0:00:02 > 0:00:04In 1940, this tiny island found itself at the centre
0:00:04 > 0:00:05of a battle between Allied
0:00:05 > 0:00:09and enemy forces for naval supremacy in the Mediterranean.
0:00:09 > 0:00:15By 1942, it had become the most bombed place on Earth.
0:00:15 > 0:00:18Find out which country I am in, in just a moment.
0:00:37 > 0:00:41On today's house hunt, I employ my very subtle powers of persuasion.
0:00:41 > 0:00:44You don't buy this house, I'm going to chop off your head,
0:00:44 > 0:00:46how is that as a deal?
0:00:46 > 0:00:48Throw a few curveballs...
0:00:48 > 0:00:50You do make things difficult, don't you?
0:00:52 > 0:00:53And deliver some crackers.
0:00:53 > 0:00:56I think Johnny needs to get his chequebook out. I love this house.
0:01:01 > 0:01:03Welcome to Escape To The Continent.
0:01:03 > 0:01:07Now, this behind me is the capital city of Valletta, in Malta,
0:01:07 > 0:01:10a small island that fell victim to intense
0:01:10 > 0:01:12bombardment during the Second World War
0:01:12 > 0:01:15due to its strategic position in the Mediterranean.
0:01:15 > 0:01:21Now, during that war, Malta was hit by some 15,000 tonnes of bombs
0:01:21 > 0:01:24and holds the record for the longest sustained attack,
0:01:24 > 0:01:27which lasted 154 days.
0:01:27 > 0:01:33But the population of some 270,000 people refused to surrender.
0:01:33 > 0:01:37And as a reward, King George VI presented Malta and its residents
0:01:37 > 0:01:40with Britain's highest civilian honour for bravery -
0:01:40 > 0:01:42the George Cross.
0:01:42 > 0:01:47Today, Malta still shows the scars of battle etched on its landscape.
0:01:47 > 0:01:50But that doesn't detract from the natural beauty
0:01:50 > 0:01:54and centuries of fascinating history that this country has to offer.
0:01:55 > 0:01:59Just under a four-hour flight from the UK, Malta is
0:01:59 > 0:02:03located 60 miles south of Sicily, in the middle of the Mediterranean,
0:02:03 > 0:02:06between Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.
0:02:08 > 0:02:10Its location between continents has seen it
0:02:10 > 0:02:13occupied by everyone from the Greeks, Romans
0:02:13 > 0:02:18and Arabs to, more recently, 150 years of British governance.
0:02:18 > 0:02:22Malta gained independence in 1964 and is now part of the EU.
0:02:24 > 0:02:28At just 122 square miles, Malta is smaller than the Isle of Wight.
0:02:28 > 0:02:31But with nearly 422,000 residents, it is
0:02:31 > 0:02:35one of the most densely populated countries in the world.
0:02:35 > 0:02:39The capital city, Valletta, packed into less than a square mile,
0:02:39 > 0:02:43is one of the most concentrated historic areas on the globe
0:02:43 > 0:02:45and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
0:02:45 > 0:02:48But it is not simply a historian's paradise.
0:02:48 > 0:02:51Modern Valletta is a vibrant, busy city
0:02:51 > 0:02:53great for shopping and socialising.
0:02:53 > 0:02:56Overlooking the city is a hilltop battery of cannons,
0:02:56 > 0:03:00which today draws in visitors with its daily mid-day gun salute.
0:03:02 > 0:03:05Malta has no shortage of stunning scenery
0:03:05 > 0:03:08with a coastline that varies from spectacular rugged cliffs
0:03:08 > 0:03:13and natural rock formations to golden, sandy beaches.
0:03:13 > 0:03:16With its rich history and culture, beautiful landscapes
0:03:16 > 0:03:19and nearly year-round sunshine, it is clear to see why Brits
0:03:19 > 0:03:24are drawn to this island and many choose to make Malta their home.
0:03:28 > 0:03:32Malta is a small island with a high population density,
0:03:32 > 0:03:34which means land is scarce.
0:03:34 > 0:03:37So when it comes to property out here,
0:03:37 > 0:03:40those of you with green fingers, be warned -
0:03:40 > 0:03:43gardens are rare so come at a premium.
0:03:43 > 0:03:46Waterfront homes in the north of the island command
0:03:46 > 0:03:48some of the highest prices,
0:03:48 > 0:03:51particularly in Sliema, St Julian's and Valletta.
0:03:51 > 0:03:55So head south and you'll find the best property
0:03:55 > 0:03:59bargains and a quieter, more rural way of life.
0:03:59 > 0:04:02So what area is going to be right for today's buyers?
0:04:02 > 0:04:04Well, let's meet them and find out.
0:04:04 > 0:04:07Today's house hunters are Claire, John
0:04:07 > 0:04:09and their 11-year-old son, Harry.
0:04:09 > 0:04:11Claire is an NHS occupational therapist
0:04:11 > 0:04:13and John works for a building company.
0:04:13 > 0:04:16They met over 13 years ago.
0:04:16 > 0:04:21- We met through our friend Justine, didn't we?- Yeah, we sort of...
0:04:21 > 0:04:25- We was in a bar, weren't we?- A bar, yeah. And we went out for a drink.
0:04:25 > 0:04:30- And that's it.- That was it.- One year and one day later we got married.
0:04:30 > 0:04:32They had Harry, who is now 11.
0:04:32 > 0:04:35And they all currently live in Buckinghamshire,
0:04:35 > 0:04:37in an unusual house.
0:04:37 > 0:04:40When you look at it from the outside, it looks very, very small.
0:04:40 > 0:04:44As you walk through the front door and actually come into the house,
0:04:44 > 0:04:47it is a little TARDIS, or should I say a large TARDIS,
0:04:47 > 0:04:51spread over three floors. But there is somewhere better for us.
0:04:51 > 0:04:54And hopefully, that will be Malta.
0:04:54 > 0:04:58The idea of Malta as a place to move to came about after many
0:04:58 > 0:05:00happy holidays on the island.
0:05:02 > 0:05:04From the moment I first went to Malta six years ago,
0:05:04 > 0:05:08I just completely fell in love with the culture, the history,
0:05:08 > 0:05:11the people that live there.
0:05:11 > 0:05:14You get nine months of sun. You know, the beaches.
0:05:14 > 0:05:17The activities and sports for Harry.
0:05:17 > 0:05:20And just the way... Family-orientated, they all are.
0:05:20 > 0:05:23Yeah, just love it. Just love it there.
0:05:23 > 0:05:25Millie, the dog, will be part of the move,
0:05:25 > 0:05:29but Claire has two grown-up children who will be staying in the UK.
0:05:29 > 0:05:32Unfortunately, George and Leah, our two older children, won't be
0:05:32 > 0:05:35able to join us at the moment, with the commitments of work.
0:05:35 > 0:05:37So that is going to be a real shock to the system,
0:05:37 > 0:05:39not seeing them every day.
0:05:39 > 0:05:42But they are really supportive, aren't they, George and Leah?
0:05:42 > 0:05:44They're really supportive of us going,
0:05:44 > 0:05:46which has made it a bit easier.
0:05:46 > 0:05:49As Harry is 11 years old, the move involves not only finding
0:05:49 > 0:05:52a property but also a good school for him to attend.
0:05:52 > 0:05:57I think the only concern I have for Harry is probably schooling.
0:05:57 > 0:06:00Just making sure that he is settled, that he is making friends
0:06:00 > 0:06:03and getting the good education that he deserves.
0:06:03 > 0:06:08I'm looking forward to moving to Malta because I can see my dad
0:06:08 > 0:06:13more and we get to play together and we get to spend more time together.
0:06:13 > 0:06:15I'm a better footballer than my dad
0:06:15 > 0:06:18because I can do better skills than him.
0:06:18 > 0:06:20And he is a better keeper than me.
0:06:21 > 0:06:24With the sale of the UK home, John and Claire would have a
0:06:24 > 0:06:28cushion of capital to tide them over until they find what work they can.
0:06:28 > 0:06:31For John, a fundamental change in work life is
0:06:31 > 0:06:33one of the driving factors.
0:06:33 > 0:06:36You know, I don't want the rat race I have now -
0:06:36 > 0:06:39getting up at 5.00 in the morning to be in the office by 7.00.
0:06:39 > 0:06:44You know, I've been doing this for so long, I just feel it is time.
0:06:44 > 0:06:46I've got people that I've met
0:06:46 > 0:06:50and people that I know that have said that they have contacts over there.
0:06:50 > 0:06:53Push comes to shove, I'll work behind the bar.
0:06:53 > 0:06:57Harry has already sat an entrance exam for a school on the island,
0:06:57 > 0:07:00and they are expecting the results soon.
0:07:00 > 0:07:03Harry, going to senior school, it's that step up.
0:07:03 > 0:07:06We had an offer on the house yesterday, I've accepted it.
0:07:06 > 0:07:09If there has ever been a right time, it is now.
0:07:09 > 0:07:12Yeah, well, my contract at work is also coming to an end.
0:07:12 > 0:07:15- It just seems to be all falling into place.- Yeah.
0:07:15 > 0:07:18Better to regret something you have done than something you haven't.
0:07:18 > 0:07:19Exactly.
0:07:19 > 0:07:22Indeed. And I don't think this will be a regret.
0:07:25 > 0:07:28Claire and John have only ever holidayed in Mellieha,
0:07:28 > 0:07:29in the north of the island.
0:07:29 > 0:07:33And this is where the school they applied to for Harry is situated.
0:07:33 > 0:07:35But as Malta is so small,
0:07:35 > 0:07:38they want to explore all options across the country.
0:07:38 > 0:07:41So they are flexible about location, but what about the property itself?
