:00:56. > :00:58.future. Get ready to see whether our young athletes can turn their dreams
:00:59. > :01:03.into glory as they take to the Olympic stage. This is what is
:01:04. > :01:07.coming up in the next hour: Britain has a great tradition in triathlon.
:01:08. > :01:16.Can the new generation follow in some illustrious footsteps? We take
:01:17. > :01:23.a look to the local market for some Team GB food with a difference. I do
:01:24. > :01:30.not know what happened but I did not like it one bit! Ever wondered what
:01:31. > :01:36.happens away from the competition, find out with an access all areas
:01:37. > :01:41.passed to the athletes village. And the Team GB swimmers get some good
:01:42. > :01:47.ad vice from one of the sports superstars. British triathlon is on
:01:48. > :01:50.top of the world at the moment, one of the biggest participation sports
:01:51. > :01:57.in the country and with the Brownlie brothers, Jody Stimpson and Helen
:01:58. > :02:01.Jenkins leading the way, it's no surprised they have inspired a
:02:02. > :02:07.generation. We caught up with the athletes ahead of the first event of
:02:08. > :02:17.the games. Siano Aynsley had the honour of being the first Team GB
:02:18. > :02:21.athletes to compete. -- Sian Rainsley.
:02:22. > :02:28.ATMOSPHERIC MUSIC I think, Sian Rainsley, she is right
:02:29. > :02:32.in the mix. She wanted to get a strong swim and make sure she was in
:02:33. > :02:38.the mix when it got to the bike, she has done that, good start. DANCE
:02:39. > :03:01.MUSIC. Eighth place, a great results, well
:03:02. > :03:06.done. Are you happy, it is over, or happy with the performance? My aim
:03:07. > :03:13.was to get top ten because I was only fifth rank in Europe, I have
:03:14. > :03:19.overachieved, very chuffed. From what you saw the race, how will you
:03:20. > :03:23.take it tomorrow? Swimming is not the strongest com I will have to
:03:24. > :03:30.bridge across, it is quite a technical course. I am looking
:03:31. > :03:34.forward to that, some technical parts, there is an overpass, you
:03:35. > :03:38.have to be careful of and a dead turn, that is where the bike
:03:39. > :03:42.handling skills will come into play, the weather, it is quite damp,
:03:43. > :03:47.similar to British weather, we should be all right.
:03:48. > :03:57.Nervous morning? Very nervous morning, very exciting. Something we
:03:58. > :04:01.have been looking forward to, the 17 months really. Yeah, now is the
:04:02. > :04:06.time. We will see in about an hour. What has happened.
:04:07. > :04:19.DRAMATIC MUSIC you are happy? I think so, I swam quite well, 23
:04:20. > :04:23.seconds down on the one, it is a big group, you should be able to get the
:04:24. > :04:26.attachment and hopefully if they come together and they finish as one
:04:27. > :04:33.big group, you should be able to finish well. Even with the 23 second
:04:34. > :04:37.gap, he can recover? Yeah, I'm positive, unless something goes
:04:38. > :04:50.wrong on the bike, he can. DRAMATIC MUSIC SHOUTING
:04:51. > :05:08.Fantastic! It is so good, so good! Very happy, yes, yes! CHEERING
:05:09. > :05:20.Oh! Go on, go on Dave, go on Ben. Take it easy, go on, yes, go Ben. It
:05:21. > :05:25.is a penalty? It is a penalty. If he has got a penalty, you are confident
:05:26. > :05:31.he could kick on? It will be difficult, we'll see. What have you
:05:32. > :05:36.heard? He doesn't have a penalty, I hope I do not have him worried, we
:05:37. > :05:47.will see what happens! ATMOSPHERIC MUSIC
:05:48. > :06:01.Go on Ben, go on, come on! Ben, Ben, Ben, Ben, go, go, go! Come on! Come
:06:02. > :06:13.on. Yes! LAUGHTER Yes. I could kiss you! LAUGHTER
:06:14. > :06:17.ATMOSPHERIC MUSIC For the Spectator, an incredible
:06:18. > :06:22.race, but for you, you couldn't have gone through much more. It was so
:06:23. > :06:26.close, it would have been nice to have a bigger margin, but it is the
:06:27. > :06:31.race and anything can happen, it was so close. Talked us through the
:06:32. > :06:40.transition from bike to run, things went crazy? I crashed into two
:06:41. > :06:44.peoples bikes, I had to the gap. How will you enjoyed a moment on the
:06:45. > :06:48.podium? It will be fantastic, standing with the British flag will
:06:49. > :06:52.be amazing. There was further success, when he led team Europe to
:06:53. > :07:00.the gold medal in the mixed team competition. And for Sian Rainsley,
:07:01. > :07:05.winning the Silver 14 Europe three. This is the second Youth Olympics,
:07:06. > :07:08.the first was held in Singapore, in 2010 and for some it proved to be a
:07:09. > :07:18.springboard for success, at London 2012. He is a little pocket
:07:19. > :07:24.battleship of determination, Jade Jones, from North Wales. You little
:07:25. > :07:24.beauty! The teenage kicking superstar from North Wales,
:07:25. > :07:32.Jones, from North Wales. You little beauty! The teenage she's the
:07:33. > :07:38.Olympic champion! This is lovely swinging, he is working beyond his
:07:39. > :07:45.years. What an incredible moment! CHEERING
:07:46. > :07:46.This is what you have worked for four whole decade, good luck, Tom
:07:47. > :07:50.Daley. This is what you have worked for
:07:51. > :07:55.four whole decade, good Listen to that noise. Tom Daley,
:07:56. > :08:05.bronze-medallist, ten-metre platform. It is amazing to think how
:08:06. > :08:09.quickly Tom, Sam, and Jade made the transition from junior to senior
