be a little bit disappointed with that to be honest. I have to
:35:01. > :35:05.say we wandered down by the Australian pit a little earlier and
:35:06. > :35:08.spoke to Gary there, and saw them all sitting there, getting prepared
:35:09. > :35:11.and also, from what we have seen so far, Australia are all business,
:35:12. > :35:17.aren't they, here at these Championships? Yes, it is a pattern
:35:18. > :35:21.we have seen in past years, in performing post Olympic Games. They
:35:22. > :35:24.enjoy competition. They are consistent throughout the Olympic
:35:25. > :35:29.cycle, the four-year psychle. Often if they've had a disappointment at
:35:30. > :35:33.World Championships, ory at Olympic Games they tend to take that out at
:35:34. > :35:39.the worlds. They are looking sharp here. Early days I know in this
:35:40. > :35:43.five-day World Championship. A slight delay because of that mishap
:35:44. > :35:48.for Belarus but they'll have their chance to ride shortly. Here we go
:35:49. > :36:02.with France. A young team for last. -- a young team for France. Up a
:36:03. > :36:18.against them Russia. ! Well I'm not sure the Beard is the
:36:19. > :36:24.most aero dynamic thing you could have for an event like this. Well,
:36:25. > :36:28.this young French squad were second in the World Cup meeting in
:36:29. > :36:30.November. Can they translate that level of performance to here in the
:36:31. > :36:33.big change in the World Championships? Leading the way for
:36:34. > :37:09.France is Edelin. The fist rider. on this first lap is... Up towards
:37:10. > :37:17.the men what have they got in their legs? We are about to find out. Less
:37:18. > :37:22.than 50 m to go, over the line they come and France 43.390. Puts them in
:37:23. > :37:27.the lead. So they'll be pretty comfortable with that. Facial hair
:37:28. > :37:31.or not. Well they look happy with that, certainly. No surprise. France
:37:32. > :37:36.have been one of the powerhouse force a long time in World Frack
:37:37. > :37:40.Cycling. We are seeing the next generation of their riders coming
:37:41. > :37:48.through as well. -- World Track Cycling. They will be pleased with
:37:49. > :37:52.that one. They were the fastest out of the blocks, 17.6 their opening
:37:53. > :37:58.lap - they weren't the fastest out of the blocks. Only fifth fastest
:37:59. > :38:03.but what a finishing lap. They have set the time to beat. It's not
:38:04. > :38:08.always about the actual lap time. That's a really important element to
:38:09. > :38:14.this event. It's about the delivery speed. So if there is part of your
:38:15. > :38:18.lap where you are sling shotting the next rider in. And it is so
:38:19. > :38:21.important you are speeding up not slowing down towards the end of your
:38:22. > :38:25.turn. A tight balancing act. Particularly, of course, if you are
:38:26. > :38:31.man 2 because you have to stay on the heels of man 1 who was blasting
:38:32. > :38:36.to get away from the gate. All power on that first lap to set the tempo
:38:37. > :38:41.and platform to go on and win. Man 2 has to have the speed to get on the
:38:42. > :38:50.tail, not overcook it but also make sure theyp don't blow man 3's doors
:38:51. > :38:52.off before his term. It is almost three different physiologies you
:38:53. > :38:58.require and you can see the difference between them. The A
:38:59. > :39:04.muscle to do that first lap. It is much, much less about aerodynamics
:39:05. > :39:10.and power. Now about what about this, Jack Karlin, Truman and Owens
:39:11. > :39:13.for Great Britain. 19, 20 and 21. Britain, of course the Olympic
:39:14. > :39:18.champions, not with this kree yo but they've won two sets of gold medals
:39:19. > :39:22.over the winter in World Cup races. A real opportunity. Calum Skinner
:39:23. > :39:30.concentrating on the individual event. So it is all down to them
:39:31. > :39:34.here. As they prepare to go to the start. Calum Skinner, one of the
:39:35. > :39:37.gold medallists from Rio watching on. Watching his young team-mates in
:39:38. > :39:44.this World Championship but look at the Germans on the other side of the
:39:45. > :39:49.track. They are all power. Max leads them off. Leading on lap one for
:39:50. > :39:57.Great Britain, Jack car Lynne. Let's lack at the time here now Carlin.
:39:58. > :40:00.17.301 for them A very good start. Fastest of the series so far and
:40:01. > :40:06.right at the tail end. So that means fastest of all the teams. The
:40:07. > :40:10.British team are flying here as Owens takes them through. Here comes
:40:11. > :40:14.Truman now, on the last lap. This the qualifying ride. Can he keep the
:40:15. > :40:19.pace going? Can Great Britain set the fastest time? We're about to
:40:20. > :40:24.find out now as they cross the line, 43.416. Second fastest. Great
:40:25. > :40:28.Britain second-fastest time so far but a very strong ride out of the
:40:29. > :40:32.gate for this young trio at the World Championships. Well the French
:40:33. > :40:37.were around half a second clear of everybody else. So they really have
:40:38. > :40:40.closed that gap and put some distance between them and the chien
:40:41. > :40:44.autos who are currently in third position. They can be really
:40:45. > :40:51.pleased. They said they wanted the finish top 5. Well what a great way
:40:52. > :40:55.to set your stall out. And maybe the experienced rider had more in his
:40:56. > :41:00.legs in the final lap, perhaps that's where the difference was made
:41:01. > :41:06.for the French. We'll get some real analysis from Sir Chris Hoy later
:41:07. > :41:09.on. The real expert at this particular discipline. A great ride.
:41:10. > :41:16.I think they can be pleased with that one. As we watch Joe Truman
:41:17. > :41:21.from Hampshire, the national sprint champion for 2017. Man 3. A chance
:41:22. > :41:25.for him to get his breath back. They will need to do that because we will
:41:26. > :41:28.be seeing them again in a little while. There we are, Great Britain
:41:29. > :41:32.definitely through, we just need to find out where they are in the
:41:33. > :41:36.standings but as you can see, second fastest up to noint and now we've
:41:37. > :41:41.got an interesting one, because it is the last set of teams on the
:41:42. > :41:43.track and we have the defending World Champions, the Olympic silver
:41:44. > :41:48.medallists there from New Zealand and New Zealand have brought the
:41:49. > :41:53.A-Team for this one. No messing around from them. No young riders
:41:54. > :42:05.getting a chance here who are inexperienced they've gone with the
:42:06. > :42:08.big boys, Mitchell, Dawkins there they are so used to run together.
:42:09. > :42:31.And Poland, their team is good, too. We are watching a New Zealand trio
:42:32. > :42:35.who won the world title in 2014 and last year and Ethan Mitchell is the
:42:36. > :42:43.man who'll lead them out on will 1. -- on lap 1. Well, an excellent
:42:44. > :42:47.start from them already, 0.2 of a second ahead and fastest-opening lap
:42:48. > :42:52.in the series. Mitchell's job is done. It is Sam Webster now who
:42:53. > :42:55.leads the way. Two times World Champion a Commonwealth champion as
:42:56. > :43:00.well in the individual sprint and it'll be up to Eddie Dawkins to
:43:01. > :43:04.bring it home at the end of the ride. Eddie so disappointed with
:43:05. > :43:07.that Olympic silver medal last year. Can they bounce back with another
:43:08. > :43:14.World Championship gold this time round as he grits his teeth? Their
:43:15. > :43:22.time is the fastest, 43.267. They have the speed in their legs and the
:43:23. > :43:25.Kiwis looking good. Dkwins was stalled at the end. Waiting to get
:43:26. > :43:29.through. He had to back off a little bit before he started that final lap
:43:30. > :43:35.and out of the gate, when you get it right, it just looks as if you are
:43:36. > :43:40.not trying hard, because there is no swinging all over the place, it is
:43:41. > :43:45.just a deleen, clean effort, all the power going into forward motion. He
:43:46. > :43:49.was saying he was it was as if he was stuck in the Hong Kong traffic.
:43:50. > :43:52.Backing up, ready to G he had the speed but not the room he had to
:43:53. > :43:56.wait. Right on the wheel, waiting. He knows he can't overlap until that
:43:57. > :43:59.line is crossed. You can see that actually, quite right. It was close,
:44:00. > :44:05.very, very close. Let's have a quick look at the judges. See if there is
:44:06. > :44:09.any deliberation, because he really did, I think get his timing perfect
:44:10. > :44:12.there, which I think he did. Well, let's hope so, because it was only
:44:13. > :44:16.going to be a fraction, wasn't t either way? They are such a good
:44:17. > :44:21.trio and what form they are in. Let's see how the British trio match
:44:22. > :44:24.up with the world's best as we await confirmation of the result. I think
:44:25. > :44:30.Great Britain will be third fastest qualifiers. We've still got to have
:44:31. > :44:35.Belarus. We've forgotten about them. They still have to race because
:44:36. > :44:48.they, remember, had that accident at the start of their ride earlier on,
:44:49. > :44:51.when the rider ended up on the gate, Veremchuk. Here they go, hoping
:44:52. > :45:00.second time lucky. A better start this time. Well, a
:45:01. > :45:07.little bit grabbed by the gate You can just see the snatch in his hands
:45:08. > :45:13.as the rear wheel pulled him. Second rider leaving a gap here for him to
:45:14. > :45:15.accelerate into. The now well-recognised strategy for team
:45:16. > :45:18.sprint. Closing off a little bit quicker, though, again had to stall.
:45:19. > :45:27.That's in the what you want. It is better to come in late and
:45:28. > :45:31.accelerating. Now lap 2, he is about to hand over now for the third and
:45:32. > :45:35.final lap. This is the last team on the track for the qualifiers for the
:45:36. > :45:40.men's team sprint. Remember, eight teams going through to the first
:45:41. > :45:48.round and I don't think Belarus will be one of them, in all likelihood.
:45:49. > :45:51.14th fastest. 45.445. Great Britain will be through. The young trio have
:45:52. > :45:55.performed well, we're just waiting for the official confirmation but we
:45:56. > :46:01.think they are the third fastest team on the track here. I think so
:46:02. > :46:04.but they're going to get a tough draw. They'll have the hardest heat
:46:05. > :46:11.of all, I think but we'll wait for confirmation.
:46:12. > :46:16.We watch Belarus complete their ride and hopefully we'll get the
:46:17. > :46:22.confirmation of the teams that have gone through any moment now.
:46:23. > :46:25.Remember when Belarus fell, Australia just carried on as if
:46:26. > :46:32.nothing had happened and set their time. As they were perfectly
:46:33. > :46:38.entitled to do and Belarus had to wait until everybody hells finished
:46:39. > :46:43.before they got their ride. -- everybody else finished.
:46:44. > :46:48.To qualifying in the men's and women's team sprint. Here is the
:46:49. > :46:53.official result of the qualifying: Great Britain third-feastest They
:46:54. > :46:57.have a good draw, 43. # will be their opposition. Nearly three or
:46:58. > :47:01.four tenths of a second as a buffer. So it is good for them. They could
:47:02. > :47:06.be going for a medal. STUDIO: But it is a very, very tough
:47:07. > :47:11.schedule. Half an hour to warm-down and
:47:12. > :47:17.warm-up and 42 minutes between that and the medal races you can see Jack
:47:18. > :47:20.Truman shattered. Jack Carlin, less to do physically but when you are
:47:21. > :47:26.the third man, Chris, as you know, it is just, brutal It is brutal. I
:47:27. > :47:30.really feel sorry for Joe. Half an hour didn't seem like too bad a turn
:47:31. > :47:34.around but when you have been producing that amount of lactic acid
:47:35. > :47:39.the body is trying to flush it out, he will be hurting and thinking
:47:40. > :47:43.about getting back on his bike for the second ride and hopefully final
:47:44. > :47:48.round. Withdrew do you see the areas for improvement? The fist lap was
:47:49. > :47:53.exceptional. A 12.30. He has done that before. Ryan Owens, I think did
:47:54. > :48:01.a really exceptional ride here. 12.57, I think it was for the second
:48:02. > :48:05.lap. That's world class. Owe quiff tloent Jason Kenny at the Olympic
:48:06. > :48:09.Games. I think the fatigue was showing on Joe Truman having to soak
:48:10. > :48:13.up the quick start and second lap. He will be hoping to go quicker.
