0:00:02 > 0:00:04Now, 127 years ago, that little hillside village behind me

0:00:04 > 0:00:08was devastated in a terrifying natural disaster.

0:00:08 > 0:00:10It's now one of many "ghost towns" that this country,

0:00:10 > 0:00:13and in particular, this region, is famous for.

0:00:13 > 0:00:15But where are we?

0:00:15 > 0:00:17Well, join me in just a moment and I'll tell you.

0:00:36 > 0:00:39Today's house-hunters are looking to buy a property

0:00:39 > 0:00:42that will be the start of an exciting new adventure.

0:00:42 > 0:00:46THAT is the most amazing bathroom I have ever seen!

0:00:46 > 0:00:50- We get stuck into the lingo... - It's very "typique". "Typico"?

0:00:50 > 0:00:52THEY LAUGH

0:00:52 > 0:00:54- Love the floor.- Is "typico" an Italian word?

0:00:54 > 0:00:56- Yeah, I don't know.- It is now!

0:00:56 > 0:00:58And we discover some welcome surprises.

0:00:58 > 0:01:02- Kelly, what's that?- It's a lemon tree.- It certainly is!

0:01:06 > 0:01:11Well, today we are in Liguria, in the north-western corner of Italy.

0:01:11 > 0:01:15And this is the ruined village of Bussana Vecchia.

0:01:15 > 0:01:19A devastating earthquake, back in 1887, left it in ruins.

0:01:19 > 0:01:23And for decades afterwards, this place was left unloved and unlived in.

0:01:23 > 0:01:28But in the 1960s, a community of artists moved in, taking inspiration

0:01:28 > 0:01:32from the ruins and using them as studios and galleries.

0:01:32 > 0:01:37For a town that everybody thought had died, it's now full of life.

0:01:38 > 0:01:40The Italian region of Liguria is around a

0:01:40 > 0:01:42two-hour flight from the UK.

0:01:42 > 0:01:45It's a crescent-shaped region which hugs

0:01:45 > 0:01:49the coastline for around 180 miles, and, as it borders France,

0:01:49 > 0:01:52can be accessed by either Nice or Genoa airports.

0:01:53 > 0:01:57Known as the Italian Riviera, it's split into two coasts.

0:01:57 > 0:02:01The western section is the Riviera Ponente, a sheltered coastal strip

0:02:01 > 0:02:06punctuated by classic Mediterranean resorts such as San Remo.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09It's Italy's answer to Monte Carlo, with a glitzy casino

0:02:09 > 0:02:12and majestic turn-of-the-century hotels.

0:02:12 > 0:02:15Further to the east is the Riviera Levante,

0:02:15 > 0:02:19which has a more rugged coastline descending directly into the sea

0:02:19 > 0:02:22and home to breathtaking towns such as Portofino,

0:02:22 > 0:02:25which clings to the hillside.

0:02:25 > 0:02:27And in the middle of these two shorelines

0:02:27 > 0:02:29is the capital of the region, Genoa.

0:02:29 > 0:02:33Home to just under a million people, it's a busy commercial city

0:02:33 > 0:02:35built around its deep natural harbour,

0:02:35 > 0:02:38which is Italy's largest seaport.

0:02:38 > 0:02:42One of the more recent additions to the marina is "La Bolla",

0:02:42 > 0:02:45or "The Ball", by Genoese architect Renzo Piano,

0:02:45 > 0:02:48who's better known to us for his London building, the Shard.

0:02:48 > 0:02:50But arguably, Genoa's most famous son

0:02:50 > 0:02:53is explorer Christopher Columbus,

0:02:53 > 0:02:57born here in 1451, and who is remembered throughout the city.

0:02:57 > 0:03:01Inland, medieval mountain villages dot the landscape.

0:03:01 > 0:03:03Mind you, getting to them can be slow going,

0:03:03 > 0:03:05but the views are spectacular.

0:03:11 > 0:03:14So how does all that seductive scenery

0:03:14 > 0:03:16translate into Liguria's property market?

0:03:16 > 0:03:20Well, here on the coast, two-bedroom houses can range from

0:03:20 > 0:03:22£390,000-£800,000.

0:03:22 > 0:03:24Prices that are somewhat inflated thanks to wealthy

0:03:24 > 0:03:28Italian city dwellers investing in second homes here.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31So, if you want more for your budget, well, the trick is simple,

0:03:31 > 0:03:34head inland and further up into the mountains.

0:03:34 > 0:03:37There, you could find the same thing for half as much.

0:03:37 > 0:03:40And it's also worth remembering that Italy is still in the grip

0:03:40 > 0:03:43of an economic downturn. Mortgages are hard to find.

0:03:43 > 0:03:46So if you are a cash buyer coming from the UK, well, to be honest,

0:03:46 > 0:03:48the horizon is wide open.

0:03:48 > 0:03:52So, time now to meet today's buyers and find out what's for them.

0:03:52 > 0:03:55Will it be coast, or countryside?

0:03:55 > 0:04:00Today's house-buyers are Michael and Kelly, who live in Cornwall.

0:04:00 > 0:04:02I'm a helicopter pilot, I've always flown,

0:04:02 > 0:04:06been flying for over 40 years and never done anything else.

0:04:06 > 0:04:10I'm a wedding ceremony registrar.

0:04:10 > 0:04:16So I marry people, which is just the most wonderful job.

0:04:16 > 0:04:19And their journey together began when they were teenagers.

0:04:19 > 0:04:22I was still at school, I think Michael had just left school

0:04:22 > 0:04:24and had joined the Navy.

0:04:24 > 0:04:30And his best friend lived opposite my best friend.

0:04:30 > 0:04:33And that's how we met.

0:04:33 > 0:04:35They've lived in the same house since the '80s,

0:04:35 > 0:04:38where they have concentrated on raising a large family.

0:04:38 > 0:04:43We have five children, four girls and one boy.

0:04:43 > 0:04:46Three of the children are actually my late sister's children,

0:04:46 > 0:04:49so it was a difficult time.

0:04:49 > 0:04:52But we're a really great team together.

0:04:52 > 0:04:56We've had a wild time bringing up a big family.

0:04:56 > 0:05:01And now, that stage is moving on, and we're looking for something new.

0:05:01 > 0:05:04And that new thing is starting a new life in Italy,

0:05:04 > 0:05:07where Kelly lived from the age of seven to 13.

0:05:07 > 0:05:10Her family were in Milan for five years, but spent their holidays

0:05:10 > 0:05:14in Liguria, which is where she wants to return to.

0:05:14 > 0:05:20I lived in Italy as a child and I've always hankered to go back

0:05:20 > 0:05:24and whenever we go back and visit, I just love it.

0:05:24 > 0:05:27As a very sociable couple, they're keen to integrate

0:05:27 > 0:05:30into whichever Italian community they move to.

0:05:30 > 0:05:35We do actually want to go somewhere and be part of it.

0:05:35 > 0:05:38Very definitely. I wouldn't want to be living too remotely.

0:05:38 > 0:05:43If you're not a Vespa ride away from a loaf of bread, it's too far for me.

0:05:43 > 0:05:45Whilst Kelly will give up her job,

0:05:45 > 0:05:50Michael will continue to work in the UK, two weeks on and two weeks off.

0:05:50 > 0:05:53- I can commute from that part of Italy...- So...

0:05:53 > 0:05:55..and for a certain amount of time it'd work.

0:05:55 > 0:05:59And that's another attraction. Its links are very good.

0:05:59 > 0:06:02Kelly will be spending a lot of time on her own, but luckily,

0:06:02 > 0:06:04she can speak some Italian.

0:06:04 > 0:06:08Although my Italian is not brilliant, but then sometimes,

0:06:08 > 0:06:11after I've been there a while, I find myself...

0:06:11 > 0:06:14I just open my mouth and words come out and I think...

0:06:14 > 0:06:16I just kind of roll along with it.

0:06:17 > 0:06:21And they want to be living the "bella vita" as soon as they can.

0:06:21 > 0:06:25It's quite nice to take a leap of faith.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28Because we haven't done that for a while.

0:06:28 > 0:06:32- So, let's go off and have an adventure.- Certainly.

0:06:36 > 0:06:40We're concentrating our search in the area of Liguria west of Genoa,

0:06:40 > 0:06:43towards the French border, where Kelly came as a child.

0:06:43 > 0:06:45Whilst it holds very happy memories,

0:06:45 > 0:06:48she hasn't actually been back in 40 years.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51Now, I know there are beautiful Italian villages

0:06:51 > 0:06:52they both will love,

0:06:52 > 0:06:54but what about their property requirements?

0:06:54 > 0:06:57I need a few more details.

0:06:57 > 0:06:59Hello, Kelly. Hi, Michael.

0:06:59 > 0:07:02- Very nice to see you guys. Welcome...- Thank you.- Thank you.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05- ..to the Italian Riviera.- Wonderful.

0:07:05 > 0:07:08Now, this is an area that you do actually know quite well, don't you?

0:07:08 > 0:07:10I do. I lived here for a while as a child.

0:07:10 > 0:07:13So I have some very happy memories of this area.

0:07:13 > 0:07:16- And Michael, this is a kind of new endeavour for you?- Totally.

0:07:16 > 0:07:20I mean, I've never been to this area at all, so it's either going to

0:07:20 > 0:07:22be a huge shock or surprise, but having said that,

0:07:22 > 0:07:24you know, we've travelled a lot in Italy

0:07:24 > 0:07:27and I've a fair idea what we're likely to expect.

0:07:27 > 0:07:30- And so far, beautiful. - What are your expectations?

0:07:30 > 0:07:34- Because this isn't retirement, is it?- No. I want to keep working.