:08:10. > :08:11.competition. There was another young champion who made a big impact in
:08:12. > :08:20.London, who could forget that beautiful boy, the South African
:08:21. > :08:27.superstar, here to pass on his knowledge to the next generation. He
:08:28. > :08:31.won the gold medal at the 2012 Olympics, he is an inspiration to me
:08:32. > :08:35.and the Team GB swimmers, it will be amazing to meet him. It is just the
:08:36. > :08:52.determination, and his technique and everything. Unbelievable. We will do
:08:53. > :08:56.a warm up, and then we will do fly. I do fly. We will race to the other
:08:57. > :09:02.side! ATMOSPHERIC MUSIC
:09:03. > :09:06.In the butterfly I like to focus on my hips and legs, that is what I
:09:07. > :09:16.practice in training, feeling the rhythm. I compare it to dancing. I
:09:17. > :09:22.tend to mess up my feet sometimes, with a half stroke, I need to work
:09:23. > :09:25.on the finish. In training you need to make sure you always, like I say,
:09:26. > :09:30.practice putting your head down at the finish. I always finish hard
:09:31. > :09:34.into the wall, butterfly especially, people are jumping their hips. You
:09:35. > :09:36.need to work on your legs at the finish. It is not really your arms,
:09:37. > :09:39.need to work on your legs at the finish. It is not really your it is
:09:40. > :09:48.your legs at the end. So... COMMENTATOR: My goodness me, Chad
:09:49. > :09:54.LeClos winning the gold medal. Look what it means! The biggest honour is
:09:55. > :09:59.to wear the South African Capcom I am sure it is same for your guys,
:10:00. > :10:03.Team GB. Dashed to wear the cap, it is a great feeling. You wear it with
:10:04. > :10:16.pride. You are worried about any of us? You
:10:17. > :10:21.have to keep your eyes open. Four years ago nobody knew who I was
:10:22. > :10:24.going into London. Getting a chance of winning the medal in the
:10:25. > :10:30.butterfly. There are a lot of youngsters here, around the world,
:10:31. > :10:34.thinking I want to beat him. I have got to be on my game and keep
:10:35. > :10:47.practising hard. Watching out for you guys. Any ideas about rituals
:10:48. > :10:51.before the race? Sometimes, I have a lucky charm from my brother, it is
:10:52. > :10:55.not something in particular. It is a little something I always carry with
:10:56. > :11:00.me before the race. I do the same warm up routine. Usually I like
:11:01. > :11:07.looking at my competitors before I swim. I don't know why. CHUCKLES
:11:08. > :11:15.That's something I've always done but otherwise it is the same old
:11:16. > :11:20.same old. Thank you so much for being here, and spending time with
:11:21. > :11:25.Team GB, how important is this for the proper Olympics as a warm up? It
:11:26. > :11:28.is very important as a warm up preparation, like I say, it prepared
:11:29. > :11:32.me the things I was not used to. Come here and to be on the big
:11:33. > :11:38.stage, looking at the stadium it is quite big. Bigger than most of the
:11:39. > :11:45.youngsters have, you know, seen before, to get a bit of a taste
:11:46. > :11:54.Andres Romero saw for Rio? -- to get a taster for Rio. What got you into
:11:55. > :12:00.the pool? It was my dad actually, he got me into the water. I used to
:12:01. > :12:03.say, stop it dad. The first time I swam, I was really young. I think
:12:04. > :12:18.everything goes back to him, yeah. Well it looks like his advice paid
:12:19. > :12:28.off, the women's four x 100 medley team of Jessica Fullalove, Georgina
:12:29. > :12:34.Evans, Charlotte Atkinson and Amelia Morne had success in the pool.
:12:35. > :12:39.Jessica also had success in other events. I was saying, don't give in,
:12:40. > :12:46.you are from the north, man up, kind of thing. I just dug in that little
:12:47. > :12:58.bit more. I could have got the gold. It was good enough Al say. There was
:12:59. > :13:01.team gold for Team GB in the four x 100 m freestyle relay, a fabulous
:13:02. > :13:06.swim from the British quartet which saw them finish ahead of Italy and
:13:07. > :13:10.Germany. We knew we had the confidence, we came out of the
:13:11. > :13:14.European Juniors, we knew we were fast this season. We have high
:13:15. > :13:20.confidence going into it and we stepped up to the plate and we did a
:13:21. > :13:23.great job. We have been competing together for quite awhile now, yeah,
:13:24. > :13:29.we know each other really well, it really helps when it comes the
:13:30. > :13:31.relay. We rate each other. Luke Greenbank also went on to take the
:13:32. > :13:45.bronze in the 200 metre backstroke. Here we are, the Youth Olympics
:13:46. > :13:53.Village, home away from home to over 200 computing nations and more than
:13:54. > :13:57.3500 athletes. -- competing nations. Team GB, after a days travelling
:13:58. > :14:08.have found themselves a long way from home, let's get a flavour of
:14:09. > :14:15.things. Good luck. Smile. It is nice to have that kind of support. Treat
:14:16. > :14:18.the flag bearer right! On the plane somebody said who is she, somebody
:14:19. > :14:27.says, she's the boss and I thought, my goodness, I am. Nothing, in
:14:28. > :14:36.relation to your culinary skills. I have cooked nothing self but I will
:14:37. > :14:44.give it a go! . This is a real privilege. Letting us into the hide
:14:45. > :14:51.of the Youth Olympic Games. So, will you show me around? Yes, come on in.
