0:00:02 > 0:00:06This imposing building behind me can house nearly 2,000 people,
0:00:06 > 0:00:09stock over 40 million bags of sugar
0:00:09 > 0:00:12and hold hundreds of thousands of litres of water.
0:00:12 > 0:00:14So find out why it was built
0:00:14 > 0:00:17and which country I'm in in just a moment.
0:00:37 > 0:00:41Today's potential migrant is an entrepreneur itching to create
0:00:41 > 0:00:44a healthier new life to complement her thriving business.
0:00:44 > 0:00:47- Quick! Can we go and look? - Yeah, keen, keen!
0:00:47 > 0:00:50So, with some support from a close friend, she's banking on finding
0:00:50 > 0:00:55her dream home and a Continental branch to her enterprise.
0:00:55 > 0:00:58- It's exceeded expectations, put it that way.- So pleased!
0:00:58 > 0:01:01All my expectations. It really has, honestly.
0:01:03 > 0:01:06Welcome to Escape To The Continent.
0:01:06 > 0:01:09Today, I'm in Le Marche region in central Italy
0:01:09 > 0:01:11and this is Lazzaretto,
0:01:11 > 0:01:14a stunning building that overlooks the sea and port
0:01:14 > 0:01:18of the capital, Ancona. Commissioned by the Pope,
0:01:18 > 0:01:23it was built nearly 300 years ago as a totally self-sufficient island.
0:01:23 > 0:01:26Its purpose was to provide a quarantined area to protect
0:01:26 > 0:01:29the city from goods and travellers
0:01:29 > 0:01:32that may have been carrying infectious diseases.
0:01:32 > 0:01:37It operated like this for nearly 100 years but since then it's been
0:01:37 > 0:01:42used as a military barracks, a sugar refinery, even a tobacco factory.
0:01:42 > 0:01:45Today, it houses many cultural exhibitions
0:01:45 > 0:01:48hosted by this stunning region.
0:01:50 > 0:01:55Le Marche, or the Marches, lies in the calf of Italy's elegant boot
0:01:55 > 0:01:59with its head in the Apennines and its toes in the Adriatic Sea.
0:02:00 > 0:02:03This lesser-known region of central Italy is made up of coastal
0:02:03 > 0:02:07and mountainous terrain as well as enchanting ancient towns
0:02:07 > 0:02:12and villages that seem to crown every sunny hilltop.
0:02:12 > 0:02:16Right in the heart of the region, the town of Cingoli
0:02:16 > 0:02:18dates back to the third century BC
0:02:18 > 0:02:21and is called the balcony of the Marches
0:02:21 > 0:02:24for its "pinch me" lake views.
0:02:24 > 0:02:26Down in the far southern portion,
0:02:26 > 0:02:31the handsome Ascoli Piceno is known as the city of travertine on account
0:02:31 > 0:02:35of its ancient architecture built of pale limestone.
0:02:36 > 0:02:40With pristine beaches, wild national parks and farm vineyards,
0:02:40 > 0:02:44the rich variety and vivid natural colours of Le Marche
0:02:44 > 0:02:47present themselves like a wonderful landscape painting.
0:02:51 > 0:02:55So how is all this reflected in the property prices?
0:02:55 > 0:02:59Well, the region as a whole offers tremendous value for money.
0:02:59 > 0:03:03If you head north towards Corinaldo, you can find a property there
0:03:03 > 0:03:06for just over £100,000.
0:03:06 > 0:03:10Now, that's less than half the national average back home.
0:03:10 > 0:03:12The most expensive areas are coastal,
0:03:12 > 0:03:15particularly in and around Ancona,
0:03:15 > 0:03:19where house prices there start just below £300,000.
0:03:19 > 0:03:23Let's find out where today's buyer wants to escape to.
0:03:23 > 0:03:26With a prosperous career that has taken her throughout Europe,
0:03:26 > 0:03:29businesswoman Janice is temporarily based at her parents'
0:03:29 > 0:03:33Tyne and Wear home whilst caring for her elderly mother.
0:03:33 > 0:03:36But, with the help of her friend, neighbour and one-time
0:03:36 > 0:03:42English teacher Dorothy, plans are afoot to move back to the Continent.
0:03:42 > 0:03:45Janice was one of my pupils in grammar school.
0:03:45 > 0:03:48After she left school at 18 to go to university,
0:03:48 > 0:03:50we lost touch for a while.
0:03:50 > 0:03:54And I was in the supermarket one day, I bumped into Dorothy
0:03:54 > 0:03:57and it was great to see her and, of course,
0:03:57 > 0:04:01living close by we've forged our friendship since then.
0:04:01 > 0:04:06We do think very much alike on many issues and it's quite amazing
0:04:06 > 0:04:09because there is quite an age gap as well
0:04:09 > 0:04:13and yet we still have this rapport.
0:04:13 > 0:04:17I think maybe she's become a little bogged down in her
0:04:17 > 0:04:21responsibilities to parents and I think now is the time for her
0:04:21 > 0:04:25to have life and to have what she wants in life.
0:04:25 > 0:04:29And what Janice wants is an unspoilt slice of Italy's organic countryside
0:04:29 > 0:04:32that offers a comfortable property with
0:04:32 > 0:04:33commercial appeal.
0:04:33 > 0:04:35After leaving university,
0:04:35 > 0:04:37I joined the pharmaceutical industry in research and development
0:04:37 > 0:04:39and then after a few years moved into
0:04:39 > 0:04:42production and quality assurance roles
0:04:42 > 0:04:45but all the time, you know, underneath was bubbling
0:04:45 > 0:04:47this desire to create my own little business,
0:04:47 > 0:04:50particularly moving into the natural health field.
0:04:50 > 0:04:53The Italians are very much into natural health.
0:04:53 > 0:04:56They have pharmacy shops but they also have herboristerias.
0:04:56 > 0:04:58An Italian person does not go to the doctor,
0:04:58 > 0:05:01they go to the herboristeria first, then they go to the pharmacy
0:05:01 > 0:05:02and THEN they go to the doctor.
0:05:02 > 0:05:05After basing herself in Milan for four years during
0:05:05 > 0:05:08the early noughties doing the ground work,
0:05:08 > 0:05:10Janice made her business dream a reality
0:05:10 > 0:05:13and she now runs a company that offers consumers
0:05:13 > 0:05:16natural alternatives to medicine and healing.
0:05:16 > 0:05:19She'd like to grow her very own raw ingredients
0:05:19 > 0:05:21and has chosen Le Marche region
0:05:21 > 0:05:24because of its high concentration of organic farms,
0:05:24 > 0:05:26but, with limited language skills,
0:05:26 > 0:05:30decided it was easier to start the ball rolling on home soil.
0:05:30 > 0:05:34My customer base currently is mainly from the UK.
0:05:34 > 0:05:37It's an internet-based company at the moment but I certainly
0:05:37 > 0:05:40plan on expansion when I move to Italy, not contraction.
0:05:40 > 0:05:42I would like to think I can create a little business empire.
0:05:42 > 0:05:45Obviously I would need good internet connection
0:05:45 > 0:05:50and I'd also need quite a bit of land to grow the vines and the fruits.
0:05:50 > 0:05:55I would like a big orchard really and, in terms of the house,
0:05:55 > 0:05:58I would like a very large kitchen, a nice efficient kitchen.
0:05:58 > 0:06:01I'd really be looking for something which has got the old character
0:06:01 > 0:06:04but has been refurbished to a nice standard.
0:06:04 > 0:06:07- I'm thinking marble and granite and things.- Oh, yes!
0:06:07 > 0:06:10And also I might need some outbuildings, you know,
0:06:10 > 0:06:11in terms of preparing the products.
0:06:11 > 0:06:14Ideally I'd love to have a terrace, I have this vision of me sitting on
0:06:14 > 0:06:20my terrace, running the global business with my glass of red wine.
0:06:20 > 0:06:24Janice is also hoping her back-to-nature venture will be
0:06:24 > 0:06:27the perfect tonic for her 90-year-old mother.
0:06:27 > 0:06:29So I'd be taking my mum with me to Italy
0:06:29 > 0:06:33and she's got some health issues, some cognitive decline,
0:06:33 > 0:06:37so I need to look after her much of my time really when she's awake
0:06:37 > 0:06:41but she does spend more and more time actually sleeping
0:06:41 > 0:06:44but I do know that fresh air, oxygen is necessary for this condition
0:06:44 > 0:06:49and I would hope because of the nicer weather I can get her outside more.
0:06:49 > 0:06:53Her wholesome entrepreneurial skills are clearly paying off already
0:06:53 > 0:06:57as Janice has an equally healthy budget for this upcoming move.
0:06:57 > 0:07:02My absolute limit really is about £700,000
0:07:02 > 0:07:05but ideally I would like it to be less than that.
0:07:08 > 0:07:13We'll be taking Janice and her dear friend Dorothy to see a variety of
0:07:13 > 0:07:17delightful Le Marche homes in the southern portion of the region
0:07:17 > 0:07:21between the Sibillini Mountains National Park and the sea.
0:07:21 > 0:07:25We're starting off inland just outside the town of Caldarola
0:07:25 > 0:07:27to discuss the finer details
0:07:27 > 0:07:30of Janice's prospective continental move.
0:07:30 > 0:07:34So ladies, here we are in Le Marche, a beautiful part of central Italy.
0:07:34 > 0:07:37Welcome to you both, Janice and Dorothy.
0:07:37 > 0:07:39So Janice, why have you picked this part?
0:07:39 > 0:07:43Well, I think Le Marche has everything that's lovely about Italy.