0:07:34 > 0:07:37And this is an area I could commute a bit, for a while,

0:07:37 > 0:07:40- until we make the complete move. - Have you got a helicopter?- No.

0:07:40 > 0:07:43- LAUGHING:- No, there you go. That would help the commute, wouldn't it?

0:07:43 > 0:07:46Can you give me an idea of what the spec is?

0:07:46 > 0:07:49What are you looking for in this new home? Kelly?

0:07:49 > 0:07:55I think we need a minimum of two bedrooms, some outside space...

0:07:55 > 0:07:59- I would so love to have a lemon tree!- Really?- Yeah.

0:07:59 > 0:08:03- LAUGHING:- I think that's possible. - I wouldn't be adverse to an apartment.

0:08:03 > 0:08:06Now, you mentioned bedrooms. What about downstairs space?

0:08:06 > 0:08:09What's your ideal kind of reception area going to look like?

0:08:09 > 0:08:11Something quite open-plan.

0:08:11 > 0:08:15I don't want to end up spending my life in a kitchen

0:08:15 > 0:08:18when everybody else is at the other end of the house

0:08:18 > 0:08:22or outside on the terrace, or something, and I'm inside cooking.

0:08:22 > 0:08:25How much are we going to spend on all this then, Michael?

0:08:25 > 0:08:27£260,000.

0:08:27 > 0:08:30Well, we've got some glorious weather, and, of course,

0:08:30 > 0:08:33- this wonderful coastline to explore. - Fabulous.

0:08:33 > 0:08:37And 260,000 quid of your hard-earned pennies to spend.

0:08:37 > 0:08:39- Shall we go?- Yes, please. - Can't wait.

0:08:42 > 0:08:47With £260,000 to spend, Kelly and Michael are open to any style

0:08:47 > 0:08:50and type of property, but it should have a minimum of two bedrooms

0:08:50 > 0:08:55as well as connected or open-plan kitchen and living spaces.

0:08:55 > 0:08:58To make the most of the climate, they do want outside space and to

0:08:58 > 0:09:02be located in the heart of a lively and authentic Italian village.

0:09:02 > 0:09:05And, if possible, to have a lemon tree.

0:09:05 > 0:09:08And we have an exciting range of properties to show them.

0:09:08 > 0:09:11Some with unique features that, in all my years of house-hunting,

0:09:11 > 0:09:13I have never seen before.

0:09:13 > 0:09:16And, of course, we have the Mystery House, which could give a

0:09:16 > 0:09:19whole new perspective on their wish list for a home.

0:09:19 > 0:09:22During our time here, Kelly and Michael will be staying

0:09:22 > 0:09:25in their own, rented Italian home, which will give them

0:09:25 > 0:09:28a glimpse of what life could be like once they make the move.

0:09:35 > 0:09:38To kick off our Italian adventure, we're going to the

0:09:38 > 0:09:42village of Vallebona, which is just two-and-a-half-miles from the coast.

0:09:42 > 0:09:45It's a beautiful hillside village, centring on

0:09:45 > 0:09:48a classic Italian church with its campanile tower.

0:09:48 > 0:09:51- Have you been here before? - No, I haven't.

0:09:51 > 0:09:53The village itself offers you everything, as you can see.

0:09:53 > 0:09:56We've got restaurants, you've got a bakery, there's a post office.

0:09:56 > 0:09:59And a nice community of about 1,300 people or so.

0:09:59 > 0:10:02This is absolutely what I had in mind.

0:10:02 > 0:10:04It's perfect.

0:10:04 > 0:10:06- You can hear life going on around us, I mean...- Yes.

0:10:06 > 0:10:09- ..it's clearly a very sociable place, which is nice.- Exactly right.

0:10:09 > 0:10:12And it's also... I mean, it's exceptionally pretty, as well.

0:10:12 > 0:10:13This is just wonderful. Love it.

0:10:13 > 0:10:16Right. Come on then, let's have a look.

0:10:17 > 0:10:21Dating back to the 14th century, the winding medieval streets were

0:10:21 > 0:10:23designed to keep residents cool in the heat of the summer.

0:10:23 > 0:10:27But they also give an incredible sense of atmosphere.

0:10:27 > 0:10:30Right, then. Here we go.

0:10:30 > 0:10:34- That is what I want you to have a look at.- Wow!

0:10:34 > 0:10:35- All of it?- All of it.

0:10:35 > 0:10:39It's raised over four floors, you've got one, two, three, and then

0:10:39 > 0:10:42the fourth is the roof terrace, which of course, you can't see.

0:10:42 > 0:10:47- Fantastic.- It's sort of tucked away, but it's not isolated. This is good.

0:10:47 > 0:10:48It's wonderful. Love it.

0:10:48 > 0:10:50Let's get you inside and see what you make of it.

0:10:50 > 0:10:53- Great.- It's another little climb.

0:10:53 > 0:10:57This town house is all about vertical living.

0:10:57 > 0:10:59On street level, there is a cellar.

0:10:59 > 0:11:02Next floor up is a great guest floor with a living-bedroom,

0:11:02 > 0:11:05as well as small bathroom and a little kitchenette

0:11:05 > 0:11:07with its own balcony.

0:11:07 > 0:11:09But it's up on the second floor where Kelly and Michael's

0:11:09 > 0:11:11accommodation really starts.

0:11:11 > 0:11:16Now, this is what is currently set up as the master.

0:11:16 > 0:11:19- Surprising, isn't it?- It is! It's very surprising.

0:11:19 > 0:11:23- It's not what you'd expect from the outside.- No.- I think that's great.

0:11:23 > 0:11:26- It's very "typique". "Typico"? - Love the floor.

0:11:26 > 0:11:28Is "typico" an Italian word?

0:11:28 > 0:11:30- Yeah, I don't know. LAUGHING:- It is now!- It is now.

0:11:30 > 0:11:33- The floor is terrific, isn't it? - Yeah. Proper.- Wonderful, I love that.

0:11:33 > 0:11:35I thought, looking from outside, that the rooms

0:11:35 > 0:11:39would be much smaller and much darker. But this is lovely.

0:11:39 > 0:11:43I mean, the thing to bear in mind is that the footprint of it is not huge.

0:11:43 > 0:11:45- No.- No.- But it is all stacked up. - Yeah.

0:11:45 > 0:11:47So the further up we get,

0:11:47 > 0:11:49I think the more living accommodation you'll find.

0:11:49 > 0:11:51- Yes.- Right.- Have a look at this.

0:11:53 > 0:11:55Across the landing is a bathroom,

0:11:55 > 0:11:58making this floor a sort of master suite.

0:11:58 > 0:12:00The next level up is the third floor,

0:12:00 > 0:12:03and contains the main reception room.

0:12:04 > 0:12:07Now, they've got this set up as their living room.

0:12:07 > 0:12:12But I suppose, actually, you could reapportion any of these rooms.

0:12:12 > 0:12:14- No, this makes sense, I think.- Yeah. - It makes sense for me.

0:12:14 > 0:12:18- This way up.- Those lovely windows. - It's really nice, isn't it?

0:12:18 > 0:12:21Absolutely love these floors.

0:12:21 > 0:12:24- Big enough?- I think so.- Yes! - I think so.

0:12:24 > 0:12:25I think these rooms...

0:12:25 > 0:12:27You can do so much with them.

0:12:27 > 0:12:31They are all really substantial.

0:12:31 > 0:12:33Now, it's unusual at this stage in a house tour

0:12:33 > 0:12:35not to have seen the kitchen, so let's do that.

0:12:36 > 0:12:40It is through here, right next to that dining room and living room.

0:12:40 > 0:12:43- There you go.- Nice. - Great. I like it.

0:12:43 > 0:12:46The back of the property has this unusual shape, it's not as square

0:12:46 > 0:12:48and as vast as the front.

0:12:48 > 0:12:52Hence, that's why all the bathrooms are at this end on their respective floors.

0:12:52 > 0:12:55And they've slotted in the kitchen as well.

0:12:55 > 0:13:00But there's plenty of worktop space, really great sink.

0:13:00 > 0:13:02And, to be honest,

0:13:02 > 0:13:05I don't expect to spend my time in Italy in the kitchen.

0:13:05 > 0:13:07No, I'd a feeling you might say that. PRESENTER LAUGHS

0:13:07 > 0:13:09I would hope, given the weather,

0:13:09 > 0:13:12- that most of your eating and entertaining...- Quite.

0:13:12 > 0:13:14- ..is going to be up on the roof. - Yeah, yeah.

0:13:14 > 0:13:16Come and have a look.

0:13:16 > 0:13:19On the top floor is a summer kitchen, where food and drinks

0:13:19 > 0:13:22can be prepared for dining alfresco.

0:13:22 > 0:13:24Finally, Kelly, I know the bit you've been really looking

0:13:24 > 0:13:27forward to, the outside space. This is the roof terrace,

0:13:27 > 0:13:30have a look at the view over here.

0:13:30 > 0:13:34- Oh...- There you go.- Yes!- Yes?- Wow. I see the sea.

0:13:34 > 0:13:37You can see the sea! And that lovely bell tower

0:13:37 > 0:13:40- and this lovely higgledy-piggledy roof...line.- Skyline.

0:13:40 > 0:13:42Beautiful, love that. Very nice.

0:13:42 > 0:13:46Now, I'm wondering if this would be a place for your lemon tree?

0:13:46 > 0:13:49Yes, I think I could probably get a lemon tree up here.

0:13:49 > 0:13:53- The only thing is, you've got to carry it up.- Yeah, that might be a problem!

0:13:53 > 0:13:55Well, let's think about the price then.

0:13:55 > 0:13:58You've got £260,000 to spend,

0:13:58 > 0:14:01where does our lovely town house in Vallebona come?

0:14:01 > 0:14:06I think that's most of the budget. Got to be £240,000-plus.

