:00:00. > :00:00.June Kelly, BBC News. Thank you for watching. Breakfast is up next at
:00:00. > :00:13.six o'clock. It is going to open up South America
:00:14. > :00:37.to the world. It is not just about Rio.
:00:38. > :00:48.Hello, and welcome to The Travel Show. This week it is coming from
:00:49. > :00:52.the huge world travel market in London. Each year, representatives
:00:53. > :00:57.from all over the globe come here to try to tempt travellers to their
:00:58. > :01:03.shores. With many hosting major events next year I have come to see
:01:04. > :01:08.whether you and I can get a piece of the action. But first, here is what
:01:09. > :01:15.else is coming up on the day's show. Henry heads to the Philippines to
:01:16. > :01:21.immerse himself in art, literally. Ready's if you are and outdoor type
:01:22. > :01:30.the two things you want to be is warm and dry. -- an. We will have
:01:31. > :01:37.some of the latest travel gadgets. And I invite countries from around
:01:38. > :01:44.the world to take part in a special travel show challenged. Two must
:01:45. > :01:51.have items when you go to Brazil... -- Travel Show Challenge. Huge
:01:52. > :01:58.crowds, loud cheers, lively celebrations, and, world-class
:01:59. > :02:02.athlete. There is nothing like the atmosphere of a big global sporting
:02:03. > :02:07.event. Every year, countries and cities around the world get ready to
:02:08. > :02:12.welcome hundreds of thousands of people to their shores and become
:02:13. > :02:17.the focus of attention to millions more watching. They take on the
:02:18. > :02:20.enormous task of transforming themselves by building new venues,
:02:21. > :02:27.hotels, transport, and all-round and the systems. And the pressure is on
:02:28. > :02:32.to be exciting and capable. -- better. For many places it is the
:02:33. > :02:40.biggest opportunity they will ever have to influence perceptions and
:02:41. > :02:46.attract the wrest. -- tourists. Brazil, Rio de Janeiro is putting
:02:47. > :02:53.themselves on the global stage to get ready to host the Olympic Games.
:02:54. > :03:00.A very exciting time. But also very nerve-racking. Seeing as they are
:03:01. > :03:04.representatives from every country RBS in the world here today, ahead
:03:05. > :03:09.in to find someone who can give me an insight into the buildup of the
:03:10. > :03:19.first Olympic and Paralympic games ever to be held in South America. --
:03:20. > :03:27.there are. -- country. It was handed from London to Rio. What has
:03:28. > :03:38.happened and then? It is a big effort to organise a big event. --
:03:39. > :03:47.since. We have the possibility of realising a beautiful experience in
:03:48. > :03:50.Rio. What are the challenges of such a huge event? Convincing people that
:03:51. > :03:56.the Games will reinvent the risen in Brazil. It will be good for the
:03:57. > :04:02.country in general as well. -- tourism. One piece of good news is
:04:03. > :04:07.there are still tickets available for next year's Olympic and
:04:08. > :04:11.Paralympic games in Rio. Events will be held in four main areas of the
:04:12. > :04:16.city but most of the action will take place in this city, which will
:04:17. > :04:24.be home to the Olympic Park. Accommodation is being bought vast,
:04:25. > :04:32.so the advice is to get it will soon. -- bought fast. It could pay
:04:33. > :04:38.to invest in smaller guesthouses. If you are in Rio during the games and
:04:39. > :04:42.don't have a ticket for the event there are still ways to get
:04:43. > :04:49.involved. The city will be a live. The seafront and the parks will be
:04:50. > :04:55.amazing. -- alive. You can watch the Games for free on the big screen.
:04:56. > :05:01.The buzz created during sport is electrifying. It is no secret I am a
:05:02. > :05:08.sports fan. Are half in lucky enough to be a commentator in the
:05:09. > :05:14.Paralympic Games. -- I have been. Is what can bring people together
:05:15. > :05:21.whether they win or lose. But once they go home, what happens then? --
:05:22. > :05:26.Sport can. The hope is to create something more lasting. The
:05:27. > :05:35.facilities built in Athens have largely been left unused as they
:05:36. > :05:39.Games ended in 2004. Though, London, three years on from Olympic and
:05:40. > :05:43.Paralympic mania, most of those special and expensive venues are
:05:44. > :05:48.still being used. But change goes way beyond the bricks and mortar of
:05:49. > :05:54.these venues and the perception of some Olympic cities has transformed
:05:55. > :06:04.immeasurably and as a result more tourists now want to go there.