0:07:43 > 0:07:47Beautiful countryside, it has medieval castles and churches,
0:07:47 > 0:07:50beautiful produce as well, the people are very much in touch with nature.
0:07:50 > 0:07:53- It's just beautiful. - So do you know this region well?
0:07:53 > 0:07:56Because you're the one that's going to be hopefully moving here.
0:07:56 > 0:08:00Yes, I've been here to Urbino and Pesaro in the past
0:08:00 > 0:08:03but that's it really, I haven't managed to explore the countryside.
0:08:03 > 0:08:06So Dorothy, are you going to be keeping us all in check?
0:08:06 > 0:08:07Looking after her welfare?
0:08:07 > 0:08:10Well, yes, I've known Janice since she was a child
0:08:10 > 0:08:15and I looked after her then and my role here is to be her mentor here.
0:08:15 > 0:08:19And you've got a successful business, hasn't she, in the UK?
0:08:19 > 0:08:21- Is that something you're hoping to bring...- Absolutely.
0:08:21 > 0:08:25- ..to Italy as well?- And I'm hoping that the property we find might
0:08:25 > 0:08:29have products that grow there, you know, the vines, an orchard,
0:08:29 > 0:08:32because I use things like grape extract in my products.
0:08:32 > 0:08:35I'm thinking a little bit of a retreat here, Dorothy.
0:08:35 > 0:08:38Well, I'm hoping that she finds a property here
0:08:38 > 0:08:42because then, I mean, we are very close friends
0:08:42 > 0:08:45that perhaps I'll be invited for a holiday.
0:08:45 > 0:08:47So Janice, tell us about this property.
0:08:47 > 0:08:50Dorothy and I are thinking suitable place to come on holiday,
0:08:50 > 0:08:53possible retreat, but in all seriousness,
0:08:53 > 0:08:55what are you looking for you and your mum?
0:08:55 > 0:08:58I'm looking for a main house which would be on fairly level ground.
0:08:58 > 0:09:01Obviously a lovely house and a lovely garden,
0:09:01 > 0:09:05flat land around the house hopefully and perhaps a swimming pool.
0:09:05 > 0:09:06How many bedrooms are we after?
0:09:06 > 0:09:09I think we need three to four in the main house
0:09:09 > 0:09:12but I would hope there might be some outbuildings that I could convert.
0:09:12 > 0:09:15- So we're looking at possibilities? - Yes, yes.- We can expand.
0:09:15 > 0:09:18And, Dorothy, what do you think Janice needs in this new house?
0:09:18 > 0:09:21Because it's not just about a property, is it?
0:09:21 > 0:09:23It's about changing the way we live our lives.
0:09:23 > 0:09:28Well, I think as she said, she needs sufficient bedroom space
0:09:28 > 0:09:33so that she can accommodate friends because I think she needs to relate
0:09:33 > 0:09:39back to her roots in the UK as well as exploring new ones in Italy.
0:09:39 > 0:09:42- That's a very valid point, isn't it? - It is very good, yes.- Very good, yes,
0:09:42 > 0:09:44friends and family, it's so important when you're out here,
0:09:44 > 0:09:45- isn't it?- Yeah.
0:09:45 > 0:09:47- CHURCH BELLS RING - Well, there are the bells,
0:09:47 > 0:09:49that's calling us to start our search.
0:09:49 > 0:09:52- I've got the first house lined up so shall we start, ladies?- Great.
0:09:52 > 0:09:55Thank you.
0:09:55 > 0:09:57For a maximum budget of £700,000,
0:09:57 > 0:10:01Janice is hoping to find a traditional property with at least
0:10:01 > 0:10:04three bedrooms, a large kitchen
0:10:04 > 0:10:09and outbuildings with business potential for her holistic company.
0:10:09 > 0:10:12She's after a substantial plot of level land,
0:10:12 > 0:10:15ideally with orchards and vines as well as a swimming pool.
0:10:17 > 0:10:20And we've got four first-rate Italian houses up for offer
0:10:20 > 0:10:24with land aplenty, but I won't be revealing their price tags
0:10:24 > 0:10:26until the end of each tour.
0:10:26 > 0:10:29Our Le Marche expedition will uncover new properties,
0:10:29 > 0:10:33places and people, then we'll be unveiling a spectacularly
0:10:33 > 0:10:36rural setting with a less than traditional home
0:10:36 > 0:10:38in the form of the mystery house.
0:10:43 > 0:10:46We're starting our property-seeking journey
0:10:46 > 0:10:49in the fortified hilltop town of San Ginesio.
0:10:49 > 0:10:54Some 700m high in the hills, the sweeping views from San Ginesio
0:10:54 > 0:10:58out across lush valleys and mountains are sublime.
0:10:58 > 0:11:01This delightful small town has a strong medieval heritage
0:11:01 > 0:11:06protected by heavy-duty 14th-century walls, with buildings that
0:11:06 > 0:11:08date even further back in time.
0:11:08 > 0:11:12There's a great selection of shops off the main piazza,
0:11:12 > 0:11:17including a grocer's and a butcher, and, just ten minutes' drive,
0:11:17 > 0:11:20our first property is tucked away in rolling patchwork fields,
0:11:20 > 0:11:23approached by a sweeping gravel driveway,
0:11:23 > 0:11:25featuring a large garage block.
0:11:28 > 0:11:31So we've just driven you through San Ginesio, which is your
0:11:31 > 0:11:37local town, to bring you to our first property.
0:11:37 > 0:11:39It's fantastic!
0:11:39 > 0:11:43- Has it taken your breath away a little bit?- Yeah, I like it.- Yes?
0:11:43 > 0:11:48- Yes.- And I'm truly hoping this house is going to reignite your
0:11:48 > 0:11:51- love affair with Italy. - I think it might.
0:11:51 > 0:11:54- Yeah?- Quick, can we go and look? - Yeah, keen, keen. Dorothy?- Yes.
0:11:54 > 0:11:55Come on then, girls.
0:11:57 > 0:12:01Converted in the 1930s, this grand three-storey former farmhouse
0:12:01 > 0:12:03is built of honey-coloured stone,
0:12:03 > 0:12:06with contrasting deep-green shutter doors and windows
0:12:06 > 0:12:10that perfectly complement its natural surroundings.
0:12:10 > 0:12:13The hallway welcomes us inside and
0:12:13 > 0:12:16leads straight into the heart of the house.
0:12:16 > 0:12:18- That's your kitchen.- Great.
0:12:18 > 0:12:22With granite work surfaces, huge sink, so you've got a dining area
0:12:22 > 0:12:26here, informal seating, with a wood burner there.
0:12:26 > 0:12:30- So this is the fireplace for the kitchen?- It is for the kitchen area.
0:12:30 > 0:12:34- Leading onto the terrace.- Yes, a bit of al fresco dining outside.
0:12:34 > 0:12:39- Yes, lovely.- Patio doors leading out. You've got this very high ceiling.
0:12:39 > 0:12:44- Yeah.- And beams.- Yeah.- Beautiful beams.- I think it's very Italian.
0:12:44 > 0:12:48- Yes, it is.- I spend most of my time in the kitchen really
0:12:48 > 0:12:51and the fact that we could eat at the table there is excellent, yeah,
0:12:51 > 0:12:53and the views, they're great.
0:12:53 > 0:12:56Do you think we could have a pound or a euro for every time
0:12:56 > 0:13:00we say great view? We're going to be rich by the end of this, aren't we?
0:13:00 > 0:13:02- Well, would you like me to show you a bit more?- Please.- OK.
0:13:04 > 0:13:09We don't have to go too far because here is our sitting room.
0:13:09 > 0:13:13- This is lovely.- Oh, it's beautiful. - It's great, it's really great.
0:13:13 > 0:13:17I love the windows, the doors, the fireplace and the elegance.
0:13:17 > 0:13:20I love the elegance. Some houses in the country are a little bit rustic
0:13:20 > 0:13:22and I couldn't really live like that.
0:13:22 > 0:13:25I have to live with elegance, you know, it clears the mind.
0:13:25 > 0:13:27Look at the ceiling.
0:13:27 > 0:13:31So unusual. As you can see it's vaulted and you can probably see
0:13:31 > 0:13:35the line running across it, because guess who used to live in here.
0:13:35 > 0:13:37Believe it or not, the animals.
0:13:37 > 0:13:41When this house was built around the 1930s, livestock was in this part
0:13:41 > 0:13:45of the house, so things would've been hanging from that pole.
0:13:45 > 0:13:47It's very different but it really works.
0:13:47 > 0:13:50The animals would be very happy with it.
0:13:50 > 0:13:54I'll tell you what, Dorothy, this animal would be very happy in here
0:13:54 > 0:13:57because it is a tremendous property.
0:13:57 > 0:14:00You've got patio doors on either side, so the dual aspect.
0:14:00 > 0:14:04Now, it's a large space, and primarily
0:14:04 > 0:14:06there's only going to be two of you living here.
0:14:06 > 0:14:10- Do you think you can cope with that? - Oh, yes, I can cope.- Yeah?
0:14:10 > 0:14:12I can cope with bigger really.
0:14:12 > 0:14:16But I can imagine my table here, unless there's another room?
0:14:16 > 0:14:18- A dining room?- Well, it would be a shame not to show you...
0:14:18 > 0:14:22- Yes, it would.- ..what else there is, wouldn't it? Let's have a look.
0:14:24 > 0:14:29- My goodness!- How's this for a dining room?- Oh, wow.- This is unbelievable.
0:14:29 > 0:14:32It's a little bit of a treasure, I think, at the end of the property.
0:14:32 > 0:14:36I wasn't expecting this to be here and then you walk through.
0:14:36 > 0:14:38- Not at all.- Dorothy? - Hope she buys it.