:48:14. > :48:16.Potentially he might be holding back a little bit subconsciously thinking
:48:17. > :48:21.- it is just the qualification round. Come the final I would like
:48:22. > :48:25.to see him do a 13.2 or quicker. Still scope to get into the gold
:48:26. > :48:30.medal race? I think so. They can't hold back now. There is only a tenth
:48:31. > :48:34.and a-and-a-half difference between first and fourth. They know the
:48:35. > :48:38.ballpark figures. They could win or be out of the medals, it could be
:48:39. > :48:42.that close. The first medals will be decided in the next race, the
:48:43. > :48:47.women's scratch race which features, Elinor Barker, 22 from Cardiff. She
:48:48. > :48:50.was part of the team pursuit that took gold in Rio but is focussing on
:48:51. > :48:56.different events. Let's hear from her. I think I will still be racing
:48:57. > :49:01.team pursuit but not the same build-up. I will not train for it
:49:02. > :49:06.every day, it'll be like a bit of a cycle or warm-up for the other
:49:07. > :49:10.races. It helps keeping you fresh. I don't think I could focus on it
:49:11. > :49:16.completely for four years which is why I'm taking time out. But I think
:49:17. > :49:19.it'll still be xet ti. The worlds are a little bit later this year and
:49:20. > :49:23.the qualification is more strict than it was four years ago, after
:49:24. > :49:27.London, approximate means people are having a solid track season and
:49:28. > :49:31.enough time to come back after a post-Rio break and get back up to
:49:32. > :49:35.fitness and be going well and have a lot of focus, so from what I've seen
:49:36. > :49:39.at World Cups, I think it'll be competitive. Let's centre on the
:49:40. > :49:42.focus, you mentioned a little less on the team pursuit. I can
:49:43. > :49:46.understand it, maybe the demands are a bit too much for that for our fo
:49:47. > :49:50.you are years, aren't they? I think so. I have been intrag with the
:49:51. > :49:54.girls for a couple of weeks now -- I've been training, I have been
:49:55. > :49:59.enjoying it. But, realistic clicks if I'm going to enjoy it in Tokyo,
:50:00. > :50:05.if I want to still be doing it in Tokyo, I can't have an entire block
:50:06. > :50:08.of focussing on team pursuit, it's a bit too precise and too numbers
:50:09. > :50:13.based to have that kind of mental space for eight years, so toll take
:50:14. > :50:18.time out is quite refreshing. Rob with the questions, speaking to
:50:19. > :50:24.Eleanor about a week ago about why she's facing herself. Jo Russell
:50:25. > :50:27.Shand watching here. 22 and her fifth major Championships She came
:50:28. > :50:30.into the team after the London Olympics and has been focussed on
:50:31. > :50:34.team pursuit almost solely since them. I can understand her comment
:50:35. > :50:38.about wanting to try other things. This is a scratch trace which isn't
:50:39. > :50:42.an Olympic event but part of the op nigh um, but people now would like
:50:43. > :50:48.to show they have potential for that event. It opens up a lot of
:50:49. > :50:57.opportunities. El is a very determined rider ie. ' Excited to
:50:58. > :51:02.see how she will get on. And this is a big bunch -- I'm excited to see
:51:03. > :51:05.how she will get on. This is a big bunch race, and it is all about race
:51:06. > :51:11.tactics. Let's join the commentators.
:51:12. > :51:16.COMMENTATOR: 40 laps of the track for the riders. 40 laps, Elinor
:51:17. > :51:34.Barker racing for Great Britain. She was third in Los Angeles. And
:51:35. > :51:37.giving herself a mental break, by riding other events. She said she
:51:38. > :51:42.needed to step back from the team pursuit for a bit. Maybe is if she
:51:43. > :51:48.decides to go back in a couple of years ahead of Tokyo she can gop and
:51:49. > :51:54.focus on it, remember than constantly doing the whole thing. A
:51:55. > :52:01.busman's who will day. It keeps them focussed on the racing. -- a bus
:52:02. > :52:09.man's who will day. It gives them a change of scene. There is Elinor.
:52:10. > :52:19.The Japanese rider, she is on the front. She gives way to the rider in
:52:20. > :52:22.the pale blue, with black, yellow and black band around the chest of
:52:23. > :52:34.Belgium. A big name in the race. A real star.
:52:35. > :52:52.I think she has been attracted by the Maddison as well as races on
:52:53. > :52:58.this one. She's on the front at the moment. She hands over to the
:52:59. > :53:04.Italian rider. And taking over is the Norwegian, who is dominating the
:53:05. > :53:10.Norwegian track Championships. She has seven national titles. Sarah
:53:11. > :53:15.Hammer swinging off the front. One of the most prolific riders in
:53:16. > :53:21.recent years. In the endurance event. We see an attack here. The
:53:22. > :53:25.21-year-old German there No-one following at the moment. Nobody
:53:26. > :53:29.wants to use up energy but if you can't sprint you've got to do
:53:30. > :53:34.something and going for the long one, you don't, it doesn't often
:53:35. > :53:38.come off but if it's the only chance you've got, it is the best
:53:39. > :53:45.opportunity and she's got a quarter of a lap now. There is a tempo Hynd
:53:46. > :53:50.which will stop anybody trying to join her when the pace is high, she
:53:51. > :53:56.has held out there. Gaining steadily at the moment. Slowly increasing the
:53:57. > :53:59.pace without leading the chase. Everyone playing poker, hoping
:54:00. > :54:10.somebody else will use up their energy. There is the front of the
:54:11. > :54:14.race. The German rider nearly has half a lap. You can see there now.
:54:15. > :54:22.Elinor Barker just peels off the front. Now coming through for
:54:23. > :54:28.Australia there, Christina Klonan. A first year elite rider, the
:54:29. > :54:35.Queenslander. Well, it is significant. Hard, hard work. It'll
:54:36. > :54:39.be starting to bite. She still has three-quarters of this race to go.
:54:40. > :54:44.Here is the counter from the Russian. She has decided to wait
:54:45. > :54:50.long enough and catapulted out and the rider from Hong Kong has decided
:54:51. > :54:57.to go with her. Hence a few cheers in the main stand here down below
:54:58. > :55:02.us. They are working well. Not sure if she will be able to make a lot of
:55:03. > :55:06.use of these two. We'll see if she can slot in. A dangerous move. Do
:55:07. > :55:10.you think she was waiting or do you think she's cooked? It was the right
:55:11. > :55:13.thing to do but you can see the fatigue now. It'll be tough to
:55:14. > :55:17.recover from that. I don't think they will be given opportunity to
:55:18. > :55:21.get themselves organised because the chase is on Hynd. I think we know
:55:22. > :55:26.the answer, she was tired she hasn't managed to hold the wheels and the
:55:27. > :55:32.rest of the field baring down from here. The rider from Hong Kong, who
:55:33. > :55:41.also rides on the roads, she got a decent placing in the overall in the
:55:42. > :55:42.Tour of Thailand last year, looks Hynd and leads them through, 26 laps
:55:43. > :55:49.to It makes you wonder, all this effort
:55:50. > :55:54.to get up front, I have company and then to stop is a Kaurous move. Why
:55:55. > :56:02.do it in the fist -- curious move. Why do it in the first place? It
:56:03. > :56:11.might have been an element of panic because Pala looked like she was
:56:12. > :56:18.gaining too much time. There is Pavlendova from Slovakia. 15 laps
:56:19. > :56:32.into this race. China represented up at the front.
:56:33. > :56:39.By Li, the national scratch race champion. Barker still in the pack.
:56:40. > :56:48.Moving forward now, following the wheel of a rider that we haven't
:56:49. > :56:52.mentioned yet. Kirsten from the Netth Netherlands. Here is Hamer
:56:53. > :57:00.coming from the back, a serious move. Sarah hammer going for it. The
:57:01. > :57:05.great rival of Laura Trott. Four times she's ended up with a silver
:57:06. > :57:11.medal. But she has a great record at the World Championships. She is
:57:12. > :57:15.going for it now. The danger has been spotted and Kirsten senses she
:57:16. > :57:21.has to follow otherwise they will not be seeing her again? A really
:57:22. > :57:26.big, committed move, for somebody who can sprint, Sarah Hammer. She'll
:57:27. > :57:30.try to bluff it to get somebody else do the chasing but decided she will
:57:31. > :57:42.have to close the track. Will they work toting? I'm not sure, actually.
:57:43. > :57:51.It is a classy she riders here. Yes, Jasmine Glazer from Canada. World
:57:52. > :57:57.silver medallist last year in London. She's up there too, twice
:57:58. > :58:04.she stood on the podium at the Olympic games. So the Canadian on
:58:05. > :58:09.the front, then the United States and Kirsten Velde. A hay-powered
:58:10. > :58:15.trio we have. And having a look to see Elinor Barker who is involved in
:58:16. > :58:18.the chase. They are losing the gap. Barker and Dura, part of a
:58:19. > :58:22.three-rider group, closing in rapidly at those on the front. They
:58:23. > :58:32.have help from the Italian rider as well. Barbieri from Italy. Now a
:58:33. > :58:37.leading group of six. Well, it is a big number to go up the road now,
:58:38. > :58:43.but it might be too big. You start to get a passenger, somebody who is
:58:44. > :58:47.not going through. Nobody else wants to expend energy and everybody
:58:48. > :58:52.intings U in an event like this, 15 laps to go, you need a group of
:58:53. > :58:55.three to four absolute maximum. But they are rolling through and you
:58:56. > :58:59.have to say when all the talent is up the road, who is going to do the
:59:00. > :59:03.chasing? Yes, real talent in the leading club. The Australian was
:59:04. > :59:11.trying to get something going but realises nobody is prepared to help
:59:12. > :59:17.her. Now the Polish rider tries to open up the gap and lead the chase
:59:18. > :59:22.and much more the Australian is on the front, using up a lot of energy
:59:23. > :59:26.in her fist World Championship race at elite level A closeable gap. The
:59:27. > :59:29.length of the straight at the moment. But you have to do it
:59:30. > :59:32.quickly and at the moment they are swunging up the track, you can see
:59:33. > :59:37.the judge be pointing at the front of the race, sometimes it breaks up
:59:38. > :59:41.so much, it is hard to know which is the pointed end. That's his job to
:59:42. > :59:44.point at the first rider all the time. Elinor Barker is tucked in
:59:45. > :59:48.rather neatly in the mid-ess backpack. I think of the riders
:59:49. > :59:53.there, certainly several others who have done far greater amount of work
:59:54. > :00:03.that she has. She has ridden cannily up to this point. Wild used up a lot
:00:04. > :00:08.of energy. Well, 12 laps to go and they themselves have the main group
:00:09. > :00:12.within their sights. A long and a straight away. The impetus has gone
:00:13. > :00:17.out of the chase. They don't believe they could make it and so they could
:00:18. > :00:21.end up catching now with 11 laps to g that could get really messy for
:00:22. > :00:25.this group because the winner, who's almost certainly going to come from
:00:26. > :00:30.this six now... It could get messy for us in the commentary box, Keegan
:00:31. > :00:38.eye for anybody if they're all mixed in together. -- keeping an eye.