0:07:41 > 0:07:45With Harry being looked after by his elder sister in the UK, I am meeting
0:07:45 > 0:07:48Claire and John near Valletta, to hear more about their plans.
0:07:48 > 0:07:52Well, John and Claire, here we are in wonderful Malta.
0:07:52 > 0:07:55In a way, I suppose, this feels like a second home to the two of you.
0:07:55 > 0:07:58Absolutely, yeah. We have been coming here for...six years now?
0:07:58 > 0:08:00- Yeah, six years. - Six years we have been coming.
0:08:00 > 0:08:05- So, as an island, it has really won you over.- Yes, absolutely.
0:08:05 > 0:08:07From the first year we came here, wasn't it?
0:08:07 > 0:08:10- So, yes.- What is the situation at home in the UK?
0:08:10 > 0:08:12The house is sold
0:08:12 > 0:08:16and we hopefully need to be out of there in four weeks.
0:08:16 > 0:08:19- So time really is of the essence. - Yes, absolutely, exactly.
0:08:19 > 0:08:23So no pressure to find us a home.
0:08:23 > 0:08:27So if we find you that perfect property that matches everything
0:08:27 > 0:08:31that you and your son Harry wants, you're going to move straightaway?
0:08:31 > 0:08:33Absolutely, we have to, yes. This is it.
0:08:33 > 0:08:37My goodness. At the moment, you live in a property with
0:08:37 > 0:08:40fields in the background, you've got a lovely garden...
0:08:40 > 0:08:42I mean, have you thought what it is going to be like
0:08:42 > 0:08:43when you move to Malta?
0:08:43 > 0:08:47Because we are standing on an island that is very heavily populated.
0:08:47 > 0:08:49- BOTH:- Yes.
0:08:49 > 0:08:54Yes, there is, but there are pockets that you can find that are quiet.
0:08:54 > 0:08:58- We just want to be here.- We are open to options, as they say.- Are you?
0:08:58 > 0:09:01- Yes.- Do you think you are both quite flexible as a couple?
0:09:01 > 0:09:05- Yes, definitely.- Yeah, we agree on most things.
0:09:05 > 0:09:09MENACINGLY: Don't we? THEY LAUGH
0:09:09 > 0:09:13So what type of property then, ideally, are you looking for?
0:09:13 > 0:09:17- I like a house with character, two to three bedrooms.- Yep.
0:09:17 > 0:09:21Possibly a nice courtyard. A rooftop.
0:09:21 > 0:09:24And then we are open to anything.
0:09:24 > 0:09:29Also, you can get lovely penthouses where you can get on the roofs
0:09:29 > 0:09:31and have your barbecue on the roof.
0:09:31 > 0:09:34You know, in the summer... Well, you could have one today, actually.
0:09:34 > 0:09:37You could, actually. I know, it's pretty warm today, isn't it?
0:09:37 > 0:09:41- So why don't you remind us of your budget?- We have...
0:09:41 > 0:09:44£200,000 plus your taxes.
0:09:44 > 0:09:47Nervous about coming out?
0:09:47 > 0:09:50- No, excited.- Are you? - And I want to do it. Let's do it.
0:09:50 > 0:09:54We do have some splendid properties to show you. Ready to get going?
0:09:54 > 0:09:56- Yes, absolutely.- We are indeed. - Come on then.
0:10:19 > 0:10:22And we have picked out four properties, each of which
0:10:22 > 0:10:26offer something distinct while remaining typically Maltese.
0:10:26 > 0:10:29I'll be keeping the price tag of each secret till
0:10:29 > 0:10:31the end of the house tours.
0:10:31 > 0:10:33Our final offering will be a mystery house,
0:10:33 > 0:10:37which today offers something of a millionaire lifestyle.
0:10:37 > 0:10:41Claire and John may have been here six years on the trot on holiday,
0:10:41 > 0:10:44but we'll immerse them in Maltese day-to-day life
0:10:44 > 0:10:48to find out if this really is the place to begin a new life.
0:10:56 > 0:10:59To kick off our Maltese house hunt, we are heading to Rabat,
0:10:59 > 0:11:02a small town in the centre of the island.
0:11:02 > 0:11:06It sprang up as a suburb to the ancient walled city of Mdina,
0:11:06 > 0:11:08which was once the capital of Malta.
0:11:08 > 0:11:12Outside the confines of the walls, Rabat is now much bigger than
0:11:12 > 0:11:16the citadel and has a population of around 12,000.
0:11:16 > 0:11:19There are historic sites to visit such as the Roman Villa,
0:11:19 > 0:11:21now a museum of antiquities,
0:11:21 > 0:11:26the 17th century St Paul's church and the Roman catacombs.
0:11:26 > 0:11:29Rabat's narrow stone streets are filled with typical Maltese
0:11:29 > 0:11:32houses, with their characteristic wooden balconies.
0:11:32 > 0:11:36But it is also a modern place to live with all the conveniences.
0:11:36 > 0:11:40We are sticking to the atmospheric alleyways for our first
0:11:40 > 0:11:44Maltese offering. Just coming up here is our first house.
0:11:44 > 0:11:47Fantastic, can't wait to see it.
0:11:47 > 0:11:49If you look from the front, there is a plaque right at the top.
0:11:49 > 0:11:52It was built in 1614.
0:11:52 > 0:11:54Wow, that is amazing.
0:11:54 > 0:11:58It is believed a rich family had it built for the local priest.
0:11:58 > 0:12:00But obviously, since then, it has been a shop,
0:12:00 > 0:12:02it has been part of the local community.
0:12:02 > 0:12:04For being 400 years old,
0:12:04 > 0:12:09- it certainly has a lot of character and charm.- I can imagine. Fantastic.
0:12:09 > 0:12:13- I can't wait to see inside. - Let's see if you are won over.- OK.
0:12:13 > 0:12:16This historic property is what the Maltese refer
0:12:16 > 0:12:18to as a house of character.
0:12:18 > 0:12:22Spread vertically over four levels, this traditional town house
0:12:22 > 0:12:25has been lovingly restored, keeping many original features.
0:12:25 > 0:12:28And on the ground floor, is the living room.
0:12:28 > 0:12:31- Wow, this is amazing.- Wow. - This is lovely.- Very medieval.
0:12:31 > 0:12:35- It is unusual, isn't it? - Yeah, it is really.- It is.
0:12:35 > 0:12:38- Yeah.- Very impressive. - Exactly what I wanted.- Is it?- Yes.
0:12:38 > 0:12:40Exactly what I wanted, so...
0:12:40 > 0:12:41This is Maltese limestone,
0:12:41 > 0:12:44- which, as you know, is everywhere around the island.- Oh, yeah.
0:12:44 > 0:12:48It's like stepping... Well, it is stepping back in time, isn't it?
0:12:48 > 0:12:51- You can imagine how many people have come through that door.- Yeah.
0:12:51 > 0:12:54- Yeah, amazing.- 400 years ago. - Absolutely.
0:12:54 > 0:12:57- Yeah, impressed.- Very impressed. - Yeah?
0:12:57 > 0:13:01A strong start. Let's continue.
0:13:02 > 0:13:04Across the living room to the back of the house is
0:13:04 > 0:13:09a kitchen that might not be the kind of family space Claire had in mind.
0:13:09 > 0:13:13- Now, you do have to mind your head slightly as you walk through.- OK.
0:13:13 > 0:13:15- Oh, wow.- Into our kitchen.
0:13:15 > 0:13:19- Probably not the largest kitchen in the world.- No.
0:13:19 > 0:13:22But everything you need here.
0:13:22 > 0:13:24Yeah. It's nice. I like it. It's cute.
0:13:24 > 0:13:26It was actually fitted out not that long ago,
0:13:26 > 0:13:29and I think it has been very cleverly designed.
0:13:29 > 0:13:31You know, you've got the granite work surfaces,
0:13:31 > 0:13:34and they are not the full width, they are half the width
0:13:34 > 0:13:36so that you do have a little bit more space.
0:13:36 > 0:13:40We are going to head upstairs now, so mind your head going out.
0:13:40 > 0:13:42John, if you want to lead the way, thank you.
0:13:45 > 0:13:47To allow for such a compact kitchen, there is
0:13:47 > 0:13:50a separate utility room at the top of the house.
0:13:50 > 0:13:53And through the kitchen window is a small courtyard.
0:13:55 > 0:13:58Down in the basement is the third bedroom.
0:13:58 > 0:14:01Once the cellar, this vaulted room is now a very generous double.
0:14:03 > 0:14:06Up from the ground floor, on a half landing,
0:14:06 > 0:14:09is a high-spec wet room put in five years ago
0:14:09 > 0:14:12which serves the main bedroom that is just up a couple more steps.
0:14:17 > 0:14:20- Oh, this is nice.- Like being in the Tower of London, isn't it?
0:14:20 > 0:14:21- Come on in.- Oh, this is lovely.
0:14:21 > 0:14:24- What did you just say, the Tower of London?- Something like that, yeah.
0:14:24 > 0:14:26Going back in time, so to speak.
0:14:26 > 0:14:29If you don't buy this house, I'm going to chop off your head,
0:14:29 > 0:14:30how is that as a deal?
0:14:30 > 0:14:33I mean, it is stepping back in time. You are absolutely right.
0:14:33 > 0:14:36And the way it's been so lovingly restored,
0:14:36 > 0:14:38you get that character, that charm.
0:14:38 > 0:14:42- It hasn't been stripped bare, it has been enhanced.- Absolutely.
0:14:42 > 0:14:46- So this town house has three bedrooms.- Brilliant, fantastic.
0:14:46 > 0:14:49All of them good sized. Now, how often can I say this?