0:14:38 > 0:14:40And it's only our first property.
0:14:40 > 0:14:43Let's head upstairs, look at the bedrooms
0:14:43 > 0:14:46- and hopefully that love affair will continue.- OK.
0:14:52 > 0:14:56So we have to start off upstairs with the master bedroom
0:14:56 > 0:14:59for the most important lady in the house.
0:14:59 > 0:15:02- Beautiful en-suite. - The bathroom looks quite big.
0:15:02 > 0:15:06Yeah, the bathroom is really spacious with a sunken bath.
0:15:06 > 0:15:07Quite ornate, actually.
0:15:07 > 0:15:12On this floor, you have four bedrooms in total.
0:15:12 > 0:15:13- Oh, right.- Good, good.
0:15:13 > 0:15:18So you have another three bedrooms with two family bathrooms attached.
0:15:18 > 0:15:23- Great.- If that wasn't enough, up the stairs, two more bedrooms.
0:15:23 > 0:15:28- No, no!- With a huge study area as well.- Really?
0:15:28 > 0:15:32And being mindful of your mother, plenty of bedrooms with
0:15:32 > 0:15:37- her own bathroom if she can cope with the stairs.- Yes.
0:15:37 > 0:15:41- Are you pleasantly surprised? - Yes, very pleasantly surprised.
0:15:41 > 0:15:43- It's exceeded expectations, put it that way.- So pleased.
0:15:43 > 0:15:46All my expectations. It really has, honestly.
0:15:46 > 0:15:49I think I would've been disappointed if you'd said anything different.
0:15:49 > 0:15:50Well, it's an amazing house.
0:15:50 > 0:15:53So let's head outside, let's talk about the land,
0:15:53 > 0:15:56because I know that's equally as important as the property,
0:15:56 > 0:15:57and get your thoughts on that.
0:15:59 > 0:16:02The grounds that come with the property are really rather special
0:16:02 > 0:16:05and cover just over seven acres of woodland
0:16:05 > 0:16:08and gently undulating fields.
0:16:08 > 0:16:12Closer to the house, the landscaped garden features fruit trees,
0:16:12 > 0:16:16a sunny terrace and 100 square metres of garage space that could be
0:16:16 > 0:16:19developed for Janice's business needs.
0:16:19 > 0:16:22And directly to the rear of the property,
0:16:22 > 0:16:24a pretty vine-covered portico
0:16:24 > 0:16:28where the terracotta tiled pathway leads straight up to a pool.
0:16:28 > 0:16:30- Gosh.- Isn't it beautiful? - Yes, crikey.
0:16:30 > 0:16:34There is a shallow end but it's been lined with black
0:16:34 > 0:16:38- so it has a real impact, don't you think?- Yes, it does.- I love it.
0:16:38 > 0:16:40- Do you?- Yes, I do.- Are you excited? - I'm very excited.
0:16:40 > 0:16:44Scale of one to ten, how happy does this house make you?
0:16:44 > 0:16:48- Eight out of ten.- Oh, that's not bad! I was hoping for nine.
0:16:48 > 0:16:51Let's see if the price can make a difference.
0:16:51 > 0:16:54How much do you think the property
0:16:54 > 0:16:58is on the market for in this idyllic setting?
0:16:58 > 0:17:00- 650.- Dorothy?
0:17:00 > 0:17:03I think it would be a little over 700,000,
0:17:03 > 0:17:06I think there's an awful lot here.
0:17:06 > 0:17:08It's halfway between the two of you.
0:17:08 > 0:17:13The asking price is £675,000.
0:17:13 > 0:17:17- Oh, that's right. Right, OK. - I'm very surprised.
0:17:17 > 0:17:21- Very surprised, I thought it would be more expensive.- So...
0:17:21 > 0:17:24- Yeah.- ..why don't you have a little time on your own?
0:17:24 > 0:17:28Go back into that property, check out those extra bedrooms,
0:17:28 > 0:17:31have a think of how you would use it for your business,
0:17:31 > 0:17:34also for your mum, which is so important,
0:17:34 > 0:17:36and then I'll come and find you in a little while.
0:17:36 > 0:17:38- OK.- Off you go.- All right, thank you.- Thank you.
0:17:40 > 0:17:44Just under the top budget of £700,000,
0:17:44 > 0:17:46our first property is a beautiful...
0:17:55 > 0:17:59Outside, a separate garage could be suitable for Janice's business,
0:17:59 > 0:18:03and it all stands within a plot of some seven acres.
0:18:03 > 0:18:08Well, I think the property is...it's stunning from the outside
0:18:08 > 0:18:11and it's stunning from the inside actually as well.
0:18:11 > 0:18:15It has very beautiful features
0:18:15 > 0:18:21and I think whoever renovated this farmhouse did an absolutely
0:18:21 > 0:18:26fantastic job because everything is done to an extremely high standard.
0:18:28 > 0:18:31- How we doing, ladies? Have you seen enough?- Yes.
0:18:31 > 0:18:34- Yes, I think we've seen everything. - Yeah? Are you sad to leave?
0:18:34 > 0:18:37- I think that's always a good test with a property.- Yes, very sad.
0:18:37 > 0:18:41- Yeah, what about you, Dorothy? - Oh, very sad to leave, yes, very.
0:18:41 > 0:18:44- Good, I'm taking that as a good sign. Right, let's go.- OK.
0:18:49 > 0:18:52Well, what a great start to our house hunt here in Le Marche.
0:18:52 > 0:18:56Dorothy and Janice loved our first property so I must admit
0:18:56 > 0:19:01I was a little perplexed when Janice only gave it eight out of ten
0:19:01 > 0:19:03but I'm not one to be put off
0:19:03 > 0:19:07and today I'm feeling quietly confident with our next viewing.
0:19:07 > 0:19:09Not only is it a superb house,
0:19:09 > 0:19:12it also has the potential for a vineyard.
0:19:13 > 0:19:17Our next destination is in the hillside town of Sarnano,
0:19:17 > 0:19:20which lies at the foot of the Sibillini Mountains
0:19:20 > 0:19:25and so has extensive verdant views across the elevated terrain.
0:19:25 > 0:19:28Sarnano's cobbled streets have a good selection of shops that
0:19:28 > 0:19:30include a general store and bakery
0:19:30 > 0:19:34as well as street markets selling local produce.
0:19:35 > 0:19:37And within walking distance of the town,
0:19:37 > 0:19:40we come to the gates of our next house,
0:19:40 > 0:19:43a country villa with 150-year-old pedigree that offers
0:19:43 > 0:19:46a serious amount of bricks and mortar.
0:19:48 > 0:19:50So on to our next property.
0:19:52 > 0:19:57- Very nice.- Now you're probably wondering...- Yes.- ..which one is it?
0:19:57 > 0:20:00- Yes.- Oh, yes. - This is the property.- Yes.
0:20:00 > 0:20:04- But these two buildings either side come with the property.- Really?
0:20:04 > 0:20:07- Oh, great.- So what do you think of the actual house itself?
0:20:07 > 0:20:11- It looks fantastic. It looks beautiful.- I love the brickwork.
0:20:11 > 0:20:12Really?
0:20:12 > 0:20:15- You like the idea of...- I like it. I like the idea of having the three.
0:20:15 > 0:20:20- Yes.- Yes, I think you could have that house and I'll have that one.
0:20:20 > 0:20:22Dorothy, I'm loving your work already.
0:20:22 > 0:20:24You might not need me, she's already sold it.
0:20:24 > 0:20:26And the symmetry's very nice.
0:20:26 > 0:20:30I like houses to be symmetrical like this with the door in the middle,
0:20:30 > 0:20:33- that's great.- It's a handsome looking property, isn't it?- Yes.
0:20:33 > 0:20:36- Shall we step inside?- Yes, please.
0:20:36 > 0:20:39Located at the edge of the national park,
0:20:39 > 0:20:42this second option is an extensive property with
0:20:42 > 0:20:47a wide range of options and we're starting the tour in the main house.
0:20:47 > 0:20:50So the first room when you come into the property is a
0:20:50 > 0:20:53very Italian dining room.
0:20:53 > 0:20:57- It's lovely.- Yeah?- Yes, beautiful, beautiful ceilings.- All the beams.
0:20:57 > 0:21:00But you've also got...cotta, they call it, with the terracotta tiles
0:21:00 > 0:21:04- on the floor, they've got a varnish on them.- Really nice.- Yeah.
0:21:04 > 0:21:06- Yes.- Do you like it, Dorothy? - I like it.
0:21:06 > 0:21:11- Yes, it's not intimidating in its size, it's cosy, isn't it?- Yes.
0:21:11 > 0:21:13- You're keen to see some more? - Yes, please.
0:21:15 > 0:21:18- Now how's this for a kitchen? - This is lovely, Nicki.- Yes.
0:21:18 > 0:21:22- It's a great shape, a great size. - Yeah.- Very homely.
0:21:22 > 0:21:25I like the granite work surfaces and the tiles
0:21:25 > 0:21:29and the log burning stove would be great in the winter, nice and cosy.
0:21:29 > 0:21:31It's just absolutely exquisite.
0:21:31 > 0:21:35You've also got a utility room next door with additional storage,
0:21:35 > 0:21:37which I think is always handy.
0:21:37 > 0:21:41But let's keep going, I've got more to show you through here.
0:21:41 > 0:21:44The main reception room on this floor
0:21:44 > 0:21:46has been divided into two sitting areas.
0:21:46 > 0:21:48One part is more of a cosy snug,
0:21:48 > 0:21:52and the other side a sunroom with views out across the pool
0:21:52 > 0:21:55that I hope will be to Janice's exacting taste.
