0:00:02 > 0:00:05At 7,000 years old, this burial chamber and the standing stones
0:00:05 > 0:00:09around it are older than the ancient pyramids of Egypt.
0:00:09 > 0:00:11And reveal a British link so strong,
0:00:11 > 0:00:15this region is affectionately named Little Britain.
0:00:15 > 0:00:17So find out which country I'm in, in just a moment,
0:00:17 > 0:00:19as we escape to the continent.
0:00:39 > 0:00:42Today, we're helping a couple wanting more space
0:00:42 > 0:00:45to create their very own slice of horsey heaven.
0:00:45 > 0:00:47These floors, you could play tennis in here!
0:00:47 > 0:00:53And, exploring a new life in a new land comes with lots of surprises.
0:00:53 > 0:00:56- Oh, we're not greedy, but I'm quite pleased about that.- Yeah!
0:00:56 > 0:00:59In fact, it may all seem too good to be true.
0:00:59 > 0:01:01Oh, sorry, I'm going to cry.
0:01:06 > 0:01:09Today, I'm in Brittany, in the northwest of France,
0:01:09 > 0:01:12and this is the Cairn de Barnenez,
0:01:12 > 0:01:15one of the oldest megalithic mausoleums in the world.
0:01:15 > 0:01:19Now, both this mound and the standing stones around it
0:01:19 > 0:01:22form part of a bigger collection that stretches along
0:01:22 > 0:01:25the Atlantic Coast from Western France
0:01:25 > 0:01:28through Cornwall, Wales, and Ireland.
0:01:28 > 0:01:31No-one knows exactly why this was built,
0:01:31 > 0:01:34but it shows the close connection between our Celtic ancestors
0:01:34 > 0:01:38who migrated to this region over 1,000 years ago.
0:01:38 > 0:01:43So, it's no surprise this stunning location today still draws thousands
0:01:43 > 0:01:47of British families looking to call this area home.
0:01:49 > 0:01:53Set in the northwest portion of our nearest continental neighbour,
0:01:53 > 0:01:56Brittany covers over 13,000 square miles
0:01:56 > 0:01:58of French coast and countryside.
0:01:59 > 0:02:02The most southerly of the six Celtic nations,
0:02:02 > 0:02:05strong historic ties with the British Isles are reinforced
0:02:05 > 0:02:09by the fact that the two counties are only separated
0:02:09 > 0:02:12by 100 miles of the English channel.
0:02:12 > 0:02:15What's more, there's something about the Brittany's scenic landscape
0:02:15 > 0:02:17that's strangely familiar.
0:02:17 > 0:02:22Wide, sandy, and serene beaches are reminiscent of vistas in Cornwall,
0:02:22 > 0:02:25and the native tongue is closely related
0:02:25 > 0:02:27to the Cornish and Welsh languages.
0:02:28 > 0:02:321,500 miles of intricate coastline brought with them a strong fishing
0:02:32 > 0:02:34and seafaring tradition.
0:02:34 > 0:02:37Then, further inland, the scenery transforms to heathland,
0:02:37 > 0:02:42farmland, and peaceful rural villages with charming traditional
0:02:42 > 0:02:45Breton farmhouses that offer exceptional value for money.
0:02:46 > 0:02:50And, it's the affordability coupled with a strong cultural connection
0:02:50 > 0:02:53that's a major draw to many British house buyers.
0:02:56 > 0:02:59So, how is this all reflected in the property prices?
0:02:59 > 0:03:03Well, your money will go a long way in this part of France.
0:03:03 > 0:03:08The average house here costs £132,000.
0:03:08 > 0:03:12Now that's a staggering 50% less than the UK average.
0:03:12 > 0:03:15And, if you fancy keeping some animals,
0:03:15 > 0:03:17well, that won't break the bank either.
0:03:17 > 0:03:20An acre of pasture land is just 9%,
0:03:20 > 0:03:24yes, 9%, of what you would pay across the Channel.
0:03:24 > 0:03:27So, with that in mind, it's little wonder today's
0:03:27 > 0:03:30buyers are keen to see what's on offer here.
0:03:31 > 0:03:34Born and bred in the Midlands, Paul and his wife Lindsay
0:03:34 > 0:03:36have been married for 20 years,
0:03:36 > 0:03:40and first laid eyes on one another when they were both students.
0:03:40 > 0:03:44We met at university at Nottingham...at a party.
0:03:44 > 0:03:48We literally bumped into each other in a corridor, and actually the rest
0:03:48 > 0:03:52of that story's probably not suitable for television, to be fairly honest.
0:03:54 > 0:03:56So, yeah, it was nearly 30 years ago.
0:03:56 > 0:04:00Our first date was in Pizzaland, Nottingham, cos I'm a class act.
0:04:02 > 0:04:03For the past six years,
0:04:03 > 0:04:06they've lived in this Northamptonshire barn conversion
0:04:06 > 0:04:08that they share with their pet dog, Portland.
0:04:08 > 0:04:11But, there's a larger four-legged motive that's prompting them
0:04:11 > 0:04:14to seek a bigger property across the Channel.
0:04:14 > 0:04:18I started endurance riding about seven years ago with my only horse,
0:04:18 > 0:04:22Redwin, and it's an absolutely massive thing in France.
0:04:22 > 0:04:24They are the best in the world at it,
0:04:24 > 0:04:26so it would be a really good place to be based.
0:04:26 > 0:04:29Endurance riding is controlled long-distance cross-country
0:04:29 > 0:04:33racing on horseback, and Lindsay competes at an international level,
0:04:33 > 0:04:37with ambitions to improve her sporting standard further.
0:04:37 > 0:04:39But, Lindsay doesn't have the space to keep her horse
0:04:39 > 0:04:42at their existing property. So, she has high hopes that
0:04:42 > 0:04:47a move to Brittany will afford them more land for even more horses.
0:04:47 > 0:04:50I started looking online at equestrian properties in France
0:04:50 > 0:04:52and just couldn't believe what you could actually
0:04:52 > 0:04:54get for your money over there.
0:04:54 > 0:04:57The basic financial reason of freeing up
0:04:57 > 0:04:59the equity in paying off the mortgage is attractive in itself,
0:04:59 > 0:05:02but the lifestyle also would also be great...
0:05:02 > 0:05:06more land, more animals, possibly if we're running a business,
0:05:06 > 0:05:09you know a holiday business...more people to meet.
0:05:09 > 0:05:12And the beautiful food and rather nice wine as well
0:05:12 > 0:05:14that comes from France.
0:05:15 > 0:05:18Both parties have enjoyed many holidays in France,
0:05:18 > 0:05:21but this potential move is a huge leap of faith,
0:05:21 > 0:05:25as neither of them have actually been to Brittany before.
0:05:25 > 0:05:27There was an awful lot to find out, know, and understand,
0:05:27 > 0:05:30and we are quite naive about the French property market
0:05:30 > 0:05:32and everything that the move would entail.
0:05:32 > 0:05:35I mean, we both got school boy, school girl French,
0:05:35 > 0:05:38and when I bought a few books to sort of bone up before the trip,
0:05:38 > 0:05:43I was actually surprised at how much it came back.
0:05:43 > 0:05:45When it comes to the new French property,
0:05:45 > 0:05:48our buyers hoped to find something similar to their current home,
0:05:48 > 0:05:50which has a large, sociable kitchen-diner
0:05:50 > 0:05:53where they love entertaining with friends and family.
0:05:56 > 0:05:59The type of property we are looking for would be traditional,
0:05:59 > 0:06:02not modern...would be rural...
0:06:02 > 0:06:07Yes, we don't really do contemporary, I don't think, or modern, new builds.
0:06:07 > 0:06:12The house has to have a nice fire or wood burner in the main living area.
0:06:12 > 0:06:16The one thing about this property that it lacks is land, basically,
0:06:16 > 0:06:20and being able to see my horses in a field outside the window
0:06:20 > 0:06:21would be just fantastic.
0:06:21 > 0:06:25Luckily for Lindsay, she was able to take early retirement
0:06:25 > 0:06:26from a career in publishing.
0:06:26 > 0:06:30So, she can dedicate all her time to her beloved horses and sport.
0:06:30 > 0:06:32But, Paul is self-employed
0:06:32 > 0:06:36and aims to keep working, despite a move to the continent.
0:06:36 > 0:06:38I work in intellectual property rights licensing,
0:06:38 > 0:06:42so I broker agreements between people who own
0:06:42 > 0:06:44famous brands and characters
0:06:44 > 0:06:49and people who make things like video games, clothes, etc.
0:06:49 > 0:06:52In terms of meetings, I have to probably go to London
0:06:52 > 0:06:56fairly regularly, but that wouldn't be impossible from abroad.
0:06:56 > 0:06:57These days with technology,
0:06:57 > 0:07:00it's really easy to keep in touch with people.
0:07:00 > 0:07:03The plan is to sell up their barn to finance the move,
0:07:03 > 0:07:07and they have a clear idea of what they're willing to spend
0:07:07 > 0:07:08on the new French menage.
0:07:08 > 0:07:11Our budget for this project is £250,000.
0:07:15 > 0:07:18As Lindsay and Paul are looking for an equestrian property with
0:07:18 > 0:07:22good access to bridleways, we are focusing the house search
0:07:22 > 0:07:24on the more rural areas inland.
0:07:25 > 0:07:28And now our couple have arrived here in France, we're meeting up
0:07:28 > 0:07:32to finalise the details of their planned continental move.
0:07:33 > 0:07:36- It's the first time you've actually been here!- Yes, that's right.
0:07:36 > 0:07:39So, why Brittany? Why the appeal?
0:07:39 > 0:07:41Well, I'm into endurance riding at home,
0:07:41 > 0:07:43and when we looked at France there were two areas
0:07:43 > 0:07:45that were perfect for it.
