0:00:34 > 0:00:38The Netherlands is a nation of cyclist, they love their bike racing

0:00:38 > 0:00:42here, and this week, Apeldoorn welcomes the best in the business

0:00:42 > 0:00:44for the track cycling World Championship, it also sees the

0:00:44 > 0:00:51return of a couple who know a thing or two about winning.

0:00:55 > 0:01:00Gold for Great Britain. They've smashed the world record. Laura

0:01:00 > 0:01:06Trott did it in style. Come back much quicker than I hoped

0:01:06 > 0:01:12for. You want to win every race you go for.Jason Kenny has this and he

0:01:12 > 0:01:16wins the gold medal.Sport is about performance. If you are fast

0:01:16 > 0:01:27enough... I do everything I can when it matters.Laura Trott is Britain

0:01:27 > 0:01:31east most successful female Olympian of all time. It is is a golden

0:01:31 > 0:01:34hat-trick in Rio, if ha-ha is not worth a standing ovation, I don't

0:01:34 > 0:01:41know what is. Their hundred is a boost to the

0:01:41 > 0:01:44squad. We will see them in action shortly. Here is what is coming up

0:01:44 > 0:01:48as we bring you the best of the opening three days of competition.

0:01:48 > 0:01:52It is Jason Kenny who will make his come back first in the men's team

0:01:52 > 0:02:05sprint. Sprint. Katy Marchant goes for Britain. High hopes of medals in

0:02:05 > 0:02:11the men and the women, Katie Archibald won a dramatic Omnium

0:02:11 > 0:02:16gold. Gold. And Charlie Tanfield stunned the cycling world with one

0:02:16 > 0:02:19of the fastest individual pursuit teems at the track World Cup in

0:02:19 > 0:02:22January. Can he step up to the World

0:02:22 > 0:02:26Championship podium. Plus plenty more besides.

0:02:26 > 0:02:30I am pleased to say we have moved indoors, it has been a bitterly cold

0:02:30 > 0:02:33week here though we have had not of the snow you have experienced at

0:02:33 > 0:02:38home. Things are heating up in the velodrome. Chris Boardman and Sir

0:02:38 > 0:02:42Chris Hoy are with me. I will start with you Chris, hoy. In Apeldoorn

0:02:42 > 0:02:50you were part of that team in 2011 when the words were last here, how

0:02:50 > 0:02:54is it to be back.It is great to be back, the memories aren't so good.

0:02:54 > 0:02:58It wasn't great for me personally, but, yes, it was part of that

0:02:58 > 0:03:02journey towards London, but it is great to be back here, the home fan,

0:03:02 > 0:03:05they are so passionate about their sport in general but cycling fan,

0:03:05 > 0:03:11they are up for it. I think the team is looking good. They have had good

0:03:11 > 0:03:15success, the Dutch, the home team have a lot to cheer for.Chris, here

0:03:15 > 0:03:21we are two years from Tokyo. The World Champions are keeping eye on

0:03:21 > 0:03:24the bigger picture, qualification doesn't start until later this year,

0:03:24 > 0:03:28how important is it for the British team to put down a good performance

0:03:28 > 0:03:34here?It is about Olympic games and we hear it, it is all about the

0:03:34 > 0:03:40Olympic Games. Now the squads are so big, the competition for places is

0:03:40 > 0:03:43fierce, and World Championships is another opportunity to show that you

0:03:43 > 0:03:47are the person that you should be backing, going towards that Olympic

0:03:47 > 0:03:51game, so it is important for all sorts of reasons, not least because

0:03:51 > 0:03:56it is a rainbow jersey.Which you picked up several in the course of

0:03:56 > 0:04:01your career. Career. Two years before Rio, the British men's team

0:04:01 > 0:04:05came home with no medals at all. Do you think the British team are in a

0:04:05 > 0:04:10better place here?Time will tell. Looking at results in the World

0:04:10 > 0:04:15Series and the training times the team are looking stronger, it is

0:04:15 > 0:04:19hard to tell. The women's endurance squad are always strong, regardless

0:04:19 > 0:04:23of their time in the four year cycle, but it seems as though there

0:04:23 > 0:04:28is a number of nations, Australia, France, Germany and the UK and you

0:04:28 > 0:04:33have Holland, New Zealand, a number of other individuals, so there is a

0:04:33 > 0:04:37greater spread in terms of to pen shall medal winners. It will be a

0:04:37 > 0:04:41fantastic few days of action. To get under way it is the men's team

0:04:41 > 0:04:48sprint. For Great Britain it features Jason Kenny stepping out of

0:04:48 > 0:04:49retirement and back on to the

0:04:49 > 0:04:51features Jason Kenny stepping out of retirement and back on to the track.

0:04:51 > 0:04:57Jason Kenny has it. What a ride? A gold hat-trick for Jason Kenny.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00Jason Kenny has it. What a ride? A gold hat-trick for Jason Kenny.

0:05:00 > 0:05:05Here we are, you have obviously contemplated retirement,Pretty much

0:05:05 > 0:05:09had enough and I did stop and I did disappear for a good year,

0:05:09 > 0:05:13fortunately in the year I had off, I didn't find anything else to do so I

0:05:13 > 0:05:19came back. I decided to come back, I was going to take my time and build

0:05:19 > 0:05:23businessman up, which is Olympic qualification, but that has gone out

0:05:23 > 0:05:28the window and here I am.Did you miss the training?Did and I didn't.

0:05:28 > 0:05:32I didn't do anything else so I had plenty of time. I was training but

0:05:32 > 0:05:37doing other stuff. I was going mountain biking or walking the dog,

0:05:37 > 0:05:41started enjoying the gym. I thought I hate the gym generally, I thought

0:05:41 > 0:05:46when I quit I wouldn't be one of those that go to the gym. I would

0:05:46 > 0:05:50rather be out and about and training outside. When I took away the

0:05:50 > 0:05:59structures I started enjoying it again.Albie's here, in terms of

0:05:59 > 0:06:02trying to be an athlete and a family at the same time, how difficult is

0:06:02 > 0:06:07that to manage?Well, on the face of it it is a disaster, I wouldn't have

0:06:07 > 0:06:12thought you would be able to train, having not slept, because we do it,

0:06:12 > 0:06:16just me and Laura, it is difficult. But it is a new thing you have to

0:06:16 > 0:06:23adapt to. Part of being an athlete is adapting to situation, you always

0:06:23 > 0:06:26seem to be training round something, that is a new thing we have to

0:06:26 > 0:06:30learn. We are just tired all the time. You have to kind of accept it.

0:06:30 > 0:06:34All that considered then, what sort of shape do you feel you are in?I

0:06:34 > 0:06:38am just trying to get in the team spirit, to be honest. I don't know.

0:06:38 > 0:06:42We will have to wait and see. The nationals went well. That was my

0:06:42 > 0:06:46little hit out towards the World Champions, but we have good numbers

0:06:46 > 0:06:49and strength and depth, which is a cliche, but it is true at the

0:06:49 > 0:06:55minute.Are you looking at Tokyo, are there things you want to achieve

0:06:55 > 0:07:01be before you call it a day?No, I'm making it up as I go along.

0:07:01 > 0:07:06Seriously?Yes. No, obviously we work in Olympic cycles so I have

0:07:06 > 0:07:12committed to give it a nudge. Tokyo is the ultimate goal.Jason Kenny, a

0:07:12 > 0:07:21sixth gold medal. After qualifying fourth fastest

0:07:21 > 0:07:24Great Britain brought eight Olympic Golds to their first round line up.

0:07:24 > 0:07:26Great Britain brought eight Olympic Golds to their first round line up.

0:07:26 > 0:07:31That pace saw them clock 43.434 seconds to beat New Zealand and make

0:07:31 > 0:07:36it into the gold medal ride off with the second quickest time. We will

0:07:36 > 0:07:39see that shortly. First here is Simon Brotherton with Chris Boardman

0:07:39 > 0:07:48for the bronze medal race. You can see he is straining at the

0:07:48 > 0:07:52leash, desperate to get away. Beautifully timed by both teams

0:07:52 > 0:07:58here. Both of them want it. Come out of this with a medal. And there is

0:07:58 > 0:08:01nothing in it, we are into the hundredth of a second at this early

0:08:01 > 0:08:07stage.Nip and tuck all the way. France just, just ahead. It is

0:08:07 > 0:08:16again, a 17.6 though.Less then than a tenth.The Russians leading on lap

0:08:16 > 0:08:21two. But the slenderest of margins it is Russia who lead the way, with

0:08:21 > 0:08:26less than a lap to go. It is France, then Russia. Who will take it on the

0:08:26 > 0:08:34line. Blink of an eye stuff and it is the French who get it.

0:08:34 > 0:08:4143.373. There was absolutely nothing in it from start to finish. You

0:08:41 > 0:08:46could see the last half a lap is where you really dug deep and made

0:08:46 > 0:08:55that difference. 23 years this event has been held.

0:08:55 > 0:09:00Britain have won it twice. Seven silvers. 13 medals in all but only

0:09:00 > 0:09:05World Champions twice. Let us see if they can get the big

0:09:05 > 0:09:11one this time round. Here we go then. Then. Getting ready for this

0:09:11 > 0:09:21final.

0:09:21 > 0:09:28Great Britain have made a change. Jack Carlin will lead off as he has

0:09:28 > 0:09:33done, Ryan Owens is coming in to replace Phil Hynds. Jason Kenny is

0:09:33 > 0:09:38man three. There he is, on his return to top level competition.

0:09:38 > 0:09:44This is where he is used to being, in the final, vying for gold. Owens

0:09:44 > 0:09:50has a big responsibility here. Carlin started well in both rounds

0:09:50 > 0:09:54so far, can he do it one more time? The Dutch have looked real will I

0:09:54 > 0:09:59strong.17.3 is what we are looking for. He has posted two of those so

0:09:59 > 0:10:07far. Dealing with the pressure, suburbly. Delivering on demand.

0:10:15 > 0:10:22Good clean start from Carlin and the Dutchman, three laps to decide the

0:10:22 > 0:10:26World Championship in the men's team sprint. They look good at the

0:10:26 > 0:10:30moment, they are trailing, that is for sure but both teams got off

0:10:30 > 0:10:33well.What a first lap for the Dutch. Only a tenth of a second in

0:10:33 > 0:10:37it. Great Britain are still involved. 17.1 for Carlin on that

0:10:37 > 0:10:45first lap. That is stunning stuff. Owens here, Jason Kenny has a bit to

0:10:45 > 0:10:49do here. Two tenths of a second to make up. It is Hoogland against

0:10:49 > 0:10:53Kenny, what has Kenny got in his legs? It is a big ask. Up towards

0:10:53 > 0:10:59the line. Netherlands take it. 42.727. Great Britain finish with

0:10:59 > 0:11:03the silver medal here, in this final of the opening day of competition.

0:11:03 > 0:11:08I think they have to be pleased with that. That was one of the fastest

0:11:08 > 0:11:15opening laps I have ever seen by a British rider. 17 dead by the team

0:11:15 > 0:11:19from the Netherlands. I don't think I have seen that before. These are

0:11:19 > 0:11:25incredible times. It is the hardest spot in a team to get right is man

0:11:25 > 0:11:29one, you can build behind that, they have to be pleased with that ride.

0:11:29 > 0:11:35That was a huge effort, a great team performance, Jack, you have had a

0:11:35 > 0:11:39busy workload, what a fantastic way to finish off. That must have been a

0:11:39 > 0:11:45personal best. A remarkable time in the opening lap.It wasn't a

0:11:45 > 0:11:51personal best but overall the team performed well. Obviously,

0:11:51 > 0:11:55disappointed a little, there was no way we were going to beat that side.

