:00:35. > :00:43.You Good afternoon and welcome to coverage of the second day of the
:00:44. > :00:48.World Track Cycling Championships. We will be live in Hong Kong. One of
:00:49. > :00:52.the feature races today is the keirin, the race that kept us on the
:00:53. > :00:56.edge of our seats last Sumner Rio and delayed the news.
:00:57. > :01:02.-- last summer. Jason Kenny, can he claim a sixth?
:01:03. > :01:05.I'm worried to tempt fate. Time for quick legs and a cool head. And they
:01:06. > :01:10.are off, in the Olympic final. Moving up into second. He wants to
:01:11. > :01:14.get into that pole spot as quickly as possible. He is going to try to
:01:15. > :01:15.take this one from the front and it is on. Here we go.
:01:16. > :01:16.as possible. He is going to try to take this one from the front and it
:01:17. > :01:20.is on. Here we go. They overlapped the bike. And they overlapped the
:01:21. > :01:25.bike right at the very last moment. Well, I don't know who did that, and
:01:26. > :01:31.we have to hope that that wasn't Jason Kenny. The officials looking
:01:32. > :01:38.at the footage and the tension could not be higher here now. Kenny or
:01:39. > :01:43.Awang set to be penalised. Somebody is going to pay the price. Well Ian
:01:44. > :01:49.Dyer, is keen ton point something out. All the riders able it stay in
:01:50. > :01:54.the race is what they have announced. He leads the sprint now
:01:55. > :01:58.with one lap to go. He is chasing him hard. Jason Kenny has work to
:01:59. > :02:02.do. He has a gap to close. He is closing it. Here he comes. He has to
:02:03. > :02:09.go around the outside. Against Kenny now. Into the finishing straight.
:02:10. > :02:13.Jason Kenny's got T what a ride. It's a golden hat-trick in Rio for
:02:14. > :02:20.Jason Kenny. -- Jason Kenny's got it.
:02:21. > :02:24.A record-equalling sixth gold medal. If that's not worth a standing
:02:25. > :02:29.ovation, I don't know what is. It gives me goose bumps watching that
:02:30. > :02:36.again and Sir Chris Hoy, the man whose record Jason Kenny equalled is
:02:37. > :02:40.alongside me with Jo Russell Shand. Raus tranchtss gets the heart rate
:02:41. > :02:46.going. It was incredible and with a second false start it made it more
:02:47. > :02:58.tense. A cracking night. Unfortunately Jason is not competing
:02:59. > :03:08.at these chips. We have Joe Truman, but it is a big ask to get a medal.
:03:09. > :03:16.Here is what is coming up. The men's team pursuit features a battle for
:03:17. > :03:20.Great Britain for bronze. They will be up against Italy. For the women's
:03:21. > :03:33.team pursuit, can they make it into a medal race? That is their aim.
:03:34. > :03:37.Chris mentioned Joe Truman, it is a strong line-up but he will be hoping
:03:38. > :03:44.to get into the medal race. And Chris Latham is the representative
:03:45. > :03:56.for Great Britain in the men's scratch race, hoping to
:03:57. > :04:04.emulate emulate Elinor barquer from yesterday. We talked about your
:04:05. > :04:07.decision to retire and you will be watching the team pursuit. How do
:04:08. > :04:12.you think you'll miss your fellow riders? I will miss the people more
:04:13. > :04:15.than the raying. When you are racing, you have the nerves, the
:04:16. > :04:19.pressure expectation, are my legs feeling OK r they aching too much,
:04:20. > :04:23.or not enough? I'm enjoying watching it not having the worries but I do
:04:24. > :04:26.miss the team atmosphere. We all become very close, you know by
:04:27. > :04:29.looking at their team-mates how they're feeling that day, their body
:04:30. > :04:35.language and everything. I will miss that side of it but I am enjoying
:04:36. > :04:40.watching today and finger crossed a really good performance from the
:04:41. > :04:44.girls today. The exciting thing is now the real depth of talent in the
:04:45. > :04:50.women's team. They can afford to chop and change. And Elinor barquer
:04:51. > :04:53.yesterday who won the bronze silver in the scratch said she wasn't going
:04:54. > :05:01.to do the team pursuit but she will be in the line up. Let's hear for
:05:02. > :05:09.some of the new faces and Elinor herself. -- Elinor barquer. El D
:05:10. > :05:16.Barker. I was going to ask how you have
:05:17. > :05:20.changed, winning the gold medal? It hasn't changed that much. I have
:05:21. > :05:24.done more racing in the last six months than I had 2349 whole of the
:05:25. > :05:28.year-and-a-half before the Olympics. I wasn't expected to be selected
:05:29. > :05:32.last year but it was nice to be selected. The team are going really
:05:33. > :05:38.well at the moment. Hopefully we can do our best Coming up to the Worlds
:05:39. > :05:42.I was extremely nervous. I was going in the with the girls who were off
:05:43. > :05:46.the Olympics, but now I'm excited. Some of the girls who went off the
:05:47. > :05:51.Olympics, they have gone off the programme. Laura has gone off,
:05:52. > :05:55.Joanna has retired. Does it open up new opportunities, are you ready to
:05:56. > :06:00.step up? Definitely I want to be in the team pursuit squad in Tokyo. I
:06:01. > :06:07.have big boots to fill with Jo and Laura but definitely relish the
:06:08. > :06:11.challenge. A door opens. Over the past few years it has been the same
:06:12. > :06:14.girls working their way to the opportunities. You have to seize the
:06:15. > :06:18.opportunity when it is there and try to put yourself in for the next four
:06:19. > :06:26.years for the Olympics. Emily Kay was part of the line-up who
:06:27. > :06:31.qualified. She has been replaced by Elinor Barker for this afternoon how
:06:32. > :06:37.good did they qualify? That was the performance of the day yesterday.
:06:38. > :06:40.They qualified fifth people probably think they are Nott top two but it
:06:41. > :06:43.was a personal best for them over four seconds which is huge. The
:06:44. > :06:46.average age of the team is 19. So for those girls to make such a huge
:06:47. > :06:49.improvement at the World Championships on a big stage was
:06:50. > :06:56.incredible. I'm really excited for them today. The best they can get is
:06:57. > :06:59.bronze. They are now going to race against the eighth-placed team they
:07:00. > :07:02.need to win that and record one of the top two fastest times, except
:07:03. > :07:06.for the win e it is a little complicated but they can now
:07:07. > :07:09.progress to the bronze medal ride, depending how fast they ride in this
:07:10. > :07:13.round. It is all about setting as fast a time that they can do. You
:07:14. > :07:17.are impressed with the way they are working together at the moment. I
:07:18. > :07:22.am. They are all very young. El is coming in. She is 22, the eldest
:07:23. > :07:26.person in the team, which is strange at that age. But they are really
:07:27. > :07:30.good. Fun to be around. All pretty relaxed. They have watched us
:07:31. > :07:34.prepare for Rio and watched how that process developed over the four-year
:07:35. > :07:38.cycle. They are hungry to be part of the team for Tokyo W me now retired
:07:39. > :07:43.that's one space potentially free. Not saying I would've go the it but
:07:44. > :07:48.the team is opening up and they all want to be part of that. And it is
:07:49. > :07:51.nice for me to see as an older retired rider, see younger people
:07:52. > :07:55.wanting to be part of the team I was a part of. That is a guess a legacy
:07:56. > :07:58.from our success. That is one of the real attractions of a World
:07:59. > :08:02.Championships, after an Olympic Games, you get the new faces coming
:08:03. > :08:06.through you have not seen before, Joe Truman is a good example we will
:08:07. > :08:10.see later The average age of the whole team is 22. That has to be
:08:11. > :08:15.great sfort and the team in general. It is exciting. -- for the sport. It
:08:16. > :08:18.is exciting. New names coming through A chance to shine and
:08:19. > :08:20.establish yourself in the team. But for other countries, people who
:08:21. > :08:25.underperformed in Rio who are desperate to perform to make up for
:08:26. > :08:28.that disappointment. It is not as if the standard drops off, it is a nice
:08:29. > :08:32.Championships. We have a mix of endurance and spripting. We will see
:08:33. > :08:35.the women's sprinting. Katy Marchant, she didn't get through
:08:36. > :08:41.this morning to have a chance of a medal but you are improsed with the
:08:42. > :08:46.quality? She did 11.1 which isn't bad. 16th place. Nine riders went
:08:47. > :08:49.under 11 seconds. It is incredible. One of the highest standard fields
:08:50. > :08:53.we have seen in a world Championship. It is an example of
:08:54. > :08:56.how muchp the standard is going up and you have. Katie will be
:08:57. > :09:02.disappointed. She is an pig medallist but she will be back in
:09:03. > :09:06.the keirin. And when it -- she is an Olympic medallist.
:09:07. > :09:15.And for the home crowd, it is good to see a good home cyclist in there.
:09:16. > :09:19.It is massy. L -- it is massive. This will be a bid opportunity for
:09:20. > :09:25.the home rider. There is the scene. We are about to see Great Britain's
:09:26. > :09:31.women team pursuit and they need as Jo was saying, in the top two times
:09:32. > :09:37.of those not in the past two races. It is simple, Simon Brotherton will
:09:38. > :09:42.make more sense of it. Hopefully. Thank you, Clare.
:09:43. > :09:47.Welcome to the velodrome in Hong Kong, we are almost ready for the
:09:48. > :09:50.first round ride in the women's team pursuit. Great Britain on one side.
:09:51. > :09:56.Poland on the other. Just seconds to go. Great Britain will not have the
:09:57. > :09:58.chance to ride for gold and silver but they need to be quick enough to
:09:59. > :10:13.make it into the bronze medal ride. So away we g Ellie Dickinson, Manon
:10:14. > :10:17.Lloyd. Elinor Barker there, she was so impressive in the scratch race
:10:18. > :10:22.yesterday and nearly became the World Champion. Pipped to the line.
:10:23. > :10:29.Great Britain settling down into their rhythm now. Well 1.18 they
:10:30. > :10:34.posted in the qualifying. This is effectively another time trial
:10:35. > :10:40.round. The fastest two teams outside of the seeded last two heats have
:10:41. > :10:44.the chance to go for the bronze. Win or lose, it will be done purely on
:10:45. > :10:48.time that bronze medal ride-off. All it play for her. In terms of the
:10:49. > :10:52.gold and silver it will be the winners of Australia against Canada
:10:53. > :10:57.and USA against Italy. Those coming up in a few moments' time. But we
:10:58. > :11:04.are concentrating on Great Britain now. The on-bike cameras giving us a
:11:05. > :11:09.feel of what it is like to be in there. You can see the concentration
:11:10. > :11:15.etch on riders' faces. It is all about measuring effort. Just over a
:11:16. > :11:20.minute. Slightly slower than they posted in qualifying but not by
:11:21. > :11:24.much, two tenths of a second. Emily Nelson is riding on front at the
:11:25. > :11:27.moment. The 20-year-old from Litchfield who made her World
:11:28. > :11:31.Championship debut last year, finishing fifth in the points race.
:11:32. > :11:36.Our focus very much on the British team here. Seeding-wise, polled a
:11:37. > :11:39.should be well behind and sure enough the British team has already
:11:40. > :11:43.got them in their sights. So there is potential for a catch here and as
:11:44. > :11:47.it is about time, that could be very, very valuable. Interesting as
:11:48. > :11:50.well. It shows you how things are moving on when Elinor Barker is the
:11:51. > :11:54.oldest member of the team. She is the one with all the experience and
:11:55. > :11:57.she's only 22 herself. Of course she has won the world title before in
:11:58. > :12:02.this event and is an Olympic champion as well. They are four
:12:03. > :12:13.seconds ahead of the Polish team at the moment but it's almost
:12:14. > :12:22.irrelevant. It is all about time. The schedule is being called out to
:12:23. > :12:31.them by their coach, at the side of the track. He'll point one way or
:12:32. > :12:40.another to show them where they are on schedule. He's showing them high
:12:41. > :12:45.at the moment, which is a surprised. Well-drilled at the moment. Dick be
:12:46. > :12:48.son takes her turn. 18. Part of the Great Britain set up since 2013.
:12:49. > :12:52.Still slightly down on schedule. They are definitely going to get the
:12:53. > :12:59.catch here. A mixed blessing. They are in the slipstream, have been for
:13:00. > :13:08.some time, getting sucked along. They want to do it in the straight,
:13:09. > :13:13.to pro-Dawes the distance. Manon Lloyd there finishing her turn and
:13:14. > :13:17.settling in at the back, as Great Britain make the -- Dickinson.
:13:18. > :13:18.There was a problem in the men's competition yesterday between the
:13:19. > :13:22.Canadians and New Zealanders which ended up with all four Canadians on
:13:23. > :13:25.the floor We thought the catch might happen but it is quite early into
:13:26. > :13:28.this race. All four riders still present at the moment. A few
:13:29. > :13:34.slightly sketchy changes with riders having to push on.
:13:35. > :13:44.Britain looking smooth. They are in the region of 4.21. They'll need to
:13:45. > :13:50.be at least that here if they bant a shot at that bronze medal. New
:13:51. > :14:08.Zealand and France have already been in the track. Two laps to go now.
:14:09. > :14:17.Manon Lloyd drives on the front. I think it was Dickinson who came off
:14:18. > :14:20.a short turn. You have to park your egoes in this team event. Great
:14:21. > :14:25.Britain are going to finish with three in the end here. But it is all
:14:26. > :14:33.about the time as they come around the banking and up towards the line
:14:34. > :14:36.and it is a 4.21.681 for Great Britain. You have to give it to them
:14:37. > :14:38.for consistency. One-tenth off their qualifying time and they were
:14:39. > :14:47.exactly the same all the way through there. So a solid ride by them. So
:14:48. > :14:52.Great Britain's riders there, just winding down. I don't know what
:14:53. > :14:58.Joanna Russell Shand thinks of that. They looked like they were in
:14:59. > :15:03.control of their ride? It looked a solid ride. It is almost difficult
:15:04. > :15:06.if you get a catch, you get a great slipstream, it is awesome but when
:15:07. > :15:10.you go over them, suddenly you are hitting the wind again and they had
:15:11. > :15:14.to pass the Polish team which isn't ideal and they had the whole last
:15:15. > :15:17.kilometre with nobody to chase. I thought it was a solid rides.
:15:18. > :15:21.Consolidated what they did yesterday. We'll have to want sea if
:15:22. > :15:24.it is enough to get to the bronze medal final but good for them to
:15:25. > :15:27.back up their performance in a different situation. Yesterday they
:15:28. > :15:31.were against America in qualifying, who are far quicker so, there was no
:15:32. > :15:34.character chase. Today they had to make the pass around Poland which
:15:35. > :15:38.they did nicely. It is very difficult to do but to have all four
:15:39. > :15:39.riders, with a lap to go and to finish with three, a really good
:15:40. > :15:53.ride. Thanks, Jo. Yes, Great Britain, now
:15:54. > :16:00.we will wait and see what happens in this third heat of four between
:16:01. > :16:03.Australia, the 2015 World Champions, they made Great Britain in the
:16:04. > :16:19.final. And Canada on the other side of the track.
:16:20. > :16:27.The Brits will be up against T the Canadians went faster in the
:16:28. > :16:31.previous round and New Zealanders already pipped them. So a tough
:16:32. > :16:32.competition for the bronze. Hush here in the velodrome before they
:16:33. > :16:53.are under way. Canada has a late addition to their
:16:54. > :16:56.team. Both teams away. Australia one second between them and the team
:16:57. > :16:58.from the United States in the opening round of this competition.
:16:59. > :17:03.So certainly it's fierce. This is one of the few, if not the only
:17:04. > :17:07.event where women are now very much on par with men n both team sizes
:17:08. > :17:19.and distances. Which is about time, to be honest. Australians coming
:17:20. > :17:21.round to the finishing straight. Gary Sutton the coach standing in
:17:22. > :17:30.the centre of the track, keeping them in touch with the schedule that
:17:31. > :17:33.they are expected to be on here. The Canadians went out quicker in the
:17:34. > :17:39.early round. We should expect this to be close for a while. Sure enough
:17:40. > :17:43.they are again ahead in this opening kilometre. In controost Great
:17:44. > :17:50.Britain, bags of experience, on the whole it is an olteder squad of
:17:51. > :17:51.riders. Many of whom have Olympic experience with appearances in the
:17:52. > :18:01.podium in London and Rio. It should be a close match. Canada
:18:02. > :18:07.pushing on at the moment. Nearly a second ahead of the Australians.
:18:08. > :18:13.That can't be a comfortable place to be. Canada putting early pressure on
:18:14. > :18:17.Australian now. Still, a long, long way to go in this first-round match.
:18:18. > :18:22.The winner of this heat will race for gold later on. As they come
:18:23. > :18:26.through, with still ten laps to go and as you can see, still over
:18:27. > :18:33.three-quarters of a second, the advantage for the Canadian team,
:18:34. > :18:37.riding on the front at the moment for Canada, Kirsti Lay. Good changes
:18:38. > :18:42.too, plenty of height. It takes confidence to do that. They are
:18:43. > :18:46.holding their own noement. In fact they are extending their advantage.
:18:47. > :18:53.-- their own at the moment. They'll have to react soon. Interesting,
:18:54. > :18:58.Rebecca Wiasak, has been on the first lap for the last last lap or
:18:59. > :19:02.so. She has won the World Championships. That was a poor
:19:03. > :19:06.change by the Australians. I was just about to remark, I have seen a
:19:07. > :19:10.few fractures with the Canadian team but we're seeing them amongst the
:19:11. > :19:15.Australians as W so 0.9 of a second, they are edging their way back. It
:19:16. > :19:18.is going to come down to who's got the best management of the resources
:19:19. > :19:28.they have available on each team. It is going to have to be something of
:19:29. > :19:36.a sprint at the end for Australia. Duehring riding on the front.
:19:37. > :19:43.A big turn coming from Amy Cure, she has done a lot of laps on the front
:19:44. > :19:46.Yes, it takes a lot of courage. The can #5idians now down to three in
:19:47. > :19:51.the closing stavenlingts the Australians clawing their way back.