0:14:06 > 0:14:09I think it would be more like 250.

0:14:09 > 0:14:12This one is quite good news.

0:14:12 > 0:14:17This is all the twos! It's £222,222.

0:14:19 > 0:14:22- Wow.- That's a surprise. A walk-in house.- Yeah.- Yeah!

0:14:22 > 0:14:24- For that money as well.- Absolutely. - That's extraordinary.

0:14:24 > 0:14:27You can just walk in here and get on with it.

0:14:27 > 0:14:30- And have fun...- Doing things. - ..cosmetically tweaking it,

0:14:30 > 0:14:34- without having to worry about anything major.- Yes.- Wow.

0:14:34 > 0:14:37Very nice. And in such a lovely spot. Really lovely.

0:14:37 > 0:14:40Right, then. Off you go, go and spend a bit of time.

0:14:40 > 0:14:42In particular, have a look at that ground floor,

0:14:42 > 0:14:45- think about how the guests might enjoy that.- Yes.

0:14:45 > 0:14:46- Enjoy.- Thank you.

0:14:46 > 0:14:49And I think I might just enjoy the view a bit more.

0:14:49 > 0:14:51Look at that.

0:14:52 > 0:14:56Priced at £38,000 under their top budget,

0:14:56 > 0:15:00this four-storey town house offers character on every level.

0:15:00 > 0:15:02There are the two bedrooms they asked for,

0:15:02 > 0:15:06a spacious reception room and a small kitchen.

0:15:06 > 0:15:09Up on the top floor is an intimate roof terrace with summer kitchen

0:15:09 > 0:15:12and spectacular views over the village towards the coast.

0:15:17 > 0:15:20I really like this room. I think the shape's fantastic.

0:15:20 > 0:15:22- The vaults?- Yes. - Lovely.- Wonderful.

0:15:22 > 0:15:26This is a second bedroom. You could put bunks there.

0:15:26 > 0:15:29We could get eight people in here.

0:15:31 > 0:15:33I love the village, I think it's great.

0:15:33 > 0:15:37It's exactly what I had in mind. A proper village, a proper community.

0:15:37 > 0:15:38Plenty going on.

0:15:38 > 0:15:41The property is great.

0:15:41 > 0:15:43It's very substantial.

0:15:43 > 0:15:44It's a hell of a good house.

0:15:44 > 0:15:48It's beautiful, I really like it.

0:15:48 > 0:15:50I think, though...

0:15:50 > 0:15:54all those stairs might actually get to me.

0:15:54 > 0:15:58And also, the main thing is that the kitchen

0:15:58 > 0:16:02is too separate from the rest of the house.

0:16:02 > 0:16:06I would still like something that is more open plan.

0:16:06 > 0:16:11I mean, we're picking on things to find things but it's a great house.

0:16:11 > 0:16:15There are towns and there are houses in towns but I think this one,

0:16:15 > 0:16:18- it really is special, isn't it? - It's fabulous.

0:16:18 > 0:16:20I've been having a little wander around these lanes

0:16:20 > 0:16:24while you've been finishing off looking around, it's just delightful.

0:16:24 > 0:16:27- Is it on your list?- It's a heck of a start.- It's a good start, isn't it?

0:16:27 > 0:16:31- It's caused confusion. - And a great price, let's be honest.

0:16:31 > 0:16:33And a lovely, lovely village.

0:16:33 > 0:16:36Well, I'm pleased with their first day's house-hunting.

0:16:36 > 0:16:38To round things off we're heading to the town of Imperia

0:16:38 > 0:16:42where there's another property to visit. But this one's not for sale.

0:16:42 > 0:16:45We have got you this little place for the next few days

0:16:45 > 0:16:49in which you can relax and really immerse yourself in the local area.

0:16:49 > 0:16:52- What do you think?- Fantastic. - Not a bad setting, is it?- Wonderful.

0:16:52 > 0:16:54Hopefully, it'll rekindle those childhood memories

0:16:54 > 0:16:58- of a life in Italy on the Riviera. - Absolutely. Wonderful.

0:16:58 > 0:17:01It's yours to enjoy for the next few days,

0:17:01 > 0:17:04somewhere to and unwind and start thinking about what this move

0:17:04 > 0:17:07- is really going to entail for the pair of you.- Thank you very much.

0:17:07 > 0:17:08Lots to ponder.

0:17:10 > 0:17:13- Oh, Calla. Like the lilies. - Oh, right.

0:17:16 > 0:17:19Oh! Nice. This is lovely.

0:17:20 > 0:17:23Look at all those windows. Wonderful.

0:17:23 > 0:17:24That's a view.

0:17:24 > 0:17:28- Look. Look, look, look. Look at that. The mountains.- Fantastic.

0:17:28 > 0:17:31- Wonderful.- Let's explore.

0:17:33 > 0:17:35Having their own temporary home for the duration of the stay

0:17:35 > 0:17:39will give Kelly and Michael the time and space to reflect on what they see.

0:17:41 > 0:17:44- It's nice to actually be here. - It's been quite a day.

0:17:44 > 0:17:47- That was quite a day. - A lot to take in.- Yes.

0:17:47 > 0:17:49And I did love that village.

0:17:49 > 0:17:53You could compromise a lot for that village because the location was so good.

0:17:53 > 0:17:55Still not sure about the stairs but...

0:17:55 > 0:17:59It was, but that village was perfect.

0:18:05 > 0:18:08And tonight our buyers are off to dinner at a place that holds

0:18:08 > 0:18:10lots of happy memories for Kelly.

0:18:10 > 0:18:13A pizzeria in Imperia.

0:18:13 > 0:18:16- Gosh, this is so weird.- I feel like I've been here before.- Yeah.

0:18:18 > 0:18:20After all your descriptions. How's that?

0:18:20 > 0:18:23She and her family regularly dined here

0:18:23 > 0:18:26and its the first time Kelly has been back in 40 years.

0:18:26 > 0:18:28Siamo avere...

0:18:28 > 0:18:34- ..un pizza margherita con rucola. - Rucola.- Va bene.

0:18:34 > 0:18:36Grazie, grazie.

0:18:38 > 0:18:40Dining on the most famous of Italian dishes

0:18:40 > 0:18:42is still a good value night out.

0:18:42 > 0:18:44Outside of the tourist hot spots,

0:18:44 > 0:18:47a pizza will cost roughly four to seven pounds

0:18:47 > 0:18:50and a bottle of house red is around eight pounds.

0:18:50 > 0:18:53Right, let's go for it.

0:18:53 > 0:18:55I've waited so long.

0:18:58 > 0:18:59Mmm.

0:19:02 > 0:19:03OK.

0:19:05 > 0:19:08That's what pizza is supposed to taste like.

0:19:11 > 0:19:14Being back in their old haunt is an emotional experience for Kelly

0:19:14 > 0:19:17as it reminds her of being here with her parents and sister,

0:19:17 > 0:19:20who have sadly all since passed away.

0:19:20 > 0:19:24I know how this place is incredibly important to you.

0:19:24 > 0:19:27It's not because of the place, it's because of the people

0:19:27 > 0:19:29and because of your family.

0:19:29 > 0:19:32Stop it. I'm not going to look at you now.

0:19:32 > 0:19:37No, I understand. It's really special and it's got nothing to do

0:19:37 > 0:19:41with this pizzeria, it's about why you came and who you came with.

0:19:41 > 0:19:42But it's very... But, yes.

0:19:45 > 0:19:51I've been asking myself for years why I've never been back to

0:19:51 > 0:19:54this particular place and why it's never happened.

0:19:54 > 0:19:57I think, actually, I was always, kind of, too...

0:19:59 > 0:20:02It was such a big deal to do it.

0:20:02 > 0:20:06It's just so lovely. Absolutely lovely.

0:20:06 > 0:20:09- Buonasera.- Arriverderci.

0:20:09 > 0:20:12Connecting with past memories while starting a fresh chapter

0:20:12 > 0:20:14is what being here is all about.

0:20:14 > 0:20:18Hopefully, tomorrow we will have some properties which will get

0:20:18 > 0:20:22Kelly and Michael closer to turning those recollections into a reality.

0:20:31 > 0:20:34We're waking up on the second day of our search for a new home

0:20:34 > 0:20:39in the Italian region of Liguria for Kelly and Michael from Cornwall.

0:20:39 > 0:20:42After spending her childhood in the region, it's been Kelly's dream

0:20:42 > 0:20:45to live here and this trip is a chance for Michael to discover

0:20:45 > 0:20:47if it's a move that's right for him too.

0:20:51 > 0:20:54So far, it's clear they love the idea of living in a classic

0:20:54 > 0:20:58Italian community but they do want a little more space,

0:20:58 > 0:21:01in particular for Kelly, something a lot more open plan.

0:21:01 > 0:21:04That's exactly what our second property is going to offer them.

0:21:04 > 0:21:06I can't wait to show them this one.

0:21:12 > 0:21:15For our next property we're heading inland to Pieve di Teco

0:21:15 > 0:21:18which is 14 miles from the coast.

0:21:18 > 0:21:21Surrounded by mountains, the medieval village has narrow streets

0:21:21 > 0:21:25and commercial arcades dating back to the 1400s.

0:21:26 > 0:21:29The 13th century church of Madonna della Ripa

0:21:29 > 0:21:31is now a museum of sacred art

0:21:31 > 0:21:36and the tiny Teatro Salvini is one of the smallest theatres in the world.

0:21:36 > 0:21:39It has a population of around 1,000 and our next property

0:21:39 > 0:21:42is located right in the historic centre.

0:21:45 > 0:21:48Rights, guys, just settle down here and look up there.

0:21:49 > 0:21:52- Wow.- I thought yesterday was really interesting.