0:11:55 > 0:11:59They were stronger than we have ever seen them before, so they deserved

0:11:59 > 0:12:03the win for sure. When you lock at how you have been

0:12:03 > 0:12:08able to step into this man one role, you must be really really

0:12:08 > 0:12:13encouraged, going forward?I think it is hard, because there is such a,

0:12:13 > 0:12:17there is six riders now, so it is all to play for for the position,

0:12:17 > 0:12:24but at the moment, yes, it is nice to do the sport and hopefully keep

0:12:24 > 0:12:28it up.Sensational today. Just to be part of this team and to come here

0:12:28 > 0:12:32end get into a final like this, it is a long time since Great Britain

0:12:32 > 0:12:36contested a gold medal in a team sprint?Yes, last year we had a good

0:12:36 > 0:12:42run-in the World Cups and our first couple of races we had gold and we

0:12:42 > 0:12:47went to the words last year with perhaps unrealistically high

0:12:47 > 0:12:50expectation, when you come here the competition reaches a new level. You

0:12:50 > 0:12:55saw the Dutch team was unbelievable. You rarely see anyone go that quick

0:12:55 > 0:12:59outside of the Olympics, so we will be happy with that performance. We

0:12:59 > 0:13:04would like to have come closer and channel them, but to finish on our

0:13:04 > 0:13:09fastest time of the day, we can be proud of that.Have a quick word

0:13:09 > 0:13:13with man three, great to see you back at the track Jason, you have

0:13:13 > 0:13:19shown you are as hungry as ever for it.Yes, we are well up for that. It

0:13:19 > 0:13:22is a good team. So join with the team and get stuck in, this is good

0:13:22 > 0:13:30to be art the sharp end.We don't often see a men's sprint team

0:13:30 > 0:13:35contesting that, you normally keep that for Olympic years.2011 was the

0:13:35 > 0:13:40last one I think. It is nice to be back at the thick end, nice to use

0:13:40 > 0:13:44all the team member, it was a team effort to get the final. It was a

0:13:44 > 0:13:49shame, obviously we didn't bring home the gold but in a way I am glad

0:13:49 > 0:13:53we got through, I think I was the Weakest Link. I would have been

0:13:53 > 0:13:58getting the blame! Like I say, the main thing is we are at the sharp

0:13:58 > 0:14:01end, we will push hard and try and improve next year.A silver medal

0:14:01 > 0:14:07for Great Britain. A silver medal for Jason Kenny, what do you make of

0:14:07 > 0:14:10his coming out of retirementWe are a bit shocked. Jason is probably the

0:14:10 > 0:14:15most shocked.

0:14:15 > 0:14:20He only got backing to it a matter of weeks ago. He did a little bit of

0:14:20 > 0:14:24Jim, had some fitness, but to come back in, and also he has changed

0:14:24 > 0:14:29from man two to man three, it is an outstanding performance and he is

0:14:29 > 0:14:34being a bit hard on himself, saying he led the team down but I think it

0:14:34 > 0:14:40was an outstanding performance from all of them.It is 2005 since Great

0:14:40 > 0:14:43Britain won the gold medal at world Championships. Last time they were

0:14:43 > 0:14:48in the final was 2009. We tend to not be very good in this event

0:14:48 > 0:14:52between Olympic years. We get it right at the Olympics but while

0:14:52 > 0:14:56championships are still world Championships. So, to make the gold

0:14:56 > 0:15:00medal final, I think, was a fantastic result and the guys will

0:15:00 > 0:15:04be happy. There is strength and depth, and in addition those riders

0:15:04 > 0:15:11we have Callum Skinner in the make this, it is a great position to be

0:15:11 > 0:15:14in. The Dutch had no weaklings at all but the British guys will be

0:15:14 > 0:15:18very happy with that. What you make of the two young sprinters grafted

0:15:18 > 0:15:27into this team?Well, Jack Carlin, he is Scottish, amazing, he is doing

0:15:27 > 0:15:31the very specialised role, the first lap. And dealing with the pressure,

0:15:31 > 0:15:35too, stepping in at this level, performing, he never flinches and

0:15:35 > 0:15:39I've been very impressed with him. Ryan Owens could have made the

0:15:39 > 0:15:44Olympic team, he is the reserve rider, he went to the pics, posted

0:15:44 > 0:15:51some impressive times in training. He dealt with the disappointment of

0:15:51 > 0:15:57not being in the Rio team. He has come here and developed again.

0:15:57 > 0:16:02Philip Hindes, changing to man two, so many interesting things. It is an

0:16:02 > 0:16:09adaptable and flexible team, compared to the 2008 and 2016

0:16:09 > 0:16:15Olympics, we any had two established riders, looking for the established

0:16:15 > 0:16:21bird rider. So it is nice to have too many great riders? It can be a

0:16:21 > 0:16:24problem in certain teams because you can have internal conflict and you

0:16:24 > 0:16:28can fight so hard to make the team that by the time you get to the

0:16:28 > 0:16:32Olympics, you've no energy left so the way they are dealing with it,

0:16:32 > 0:16:37the way the guys operate, they all get on, it is a nice environment and

0:16:37 > 0:16:39nice atmosphere and I think they will do very well. Having said that,

0:16:39 > 0:16:45the Dutch look very impressive, the Kiwis as well. They underperformed

0:16:45 > 0:16:49but they will come back and the Australians did not ring a team at

0:16:49 > 0:16:53all. There are other potential dangers in two years' time but, at

0:16:53 > 0:17:02the moment, we are doing very well. To the full Monty pursuit and a few

0:17:02 > 0:17:05new faces and unfamiliar one leading the charge.

0:17:05 > 0:17:10The team is looking different, in a word, but it is looking good. There

0:17:10 > 0:17:15is a couple of older guys, I guess my generation, that are not here. We

0:17:15 > 0:17:22have for a couple of new faces, Charlie Tanfield, Ethan Hayter, it

0:17:22 > 0:17:28is never easy to see team-mates not being with you to go into battle.

0:17:28 > 0:17:32But the team is looking good so it is exciting. In qualifying, veteran

0:17:32 > 0:17:42of three Olympics, Clancy was joined by Kian Emadi, Ethan Hayter and

0:17:42 > 0:17:45Charlie Tanfield. They set the fastest time of three minutes 55

0:17:45 > 0:17:49points 14 before going on to beat Germany and claiming a place in

0:17:49 > 0:17:52final. Italy faced Germany for bronze.

0:17:55 > 0:18:08Away we go. 4,000 metres to decide who is going to win a medal here.

0:18:08 > 0:18:16Both teams posted a good kilometre in the opening round so we can

0:18:16 > 0:18:19expect this to be reasonably close and it is the Germans ahead at the

0:18:19 > 0:18:26moment.The first rider getting them up to speed and doing that

0:18:26 > 0:18:31efficiently.

0:18:32 > 0:18:37efficiently.The Italians coming back already. They posted the

0:18:37 > 0:18:44fastest first day of the two teams, and steadily moved away in the

0:18:44 > 0:18:49previous round bout, right now, Germany are fighting back hard, and

0:18:49 > 0:18:55have the advantage.

0:18:55 > 0:18:58have the advantage.Lovely on-board footage, steady progress being made

0:18:58 > 0:19:07from the Germans. It is a fast first gay. -- first date, faster than the

0:19:07 > 0:19:15first round.Look at the first rider powering for Italy.I suspect he

0:19:15 > 0:19:21went finish this race. He had the face and Wadi of a man who will not

0:19:21 > 0:19:27go all the way to the finish, really driving, and he brought them closer

0:19:27 > 0:19:32but the Germans are holding their own.A very strong rider on the

0:19:32 > 0:19:42front for Italy, Ganna, the powerful youngster.Decent changes by the

0:19:42 > 0:19:49Italian four. Look at that, dead level! Nothing in it. Maybe a hair

0:19:49 > 0:19:56in front, the Italians but they have the momentum taken away from them by

0:19:56 > 0:20:02Germany. So it is nip and tuck. Every half lap is changing position.

0:20:02 > 0:20:08Italy just nudging in front here, a little a tenth of a second. This

0:20:08 > 0:20:13will be a brilliant finish between these two.Neither of them made any

0:20:13 > 0:20:16significant mistakes, not obvious what will make the difference

0:20:16 > 0:20:20between them. Shallow change from Italy, slightly, which could cause

0:20:20 > 0:20:28them a problem later on.

0:20:28 > 0:20:29them a problem later on. That was Bertazzo. The Germans are down to

0:20:29 > 0:20:37three which could be the end, so early in this race. The Italians,

0:20:37 > 0:20:43almost sprinting, and handing over to Ganna, the former individual

0:20:43 > 0:20:50pursuit champion.Half a second to the good now and moving away, the

0:20:50 > 0:20:54Italians looked to have this one clinched. Still four of them on the

0:20:54 > 0:21:00track.Italy looking good here to repeat their bronze medal of last

0:21:00 > 0:21:09year.Germany giving themselves a fine account of themselves, they

0:21:09 > 0:21:14have fought hard but the power of Italy showing through as they go

0:21:14 > 0:21:18down to three with about 40 seconds of racing remaining.Down to three

0:21:18 > 0:21:25for the last couple of laps. The rider that dropped out for Germany

0:21:25 > 0:21:34was Gross, and on the front is Lamon for the Italians. They are almost up

0:21:34 > 0:21:38to a second, the gap between the two teams, as they take the bell. 250

0:21:38 > 0:21:44metres to go for Italy, to claim the bronze medal, already halfway

0:21:44 > 0:21:49through that lap, down the back straight. A tremendous race for the

0:21:49 > 0:21:57bronze but Italy have prevailed. Italy take the bronze.

0:21:57 > 0:22:03Italy take the bronze. Germany, in the end, did not have the legs. So,

0:22:03 > 0:22:07as the Italians celebrate, there are Great Britain with Ed Clancy, so

0:22:07 > 0:22:10experienced, three times gold medallist in the Olympics, five-time

0:22:10 > 0:22:18world champion. Kian Emadi, Charlie Tanfield, and Ethan Hayter.I wonder

0:22:18 > 0:22:28where they were -- whether they were going to swap Kian Emadi and put

0:22:28 > 0:22:35down Bigham but they've stuck with the format.

0:22:37 > 0:22:40The race for gold is under way, and in a little over four minutes we

0:22:40 > 0:22:44will know whether it will be Great Britain's they'll Bertazzo whether

0:22:44 > 0:22:50Denmark will be while champions for the first time since 2009. Edward

0:22:50 > 0:22:55Clancy leads the way for Great Britain. Not a great start by the

0:22:55 > 0:22:59Danes, very ragged, having to drive of the wheel. You've got the energy

0:22:59 > 0:23:05to do it now but it is spent, and your pay a price for it later on.

0:23:05 > 0:23:09So, the British team well drilled and that discipline may pay

0:23:09 > 0:23:17dividends. They had a slow change there. A faster start by Denmark,

0:23:17 > 0:23:25half a second up already.That is a huge advantage but also a problem

0:23:25 > 0:23:30because you've spent a lot of energy to gain a three quarters of a second

0:23:30 > 0:23:38advantage in such a short space of time. Johansen peels off, Madsen

0:23:38 > 0:23:45taking over. Significantly faster than they posted in the previous

0:23:45 > 0:23:50round, by far the fastest in this competition. So, have they gone out

0:23:50 > 0:23:55to quickly? Because this is an amazing ride at this stage of the

0:23:55 > 0:24:02game.Things are going to get tough for them or will we see some

0:24:02 > 0:24:07sessional time? It is just over half a second, the gap, so Great Britain

0:24:07 > 0:24:16are not too far away. And a long way to go.And coming back nicely, half

0:24:16 > 0:24:20a second in arrears, holding very much in touch. Both teams have

0:24:20 > 0:24:25smoothed out, got into their stride. On the front, Ethan Hayter for Great

0:24:25 > 0:24:33Britain. Charlie Tanfield in behind him as we take a look at Denmark.

0:24:33 > 0:24:40Great Britain still chipping away. Not much in it now. Tanfield, if he

0:24:40 > 0:24:47does a longer term, as he has done, he will be coming through soon so

0:24:47 > 0:24:52when those long terms, round, they save two tenths of a second every

0:24:52 > 0:24:58time as the Britain's edge closer and closer to the team of Denmark.

0:24:58 > 0:25:04Denmark down to three. So that opening kilometre was so fast, they

0:25:04 > 0:25:09did a huge amount of damage. On the front, Kian Emadi for Great Britain.

0:25:09 > 0:25:18This is his big, big effort, and he is out. He drops out so Great

0:25:18 > 0:25:22Britain now down to three. But they are in the lead, it is neck and

0:25:22 > 0:25:28neck, the Danes coming back. We will get the long-term by Charlie here.

