:00:00. > :00:12.This week I am finding out what it takes to be a real-life ninja in

:00:13. > :00:16.Japan. I don't think ninjas are meant to giggle. Joe is trying to

:00:17. > :00:22.catch up with a man walking every street in New York. And Tommy has a

:00:23. > :00:26.suitcase that charges his phone and tell them when it is overweight. It

:00:27. > :00:31.is a bit like travelling with my wife, except without the arguments.

:00:32. > :01:04.Ssh! The ninja. A mysterious undercover

:01:05. > :01:08.agent in feudal Japan. Skilled in espionage and assassination, living

:01:09. > :01:13.in the shadows, and now you can apply to be won. Far from hiding in

:01:14. > :01:19.the dark, the next generation of ninjas answered a job ad.

:01:20. > :01:25.Full-time, central Japan, salary around 1600 US dollars a month.

:01:26. > :01:30.Hundreds of people applied and auditioned for the jobs, including

:01:31. > :01:36.many from overseas. The lucky winners are based here. It is part

:01:37. > :01:41.of a mighty tourism push before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, to bring in

:01:42. > :01:48.more tourists to the region, and in particular the city, which visitors

:01:49. > :01:53.often pass by. TRANSLATION: The aim of this is to bring in as many

:01:54. > :01:56.foreign tourists as we can. We have brought in ninjas because they have

:01:57. > :02:03.a historical connection to the area. They will perform and they will mix

:02:04. > :02:09.with the tourist. This is the local castle, and these are some of the

:02:10. > :02:21.chosen few, the new ninjas. And yes, one of them is in Japanese. He is

:02:22. > :02:25.from America. I think it is every foreign kid's dream at one point,

:02:26. > :02:29.every kid, every kid dreams about becoming a ninja at some point in

:02:30. > :02:33.their life. For me I just held on to that dream a little longer than most

:02:34. > :02:38.people. And I know you have just started, but what is it like to be

:02:39. > :02:41.the only foreign ninja? It's a challenge, it's a challenge. I

:02:42. > :02:49.thought I could come to Japan, find a ninja clan, and that would be it.

:02:50. > :02:52.But it is a constant progression of learning of studying, and struggling

:02:53. > :03:05.with Japanese. But I have never been happier, so... We have been allowed

:03:06. > :03:13.in to watch the ninjas train. It is not just physical. There is also a

:03:14. > :03:23.history to be learnt. It will be an intensive month, ahead of this

:03:24. > :03:25.modern date ninja team's debut. It is only a training session, but

:03:26. > :03:31.there is already a lot of media interest. And for me it feels like

:03:32. > :03:37.there is a reality TV show or talent show element to this process. But

:03:38. > :03:41.not everyone is buying into the hype. Some purists are worried that

:03:42. > :03:46.this sort of campaign is sending a distorted image of the Japanese icon

:03:47. > :03:51.to the rest of the world. TRANSLATION: The main thing about

:03:52. > :03:55.ninjas is the mental side, how to lead, and so on. In the

:03:56. > :03:58.entertainment industry, the physical side is exaggerated, and some people

:03:59. > :04:03.think it is cool. But you have to earn it. I would rather other people

:04:04. > :04:11.see what real ninjas do, and then decide for themselves if it is worth

:04:12. > :04:15.it. That is my wish. Back in Nagoya, the region's seven newest ninjas are

:04:16. > :04:23.training at the castle, and they are already drawing in the crowds. Have

:04:24. > :04:32.a wonderful time in Japan. But how close is this to the revered life of

:04:33. > :04:37.the ninja of old? Two hours from Nagoya, I have been told this is the

:04:38. > :04:43.heart of ninja country. So hundreds of years ago, real-life ninjas

:04:44. > :04:47.trained in these mountains here, so I have come to this ninja training

:04:48. > :04:56.camp to try and get an authentic ninja experience. Ninja forest has

:04:57. > :05:03.been set up to cater to tourists in a natural setting. I might look the

:05:04. > :05:13.part, but can I cut it as a real-life ninja? To my relief, we

:05:14. > :05:23.started the day with some prayers and meditation. Then it was time to

:05:24. > :05:30.leave the safe surrounds of the temple, and head to the training

:05:31. > :05:34.Corps. To be honest, I'm a bit nervous, I don't want to fall flat

:05:35. > :05:41.on my face and embarrass myself. Time to say hello to the assistant

:05:42. > :05:51.chief ninja here. First I learn the art of the shuriken, or ninja star.

:05:52. > :05:55.TRANSLATION: Shuriken was a weapon that was only used as a last resort.

:05:56. > :06:07.They would put poison on the tips here to kill the enemy. It can kill

:06:08. > :06:14.you? So how do we hold it? Right? And right there. So you quench your

:06:15. > :06:21.thirst, and then just between the thumb. All right, here goes. This is

:06:22. > :06:32.actually more difficult than it looks. Then it was on to the wire.