:14:52. > :14:56.Zbl Basic! Roomy. You could do some exercise here!
:14:57. > :15:00.What a group you have got. Diverse, multi-skilled, multi-sports?
:15:01. > :15:05.Absolutely. Lots of them in ones, twos, they have had to mix to get to
:15:06. > :15:12.know each other. It is brilliant to see at this age. 15 to 18 years old
:15:13. > :15:16.it is quite a span from 15 to 18. But they are getting on really well.
:15:17. > :15:19.Helping each other, sporting each other.
:15:20. > :15:24.Where does Jake sleep? Here on the left.
:15:25. > :15:29.What a great space. Bright white sheets, well, for now, at least.
:15:30. > :15:33.It must be pretty interesting seeing a group of teenagers coming together
:15:34. > :15:38.all at once and then seeing what happens. What has that been like to
:15:39. > :15:45.see that develop? What could possibly go wrong, hey? ! Very
:15:46. > :15:50.intimate with your roommate? Yes, very close together! I do have to do
:15:51. > :15:55.one thing if you don't mind it is very forward of me. But this is
:15:56. > :16:00.inviting. Can I test the springability? Have a go.
:16:01. > :16:05.I will not jump on it. It may be fragile. But I will just test the
:16:06. > :16:13.waters. That is like a table. Not much give in that, is there? No! A
:16:14. > :16:18.senior event, you may talk about the Commonwealth Games, you talk about
:16:19. > :16:23.medal targets a lot. Do you look at that for these guys? Talking about
:16:24. > :16:28.the targets from a medal perspective or a different level? There is no
:16:29. > :16:33.medal table at this game. So we are not talking about medal targets,
:16:34. > :16:39.make making a medallist feeling different. It is about the
:16:40. > :16:43.experience. Experience is the best performance. We also want them to
:16:44. > :16:45.have a great performance and this really is about learning from the
:16:46. > :16:49.experience. I can see on your face you are
:16:50. > :16:55.looking forward to it. We are looking forward to it. If you don't
:16:56. > :16:58.mind us getting in your way, we are looking for to it with you every
:16:59. > :17:05.step of the way. Great.
:17:06. > :17:11.Thank you for having us! And Jake Saywell took gold as part of Team
:17:12. > :17:14.Europe in the Team Equestrian competition.
:17:15. > :17:24.Also striving for gold, taking on the world and doing so in great
:17:25. > :17:33.style, Nick Hope went along to meet this group... Think of Jamaica, you
:17:34. > :17:40.probably picture Usain Bolt and the lightening bolt Ando had been and
:17:41. > :17:46.the likes, well, you may not have heard these names yet but they are
:17:47. > :17:51.the upand come doing athletes of Jamaica.
:17:52. > :17:55.If you have seen them doing something before the race, it is
:17:56. > :18:00.just because they are nervous. COMMENTATOR: The champion is
:18:01. > :18:05.becoming a legend. I really respect Usain Bolt. A true
:18:06. > :18:11.champion. When I see him do well, I get the goose bumps. I think that
:18:12. > :18:15.can be me in a couple of years. When you see Usain Bolt you want to
:18:16. > :18:19.be better. You can't be someone, as person is made. You must be better
:18:20. > :18:22.than them. Martin Manly is the youth Olympic
:18:23. > :18:26.champion. You cannot explain a Gold Medal. You
:18:27. > :18:32.have to feel it for yourself. But I think that I can be. I know that
:18:33. > :18:38.there are those out there trying to take it too but I have the
:18:39. > :18:42.personality and I have thele pigses. Welcome to the Olympic Stadium. The
:18:43. > :18:52.atmosphere is amazing. The crowd expecting awesome performances.
:18:53. > :18:59.Can he do it? Of course he can. Is the pressure on Jaheel Hyde? You
:19:00. > :19:04.have your gold, he will want one now? There is no pressure on him. I
:19:05. > :19:08.think he is more than phenomenal, he is a great athlete.
:19:09. > :19:12.COMMENTATOR: They are cleanly away. It is Jaheel Hyde with the
:19:13. > :19:16.advantage. He is smiling clear of the rest of the field. In a class of
:19:17. > :19:24.his own. Look at the clock. What is the time?
:19:25. > :19:29.Oh, yes! Inside 13 seconds. How good was that? There is no words to
:19:30. > :19:35.describe that man. Awesome. Wonderful. Excellent.