0:14:49 > 0:14:54- I can offer you also a birthing room.- A birthing room?- Yes.
0:14:54 > 0:14:55A birthing room.
0:14:55 > 0:14:58The ladies, apparently, used to come to the top of the house,
0:14:58 > 0:14:59where it is cooler.
0:14:59 > 0:15:01It has now been turned into a music room,
0:15:01 > 0:15:04- but that is what was originally used for.- Oh, right!
0:15:04 > 0:15:07So it could be lovely for Harry as a separate little study area.
0:15:07 > 0:15:11- Yeah, definitely, yeah. - Very interesting.
0:15:11 > 0:15:14Take a look behind those doors, see what you think.
0:15:14 > 0:15:15OK.
0:15:17 > 0:15:21- Oh, wow! This is amazing!- Oh, yeah.
0:15:21 > 0:15:23- So unexpected.- Very different.
0:15:23 > 0:15:25- This is brilliant.- Yeah, very nice.
0:15:25 > 0:15:27- Yeah. I love it.- Yeah.
0:15:27 > 0:15:30You could, if you wanted to, make it an en-suite.
0:15:30 > 0:15:35- Yeah.- Or you can have it as another room which is part of yours.
0:15:35 > 0:15:36No, I like it as it is.
0:15:36 > 0:15:39- So I take it, Claire, you are not going to change it, no?- No.
0:15:39 > 0:15:41- Walk-in wardrobe?- Absolutely.
0:15:41 > 0:15:45- You haven't even got a look in, have you, John?- I never do.- No.
0:15:45 > 0:15:49- Right, we are going to keep on heading up.- OK.
0:15:49 > 0:15:52Coming from a three-storey house in the UK, the stairs,
0:15:52 > 0:15:55thankfully, aren't proving an issue.
0:15:55 > 0:15:57Now, mind your head here, Claire.
0:15:57 > 0:16:01We are continuing up to the top floor.
0:16:01 > 0:16:04Now, I think this is a climb worth making because...
0:16:05 > 0:16:08you have your own roof terrace.
0:16:08 > 0:16:10Wow, this is lovely.
0:16:10 > 0:16:15- Can you imagine sitting out here, glass of wine in the evening?- Yeah.
0:16:15 > 0:16:19- Barbecue going on.- Yes, I do like a barbie.- Relaxing...
0:16:19 > 0:16:22So what do you think? You haven't looked at any houses
0:16:22 > 0:16:24here, it is only our first property.
0:16:24 > 0:16:27- How close are we getting to what you want?- Very close.
0:16:27 > 0:16:30Yeah, Johnny needs to get his chequebook out. I love this house.
0:16:30 > 0:16:33- It's lovely.- Well, let's see if you can afford it, then.
0:16:33 > 0:16:37You have got to work out how much you think it is on the market for.
0:16:37 > 0:16:41OK. I think...I think about 170.
0:16:41 > 0:16:45- Yeah, 170, 180.- Go on, John, give me a figure.
0:16:45 > 0:16:48- Which one?- 180.
0:16:48 > 0:16:51You should have gone with 170 because you are the closest.
0:16:51 > 0:16:56- It is a tad over £170,000.- Really?
0:16:57 > 0:16:59- Fantastic.- OK.
0:16:59 > 0:17:03So I think it is time for you two to explore on your own.
0:17:03 > 0:17:05Don't forget the third bedroom down in the basement.
0:17:05 > 0:17:08Take your time, I'll catch up with you when you're ready.
0:17:08 > 0:17:10- Lovely, thank you. - Thank you.- Come on, then.
0:17:27 > 0:17:30..and centuries of history in its walls.
0:17:30 > 0:17:31- Mind your head, Johnny.- Yeah.
0:17:33 > 0:17:36Oh, this is lovely!
0:17:36 > 0:17:40- This is really nice. You reckon this is Harry's room?- Yeah.
0:17:40 > 0:17:42What's behind...?
0:17:42 > 0:17:45Oh, look, you have got a little shower room. That's amazing.
0:17:45 > 0:17:48- Harry would love this.- Yeah.
0:17:48 > 0:17:52- He'd have his little den, so to speak.- Yeah, absolutely.
0:17:52 > 0:17:57I think of that house... I think it is absolutely lovely.
0:17:57 > 0:17:59Everything we're looking for, really.
0:17:59 > 0:18:02Yeah, I like that a lot as well. It is a beautiful place.
0:18:02 > 0:18:06You know, the only fault I can see is going into the kitchen,
0:18:06 > 0:18:08you know, having to duck your head every time.
0:18:08 > 0:18:10But, you know, if you want something like this,
0:18:10 > 0:18:13- I suppose you have got to... - Adjust to it.- Adjust, yeah.
0:18:13 > 0:18:16It's 400 years of history. And it is beautiful.
0:18:16 > 0:18:20It is a very, very good start. You know, you couldn't have...
0:18:20 > 0:18:23Maybe you should have saved this one till last.
0:18:23 > 0:18:25THEY LAUGH
0:18:28 > 0:18:32- Hello.- Hello.- So, first experience of Maltese homes.
0:18:32 > 0:18:35- Good? Thumbs-up? - Very impressed, yes.- Loved it.
0:18:35 > 0:18:38You did seem to really, really warm to it as we were going around.
0:18:38 > 0:18:40- Yeah.- Definitely.
0:18:40 > 0:18:42We have got more to show you, but first, we are
0:18:42 > 0:18:44going to do something a little bit different.
0:18:44 > 0:18:46Rather than take you back to the hotel...
0:18:46 > 0:18:47We've got your bags in the car
0:18:47 > 0:18:49because we got you a rental for the week.
0:18:49 > 0:18:51- Wow.- OK.
0:18:51 > 0:18:52Somewhere quite interesting.
0:18:52 > 0:18:54- Somewhere very stunning.- Lovely.
0:18:54 > 0:18:57- Shall we go and take a look? - Absolutely.- Come on, then.
0:19:04 > 0:19:08Claire and John have holidayed in the resort towns of the island,
0:19:08 > 0:19:11but to give them a more authentic Maltese experience,
0:19:11 > 0:19:15we found them a place to stay in the ancient walled city of Mdina.
0:19:16 > 0:19:18So it has taken us what,
0:19:18 > 0:19:20- five minutes to get from Rabat to here, in Mdina?- Yes.
0:19:20 > 0:19:22And we're right in the heart of the city
0:19:22 > 0:19:25because this is going to be your house for the week.
0:19:25 > 0:19:27- How exciting.- Lovely.
0:19:27 > 0:19:31- So let me give you the keys.- Thank you.- Enjoy yourselves.- Will do.
0:19:31 > 0:19:35- I'll be back tomorrow to show you some more properties.- Brilliant.
0:19:35 > 0:19:39- But now the time is your own. Enjoy. - Thank you.- Thank you. Bye-bye.
0:19:51 > 0:19:55- Let's see if there is a roof terrace.- Good idea.
0:19:58 > 0:20:00Look at this.
0:20:00 > 0:20:03SHE CHUCKLES INCREDULOUSLY Yeah, this is lovely, eh?
0:20:06 > 0:20:09The medieval town of Mdina has plenty of winding streets and
0:20:09 > 0:20:14historic sites to explore, but it is also home to many souvenir shops.
0:20:14 > 0:20:15To round off their day,
0:20:15 > 0:20:19Claire and John go in search of a present to take back for Harry.
0:20:25 > 0:20:27- These are really nice. - Yeah, they are.
0:20:27 > 0:20:29Harry would love these.
0:20:29 > 0:20:32- What do you reckon, this one?- Yeah.
0:20:32 > 0:20:36- I think so.- Yeah?- Definitely. - OK, let's get that one.- Yeah.
0:20:36 > 0:20:37- Yeah, definitely.- Come on.
0:20:46 > 0:20:49It is the start of our second day house hunting with Claire
0:20:49 > 0:20:53and John from Buckinghamshire on the Mediterranean island of Malta, where
0:20:53 > 0:20:58they are seeking a less hectic pace of life whilst continuing to work.
0:20:58 > 0:21:01Malta does enjoy a lower cost of living than the UK, but
0:21:01 > 0:21:03salaries here are also less,
0:21:03 > 0:21:06with the average being around £17,000 a year.
0:21:08 > 0:21:12Well, we've had a great start here in Malta with John and Claire.
0:21:12 > 0:21:16And yesterday, our first property, they absolutely adored it.
0:21:16 > 0:21:18Well, we gave them the night off last night.
0:21:18 > 0:21:20They've had some time to think and to talk about it.
0:21:20 > 0:21:23Let's see what they've got to say this morning.
0:21:26 > 0:21:29- Good morning, sir!- Good morning. - How are you? Did you sleep well?
0:21:29 > 0:21:31Very well, thank you.
0:21:31 > 0:21:34I am hoping I have timed this right for a little spot of breakfast.
0:21:34 > 0:21:36Yeah, come on in, we were having it on the rooftop.
0:21:36 > 0:21:38Sounds divine.
0:21:42 > 0:21:46- Oh, my word!- Take a seat. - It is beautiful up here!
0:21:46 > 0:21:49- This is the perfect place to have breakfast.- Oh, yes.
0:21:49 > 0:21:53- It's not even the summer and it is so warm.- It's lovely.
0:21:53 > 0:21:55So you had last night on your own, time to reflect,
0:21:55 > 0:21:57time to have a think. Did you venture out?
0:21:57 > 0:22:01Yeah, we popped out for a little walk round Mdina.
0:22:01 > 0:22:03Yeah, it was really lovely last night.
0:22:03 > 0:22:06Does it feel different as an experience that you are actually
0:22:06 > 0:22:11here, looking for your future home rather than you are here on holiday?