0:25:28 > 0:25:32He has been held in reserve for this one. He is ploughing away, he has

0:25:32 > 0:25:39gained them two tenths. All the time, moving away, and I think the

0:25:39 > 0:25:44title could be theirs.Britain at the bottom of the track, looking

0:25:44 > 0:25:48good, almost three quarters of a second.Struggling for the wheel,

0:25:48 > 0:25:54just about getting on after that mammoth turn.Big, big turn and it

0:25:54 > 0:25:59is balanced very finally, this final, it is tenths of a second but

0:25:59 > 0:26:03Great Britain on a knife edge whether they can hold the pace. This

0:26:03 > 0:26:08one is going to be about that. It might be a second but there is still

0:26:08 > 0:26:13time for mistakes and the line edges closer, just over 20 seconds

0:26:13 > 0:26:17remaining in this event. It'll all come down to this final lap and

0:26:17 > 0:26:22Great Britain have got an advantage, there should be enough. There should

0:26:22 > 0:26:26be one lap that will take them to the title, and here they come now

0:26:26 > 0:26:31around the banking and into the finish and gold is going to be Great

0:26:31 > 0:26:37Britain's! World champions for the first time since 2012! A golden

0:26:37 > 0:26:43ride, Edward Clancy, Charlie Tanfield, Ethan Hayter and Kian

0:26:43 > 0:26:47Emadi, Britain back on top of the podium in the men's team pursuit! We

0:26:47 > 0:26:53saw what they've got to give at the right time, the only time, in the

0:26:53 > 0:27:03final. The fastest ride by far by them in the series. What a cool

0:27:03 > 0:27:10smile. The coaches stuck with the riders, they had confidence in them

0:27:10 > 0:27:15to raise their game and that is what they did. Many congratulations,

0:27:15 > 0:27:18you've won a lot of medals but this one is special. This is a great set

0:27:18 > 0:27:29of guys.It is, cycling is about the Olympics and we always say that.

0:27:29 > 0:27:31People forget their world Championships and this is special

0:27:31 > 0:27:38moment. Thanks the Steventon putting more emphasis on the world

0:27:38 > 0:27:43Championships and we've pushed hard for this. The team is different now,

0:27:43 > 0:27:49a few fresh faces in here, and it came together last minute but it

0:27:49 > 0:27:54still feels pace and it worked out for the best. What can you tell us

0:27:54 > 0:27:59about this team, these guys who have stepped in? Kian Emadi making the

0:27:59 > 0:28:03switch and these two youngsters who forced their way into the team.Kian

0:28:03 > 0:28:11Emadi, he has come from the sprint squad, he has found his way. He is

0:28:11 > 0:28:18going to be a star man. He is making massive leaps forward at the moment,

0:28:18 > 0:28:21a really exciting prospect for the future. I said that two years ago.

0:28:21 > 0:28:28The other two, Charlie, I know his Big Brother. Just a massive engine,

0:28:28 > 0:28:32massive talent. He's come from outside the system so he's

0:28:32 > 0:28:36relatively unknown but he has been doing great things and he has been

0:28:36 > 0:28:42spotted on taken on board. Ethan Hayter, I think he is the next

0:28:42 > 0:28:47Bradley Wiggins, he's so good. He is arguably the strongest guy in the

0:28:47 > 0:28:55team. How old is he? 19?High praise indeed. Kian

0:28:55 > 0:28:57team. How old is he? 19?High praise indeed. Kian, great to see you win a

0:28:57 > 0:29:01gold medal having made that switch, well worth it now, I'm sure you'll

0:29:01 > 0:29:05agree.Definitely, that is my first world medal so I can't argue with

0:29:05 > 0:29:10that. It was great to do it with the team with a great atmosphere,

0:29:10 > 0:29:15everyone has been really pulling for this result. To get it right on the

0:29:15 > 0:29:20day and to win, it is special.A very smooth race from you. Charlie,

0:29:20 > 0:29:24we talked about this being a fairy tale but what unending!Hopefully

0:29:24 > 0:29:32not! I mean...

0:29:36 > 0:29:42When you put team KGF together, did you, did you dream about coming to a

0:29:42 > 0:29:46World Championship, wearing a rainbow jersey?No, never crossed my

0:29:46 > 0:29:51mind. The goal was to get to World Cups and try and compete with the

0:29:51 > 0:29:55best in the world, and next thing I know, I'm winning a World

0:29:55 > 0:30:01Championship. It is astonishing.How did it feel?I was nervous and

0:30:01 > 0:30:05excited but I am glad we all clicked together on the day, it all come

0:30:05 > 0:30:10together and I almost lost it on the last turn. My front wheel almost

0:30:10 > 0:30:16slipped out. I managed to turn it on the back of them, and I finished it

0:30:16 > 0:30:22off, so really happy.Very much a beginning as well as a fairy tale

0:30:22 > 0:30:28end. Ethan to hear Ed Clancy talk about you as the next Bradley

0:30:28 > 0:30:34Wiggins that was a fantastic way of introducing you to the global stage?

0:30:34 > 0:30:41It is big boots to live up to. How happy are you to be a World Champion

0:30:41 > 0:30:45here, with this team and these guys here?I am shocked, really, like, I

0:30:45 > 0:30:50didn't know, I didn't think I was going to get selected originally,

0:30:50 > 0:30:54and then, putting the work in training, and, managed to pull it on

0:30:54 > 0:30:59today.And it was a bold call by the coaches to run with the same four

0:30:59 > 0:31:03through the competition but thaw has paid off as well.Yes, I think it is

0:31:03 > 0:31:06unfortunate for some of the other riders because they are strong

0:31:06 > 0:31:11enough, the way it worked. It meant we could ride the same and be not

0:31:11 > 0:31:16fatigued.Enjoy the moment, well done everybody. Thank you very much.

0:31:16 > 0:31:21So a great performance from the team pursuit. And it is an all new line

0:31:21 > 0:31:25up, think it just shows the strength and depth in the men's endurance

0:31:25 > 0:31:30team at the moment.Raise raise, yes outstanding,

0:31:30 > 0:31:31team at the moment.Raise raise, yes outstanding, to see -- yes

0:31:31 > 0:31:35outstanding, they can only go quicker than this, and great to see

0:31:35 > 0:31:41Ed back in team. He must be the most successful team pursuit rider of all

0:31:41 > 0:31:50times and to see him come back with this renewed enthusiasm.

0:31:52 > 0:31:55this renewed enthusiasm. To see him win rainbow jersey and the new

0:31:55 > 0:31:59riders, which, it is so exciting, I think to see what can happen in the

0:31:59 > 0:32:02next two years and of course, a number of others in the mix that are

0:32:02 > 0:32:08part of the squad.Charlie of course coming through, not involve had the

0:32:08 > 0:32:12programme, he just landed into this team, through some fantastic

0:32:12 > 0:32:15performances obviously at the nationals and going on the World

0:32:15 > 0:32:20Cups as well. How do Great Britain and UK Sport miss athletes like

0:32:20 > 0:32:24this?I don't think it is they miss them, it is a great opportunity to

0:32:24 > 0:32:29show anybody in the UK, anybody in Britain if they want to be part of

0:32:29 > 0:32:33the set up, you can prove your worth. Even more so in a team event

0:32:33 > 0:32:38that usually seems like a closed shop, to be able to come in with

0:32:38 > 0:32:42outstanding performances individually and team wise and

0:32:42 > 0:32:47inject fresh thinking, team KGF, they have had a different approach

0:32:47 > 0:32:51to the team pursuit and thought about it. That can only be good for

0:32:51 > 0:32:54the coach, the British coaches to look a what they are doing and bring

0:32:54 > 0:33:00ideas in too. On every level, it is very exciting. I think the Aussies

0:33:00 > 0:33:03who aren't here will watch that race and it will give them food for

0:33:03 > 0:33:07thought come Tokyo. As you say significantly Australia are not

0:33:07 > 0:33:10here, they are concentrating on Commonwealth Games in the Gold

0:33:10 > 0:33:14Coast, but Great Britain can only race against who is here.Yes,

0:33:14 > 0:33:21absolutely. Australia aside, look at the performance, the time, the fact

0:33:21 > 0:33:26the air pressure was high, a 3.53 in those conditions any team in the

0:33:26 > 0:33:29world would struggle toll beat that. It is a very exciting performance.

0:33:29 > 0:33:32We are going to concentrate on team sprinting again and the women's

0:33:32 > 0:33:35event and for Great Britain, a new line up.

0:33:35 > 0:33:42I am really excited about the team sprint. I spent the World Cup season

0:33:42 > 0:33:46riding with Sophie but Lauren produced the fastest lap. We have

0:33:46 > 0:33:52been training together, which has been nice.It is very exciting to be

0:33:52 > 0:33:56given the opportunity, but, also nerve-wracking at the thought of

0:33:56 > 0:34:01like, having to perform I guess. We have never raced together before, we

0:34:01 > 0:34:06have never done a full team sprint if training. I have only recently

0:34:06 > 0:34:10started training with her, so that is going to be very new, we are

0:34:10 > 0:34:14getting used to each other quickly, I don't think that will be an issue.

0:34:14 > 0:34:19I think going to the worlds and riding a team sprint, I do have high

0:34:19 > 0:34:22hopes for us, ultimately Tokyo is the goal and this is just a step in

0:34:22 > 0:34:30the direction to make sure we do a women's team sprint in Tokyo.

0:34:30 > 0:34:34Personal best for Lauren bait wasn't enough to see them in the medal race

0:34:34 > 0:34:40as they finished in sixth place. Here is how the medals were won.

0:34:40 > 0:34:47Ss Shmeleva and Song on lap one. Two laps to get a medal.

0:34:47 > 0:34:55Ss Shmeleva and Song on lap one. Two laps to get a medal.

0:34:55 > 0:34:57Two laps to get a medal. Remember in the last round, it is happening

0:34:57 > 0:35:02again. It is a tough one.She is not going to get close. He is not going

0:35:02 > 0:35:08to get maximum advantage here at all.It is Russia who have the clear

0:35:08 > 0:35:15advantage over China, but Zhong is a strong finishers. She is coming

0:35:15 > 0:35:24back, will it be quick enough? Two tenths of a second in half a lap.

0:35:24 > 0:35:28That was a great ride by the Russia. She is so strong. It wasn't the

0:35:28 > 0:35:33medal of the day we are looking for when they came here, but for them it

0:35:33 > 0:35:37was about gold and becoming World Champions again, but at least they

0:35:37 > 0:35:40have salvaged something and the Russian duo are on the podium. They

0:35:40 > 0:35:43have beaten China for the bronze medal.

0:35:43 > 0:35:46So the Netherlands here for the final are going with the pairing

0:35:46 > 0:35:55that rode in the first round,

0:35:55 > 0:35:59that rode in the first round, no the qualifiers so Lamberink. They are up

0:35:59 > 0:36:07against the vastly experienced German pairing. Or Welte and Vogel.

0:36:07 > 0:36:09Remember the Netherlands have a gold already on this opening day of

0:36:09 > 0:36:19competition.

0:36:19 > 0:36:26There is Miriam Welte. Welte and Vogel were the World

0:36:26 > 0:36:30Champions in 2012, 2013 and 2014. Can they do it again for the fourth

0:36:30 > 0:36:41time together? No stranger to the pressure, are they?

0:36:46 > 0:36:50Two laps to decide the World Champions in the women's team

0:36:50 > 0:36:57sprint. Miriam Welte and Lamberink on lap one.

0:36:57 > 0:37:04Welte very much in control. It is close. But the German pair are

0:37:04 > 0:37:09riding beautifully. Both of them are, there is still nothing in it.

0:37:09 > 0:37:13Germany have got the advantage here. It is with Vogel as she comes round

0:37:13 > 0:37:18the banking for the last time. About to come into the finishing straight.

0:37:18 > 0:37:26Vogel takes it. 32.605 is the winning time. And Germany are the

0:37:26 > 0:37:31World Champions again and for the fourth time in their careers Vogel

0:37:31 > 0:37:37and Welte are on top of the world in the women's team sprint. For the

0:37:37 > 0:37:41first time since 2014, it was an excellent effort from the

0:37:41 > 0:37:45Netherlands but Germany would not be denied the gold medal. It is the

0:37:45 > 0:37:53most experienced pairing of them all and they have prevailed once more.