0:21:55 > 0:21:57It has a bit more of a modern feel actually.
0:21:57 > 0:22:00Even though I know it's an old house, older perhaps house.
0:22:00 > 0:22:04- It is older, yes.- But it feels a little bit more modern, yeah.
0:22:04 > 0:22:06- And it's very light, isn't it? - It's still traditional,
0:22:06 > 0:22:09- if you see what I mean.- Yes, and again it's important because
0:22:09 > 0:22:12your mother's going to be part of this big move. Would she be happy?
0:22:12 > 0:22:14I think it would be great from the point of view that she's got
0:22:14 > 0:22:17a lot to see outside. She can look at the trees.
0:22:17 > 0:22:21We don't do that at the moment so that's a real plus.
0:22:21 > 0:22:25So are we liking this house? Does it feel like a home?
0:22:25 > 0:22:28- Well, I think it's pretty good.- Yes. - You like it, Dorothy, don't you?
0:22:28 > 0:22:31- Yes, yes.- Janice, what do you think? - Yes, I think it's great.
0:22:31 > 0:22:33- I want to see the rest.- Yeah?- Yes.
0:22:33 > 0:22:35- OK, well, there's one more thing to show you...- OK.
0:22:35 > 0:22:36- ..on the ground floor.- OK.
0:22:39 > 0:22:40Have a little look at this room
0:22:40 > 0:22:44but guess what this room used to be used for?
0:22:45 > 0:22:49There's an oven there. The washing?
0:22:49 > 0:22:51No, grapes.
0:22:51 > 0:22:55- Oh!- They used to harvest grapes here. Where the hot tub is...- Yes.
0:22:55 > 0:22:57..that's where they used to put the grapes.
0:22:57 > 0:23:00The family used to roll up their trousers...
0:23:00 > 0:23:02- Fantastic.- ..use their feet.
0:23:02 > 0:23:05The juice would come through into here, you can see there's a hole.
0:23:05 > 0:23:07- Yes, yes.- Drain into there
0:23:07 > 0:23:10and then it would be transferred from there into the cauldron.
0:23:10 > 0:23:16- Stoking the fire, they'd produce their own wine.- Amazing.
0:23:16 > 0:23:20So this house has a history of vine growing.
0:23:20 > 0:23:24We'll come back to the vine possibilities later
0:23:24 > 0:23:27but for now we're going to head to the three bedrooms upstairs.
0:23:27 > 0:23:31A fully tiled family bedroom serves two large double rooms
0:23:31 > 0:23:34and we're going to take a peek at the largest bedroom.
0:23:35 > 0:23:41- So the end of the hallway is your master bedroom.- Very nice.
0:23:41 > 0:23:46- With a good sized en-suite as well. - Oh, OK, great.
0:23:46 > 0:23:50This is a very feminine room without being too ornate.
0:23:50 > 0:23:53A very subtle palette that's been used.
0:23:53 > 0:23:56- And I just love the beams everywhere. - Yeah.- They're beautiful.
0:23:57 > 0:24:01That wraps up the principal accommodation in the main house,
0:24:01 > 0:24:04which stands in just under ten acres of land,
0:24:04 > 0:24:09that includes formal lawned gardens, terraced seating areas,
0:24:09 > 0:24:11the swimming pool we saw earlier
0:24:11 > 0:24:15and sheltered sloped acreage with suitable soil for vine growing.
0:24:15 > 0:24:18Then there's even more potential for guests,
0:24:18 > 0:24:20and business, in the two remaining buildings.
0:24:22 > 0:24:24Got a coach house to our left,
0:24:24 > 0:24:27built around the same time as the main house,
0:24:27 > 0:24:30that's been converted into an artist's studio.
0:24:30 > 0:24:33It's huge, the downstairs is very much open-plan,
0:24:33 > 0:24:36there's still the troughs, they've left them where the animals
0:24:36 > 0:24:39used to eat, but that could be a great conference room
0:24:39 > 0:24:42or if you wanted to do lectures to talk about your business.
0:24:42 > 0:24:43You've got a little kitchenette,
0:24:43 > 0:24:46there's also a pull-down bed in there.
0:24:46 > 0:24:48Potential to rent that out.
0:24:48 > 0:24:52If that wasn't enough, the other side of the property
0:24:52 > 0:24:57there's two huge garages, but, above that, a self-contained flat.
0:24:57 > 0:24:58Oh, great.
0:24:58 > 0:25:00- Dorothy, are you with me on this one?- Very good.
0:25:00 > 0:25:02- We like that, don't we? - Yeah, that's great.
0:25:02 > 0:25:05- Friends, family, but again you could rent that out.- Oh, it sounds good.
0:25:05 > 0:25:07So with all of this going for it,
0:25:07 > 0:25:09right on the edge of the national park,
0:25:09 > 0:25:12we are unfortunately going to have to put a price on it.
0:25:12 > 0:25:16Well, it's always difficult. I think it's going to be at the top end.
0:25:16 > 0:25:19I think 700 or above even, yeah.
0:25:19 > 0:25:21Right. Dorothy?
0:25:21 > 0:25:23690.
0:25:23 > 0:25:26- It's actually under your budget.- Oh!
0:25:26 > 0:25:28Yeah, asking price is £658,000.
0:25:30 > 0:25:32- Really?- Oh, yes.- Oh, right, OK.
0:25:32 > 0:25:35- Yeah, that's good. - Gives you some flexibility.
0:25:35 > 0:25:39- I like it, it's a very... it's neat and...- Is it you?
0:25:39 > 0:25:40It could be me, yes.
0:25:40 > 0:25:43So why don't you take this opportunity to go off on your own
0:25:43 > 0:25:46- and I'll come and find you? - Thanks.- Thank you.
0:25:46 > 0:25:49Very comfortably under budget,
0:25:49 > 0:25:52the second property is a handsome three-bedroom country villa...
0:26:01 > 0:26:04And the whole lot lies in nearly ten acres of
0:26:04 > 0:26:07Le Marche's prime countryside.
0:26:09 > 0:26:10Oh, look at this.
0:26:12 > 0:26:14This is huge.
0:26:14 > 0:26:19- Yes, it's an unusually shaped room. - Yeah, with a fireplace at the end.
0:26:19 > 0:26:21Ooh, could do lots of things with this.
0:26:21 > 0:26:25- And again the beams and the terracotta tiles.- Yeah, it's lovely.
0:26:26 > 0:26:29I think the first impressions of this property
0:26:29 > 0:26:30are that it's really Italian,
0:26:30 > 0:26:34it's really smart actually, smart looking, and the garden,
0:26:34 > 0:26:36that landscaping is beautiful.
0:26:36 > 0:26:39The slope is a little...might be a little bit hard work, you know,
0:26:39 > 0:26:44to farm that land and I would've liked the vines to be established now
0:26:44 > 0:26:47rather than having to wait perhaps ten years if I planted some.
0:26:47 > 0:26:50It's given me a lot to think about.
0:26:50 > 0:26:53- Hello.- Hello.- Have you seen enough? - Yes, it's great.
0:26:53 > 0:26:56There's a lot to see with this property, isn't there?
0:26:56 > 0:26:59- Yes, there is.- Yeah?- Yeah, there's a lot of potential here.- Good!
0:26:59 > 0:27:02- Because I wasn't sure, you're quite reserved.- Yeah. No, I'm thinking.
0:27:02 > 0:27:05- Are you holding back from me? - When I'm reserved I'm thinking.
0:27:05 > 0:27:08That's good. Keep thinking because it's positive.
0:27:08 > 0:27:10- Right, let's hit the road.- OK.
0:27:14 > 0:27:17Janice has chosen to relocate to the Le Marche region
0:27:17 > 0:27:21to reap the benefits of its rich, fertile soil
0:27:21 > 0:27:24but the small village of Acqualagna has already cultivated
0:27:24 > 0:27:28a multi-million-pound industry, as its world renowned
0:27:28 > 0:27:30for the most valuable truffles on the market.
0:27:32 > 0:27:36The chief truffle hunters are Giorgio Remedia and his pet dog,
0:27:36 > 0:27:38who's trained to detect the scent
0:27:38 > 0:27:40of the rare fungi buried deep underground.
0:27:40 > 0:27:44So we've arranged for Janice and Dorothy to join this expert duo
0:27:44 > 0:27:48along with his fellow English speaking aficionado Paola Marini
0:27:48 > 0:27:50to explain the process.
0:27:50 > 0:27:54This place is one of the very few places in the world
0:27:54 > 0:27:58where all the three major truffles do grow.
0:27:58 > 0:28:02The white truffles, which are the most precious ones,
0:28:02 > 0:28:06black winter truffles and summer truffles.
0:28:06 > 0:28:09Can you explain a little more about the role of the dog?
0:28:09 > 0:28:12Basically the job of the dog is to find the small area where
0:28:12 > 0:28:17the truffle grows and he can do this by having a much better nose
0:28:17 > 0:28:19than human beings have.
0:28:19 > 0:28:22And how long have you been doing this kind of work?
0:28:22 > 0:28:23HE SPEAKS IN ITALIAN
0:28:23 > 0:28:25Oh, all his life!
0:28:26 > 0:28:30Reliant on tree roots for nutrients, truffles are almost always found
0:28:30 > 0:28:32in heavily forested areas,
0:28:32 > 0:28:35more commonly those with oak and hazelnut trees.
0:28:35 > 0:28:39- We've found a truffle by... - Oh, really?
0:28:39 > 0:28:44The dog has dredged the surface and as soon as Giorgio has
0:28:44 > 0:28:49seen the truffle, he has stopped the dog and giving him his reward.