0:22:11 > 0:22:14- Yeah, it does feel different. - Does it?- Totally.
0:22:14 > 0:22:18You know, because you know that this is a really big step in your life.
0:22:18 > 0:22:21And, you know, you only get one chance at something like this,
0:22:21 > 0:22:23- and you have got to grab it with both hands.- Yeah.
0:22:23 > 0:22:27And it is not about going out, getting drunk and coming back
0:22:27 > 0:22:30and getting up and then going on the beach kind of thing.
0:22:30 > 0:22:31It's like working, really.
0:22:31 > 0:22:34It is the reality, isn't it? It's kicking in.
0:22:34 > 0:22:36Good news is we have got more to show you today.
0:22:36 > 0:22:39- So shall we have a breakfast on the hoof, so to speak?- Yes.- Yes, great.
0:22:39 > 0:22:42Let's go. I'm going to take the strawberry one, what do you reckon?
0:22:42 > 0:22:43And me, and me.
0:22:45 > 0:22:46Ladies...
0:22:54 > 0:22:57For our next property, we are heading to the town of Sliema
0:22:57 > 0:22:59on the eastern coast of Malta,
0:22:59 > 0:23:02just across the water from the capital, Valletta.
0:23:02 > 0:23:05Sliema began life as a fishing village, but it is now
0:23:05 > 0:23:10arguably the island's main coastal resort and residential area.
0:23:11 > 0:23:14Here, historic buildings rub shoulders with modern
0:23:14 > 0:23:16apartment blocks.
0:23:16 > 0:23:19It is a cosmopolitan place with many upmarket restaurants
0:23:19 > 0:23:24and boutiques serving the growing population of 15,000.
0:23:25 > 0:23:27The British influence is evident,
0:23:27 > 0:23:29and it is where many expats settle.
0:23:29 > 0:23:33But will it be where Claire and John want to settle?
0:23:33 > 0:23:36The house I want to show them next is down the narrow inland
0:23:36 > 0:23:39streets of the historic part of the town.
0:23:39 > 0:23:41So...
0:23:41 > 0:23:44- Time for our next poverty.- Wow.- Wow.
0:23:44 > 0:23:48- That looks really good. - Very Maltese.- Yeah?
0:23:48 > 0:23:52- Because that is what you are after in a way, isn't it?- BOTH:- Oh, yes.
0:23:52 > 0:23:55One thing I want to point out before we step inside is
0:23:55 > 0:23:58- the religious statue.- Yeah.
0:23:58 > 0:24:02It comes with the house. It is actually protected.
0:24:02 > 0:24:04- Oh, that is brilliant.- Yeah, that's fair enough.- That's good.
0:24:04 > 0:24:07- Shall we step inside? - Yeah, let's do it.
0:24:07 > 0:24:11This three-storey town house was built for a wealthy town dweller
0:24:11 > 0:24:15100 years ago and has the traditional Maltese balcony.
0:24:15 > 0:24:20Inside, it has got plenty of original character, too.
0:24:20 > 0:24:23So... The door opens straight into the living room.
0:24:23 > 0:24:27- Oh, this is nice.- You can probably see, thick walls straightaway.
0:24:27 > 0:24:32- Maltese limestone.- It's nice, I like it.- Yeah. Very impressed again.
0:24:32 > 0:24:33- I like the beams.- Yeah.
0:24:33 > 0:24:36You certainly get a sense of space with this property.
0:24:36 > 0:24:40We are going to walk straight through, into the kitchen.
0:24:40 > 0:24:43So just there, you have got a small study,
0:24:43 > 0:24:46- perfect for when Harry decides he wants to do his homework.- Yes.
0:24:46 > 0:24:50- Leads us into this.- Oh, yeah, this is more like it.- Yeah.
0:24:50 > 0:24:52This is a bit of us, definitely.
0:24:52 > 0:24:53Very happy.
0:24:53 > 0:24:57- Are you happy?- I am happy.
0:24:57 > 0:25:01- This is what you call a kitchen.- Yes. - Or kitchen/diner, so to speak.- Yeah.
0:25:01 > 0:25:04No, this is more like it. This is what I was looking for.
0:25:04 > 0:25:07Move around a bit more freely, can't you? In something like this.
0:25:07 > 0:25:11- It's lovely.- I take it that's a courtyard through there, is it?
0:25:11 > 0:25:13It is. You have got your own courtyard.
0:25:13 > 0:25:17- They really are hidden gems, these properties.- Oh, indeed.
0:25:18 > 0:25:21The staircase of this property is a pretty spectacular feature
0:25:21 > 0:25:24and forms a spine up the centre of the house.
0:25:24 > 0:25:26On this first floor, there is a bedroom to the front
0:25:26 > 0:25:29of the property, with a traditional wooden balcony
0:25:29 > 0:25:30overlooking the street.
0:25:30 > 0:25:33But we are inspecting the bedroom at the rear.
0:25:33 > 0:25:37So very ornate staircase, it's the original.
0:25:37 > 0:25:39- And this would be your master bedroom.- This is lovely.
0:25:39 > 0:25:42- Yeah, it's very big. - With your own en suite.
0:25:42 > 0:25:44- Yeah, we don't have that at home, do we?- No, we don't.
0:25:44 > 0:25:48- So that is a nice bonus. Is that about a balcony?- It is, yeah.
0:25:48 > 0:25:50You have your own balcony.
0:25:50 > 0:25:52- You can't get better than that. - You are keen, aren't you, John?
0:25:52 > 0:25:56- That is lovely.- Go on, then. Have a little peak.- Yeah? Do you mind?- No.
0:25:56 > 0:25:58No...
0:25:59 > 0:26:02- Ha! This is amazing! - Yeah, it's really good.
0:26:02 > 0:26:05- Oh, this is very different. - Look at that sun!
0:26:05 > 0:26:08I can see us with a little cafe latte, a little espresso.
0:26:08 > 0:26:11- An espresso in the morning, yeah. Absolutely.- Croissants.
0:26:11 > 0:26:12It's just beautiful.
0:26:12 > 0:26:14Another flight of stairs -
0:26:14 > 0:26:16you're going to be fit when you move out here -
0:26:16 > 0:26:19- to the very top of the house.- OK.
0:26:19 > 0:26:23Up on the second floor is a further enormous bedroom.
0:26:23 > 0:26:26And up from here is access to the roof.
0:26:27 > 0:26:29You've got all this lovely space.
0:26:29 > 0:26:33- You've also got a washroom in there, which is quite handy.- OK.- Lovely.
0:26:33 > 0:26:36This washroom serves the top-floor bedroom
0:26:36 > 0:26:39and, like most Maltese town houses, is where you will find the washing
0:26:39 > 0:26:43machine, as it's on the roof where the washing tends to be hung.
0:26:46 > 0:26:49See, I think, in a way, we saved the best till last,
0:26:49 > 0:26:52- because I can't get enough of these roof terraces.- No.
0:26:52 > 0:26:54This is lovely. I really could see us here.
0:26:54 > 0:26:56I think so, yeah.
0:26:56 > 0:26:59- So what is the last thing we have to do?- Price.
0:26:59 > 0:27:01- So what are you thinking? - I am thinking...
0:27:01 > 0:27:04I am hoping 195.
0:27:04 > 0:27:05OK.
0:27:05 > 0:27:09I am thinking you have really thrown a curveball at me here,
0:27:09 > 0:27:13so I think this one might be over budget.
0:27:13 > 0:27:15225?
0:27:15 > 0:27:18Your wife is very good at this,
0:27:18 > 0:27:23- cos it is just under £196,000. - SHE LAUGHS
0:27:23 > 0:27:26Just under. So you are actually about £600 out, that's all.
0:27:26 > 0:27:30- Wow.- Under budget.- Yeah.- Yeah. - You got excited yesterday.
0:27:30 > 0:27:34In all honesty, how do you feel now, now that you know that price?
0:27:34 > 0:27:37You know, I was just praying that it would be under budget.
0:27:37 > 0:27:40- So I am well happy.- Do take another look.- Yeah, we will do.
0:27:40 > 0:27:43- Take a look at those other bedrooms that you haven't seen as yet.- OK.
0:27:43 > 0:27:46- And I'm going to meet you right at the bottom.- All right.- Off you go.
0:27:46 > 0:27:48- Wonderful. Thank you very much.- Bye-bye.
0:27:50 > 0:27:52I can't stop smiling
0:27:52 > 0:27:54cos they've loved both of our properties.
0:27:54 > 0:27:59But in my heart of hearts, I truly believe this gives them
0:27:59 > 0:28:02everything as a family that they're looking for.
0:28:19 > 0:28:24I love this house. Big wow factor for me is definitely the rooftop.
0:28:24 > 0:28:27And also, I like the little terrace that we've got in our main bedroom.
0:28:27 > 0:28:30Oh, yeah! Yes, of the master bedroom. Yes.
0:28:30 > 0:28:32- It's lovely as well. - Yeah, I didn't expect that.
0:28:32 > 0:28:35Will you make me coffee every morning, Johnny?
0:28:35 > 0:28:36Yeah, that's it, yeah.
0:28:40 > 0:28:45- So two house tours done.- Yep.- Two great reactions.- Yes.- Smiling faces.
0:28:45 > 0:28:49- Positivity. I'm loving Malta. - I know, so are we.
0:28:49 > 0:28:52- We are.- We're getting close to finding you a home, I think.
0:28:52 > 0:28:54- You are.- I think so.- Good.
0:29:02 > 0:29:05Due to the UK's historic ties with Malta,
0:29:05 > 0:29:08it has long been an easy place for Brits to move to.