:19:36. > :19:39.How pleased are you for your team-mate? You both have Gold Medals
:19:40. > :19:44.now? I am very proud of him. He has had a great season. Breaking a lot
:19:45. > :19:50.of records this year. I am very proud of him.
:19:51. > :19:55.The next Usain Bolt? Of course! From the start of the race I knew I was
:19:56. > :20:00.going to get the Gold Medal. Even before the race. I wanted it badly.
:20:01. > :20:05.The plan was to come before 14 seconds.
:20:06. > :20:09.What does Rio mean mean to you? Snow It mean as lot. I have come from
:20:10. > :20:15.far. Sometimes you don't know what you are doing but I have been coming
:20:16. > :20:19.from a long way behind and I am a champion, I want to come back. To
:20:20. > :20:23.come back with a Gold Medal is my main aim.
:20:24. > :20:27.It is what I want to do at the Olympics.
:20:28. > :20:31.Team GB came to China with two athletes of their own. Christian
:20:32. > :20:36.McNeish and Abigail Stones were ready to compete in the often
:20:37. > :20:42.unpredick yackety start of tae kwon do.
:20:43. > :20:51.-- unpredictable sport of tae kwon do.
:20:52. > :20:54.Here we are, then. At the Nanjing Expo Centre, where Abigail Stones is
:20:55. > :20:59.to kick-start her youth Olympic career. She is one of the favourites
:21:00. > :21:07.and there is a lot of nervous energy here. Before coming to China,
:21:08. > :21:10.Abigail Stones got some support from Olympic and tae kwon do champion,
:21:11. > :21:15.Jade Jones. When I went I did not know what to
:21:16. > :21:22.expect. But it is definitely the real Olympics. It was amazing.
:21:23. > :21:28.How was the pressure and how did you deal with it? Yeah, I did feel
:21:29. > :21:32.pressure. But when I got there, I realised it was amazing even to be
:21:33. > :21:36.there. So just try to enjoy the experience. Realise that the
:21:37. > :21:42.pressures are those that you put on yourself. You can only do your best.
:21:43. > :21:47.In tae kwon do anything can happen. You have to focus on your plan. What
:21:48. > :21:51.you can do in the ring. What are your hopes for the Youth Olympics? I
:21:52. > :21:58.want to go out there and I do want to get a medal but to go out there
:21:59. > :22:04.and do my best. I want to enjoy the experience and give it 100%.
:22:05. > :22:08.So, can Abigail Stones enjoy the experience? We are about to find
:22:09. > :22:18.out. She has made it into the semi-final.
:22:19. > :22:24.Next a fight for the Gold Medal. The first round of three. Done and
:22:25. > :22:39.dusted and Abi leads by 2-0. Looking good but a long way to go in the
:22:40. > :22:44.semi-final. Well, that is half of the lead taken
:22:45. > :22:48.away. She is still in there. She is still very, very close from being a
:22:49. > :22:52.step away from the youth Olympic Gold Medal. But that round was a
:22:53. > :23:07.little more cagey than the first. She is getting us nervous up here in
:23:08. > :23:11.the stands. Hopefully she can turn the shrieks into points. Now she is
:23:12. > :23:27.trailing. That is not good. Not good. Come on, Abi, come on! Oh! She
:23:28. > :23:32.is absolutely gutted. You feel for her, you really feel
:23:33. > :23:37.for her. She has a Bronze Medal. But it is not what she came to China
:23:38. > :23:43.for. Her and her team knew she had it in her to win the youth Olympic
:23:44. > :23:47.gold. So to come away with it winning a Bronze Medal it is not a
:23:48. > :23:51.bad result. But she knew in herself she was going for gold.
:23:52. > :23:55.I trade my best. There is nothing else that I could have done. I was
:23:56. > :24:00.trying things but basically we fight the same. We could not get around
:24:01. > :24:05.each other's legs. It was hard. It was not the result I wanted.
:24:06. > :24:09.You got a Bronze Medal. I know it is not what you came to take away but
:24:10. > :24:13.what can you take from the experience? The experience was
:24:14. > :24:22.amazing. There is more to come in the next few weeks. Reflect on what
:24:23. > :24:28.happened here and improve on the next performance whenever that is.
:24:29. > :24:31.Well, you may not think it but you have done Liverpool proud and you
:24:32. > :24:42.have done Great Britain proud as well.
:24:43. > :24:49.And Christian matched his partner to bring home another Bronze Medal for
:24:50. > :24:55.Team GB. I have come to meet 15-year-old Ellie Downie to find out
:24:56. > :24:59.how she is settling here in Nanjing and more importantly, to find out
:25:00. > :25:05.what she wants to achieve from her Olympic debut.
:25:06. > :25:09.Ellie, what is it like to be here in Nanjing ready for the Olympic Games?
:25:10. > :25:14.I know it has been a while. But it is great to be here.
:25:15. > :25:17.You came off the back of an incredible European Championships,
:25:18. > :25:22.how does it make you feel going into the Games? Confident but nervous. I
:25:23. > :25:27.had a few skills in the routines that could hit or miss. The bars, I
:25:28. > :25:31.missed a bit today. I am hoping to improve on that.