0:21:52 > 0:21:55You responded really nicely to the idea of being within

0:21:55 > 0:21:58that old medieval town but it didn't offer you that open plan living

0:21:58 > 0:21:59I know you're very keen on.

0:21:59 > 0:22:02So this one, I think, might do the trick.

0:22:02 > 0:22:06Size is what this one is all about.

0:22:06 > 0:22:10- I think town's lovely.- The town, from what we've seen, is fantastic. - Really nice.

0:22:10 > 0:22:12- Come on, let's have look.- Great.

0:22:12 > 0:22:15'The property is above an antique shop

0:22:15 > 0:22:17'but it's only open one Sunday a month.

0:22:17 > 0:22:20'Inside the house itself, the first floor is the guest floor

0:22:20 > 0:22:23'with two good-sized bedrooms for visitors.

0:22:23 > 0:22:26'Up on another level, there is a third guest bedroom

0:22:26 > 0:22:29'and then a rather unique bedroom for Michael and Kelly

0:22:29 > 0:22:32'as it has a spectacular original fresco.'

0:22:34 > 0:22:36SHE LAUGHS

0:22:36 > 0:22:38Oh, wow. That's extraordinary.

0:22:40 > 0:22:42No surprise, this is the master bedroom.

0:22:44 > 0:22:47Arguably the most ornate of the four.

0:22:47 > 0:22:51The building itself, we think, began life around about 1200.

0:22:51 > 0:22:55It's thought these date from the 18th century.

0:22:55 > 0:22:57- Fabulous.- That's wonderful.

0:22:57 > 0:23:00It's wonderful the way they pick out the lines of the vaulting.

0:23:00 > 0:23:04- Yes.- It's not oppressive, it's not like a museum.

0:23:04 > 0:23:05- That's just stunning.- Yes.

0:23:07 > 0:23:10Frankly, I'm lost for words.

0:23:10 > 0:23:13If you like this, come upstairs.

0:23:13 > 0:23:15- Right.- This is great fun.

0:23:15 > 0:23:18'There is a small shower room across the hallway but the main bathroom

0:23:18 > 0:23:22'is up on the next floor and believe you me, it's different.'

0:23:22 > 0:23:23Come on in.

0:23:26 > 0:23:31- OK.- That is the most amazing bathroom I have ever seen.

0:23:31 > 0:23:34Yes. It's very, very different.

0:23:34 > 0:23:36You've got his and hers sinks over there,

0:23:36 > 0:23:38obviously the bath dominates the whole thing.

0:23:38 > 0:23:42These skylights go up to the roof terrace above, actually.

0:23:43 > 0:23:46You want to be slightly careful as to who's up there

0:23:46 > 0:23:48while you're in the bath! It's just part of the fun of it.

0:23:48 > 0:23:50That's incredible.

0:23:50 > 0:23:52This you will enjoy, Michael.

0:23:52 > 0:23:55I think every home should have one of those.

0:23:56 > 0:23:58A genuine pissoir.

0:23:58 > 0:24:02- It is indeed.- That's fun. It is great fun.

0:24:02 > 0:24:04What do you think, Kelly?

0:24:04 > 0:24:07Like I said before, speechless, actually.

0:24:07 > 0:24:10I've never seen anything quite like it. Seriously wacky.

0:24:11 > 0:24:15- It's selling it to me. - It's selling it to you? - I just love it, absolutely love it.

0:24:16 > 0:24:19This house is fun and individual.

0:24:19 > 0:24:22Michael is enjoying its oddities but I'm not so sure about Kelly.

0:24:22 > 0:24:26However, the living spaces, which were almost entirely

0:24:26 > 0:24:30rebuilt in 2002, are where this house delivers on her criteria.

0:24:31 > 0:24:34This is where the open plan element to this property

0:24:34 > 0:24:37really starts to come into its own. This is your living room.

0:24:37 > 0:24:39Fabulous.

0:24:39 > 0:24:42That's an amazing space.

0:24:42 > 0:24:43Beautiful.

0:24:45 > 0:24:49It's just huge. It would take a lifetime to fill all this space.

0:24:49 > 0:24:52- Absolutely incredible.- Wonderful.

0:24:52 > 0:24:54- Lovely.- Would you be happy here?

0:24:54 > 0:24:56Yeah, I think so. From what I've seen.

0:24:56 > 0:24:59I think I might get a bit lost, to be honest.

0:24:59 > 0:25:02And we haven't finished yet. There's one more floor to go.

0:25:02 > 0:25:05'Now, Kelly wanted a kitchen connected to both outdoor

0:25:05 > 0:25:09'and family living spaces and up here, there is just that.

0:25:09 > 0:25:12'In one direction, the kitchen area with the stove and sink

0:25:12 > 0:25:16'looks out onto the property's outdoor space - a compact terrace.

0:25:16 > 0:25:18'And then in the other direction...'

0:25:18 > 0:25:21This is what they've currently got set up as their dining area.

0:25:23 > 0:25:26- Right. You can get lots of people in here.- Absolutely.

0:25:26 > 0:25:30It's a really interesting space.

0:25:30 > 0:25:34- It's got this city loft appeal... - Yes.- Yes.- ..actually.

0:25:34 > 0:25:37- Are you still lost for words? - I am. I am.

0:25:37 > 0:25:40Clearly, they are gastronauts.

0:25:40 > 0:25:42They do take their salami slicing quite seriously,

0:25:42 > 0:25:44as you can probably tell.

0:25:44 > 0:25:48My brain is going overtime calculating the cost of this.

0:25:48 > 0:25:49I'm quite confused.

0:25:49 > 0:25:52Well, let's deal with the cost now, shall we?

0:25:52 > 0:25:55Logically, this is all the budget and a bit more.

0:25:55 > 0:25:59I'm saying...£270,000.

0:26:01 > 0:26:03I think I'm with you on that.

0:26:03 > 0:26:05OK, I'm going to take you back to school.

0:26:05 > 0:26:09Here are the numbers you need to think about.

0:26:09 > 0:26:11You said 270 plus. OK.

0:26:15 > 0:26:17- It's a good start.- Good start?

0:26:19 > 0:26:21- I'll have a five.- Oh!

0:26:23 > 0:26:26- Wow.- Pounds.- Yes.

0:26:27 > 0:26:29- Could you do it?- Maybe.

0:26:30 > 0:26:35- Are you happy?- Yes.- I know it's a bit of a stretch but not bad really.

0:26:35 > 0:26:38- That's extraordinary. - It's a lot of house.

0:26:38 > 0:26:40Go and consider it carefully.

0:26:40 > 0:26:42Have a look at the terrace out there

0:26:42 > 0:26:45and I will catch up with you a little bit later outside.

0:26:45 > 0:26:49Off you go. See if you can find a place for that lemon tree.

0:26:49 > 0:26:54For just a nudge over their £260,000 budget,

0:26:54 > 0:26:57this extensive renovated town house is a one-off

0:26:57 > 0:26:59full of character and fun.

0:26:59 > 0:27:01There are four bedrooms, a unique bathroom

0:27:01 > 0:27:05and two floors of large well-connected living spaces.

0:27:05 > 0:27:09There's also a small outside terrace and it's located in a lively town.

0:27:10 > 0:27:16Right, not exactly wide-open spaces but...

0:27:16 > 0:27:20But it's outside space and it's attached to the kitchen, which is important.

0:27:20 > 0:27:25The style of the property is very interesting.

0:27:26 > 0:27:30But it's so big, I would feel lost in it.

0:27:30 > 0:27:34Yes, you could fill it with all family and friends,

0:27:34 > 0:27:36everybody could fit in here

0:27:36 > 0:27:43but when they weren't here, I think I could feel rather lonely in it.

0:27:43 > 0:27:45The style of the house is great, I love it.

0:27:45 > 0:27:51Clearly, they have spent a lot of money and done this properly.

0:27:51 > 0:27:54As far as the price is concerned, I mean, I think it's a bargain

0:27:54 > 0:27:57but you shouldn't buy a place just because it's a bargain if it's not right.

0:27:57 > 0:28:00Well, how are we doing, Kelly?

0:28:01 > 0:28:04- Good.- Yeah, good. Michael? - I loved it.

0:28:04 > 0:28:07I know you did. You're not so sure, are you?

0:28:07 > 0:28:09No, I don't think I'm so sure.

0:28:09 > 0:28:12I'm amazed, I loved it, I have to confess.

0:28:12 > 0:28:16But maybe now is the time to take a break from house-hunting.

0:28:16 > 0:28:19- Fancy a little walk for some fresh air?- Yes.- Come on.

0:28:27 > 0:28:29When Kelly and Michael make the move to Italy

0:28:29 > 0:28:32they are determined to make the most of the outdoors.

0:28:32 > 0:28:35As this part of Liguria is sheltered from cold northerly winds

0:28:35 > 0:28:38by the high mountain range of the Ligurian Alps,

0:28:38 > 0:28:41it has a temperate climate all year round.

0:28:41 > 0:28:43Summer temperatures reach the high 20s

0:28:43 > 0:28:47and in winter, the mercury rarely drops below five Celsius.

0:28:47 > 0:28:51'To get to know the area and find out more about life here,

0:28:51 > 0:28:54'we've arranged for Kelly and Michael to meet British expat, Lorenzo.'

0:28:54 > 0:28:57- Nice to see you. - Pleased to meet you.

0:28:57 > 0:29:00'Born in the UK to Italian parents, he, like Kelly,

0:29:00 > 0:29:03'spent some of his childhood in Liguria.

0:29:03 > 0:29:06'Ten years ago he left the UK, moved here permanently

0:29:06 > 0:29:09'and now runs a walking tour company.'

0:29:09 > 0:29:12- Welcome to Liguria.- Thank you.

