0:00:03 > 0:00:06Now it's time for The Travel Show.

0:00:06 > 0:00:09This week on The Travel Show...

0:00:09 > 0:00:12So we're going to be diving on an archaeological site?

0:00:12 > 0:00:13Yeah, exactly.

0:00:13 > 0:00:13Underwater?

0:00:13 > 0:00:14Exactly.

0:00:14 > 0:00:16We're swimming back to the Bronze Age in Macedonia.

0:00:16 > 0:00:21Oh, wow.

0:00:21 > 0:00:25You see all walks of life coming in to get a tattoo,

0:00:25 > 0:00:26bankers, lawyers, doctors.

0:00:26 > 0:00:28We're making a lasting mark in Singapore.

0:00:28 > 0:00:30It's art, and it's beautiful art at that.

0:00:30 > 0:00:33We're taking someone else's seat in first class.

0:00:33 > 0:00:36If someone finds me in an airport and says, hey,

0:00:36 > 0:00:39catch me if you can, yes, I will switch seats with you.

0:00:39 > 0:00:44You can take my first or business class seat and I'll go back

0:00:44 > 0:00:48to wherever you're sitting.

0:00:48 > 0:00:52I'm going to prepare this how it would have been in the Tudor times.

0:00:52 > 0:00:54And we're taking a bite out of one of King Henry

0:00:54 > 0:00:55VIII's favourite treats.

0:01:24 > 0:01:27First this week, we're visiting this small country with a big history

0:01:27 > 0:01:31and sites stating all the way back to the Bronze Age.

0:01:31 > 0:01:34People there are hoping that ancient past will pull in today's tourists.

0:01:34 > 0:01:37We sent Amanda Ruggieri to Lake Ohrid in Macedonia to find out more.

0:01:37 > 0:01:39This mostly rural country has drawn people and empires

0:01:40 > 0:01:45for thousands of years.

0:01:53 > 0:01:56The ancient Persians conquered this area,

0:01:56 > 0:02:03so did Alexander the Great.

0:02:03 > 0:02:08So I arrived into Macedonia late last night.

0:02:08 > 0:02:11It is a landlocked little country in the Balkans,

0:02:11 > 0:02:14so I drove 3.5 hours through mountains and forests.

0:02:14 > 0:02:16It was lush, it was absolutely beautiful.

0:02:16 > 0:02:21But I didn't see a single body of water.

0:02:21 > 0:02:24Until I drove over a hill and found myself here at Lake Ohrid,

0:02:24 > 0:02:36one of the most beautiful lakes I think I've ever seen.

0:02:36 > 0:02:38This is the oldest lake in Europe.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41The area around it is old as well.

0:02:41 > 0:02:44Even the town of Ohrid already was a town at the time

0:02:45 > 0:02:45that

0:02:45 > 0:02:48King Alexander the Great was king in the fourth century BC.

0:02:48 > 0:02:51That ancient history is one of the main reasons

0:02:51 > 0:02:59visitors love to come here.

0:02:59 > 0:03:02Most of the tourists want to experience the ancient

0:03:02 > 0:03:02thing,

0:03:02 > 0:03:03to see the culture here.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06What about as a local, as a Macedonian, what does

0:03:06 > 0:03:08the history here mean to you?

0:03:08 > 0:03:10The history, I actually love the history.

0:03:10 > 0:03:17At the same time I'm feeling so proud about my history.

0:03:17 > 0:03:19I've got a sense of this lake's extraordinary

0:03:19 > 0:03:20history from its surface.

0:03:20 > 0:03:29Hello!

0:03:29 > 0:03:30Hi, nice to meet you.

0:03:30 > 0:03:31Nice to meet you!

0:03:31 > 0:03:32A little diving today?

0:03:32 > 0:03:33Yes, please.

0:03:33 > 0:03:39Come on.

0:03:39 > 0:03:42But to really go in search of Lake Ohrid's ancient roots,

0:03:42 > 0:03:44I have to get a little wet.

0:03:44 > 0:03:45You are ready?

0:03:45 > 0:03:57Come on, follow me.

0:03:57 > 0:03:59So we're going to be diving on an archaeological site?