:06:05. > :06:09.Barcelona was enormous through the Olympics. It was an amazing tourists
:06:10. > :06:12.destinations. Is has transformed the city and it has become one of the
:06:13. > :06:18.leading destinations in Europe now. -- It. Can that be replicated in
:06:19. > :06:26.Rio? My impression of the city is that it is dutiful, amazing, but
:06:27. > :06:31.dangerous. -- beautiful. Yes it has problems with sewage and security,
:06:32. > :06:36.they are working on cleaning that up. They are trying to make the
:06:37. > :06:40.country cleaner and safer. Because they want us to go there for
:06:41. > :06:43.holidays. It will open up up America to the world. And I think that is
:06:44. > :06:54.what it should be about. It is not just about Rio. Come on! Come on!
:06:55. > :06:58.But hosting events like the Olympics is an expensive business and Brazil
:06:59. > :07:05.is likely to spend over $3 billion on the Games. And that is a massive
:07:06. > :07:09.investment for any country. So, aside from world-class sport and one
:07:10. > :07:16.heck of a party, what long-term changes can Rio 2016 ring for
:07:17. > :07:19.Brazil? Crime has been a long-standing issue in many
:07:20. > :07:23.Brazilian city. Much of it is centred in the densely packed and
:07:24. > :07:28.deprived districts known as favelas. In the run-up to next year, there
:07:29. > :07:36.has been a concerted effort to clean up many of these areas, dried out
:07:37. > :07:44.crime, and improve living situations. -- drive. Tourists are
:07:45. > :07:50.being guided to these guesthouses. Rio has also taken steps to resolve
:07:51. > :07:53.the sewage that pollutes its world-famous beaches and coastline.
:07:54. > :07:58.If the cleanup is successful, it will be a major improvement to Rio
:07:59. > :08:12.hours infrastructure and image, providing cleaner and safer areas
:08:13. > :08:24.for tourists and wildlife. -- Rio's. MUSIC. It feels like a proper party
:08:25. > :08:29.atmosphere here. There are so many inspiring things that can come from
:08:30. > :08:34.sport. I remember when my basketball team won that runs medal back in at
:08:35. > :08:40.the end 2004. It was amazing. -- Athens,. The sense of pride and
:08:41. > :08:44.achievement was out of this world. If you are lucky enough to get a
:08:45. > :08:47.ticket you are in for a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and
:08:48. > :08:50.maybe even witness a city embarking on any legacy, beginning in awesome
:08:51. > :09:09.style. -- a new legacy. SYNTH MUSIC. I'm trying to get as
:09:10. > :09:15.many countries as possible to take The Travel Show challenge. Is your
:09:16. > :09:27.nation are correct? Ready? Yeah. Yeah. Go! What a must have items
:09:28. > :09:33.when you go to London? Denmark, are you ready? How many visitors go to
:09:34. > :09:42.Denmark's 20 million. When you go to Kenya? A big suitcase. When you go
:09:43. > :09:54.to Brazil. A suitcase. Panama. Number of visitors? 29 million. Two
:09:55. > :10:05.useful phrases. Umm... Two useful phrases... Sorry? Useful items in
:10:06. > :10:15.Indonesia? I don't know. How many visitors? 37 million? New York City?
:10:16. > :10:29.Forget about it. Best kept secret in Sri Lanka. I don't know. El gem?
:10:30. > :10:36.Year. -- Oman. -- Beer. Oh! You've got it! Five from five! It is time
:10:37. > :10:46.to find out what else is making news in the world of travel this week.