0:28:50 > 0:28:54Once the dog marks a truffle, the hunter carefully digs it up.
0:28:54 > 0:28:56Weight for weight,
0:28:56 > 0:28:59truffles are one of the most expensive foods on the planet
0:28:59 > 0:29:02and it's the white ones that have the highest price tag.
0:29:03 > 0:29:06- This is the king of...mushrooms. - OK, yes.
0:29:06 > 0:29:11In terms of value, in terms of rarity, uniqueness, so there's only
0:29:11 > 0:29:16one better thing to do than truffle hunting and that's truffle eating.
0:29:16 > 0:29:19Truffles are best eaten as fresh as possible
0:29:19 > 0:29:23so Giorgio is taking our ladies to a nearby restaurant to sample
0:29:23 > 0:29:27the morning's harvest, and on the menu is a simple pasta dish
0:29:27 > 0:29:31finished with some raw, freshly grated white and black truffle.
0:29:31 > 0:29:33Ooh!
0:29:33 > 0:29:36- It's just like nothing else really. - My goodness, this is delicious.
0:29:36 > 0:29:40- What do you think?- Don't take all the truffle, leave some for me!
0:29:40 > 0:29:41I'll try not to.
0:29:41 > 0:29:44I can see how you can get addicted to this.
0:29:48 > 0:29:52The last port of call today is another house and this one
0:29:52 > 0:29:54is right down on the southern border of the region,
0:29:54 > 0:29:56near the village of Venarotta.
0:29:56 > 0:29:59Surrounded by mountainous escarpments,
0:29:59 > 0:30:02Venarotta's streets are lined with heavy stone architecture
0:30:02 > 0:30:04housing all the essential amenities
0:30:04 > 0:30:08and bordered by attractive patterned paved stones.
0:30:08 > 0:30:10And on the outskirts of the village,
0:30:10 > 0:30:13down a long driveway, we find our next house.
0:30:15 > 0:30:18So, you two, we've had some very favourable comments
0:30:18 > 0:30:23on our Italian property and here is our next offering.
0:30:23 > 0:30:28- It looks fantastic.- Yes?- Yes. - What grabs you when you look at it?
0:30:28 > 0:30:31- Looks very solid. - Yes, a substantial property.- Yeah.
0:30:31 > 0:30:36- It has a lot of warm colours in the stonework...- Yes.- ..doesn't it?
0:30:36 > 0:30:40- I love those windowsills.- You itching to get inside?- Itching, yes.
0:30:41 > 0:30:43Dating back about 100 years,
0:30:43 > 0:30:47this property is an interesting proposition, being that behind
0:30:47 > 0:30:52the traditional looking facade it has a rather unexpected layout.
0:30:52 > 0:30:54Recently renovated by the current occupants,
0:30:54 > 0:30:59the house has been divided into two completely independent zones
0:30:59 > 0:31:01and we're starting the tour up on the first floor
0:31:01 > 0:31:04in the parts Janice would probably want to call home.
0:31:06 > 0:31:07So...
0:31:07 > 0:31:12you've sort of got a separate house upstairs.
0:31:12 > 0:31:14It's got its own front door, which leads you
0:31:14 > 0:31:16straight into the drawing room.
0:31:16 > 0:31:19Massive window right in front of you.
0:31:19 > 0:31:21It's very nice, yeah, very elegant.
0:31:21 > 0:31:25And it's getting your head around a very different layout...
0:31:25 > 0:31:26- It's lovely.- ..and you've got a fire,
0:31:26 > 0:31:29you'll also have central heating with this property.
0:31:29 > 0:31:32- And around the corner, Nicki? - It's semi open-plan.
0:31:32 > 0:31:36The next room I think is very impressive.
0:31:37 > 0:31:43You have here your dining area and also a fabulous kitchen.
0:31:43 > 0:31:45Oh, that's lovely. Really nice.
0:31:46 > 0:31:51- Fantastic.- I love that cooker.- Yes. - Isn't it gorgeous?- Yes.- Yes.
0:31:51 > 0:31:54Oh, it's very nice, very sleek and modern.
0:31:54 > 0:31:58I love the decor and the units are great. The granite is beautiful.
0:31:58 > 0:32:02- I like the island in the middle. - Yeah, I do love those.
0:32:02 > 0:32:06I love the colours and the tiles on the floor are really nice.
0:32:06 > 0:32:09So we're doing well so far.
0:32:09 > 0:32:13- I want to show you the master bedroom on the upstairs.- OK.
0:32:16 > 0:32:22Now, we've just walked through one bedroom/office.
0:32:22 > 0:32:26You've got an en-suite there, which in actual fact both bedrooms share.
0:32:26 > 0:32:30- OK.- And then this is the master bedroom.
0:32:30 > 0:32:34- Wow, look at it. Look at this bed.- What a bed!
0:32:34 > 0:32:37- It's very inviting, isn't it, girls?- Oh, yes.- Yes.
0:32:37 > 0:32:40Your mother actually could be in the bedroom next door to you.
0:32:40 > 0:32:43If that's a little bit too claustrophobic for you,
0:32:43 > 0:32:47perhaps your mum's area could be underneath
0:32:47 > 0:32:52- because there's so much space down there as well.- Very nice, very nice.
0:32:52 > 0:32:54Now everything has been very nice.
0:32:54 > 0:32:56Yes, I know everything's been very nice.
0:32:56 > 0:32:59Show me something I don't like and I can pull a face at and say,
0:32:59 > 0:33:02- "This is horrible. I couldn't live here."- Well, that's good.
0:33:02 > 0:33:04Could you live here? Could you live up here?
0:33:04 > 0:33:06- Oh, I could live here tomorrow.- Yes.
0:33:06 > 0:33:10- Now, that's the first time you've said that to me.- I know, yeah.
0:33:10 > 0:33:11Down on the ground floor,
0:33:11 > 0:33:15there are a further two large interconnecting en-suite bedrooms,
0:33:15 > 0:33:18one with double doors out to the front.
0:33:18 > 0:33:21Then to the other side of the hallway is a steam room, sauna
0:33:21 > 0:33:24and utility with a small kitchenette.
0:33:24 > 0:33:26These ground-floor rooms are currently used for
0:33:26 > 0:33:30rental accommodation and are served by another quite compact kitchen,
0:33:30 > 0:33:33breakfast and living room that benefit from a large
0:33:33 > 0:33:36sunny balcony with views over the garden.
0:33:36 > 0:33:39This property has a lot of flexibility,
0:33:39 > 0:33:43giving plenty of options for Janice, her mother and the business.
0:33:43 > 0:33:47The house stands in some ten acres of mostly flat land,
0:33:47 > 0:33:49featuring olive groves, a tennis court
0:33:49 > 0:33:52and that all-important swimming pool.
0:33:52 > 0:33:56I mean, just standing here, what springs to mind?
0:33:56 > 0:34:03- I'm thinking figs and olives and swimming.- Healthy lifestyle, yeah.
0:34:03 > 0:34:06It's a beautiful swimming area.
0:34:06 > 0:34:09I mean, this is not the North of England, is it?
0:34:09 > 0:34:11No, it most certainly is not.
0:34:11 > 0:34:15- This isn't a conventional house, let's see...- No.
0:34:15 > 0:34:17..if that's reflected in the price.
0:34:17 > 0:34:19You go first.
0:34:19 > 0:34:21I think 65?
0:34:21 > 0:34:25- OK, £650,000?- Yes.- OK.
0:34:25 > 0:34:27I think it might be over budget in fact.
0:34:27 > 0:34:29Maybe 725?
0:34:29 > 0:34:34Well, how do you fancy £594,000?
0:34:34 > 0:34:39- Really?- Yes.- Oh, wow!- OK. - That is a lot of difference.
0:34:39 > 0:34:44- That's interesting.- Yeah.- There must be something wrong with it.- No!
0:34:44 > 0:34:48You can't say that to me. It needs the right buyer.
0:34:48 > 0:34:51This house only works for certain people the way
0:34:51 > 0:34:54- it's currently laid out.- OK.
0:34:54 > 0:34:58So wander around imagining this could be your future home,
0:34:58 > 0:35:00what would it be like to live here?
0:35:00 > 0:35:03- All right.- See you later. - OK.- Thank you.
0:35:03 > 0:35:08Over £100,000 under budget, this stone-built country house
0:35:08 > 0:35:11practically offers two complete homes for the price of one.
0:35:22 > 0:35:25Well, upstairs in this house it's very elegant,
0:35:25 > 0:35:28very special I would say.
0:35:28 > 0:35:33Downstairs I think does have a feel of a holiday home, which I'm not sure
0:35:33 > 0:35:37is right for me really, but I can see its potential for renting.
0:35:37 > 0:35:40I love the outside of the house and I think I would be a little bit
0:35:40 > 0:35:43greedy in fact and I think I would like the whole house for myself.
0:35:43 > 0:35:47So that the elegant hallway should lead into elegant...drawing room
0:35:47 > 0:35:52and an elegant kitchen and it doesn't do that. Those things are upstairs.
0:35:52 > 0:35:55There's a lot to think about with this house.
0:35:55 > 0:35:57I think you have to go away and think.
0:35:57 > 0:36:00Ah, ladies, I wondered whether I'd lost you forever.
0:36:00 > 0:36:03- Have you lost your heart to this home?- Maybe.
0:36:03 > 0:36:05Ooh, look, she's playing hard to get now.
0:36:05 > 0:36:08- She's not giving too much away, is she, Dorothy?- No.
0:36:08 > 0:36:10Cards close to the chest.
0:36:10 > 0:36:12- Well, got to make a move now, let's hit the road.- OK.