:19:52. > :19:57.Tighter now. Manly on front for Australia. For Canada, leading the
:19:58. > :20:02.way is Laura Browne. They have one kilometre to go. Very, very close.
:20:03. > :20:06.Australia now are starting to turn the screw here. I think they have
:20:07. > :20:12.got the momentum now. 01 of a second. You can see there is real
:20:13. > :20:16.strength in the Canadian three. They might be racing a rider, but that
:20:17. > :20:20.can help if you have got rid of somebody who is slowing down. Yes,
:20:21. > :20:24.fighting really hard Canada. They certainly haven't fallen apart Oh,
:20:25. > :20:30.they are now, but there is problems. There is a gap opening now and tough
:20:31. > :20:33.for Canada with two laps to G Now Australia are swinging the pendulum
:20:34. > :20:37.their way here in what is effectively a semifinal. It looks
:20:38. > :20:44.like a very, very painful ride for the Canadian rider at the back. ,
:20:45. > :20:47.that I think is Kirsti Lay It is all over now. You cannot afford for that
:20:48. > :20:51.to happen. Remember the time is taken on the front wheel of the
:20:52. > :20:55.third rider. It is irrelevant how far up the road your team-mates are.
:20:56. > :21:00.Here come Australia, they didn't panic when they were put under
:21:01. > :21:05.pressure. They stuck together, they stayed strong and brought it home in
:21:06. > :21:11.the end. Australia, timing their effort to perfection and through to
:21:12. > :21:17.the final. 4.22 for Canada. So the British team are going to be happy
:21:18. > :21:21.about that one. So Australia, then will race for gold. Remember they
:21:22. > :21:27.were the World Champions two years ago. It was Canada who made the
:21:28. > :21:32.stronger start of the two teams out on the track but Australia just hung
:21:33. > :21:40.on in #24r, kept it to roughly within a second and started to reel
:21:41. > :21:46.it in in the closing laps. -- hung on in there. Australia, sticking
:21:47. > :21:51.with four for a long, long time during that race. It was a very big
:21:52. > :21:57.effort from Amy Cure, when they started to turn it back their way.
:21:58. > :22:00.It was a very strategic race. They didn't panic early on when they were
:22:01. > :22:04.under pressure. Kept their formation and in the end, the Canadians, who
:22:05. > :22:08.were riding above their game, just made pretty much that one mistake.
:22:09. > :22:12.Even if they were down to three, if they'd kepted their formation they
:22:13. > :22:16.might have got away with that one. That's what it is about.
:22:17. > :22:21.Communication is a big part of the team pursuit event. A good ride from
:22:22. > :22:22.Australia, now the final heat in this first round. United States
:22:23. > :22:33.against Italy. No Sarah Hammer here. She has other
:22:34. > :22:36.events to look forward to. But Hammer was key for them in the
:22:37. > :22:49.qualifying round. Of the ones not heading for the
:22:50. > :22:54.final, the British team at the moment have the second fastest time,
:22:55. > :22:59.so they are still in with a shout of that bronze medal ride-off but it'll
:23:00. > :23:03.all depend on what the loser of this heat manages to post. Great to see
:23:04. > :23:13.it this close, the competition, though T the United States are the
:23:14. > :23:17.defending World Champions, they won that title 30 months ago. The
:23:18. > :23:33.Olympic silver medallists, beaten in Rio last summer.
:23:34. > :23:41.Away they G Will the United States -- away they go. Will the United
:23:42. > :23:44.States earn the chance to try to defend their title against
:23:45. > :23:48.Australia? Getting into formation. Different strategies getting off the
:23:49. > :23:52.blocks. Third and fourth riders often try to keep the height as long
:23:53. > :23:56.as possible so they can drop down and use that slanting on the wheels.
:23:57. > :23:59.A quarter of a lap and they are settled in. The pace still rising
:24:00. > :24:03.all the time. That's the job of riders one and two. Rider two is the
:24:04. > :24:07.one that really gets them up to speed. So it is tough being number
:24:08. > :24:11.one, having to get off the mark and get into slipstream while everything
:24:12. > :24:18.still accelerating. But there was a real pace there.
:24:19. > :24:27.Chloe Dygert, she was sixth in the Tour of California. She was the
:24:28. > :24:33.second rider to hit. Front and for Italy the current world junior road
:24:34. > :24:37.race champion is there. They have got off the mark quickly. The United
:24:38. > :24:41.States in qualifying posted the fastest first kilometre by some
:24:42. > :24:44.margin. The Italian strategy to to get them under pressure as quickly
:24:45. > :24:50.as possible. They have come on in the last couple of years, the eye
:24:51. > :24:53.tappia, particularly the men's -- Italians, particularly the men's
:24:54. > :25:00.team who are competitive in the team pursuit.
:25:01. > :25:05.! You have to wonder if the Americans are missing the presence
:25:06. > :25:15.of Sarah hammer. They are 0.6 of a second down. They
:25:16. > :25:20.are making their way back. They are on track. They have higher pace.
:25:21. > :25:25.Good changes, too. Plenty of height there. Whenever she does ride, which
:25:26. > :25:29.is most often. It looks like she is the leader on the track. Most
:25:30. > :25:34.definitely you can see that by the way she races. Nine laps to go and
:25:35. > :25:41.under half a second between these two line-ups here. Over the years
:25:42. > :25:45.the nature of this event has changed dramatically. It is a series of
:25:46. > :25:48.sprints than an endurance event. It is a different type of athlete who
:25:49. > :25:52.competes in it. Often it is a case of the team that doesn't make a
:25:53. > :25:54.mistake. They are under so much pressure. Americans already down to
:25:55. > :26:00.three, which is surprising with seven laps to G It is a long, long
:26:01. > :26:04.way to go with your core group of three. The time taken on the third
:26:05. > :26:09.rider to cross the line. So they have to stay together now come what
:26:10. > :26:15.may We will see what happens, but it is a surprise, the team from the
:26:16. > :26:17.United States were by far the favourite but they've yet to get
:26:18. > :26:22.their nose in front. They are getting close. Less than a tenth of
:26:23. > :26:25.a second behind but the gaps appearing and they are looking
:26:26. > :26:29.ragged but the pace is there as they move into the lead. Can they hold it
:26:30. > :26:33.together? They have no more cards to play. All three of them have got to
:26:34. > :26:45.finish. But they have bags of talent still out there in the track in
:26:46. > :26:51.Dygert and Valente. Geust dropped out. Italy still have
:26:52. > :26:57.the four but do they have to make the sacrifice? They are looking
:26:58. > :27:02.laboured now. They rode quickly at the start. They could put Britain
:27:03. > :27:05.under pressure. Sure enough they are almost neck-and-neck with the
:27:06. > :27:11.British team's time. It is going to be close with three laps to G coming
:27:12. > :27:17.towards the front. Chloe Dygert, one of those who won a silver medal in
:27:18. > :27:20.Rio and part of the World Championship-winning team in London
:27:21. > :27:25.a year ago when they were flying, the United States, into the final
:27:26. > :27:28.two laps now, with Dygert doing a big turn down the front. The
:27:29. > :27:32.Americans will take this, if they don't make a mistake but the
:27:33. > :27:37.Italians are coming back quite quickly as W It is going to be a
:27:38. > :27:40.chase on the final lap. Oh, half a second in t between the pair of
:27:41. > :27:44.them. It does mean that the United States should be able to hold it
:27:45. > :27:48.through to the finishing line and make it into the final here. But
:27:49. > :27:55.goodness me, Italy have pushed them hard, all the way to the line. USA
:27:56. > :28:01.get it, 4.18.716. We now have to wait and look at the time that comes
:28:02. > :28:05.up for Italy Oh, they've gone quick. They have gone quick, we will wait
:28:06. > :28:06.for confirmation but it was a superb ride by the Italians. Two seconds
:28:07. > :28:24.fastinger than the British team. So the USA there, leaving the
:28:25. > :28:31.starter's gate and bringing it home. And earning the chance then to
:28:32. > :28:36.defend their world title. They'll just wait for confirmation of the
:28:37. > :28:39.times to see whether Great Britain do get the opportunity to race for
:28:40. > :28:43.the bronze medal? I don't think they do. I think Italy and New Zealand
:28:44. > :28:49.have gone faster than them. We're still waiting for confirmation. But
:28:50. > :28:52.Manon Lloyd and Emily Nelson, among those in the centre, watching on and
:28:53. > :28:59.hoping, but I don't think Great Britain will be riding again for a
:29:00. > :29:05.bronze medal later on. With the United States pushed all the way in
:29:06. > :29:08.that one, weren't they? Slightly slower than their round yesterday.
:29:09. > :29:16.The Italians really raised their game there. A solid, solid ride by
:29:17. > :29:20.them. There is the confirmation it is indeed Italy against New Zealand
:29:21. > :29:24.for the bronze medal and the world title decided between the defending
:29:25. > :29:31.champions, the United States and the 2015 World Champions, Australia.
:29:32. > :29:39.Joe Russell Shand alongside me having watched the races seeing the
:29:40. > :29:43.girls warm down. They realising they have not done enough. What do you
:29:44. > :29:47.think, that young group of team pursuiters should take out of this
:29:48. > :29:51.experience? I think they should take a huge amount of confidence from a
:29:52. > :29:55.if you are-second personal best. Their all-best time was 4.25 and
:29:56. > :30:00.they did 4.21 yesterday and again today so backed up. A big thing
:30:01. > :30:04.about competing is a back up your rides to do it twice, huge
:30:05. > :30:07.positives. I don't think coming into this competition, anybody would've
:30:08. > :30:10.expected them to medal. If you look at the other teams, America have
:30:11. > :30:14.three out of their four riders from the Olympics. Other nations again
:30:15. > :30:20.have a lot of riders from their Olympic teams. Until El in that
:30:21. > :30:24.round, none of our Olympic riders it was all brand new. They should be
:30:25. > :30:29.delighted with their time and excited for how much more they can
:30:30. > :30:33.develop. Average age of 1, refugee future ahead. Let's look at how they
:30:34. > :30:39.caught Poland and how tight they were.
:30:40. > :30:48.This isn't easy at all. Ideally, you want to go past on a straight. Here,
:30:49. > :30:55.they come around the bank, all that extra distance, a bit of work to get
:30:56. > :31:03.back into the slipstream. You have got to go down smoothly. Your
:31:04. > :31:08.team-mates will turn left and you are stuck on the side of the other
:31:09. > :31:13.team. It is easier in the front two on a pass, rather than at the back.
:31:14. > :31:17.It is a challenging place to be, physically. You have to do further
:31:18. > :31:22.distance, potentially more power output whilst your team-mates
:31:23. > :31:27.turned, and keep it together. But they did it very well, so I am
:31:28. > :31:32.pleased with that. We switch from endurance racing to sprint racing,
:31:33. > :31:35.we have the women's sprint quarterfinals, no Katy Marchant, who
:31:36. > :31:40.won bronze at the Olympics. She failed to get through. Becky James
:31:41. > :31:46.is taking a break. The defending champion Kristina Vogel, you will
:31:47. > :31:54.see her later, but this is the first of the heats. Here's Simon.
:31:55. > :32:03.COMMENTATOR: Thanks, Claire. We are watching Stephanie Morton from
:32:04. > :32:05.Australia. This is the quarterfinals, this match is good
:32:06. > :32:16.enough to have later in the competition. It should be really
:32:17. > :32:20.close. Here they come to the line. Morton was too strong. She led from
:32:21. > :32:28.the front and made sure she stayed there. Or an
:32:29. > :32:36.Morton is in good form. She won Silver last March, but got the
:32:37. > :32:43.better of the Russian in the first race of three. Quite a piece of
:32:44. > :32:52.inside all acceleration. She made it -- in saddle acceleration. Managing
:32:53. > :32:58.to hold her on the shoulder. Real strength in depth in the Australian
:32:59. > :33:02.team across all disciplines. Really, here, they want to bag as many
:33:03. > :33:06.titles as possible. It is not for experience, that's for sure.
:33:07. > :33:18.Stephanie Morton, not one ride away from the semifinal now. The second
:33:19. > :33:23.semifinal comes up. Morton, as she steps off the track, we will see the
:33:24. > :33:35.rider that was her team-mate last might, Kaarle McCulloch against Wai
:33:36. > :33:41.Sze Lee. Champion in 2013. A big favourite here. She won bronze medal
:33:42. > :33:49.at the keirin in London at the big games. It was their first ever
:33:50. > :33:55.Olympic medal in cycling. Certainly on form, qualifying second fastest
:33:56. > :34:03.with 10.76 in this competition. Certainly, a rider to be respected.
:34:04. > :34:06.As long as you are within two tenths of each other in the qualifying
:34:07. > :34:10.round, it almost doesn't mean anything. It is a different thing,
:34:11. > :34:19.running a time trial versus match sprinting. McCulloch is a master of
:34:20. > :34:25.the art of the sprint. Just in case you are wondering, no Becky James
:34:26. > :34:28.here for Great Britain. Winning two silver medals in Rio. Katy Marchant
:34:29. > :34:34.the only female British sprinter here. It did not go well for her
:34:35. > :34:39.today, 16th fastest in the flying 200, and went straight out in the
:34:40. > :34:46.finals. She didn't have any zip in her legs today. Coming around to
:34:47. > :34:50.take the bell this time, keen to take control of the race,
:34:51. > :34:54.accelerating steadily, bringing it down to the bottom, acceleration
:34:55. > :34:57.around the outside. Another tremendous matchup between these
:34:58. > :35:03.two, Kaarle McCulloch three-time world champion in the sprint. She
:35:04. > :35:08.has her hands full. Lee goes around the outside. McCulloch went be able
:35:09. > :35:12.to come back on the first ride, Wai Sze Lee wins and the crowd get
:35:13. > :35:23.animated for the first time on day two. Good for the sport, good for
:35:24. > :35:27.the crowd. Wai Sze Lee on form, fantastic acceleration. Almost got
:35:28. > :35:33.their head too early, but with half a lap to go, cracking acceleration
:35:34. > :35:41.put her over the top. When you are going in the final banking, you are
:35:42. > :35:48.holding your own. You are going to- three kilometres an hour faster. She
:35:49. > :35:53.was saving her legs for the second ride of three, rather than pushing
:35:54. > :35:57.really, really hard when she knew she was going to lose the first
:35:58. > :36:03.spring. She will have to go back to the drawing board and will need to
:36:04. > :36:05.win the second race, or it will be Wai Sze Lee from Hong Kong who goes
:36:06. > :36:23.through to the semifinals. So far, so good, then, for the rider
:36:24. > :36:28.from Hong Kong. On her local track. We are about to see the Olympic
:36:29. > :36:30.champion here, from Germany, Kristina Vogel, seven times world
:36:31. > :36:37.champion on the track, including twice in this event. She's up
:36:38. > :36:45.against the European keirin champion. Also the former European
:36:46. > :36:49.sprint champion from two years ago. Having already seen Kristina Vogel
:36:50. > :36:54.perform at this World Championships, I would say my money is on her at
:36:55. > :36:59.the moment. In the team sprint, her and Miriam Welte, a long established
:37:00. > :37:05.partnership, blistering pace in the qualifiers. They couldn't carry that
:37:06. > :37:09.speed on and ended up with a bronze medal as they did at that event in
:37:10. > :37:14.the Olympics last year, and in the World Championships as well. The
:37:15. > :37:19.Ukrainian is the underdog in this pairing, you would have to say, on
:37:20. > :37:24.form. Knowing that, she probably understands it has got to be a
:37:25. > :37:32.tactical race. Down at the bottom at the moment, leaving no room. Vogel
:37:33. > :37:35.all have to go the long way round. That is why she is gaining height
:37:36. > :37:45.now. She is being allowed to have it. Pushing to go early. The sprint
:37:46. > :37:52.is on now. Vogel opens it up, and immediately draws level and swings
:37:53. > :37:59.past. Completely taking control of this first ride in the quarterfinal.
:38:00. > :38:05.The Olympics bring champion was too good there. She takes the first
:38:06. > :38:09.ride. And is looking good. There were two choices and the Ukrainian
:38:10. > :38:13.didn't take either of them. She had to accelerate or equally take the
:38:14. > :38:18.same amount of height on the track. Indecisive, went halfway up the
:38:19. > :38:22.track, giving away a big acceleration advantage and didn't
:38:23. > :38:28.accelerate hard enough. She was up against it anyway, to be fair.