:25:32. > :25:35.I know that your sister is a massive inspiration. So we thought we would
:25:36. > :25:40.show you something to give you a final push. There are a few other
:25:41. > :25:45.faces to recognise. Check it out. If she is going the way she should,
:25:46. > :25:50.I have no reason to think she will not be better than me when it comes
:25:51. > :25:58.to seniors. I have known it for a long time. Ellie has done so well.
:25:59. > :26:02.If she continues and stays injury-free, she could be one of the
:26:03. > :26:06.best in the world. Who knows, watch this space.
:26:07. > :26:12.Ellie went on to win four medals. Three bronze on the floor, beam, and
:26:13. > :26:20.in the all round final and a silver in the vault. And team-mate Giarnni
:26:21. > :26:25.Regini-Moran took two medals in the high bar and the parallel bars and
:26:26. > :26:29.an amazing three golds in the vault and in the all round final.
:26:30. > :26:33.COMMENTATOR: It is good. It is great.
:26:34. > :26:39.Congratulations, how does it feel coming off the back of what has been
:26:40. > :26:44.an incredibly successful Youth Olympics games for you? Amazing.
:26:45. > :26:49.Knowing that I have put six weeks of hard work and dedication into the
:26:50. > :26:53.training. Now knowing that the competition is down done, I have
:26:54. > :26:58.walked away with five medals. It is the best feeling in the world.
:26:59. > :27:03.How do you describe your style when you perform? What is different about
:27:04. > :27:07.you to other gymnasts? I am trying to be cool, calm and confident. When
:27:08. > :27:13.I have a smile I know that I have done the best routine. Even if I
:27:14. > :27:18.don't get a medal I know I have given it 100%.
:27:19. > :27:24.There has been so much success evenly, how do you feel to be a part
:27:25. > :27:30.of the new wave of British gymnasts? Amazing. Since 2012, the boys
:27:31. > :27:33.getting bronze. And everyone from Team GB, just moving forwards and
:27:34. > :27:38.getting more medals than ever. I know that the competition has
:27:39. > :27:45.ended for you but I thought that we should try a brand new sport. How do
:27:46. > :27:59.you feel about Wooshu? Sounds great. Shall we give it a go? Yeah.
:28:00. > :28:31.Unbelievable. What did you make of that?
:28:32. > :28:36.Physically and mentally frustrating! Sticking to the gymnasts for Rio
:28:37. > :28:39.2016, I like it. Yes.
:28:40. > :28:43.Well, congratulations on what has been a phenomenal year for you. Well
:28:44. > :28:49.done. Here at the Youth Olympic Games there is a host of athlete
:28:50. > :28:55.role models on hand to give advice on all aspects of sports. But
:28:56. > :29:14.sometimes there is a closer wisdom at home. It does help if he is a
:29:15. > :29:19.sporting legend in his own right. As an ex-athlete, Seb, how difficult
:29:20. > :29:24.is it to make the transition from juniors to sisters. And how much
:29:25. > :29:31.will this experience help these guys? I don't want to put them off
:29:32. > :29:35.but they will know this from their coaches, going from the juniors to
:29:36. > :29:40.the senior is the toughest part of the journey. Tougher than almost at
:29:41. > :29:44.any other stage. The experience here is hugely helpful.
:29:45. > :29:49.What did it feel like to cross the line and know you had won an Olympic
:29:50. > :29:55.gold? It is a fantastic moment. I am guessing that in a way you have
:29:56. > :30:00.probably experienced the same emotions yesterday when you are
:30:01. > :30:04.thinking about the individual effort that's been taken but then also the
:30:05. > :30:10.support of parents, coaches, the staff here. The overwhelming
:30:11. > :30:14.emotions is just being relieved that you did not let those people down.
:30:15. > :30:17.Then you get excited after and realise you did something special.
:30:18. > :30:27.You did that yesterday, congratulations. Is there a way you
:30:28. > :30:30.dealt with nerves? The reality is that you will always be nervous
:30:31. > :30:36.going into races, you need to be under control. For me, I found I was
:30:37. > :30:43.most confident when I knew I had done all of the work which was
:30:44. > :30:48.necessary. How different is junior and senior, and the Youth Olympics
:30:49. > :30:52.to the actual Olympics? I would love to have been to the Youth Olympics
:30:53. > :30:55.games because it would have given me the experience, I would have
:30:56. > :30:58.understood the nature of the Olympic games a little bit more and
:30:59. > :31:02.championship competition had I been through one of these. To answer your
:31:03. > :31:06.first question, I guess, I think it is the toughest journey you will
:31:07. > :31:12.make from being a good junior competitor into a regular senior,
:31:13. > :31:19.hopefully international compared to the. Is there anything you would
:31:20. > :31:26.like to ask him, a chance you may never have again? How did you cope
:31:27. > :31:30.with media pressures, pressures from other people when you have won one
:31:31. > :31:37.gold medal, to turn up and achieve again and defend titles and stuff?