0:29:12 > 0:29:14Well, I think a visit to this part of Liguria

0:29:14 > 0:29:17will cement your love for it. That's the idea.

0:29:17 > 0:29:19We've got a fantastic guide here in Lorenzo.

0:29:19 > 0:29:23You probably know these mountains like the back of your hand.

0:29:23 > 0:29:25Pretty much. It's the love for these mountains, for this interior,

0:29:25 > 0:29:27that brought me back here.

0:29:27 > 0:29:30This quality of light that you see today, and the sheer beauty

0:29:30 > 0:29:33and biodiversity, where you only look up there

0:29:33 > 0:29:36and you can see the autumn colours changing already.

0:29:36 > 0:29:40- The eyes are never tired, it's just spectacular.- How about that?

0:29:40 > 0:29:42The eyes are never tired. I'm hooked already.

0:29:42 > 0:29:44THEY LAUGH

0:29:44 > 0:29:48It's so close to the sky, it feels you're really up there. Wonderful.

0:29:48 > 0:29:52We haven't got all day, sadly, but we've got some time for you

0:29:52 > 0:29:56to give us a real taste of what these mountains are all about.

0:29:56 > 0:29:59Just follow me, I've got a great treat in store for you.

0:29:59 > 0:30:01- Go on, then, after you.- Thank you.

0:30:03 > 0:30:05In the foothills of the Alps, we are

0:30:05 > 0:30:09hiking along the old mule tracks to the village of Mendatica.

0:30:09 > 0:30:11The buildings here date back to the 15th century

0:30:11 > 0:30:14and include the church of St Margaret.

0:30:14 > 0:30:16Lovely. Love that door.

0:30:16 > 0:30:19- Oh, proper squeaky church door, isn't it?- Yes.

0:30:20 > 0:30:23So these are the wonderful frescoes, executed by

0:30:23 > 0:30:27Guido da Ranzo, a local artist, who was influenced

0:30:27 > 0:30:29by the Tuscan school of art,

0:30:29 > 0:30:33but the amazing thing about this particular fresco here...

0:30:33 > 0:30:37is of the Last Supper. We see many Last Suppers in Italy,

0:30:37 > 0:30:40but this depicts dishes of this area, which they

0:30:40 > 0:30:44still put in the restaurants of the area.

0:30:44 > 0:30:46Well, all this talk of food, and our walk,

0:30:46 > 0:30:49- has built up my appetite, I don't know about you two, are you hungry? - Yes.

0:30:49 > 0:30:52Well, I've just got the right sort of place where we can go

0:30:52 > 0:30:54and really enjoy authentic food.

0:30:54 > 0:30:56Oh, come on, off you go.

0:30:56 > 0:30:57HE LAUGHS

0:30:57 > 0:30:59Culture and lunch.

0:31:00 > 0:31:04The local mountain cuisine is known as Cucina Bianca, or

0:31:04 > 0:31:06"White Cuisine", because of its pale colour.

0:31:06 > 0:31:10Using mountain ingredients, such as mushrooms, potatoes,

0:31:10 > 0:31:13sheep and goat's cheese, as well as salami and bread, it's simple.

0:31:16 > 0:31:18The food is very different from the coastline,

0:31:18 > 0:31:23where you have fish and a variety of exotic fruits.

0:31:23 > 0:31:26Whereas here it is more akin to northern Europe.

0:31:26 > 0:31:28- And these are?- Turle.

0:31:28 > 0:31:31Made with a pastry of potato and mint inside.

0:31:31 > 0:31:33- Oh, go on.- Fabulous.

0:31:33 > 0:31:37One of the delicacies of the area, but simple food, very poor food.

0:31:37 > 0:31:40Does this remind you of your youth here?

0:31:40 > 0:31:43It absolutely does, and I have been looking forward to

0:31:43 > 0:31:47food like this for the last 40 years.

0:31:47 > 0:31:49I thought you were going to say 40 minutes.

0:31:49 > 0:31:5340 years. There we are. Look, tuck in, guys.

0:31:53 > 0:31:56Lorenzo, did you find it hard to

0:31:56 > 0:31:58adjust to life back here?

0:31:58 > 0:32:01I remember when I arrived, and some Italian friends said,

0:32:01 > 0:32:04"Well, welcome back, after 30 years, to Liguria."

0:32:04 > 0:32:07And they gave me a booklet. And the booklet reads, "The Ligurians...

0:32:07 > 0:32:09"the grumpy ones."

0:32:09 > 0:32:10THEY LAUGH

0:32:10 > 0:32:14I knew the nature of the people, which is quite reserved.

0:32:14 > 0:32:16People are quite shy in this area.

0:32:16 > 0:32:19At times they can look surly, but they are not.

0:32:19 > 0:32:22Once they know who you are, where you come from,

0:32:22 > 0:32:24they open out their hearts to you.

0:32:24 > 0:32:27One thing I would be interested in, Lorenzo, the cost of living.

0:32:27 > 0:32:29Is it very high?

0:32:29 > 0:32:33There is an incredible difference in cost of living,

0:32:33 > 0:32:35depending, in Liguria, where you are.

0:32:35 > 0:32:39The more you move inland, although you have more authenticity,

0:32:39 > 0:32:42the prices drop considerably down.

0:32:42 > 0:32:45So, actually, it's a kind of inverse graph, isn't it?

0:32:45 > 0:32:49You get more lifestyle, more Italy, if you will,

0:32:49 > 0:32:52the further inland you come. But actually it costs you less.

0:32:52 > 0:32:57- Much less.- So is there anything that you miss?- Well, I have a business.

0:32:57 > 0:33:00I think running a business in England, for example,

0:33:00 > 0:33:01is much easier.

0:33:01 > 0:33:05There's a lot more red tape here, without a shadow of a doubt. But...

0:33:05 > 0:33:08you reach a certain stage and age in your life

0:33:08 > 0:33:11and other values are more important.

0:33:11 > 0:33:13Your surroundings, family values,

0:33:13 > 0:33:17and for me it was just coming back home, so it was the right decision.

0:33:17 > 0:33:20I think that's rather similar, in a way, to what you are trying to do,

0:33:20 > 0:33:22because you are sort of recapturing,

0:33:22 > 0:33:24retracing the steps of your youth, aren't you?

0:33:24 > 0:33:27Yes, yes, there's definitely that element to it.

0:33:27 > 0:33:30- Lorenzo, thank you very much for your time.- Thank you.

0:33:30 > 0:33:32- Cheers.- Salute.- Salute!- Salute!

0:33:32 > 0:33:36- Or chin-chin.- Chin-chin.- Chin-chin.

0:33:36 > 0:33:39Moving to Italy brings with it particular financial

0:33:39 > 0:33:41and logistical considerations.

0:33:41 > 0:33:45In terms of the property purchase, 8% of the price is the amount you

0:33:45 > 0:33:50should expect to pay in solicitors' cost, stamp duty and agents.

0:33:50 > 0:33:53Spending more than 183 days a year in Italy qualifies

0:33:53 > 0:33:58you as an Italian tax resident, even if you work and pay tax in the UK.

0:33:58 > 0:34:01The system is complicated, and getting professional

0:34:01 > 0:34:04advice about your status before a move is advisable.

0:34:04 > 0:34:08One of the best ways to integrate is to find a local language

0:34:08 > 0:34:11exchange group. Made up of English speakers wanting to

0:34:11 > 0:34:14better their Italian, and Italians wanting to improve their English,

0:34:14 > 0:34:17they have regular socials to brush up on language skills...

0:34:17 > 0:34:19and, of course, make friends.

0:34:26 > 0:34:29It's the start of our final day house-hunting in the Italian

0:34:29 > 0:34:33region of Liguria, and we've still got plenty to see.

0:34:33 > 0:34:38With a budget of £260,000, Kelly and Michael from Cornwall plan to begin

0:34:38 > 0:34:42a new chapter in their lives, but only once they've found the right property.

0:34:42 > 0:34:47This whole process is just short-cutting so much for us.

0:34:47 > 0:34:50Well, it focuses the mind as to actually what it is you do want.

0:34:50 > 0:34:54- Yeah.- I've realised I don't want that

0:34:54 > 0:34:56- classic town house...- Yeah.

0:34:56 > 0:34:59..thing of one room on top of another.

0:34:59 > 0:35:01The other thing is, dare I say it,

0:35:01 > 0:35:04to look at an apartment with a big balcony.

0:35:06 > 0:35:08Normally by this stage, I've got a pretty good

0:35:08 > 0:35:13idea of what our buyers are after, but on this occasion I'm finding

0:35:13 > 0:35:15it very hard to read, in particular

0:35:15 > 0:35:18what is going on in Kelly's mind.

0:35:18 > 0:35:20Michael is really enthusiastic about this move,

0:35:20 > 0:35:23he is supporting her and her wish to get back to a place

0:35:23 > 0:35:26she remembers fondly from her childhood,

0:35:26 > 0:35:30but so far nothing really has caused a wow.

0:35:30 > 0:35:31So it's all to play for today,

0:35:31 > 0:35:35we've got two more properties to come, including our Mystery House,

0:35:35 > 0:35:37so hopefully, by the end of play,

0:35:37 > 0:35:40we may at last find out what exactly Kelly is after.

0:35:44 > 0:35:47For our next offering we are going to the city of Albenga,

0:35:47 > 0:35:49which is right on the coast.

0:35:49 > 0:35:52It's a busy place of just under 25,000 people,

0:35:52 > 0:35:56who populate the cafes, bars and piazzas of the old town.

0:35:57 > 0:36:01It's just the sort of sociable place I think our buyers would like.

0:36:01 > 0:36:05It's also an important historical town with magnificent

0:36:05 > 0:36:09buildings such as the Cathedral of St Michael the Archangel.