0:04:00 > 0:04:00Yeah, exactly.

0:04:00 > 0:04:00Underwater?

0:04:00 > 0:04:01Exactly, exactly.

0:04:01 > 0:04:03So it's not just your normal typical everyday dive,

0:04:03 > 0:04:05it's like something more on top of that.

0:04:05 > 0:04:09Including a lot of interesting artefacts and objects which are more

0:04:09 > 0:04:10than 3000 years old.

0:04:10 > 0:04:13We don't have to go far to find traces of Ohrid's

0:04:13 > 0:04:13ancient history underwater.

0:04:13 > 0:04:17With the water so still and clear, diving here is so relaxing,

0:04:17 > 0:04:19but I almost swim right by without even noticing

0:04:19 > 0:04:24the first artefacts.

0:04:24 > 0:04:26Jovan has to point them out to me.

0:04:26 > 0:04:30But when I look, I see they look like the stumps of trees.

0:04:30 > 0:04:33These are wooden pylons that in a stroke of Bronze Age ingenuity,

0:04:33 > 0:04:36once held up houses built on a platforms over the water.

0:04:36 > 0:04:38In fact, archaeologists have found 6000 remains of these

0:04:38 > 0:04:52wooden pylons in the lake.

0:04:52 > 0:04:56Jovan also points out some other object and it's obvious they aren't

0:04:56 > 0:04:58just the normal debris that you would expect to see

0:04:58 > 0:05:05in the lake bottom.

0:05:05 > 0:05:08This artefact is probably something used to drink from, all right,

0:05:08 > 0:05:11so as you can see there is a really small handle right here,

0:05:12 > 0:05:12ergonomically made, right?

0:05:12 > 0:05:21So judging by this, if you can see...

0:05:21 > 0:05:22Can I hold it?

0:05:22 > 0:05:23Please do, careful.

0:05:23 > 0:05:23Wow.

0:05:23 > 0:05:25You can see some shells around it.

0:05:25 > 0:05:26Still wet from our dive.

0:05:26 > 0:05:28That's the most perfect little handle!

0:05:28 > 0:05:33So, it's kind of interesting to see how they used to do these things.

0:05:33 > 0:05:42You think this would have been a cup to drink out of?

0:05:42 > 0:05:43Most probably, yes, yes.

0:05:43 > 0:05:44Wow.

0:05:44 > 0:05:46And the last one is the stone axe.

0:05:46 > 0:05:47This is the front part.

0:05:47 > 0:05:51You put the stick there or the wooden stick with the handle,

0:05:51 > 0:05:53and there from behind you have the part that

0:05:53 > 0:06:01we've seen underwater.

0:06:01 > 0:06:05As fascinating as it is to discover, and even touch artefacts

0:06:05 > 0:06:07from Ohrid's ancient past, it is still difficult to picture

0:06:07 > 0:06:10what life would have been like here some 3000 years ago.

0:06:10 > 0:06:13This is where this reconstructed Bronze Age settlement comes in.

0:06:13 > 0:06:16Called the Bay of the Bones, the settlement has 24 houses built

0:06:16 > 0:06:18on a wooden platform over the lake.

0:06:18 > 0:06:21Lake Ohrid and the area are considered so special,

0:06:21 > 0:06:24they even have been listed as a world Heritage site by UNESCO.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27And Ohrid has another big draw for visitors around the world, too.

0:06:27 > 0:06:29The annual Ohrid summer festival has hosted musicians,

0:06:29 > 0:06:50actors and singers from more than 60 different countries.

0:06:50 > 0:06:54Our concerts are full and this year we have more than 350 artists

0:06:54 > 0:06:55playing and acting here.

0:06:55 > 0:06:57We have 33 concerts, ballet performances,

0:06:57 > 0:07:04and nine drama shows.

0:07:04 > 0:07:07The venues used for the Ohrid summer festival are all historic sites.

0:07:07 > 0:07:19That includes this ancient Roman amphitheatre.

0:07:19 > 0:07:21We have this marvellous stage also in the amphitheatre,

0:07:21 > 0:07:23made 2000 years before our era.