0:07:45 > 0:07:48One is Brittany, and one is Limousin, in the middle.
0:07:48 > 0:07:51But, Brittany is like South Cornwall, it's close to home,
0:07:51 > 0:07:52so that looked like the perfect area.
0:07:52 > 0:07:55I mean, it is beautiful around here, isn't it?
0:07:55 > 0:07:58And, I know the horses are a big part of your lives.
0:07:58 > 0:08:01Paul, are they as important for you as they are for Lindsay?
0:08:01 > 0:08:02Definitely not!
0:08:04 > 0:08:07- I'm really here to crew and fund the whole enterprise.- Really?
0:08:07 > 0:08:10Well, when you're taking part in the events that she takes part in,
0:08:10 > 0:08:12you really do need a support team.
0:08:12 > 0:08:14It's a bit like a pit stop crew in Formula One.
0:08:14 > 0:08:18They come in occasionally needing feeding, and watering, and checking.
0:08:18 > 0:08:21So, that's my main role is looking after the crew
0:08:21 > 0:08:22when we're on a riding event.
0:08:22 > 0:08:26So, let's talk about the house, this all-important house, and land.
0:08:26 > 0:08:29What exactly are you after?
0:08:29 > 0:08:32Well, the land has got to come first, that our top priority,
0:08:32 > 0:08:34so, land and stables.
0:08:34 > 0:08:36A nice traditional style house
0:08:36 > 0:08:39because that's what we've always looked for in the UK,
0:08:39 > 0:08:43and the icing on the cake would be if there was some kind of gite or
0:08:43 > 0:08:46a little cottage that could provide maybe a bit of rental income.
0:08:46 > 0:08:49So, how much land are we talking ideally?
0:08:49 > 0:08:52I think it's about 10 acres is what Lindsay's got in mind
0:08:52 > 0:08:54for the horses in the stabling with paddocks.
0:08:54 > 0:08:56We have a dog, so it would be really nice to have
0:08:56 > 0:08:59a boot room type of place where we can wipe him down after a walk
0:08:59 > 0:09:01instead of dragging all the mud into the house.
0:09:01 > 0:09:03So, is there any leeway on the budget?
0:09:03 > 0:09:04For that perfect house, yes,
0:09:04 > 0:09:07I'm sure we would be able to find a little bit of leeway.
0:09:07 > 0:09:09Good, that perfect house... I can feel the pressure!
0:09:09 > 0:09:11Let's see if we can convince you this is the place
0:09:11 > 0:09:15you want to move to with that dream house with land attached.
0:09:15 > 0:09:17- Come on, let's go.- Fantastic.
0:09:19 > 0:09:23On a budget of £250,000 or thereabouts,
0:09:23 > 0:09:26our buyers are after a traditional, rural property
0:09:26 > 0:09:30with a country kitchen-diner, a wood burner, and a boot room.
0:09:30 > 0:09:33The accompanying land needs to be broadly 10 acres,
0:09:33 > 0:09:35ideally with stables.
0:09:35 > 0:09:39And, the potential for a gite to generate extra income
0:09:39 > 0:09:40would be a real bonus.
0:09:40 > 0:09:43We found a range of attractive, Breton properties to tempt them,
0:09:43 > 0:09:46but I'll be keeping a price a guessing game
0:09:46 > 0:09:48until the end of each tour.
0:09:48 > 0:09:51To finish up, they'd better hold their horses for the mystery house,
0:09:51 > 0:09:55a property which will push their rural aspirations to the limit.
0:09:55 > 0:09:59Our buyers are new to the area, so we'll also be giving them
0:09:59 > 0:10:02a hands-on experience of everyday Breton life.
0:10:02 > 0:10:05There'll also be the chance to meet locals to arm them
0:10:05 > 0:10:08with a better awareness of French customs and culture before
0:10:08 > 0:10:11they make a permanent commitment to this relocation.
0:10:15 > 0:10:17We're kicking off the property search
0:10:17 > 0:10:20right in the heart of Brittany, near the village of Mellionnec.
0:10:23 > 0:10:27Less than 500 residents live behind by vibrantly coloured shutters
0:10:27 > 0:10:28in traditional stone properties.
0:10:30 > 0:10:33Every two years, the community in Mellionnec swells
0:10:33 > 0:10:36when artists from all over Brittany flock here to create
0:10:36 > 0:10:41striking installations in public spaces and private gardens.
0:10:42 > 0:10:44As well as the fascinating sculptures,
0:10:44 > 0:10:49the village is also serviced by a restaurant, bar, and farm shop.
0:10:49 > 0:10:51And, in the outskirts of the village,
0:10:51 > 0:10:54and down a long country lane, lies a renovated farmhouse
0:10:54 > 0:10:56that dates back to the turn of the 20th century,
0:10:56 > 0:11:00and is the place we've chosen as our first house.
0:11:00 > 0:11:04So, Lindsay and Paul, how exciting! This is your first property.
0:11:05 > 0:11:08- Fantastic! No, it looks really lovely.- Yeah?- Yes, love the balcony.
0:11:08 > 0:11:10Do you like the approach?
0:11:10 > 0:11:14- I do love the approach. - Our own private lane.- I know!
0:11:14 > 0:11:17Well, you're right, actually, because it is a dead end...
0:11:17 > 0:11:19it's like a cul-de-sac here.
0:11:19 > 0:11:21- Is it? OK, nice.- Fantastic.
0:11:21 > 0:11:23- It's attractive, isn't it? - Yes, it is. Very attractive.
0:11:23 > 0:11:26And, the current owner has been here since 2008,
0:11:26 > 0:11:28and has done extensive work...
0:11:28 > 0:11:31And I'm talking re-wiring, you know, everything.
0:11:31 > 0:11:34So, as you can see, it does look in good condition.
0:11:34 > 0:11:38- It looks immaculate, it really does. - Has it got any land, then?
0:11:38 > 0:11:41Well, you never know, it might have. Well, let's step inside.
0:11:41 > 0:11:44- We'll start off with the house. Come on.- Fantastic.
0:11:46 > 0:11:49Built of granite, the accommodation is spread over three levels.
0:11:49 > 0:11:53We're starting in the main reception areas on the first floor.
0:11:55 > 0:11:59- So, come on in to your first property.- Can't wait to look inside!
0:11:59 > 0:12:01- You've been itching, haven't you?- I know!
0:12:01 > 0:12:05- So, as you can see, it's sort of an open plan layout.- Right, yes.
0:12:05 > 0:12:08- Dominated by this impressive fireplace.- It's very striking.
0:12:08 > 0:12:13Yes, very impressive fireplace, isn't it? It's a big space actually.
0:12:13 > 0:12:16From a practical point of view, any kind of hard flooring
0:12:16 > 0:12:19is great for the dog, and animals, and mud, and that kind of thing.
0:12:19 > 0:12:21So, beautiful wooden floors, actually.
0:12:21 > 0:12:25Yeah, these are the originals. 1912 they were put down. It's oak.
0:12:25 > 0:12:28Oh, oak floor...best, isn't it?
0:12:28 > 0:12:30You might notice a separate dining area there,
0:12:30 > 0:12:32as well as the open-plan-ness of the kitchen.
0:12:32 > 0:12:34So, two areas if you wanted to eat.
0:12:34 > 0:12:36Well, funny enough, our current house is,
0:12:36 > 0:12:39in a way, open plan like that. It flows just straight
0:12:39 > 0:12:43from the kitchen into the dining bit, and then the lounge area.
0:12:43 > 0:12:45- The all-important kitchen is next door.- Fantastic.
0:12:45 > 0:12:51- Who cooks in this relationship?- Me. - You're the chef?- Yes, I'm the chef.
0:12:51 > 0:12:56Really pleased to see a range because that's what I cook on at home.
0:12:56 > 0:12:58So, fabulous from a cooking point of view...
0:12:58 > 0:13:01The actual scale of it...it's not the biggest kitchen in the world,
0:13:01 > 0:13:04but it's big enough. It's as large as you need it to be.
0:13:04 > 0:13:06- Have you seen enough? Should we continue?- I think we can.
0:13:09 > 0:13:12The stairs are in a central hallway at the back of the property,
0:13:12 > 0:13:15and we're heading up to the second floor
0:13:15 > 0:13:18where a spacious landing upstairs leads to three bedrooms.
0:13:18 > 0:13:22Two of the bedrooms are served by a large modern family bathroom,
0:13:22 > 0:13:25leaving the biggest one potentially for Lindsay and Paul.
0:13:25 > 0:13:30And here is the all-important master bedroom.
0:13:30 > 0:13:34- And it also has an en-suite. - Oh, well look at that!- Fantastic.
0:13:34 > 0:13:37- We've never had one of those before, have we?- We haven't, no.
0:13:37 > 0:13:41Oh...once you've had an en-suite you're never going to go back.
0:13:41 > 0:13:45It's not as big as what we've got at home, but I like the beams.
0:13:45 > 0:13:48You're right, it's not the largest master bedroom,
0:13:48 > 0:13:52but luckily all the ceilings are about eight foot high.
0:13:52 > 0:13:54The doors seem oversized to me, as well.
0:13:54 > 0:13:57So, you do sort of get that spacious feeling. So...so far so good?
0:13:57 > 0:14:01- Yes, thank you very much. - Let's head back downstairs.
0:14:02 > 0:14:05The current owners kept horses themselves
0:14:05 > 0:14:07and had their equestrian lifestyle in mind
0:14:07 > 0:14:11when they designed the final story down on the ground floor.
0:14:12 > 0:14:17- Now, you might think that we've shown you everything...- Yes!
0:14:17 > 0:14:19But, as you can see, there's a little bit more.