:00:39. > :00:42.Ten laps to go but the gap is closing but thankfully hasn't closed
:00:43. > :00:46.yet. Kirsten Wild on the front They are ticking through now, waiting for
:00:47. > :00:50.the finish and it is going to be decision time, soon. I say it often
:00:51. > :00:53.when we watch this event, nine laps to go at about two-and-a-half
:00:54. > :00:59.minutes of racing. You have to choose and am I go to wait for the
:01:00. > :01:01.sprint or attack? And in that no-man's-land where people hesitate,
:01:02. > :01:18.often a lone attack can work. Much to the crowd's delight, she is
:01:19. > :01:25.off the main pack now. This could get very exciting. Euro may remember
:01:26. > :01:30.she forced that early breakaway, she has been lapped by the riders at the
:01:31. > :01:36.front. Elinor Barker at the front for Great Britain, Kirsten Wild of
:01:37. > :01:49.the Netherlands just behind her. Tucked in in third place from
:01:50. > :01:54.Italy,... Barker wants to get to the front here. She doesn't want to be
:01:55. > :02:02.stuck in traffic. Wilde also aware of the danger. This one is likely to
:02:03. > :02:05.come down to a sprint. Elinor Barker has risen this race really well so
:02:06. > :02:15.far, as Jasmin Duehring hits the front. Barker is nicely placed on
:02:16. > :02:21.the shoulder. She is just in the right place. Got to be careful not
:02:22. > :02:26.to get swamped. Hammer coming round the outside. She has had a little
:02:27. > :02:30.breather, in her terms anyway, and ready to go for it again. The rider
:02:31. > :02:34.from Hong Kong looking feisty, stuck in the middle of the track out on
:02:35. > :02:39.her own. Three laps to go and positioning is so important. Sarah
:02:40. > :02:43.Hammer is trying to up the pace but the others can sense that as well.
:02:44. > :02:47.Wild is not giving an inch there, as Elinor Barker comes around the
:02:48. > :02:54.outside. Kirsten Wild will not give way. Barbieri of Italy in third
:02:55. > :03:02.place. Elinor Barker in the business end of this one with two laps to go.
:03:03. > :03:06.She just got stuck on the shoulder. Barker, look at this ride! And now
:03:07. > :03:11.at the bell it is Elinor Barker from Great Britain, 150 metres away from
:03:12. > :03:16.World Championship gold. Can she hang on? Half a lap to go, they are
:03:17. > :03:21.closing in a bit, I don't know if Kirsten Wild has enough left! Barker
:03:22. > :03:28.has just got an bit more. Can she do it? Just pipped by Barbieri of Italy
:03:29. > :03:32.underlined! So, so close. What a dramatic race and what a superb
:03:33. > :03:36.effort from Elinor Barker of Great Britain. That so nearly led to her
:03:37. > :03:41.becoming the world's scratch race champion. He will finish with the
:03:42. > :03:47.silver medal. She could not have done any more. We barely mention her
:03:48. > :03:51.name in the first half of that race, which is exactly what you want. She
:03:52. > :03:57.positioned herself well and she use that energy very carefully. It was a
:03:58. > :04:02.good move, she came around the outside. See what duck on Kirsten
:04:03. > :04:05.Wild's shoulder, she had to go forward. She couldn't stay there,
:04:06. > :04:09.she couldn't be salaried and go back. She was committed with two and
:04:10. > :04:13.a half plus laps to go, to be honest. So the strength was there
:04:14. > :04:18.but the race was decided for her, really. She had to go just that
:04:19. > :04:22.little bit early. Elinor Barker just swaps there as they crossed the
:04:23. > :04:27.line, but Barbieri came second on this stage of the Tour down under on
:04:28. > :04:31.the road, beaten by Kirsten Wild to the line on that one. But she had
:04:32. > :04:36.the staying power here as they came up towards the line, and did Elinor
:04:37. > :04:40.Barker hang on for the silver medal? I thought she had... In the jihad.
:04:41. > :04:50.The computer was telling us otherwise. She gets the silver.
:04:51. > :04:55.STUDIO That was heartbreaking for Elinor
:04:56. > :05:01.Barker. What a terrifically brave ride that was in a gruelling ten
:05:02. > :05:05.kilometres around that velodrome. Having caught up and negotiated the
:05:06. > :05:11.traffic problems, she is caught just wide. That is a great performance
:05:12. > :05:15.first of all and then what she might be thinking after it... She might be
:05:16. > :05:20.initially disappointed because she thought she was going to get the
:05:21. > :05:28.gold medal, but when she reflects on it... You will be happy. When she
:05:29. > :05:33.got stuck on Kirsten Wild's hip. It is a long way to go on the outside.
:05:34. > :05:39.You either drop back or commit and go for it and get to the front. The
:05:40. > :05:43.Italian was quite canny and, to be fair, she had a great ride. Jo,
:05:44. > :05:47.let's have a look at the closing stages and see what Chris is talking
:05:48. > :05:51.about. Just being stuck in a little bit wide. The Dutch rider in the
:05:52. > :05:55.orange on the inside committee took the shortest line around the track.
:05:56. > :05:59.Elinor Barker is travelling further this whole time but trying to get
:06:00. > :06:03.herself at the front. She obviously wants to lead the race out for the
:06:04. > :06:08.spring, she thinks that is her best chance. But it's taking her a while
:06:09. > :06:11.to get round Kirsten Wild. In those six runners in the break you have
:06:12. > :06:15.got some world-class sprinters. Elinor Barker just runs away from
:06:16. > :06:22.them here. She's got so much power. Kirsten Wild, Sarah Hammer, Jolien
:06:23. > :06:26.D'Hoore, they are just all such strong sprinters but she has got a
:06:27. > :06:30.gap on them. She has got the speed going up the banking and coming into
:06:31. > :06:39.the home stride. -- the home straight. Frustrating for Elle.
:06:40. > :06:46.Elinor Barker making her way to the interview position. Let's hear from
:06:47. > :06:49.her. And in the Barker, a silver medal but so close to that gold
:06:50. > :06:56.medal. Just take us through that last couple of laps, there. Yeah, it
:06:57. > :07:02.all went pretty well, to be honest, I just guess not quite fast enough
:07:03. > :07:09.at the end. When I came round Kirsten Wild, I thought I had won
:07:10. > :07:12.the race committee is like the fastest sprinter there is, but it
:07:13. > :07:21.doesn't always stay the same bad as it? Congrats to her but I'm
:07:22. > :07:24.disappointed. It was brave to go to the front but the Italian had the
:07:25. > :07:29.benefit of seeing what was going on behind. Yet, it was a plan but it
:07:30. > :07:34.was ever so slightly too soon, which was possibly what cost me the race,
:07:35. > :07:40.I suppose. I wanted someone to take it on sooner. I thought she was
:07:41. > :07:46.going to and I was going to get a perfect lead out. A bit disappointed
:07:47. > :07:51.now but hopefully by tomorrow I will feel a bit more proud of it. I think
:07:52. > :07:56.you should do, it was a really well put together race just on the line

:08:30. > :08:34.way with the women's team sprint. This is the first round. Remember,
:08:35. > :08:38.we're down to the last eight here. According to how these races go will
:08:39. > :08:47.sort out who goes through and races for the medals later on. China
:08:48. > :08:53.versus Spain. It is pretty close, this one. Hundreds of seconds in it
:08:54. > :08:59.at the moment. China leading the way but as Chris says, only by a
:09:00. > :09:08.fraction, as they come round towards the finish here. It is Eleanor can
:09:09. > :09:20.that is for Spain who has been pipped to the line. They improved on
:09:21. > :09:23.their lap in the first round. Half an hour between these rounds and for
:09:24. > :09:31.the sprint athletes, it is pretty brutal. Everything going into just
:09:32. > :09:36.driving that effort out. The first few pedal strokes critical in such a
:09:37. > :09:58.short event. So, China powering over the line
:09:59. > :10:12.with Lin Junhong, last year's Asian sprint champion, and Guo Shuang who
:10:13. > :10:18.has been at the top of her sport for a long time as well. The defending
:10:19. > :10:29.champions now, Russia, up against the Netherlands. Shanne
:10:30. > :10:36.Braspennincx, who also writes the more endurance -based races. Keira
:10:37. > :10:39.Lambert Inc as well. Actually, Laurine van Riessen has come in for

:10:46. > :10:48.If they are able to just keep repeating these performances, that
:10:49. > :10:53.is a very different thing to just posting a fast qualifier. No change
:10:54. > :11:00.for the Dutch but you just get the feeling this is going to be about
:11:01. > :11:18.Russia. I way they go, clean start. Just look at the power being put
:11:19. > :11:21.down their by Shmeleva of Russia. Voinova has got the little gap that
:11:22. > :11:25.will allow her to come powering through for the final lap. You can
:11:26. > :11:30.see the snap out of the gate was very sharp. The thick end of a
:11:31. > :11:34.second between them there, which is enormous at this level of
:11:35. > :11:41.competition. In fact it goes out to over a second. 32.456 is the time
:11:42. > :11:46.for Russia. They are warming up very nicely, as this competition goes on.
:11:47. > :11:55.The second fastest time in the competition so far.
:11:56. > :12:03.So, only Germany have gone faster in the qualifiers. They've got to be
:12:04. > :12:10.pleased with that. But Russia, with a ride like that, could change,
:12:11. > :12:14.hoping it will be enough to put them in the final. We won't have to wait
:12:15. > :12:17.too long, Australia and Canada will be on the track at any moment and
:12:18. > :12:23.then it will be Germany and Colombia. So about details, this
:12:24. > :12:26.event, as we've heard already interviews, if you're in the top
:12:27. > :12:34.five then you're in with a shout of a medal.
:12:35. > :12:42.At the highest level, it can be about who makes the least mistakes
:12:43. > :12:47.as well. Consistency is as important as physical ability.
:12:48. > :12:59.Kate O'Brien and Amelia Walsh for Canada. We are only 20 seconds away

:13:31. > :13:33.she get back to the summit this time with a new partner in Stephanie
:13:34. > :13:38.Morton? They will be looking to better their previous lap and they
:13:39. > :13:43.have done just that. 18.828, Australia, going just faster. And
:13:44. > :13:51.they maintain it? Stephanie Morton over halfway through their final
:13:52. > :13:56.lap, going towards the line, 32.570 the time for Australia. That was a
:13:57. > :14:08.good ride and a good finish by Morton. Not quite as quick as
:14:09. > :14:20.Russia. 32.456 for them, but Australia looking good too. It must
:14:21. > :14:27.be very difficult being in that second place and deciding how much
:14:28. > :14:32.to charge at the end. You will know, is your team-mate likely to die at
:14:33. > :14:40.the end and you just rely on them to kick out that last bend? All those

:15:17. > :15:27.of the eight. They are up against it, basically. The time is still
:15:28. > :15:37.important. It's not just about winning, it's about which medal
:15:38. > :15:42.you're going for. Kristina Vogel and Miriam Welte, three times previously
:15:43. > :15:46.this team have it did the title. They look very good, they were the
:15:47. > :15:51.fastest qualifiers. I think I said Australia then, this German pair. So
:15:52. > :15:58.slick. They are so still but all the power is going forward. The control
:15:59. > :16:07.muscle, their timing pretty good actually. Just look at the speed.
:16:08. > :16:12.Kristina Vogel is the rider we want to see. Into the back straight for
:16:13. > :16:17.the last time. Kristina Vogel, world and Olympic champion, crosses the
:16:18. > :16:20.line with the fastest time. 32.668, not the quickest of those in the
:16:21. > :16:24.first round, but more than enough to see off Colombia but yellow the only
:16:25. > :16:27.team is actually seen so far down a little bit slower... Might be a

:16:42. > :16:50.Three tenths of a second. Still very fast, but at this level, you just
:16:51. > :16:54.can't afford to make mistakes. So, they could well not be in the final,
:16:55. > :17:00.Germany. They are not one of the fastest two teams.