:38:29. > :38:31.Unable to control that one, I think, from start to finish. A big ask to
:38:32. > :38:40.get the better of Kristina Vogel, whoever you are, in the match
:38:41. > :38:45.sprint. So, the winners so far of these first quarterfinal match ups,
:38:46. > :38:52.Stephanie Morton, Wai Sze Lee and Kristina Vogel. All of those riders
:38:53. > :38:56.one win away from the semifinals. Here comes the final quarterfinal
:38:57. > :39:03.heat, matchup one. This is an interesting one, Simona Krupeckaite
:39:04. > :39:07.from Lithuania, she has been around for a long time, twice a World
:39:08. > :39:11.Champion a view years ago. She is exactly twice the age of her
:39:12. > :39:20.opponent here, 17-year-old, but ill Gros from France. Gros played
:39:21. > :39:26.basketball for years at school. Around 2014, she started riding a
:39:27. > :39:34.bike. They spotted her talent right away -- Matilda Gros. A couple of
:39:35. > :39:38.years ago, she won two European titles, breaking records in the
:39:39. > :39:41.process. Last year, as a 16-year-old, bypassed the junior
:39:42. > :39:45.jumping ship, went into the senior championship and won two titles in
:39:46. > :39:51.the keirin and the 500 metre time trial. We have youth against
:39:52. > :40:00.experience here. Which one will come out on top? Quite a story and quite
:40:01. > :40:05.a meteoric rise as well for Gros. But she's still on a steep learning
:40:06. > :40:11.curve, and is up against a rider who knows every tactic in the book, and
:40:12. > :40:18.has been around the block, as it were, it so many times in track
:40:19. > :40:23.spending. She will have some of the best teachers, tactically. She has
:40:24. > :40:28.not been forced into panicking yet. Not hanging around, keeping tabs on
:40:29. > :40:33.her opponent. The sprint will be on now as Qwest kite goes around the
:40:34. > :40:37.outside. BB action comes from Gros from France, neck and neck into the
:40:38. > :40:44.finishing straight. This is going to be tight. In the end... O! Neck and
:40:45. > :40:49.neck on the line. Just managing to get her front tyre in front of the
:40:50. > :40:56.young Frenchwoman. But what a battle it was. I think she did. She seems
:40:57. > :40:59.to be on real form at the moment. She has already been the best in the
:41:00. > :41:06.world at this event, having the title. Now you can see why. A tire's
:41:07. > :41:11.width or less. She had the acceleration there. I was just
:41:12. > :41:16.watching young Gros. She was pushing it on the edge of the sprinters's
:41:17. > :41:20.line, dipping in and out. You can see, there, depending on how strict
:41:21. > :41:25.the judges are, they may penalised her for that. She didn't do anything
:41:26. > :41:28.too untoward. I wonder if she had taken it, whether she would be
:41:29. > :41:35.penalised coming out of the sprinters block. But in the end,
:41:36. > :41:38.it's not important. At your first senior World Championship, to push
:41:39. > :41:43.somebody of that experience so hard in a quarterfinal was a very good
:41:44. > :41:49.effort indeed. And it's not over yet. They will be back a bit later
:41:50. > :41:53.for matchup number two in this best of 3/4-final. My goodness me, it was
:41:54. > :41:57.genuinely the width of a tire between them.
:41:58. > :42:09.CLARE BALDING: Chris Hoy said she had won it by a mile. Really
:42:10. > :42:14.exciting. It was. The experience and knowledge against the youthful
:42:15. > :42:21.vigour of Gros. She did come outside the sprinter's link. If the result
:42:22. > :42:26.was different, as Chris mentioned. Gros on the inside shouldn't come
:42:27. > :42:30.out of the sprinting line was much no, she came out by a couple of
:42:31. > :42:35.inches, but enough that had she won the race, the Lithuanian might have
:42:36. > :42:41.protested against it, but it didn't matter in the end, as you see, by a
:42:42. > :42:46.mile. They are not hanging about in Hong Kong. Let's talk about the
:42:47. > :42:50.keirin. Joe Truman, he will have to finish in the top three in his race
:42:51. > :42:57.to get through to the medal races. Let's hear from him about how he got
:42:58. > :43:02.into cycling. It's a strange one, really. When I
:43:03. > :43:07.was young, my grandad did some work with the RNLI. I looked around the
:43:08. > :43:12.area, and there was a small velodrome. I was quite young. It was
:43:13. > :43:16.at the back of my head that I wanted to have a go. I got to the age of
:43:17. > :43:19.14, I was doing cycling and fitness for football, and I went down, tried
:43:20. > :43:27.it out, loved it and took it from there. Joe Truman is going to be in
:43:28. > :43:32.the second of the heats we see here. Chris alongside me, keirin expert,
:43:33. > :43:37.explain to anybody watching what you have got to do to make sure you are
:43:38. > :43:42.in the top three. It sounds obvious, but be near the front. There is a
:43:43. > :43:45.build up behind the pace bike, but really, it is about being near the
:43:46. > :43:50.front and not getting caught at the back. You don't need to win, top
:43:51. > :43:55.three is all that is necessary. By being too cagey, you can find
:43:56. > :43:59.yourself at the back. It takes commitment to get to the front, but
:44:00. > :44:05.nerve and steel to battle and maintain the position. There was a
:44:06. > :44:14.lever was up against some tough names. -- Lewis Oliva will.
:44:15. > :44:22.Very tough for him and he is not a full-time cyclist. He is studying
:44:23. > :44:26.for his medic degree, so he had an impressive ride but not quick
:44:27. > :44:27.enough. Remember, some of these guys from the Olympic final but Jason
:44:28. > :44:42.Kenny won. COMMENTATOR: Thanks, Claire. We like
:44:43. > :44:50.the keirin, don't we. Wang already has a warning. Flamboyant, always
:44:51. > :44:57.entertaining. This will be quite an exciting match, I would say. There's
:44:58. > :45:00.the defending world champion, he was nearly thrown out of the Olympic
:45:01. > :45:16.final A. The second time, he looked like he
:45:17. > :45:19.was in trouble. But luckily, everybody was allowed to continue
:45:20. > :45:26.and we had the public Olympic final with everybody in the race. A slight
:45:27. > :45:30.delay here as they roll around. The little motorbike on the far side of
:45:31. > :45:36.the track. It looks ready to go. It is hard to tell these days because
:45:37. > :45:40.there is no motor sound. There is no ticking over because it is an
:45:41. > :45:43.electric bike. But it is a sign of the future, things change. When it
:45:44. > :45:49.gets underway, it will lead them for the first half of the race, three
:45:50. > :45:52.laps, then we'll pull off onto the finishing straight itself, the
:45:53. > :46:01.pursuit of Mark, with three laps to go, when it would have travelled
:46:02. > :46:10.slowly from 30 to 50 kph. Just to clarify, no rider can pass a bike.
:46:11. > :46:16.The front wheel and a front wheel of the bike before the end of the third
:46:17. > :46:20.lap. If they do, no restart, no other penalties other than
:46:21. > :46:24.disqualification. They have to look at the rules and tighten things up
:46:25. > :46:29.after what happened in Rio, because it was highly unusual. We had never
:46:30. > :46:34.seen anything like it before. To restart the second heat, it was
:46:35. > :46:41.incredible. Jason Kenny, they didn't have a camera on the line to
:46:42. > :46:44.actually see and make sure to properly validate the infraction of
:46:45. > :46:48.the rules. Lucky for us, that was the case. Now it has led to a
:46:49. > :47:09.cleaning up of the rules. Awang won the bronze medal in Rio in
:47:10. > :47:12.this event. Sam Webster from New Zealand, three times a world
:47:13. > :47:20.champion in the teams went, including yesterday. And the
:47:21. > :47:29.European silver medallist in the keirin. That's a camera on the top
:47:30. > :47:33.of the driver's cat. Not a flattering look. It is not. They
:47:34. > :47:39.drop into position for the order they drew at the start before coming
:47:40. > :47:43.to the track. They have two hold that position for one lap and then
:47:44. > :47:49.they can swap around. They can then persuade their opponents to give up
:47:50. > :47:56.their place in the line. Now we are looking at the rider from the
:47:57. > :48:00.Ukraine, Eilers at the back. Awang is one of the characters of track
:48:01. > :48:06.cycling, rolling around at the front. A bit of a gap left by the
:48:07. > :48:16.Australian. A very curious bike if you look at the bike of Eilers. The
:48:17. > :48:19.handlebars just get inside the interpretation of dropped
:48:20. > :48:23.handlebars. Compared to the other riders, it really is different. That
:48:24. > :48:31.is just for strength and a bit of aerodynamics. As he tries to make
:48:32. > :48:38.his way up the line. The on-board shots as Babek goes by. Sam Webster,
:48:39. > :48:46.and the bikers appears, the race is on. Webster from New Zealand leads
:48:47. > :48:49.the way. Eilers, the defending world champion in second place. Awang in
:48:50. > :48:54.fourth. The rider from the Ukraine at the back. Babek tries to go
:48:55. > :49:00.around and is looking strong, about to take the lead. Eilers has work to
:49:01. > :49:06.do as Awang is putting him under pressure. They go round to take the
:49:07. > :49:10.bell. Webster is out of it at the moment, so is the rider from the
:49:11. > :49:17.Ukraine at the back of the field. Over the shoulder of Babek.
:49:18. > :49:27.Territory Matt was pushed to the line by Awang of Malaysia. I will
:49:28. > :49:31.check to see if Eilers was taking Awang up the track when he came
:49:32. > :49:37.around the outside. There was no other reason for him to do that. It
:49:38. > :49:42.depends on how severe they are, but he did impede his cause in the
:49:43. > :49:45.middle of that race. As you say, Awang was putting him under
:49:46. > :49:50.pressure, so he took him quite a long way up the track to put him
:49:51. > :49:54.back in his place. He managed to qualify in second place. At the
:49:55. > :49:57.moment, he has been given that. Babek is third. This is on-board the
:49:58. > :50:10.Australian. Babek getting the nod over Awang for
:50:11. > :50:18.third place. Quite clearly, acting, by half a wheel. On the sale of
:50:19. > :50:28.tonight's close finishes. It was a mile, compared to some. Just shaking
:50:29. > :50:34.his legs as he winds down. He will prepare for the final. Here it is
:50:35. > :50:38.once again. Babek led out the sprint. He is out there too long. It
:50:39. > :50:47.was a real surge to get into pole position. He found himself there a
:50:48. > :50:50.little bit too early, didn't he. The Ukrainian at the back didn't have
:50:51. > :50:57.the speed to get involved in the rate at any point. Webster, too,
:50:58. > :51:00.just a little bit short, couldn't test everybody at the end of that
:51:01. > :51:07.sprint. There we are. No issues at the moment.
:51:08. > :51:14.The riders, as you can see, on the left hand side of your screen,
:51:15. > :51:20.already preparing for heat number two. They call it the second round,
:51:21. > :51:30.it is the semifinal. It is like American and British numbering of
:51:31. > :51:35.lifts. I quite like the numerical sequencing, but not here. Joe Truman
:51:36. > :51:41.was impressive earlier on finishing second in his heat. Predictably,
:51:42. > :51:52.giving it is a World Championship semifinal, he has his hands full.
:51:53. > :51:59.Keleman from the Czech Republic. Here's the man with all the
:52:00. > :52:08.experience Pervis, twice a world champion in 2014 and 2015, the
:52:09. > :52:13.keirin champion. Dawkins won in the team's red yesterday. A former
:52:14. > :52:20.silver medallist in this event from the World Championship.
:52:21. > :52:26.A great opportunity for Truman as the bike comes round. All the riders
:52:27. > :52:31.filter into position for the first lap. Pervis masses experience and
:52:32. > :52:47.success in cycling. The teams went, his third
:52:48. > :52:48.lap in that got the French into a medal ride. The French didn't ride
:52:49. > :52:58.in the final of other events. There is Francois Fillon Pervis of
:52:59. > :53:19.France. Keleman of the Czech Republic in
:53:20. > :53:22.blue, fourth in line. The rider with a splash of yellow from Colombia.
:53:23. > :53:29.Joe Truman at the back, the 20-year-old for Great Britain. This
:53:30. > :53:35.is it, they are coming around now. They race proper to start. All
:53:36. > :53:39.holding their line. The bike 's wings. Truman has a long way to come
:53:40. > :53:43.round there. You have to commit yourself. He waits for the straight
:53:44. > :53:48.and what a piece of exhilaration. He must have committed, he has decided
:53:49. > :53:52.to get involved in this one. Truman will take it on from the front of
:53:53. > :53:59.the race. Pervis in second place at the moment. Pervis boxed in a bit
:54:00. > :54:06.now. Coming around is Keleman. He tries to move up into third. At the
:54:07. > :54:15.moment, Truman has been overtaken by everybody in the field. Truman has
:54:16. > :54:19.run out of legs on the last lap. The first three over the line. Truman of
:54:20. > :54:23.great Britain did everything he could, but he went very, very early,
:54:24. > :54:29.which meant he didn't have a lot left when we got into the last lap.
:54:30. > :54:34.To be fair, he had a good crack at it, but he was outclassed in that
:54:35. > :54:38.one. Pervis was interesting, he might have finished second in the
:54:39. > :54:42.heat. We will await confirmation. He was second, looking around before
:54:43. > :54:48.going for the line, to see how much more he needed to do. We'll
:54:49. > :54:51.experience there. Trying to fight his way out. Joe Truman quickly
:54:52. > :55:05.realised it wasn't going to be his day. Keleman trying to unsettle
:55:06. > :55:09.Pervis, but he picks the wrong person, coming around the outside. I
:55:10. > :55:17.think the Frenchman was fully in control for that one.
:55:18. > :55:23.Keleman in fourth place. Edward Dawkins from New Zealand in fifth.
:55:24. > :55:26.Truman of Great Britain bringing up the rear in that semifinal of the
:55:27. > :55:34.men's keirin. Here is confirmation of the results will stop the victory
:55:35. > :55:48.going to Puerta. CLARE BALDING: Did you feel Joe
:55:49. > :55:53.Truman did the right tactics there? It was a brave ride. He took the
:55:54. > :55:59.race on, going early was his best chance to stay out of trouble.
:56:00. > :56:03.Anything can happen in the pack. He didn't quite have the legs but it
:56:04. > :56:08.showed bravery. It was a big effort to get over the top. Pervis hung him
:56:09. > :56:12.out to dry a bit. But he got back onto the black line, which is
:56:13. > :56:17.crucial. You have a world record-holder behind you, Puerta is
:56:18. > :56:23.flying right now, and he didn't have the legs to hang on. Pervis did well
:56:24. > :56:28.to get himself out of the box. He might get into trouble for using his
:56:29. > :56:34.head and his elbow a bit. But Puerta and Pervis will be danger men in the
:56:35. > :56:37.final. We are going to be moving onto the men's team pursuit and
:56:38. > :56:45.Great Britain line up in the bronze medal match against Italy. The
:56:46. > :56:51.line-up has been changed. Andy Tennant who raced yesterday is out,
:56:52. > :56:54.he has done two really good rounds. He has the individual pursuit
:56:55. > :56:59.tomorrow. He has done a lot of work to get the team here. It will be a
:57:00. > :57:03.tough battle with Italy. They were very close yesterday in the
:57:04. > :57:08.semifinals. I am looking forward to this race. Let's hear a bit more
:57:09. > :57:12.from the guys involved in the team pursuit.
:57:13. > :57:18.How did you get into cycling? My dad was a cyclist. I was ten years old
:57:19. > :57:24.and I went to my cycling club in Dundee. I had a heart operation as a
:57:25. > :57:29.kid and I needed to do more exercise. We used to go out, myself,
:57:30. > :57:36.my brother and my dad and my mum, mountain bike rides. My mum and dad
:57:37. > :57:41.raced and encouraged me to try cycling. I wasn't very good. I
:57:42. > :57:46.didn't get picked up until I was 19. He wouldn't expect me to go on and
:57:47. > :57:51.win any riddles, let alone world medals. Going out with my dad at the
:57:52. > :57:56.weekend, national series and here I am today. Starting to hurt now but
:57:57. > :58:00.it is all to play for Great Britain. I really enjoyed team pursuit and
:58:01. > :58:05.training with the lads. The feeling you get bombing around, your legs
:58:06. > :58:09.feel amazing and you are flying around, everything is going well. It
:58:10. > :58:15.is phenomenal. The team pursuit squad, this is the big discipline
:58:16. > :58:19.for British cycling, what is your experience as a sprinter? For me,
:58:20. > :58:23.proportionately, it is not as hard at the start as at the finish. I can
:58:24. > :58:29.do quite a good job at the start and get the race up to speed. You have
:58:30. > :58:34.to step up now. It is not a World Cup or a world under 23 Xiaobin
:58:35. > :58:37.chip. Going into the World Championship, everybody has got
:58:38. > :58:41.motivation, good morale and we support each other, everyone looks
:58:42. > :58:46.forward to racing and doing their best.
:58:47. > :58:51.CLARE BALDING: First, Italy against Great Britain and your commentator
:58:52. > :58:55.Chris Boardman alongside Simon Brotherton.
:58:56. > :59:04.COMMENTATOR: Great Britain about ride for bronze in the men's team
:59:05. > :59:11.pursuit, Great Britain against Italy. Interesting move to bring
:59:12. > :59:17.Stephen Burt Bracken. -- back in. Massive experience as a first man.
