0:00:02 > 0:00:03Using one of these in the Caribbean

0:00:03 > 0:00:05is the ultimate watersports experience.

0:00:08 > 0:00:10But on one island,

0:00:10 > 0:00:14you might be surprised how difficult it is to actually hire one.

0:00:39 > 0:00:43Coming up on this week's show, we head to Jamaica to check out

0:00:43 > 0:00:47why new jet ski regulations are causing confusion.

0:00:47 > 0:00:50We can go somewhere else and jet ski and do anything we want.

0:00:50 > 0:00:52They got rid of one of our recreational activities

0:00:52 > 0:00:54on the bucket list here, you know.

0:00:55 > 0:00:58We set out to navigate the frozen seas

0:00:58 > 0:01:01through the Northwest Passage in Arctic Canada.

0:01:01 > 0:01:06If you look at the historical expeditions through this area,

0:01:06 > 0:01:09a lot of ships have been lost out here.

0:01:09 > 0:01:13We take you on a 60-second stopover in Shanghai.

0:01:13 > 0:01:16And join me for the very latest in what's trending in the world of

0:01:16 > 0:01:21online travel, social media, viral videos and amazing apps.

0:01:26 > 0:01:29Hello and welcome to the travel show with me, Ade Adepitan,

0:01:29 > 0:01:32this week coming from Ocho Rios in Jamaica.

0:01:32 > 0:01:36And when you see such a beautiful ocean, it's no surprise that

0:01:36 > 0:01:38so many people want to come here to enjoy it.

0:01:42 > 0:01:46Now new regulations are in place to govern the operators

0:01:46 > 0:01:48who hire jet skis out to tourists here.

0:01:48 > 0:01:51But what's the best way to ensure you stay safe

0:01:51 > 0:01:53when you take a jet ski out on the water,

0:01:53 > 0:01:55wherever you are in the world?

0:02:03 > 0:02:07The island of Jamaica is hugely popular with holiday-makers.

0:02:07 > 0:02:10In fact, the numbers who visit each year

0:02:10 > 0:02:13almost outweighs the three million who actually live here.

0:02:18 > 0:02:20They come for the music.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23This is the birthplace of reggae, after all.

0:02:23 > 0:02:26And is also home to the fastest man on Earth, Usain Bolt.

0:02:29 > 0:02:32Then there's the food and the pristine white sandy beaches.

0:02:32 > 0:02:36And plenty to do for avid watersport fans

0:02:36 > 0:02:38like myself, with these - jet skis.

0:02:42 > 0:02:45So this here, that's connected to your wrist. That's the kill switch.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47It's connected to the bike.

0:02:47 > 0:02:49Without this on it, the bike won't be able to start.

0:02:49 > 0:02:52So as soon as you fall off the bike, this comes out and the engine stops?

0:02:52 > 0:02:55- Exactly. - And what sort of speed does this go?

0:02:55 > 0:02:58- It goes like 40, you know what I mean?- 40! That's cool.

0:02:58 > 0:03:00So I'm going to get out with you now,

0:03:00 > 0:03:04- make sure you have an understanding of how to properly use it.- OK.

0:03:04 > 0:03:06To start, press the green button.

0:03:06 > 0:03:08Also to make sure that I bring it back, I suppose!

0:03:08 > 0:03:10- Nice and easy going out.- OK.

0:03:29 > 0:03:33'Now I've had my safety briefing, it's time to go it alone.'

0:03:33 > 0:03:34It is a lot of fun.

0:03:34 > 0:03:38I mean, the real temptation, because you've got so much power, is that you want to accelerate off.

0:03:38 > 0:03:42But that's probably not the right thing to do.

0:03:42 > 0:03:44But I can see myself enjoying this a lot.

0:03:44 > 0:03:47See you later! Whoo!

0:03:47 > 0:03:51MUSIC: "Sing" by Ed Sheeran

0:03:56 > 0:03:58While I'm on the water, the police arrive,

0:03:58 > 0:04:00and I'm told to return to the beach.