:17:01. > :17:06.Well, as always, we had best wait for full confirmation. We've had a
:17:07. > :17:12.couple of glitches on our computer so far, so we hate to go ahead of
:17:13. > :17:15.the captions, but here we are. Russia against Australia for gold
:17:16. > :17:19.and silver, and as we thought, Germany just letting it slip after
:17:20. > :17:24.that great start they will have to race for bronze. Having finished in
:17:25. > :17:28.the Olympic and the well tended love it, given the way they start earlier
:17:29. > :17:31.today, that will be a disappointment, I think. Release a
:17:32. > :17:36.prized by that. They looked so slick. I didn't see anybody
:17:37. > :17:41.challenging them there, and their pedigree is such that they are good
:17:42. > :17:45.performers and you could expect them to deliver again and again. Slowing
:17:46. > :17:50.in that second ride quite considerably. They will be really
:17:51. > :17:51.disappointed. Men's team sprint coming up
:17:52. > :17:57.STUDIO Let's get a quick thought from Chris
:17:58. > :18:01.Hoy on what the British men have to do now in this round of the team
:18:02. > :18:06.sprint. It's not just about beating the Dutch, it's about recording a
:18:07. > :18:09.fast enough time to get the win in the gold medal race. They have to
:18:10. > :18:18.win a hit but they have to do it with a quick time. -- win a heat. He
:18:19. > :18:25.will still feel his legs from the first ride. But hopefully it will be
:18:26. > :18:28.the rider for the gold medal. At the moment Poland against China is on
:18:29. > :18:36.the track. COMMENTATOR: Well, a slight problem
:18:37. > :18:40.here, Claire, because China are powering around the track, still
:18:41. > :18:44.going, and the officials have been blowing whistles constantly telling
:18:45. > :18:49.them to stop! They just won't. We've had whistles, we've had guns! Well,
:18:50. > :18:53.that is going to cause a problem. We're not quite sure as yet, we will
:18:54. > :18:57.see on the replay what caused the false start. It's usually one of the
:18:58. > :19:04.riders overtaking rider won in the starting gate that causes the gun to
:19:05. > :19:08.be fired. They must lead off. You can see here, they have already
:19:09. > :19:16.anticipated the start quite badly, to be honest. And now the problem
:19:17. > :19:23.they've got, Chris, it causes problems themselves and they have
:19:24. > :19:26.spent a lot of their energy. You can't fault their commitment,
:19:27. > :19:33.though! They are determined to see it through. You can fault their
:19:34. > :19:37.hearing, though! What is interesting, we normally use a
:19:38. > :19:41.starter's pestle to fire a real gun and it is a very different sound to
:19:42. > :19:46.the electric one way using here. It is very different and it might just
:19:47. > :19:49.not being bedded in their psyche. I think we just need something that
:19:50. > :19:53.makes everybody jump, like we used to have. Because clearly what they
:19:54. > :19:59.are using their didn't work there, with China. He thought that his job
:20:00. > :20:07.was done for a little while but the news isn't good. For China.
:20:08. > :20:15.So they ride off on the inside of the track. We will have a minor
:20:16. > :20:29.delay but it won't last for long, because next up will be Great
:20:30. > :20:37.Britain and the Netherlands. Owens, Carlin and Joseph Truman the riders.
:20:38. > :20:40.This lovely space age velodrome has only been here for three or four
:20:41. > :20:45.years. They do have a fantastic facility. We are seven hours ahead
:20:46. > :20:50.of you here, so it is mid-evening in Hong Kong. One or two bleary eyed
:20:51. > :20:51.team staff in the centre of the track just getting used to it,
:20:52. > :21:04.working off the jet -- working off the jet lag from the
:21:05. > :21:09.last 48 hours or so. As the British trio head to the line. Performed
:21:10. > :21:18.well in their qualifying ride. They certainly did, they can be pleased
:21:19. > :21:21.with that. They wanted to finish top five in this competition, but
:21:22. > :21:27.they've got a very good chance here at ending up with much better than
:21:28. > :21:30.that. So fingers crossed. But as we've already seen, it is all about
:21:31. > :21:37.repetition and backing up, being able to do it not just once but
:21:38. > :21:40.again and again. A couple of changes for the Dutch because Neils van whom
:21:41. > :22:01.the ... There is no Theo Bos and no
:22:02. > :22:07.Jeffrey Hoogland either for this one. Off they go. Three laps of the
:22:08. > :22:10.track to decide whether Great Britain's young trio will race for a
:22:11. > :22:14.medal tonight in the men's team sprint. Nicely out of the blocks
:22:15. > :22:19.both teams, plenty of snap there. You can see the gap starting to
:22:20. > :22:23.form, it's intentional. The others accelerating into its. Yes, don't
:22:24. > :22:29.worry, that wasn't a problem there. Jack Carlin's job was done and now
:22:30. > :22:32.Ryan Owens, who was the reserve sprint of Great Britain in Rio last
:22:33. > :22:37.year, giving his team absolutely everything, as they take the bell. A
:22:38. > :22:42.bit of a lag there, not quite on the wheel, but that could cost in the
:22:43. > :22:50.closing stages. Joe Truman for Great Britain, booking a final -- Matthijs
:22:51. > :22:56.Buchli a final ride for the Netherlands. The Netherlands the
:22:57. > :23:01.fastest time. 43.481, still awaiting the time for Great Britain. 43.6
:23:02. > :23:07.exec has now come up. I think just not getting on the wheel there in
:23:08. > :23:15.that three might have just cost them at the back of that race. Both of
:23:16. > :23:21.them got off the mark nicely. The opening lap was absolutely
:23:22. > :23:24.world-class. According to the rule that they are laid down in front of
:23:25. > :23:29.us here, that means that Great Britain will not be racing for a
:23:30. > :23:34.medal and their place, it is the four winners who will race for the
:23:35. > :23:39.medals. The fastest two ride off for the gold. Disappointing, there. They
:23:40. > :23:43.got themselves the opportunity, but what a learning experience. They
:23:44. > :23:49.acquitted themselves well in qualifying. Won't it be frustrating
:23:50. > :23:53.if their time is quicker than teams that are actually racing pulled, but
:23:54. > :23:56.we will have to wait and see. Plenty to build on. Great Britain's time,
:23:57. > :24:07.43.6 -- 40 3.666, but the experience of
:24:08. > :24:15.the Dutch carrying them home in the end, as France come up towards the
:24:16. > :24:21.line now. Francois Pervis coming in for this one, who conquered all
:24:22. > :24:25.before him, swept the board at Columbia in the World Championships
:24:26. > :24:32.three-year is ago. Wasn't quite the same when he went to Rio last
:24:33. > :24:36.summer. A good few years, 14 and 15. They had a lot of upsets within the
:24:37. > :24:40.team, they had some coaching issues. They weren't all getting on terribly
:24:41. > :24:53.well in the French sprint Quad, were they? At the other side of the
:24:54. > :24:58.track, Australia. Nathan Hart, Matthew Glaetzer and Patrick
:24:59. > :25:02.Constable coming in. Oh! The French, terrible start. We will have to have
:25:03. > :25:06.a restart for France and Australia just ease up as well. This is going
:25:07. > :25:11.to be interesting. The did anticipate the gate and grabbed his
:25:12. > :25:14.wheel. The commerce heirs may decide to be lenient here because they had
:25:15. > :25:21.a litre to Matt mishap for that restart. There was a fall but it was
:25:22. > :25:25.clearly not an intentional fall, the days are gone when you could do
:25:26. > :25:35.that, that what the real problem. Did the gatekeeper hold of his
:25:36. > :25:40.wheel? Well, I think the connoisseurs should be generous
:25:41. > :25:54.there. We haven't had a problem on the other side of the track. That is
:25:55. > :26:01.Benjamin Edelin. Well, they will be looking closely at that. Do you
:26:02. > :26:04.think it's a sticky gate? Well, it could be anticipation or it could be
:26:05. > :26:08.the gate. We can't tell within hundreds of a second whether the
:26:09. > :26:14.gate is opening late or whether he went early. I just wonder whether
:26:15. > :26:17.Chris Hoy back in the studio has got any thoughts on what is happening
:26:18. > :26:21.out here? Yeah, it looks as though they are potentially going a little
:26:22. > :26:25.bit early but that has been entered -- been exaggerated by the fact that
:26:26. > :26:31.the person standing on the gate does not look particularly heavy. A way
:26:32. > :26:32.to try to stabilise it so if you go fractionally early, it is not going
:26:33. > :26:41.to an stabilise the rider. Well, there is an incredible amount
:26:42. > :26:47.of power going through the gate. Thanks for that, Chris. We will go
:26:48. > :26:52.back to the studio of course once we have concluded this first round in
:26:53. > :26:54.the men's team sprint, as the Australian rider Nathan Hart just
:26:55. > :27:01.sort himself out and gets ready to go back out there onto the track.
:27:02. > :27:07.Nathan Hart, Commonwealth bronze medallist in this event. In the won
:27:08. > :27:09.team sprint for a few years now. 2012 in Melbourne, a few months
:27:10. > :27:13.ahead of the London Olympics, that was the last time they ruled the
:27:14. > :27:18.roost in this particular event. Matthew Glaetzer, who is in their
:27:19. > :27:24.team today, he was one of their riders five years ago when they won.
:27:25. > :27:32.Benjamin Edelin, Francois Pervis and Louis Pijourlet for France in this
:27:33. > :27:36.one. Being doubly sure with the gates to make sure they have got it
:27:37. > :27:40.right. As soon as the bike is secure, the clock starts to count
:27:41. > :27:44.down from 50 seconds. Regardless of whether he is strapped in not...
:27:45. > :27:48.They are so used to doing this repetition of this starting
:27:49. > :27:52.procedure again and again in their training. They know that 50 seconds
:27:53. > :27:58.is a long time, actually when it's your day job, so to speak. The
:27:59. > :28:05.texture of the materials on these suits that the riders are wearing,
:28:06. > :28:06.it's all about manipulating airflow. Hoping to try to get that bit of
:28:07. > :28:19.extra speed. Smart new kit for the Australians.
:28:20. > :28:25.Unveiled for the first time at these World Championships. Away we go,
:28:26. > :28:31.clean start this time, Benjamin Edelin with no problem at the gate
:28:32. > :28:34.on the second time of asking. Both teams cleanly away and you would
:28:35. > :28:41.expect that at this level. Both of them going quick. Australia
:28:42. > :28:48.significantly faster than France at the moment, three tenths of a second
:28:49. > :28:52.ahead. Good start by Nathan Hartley. We often see him powering away in
:28:53. > :28:59.the individual match. Now, what sort of time will he pass over? 34 point
:29:00. > :29:08.X two. Dutifully tied change over. He got it spot on and gave nothing
:29:09. > :29:13.away. Constable and Francois Pervis, the two last riders on the track.
:29:14. > :29:18.Francois Pervis has turned it around for France on the third lap, what a
:29:19. > :29:21.ride! A remarkable comeback. There were three tenths of a second in
:29:22. > :29:25.arrears and in an event like this, that is absolutely enormous. A
:29:26. > :29:31.blistering finish, they just got their nose in front just there.
:29:32. > :29:34.Well, Francois Pervis looks as if he has got his act back together again,
:29:35. > :29:50.doesn't he come with a ride like that? Absolutely. Here comes the
:29:51. > :30:00.handover from man two the man three, Louis Pijourlet. Carrying Francois
:30:01. > :30:05.Pervis right on the wheel there. You're giving away a length really
:30:06. > :30:09.if you hit the line early, as long as you don't overlap, as long as you
:30:10. > :30:13.don't touch that line first you can gain almost a bike length. It takes
:30:14. > :30:15.some bottle and think at these speeds probably playing it safe and
:30:16. > :30:18.staying in the slipstream like that is potentially the way to go top
:30:19. > :30:23.white they kept him under wraps because he didn't ride in the
:30:24. > :30:28.qualifying race. So impressive stuff from France there.