0:37:53 > 0:37:56The spirited crowd politely applauding, while cursing under

0:37:56 > 0:37:59their breath! There was nothing you could do about that. The experience

0:37:59 > 0:38:11there I think shone through. The change over was superb.

0:38:12 > 0:38:17Just thought the Dutch rider might have been closing. Almost had to

0:38:17 > 0:38:21hesitate on the change over. Could have laid off a lot further. You

0:38:21 > 0:38:25have to come up with something stunning to beat Vogel over a lap at

0:38:25 > 0:38:26the end o a

0:38:26 > 0:38:28stunning to beat Vogel over a lap at the end o a race. Germany proving

0:38:28 > 0:38:32they are the team to beat. Very strong when it comes to women's

0:38:32 > 0:38:40sprinting. It is the experience and individually they are strong. Vogel

0:38:40 > 0:38:42multiple sprint champion and Welte, a fantastic rider, it is hard to see

0:38:42 > 0:38:47how you can beat them. They have so much experience, the technical

0:38:47 > 0:38:53about, but it is the same face, it is Russia, China, and Holland, top

0:38:53 > 0:38:58four, British team sixth place, you know, it is encouraging, obviously

0:38:58 > 0:39:02they want to win medals but to have a personal best from Lauren in the

0:39:02 > 0:39:07first lap and Katie getting back to her best in lap two, it, there is

0:39:07 > 0:39:11room for improvement. It is solid. It has been a problem for Great

0:39:11 > 0:39:16Britain, finding the next Victoria Pendleton, since she stepped away

0:39:16 > 0:39:21from the track nobody has filled her shoes. We have had Jessica Varnish,

0:39:21 > 0:39:25Becky James forced to retire. Is it a cause for concern in the British

0:39:25 > 0:39:30team?It is not cause for concern, to fill the shoes of Vicky and then

0:39:30 > 0:39:36Becky is a big challenge. Outstanding performance at the

0:39:36 > 0:39:44Olympic game, and I think looking at riders like Victoria barn, --

0:39:44 > 0:39:49Barnes, she has been 18 Monday months in rehab but she is just get

0:39:49 > 0:39:54back on the track. It is great to see her back in fold. There is is a

0:39:54 > 0:39:58lot of young talent coming through. Sophie Kate well. She is working

0:39:58 > 0:40:01hard, so there is, there is a lot of talent

0:40:01 > 0:40:04there working hard but it takes time. I think, you know, there is

0:40:04 > 0:40:10enough time, two years, you know, we could take it round, it is an area

0:40:10 > 0:40:13they are focussing on.From sprinting back to pursuiting now, we

0:40:13 > 0:40:18heard from one half of the Kenny household, now we will hear from the

0:40:18 > 0:40:21other, Laura Kenny has been talking to Alistair.

0:40:21 > 0:40:26Laura, how does that feel to be back?Incredible. Actually. I am

0:40:26 > 0:40:30really enjoying it. You know I have come back much quicker than I hoped

0:40:30 > 0:40:34for I suppose, but I an seeing it from a different viewpoint. I am

0:40:34 > 0:40:40loving every minute of it. I really am.What do you mean by that? All of

0:40:40 > 0:40:44a sudden I am mum. Mum comes before anything, and it was nerve like that

0:40:44 > 0:40:50before, I got so wrapped up into every pedal rev. It get intense,

0:40:50 > 0:40:52stressful, especially before games and that is what I stepped away

0:40:52 > 0:40:56from, and now I have come back into it, so much more relaxed than I ever

0:40:56 > 0:41:01was. And I don't know whether that is why I've come back going quicker

0:41:01 > 0:41:05than I was before, I am enjoying this sort of come back as everyone

0:41:05 > 0:41:10is calling it.In terms of the speed of your return, where people round

0:41:10 > 0:41:16you saying, take it easy?No, not really. I did a team pursuit

0:41:16 > 0:41:19session, randomly, I was planning on laying off the effort and my coach

0:41:19 > 0:41:25said, do one, get in an effort. I was no, that is not for me. And Paul

0:41:25 > 0:41:29was if not now, when? I thought this is is a good point. I finished and I

0:41:29 > 0:41:33thought I'm not that far away. That was it, came in for the team

0:41:33 > 0:41:37sessions and found myself, you know, getting round with them.In terms of

0:41:37 > 0:41:42coming back, have you spoken to anyone else about that?Yes, so I

0:41:42 > 0:41:47spoke to Jessica Ennis-Hill, quite a lot, when I was pregnant I met with

0:41:47 > 0:41:52up her to a a conversation about how she got back in, how long it took.

0:41:52 > 0:41:55She has been a great support for me. She has been on the end of the

0:41:55 > 0:42:00phone. I can ask her any question, my body has been through something

0:42:00 > 0:42:03it has never been through before. There is lots of feelings I have

0:42:03 > 0:42:08never had. She is not a bike rider but she is a power based athlete, he

0:42:08 > 0:42:11is in the gym. She does everything edo but on a running track, so she

0:42:11 > 0:42:16has been great, to have there and ask any questions, that I feel like

0:42:16 > 0:42:20I want to ask, and she has been open and honest with me.

0:42:20 > 0:42:23I want to ask, and she has been open and honest with me.They are the

0:42:23 > 0:42:23World

0:42:23 > 0:42:27and honest with me.They are the World Champions. It takes you back

0:42:27 > 0:42:30to the scene of your first ever World Championships, what your

0:42:30 > 0:42:34initial memories of that?It was incredible. I couldn't believe it

0:42:34 > 0:42:38happened. I couldn't believe I had gone to my first World Championships

0:42:38 > 0:42:43as a senior and won. I remember screaming with Dan ay and Wendy, it

0:42:43 > 0:42:47was incredible. The start of it, that was the start of my career,

0:42:47 > 0:42:50then I was almost carefree, and I just got on a bike, nobody knew who

0:42:50 > 0:42:56I was and I just rode, and I loved every minute of it, whereas now

0:42:56 > 0:42:58people expect me to step on the start line and win almost. Hopefully

0:42:58 > 0:43:04now becoming a mum that side of me will come back, because it is

0:43:04 > 0:43:08intense and it gets stressful. I am probably the most nervous Olympian

0:43:08 > 0:43:14you will meet. Hopefully I will get back to that 18-year-old me who got

0:43:14 > 0:43:18on and thought I'll just ride round. Do you remember thinking I want more

0:43:18 > 0:43:21of this?I knew I wanted to be Olympic champion, that was the start

0:43:21 > 0:43:26of it for me, that year, I hadn't won a team pursuit. I didn't really

0:43:26 > 0:43:29expect to be in the team. After that you make the team, you win, so like

0:43:29 > 0:43:34this is what I want now, I want to be Olympic champion and I can see

0:43:34 > 0:43:382012 in sight, but before that I hadn't thought about 2012. I didn't

0:43:38 > 0:43:42think it was going to be an option. This team has set new levels and

0:43:42 > 0:43:45times and do you feel you will have to do that to win that next Olympic

0:43:45 > 0:43:50Gold as well? For sure, I think that happens in any Olympic cycle. You

0:43:50 > 0:43:54will have to go better, the world doesn't stand still. We have a

0:43:54 > 0:43:57meeting, and you have to kind of predict your time, because that is

0:43:57 > 0:44:01what your training is based round, and it is always, like it shocks

0:44:01 > 0:44:05you, there is no way I can do that time, there is no way that we going

0:44:05 > 0:44:10to be able to pedal that fast and do that time. You get pretty near it in

0:44:10 > 0:44:14that World Championships then you see it happen at the Olympics so you

0:44:14 > 0:44:18are always striving to be better, to get that incredible time they set

0:44:18 > 0:44:23four years out.

0:44:23 > 0:44:27Going into these championships, what would you like to achieve? In an

0:44:27 > 0:44:31ideal world, you want to win every race you go for so first one I want

0:44:31 > 0:44:37be in the format, so get on the start line, and see what time that

0:44:37 > 0:44:43line-up can do but ideally be in the gold and silver medal ride off.

0:44:43 > 0:44:49They made it to that race but first, the race for bronze.

0:44:49 > 0:44:56COMMENTATOR: The race for bronze years on.

0:44:57 > 0:45:08years on. Italy and Canada.Good, tidy start by them. Two gaps there.

0:45:13 > 0:45:20Italy have the slenderest of advantages.Canada got themselves

0:45:20 > 0:45:27into formation quicker. The Italians at Chile going for it. -- actually

0:45:27 > 0:45:32going forward. Both teams technically looking good in these

0:45:32 > 0:45:37early changes. Nice change by Italy just off-camera, smoothly off the

0:45:37 > 0:45:46wheel.

0:45:46 > 0:45:54wheel. Smoothly into place on the back.Balsamo for Italy.The lead

0:45:54 > 0:46:01swinging back and forward. Slow change by Italy. Everything counts

0:46:01 > 0:46:09when it is this close, down to hundredths of a second. The opening

0:46:09 > 0:46:16kilometre 1.8, in line with other rides.

0:46:16 > 0:46:20rides.Still, just roughly a tenth of a second in it between the two

0:46:20 > 0:46:30sets of riders in this nip and tuck for bronze.

0:46:30 > 0:46:38for bronze. We have seen some close racing. Both teams look well

0:46:38 > 0:46:45composed. They headed towards the halfway point. This race has been

0:46:45 > 0:46:50extraordinarily close, who will start to open up a potentially

0:46:50 > 0:47:01decisive advantage?It is Canada now, with a half seconds lead.

0:47:01 > 0:47:05That's the biggest difference we have seen plus far, still back and

0:47:05 > 0:47:12forwards, though. All to play for. Italy refusing to give ground. Still

0:47:12 > 0:47:18three tenths of a second.Italy's changes getting more ropey. That was

0:47:18 > 0:47:24very shallow onto the back which indicates that I haven't got the

0:47:24 > 0:47:35confidence to get the height. Zero point

0:47:35 > 0:47:39point to -- zero point to the second. Leicester one tenth of a

0:47:39 > 0:47:43second as they head towards the last minute of racing. What a final this

0:47:43 > 0:47:46is proving to be in the race for bronze between these two, it could

0:47:46 > 0:47:54go either way the touring Italy and Canada. It could hardly be closer!

0:47:54 > 0:47:58Hundredths of a second, the blink of an eye between these two.Canada

0:47:58 > 0:48:07down to three now.Roorda drops out. They are down to a core group of

0:48:07 > 0:48:11three and still less than a tenth of a second between these two, it will

0:48:11 > 0:48:16be a sprint for the line going down to the final lap.Italy have their

0:48:16 > 0:48:22nose in the front with the numbers and they have the advantage. Canada,

0:48:22 > 0:48:27another poor change which will cost them.Quite a lot it will cost them.

0:48:27 > 0:48:35Balsamo surges forward, Italy with three riders still going and it is

0:48:35 > 0:48:39over one second, the advantage for the Italians. Both teams are

0:48:39 > 0:48:44starting to feel it in the last half a minute of racing, it will come

0:48:44 > 0:48:49down to who makes the mistake. The Italians know they are in the lead,

0:48:49 > 0:48:53nearly two seconds. The next time they come over the line, they will

0:48:53 > 0:48:58hear the bell and what a welcome sound that is, too. Italy pedalling

0:48:58 > 0:49:03towards the bronze medal in the women's team pursuit. It has been a

0:49:03 > 0:49:07successful world Championships for the Italians, for both men and women

0:49:07 > 0:49:11in this event, and Italy take the bronze medal, just as the men did

0:49:11 > 0:49:16earlier on.

0:49:19 > 0:49:27earlier on.Well earned by Italy.

0:49:27 > 0:49:31And the riders for the final being introduced to the crowd as the

0:49:31 > 0:49:36Italians celebrate their place on the podium and we turn our attention

0:49:36 > 0:49:42to the race for gold.

