0:00:00 > 0:00:03Now on BBC News, it's time for The Travel Show.

0:00:04 > 0:00:06This week, I'm pulling pints in London.

0:00:06 > 0:00:08We're seeing what's trending in Travel Online.

0:00:08 > 0:00:11And Rajan's getting all presidential in Texas.

0:00:11 > 0:00:15UPBEAT MUSIC

0:00:46 > 0:00:50As summer approaches, London once again heaves with

0:00:50 > 0:00:56tourists, some of whom want a taste of something iconically British.

0:01:01 > 0:01:03The Japanese have their tea ceremonies,

0:01:03 > 0:01:07the French have their fine wines, but we Brits have this...

0:01:12 > 0:01:15The thing about real ale is it is an acquired taste.

0:01:15 > 0:01:18I would thoroughly recommend it to anybody who comes here,

0:01:18 > 0:01:21but you might want to have a plan B, just in case.

0:01:21 > 0:01:23Oh, that looks lovely.

0:01:23 > 0:01:26Would it be possible to have it in a hollowed-out coconut?

0:01:32 > 0:01:35But has Britain's national drink had its day?

0:01:35 > 0:01:38Well, its chief supporter thinks maybe.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41The Campaign for Real Ale says traditional pubs are closing at

0:01:41 > 0:01:45an alarming rate, around 30 week.

0:01:45 > 0:01:48Not only that, but the great British pint is being challenged by a

0:01:48 > 0:01:55fizzier and fruitier little number.

0:01:55 > 0:01:57This is what I love about London.

0:01:57 > 0:02:01There is always something exciting going on in the streets.

0:02:01 > 0:02:04Now I am in Bermondsey in South East London, which has been

0:02:04 > 0:02:05renamed Beermondsey because underneath these railway bridges

0:02:05 > 0:02:10there's a revolution brewing.

0:02:15 > 0:02:20In 2009 the first micro-brewery opened its doors here,

0:02:20 > 0:02:23and since then five more have popped up following the railway line.

0:02:23 > 0:02:26MUSIC

0:02:29 > 0:02:34In fact, there are now said to be 1500 small breweries in the UK.

0:02:34 > 0:02:38More than anywhere else per head in the world.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41And many of these are not brewing traditional real ale.

0:02:41 > 0:02:46They are making craft beer.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49UBREW opened two years ago, and it claims to be the first

0:02:49 > 0:02:55and only open brewery, where you can come along and make your own.

0:02:55 > 0:02:57For a relative novice like me, what's the difference

0:02:57 > 0:03:01between craft beer and real ale?

0:03:01 > 0:03:05So craft beer is about innovation, quality, and trying new things.

0:03:05 > 0:03:08Real ale is really about how it is stored.

0:03:08 > 0:03:10It is stored inside a cask and re-fermented naturally inside

0:03:10 > 0:03:16of the cask.

0:03:16 > 0:03:21It is a Saison made with passion fruit, it is nice and chilled.

0:03:21 > 0:03:23Give it a try.

0:03:23 > 0:03:25OK, passion fruit beer!

0:03:25 > 0:03:28There we go.

0:03:32 > 0:03:35What do you think?

0:03:35 > 0:03:37It's really nice.

0:03:37 > 0:03:39That is really nice - it's tasty.

0:03:39 > 0:03:39Absolutely.

0:03:39 > 0:03:43It goes down really smooth as well.

0:03:43 > 0:03:47It is a French yeast, being brewed by British brewers, then adding in

0:03:47 > 0:03:48tropical fruits, from the tropics.

0:03:48 > 0:03:52So it makes this incredible beer.

0:03:52 > 0:03:58So is this, and all we see around us, is this the death of real ale?

0:03:58 > 0:04:05It is probably... it is a challenge for real ale.

0:04:05 > 0:04:07Beer is beer.

0:04:07 > 0:04:11We are always going to be excited about beer, and some people are

0:04:11 > 0:04:14still going to like those real ales, those cask ales, and you will still

0:04:14 > 0:04:16meet those hard cores, for sure.