0:04:02 > 0:04:06'Demar explains that there's been lots of confusion over new rules

0:04:06 > 0:04:09'that have been placed on jet ski operators here.'

0:04:09 > 0:04:11Why did this happen?

0:04:11 > 0:04:13Basically what caused us to shut down,

0:04:13 > 0:04:14there was an accident in Negril.

0:04:14 > 0:04:17A tourist was swimming outside of the swimming zone,

0:04:17 > 0:04:23a jet ski was coming, the guy bounced him and they shut down all jet skis.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27Tourists can pay anything up to 100 US dollars an hour

0:04:27 > 0:04:28to hire a jet ski.

0:04:28 > 0:04:33And it's a very lucrative business for some locals.

0:04:33 > 0:04:35But to the surprise of these visitors,

0:04:35 > 0:04:40jet ski activities are off-limits on this beach in Ocho Rios.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43We can go somewhere else and jet ski and do anything we want.

0:04:43 > 0:04:45They got rid of one of our recreational activities

0:04:45 > 0:04:48on the bucket list here, you know?

0:04:48 > 0:04:52Following three tragic accidents in the space of six months,

0:04:52 > 0:04:56the government introduced a ban on the use of jet skis in February.

0:04:57 > 0:05:01Just checking the serial number to make sure it matches with

0:05:01 > 0:05:04the documentation that was submitted to us.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07Authorities said they needed time to re-evaluate the industry,

0:05:07 > 0:05:10which was pretty much unregulated,

0:05:10 > 0:05:15to create a safer environment for both jet skiers and swimmers.

0:05:15 > 0:05:18There are now safe swimming zones which have been introduced

0:05:18 > 0:05:20and strict speed limits.

0:05:20 > 0:05:23I think it will send the right message.

0:05:23 > 0:05:26It will say to visitors to our country that we are keen

0:05:26 > 0:05:28on safety and that, you know, we want them

0:05:28 > 0:05:31to enjoy are beautiful country in the safest manner there is.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34So I think it's actually a positive as opposed to a negative

0:05:34 > 0:05:36as it relates to tourism in our country.

0:05:37 > 0:05:38Go to your left.

0:05:38 > 0:05:42Now every jet ski on the island has to be reregistered

0:05:42 > 0:05:44with the Jamaican Maritime Authority.

0:05:44 > 0:05:48And if the craft is hired by tourists, the owner is also

0:05:48 > 0:05:52required to apply for a permit from the Jamaican Tourist Board.

0:05:54 > 0:05:56And it's not just in Jamaica

0:05:56 > 0:05:59where they've had a crackdown on jet ski safety.

0:05:59 > 0:06:01Places like Hawaii, Mexico and Florida

0:06:01 > 0:06:05have also seen their share of serious accidents.

0:06:05 > 0:06:08Mainly because of carelessness on the part of the driver.

0:06:08 > 0:06:10'It happened here along a stretch of cottages

0:06:10 > 0:06:13'on the east side of Canandaigua Lake.

0:06:13 > 0:06:17'The jet ski accelerated and crashed into the breakwall.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20'New details tonight about two children rushed to

0:06:20 > 0:06:22'the hospital in a helicopter.

0:06:22 > 0:06:25'They were with friends out on the lake when one of them

0:06:25 > 0:06:26'drove a jet ski over the kids.'

0:06:27 > 0:06:31We want to make sure that the industry going forward is

0:06:31 > 0:06:35properly monitored, regulated and insured so that persons who

0:06:35 > 0:06:38do get into that business and continue in that business,

0:06:38 > 0:06:40we have a much steadier

0:06:40 > 0:06:43and much more stable environment for everybody.

0:06:43 > 0:06:45But for some local business owners,

0:06:45 > 0:06:49they claim the hike in insurance premiums now being levied

0:06:49 > 0:06:53on commercial jet ski operators is pushing them out of the industry.

0:06:53 > 0:06:59It's hoped a solution can be found, but the future doesn't look certain.