0:29:08 > 0:29:11Whilst the Maltese language, which is related to Arabic,
0:29:11 > 0:29:15may be unfamiliar, their other official language is English.
0:29:15 > 0:29:16They drive on the left,
0:29:16 > 0:29:19and there are familiar touches of home everywhere.
0:29:19 > 0:29:23Today, around 8,000 expats live in Malta.
0:29:23 > 0:29:27But starting a new life anywhere can be nerve-racking, especially
0:29:27 > 0:29:29if you have a child's education to consider.
0:29:29 > 0:29:33I've arranged a harbour cruise with a family who might be able
0:29:33 > 0:29:36to offer some words of advice. Can I introduce you?
0:29:36 > 0:29:38We've got John, Julie and Kirstie. They have been here...
0:29:38 > 0:29:41- How many years, Julie? - Eight years.- Eight years.
0:29:41 > 0:29:44Obviously been a success cos you're still here, aren't you?
0:29:44 > 0:29:45You've got a young family.
0:29:45 > 0:29:47You've got Harry that you want to bring out.
0:29:47 > 0:29:50They've actually experienced it with their three children.
0:29:50 > 0:29:53It's hard to believe now because Kirstie is a teacher here.
0:29:53 > 0:29:55Yes, yes, I am.
0:29:55 > 0:29:58So I thought it might be quite nice... We've organized for you to
0:29:58 > 0:30:01get out on a luzzu today. You can have a chat amongst yourselves.
0:30:01 > 0:30:02I will leave you to it.
0:30:02 > 0:30:04Get on board and I will catch you when you come off.
0:30:04 > 0:30:07- Enjoy. Ask loads of questions. - Will do.
0:30:07 > 0:30:10John, who works in finance, was offered a job in Malta,
0:30:10 > 0:30:12and the family moved within two months,
0:30:12 > 0:30:15when the children were eight, 13 and 14.
0:30:15 > 0:30:17They know life here well
0:30:17 > 0:30:20and are taking John and Claire on a tour of the Grand Harbour.
0:30:20 > 0:30:22Julie works as an English language teacher.
0:30:22 > 0:30:25And daughter Kirstie is a primary school teacher.
0:30:25 > 0:30:29So they also know a thing or two about the Maltese education system.
0:30:29 > 0:30:32So, how is it emotionally with the children, bringing them over?
0:30:32 > 0:30:34How did it...? Did it affect them at all?
0:30:34 > 0:30:36We were a little bit worried about their reactions,
0:30:36 > 0:30:40but when we finally got here, I think everybody was very pleased.
0:30:40 > 0:30:42It was nerve-racking,
0:30:42 > 0:30:47but then settled very easily and it is a great social life out here.
0:30:47 > 0:30:52You are invited out straightaway to different things. It was wonderful.
0:30:52 > 0:30:55I didn't have any problems at all settling.
0:30:55 > 0:30:58So I think Harry, 11, he'll be absolutely fine, to be honest.
0:30:58 > 0:31:02Yeah. And what was the school system like? Was it different from England?
0:31:02 > 0:31:05The school system is different here. They do proper O-levels.
0:31:05 > 0:31:07It is quite exam-orientated.
0:31:07 > 0:31:12It's a bit more what we would call a traditional school.
0:31:12 > 0:31:14It is back to basics.
0:31:14 > 0:31:19- Yeah, they do seem as if they really push them hard, don't they?- Yeah.
0:31:19 > 0:31:22Yeah. It was definitely a challenge.
0:31:22 > 0:31:25- We are coming into the harbour, and on that side, is Birgu.- Birgu.
0:31:25 > 0:31:31Or Vittoriosa. And there is a really nice set of pubs and bars
0:31:31 > 0:31:34and restaurants just behind all the boats you can see in front of us.
0:31:34 > 0:31:37It is one of the loveliest places to come to visit.
0:31:37 > 0:31:41And some of the largest boats that visit the island dock here.
0:31:41 > 0:31:45- That is so lovely.- So you can see some real palaces here.
0:31:48 > 0:31:52Getting Harry a good education is of the utmost importance,
0:31:52 > 0:31:55but so too is finding work on the island.
0:31:55 > 0:31:58I'm meeting them back on terra firma to discuss
0:31:58 > 0:32:01the realities of living and working in Malta.
0:32:02 > 0:32:04I suppose, in a way, it is a good time to get down
0:32:04 > 0:32:06to the nitty-gritty, isn't it?
0:32:06 > 0:32:09The practicalities of actually moving and work.
0:32:09 > 0:32:11- BOTH: Yes.- So what is employment like here in Malta?
0:32:11 > 0:32:13- Is it easy to find a job? - It should be.
0:32:13 > 0:32:16Because the unemployment rate in Malta has been measured at one
0:32:16 > 0:32:19of the lowest rates in the whole of the EU.
0:32:19 > 0:32:21You know, what is the Maltese work ethic out here?
0:32:21 > 0:32:24I think everybody here works quite hard.
0:32:24 > 0:32:26- Most people have got two or three jobs.- Really?!
0:32:26 > 0:32:29- They do extra things in the evenings sometimes as well.- Really?
0:32:29 > 0:32:32- Especially in the summer months. - Yeah.- When the tourists are here.
0:32:32 > 0:32:34That makes sense, yeah.
0:32:34 > 0:32:36Are you quite flexible with what you are going to do
0:32:36 > 0:32:38- when you move out here? - Yeah, I am flexible.
0:32:38 > 0:32:41You know, I may be in construction,
0:32:41 > 0:32:44because there is a hell of a lot of work going on here.
0:32:44 > 0:32:48You know, and I have been on the tours in the building industry.
0:32:48 > 0:32:50The only problem with that area is you'll probably have to
0:32:50 > 0:32:52- learn a little bit of Maltese. - Really?
0:32:52 > 0:32:56If you are in a work environment on a site or something,
0:32:56 > 0:32:59they will be calling out to each other in Maltese.
0:32:59 > 0:33:02You will be expected to understand what is going on at least.
0:33:02 > 0:33:03- Health and safety.- Yes.
0:33:03 > 0:33:06- Is it easy to learn?- No. No.
0:33:06 > 0:33:10- It is a really difficult language. - Now, we are sold on the lifestyle.
0:33:10 > 0:33:13But obviously there are going to be some negatives.
0:33:13 > 0:33:15The thing is, when you want to move to a country,
0:33:15 > 0:33:17you do have rose-tinted spectacles on.
0:33:17 > 0:33:19We're going to have to ask, aren't we?
0:33:19 > 0:33:21Any downside to living here?
0:33:21 > 0:33:23Yeah, you have to remember, this is a Mediterranean country,
0:33:23 > 0:33:25so things are a little bit laid-back.
0:33:25 > 0:33:31If you have anything that involves the government offices
0:33:31 > 0:33:34such as... When you first start work,
0:33:34 > 0:33:37you have to get your national insurance number.
0:33:37 > 0:33:41These things tend to take a little more time
0:33:41 > 0:33:43and patience. Patience is important.
0:33:43 > 0:33:46- Are you patient?- Yeah.
0:33:46 > 0:33:50One of the things you get when you're living here is an ID card.
0:33:50 > 0:33:54- OK.- And the ID card is your passport, really, to all the services,
0:33:54 > 0:33:56both government services and to banks.
0:33:56 > 0:33:59You'll need your ID card for everything.
0:33:59 > 0:34:02Even buying a washing machine, you will need your ID card.
0:34:02 > 0:34:04They will ask you for your ID number.
0:34:04 > 0:34:07- So it is very important that you get one.- OK.
0:34:07 > 0:34:11- That is worth knowing. - So memorise your ID number.- Yeah.
0:34:11 > 0:34:13So, Kirstie, have to ask,
0:34:13 > 0:34:16how easy do you think it is going to be for Claire to make friends here?
0:34:16 > 0:34:17I think it'll be just fine.
0:34:17 > 0:34:20Everyone is so nice and they are also laid-back.
0:34:20 > 0:34:22There is not the stress here.
0:34:22 > 0:34:25So, you know, go and join some like social clubs to start with
0:34:25 > 0:34:28and then take it from there, I think.
0:34:28 > 0:34:31- So are you more committed than ever to make the move?- Absolutely.- Yeah.
0:34:31 > 0:34:33Yeah, definitely.
0:34:33 > 0:34:34They are homeless.
0:34:34 > 0:34:37They sold their home in the UK.
0:34:37 > 0:34:40They look very relaxed underneath this stress,
0:34:40 > 0:34:42because they have nowhere to live.
0:34:42 > 0:34:45So we have got to find them the right property, haven't we?
0:34:45 > 0:34:48- Yes, absolutely. - Thank you all so much for your time.
0:34:48 > 0:34:51Invaluable help. Honestly, it's so great.
0:34:51 > 0:34:54- And, well, you might have some new neighbours soon.- ALL: Yes!
0:34:54 > 0:34:56Keep in touch.
0:34:56 > 0:34:58- Lovely, thank you.- ALL: Thank you.
0:34:59 > 0:35:03When John and Claire do make the move, to purchase a property,
0:35:03 > 0:35:06they'll need to budget for an extra 5% to 10% on top
0:35:06 > 0:35:10of the asking prize for fees and taxes such as stamp duty.
0:35:10 > 0:35:13If you are thinking of a move to Malta, it is worth knowing there are
0:35:13 > 0:35:17some tax reducing schemes offered by the government for EU nationals,
0:35:17 > 0:35:20retirees and high net-worth individuals.
0:35:20 > 0:35:24It is worth checking to see if you qualify for one of these categories.
0:35:24 > 0:35:27To get to and from Malta, there are regular flights
0:35:27 > 0:35:30but only a handful of direct operators.