0:49:42 > 0:49:50to the race for gold. Archibald, Kenny, Barker and Nelson. And the

0:49:50 > 0:49:59world champions, Valente and the rest for the United States. Good

0:49:59 > 0:50:03thing start from the pair of them, Valente and Katie Archibald for

0:50:03 > 0:50:11Great Britain. Valente up and running quickly, Archibald has Laura

0:50:11 > 0:50:18Kenny behind her.Valente is a links and a bit into her team-mates. The

0:50:18 > 0:50:24Americans still getting get together.Over half a second up on

0:50:24 > 0:50:28Great Britain. Remember, if you are with our coverage before, the

0:50:28 > 0:50:33Americans have a very good start. Yes, in every round. Three quarters

0:50:33 > 0:50:37of a second but they will pay a price in the last few seconds of

0:50:37 > 0:50:42racing but they are so strong, it is going to be a lock to claw back and

0:50:42 > 0:50:45the British team still losing ground. Will it be a winning return

0:50:45 > 0:50:51for Laura Kenny to the track? Four-time Olympic champion. Early

0:50:51 > 0:50:55advantage very much with the United States, almost one second up.The

0:50:55 > 0:51:00British team having last turn the tide and starting to make some

0:51:00 > 0:51:04inroads here. They are making inroads quickly so it is about

0:51:04 > 0:51:11momentum in this game. It isn't even down to times. The British team are

0:51:11 > 0:51:14travelling considerably faster and you can see how close to each other

0:51:14 > 0:51:18they are. 0.3 of a second so they've turned around three quarters of a

0:51:18 > 0:51:25second.Strong riding from father-mac for Great Britain. Great

0:51:25 > 0:51:31Britain completely turning the momentum of this final round.A

0:51:31 > 0:51:37little bit of a gap being left here at the back with the Brits. The

0:51:37 > 0:51:41Americans have got a better formation.Look at that, dead level,

0:51:41 > 0:51:45the pair of them!Dead level when you've been three quarters of a

0:51:45 > 0:51:49second up means you're losing ground and the tables have turned because

0:51:49 > 0:51:55the British four have their nose in front.Their nose is in front and

0:51:55 > 0:52:01Archibald leading the way. Laura Kenny riding behind her, and behind

0:52:01 > 0:52:04her, Alan Barker, Nelson on the back. The United States have gone

0:52:04 > 0:52:10down to three. That is a significant loss. There are gaps between the

0:52:10 > 0:52:16wheels as well. They were fast in the previous round but they were

0:52:16 > 0:52:21ragged, maybe they are paying the price for the false start. The

0:52:21 > 0:52:24advantages over one seconds for Great Britain and it is looking very

0:52:24 > 0:52:31good at this moment in time for a British point of view.Certainly,

0:52:31 > 0:52:35the Americans have started to pull back, they are coming back quite

0:52:35 > 0:52:43quickly.They tend to come back quick play when Dygert is in the

0:52:43 > 0:52:52front.She needs to do the most terms. They are back in front. It is

0:52:52 > 0:52:56not all over. So, the United States take the lead. There is no room for

0:52:56 > 0:53:01error, they are down to three. It is an advantage of just over three

0:53:01 > 0:53:04tenths of a second and what looked very good for Great Britain a couple

0:53:04 > 0:53:10of laps to go looks like they need to dig deep. To try to turn this

0:53:10 > 0:53:16final round. Just one kilometre to go, Britain look as if they may go

0:53:16 > 0:53:22down to three any time soon. Katie Archibald powering along the front

0:53:22 > 0:53:25and it is Emily Nelson losing contact with the others. And they

0:53:25 > 0:53:31are zero point three down, now the British team are fighting back, but

0:53:31 > 0:53:37it is very late in the day now. What a desperate fight this will be in

0:53:37 > 0:53:42the closing stages of this race. Archibald peels off and Laura Kenny

0:53:42 > 0:53:48digs in. The gap is still half a second, two laps to go. It is a big

0:53:48 > 0:53:54ask and it is hard to see them doing it, the way Dygert is at the front.

0:53:54 > 0:54:00Eleanor Baka peels off. Archibald is there, they take the bell, the

0:54:00 > 0:54:03United States leading the way and the United States are heading for

0:54:03 > 0:54:09the gold medal. This is a superb ride by the defending champions, led

0:54:09 > 0:54:12by Dygert who will bring them home and there's nothing Great Britain

0:54:12 > 0:54:18can do about it. The United States claimed the gold medal and Great

0:54:18 > 0:54:23Britain finish with the silver and Laura Kenny's return to elite

0:54:23 > 0:54:27competition sees her on the podium at the world Championships,

0:54:27 > 0:54:34alongside Barker, Nelson and Dickinson. Great Britain looked as

0:54:34 > 0:54:41if they were in the driving seat and heading for a gold. Suddenly, in the

0:54:41 > 0:54:43space of 250 metres, it changed completely.

0:54:48 > 0:54:51Congratulations, a silver medal, back here where it began for you.

0:54:51 > 0:54:55You would have loved to have taken a gold home but given how quickly

0:54:55 > 0:55:00you've come back in the sport, how pleased I you?Personally, I'm very

0:55:00 > 0:55:03pleased because I never expected to be back at a world championship so

0:55:03 > 0:55:11soon. I really enjoy being back with the girls. We would have loved to

0:55:11 > 0:55:18come away with the gold-medal. Any race we enter, we want to win but he

0:55:18 > 0:55:22can't help but feel disappointed but the Americans rode unbelievably

0:55:22 > 0:55:28again so hats off to them.How you feeling in yourself?Shattered, I'm

0:55:28 > 0:55:33normally in bed with the little one at this time. It is like interval

0:55:33 > 0:55:39training at night-time! Honestly, I've loved every minute back at the

0:55:39 > 0:55:43track.You and Jason, a couple of silver medals to take back. A

0:55:43 > 0:55:48tremendous achievement. Thanks, yeah, and to add to his collection,

0:55:48 > 0:55:54I guess! I haven't done and awful lot of training so I can be

0:55:54 > 0:55:57personally very pleased with this event. And it has shown we have a

0:55:57 > 0:56:02lot of strength and depth in the team, being able to mix it up a bit.

0:56:02 > 0:56:08Definitely. Eleanor Dickinson was part of our second round and it

0:56:08 > 0:56:11shows how many numbers we've got, and how British cycling have worked

0:56:11 > 0:56:21on the injuries throw gram. -- the endurance programme.What a

0:56:21 > 0:56:28performance, and what a wafer Laura Kenny to mark

0:56:28 > 0:56:32Kenny to mark her comeback. The focus is on Laura from the media.

0:56:32 > 0:56:37She could not have done any more. Great for her, great for the team,

0:56:37 > 0:56:41great to see the riders coming through, Emily Nelson an Eleanor

0:56:41 > 0:56:46Dickinson, stepping up, performing as a team. It wasn't just about

0:56:46 > 0:56:50being against the Americans, Dygert was head and shoulders above the

0:56:50 > 0:56:54rest. Whenever she was at the front, she was so strong, she was gaining a

0:56:54 > 0:56:58significant amount on the GB quartet so very tough to beat but there is

0:56:58 > 0:57:03room for improvement. She is an incredible athlete who has stepped

0:57:03 > 0:57:07in the shoes of Sarah Hammer very well.It is a shame, isn't it? Sarah

0:57:07 > 0:57:13was so strong for so many years, and great battle between law and Sarah

0:57:13 > 0:57:17in the individual and on them but in the team pursuit she was always the

0:57:17 > 0:57:22strong anchor leg. Dygert has filled those shoes and more and I've never

0:57:22 > 0:57:28seen a world final in Batman where the team gone ahead, fallen behind

0:57:28 > 0:57:32and come back with such a strong kick at the end. It was very

0:57:32 > 0:57:38impressive to see.Katie Archibald in great form, Elinor Barker in

0:57:38 > 0:57:42great form but Laura Kenny coming back, six months after having a

0:57:42 > 0:57:46baby. You've got any baby at home, two little ones, you know how that

0:57:46 > 0:57:52disrupts your sleep patterns. The actual achievement of coming back,

0:57:52 > 0:57:56being this competitive so soon is so remarkable. It is truly remarkable

0:57:56 > 0:58:00and isn't just about giving birth and having all the difficulties of

0:58:00 > 0:58:04lack of sleep and change in lifestyle. It is for Jason as well,

0:58:04 > 0:58:09two of them competing at the highest level, doing so well, I take my hat

0:58:09 > 0:58:14off to them because it is a remarkable achievement. There is

0:58:14 > 0:58:18always one person that gets the main attention and it is important it is

0:58:18 > 0:58:23not just one person but it is a whole squad of riders and it is

0:58:23 > 0:58:26great to see them all receiving vessel the medals but Laura receives

0:58:26 > 0:58:30a huge pat on the back with that formance. She lifts that team,

0:58:30 > 0:58:34brings such a boost and she is such a popular character. Loads more to

0:58:34 > 0:58:42come. We have the men's individual pursuit. Charlie Tanfield recorded

0:58:42 > 0:58:49one of the fastest times ever, he will be eyeing a place on the podium

0:58:49 > 0:58:55in the individual pursuit.

0:58:56 > 0:59:05in the individual pursuit. Can Vogel add another medal? A British pair

0:59:05 > 0:59:12take part in the Kieron. Charlie Tanfield, we heard from him earlier

0:59:12 > 0:59:16after his success in the team pursuit. He is part of the hamlet

0:59:16 > 0:59:23her cycling team. So, too, is Daniel Bigham and here is their story.

0:59:23 > 0:59:28Wonderful story, they've set themselves up, one of a student, one

0:59:28 > 0:59:33of them taking off work to get good. They are handing it to national

0:59:33 > 0:59:41teams globally.

0:59:41 > 0:59:46We beat the goodbye boys and obviously we go out for a few beers,

0:59:46 > 0:59:50and that is where we started talking about, we have done six training

0:59:50 > 0:59:55sessions here, where can we be in like, a whole winter's preparation

0:59:55 > 1:00:00for a team pursuit? I don't think there was an aim to get to a major

1:00:00 > 1:00:04Championship, the aim was to be as good as we could, a group of lads on

1:00:04 > 1:00:09the same team and see what we could achieve. Then we were like let's try

1:00:09 > 1:00:15and win a World Cup. Then we did that.Up towards the line. These new

1:00:15 > 1:00:18goals keep presenting themselves and seeing where we get to, we want to

1:00:18 > 1:00:25be as good as we can be.It has been interesting and exciting to watch

1:00:25 > 1:00:29team KJF come into the men's endurance arena if you like, and

1:00:29 > 1:00:33they have thought very carefully about what they want to do, and how

1:00:33 > 1:00:38they think they can get the best out of THEs. How has the training gone,

1:00:38 > 1:00:43blending into the British team?Yes, doing stuff differently I think

1:00:43 > 1:00:49their ethos is different to how we have approach our training, the

1:00:49 > 1:00:53sessions are specific and controlsed, whereas we train as hard

1:00:53 > 1:00:57as we feel we can. What is your expecting of yourself, what do you

1:00:57 > 1:01:02want to achieve here?Looking to three and get o the podium. I am not

1:01:02 > 1:01:08going to hedge round it. Winning the World Championships would be

1:01:08 > 1:01:14amazing.It is exciting to see them put the pressure on the riders that

1:01:14 > 1:01:18are established riders in the programme and great I think,

1:01:18 > 1:01:22hopefully for others to see if you can get out there, you race your

1:01:22 > 1:01:27bike, focus on what you can do, the boar is -- door is always open.If

1:01:27 > 1:01:32you think back and think I would never have got here, everything has

1:01:32 > 1:01:35landed in place and done the right things at the right time and it has

1:01:35 > 1:01:44come together. A bit of a surprise. It comes to realisation when I was

1:01:44 > 1:01:47driving down here, then I thought, it's happening I'm going to the

1:01:47 > 1:01:57world champs. A time of 4.2647 for Dan put him in

1:01:57 > 1:02:00ninth place while Charlie Tanfield clocked 4.14025 and was pushed out

1:02:00 > 1:02:04of the gold medal ride off in the very last heat. Let us see how he

1:02:04 > 1:02:10gets on in the race for bronze. Place for bronze a

1:02:10 > 1:02:12gets on in the race for bronze. Place for bronze a few seconds away.