0:14:19 > 0:14:22- A little bit more, yes. - An extra floor.
0:14:22 > 0:14:26- It's sort of a utility room/kitchen. - It is, yes. Interesting, yeah.
0:14:26 > 0:14:28So, you've got lots of space.
0:14:28 > 0:14:30Again, with the animals, with the dog...
0:14:30 > 0:14:33- might have more than one dog when you move...- You never know.
0:14:33 > 0:14:35A fantastic area to come in,
0:14:35 > 0:14:38leaving the rest of the house clean and tidy.
0:14:38 > 0:14:40And, there's a little bit more
0:14:40 > 0:14:44- because behind me you've got a proper boot room/tack room.- Oh!
0:14:44 > 0:14:48- You've got a downstairs shower. - Right.- Is this a bonus?
0:14:48 > 0:14:50Most definitely a bonus!
0:14:50 > 0:14:52Because we spend all our life tramping mud
0:14:52 > 0:14:54into the front door at the moment.
0:14:54 > 0:14:58So, a little back exit that you could do that with is a really good idea.
0:14:58 > 0:15:00Yeah, leave all the coats and shoes...
0:15:00 > 0:15:03- A little bit more still to show you. - OK.
0:15:09 > 0:15:12- We're about to find out... - Come on through.
0:15:12 > 0:15:14- I'll close the gate.- Yes, please.
0:15:18 > 0:15:24- So...- Stables! - You've got nine stables in total.
0:15:24 > 0:15:27This huge building, which as you can see is dry,
0:15:27 > 0:15:32which is very important. The land, which I know is just as important...
0:15:32 > 0:15:35- you have just over seven acres of land.- Oh, OK.
0:15:35 > 0:15:39- Let's take a look at that all-important land.- OK.
0:15:39 > 0:15:42And I'm also going to ask you a price as well.
0:15:42 > 0:15:44So, start thinking about that. Follow me.
0:15:46 > 0:15:49This first property doesn't come with holiday accommodation,
0:15:49 > 0:15:53but the large barn has far more stables than Lindsay requested,
0:15:53 > 0:15:57and room for more. So, they could be options.
0:15:57 > 0:16:00When it comes to land, there are four more lawned areas
0:16:00 > 0:16:02immediately surrounding the house,
0:16:02 > 0:16:04as well as some seven acres of paddocks
0:16:04 > 0:16:06bordered by mature trees and woodland.
0:16:08 > 0:16:13So, how much for the house, the land, and that huge barn?
0:16:13 > 0:16:14£200,000?
0:16:14 > 0:16:17I think it's going to be near the top end of our budget,
0:16:17 > 0:16:19so I'm going to say £240,000.
0:16:21 > 0:16:29- You're the closest. The asking price is just over £242,000.- Yes...- Right.
0:16:30 > 0:16:33- How do you feel about that? - I expected it, actually.
0:16:33 > 0:16:35Yeah, I did expect that.
0:16:35 > 0:16:37I would say go back and take a look at the house,
0:16:37 > 0:16:40- but I think the barn might win the day.- I think you might be right.
0:16:41 > 0:16:44- Give me a shout when you're ready. - OK.- Thank you.
0:16:46 > 0:16:48Well, I think Lindsay's face said it all.
0:16:48 > 0:16:52They want this new equestrian lifestyle, and our first property...
0:16:52 > 0:16:55well, I think it delivers on all fronts.
0:16:55 > 0:16:59My only concern...we've got a lot to beat now with house number two.
0:17:01 > 0:17:05Just under budget, the first option is a detached renovated
0:17:05 > 0:17:10three-storey farmhouse with open-plan living and kitchen areas,
0:17:10 > 0:17:12three bedrooms, a large utility room,
0:17:12 > 0:17:18an extensive barn with nine new stables, and seven acres of land.
0:17:18 > 0:17:22I think it's absolutely beautiful. Immaculately done out.
0:17:22 > 0:17:24A much higher standard than we were expecting.
0:17:24 > 0:17:27And, it's got more stables than I was expecting as well,
0:17:27 > 0:17:30so that's absolutely fantastic, too.
0:17:30 > 0:17:33- Look, a brand-new floor. - That's brilliant.
0:17:33 > 0:17:36And, the land is just beautiful. To die for.
0:17:36 > 0:17:39The actual setting is really nice, and the views are incredible,
0:17:39 > 0:17:42out across the fields and onto the trees over the hills there.
0:17:42 > 0:17:45And, the layout, the configuration, the outdoors space with the barn...
0:17:45 > 0:17:48It all works really well.
0:17:48 > 0:17:51- OK...you happy? You've seen enough? - Yes, thank you very much.
0:17:51 > 0:17:53Great start, really, wasn't it?
0:17:53 > 0:17:55A fantastic start, Nicki, really fantastic.
0:17:55 > 0:17:58- Because this is the first time you've been to Brittany.- Yes.
0:17:58 > 0:18:00And, it's important that, well...
0:18:00 > 0:18:03This is going to be your new way of life hopefully, not a holiday.
0:18:03 > 0:18:05- You're taking it seriously.- Yes.
0:18:05 > 0:18:07So, how do you feel, the two of you,
0:18:07 > 0:18:10of actually staying in a rental tonight?
0:18:10 > 0:18:12Let's put the hotel to one side.
0:18:12 > 0:18:15Let's find you somewhere that you can be on your own,
0:18:15 > 0:18:18- really absorb what this life is going to be like.- Oh, I see!
0:18:18 > 0:18:21- That's really intriguing. - That's really fantastic.
0:18:21 > 0:18:26- A bit of a surprise.- A big surprise! - We've got it all lined up...
0:18:26 > 0:18:28- OK...- Going to be on your own and see what life in Brittany
0:18:28 > 0:18:31- is truly like. - Brilliant, that's great.
0:18:38 > 0:18:40We've arranged for Lindsay and Paul
0:18:40 > 0:18:44to stay in a charming gite near the town of Gouarec.
0:18:44 > 0:18:48- This is nice.- Oh, it is. Oh, the big stone fireplace.
0:18:48 > 0:18:51The big stone fireplace with a wood burner. What about the kitchen?
0:18:51 > 0:18:54Yeah, that'll do, won't it? Let's go and explore upstairs.
0:18:54 > 0:18:56- Yes, indeed areas. - Oh, this is pretty.
0:18:56 > 0:18:58Oh, that's very nice, isn't it?
0:18:58 > 0:19:00And after they've had a good look around,
0:19:00 > 0:19:03they head out to a local supermarket to buy provisions
0:19:03 > 0:19:06and oil their rather rusty language skills.
0:19:06 > 0:19:07Bonjour.
0:19:07 > 0:19:09Onions...
0:19:09 > 0:19:13- What do you fancy? That, do you? - That'll be nice, thank you, sir.
0:19:13 > 0:19:15- Bonjour.- Bonjour.
0:19:20 > 0:19:21Merci.
0:19:23 > 0:19:25Au revoir.
0:19:26 > 0:19:30Laden down with supplies, they head back to prepare and cook a meal
0:19:30 > 0:19:34before sitting down to dinner and reflecting on the first property.
0:19:34 > 0:19:36- It's really small.- Hm.
0:19:36 > 0:19:41Now, what it did lack is the holiday gite potential property.
0:19:41 > 0:19:44No, there is that. But, there is always the glamping option
0:19:44 > 0:19:46that we had spoken about in the past.
0:19:46 > 0:19:48- Get some yurts in. - Get some yurts in, yes.
0:19:59 > 0:20:01It's early morning at the start of our second day
0:20:01 > 0:20:03of property hunting in Brittany.
0:20:03 > 0:20:06And, already the practical and financial realities
0:20:06 > 0:20:10of Lindsay and Paul's prospective move are starting to sink in.
0:20:12 > 0:20:14Having slept on what happened yesterday,
0:20:14 > 0:20:18it obviously throws a lot of questions in the air because
0:20:18 > 0:20:24we can afford to buy, but there is more to it than that, isn't there?
0:20:24 > 0:20:28Well, the question is, can we afford to live here once we've bought,
0:20:28 > 0:20:30so we need to understand more about
0:20:30 > 0:20:33- the financial set-up of taxation and so forth.- Yes.
0:20:34 > 0:20:37We know we can buy here, can we live here? That's the question.
0:20:40 > 0:20:43Good morning. You can hear it's early, can't you?
0:20:43 > 0:20:45Now, Paul and Lindsay have never been to Brittany before.
0:20:45 > 0:20:48We thought it was great for them to actually spend the night
0:20:48 > 0:20:52in the heart of the village to get the real French way of life.
0:20:52 > 0:20:55Let's see how they've got on. It's quite early...
0:20:57 > 0:20:58Good morning!
0:21:00 > 0:21:02- You're up... - Bonjour, madame!- Bonjour!
0:21:02 > 0:21:05- You're up bright and early this morning.- We are, absolutely.
0:21:05 > 0:21:08- So, how was your first night in the village?- It was lovely.
0:21:08 > 0:21:11Meet any of the villagers, any of your neighbours?
0:21:11 > 0:21:13- The immediate neighbours, yes. - Yeah, we did.
0:21:13 > 0:21:16Everyone has been really friendly and helpful.
0:21:16 > 0:21:18And what did you do last night? Did you go shopping?
0:21:18 > 0:21:20We did go shopping, yes.
0:21:20 > 0:21:23- How was your French?- Minimal. - But you got by?
0:21:23 > 0:21:25- We did.- Yes, un petit peu.
0:21:28 > 0:21:31Got plenty more to show you today, so let me close the door,
0:21:31 > 0:21:34lock up...should we get started?
0:21:34 > 0:21:35- Yes, please.- Great.