0:36:09 > 0:36:12The city's popular with tourists, who flock to the string of small

0:36:12 > 0:36:15public beaches linked by a two-mile promenade.

0:36:19 > 0:36:22What we've got for you is something slightly different.

0:36:22 > 0:36:24We've had lots of stairs,

0:36:24 > 0:36:27so what we've gone for is a single-storey apartment.

0:36:27 > 0:36:30- Right.- Interesting.- Come and have a look.

0:36:33 > 0:36:36The apartment is on the first floor of a palazzo,

0:36:36 > 0:36:39built in the 1500s by the Del Carretto family,

0:36:39 > 0:36:41who were important local nobility.

0:36:41 > 0:36:43Now, the stairs widen considerably

0:36:43 > 0:36:46when you get up to your floor.

0:36:46 > 0:36:50And the reason for that is sort of simple, really.

0:36:50 > 0:36:52The whole thing was built as quite a lavish town house

0:36:52 > 0:36:56in the 16th century by the Marques Carretto.

0:36:56 > 0:36:59But the story is, they say,

0:36:59 > 0:37:01that he had the stairs widened

0:37:01 > 0:37:03- so he could get his horse up here. - KELLY LAUGHS

0:37:03 > 0:37:05- Great style.- Slightly bonkers, maybe.

0:37:05 > 0:37:08The good news is there is also a lift today,

0:37:08 > 0:37:11and this is no longer some sort of stable.

0:37:11 > 0:37:12Come and have a look.

0:37:15 > 0:37:18- There we are.- Oh!

0:37:18 > 0:37:21- Yes?- Yes.

0:37:21 > 0:37:22Oh, very nice.

0:37:22 > 0:37:27I do really like this, I think it's got a very nice feel to it.

0:37:27 > 0:37:29I think he's as surprised as I am.

0:37:29 > 0:37:31THEY LAUGH

0:37:31 > 0:37:34- No, but it's...- But I can see why.

0:37:34 > 0:37:38It feels like it's got space, but it's not...

0:37:38 > 0:37:42massive, it's not huge, and you could get plenty of people in here.

0:37:42 > 0:37:45But also it would be fine if I was here on my own.

0:37:45 > 0:37:47- You're not going to rattle around on your own.- No.- No.

0:37:47 > 0:37:50This has two bedrooms and two bathrooms.

0:37:50 > 0:37:52The master is through here.

0:37:55 > 0:37:57Of the two bedrooms there is a smaller one, which has high

0:37:57 > 0:38:00vaulted ceilings, a mezzanine section for storage

0:38:00 > 0:38:02and an en suite bathroom.

0:38:03 > 0:38:05Next door is a large family bathroom,

0:38:05 > 0:38:09and on the other side of that is the bigger of the two bedrooms.

0:38:09 > 0:38:11There you are.

0:38:11 > 0:38:13Oh, wow.

0:38:13 > 0:38:16That's a big window.

0:38:16 > 0:38:19And a lot of storage. Goodness.

0:38:19 > 0:38:21Serious storage. For an apartment.

0:38:21 > 0:38:25It is essential, actually, to have a big whack of storage somewhere.

0:38:25 > 0:38:28You've also got this mezzanine arrangement. Not full head height up there,

0:38:28 > 0:38:31but, I don't know, a bit more storage.

0:38:31 > 0:38:34What occurs to me with the family coming, two beds up there.

0:38:34 > 0:38:37You could do. We are brokering this as the master bedroom.

0:38:37 > 0:38:40However, next door does have an en suite,

0:38:40 > 0:38:42so they are interchangeable.

0:38:42 > 0:38:46So if you wanted this to have a bit more bed space... The family dorm.

0:38:46 > 0:38:49- Absolutely.- Yes.- They'd be cool with that.

0:38:49 > 0:38:52- They're all used...- And they would really enjoy it.

0:38:52 > 0:38:55- They'd be fine.- They have been doing it half their life. HE LAUGHS

0:38:55 > 0:38:56So with a bit of ingenuity,

0:38:56 > 0:39:00this two bedroom apartment could accommodate plenty of guests,

0:39:00 > 0:39:04whilst not being too big a space for Kelly when she's on her own.

0:39:04 > 0:39:08This is going very well but, as I know, it's the kitchen

0:39:08 > 0:39:11and outside space that will swing any decision.

0:39:11 > 0:39:15It's nice, isn't it? Nice mix of the contemporary. And...

0:39:15 > 0:39:19I absolutely love that ceiling. I think that's great.

0:39:19 > 0:39:22Because some ornate ceilings can be a bit OTT and oppressive,

0:39:22 > 0:39:25but that feels modern, even though it's original.

0:39:27 > 0:39:30And I really like the way they've laid it out.

0:39:30 > 0:39:32- Very nice.- I agree.

0:39:32 > 0:39:35Let's deal with the outside space, it's right here.

0:39:37 > 0:39:40- Proper outside space. - That's a proper terrace.

0:39:40 > 0:39:43- Now you're flowing out the kitchen.- Yeah.

0:39:43 > 0:39:46Everything you talked about in your outdoor living.

0:39:46 > 0:39:49- Yeah. Very much what I like.- I think you're absolutely right.

0:39:49 > 0:39:51You would spend a huge amount of time out here.

0:39:51 > 0:39:55- You really could use this as another room.- Yes, most definitely.

0:39:55 > 0:40:00- Mmm. I like it.- I'm very happily surprised, the size of this.

0:40:00 > 0:40:02So let's think about the price, then.

0:40:02 > 0:40:06Well, I think I've been way overestimating things.

0:40:07 > 0:40:09I'm going to say...

0:40:09 > 0:40:12- 230.- I'd love to think it's going to be about that,

0:40:12 > 0:40:16I was thinking slightly less, but I'm going to be safe and say 230.

0:40:16 > 0:40:19- 230, say the pair of you?- Yes. - I wish it were.

0:40:19 > 0:40:21- Oh. - THEY LAUGH

0:40:21 > 0:40:23- Ah!- But it's good news.

0:40:23 > 0:40:27It is actually under budget, it's on at £258,000.

0:40:27 > 0:40:30- Just creeping in there.- Right, then.

0:40:30 > 0:40:33There's not much more to see, to be honest. Have a wander around and

0:40:33 > 0:40:36- make sure you've got the geography of it firmly implanted in your minds.- Right.

0:40:36 > 0:40:38I'll see you later.

0:40:39 > 0:40:42There we are. Well, that little look around won't take very long, I suspect,

0:40:42 > 0:40:45but it's well worth trying to memorise every little detail of these

0:40:45 > 0:40:48properties because, at the end of the day, this is a big decision to

0:40:48 > 0:40:51make, it is a lot of money to spend, but maybe

0:40:51 > 0:40:53they'll spend it here.

0:40:54 > 0:40:56So, for just £2,000 under budget,

0:40:56 > 0:40:59this historic apartment gives two bedrooms which, thanks to

0:40:59 > 0:41:02a mezzanine area, would accommodate plenty of visiting family.

0:41:02 > 0:41:05It has a living room which is well connected to the kitchen,

0:41:05 > 0:41:08which opens out onto the all-important terrace.

0:41:08 > 0:41:10And it's in a buzzing little town on the coast.

0:41:13 > 0:41:14Oh.

0:41:14 > 0:41:17Right, interesting.

0:41:17 > 0:41:19- Right.- Bathroom.- This is the en suite.

0:41:19 > 0:41:23Well, having seen the other, I'm thinking even more now this could be a room for us.

0:41:23 > 0:41:28- OK, it's quite pink.- A couple of pots of paint.- Could change that.

0:41:28 > 0:41:30I was really hoping you would show us an apartment,

0:41:30 > 0:41:34because we did have an open mind about the sort of property.

0:41:34 > 0:41:38And having seen it, I'm really surprised how it does...

0:41:38 > 0:41:40address a lot of our needs.

0:41:40 > 0:41:45As apartments go, it's got the high ceilings, but it's not too

0:41:45 > 0:41:48cold, but it's still got the right flow of the

0:41:48 > 0:41:51indoor and outdoor space.

0:41:51 > 0:41:54I think, so far, this is the best.

0:41:54 > 0:41:58Definitely. I could see myself here.

0:41:59 > 0:42:03Realistically, actually this could make a really good home.

0:42:04 > 0:42:08I love the way the kitchen just comes straight out onto the terrace.

0:42:08 > 0:42:10- A couple of doors wide open. - Which is what you need.

0:42:10 > 0:42:14- Exactly what I wanted, yes.- Oh!

0:42:14 > 0:42:16Is there a sense of happiness and agreement?

0:42:16 > 0:42:19Yes, I think there is. Yes.

0:42:19 > 0:42:23I think this is a really strong contender, I really do.

0:42:23 > 0:42:25Albenga, I adore.

0:42:25 > 0:42:28This so far is probably my favourite. There you are...

0:42:28 > 0:42:31- Certainly mine.- Good.

0:42:31 > 0:42:34But it's not over yet, we've got two more treats for you...this afternoon.

0:42:34 > 0:42:37- The first is lunch.- Excellent. - And the second

0:42:37 > 0:42:39- is our Mystery House.- Mmm.- Right.

0:42:39 > 0:42:40- Shall we?- Yes.

0:42:48 > 0:42:50For our final Mystery House, we're going back

0:42:50 > 0:42:54up into the mountains to the tiny village of Vellego.

0:42:54 > 0:42:58It's 25 minutes from the nearest lively town, with only 60 residents.

0:42:58 > 0:43:03There are no shops, but there is a restaurant which forms the social heart.

0:43:03 > 0:43:05And a few minutes out of the village, and set on its own,

0:43:05 > 0:43:07is our final offering.