0:04:16 > 0:04:20I wouldn't say it is the death, but it is a big challenge for them,

0:04:20 > 0:04:22for sure.

0:04:25 > 0:04:28The truth is, there's no fixed definition of craft beer.

0:04:28 > 0:04:32It can be virtually indistinguishable from real ale.

0:04:32 > 0:04:35Would you like to do a taste comparison between real ale

0:04:35 > 0:04:37and some craft lager?

0:04:37 > 0:04:38OK.

0:04:38 > 0:04:39Yes?

0:04:39 > 0:04:42Yes.

0:04:42 > 0:04:44Oh, awful!

0:04:44 > 0:04:45You don't like it?!

0:04:45 > 0:04:48No!

0:04:50 > 0:04:53Mmm.

0:04:53 > 0:04:58That's an interesting face you're pulling there!

0:04:58 > 0:04:59No.

0:04:59 > 0:05:00Not really.

0:05:00 > 0:05:02All right.

0:05:02 > 0:05:07This is new craft beer, which everyone says is the future.

0:05:16 > 0:05:19But it tends to be made on a small-scale, and bottled,

0:05:19 > 0:05:23and it often comes with a younger, funkier image.

0:05:23 > 0:05:26This is the real ale, this stuff in front.

0:05:26 > 0:05:29So if you want to take a little bit each?

0:05:29 > 0:05:30Oh, nice!

0:05:30 > 0:05:32What do you say in Finland?

0:05:32 > 0:05:32Kippis!

0:05:32 > 0:05:33Kippis!

0:05:33 > 0:05:35Yes.

0:05:38 > 0:05:40It is quite good.

0:05:40 > 0:05:43Quite good.

0:05:43 > 0:05:43Definitely good.

0:05:43 > 0:05:46You love that!

0:05:46 > 0:05:48It is a really good, fresh beer.

0:05:48 > 0:05:52Oh, good fresh beer, that's quintessentially British.

0:05:52 > 0:05:58How does it taste, what do you think, would you like to try some?

0:05:58 > 0:06:00Lovely!

0:06:03 > 0:06:06There are still a lot of affection for real ale.

0:06:06 > 0:06:10Even the Chinese Premier wanted a taste of real ale on his last visit.

0:06:10 > 0:06:15Xi Jinping was photographed in a pub, drinking a pint,

0:06:15 > 0:06:21after which exports of India Pale Ale to China soared by 1600%.

0:06:23 > 0:06:27Sometimes what you want on your travels is authenticity.

0:06:27 > 0:06:31There is nowhere more authentic than my next stop.

0:06:31 > 0:06:34And specialist pubs like this one, here in north London, have become

0:06:35 > 0:06:37a destination in their own right.

0:06:37 > 0:06:39OK, it is time for a quick pint.

0:06:39 > 0:06:41Lovely!

0:06:41 > 0:06:44FUNKY MUSIC

0:06:47 > 0:06:49It may not look like much, but The Bree Louise is

0:06:49 > 0:06:55award-winning, and always busy with people who really know their beer.

0:06:55 > 0:06:58Its future is currently in doubt as it is earmarked

0:06:58 > 0:07:01for demolition when building work begins on the new HS2 high-speed

0:07:01 > 0:07:04railway link to Birmingham.

0:07:04 > 0:07:06Is there a craft beer revolution?

0:07:06 > 0:07:09Is there something going on that is affecting you guys?

0:07:09 > 0:07:11Absolutely.

0:07:11 > 0:07:14Craft beer is a revolution and its making everyone evolve

0:07:14 > 0:07:18and revolve with it.

0:07:18 > 0:07:22Ale, isn't it just like bitter and very, like, stodgy?

0:07:22 > 0:07:25Why would a young person want to drink that?

0:07:25 > 0:07:38You've got everything from hockey, multi, stout, mild, Porter, the

0:07:38 > 0:07:41caramel Malky Artur, a squid ink IPA, things with fruit, toffee, I've

0:07:41 > 0:07:43got a honey mild on at the moment.

0:07:43 > 0:07:44They are all over the place.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47So we've got a little bit of a surprise for you.

0:07:47 > 0:07:48Craig, meet Matt.