:59:18. > :59:29.So much experience from Stephen Burt there. Leading off on this first
:59:30. > :59:33.lap. Steven Burke twice a champion. Mark Stewart, Qian Emadi add up
:59:34. > :59:46.against Italy. The British men's coach at the side
:59:47. > :59:51.of the track, letting them know where they are, on schedule at this
:59:52. > :59:54.early stage. They have got themselves in front by boat .5
:59:55. > :00:00.seconds, which is good. They should be, again, under dogs on paper, but
:00:01. > :00:06.they have the pedigree. A bit of a surprise that Andy Tennant was taken
:00:07. > :00:10.out, too. Clearly, happy with this line up. Britain starting very
:00:11. > :00:14.confidently with roughly three quarters of a second advantage over
:00:15. > :00:15.the Italians in the early stages of this one. Still inside the first
:00:16. > :00:28.kilometre of the race. Ollie Wood riding on the front. Part
:00:29. > :00:31.of the team pursuit team in Glasgow that we saw in November They are
:00:32. > :00:35.going faster than their qualifying ride by some margin. 1.38 they did
:00:36. > :00:40.yesterday. The Italians almost bang on what they are capable of. So have
:00:41. > :00:45.the British team got more to give or gone out too fast? They've started
:00:46. > :00:49.well enough. Stewart the Scotsman riding on the front as the camera
:00:50. > :00:55.sticks with the Italians but Great Britain at the moment, seven tenth
:00:56. > :00:59.of a second ahead It is an awful lot at an event like this at the speed
:01:00. > :01:02.they're travelling. You won't able to see fatigue at the minute. They
:01:03. > :01:06.are riding in close formation, they are being told they are just up on
:01:07. > :01:10.schedule or bang on. So this is rough by what they have a planned
:01:11. > :01:15.for. The confidence was there. They've had to fight to get into the
:01:16. > :01:18.medal ride off and make the most of the opportunity. The eyeat thattians
:01:19. > :01:22.come back a little bit, though -- the eyeat thattians coming back a
:01:23. > :01:27.little bit. -- the Italians. Coming back a little bit. Great Britain
:01:28. > :01:31.still with a decent advantage as Kian Emadi peels off and takes his
:01:32. > :01:36.place on the back of the line. He just manages it get on the back of
:01:37. > :01:40.the wheel. I think he is fighting a bi. They got a slightly shortened
:01:41. > :01:44.turn. They are only half way into the race. The Italians, too,
:01:45. > :01:50.starting to show they are feeling the fight but the British team have
:01:51. > :01:54.three-quarters of a second buffer. Ollie Wood the 28-year-old from wake
:01:55. > :01:58.field has done his team on the front and now back with Stewart. But Italy
:01:59. > :02:07.chipping away at Great Britain's advantage. We could be in for a
:02:08. > :02:13.grand stand finish here. Well it was a a strong finish from Italy in the
:02:14. > :02:18.qualifying. So are the British going to fight or find a different
:02:19. > :02:21.strategier in up on schedule but the Italians are slowly closing in with
:02:22. > :02:26.less than a minute of racing to go now. This is going to be really
:02:27. > :02:31.close. The Italians have the world individual pursuit champion, the
:02:32. > :02:34.fantastic young rider. Ganna. Great Britain down to three now for the
:02:35. > :02:38.next couple of laps. Next time over the line. They are fighting, you can
:02:39. > :02:42.see, just about holding it together. Really grimacing. You can see the
:02:43. > :02:45.gaps in the wheels changing, shallow urn it is, showing, I don't have the
:02:46. > :02:49.confidence to go for the height. Suddenly it is really slipping away
:02:50. > :02:53.from Great Britain here as Italy turn the screw in the closing
:02:54. > :03:00.stages. Britain leading for so long in this team pursuit race for
:03:01. > :03:05.bronze. But it will be the Italians who take the bell first. An enormous
:03:06. > :03:08.gap. A gap Great Britain will not able to close in the final 250 m,
:03:09. > :03:12.the Italians have the bit between their teeth. The bronze medal is
:03:13. > :03:19.going to be theirs. Here they come, up over the line to take the gun,
:03:20. > :03:21.3.56. 935 and Great Britain finish this will World Championship in
:03:22. > :03:25.fourth. To be honest, I can't see what move
:03:26. > :03:29.they could have done. They went out fighting. They put the Italians
:03:30. > :03:35.under pressure. The Italians, the best form I've seen from them for
:03:36. > :03:39.years actually. 3.55 in qualifying, 5.56, becomed up well. And they are
:03:40. > :03:43.-- 5.56 and they are delighted with that performance. So they should be.
:03:44. > :03:47.It must be quite intimidating go up against a team like the British,
:03:48. > :03:52.with such a background of success in this event. And they rode, the
:03:53. > :03:56.Italians look like they've been doing this for years. But the
:03:57. > :03:59.British, I think, I think they can't complain there. They didn't
:04:00. > :04:03.technically make mistakes. They went out, they didn't go out too fast and
:04:04. > :04:09.just did everything that they could to try it take the fight to them but
:04:10. > :04:13.-- to take the fight to them but at the end of the day I think the
:04:14. > :04:18.Italians were the better squad today. Italy win the bronze medal in
:04:19. > :04:23.Hong Kong in the men's team pursuit and a very well-measured effort,
:04:24. > :04:34.indeed it was from them. Much to the delight of the backroom staff. CLARE
:04:35. > :04:40.BALDING: Among those watching on, will have been Latham. He was part
:04:41. > :04:46.of the qualifying. Now let's join the gold medal race again with
:04:47. > :04:49.Simon. COMMENTATOR: Thank you, well back.
:04:50. > :04:53.Ten seconds to go before this final and Australia coming up on to the
:04:54. > :05:00.track have completely changed their team. Away they go, Australia
:05:01. > :05:04.against New Zealand. Australia, the 2016 World Champions in this
:05:05. > :05:14.convenient. New Zealand who won the world title two years ago in Paris.
:05:15. > :05:18.Racing for Australia here, Cameron Meyer, the multiple world champion,
:05:19. > :05:23.he could be the driving force, Alex Porter. Two or three of those riders
:05:24. > :05:28.different to those which were listed on the start sheet. For New Zealand,
:05:29. > :05:38.Gough, Bulling, Kennett and kerling concerning. And Kergozou. Always
:05:39. > :05:42.very technical the Australian team N my opinion, the New Zealanders lucky
:05:43. > :05:49.to be here. I thought they might get relegated after the slight collision
:05:50. > :05:53.with Canada, yet it was Canada who was penalised when they fell, insult
:05:54. > :05:56.to injury, and they had a ride we are a broken collar bone. Australia
:05:57. > :06:03.changed their make-up after they went so close to World Record in
:06:04. > :06:06.qualifying. Cameron Meyer was one of the riders in qualifying when they
:06:07. > :06:14.did nearly break the record. He sat out the last race and, back in for
:06:15. > :06:17.this. There he is Opening kilometre slightly quicker than they were in
:06:18. > :06:21.qualifying when they went for that World Record ride and missed out on
:06:22. > :06:26.fractions of a second. So they just don't want it win here, they want to
:06:27. > :06:30.utterly dominate. New Zealand a classy outfit, too, and have only
:06:31. > :06:33.conceded three-quarters of a second at the moment but the Australians
:06:34. > :06:42.were instantly in control. I don't think they are likely to give that
:06:43. > :06:47.up. It looks as though Australia have taken a vice-like early grip.
:06:48. > :06:50.Heading up to a second's advantage, they have just gone over that
:06:51. > :06:53.already. Look at the changes, the height the Australian team are
:06:54. > :06:58.getting, a really well-drilled squad. Such confidence to actually
:06:59. > :07:03.do that, to get that height and drive on to the wheels. They have
:07:04. > :07:08.been known to come apart in the past, in pursuit of chasing medals
:07:09. > :07:12.but the confidence is there. The fitness is there across the squad at
:07:13. > :07:16.this World Championships. The New Zealanders fighting back now,
:07:17. > :07:29.though. They don't look quite as composed as the Australians but
:07:30. > :07:36.maybe that steadier start was a shrewed move. Battle in prospect for
:07:37. > :07:38.the gold medal. The laps go down Australians down to three and I can
:07:39. > :07:42.see they were slowed there. That might cause them a problem. It is
:07:43. > :07:47.dead level now. I think the New Zealand team is about to go into the
:07:48. > :07:54.lead as they come round into the last kilometre of this event. Sam
:07:55. > :07:58.Welsford, Cameron Meyer and porter are going to have to do it on their
:07:59. > :08:02.own. New Zealand, meanwhile still have their four - no they have gone
:08:03. > :08:06.down to three but New Zealand have the advantage. No Australia got it
:08:07. > :08:10.back, two tenths of a second They are both carrying a weak man in the
:08:11. > :08:14.team. It is now they manage the resources in the last three laps to
:08:15. > :08:18.the race. Two-and-a-half to G again the onboard camera gives us the shot
:08:19. > :08:24.back. Looking towards Cameron Meyer now. Australia look to try to pile
:08:25. > :08:26.it on. They are beginning to open up a very big lead here and the
:08:27. > :08:32.pressure is really on New Zealand. It doesn't look as if they've go the
:08:33. > :08:36.the legs top respond. Putting Meyer in was a shrewd move. He has helped
:08:37. > :08:39.in the closing stages. One-and-a-half seconds, they are
:08:40. > :08:42.going to take the title. Here come Australia, they are flying around
:08:43. > :08:53.the track, Cameron Meyer is doing the damage here. Here they come. Up
:08:54. > :09:03.towards the line. The world title will be theirs, 3.5 #1, 503. .5 --
:09:04. > :09:12.3.51.503. But it was all about claimk success. They deserved it. A
:09:13. > :09:16.master stroke it was putting Cameron Meyer in there for the final. So
:09:17. > :09:19.they are world champions again. It is worth pointing out it was a
:09:20. > :09:23.better ride than their qualifier. They got a catch in their qualifier.
:09:24. > :09:28.In this race they were up against a much stronger team. That 3.51 was
:09:29. > :09:35.done without any real assistance from the other side of the track. It
:09:36. > :09:39.changed their team around between the rounds. It wasn't as if they
:09:40. > :09:45.stuck with the same riders. They mixed it up New Zealand looked like
:09:46. > :09:47.they were going to get back on terms but they overextended to put
:09:48. > :09:53.themselves in that position. It is all about last time over the line.
:09:54. > :09:56.Meyer very much justified selection for that final. So Cameron Meyer is
:09:57. > :10:06.a World Champion for the seventh time on the track in his career.
:10:07. > :10:12.He also races on the road for the Dimension Data team but his presence
:10:13. > :10:18.on the frack again, very much welcome for Australia and the world
:10:19. > :10:26.of track cycling. So the Olympic silver medallists are
:10:27. > :10:31.the World Champions once more. Pleased with that and so they should
:10:32. > :10:37.be. Superb ride. It shows the strength and depth as well to be
:10:38. > :10:42.able to give the world's best times and just keep changing. The guide
:10:43. > :10:51.showing you have maybe more than half a dozen riders that can achieve
:10:52. > :10:55.thosep kinds of speeds. Time to greet family and friends who've made
:10:56. > :11:00.it here to Hong Kong. Probably about an eight or nine flight from
:11:01. > :11:06.Australia. Not too much of a difference of in time difference.
:11:07. > :11:09.Psalm Welsford. Part of the winning quartet as he was a year ago in
:11:10. > :11:13.London. And there is confirmation of the winning result: a good final but
:11:14. > :11:25.worthy winners in Australia. CLARE BALDING: Important World
:11:26. > :11:28.Champions for them. Having a disappointing Olympics in the
:11:29. > :11:36.velodrome. They were determined to win gold med als. Yes and to do a
:11:37. > :11:39.3.50 in the qualifying and 3.51 in the final, impressive. It doesn't
:11:40. > :11:43.make up for not winning Olympic gold but showing the strength and depth
:11:44. > :11:46.as Chris was saying there, to be able to produce some fantastic times
:11:47. > :11:52.with completely different riders. It was a great final to watch and close
:11:53. > :11:56.right to the end. As far as Great Britain's performance was concerned,
:11:57. > :11:59.against Italy in the bronze medal race, Jo, not helped by the fact
:12:00. > :12:04.that they lost a rider very early on. You see New Zealand and
:12:05. > :12:12.Australia finishing with three, fine, but you don't want to be only
:12:13. > :12:18.down with three with too far to go and Steven Burke dropped out. Twl
:12:19. > :12:24.depends on the tactics, they will they will have a meeting. I think he
:12:25. > :12:28.probably did what was asked of him. Did his jo, emptied his tank and
:12:29. > :12:32.left the other three to get on with T that'sp often the strategy and
:12:33. > :12:37.that can be the fastest way and that was what the team had today. They
:12:38. > :12:41.were fifth in qualifying in day 1, and they got up to fourth, they have
:12:42. > :12:46.progressed from yesterday. I know they'll be disappointed but young
:12:47. > :12:52.team, trying out new tactics, Burke normally rides man 2, he was man 1
:12:53. > :12:56.today and Kian an endurance rider to come fourth. I wouldn't like to say
:12:57. > :12:59.it was anybody's fault. I think they would like to believe it was the
:13:00. > :13:02.best line up on the day. The best strategy, they probably did their
:13:03. > :13:08.job as they were asked to do. That's all you can do. The other team were
:13:09. > :13:11.better. Who is sitting on the sidelines potentially to,back into
:13:12. > :13:19.World Champions next year or Commonwealth Games? They'll split to
:13:20. > :13:24.their nations? Ed Clancy a three-times Olympic champion, he is
:13:25. > :13:28.man 1, he is doing road racing with his pro team, so enjoying a bit of a
:13:29. > :13:34.refresher and there is another rider who may the want to come back and
:13:35. > :13:38.Andy Tennant, he rode two rounds of this, he will be gunning it get back
:13:39. > :13:42.into the team towards Tokyo. We have strength and depth in GB and these
:13:43. > :13:45.years are about experimenting with the line-ups and working out what
:13:46. > :13:49.will be the best going forward. Back it the track. The women are ready
:13:50. > :13:52.for the second in the best of three of their quarter-finals for the
:13:53. > :13:54.women's sprint. Stephanie Morton in this has the advantage having won
:13:55. > :14:02.the first race. Here's Simon. COMMENTATOR:.
:14:03. > :14:13.If you remember it was a good sprint. Morton wasn't letting her
:14:14. > :14:17.opponent come back. She had the staying power in her sprint to hold
:14:18. > :14:22.off the Russian rider all the way to the line It is hard to know how much
:14:23. > :14:26.more she had because the way she be a sell rauted, seated acceleration
:14:27. > :14:34.around the back straight over on the shoulder washings was it full gas or
:14:35. > :14:38.more to give T used -- accelerated. That used to be the tactics by the
:14:39. > :14:42.East Germans. They never won a race by more than half a way. It was
:14:43. > :14:47.difficult to know - was I close or did I have no chance at all? So I'm
:14:48. > :14:57.sure we are going to see and we might see in the next couple of
:14:58. > :15:03.minutes Voynova of Russia in the last chance sloop. She has a couple
:15:04. > :15:08.of gold medals, in the team sprint and 500 m time trials so we'll see
:15:09. > :15:14.her in that event later on in these Championships. She has to ride at
:15:15. > :15:20.the front whether she likes it or in the at the start of this three-lap
:15:21. > :15:23.race and needs to keep an eye on her opponent at all times. Your head
:15:24. > :15:28.needs to be on a swivel, doesn't t really? Yes. All these riders, we've
:15:29. > :15:33.commented on it many times over the years, are capable of riding around
:15:34. > :15:36.a lap of the track, whilst looking backwards and as spectators we
:15:37. > :15:41.barely notice the fact they are doing t they make it look so normal
:15:42. > :15:44.but when you stop and think, riding around at 50 kilometres an hour,
:15:45. > :15:49.without looking where you are going t really takes some doing. The
:15:50. > :15:53.sprint will be on shortly. The next time over the line they'll take the
:15:54. > :15:57.bell. Voynova still just looking over her shoulder, left and right,
:15:58. > :16:01.checking for moment from Stephanie Morton but Morton stays seated in
:16:02. > :16:05.the saddle all the way now. Down the back straight they go. Voynova
:16:06. > :16:10.giving testifying she's got, she knows she has to take this sprivenlt
:16:11. > :16:18.has Morton got the pace to come past her in they come up towards the
:16:19. > :16:23.line. It is really close again. Morton got it. She had the momentum
:16:24. > :16:30.in the final part, the final few metres to just, just take it on the
:16:31. > :16:35.line. Yes, I think she got that one Surprisingly I think she showed more
:16:36. > :16:38.confidence and the actual result and closeness of the finish
:16:39. > :16:41.demonstrated. She waited and confidently decided when to start
:16:42. > :16:47.the race, accelerated down the back straight. And Voynova, I think could
:16:48. > :16:52.have' pushed tactically a little harder, pushing her up, using the
:16:53. > :16:59.space... I have to say that is a a big scalp for Morton. Mar ton not
:17:00. > :17:06.panicking -- Morton not panicking, waited to the pack straight. That
:17:07. > :17:18.makes a ditches, that extra couple of metres gives you 50 centimetres
:17:19. > :17:22.or so of extra help. I think she was the fastest of the riders here, but
:17:23. > :17:32.irrelevant. She's through. The record books won't say Stephanie
:17:33. > :17:35.Morton who won by a bill metre. Hopefully you can hear the
:17:36. > :17:39.atmosphere lift in the background. The finish, a second one decided by
:17:40. > :17:46.a tyre's width already in this session. That's how close these
:17:47. > :17:50.Championships R after all that training -- Championships are. After
:17:51. > :18:01.all that time training and preparing, that is what it comes
:18:02. > :18:05.down to. Now we have Lee Wai Sze from Hong Kong. Nobody nipping off
:18:06. > :18:13.to the toilet or concession stands, all eyes on the track, it is Lee,
:18:14. > :18:17.against Kaarle McCulloch of Australia. And McCulloch has to win
:18:18. > :18:25.otherwise Lee will be through to the semifinals. Lee Wai Sze is on form
:18:26. > :18:28.and home territory. Got the support, which could make the difference in
:18:29. > :18:33.the last couple of seconds to have the crowd behind you. McCulloch very
:18:34. > :18:43.much a fighter, she won't be giving in easily. As ever, loving the
:18:44. > :18:49.segway camera shots. I filmed with the cameraman on the Tour de France
:18:50. > :18:53.in the month of July. A very skilled operator he is. I'm sure he is
:18:54. > :18:59.grateful they're taking it easy. I think he doesn't like running,
:19:00. > :19:04.that's what it is. But he's doing a good job rolling alongside them,
:19:05. > :19:16.giving us a bird's eye view of the action.
:19:17. > :19:22.Lee a picture of concentration as she comes past the finishing line on
:19:23. > :19:28.the first lap. Just ups the pace a little bit. Kaarle McCulloch happy
:19:29. > :19:33.to bide her time. Lee probably got the stronger acceleration of the
:19:34. > :19:37.two. So wants it leave it late if she can. McCulloch doesn't. She's
:19:38. > :19:42.lifting the pace, getting the height. Here they come now, taking
:19:43. > :19:46.the bell. McCulloch is looking for more height but had to go back up
:19:47. > :19:51.the track it find T Lee has left the door open alittle bit now. She left
:19:52. > :19:56.the door ajar and Kaarle McCulloch has tried to come racing through T
:19:57. > :20:02.neck-and-neck up towards the line. It will be close but for McCulloch's
:20:03. > :20:05.point of view, not close enough. The crowd are on their feet. Lee is
:20:06. > :20:09.through in straight rides to the semifinals of the women's sprint.
:20:10. > :20:14.That's what being in front of a home crowd does for you, I think. She
:20:15. > :20:17.really did well to salvage that. She showed how motivated she is for this
:20:18. > :20:21.competition. It was a real mistake to leave the door open. Kaarle
:20:22. > :20:25.McCulloch couldn't believe she had the opportunity and hesitated for a
:20:26. > :20:29.second, thought blimey, surely I'm not going to get this open door but
:20:30. > :20:36.what a fightback, all in the space of about seven seconds of racing.