0:21:40 > 0:21:42For our next stop, we're heading four miles
0:21:42 > 0:21:44from the village of Langonnet.
0:21:45 > 0:21:47All the essential and luxury amenities can be found
0:21:47 > 0:21:49in this well-served village,
0:21:49 > 0:21:53including a post office, general store, bakers, and creperie.
0:21:54 > 0:21:58A few miles drive out of Langonnet into the quieter, rural wilds,
0:21:58 > 0:21:59we find out next house.
0:22:03 > 0:22:08Right...here we have our second property here in Brittany.
0:22:09 > 0:22:12And another very well-maintained one at that by the looks of it.
0:22:12 > 0:22:15Everything looks new...all the pointing in the roof.
0:22:15 > 0:22:19And, traditional style again, which is exactly what we wanted.
0:22:19 > 0:22:23Beautifully done, and again it gives you a sense of space.
0:22:23 > 0:22:25We're not overlooked at all by neighbours here.
0:22:25 > 0:22:27No, you're not, are you?
0:22:27 > 0:22:30Something that people strive for back in the UK.
0:22:30 > 0:22:31Indeed...hard to achieve.
0:22:31 > 0:22:35- Right, well, should we start with the house first?- Yes, please!
0:22:36 > 0:22:39Featuring a south-facing front aspect,
0:22:39 > 0:22:42this property was completely rebuilt in 2000,
0:22:42 > 0:22:46but using traditional materials to retain a rustic feel.
0:22:49 > 0:22:54So, the entrance leads straight into the main sitting area.
0:22:54 > 0:22:58Open plan, you've got reclaimed stone up there all exposed,
0:22:58 > 0:23:01which I think gives it quite a warmth.
0:23:01 > 0:23:04So, you've got this huge space here
0:23:04 > 0:23:07which leads into a massive conservatory.
0:23:07 > 0:23:11I call it conservatory, but it's actually got the slate roof as well.
0:23:11 > 0:23:17- Right, so it's like a garden room. - Overlooking paddocks and paddocks.
0:23:17 > 0:23:20And, I will tell you now the current owners bought this house
0:23:20 > 0:23:25because they could see all their land from literally every window.
0:23:25 > 0:23:29- That was what enticed them to buy it.- Yes, interesting.
0:23:29 > 0:23:31So, the open-plan-ness...
0:23:31 > 0:23:34it sort of continues over here with the kitchen.
0:23:36 > 0:23:38Perhaps not the largest kitchen,
0:23:38 > 0:23:43- but there's everything here that you need.- It is compact.
0:23:43 > 0:23:46On the ground for, we also have a huge utility room which
0:23:46 > 0:23:53leads us onto the garage/tack room as well. Mm-hmm! Yes.
0:23:53 > 0:23:54Can we have a little look at that?
0:23:54 > 0:23:58But, let's head upstairs, because I want to show you the bedrooms.
0:24:00 > 0:24:02Upstairs on the first floor,
0:24:02 > 0:24:06a large family bathroom serves four bedrooms in total.
0:24:06 > 0:24:10Two are large double rooms, then there's a single used as a study,
0:24:10 > 0:24:13and lastly, at the end of the landing, is the master bedroom.
0:24:15 > 0:24:18The recesses for the windows are lovely, aren't they?
0:24:18 > 0:24:20Looks like it's got a good view out of there,
0:24:20 > 0:24:21so, I think again we're going to
0:24:21 > 0:24:23look at the space, and not the decor.
0:24:23 > 0:24:28- This house at the moment...I think we would want to do a lot to it. - Yep.
0:24:28 > 0:24:30So, it's really going to depend on what you show us outside.
0:24:30 > 0:24:33O-o-o-h...she's sneaky, isn't she?
0:24:33 > 0:24:36She's done well, we've been here quite a while
0:24:36 > 0:24:38and we've just mentioned the land, haven't we?
0:24:38 > 0:24:41The all-important land. Well, now, it's a very valid point.
0:24:41 > 0:24:43So, on that note, Paul, if you wouldn't mind leading the way,
0:24:43 > 0:24:45let's head back downstairs...
0:24:45 > 0:24:46- OK.- And see what it has to offer.
0:24:48 > 0:24:51That ties up the accommodation for Lindsay and Paul,
0:24:51 > 0:24:54which just leaves the horses to be considered.
0:24:54 > 0:24:58And, there's a stable block with two stables to cater for them.
0:24:58 > 0:25:01There's also plenty of land for the horses,
0:25:01 > 0:25:05or even sheep and yurts, too...if they should so choose.
0:25:05 > 0:25:08There are eight acres of pasture and gardens adjoining the house,
0:25:08 > 0:25:12as well as an additional five separate acres of woodland nearby.
0:25:12 > 0:25:15But, of course, all of this comes at a cost.
0:25:15 > 0:25:17Who wants to go first?
0:25:17 > 0:25:20Lindsay has to go first because I was miles out yesterday.
0:25:21 > 0:25:24- You better get it right today. - Oh, probably won't.
0:25:24 > 0:25:27It's a difficult one because it is a nice property,
0:25:27 > 0:25:31there's a lot more to the property then there was yesterday,
0:25:31 > 0:25:32and it's got a lot more land,
0:25:32 > 0:25:35but I'm just thinking perhaps just a little bit less.
0:25:35 > 0:25:39- I'm going to go with £230,000. - Right.
0:25:39 > 0:25:41Yes, my thoughts are running along similar lines,
0:25:41 > 0:25:43and I'll come a bit under that at that, £220,000.
0:25:43 > 0:25:50Well, that's interesting because the asking price is just under £190,000.
0:25:50 > 0:25:53- No way!- See, you're pleasantly surprised with that, aren't you?
0:25:53 > 0:25:55Oh, that is ridiculous. That's amazing.
0:25:55 > 0:25:57That's a surprise, by comparison as well.
0:25:57 > 0:26:00So, why don't you start off with the all-important stable run,
0:26:00 > 0:26:02just for you, Lindsay.
0:26:02 > 0:26:06- Well, it's somewhat important. - Go on. Take your time.
0:26:08 > 0:26:10Paul, he is a remarkable man, isn't he?
0:26:10 > 0:26:13He's so supportive of Lindsay's passion.
0:26:13 > 0:26:16But, this move is about changing the way they live their lives...
0:26:16 > 0:26:19The horses play such an important role.
0:26:19 > 0:26:21But, I want them to be happy where they live.
0:26:21 > 0:26:24And how can you fail to be impressed with that property,
0:26:24 > 0:26:27with all this land on that price...
0:26:27 > 0:26:28It's tremendous.
0:26:30 > 0:26:36Over £50,000 under their £250,000 budget,
0:26:36 > 0:26:38this property is a spacious,
0:26:38 > 0:26:41detached home with open plan receptions in kitchen,
0:26:41 > 0:26:46a sunroom, four bedrooms, two stables, and 13 acres of land.
0:26:48 > 0:26:50- Let's go in and see... - New stable door...
0:26:51 > 0:26:53It's a decent size.
0:26:54 > 0:26:57The superficial or cosmetic decor is absolutely,
0:26:57 > 0:27:01definitely not to our taste. So, we would need to do a lot there.
0:27:01 > 0:27:02I think through doing that,
0:27:02 > 0:27:06you could make the property a lot more welcoming and homely.
0:27:06 > 0:27:09For example, changing the tile floor to a wooden floor...
0:27:09 > 0:27:11the kitchen could be modernised
0:27:11 > 0:27:14and perhaps brought more into the main room there
0:27:14 > 0:27:17for the purpose of socialising and living in day-to-day.
0:27:17 > 0:27:22This house...it has more land, and it's a nice property.
0:27:22 > 0:27:26But, it just doesn't have that wow factor for me.
0:27:26 > 0:27:28Would you keep the sheep, or would you move them out
0:27:28 > 0:27:31- and do something else?- No sheep, all horses. What were you expecting?
0:27:31 > 0:27:33All horses...no chickens, perhaps?
0:27:33 > 0:27:35Oh, we might go for the chickens, yeah.
0:27:35 > 0:27:37In all seriousness, are you surprised
0:27:37 > 0:27:40what your money will buy in this part of France?
0:27:40 > 0:27:42Very much so, yes. The reason for coming here was that we...
0:27:42 > 0:27:45I thought that was the case, but it's quite incredible
0:27:45 > 0:27:47- how much more you do get for your money.- It is amazing.
0:27:47 > 0:27:50We've still got more to show you... so, should we jump into the car?
0:27:50 > 0:27:51Yes, please!
0:27:59 > 0:28:02Whilst Paul and Lindsay's dream of moving to France is
0:28:02 > 0:28:05all about getting more turf under their feet, there's a different
0:28:05 > 0:28:09greenery that's been putting Brittany on the map for centuries.
0:28:09 > 0:28:13The small fishing village of Roscoff on the far northern shore
0:28:13 > 0:28:17provides one of the richest sources of seaweed in the world...
0:28:17 > 0:28:20with over 200 varieties found.
0:28:20 > 0:28:23Harvested on a commercial scale since the 14th century,
0:28:23 > 0:28:27the seaweed has been used for fertilizer, fuel, and food.
0:28:27 > 0:28:31So, to give our buyers a taste of the coastal delights of this area,
0:28:31 > 0:28:32we've arranged for them to meet
0:28:32 > 0:28:37Bernard Curfnell, an expert in this valuable marine harvest.
0:28:37 > 0:28:41Today, Brittany's seaweed industry employs over 1,000 people,
0:28:41 > 0:28:44and modern technology has made harvesting much easier
0:28:44 > 0:28:48than the ancient method, which was backbreaking work.
0:28:50 > 0:28:53Here we are. Just at the low tide.
0:28:54 > 0:29:00You see that here we've got many species of seaweed, and in the past
0:29:00 > 0:29:05we were harvesting seaweed in May or June with a little sickle.