0:35:30 > 0:35:32During peak months, it can get expensive,
0:35:32 > 0:35:36so it is worth working in advance if you are able.
0:35:40 > 0:35:43For our next offering, we are heading to the far north
0:35:43 > 0:35:47of the island to the popular tourist destination of Mellieha, the place
0:35:47 > 0:35:49John and Claire know best.
0:35:49 > 0:35:53It is a small hillside town overlooking Mellieha Bay,
0:35:53 > 0:35:57the largest beach on the island with 800 metres of golden sand.
0:35:57 > 0:36:01With such an expanse of easy access coastline, historically, this part
0:36:01 > 0:36:04of the island suffered countless raids from corsairs and pirates.
0:36:04 > 0:36:07So in 1649, the Knights of St John
0:36:07 > 0:36:12built the spectacular Red Tower to instil fear in the enemy
0:36:12 > 0:36:15and security in the local population.
0:36:15 > 0:36:18More recent military conflicts are also in evidence here, with
0:36:18 > 0:36:22a vast network of underground air raid shelters used during the severe
0:36:22 > 0:36:26Second World War bombardments, which are now open to the public.
0:36:26 > 0:36:30For the 9,000 inhabitants, there is a high street full of shops,
0:36:30 > 0:36:32restaurants and amenities.
0:36:32 > 0:36:34A minute's drive away, in a residential zone,
0:36:34 > 0:36:36is our next proposition.
0:36:36 > 0:36:39So we have travelled north of the island to Mellieha,
0:36:39 > 0:36:43- but I have got a feeling you know this area pretty well.- Yes, we do.
0:36:43 > 0:36:44How well?
0:36:44 > 0:36:47Well, this is the first place we came to when we came to Malta.
0:36:47 > 0:36:51And we have been coming ever since for six years now.
0:36:51 > 0:36:55Sold on the area straightaway.
0:36:55 > 0:36:57So let's see if you are sold on the property.
0:36:57 > 0:37:01- Very different from other properties.- Yep.- First impressions?
0:37:01 > 0:37:05Eh... Not too sure.
0:37:05 > 0:37:08- But we'll see.- We'll see. - The balcony is nice.- Yeah.
0:37:08 > 0:37:11Let's see what you make of the inside, for the third time.
0:37:11 > 0:37:15That's the first underwhelming reaction to the house hunt so far.
0:37:15 > 0:37:20Built 13 years ago, this property has a simple, modern exterior.
0:37:20 > 0:37:22But as we have been finding out,
0:37:22 > 0:37:26these Maltese homes often have more to them than first meets the eye.
0:37:26 > 0:37:27Here, there is a semi-basement,
0:37:27 > 0:37:30which contained a large three-car garage.
0:37:30 > 0:37:33And the entrance steps lead up to a raised ground floor, which is
0:37:33 > 0:37:35the main living area.
0:37:36 > 0:37:39- What are we thinking? A bit surprised?- Yeah.
0:37:39 > 0:37:42- Pleasantly surprised.- Yeah, pleasantly surprised, actually.
0:37:42 > 0:37:46- Yeah.- Because it is so bad outside. Oh, no.
0:37:46 > 0:37:49I wasn't sure what to expect inside, but it is really nice.
0:37:49 > 0:37:53- It is quite nice, yeah. - The kitchen behind us.- Right.
0:37:53 > 0:37:54A nice, modern kitchen.
0:37:54 > 0:37:57- The kitchen is a little bit different.- Yeah.
0:37:57 > 0:37:59Because again, that open-plan feel.
0:37:59 > 0:38:03- But it does work with the dining area there.- Yeah, I do like it.
0:38:03 > 0:38:07Just through there are two bedrooms and a large family bathroom,
0:38:07 > 0:38:10beautifully done. The owners actually do use those bedrooms,
0:38:10 > 0:38:12so really, they live on this one level.
0:38:12 > 0:38:16- OK.- There is a little bit more to show you.- OK.
0:38:19 > 0:38:23Off to the side of the living room is a marble staircase leading
0:38:23 > 0:38:26up to a large, currently unused bedroom suite.
0:38:27 > 0:38:32- This could be the most fabulous master bedroom.- Yeah.
0:38:32 > 0:38:35Because you have got an en-suite there.
0:38:35 > 0:38:38- This is a nice surprise.- Yeah.
0:38:38 > 0:38:42- Magnificent views.- Yeah. - And a balcony.- It's lovely.
0:38:42 > 0:38:45You do make things difficult, don't you?
0:38:47 > 0:38:49They're so deceiving, these properties.
0:38:49 > 0:38:52- You just can't tell anything from the outside.- Yeah.
0:38:52 > 0:38:55Well, let's step outside.
0:39:00 > 0:39:01So let's be honest,
0:39:01 > 0:39:04- you were underwhelmed at the front of the property.- Yeah.
0:39:04 > 0:39:07But you can't be underwhelmed with that view, can you?
0:39:07 > 0:39:08No, absolutely not.
0:39:08 > 0:39:11- Beautiful. It is, isn't it?- Follow me. One more thing to show you.
0:39:11 > 0:39:12- All right.- Great.
0:39:14 > 0:39:17Off the master bedroom is a smaller room which leaves out to
0:39:17 > 0:39:19a rear roof terrace.
0:39:20 > 0:39:25Now, out here, we have an additional balcony.
0:39:25 > 0:39:27Not quite the same views, granted.
0:39:27 > 0:39:28Right.
0:39:28 > 0:39:33But this is where you could actually extend this property
0:39:33 > 0:39:35and have another floor.
0:39:35 > 0:39:36We can go out the back?
0:39:36 > 0:39:40You could go out to here. That is your border. But you can also go up.
0:39:40 > 0:39:42You might not want to now, but that is a lovely thing to
0:39:42 > 0:39:45have in your back pocket perhaps in five years' time.
0:39:45 > 0:39:48Yeah, definitely. It is a bit of a wasted space at the moment.
0:39:48 > 0:39:52- Isn't it?- Yeah. So we have now got to put a price on this property.
0:39:52 > 0:39:55We can see the potential, but as it stands,
0:39:55 > 0:39:56what do you think it's on the market for?
0:39:56 > 0:40:00Um... I'm going to go for...200.
0:40:00 > 0:40:01John?
0:40:01 > 0:40:04I'm going to go for...160.
0:40:04 > 0:40:06That's really interesting
0:40:06 > 0:40:11because the asking price is just over £177,000.
0:40:11 > 0:40:13Really?
0:40:13 > 0:40:14I feel at home in Mellieha,
0:40:14 > 0:40:16so I was really happy that you brought us here.
0:40:16 > 0:40:19And to have the price, yes. It's good.
0:40:19 > 0:40:22- Be my guest, go and have another look around.- Lovely. Thank you.
0:40:25 > 0:40:26So it's interesting, isn't it?
0:40:26 > 0:40:30You show somebody a completely different property and,
0:40:30 > 0:40:32in a way, you get the same result.
0:40:32 > 0:40:35They loved it. I am now confused.
0:40:35 > 0:40:39Is it a genuine "I love it"? Or is it, "Oh, this is interesting."
0:40:39 > 0:40:41Just going to have to wait and find out, aren't I?
0:41:03 > 0:41:06Well, when I came up, I wasn't too...
0:41:06 > 0:41:08I was a bit concerned. I wasn't too convinced.
0:41:08 > 0:41:12But being inside and looking around, it is a really nice house.
0:41:12 > 0:41:16- Yeah, it's nice.- Really nice. - Pleasantly surprised.
0:41:17 > 0:41:21- Those views are just beautiful. - And we know the area, you know.
0:41:21 > 0:41:23We've been, like we said, coming here for years.
0:41:23 > 0:41:26We know we can just jump on the bus down the road, we are
0:41:26 > 0:41:27at the beach in five minutes.
0:41:27 > 0:41:31Harry would love it. He knows where he is going here.
0:41:31 > 0:41:34And then the extra space you've got out the back, you can extend on.
0:41:34 > 0:41:36Yeah.
0:41:36 > 0:41:38It could be a little project for me.
0:41:39 > 0:41:41- Keep you busy. Hey, dear?- Yes, dear.
0:41:46 > 0:41:49Well, it has gone swimmingly well. And here they are.
0:41:49 > 0:41:51Right, you love the inside of that property.
0:41:51 > 0:41:55- Outside, can I convince you? - Yeah, I think so.- Yeah?
0:41:55 > 0:41:57- A bit of a rub down on the door, Johnny.- Give it a thought?
0:41:57 > 0:42:01- A little varnish, it'll be lovely. - I like that. I like that, options.
0:42:01 > 0:42:02Right, here we go.
0:42:11 > 0:42:14It's our final day here on the Mediterranean island of Malta,
0:42:14 > 0:42:17looking for a new home for Claire, John and their son, Harry,
0:42:17 > 0:42:22who are moving from Buckinghamshire with a budget of £200,000.
0:42:25 > 0:42:29It has been rather exciting showing Claire and John around Malta
0:42:29 > 0:42:33because, let's not forgot, they have sold their house back in the UK.
0:42:33 > 0:42:37And everything we have shown them, they have given glowing reports.
0:42:37 > 0:42:40But today, it is all about the mystery house.
0:42:40 > 0:42:44Now, I am thinking glamour. I'm thinking fabulous views.
0:42:44 > 0:42:49I'm thinking millionaire lifestyle but on a reasonable budget.
0:42:49 > 0:42:50How can they refuse?
0:42:54 > 0:42:57But before we head off for our final property,
0:42:57 > 0:43:00I found out there has been some important news.
0:43:02 > 0:43:06- Now, I've heard you have just had a phone call.- Yeah.