:06:33. > :06:39.What would this be used for? If there was a castle, and the Moat. So

:06:40. > :06:56.the rope would help you get over the water? Yes. All ninja like here.

:06:57. > :07:15.OK, I don't think ninjas are meant to giggle. OK. And then, the skill

:07:16. > :07:32.of scaling walls undetected. You don't expect me to do that, do you?

:07:33. > :07:48.It's almost as tall as me. I wouldn't say it was easy, and they

:07:49. > :07:58.definitely didn't say it was pretty, but I managed it so they upped the

:07:59. > :07:59.NT. -- ante. OK, so this wall is definitely taller than me. Should I

:08:00. > :08:23.run? I don't think I can do it again!

:08:24. > :08:45.Time to let go of any dreams I have of becoming a true ninja.

:08:46. > :08:52.Let's go to southern Spain, now, to meet a man whose skill with a knife

:08:53. > :08:54.could beat even the finest ninjas, and who has dedicated his life to

:08:55. > :10:44.one of Spain's gourmet treasures. The ham master is so important,

:10:45. > :10:53.because after five years working, in two hours you can break all this

:10:54. > :10:56.work. When you are a ham master, you are professional person that knows

:10:57. > :11:07.how to carve the ham. The kind of slice you have to cut, how to put in

:11:08. > :11:08.the blade, how to serve, it is a very important moment in the life of

:11:09. > :12:16.a ham. Still to come on the Travel Show:

:12:17. > :12:20.Tommy is seeking out the best in the world of gadgets. This week, a

:12:21. > :12:26.security camera that knows who is at home when you are away. And Jo

:12:27. > :12:35.catches up with a man walking every inch of every street in New York

:12:36. > :12:49.city. So don't go away. The Travel Show, your essential guide, wherever

:12:50. > :12:53.you are heading. Welcome to another instalment for all of your essential

:12:54. > :12:56.travel gadgets. First up is a suitcase unlike any other I have

:12:57. > :13:01.come across, because the makers claim that this one Kenway is self,

:13:02. > :13:04.it has smartphone access, and will even send you a text message when it

:13:05. > :13:10.arrives in baggage reclaim. Sounds impressive. We have seen quite a few

:13:11. > :13:15.smart suitcases launched over the past year, and this has now added

:13:16. > :13:19.itself to that list. It is loaded with hi-tech features, including a

:13:20. > :13:23.smart handle which can link to your phone and music. There is a built-in

:13:24. > :13:27.charging dock, a digital weighing scale, tracking system and an SOS

:13:28. > :13:32.alarm. This is a gadget lovers case. There is so much going on inside,

:13:33. > :13:36.and as you can imagine, with all that technology, it can be a little

:13:37. > :13:39.bit on the heavy side. But it is practical, it has been really well

:13:40. > :13:43.thought out, with you, the traveller in mind. This is the kind of case

:13:44. > :13:47.that communicates to. It even tells you when it is a little bit the

:13:48. > :13:48.heavy side. It is a bit like travelling with my wife, except

:13:49. > :14:00.without the argument. Competition is really fierce in home

:14:01. > :14:06.security but manufacturers are trying to find unique ways of making

:14:07. > :14:11.their product stand out. This one not only tells you what is going on

:14:12. > :14:17.at home that you can teach it to know who you'll friends and families

:14:18. > :14:25.are. Added peace of mind when you are away thanks to facial

:14:26. > :14:29.recognition technology. It lets you and anyone passes in front of the

:14:30. > :14:35.camera but it also claims to know if the familiar face has entered your

:14:36. > :14:41.home or stranger. It needs strong Wi-Fi connection and some people may

:14:42. > :14:47.not like the idea of you knowing when someone at home is having

:14:48. > :14:54.stranger over. Although, I cannot imagine why! It does not look like

:14:55. > :14:58.piece of home surveillance kit and the way it can integrate into your

:14:59. > :15:03.life is changing all the time. You can use it in different ways. There

:15:04. > :15:10.are lots to choose from. My advice is this, work out what it is you

:15:11. > :15:14.need and before you part with your money do your homework. Nothing

:15:15. > :15:17.beats and good look when you are travelling but carrying around at

:15:18. > :15:24.tablet is that it'll be on the quayside. That was the case until

:15:25. > :15:31.this came along. This is an new neat little e-reader. They say it is the

:15:32. > :15:37.biggest jump forward. Smaller, economically friendly and out bigger

:15:38. > :15:47.battery life and the display is brighter. There is much more to

:15:48. > :15:56.this. 60% more LED is, 20% lighter. You can fill the difference. But

:15:57. > :16:01.more comes at price. This is significantly dearer than the

:16:02. > :16:09.existing model. He needs aid BBC cameraman! 360 degrees of filming. I

:16:10. > :16:18.bet your camera cannot do that, hey! All of this without even moving

:16:19. > :16:23.my feet. It also captures stills and produces CD hand-held videos, giving

:16:24. > :16:28.it our professional touch. They claim it is eight step up from your

:16:29. > :16:34.regular cameras and gives it to be sold footage without the big budget.