0:29:05 > 0:29:11In winter, we were harvesting with another tool, which is a big rake.
0:29:11 > 0:29:17The men were going in the sea to harvest seaweed like that.
0:29:20 > 0:29:24- You see? And they were bringing that back to the beach.- Very effective.
0:29:27 > 0:29:30And, we can eat seaweed, too.
0:29:30 > 0:29:32You see that here...
0:29:32 > 0:29:37- that is named in Breton language, "bidin zout"...- Bin zout?
0:29:37 > 0:29:40"Bidin zout," that is a red seaweed which is eaten.
0:29:40 > 0:29:45You can eat that with cheese and in omelettes...that can be interesting.
0:29:45 > 0:29:49So, we can have many, many recipes with seaweed.
0:29:49 > 0:29:53Around 80% of Europe's seaweed production takes place in Brittany.
0:29:53 > 0:29:56And, since it's also the crepe capital of the world,
0:29:56 > 0:29:59Chef Helen is going to show our buyers
0:29:59 > 0:30:03how to create a classic Breton dish, but with a briny twist.
0:30:03 > 0:30:06The batter is a closely guarded family recipe,
0:30:06 > 0:30:09and the filling uses three different types of seaweed...
0:30:11 > 0:30:14..which is then unloaded with butter,
0:30:14 > 0:30:17and served with leeks and scallops.
0:30:17 > 0:30:20- Here she goes. - Yep, good luck, Linds.
0:30:21 > 0:30:23And now they've been shown the ropes,
0:30:23 > 0:30:26Lindsay and Paul are going to have a go at making their own
0:30:26 > 0:30:30before they sit down to lunch with Bernard on the quayside.
0:30:30 > 0:30:32I can't wait to try this! It looks delicious.
0:30:32 > 0:30:34It looks absolutely fantastic, Bernard.
0:30:34 > 0:30:36Oh, yes...it really does go together.
0:30:36 > 0:30:37It's great.
0:30:37 > 0:30:41The taste of the sea...it really comes through the flavour.
0:30:41 > 0:30:44- You've got a taste of the seaweed. - Very much so.
0:30:45 > 0:30:49With a local dish to add to their repertoire, we need to get back
0:30:49 > 0:30:52to the property hunt to see what we're dishing up next.
0:30:59 > 0:31:03Our third property is close to the tourist hotspot Huelgoat,
0:31:03 > 0:31:05in Armorique Regional Natural Park.
0:31:07 > 0:31:11Huelgoat is an elegant village the lies on a peaceful lake.
0:31:11 > 0:31:13With a square lined with bars and shops,
0:31:13 > 0:31:16as well as a good range of other facilities.
0:31:17 > 0:31:21The area is known for its wonderful scenery of ancient woodland,
0:31:21 > 0:31:24arboreta, and granite rock curiosities.
0:31:24 > 0:31:28And one particular 100-tonne boulder is reputed to move using
0:31:28 > 0:31:30just the lightest of touch.
0:31:30 > 0:31:33We're stopping in the woods to put it to the test.
0:31:37 > 0:31:40Ready...push!
0:31:41 > 0:31:44- Wow, superpowers!- Superpowers!
0:31:45 > 0:31:49- Oh, my, it is moving. - Yeah, it's going.- That's amazing.
0:31:50 > 0:31:52That's enough rock 'n' roll for now
0:31:52 > 0:31:55as we've got a property to view which is a short drive away.
0:32:00 > 0:32:02So...if I can get you to just turn around here,
0:32:02 > 0:32:04have a little look back...
0:32:05 > 0:32:07- As you can see, we've walked down this little road.- Wow.
0:32:07 > 0:32:13- Which property do you think it might be?- Any one of them!
0:32:15 > 0:32:21Well, all of that side, and most of this side is your next property.
0:32:21 > 0:32:26- Brilliant!- We are not greedy, but... I'm quite pleased about that.- Yeah!
0:32:26 > 0:32:29- So, quite a lot of property. - Quite a lot of property.
0:32:29 > 0:32:32Absolutely. They look old and sturdy.
0:32:32 > 0:32:35They certainly are, some of these buildings have been here
0:32:35 > 0:32:38- since around 1780.- Wow! That's amazing...they look it.
0:32:38 > 0:32:40They've got real character, haven't they?
0:32:40 > 0:32:43This intriguing lot would offer Paul and Lindsay
0:32:43 > 0:32:46huge business possibilities, as well as catering
0:32:46 > 0:32:48for their sporting needs.
0:32:48 > 0:32:50In terms of holiday accommodation,
0:32:50 > 0:32:52there are three well-presented gites.
0:32:52 > 0:32:57One with two bedrooms, then another two, each with one double bedroom,
0:32:57 > 0:33:00and there's a further cottage on offer yet to be renovated.
0:33:00 > 0:33:02But, we're going to start with the owner's quarters.
0:33:04 > 0:33:06- So, do come on in.- Ohh!
0:33:09 > 0:33:13- Oh, that is nice.- Yeah?- Oh, yes, very interesting, isn't it?
0:33:13 > 0:33:16Lindsay, you're very taken with the character and the charm.
0:33:16 > 0:33:19As you walked down the mews, your face lit up,
0:33:19 > 0:33:22- and in here you like it, don't you? - I like it a lot, actually.
0:33:22 > 0:33:24I love the stone fireplace, the flooring...
0:33:24 > 0:33:27very, very practical, which is great.
0:33:27 > 0:33:30And then, the kitchen is lovely and modern. Looks very new.
0:33:30 > 0:33:33I'm spying a range there which is looking pretty good.
0:33:33 > 0:33:35- That's important, isn't it? - Got to have a range.
0:33:35 > 0:33:40- I do like a nice cooker. Spot on. - All the character is fantastic.
0:33:40 > 0:33:44I can imagine myself by the fire with a pint of Breton ale.
0:33:44 > 0:33:47- Hasn't taken you long, has it? - No, it never does.
0:33:47 > 0:33:49- So, so far, so good, then? - Yeah, really brilliant.
0:33:49 > 0:33:52And remember that this is sort of your accommodation.
0:33:52 > 0:33:54We've got to get that in your head
0:33:54 > 0:33:55because there is still so much to see...
0:33:55 > 0:33:57OK, I'm going to take you through here.
0:34:00 > 0:34:05- So, come into your sitting room. - Oh, wow, it's extremely cosy.
0:34:05 > 0:34:08I think you can feel the warmth before you actually see the fire.
0:34:08 > 0:34:10The heat is coming off it.
0:34:10 > 0:34:13And, you know when people talk about when we have the wood burner going
0:34:13 > 0:34:17- it heats the whole house... - Yes.- You can see why, can't you?
0:34:17 > 0:34:20It's drifting up that staircase and through the ceiling.
0:34:20 > 0:34:23The staircase in the sitting room leads up
0:34:23 > 0:34:26to a large, first-floor double bedroom and shower room.
0:34:26 > 0:34:30But, we're ascending another staircase back in the kitchen-diner,
0:34:30 > 0:34:33and heading to the remaining first-floor rooms.
0:34:33 > 0:34:36This is probably quite unusual. It's going to appeal to you.
0:34:36 > 0:34:41- It's going to appeal to me, it's a tack room!- You're not doing that.
0:34:41 > 0:34:45Here is your tack room. Now, some might want to move those outside.
0:34:45 > 0:34:46I think so.
0:34:46 > 0:34:49But, I want to show you this space because I think, Paul,
0:34:49 > 0:34:52- this space could be yours. - Ahh! A study, you mean.
0:34:52 > 0:34:56- Study come dressing room. - Yes, yeah.- That's a good idea.
0:34:56 > 0:34:59That works, doesn't it. It's lovely and light up here, isn't it?
0:34:59 > 0:35:02Let me show you the master.
0:35:02 > 0:35:05So, size-wise...how do you feel about up here?
0:35:05 > 0:35:08Although it's got the sloping ceilings which gives it
0:35:08 > 0:35:11tonnes of character, you've still got head height.
0:35:11 > 0:35:14It's not too horrendous for you at all, is it?
0:35:14 > 0:35:17So, should we go and discuss the gite option in more detail?
0:35:18 > 0:35:22This main farmhouse is attached to one of the one-bedroom cottages.
0:35:22 > 0:35:25And between all three of these rental properties,
0:35:25 > 0:35:28the current owners estimate an annual turnover
0:35:28 > 0:35:29of upwards of 18,000 Euros.
0:35:32 > 0:35:37Now this is where we can start talking business potential.
0:35:37 > 0:35:39Ah-ha! Let's see.
0:35:39 > 0:35:44- So, three gites in total.- Right. - This one has two double bedrooms.
0:35:44 > 0:35:48One down here, one upstairs with the bathroom upstairs.
0:35:48 > 0:35:52But, all of them have been fitted out to this calibre.
0:35:52 > 0:35:54Really nicely done up to the standard people seem to
0:35:54 > 0:35:56expect these days in holiday lets.
0:35:56 > 0:36:00So, we've explored the home and the business.
0:36:00 > 0:36:03That leaves just one last thing on the check list...
0:36:03 > 0:36:05and that's land for Lindsay's horses.
0:36:05 > 0:36:09- This is so exciting!- It's like a walk in the woods at the moment.
0:36:09 > 0:36:10It is, it's lovely.
0:36:11 > 0:36:14The plot extends to just under seven acres which is mostly meadow
0:36:14 > 0:36:19with plenty of shelter from trees, woodland and hedgerows.
0:36:19 > 0:36:21If you can imagine a horseshoe,
0:36:21 > 0:36:24how apt, around this little bit of forest is your land.
0:36:25 > 0:36:30- Ah, lovely.- Just under seven acres.