0:43:06 > 0:43:08Tell me, what was it about?
0:43:08 > 0:43:10We've got to go to the school tomorrow
0:43:10 > 0:43:14cos Harry's being enrolled into the school that we've been
0:43:14 > 0:43:18- going for since we've been here. - That's fantastic news!- Yeah.
0:43:18 > 0:43:22- Yeah.- Because you really didn't know, did you?- BOTH:- No.
0:43:22 > 0:43:23Just found out now.
0:43:23 > 0:43:25Oh, John, you are welling up!
0:43:25 > 0:43:29- No, it's brilliant. - That's brilliant news!
0:43:29 > 0:43:32You were praying for this school, it was so important.
0:43:32 > 0:43:36And in a way, you based the whole move on the school, haven't you?
0:43:36 > 0:43:37We have, yeah.
0:43:37 > 0:43:41On Harry getting into this school that we have wanted and fought for.
0:43:41 > 0:43:44Well, he did it. He did the test.
0:43:44 > 0:43:46Can you feel the weight has been lifted off your shoulders?
0:43:46 > 0:43:48- Totally.- Absolutely.- Yeah.
0:43:48 > 0:43:52Yeah, it is all for, you know, for Harry. Knowing that he
0:43:52 > 0:43:55is going to have the fantastic education that he deserves
0:43:55 > 0:43:57is just...
0:43:57 > 0:44:01- We really do need to find you somewhere to live.- BOTH:- Yes.
0:44:01 > 0:44:04But that is great news. Harry is sorted.
0:44:04 > 0:44:07- The first school of your choice. - BOTH:- Yes.
0:44:07 > 0:44:10- Really difficult to get him in there, wasn't it?- BOTH:- Yeah.

0:44:24 > 0:44:27For our mystery house, we are heading south to Kalkara,
0:44:27 > 0:44:31a village across the water from the capital of Valletta.
0:44:32 > 0:44:35In such a strategic position at the mouth of the Grand Harbour,
0:44:35 > 0:44:39this peninsula was home to the 19th century Fort Rinella.
0:44:39 > 0:44:42Built by the British to house the most powerful gun
0:44:42 > 0:44:47of its time, the Armstrong 100-ton canon, it is now a living museum.
0:44:48 > 0:44:51The area is seeing an injection of investment with
0:44:51 > 0:44:53the building of a technology park
0:44:53 > 0:44:57and residential development which aim to boost the local economy.
0:44:57 > 0:44:59With a population of 3,000,
0:44:59 > 0:45:02this village was originally built around Kalkara Creek,
0:45:02 > 0:45:05a sheltered inlet known for its boat-building of the traditional
0:45:05 > 0:45:11Maltese dghajsa, originally used as water taxis across the harbour.
0:45:11 > 0:45:14Up the hill from the creek in the new residential area
0:45:14 > 0:45:16is our mystery house. So...
0:45:16 > 0:45:19- It is time for our final property.- OK.
0:45:19 > 0:45:22- Now, this is our mystery house.- OK.
0:45:22 > 0:45:27- Or perhaps I should say mystery apartment.- OK, fine.- Yeah.- OK.
0:45:27 > 0:45:29Look at your face.
0:45:29 > 0:45:32You're like, "What has she got?" What have we discovered here?
0:45:32 > 0:45:35- I'll tell you what, let's step inside.- Both:- OK.
0:45:37 > 0:45:40Claire and John seem sceptical about this property.
0:45:40 > 0:45:43It might not be the characterful home they were after,
0:45:43 > 0:45:46but as a new-build apartment, it does offer some bonus
0:45:46 > 0:45:50facilities they haven't been able to get elsewhere.
0:45:50 > 0:45:54So, we are going to start the tour of our final property.
0:45:54 > 0:45:55- OK.- Right.
0:45:57 > 0:46:02- It's nice.- You walk straight into this reception room.- Yeah.
0:46:02 > 0:46:06- You can tell, it is a totally new build, isn't it?- It is, yeah.
0:46:06 > 0:46:11- And then you have this fabulous hallway.- It's amazing, isn't it?
0:46:11 > 0:46:16- That's lovely. That's really unexpected.- Shall we continue?- Yes.
0:46:16 > 0:46:17- Please, yeah.- Come on.
0:46:20 > 0:46:23- So you've got a good-sized double bedroom there.- Yeah.
0:46:25 > 0:46:28A second bedroom there, more of a children's bedroom.
0:46:28 > 0:46:30Family bathroom.
0:46:32 > 0:46:34And this is the master bedroom.
0:46:35 > 0:46:40- This is lovely.- It's very funky. - I like it, it's nice.
0:46:40 > 0:46:41So three bedrooms in total.
0:46:41 > 0:46:43Obviously, all on the same level.
0:46:43 > 0:46:48- But you have the en-suite. - Oh, lovely. That's a bonus.
0:46:48 > 0:46:52- So, do you like it so far? - Yes.- Very nice.- Yeah, I do.
0:46:53 > 0:46:58Well, one more very important room to show you. Let's keep going.
0:47:02 > 0:47:05And our final room is the kitchen living space.
0:47:05 > 0:47:09- This is nice.- It is a bit different, isn't it?- It is.
0:47:10 > 0:47:13I like the space. I like open plan.
0:47:13 > 0:47:16You have tremendous views out the window.
0:47:20 > 0:47:23Because if you're going to move abroad,
0:47:23 > 0:47:26- this is what you want to see. - Yes, it is stunning.
0:47:26 > 0:47:28- It's a lovely view, isn't it? - Isn't it?
0:47:28 > 0:47:31You've got the harbour, Kalkara Creek. You've got Valletta.
0:47:31 > 0:47:35- Oh, it's lovely. It's stunning. - It is. That is beautiful.
0:47:35 > 0:47:38So we have got to put a price on all of this.
0:47:38 > 0:47:40Have you been thinking how much it is on the market for?
0:47:40 > 0:47:42- Yeah, I've been thinking. - Have you?- Yeah.
0:47:42 > 0:47:45Well, I'll tell you what, hold that thought,
0:47:45 > 0:47:49- cos I do have one more thing to show you.- OK.- Let's go.
0:47:49 > 0:47:51After a slow start,
0:47:51 > 0:47:54John and Claire are definitely warming to this option.
0:47:54 > 0:47:57Also included is underground parking for two cars.
0:47:57 > 0:48:01But it is up on the roof where I've saved the best till last.
0:48:01 > 0:48:03- And this...- Oh, my goodness!
0:48:03 > 0:48:07..is your millionaire mystery pad pool.
0:48:07 > 0:48:13- Oh, my God! This is unbelievable. - Yes.- I was not expecting this at all.
0:48:13 > 0:48:16- This is what Harry is going to love. - Yes.
0:48:16 > 0:48:19- There are 12 other apartments in total.- Right.
0:48:19 > 0:48:21You do share this with the other apartments.
0:48:21 > 0:48:24- But, hey, it's not bad, is it? - No.- No.- Not bad at all.
0:48:24 > 0:48:27Rooftop swimming pool, you can't go wrong with that, can you?
0:48:27 > 0:48:30But can you afford it on your budget?
0:48:31 > 0:48:36Final time, guys, final time. What are you thinking?
0:48:36 > 0:48:41I'm going to go for 205, over budget. I'm going to go 205.
0:48:43 > 0:48:45220.
0:48:45 > 0:48:48- So both of you think it is over your budget.- Yes.
0:48:48 > 0:48:54The asking price is around £188,000.
0:48:54 > 0:48:56That's good, isn't it? Really, for what you are getting.
0:48:56 > 0:48:58Yeah, for what you are getting. I'm really surprised.
0:48:58 > 0:49:01I thought it would be over budget, I really did.
0:49:01 > 0:49:05- To have this is an absolute... Well, beyond a bonus, isn't it?- Yeah.
0:49:05 > 0:49:08Now you have seen this amazing pool, I think you should go back,
0:49:08 > 0:49:10have a look at the apartment.
0:49:10 > 0:49:13- OK, thank you.- Thank you.- Please do. You're welcome.
0:49:35 > 0:49:38- This is a nice sized room, John. - Yeah.
0:49:38 > 0:49:40Nice little room for Harry. Maybe.
0:49:40 > 0:49:42Maybe, yeah. Got little speakers in here as well, haven't you?
0:49:42 > 0:49:44Yeah, yeah, yeah.
0:49:44 > 0:49:47I think Harry'd be blown away. Especially by the swimming pool.
0:49:47 > 0:49:50Who could say that they've got a swimming pool on their rooftop?
0:49:50 > 0:49:53I mean, there's not many people they can say that, can they?
0:49:53 > 0:49:56- No.- And those views are just breathtaking.- Yeah.
0:49:56 > 0:49:57The head is spinning.
0:49:57 > 0:50:01Every house we've seen has got something that we love.
0:50:01 > 0:50:03Each has got an upside and each has got a downside.
0:50:03 > 0:50:06We have got to discuss it and see
0:50:06 > 0:50:09how we feel we want to move forward, so to speak.
0:50:09 > 0:50:12- And decide quite quickly, hadn't we? - Yes, dear.
0:50:15 > 0:50:20That's it. You've seen everything now. Property tours completed.
0:50:20 > 0:50:22You probably want some time to reflect on what you've seen.
0:50:22 > 0:50:25- And then, I think we should have a chat.- Definitely, yeah.
0:50:25 > 0:50:26Yeah, we need to.
0:50:33 > 0:50:36The island of Malta is famous across the world for one
0:50:36 > 0:50:38of its ancient local crafts - filigree.