0:43:09 > 0:43:12Come on down these few steps. There we are, guys.

0:43:12 > 0:43:14That is our Mystery House.

0:43:14 > 0:43:18- Mmm!- We've gone for something a little more rural.- Completely different.

0:43:18 > 0:43:19Very rural.

0:43:19 > 0:43:23It has this fantastic wraparound veranda-cum-balcony,

0:43:23 > 0:43:27which absolutely milks those views over to the village.

0:43:27 > 0:43:31- Stunning, absolutely stunning. - Right, let's see what you think.

0:43:31 > 0:43:32Let's have a look.

0:43:33 > 0:43:36What the Mystery House offers is a property with some garden,

0:43:36 > 0:43:38which I feel Kelly is hankering after,

0:43:38 > 0:43:42but to get this, it is located outside of a community.

0:43:42 > 0:43:44There.

0:43:45 > 0:43:47- KELLY LAUGHS - Very typical.

0:43:47 > 0:43:50These lovely windows, that really make the best of that view,

0:43:50 > 0:43:52of course. And of course the dining space as well,

0:43:52 > 0:43:55- so it is very simple, it is quite spartan.- It's a room.

0:43:55 > 0:43:57SHE LAUGHS

0:43:57 > 0:44:02- Is it a nice room?- Potentially. - I think potentially it is, yes.

0:44:02 > 0:44:03- It's all about...- Yes.

0:44:03 > 0:44:05And I wanted open-plan,

0:44:05 > 0:44:08and you've got the doors that open

0:44:08 > 0:44:10straight out, so, yes.

0:44:10 > 0:44:14It does need a bit of imagination, I think, but it is all kind of here.

0:44:14 > 0:44:16This is the kitchen. There you go.

0:44:18 > 0:44:21- Nice view out there.- It's nice.

0:44:21 > 0:44:24These doors all lead on to this balcony that wraps

0:44:24 > 0:44:27itself around the property, which is stunning.

0:44:27 > 0:44:30To be honest, I'd take a sledgehammer to that wall,

0:44:30 > 0:44:34open it out completely and just turn it into one big room.

0:44:34 > 0:44:35That's the spirit.

0:44:35 > 0:44:38Imagination. That's what I asked for and that's what you're giving me.

0:44:38 > 0:44:41I think that was a royal I, referring to the sledgehammer.

0:44:41 > 0:44:42That's you, is it?

0:44:42 > 0:44:44THEY LAUGH

0:44:44 > 0:44:47But, yes, I agree completely. It would be fabulous.

0:44:47 > 0:44:50Let's have a quick look at the bedroom here.

0:44:51 > 0:44:53The main house is all on one level.

0:44:53 > 0:44:56There is a bathroom, which serves the two bedrooms,

0:44:56 > 0:44:59the smaller of which could be a guest room.

0:44:59 > 0:45:02So this is by far the biggest of the two.

0:45:02 > 0:45:06- Oh.- It's probably twice as big as what is next door, to be honest. - Right.

0:45:06 > 0:45:10- Hence this, we think, would be the master.- Yes.

0:45:10 > 0:45:14- Oh, what an aspect.- Yes, it is all about that, isn't it?

0:45:14 > 0:45:15Just listen.

0:45:15 > 0:45:18BIRDS TWEET

0:45:18 > 0:45:20- It's just the birds.- Fabulous.

0:45:20 > 0:45:22I mean, I think this room makes it for me, to be perfectly honest.

0:45:22 > 0:45:25- The idea of waking up with that to greet me.- Yeah.

0:45:27 > 0:45:29This is what I had in mind.

0:45:29 > 0:45:32Does it hark back to what you remember as a child?

0:45:32 > 0:45:34Yes, the simple tile floors,

0:45:34 > 0:45:37big windows, opening out, sunshine.

0:45:39 > 0:45:42Below the house is an annexe with a large bedroom and bathroom.

0:45:42 > 0:45:45There is also an outdoor terrace area, which is

0:45:45 > 0:45:48part constructed and would need a bit of finishing off, but it's the

0:45:48 > 0:45:51outside area attached to the main house which I think

0:45:51 > 0:45:53is the real draw here.

0:45:53 > 0:45:57- There.- Wow.- It's what it's all about.

0:45:57 > 0:45:59- It really is, isn't it? - That's amazing.

0:45:59 > 0:46:02There's Vellego. Look at the little bell tower over there.

0:46:02 > 0:46:04- BELL RINGS - Oh!- Right on cue.- On cue.

0:46:04 > 0:46:08You know, if we tried to do that, it wouldn't have happened.

0:46:08 > 0:46:11- Kelly, what's that? - It's a lemon tree.

0:46:11 > 0:46:13- It certainly is. - THEY LAUGH

0:46:13 > 0:46:16- And it's got a lot of lemons on it. - Happy?- Yes.

0:46:16 > 0:46:19Yeah. See, that's another reason why we picked this as the Mystery House.

0:46:19 > 0:46:22The plot size itself is really defined by that fence that is

0:46:22 > 0:46:23right below us.

0:46:23 > 0:46:26Although a bit more of this land is available if you would want it.

0:46:26 > 0:46:30So have you got any thoughts on price at this moment?

0:46:30 > 0:46:33- Say 180.- 200, to be more realistic.

0:46:33 > 0:46:36- 200.- It's a lot of house.- You're not far off, guys.

0:46:36 > 0:46:41It is on the market for just under, it is £197,000.

0:46:41 > 0:46:44We've explored up here, go and have a good old look down there.

0:46:44 > 0:46:47- And I will come and find you later on.- Thank you.

0:46:47 > 0:46:50- Right, go that way.- Thank you.

0:46:53 > 0:46:56So, for £63,000 under budget,

0:46:56 > 0:46:58this hillside rural retreat has

0:46:58 > 0:47:01two bedrooms in the main house plus a one-bedroom guest annexe.

0:47:01 > 0:47:03It is simple and open-plan

0:47:03 > 0:47:06and has spectacular views out across the mountains.

0:47:06 > 0:47:08It's got its own strip of garden with a lemon tree,

0:47:08 > 0:47:12but the sacrifice is not being located in a village community.

0:47:12 > 0:47:13Lemon tree.

0:47:14 > 0:47:16Covered in lemons.

0:47:17 > 0:47:19- It's not ripe yet.- Smell that. Smell that.

0:47:19 > 0:47:24- Oh...- Fabulous.- ..wonderful! - Absolutely...- Wonderful. And an olive tree.

0:47:24 > 0:47:26The house, I think, is absolutely typical, great Italian property.

0:47:26 > 0:47:30The style, I love, the big veranda and the windows.

0:47:30 > 0:47:31Great price.

0:47:32 > 0:47:35HE SIGHS Private helicopter, whizz down town, great.

0:47:35 > 0:47:39But, in the real world, it's...it's a dilemma.

0:47:39 > 0:47:43It's the most amazing location, it's like Shangri-La.

0:47:43 > 0:47:46Hidden away, but it's very remote.

0:47:46 > 0:47:49I want to pick it up and just move it

0:47:49 > 0:47:5120km down the mountain.

0:47:53 > 0:47:56What a view to finish our series of

0:47:56 > 0:47:58- Ligurian house tours with.- Amazing.

0:47:58 > 0:48:02I always hoped we'd see something like that on this trip,

0:48:02 > 0:48:04and I haven't been disappointed.

0:48:04 > 0:48:07And I think we've given you some really good options to think about.

0:48:07 > 0:48:09I think you have.

0:48:09 > 0:48:12Have we tempted you enough to buy one? Who knows?

0:48:12 > 0:48:15- You've got lots to think about. - We have.- Should we go?- Yes.

0:48:15 > 0:48:18- Glass of wine, anyone?- Yes. - Oh, come on, then.

0:48:29 > 0:48:34So far, we've spent much of our house hunt in Liguria's western Riviera.

0:48:34 > 0:48:38But now I'm heading to the eastern stretch and the town of Chiavari.

0:48:38 > 0:48:41For centuries it was an important commercial port filled with

0:48:41 > 0:48:45hundreds of traditional enterprises based in the ancient arcades.

0:48:45 > 0:48:49Remarkably, some of the old trades continue today and I'm meeting Princi -

0:48:49 > 0:48:54a local resident who can help me find out more.

0:48:54 > 0:48:57- Princi.- Hi, Jules. - Nice to see you.- Nice to see you.

0:48:59 > 0:49:01The medieval old town is full of caruggi -

0:49:01 > 0:49:04the name given to the typical narrow streets.

0:49:05 > 0:49:10Princi, this is a beautiful town and its history is everywhere.

0:49:10 > 0:49:14- But what's it most famous for? - The famous food is corzetti.

0:49:14 > 0:49:20- And my best friend makes Curzetti Stampae.- Your best friend?

0:49:20 > 0:49:21Yeah, my best friend.

0:49:21 > 0:49:25- I have come to the right place. - Yeah.

0:49:25 > 0:49:27Corzetti is a type of pasta.

0:49:27 > 0:49:29In shape it's like a medallion

0:49:29 > 0:49:33and it's imprinted with a design made by a wooden stamp.

0:49:33 > 0:49:35It's unique to Liguria.

0:49:35 > 0:49:37Franco Casoni, a world-famous sculptor

0:49:37 > 0:49:42and woodcarver, is one craftsman who is still making these stamps.

0:49:42 > 0:49:44- Hi, Franco.- Ciao.

0:49:44 > 0:49:47Franco, this is Jules. This is Franco, my best friend.

0:49:47 > 0:49:49- Very nice to see you.- My name is Franco.

0:49:49 > 0:49:51He makes Curzetti Stampae.

0:49:51 > 0:49:55So you're making the pasta with patterns in it

0:49:55 > 0:49:58- and these are what you use to get the design?- Yeah.