0:07:23 > 0:07:25Is there is something really special about performing

0:07:25 > 0:07:28in an amphitheatre like this or in an 11th century church?

0:07:28 > 0:07:30I think it is because this amphitheatre looks spectacular in

0:07:30 > 0:07:32the night with 3000 visitors here.

0:07:32 > 0:07:34Also every musician is really excited performing.

0:07:34 > 0:07:37Yes, and the acoustic of Saint Sofia is really spectacular.

0:07:37 > 0:07:40I'm sure you will come for some concerts and you will have

0:07:40 > 0:07:51the opportunity to listen.

0:07:51 > 0:07:54Possibly dating all the way back to the ninth century,

0:07:54 > 0:07:57Ohrid's church of Saint Sofia is one of the most important buildings

0:07:57 > 0:07:58in all of Macedonia.

0:07:58 > 0:08:01Today, it's interior is covered with glorious Byzantine frescoes,

0:08:01 > 0:08:17painted between the 11th and 13th centuries.

0:08:17 > 0:08:20I think that Ohrid is an excellent mix between the ancient history

0:08:20 > 0:08:24and culture and the programme we do as a festival, and also the culinary

0:08:24 > 0:08:27and the restaurants and the good food and the good nightlife.

0:08:27 > 0:08:30I think that everything is important to have a good

0:08:30 > 0:08:47offer for the tourists.

0:08:47 > 0:08:50On a night like this, when a pianist is performing

0:08:50 > 0:08:52here for the festival, the combination of Ohrid's history,

0:08:52 > 0:08:54art and music is intoxicating.

0:08:54 > 0:08:57It is easy to see why locals are hopeful that more and more

0:08:57 > 0:08:59visitors will fall in love with this area and its history.

0:09:00 > 0:09:03Next on the Travel Show, let's take another trip back in time,

0:09:03 > 0:09:07to get a taste of a dish made for one of the most

0:09:07 > 0:09:12notorious of kings.

0:09:12 > 0:09:15My name's Andrew Chan, I'm the head chef at Thornbury Castle

0:09:15 > 0:09:20in South Gloucestershire.

0:09:20 > 0:09:23Thornbury Castle's famous for Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn.

0:09:23 > 0:09:24They came here for their honeymoon.

0:09:24 > 0:09:27Today I'll be trying to replicate a dish they would have

0:09:27 > 0:09:28eaten at that time.

0:09:28 > 0:09:32I'm going to prepare a dish that could have been had in Tudor times.

0:09:32 > 0:09:34It's South Gloucestershire pork cheek with black pudding bonbon,

0:09:34 > 0:09:37some vegetables and sage.

0:09:37 > 0:09:38This is Gloucester pork.

0:09:38 > 0:09:39You have the pork cheek.

0:09:39 > 0:09:41The only meat we're going to take out initially is the cheek.

0:09:47 > 0:09:53What I'm going to do now is season that.

0:09:53 > 0:10:04Get it into the pan and get some nice caramelisation on it.

0:10:04 > 0:10:07In Tudor times the food was homely and very moreish.

0:10:07 > 0:10:09So they would have grown their potatoes, their carrots,

0:10:09 > 0:10:23their swedes, their parsnips.

0:10:24 > 0:10:26You get natural sweetness out of the vegetables.

0:10:26 > 0:10:27And some red wine.

0:10:27 > 0:10:28Pour some red wine in.

0:10:28 > 0:10:37Just plain beef stock.

0:10:37 > 0:10:39Going to pour it so it covers the whole dish.

0:10:39 > 0:10:42Leave it there for like two hours, give or take.

0:10:42 > 0:10:50I'm making the bonbon.

0:10:50 > 0:10:52You have your flour, your eggs, your breadcrumbs.

0:10:52 > 0:10:57We have our mix so I'm going to make the mix now for you so I'm

0:10:57 > 0:10:59going to show you the black pudding.

0:10:59 > 0:11:01Put it into a mixing bowl.

0:11:01 > 0:11:04So from the pork stock you cook your pork cheek.

0:11:04 > 0:11:05We keep the sauce.

0:11:05 > 0:11:06That's all left over.