:10:47. > :10:49.Here is your update. In Egypt, the pyramids of Giza have revealed
:10:50. > :10:55.mysterious heat spots which scientists describe as thermal
:10:56. > :11:01.anomalies. This discovery comes as experts search for suspected hidden
:11:02. > :11:07.chambers. From one pyramid to another... In Shanghai, China, a
:11:08. > :11:12.team of 200 people from Barcelona came to form a traditional Catalan
:11:13. > :11:17.human pyramid, the height of the 2-storey building. The event was
:11:18. > :11:22.part of the first Barcelona Catalunya culture week in Shanghai
:11:23. > :11:28.and marks the 15th anniversary of ties between the two cities. --
:11:29. > :11:34.Catalonia. And finally, it was with great sadness that people around the
:11:35. > :11:39.globe will and the attacks of Paris. -- followed. Many of the landmarks
:11:40. > :11:43.around the world were lit up in French colours in a show of
:11:44. > :11:49.solidarity and mourning for those killed. We finish this week's Travel
:11:50. > :12:01.Update with some of the striking images. SAD MUSIC PLAYS.
:12:02. > :12:03.Stay with us, because still to come on The Travel Show:
:12:04. > :12:06.We head to the Philippines to see art recreating life
:12:07. > :12:31.The Travel Show - your essential guide, wherever you're heading.
:12:32. > :12:33.We're kicking things off this week with this -
:12:34. > :12:36.it's a compact electronic micro scooter, which the makers claim is
:12:37. > :12:39.a world first because it uses sensors to detect my motion,
:12:40. > :12:47.The e-micro one weighs in at 7.5 kilograms.
:12:48. > :12:49.It takes about an hour to fully charge this bad
:12:50. > :12:57.There are three different ride settings - eco, standard,
:12:58. > :13:16.On smooth ground this is lovely, but as soon
:13:17. > :13:20.as you get an uneven surface, it can be a little bit jarring.
:13:21. > :13:23.You would think for this kind of money there would be some kind
:13:24. > :13:33.of suspension that was built into the wheels.
:13:34. > :13:36.It is quite lightweight but not enough to be travel friendly, but
:13:37. > :13:40.really easy to master, and once you get going it as a whole lot of fun.
:13:41. > :13:46.If you're an outdoorsy type, the two things you will want to be
:13:47. > :13:49.are warm and dry, and the makers of this sleeping bag
:13:50. > :13:57.Because it is filled with a special treated down.
:13:58. > :13:59.The Rab Neutrino Endurance 600 - it's quite
:14:00. > :14:01.an unusual sleeping bag because it's supposed to be waterproof.
:14:02. > :14:16.The inside has a special hydrophobic dam, which its makers claim keeps it
:14:17. > :14:18.resistant to damp and wet conditions, but it's not cheap.
:14:19. > :14:21.It is definitely very snug in here, but it is not raining
:14:22. > :14:25.so there is no real way of testing whether it is waterproof or not.
:14:26. > :14:36.A cold wintry evening shouldn't stop you from enjoying a nice chilled
:14:37. > :14:39.drink, but if you want to protect your fingers from the elements,
:14:40. > :14:42.The Hanskie is the original drinking mitten.
:14:43. > :14:45.Its makers claim it allows you to enjoy your favourite can or bottle
:14:46. > :14:52.in cold weather without sacrificing warmth or grip ability.
:14:53. > :14:55.OK, so there is no real technological element to this.
:14:56. > :14:59.I mean, there is not even any kind of lining on the
:15:00. > :15:02.inside that can keep the drink cold while keeping your hand warm.
:15:03. > :15:06.But it would make for a nice novelty gift for that person that's always
:15:07. > :15:26.OK, come on, admit it - hands up if you're a little bit lazy.
:15:27. > :15:31.If you're the kind of person that can't be bothered to take all
:15:32. > :15:35.your stuff out of the suitcase and hang it nicely on the shelves or in
:15:36. > :15:38.This is the ultimate lazy person suitcase,
:15:39. > :15:42.The ShelfPack has four shelves, which allows you to pack your
:15:43. > :15:46.clothes and then stack them for when you arrive at your destination.
:15:47. > :15:50.It has got a number of front pockets where you can keep
:15:51. > :15:52.other belongings, and it seems like a really good idea,
:15:53. > :15:58.but it is quite pricey and it is not the most stylish of suitcases.
:15:59. > :16:02.Yes, I know - it is a little bit geeky, but I am a gadget guy and I
:16:03. > :16:06.Having the shelves inside does limit the space that
:16:07. > :16:09.would normally be available in a case of this size, and it does
:16:10. > :16:12.make it a little bit heavy, but think of the time you will save.