0:06:59 > 0:07:01Right now, I'm kind of thinking

0:07:01 > 0:07:04whether I should try to go in this or get out of that.

0:07:04 > 0:07:06Because I don't see where it's working.

0:07:12 > 0:07:15If you're planning on using a jet ski anywhere,

0:07:15 > 0:07:17here's some Travel Show tips on how to stay safe.

0:07:17 > 0:07:23MUSIC: "Sure Shot" by Beastie Boys

0:07:23 > 0:07:27If you're a newbie to jet skiing, make sure that you've been shown

0:07:27 > 0:07:29the basics before getting on one of these crafts.

0:07:32 > 0:07:35When renting a jet ski anywhere in the world, make sure

0:07:35 > 0:07:39the owner or company has a valid watersport licence.

0:07:39 > 0:07:43These are normally issued from the local tourist board.

0:07:43 > 0:07:46It means if you're unfortunate enough to have an accident,

0:07:46 > 0:07:48you should be covered by their insurers.

0:07:51 > 0:07:54Virtually no jet skis have running lights.

0:07:54 > 0:07:59Most manufacturers recommend that they only be used during daylight.

0:07:59 > 0:08:01In fact, in many countries,

0:08:01 > 0:08:04there is a ban on the use of jet skis at night-time.

0:08:07 > 0:08:10Make sure you wear a life jacket at all times.

0:08:10 > 0:08:13It's also worth checking the rules because in most places

0:08:13 > 0:08:17there are regulated speed limits, noise limits and distances

0:08:17 > 0:08:21you need to keep from other boats or objects when on the water.

0:08:24 > 0:08:28And finally, most jet ski operators require an adult to be on board

0:08:28 > 0:08:31when a child is operating a jet ski.

0:08:31 > 0:08:34So, sorry, kids - you'll need to be aged 17 and over

0:08:34 > 0:08:37in most countries to ride the waves alone.

0:08:42 > 0:08:44I hope you found that useful.

0:08:44 > 0:08:47Now it's time for your weekly travel update.

0:08:55 > 0:09:00We start this week in Florida at one of its major tourist attractions,

0:09:00 > 0:09:04the marine theme park SeaWorld, who says it will build a bigger tank

0:09:04 > 0:09:05for its killer whales.

0:09:05 > 0:09:08Now, the announcement comes amid some criticism

0:09:08 > 0:09:10of its treatment of the animals.

0:09:10 > 0:09:14The new tank will be completed by 2018 and the company hopes

0:09:14 > 0:09:18it will transform how visitors experience killer whales.

0:09:20 > 0:09:23To Tibet now, and if railway travel is your thing,

0:09:23 > 0:09:27an extension of the world's highest railway line hopes to give

0:09:27 > 0:09:31passengers the chance to see some spectacular scenery.

0:09:31 > 0:09:33The 250km extension

0:09:33 > 0:09:38connects Tibet's two largest cities, Lhasa and Shigatse.

0:09:38 > 0:09:43The new line will cut travel time between the two cities in half

0:09:43 > 0:09:44to just three hours.

0:09:46 > 0:09:49And China is no stranger to puppetry,

0:09:49 > 0:09:52but now one of the world's biggest puppet productions

0:09:52 > 0:09:56created outside of the country is set for the Chinese stages.

0:09:56 > 0:09:58War Horse has been seen by

0:09:58 > 0:10:02six million people in theatres around the world.

0:10:02 > 0:10:05It's due to open in China next year.

0:10:05 > 0:10:07Victoria here.

0:10:07 > 0:10:11You probably picture me as a stout, somewhat sour-faced old woman.

0:10:11 > 0:10:14And finally, ever heard of the talking statue?

0:10:14 > 0:10:17Well, in London and Manchester, they've begun talking.

0:10:17 > 0:10:20If you read my stories, you will never once find me

0:10:20 > 0:10:22wearing a deerstalker hat.