0:36:15 > 0:36:19Janice's long-distance move is about a complete change of lifestyle
0:36:19 > 0:36:20as much as a new house
0:36:20 > 0:36:25so I'm taking her and Dorothy to this old stone farmhouse
0:36:25 > 0:36:27just outside Amandola
0:36:27 > 0:36:31that's currently being converted into a home by two British expats
0:36:31 > 0:36:36who swapped rural Northumberland for rural Italian two years ago.
0:36:36 > 0:36:39David and Jane both feel passionately about organic
0:36:39 > 0:36:41and self-sufficient living
0:36:41 > 0:36:44so their first-hand expertise of the local soil
0:36:44 > 0:36:48and soul of Le Marche should be invaluable to Janice
0:36:48 > 0:36:51and her vision for a healthier life out here.
0:36:51 > 0:36:53David and Jane, thank you for inviting us to your wonderful home.
0:36:53 > 0:36:55- You're welcome. - You're more than welcome.
0:36:55 > 0:36:59Very hospitable of you, and can I introduce you to Janice and Dorothy?
0:36:59 > 0:37:01And Janice here is hoping to move to the region.
0:37:01 > 0:37:04You've chosen a lovely region of Italy, Le Marche is wonderful.
0:37:04 > 0:37:06I think you three are kindred spirits.
0:37:06 > 0:37:09You've got a lot in common and perhaps this
0:37:09 > 0:37:12is your opportunity to find out a little bit more about the area.
0:37:12 > 0:37:15- Absolutely.- Dorothy, do you fancy a cup of tea?
0:37:15 > 0:37:20- I do, we should leave them.- Come on, then. Lovely, thank you.- OK, bye.
0:37:20 > 0:37:24Back in the UK, David worked for a non-profit organisation
0:37:24 > 0:37:27giving advice to farmers and rural communities.
0:37:27 > 0:37:30He and Jane spent eight months touring Italy
0:37:30 > 0:37:33before deciding on their farmhouse in Le Marche,
0:37:33 > 0:37:36complete with 13 acres of land where they've planted
0:37:36 > 0:37:40an organic vegetable garden with pumpkins ready to be picked.
0:37:41 > 0:37:44This one's probably good enough for some soup.
0:37:44 > 0:37:46And what are the green ones, then, Jane?
0:37:46 > 0:37:49They are an Italian variety of pumpkin.
0:37:49 > 0:37:52Everything we grow we want to grow organically
0:37:52 > 0:37:55because I'm a great believer in your food is your medicine.
0:37:55 > 0:37:58- Absolutely...- It's your health. - ..yes, that's how I think, too.
0:37:58 > 0:38:01One of the key things we've learnt this year is you need to
0:38:01 > 0:38:04avoid July and August, because if the plant's not big enough
0:38:04 > 0:38:07- it just burns off completely... - It will burn.- ..under the sunshine
0:38:07 > 0:38:10so you've got to get your plants in the ground in the spring
0:38:10 > 0:38:12so that they're established enough to see themselves through
0:38:12 > 0:38:16the summer because it's pretty... you know, 35-plus is a good summer.
0:38:16 > 0:38:19Because we've never grown in this type of climate before
0:38:19 > 0:38:22and we've got to cope with the mountains, the wind,
0:38:22 > 0:38:26the cold, cold winters but then the hot, hot summers.
0:38:26 > 0:38:29- And the pests will be different here as well.- Yes, absolutely.
0:38:29 > 0:38:30Yes, the bugs are bigger.
0:38:30 > 0:38:32So what we'll do now, Janice, we'll go up to the house
0:38:32 > 0:38:36and we'll have a go at cooking some pumpkin soup with this pumpkin.
0:38:36 > 0:38:39In Italian, this is a "zucca"
0:38:39 > 0:38:42- and so we're going to cook "zuppa di zucca".- OK.
0:38:42 > 0:38:44- OK?- OK, great.
0:38:45 > 0:38:50Leaving Dorothy and I to get lost in the scenic surroundings, the green-fingered trio
0:38:50 > 0:38:53are peeling and chopping the freshly picked pumpkin.
0:38:53 > 0:38:56Obviously we like to grow lots of vegetables but we like to try
0:38:56 > 0:38:59and buy other grains and flour
0:38:59 > 0:39:03and all sorts of things which are organic and
0:39:03 > 0:39:06we've actually been very fortunate to meet up with a group of people.
0:39:06 > 0:39:11- It's a sustainable buying group. - OK, like a cooperative or...?
0:39:11 > 0:39:14Yes, it's a set of like-minded people who want to buy...
0:39:14 > 0:39:19who want to source their product, we're talking rice, pasta, cheese.
0:39:19 > 0:39:21I mean, so far we're the only non-Italians in the group...
0:39:21 > 0:39:25- Oh, OK.- ..which makes the meetings challenging.
0:39:25 > 0:39:29The chopped pumpkin is sauteed with onion, ginger, garlic,
0:39:29 > 0:39:32carrot and celery and cooked in an organic stock
0:39:32 > 0:39:35for about 45 minutes before it's ready to be served.
0:39:38 > 0:39:41Oh, looking forward to this!
0:39:41 > 0:39:43"Zuppa di zucca."
0:39:43 > 0:39:45- The fruits of our labour.- Oh, wow.
0:39:45 > 0:39:48- That looks delicious.- Bellissimo. - How often can you eat outside?
0:39:48 > 0:39:52Well, I think from about May to October.
0:39:52 > 0:39:54Then how cold does it get in the winter here?
0:39:54 > 0:39:57We had snow last year in the first week of December
0:39:57 > 0:39:59to the end of March.
0:39:59 > 0:40:03At this height you don't see so many vines and so many olives.
0:40:03 > 0:40:05- Uh-huh, OK.- So you have to think about those things,
0:40:05 > 0:40:07the height of your land.
0:40:07 > 0:40:11But, once you'd picked the house, how easy has it been to integrate?
0:40:11 > 0:40:14We always knew that that would be quite a big challenge.
0:40:14 > 0:40:17It's not easy because we don't speak fluent Italian
0:40:17 > 0:40:21- and I don't know how your Italian is.- Not so good.
0:40:21 > 0:40:24And of course, you have to cope with the dialects as well.
0:40:24 > 0:40:26- It's not only the Italian, it's the dialects.- Yes.
0:40:26 > 0:40:29At the moment for example, you're doing your house up.
0:40:29 > 0:40:32Do you have to make an adjustment? You know, the way that people
0:40:32 > 0:40:34do things in different countries, certainly in Italy.
0:40:34 > 0:40:37Paperwork perhaps takes a little longer, having said that,
0:40:37 > 0:40:41- our permission only took two weeks...- Oh!- ..from submission
0:40:41 > 0:40:44to approval, which I think would probably be difficult to be beaten.
0:40:44 > 0:40:47We then selected the builders, that took a bit of time.
0:40:47 > 0:40:49I think you just have to realise that
0:40:49 > 0:40:51you're in this for the long term.
0:40:51 > 0:40:54Janice might have mentioned she wants to run a business out here
0:40:54 > 0:40:57which is successful in the UK but transferring it to Italy
0:40:57 > 0:40:59- is another thing, isn't it? - Yes, it is.
0:40:59 > 0:41:02- And also you're going to need staff. - Yes, I'll eventually need some staff.
0:41:02 > 0:41:05Oh, right. Well, I think anything that gives somebody a local job that
0:41:05 > 0:41:07isn't really agricultural-based would be most welcome.
0:41:07 > 0:41:12- Right, oh, good.- Has the country given you what you were looking for?
0:41:12 > 0:41:15Well, one of the wonderful things it gave me is, when we were
0:41:15 > 0:41:19touring around for eight months, I actually lost 20 kilos, which is...
0:41:19 > 0:41:20A good waistline!
0:41:20 > 0:41:24A good waistline, so it's already given me better health.
0:41:24 > 0:41:28I mean, the food and the quality of life is for me so much better.
0:41:28 > 0:41:30Well, listen, thank you so much for the time, for the meal
0:41:30 > 0:41:32and for all the great advice.
0:41:32 > 0:41:36All the best with the house and we're waiting for the invite back,
0:41:36 > 0:41:39- aren't we? To see when it's finished.- Yes, see it finished.
0:41:39 > 0:41:41'As well as Jane and David's crucial advice,
0:41:41 > 0:41:44'hopefully Janice has also found some organic suppliers for her
0:41:44 > 0:41:49'business but she just has to find the right Le Marche house.'
0:41:49 > 0:41:52And before committing to any property purchase,
0:41:52 > 0:41:55there are a few things to remember.
0:41:55 > 0:41:58It's important to bear in mind that in Italy you need to put about
0:41:58 > 0:42:028% of the property price to one side for solicitors' costs,
0:42:02 > 0:42:05stamp duty and agents' fees.
0:42:05 > 0:42:08On top of the figure, you're paying for the house.
0:42:08 > 0:42:09When it comes to business,
0:42:09 > 0:42:12be aware that the country's complicated bureaucracy
0:42:12 > 0:42:16means there's likely to be piles of official documents to comprehend
0:42:16 > 0:42:20and even taxes to pay before starting up.
0:42:20 > 0:42:23Finally, as with any legal transaction,
0:42:23 > 0:42:27be sure to seek sound professional advice.
0:42:34 > 0:42:39It's the final day of our house hunting mission in Le Marche, Italy,
0:42:39 > 0:42:41but before we get back to house business
0:42:41 > 0:42:44our ladies are taking a little time out to hit the boutiques
0:42:44 > 0:42:47in the village of Ripatransone.
0:42:48 > 0:42:50- Buongiorno.- Buongiorno.