:16:35. > :16:44.It is really well-designed and super easy to use. It will however take

:16:45. > :16:50.little bit longer to master it. The battery power is problem but think

:16:51. > :16:56.of the views you can capture. I can say this move -- save this move for

:16:57. > :17:12.the dancefloor. New York is home to some of the most

:17:13. > :17:21.iconic and photographed tourist attractions in the world. And those

:17:22. > :17:28.that visit will often have checklist of what they want to see and snap.

:17:29. > :17:33.But what if you want to get under the skin of this enormous city? We

:17:34. > :17:35.sent do to meet the man who is getting completely different Perspex

:17:36. > :17:47.deep on the Big Apple. Thank you so much. We are

:17:48. > :17:51.half-an-hour's drive from the main tourist attraction and am yet to

:17:52. > :17:57.meet someone who has taken sightseeing to whole new level. Am

:17:58. > :18:01.trying to find Matt Green, the man who was made his mission to walk

:18:02. > :18:06.every street art this map of New York. Plotting his progress in red

:18:07. > :18:14.and photographed in whatever catches his eye. As he is constantly moving,

:18:15. > :18:24.it is proving difficult to catch up with him. Don't worry, we will get

:18:25. > :18:28.back in the car! So we are in different area now. It is very

:18:29. > :18:30.suburban but hopefully he will be lurking about here somewhere. Thank

:18:31. > :18:50.you. He did say to me here. Matt! Hey,

:18:51. > :18:59.how are you. You have what so far. Nice to meet you. So I can join you

:19:00. > :19:06.on your street walk today? Sure. Now that we have found him, the next

:19:07. > :19:10.challenge is filming the man who will not stop walking. And you do

:19:11. > :19:19.this every day? I working on this project every day. The blog site

:19:20. > :19:25.that has kind of overtaken the walking side of it because high of

:19:26. > :19:37.started researching what I see -- I have started. Wasn't that that bit?

:19:38. > :19:46.I do not want to cut corners. You really are walking every metre of

:19:47. > :19:51.this place, are you not! Well, if I cut the corner, you know, I am not

:19:52. > :19:59.walking the block, you know. When I finish block, I go home, walking

:20:00. > :20:07.from the subway to my home, I still have it in my head that they have to

:20:08. > :20:12.do that. In 2010, he quit his job as an engineer and walked across

:20:13. > :20:20.America, pushing the car of his belongings along the way. -- carts.

:20:21. > :20:24.When he finished that will, he decided that instead of seeing

:20:25. > :20:29.million places or minute each, he wanted to spend million minutes

:20:30. > :20:35.exploring just one place - New York City. I want to take photos of

:20:36. > :20:41.whatever catches my eye. Be open to different things and not think it is

:20:42. > :20:45.something important? Does it have historical or cultural importance?

:20:46. > :20:59.It gives me this very personal connection to the city. I add

:21:00. > :21:07.about... 6800. You have 1200 to go? Probably little more. I do not know

:21:08. > :21:14.what the total will be. This actually... This was painted for

:21:15. > :21:19.9/11. I take the photo of every 9/11 memorial I see, which is an

:21:20. > :21:24.interesting view of our people deal with grief and how it changes over

:21:25. > :21:27.time. How people physically expressed their grief and the kind

:21:28. > :21:32.of emotions people have. I would have thought that initially, you

:21:33. > :21:38.would see more anger but a lot of it is about healing. So that is just

:21:39. > :21:47.the little window about aspects of New York. We finish the walk in the

:21:48. > :21:56.heart of Chinatown. We are in downtime flushing. Crowded with

:21:57. > :22:02.people. You can see where the red lines are not is where I have to

:22:03. > :22:07.still walk. He thinks it will take him another year to achieve his goal

:22:08. > :22:11.by which time he thinks he would have covered more than 8000 miles.

:22:12. > :22:20.It is certainly not the speedy way to sightseeing but I cannot imagine

:22:21. > :22:23.that anyone knows the city is. Wonderful but exhausting way to see

:22:24. > :22:28.the Big Apple. That is all we have time for this week. Coming up next

:22:29. > :22:34.week: Chris is going deep underground in Hungary, down dark

:22:35. > :22:40.Creek with paddle. I think am supposed to paddle the water and not

:22:41. > :22:46.the walls, what do you eat! I hope you can join us for that if you can.

:22:47. > :22:49.All details for social media are on the screen now. From all the team,

:22:50. > :23:13.it is goodbye. Well, there's been a lot

:23:14. > :23:16.of fine weather across much We certainly ended the week

:23:17. > :23:20.on a pretty promising note, for many A view from one

:23:21. > :23:25.of our weather Watchers in Norfolk,