:16:13. > :16:15.It allows you just to put your case down and get
:16:16. > :16:18.on with your business meetings, or enjoy your holiday, which is
:16:19. > :16:31.Finally, this week we head to Manila in the Philippines.
:16:32. > :16:33.The city is probably more associated with traffic jams and crowded
:16:34. > :16:38.But a new attraction is setting out to try to change that,
:16:39. > :16:47.and get tourists more involved in works of art - literally.
:16:48. > :16:56.London's National Gallery, the Louvre in Paris and
:16:57. > :17:00.These galleries house some of the most famous and valuable paintings
:17:01. > :17:03.in the world, attracting millions of people who come to contemplate and
:17:04. > :17:18.But what if you want to go home with some photos of your visit?
:17:19. > :17:21.Well, with these and other galleries either banning or reviewing
:17:22. > :17:26.their policy on selfie sticks and other forms of photography, you
:17:27. > :17:31.But here in Manila there is one gallery that
:17:32. > :17:34.They want you to interact with the art.
:17:35. > :17:37.If this was a real van Gogh painting, you wouldn't be allowed
:17:38. > :17:46.But in this case, you can actually be a part of the painting.
:17:47. > :17:49.The Art In Island museum is Asia's largest gallery dedicated to 3-D
:17:50. > :17:55.The two-storey building houses some 200 paintings -
:17:56. > :18:00.from man eating animals to masterpieces with a twist.
:18:01. > :18:12.How long did it take you to paint this one?
:18:13. > :18:18.Margaret is one of the resident painters in the gallery.
:18:19. > :18:20.The pictures are all carefully designed with cameras in mind.
:18:21. > :18:49.This is the photo point, so these are quite critical
:18:50. > :19:06.OK, you take a photo of me here then.
:19:07. > :19:17.So, you are kind of forced to do something silly.
:19:18. > :19:22.You kind of want to be a part of the picture.
:19:23. > :19:26.The approach is is paying off, attracting thousands
:19:27. > :19:33.To be honest, I hate going to a machine because it is boring.
:19:34. > :19:36.But this is a different kind of machine because I can take pictures.
:19:37. > :19:38.These types of museums aren't for everybody.
:19:39. > :19:41.It is very loud and you're constantly having to
:19:42. > :19:45.You use your imagination whilst walking around,
:19:46. > :19:59.You must know exactly all the best points to do the selfies.
:20:00. > :20:04.The people behind the gallery say the exhibition is a direct
:20:05. > :20:12.But the real success is what people are doing with the photos.
:20:13. > :20:15.Our marketing is more on the social media side and word-of-mouth.
:20:16. > :20:18.The audience get excited when they see the pictures of other
:20:19. > :20:27.The exhibition is constantly being refreshed, with new designs
:20:28. > :20:39.So I have got a chance to see how it is done.
:20:40. > :20:42.I've got this sort of red here, where should I be going?
:20:43. > :20:51.I'm totally going to ruin your masterpiece here, by the way!
:20:52. > :21:11.Maybe a few thousand more hours of practice.
:21:12. > :21:15.It is fair to say that this gallery would not be the choice
:21:16. > :21:18.of serious art lovers, but what you do get here is a lot of fun.
:21:19. > :21:22.And where else would you get the chance to get up close and personal
:21:23. > :21:27.Henry getting his head around 3-D art in the Philippines.
:21:28. > :21:30.Well, I'm afraid that is it from us for this week.
:21:31. > :21:35.Rajan sets off to travel through a country with a fiercesome
:21:36. > :21:44.From the Siberian border to the Gobi Desert.
:21:45. > :21:47.He finds out why Mongolia is known for being home to some of
:21:48. > :22:00.But the guy before has dislocated his arm, which is a bit freaky.
:22:01. > :22:07.But in the meantime, don't forget you can follow us on social media.
:22:08. > :22:11.You know what to do by now and if you don't, check out the details
:22:12. > :22:17.You can follow us in real time on our travels.
:22:18. > :22:22.Until the next time, from me, Ade Adepitan, and everyone else here on