0:11:06 > 0:11:08Reduce it down so it becomes quite sauce consistency.

0:11:08 > 0:11:10Put a tiny amount in.

0:11:10 > 0:11:11Just mix it up into a paste.

0:11:11 > 0:11:13So it's easy enough to mould.

0:11:13 > 0:11:15Just put them in gently.

0:11:15 > 0:11:19And all we're going to do is cook these for about a minute so we get

0:11:19 > 0:11:28a nice golden colour on them.

0:11:28 > 0:11:31Put the apple sauce, the vegetables, black pudding bonbon,

0:11:31 > 0:11:34South Gloucestershire pork cheek and you finish off with a nice

0:11:34 > 0:11:35little bit of sage.

0:11:35 > 0:11:35And pork broth.

0:11:44 > 0:11:57Still to come here on this week's Travel Show...

0:11:57 > 0:11:59Still to come here on this week's Travel Show...

0:11:59 > 0:12:02We're taking someone else's seat in first class.

0:12:02 > 0:12:04If someone finds me in an airport and says,

0:12:04 > 0:12:07hey, catch me if you can, yes, I will switch seats with you.

0:12:08 > 0:12:11You can take my first or business class seat and I'll go back

0:12:11 > 0:12:13to wherever you were sitting.

0:12:13 > 0:12:15And we're baring almost all in the name of body art.

0:12:15 > 0:12:19You are not only going to attract more people looking at you,

0:12:19 > 0:12:22you will also help the wearer to have a better self-confidence.

0:12:22 > 0:12:24So don't go away.

0:12:24 > 0:12:28The Travel Show, your essential guide to wherever you're heading.

0:12:33 > 0:12:36Time now for Trending Travel, your monthly mash up of the best

0:12:36 > 0:12:42travel related stories, snacks and videos online.

0:12:42 > 0:12:44First-class flying is a luxury few of us can afford.

0:12:45 > 0:12:48But if you see this man at the airport, you could be

0:12:48 > 0:12:50in for a free upgrade.

0:12:50 > 0:12:53His name is Gilbert Ott and he's a travel blogger offering

0:12:53 > 0:12:57money-saving tips on air travel.

0:12:57 > 0:13:00He's claimed he will trade his first class or business class seat

0:13:00 > 0:13:03to anyone who spots him before a flight.

0:13:03 > 0:13:06If someone finds me at an airport maybe the check-in, the security

0:13:06 > 0:13:08lane, you know, duty-free, getting some food or even

0:13:08 > 0:13:12the boarding gate, and they say, hey, catch me if you can,

0:13:12 > 0:13:14you're that guy, Gilbert?

0:13:14 > 0:13:16Yes, I will switch seats with you.

0:13:16 > 0:13:19You can take my first business class seats and I'll go back

0:13:19 > 0:13:20to wherever you're sitting.

0:13:20 > 0:13:23The key here is they find me before I'm on the plane.

0:13:23 > 0:13:26Because once I'm on the plane, that seat is mine.

0:13:26 > 0:13:28You can keep up-to-date with Gilbert's Twitter feed

0:13:28 > 0:13:31where he'll post hints on where you're likely to catch him

0:13:31 > 0:13:33around the world.

0:13:33 > 0:13:36The next generation of lunar robots explored a more earthbound

0:13:36 > 0:13:37location last month.

0:13:37 > 0:13:41Researchers travelled to Mount Etna, Europe's most active volcano to test

0:13:41 > 0:13:45the machines for project XXX, the robotic exploration

0:13:45 > 0:13:49of extreme environments.

0:13:49 > 0:13:51Etna's rocky terrain is similar to the moon's.

0:13:51 > 0:13:55And like the moon's it's also prone to earthquakes.

0:13:55 > 0:13:58It is hoped the robots will monitor these lunar quakes and answer

0:13:58 > 0:14:06questions about the moon's core.

0:14:06 > 0:14:09Closer to home, robots are also helping out passengers at Charles de

0:14:10 > 0:14:13Gaulle airport where a robot valet called Stan parks your car

0:14:13 > 0:14:14after you've dropped it off.