0:10:22 > 0:10:27An innovative art project has users scan codes on the monuments

0:10:27 > 0:10:29using their smartphones.

0:10:29 > 0:10:33The speaking statues then call them back, telling tales of the past,

0:10:33 > 0:10:35voiced by famous actors.

0:10:39 > 0:10:41Still to come on The Travel Show...

0:10:45 > 0:10:49..we've braved the freezing seas of northern Canada

0:10:49 > 0:10:52in search of the legendary Northwest Passage.

0:10:54 > 0:10:57Well, this is really quite something.

0:10:57 > 0:10:59We're in the middle of an Arctic storm.

0:10:59 > 0:11:03The winds are about 55km an hour and the waves ten metres high.

0:12:07 > 0:12:11The Travel Show, your essential guide to wherever you're heading.

0:12:14 > 0:12:16Hi, you're watching Trending Travel,

0:12:16 > 0:12:19our round-up of all that's weird and wonderful in travel-related

0:12:19 > 0:12:23bits and pieces on the web and on social media.

0:12:23 > 0:12:26Let's kick off with some jaw-dropping videos.

0:12:26 > 0:12:29Now, geeks like me love a good infographic.

0:12:29 > 0:12:33And what's even better is an animated infographic, which is

0:12:33 > 0:12:38just what the air traffic control team at NATS has provided me with.

0:12:38 > 0:12:41A really stunning visualisation of air traffic, this.

0:12:41 > 0:12:45We've sped it up a bit, but it's the sheer volume of flights going

0:12:45 > 0:12:49backwards and forwards between Europe and the States that amazed us.

0:12:49 > 0:12:53And also the complicated cluster of routes in the skies above Europe.

0:12:53 > 0:12:55Flashmobs might be so last year,

0:12:55 > 0:12:58but they're still hot in summertime New York.

0:12:58 > 0:13:01So far, over six million people have clicked onto this YouTube clip

0:13:01 > 0:13:03of the cast of The Lion King

0:13:03 > 0:13:06taking their performance underground in the Big Apple.

0:13:06 > 0:13:08MUSIC: "Circle of Life" from The Lion King

0:13:08 > 0:13:12# Ingonyama nengw' enamabala... #

0:13:21 > 0:13:24so let us know if you've seen anything quite as good as that.

0:13:24 > 0:13:28And we'd love to see pictures from your travels too.

0:13:28 > 0:13:31This week, we're after something very specific.

0:13:31 > 0:13:33Your favourite room with a view.

0:13:33 > 0:13:36Sunsets and beaches have dominated your submissions so far,

0:13:36 > 0:13:40though I do like a new view of somewhere familiar too.

0:13:40 > 0:13:43And very nice lateral thinking from Melissa,

0:13:43 > 0:13:45waking above the clouds over Brisbane.

0:13:45 > 0:13:47My own travel highlights

0:13:47 > 0:13:48have been this Shanghai skyline,

0:13:48 > 0:13:51which I've tarted up a bit on my smartphone.

0:13:51 > 0:13:54And check this out from the Maldives.

0:13:54 > 0:13:56Do keep your best coming in.

0:13:56 > 0:14:00Anything quirky we love, and we'll try and show it out next time.

0:14:00 > 0:14:04And don't forget the hashtag BBCTTS.

0:14:04 > 0:14:08That's BBC The Travel Show, in case you hadn't figured it out.

0:14:08 > 0:14:11Don't those hashtags make our lives much easier?

0:14:11 > 0:14:13Time now to have a look at some websites and apps

0:14:13 > 0:14:16which might have crossed your desktop or mobile this month.

0:14:17 > 0:14:19Word Lens is a great concept.

0:14:19 > 0:14:23Hold up your smartphone to something like a street sign or menu

0:14:23 > 0:14:26and watch as it's translated before your eyes.

0:14:26 > 0:14:28It's just been snapped up by Google,

0:14:28 > 0:14:32so expect to see it on Google Glass in the near future.