:30:29. > :30:32.The strategy paid off. It certainly did as we prepare to watch the World
:30:33. > :31:04.Champions. New Zealand. Watanabe will be the third man for
:31:05. > :31:08.Japan, on the far side. 45 seconds to G New Zealand desperate to hold
:31:09. > :31:13.on to their crown. They were pipped by Great Britain in Rio. But this
:31:14. > :31:15.trio, two-time World Champions, including last year in London, 13
:31:16. > :31:37.months ago. They look keyed up for T this must
:31:38. > :31:41.be the hardest part. -- they looked keyed up for it. This must be the
:31:42. > :31:44.hardest part the last few seconds knowing you can't make a single
:31:45. > :31:48.mistake. Well getting out of the gate has been the hard part for a
:31:49. > :31:51.number of teams but New Zealand's riders coped with it well and
:31:52. > :31:55.getting a clean start, Ethan Mitchell. It is clean, you can see
:31:56. > :32:03.the energy going in there, you can't you? Impressive stuff. Well in the
:32:04. > :32:07.lead. 17.154. Ethan Mitchell. A great ride for him as Sam Webster
:32:08. > :32:11.takes up the running now. It's all about the time, though, which medal
:32:12. > :32:15.you are going for. You don't have to win, you have to post the fast time
:32:16. > :32:20.if you want a gold go for gold. How much speds has Dawkins got in his
:32:21. > :32:27.legs, he is half bay down the back straight. Up against Watanabe, but
:32:28. > :32:33.it is about the rider in black as Dawkins crosses the line 43.183.
:32:34. > :32:37.Fastest so far. I say so far bus we're in the quite sure who is going
:32:38. > :32:42.to get to ride again or not up to now. Well, remembered that Poland
:32:43. > :32:45.and China haven't posted a time even though China went around. Poland
:32:46. > :32:49.weren't at fault when the race was stopped so they are going to
:32:50. > :32:52.actually get to ride again, just outside of our pictures now they are
:32:53. > :32:56.going brought to the track. And chain ease riders coming out so
:32:57. > :32:59.everybody gets another go. The judges are obviously in a benevolent
:33:00. > :33:07.mood today for the start of these Championships. We watch once again
:33:08. > :33:11.the defending World Champions powering their way around the track.
:33:12. > :33:15.You can see why they hold that title. Coming into the back
:33:16. > :33:22.straight. Again, oh, really pushing it there. Cannot overlap before they
:33:23. > :33:27.cross that line. So, just think the speed they're travelling, well over
:33:28. > :33:31.60 kilometres an hour and this kind of judgment, amazing. Well look
:33:32. > :33:35.forward to Chris Hoy's analysis of their performance and everybody
:33:36. > :33:38.else's in a few minutes' time but they look impressive from start it
:33:39. > :33:43.if Iish New Zealand when they get out on the track, the way they ride.
:33:44. > :33:46.Very clean, sharp and fast. But this was went to be the first heat. It'll
:33:47. > :34:18.be the final one. Well, I think it's going to be
:34:19. > :34:22.fascinating to see the time that China post here, Chris because they
:34:23. > :34:27.actually thought they'd completed their ride the last time. They - for
:34:28. > :34:31.any viewers who have just joined a little late to our coverage, when it
:34:32. > :34:39.was stopped and given as a false start a few minutes ago, China's
:34:40. > :34:54.riders didn't hear the whistle and kept going, so they've used up a
:34:55. > :34:58.fair amount of their energy and not long to recover. Well there are gaps
:34:59. > :35:02.in the Polish riders. It is not ideal for the third man. It's pot
:35:03. > :35:04.and in the lead at the moment by nearly a second, so it hasn't cost
:35:05. > :35:08.the Chinese that xraf effort, I think. China have ended up doing two
:35:09. > :35:11.rounds for the price of one here in this first round. They cross the
:35:12. > :35:13.line 43.834. They were slower than Great Britain but it mattered now
:35:14. > :35:19.because they beat their opponent on the other side of the track. !
:35:20. > :35:22.Hopefully in a few moments we will get confirmation of what it all
:35:23. > :35:28.means but Poland there benefitting from the fact that the Chinese team
:35:29. > :35:35.certainly had continued to race when the false start was called the first
:35:36. > :35:39.time around. The Poles are going to get - they might have been a little
:35:40. > :35:44.bit ragged but they are going to get a shot at a medal here. So it should
:35:45. > :35:47.be new zae and the Netherlands, shouldn't it. -- New Zealand and the
:35:48. > :35:54.Netherlands? Yes, that's the way it is going to pan out. New Zealand go
:35:55. > :36:04.in as the hot favourites here and with 0.4 of a second between them
:36:05. > :36:08.and their opponents. So the men's team sprint finishing, just a little
:36:09. > :36:12.later than expected, given the false start in the race. And here is the
:36:13. > :36:30.confirmation: So new did he will be the favourites
:36:31. > :36:41.in the final. The French will be the favourites for the bronze.
:36:42. > :36:44.STUDIO: the frustration is were it on times, Great Britain would be in
:36:45. > :36:49.the bronze medal position. What could they have done differently?
:36:50. > :36:52.Well the first lap was a solid pearl'ance from Jack, Ryan Owens in
:36:53. > :36:57.the first round, the qual figures was exceptionally quick. 12. 5. He
:36:58. > :37:01.went a couple of tenth slower which was the real difference. Joe Truman
:37:02. > :37:04.he would've lined to have gone quicker but fatigue there in his
:37:05. > :37:07.legs, the Dutch had two fresh riders this brought n which was a smart
:37:08. > :37:10.strategy and looking back now with Calum Skinner watching on the
:37:11. > :37:15.sidelines, potentially we could have' brought in a fresh pair of
:37:16. > :37:17.legs for the second rounded or the first round and picked the quickest
:37:18. > :37:23.team for the final. With hindsight it is easy. The Dutch, the French
:37:24. > :37:26.and Aussies all changed their line-up but the Kiwis didn't and
:37:27. > :37:31.they were the quickest. There is not just one way to do but the Dutch
:37:32. > :37:37.excelled in the second ride and unforetoon ately, although they were
:37:38. > :37:42.the fourth quickest team, GB are out. It is a harsh position to be
:37:43. > :37:45.in. You can tell from looking at the guys down there. There is outer
:37:46. > :37:48.dejection there. On the left that's Joe Truman. I don't think they
:37:49. > :37:54.should be disappointed. It is frustrating. I think this is, if you
:37:55. > :37:59.look at it as the first step towards Tokyo they should be proud of the
:38:00. > :38:02.season they've H two gold medals at the world Cups a silver medal at the
:38:03. > :38:04.European Championships last year a fantastic breakthrough on to the
:38:05. > :38:09.international scene at elite level. It is not the medal they wanted but
:38:10. > :38:12.I don't think they should be overly critical and disappointed by the
:38:13. > :38:16.performance. They will feel it but you are right, I mean there's lots
:38:17. > :38:21.of compile and lots of scope and most importantly, lots of depth of
:38:22. > :38:27.talent and as I heard someone say the other day - I either win or you
:38:28. > :38:30.learn. Let's look and hear from Jill and sigh on and Chris Boardman out
:38:31. > :38:33.in Hong Kong about what they expect from these World Championships.
:38:34. > :38:37.It is the year after the Olympics, often we don't see some of the big
:38:38. > :38:41.names they take time off but we have four Olympic champions with the
:38:42. > :38:45.British team, Simon. A young team, average age of 22, 19 riders half of
:38:46. > :38:48.whom have never been to woorld Championships before. So it is a
:38:49. > :38:52.great opportunity for young, British talent to begin to make a mark. And
:38:53. > :38:56.also for one or two of the more established riders to maybe ride
:38:57. > :39:01.other events. It is a ream opportunity, isn't it, Chris, if you
:39:02. > :39:08.think back it minutesk the London Olympics we saw Becky James come to
:39:09. > :39:16.the fore and Sion Yates. -- if you look back to Minsk and we
:39:17. > :39:22.saw Becky James and Simon Yates come to the fore. They have that depth
:39:23. > :39:26.Hynd them. Calum Skinner will be interesting to watch the he was Man
:39:27. > :39:29.of the Match in Rio, the guy who got them the team sprint modesal. Here
:39:30. > :39:33.people expect the perforance for him. He is riding the sprint. It'll
:39:34. > :39:37.be interesting to see how he copes with that status. It is interesting,
:39:38. > :39:40.although the British team has a different strategy coming here w a
:39:41. > :39:43.lot of new faces, it is not necessarily the face with many of
:39:44. > :39:48.the other countries in so. Events. For example, in the women's team
:39:49. > :39:52.pursuit. The United States, led by Sarah Hammer. She's here. They have
:39:53. > :39:58.bought their A-Team. The men's team sprint. New Zealand, they have their
:39:59. > :40:04.best team medals here. And we have a rider who won two medals in London
:40:05. > :40:08.and Vogel, world and Olympic champion. So it'll be a good test.
:40:09. > :40:12.Not a case of everybody sending young riders here. Who are you
:40:13. > :40:15.looking forward to seeing, Chris? I think Katie Archibald riding the
:40:16. > :40:18.individual pursuit. She's known that for a while so she has been
:40:19. > :40:23.focussing that, out of the team events. A great interview, she is
:40:24. > :40:27.really articulate and can express what she is' doing, always good fun
:40:28. > :40:36.to watch. It'll be interesting to see what she can do. That's what I'm
:40:37. > :40:43.watching. What about the women's Maddison on to the schedule. And
:40:44. > :40:46.rumours we might get it back into the Olympics? Well it was a good
:40:47. > :40:48.event in Glasgow a fewp months ago, a great success. Britain have
:40:49. > :40:52.entered for it. It'll be interesting to see who turns up for the other
:40:53. > :40:55.countries. I know there is a Belgium rider who is very a,accomplished
:40:56. > :40:58.road and track rider so some of the top names targeting it. And there is
:40:59. > :41:02.some discussion as it whether this may appear as an additional event in
:41:03. > :41:06.Tokyo for men and women. It was a tragic loss from the Olympics. For
:41:07. > :41:11.me it is the best spectator event in the track. Nightmare as a
:41:12. > :41:15.commentator to work out what is going on, there is action everywhere
:41:16. > :41:20.and sometimes it is hard to know where the bunch is but it is great.
:41:21. > :41:24.It is great there is a woman's one as watch it is still irritating to
:41:25. > :41:28.me that the women's is 20 k shorter than the men's, but one step at a
:41:29. > :41:33.tienchts a good Maddison takes some beat, remember 12 months ago in
:41:34. > :41:38.London, Mark Cavendish and Bradley wiggics brougted the house down,
:41:39. > :41:41.winning the world title again, it is a fantastic race at its best but
:41:42. > :41:51.Chris is right, we kept take our eyes off, it is like a tight-rope
:41:52. > :41:56.workout for us for however long it takes. Do we know the British line
:41:57. > :42:00.up for this? I believe Elinor Barker with Emily Nelson. A lot of people
:42:01. > :42:04.suspected it was Katie Archibald but it is the same day in the programme
:42:05. > :42:08.as individual pursuit which is odd I would put it on the last day and
:42:09. > :42:13.make sure everyone is free so no Maddison for Katie but she has a
:42:14. > :42:18.really good chance in her event. It could be a good day. The first medal
:42:19. > :42:21.has come from Elinor Barker in the scratch race. Her medal ceremony is
:42:22. > :42:26.happening now. Over to Simon.
:42:27. > :42:30.COMMENTATOR: The The silver medal about to be presented to Elinor
:42:31. > :42:38.Barker. So, so close to gold. A fantastic ride. So the silver medal
:42:39. > :42:43.being presented to Elinor Barker. A hint of disappointment. More than a
:42:44. > :42:49.hint of it on her face but it was a superb effort from her. She was near
:42:50. > :42:58.the front for a long time there in that sprint towards the end Hynd
:42:59. > :43:06.Kirsten Wild and so nearly hung on but there is the woman who managed
:43:07. > :43:15.to get past her in the final few metres, Barbieri from Italy. Just
:43:16. > :43:21.23. Second on a stage of the Tour Down Under. Nirted Maddison in Los
:43:22. > :43:28.Angeles in the World Cup earlier this year. -- third in the Maddison.
:43:29. > :43:39.She has the jersey placed over her shoulder.