0:36:30 > 0:36:33A little bit of it is woodland...just under.
0:36:33 > 0:36:34I'm sorry, I'm going to cry!
0:36:42 > 0:36:47I'm going to have to go for a minute and let's shoot again.
0:36:47 > 0:36:52Look, I even got some horses in the field to complete the sale.
0:36:52 > 0:36:54- See, look we've lost her. - I know, what is she like?
0:36:54 > 0:36:56- You've gone as well, haven't you? - She has, quite funny.
0:36:58 > 0:37:02- Can I rescue you back? - I don't know actually.- Come on.
0:37:02 > 0:37:03Come and talk to me.
0:37:03 > 0:37:08Explain to me, because obviously horses are such a big part
0:37:08 > 0:37:12of both of your lives, what this means,
0:37:12 > 0:37:15when you see the final piece of this jigsaw with this property.
0:37:15 > 0:37:17- What does it mean to you? - It's just beautiful.
0:37:17 > 0:37:21It's just such a lovely field surrounded by the trees,
0:37:21 > 0:37:25gorgeous setting, the house is beautiful and, you know...perfect.
0:37:25 > 0:37:27Oh, Linds, you're so emotional.
0:37:27 > 0:37:30Paul, you started to well up, but I didn't give tears from you, did I?
0:37:30 > 0:37:31No, I was reacting to Lindsay.
0:37:31 > 0:37:34The only field I've ever cried at is Villa Park.
0:37:35 > 0:37:40- In sympathy.- Exactly.- So, it really does mean a lot to you.
0:37:40 > 0:37:42And I think that just seeing this huge paddock
0:37:42 > 0:37:44sums it up quite well, doesn't it?
0:37:44 > 0:37:47Oh, it would be absolutely amazing. Yep, absolutely.
0:37:48 > 0:37:51We're going to wander through more of the land
0:37:51 > 0:37:53whilst Lindsay composes herself.
0:37:53 > 0:37:56But, there's even more to excite her in the form
0:37:56 > 0:38:00of a brand-new timber stable block that's less than a year old.
0:38:00 > 0:38:02And now both Lindsay and Paul have had a tour of this
0:38:02 > 0:38:07considerable enterprise, they need to put a price on it all.
0:38:07 > 0:38:09Well, you've seen the stables, you've seen the land,
0:38:09 > 0:38:11you've seen all the properties...
0:38:11 > 0:38:14We got such an amazing reaction from you,
0:38:14 > 0:38:17can we put a price on this property?
0:38:17 > 0:38:21I'm going to have to go the high-end of the budget and say £245,000.
0:38:21 > 0:38:22Right.
0:38:22 > 0:38:23It does need some work doing on it,
0:38:23 > 0:38:26so, despite all those good things that Lindsay likes,
0:38:26 > 0:38:29I'd hope there'd be a bit in the budget,
0:38:29 > 0:38:30maybe a small amount so, £240,000?
0:38:30 > 0:38:34The asking price is just over...
0:38:34 > 0:38:37£210,000.
0:38:37 > 0:38:40- This place is crazy, isn't it?- Like you.
0:38:42 > 0:38:44- I can fix it up for that. - Yeah. Yeah.
0:38:44 > 0:38:47There's still plenty actually to explore with this property,
0:38:47 > 0:38:50because there's so much to it, do you fancy, I'm sure you do,
0:38:50 > 0:38:53- having another look around?- Yes. - I think we need to get our bearings.
0:38:53 > 0:38:57And also from the business potential...there's so much there.
0:38:57 > 0:38:59Have a good look, do your sums,
0:38:59 > 0:39:01what it would cost to do it up to the standard you want it.
0:39:01 > 0:39:05- And I'm hoping it comes out all right.- Yes.
0:39:05 > 0:39:07- I think it might. - Off you go. Thank you.
0:39:09 > 0:39:13I love it when a plan comes together.
0:39:13 > 0:39:17This property, this land, the stable block, the gites...
0:39:17 > 0:39:21it has everything that they want. And guess what...it's under budget!
0:39:27 > 0:39:30Once again a good deal under budget, this proposition offers
0:39:30 > 0:39:32a traditional two-bedroom farmhouse,
0:39:32 > 0:39:36a ready-made business of three rental cottages,
0:39:36 > 0:39:39as well as a potential project to create a fourth gite.
0:39:39 > 0:39:42There's also a brand-new timber stable block,
0:39:42 > 0:39:46and some seven acres of prime grazing land.
0:39:46 > 0:39:49But, Lindsay may not be at the finishing line just yet,
0:39:49 > 0:39:51as she has just one more fence to jump,
0:39:51 > 0:39:55and that's convincing her husband, who has growing concerns
0:39:55 > 0:39:58about income tax, as he will still need to work
0:39:58 > 0:40:00when they make this significant move.
0:40:00 > 0:40:04My thoughts on this property I can hardly put into words
0:40:04 > 0:40:09to be quite honest, and it's just got absolutely everything.
0:40:09 > 0:40:13This hasn't fulfilled the brief, it is the brief.
0:40:13 > 0:40:17Yeah, it's a wonderful house. It's a wonderful many houses, actually!
0:40:18 > 0:40:20So, I think Lindsay already sees herself here,
0:40:20 > 0:40:22and I definitely can as well.
0:40:22 > 0:40:24There's still the tug of the UK
0:40:24 > 0:40:29and everything that's important about moving to a foreign country.
0:40:29 > 0:40:31But, all of those things are surmountable, so...
0:40:31 > 0:40:35I think Lindsay's sold, and with a little persuasion I would be too.
0:40:37 > 0:40:41You know, you two, it is quite remarkable sitting here.
0:40:41 > 0:40:43You have your own row of mews houses.
0:40:43 > 0:40:47It's incredible, it's just incredible, it is.
0:40:47 > 0:40:48Don't you get emotional again.
0:40:48 > 0:40:50Come on, I've got to drag you away now.
0:40:58 > 0:41:00The motive for Lindsay and Paul's escape
0:41:00 > 0:41:03is their passion for horse endurance racing.
0:41:03 > 0:41:07And, seven years ago another British couple had the very same impulse.
0:41:08 > 0:41:10Endurance riders, Lis and Graham,
0:41:10 > 0:41:13live on a 30-acre stud farm in a small village,
0:41:13 > 0:41:1640 minutes from Huelgoat, and have invited us
0:41:16 > 0:41:21along to share their experiences of the Breton equestrian life.
0:41:21 > 0:41:24I'm heading off with the lads leaving Lindsay, Lis,
0:41:24 > 0:41:27and Harry the dog to lunge one of the horses in need of some gentle
0:41:27 > 0:41:29exercise after a recent injury.
0:41:32 > 0:41:36So, how easy was it to move the horses over to France,
0:41:36 > 0:41:37or how difficult?
0:41:37 > 0:41:40Well, it took us a year to register them
0:41:40 > 0:41:45with the National Haras, which you need to do compete nationally.
0:41:45 > 0:41:51We've got about 30 national competitions within an hour of here.
0:41:51 > 0:41:54- Which is fantastic. - Oh, 30! Paul will faint.
0:41:54 > 0:41:56When you compete here,
0:41:56 > 0:41:58you ride through little villages
0:41:58 > 0:42:03and there's all of the villagers sitting outside their houses
0:42:03 > 0:42:09with water for you and they set up stalls for you to have
0:42:09 > 0:42:13oysters and wine at 10 o'clock in the morning, and...
0:42:13 > 0:42:16- I can't imagine that at home! - No, it's fantastic.
0:42:18 > 0:42:22Lis and Graham have both competed for team GB, and now breed and train
0:42:22 > 0:42:26purebred Arabian endurance horses for a living.
0:42:26 > 0:42:29They are committed to caring for 14 horses at their farm,
0:42:29 > 0:42:33but they still find time for other non-horse related enterprises.
0:42:33 > 0:42:36- She is beautiful, isn't she? - Yeah, she is.
0:42:36 > 0:42:39- She could do with a bit of brush. - Yeah, keep me working.
0:42:39 > 0:42:42So, you boys can chat, and I'm going to be doing the work.
0:42:42 > 0:42:43Now, I do see that you have a gite there,
0:42:43 > 0:42:45are you letting it out for holidays?
0:42:45 > 0:42:48Yeah, Lis lets it out, been letting it out for the last two years.
0:42:48 > 0:42:52It's all right. It's not a massive amount of money,
0:42:52 > 0:42:53but it's a backup so...
0:42:53 > 0:42:55Would you advise it?
0:42:55 > 0:42:58Yeah, now we know more about what you can and can't do.
0:42:58 > 0:43:02- Is the tax system complicated out here?- Extremely.
0:43:02 > 0:43:05- The dreaded questions. - This is what we'd heard.
0:43:05 > 0:43:07Overall, is it a higher rate of taxation across...
0:43:07 > 0:43:10- Yes, it's more like 50%.- Is it?
0:43:10 > 0:43:15But, obviously, after all that red tape it's been worth it for you?
0:43:15 > 0:43:17I think so, yeah. I think so.
0:43:17 > 0:43:20With some of the daily chores completed,
0:43:20 > 0:43:23we're getting back together for a well-earned break
0:43:23 > 0:43:25over a bottle of vin rouge.
0:43:25 > 0:43:28You obviously love your life over here...
0:43:28 > 0:43:30is there anything you would do differently...
0:43:30 > 0:43:33you know, like a piece of advice you'd give a couple
0:43:33 > 0:43:34coming out here to live?
0:43:34 > 0:43:36Make sure you've got enough money not to work.
0:43:37 > 0:43:41I like that. Cheers!