0:14:14 > 0:14:17It then monitors your flight on the way back and has your car

0:14:17 > 0:14:19ready for you on your return.

0:14:19 > 0:14:22If the prototype is a success, stand's makers claim this automated

0:14:22 > 0:14:24procedure will also maximise space in overcrowded car parks.

0:14:24 > 0:14:27And if you are struggling to find your next holiday

0:14:27 > 0:14:32destination, you might want to leave it to the team at SRPRS Me.

0:14:32 > 0:14:36This Dutch company has recently launched in the UK and for a fee,

0:14:36 > 0:14:39they claim they'll book you a mystery break

0:14:39 > 0:14:44with the destination kept secret until you reach the airport.

0:14:44 > 0:14:47Faced with a choice between city break and backpacking adventure,

0:14:47 > 0:14:51you're given only the barest idea of what to pack for.

0:14:51 > 0:14:54And of course, there's always the risk you could end up

0:14:54 > 0:14:58going somewhere you've been before.

0:14:58 > 0:15:01Thanks to everyone who's sent us their pictures this month,

0:15:01 > 0:15:02using the hashtag Travel Tuesday.

0:15:02 > 0:15:06Here are some of my favourites.

0:15:06 > 0:15:10Karl visited Norfolk in the UK when he took this photo

0:15:10 > 0:15:14of a beautifully lit woodland trail.

0:15:14 > 0:15:17And Kyle has snapped this sunset image of the Disney springs

0:15:17 > 0:15:19in Orlando, Florida.

0:15:19 > 0:15:22Don't forget to check out our Twitter and Facebook feeds

0:15:22 > 0:15:26for extra special Travel Show content.

0:15:26 > 0:15:31Now let's look at the travel videos clocking up reviews online.

0:15:31 > 0:15:33One country which has seen record-breaking numbers of tourists

0:15:33 > 0:15:36in the last year is Morocco with over 10 million

0:15:36 > 0:15:40visitors in 2016.

0:15:40 > 0:15:44So we've selected a couple of films which show the country at its best

0:15:44 > 0:15:52that you can also check out online.

0:15:52 > 0:15:55The film Morocco was not a kind of preconceived plan.

0:15:55 > 0:15:58It was the result of the month of travel across the country

0:15:58 > 0:16:01that my wife and I did for our travel blog.

0:16:01 > 0:16:04This film was made using just one camera at the absolute minimum.

0:16:04 > 0:16:06I find people to be less intimidated.

0:16:06 > 0:16:09When you come in with the crew and large production,

0:16:09 > 0:16:10it just changes the environment.

0:16:10 > 0:16:12Although the film shows you some beautiful imagery,

0:16:12 > 0:16:17it's really nothing compared to experiencing it yourself.

0:16:17 > 0:16:19Don't forget to get in touch.

0:16:19 > 0:16:21It's @BBC Travel Show.

0:16:26 > 0:16:29A couple of years ago on the Travel Show, I had a preview

0:16:29 > 0:16:32of the massive new National Art Gallery in Singapore.

0:16:32 > 0:16:41So what are we looking at here?

0:16:41 > 0:16:45We are looking at a work by Japanese artist who was born

0:16:45 > 0:16:46in an aristocratic family.

0:16:46 > 0:16:48It's very visceral with that tiger scowling at us.

0:16:48 > 0:16:51Well, now we're taking a look at a very different kind

0:16:51 > 0:16:56of Singapore art.

0:17:10 > 0:17:13You know, it's rare that a lot of our local tattoo community comes

0:17:14 > 0:17:18together, congregated in one area in one spot.

0:17:18 > 0:17:20These are very talented individuals and, you know,

0:17:20 > 0:17:27it's art, and it's beautiful art at that.

0:17:29 > 0:17:33I guess I'm one of the most well-known tattooists in the world.

0:17:33 > 0:17:36I've been travelling for about ten years now,

0:17:36 > 0:17:40tattooing just anybody that I can.

0:17:40 > 0:17:41It's so intimate.

0:17:41 > 0:17:44Tattooing is really intimate, because you're dealing with touching

0:17:44 > 0:17:47people and it is one-on-one for so long, it's just

0:17:47 > 0:17:52an intimate thing.