0:07:48 > 0:07:50Matt, Craig.

0:07:50 > 0:07:54Matt, sit down, this is Matt from UBrew in Bermondsey.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57Hi, Matt. How are you?

0:07:57 > 0:08:00Good to meet you. A little surprise for you guys.

0:08:00 > 0:08:02So Matt has brought along some craft beer.

0:08:02 > 0:08:02Yep?

0:08:02 > 0:08:05We want you to have a little sample of it and see what

0:08:05 > 0:08:07you think of the amber nectar.

0:08:07 > 0:08:09OK, let's do that.

0:08:09 > 0:08:14Up yours!

0:08:14 > 0:08:16That is a professional.

0:08:16 > 0:08:20That is absolutely fabulous, it really is fabulous.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23That's really interesting to hear that you're not against it, or...?

0:08:23 > 0:08:26No, not at all, I'll drink bottled craft beer where I can't

0:08:26 > 0:08:32find good cask ale, absolutely.

0:08:32 > 0:08:34Beer is beer, and passionate, innovative brewers, that is beer,

0:08:34 > 0:08:37and this is made by the same people that made these.

0:08:37 > 0:08:54Good beer will always prevail.

0:08:54 > 0:08:56I think I'll leave them to bond.

0:08:56 > 0:08:59You know what, there is nothing like a petition beer in a British

0:08:59 > 0:09:00boozer to bring people together.

0:09:00 > 0:09:03Now, if you are looking to wet your whistle on the road,

0:09:03 > 0:09:07and you are old enough and you are happy to drink responsibly, here are

0:09:07 > 0:09:08some trips to look out for.

0:09:08 > 0:09:10The coolest vodka on the planet has to be

0:09:10 > 0:09:13Iceberg Vodka, which is literally made from icebergs in Canada.

0:09:13 > 0:09:15Take a boat along the Newfoundland coast and taste some

0:09:15 > 0:09:17of the purest water on the planet.

0:09:17 > 0:09:20Then, when you're back ashore, try a shot of something stronger.

0:09:20 > 0:09:25The makers claim the iceberg water makes the vodka taste better.

0:09:25 > 0:09:30Staying in Britain, where it's boom time for makers of boutique gins.

0:09:30 > 0:09:33This company in West London will take you through the history of gin,

0:09:33 > 0:09:35and the flavourings that go into its drinks, with a glass

0:09:36 > 0:09:37in your hand, of course.

0:09:37 > 0:09:42If that's not enough, you can follow it up with

0:09:42 > 0:09:46a gin-themed meal at a nearby pub, with more gin tasting on the side.

0:09:46 > 0:09:48Lovely!

0:09:48 > 0:09:52Or take time in Paris to try absinthe, the traditional way.

0:09:52 > 0:09:56There is a ritual to drinking it properly, dripping iced water over

0:09:56 > 0:10:01a sugar cube and letting a trip into your glass.

0:10:01 > 0:10:03Forget anything you have heard about absinthe giving you hallucinations,

0:10:03 > 0:10:09it doesn't, but be careful.

0:10:09 > 0:10:12It's still pretty potent stuff.

0:10:14 > 0:10:20Still to come on the Travel Show, we round up some of the latest

0:10:20 > 0:10:24virals, as we find out what's trending on Travel On The Web.

0:10:24 > 0:10:26And Rajan is in Texas, finding out why JFK's final hours

0:10:27 > 0:10:33are being immortalised in Opera.

0:10:33 > 0:10:35So don't go away.

0:10:51 > 0:10:53The Travel Show, your essential guide, wherever you're headed.

0:10:53 > 0:10:56Hello and welcome to Trending Travel, where we explore what's

0:10:56 > 0:10:58hot online in the world of travel.

0:10:58 > 0:11:01I'll be bringing you through those essential apps, videos and blogs to

0:11:01 > 0:11:03take with you when you leave home.

0:11:03 > 0:11:05Our top social media stories this month begin in Iran.

0:11:05 > 0:11:06Images of female tourist there removing

0:11:06 > 0:11:09hijabs, where wearing one is a legal requirement, have been shared tens

0:11:09 > 0:11:12of thousands of times online, after a controversial Facebook campaign.