:43:40. > :43:46.I think she was as surprised as everybody there. She thought Wild
:43:47. > :43:49.was going to be the one to beat but it was Elinor Barker, the
:43:50. > :43:58.22-year-old from Cardiff who was the toughest to get past. A good race.
:43:59. > :44:06.Some big names in it, too, drawn in for the endurance races here at this
:44:07. > :44:14.World Championship. Some interesting souvenirs to take home as well.
:44:15. > :44:17.Eleanor marker not riding in the team pursuit earlier today,
:44:18. > :44:22.concentrating on this one, the women's scratch race, 40 laps of the
:44:23. > :44:27.track which soar nearly yielded a gold medal for Great Britain and for
:44:28. > :45:36.her. The crowd now stand for the Italian National Anthem.
:45:37. > :45:40.APPLAUSE As the Italians celebrate. Eleanor
:45:41. > :45:48.break had her on the edge of our seat. Out of our Saturdays. --
:45:49. > :45:51.Elinor Barker. Out of our seats. But it wasn't her today but Great
:45:52. > :45:55.Britain on the board on the very first day of the World Track Chipts
:45:56. > :46:02.thanks to Elinor Barker in the women's scratch race.
:46:03. > :46:06.STUDIO: Tears for the woman who got the rainbow jersey in Germany.
:46:07. > :46:11.I love that National Anthem. It is great. In the event of a great
:46:12. > :46:17.Briton not winning, I don't mind that. Jo, the Canadian team crashed
:46:18. > :46:22.out in qualifying for this next event. You know some of these guys
:46:23. > :46:26.Yes, so qualification for team pursuit used to happen on your own,
:46:27. > :46:31.you were the only team on the track but now to save time they do two at
:46:32. > :46:38.the same time. New Zealand were quicker than Canada, caught them,
:46:39. > :46:42.passed them and a New Zealander caught front wheel of a rider here
:46:43. > :46:45.to brings them all down and race over for them. New Zealand did an
:46:46. > :46:49.incredible time so well done for them but for the Canadian guys they
:46:50. > :46:53.didn't qualify for Rio. They haven't been up oven the world stage until
:46:54. > :46:58.this season until they got bronze at the World Cup in Glasgow and won the
:46:59. > :47:01.World Cup in November so they were hoping for a good performance today
:47:02. > :47:04.but that was all ended in just in seconds there by that crash and
:47:05. > :47:08.personally, I don't think you should have two teams on the track at the
:47:09. > :47:12.same time for qualification, because, it's difficult to rank the
:47:13. > :47:16.teams, especially if people have new names coming in, like we did. It can
:47:17. > :47:19.make it unfair, it can affect your race if you have to overtake
:47:20. > :47:23.somebody t can slow you down and similarly you can be slowed down if
:47:24. > :47:27.people are overtaking you and it used to be purely on your own, on
:47:28. > :47:30.the track, set your qualification time, now to save time they've done
:47:31. > :47:35.this, which resulted in an accident which is a real shame. I think the
:47:36. > :47:39.GB guys may have been slowed down slightly. They weren't able it fan
:47:40. > :47:44.out for the finish because they had been overtaken and they sat up and
:47:45. > :47:53.finished racing but we had half a lap to go. A reaction from Chris
:47:54. > :47:59.Boardman out in Hong Kong. Ye, I watched the qualification earlier
:48:00. > :48:02.today and Ian Dyer and I the British coach had a good look at the footage
:48:03. > :48:06.of that earlier today. We are not convinced they got it ride because
:48:07. > :48:11.the New Zealand fourth man, in his absolute desperation to stay on the
:48:12. > :48:14.wheel, actually touched the Canadians shoulder and caused the
:48:15. > :48:20.inability to caused him to bounce into the wheel. At first you think
:48:21. > :48:24.it was insult and injury. I totally agree with Jo, by putting two teams
:48:25. > :48:29.on the track you are kind of asking for dhivend trouble. So the event is
:48:30. > :48:34.almost designed to cause a problem but it was that unusual touch that
:48:35. > :48:38.caused the instability. One thing that interested me and maybe Jo will
:48:39. > :48:44.have a word on this, Australia were close to the World Record with their
:48:45. > :48:48.time. Did this stop them from breaking the World Record
:48:49. > :48:51.potentially? I think really all that comes into the mix, about
:48:52. > :48:54.qualification times, when you get catches like, that I don't think
:48:55. > :48:57.we'll see that again. They knew they were going after t really, weren't
:48:58. > :49:03.they? They knew it was an opportunity for them. For gnaws that
:49:04. > :49:06.qualification, as well, normally the qualification times are slower than
:49:07. > :49:11.final times because you are there on the track, if you don't have the
:49:12. > :49:15.circulating air for another team for circulating air for the same power
:49:16. > :49:19.output you go faster, that lends itself to now, faster times in
:49:20. > :49:23.qualifying but Australia would've got a big game for chasing GB but
:49:24. > :49:27.having to get over them that would've slowed them down, yes they
:49:28. > :49:30.were close to the World Record but I don't think they would've been that
:49:31. > :49:36.close if they were on their own, so a slight advantage for them but
:49:37. > :49:48.overall I think it is a bad idea personally.
:49:49. > :49:55.Well what you gain with one hand, you lose with the other It made for
:49:56. > :49:57.interesting viewers It certainly was spectacular. We are now in the
:49:58. > :49:59.second round. They were stacked up on the track all four of them. Here
:50:00. > :50:27.we are with Russia and Belgium. W this should be the closest of
:50:28. > :50:30.matches, between these two. A full second between them with Russia
:50:31. > :50:37.getting the advantage in the previous round on time. They've
:50:38. > :50:43.moved into the needs now. The slenderest of leads. The width of a
:50:44. > :50:47.Thai. That's as small as it gets, I remember Chris Hoy winning a
:50:48. > :50:51.Championship by that margin, may have been the Commonwealth Games.
:50:52. > :50:56.Well one of his big titles was by 1,000th of a second but it doesn't
:50:57. > :51:03.matter if it is by 10 m or 1,000th of a second you still get the med A
:51:04. > :51:07.Russia increasing their lead. They are very consistent, Russia.
:51:08. > :51:12.Slightly slower than their previous round in this opening kilometre. But
:51:13. > :51:18.they might be cautious. Both teams technically riding very, very well.
:51:19. > :51:21.It took them a while to get into their stride but they both look neat
:51:22. > :51:24.at the moment. Often this event is decided by the
:51:25. > :51:28.people who make the least mistakes. You see a change where a rider goes
:51:29. > :51:32.up and comes down late and has to drive to get back into the
:51:33. > :51:38.slipstream. Or comes down earlier as we have seen with Russia and that
:51:39. > :51:40.energy they expend readjusting their speed, recalibrating into the team,
:51:41. > :51:44.that can really hurt you later on and they are down to three already.
:51:45. > :51:49.It's really early for the Russians to be down to three riders. Yes,
:51:50. > :51:55.they have a long, long way to go. It'll feel a whole lot longer as W
:51:56. > :51:59.Both teams made late changes to their line-ups ahead of this. Not
:52:00. > :52:04.quite as the start sheet is suggesting here. But Russia down to
:52:05. > :52:09.their core group of three. These three have to stick together. It
:52:10. > :52:14.looks like they are finding it tough Being stretched. When you change to
:52:15. > :52:17.three it alters the change completely. You have to be sharper,
:52:18. > :52:21.shallower and those small ditcheses can really make a dimplts they are
:52:22. > :52:29.going well, though. They have a good buffer. -- make a difference.
:52:30. > :52:40.They have 1.6 seconds. Going away. Belgium still look organised. We are
:52:41. > :52:43.seeing a lot of Russian trio but Belgium doing well About a minute of
:52:44. > :52:55.racing left. A So with pretty much even pacing now
:52:56. > :52:59.but Russia did the work early now and they can sniff the finish line
:53:00. > :53:03.now. They are pushing away. A big turn on the front. Well they got it
:53:04. > :53:07.wrong, they finished on the wrong lap. All of them just straightened
:53:08. > :53:11.up with a lap to go and have had to get back on to the bottom of the
:53:12. > :53:21.track. You don't see that very often. Now they are coming up and
:53:22. > :53:39.sprinting for the line. And Belgium, crossing the line in 4. -- 4.017223.
:53:40. > :53:43.Well we'll wait for confirmation. It is such a shame. The Russians
:53:44. > :53:50.actually finished a lap early. I hope we get this in replay. On board
:53:51. > :53:55.camera showing you what it is like to be in the seat at these speeds as
:53:56. > :54:01.they lead into the 45 degree banking. They all came around with a
:54:02. > :54:07.lap to go and were convinced it was the finish line and just blew their
:54:08. > :54:15.advantage and they were so lucky to have that buffer to play with,
:54:16. > :54:21.weren't they? Russia hanging in there, despite the fact they lost
:54:22. > :54:26.one rider fairly early on. Ye, and the mishap. They made a mistake but
:54:27. > :54:32.they quickly got back on the game there. Great Britain coming up on to
:54:33. > :54:38.the track. Andy Tennant there, nearest the camera. They've made a
:54:39. > :54:41.couple of changes. Steven Burke and Kian Emadi dropped out from the
:54:42. > :54:46.qualifying round. Chris Latham coming in. Latham won a silver medal
:54:47. > :54:52.in the World Cup earlier last winter. Mark Stewart, the Scotsman
:54:53. > :54:59.coming in as W Andy Tennant, remember the World Champion a few
:55:00. > :55:03.years ago in 2012. Ollie Woods who races for the Wiggins' team is the
:55:04. > :55:08.other rider makingp the quartet for Great Britain. They were the fifth
:55:09. > :55:12.fastest qualifiers earlier today: It'll be interesting to see what
:55:13. > :55:21.this change is going to mavenlingt changing two men is quite unusual.
:55:22. > :55:28.Away they go. Andy Tennant will lead off for the first lap or so for
:55:29. > :55:32.Great Britain A very different look to the Great Britain team to what
:55:33. > :55:43.which we saw in the Olympic Games last year. It is a tough job to get
:55:44. > :55:46.this team going. Steven Burke has historically been man 1 in the team
:55:47. > :56:00.pursuit. Well that really falling to Andy Tennant. The winners
:56:01. > :56:06.of heat three and four, this is heat 2, they will go for gold and silver.
:56:07. > :56:10.The remaining 16, which includes Great Britain, will be ranked by
:56:11. > :56:13.their time in the first round and will be paired as follow. The two
:56:14. > :56:17.fastest teams will ride for the bronze. So unlike the other event.
:56:18. > :56:23.It is all to play for here Yes the time all important. All these
:56:24. > :56:26.produced so that they produce strategic riding making sure they
:56:27. > :56:32.have to fight for every step of the way. That's what the British team
:56:33. > :56:37.are doing now. The very, very successful coach of the British team
:56:38. > :56:40.in the track centre now indicating they are slightly away of schedule.
:56:41. > :56:49.They are happy with the way this is going. Here we are with the on board
:56:50. > :56:57.camera taking you into the thick of the racing. All of the teams have to
:56:58. > :56:59.agree to carry these cameras. So it is an aerodynamic disadvantage but
:57:00. > :57:04.it is evenly spread amongst the teams. And it certainly gives you be
:57:05. > :57:13.an insight into what this racing is all about. Nine laps to go as they
:57:14. > :57:18.cross the line this time. Riding on the front is Ollie Wood. Great
:57:19. > :57:22.Britain team pursuit winners in the Glasgow round of the World Cup last
:57:23. > :57:28.winter. He was one of the riders in that. It was a big turn. Yes, a big
:57:29. > :57:31.turn as you say from Ollie Wood, the 21-year-old. Still very much on
:57:32. > :57:34.schedule here. Going through two kilometres in two minutes. Slightly
:57:35. > :57:43.slower than they were this morning. But good enough to put them
:57:44. > :57:47.one-and-a-half seconds in front of the Swiss but the time, so, so
:57:48. > :57:50.important in this one. I think they are measuring their effort W they're
:57:51. > :57:55.being shown that they are bang on schedule now. And still hurting
:57:56. > :57:59.around the bottom of the track, at the front mark, Stewart. He peels
:58:00. > :58:03.away. A high change There the benefit of going that high up the
:58:04. > :58:08.track is even if you do come down a little bit late, you can carry that
:58:09. > :58:11.extra bit of speed down and close up quickly, which is exactly what he
:58:12. > :58:25.did. Chris Latham there, just joining on the back Hynd Stewart.