:20:37. > :20:39.So, she too is through in straight rides in the women's sprint. I have
:20:40. > :20:43.to say I'm enjoying this women's sprint. It is close. I think that's
:20:44. > :20:47.what we are enjoying. You are not sure what the result is going to be,
:20:48. > :20:57.there are no superstrong favourites. Every one of these matches goes all
:20:58. > :21:00.the way to the line. You can see the hesitation of McCulloch thinking -
:21:01. > :21:05.oh, I have the opportunity. Is that gap really there? Is there a trick?
:21:06. > :21:09.But, no, she didn't quite have the legs to go through it and to stay
:21:10. > :21:15.there but good to see a sporting embrace between the pair of them.
:21:16. > :21:23.And good to see McCulloch back on form and back in the Australian team
:21:24. > :21:26.as well. So nobody will be leaving early from here with Lee safely
:21:27. > :21:37.through. Now we are up to number 3. Heat three. Race 2.
:21:38. > :21:45.Vogel was dominant in the first race. She led from start to finish
:21:46. > :21:54.or was in control from start 20 finish against -- start to finish
:21:55. > :21:59.against Basova from Ukraine. We talked about favourites. This is the
:22:00. > :22:10.only race where there is a favourite with Vogel. Vogel a classy rider.
:22:11. > :22:14.She has been on the podium 12 times of the World Championships. Seven
:22:15. > :22:23.times on the top step. The fastest in qualifying. Basova in 11th. A
:22:24. > :22:27.vague indicator when you get down to the match sprints but it shows the
:22:28. > :22:33.engine power and we know that Vogel is also a good tactician. We saw the
:22:34. > :22:37.clock on the wall as the riders went down the back straight. I thought we
:22:38. > :22:46.were going to have the first track stand. A track pause, really. A
:22:47. > :22:52.momentary pause in proceedings. We are seven hours ahead of you. Vogel
:22:53. > :22:56.trying to force the issue and doing a good job Track be standing is the
:22:57. > :23:02.way to force your opponent to the front. You can see the back wheel
:23:03. > :23:06.being bounced up the track and it is when you accelerate, fixed gears, if
:23:07. > :23:11.you are heading up, it is hard to accelerate. They are allowed to do
:23:12. > :23:16.this for 30 seconds and then they will be directed to carry on, the
:23:17. > :23:20.lead rider to carry on and if not, there you go, the stopwatch is in
:23:21. > :23:24.place now. Without that, there is the potential they could just sit
:23:25. > :23:28.there for ten minutes. Interesting, when they just roll forward a little
:23:29. > :23:32.bit. I wonder if that is a restarting of the clock or... Oh,
:23:33. > :23:36.irrelevant now. Basova has decided to go for it. Going for a long
:23:37. > :23:41.sprint and Vogel has to respond and plenty of ground to make up. Basova
:23:42. > :23:45.has decided her best chance is to catch her opponent unawares and go
:23:46. > :23:50.for a long one as she takes the bell and suddenly it is a real leg
:23:51. > :23:54.shredder for Vogel who has to chase for all these' worth. But she is
:23:55. > :23:57.closing the gap. Has she got the legs to pull past the Ukrainian,
:23:58. > :24:02.down the finishing straight. It'll be close. Oh she's got it. What a
:24:03. > :24:08.ride. Vogel had to work for that but got there in the end. Well hats off
:24:09. > :24:11.to Basova for trying that. We don't see that move often when there is
:24:12. > :24:15.only two on the track to take your opponent by surprise is very
:24:16. > :24:27.difficult and Vogel, lucky to get away with that one. It looked from
:24:28. > :24:42.the track stand that Basova was think being that. And it was a split
:24:43. > :24:48.second, possibly two before Vogel realise this was it. Yes, it is
:24:49. > :24:56.about using your head. An opportunity for Basova. I'm glad she
:24:57. > :25:00.did T she made it an interesting race for us. She will have been
:25:01. > :25:05.thinking - what is my best chance and what will Vogel not expect me to
:25:06. > :25:11.do? It was a great chase around that final lap and Vogel had a lot to do,
:25:12. > :25:18.even with less than half a lap to go but plenty of pure speed carried her
:25:19. > :25:22.home in the end. So Vogel also through, to Stephanie more ten and
:25:23. > :25:25.Lee and Vogel all flea straight rides but it doesn't tell the story
:25:26. > :25:29.of this quarter final in the women's match sprint. We've had some
:25:30. > :25:40.excellent races which have been very close. -- all three straight rides.
:25:41. > :25:49.Now we have this one, from the 17-year-old Gros from France and the
:25:50. > :25:57.Lithuanian, who has the advantage. It was A victory by a tyre's width
:25:58. > :26:00.no more than that. Leading off and quickly leaving our cameraman hyped.
:26:01. > :26:05.Happy to get this going and under way. She's going to inject a little
:26:06. > :26:11.bit of pace and control the young Frenchwoman.
:26:12. > :26:17.Gros has had some fantastic sprinters around her in the French
:26:18. > :26:23.team, will have learned an awful lot, despite her lack of years. Not
:26:24. > :26:28.being drawn in, oh, interestingly, decides she's going to take control
:26:29. > :26:34.there. Some assertive racing here from the young teenage star of
:26:35. > :26:49.French cycling. Still got a lot to do but she'll tribe do it from the
:26:50. > :26:58.front and the Lithuanian leads them into the finishing straight. The
:26:59. > :27:04.push from the front. But Simona so experienced. Like Christina Vogel,
:27:05. > :27:07.12 times she's been on the podium in the World Championships over many
:27:08. > :27:13.years, over a good many years and she just had the experience there as
:27:14. > :27:17.well as the legs to beat Gros. But remember the name, Gros, she is a
:27:18. > :27:22.double French elite champion on the track at the age of 16. She bypassed
:27:23. > :27:26.the junior category completely. Only racing bikes for about three years.
:27:27. > :27:39.I think we'll hear a lot more from her. Krupeckaite I thought got
:27:40. > :27:43.caught out. She started the lap early But confidence and experience
:27:44. > :27:47.for you, she knew with this woman I've got to start my charge early.
:27:48. > :27:51.Think Gros was taken by surprise a little bit but she started to come
:27:52. > :27:53.at her around the penultimate bend. There is the confirmation.
:27:54. > :28:12.Semifinalists in straight rides: A fantastic quarter-final to enjoy,
:28:13. > :28:18.particularly the one where Vogel came out on top, because of the
:28:19. > :28:23.tactics, there, standing and Basova to go for T Vogel was looking to
:28:24. > :28:29.take the race from the back. And started from the front and she
:28:30. > :28:38.forced it and Basova thought I'll go and catch you unawares. You can see
:28:39. > :28:46.Christine got her head down, not looking at the Ukrainian rider and
:28:47. > :28:50.she's creeping forward and here we go, any second she launches the
:28:51. > :28:54.attack. You don't expect that. I think Vogel would assume she would
:28:55. > :28:57.roll forward and wnd up steadily. She realises now it is a full
:28:58. > :29:01.commitment and evident. Vogel is putting the effort in, the gap is
:29:02. > :29:04.huge, what you will see is the gap stays fairly big for quite a long
:29:05. > :29:08.time but all it takes, once you start creeping closer to the rider
:29:09. > :29:12.in front, you start it gain the benefit of the slipstream and then
:29:13. > :29:16.it is almost exaggerated. You get this effect withdrew come right on
:29:17. > :29:21.to the wheel. She had to work so hard to get there A huge effort. She
:29:22. > :29:26.gets down and it exaggerates that transition that. Will have taken a
:29:27. > :29:29.huge amount out of Vogel legs. I think Morton will be rubbing her
:29:30. > :29:35.hands together in glee because that will play into her hands for the
:29:36. > :29:40.semifinal. They have until tomorrow. Sorry not Stephanie Morton. It is
:29:41. > :29:46.Lee. A great semifinal. You see she made a mess of her tactics but still
:29:47. > :29:49.managed to win. A question from a viewer, who says - why do track
:29:50. > :29:57.sprinters sit down when the road spripters sit up? The diedance is
:29:58. > :30:04.higher in track, so when you are peddling fast you have to the sit
:30:05. > :30:12.down. -- the cadence. They use bigger gear bus they pedal
:30:13. > :30:17.at a higher -- bigger gears but they pedal at a higher cadence. If you
:30:18. > :30:21.are standing, you want it get on to the saddle and pedal as fast as you
:30:22. > :30:26.can. Let's look at Morton, you can see on the outside, her style. Steph
:30:27. > :30:31.has a huge engine, so much power but she got stuck on the hips a bit. She
:30:32. > :30:35.didn't run at her opponent with space. If you come off a dead heel,
:30:36. > :30:39.it is difficult to get past. She did win but not an easy ride. Tactically
:30:40. > :30:43.she will be kicking herself. That will not win the race come the final
:30:44. > :30:45.or semifinal. She needs to be really astute as well as having all that
:30:46. > :30:55.power. Still able to see of the young
:30:56. > :31:01.whippersnappers. It was a fascinating round for me. She is
:31:02. > :31:05.only 17, a junior rider, at a senior World Championships. That was
:31:06. > :31:10.particularly impressive by her to get that far in the com petition. It
:31:11. > :31:14.is all good experience. The men's scratch race featuring Chris Latham.
:31:15. > :31:18.He is a relatively new recruit to British cycling, joining the
:31:19. > :31:24.programme in 2012, but this is a race in which he won in in November.
:31:25. > :31:37.Here's Simon. COMMENTATOR: 60 laps of the track
:31:38. > :31:41.here for this field in the men's scratch race. As you say, Claire,
:31:42. > :31:48.Chris Latham taking his place in this line-up. Half the field
:31:49. > :31:53.starting up by the fence at the top. They will roll around, and once they
:31:54. > :31:59.have completed the first lap, everybody is up and running, the
:32:00. > :32:04.race proper will get underway. As long as the starter it happy, they
:32:05. > :32:07.are all grouped together, fire the gun. Not normally a problem in this
:32:08. > :32:13.event, but when we have the elimination race, when being at the
:32:14. > :32:19.front is critical, sometimes it can neutralise the start, it is fraught.
:32:20. > :32:25.This one is interesting because it is only about that final passage
:32:26. > :32:31.over the line as they get themselves under way, 15 kilometres to go. One
:32:32. > :32:34.or two riders, apart from Latham, Sebastien Mora from Spain, winning
:32:35. > :32:55.the world title in London last year. Lukas List.
:32:56. > :33:02.The Austrian rider going through. From Switzerland, the current
:33:03. > :33:09.European champion. They are rolling around the bottom at the moment.
:33:10. > :33:13.Nobody has a chance to try and accelerate. They are rolling out
:33:14. > :33:18.quite a pace. It is organised so it is hard to tell, but they are
:33:19. > :33:22.probably going over 50 kph at the moment. All the riders roll into
:33:23. > :33:25.this event, 58 laps to go. An awful long way, the speeds that they
:33:26. > :33:31.travel. A lot of these riders won't be able to contest the sprint, so
:33:32. > :33:36.they will look for an opportunity to attack. That opportunity will only
:33:37. > :33:39.arise when one or two people come together and say they don't want to
:33:40. > :33:44.be on the front. Everybody swings off and there is a hole underneath
:33:45. > :33:56.to dive down into two start at the tack. The American rider on the
:33:57. > :34:03.front. -- start the attack. Here we go, here is the first opportunity.
:34:04. > :34:08.Chris Latham get himself up to the pointed end, just in view of the
:34:09. > :34:12.pointed end, second place, now moving to the front very briefly.
:34:13. > :34:18.The former world champion on the front. As you can see, nobody
:34:19. > :34:31.putting the hammer down yet. 54 laps to go.
:34:32. > :34:37.The orange of the Netherlands, a former winner of the bronze medal in
:34:38. > :34:41.this event in a previous World Championship say few years ago. For
:34:42. > :34:47.the first time, we see Australia with Porter on the front. The pace
:34:48. > :34:53.is picking up. Some of the riders don't want to get involved at the
:34:54. > :34:57.front, a gap has opened up in the middle of the field as people are
:34:58. > :35:01.playing brinkmanship to not close that gap. Chris Latham just caught
:35:02. > :35:04.in the second half of that group, but now it is joining backed up
:35:05. > :35:13.together. Latham is about halfway back in the field. Enough speed that
:35:14. > :35:17.if they ease up at the front, we might see our first attack to come.
:35:18. > :35:22.Numerically, the first attack almost never succeeds, but a small chance
:35:23. > :35:33.is better than none, which is better for a lot of these riders. Everyone
:35:34. > :35:35.doing a bit at the front, nobody staying at the front for more than a
:35:36. > :35:46.few revolutions of the pedals. Heading back down the bunch, you can
:35:47. > :35:50.tell when the pace picks up, because you will notice they all start to
:35:51. > :35:53.look around, they want to see where everybody is and whether they can
:35:54. > :35:59.exploit an opportunity. It was Chris Latham on the front. Felix English
:36:00. > :36:06.racing for Ireland, based in Brighton. Lucas List from Germany,
:36:07. > :36:15.right up the banking, 48 laps to go as they cross the line now. Going at
:36:16. > :36:21.a decent lick without anything decisive yet. Four.
:36:22. > :36:31.The back of the American rider's like, picking up the Italian in his
:36:32. > :36:35.tracks. A lot of riders favour the Mirror advisors, which we got a
:36:36. > :36:41.glimpse of. It stops your opponent ceiling where you are looking. It
:36:42. > :36:46.gives them as little information as possible. A first surge there.
:36:47. > :36:54.Latham on the inside, briefly at the front. Felix English, who was on the
:36:55. > :37:00.front just over a lap ago, is back there once more.
:37:01. > :37:06.They are trying to give nothing away in their body language as well. They
:37:07. > :37:10.are really putting the pressure on the pedals at the front, trying to
:37:11. > :37:14.pretend they are rolling through. But if they spot a gap forming in
:37:15. > :37:19.the right place, they will totally commit themselves to getting a move
:37:20. > :37:22.going. As you can see, they are opening, gaps opening up all over
:37:23. > :37:30.the place. They are starting to turn the screw. Nobody for anybody to
:37:31. > :37:36.catch a breath. The Belarussian, 20 years of age. Has a look around to
:37:37. > :37:45.see what damage has been done. Followed by the rider from Hungary,
:37:46. > :37:50.a former national road champion. There he is. This is how people find
:37:51. > :37:55.themselves in a move up the road. The pace gets higher and higher, and
:37:56. > :37:59.they will start to swing up in the line. Gaps form, and the right
:38:00. > :38:03.combination of people think they will take advantage. Latham has
:38:04. > :38:07.sensed the danger, too. He has moved further up the front. When he swings
:38:08. > :38:13.are, he comes down from around halfway in the field to keep himself
:38:14. > :38:17.in contact if something develops. Porter looks strong, the Australian.
:38:18. > :38:20.He is having a go, injecting pace, encouraging somebody to take it on.
:38:21. > :38:37.Twice European Madison champion. Felix English staying up towards the
:38:38. > :38:43.front. Now on the front of the race. The pace is really on here. They are
:38:44. > :38:47.neutralising each other. You can almost not see if the race is full
:38:48. > :38:50.on at the moment. A real intensity about this race even though it looks
:38:51. > :38:55.like they are going around together, they really are pushing quite hard
:38:56. > :39:03.here. English rides up the track. A little look back from the Kazakhstan
:39:04. > :39:08.E. Asian championships silver medallist. Latham at the front once
:39:09. > :39:12.more. Alex Porter from Australia goes to the front on the inside of
:39:13. > :39:18.the British rider. They are sensing the pressure now. They know they can
:39:19. > :39:22.only expend so much energy. They have to look after that. Once it has
:39:23. > :39:26.gone, it is gone. They are being cautious. They want to keep in line,
:39:27. > :39:31.keep close to the front and expend as little energy as possible. That
:39:32. > :39:38.is what you get these short turns. A lull in the pace. Felix English once
:39:39. > :39:44.more at there. The rider from Mexico as well, and it is the American
:39:45. > :39:49.stock English has been going to the front quite a lot in this race, in
:39:50. > :39:53.short terms, costing him energy to keep himself in contention. He has
:39:54. > :40:05.now given up and gone to the back, which is risky.
:40:06. > :40:14.There is going to be a break. It has to happen soon. 34 laps remaining as
:40:15. > :40:17.they come around this time. An assertive ride so far from Chris
:40:18. > :40:23.Latham. He is being careful not to do too much work but he is there or
:40:24. > :40:27.thereabouts. Is this the move? One of the most experienced riders, one
:40:28. > :40:31.of the real big hitters in this World Championship race. A
:40:32. > :40:36.three-time world champion, winning this title before. The European
:40:37. > :40:42.champion from Switzerland getting involved in it. Gaps don't look big,
:40:43. > :40:46.but the pace is so high here. With such quality riders, already the
:40:47. > :40:49.danger has been sensed. English wants to get across the gap. He
:40:50. > :40:54.didn't want to bring everyone with him but he was forced to be the one
:40:55. > :40:58.to chase it down. He has neutralised it, and we may see a counter now.
:40:59. > :41:02.Chris Latham is down towards the back end of the field. Two on the
:41:03. > :41:06.back at the moment as it starts to kick off. He has got away with that
:41:07. > :41:10.one but the counter will be interesting. Some serious players
:41:11. > :41:16.doing a little bit more than testing the water there. The next move
:41:17. > :41:23.decides to go underneath, around the bottom of the track, 13 laps to go
:41:24. > :41:27.of the track now. The first sighting of Sebastien Mora, the defending
:41:28. > :41:30.what champion, and English as well disappearing from the front end of
:41:31. > :41:40.the race for a few laps. Coming up towards the front again will. Four
:41:41. > :41:45.is the Latham took advantage of the low in the race to go all the way
:41:46. > :41:49.from back to front. Expending the least energy, dipping through on the
:41:50. > :41:51.inside. He is back at the pointed end, watching for an opportunity.