0:42:53 > 0:42:57- Look at this. The knitwear's always so lovely.- Oh, this is you, Janice.
0:42:57 > 0:43:02Don't temp me, I can't afford it. I'm buying houses.
0:43:02 > 0:43:04Oh, I love this bag.
0:43:05 > 0:43:11SHE SPEAKS IN ITALIAN
0:43:12 > 0:43:14Ah, OK.
0:43:18 > 0:43:24Ah, crochet! This is clever, really, really nice.
0:43:24 > 0:43:26OK, I think we'll come back.
0:43:26 > 0:43:30SHE SPEAKS IN ITALIAN
0:43:30 > 0:43:33- Thank you.- Arrivederci. - Arrivederci!
0:43:33 > 0:43:36- I'll be coming back here, Dorothy. - Oh, I'm sure.
0:43:36 > 0:43:41- If the house we see today is in this area.- Wow, yes.- Fantastic.
0:43:41 > 0:43:45After near temptation from some stylish handmade accessories,
0:43:45 > 0:43:47it's time to find out if the final property
0:43:47 > 0:43:50will clinch that elusive sale.
0:43:54 > 0:43:56With this house hunt here in Italy,
0:43:56 > 0:43:59we've certainly heard plenty of plaudits for our properties from
0:43:59 > 0:44:04Janice and Dorothy but my question is, are they just being polite?
0:44:04 > 0:44:08So let's see how we get on with our mystery house today,
0:44:08 > 0:44:12because hopefully this could be Janice's perfect Italian retreat.
0:44:15 > 0:44:17And for the mystery house we're staying in
0:44:17 > 0:44:19the village of Ripatransone,
0:44:19 > 0:44:22which is our closest location to the coast.
0:44:22 > 0:44:25Boasting almost unreal views of the surrounding landscape
0:44:25 > 0:44:29with colours that contrast ploughed farmland against lush vineyards,
0:44:29 > 0:44:33the village of Ripatransone clings to the hillside.
0:44:33 > 0:44:36Facilities include restaurants and shops as well as
0:44:36 > 0:44:43the narrowest alleyway in all of Italy, just 43cm wide.
0:44:43 > 0:44:45A short walk down a hill from the village,
0:44:45 > 0:44:48our final property is a former farmhouse which has been remodelled
0:44:48 > 0:44:52into something a little less conventional that is certainly not
0:44:52 > 0:44:55the traditional property Janice asked for.
0:44:55 > 0:44:58Just take a look at the property itself
0:44:58 > 0:45:02and then just move your eyes to the right. What can you see?
0:45:02 > 0:45:06- The views, fantastic. - A spectacular view!- Fantastic.
0:45:06 > 0:45:11- It's the best view we've seen so far.- Absolutely.- It's incredible.
0:45:11 > 0:45:15So are you wondering why we brought you here for our mystery house?
0:45:15 > 0:45:17- Are you intrigued?- Mm-hm. - Absolutely, yes.
0:45:17 > 0:45:22Well, it's not on one level, although it looks like it could be,
0:45:22 > 0:45:26- and I would say the inside, the layout is quite eccentric.- OK.
0:45:26 > 0:45:29You can see there's a front door there, we're not going to go through
0:45:29 > 0:45:32there, we're going to go to the other side of the property and enter
0:45:32 > 0:45:36it that way. Just before we do, how do you both fancy dining outside?
0:45:36 > 0:45:41You've got a wonderful pizza oven, sit outside, enjoy the views.
0:45:41 > 0:45:46You could probably eat there, I would say, nine months of the year.
0:45:46 > 0:45:51- Right, very good.- So for the last time, shall we get started?- Yes.
0:45:55 > 0:45:57So...
0:45:57 > 0:46:01this entrance we enter straight into the living area.
0:46:01 > 0:46:06- Oh, this is completely different. - Isn't it?- Completely, yeah.
0:46:06 > 0:46:11- It's quite modern, isn't it?- Yes. - And so clean-cut.
0:46:11 > 0:46:13It's hard to believe this used to be an old farmhouse.
0:46:13 > 0:46:17Built around the 1900s and 20 years ago a Chilean architect
0:46:17 > 0:46:20- completely transformed it to make it into a home.- Uh-huh.
0:46:20 > 0:46:23Janice, you haven't said an awful lot.
0:46:23 > 0:46:27- I'm reserving my judgment so far. - It's not quite hitting it for you?
0:46:27 > 0:46:31- Yeah, it's different. It's just so different from what we've seen.- Yeah.
0:46:31 > 0:46:33So it's a bit of a shock.
0:46:33 > 0:46:36And just through here is our kitchen.
0:46:37 > 0:46:43I think the kitchen's got quite a rural feel to it. Country?
0:46:43 > 0:46:45Think the wood is great, the original, you know,
0:46:45 > 0:46:48where the architect's put the beams across here.
0:46:48 > 0:46:52This is fantastic, but the tiles, I really don't like those tiles.
0:46:52 > 0:46:54I think it's got its own appeal
0:46:54 > 0:46:58- but I think it could also be ready for a make-over.- Absolutely.- Yeah.
0:46:58 > 0:47:04- Yes.- Big enough space to work with? - I think so, yes. Space-wise it's OK.
0:47:04 > 0:47:06And just look at the size of that table.
0:47:06 > 0:47:09- Dorothy, can you imagine Christmas here?- Yes.
0:47:09 > 0:47:13I particularly like the door with the access out onto that terrace.
0:47:13 > 0:47:15That's nice, yeah, that's nice.
0:47:15 > 0:47:17Is it beginning to win you over or are you still nonplussed?
0:47:17 > 0:47:19I'm still...
0:47:19 > 0:47:21- in two minds really. - OK, all right.
0:47:21 > 0:47:23Despite the proportions,
0:47:23 > 0:47:28sadly Janice is clearly struggling with her enthusiasm for this house.
0:47:28 > 0:47:33Upstairs there's a large fully tiled bathroom and three bedrooms,
0:47:33 > 0:47:35one a single room, there's also a twin,
0:47:35 > 0:47:38leaving the last one just for Janice.
0:47:38 > 0:47:42So, Janice, let's see if the upstairs can change your mind.
0:47:42 > 0:47:47This would be the master, it has a balcony, sensational views.
0:47:47 > 0:47:51The views are fantastic but I don't feel it's the house for me.
0:47:51 > 0:47:54Do you think it might be, just a thought, the decor?
0:47:54 > 0:47:59No, I think it's the inherent style the house has been designed with,
0:47:59 > 0:48:03I think that's what's doing it for me really, or not doing it for me.
0:48:03 > 0:48:06What you probably haven't noticed is that it's actually three storeys.
0:48:06 > 0:48:09In actual fact there's a third floor underneath.
0:48:09 > 0:48:14The very basement is an additional bedroom with another single.
0:48:14 > 0:48:19You've also got an open-plan work space and another bathroom.
0:48:19 > 0:48:22Ah, OK, so there's a lot of space here.
0:48:22 > 0:48:24Loads of space, lots of bedrooms.
0:48:24 > 0:48:27- Still hasn't done it for you, has it?- No.- I'm trying, Janice!
0:48:27 > 0:48:28I'm so trying.
0:48:28 > 0:48:32Let's go outside, because if anything is going to win you over
0:48:32 > 0:48:34with our mystery house, it is that view.
0:48:35 > 0:48:39Outside, the grounds are on sloped land across various levels
0:48:39 > 0:48:44that cover just under five acres of mature woodland and olive groves.
0:48:46 > 0:48:49See, I thought I'd bring you out here to tease you with the Jacuzzi
0:48:49 > 0:48:53but also, in more seriousness, that you can actually take in
0:48:53 > 0:48:56- that spectacular view. - Absolutely fantastic.
0:48:56 > 0:49:00Yes, it has the farmland rolling up towards the mountains.
0:49:00 > 0:49:06- It's something that is quite unique. - Yeah, it is, very.
0:49:06 > 0:49:08- So the location works? - The location is fantastic,
0:49:08 > 0:49:12I just need to find a house which suits me inside.
0:49:12 > 0:49:16Yeah. Well, let's see if our price makes any difference.
0:49:16 > 0:49:18I think about 65?
0:49:18 > 0:49:21- 650,000?- Yes.- OK.
0:49:21 > 0:49:25- OK, I think maybe higher. Probably 700.- OK.
0:49:25 > 0:49:27You are...
0:49:27 > 0:49:28Janice...
0:49:28 > 0:49:31£148,000 out.
0:49:31 > 0:49:36The asking price is £552,000.
0:49:36 > 0:49:39I'm hopeless.
0:49:39 > 0:49:40OK, OK.
0:49:40 > 0:49:42Now, I know your estimate was out
0:49:42 > 0:49:45but how do you feel about that as a figure for this house?
0:49:45 > 0:49:48Well, it's much better, of course, yes.
0:49:49 > 0:49:51It's way under your budget.
0:49:51 > 0:49:54Way under anything else that we've shown you, so
0:49:54 > 0:49:58go and take another look around, have a think, look at the land,
0:49:58 > 0:50:01the possibilities there for your business and, well,
0:50:01 > 0:50:04you'll find me enjoying this view, that's for sure.
0:50:04 > 0:50:05OK.
0:50:06 > 0:50:10She wasn't taken, Janice, with this property the moment we arrived
0:50:10 > 0:50:13but I think this house has so much going for it.
0:50:13 > 0:50:17I said at the beginning it's quite eccentric but with that much
0:50:17 > 0:50:20money left in the bank you could make this the most
0:50:20 > 0:50:24tremendous home in the most wonderful location.
0:50:26 > 0:50:30Our lowest-priced house of the lot, the contemporary mystery house
0:50:30 > 0:50:34is significantly under Janice's budget of £700,000.