:58:26. > :58:29.And be-Hynd Stewart. Andy Tennant has dropped off the
:58:30. > :58:33.back for Great Britain. He put the effort in to get them under way.
:58:34. > :58:38.They are two and a third seconds ahead now. It is' really starting to
:58:39. > :58:42.hurt now but all it play for, for Great Britain. They can see the
:58:43. > :58:47.Swiss ahead of them at the other end of the straight as they move into
:58:48. > :58:51.the last few seconds. Mark Stewart leading the way for Great Britain
:58:52. > :58:55.now. ' Probably peel off as they GP around the banking next time. He
:58:56. > :59:00.does that. Indeed now. Chris Latham takes up the running and he has
:59:01. > :59:05.Ollie Wood right on his wheel. They'll take the bell as they cross
:59:06. > :59:10.the line, this time just 250 m to G it is all about the time. Well, they
:59:11. > :59:14.are riding well and finishing very strongly. That steady and middle
:59:15. > :59:20.section I think is paying dividends now, driving for the line. Here come
:59:21. > :59:28.the British trio over the line. 3. 56. 796, quicker than the qualifying
:59:29. > :59:32.round earlier. A much smoother performance from them. A really good
:59:33. > :59:36.use of efforts. Long and short-term getting the best out of the team,
:59:37. > :59:39.rather than everybody trying to do even two seconds faster. They are
:59:40. > :59:45.going to have to be pleased with that. It is a world class time and a
:59:46. > :59:49.World Championship. Andy Tennant, a different effort to what we have
:59:50. > :59:53.seen in the team sprint so far. Once you get this started, you've got
:59:54. > :59:57.nearly four minutes of riding you have to contend with afterwards and
:59:58. > :00:01.of course, Andy Tennant when he's done that start, he has to get on to
:00:02. > :00:06.the back and into shelter, having had that effort, whilst the team is
:00:07. > :00:10.still trying to accelerate. It is a tough job. Certainly a decent ride
:00:11. > :00:15.from Great Britain in that first round. Well, many World
:00:16. > :00:18.Championships have been won with times slower than that. The real
:00:19. > :00:21.difference here is the way that nations like Australia were riding
:00:22. > :00:24.when we saw them a little while ago in that qualifying ride. We'll see
:00:25. > :00:29.them out on the track again. It will 's be interesting to see how they
:00:30. > :00:33.back up that first performance where they very nearly broke the World
:00:34. > :00:37.Record. We talked about them getting a catch, didn't we? They had the
:00:38. > :00:41.benefit of the slipstreaming but then had to go around the traffic
:00:42. > :00:46.for extra distance now they are going so quick it is possible they
:00:47. > :00:49.could get another catch or a close catch, your absolute ideal, you
:00:50. > :00:52.don't quite meet the team in front, they just carry you through that
:00:53. > :00:55.last kilometre. I will be surprised if they don't try to do the same
:00:56. > :00:58.thing again but probably assuming they will go all the way through
:00:59. > :01:03.they'll be saving that for the final.
:01:04. > :01:10.Just to remind you, the winners of this heat coming up and the next
:01:11. > :01:14.will race for the world title a little bit later on. New Zealand and
:01:15. > :01:16.Italy now and then after that you have Australia and France. It will
:01:17. > :01:25.be a battle royale between those two. I think New Zealand -- I'm
:01:26. > :01:29.surprised New Zealand are still in the competition to be honest. I know
:01:30. > :01:33.it wasn't intentional but that touch of shoulders caused the crash with
:01:34. > :01:37.the Canadians. Do you think the Canadians pulled off the top of the
:01:38. > :01:41.track because he thought the gap was there? He had just been tapped on
:01:42. > :01:44.the shoulder. You lean against it to counterbalance and then suddenly
:01:45. > :01:50.there is a wheel in front of you and there is nowhere to go. As Joe Rawal
:01:51. > :01:56.-- as Joanna Rowsell said earlier on, think it is a fault with the
:01:57. > :02:06.format in the qualifying which means that that kind of thing is going to
:02:07. > :02:12.happen. Away they go, plenty of experience in the Netherlands's
:02:13. > :02:17.line-up. Filippo Ganna, he is still just 20 years of age for Italy, but
:02:18. > :02:23.he blasted his way around to win the individual pursuit title, so what a
:02:24. > :02:33.fantastic young talent he is. Francesco Lamon is the final young
:02:34. > :02:37.rider for the Italians. Fantastic time in qualifying, 3.55, very
:02:38. > :02:41.respectable. I mention Filippo Ganna and in that context I should have
:02:42. > :02:48.mentioned Simoni, Sony in the context of good young riders. He won
:02:49. > :02:53.the under 20 Three Rd race championship in 2015. The New
:02:54. > :03:01.Zealanders should have the edge here and they have certainly got the
:03:02. > :03:03.experience. The coach at the start of the track using a difference
:03:04. > :03:10.Chatterjee and showing them their lap speed. -- different strategy.
:03:11. > :03:16.Not much in it after the opening kilometre. Very close but pacing
:03:17. > :03:21.your ride is so important here. New Zealand behind at the minute but
:03:22. > :03:25.there is nothing in it at all. Have the Italians got the staying power
:03:26. > :03:29.to hang in there with New Zealand? They are the underdogs here but they
:03:30. > :03:32.are putting the pressure on. Two seconds between the previous round
:03:33. > :03:37.but we have said time and again it's about backing that up and being able
:03:38. > :03:45.to repeat that performance. It could come down to who it is that makes
:03:46. > :03:50.the mistakes. It is Liam Bertazzo, who wrote the Giro d'Italia last
:03:51. > :03:54.year, who leads the way. They have got plenty of writers and endurance
:03:55. > :03:57.and staying power in this squad. It's actually the New Zealanders
:03:58. > :04:00.that are going slightly slower in this round, the Italians raising
:04:01. > :04:12.their game to chase for a medal opportunity. New Zealand have got
:04:13. > :04:18.themselves in front by nearly a second now. Very interesting
:04:19. > :04:24.handlebar design, sometimes limbs put in place at the front of the
:04:25. > :04:31.bike to deflect air around the body. Everything counts when you're going
:04:32. > :04:37.this fast. First technical observation of this championship.
:04:38. > :04:39.It's taken longer than usual! New Zealand with their interesting
:04:40. > :04:45.design, looking very impressive here. 1.73 seconds their advantage
:04:46. > :04:52.with five laps to go. New Zealand sailing along serenely here, heading
:04:53. > :04:58.for the World Championship final. Still with the four riders. Both of
:04:59. > :05:02.these squads still with their full comes on out there on the track.
:05:03. > :05:07.Well done to the Italians for fighting hard all the way through
:05:08. > :05:11.this. They looked like they were really pushing on but they are
:05:12. > :05:14.paying the price now. They tried to take it to New Zealand for as long
:05:15. > :05:19.as they could, to try to hang in there. New Zealand so good, hard to
:05:20. > :05:24.live within this sort of situation. New Zealand are actually going to
:05:25. > :05:29.post a very similar time to this morning, round about 3.53. The only
:05:30. > :05:36.team at the moment who I think challenge Australia. Down to three
:05:37. > :05:41.as they come round to take the bell. They take the bell, 215 metres to
:05:42. > :05:47.go. The New Zealanders are cracking and the Italians are not 1 million
:05:48. > :05:50.miles away, you know. This is a really spirited effort from the
:05:51. > :05:58.Italians. They are sticking together well here. Remember, it is a
:05:59. > :06:05.third... Well, they had enough in the bag but they fought all the way,
:06:06. > :06:10.didn't they. Italy are 3.55 .945, the Italians have gone quicker than
:06:11. > :06:14.Great Britain. It was a good ride by them. New Zealand too have moved
:06:15. > :06:17.themselves forward, so they can be pleased with that. I beg your
:06:18. > :06:22.pardon, they've gone slightly backwards. But those times quick
:06:23. > :06:28.enough to do the job. So, New Zealand, as a winner of heat three,
:06:29. > :06:30.according to our sheets, that means they will go through to race for
:06:31. > :06:45.gold and silver a little bit later on. New Zealand only going down to
:06:46. > :06:50.three riders fairly late in the day. Trying to push to make sure they got
:06:51. > :06:53.in the final, but keeping a little bit in reserve, if that's possible,
:06:54. > :06:58.in a situation like this, with races coming back to back. Looked smooth
:06:59. > :07:01.until the last couple of laps and then cracks just starting to show.
:07:02. > :07:05.They've been put under pressure, they had to fight for that one. It
:07:06. > :07:09.wasn't a given by any means, they had to fight for an easy around. But
:07:10. > :07:19.they knew they had to post a good time as well. The men's team pursuit
:07:20. > :07:24.finals tomorrow night at 12:53pm lunch time UK time, we are seven
:07:25. > :07:26.hours ahead here. They will have a bit of recovery time overnight ahead
:07:27. > :07:35.of those finals. But here come Australia now. Up against France.
:07:36. > :07:40.Sam Welsford, the 21-year-old from Western Australia, Cameron Meyer,
:07:41. > :07:46.vast Lee experienced, he is in this quartet as well. Kelland O'Brien at
:07:47. > :07:56.18, at the opposite end of his career. And Porter as well for
:07:57. > :08:01.Australia. Away they go. This is a very young team for France. They
:08:02. > :08:07.were second in Glasgow in the World Cup last winter. These four riders,
:08:08. > :08:10.the four riders in the blue of France, are the European Champions
:08:11. > :08:15.Cup they won that last year. We've been talking about the Australians
:08:16. > :08:20.going to the final and they are certainly the quickest by far in the
:08:21. > :08:22.previous round, but you've got to actually do it again and they have
:08:23. > :08:28.certainly started blisteringly quickly. They have the French, to be
:08:29. > :08:33.fair. But the Australians are on top of it. They are trailing a little
:08:34. > :08:39.bit but they will be happy. There was a confident out of the blocks.
:08:40. > :08:45.Such depth of experience amongst them here. I will be waiting to see
:08:46. > :08:49.how they back up their ride from earlier in the day. They were so
:08:50. > :08:53.impressive in the league qualifiers. They are real fighters. We've just
:08:54. > :08:59.seen a little bit of a sloppy change but that is the way they write, on
:09:00. > :09:03.the ragged edge. They may pay a little bit for that opening time and
:09:04. > :09:07.I will be surprised if they get near that again. But I don't think
:09:08. > :09:11.they're going to mind. They just now need to do enough. They've got all
:09:12. > :09:16.the times in front of them, they know what they need to do. Still ten
:09:17. > :09:25.and a half laps to go. Australia with a distinct slower opening...