:31:38. > :31:40.Sometimes the easy bit is actually getting there and the hard bit, is
:31:41. > :31:45.sort of sitting back, and saying, OK, I will start again. And do
:31:46. > :31:49.another four years. You cannot think I have won an Olympic title and
:31:50. > :31:53.therefore the next four years will be a doddle. More pressures come
:31:54. > :31:59.with it. And I guess again, the experience of being here will also
:32:00. > :32:08.begin to give you a feeling for some of those media pressures. Let me ask
:32:09. > :32:15.you, slightly diplomatic question. A cynic might say four years ago, 39
:32:16. > :32:20.athletes, four years later, only 33. They might say, not quite inspiring
:32:21. > :32:24.a generation. They are proving it does work, but can you see a future,
:32:25. > :32:30.where this is progressing because the numbers decreasing might not
:32:31. > :32:33.suggested. It is not simply about numbers, it is the quality,
:32:34. > :32:38.potential, selection is not simply just about sending the biggest
:32:39. > :32:42.teams. It is about sending people that will be mentally and physically
:32:43. > :32:49.ready to do that, you cannot send people into competition to early.
:32:50. > :32:52.What I would say is that this is an extraordinary generation of young
:32:53. > :32:58.talent, coming through, there is no reason they should not be there or
:32:59. > :33:01.thereabouts. Maybe Rio, they could be a little undercooked in Rio but
:33:02. > :33:04.certainly by the time Tokyo comes around in six years time, you should
:33:05. > :33:21.all be there. For most of the athletes in Nanjing
:33:22. > :33:24.this is their first taste at multisport event. But there is one
:33:25. > :33:28.swimmer with more experience than most, she has already got a world
:33:29. > :33:39.record and an Olympic medal to her name. She is holding on for little
:33:40. > :33:51.Waimea -- she is holding on, for her country who have never won a gold
:33:52. > :34:02.medal. And she takes the gold medal. Olympic champion aged 15, well done.
:34:03. > :34:07.Well done. She is looking to add the Youth Olympics gold medal, this is
:34:08. > :34:16.her second choice event, we are expecting big things from her.
:34:17. > :34:23.COMMENTATOR: Remarkable start for the world record holder, she's
:34:24. > :34:32.already half body length ahead. She is taking it out hard. She is
:34:33. > :34:40.powering away and she looks supreme. Come on Ruta. She has got it worked
:34:41. > :34:47.out, her flow is awesome, somebody who is only 17, remarkable, this is
:34:48. > :34:53.why she is the record-holder, 30.14, good enough of a gold medal,
:34:54. > :34:57.practically guaranteed. She made it look easy, she drifted through the
:34:58. > :35:01.heats and the semifinals, absolutely powered to the gold medal. She
:35:02. > :35:06.certainly delivered, the gold medal will mean so much to her. This is
:35:07. > :35:18.lame for, where you got your gold medal, what does it mean -- lane for
:35:19. > :35:21.the Little four. It means a lot, I am inspiring people, the national
:35:22. > :35:28.anthem, it is a great experience again. The Youth Olympics, it still
:35:29. > :35:33.means a lot to me. She's driven to be the best she can be, she likes
:35:34. > :35:37.the idea of breaking new ground, when she set the world records last
:35:38. > :35:41.year, she was thrilled with that, she likes the idea of swimming at
:35:42. > :35:49.new tournaments. And making people smile. It is good for the youngsters
:35:50. > :35:55.to experience something like the Olympics, it is very similar. It is
:35:56. > :36:02.part of a preparation. It prepares you for the big thing, it gives you
:36:03. > :36:05.the experience. I guess, with the Youth Olympics, you would be more
:36:06. > :36:12.relaxed when it comes to the real thing. Why was it so important for
:36:13. > :36:19.you, and to her, to be at the Youth Olympics? I think the opportunity to
:36:20. > :36:23.do the competition, the next time she will be too old, we like the
:36:24. > :36:30.idea of winning every medal there is if we can. This is another one in
:36:31. > :36:34.the Cabinet. It shows, even if you are Olympic and world champion,
:36:35. > :36:38.young, you should not be too big for your boots that you cannot represent
:36:39. > :36:45.your country at the junior competition. I think she has shown
:36:46. > :36:50.it is an Arab rubble -- and rubble side
:36:51. > :37:01.do you get people coming and asking for selfies and advice? Yes, more
:37:02. > :37:05.selfies than advice. The girls I swim with, they are always asking
:37:06. > :37:11.for advice, some people might be a bit scared of me, maybe I look
:37:12. > :37:22.moody, or... The game face on. I am always up for a chat. If anybody
:37:23. > :37:27.needs to... I am there. The Youth Olympic Games and not just about
:37:28. > :37:30.sport, athletes can take part in a cultural and education programme
:37:31. > :37:37.where they can learn about injury prevention, sports career planning
:37:38. > :37:45.and how to make films. Before Team GB's judoka team left, we gave them
:37:46. > :37:52.a camera to record their journey. Hello, we are leaving today. Just
:37:53. > :37:59.arrived in Nanjing, how did you find the flight? It was long. What about
:38:00. > :38:02.the combination? Perfect, really, really perfect. This is the opening
:38:03. > :38:22.ceremony... It is massive! ATMOSPHERIC MUSIC
:38:23. > :38:26.Thank you so much for doing some filming and giving us an insight,
:38:27. > :38:31.into what it is like to be the athlete ahead of the big
:38:32. > :38:35.competition. You spend a lot of time in the canteen in the Olympic
:38:36. > :38:39.village, you like to eat, why is it everybody wants to know about the
:38:40. > :38:42.food in the village? As an athlete you need to have a good diet,
:38:43. > :38:46.everybody wants the best preparation, you do not want junk
:38:47. > :38:55.food all the time. Wanted to be nice and healthy. You stay disciplined,
:38:56. > :38:58.Pete? It is important to be having good nutrition, weight control
:38:59. > :39:06.sport, you need good food. It has been OK, better than the food here.