0:11:12 > 0:11:15When it was announced that Air France would begin flying into

0:11:15 > 0:11:18Tehran after an 80 year hiatus, a number of the female crew called for

0:11:18 > 0:11:22the right to opt out of working on the new route, due to an internal

0:11:22 > 0:11:24memo asking them to wear a hijab when disembarking

0:11:24 > 0:11:28the plane in the Iranian capital.

0:11:28 > 0:11:30In support of their concerns, online movement, My Stealthy

0:11:30 > 0:11:33Freedom, asked all female visitors to Iran to remove their headscarves

0:11:33 > 0:11:37and send in photographs.

0:11:37 > 0:11:41The crew members have since won their battle.

0:11:41 > 0:11:45In the UK, an online vote on the name of a new vessel destined for

0:11:45 > 0:11:47polar research has been the unlikely subject of attention, after one

0:11:47 > 0:11:52suggestion was a clear favourite.

0:11:52 > 0:11:54Royal research ship, Boaty McBoatface, was voted

0:11:54 > 0:11:58for tens of thousands of times.

0:11:58 > 0:12:00However, the choice was not binding, leaving science Minister Joe

0:12:00 > 0:12:03Johnson to explain that they preferred a name that lasts longer

0:12:03 > 0:12:08than a social media news cycle.

0:12:08 > 0:12:11Good news now for a woman from Kenya, who edited herself

0:12:11 > 0:12:14into a series of other people's holiday photographs on her Facebook

0:12:14 > 0:12:22page, after being unable to afford a trip to Asia herself.

0:12:22 > 0:12:25Seve Gats' photoshopped images were so unrealistic that they have been

0:12:25 > 0:12:27liked thousands of times, during the attention of a Nairobi

0:12:27 > 0:12:36businessman, who raised enough money for her to go on holiday.

0:12:36 > 0:12:38Of course, people on social media couldn't help

0:12:38 > 0:12:41editing Seve into other images from around the world, using

0:12:41 > 0:12:43the hashtag #WhereIsSeveGatsNow.

0:12:43 > 0:12:45And finally, could this be the future of travel?

0:12:45 > 0:12:48Hoverboards have long been dreamed of, so when this test drive

0:12:48 > 0:12:50of a new flyboard invention was released on YouTuber earlier this

0:12:50 > 0:12:55month, millions of people watched it in action.

0:12:55 > 0:12:59It is some way off hitting the shops so don't hold your breath just yet.

0:12:59 > 0:13:02We love staying connected with you all online, and don't forget, we're

0:13:02 > 0:13:08on Facebook, Twitter, and e-mail.

0:13:08 > 0:13:10And you've been sending us some great stuff this month.

0:13:10 > 0:13:13Especially via twitter, on Tuesday is, where you've been sending us

0:13:13 > 0:13:16your photos from around the world, using the hashtag #TravelTuesday.

0:13:16 > 0:13:18Check out our Twitter and Facebook pages for loads of exclusive

0:13:18 > 0:13:21Travel Show content and top travel news stories to keep

0:13:21 > 0:13:33you up-to-date and inspired for your next world-class adventure.

0:13:33 > 0:13:35Now, let's look at the viral videos that have been

0:13:35 > 0:13:37clocking up the views this month.

0:13:37 > 0:13:39Northern Norway, sparsely populated, with beautiful characteristic

0:13:39 > 0:13:41fishing villages, it may be more well-known to travellers

0:13:41 > 0:13:44for its Northern lights, but in this video, Dennis Schmelz captures the

0:13:44 > 0:13:45sprawling beauty of the Lofoten archipelago

0:13:45 > 0:13:58in a majestic aerial film.

0:13:58 > 0:14:01And finally, back to Iran, where Canadian resident Navid

0:14:01 > 0:14:06Shahram's hyper-lapse video of the country he was born in uncovered a

0:14:06 > 0:14:07less well-trodden traveller's path.