:41:52. > :42:05.There it is. An attack, seen straightaway.
:42:06. > :42:10.Opening up a little bit. Porter Australia as well is trying to close
:42:11. > :42:13.the gap. It does look as though it is the Italian who is closest to
:42:14. > :42:26.bridging the gap. Latham is fourth in line, he knows how dangerous this
:42:27. > :42:31.attack is. That would have been a meaningful gap that they had.
:42:32. > :42:35.Managing to bridge the gap hind everybody chasing, because this
:42:36. > :42:40.isn't a points race. Only one sprint matters. It is in all their interest
:42:41. > :42:45.to get this back on terms. If you keep this pace up, physically,
:42:46. > :42:52.people won't be able to monitor moves any more. Latham is up there
:42:53. > :42:57.too now. Took it down to the bottom of the track to close it down and
:42:58. > :43:01.stop anybody countering. Nobody wants to pass. That is because they
:43:02. > :43:05.are feeling the pressure now. This is the moment when it could fall
:43:06. > :43:22.apart. 20 formats remaining, tend to go. -- 24 laps remaining, ten to go.
:43:23. > :43:24.They need to get moving on. This is the most serious move up the race. A
:43:25. > :43:39.bit of hesitation behind. This is it. It's breaking up now.
:43:40. > :43:46.Porter, not the best companion for a breakaway. Porter has decided to
:43:47. > :43:51.give it up. That was a serious move, then. You could see it on his face
:43:52. > :43:56.before he made the move for a second ago, but staying up at the top with
:43:57. > :44:01.Felix English at there as well for Ireland. Sebastien Mora in the red
:44:02. > :44:07.and yellow of Spain. He is in third. Latham coming through of the track.
:44:08. > :44:13.Latham rolling through, this time getting himself back towards the
:44:14. > :44:21.front to monitor proceedings. The pace being held. The tempo at the
:44:22. > :44:29.front of the pellet on, everyone still together. None of these moves
:44:30. > :44:33.opening up a gap yet. The interesting point in this race is
:44:34. > :44:42.right now. This is the logical time for a break to go. You can get
:44:43. > :44:44.surprise move slipping away as people think about the final dash to
:44:45. > :45:05.the line. Felix English, a little gap, there
:45:06. > :45:09.he is, the Netherlands coming through, too.
:45:10. > :45:19.None of them in that move properly committed to getting it away. So it
:45:20. > :45:25.has been reabsorbed. The pace has been injected, so will anybody try
:45:26. > :45:30.and counter? 17 laps to go, 16 as they come round into the home
:45:31. > :45:34.straight. Andreas Moller from Austria. Because he is alone,
:45:35. > :45:39.everybody is hesitating, and he's riding away. Nobody wants to do the
:45:40. > :45:44.chasing, everybody wants to do the countering. Andreas Moller is a
:45:45. > :45:48.rider that can sit there all day. They are going to counter, but he
:45:49. > :45:53.has a head start, a quarter of a lap in front. He needs company with 15
:45:54. > :45:58.laps to go. It is a long way to go. Sebastien Mora has decided to lead
:45:59. > :46:02.the chase. Alex Porter on his wheels straightaway. Sebastien Mora decided
:46:03. > :46:07.to commit and Porter was with him. The others are now strung out behind
:46:08. > :46:11.them. They have managed to get on the wheel. Sebastien Mora hasn't got
:46:12. > :46:15.an advantage, he knows it and sit up. He might have enough time to
:46:16. > :46:23.recover and get back into this race. Porter desperately tries to get into
:46:24. > :46:27.any move, overplaying his hand. Always involved and looking to see
:46:28. > :46:29.if there is a move in the offing, English instigating one now. Two
:46:30. > :46:41.riders for company. As Chris was saying, Chris Latham up
:46:42. > :46:46.towards the front once again. Latham has got himself in a good position
:46:47. > :46:50.with only a dozen laps to go. That was his opportunity. The counter
:46:51. > :46:54.came underneath him. He has decided not to dive after these two.
:46:55. > :47:02.Entering that portion of the race, we just discussed, 11th -- 11 laps
:47:03. > :47:11.to go. The rider at the back is the local rider from Hong Kong. Lunch
:47:12. > :47:21.The chase is on some of the European champion from Switzerland now closes
:47:22. > :47:25.the gap and goes flying past them. Small gaps mean a different thing as
:47:26. > :47:30.they come into the last two minutes of racing. Nobody wants to do the
:47:31. > :47:36.racing. Ten metres can be enough to give yourself an opportunity. Into
:47:37. > :47:44.the closing laps will stop a chance for one or two riders.
:47:45. > :47:53.Latham at the front at the moment, eight laps to go Latham is in a
:47:54. > :48:06.position to do something about it. This will probably come down to a
:48:07. > :48:10.sprint. A courageous move, a long shot with seven laps to go until the
:48:11. > :48:14.final sprint, but he's going to make the most of it. He's going for it.
:48:15. > :48:20.Andreas Moller is trying to close the gap.
:48:21. > :48:29.He has gone! Moving away from the field. They have got a lot of work
:48:30. > :48:34.to do to Khachanov. Half a dozen laps left. No one wants to do the
:48:35. > :48:39.chasing, a quarter lap advantage already. He will accelerate as they
:48:40. > :48:43.start the sprint, but that is a big buffer. Although he is alone, he
:48:44. > :48:51.knows, in five laps time, this race is all over. That last kilometre, he
:48:52. > :48:57.might well do this, half a lap lead. Totally committed, four laps of
:48:58. > :49:02.Purgatory for him. They are not chasing him. It looks like he is
:49:03. > :49:05.going to be able to do it. He has won a bronze and a silver medal in
:49:06. > :49:09.the European Championships in the last couple of years, he might be
:49:10. > :49:12.able to top it all by winning gold at the World Championships. The
:49:13. > :49:21.charge and acceleration has started behind him. They reeling him in. The
:49:22. > :49:22.longest three laps of his life. They are closing him down, in the same
:49:23. > :49:36.straight now. Way too quick. Lucas List has gone
:49:37. > :49:41.off the front. Fascinating long sprint tactics, and they might pay.
:49:42. > :49:47.I think he is going to get it. Less than 250 metres to go.
:49:48. > :49:55.Coming on strong down the back straight. He is in real pain here
:49:56. > :50:01.but he will do it and hang on. He took his chance and made it happen.
:50:02. > :50:08.He has won in a grand manner. What a ride! Taking the world title. He did
:50:09. > :50:13.it the hard way. He had the courage of his convictions and saw his
:50:14. > :50:33.opportunity, grabbing it with both hands. A great race,
:50:34. > :50:41.taking it. Coming over the line, Chris Latham from Great Britain. A
:50:42. > :50:46.fantastic final charge. He timed his effort well. We hardly saw him in
:50:47. > :50:52.the race. That was why, he was waiting for the final sprint. What a
:50:53. > :50:55.ride for him, Adrian Teklinski, with three laps to go, I wouldn't have
:50:56. > :51:00.thought he would make it, but he found somewhere to hang on. More
:51:01. > :51:12.than two K out, starting to sprint, it will take him some time to cover
:51:13. > :51:15.from that effort. What a great ride from Chris Latham of Great Britain.
:51:16. > :51:19.He claims the bronze medal in that wild sprint at the end of the
:51:20. > :51:24.scratch final. We talked about long shot early on in that race, Adrian
:51:25. > :51:29.Teklinski took the opportunity way, way too soon for the sprint. Nobody
:51:30. > :51:35.wanted to chase. They thought he would get swallowed up. He just
:51:36. > :51:39.drove for the line and hung on. The longest two minutes of his life. A
:51:40. > :51:44.surprised. Adrian Teklinski, the 27 surprised. Adrian Teklinski, the 27
:51:45. > :51:52.year, no wonder he needs a moment or two to catches breath. As is the
:51:53. > :51:56.tradition. He has a flag in his hand. A moment he will savour. They
:51:57. > :52:05.will have two drag him off the track, I'm sure. Adrian Teklinski is
:52:06. > :52:06.the new world champion. Liss from Germany takes over, and a great
:52:07. > :52:15.bronze for Chris Latham. CLARE BALDING: A first championship
:52:16. > :52:22.medal for Chris Latham, it was difficult to see on the camera shots
:52:23. > :52:25.how Chris was doing, but he did it. He was well positioned with ten laps
:52:26. > :52:31.to go. He was keeping out of trouble. We are so focused on the
:52:32. > :52:35.Polish rider, such an epic ride from him, we couldn't see what was
:52:36. > :52:38.happening with the main bunch, but a fantastic result for Chris, he will
:52:39. > :52:45.be over the moon with that bronze. A great result for him. Credit to
:52:46. > :52:49.Liss, how much does that hurt? It hurts a lot. I do love it when
:52:50. > :52:54.someone goes for a long run and it pays off. It makes really good
:52:55. > :53:00.viewing. In a scratch race, people don't want it to be a spin. He had
:53:01. > :53:01.incredible power were that he sustained throughout a number of
:53:02. > :53:08.laps there. If you tried to make it and the
:53:09. > :53:13.bunch got them. I am well impressed with that. I like some body with a
:53:14. > :53:17.brave move like that to take it on and holding out for the win.
:53:18. > :53:23.Incredible. Somewhere back in the bunch, Chris Latham gets his way
:53:24. > :53:26.through to take the bronze medal, but for Adrian Teklinski, a hugely
:53:27. > :53:31.emotional moment, he is the world champion. After such a brave, brave
:53:32. > :53:37.move, to hang on, and he must have thought he was going to get caught,
:53:38. > :53:42.huge reaction in the velodrome, just look at him. You saw him lunging for
:53:43. > :53:47.the line. He thought they were right on his back wheel. He is putting
:53:48. > :53:53.every single ounce of effort into it. You can see what it means to him
:53:54. > :53:57.there. Let's see if we can see more of Chris Latham. We can see him post
:53:58. > :54:01.race, and hopefully we're going to get an interview with him very
:54:02. > :54:07.shortly. But I think he is completely astounded by that. I
:54:08. > :54:10.don't think that would be expected. You can never be super confident of
:54:11. > :54:14.winning a medal in it, but if you ride sensibly, which he did, he
:54:15. > :54:18.positioned himself very well. He didn't waste energy in the first
:54:19. > :54:22.half of the race, marking the danger men, and he clearly had the legs for
:54:23. > :54:25.the sprint at the end. That is fantastic, a great result for him
:54:26. > :54:31.and the team. It is great, because we have a man that will emerge, a
:54:32. > :54:41.bit of a gap in endurance racing, so this is our new hero. Let's talk to
:54:42. > :54:44.Chris. Congratulations, a beautifully timed
:54:45. > :54:47.sprint to get on the podium, a bronze medal at the World
:54:48. > :54:51.Championships, how does it sound? I am happy with that. The lads were
:54:52. > :54:59.unlucky. We deserved to win in the team pursuit, but I am happy to come
:55:00. > :55:06.away with a medal finally. A great ride from Adrian Teklinski. I wasn't
:55:07. > :55:11.sure he would do it. It would need a good spring to bridge the gap going
:55:12. > :55:16.that early, but he held on more and more, and did all right.
:55:17. > :55:21.But you really turned it on in the last 1.5 laps to get into position
:55:22. > :55:30.to stream towards the line. I was in a decent position most of the time.
:55:31. > :55:37.I had a Greek tale, I don't know if I saw it. I followed Felix, the
:55:38. > :55:40.Irish lad, quite a good lead out there.
:55:41. > :55:44.Congratulations, they will rush you onto the podium to get your medal,
:55:45. > :55:49.but many congratulations thanks a lot.
:55:50. > :55:52.STUDIO: It take a while for him to realise the level of that
:55:53. > :55:56.achievement. Such a difficult race, so many different things can happen.
:55:57. > :55:59.He felt sorry for the team pursuit. He was part of the qualification for
:56:00. > :56:04.that, but didn't make the line-up because he had the scratch race for
:56:05. > :56:10.the bronze medal, which they lost to Italy. Jill had the opportunity to
:56:11. > :56:15.catch up with Steven Burke stop another solid ride from the team,
:56:16. > :56:19.but just outside the medals also a sad place to finish, fourth, are you
:56:20. > :56:23.disappointed? Yeah, initially with our reaction,
:56:24. > :56:29.it was great to come forth, but the Italians were the better team in the
:56:30. > :56:32.final. They beat us and it was the best we could do. Onwards and
:56:33. > :56:35.upwards from here, three more years to get it right.
:56:36. > :56:40.As Clare Balding keep saying, you win or you learn. A huge learning
:56:41. > :56:47.potential to take away from the work championship 's. Definitely. To
:56:48. > :56:52.qualify fifth and get a chance for bronze, we are all excited and up
:56:53. > :56:58.for it. So now, it is just excitement. Three more years to Rio.
:56:59. > :57:01.We still have the World Championships, and it is a massive
:57:02. > :57:04.goal. Outside the medals is disappointing.
:57:05. > :57:08.Disappointing, but as we saw with the women's pursuit team, so much
:57:09. > :57:14.potential in the group. Definitely. Just now, we are just learning, and
:57:15. > :57:20.building, and working with each other. We used six men out there,
:57:21. > :57:25.figuring out who goes best where. A lot of lessons have been learned.
:57:26. > :57:30.Four years ago, you were taking part in the kilo. Now part of the pursuit
:57:31. > :57:33.team, how are you enjoying the switch?
:57:34. > :57:39.It is all right, produced similar results stop it is good, although it
:57:40. > :57:43.is disappointing to finish outside the medals, I enjoy the team
:57:44. > :57:47.atmosphere and competing, winning or losing, as a team. I am enjoying the
:57:48. > :57:52.team pursuit. Very much a work in progress, this
:57:53. > :57:58.team, isn't it? Yeah, saying that, there is potential in the team. We
:57:59. > :58:01.got a lot of riders here who are now going really well. It is not like
:58:02. > :58:06.they are not very good at progressing, already they are top
:58:07. > :58:09.level. We are battling for the bronze, and it slipped away on the
:58:10. > :58:14.day, but plenty more to come, hopefully.
:58:15. > :58:18.To be part of this new quartet, if you like, to come here and see them
:58:19. > :58:22.be competitive, up there with the best in the world, and some big
:58:23. > :58:25.Olympic teams here, other nations bringing top teams here, you must be
:58:26. > :58:30.encouraged to see what's coming through. Very much so. The lads
:58:31. > :58:35.across the three rides have done well. You can see the great
:58:36. > :58:38.potential. For the three years leading up to Tokyo, I have enjoyed
:58:39. > :58:42.the last few months working with the lads. We have learned from each
:58:43. > :58:45.other coming into these World Championships. It is very
:58:46. > :58:49.encouraging to see. People still talking about Tokyo, is
:58:50. > :58:55.it very much on your minds? I will only be 32 there. There are
:58:56. > :58:58.on my mind. That is what we will work towards over the next couple of
:58:59. > :59:03.years. We can really improve over the next few years and catch up with
:59:04. > :59:07.the lads, the Kiwis, the Aussies. Don't get me wrong, they did
:59:08. > :59:09.fantastically well, but we can bridge the gap and make a good
:59:10. > :59:13.competition of it. Thank you very much indeed.
:59:14. > :59:16.STUDIO: Good to hear the belief, they know these are the building
:59:17. > :59:22.block stages and other riders can come in and form a call that works.
:59:23. > :59:29.It is not like they turned up with the a squad and underperformed,
:59:30. > :59:32.there are areas to improve but there is so much potential. The way the
:59:33. > :59:38.event is going, it is getting faster and faster, it is almost like a
:59:39. > :59:41.sprint, recover, sprint, recover. 20 years ago, it was getting four
:59:42. > :59:47.individual pursuit riders together and seeing how fast they came go.
:59:48. > :59:50.Kian Emadi, a real talent being converted into team pursuit. He
:59:51. > :59:54.could well be on the line-up. But there is so much hard work to be
:59:55. > :59:57.done between now and Tokyo, so plenty of scope for potential to
:59:58. > :00:02.improve. Australia had the benefit of Cameron
:00:03. > :00:06.Meyer coming back from the road to join the pursuit team. Is there
:00:07. > :00:12.anybody in the British setup who might come into it from road racing?
:00:13. > :00:14.Definitely. Ed Clancy is the obvious one, three-time Olympic champion,
:00:15. > :00:20.spending a couple of years on the road. Jon Dibben was points race
:00:21. > :00:27.World Champion in London, didn't make the squad for Rio, but could
:00:28. > :00:33.come back to the track. Owain Doull could make a comeback, currently
:00:34. > :00:36.riding for Team Sky. It is about where they want to pursue their
:00:37. > :00:41.careers and continue to focus on the road all have another crack at the
:00:42. > :00:44.track. Everyone has different motivations and, I think for us, as
:00:45. > :00:54.track riders, the qualification periods start two years out from the
:00:55. > :00:58.major championship 's. It keeps things fresh and exciting. These
:00:59. > :01:01.guys are working really hard and there's a lot more to come from
:01:02. > :01:05.them. It is about the different pieces of the puzzle coming together
:01:06. > :01:10.once every four years at the big one at the Olympic Games. The women
:01:11. > :01:13.finished fifth in the team pursuit and didn't make it through to the
:01:14. > :01:18.bronze medal race but still a good performance.