:39:07. > :39:13.Hard to be disciplined, I am sure. We are in the market today, we want
:39:14. > :39:18.to put your filming techniques on test, we want to film some Nanjing
:39:19. > :39:26.delicacies. I am absolutely famished, let's treat the girls for
:39:27. > :39:32.lunch. Let's do the same, we will treat you to lunch. Lunch, Nanjing
:39:33. > :39:40.style! Can you spell it, it looks like it has gone off, wow! It is
:39:41. > :39:46.slippery and slimy. Really slippy. Immediately, Pete, we have got... I
:39:47. > :39:53.have never seen that before in my life. Get a nice close-up on that.
:39:54. > :39:58.It is like mouldy eggs. That has got to be a Trotter, it looks like a
:39:59. > :40:02.foot. CHUCKLES I love Pete, he says it like it is,
:40:03. > :40:09.looks like a foot and probably is a foot. I will hazard a guess, at
:40:10. > :40:14.someone, something 's tongue, do you reckon the girls would fancy that?
:40:15. > :40:21.They would love that, it's right up their street. I have never seen that
:40:22. > :40:30.before. I've never seen anything like that! The power of the
:40:31. > :40:35.judoka... What will they do? There is one the Pete. I think they would
:40:36. > :40:49.like that. -- 14 Pete. I do not know what happened but I
:40:50. > :40:53.didn't like it, not one bit! OK ladies, we're not sure what this was
:40:54. > :41:03.which is why you are here, this is the first offering. Get stuck in.
:41:04. > :41:11.Get it down you. Get it down you! Just imagine it is confectionery.
:41:12. > :41:18.That was honestly disgusting! Turkey on, boys. -- tucked in.
:41:19. > :41:30.I think Pete is feeling sick, but you look all right with that? What
:41:31. > :41:38.came first, the chicken foot or the egg? Stop it. The text is awful but
:41:39. > :41:49.the flavour is not bad. How was that? The fact I know it is a duck
:41:50. > :41:59.'s brain, it is gross. You have some eyeball stuck in your tooth. You
:42:00. > :42:10.don't say that every day. Three, two, one. Oh! I can feel my breath
:42:11. > :42:15.smelling horrible after that! I think we need to get you back to the
:42:16. > :42:23.village for some food you are more used to, come on!
:42:24. > :42:32.DRAMATIC MUSIC it is a hot day but it is a historic day, for the first
:42:33. > :42:37.time in over a century Olympic medals will be awarded in the game
:42:38. > :42:41.of golf and as a precursor to Rio, 2016, this is not a bad setting
:42:42. > :42:48.whatsoever for Great Britain, Annabel was a really big hope. As
:42:49. > :42:52.Britain's highest rank amateur, unfortunately she has been laid low
:42:53. > :42:59.with a back injury, which means the big hope lies with Rob McIntyre.
:43:00. > :43:06.OK, you are not competing, but we have Bob, what you know about his
:43:07. > :43:11.game? Steady as a rock, he hardly misses a fairway which is unusual
:43:12. > :43:16.for a guy. Very calm on the course and relaxed. Very chilled. Part of
:43:17. > :43:21.the excitement is the fact the boys and girls are competing at the same
:43:22. > :43:25.time, it must be a thrill. It is strange, seeing a guy walking down
:43:26. > :43:30.the fairway but it is cool, to see how they play the course, it gives
:43:31. > :43:35.you a different insight. What your friends think when you say you play
:43:36. > :43:40.golf? They think it is an old man sport, and I say, I go to practice
:43:41. > :43:43.every day, they say, do you want to come out, and I said, I'm going to
:43:44. > :43:50.practice and they say again, you went yesterday! Such a great course,
:43:51. > :43:56.such a shame you cannot be competing. Yes, it is one of the
:43:57. > :43:59.decisions you have to make, horrible decision, really horrible. Better
:44:00. > :44:06.for me in the long term, for my career. What has the doctor told me,
:44:07. > :44:09.the diagnosis? I have pulled a ligament in my back which sounds
:44:10. > :44:15.worse than it is. It is not a quick fix. It is a pretty easy one. I just
:44:16. > :44:19.need a lot of treatment and some rest, I need to strengthen other
:44:20. > :44:27.parts of my body, where it has kind of thickened bit.