1:02:12 > 1:02:17Both away cleanly then, the race for bronze here in the men's individual

1:02:17 > 1:02:21pursuit, fan tan -- Charlie Tanfield of Great Britain against the

1:02:21 > 1:02:26Russian. On paper, Tanfield with a slight advantage going in but there

1:02:26 > 1:02:31might not be much between these two. He seems to have gone off fast yet

1:02:31 > 1:02:38again. One sixth, posted in the previous round, he is half a second

1:02:38 > 1:02:45up nearly in the opening lap. That very very tucked position. Hands

1:02:45 > 1:02:51clasped together. A lot of time spent in the wind tunnel. He has a

1:02:51 > 1:02:56distinctive position. They put more time into this than anybody else,

1:02:56 > 1:03:00probe more than the hagsal team. For of them living together in a house

1:03:00 > 1:03:05in Derby. Begged borrowed everything they needed to compete against the

1:03:05 > 1:03:09best in the world, now finding themselves with the British team.

1:03:09 > 1:03:15One second ahead, almost. As they approach this opening kilometre. Now

1:03:15 > 1:03:18lets see if he has toned down that start a bit.

1:03:18 > 1:03:28No. Is the answer. He is going at it again. Another 1.6

1:03:28 > 1:03:32opener.Tanfield trying to grab this race by the scruff of the neck early

1:03:32 > 1:03:38on, and then he will try to hang on to it. 1.4 seconds the advantage

1:03:38 > 1:03:43over the Russian. He has gone out quicker though, considerably

1:03:43 > 1:03:52quicker, a short 1 8 for him. So he certainly raised his game here,

1:03:52 > 1:03:57Tanfield died off considerably. The Russian didn't. Despite the 1.5

1:03:57 > 1:04:03second gap, it could go all the way to line. Let's see.

1:04:03 > 1:04:06So Tanfield with the advantage as they head in the direction of the

1:04:06 > 1:04:14half way mark of this race.I want to know how he can see where she

1:04:14 > 1:04:22going, his head is so low, he must be riding using the force I think.

1:04:22 > 1:04:32I SatNav maybe. There was a strain on the eyes. Well, it is now stemmed

1:04:32 > 1:04:37at 1.6 seconds and the Russian is starting to nibble away at that

1:04:37 > 1:04:44lead. Has he got enough distance to do it? He hasn't got the buffer he

1:04:44 > 1:04:48had in the previous round, Tanfield, so he has got a fight on his hands

1:04:48 > 1:04:53here.Half a dozen laps to go. Let's see the gap, it is coming

1:04:53 > 1:05:00down.It is coming down. The Russian is travelling faster

1:05:00 > 1:05:08now. Erso slightly but he is just eating away at that lead.

1:05:08 > 1:05:13This could go all too, all the way to wire and Charlie Tanfield has got

1:05:13 > 1:05:17a battle op his hands here. It is still almost nine tenths of a second

1:05:17 > 1:05:21but as you can see he has taken another bite out of it. The Russian

1:05:21 > 1:05:26is closing in on Charlie Tanfield, the longer this race goes on, and

1:05:26 > 1:05:30there are still four laps to go. Less than half a second in it. The

1:05:30 > 1:05:34Russian taking a moment to glass across the track. Realises he has a

1:05:34 > 1:05:39chance at this now. He has upped hissedhis game. Tanfield slower than

1:05:39 > 1:05:44his previous round.And the pendulum is swinging the Russian's way here n

1:05:44 > 1:05:48the closing kilometre of this individual pursuit bronze medal

1:05:48 > 1:05:53match up. The Russian looks stronger and stronger the longer the race

1:05:53 > 1:05:58goes on and Charlie Tanfield, as you can see, is losing ground, hand over

1:05:58 > 1:06:06fist here, with just under two laps to go.He is suffering badly. He has

1:06:06 > 1:06:12given it his all his but he won't come away with a medal. That

1:06:12 > 1:06:16individual medal is going to slip through his fingers against the

1:06:16 > 1:06:22Russian, the Russian power round the track. It is a painful last lap for

1:06:22 > 1:06:25Charlie Tanfield of Great Britain, and the Russian now hurtling over

1:06:25 > 1:06:30the line, to claim the bronze medal, and Charlie Tanfield having led for

1:06:30 > 1:06:39the first half of the race, was beaten in the second half.

1:06:39 > 1:06:44beaten in the second half. The Russian's time.A full second faster

1:06:44 > 1:06:48for the Russian than this morning's ride. He will be pleased with that,

1:06:48 > 1:06:53coming away with a medal. Barely looks out of breath here. Charlie

1:06:53 > 1:07:00Tanfield went slower in the ride, really up against it. Had a

1:07:00 > 1:07:07fantastic winter season but perhaps not on his best form here. Still,

1:07:07 > 1:07:104.15, not to be sneezed at.

1:07:15 > 1:07:20The men's individual pursuit final, and what a final it could be.le Vera

1:07:20 > 1:07:26the fastest in the first round -- Olveira. Ganna, he knows what it is

1:07:26 > 1:07:32like to win the world title he did it two years ago, can he do it

1:07:32 > 1:07:36again? Both cyclists race on the road as well as the track, bringing

1:07:36 > 1:07:42fine form here to Apeldoorn in the Netherlands. It is Oliveira who has

1:07:42 > 1:07:46made the quicker start. Almost half a second up already, on the time of

1:07:46 > 1:07:54Ganna from Italy. He did that in the previous round, a 16.5 opener, in

1:07:54 > 1:08:02line with his final time.Ganna 17.2 in the opening kilometre. A powerful

1:08:02 > 1:08:08looking rider. 6.4. -- 6'4". And almost a second now,

1:08:08 > 1:08:12the advantage.Yes, storming ahead now.

1:08:12 > 1:08:18Is this what you would expect to see given the way they have ridden...

1:08:18 > 1:08:21Probably a bigger advantage, there wasn't this big a gap over the

1:08:21 > 1:08:26opening kilometre from the previous ride, but it is Ganna that has gone

1:08:26 > 1:08:32slower, actually. Oliveira has gone slightly slower as well. This is

1:08:32 > 1:08:37part of Championship performing. It is as much about being backing your

1:08:37 > 1:08:42ride as your pure speed on a one off effort. You have to be in the race

1:08:42 > 1:08:51but don't give it all up until you get to the final. This could be a

1:08:51 > 1:08:54strategic by Ganna.He is making ground now.He finishing strongly

1:08:54 > 1:08:58against Charlie Tanfield in the first round, Ganna, last lap or two

1:08:58 > 1:09:02was really quick, he was losing to fan field -- Tanfield all the way.

1:09:02 > 1:09:07He is working hard as they approach the mid-point, but he is holding his

1:09:07 > 1:09:15own, that is for sure.Chipping away a bit.Very slight frame, hasn't he.

1:09:15 > 1:09:20The rider from Portugal. Tucked down, rolling the shoulders in,

1:09:20 > 1:09:24bringing theel does -- elbows together. Head between the shoulder

1:09:24 > 1:09:31blades.The advantage just being whittled away. Ganna getting into

1:09:31 > 1:09:38his stride here now UOf the two I would say he is working harder. But

1:09:38 > 1:09:45there is not much racing left to do. Less than two kilometres. Ganna gets

1:09:45 > 1:09:51closer and closer.

1:09:52 > 1:09:55closer and closer. Oliveira looks setted in his position. We have seen

1:09:55 > 1:10:00it before, the American team pursuit looked ragged but the raw force was

1:10:00 > 1:10:07there to do the job. 0. Of a second. And closing -- 0.3.Ganna is very

1:10:07 > 1:10:13much within touching distance of the gold medal, Oliveira has the

1:10:13 > 1:10:21advantage, but not by much. 3.08 at the three k mark was the time posted

1:10:21 > 1:10:26by Oliveira previously. He won't get near that now. So a much slower

1:10:26 > 1:10:31ride. Ganna is in the lead. It is a big finish. Ganna barely if the

1:10:31 > 1:10:37lead. He just about gets his nose if front. We are in the last four laps

1:10:37 > 1:10:43of this race now.It is about momentum, the pace he is carrying in

1:10:43 > 1:10:49and he is moving away.Ganna got faster and faster in that first

1:10:49 > 1:10:52round race, and now he can sense that the world title could be his

1:10:52 > 1:10:57again. He rides for Emirates,s on the road at the top level of

1:10:57 > 1:11:01international road racing, and now, he is at the top again on the track,

1:11:01 > 1:11:05having returned to the track as part of the Italian team pursuit squad.

1:11:05 > 1:11:10He already had a bronze medal here and Oliveira is under pressure, he

1:11:10 > 1:11:16is struggling to find an answer, his legs are hurting and at the bell he

1:11:16 > 1:11:21is 1.3 secs down. Nothing is going to stop Ganna from Italy. The

1:11:21 > 1:11:2421-year-old is about to become the world individual pursuit champion

1:11:24 > 1:11:30for the second time in his career. It is gold for Italy, gold for Ganna

1:11:30 > 1:11:34and Oliveira who looked the man to beat going into the final, led at

1:11:34 > 1:11:39the start, led for the first half of race but in the end didn't quite

1:11:39 > 1:11:43have the speed and staying power to match the Italian. It is Ganna's

1:11:43 > 1:11:51title. Fir I -- fairly pleased.Ganna who

1:11:51 > 1:11:56finished with the silver medal last year, back on top of the world once

1:11:56 > 1:11:57again.

1:11:57 > 1:11:58year, back on top of the world once again.

1:11:58 > 1:12:03I can see from the look on your face how disappointed you are with that.

1:12:03 > 1:12:12To go so close to a second podium and not to be able to deliver.Yeah.

1:12:12 > 1:12:20Well, I guess I learned a lot from the experience.

1:12:20 > 1:12:25the experience. Tactically, let myself down. Yeah. That's the way it

1:12:25 > 1:12:30go, isn't it. Fair play, he was strong, he put on a great show. Well

1:12:30 > 1:12:35done mate.As you can see you are in among special company in the last

1:12:35 > 1:12:40four of the World Championships.I know, to be, one of the top four

1:12:40 > 1:12:46people in the world, it is nothing to be disappointed about. Everybody

1:12:46 > 1:12:50likes to win, don't they. But looking at this whole expense of

1:12:50 > 1:12:55coming to the World Championship, your first time, setting foot on the

1:12:55 > 1:12:58biggest stage, you must be really proud of what you have been able to

1:12:58 > 1:13:03do?Definitely, yeah. I feel as if I have come so far, you know, in such

1:13:03 > 1:13:08a short space of time, to be able to mix it up with the top guys in the

1:13:08 > 1:13:13world is unbelievable. Hopefully I will have another shot at it next

1:13:13 > 1:13:18year and you know, get my pacing better and add a few things here and

1:13:18 > 1:13:23there, so I will be here next year. I think we will see a lot more of

1:13:23 > 1:13:27you Charlie. So disappointing for Charlie Tanfield. Esaw you having a

1:13:27 > 1:13:31chat with him later Chris, he was disappointed but what a remarkable

1:13:31 > 1:13:36way he stepped on to world stage here he goes home with a gold medal.

1:13:36 > 1:13:43Not many go to the World Championships and come back with a

1:13:43 > 1:13:47rainbow jersey, I am, you could be forgiven for thinking anything is a

1:13:47 > 1:13:53bonus, I am delighted I am here, but he wasn't, he was so eager to win a

1:13:53 > 1:13:56medal, and, I am glad to see he is that disappointed. It is a good

1:13:56 > 1:14:00thing.There is a lot more to come from Charlie. This is very much a

1:14:00 > 1:14:04learning process for him. Absolutely. He is fresh, fresh blood

1:14:04 > 1:14:07into the team pursuit team, the way he and his team-mates approach the

1:14:07 > 1:14:11team pursuit and their individual training is a breath of fresh air.

1:14:11 > 1:14:16It is channelling the British coach, it is inspiring his team-mates here,

1:14:16 > 1:14:22you know, it has been a fantastic aDirks he has been a fantastic

1:14:22 > 1:14:29addition to the team as has Dan.Dan finishing in ninth. He is excited

1:14:29 > 1:14:35about stepping up to the stage in Brisbane for the Commonwealth Games.

1:14:35 > 1:14:38They have that chance to build on the momentum. A big gap and loads of

1:14:38 > 1:14:43time to reflect when you can lose momentum. They have a huge

1:14:43 > 1:14:47Championships coming up after the worlds, they have the European

1:14:47 > 1:14:51Championships in Glasgow, so there are stepping stones towards next

1:14:51 > 1:14:56season, so they are excited. You can see, it is a lovely part of your

1:14:56 > 1:15:00career, a steep learning curve, every time you get on the track you

1:15:00 > 1:15:05make improvements. We are going to get to the medal races for the

1:15:05 > 1:15:12sprint. Can Christina Vogel add another medal to

1:15:12 > 1:15:12sprint. Can Christina Vogel add another medal to her impressive

1:15:12 > 1:15:21haul. This is an interesting one. Vogel is on form.