0:14:07 > 0:14:10The reason I made a video, and it was very personal for me,

0:14:10 > 0:14:13it was because there was never enough unique content coming out

0:14:13 > 0:14:14of Isfahan, or Iran in general.

0:14:14 > 0:14:17It is a beautiful country, it was basically the capital

0:14:17 > 0:14:35of art and poetry, and it really saddened me that no one saw that.

0:14:35 > 0:14:44# "In Love" - Kiyarash Sanjarani Vahed.

0:14:44 > 0:14:47And don't forget to check out our website for all the ways that

0:14:47 > 0:14:51you can get in touch, or if you have seen anything online that you

0:14:51 > 0:14:52think we should be looking at.

0:14:52 > 0:15:01See you next time.

0:15:01 > 0:15:05Up next, we sent Rajan to trace the legacy left by a man who in life

0:15:05 > 0:15:08transformed the American presidency, but whose death spawned an entire

0:15:08 > 0:15:26industry of conspiracy theories.

0:15:26 > 0:15:30Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do

0:15:30 > 0:15:31for your country.

0:15:31 > 0:15:34Those were the words uttered by John F.

0:15:34 > 0:15:37Kennedy at his inauguration in 1961, before he took his chair

0:15:37 > 0:15:38in the Oval Office.

0:15:38 > 0:15:41Except this isn't the Oval Office in Washington, DC, it's a very good

0:15:41 > 0:15:45replica in Dallas, Texas.

0:15:45 > 0:15:46Nonetheless, here at the George W Bush

0:15:46 > 0:15:50Presidential Museum you can get a sense of what it's like to be in the

0:15:50 > 0:16:11driving seat of a world superpower.

0:16:11 > 0:16:13But, of course, Dallas will forever be associated with one particular

0:16:13 > 0:16:20president, and it's not George W.

0:16:20 > 0:16:21Tourists, conspiracy theorists and American

0:16:21 > 0:16:25citizens, still coming to terms with a momentous and dark moment in US

0:16:25 > 0:16:27history, have been travelling here for more than half a century.

0:16:27 > 0:16:31This is where you walk?

0:16:31 > 0:16:32Yes.

0:16:32 > 0:16:33And running, presumably?

0:16:33 > 0:16:35Yes.

0:16:35 > 0:16:37Newsman, Pierce Allman, was outside the book depository off

0:16:37 > 0:16:39Dealey Plaza when President John F.

0:16:39 > 0:16:40Kennedy was shot in November 1963.

0:16:40 > 0:16:43He ran to call the story in, when he crossed paths with

0:16:43 > 0:16:50a certain Lee Harvey Oswald.

0:16:50 > 0:16:53There was a guy standing at the doorway, and I said,

0:16:53 > 0:16:54"where's the phone?",

0:16:54 > 0:16:57and he jerked his thumb, and he said, "in there",

0:16:57 > 0:17:00and it never dawned on me that the man I had encountered was, in fact,

0:17:00 > 0:17:02the assassin, leaving the building.

0:17:02 > 0:17:04He was not in a hurry, he was not breathing hard,

0:17:04 > 0:17:16he seemed, you know, very calm.

0:17:16 > 0:17:18And now, 53 years later, people still travel from within

0:17:18 > 0:17:21the US and from abroad to understand how it could have happened.

0:17:21 > 0:17:24People are very willing to give you their theories as to why

0:17:24 > 0:17:31JFK was really assassinated.

0:17:31 > 0:17:33I've been given this piece of paper, for example,

0:17:33 > 0:17:34which lists the reasons.

0:17:34 > 0:17:36It just goes to show conspiracy theories are alive

0:17:36 > 0:17:44and kicking round these parts.

0:17:44 > 0:17:47A whole dark tourism industry has built up around this event, with

0:17:47 > 0:17:50everything from bus tours, walking tours, vintage cars and a sixth

0:17:50 > 0:17:59floor Museum at the site where Lee Harvey Oswald fired his three shots.

0:17:59 > 0:18:01And then they turned the corner, and, boom!

0:18:02 > 0:18:10One window down from the top.

0:18:10 > 0:18:12OK.

0:18:12 > 0:18:16It actually is the sixth floor.