:01:19. > :01:24.Jill caught up with the four of them Congratulations on a fine
:01:25. > :01:27.performance, a solid ride and a personal best twice here but just
:01:28. > :01:31.missing out on the medal ride. Overall how do you assess the
:01:32. > :01:36.performance? I think we can be really happy. We have done two big
:01:37. > :01:40.PBs from where we were even just two weeks ago. I think we should all be
:01:41. > :01:49.happy with that ride even though it want enough for a medal ride. And
:01:50. > :01:52.And at the tend age of 24, the most experienced. How much have you
:01:53. > :02:03.enjoyed being part of this young team? I have really enjoyed T it has
:02:04. > :02:09.been really exciting. -- enjoyed it. It has made it a lot more exciting
:02:10. > :02:12.for me. And so much room for improvement over the coming two or
:02:13. > :02:17.three years with this group as well? ? Physically and technically the
:02:18. > :02:25.level is so high already. Technically we are so good it means
:02:26. > :02:29.we can go in to improving fis cli. Ellie is only 18, probably never
:02:30. > :02:34.step a foot in the gym and so much scope for improvement even though
:02:35. > :02:38.she's at a high level. Higher than any of the current Olympic champs
:02:39. > :02:43.were at 18. We have four years to Tokyo and a brand new team that has
:02:44. > :02:46.a fifth in the worlds. Absolutely. We cannot praise you enough. Coming
:02:47. > :02:50.in and setting the two personal bests. When we saw you in Glasgow we
:02:51. > :02:54.knew this group could deliver something special. How much are you
:02:55. > :03:01.enjoy being being part of it? I really enjoyed it in demras goe and
:03:02. > :03:05.enjoyed it more here. -- and in Glasgow and enjoyed it more here to
:03:06. > :03:10.go faster we're proud. Disappointment not to get into a
:03:11. > :03:13.bronze medal but top five only just coming into your first World
:03:14. > :03:18.Championship? Straight away we are a little bit disappointed but we are
:03:19. > :03:23.all happy and like, fifth in the world, something big for such a long
:03:24. > :03:26.time And for you, it almost seems a change that we barely finish one
:03:27. > :03:29.Olympics and we are looking to the next cycle but does Tokyo feature
:03:30. > :03:35.very much in your mind at this stage? Yes, like all the team
:03:36. > :03:39.pursuits we do now is for Tokyo. We can be really happy with this and to
:03:40. > :03:45.knock another 11 seconds off maybe more and then in Tokyo aim to break
:03:46. > :03:48.another World Record How tricky was it getting the catch early in that
:03:49. > :03:52.race? I think we were planning on catching them. We thought we had a
:03:53. > :03:58.few seconds on them. It was always the plan to catch them. I think we
:03:59. > :04:04.got over them nicely and worked well as a team I have to ask Elinor
:04:05. > :04:07.Barker, you smiled when she mentioned world records, what do you
:04:08. > :04:10.think about that? Gentleman really happy with a team confident enough
:04:11. > :04:17.to say that now, I think it is a really good sign. So do I. It is
:04:18. > :04:21.amusing watching Elinor Barker adjusting from the role of the
:04:22. > :04:29.junior member to the senior member. She is doing well. She said it was
:04:30. > :04:34.fresh and exciting. She came in as an 18-year-old and spent her time
:04:35. > :04:39.working towards the team pursuit. It gets repetitive. A whole bunch of
:04:40. > :04:43.new people, she is enjoying this. At this point in an Olympic cycle, if
:04:44. > :04:47.it is becoming too tough mentally it is not where you want it to be.
:04:48. > :04:51.Anything that's fresh and exciting is good for everybody and she seems
:04:52. > :04:55.in a good place. A world on Manon Lloyd hasn't she done well to
:04:56. > :05:04.recover, she fractured her pelvis I think last April? Yes, she has had
:05:05. > :05:08.an impressive comeback, like Geraint Thomas, so the Welsh are tough,
:05:09. > :05:13.obviously (that group of girls are working with a coach called Chris
:05:14. > :05:19.Newton, one of our old coaches, he has brought them on leap and bounds.
:05:20. > :05:24.They reloicated from South Wales to Manchester and that has helped them
:05:25. > :05:28.all being in the one place, with the senior riders, I have a belief in
:05:29. > :05:32.the concept of being based in the same place in Manchester. The group
:05:33. > :05:37.has come on massively. They seem happy, which is brilliant. It seems
:05:38. > :05:41.to be, despite the negative headlines, you cannot knock them for
:05:42. > :05:44.expanding the female participation, there's more women in that set up.
:05:45. > :05:47.Yes, real opportunities and they realise it is great to encourage
:05:48. > :05:53.more people into sport but hopefully to get some talent through and medal
:05:54. > :05:57.chances in the future as well. Now a little question for you Connor has
:05:58. > :06:05.e-mailed in. He is watching keenly and wants to know - I'm a beginner
:06:06. > :06:09.track cyclist and want to take place in endurance races how can I build
:06:10. > :06:13.that without a road bike? Do you want it take this? I think diener
:06:14. > :06:17.training sessions, interval sessions, short, tough sessions can
:06:18. > :06:22.be anything from half an hour to an hour and you can get really good
:06:23. > :06:27.bang for your buck there. He could train on a track bike indoors or on
:06:28. > :06:30.some sort of static trainer and get good gains from that. It is
:06:31. > :06:33.interesting as well that the commitment you've got to have to t
:06:34. > :06:37.you can't just do there are part-time. You want to be good, you
:06:38. > :06:41.need to be riding how often a week and how many hours? Well, it's - you
:06:42. > :06:45.know, it is not about taking it too seriously too young. It is first of
:06:46. > :06:49.all important to enjoy it. You have to love doing what you do, but it is
:06:50. > :06:53.a tough sport. In the early days, the important things are to learn
:06:54. > :06:57.the skills a good riding position, a good pedalling action, these are far
:06:58. > :07:01.more important than sticking in 20, 25 hours a week on the bike and as
:07:02. > :07:06.Jo said, quality. If you are at school or have a job, it is about
:07:07. > :07:10.coming in and having half an hour or 45 minutes on your turbo trainer or
:07:11. > :07:15.going out on the bike, high qual, high intensity, it is not about
:07:16. > :07:18.doing thousands of miles a year. It is a tough sport, there is no
:07:19. > :07:21.question. And when you get to the top level, it is important to have
:07:22. > :07:25.the right support. Look at this photo, this gives you an example of
:07:26. > :07:33.how at the beginning of a sprint race you need a good old hefty push
:07:34. > :07:38.from behind Great foe toechl that is he the start of sprint time trial
:07:39. > :07:44.you get pushed up the track and have two-and-a-half laps to go before it
:07:45. > :07:52.starts. -- photo. You can see there he is marginal
:07:53. > :07:57.gains, he has launched his full wait to give Katie full support. Plenty
:07:58. > :08:02.of mums and dads will be saying you are not push ming off hard enough My
:08:03. > :08:06.dad used to push me off, he is a big gie, I got a massive shove. He was
:08:07. > :08:10.always popular for the pushing off. In terms of looking back at your
:08:11. > :08:14.career and thinking - right I'm going to switch gears from being
:08:15. > :08:19.somebody who enjoys cycling and racing various races to being - I'm
:08:20. > :08:22.going to get on the programme, on the Olympic programme, when do you
:08:23. > :08:27.know? Well, I think that's one for Jo, for me there wasn't a system in
:08:28. > :08:30.place when I was younger, there wasn't an opportunity T seems it is
:08:31. > :08:34.happening earlier and earlier, if you are 14 and 15 and have the
:08:35. > :08:38.ability, I don't know what your experiences were coming through. I
:08:39. > :08:42.was talent spotted age 15 at two around the year of the athanes

:08:47. > :08:50.There's one for each region, I was taken through the programme from day
:08:51. > :08:55.1, through the junior national squad, through to the academy and
:08:56. > :09:00.then podium. I didn't come in from a sense of enjoyment, I came in from
:09:01. > :09:06.day 1, you have raw talent, OK let's see what will happen. It proves you
:09:07. > :09:09.can make your mark quickly, look at late am having won a bronze race and
:09:10. > :09:12.he only joined the Olympic programme four years ago. Let's rejoin Simon
:09:13. > :09:24.Brotherton for this medal ceremony. COMMENTATOR: A great moment for
:09:25. > :09:33.Chris Latham as Brian Cookson the president of the UCI prepares to
:09:34. > :09:36.present the medals. Latham had a silver medal in Appledorn last year

:11:05. > :11:08.sleep in the jersey tonight. He said it was the best day of his life.
:11:09. > :11:14.Well-deserved. He took the opportunity a long way out and he
:11:15. > :11:16.really had to work for T It was a classy performance, not just
:11:17. > :11:20.tactically but also fis cli. Well-deserved World Champion. The
:11:21. > :11:28.whole team going to enjoy this one. It is a magnificent way it win a
:11:29. > :11:32.bike race, to grab it by the scruff of the neck, to be bold and brave,
:11:33. > :11:36.put it on the line and come up trumps. And that's what Adrian
:11:37. > :11:40.Teklinski did today. He thoroughly deserved that gold medal. Half a lap
:11:41. > :11:44.longer and it would have been around the neck of the German. He timed it
:11:45. > :11:50.well enough and had the legs to get over the line in first place.
:11:51. > :11:55.The gifts keep coming on the podium. Then we'll prepare ourselves to hear
:11:56. > :12:08.the Polish National Anthem. Teklinski went for it with about six
:12:09. > :12:16.laps to go and that hesitation behind was enough, more than enough.
:12:17. > :13:10.Ladies and gentlemen, the National Anthem of Poland.
:13:11. > :13:20.Best day of his life. Working for it to for all these years.
:13:21. > :13:33.The gold medal to Adrian Teklinski from Poland. Lucas Liss and then
:13:34. > :13:37.Chris Latham the bronze. CLARE BALDING: A brilliant bronze
:13:38. > :13:43.for Chris. He said coming off the track, what happened there? Well in
:13:44. > :13:49.the keirin, we know that two riders have been relegated so they will not
:13:50. > :13:53.be in the medal race. Let's like at Eilers and what he did wrong in the
:13:54. > :13:59.battle with Awang? Here, he is in third. Top To Awang in yellow in the
:14:00. > :14:05.third. And Eilers there, he flicks out. A slight flick in front. It was
:14:06. > :14:06.his own doing, he gave him a shove which impeded the progress of Awang.
:14:07. > :14:09.his own doing, he gave him a shove which impeded the progress of Awang.
:14:10. > :14:16.It was enough for the judges to say that's it. So race 2, well a replay
:14:17. > :14:19.there. And Pervis, for France, a similar position actually You will
:14:20. > :14:25.see him in third in the Dark Blue and the Czech rider who is second
:14:26. > :14:28.equal, right there, boom, sticks his head in, hits him again. You cannot
:14:29. > :14:32.do that. You can defend yourself but when you are pushing people out of
:14:33. > :14:36.the way deliberately to impede their progress it is relegation. And
:14:37. > :14:39.Pervis knows that. He bhans World Champion a couple of times and he is
:14:40. > :14:43.experienced, he should haven't done that, he was boxed in. To do it
:14:44. > :14:47.perfectly without infringing the rules. The key thing is to get out
:14:48. > :14:53.of the position before you get into it. Raise ray If he had not done
:14:54. > :14:56.that, if Pervis had not done t he would have been boxed in and it was
:14:57. > :15:01.a gamble that didn't play-off. Joe Truman, he did a brave thing, not
:15:02. > :15:06.unlike in the scratch race, which is a shorter distance, he went for it
:15:07. > :15:10.early and blew up. We'll see him in the 7th to #129 race, the B race?
:15:11. > :15:10.For him it is not a massive disappointment.
:15:11. > :15:11.the 7th to #129 race, the B race? For him it is not a massive
:15:12. > :15:21.disappointment. He was hoping to be -- 7th to #129,
:15:22. > :15:30.B race And it is not disappointing for him. For the first bite of the
:15:31. > :15:33.cherry, it is not a bad place to be. Awang benefits from the relegation
:15:34. > :15:38.of Eilers, he has a yellow card next to his name. He has a warning from a
:15:39. > :15:41.previous incident. If he does anything, even a minor mistake or
:15:42. > :15:45.infringement in the next ride, then he will be completely relegated.
:15:46. > :15:50.Chris what is happening here? They are picking their takeaway order for
:15:51. > :15:55.dinner. No they are not. What you do, it is all hi-tech now, you pick
:15:56. > :15:59.your order at the start of the keirin. You push the button and it
:16:00. > :16:04.reveals a number and whatever number between 1 and 6 it is, that's your
:16:05. > :16:12.starting order. But you notice that Glaetzer didn't press the button, he
:16:13. > :16:16.has a super cities. -- superstition, he shook his head and he wants to be
:16:17. > :16:23.the last person to pick. Or gets what is left. It is not a deal.
:16:24. > :16:33.Before the regulations changed and it was important but there is more
:16:34. > :16:40.time now, with three laps. It is a strong line-up for a B final. Joe
:16:41. > :16:44.will have his work cut out. Ye, eelers, previous World Champion and
:16:45. > :16:56.Pervis, World Record holder over 200 m, previous World Champion as well.
:16:57. > :17:01.-- Eilers. It looks like it could be the main final. Well let's join
:17:02. > :17:04.Simon Brotherton for the B final of the men's keirin.
:17:05. > :17:10.COMMENTATOR: Very much the B final that looks like the A final the
:17:11. > :17:15.riders that are out there. Eilers in the middle of your picture in the
:17:16. > :17:19.white kit of Germany. The depending World Champion from London. Pervis
:17:20. > :17:24.has twice won this world title as well in recent years. Lots of
:17:25. > :17:28.experience there. Dawkins a multiple World Champion including here, as is
:17:29. > :17:34.Sam Webster. Two riders from New Zealand in this minor final and
:17:35. > :17:35.Vynokurov from Ukraine, I think has got his work
:17:36. > :17:43.OUT in this one. -- work cut out in this
:17:44. > :17:50.one. Well Truman, he is out for experience. The classiest line-up,
:17:51. > :18:00.you are likely to see in this event. The fact it is the minor final...
:18:01. > :18:02.And Pervis kicking himself for not getting out of that position to
:18:03. > :18:07.developed because the form is there and I think he rode a measured race
:18:08. > :18:10.physically. But the form is there. The riders who have been around a
:18:11. > :18:15.while are struggling with the way the rules have got tighter and
:18:16. > :18:21.tighter. It started out as very much a contact sport the keirin and it
:18:22. > :18:24.has been sanitised year after year Certainly very interesting but
:18:25. > :18:32.perhaps not - well certainly not as aggressive as it used to be. Here we
:18:33. > :18:36.go. They latch on to the back of the little derny bike and Eddie Dawkins
:18:37. > :18:45.from New Zealand who drew number 1, so he will go in behind the bike and
:18:46. > :18:57.right behind him in the white is Eilers from Germa the Ukrainian and
:18:58. > :19:01.Sam Webster at the back there. It is the final that most riders, of
:19:02. > :19:04.course don't want to be in but it is a very useful exercise for somebody
:19:05. > :19:09.like Joe Truman. It would have been interesting when they changed, it
:19:10. > :19:13.clean up where the bike comes out, two-and-a-half laps, you heard Sir
:19:14. > :19:17.Chris talking about a moment ago they moved it to three laps which
:19:18. > :19:20.changes the game completely and almost makes the motor bike
:19:21. > :19:25.redundant now because they are so far away from the finish when it
:19:26. > :19:29.comes out. Imagine if they had aide taken it to two, suddenly even
:19:30. > :19:33.though you have reduced the speed that would've made it interesting. I
:19:34. > :19:38.like the sound of that. Well, they are about to get under way and oh,
:19:39. > :19:43.an interesting one there by Dawkins. Very keen to get this under way. A
:19:44. > :19:47.big gap behind him. He was chomping at the bit there Dawkins to get
:19:48. > :19:56.going when that bike disappeared off the track. Eilers in second. A big
:19:57. > :20:00.gap to him, Vynokurov, and Eilers and then Truman. If anybody starts
:20:01. > :20:05.to come around Eilers he will close up but what a lead out by Dawkins
:20:06. > :20:09.for Eilers. And now Eilers powered past Dawkins. Sweeps past him.
:20:10. > :20:13.Pervis in the Navy blue of France going around the outside. Vynokurov
:20:14. > :20:18.with a good ride. Truman trying to sneak in on the outside and he is
:20:19. > :20:27.going to get second. A good ride there by Joe Truman. Excellent stuff
:20:28. > :20:32.in this minor final. Taken by last year's World Champion, Eilers from
:20:33. > :20:34.Germany but in an excellent high-quality field, Joe Truman for
:20:35. > :20:40.Great Britain coming over the line in second. He made the most of that
:20:41. > :20:45.in the most esteemed of company, didn't he? Eilers just drifting
:20:46. > :20:48.outside of the sprinter's line, all the way around there. The sprint
:20:49. > :20:55.rules do normally apply to the keirin. He didn't impede anybody's
:20:56. > :20:59.progress. He was just nudging outside, seemed as high as possible
:21:00. > :21:04.to force the others come as long a way around as he possibly could. But
:21:05. > :21:16.what an armchair ride given by due kins. Dawkins. There is the official
:21:17. > :21:20.result of the minor keirin final. And Dawkins who led for so long
:21:21. > :21:38.swept away on the final lap. Here we go with the final itself.
:21:39. > :21:46.A couple of riders in there who initially weren't in the final but
:21:47. > :21:52.are in via the relegation of two big-name riders in Pervis and
:21:53. > :21:58.Eilers. Glaetzer and Porter riders on form. Matthew Glaetzer the
:21:59. > :22:03.Commonwealth champion, World Sprint silver medallist last year in
:22:04. > :22:07.London, Babek the European keirin champion, Awang Olympic bronze
:22:08. > :22:13.medallist in this event in London. Puerta a silver medallist in the
:22:14. > :22:18.keirin in the World Champions when he was held in Colombia three years
:22:19. > :22:23.ago. Kelemen of the Czech Republic will be the outsider. His
:22:24. > :22:29.best-placing in a major world or Olympic champion is tenth in London
:22:30. > :22:33.Olympic glams. Jurczyk, the 21-year-old of Germany, seventh in
:22:34. > :22:38.the European Champions last year, but doesn't have background in terms
:22:39. > :22:43.of results in this particular discipline.