1:15:21 > 1:15:29These two have sailed through this competition untroubled, on rough old

1:15:29 > 1:15:34-- not ruffled. They have. We have seen such close racing throughout

1:15:34 > 1:15:37this Championships so far that these two, there has been definite

1:15:37 > 1:15:45daylight between then and the competition.

1:15:45 > 1:15:49competition. -- between them and the competition.The sprint final, best

1:15:49 > 1:16:00of three. Vogel... Defending her title. They've got to keep going

1:16:00 > 1:16:07here at at least walking pace. The rider having to take the lead on the

1:16:07 > 1:16:14first spot. Then they can choose to stand still for 32nds maximum,

1:16:14 > 1:16:27doesn't happen that much these days. A tactic much more important when

1:16:27 > 1:16:31the racing was on bigger tracks, trying to force your opponent to go

1:16:31 > 1:16:42to the front. The straights much bigger on the out door velodromes.

1:16:42 > 1:16:45We don't use those for the world Championships. It would be great if

1:16:45 > 1:16:48they were used because it would change the competition, things would

1:16:48 > 1:16:52have to be done differently. You'd have different tactics, different

1:16:52 > 1:16:58equipment, possibly.Would be pretty cold out there now, wouldn't it? I

1:16:58 > 1:17:04think we will stay here.Vogel on the front for Germany, as they come

1:17:04 > 1:17:11through now to take the bell. Morton having a little look on the outside.

1:17:11 > 1:17:18Morton still with ground to make up. Vogel 100% effort from her now, flat

1:17:18 > 1:17:24out sprint. Has Morton got the speed? No, it is 1-0 to Germany and

1:17:24 > 1:17:30the defending champion, your speed carried her home. She controlled has

1:17:30 > 1:17:37been very well, just didn't let her opponent get a look in. Well, I

1:17:37 > 1:17:44think Vogel showed that experience and tactical ability controls the

1:17:44 > 1:17:53race. The tables are turned now so can tempt two keep the advantage she

1:17:53 > 1:18:03has offered raw? In this instance, it is an advantage. Vogel rather

1:18:03 > 1:18:08than laying up, pressuring her opponent by going close on the

1:18:08 > 1:18:13wheel. Don't know what I'm going to do, don't know if I'm going to try

1:18:13 > 1:18:22to pass you, if at all, the speed slowly rises. Two laps to go, coming

1:18:22 > 1:18:29to the home straight now.She is very assertive tactically, Vogel.

1:18:29 > 1:18:37She has fantastic form.

1:18:37 > 1:18:42She has fantastic form. Forcing Morton to pick up the pace, still

1:18:42 > 1:18:46not committing. Now they are starting to commit an Vogel goes to

1:18:46 > 1:18:55the front. Morton fighting back, doing everything she can do not

1:18:55 > 1:19:02concede ground and Morton is proving to be a formidable opponent. That

1:19:02 > 1:19:07was a very strong sprint from Morton. She had to get it right that

1:19:07 > 1:19:11time. Vogel put herself in a great position but Morton said, no, you

1:19:11 > 1:19:16won't come past me this time. It will go to a third and deciding

1:19:16 > 1:19:24cried in the women's sprint final. -- deciding ride.I wasn't expecting

1:19:24 > 1:19:30that one. I thought Vogel was going to get it. I don't know if that was

1:19:30 > 1:19:38a tactical mistake. She didn't manage to get over the top. I think

1:19:38 > 1:19:44it is the first time in this competition we haven't seen straight

1:19:44 > 1:19:53rides since we got down to the match sprinting. So, this could be it now.

1:19:53 > 1:19:57This is it, the race for the gold-medal, three laps to decide the

1:19:57 > 1:20:04outcome.

1:20:04 > 1:20:08Is Vogel going to become world champion for the 11th time in her

1:20:08 > 1:20:15career?

1:20:16 > 1:20:20Morton looking to add the world crown to her Commonwealth title she

1:20:20 > 1:20:27won in Glasgow in 2014.

1:20:32 > 1:20:36The tension builds, the prospect what is to come in the next minute

1:20:36 > 1:20:47or so. 1.5 laps to go.Vogel is in the position she prefers. She can

1:20:47 > 1:20:52control the race. Tell you what, it'll be hard. The race is on with

1:20:52 > 1:20:59200 metres to go. Everything out there on the track. Morton trying to

1:20:59 > 1:21:07draw level, Vogel holding her off, and Morton cannot manage it! Vogel

1:21:07 > 1:21:10wins the world title again! She was pushed all the way by that second

1:21:10 > 1:21:17ride by Morton but Vogel dark deep in the decisive race and she is the

1:21:17 > 1:21:23champion again for the fourth time in her career. She wins the world

1:21:23 > 1:21:28sprint title, she successfully defends her crown won in Hong Kong

1:21:28 > 1:21:3212 months ago, and that is the 11th world

1:21:32 > 1:21:3412 months ago, and that is the 11th world title of Vogel's career.

1:21:34 > 1:21:39Many congratulations. We could see celebrating. You've won 11 world

1:21:39 > 1:21:42championship titles but this one seems to mean just as much as all

1:21:42 > 1:21:50the others.I'm sorry, my legs... They are burning away. It is always

1:21:50 > 1:21:56fantastic. For me, from year to year, the pressure is getting higher

1:21:56 > 1:22:02and higher. Normally, it is easy to win but it isn't it is getting

1:22:02 > 1:22:11harder and harder. Everyone wants to see me fall and it is hard to fly.

1:22:11 > 1:22:18It is incredible. What a sprinter, Chris, you enjoyed

1:22:18 > 1:22:22that, didn't you?What a classic encounter, Morton should have won

1:22:22 > 1:22:27it, she has the horsepower, she was quicker in the time trial but you

1:22:27 > 1:22:33see how canny Vogel is, she exposes the weaknesses of her opponent. The

1:22:33 > 1:22:37biggest thing Morton didn't do is create space, a target to run at,

1:22:37 > 1:22:41she got too close to Vogel and when you are right on the back of the

1:22:41 > 1:22:47wheels, it is hard to come off so a well earned victory for Vogel.

1:22:47 > 1:22:52You've got to start looking at Vogel and comparing her to the greats, her

1:22:52 > 1:22:58longevity and her ability to keep winning gold medals.11 gold world

1:22:58 > 1:23:02titles, you could see how much more fun she was having last year. Today,

1:23:02 > 1:23:06you could see for the first time, she was a lot more hesitant, there

1:23:06 > 1:23:11was not the same confidence but when it came to the crunch, she had the

1:23:11 > 1:23:15psychological edge on all of her opponents. Morton will be kicking

1:23:15 > 1:23:21herself. She will analyse the videos. They will realise there were

1:23:21 > 1:23:24mistakes. If she had played to her strengths, she could have beaten

1:23:24 > 1:23:31Vogel.The first rainbow jersey of these championships, the women's

1:23:31 > 1:23:36scratch race in Hong Kong. Elinor Barker took silver for GP and here

1:23:36 > 1:23:40it is Katie Archibald flying the flag. Let's take a look at how she

1:23:40 > 1:23:44got on.

1:23:44 > 1:23:48Archibald is trying to chase these two at the front. Seven to go this

1:23:48 > 1:24:00is the big effort.I think she will do it. She is being chased. The two

1:24:00 > 1:24:05leaders may have some company in the not too distant future with six laps

1:24:05 > 1:24:15to go. It is a long time in a race like this. Here they come. Archibald

1:24:15 > 1:24:28is flying. She is having to dig in and chase to close the gap.

1:24:28 > 1:24:29and chase to close the gap. Katie Archibald is still chasing, and I

1:24:29 > 1:24:36think she is finding it tough.

1:24:36 > 1:24:39think she is finding it tough. She hasn't given up, one kilometre to

1:24:39 > 1:24:45go.I tell you who else is not too far behind, the Belgian, and she has

1:24:45 > 1:24:54company as well.

1:24:54 > 1:25:00company as well. I think they're starting to close in. Archibald is

1:25:00 > 1:25:09in second place, about to be joined now by the Polish rider. She joins

1:25:09 > 1:25:21her, this is looking good.I think she will take it. She has done a

1:25:21 > 1:25:28great job, Morton but it is too far to go.Here is Wild for the

1:25:28 > 1:25:32Netherlands with one lap to go. Is the first gold medal going to go to

1:25:32 > 1:25:38the Dutch? The hosts of the world Championships, she knows it's now

1:25:38 > 1:25:47and she comes into the finishing straight and ten two is world

1:25:47 > 1:25:53champion again just as she was in 2015, she takes the world title,

1:25:53 > 1:25:58what a ride from Wild. She timed her effort superbly and what a stop to

1:25:58 > 1:26:02these championships for the hosts. It took some courage because

1:26:02 > 1:26:09everybody had to change their game plan.

1:26:09 > 1:26:14plan. We are all thinking about the sprint, it's seven laps to go and it

1:26:14 > 1:26:20was Archibald who sparked it off. Wild spotted the danger, and hats

1:26:20 > 1:26:24off to her, she committed to the move and had the legs to

1:26:24 > 1:26:25off to her, she committed to the move and had the legs to see it to

1:26:25 > 1:26:28the end. What a great way to start these championships for the

1:26:28 > 1:26:34Netherlands.Yes, and if it can finish like this, it is very great.

1:26:34 > 1:26:38The people, they pushed us, it is incredible how much energy you get

1:26:38 > 1:26:46from the people. When the race got going properly with 12 laps to go,

1:26:46 > 1:26:53the Irish rider weight, Katie Archibald, you knew you had to go.I

1:26:53 > 1:27:00was surprised she wasn't directly on the wheel. Yes, this was incredible.

1:27:00 > 1:27:11My coach was saying go, go, go. I thought it was crazy.Wild, a hugely

1:27:11 > 1:27:19popular winner here. Now the men's keirin final, who could forget Wang

1:27:19 > 1:27:24of Malaysia winning it last year? Keep didn't make it into this year's

1:27:24 > 1:27:31final but Jack Carlin dead. -- did.

1:27:31 > 1:27:33Keep didn't make it into this year's final but Jack Carlin dead. -- did.

1:27:33 > 1:27:38They start at 30 K an hour, they cannot pass the front we love the

1:27:38 > 1:27:43by, they must start in the order they draw. They can swap places.

1:27:43 > 1:27:53They must stay within ten metres of the bike. The Colombian in the blue

1:27:53 > 1:28:04was second in Hong Kong. Wang, not able to defend his title. We will

1:28:04 > 1:28:07have a new champion, come what may.

1:28:12 > 1:28:22For .5 laps to go. Another lap and a half...

1:28:32 > 1:28:38Jack Carlin laying off a bit. Going to start to accelerate early. Half a

1:28:38 > 1:28:43lap before the motorbike comes off, he's on the outside.Has to time it

1:28:43 > 1:28:49well, cannot overlap the motorbike. Beautifully done, straight into pole

1:28:49 > 1:28:54position. He will try to take this one from the front. He is at the

1:28:54 > 1:29:03front of the race.

1:29:03 > 1:29:06front of the race. Just on the inside, there is Carlin. Boxed in at

1:29:06 > 1:29:12the moment, fighting his way out of it with riders going around the

1:29:12 > 1:29:23outside. Here they come now, the sprint being led... Now the

1:29:23 > 1:29:36Colombian! Great Britain have work to do! Over the line, Puertas, world

1:29:36 > 1:29:43champion this time and look at what it means to him.

1:29:46 > 1:29:54Puerta take it on the line.Carlin was out accelerated. Found himself

1:29:54 > 1:30:00trapped down the bottom. Nowhere for him to go. And he just rode that one

1:30:00 > 1:30:07out, in the wheels. No room to race at all.

1:30:09 > 1:30:16The Japanese rider wins the silver. There is confirmation of the result.