:44:28. > :44:33.A lot of people might think golf should not be an Olympics, what
:44:34. > :44:37.would you say to them? They need to learn more about golf and watch it
:44:38. > :44:40.more, and see what it is like. It must be good to hear the likes of
:44:41. > :44:47.Phil Mickelson, saying his main goal is to get to reopen? It is cool, it
:44:48. > :44:50.is different because people did not think about that. To get to reopen
:44:51. > :45:09.delete macro Rio de Janeiro. people's perspective on it, for him
:45:10. > :45:15.to say that. I think it will be a really good tournament in Rio.
:45:16. > :45:20.It must have been a shame to lose Annabel so early on? Yes it was a
:45:21. > :45:23.shame. And for the team event it is a disapointment.
:45:24. > :45:35.What do you take from the Games? A lot of from pressure, the heat, the
:45:36. > :45:39.enjoyment of playing against other people from other countries.
:45:40. > :45:42.After this, you could play in a desert! It does not get much hotter
:45:43. > :45:43.than this, does it? No, this is hot! Time to shower down, then! Bob
:45:44. > :45:48.McIntyre it has been a pleasure to watch you.
:45:49. > :45:54.Most athletes here at the Olympic Games have to concentrate on one
:45:55. > :46:05.sport. But the modern athlete must concentrate on five. It is hard to
:46:06. > :46:11.imagine that there is time for anything else.
:46:12. > :46:19.I have come to meet up with some of those students.
:46:20. > :46:24.I am guessing, Henry, that you are not really into fashion? No, I am
:46:25. > :46:26.more of the science type. Is it like to be here in Nanjing,
:46:27. > :46:30.there must have been a build-up in the last few weeks in your head?
:46:31. > :46:35.Yes, training hard, trying not to get injured.
:46:36. > :46:37.What is it like between you and Frankie, she is your training
:46:38. > :46:44.support? Really good. Well, good luck on the day. We know
:46:45. > :46:48.you can do it for Team GB. On a more serious note, have you ever taken
:46:49. > :46:51.part in a Chinese fashion show? Never.
:46:52. > :46:53.You are into fashion, aren't you? Yes.
:46:54. > :47:00.You are about to go to Paris to study? Yes, to the American Academy.
:47:01. > :47:02.Look at these ones, a lot of colour there.
:47:03. > :47:08.Yes. Is Henry trendy? Would you call him
:47:09. > :47:17.fashionable? Yeah, he is pretty trendy. I ware blews and whites, and
:47:18. > :47:19.he dresses that as well, so I am a fan.
:47:20. > :47:24.No. No. Definitely red. Do you think? Yep. That one. Since
:47:25. > :47:28.you have been in, what have you picked up about Chinese fashion? Do
:47:29. > :47:34.you like it? It is different. It is different to the European fashions.
:47:35. > :47:41.Floral. Colourful. I like colourful. There are a lot of great patterns as
:47:42. > :47:44.well? Yes. And lots of sequins in the patterns. We don't have that in
:47:45. > :47:49.England. I think it is quite brave. A lot
:47:50. > :47:54.braver than us. That would suit you. You don't like
:47:55. > :47:59.flowers? No. Fallen at the first hurdle. No. But
:48:00. > :48:06.that suits you. They are fine on other people but on me, a no, no!
:48:07. > :48:11.Don't worry, I am not offended. Out of the whole GB team, is there
:48:12. > :48:17.anyone that you see in their clothes and you think, no? Anyone who is not
:48:18. > :48:23.so trendy? Well, here everyone is wearing the same kit. There are no
:48:24. > :48:28.socks, sandals, so everyone is good. If it was up to you, if it was Gold
:48:29. > :48:34.Medal or a line at Paris Fashion Week, which would you choose? Gold
:48:35. > :48:39.Medal all the way. Pentathlon sport. Is my number one. My passion is
:48:40. > :48:43.fashion. If I could put them together that would be great. But I
:48:44. > :48:48.would go Gold Medal any day! Well, there have been a lot of outfits
:48:49. > :48:54.here with lots of patterns, let's try some on! That is nice. It suits
:48:55. > :49:02.you. I like them. So, Henry? They are OK.
:49:03. > :49:09.So you are not that into fashion? No.
:49:10. > :49:14.And it looks as if Francesca Summers will have difficult decisions to
:49:15. > :49:20.make in the future. A fabulous medal here, a Silver Medal, shows she has
:49:21. > :49:28.a future in both the modern pentathlon as well as fashion.
:49:29. > :49:32.Yulong Cheng had a strong start, finishing in 11th place overall.
:49:33. > :49:40.This may be the second edition of the summer Youth Olympics but the
:49:41. > :49:47.first for IOC President, Tomas Bach. I caught up with him.
:49:48. > :49:52.Tomas, a pleasure for taking the time to meet us. After all of this
:49:53. > :49:58.time and you are finally here, you are here for the first time as the
:49:59. > :50:03.IOC President. How is it shaping up? It is really exciting. You only have
:50:04. > :50:08.to see the smiles in their faces. It has started in a great way.
:50:09. > :50:14.Four years ago I spoke to Anna Rogowska, who said that the Youth
:50:15. > :50:18.Olympic Games were like his baby. So to extend the metaphor, how do you
:50:19. > :50:22.that I that the baby will grow into something special? The first two
:50:23. > :50:29.editions of the Games have been a great success. This is the third. We
:50:30. > :50:35.will wait and see what we can do even better. I don't know yet. But