0:17:57 > 0:18:00It's overwhelming getting a lot of attention, you know what I mean?

0:18:00 > 0:18:04It's hard to focus because I just want to create good art.

0:18:04 > 0:18:07Super grateful but it's hard.

0:18:07 > 0:18:09What I've noticed about Singapore in general, it's not

0:18:09 > 0:18:12very heavily tattooed.

0:18:12 > 0:18:16But walking around the streets, I didn't see a lot of tattoos

0:18:16 > 0:18:19on lower limbs where you can see it, or necks and faces and stuff.

0:18:20 > 0:18:23So that was really interesting because everywhere I go everyone

0:18:24 > 0:18:29is really heavily tattooed.

0:18:33 > 0:18:36This is a very significant event for the tattooing community,

0:18:36 > 0:18:40especially in Singapore.

0:18:40 > 0:18:44We've come up from an era of back in the day where tattoos might have

0:18:44 > 0:18:46had a bit of negative connotation.

0:18:46 > 0:18:49There are still a few barriers and the stigma

0:18:49 > 0:18:54is still kind of there.

0:18:54 > 0:18:56So doing an event like this is really just trying

0:18:56 > 0:19:02to remove all that.

0:19:04 > 0:19:06The people in Singapore associate tattooing with negativity

0:19:06 > 0:19:12like being a triad and mostly bad stuff.

0:19:12 > 0:19:16But now we are opening up, you see all walks of life coming

0:19:16 > 0:19:18in to get a tattoo, bankers, lawyers, doctors, you know.

0:19:18 > 0:19:22People are opening up to it quite a lot more and I think that's

0:19:22 > 0:19:26a good thing.

0:19:32 > 0:19:33Category four.

0:19:33 > 0:19:38$50.

0:19:38 > 0:19:41We are looking for the quality of work.

0:19:46 > 0:19:51The points are given in each individual details.

0:19:51 > 0:19:54For example, for colours, we make sure they are bright

0:19:54 > 0:20:02and solid and the blends are smooth.

0:20:02 > 0:20:05For black and grey, of course we're looking at the design,

0:20:05 > 0:20:08the depth, the detail.

0:20:08 > 0:20:13The individual creation from the artist.

0:20:23 > 0:20:25To me, every single tattoo design is between the client

0:20:25 > 0:20:30and the artist.

0:20:30 > 0:20:34That should be the way that we are looking at it.

0:20:35 > 0:20:38A good tattoo on the individual body, you're not only

0:20:38 > 0:20:40going to attract more people looking at you,

0:20:40 > 0:20:49you will also help the wearer to have a better self-confidence.

0:21:00 > 0:21:03Unfortunately, I have never been satisfied for the things I've done.

0:21:03 > 0:21:07As long as my client likes it, they are happy about it for many

0:21:07 > 0:21:11years, it is fine with me.

0:21:14 > 0:21:17The greatest part of going to conventions is I am able to draw

0:21:17 > 0:21:20tattoos all over the world, my name, and a piece of myself,

0:21:20 > 0:21:23my soul, and it lives there until the person

0:21:23 > 0:21:28passes, you know.

0:21:49 > 0:21:52And that's it for this week's Travel Show, but coming up next

0:21:52 > 0:21:55week: Carmen begins becoming a journey through Japan.

0:21:55 > 0:21:58Tackling the flavours that locals love but visitors might find a bit

0:21:58 > 0:22:13of a challenge.

0:22:13 > 0:22:16A bit like an oyster, really salty but the consistency...

0:22:16 > 0:22:18bleugh!

0:22:18 > 0:22:22Join us next week for that if you can, but if you can't wait

0:22:22 > 0:22:25until then, sign up to our social media feeds.

0:22:25 > 0:22:26The details are on the screen now.

0:22:26 > 0:22:30But from me, Henry Golding, and the rest of the Travel Show team

0:22:30 > 0:22:57here in Singapore, it is goodbye.

0:22:57 > 0:22:57Hello.

0:22:57 > 0:23:00The UK weekend weather coming up in a moment,