:09:26. > :09:28.Well, it's not a distinct advantage for Australia at all, France going
:09:29. > :09:37.well here. But it's close enough and they will be riding to a schedule
:09:38. > :09:42.here, you feel. The French are really excelling. I think they might
:09:43. > :09:46.be paying for this one but like Italy, they're just going to take it
:09:47. > :09:51.to them and why not? Sam Welsford on the front for Australia at the
:09:52. > :09:54.moment. The French are in bits already, I'm afraid. They've lost a
:09:55. > :10:03.man more than halfway through the race. Thomas was struggling to hold
:10:04. > :10:08.onto the wheel there. It's all over for them now. It's a long way to go
:10:09. > :10:14.when you've lost 25% of your engine power. Alex Porter on the front for
:10:15. > :10:19.Australia. They look very comfortable, very impressive and is
:10:20. > :10:28.vertically -- is vertically ... This event looks great. It looks
:10:29. > :10:35.like they're almost not trying. Very fluid. You see what has been going
:10:36. > :10:38.on in the wheels... We're talking around 800 watts of power on the
:10:39. > :10:42.front here and they barely get a rest on the back before they've got
:10:43. > :10:46.to do it again. It's a series of sprints now, so fast. We're talking
:10:47. > :10:55.about what it must look -- what it looks like but not how it must feel
:10:56. > :10:57.like, it will be... Not quite looking like France are riding
:10:58. > :11:01.through treacle but Australia started to reel them in. They are
:11:02. > :11:04.almost in the same straight. Australia have three laps to go and
:11:05. > :11:08.they are heading for a World Championship final, which will be a
:11:09. > :11:12.good race against New Zealand, by the looks of it. Two and a half
:11:13. > :11:15.seconds slower at this point than their previous round but that's OK,
:11:16. > :11:22.they are getting information from their previous round. France
:11:23. > :11:28.collapsing fast now in these closing stages. Less than half a minute of
:11:29. > :11:33.racing to go now and they will be happy when it's over. One lap to go
:11:34. > :11:37.for Australia. All still together, looking really good here in pursuit
:11:38. > :11:42.of a world title that has eluded them since 2012, the last time the
:11:43. > :11:48.championships were held down under in Melbourne, Australia coming up
:11:49. > :11:53.and over the line. That is the time that they could have beaten if they
:11:54. > :11:56.had needed to do so. They didn't even need to qualify fastest but
:11:57. > :12:01.they did it anyway. They are relieved that one is out of the way,
:12:02. > :12:09.I think. They did enough. They've not show you what else they've got.
:12:10. > :12:12.They did it comfortably. Good rides from Australia and New Zealand in
:12:13. > :12:14.those last two heats. STUDIO
:12:15. > :12:17.The gold medal race will be Australia against New Zealand and
:12:18. > :12:21.the good news for Great Britain is that they are into a bronze medal
:12:22. > :12:24.race and that will be against Italy. For the men's team sprint, a time
:12:25. > :12:28.that was fast enough that would have put them into a bronze medal race
:12:29. > :12:31.but because they lost to the Netherlands they couldn't get there,
:12:32. > :12:33.the way the format works. Let's get the reaction of Jack Carlin, Ryan
:12:34. > :12:44.Owens and Joe Truman. Well, Jack, your first ever time on
:12:45. > :12:46.the World Championship 's stage, so disappointing to miss out on a gold
:12:47. > :12:50.medal race but how pleased are you with the way you've been able to
:12:51. > :12:54.perform here? I think as a team we came here with not much expectation.
:12:55. > :13:01.We obviously are all disappointed because we wanted to be in the gold
:13:02. > :13:05.medal ride off, any gold medal ride offs in general. It's just
:13:06. > :13:08.disappointing. But it just didn't happen, there were better teams
:13:09. > :13:12.there today and it just didn't come together well for us. I think it
:13:13. > :13:15.does show the depth in this British sprint team. You had an incredibly
:13:16. > :13:22.blistering start you have been able to give this team. Yeah, there were
:13:23. > :13:26.positives and negatives in the race. You're right, there's a lot of depth
:13:27. > :13:32.with us and a lot of positives to take from today. Ryan, I must say,
:13:33. > :13:36.hugely impressive ride from you again. Just how pleased are you with
:13:37. > :13:41.the way that this season has gone? Picking up a couple of gold medals
:13:42. > :13:47.in World Cups and that European silver. Obviously we've had a dream
:13:48. > :13:52.run up till now really. We are still pretty close to our best time ever
:13:53. > :13:57.today. Still really disappointed. We've come here with the form of our
:13:58. > :14:00.lives and a few little technical things could have done differently
:14:01. > :14:03.and it would have been a very different story. It's encouraging
:14:04. > :14:08.for us to know going forward that we can polish that up in the next few
:14:09. > :14:12.rights and then we could be onto a real winner and hopefully next time
:14:13. > :14:15.the result will be different. I certainly think the rest of the
:14:16. > :14:18.world will be looking at this young team and thinking where do they keep
:14:19. > :14:24.producing these young maiden sprinters from, Joe? We've got a
:14:25. > :14:27.good group of guys working at the velodrome and we have got a
:14:28. > :14:32.fantastic support team around us. I can't thank them enough for having
:14:33. > :14:36.progressed as well. We haven't really been fully able to execute
:14:37. > :14:40.today but as I say, we win as a team, lose as a team. We work
:14:41. > :14:44.together as a team. Not just the rest of the world that will be
:14:45. > :14:47.watching on with interest, Jason Kenny, Callum, Philip Heintz will be
:14:48. > :14:52.looking at the times you've been able to put in and hoping they can
:14:53. > :14:56.still hold onto a place! Of course, we're all battling for those
:14:57. > :14:59.positions and they have been helping a sale of building towards today.
:15:00. > :15:04.Even this morning I spoke to Callum about something in my own right.
:15:05. > :15:08.They've all been a big help for us to be able to get to this point
:15:09. > :15:12.really. Just a shame when not going to be fully able to execute what
:15:13. > :15:15.we're capable of today. A top five finish, for fastest on the day, you
:15:16. > :15:17.should be very proud of that. Cheers.
:15:18. > :15:23.A case of what might have been, Chris, but they're being very mature
:15:24. > :15:27.about it. I think it's good to see disappointment, it showed ambition
:15:28. > :15:30.and hunger. You got to take the positives. The cat Jack Carlin come
:15:31. > :15:39.his first lap was the quickest of any team. A 12.53 was truly world
:15:40. > :15:42.class. When they get it right on the day they are as good as any team. It
:15:43. > :15:49.didn't quite work out for them today. We've got a great squad, not
:15:50. > :15:54.just those three, Phil and Callum and Jason. It's a formidable squad.

:38:11. > :38:13.British cycling without trying to dismiss any of the allegations that
:38:14. > :38:17.have been made or any of the issues made, many of which British cycling
:38:18. > :38:22.have taken on board and are working hard to deal with. We are seeing
:38:23. > :38:25.more and more cyclists coming forward, pointing out that perhaps
:38:26. > :38:29.some of the things that have made it to the press don't necessarilip
:38:30. > :38:34.represent their experiences. D necessarily represent. And certainly
:38:35. > :38:37.in the experiences I have had, and more importantly in the last 24-48
:38:38. > :38:44.hours here, they don't represent what I see. What I see is a group of
:38:45. > :38:48.athletes that are know cowed on their game -- that are focussed on
:38:49. > :38:51.their game. A group of support staff who are passionate about delivering
:38:52. > :38:54.the best performance. Everyone is very conscious about that. They are
:38:55. > :38:57.conscious about some of the issue that is have gone on in the past but
:38:58. > :39:01.more importantly they are focussed on what they need to do here in
:39:02. > :39:06.terms of their own roles and getting stuck into that and, so, it'll be a
:39:07. > :39:10.great opportunity, as I say, to regain that public confidence and
:39:11. > :39:17.hopefully give the British public pride in the performances that we
:39:18. > :39:18.are used to, in terms of those fantastic medal-winning
:39:19. > :39:22.performances, like World Championships and Olympic Games and
:39:23. > :39:26.Paralympic Games and also the confidence in how we're achieving
:39:27. > :39:30.those performances. Previous income bants have all come from a cycling
:39:31. > :39:35.background, you have come in completely left field with no
:39:36. > :39:39.experience as a coach in cycling, or as a cyclist yourself. Can you
:39:40. > :39:43.achieve success without that background in the sport? Yes, I'm
:39:44. > :39:47.absolutely confident of that. I wouldn't be here if I didn't feel I
:39:48. > :39:50.was confident in being able to do that. I'm in the here trying to
:39:51. > :39:54.replace the people that have gone before me. They have done a
:39:55. > :39:56.fantastic job. I suppose I'm bringing a different type of
:39:57. > :40:02.knowledge but the same level of passion and I would hope the same
:40:03. > :40:05.level of application. We have got some fantastic technical brains
:40:06. > :40:10.within the sport so hopefully it's really not so much -- I'm not
:40:11. > :40:14.looking at telling them what needs to happen I'm looking at providing
:40:15. > :40:24.Chalabi en, direction, support and leadership to the team as a whole
:40:25. > :40:27.and I think -- at providing a challenge, direction support and
:40:28. > :40:31.leadership to the team and I hope we can' deliver those performances to
:40:32. > :40:43.get to Tokyo 2020. It is not the first time that somebody has moved
:40:44. > :40:47.from one sport to a completely different one but it is the first
:40:48. > :40:50.time in cycling, what is your reaction to this appointment? Well I
:40:51. > :40:53.think he's level headed. He has shown he can lead a team that's very
:40:54. > :40:56.competitive and can deliver at the highest level at the Olympic Games
:40:57. > :40:59.and he is not underestimating the challenge. It'll be a huge challenge
:41:00. > :41:03.for him but I think a great opportunity for him to come in and
:41:04. > :41:06.really try to look forward. A lot of negativity in the press for the last
:41:07. > :41:09.year surrounding the team but I think it is about focussing on the
:41:10. > :41:13.good side of the sport. The good side of the things we have been
:41:14. > :41:16.doing as a team and look to the future. It gives a a chance as well
:41:17. > :41:20.for a completely new perspective. I think it is really exciting. I think
:41:21. > :41:24.it's very easy for anybody in any walk of life to get set of noe your
:41:25. > :41:28.ways. And always do things the same way but to have a new person come in
:41:29. > :41:30.with a very different perspective of things, from a very successful sport
:41:31. > :41:33.but a different sport, I think it's a really exciting time, to be part
:41:34. > :41:37.of British psychingling. I really hope he makes some good chance
:41:38. > :41:42.changes and I'm excited about the future. As I mentioned the
:41:43. > :41:49.independent review isn't public but cycling have come up with a
:41:50. > :41:56.response, pre-empting it. They've created a new role, an HR-type role,
:41:57. > :41:59.really trying to focus not just on performance but also on supporting
:42:00. > :42:06.the athletes during their career and when they time comes to retire or
:42:07. > :42:08.not make the grade or team. I think it's a really positive,
:42:09. > :42:15.forward-thinking way to approach it. So we have a new CEO Julie
:42:16. > :42:19.Harrington. We've got Stephen Park obviously and a new team management
:42:20. > :42:22.set-up but it is recognising that there were areas, where they had
:42:23. > :42:25.fallen short and hadn't given support to the athletes that they
:42:26. > :42:28.might have done but I would say for all there has been negativity about
:42:29. > :42:32.the team, there's still a lot of positivity. A lot of people
:42:33. > :42:40.supporting them, saying that that isn't necessarily the #1350er7bs
:42:41. > :42:45.they've had in their - the experience they've had within their
:42:46. > :42:50.time within the team. I it is not that that makes the papers. I think
:42:51. > :42:54.you think that's not been balanced Well, the problem is, the people who
:42:55. > :42:58.are motivated to complain and have rights to complain, but the people
:42:59. > :43:02.motivated to complain go forward to give their side in the independent
:43:03. > :43:04.review whereas a lot of the athletes who've had a neutral or positive
:43:05. > :43:09.experience haven't gone and given their side of the story. So it can
:43:10. > :43:12.seem skewed, so that isn't to say that the opinions of those people
:43:13. > :43:16.who have come forward aren't valid, they are, but I think perhaps it can
:43:17. > :43:20.be a skewed perspective. British cycling trying to get back on the
:43:21. > :43:24.front foot and a performance at these World Championships could be
:43:25. > :43:28.ignited. More to come tomorrow. A fantastic silver medal today for
:43:29. > :43:37.Elinor Barker in the scratch race. Tomorrow we have Katy Marchant In
:43:38. > :43:44.the sprint. Goodbye for now. I have never known
:43:45. > :44:08.an atmosphere like this.