0:50:48 > 0:50:52Oh, the outside is incredible.
0:50:52 > 0:50:56That view, it's like Eden, isn't it?
0:50:56 > 0:51:00The Garden of Eden out there. You couldn't have chosen a better place.
0:51:00 > 0:51:05It's just that the house does not fit Janice's needs.
0:51:07 > 0:51:09It's interesting to have this extra level
0:51:09 > 0:51:12and I prefer that fireplace to the one upstairs.
0:51:12 > 0:51:15- There's a lot of space, isn't there? - Yes.- But I'm not sure what you
0:51:15 > 0:51:19- would use it for. It's not making me change my mind.- No?- No.
0:51:19 > 0:51:24The village is lovely, I really like the village, and the property,
0:51:24 > 0:51:26it's great that it's so close to the village
0:51:26 > 0:51:30but from the beginning I didn't have a good feel about the property.
0:51:30 > 0:51:36It's too modern. I prefer the traditional Italian properties.
0:51:36 > 0:51:40This, I'm sure, will suit someone but it's not the house for me.
0:51:40 > 0:51:43Mmm, sunshine on your face, it just lifts your spirits.
0:51:43 > 0:51:46Right, ladies, how you feeling?
0:51:46 > 0:51:49- Because that's all our properties done.- Yeah, good, good.
0:51:49 > 0:51:52- Lots of information to take in. - Lots of information, yes. Dorothy?
0:51:52 > 0:51:56- Yeah, I think we're quite stunned. - Stunned in a good way?
0:51:56 > 0:52:01Oh, yes, because you have provided food for thought.
0:52:01 > 0:52:04Well, do you fancy going somewhere quiet where you can have
0:52:04 > 0:52:07a proper chat about everything that you've seen
0:52:07 > 0:52:09and then I'll catch up with you, how about that?
0:52:09 > 0:52:11Yes, OK.
0:52:15 > 0:52:19It could be said that the legacy of Le Marche's medieval towns
0:52:19 > 0:52:23was signed and sealed in Fabriano, as this area has been producing
0:52:23 > 0:52:28the finest leaves of paper in the world for more than seven centuries.
0:52:28 > 0:52:32So during the week I went to meet curator Claudia Grochetti
0:52:32 > 0:52:36at Fabriano's Museo della Carta to find out more.
0:52:36 > 0:52:40The production of paper started at the beginning of the 13th century
0:52:40 > 0:52:43and the Fabriano papermakers invented
0:52:43 > 0:52:47wonderful inventions. The first one is the hydraulic hammer mill,
0:52:47 > 0:52:51the first automatic machine in the history of paper.
0:52:51 > 0:52:53The second one is the watermark.
0:52:53 > 0:52:56So producing this high quality paper,
0:52:56 > 0:52:59- did it bring huge wealth to the town?- Yes, of course.
0:52:59 > 0:53:03We had 40 paper mills during the Middle Ages.
0:53:03 > 0:53:06It was very important for the economy of the town.
0:53:06 > 0:53:09Claudia, I must admit, I don't know how it's actually produced.
0:53:09 > 0:53:11Are you able to show me here at the museum?
0:53:11 > 0:53:14- Yes, of course I can show you. - I'd love to see it, thank you.- OK.
0:53:16 > 0:53:18Today's mass-produced paper is made from wood
0:53:18 > 0:53:20but up until the mid-19th century
0:53:20 > 0:53:23it was actually made from scraps of linen.
0:53:24 > 0:53:27The museum still employs this ancient method to create
0:53:27 > 0:53:31high-end, handmade paper, using an electric replica
0:53:31 > 0:53:35of a wooden multi-hammer mill that mashes the rags into a pulp.
0:53:36 > 0:53:40The hammers were moved by the camshaft,
0:53:40 > 0:53:43the camshaft by the wheel and the wheel by the water of the river.
0:53:43 > 0:53:46It was like a mill.
0:53:46 > 0:53:50The macerated rag pulp is transported into a large vat
0:53:50 > 0:53:53which is continually stirred to stop the liquid separating.
0:53:53 > 0:54:01We have 99% of water and only 1% of fibre and they move the fibres
0:54:01 > 0:54:06and the water to have always the fibres on the surface.
0:54:06 > 0:54:08So, Claudia, what's the next step?
0:54:08 > 0:54:11Yes, and now we have the paper maker, who is making
0:54:11 > 0:54:14the sheet by hand like the ancient tradition.
0:54:14 > 0:54:17Now, I also notice there's some emblems,
0:54:17 > 0:54:19some symbols on it as well.
0:54:19 > 0:54:21Yes, this is the watermark,
0:54:21 > 0:54:24the second invention made by the Fabriano paper makers.
0:54:24 > 0:54:28Standing here just looking at this watermark, every single bank note
0:54:28 > 0:54:32- throughout the world carries one... - Yes.- ..and it all started here
0:54:32 > 0:54:36- in Fabriano.- Today it's a very important security element.
0:54:36 > 0:54:38- Would you like to try? - I would love to.
0:54:38 > 0:54:40Here we go.
0:54:41 > 0:54:43- It's a little bit difficult to move.- Oh, yeah.
0:54:43 > 0:54:46The real secret of the production of paper
0:54:46 > 0:54:49is the hand of the paper maker, the movements.
0:54:49 > 0:54:53You'll have to lay the sheet on the woollen felt.
0:54:53 > 0:54:56- OK, it's very beautiful.- It is.
0:54:56 > 0:55:01And then after the pressing we put the sheet to dry by here.
0:55:04 > 0:55:07And how long would this take to dry, this one sheet of paper?
0:55:07 > 0:55:10It depends on the thickness of the sheet.
0:55:10 > 0:55:14The paper that we see today, do we still use the same raw ingredients?
0:55:14 > 0:55:18Today for the handmade production we use cotton from the plant.
0:55:18 > 0:55:23For the industrial production we use the wooden pulp.
0:55:23 > 0:55:26- Well, such history, such tradition.- Yes.
0:55:26 > 0:55:28- Amazing, thank you for explaining... - You're welcome.
0:55:28 > 0:55:32- ..the whole process to me.- It has been a pleasure.- Thank you.
0:55:36 > 0:55:39Now the tour is complete, I'm joining Janice and Dorothy
0:55:39 > 0:55:40for a drink to find out
0:55:40 > 0:55:45if any of our houses will make the Le Marche dream a reality.
0:55:45 > 0:55:49- So, Janice, Italy still the country you want to move to?- Oh, yes.
0:55:49 > 0:55:52We've really explored it further so I've got a good idea of what
0:55:52 > 0:55:54I can achieve here.
0:55:54 > 0:55:57So let's talk a little bit about the properties that we saw,
0:55:57 > 0:55:59the three of us.
0:55:59 > 0:56:03Have we got close, do we think, with any of them?
0:56:03 > 0:56:05Yes, the majority of the houses had the elegance
0:56:05 > 0:56:07and the style I'm looking for.
0:56:07 > 0:56:11Is there one property that we've got close to you wanting to live in?
0:56:11 > 0:56:13Yes and no, really.
0:56:13 > 0:56:17I mean, I keep on thinking about property number one
0:56:17 > 0:56:20because it had the flat land with the doors opening onto
0:56:20 > 0:56:21the flat terraces around the house.
0:56:21 > 0:56:24It was just beautifully elegant inside
0:56:24 > 0:56:27but property two was a little bit more polished inside
0:56:27 > 0:56:30so something between the two would be perfect really.
0:56:30 > 0:56:35You see, the second property, you would have to establish
0:56:35 > 0:56:39your identity on it in the garden and the land around.
0:56:39 > 0:56:43The first property, you didn't have to do that.
0:56:43 > 0:56:46So do you think our first house is worth another viewing?
0:56:46 > 0:56:49Yes, I would like to go back to look at the first house.
0:56:49 > 0:56:53I think I might have to rethink my plan a little because maybe,
0:56:53 > 0:56:57you know, with my business doing well, I could maybe extend the budget
0:56:57 > 0:57:01to pass that million mark if I was to wait a little bit.
0:57:01 > 0:57:04Yeah, it is a healthy budget but in this part of the world
0:57:04 > 0:57:06- vineyards are at a premium, aren't they?- Yes.- You know,
0:57:06 > 0:57:09boutique vineyards have a very high price.
0:57:09 > 0:57:13Is there anything you've both taken from this experience?
0:57:13 > 0:57:17Well, I think probably Janice has learned what she doesn't want
0:57:17 > 0:57:21as well as what she does want and I think that's always very useful.
0:57:21 > 0:57:26- Yes. Well, thank you both very much. We wish you all the best.- Thank you.
0:57:26 > 0:57:27I know it will work out for you
0:57:27 > 0:57:31- and, Dorothy, I know you've really helped Janice.- I hope so.
0:57:31 > 0:57:34At least we know where we're going to come on holiday next time,
0:57:34 > 0:57:36- don't we?- Exactly, yes.
0:57:38 > 0:57:41So that's the end of our journey here in Le Marche
0:57:41 > 0:57:45and, although we didn't manage to secure a house sale for Janice,
0:57:45 > 0:57:48what we have discovered over the last few days is you can buy
0:57:48 > 0:57:52a magnificent home here on her budget
0:57:52 > 0:57:55and, if Janice still harbours that dream and desire
0:57:55 > 0:57:58to own her own vineyard and orchard,
0:57:58 > 0:58:02it will require a major rethink of her investment.
0:58:02 > 0:58:06So, from a very sunny and glorious Italy, ciao.
0:58:09 > 0:58:12If you would like to escape to the Continent and need our help,