0:43:44 > 0:43:46Is there anything else that has, sort of, come as a surprise,
0:43:46 > 0:43:48because you obviously did your homework,
0:43:48 > 0:43:52- and I'm sure you're going to say to us that's key...- Oh, absolutely.
0:43:52 > 0:43:54Research, research, research.
0:43:54 > 0:43:56Do you find it's important to speak fluent French
0:43:56 > 0:43:58to get on with the locals, so to speak?
0:43:58 > 0:44:01Not fluent, but I think it's important to make an effort.
0:44:01 > 0:44:03You do need to speak French, it is so important.
0:44:03 > 0:44:05We still go and have lessons.
0:44:05 > 0:44:08Have you found it easy to make new friends over here?
0:44:08 > 0:44:11You do find people ask you around for dinner, and you go, "I can't.
0:44:11 > 0:44:13"I'm competing this week." And they go, "Oh."
0:44:13 > 0:44:17Another time they'll ask you, and you'll say, "I'm competing",
0:44:17 > 0:44:20and then you don't get asked again.
0:44:20 > 0:44:24So, you end up socialising with people that have the same
0:44:24 > 0:44:27- sort of lifestyle.- But, it must be a great way of making friends.
0:44:27 > 0:44:30- When you've got a passion as you all have.- Oh, absolutely.
0:44:30 > 0:44:32You have an instant bond, don't you?
0:44:32 > 0:44:36Within the sport, certainly, and within horses.
0:44:36 > 0:44:39Most of the French people we've met have been through horses.
0:44:39 > 0:44:42If they've got any more questions,
0:44:42 > 0:44:45- you know they're going to be in touch.- Not a problem.
0:44:46 > 0:44:51- They'll see you at the competition. Thank you.- Thank you.- Cheers.
0:44:55 > 0:44:58Lis and Graham have shared useful information
0:44:58 > 0:44:59about work and recreation.
0:44:59 > 0:45:02And, when it comes to buying property in France,
0:45:02 > 0:45:05there are a few further pointers to bear in mind.
0:45:05 > 0:45:09Sales taxes and legal fees typically range from 7-10%,
0:45:09 > 0:45:12and are paid on top of the property price.
0:45:12 > 0:45:16But, usually all estate agents costs are included.
0:45:16 > 0:45:19And if you too fancy French equestrian life,
0:45:19 > 0:45:20it's well worth checking
0:45:20 > 0:45:22if planning commission would be required to convert any
0:45:22 > 0:45:26outbuildings for change of use, and whether there are rights
0:45:26 > 0:45:30to hunt or shoot over the land you're interested in buying.
0:45:30 > 0:45:34Before signing on the dotted line, be sure to seek sound legal advice.
0:45:40 > 0:45:41It's been a long day for our buyers
0:45:41 > 0:45:44and they've had plenty of information to absorb,
0:45:44 > 0:45:47so I'm leaving them to find somewhere for dinner
0:45:47 > 0:45:48to mull it all over.
0:46:00 > 0:46:01It's the final day of our house hunt,
0:46:01 > 0:46:05and at the rented gite, Lindsay and Paul are starting their day
0:46:05 > 0:46:08the French way, with some warm croissants.
0:46:08 > 0:46:10- Oh, fantastic.- Voila.
0:46:10 > 0:46:13OK, so what do you think Nicki is going to show us today, then?
0:46:13 > 0:46:16- The mystery house... - The mystery house.- What could it be?
0:46:16 > 0:46:18Well, they could take us back to England.
0:46:20 > 0:46:22- Say, what's wrong with Hampshire? - Yeah.
0:46:27 > 0:46:30Well, I'm really enjoying this house hunt here in Brittany.
0:46:30 > 0:46:33And, yesterday's property provoked tears from Lindsay...
0:46:33 > 0:46:37we are talking tears of joy. And Paul was equally impressed.
0:46:37 > 0:46:40So, today it's time for our mystery house.
0:46:40 > 0:46:42But, I think this is going to be rather interesting
0:46:42 > 0:46:46because it has the potential of giving them everything
0:46:46 > 0:46:48that they want, but on a much bigger,
0:46:48 > 0:46:50or should that be "le grand", scale.
0:46:52 > 0:46:56The hunt for our final property takes us to the village of Motreff.
0:46:57 > 0:47:01Surrounded by unspoiled beautiful Breton countryside, Motreff offers
0:47:01 > 0:47:05a local store and restaurant, as well as a couple of bars.
0:47:07 > 0:47:11A ten-minute walk down a private lane brings us to our mystery house.
0:47:11 > 0:47:14It gives Lindsay and Paul more than four times the land
0:47:14 > 0:47:18they asked for, so will really challenge their rural aspirations.
0:47:19 > 0:47:23So it is very nearly mystery house time,
0:47:23 > 0:47:26but I'm going to do something a little bit different.
0:47:26 > 0:47:28I want us to go away from the house,
0:47:28 > 0:47:32- because I want to show you the land first.- Oh, I see.
0:47:32 > 0:47:34How important is land to you, Lindsay?
0:47:34 > 0:47:35Oh, very important, as you know.
0:47:37 > 0:47:40So, how would you feel about owning 45 acres?
0:47:43 > 0:47:46- Well, it's just not enough! - Oh, my goodness, me.
0:47:46 > 0:47:49Now, you're also probably keen to see the property itself.
0:47:49 > 0:47:50Let's go and have a look at it
0:47:50 > 0:47:52and then we can discuss it a bit more.
0:47:53 > 0:47:59Of the incredible 45 acres, 30 are given over to pasture land.
0:47:59 > 0:48:02Accompanying all this land is a property that started life as a
0:48:02 > 0:48:07Breton farmhouse and was completely renovated seven years ago.
0:48:07 > 0:48:09So, I want you to keep your eyes down...
0:48:10 > 0:48:12And we'll stop us here.
0:48:12 > 0:48:17- And you can look up, because this is your mystery house.- Oh, my goodness!
0:48:17 > 0:48:18I think it looks beautiful, I really do.
0:48:18 > 0:48:21I think it looks absolutely beautiful.
0:48:21 > 0:48:22- Right, so...we ready?- Yes!
0:48:24 > 0:48:28To one side of the farmhouse are two huge stone barns
0:48:28 > 0:48:30ripe for a renovation project.
0:48:30 > 0:48:33We're starting in the kitchen-breakfast room
0:48:33 > 0:48:34of the main property.
0:48:34 > 0:48:37Now, with this farmhouse there are no complaints about being
0:48:37 > 0:48:41- cold in the kitchen. - Oh, very toasty, isn't it?
0:48:41 > 0:48:45- That's lovely and toasty. - Because you have a wood range there.
0:48:45 > 0:48:47- Oh, a traditional range.- Fabulous.
0:48:48 > 0:48:52Feel free to take your coats off because it is warm.
0:48:52 > 0:48:54It is a little bit on the warm side, isn't it?
0:48:56 > 0:48:59- So, do you like the kitchen? - I love the kitchen.
0:48:59 > 0:49:01Could you see yourself in this kitchen, both of you?
0:49:01 > 0:49:04It's got a real traditional farmhouse kitchen feel,
0:49:04 > 0:49:06just like you want it to be... authentic.
0:49:06 > 0:49:09I want to take us through down these steps, if you'd like to follow me...
0:49:13 > 0:49:17- Just mind your head. - Yes, I'm all right.
0:49:17 > 0:49:19That's my job, banging my head.
0:49:19 > 0:49:23You're a little bit taller, Paul, you're a little bit taller.
0:49:23 > 0:49:25This is us, isn't it, really?
0:49:25 > 0:49:27- It is our style if you think of our current house.- Yeah, absolutely.
0:49:27 > 0:49:30What a beautiful unit in the corner.
0:49:30 > 0:49:33Just behind us we've got an open staircase there.
0:49:33 > 0:49:37That leads up to a large double bedroom with a bathroom.
0:49:37 > 0:49:40So, if you have guests come to stay,
0:49:40 > 0:49:44- they've got their own wing of the house, if you'd like.- Very nice.
0:49:44 > 0:49:46If you fall out, we can get rid of them.
0:49:46 > 0:49:49We've seen the outbuildings, you might want to put them
0:49:49 > 0:49:51in there after a little bit of work, but if you want them
0:49:51 > 0:49:54to have luxury, they can stay on the side of the property.
0:49:54 > 0:49:56- Very nice.- We'll allow them.
0:49:56 > 0:49:59- So, have you seen enough in this room?- I think I'm itching to get on.
0:49:59 > 0:50:02Of course, great, let's head back through the kitchen.
0:50:03 > 0:50:06On the other side, back in the main part of the house,
0:50:06 > 0:50:10is a smaller, cosier living room, once again with a log burner.
0:50:10 > 0:50:13This part is laid out over three storeys
0:50:13 > 0:50:16with the first floor completely given over to the master suite.
0:50:19 > 0:50:21I love this aspect!
0:50:22 > 0:50:26- And it's not often I get excited about bathrooms.- Oh, my God!
0:50:28 > 0:50:29Barely room to swing a leopard.
0:50:31 > 0:50:33It's vast, you could play tennis in here!
0:50:33 > 0:50:35So, this would be your bathroom.
0:50:35 > 0:50:38I'm going to show you your bedroom in just a moment.
0:50:38 > 0:50:40But then, above us, there's a further two bedrooms.
0:50:40 > 0:50:44- Oh, another storey? I didn't realise that.- So, four in total.
0:50:44 > 0:50:47OK, well, let's show you the most important bedroom
0:50:47 > 0:50:49- which will be yours.- OK.
0:50:54 > 0:50:57- That's quite spectacular, isn't it? - That's very nice, yeah.
0:50:57 > 0:50:59I feel like I'm staying in a hotel,
0:50:59 > 0:51:02- in a luxurious country house. - Absolutely!