0:49:58 > 0:50:02And what's the history behind the Curzetti Stampae?

0:50:02 > 0:50:08OK, in the middle age, the bread was home-made

0:50:08 > 0:50:11but not cooked in the houses.

0:50:11 > 0:50:18So they brought the bread to a common bakery

0:50:18 > 0:50:24and they needed to put a mark on the bread to recognise it.

0:50:24 > 0:50:29- So the stamp meant that you got your bread back from the bakery.- Yeah.

0:50:29 > 0:50:35Only in Italy would I find a story that combines beautiful craftsmanship with food.

0:50:35 > 0:50:37Si. Yeah.

0:50:39 > 0:50:42This tradition of marking food then moved to pasta.

0:50:42 > 0:50:46The designs became more ingenious, featuring coats of arms,

0:50:46 > 0:50:48names, and lucky symbols.

0:50:51 > 0:50:55- Any design is put on? Yeah. - You prefer this design?

0:50:55 > 0:50:59- The name, your name.- Well, my name, it's a Latin name, actually.

0:50:59 > 0:51:03- It's Julian or Jules for short. - Look.

0:51:03 > 0:51:06- This moment.- He's going to do this in no...

0:51:06 > 0:51:09This is going to be a speed cut, isn't it?

0:51:11 > 0:51:16'Each stamp has a top and bottom and can feature a different design.

0:51:16 > 0:51:20'They're made from beech, as it's a wood which doesn't flavour the food.'

0:51:20 > 0:51:22He's so quick, he's so fast.

0:51:25 > 0:51:29- Ah! - HE LAUGHS

0:51:29 > 0:51:31I love it, Franco, well done.

0:51:31 > 0:51:37- But, doesn't it need another side, another half?- Yes, this is the top.

0:51:37 > 0:51:40- Are you going to try to carve it? - Can I try and do this?- Yeah.

0:51:49 > 0:51:52Of course, we're doing it backwards, which doesn't help.

0:51:56 > 0:51:57I have no room for the S.

0:51:59 > 0:52:02No, no, no. S, this.

0:52:05 > 0:52:06Oh!

0:52:08 > 0:52:09- OK. Bravo.- Just.

0:52:11 > 0:52:12Bravo.

0:52:12 > 0:52:17There, there's the top and there's your perfect bottom.

0:52:17 > 0:52:19So what do you think, Princi?

0:52:19 > 0:52:25They are fine but I think that we need to test it with pasta.

0:52:25 > 0:52:27Thank you very much. I'm really hungry, let's go. Come on.

0:52:27 > 0:52:31- Ciao.- Ciao.- Ciao.

0:52:31 > 0:52:34Just around the corner is a traditional Ligurian trattoria,

0:52:34 > 0:52:38where chef, Samir, serves corzetti pasta.

0:52:38 > 0:52:39- Hi, Samir.- Hi.

0:52:39 > 0:52:41This is Jules.

0:52:41 > 0:52:44Hi, Samir. Nice to see you.

0:52:44 > 0:52:48We have a Curzetti Stampae.

0:52:48 > 0:52:51- So we just need some pasta to go with it.- Yeah, yeah.

0:52:51 > 0:52:53We've come to the right place.

0:52:53 > 0:52:56What kind of a dish is he going to make for us?

0:52:56 > 0:53:00We will eat a dish with corzetti and pesto.

0:53:00 > 0:53:02I love pesto.

0:53:03 > 0:53:06The medallions are cut out from the rolled pasta

0:53:06 > 0:53:09and are then ready to be stamped.

0:53:09 > 0:53:12- It's like making biscuits, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:53:14 > 0:53:18Franco's stamp is on the top half and my effort is on the bottom.

0:53:21 > 0:53:26Well, let's see how they've worked out. There we are, Princi.

0:53:26 > 0:53:30- That is Franco's side, isn't it? - Yes.- It's nice.

0:53:30 > 0:53:34- But, let's have a look, ready? - Yeah.

0:53:34 > 0:53:36- SHE LAUGHS - It's rubbish.

0:53:36 > 0:53:39That's my side, you can barely see it.

0:53:39 > 0:53:41But it's not going to affect what they taste like.

0:53:41 > 0:53:46I can't wait to try that covered in pesto, beautifully cooked.

0:53:46 > 0:53:48There we are, sir. Thank you very much.

0:53:48 > 0:53:52- Let's leave the chef to his work. Come on.- OK.

0:53:52 > 0:53:56It's not just these stamps that are unique to Liguria.

0:53:56 > 0:53:57So too is pesto.

0:53:57 > 0:53:59It originated in Genoa,

0:53:59 > 0:54:02but is now one of the most popular sauces across Italy.

0:54:02 > 0:54:07It's made with garlic, basil, pine nuts, oil and Parmesan.

0:54:07 > 0:54:10One thing that has become more obvious to me

0:54:10 > 0:54:12is just how important food is.

0:54:12 > 0:54:15Yeah, it is our identity

0:54:15 > 0:54:21this kind of food and for Italians it's very important.

0:54:25 > 0:54:28- Grazie.- Grazie.

0:54:28 > 0:54:31I can't actually see the marks of the stamp any more

0:54:31 > 0:54:35but that doesn't matter because it's now covered, bathed, in pesto.

0:54:35 > 0:54:37Ready?

0:54:37 > 0:54:39Bon appetit in Italy.

0:54:41 > 0:54:44You probably would expect me to say this...

0:54:44 > 0:54:49but, genuinely, that is absolutely delicious.

0:54:49 > 0:54:52It's handmade pasta, it's handmade pesto.

0:54:52 > 0:54:56It's been stamped with my very own handmade stamp.

0:54:56 > 0:54:59- Princi, thank you very much. - Cheers.- Cheers.

0:54:59 > 0:55:01Here's to you. And Chiavari.

0:55:07 > 0:55:09So, with all our houses viewed,

0:55:09 > 0:55:14we've come to the end of our property hunt in Liguria.

0:55:14 > 0:55:16- Is that everything?- Not quite.- Oh, no, don't forget that.

0:55:16 > 0:55:19- Goodness.- And... Lemons.

0:55:19 > 0:55:21My lovely lemons.

0:55:21 > 0:55:23It's time to pack up and think about what they have seen

0:55:23 > 0:55:26and make some decisions about what's next.

0:55:29 > 0:55:32Well, how about that for a bit of Italian fun?

0:55:32 > 0:55:34And that's what we've been having this week - loads of fun.

0:55:34 > 0:55:35But, with a serious intent -

0:55:35 > 0:55:40to try and find Michael and Kelly a place they can call home in Liguria.

0:55:40 > 0:55:43We've spoiled them, frankly, with options, they can choose only one.

0:55:43 > 0:55:47But which one will it be? Well, let's go and ask them.

0:55:53 > 0:55:56- Well, Kelly and Michael, it's been quite a fun few days.- It has.

0:55:56 > 0:55:59- It's been great.- Exhausted? Yes. - A rollercoaster.

0:56:01 > 0:56:05We've given you lots of options but which one was your favourite?

0:56:05 > 0:56:08I think I'd have to say the Mystery House.

0:56:08 > 0:56:12That surprises me and I think it surprises Michael too. Why?

0:56:12 > 0:56:16Because I could see the potential in it.

0:56:16 > 0:56:18Beautiful location,

0:56:18 > 0:56:22looking across that stunning village was just gorgeous.

0:56:22 > 0:56:25I think if you and I had to make a bet we'd have said it was

0:56:25 > 0:56:28- the apartment in Albenga.- Yes.

0:56:28 > 0:56:31I did like that, I did like that a lot, actually.

0:56:31 > 0:56:36And I could see myself spending some very happy times

0:56:36 > 0:56:38pottering about in that apartment.

0:56:38 > 0:56:42But there was something about just being able to have that garden,

0:56:42 > 0:56:44little bit of garden.

0:56:44 > 0:56:47That last house, lovely house, but we have a budget.

0:56:47 > 0:56:50That house is where it is because it's within the budget.

0:56:50 > 0:56:52Move it where you want it and we can't afford it.

0:56:52 > 0:56:56And we can't get away from the fact that we like being

0:56:56 > 0:56:59near people in a community and no matter how lovely the other

0:56:59 > 0:57:03place would be, I don't think we'd enjoy it in the long term.

0:57:03 > 0:57:07You loved the Mystery House for all its charm and simplicity and because

0:57:07 > 0:57:11it harks back to what you knew here as a child and, of course, those views.

0:57:11 > 0:57:13But you recognise it's in the wrong place.

0:57:13 > 0:57:16So what would be on your wish list now?

0:57:16 > 0:57:18What will you go looking for in the future?

0:57:18 > 0:57:21- Well, I know what I'm going to look for.- Go on.

0:57:21 > 0:57:27I'm going to look for that little house further down the hill!

0:57:27 > 0:57:28Sorry.

0:57:28 > 0:57:31Well, guys, it's been a lot of fun, as I'm sure anybody

0:57:31 > 0:57:33- watching this will know. - It's been great.

0:57:33 > 0:57:36We've explored, we've travelled, we've met some great people,

0:57:36 > 0:57:39we've seen some fantastic countryside.

0:57:39 > 0:57:41And we've rather enjoyed the food and drink, haven't we?

0:57:41 > 0:57:45We certainly have. It's been great, thank you very much.

0:57:45 > 0:57:49- Well, here's to you. Cheers. - Chin-chin.- Salute.

0:57:53 > 0:57:54You know, I have to confess,

0:57:54 > 0:57:57that I have fallen a little bit in love with Liguria this week,

0:57:57 > 0:58:00just as Kelly did all those years ago.

0:58:00 > 0:58:02And although it is a bit disappointing that