:22:44. > :22:55.There is Awang. Always the showman. Can't put a foot wrong here. Already
:22:56. > :23:01.one warning to his name. He has the look of a boxer waiting it walk
:23:02. > :23:09.Glaetzer must be sensing an opportunity. -- -- waiting to walk
:23:10. > :23:23.out and do the ring walk. ! The bike Sunday way. -- bike is
:23:24. > :23:24.under way. He must be strategising. Puerta there, break from the Czech
:23:25. > :23:36.Republic. Well, not happy there. Not sure what
:23:37. > :23:40.the problem was, but possibly technical. Just didn't get the
:23:41. > :23:44.signal to go, so they are allowed to roll around a lap while they work it
:23:45. > :23:49.out. The pre-race tension dissipates into the air for a moment or two and
:23:50. > :23:53.the riders will have to go through it all again. Chris, does it make
:23:54. > :23:58.much difference if you have two riders from the same country in a
:23:59. > :24:04.six-man field in a race like this? Well not wishing to sit on the fence
:24:05. > :24:06.it can work for and against you, you can overcomplicated an already
:24:07. > :24:09.dynamic situation by trying to use that strength and depth. What would
:24:10. > :24:13.normally happen one of the riders would go to the front and the other
:24:14. > :24:18.would leave a GP behind, a bit like we saw in the previous around. -- a
:24:19. > :24:21.gap behind. And give you an opportunity but they are not
:24:22. > :24:27.supposed to work together at all. If it is even slightly obvious the
:24:28. > :24:31.commissures would come down on you. There looks like there is some
:24:32. > :24:33.technical issue that they are trying to sort out as the riders roll
:24:34. > :24:54.around the bottom of the track. The riders composing themselves. I
:24:55. > :25:03.hope he's got enough charge in that motor bike. They used to sound like
:25:04. > :25:08.they were firing up a lawnmower, smoke blurting out the back of the
:25:09. > :25:14.bike. I think it is a timing strip issue, by the look of it.
:25:15. > :25:25.Let's hope it is sorted rather more quickly than the issues we had in
:25:26. > :25:28.the Olympic keirin final in Rio. Important for the riders here it
:25:29. > :25:32.stay calm and ignore everything going on around them. Not something
:25:33. > :25:38.they can influence but I'm sure than doesn't help the nerves any for some
:25:39. > :25:43.of them. Well that's the German rider, Jurczyk. He is not the one we
:25:44. > :25:46.were expecting to see in this World Championship final as the attention
:25:47. > :25:50.and spotlight turns on the officious here in the hope they are able to
:25:51. > :25:56.get a move on and sort this out, so we can get than final under way as
:25:57. > :26:03.quickly as possible. There is break from the Czech Republic, the
:26:04. > :26:12.European champion in this event. Keeping his legs nice and loose.
:26:13. > :26:22.A problem they have not managed to solve yet, the derny bike conserving
:26:23. > :26:26.its energy. A quick look at the medal standings. Good so far for
:26:27. > :26:30.Australia. Well spread around, though, which is always good to see.
:26:31. > :26:37.There is no country dominating at the moment. Four - well a lot of
:26:38. > :26:44.countries already got themselves a gold medal. Great Britain, the two
:26:45. > :26:49.medals, Chris Latham we saw a few minutes ago, in the scratch, adding
:26:50. > :26:52.to Elinor Barker's silver in the women's scratch race 24 hours ago
:26:53. > :26:57.when she led on the final lap and was just pipped on the line by the
:26:58. > :27:00.Italian rider. And we will be able to get this race under way any
:27:01. > :27:24.moment now. There is Matthew Glaetzer from Australia.
:27:25. > :27:33.Can Awang take advantage of this preprevious and opportunity? It is
:27:34. > :27:38.possibly the most exciting rider to watch for entertainment. Not fis
:27:39. > :27:42.deli the best but thinks the fastest -- not physically always the best.
:27:43. > :27:47.Somehow he found himself into the final. If anyone leaves the smallest
:27:48. > :27:51.of gaps, he will be in it like a flash. Here comes the motor bike and
:27:52. > :27:57.the World Championship keirin final is just a couple of seconds away.
:27:58. > :28:04.Here we go. Well, they get themselves away as they filter into
:28:05. > :28:09.the line in the drawn order. They have to maintain - as I mention, you
:28:10. > :28:14.are not allowed to overlap the motor bike, rather, with three laps to go.
:28:15. > :28:18.That mean front wheel and front wheel, you cannot pass T equally,
:28:19. > :28:22.you cannot be too far away. Certainly when it was two-and-a-half
:28:23. > :28:25.laps, riders like to lay off to run at the motor bike and go maximum
:28:26. > :28:30.speed so they wouldn't get swamped when it spun off but they are not
:28:31. > :28:34.likely to be a further 10 m away from it. So highly-controlled for
:28:35. > :28:41.the first half of this race. And then it is all over to them. The
:28:42. > :28:47.pace slowly increasing on motor bike as the laps go by. Jurczyk from
:28:48. > :28:52.Germany on the front. A little gap back to Puerta, all in white of
:28:53. > :28:57.Colombia. In the yellow it is Awang of Malaysia. Trying to repeat the
:28:58. > :29:03.tactics of the previous round. That is a lot of room being given. The
:29:04. > :29:08.two Czech riders, Babek is the one at the back at the moment. Babek
:29:09. > :29:13.just moving further forward here as the sprint now starts. Glaetzer
:29:14. > :29:17.coming around the outside, doesn't want to get caught on the shoulders,
:29:18. > :29:21.going early to get into position. He will be happy to have someone in
:29:22. > :29:26.front but equally quite keen to stay out of trouble waning it up. He has
:29:27. > :29:31.the form. A little bit of bumping there about a quarter of a lap ago,
:29:32. > :29:34.involving Babek and Puerta Awithin trying to go around the outside,
:29:35. > :29:39.Glaetzer is boxed in on the inside. Has he the pace to come back, Awang
:29:40. > :29:43.fancies up and opening up now for the Malaysian rider. The crowd are
:29:44. > :29:48.on their feet. Awang has won T he pulls a wheelie over the line. What
:29:49. > :29:51.a ride.s' won that in style. Awang is the World Champion. Superb
:29:52. > :30:03.sprinting from the Malaysian. Glaetzer he blew them all away with
:30:04. > :30:11.his legs. He didn't just win it, he wiped the floor with them. Glaetzer
:30:12. > :30:16.would have been a favourite. Puerta of Colombia taking silver. Babek of
:30:17. > :30:23.the Czech republic bronze. What a moment for Malaysians cycling and
:30:24. > :30:27.for Awang. The medals continue to be spread widely around the nations.
:30:28. > :30:35.Great for the health of track cycling. What a ride. I would go as
:30:36. > :30:39.far as to say, despite his is inexperienced, he takes the title.
:30:40. > :30:45.Twice finishing with a silver medal at the World Championships. In 2010,
:30:46. > :30:53.in this event, and at the match sprint in 2009. As I mentioned at
:30:54. > :31:00.the start of the race, he flew away like being fired from a gun from the
:31:01. > :31:05.pack. In the last lap, when they are going at full speed. Down the back
:31:06. > :31:10.straight, out of the saddle, quite something in this race. But he
:31:11. > :31:17.sensed, I can do it, I believe I have the opportunity, and he found
:31:18. > :31:22.another gear. Look at this. Even has the time to think about a flamboyant
:31:23. > :31:27.move for some cameras. That will be on the front pages tomorrow, I'm
:31:28. > :31:34.sure. That's how you win with style. A top-class rider, been around for a
:31:35. > :31:40.long time. Deservedly winning. Surprised by that one. An excellent
:31:41. > :31:46.tactician, but physically, superb. It was a big deal when he won bronze
:31:47. > :31:55.at the Olympic Games in London. Now he has topped the lot. Here is the
:31:56. > :32:01.riders IVU. -- the Czech riders left trailing in the wake. We expected
:32:02. > :32:09.Puerta to arrive, but that was the camera on the back of Awang's bike.
:32:10. > :32:12.He came around a long way, by the time they had the final bend he was
:32:13. > :32:18.already free and clear, ready to celebrate. He's won a lot of races
:32:19. > :32:22.in his career, but I don't imagine he has won many keirin races with a
:32:23. > :32:28.gap as large as that one. What a time to do it. And the fact that he
:32:29. > :32:32.is World Champion just starts to sink in. The celebrations begin. As
:32:33. > :32:42.is CLARE BALDING: Huge celebration not
:32:43. > :32:47.just in Malaysia and Hong Kong, but here in the studio. Chris Hoy, you
:32:48. > :32:51.are thrilled for him. He is such a popular guy, and he has been working
:32:52. > :32:55.so hard for so many years, it is always silver and bronze, there or
:32:56. > :32:59.thereabouts, and he means so much to Malaysia. He is the biggest sports
:33:00. > :33:06.star in Malaysia. When he got the bronze medal in London, he thought
:33:07. > :33:11.that was the pinnacle of his career. It's great to see, as a neutral, you
:33:12. > :33:18.want a Brit to win, but this is great for the sport. You said he was
:33:19. > :33:22.in trouble. He is in trouble here. The old Awang, he would have gone up
:33:23. > :33:32.the inside and cause mayhem. But he was patient. He found the gap,
:33:33. > :33:39.Puerta faded here. Awang, the kick out of the saddle, half a lap to go,
:33:40. > :33:46.phenomenal. He smoked them. It shows you come you don't have two be a
:33:47. > :33:49.great big, powerful nation with millions invested in your setup, you
:33:50. > :33:56.can do it as a smaller nation. There are very little difference between
:33:57. > :34:00.them. It is about the training, it is about your approach, the people
:34:01. > :34:04.around you supporting you. He has a great, small group, John Beasley,
:34:05. > :34:11.who is Australian, Scott Gardner, he used to be part of the British
:34:12. > :34:15.setup. So many people will be delighted for him. It is a great
:34:16. > :34:20.result. Great for the sport, too. Have you ever pulled a wheelie in
:34:21. > :34:26.victory? He pulls a wheelie every race, even in close finishes. If you
:34:27. > :34:31.lift your bike slightly, you go backwards. I don't know why he does
:34:32. > :34:35.it. It is something he can't help doing. It was more of a celebratory
:34:36. > :34:39.wheelie than a lunch for the line. If you were coaching, you would iron
:34:40. > :34:49.that out? Definitely. But the fans loved it. I was racing him, he
:34:50. > :34:55.pulled a wheelie, he knocked into me and we almost crashed. It is a bit
:34:56. > :35:02.of a trademark for him now. We can hear some of the reaction of Awang.
:35:03. > :35:07.Let's go back. I have been trying for ten years, for ten years, to get
:35:08. > :35:13.a world title. To get the rainbow jersey, I came and lost twice,
:35:14. > :35:22.silver twice, but I kept trying. Finally after ten years, it belongs
:35:23. > :35:33.to me. I am the keirin King, temp won! -- woo! It is perseverance. If
:35:34. > :35:42.you think about 2010 or 2011, when he crashed, people thought it was
:35:43. > :35:46.the end of his career. He is the epitome of perseverance, and never
:35:47. > :35:50.giving up. Again, that underdog, the small guy, not the biggest or most
:35:51. > :35:54.powerful athlete out there, but years very smart. Clearly, today, it
:35:55. > :35:59.was the perfect Dave for him. They are running late in Hong Kong, but
:36:00. > :36:04.because everyone is loving it so much, we will bring you the bronze
:36:05. > :36:10.and gold race in the women's team put to -- team pursuit. Lee of Hong
:36:11. > :36:16.Kong got through to the semifinal race tomorrow. Another example of a
:36:17. > :36:24.small are nation doing well with how many riders? I'm not sure, but she
:36:25. > :36:29.has been on the stage for a number of years now. For her, a home World
:36:30. > :36:32.Championships is huge. It is interesting with a home World
:36:33. > :36:36.Championships, if you so much as get out of the saddle, the crowd go
:36:37. > :36:40.wild. She might lose the element of surprise when coming from behind,
:36:41. > :36:45.but overall, she will lap up the home crowd and go for the gold
:36:46. > :36:50.medal. We are just hearing there is a problem with the starting gate, so
:36:51. > :36:55.the finals for the women's team pursuit are being delayed. They have
:36:56. > :37:00.had a fair few issues out there. Before the keirin, it is tradition
:37:01. > :37:04.the keirin overruns. More drama. But those sort of delays and technical
:37:05. > :37:09.difficulties as riders, how much does that upset your preparation?
:37:10. > :37:15.You plan to the second when you are racing, but you have to be ready in
:37:16. > :37:19.case of a problem. Sometimes in the team sprint, if you are on the start
:37:20. > :37:29.gate and there is a problem, I like the feeling of getting 2-3 seconds
:37:30. > :37:33.effort, and that can help. But the more focused you are and more
:37:34. > :37:37.disciplined you are, the less it affects you. But some will be
:37:38. > :37:42.affected by a ten minute delay before competing. Were you good at
:37:43. > :37:48.dealing with it. With the right number of minutes starting the bike
:37:49. > :37:53.race, you have to be flexible. I had a race at the European Championships
:37:54. > :37:58.once in 2011, we were in the home straight, no problem with our gate,
:37:59. > :38:02.but the back gate was releasing the rider. We had three starting
:38:03. > :38:06.attempts. Every time, the back straight gates didn't open. We had
:38:07. > :38:11.three activation efforts from the start. By the time we raced and they
:38:12. > :38:17.sorted the gate out, it was half an hour after the warm up, which is a
:38:18. > :38:29.long time to get cold, but in general, you need to be flexible.
:38:30. > :38:37.but real life is different. You have always got to be flexible in your
:38:38. > :38:42.mind. Cameron Meyer came back into the Australian track team from the
:38:43. > :38:46.road and was part of the men's team pursuit that took gold later this
:38:47. > :38:51.afternoon. After that, he spoke to us.
:38:52. > :38:58.That is rainbow jersey number seven on the track here. Just as special
:38:59. > :39:03.as all the others. Been a long time between drink 's. It was 2012 my
:39:04. > :39:10.last one, but seven years ago since doing the team pursuit. To start my
:39:11. > :39:14.World Championship, back in quest for more success before Tokyo. So it
:39:15. > :39:17.was really good. It is doing a Wiggins, is that the
:39:18. > :39:22.idea to come back off the road and have a tilt at the medal in Tokyo?
:39:23. > :39:26.It is a bit like that. I have always looked up to Brad, how he has
:39:27. > :39:30.managed track and road and the success he has had. Winning a gold
:39:31. > :39:37.medal is something I hope to do in Tokyo. This is a great start towards
:39:38. > :39:45.that. Some fantastic times as well. How pleased is the group with the
:39:46. > :39:51.times you have set here? We use six guys and definitely be oldest in the
:39:52. > :39:57.team, they are all 20. To write those times in a post a link it --
:39:58. > :40:02.post-Olympic year, hopefully there is more to come, but it was a
:40:03. > :40:11.special ride. And a really strong Australian team here, you look as if
:40:12. > :40:16.you have a lot of depth. I love stepping back and having a young,
:40:17. > :40:20.enthusiastic group. We have strength across all the disciplines. We
:40:21. > :40:23.started the competition well. Hopefully we can build towards the
:40:24. > :40:27.Commonwealth Games in our own country. Onwards and upwards, and
:40:28. > :40:31.Tokyo is where we would like to get and improve on the success that we
:40:32. > :40:36.haven't quite had in the last two Olympics.
:40:37. > :40:44.We look forward to that. Thank you. STUDIO: Not often you hear
:40:45. > :40:47.Australian athletes saying they underperform. The delays in Hong
:40:48. > :40:52.Kong means we don't know what time the women's pursuit final will
:40:53. > :41:00.start, so that will be on the red button. In the meantime, we will
:41:01. > :41:05.hear from Joe Truman in the B final of the keirin.
:41:06. > :41:10.You must be really pleased. It was a pretty stacked final. World Olympic
:41:11. > :41:12.champions, sorry, World Champion, living finalists, and I am happy to
:41:13. > :41:20.mix it with those guys. Absolutely. The first round, you
:41:21. > :41:24.road so well. You went brave in the second round and nearly got away
:41:25. > :41:30.with it. I am not one to sit in and go for the gaps, but it is another
:41:31. > :41:34.step up from junior. I have discovered I can't boss every race
:41:35. > :41:42.or get on the front. I have to find sneaky ways to get through. It seems
:41:43. > :41:47.to work. It did, great handling. It felt good.
:41:48. > :41:50.It is all about development and learning. This is a great
:41:51. > :41:55.environment against the best in the business.
:41:56. > :42:01.Another level up from the World Cups, a whole other level. So much
:42:02. > :42:05.time to think. I feel like I have less string from the other guys, but
:42:06. > :42:13.that will come and I can mix it at the finals. Mixing it up a world
:42:14. > :42:20.stage. I appreciate the fact I can represent my country. I didn't get
:42:21. > :42:26.to go to the junior worlds when I was 18, so I am happy to be here.
:42:27. > :42:29.And already perhaps with Tokyo in your sights? Of course, the last
:42:30. > :42:33.couple of years, it has been in my site as well. Everything we do is
:42:34. > :42:37.building towards that. Well done, thank you very much.
:42:38. > :42:45.Cheers. STUDIO: What has been your highlight today? Chris Latham in the
:42:46. > :42:49.scratch race. We could just see the Polish Rider take the fantastic win,
:42:50. > :42:55.but over the moon for Chris to take bronze. He is back in action on
:42:56. > :43:02.Saturday in the Omnium. The scratch race is in the Omnium, so it bodes
:43:03. > :43:05.well for him. What about you? Awang in the keirin, that was phenomenal.
:43:06. > :43:08.An emotional moment for him and his country. I look forward to seeing
:43:09. > :43:13.him on the podium with the national anthem, I haven't heard the
:43:14. > :43:17.Malaysian national anthem before. That will be on the red button as
:43:18. > :43:23.well. Tomorrow, the men's points race, Mark Stewart. We have Katie
:43:24. > :43:28.Archibald, Andy Tennant and Matt Bostock, and in the women's sprint,
:43:29. > :43:32.as you saw, it could be a Hong Kong home finalist in that with Lee. The
:43:33. > :43:34.women's team pursuit finals will be on the red button. We will see you
:43:35. > :43:38.again tomorrow afternoon.