0:51:02 > 0:51:05So, I'll let you explore the rest of the house on your own
0:51:05 > 0:51:09a bit later, because I'm itching to take you outside
0:51:09 > 0:51:11because there's still a little bit more to show you.
0:51:11 > 0:51:12Good grief.
0:51:15 > 0:51:19Back outside, there is so much space and potential for stabling,
0:51:19 > 0:51:21so whilst Lindsay checks out the scope,
0:51:21 > 0:51:24Paul and I are going to look at the business options in the large barn.
0:51:26 > 0:51:30- So...so many buildings with this property.- It's huge, isn't it?
0:51:30 > 0:51:33And obviously been here a very long time to judge by
0:51:33 > 0:51:34those roof joists and beams.
0:51:34 > 0:51:36Possibility of converting it into a gite?
0:51:36 > 0:51:39Well, it's what they call a blank canvas, isn't it?
0:51:39 > 0:51:40A shell of a building.
0:51:40 > 0:51:43It's a major property developer task to turn it into gites,
0:51:43 > 0:51:45but it's clearly got all that potential.
0:51:45 > 0:51:48Let's see how much money you've got left over to do it.
0:51:48 > 0:51:50- That's the important one, isn't it? - Yep.
0:51:50 > 0:51:53- All right?- Very good, thank you.
0:51:53 > 0:51:56Now our buyers have had a chance to examine all the buildings
0:51:56 > 0:52:00and a fraction of the land, we need to put a price on it all.
0:52:00 > 0:52:03So, who wants to go first for the last time?
0:52:05 > 0:52:07I prefer you to give me a guide!
0:52:08 > 0:52:13OK, well, it's an immaculate house and there's an awful lot of it.
0:52:13 > 0:52:17And there's a vast amount of land, so I can't see that this house
0:52:17 > 0:52:22is going to be within our budget, so I'm going to say £255,000.
0:52:22 > 0:52:25- OK.- OK, and, I agree with all of that.
0:52:25 > 0:52:27We would need quite a lot of money to fix the place up,
0:52:27 > 0:52:30but nevertheless I still think it's over budget,
0:52:30 > 0:52:31so I'm going to say £275,000.
0:52:31 > 0:52:36Well, you're both right in the fact that it is over your budget...
0:52:36 > 0:52:40the asking price is just over £269,000.
0:52:40 > 0:52:46- Right.- I was close, for a change! - Look, he's happy, not at the price!
0:52:46 > 0:52:50Oh, yeah, sorry...happy to win the game, "oh, no" on the price.
0:52:50 > 0:52:53Now, some of the fees are included in that price.
0:52:53 > 0:52:56Have a real good think, this could work for you.
0:52:56 > 0:52:58- OK. Our mystery house, off you go! - Thank you.
0:53:02 > 0:53:05When I left this couple last night, I mean, I know Lindsay didn't
0:53:05 > 0:53:09sleep at all for that mews-style property we showed them.
0:53:09 > 0:53:11You know, she thought that was in the bag.
0:53:11 > 0:53:16We now introduced the mystery house and it's blown it open again.
0:53:20 > 0:53:24Paul and Lindsay did say they could stretch their budget
0:53:24 > 0:53:27for the perfect property, and the mystery lot does tip over
0:53:27 > 0:53:30their £250,000 target figure.
0:53:30 > 0:53:33A traditional former farmhouse with bags of rustic appeal,
0:53:33 > 0:53:37it comes with a country kitchen breakfast room, two living rooms,
0:53:37 > 0:53:43four bedrooms, outbuildings aplenty, and a whopping 45 acres of land.
0:53:44 > 0:53:47Well, the mystery house is very interesting.
0:53:47 > 0:53:49The actual house itself has been done very recently
0:53:49 > 0:53:52and to very high standard, it's really nice and,
0:53:52 > 0:53:54pretty much entirely to our taste.
0:53:54 > 0:53:59I think, for me, it's possibly a bit much house and a bit much land,
0:53:59 > 0:54:03but it is just an exceptionally beautiful building.
0:54:03 > 0:54:06And the owners have done a fantastic job with it.
0:54:06 > 0:54:09I could see myself living in the farmhouse and having
0:54:09 > 0:54:12outbuildings and land around it on a much smaller scale than this.
0:54:12 > 0:54:13If the whole thing was finished and done,
0:54:13 > 0:54:15well, we wouldn't be able to afford it,
0:54:15 > 0:54:18but it would be an absolutely incredible property for somebody.
0:54:18 > 0:54:21- It's vast, isn't it?- Huge.
0:54:21 > 0:54:26- Are you all right, you two? - Yes, hello!- You look exhausted.
0:54:26 > 0:54:29You thought you'd seen everything yesterday, didn't you,
0:54:29 > 0:54:31and then we show you the mystery house.
0:54:31 > 0:54:33- That's right, the joker in the pack.- Oh, yes.
0:54:33 > 0:54:35Just to throw you, so I think the best thing is,
0:54:35 > 0:54:38you two should spend some time together, have a chat,
0:54:38 > 0:54:40talk through all those options,
0:54:40 > 0:54:42and then the three of us will find out
0:54:42 > 0:54:44- what your next step is going to be. - OK.
0:54:52 > 0:54:55Back at their rented gite, our buyers are packing up to leave.
0:54:55 > 0:54:57They have a lot of thinking to do,
0:54:57 > 0:55:01and potentially some life-changing decisions to make.
0:55:02 > 0:55:06Well, that's it, we've shown Paul and Lindsay our properties
0:55:06 > 0:55:09here in beautiful Brittany, but have they been convinced enough
0:55:09 > 0:55:12to make the move? I can't wait to find out.
0:55:17 > 0:55:22So, Paul and Lindsay, this has been your first time ever in Brittany.
0:55:22 > 0:55:26Tell me, what's it been like living in the centre of a beautiful village
0:55:26 > 0:55:29- in a wonderful gite? - It's been really enjoyable
0:55:29 > 0:55:31and really interesting. It does give you
0:55:31 > 0:55:34a feel for what it would be like to do it for real, so to speak.
0:55:34 > 0:55:36And walking along the little lanes,
0:55:36 > 0:55:39looking at the views... it's just beautiful.
0:55:39 > 0:55:41It has completely lived up to expectations.
0:55:41 > 0:55:44Well, let's get down to the details, shall we?
0:55:44 > 0:55:47Showed you quite a few properties...put me out
0:55:47 > 0:55:51of my misery, I think I know, just confirm it for me, Lindsay.
0:55:51 > 0:55:54I think we are looking forward to having a conversation with
0:55:54 > 0:55:57- the owners of the mews house. - Fantastic!
0:55:57 > 0:56:00I mean, that was quite a reaction that we got off you, wasn't it?
0:56:00 > 0:56:02It really was.
0:56:02 > 0:56:05Tell me, what was it about that property...because I think
0:56:05 > 0:56:08we were all quite taken aback by it when we walked down that
0:56:08 > 0:56:12beautiful little lane to that open pasture land, and my goodness...
0:56:12 > 0:56:13You were overcome, weren't you?
0:56:13 > 0:56:16Yeah, it was so pretty walking through
0:56:16 > 0:56:19the little wooded bit with the trees, and then suddenly
0:56:19 > 0:56:22coming across that field and seeing the horses in there.
0:56:22 > 0:56:24It was just... Yeah, absolutely loved it.
0:56:24 > 0:56:27Your house is ready to go straight on the market,
0:56:27 > 0:56:29so, where do you go next?
0:56:29 > 0:56:31Well, we're certainly going to pursue that property,
0:56:31 > 0:56:33we need to have a discussion with the owners
0:56:33 > 0:56:35We've got a few things to check, but we'll follow up.
0:56:35 > 0:56:37- Definitely?- Definitely.
0:56:37 > 0:56:38- Oh, yes.- OK, then, how quickly
0:56:38 > 0:56:40are you going to be returning to Brittany?
0:56:40 > 0:56:43- Well, it would be lovely to come back quite soon.- Straightaway!
0:56:43 > 0:56:46- Really?- The more you see the more you want to see
0:56:46 > 0:56:47and get right into the details.
0:56:47 > 0:56:51Are you nervous about selling your property in the UK
0:56:51 > 0:56:54and putting all your eggs in one basket over here?
0:56:54 > 0:56:56The tax system does seem very complicated
0:56:56 > 0:57:01and we do have to be sure that we can afford to live here
0:57:01 > 0:57:05because it looks like, if you move, then it is a one-way ticket.
0:57:05 > 0:57:08We may explore the possibility of trying to have our cake and eat it
0:57:08 > 0:57:13by finding some way of hanging onto that property and move here.
0:57:13 > 0:57:15Listen, you two, it's been an absolute pleasure,
0:57:15 > 0:57:17and we wish you all the very best.
0:57:17 > 0:57:20Thank you, Nicki, we've really enjoyed it, and thank you
0:57:20 > 0:57:22- ever so much for all your help. - Yes, it's been fantastic.
0:57:22 > 0:57:25Couldn't have picked a better couple to drive around Brittany with.
0:57:25 > 0:57:28And we couldn't have picked a better host.
0:57:35 > 0:57:38Whilst Lindsay has been chomping at the bit at the thought of moving
0:57:38 > 0:57:41to France, I sense that Paul has had his reservations.
0:57:41 > 0:57:44But, after showing them the delights of Brittany,
0:57:44 > 0:57:46it seems he's on board, too.
0:57:46 > 0:57:50Now, we've showed them a house that they both fell in love with,
0:57:50 > 0:57:53and if they can sort out their finances
0:57:53 > 0:57:55they could be living the Breton way of life here
0:57:55 > 0:57:57with their horses very soon.
0:57:57 > 0:58:01I certainly hope so. Until next time, bye-bye.