0:50:40 > 0:50:43Filo is the Italian word for wire, and filigree jewellery
0:50:43 > 0:50:47and ornaments are made from delicate strands of silver or gold.
0:50:47 > 0:50:52Francesca Balzan is the curator of the Palazzo Falson Museum
0:50:52 > 0:50:56in Mdina which houses some of the finest examples of filigree.
0:50:58 > 0:51:00Francesca, lovely to meet you.
0:51:00 > 0:51:02Now, I am passionate about jewellery.
0:51:02 > 0:51:05But filigree jewellery, it's something else, isn't it?
0:51:05 > 0:51:07Absolutely. It really is a work of art.
0:51:07 > 0:51:10Very intricate, very precious little piece of art.
0:51:10 > 0:51:15And so, Francesca, when did it become really popular?
0:51:15 > 0:51:17Well, definitely in the 19th century.
0:51:17 > 0:51:20We know that it was being produced by a large number of craftsmen.
0:51:20 > 0:51:24And it was really popular in terms of people buying it as souvenirs
0:51:24 > 0:51:26when they were passing through Malta.
0:51:26 > 0:51:29What a wonderful thing to take away from Malta.
0:51:29 > 0:51:31I mean, just looking at it, it is exquisite.
0:51:31 > 0:51:36- It is quite wonderful, isn't it? It looks so delicate.- Absolutely.
0:51:36 > 0:51:39So the one thing that I've seen is the Maltese cross.
0:51:39 > 0:51:43- It's got eight points.- Yes. It is the cross of the Order of St John.
0:51:43 > 0:51:45The Order of St John settled in Malta in 1530,
0:51:45 > 0:51:49and it became very much a symbol of Malta.
0:51:49 > 0:51:52Well, I'm going to see one of your local jewellers, a real artisan,
0:51:52 > 0:51:56and I am going to be looking out for the eight-pronged cross in filigree.
0:51:56 > 0:51:59- Francesca, thank you very much. - Thank you.- Nice to meet you.
0:52:02 > 0:52:07I'm going to meet Gaetano Saliba, a leading multi-silversmith who is
0:52:07 > 0:52:10one of a handful of artisans on the island still making filigree
0:52:10 > 0:52:13jewellery using the traditional methods.
0:52:13 > 0:52:16Gaetano, how long have you been creating this wonderful
0:52:16 > 0:52:17filigree jewellery?
0:52:17 > 0:52:19I started in 1989.
0:52:19 > 0:52:22- Tell me, was it family business? - It was, it was.
0:52:22 > 0:52:29My grandfather started it in 1904 and my father took over and then me.
0:52:29 > 0:52:33The Maltese Cross is by far the most popular design
0:52:33 > 0:52:35and the one I'm going to attempt to make.
0:52:35 > 0:52:37What I will need are these.
0:52:37 > 0:52:40Cos my eyesight is not going to be as good as yours.
0:52:40 > 0:52:45- OK, precision here. - You are going to do an eye here.
0:52:45 > 0:52:49- And we are going to bend it like this.- So you sort of tap it round.
0:52:49 > 0:52:51Yes.
0:52:52 > 0:52:56- Is that too big an eye?- We can make it a little bit smaller, yeah.
0:52:56 > 0:52:59You sort of tapped it round, didn't you?
0:52:59 > 0:53:02- You have to hold it like this. - Mm-hm.
0:53:02 > 0:53:06And tap it. Like a pen. You have to hold it like a pen.
0:53:06 > 0:53:09You are being very polite, but this isn't going to be sold to
0:53:09 > 0:53:12anybody, is it? Let's be honest.
0:53:12 > 0:53:14How's that? A bit better?
0:53:14 > 0:53:16Good. Yeah.
0:53:16 > 0:53:19- I think you're being polite. - Yeah, I like it. I like it.
0:53:22 > 0:53:23It's shocking.
0:53:23 > 0:53:26Clearly, I'm no expert, Gaetano is.
0:53:26 > 0:53:30- He is going to show me the next stage.- Then we insert this inside.
0:53:30 > 0:53:33See? And then we get the other one.
0:53:36 > 0:53:40And we insert on the other side. Like this.
0:53:40 > 0:53:43On its own, it reminds me of sort of a butterfly wing.
0:53:43 > 0:53:46This process is repeated three more times for the other
0:53:46 > 0:53:47sections of the cross.
0:53:47 > 0:53:50Next step is soldering.
0:53:50 > 0:53:53Silver solder powder is finally sprinkled over the pieces to
0:53:53 > 0:53:55form a bonding agent.
0:53:56 > 0:54:00So, from here, it has to go on a firebrick, like this.
0:54:00 > 0:54:04The pieces need to be heated for the silver solder powder to
0:54:04 > 0:54:06melt and bond with the filling wire to the border.
0:54:13 > 0:54:15We heat the cross.
0:54:15 > 0:54:17And now it has started to melt.
0:54:17 > 0:54:19The solder.
0:54:19 > 0:54:20We get the second one.
0:54:21 > 0:54:25- It looks even finer.- Third one. Yep.
0:54:25 > 0:54:26And the fourth.
0:54:28 > 0:54:32To join these four sections, silver solder paste rather than
0:54:32 > 0:54:35powder is used, which makes a stronger bond.
0:54:36 > 0:54:39And we put some silver solder in the middle.
0:54:52 > 0:54:56- It is soldered, see?- Yeah.
0:54:57 > 0:55:01The final stage is to melt two silver links into a decorative
0:55:01 > 0:55:02central ball.
0:55:04 > 0:55:07And this, I have to solder it in the middle.
0:55:16 > 0:55:20- And then after that, in the shops, hopefully...- Yeah.
0:55:20 > 0:55:24- For another satisfied customer.- Yes. - Taking home a little bit of Malta.
0:55:26 > 0:55:27Thank you.
0:55:33 > 0:55:37So, really positive reactions from our couple on all our properties.
0:55:37 > 0:55:40So are they going to go for the more practical option or have
0:55:40 > 0:55:44they been won over by the Maltese character homes?
0:55:44 > 0:55:48I'm not sure. They might even keep looking. Well, let's ask them
0:55:48 > 0:55:49and find out.
0:55:51 > 0:55:52So, Claire and John,
0:55:52 > 0:55:57- we have established time is of the essence with this house move.- Yes.
0:55:57 > 0:56:00So, out of everything we have shown you, let's cut to the chase.
0:56:00 > 0:56:01Have we got close?
0:56:01 > 0:56:05- There is one in particular. - There is one.- Really?- Mellieha.
0:56:05 > 0:56:06The one with potential.
0:56:06 > 0:56:11What is it about that particular property that works for you?
0:56:11 > 0:56:14I think it is the area where it is, cos we know it so well.
0:56:14 > 0:56:19Harry knows it so well, which is really important to us.
0:56:19 > 0:56:22We are taking him away from where he knows in England...
0:56:22 > 0:56:26He knows Mellieha, he knows where the beach is. He knows the restaurants.
0:56:26 > 0:56:28He knows where the shops are.
0:56:28 > 0:56:30Cos he is going to be going to a brand-new school,
0:56:30 > 0:56:32I think it is important to keep him to an area that he'll know
0:56:32 > 0:56:34and he'll find comfortable.
0:56:34 > 0:56:36And also, as importantly for me,
0:56:36 > 0:56:39is the two of you with that property.
0:56:39 > 0:56:41- Did it feel like a home?- It did.
0:56:41 > 0:56:43The more I think about it, the more we talk about it,
0:56:43 > 0:56:48- the more I like it.- So how quickly are you happy to move?
0:56:48 > 0:56:52We are looking at contacting the owner with a view to purchase.
0:56:52 > 0:56:56I thought you might say to me, "We are going to have a second viewing,"
0:56:56 > 0:56:59but it sounds to me like you are practically there in your minds.
0:56:59 > 0:57:02- Yeah.- Yeah, pretty much.- Yeah.
0:57:02 > 0:57:04That's fantastic news!
0:57:04 > 0:57:07Well, I think the next conversation you are going to be having is
0:57:07 > 0:57:10- with the estate agent after this, isn't it?- Yes.
0:57:10 > 0:57:12- Well, listen, all the best.- Yes.
0:57:12 > 0:57:14I'm going to say cheers because I am delighted.
0:57:14 > 0:57:17- I hope everything goes according to plan.- Cheers.
0:57:17 > 0:57:19- And to your new life in Malta. - BOTH:- Thank you.
0:57:19 > 0:57:20Here's to you. Thank you.
0:57:20 > 0:57:24- Thank you for helping us make it possible.- You're welcome.
0:57:30 > 0:57:33Well, it has been a rather exciting week.
0:57:33 > 0:57:35John and Claire were desperate to move to Malta.
0:57:35 > 0:57:38They'd sold their house in the UK and were just waiting to hear
0:57:38 > 0:57:40if their son could enrol in the local school.
0:57:40 > 0:57:43Well, the good news is he has been accepted.
0:57:43 > 0:57:47So the final piece of the jigsaw was finding them
0:57:47 > 0:57:48a suitable family home.
0:57:48 > 0:57:51By the sounds of it, we have achieved just that.
0:57:51 > 0:57:53We wish all three of them
0:57:53 > 0:57:57the very best with their new Maltese way of life.
0:57:57 > 0:57:59We will see you again on Escape To The Continent.
0:58:01 > 0:58:03Claire and John spoke to the agent.
0:58:03 > 0:58:07But disappointingly, the Mellieha house was taken off the market.
0:58:07 > 0:58:11However, John and Claire are forging ahead, renting a similar
0:58:11 > 0:58:15house just up the road so Harry can begin his new school next month.
0:58:15 > 0:58:19Their Maltese adventure begins, and we wish them the best of luck.