1:30:16 > 1:30:20To the women's Omnium and Great Britain are the defending champions

1:30:20 > 1:30:24in this one after Katie Archibald's dramatic victory in Hong Kong. Mixed

1:30:24 > 1:30:28form means the ride goes to Elinor Barker. In the first event the

1:30:28 > 1:30:32scratch race a crash involving a rider and official meant racing was

1:30:32 > 1:30:36significantly delayed. Eventually the last 15 laps were rerun and

1:30:36 > 1:30:44Barker finished in seventh position behind home favourite Welte. In the

1:30:44 > 1:30:48second discipline the first rider across the line gets a point. Barker

1:30:48 > 1:30:51showed her strength here, gaining seven points to win this and leave

1:30:51 > 1:30:55her in second overall. The ehimration was only just under

1:30:55 > 1:31:03way when a huge crash took out a huge group of riders, including

1:31:03 > 1:31:07Elinor Barker. Some riders were unable to continue Barker picked

1:31:07 > 1:31:11herself up and got back on as the race restarted after a lengthy

1:31:11 > 1:31:20delay. Barker trying to make sure he

1:31:20 > 1:31:26doesn't get caught out. This could be tricky here for Elinor Barker,

1:31:26 > 1:31:31she is in a big sprint. She is in trouble. She is gone. She is out.

1:31:31 > 1:31:34Lost out in the sprint there. The Japanese rider had that burst of

1:31:34 > 1:31:46pace at the end of that lap. That is quite a blow.We have high

1:31:46 > 1:31:54quality five left with the Dane, the Belgian, the darker blue, the

1:31:54 > 1:31:57Italian and the American on the outside. The 23-year-old from San

1:31:57 > 1:32:06Diego. Multiple World Champion in the team

1:32:06 > 1:32:12pursuit.

1:32:12 > 1:32:18pursuit.Cop I can was the last one over the line. -- Kopeki has got a

1:32:18 > 1:32:22power metre on her handlebar, up covered up. You are not supposed to

1:32:22 > 1:32:27be able to do that. Actually get feedback during the race. Good spot.

1:32:27 > 1:32:35Eagle eye.

1:32:35 > 1:32:44Eagle eye. Valente in the rear position of the four. Kirsten looks

1:32:44 > 1:32:51strong, she can dominate this. Valente looks comfortable with her

1:32:51 > 1:32:55situation. She looks like she has more to give.We will find out in 25

1:32:55 > 1:33:01seconds. We are getting to the business end of the race. We are

1:33:01 > 1:33:05used to seeing Laura Kenny involved in this race, but not this time.

1:33:05 > 1:33:09Not come peel Peting in the Omnium, the Olympic champion. -- competing.

1:33:09 > 1:33:20. Valente is in third. This is a sprint lap. Lap. Wield difficult to

1:33:20 > 1:33:29get past. Balsamo will finish third in this event. We are left with

1:33:29 > 1:33:35Valente. Home crowd are loving it. A sizeable crowd tonight, here in

1:33:35 > 1:33:41Apeldoorn, we are about an hour from Amsterdam, here comes the big final

1:33:41 > 1:33:46sprint. The final sprint. Sprint. Wield is going to lead it out. And

1:33:46 > 1:33:53the sprint is on now, half way down the back straight. Valente stuck to

1:33:53 > 1:33:58her wheel. Has she got the strength only do past, there is your answer.

1:33:58 > 1:34:03She wins the event and continues to show sparkling form here at these

1:34:03 > 1:34:11World Championships. So after a brave performance in the

1:34:11 > 1:34:15elimination race backer is in third position overall. Still in with a

1:34:15 > 1:34:21chance a medal. The first two in the overall

1:34:21 > 1:34:28standings side by side Willed followed by the yellow jersey.

1:34:28 > 1:34:33Willed has some work to do now. She would be happy for the points to

1:34:33 > 1:34:39go up the road. That would suit her just find. Sure enough the attacking

1:34:39 > 1:34:45starts.It is Splintered completely the race, none of them are overall

1:34:45 > 1:34:53threats.If she wants to ride she can't on the wheel. This isn't just

1:34:53 > 1:34:59the person she has to beat, she has to take points.

1:34:59 > 1:35:09So on the attack the Irish rider with Kopecky the length of a

1:35:09 > 1:35:15straight is the advantage. So Kopecky... No, we only have the one

1:35:15 > 1:35:23sprint left, so no, it is not going to work for these two.

1:35:26 > 1:35:30The screen is saying ten, the board is the centre is saying eight to go.

1:35:30 > 1:35:38Seven this time.We are at the business end. Kopecky at the front.

1:35:38 > 1:35:48The focus is on those behind. That is where the medals will be decided.

1:35:48 > 1:35:58It won't affect the standings in any big way. Wild leads. The Dane

1:35:58 > 1:36:05second, Buchanan third on 106. Balsamo is just behind. There is six

1:36:05 > 1:36:13and four off for the, on offer for the peloton. They will be Hoovering

1:36:13 > 1:36:18up the lion's share of the points at the end. End. Wild will be ready to

1:36:18 > 1:36:21buy them a beer after this event. The wind up starts now. Five laps to

1:36:21 > 1:36:28go.

1:36:28 > 1:36:35go.Valente trying to get on the wheel of Wild. That is Balsamo, she

1:36:35 > 1:36:40is just off the podium. Three points off. Buchanan from New Zealand, a

1:36:40 > 1:36:46bit further back, the traditional all black colours. Colours. Wild is

1:36:46 > 1:36:51staying over the top. She makes sure she has her boxed in.Coming round

1:36:51 > 1:36:59the offside.Wild just managed to get round her there. That was a bit

1:36:59 > 1:37:07tight up at the back.Keeping her pinned on the inside. A very clever

1:37:07 > 1:37:10piece of riding but Wild.Elinor Barker on the front at the moment.

1:37:10 > 1:37:15Now they are just beginning to wind it up. There will be two laps to go

1:37:15 > 1:37:21over the line next time. Lydia at the front with Kopecky. It will be a

1:37:21 > 1:37:24long sprint here and Elinor Barker is right at the front, at the

1:37:24 > 1:37:29moment. Everybody lined up behind her.

1:37:29 > 1:37:34Kopecky has taken the bell but the big sprint is on now. And Elinor

1:37:34 > 1:37:37Barker is on the front of it for Great Britain. Barker leads the way.

1:37:37 > 1:37:45Way. Wild is on her shoulder now. Wild is about to go sweeping past.

1:37:45 > 1:37:53And on her wheel as well is Balsamo from Italy and Valente. Here comes

1:37:53 > 1:37:58Wild up and over the line. She celebrates as do the vast majority

1:37:58 > 1:38:03of the people inside the stadium here, in Apeldoorn, a second world

1:38:03 > 1:38:08title of the week for Kerr stem Wild.

1:38:08 > 1:38:13-- Kirsten. Of all the riders in the race she is the one with the staying

1:38:13 > 1:38:18power, she is the one with the experience, having previously

1:38:18 > 1:38:23finished second and twice third, she is the World Champion in the Omnium.

1:38:23 > 1:38:30Third World title of her career. What a fight back by Buchanan, for

1:38:30 > 1:38:34two lap gains to get herself on the podium. I shows how weighted towards

1:38:34 > 1:38:41this final event it is now. And what a week for Kirsten Wild.

1:38:41 > 1:38:51She takes the world title ahead of the Dane, Buchanan in third place.

1:38:51 > 1:39:00Kopecky took that final sprint. Wild third. Great ride for Buchanan to

1:39:00 > 1:39:07bring herself back on to the podium, and Balsamo finishing fourth, Elinor

1:39:07 > 1:39:11Barker was in sixth place. Just a few points from getting a

1:39:11 > 1:39:13medal.

1:39:13 > 1:39:16Just a few points from getting a medal.

1:39:16 > 1:39:19What a fantastic victory, a second rainbow jersey here, just how much

1:39:19 > 1:39:25did you enjoy that here this evening?Yes it is fantastic to race

1:39:25 > 1:39:30in front of all these people. I feel amazing.First and foremost,

1:39:30 > 1:39:35Eleanor, how are you feeling after that horrible crash?I feel OK. Yes,

1:39:35 > 1:39:39think it was more of a shock, I haven't had a crash for about three

1:39:39 > 1:39:44years I think. Been very lucky. It is not as bad as I thought it was

1:39:44 > 1:39:52going to be. I have a few cuts and bruises and stuff. I have had a

1:39:52 > 1:39:57problem with my suit.It looked a really sore one because you came the

1:39:57 > 1:40:01long way down on the the track. You know, our hearts were in our mouths

1:40:01 > 1:40:05wondering if you would get back up, was there ever a doubt?I don't

1:40:05 > 1:40:11know. I wasn't really thinking about it to be honest. It is such a shock

1:40:11 > 1:40:14you don't know which way you have fallen. The world spins for a second

1:40:14 > 1:40:18and then you are on floor. I was grateful. I curled up in a ball and

1:40:18 > 1:40:23thought people were going to hit the back of me. I was lucky, I have a

1:40:23 > 1:40:28few cuts and graze, not really any splinters.Look back over the

1:40:28 > 1:40:31Omnium, you put yourself new a really strong position, you gave

1:40:31 > 1:40:37yourself a chance here.Yes, it was a bit of a surprise, I wasn't

1:40:37 > 1:40:42supposed to doing this, Kate was supposed to be racing. I only found

1:40:42 > 1:40:45out yesterday afternoon, so I have exceeded my expectations because I

1:40:45 > 1:40:50was in the rankings but I feel a bit gutted, I had bad luck, I put myself

1:40:50 > 1:40:55in a good position going into the points race and had nothing, which

1:40:55 > 1:40:58happens sometimes but I wasn't planning on doing the Omnium, I

1:40:58 > 1:41:03didn't plan to do multiple races in a day, I have just been training for

1:41:03 > 1:41:07one raze race, so I yes, happy as I can be with it considering

1:41:07 > 1:41:14everything.So a hugely entertaining and highly entertaining competitive

1:41:14 > 1:41:19three day, what has impressed you in the opening days of of the World

1:41:19 > 1:41:24Championships?The health of the sport quite political but to see the

1:41:24 > 1:41:30medals spread round is good. There is a lot of competitive nations. It

1:41:30 > 1:41:35gets interest in the sport, I think on that note seeing Wild within the

1:41:35 > 1:41:39Omnium and strongly finishing it to take the last sprint there there

1:41:39 > 1:41:43from the bunch. That was great to watch. It has been a tremendous

1:41:43 > 1:41:48performance from the Dutch so far at these World Championships, what has

1:41:48 > 1:41:53impressed you so farFor men to get that close to the world on a track

1:41:53 > 1:41:58that is not that great, the air pressure was high, no weak links in

1:41:58 > 1:42:02that team, they will be a really strong team come Tokyo in two years'

1:42:02 > 1:42:08time. Puerta in the Kirrin, he has come close before, for a small

1:42:08 > 1:42:12nation to win a gold medal, that was great to see. From a British

1:42:12 > 1:42:16perspective, not a bad opening few days.Really good. It is an

1:42:16 > 1:42:19encouraging performance so far. A this point in the Championship, at

1:42:19 > 1:42:22this point in the Olympic cycle there is a lot to be happy about.

1:42:22 > 1:42:26There is great stand out performance, some new blood coming

1:42:26 > 1:42:31into the team, so I think the coaches will be happy but there is

1:42:31 > 1:42:38more to come.Do you agree with that Chris?Yes. ? Meddling across

1:42:38 > 1:42:43virtually all the discipline, being in the hunt, think they are better

1:42:43 > 1:42:49than they normally are two years out from an Olympic cycle. We will catch

1:42:49 > 1:42:53up with him later. That is all from us here for the moment. The live

1:42:53 > 1:42:59action continues here tonight with the highlight the women's madison,

1:42:59 > 1:43:03Chris Boardman joins Simon to take you through that on the Red Button.

1:43:03 > 1:43:14We he will be back for live coverage tomorrow and a look back at tonight.

1:43:14 > 1:43:16And the indoor athletics championships in Birmingham. Gabby

1:43:16 > 1:43:20and the team are here from BBC Two. Plenty of reasons to stay indoors

1:43:20 > 1:43:25the and in the warm. From all of us here in Apeldoorn, see you tomorrow.

1:43:25 > 1:43:35Bye for now.