0:18:16 > 0:18:18On the fifth floor window, there were three guys literally

0:18:18 > 0:18:23hanging out of the window and looking up and pointing up.

0:18:23 > 0:18:27And there is an X that marks the spot where he was when he was shot.

0:18:27 > 0:18:37In a sense, it put Dallas on the map, that event.

0:18:37 > 0:18:40I'm not sure Dallas will ever, ever totally set aside

0:18:40 > 0:18:41the event that happened here.

0:18:41 > 0:18:42There will always be curiosity.

0:18:42 > 0:18:46There will always be, I think, a sense of wanting to be a part

0:18:46 > 0:18:56of the reality.

0:18:56 > 0:19:05BLUES MUSIC.

0:19:05 > 0:19:08This is big Jake, he weighs 2200 LB, or one metric tonne.

0:19:08 > 0:19:13Rides like a Cadillac.

0:19:13 > 0:19:16An hour down the road stands another Texas city called Fort Worth.

0:19:16 > 0:19:19It's here that a different side to the Kennedy story is now being told.

0:19:19 > 0:19:22Because the very morning before JFK was shot in Dallas, he was here,

0:19:22 > 0:19:25in much happier circumstances, making an impromptu speech to

0:19:25 > 0:19:27thousands of excited spectators, and it is that more positive memory

0:19:27 > 0:19:30that is the subject of a new opera.

0:19:30 > 0:19:59# Mr President, I'm lifting you from the floor, and we'll carry you...#.

0:19:59 > 0:20:02Who knew that that this quick night in a Fort Worth hotel

0:20:02 > 0:20:03would end up being his last?

0:20:03 > 0:20:07In a way it was on special at all in that moment, and looking back

0:20:07 > 0:20:10on it, the whole point of the opera is to explore what sort

0:20:10 > 0:20:12of interpersonal relationships they might have discussed.

0:20:12 > 0:20:15I think you can crawl even more, it can be like...

0:20:15 > 0:20:17I think this opera is in many ways an antidote to

0:20:17 > 0:20:20the fetishization of what happened in Dallas, and we can't always look

0:20:20 > 0:20:21at history looking backwards.

0:20:21 > 0:20:25I think it's really helpful to see a hope and optimism that can take

0:20:25 > 0:20:26place before a tragedy.

0:20:26 > 0:20:29So I think this opera really does speak to a richer interpretation

0:20:29 > 0:20:31of their lives, and not sort of distilling it

0:20:31 > 0:20:43down to one tragic moment.

0:20:43 > 0:20:46One of the freeing things about this piece in particular is

0:20:46 > 0:20:48that we are not doing a documentary of these people.

0:20:48 > 0:21:00This evening that nobody really knows what transpired.

0:21:00 > 0:21:04This is not a sad tale, this is a tale of the two of them,

0:21:04 > 0:21:14and their strength, and their ability to overcome.

0:21:14 > 0:21:18So, with the JFK offer of being premiered at Fort Worth Opera

0:21:18 > 0:21:20Festival over half a century after his death, the story and myths

0:21:20 > 0:21:23around JFK continue to fascinate, and looks set to fuel the tourist

0:21:23 > 0:21:26economy in this part of the world for many years to come.

0:21:26 > 0:21:30Well, sadly that is all we have got this week but don't worry,

0:21:30 > 0:21:51because coming up next week...

0:21:51 > 0:21:55Carmen is in Japan, finding out if she has got what it takes to become

0:21:55 > 0:21:59a ninja, and we are joining this man, as he attempts to walk every

0:21:59 > 0:22:05single street in New York City.

0:22:05 > 0:22:09So make sure you join us for that, if you can, and, don't forget,

0:22:09 > 0:22:11you can follow us on social media.

0:22:11 > 0:22:14All the details are on the bottom of the screen, but for now,

0:22:14 > 0:22:17from all of us here on London's Millennium Bridge, it's bye-bye.

0:22:17 > 0:22:21UPBEAT MUSIC.

0:22:48 > 0:22:50Hello once again.

0:22:50 > 0:22:53The bank holiday will start on a pretty chilly note.