0:14:32 > 0:14:33It's not always word-perfect,

0:14:33 > 0:14:37and not available in some of the more complicated written languages like

0:14:37 > 0:14:42Japanese, but it might just give you a good idea of what you are ordering.

0:14:42 > 0:14:44At the moment, it's free to download

0:14:44 > 0:14:48but rather sneakily, you have to pay almost 10 for a translation pack.

0:14:50 > 0:14:53Drone photography has really taken off in the travel world.

0:14:53 > 0:14:58These lightweight mini-copters can deliver some stunning perspectives

0:14:58 > 0:15:01and certainly liven up your holiday snaps.

0:15:01 > 0:15:05Diydrones.com is full of information and advice on how to buy

0:15:05 > 0:15:08and even build your own eye on the sky.

0:15:08 > 0:15:11Billed as a social network for anyone interested in UAVs,

0:15:11 > 0:15:14that's unmanned aerial vehicles to you and me,

0:15:14 > 0:15:17here you can sign up to the forums, ask technical and legal questions

0:15:17 > 0:15:20and post and share your airborne efforts.

0:15:20 > 0:15:23If there's any more suggestions you'd like to share,

0:15:23 > 0:15:25here are our contact details once again.

0:15:28 > 0:15:31But before we go, here's what you've been saying

0:15:31 > 0:15:33about The Travel Show recently.

0:15:33 > 0:15:36We had our knuckles rapped by RJ Mendera, who tweeted us

0:15:36 > 0:15:41after seeing Christa helping to make beer at the Catskills Mountains

0:15:41 > 0:15:42of America recently...

0:15:46 > 0:15:49..no such health and hygiene concerns, though, from MK Col,

0:15:49 > 0:15:54who paid us the ultimate accolade in this age of information overload...

0:15:57 > 0:15:59..that's music to the producer's ears here!

0:15:59 > 0:16:03Talking of music, it looks like we've helped Tim Kalyegira find the answer

0:16:03 > 0:16:06to a question that's been bugging him for ten years.

0:16:06 > 0:16:10SYMPHONIC PIECE PLAYS

0:16:14 > 0:16:17Well, Tim, it's a track called Soviet by a band called

0:16:17 > 0:16:20Electronic, on an album of the same name.

0:16:20 > 0:16:22Keep those comments coming

0:16:22 > 0:16:25and we'll do our best to get as many of them on The Travel Show next time.

0:16:25 > 0:16:27See you then.

0:16:31 > 0:16:32Thanks, Carmen.

0:16:32 > 0:16:36Now, to end this week, we are off to the far north of Canada

0:16:36 > 0:16:38where for centuries explorers

0:16:38 > 0:16:41tried to find a sea route that would take them

0:16:41 > 0:16:46from the Atlantic to the Pacific, the legendary Northwest Passage.

0:16:46 > 0:16:49It was 70 years ago that a ship first managed to sail

0:16:49 > 0:16:53the route non-stop through the crushing ice floes that

0:16:53 > 0:16:55blocked the route for much of the year.

0:16:57 > 0:17:01To celebrate their amazing achievement, Karen Bowerman has been

0:17:01 > 0:17:04on a journey to try and recreate that historic first voyage.

0:17:11 > 0:17:13- MAN:- This is true adventure.

0:17:16 > 0:17:20This truly is a journey, start to finish, and it's not a sure thing.

0:17:22 > 0:17:26The challenges of the Northwest Passage...

0:17:26 > 0:17:30For us, it would be ice and there's really nothing we can do about that.

0:17:40 > 0:17:43My journey began at Sisimiut in Greenland,

0:17:43 > 0:17:47a remote settlement at the eastern entrance to the Northwest Passage.

0:17:47 > 0:17:52# Ah, for just one time

0:17:52 > 0:17:56# I would take the Northwest Passage

0:17:56 > 0:17:57# To find... #

0:17:57 > 0:18:00Along the coast from here, explorers set sail,

0:18:00 > 0:18:04into a tangled, ice-packed archipelago of violent weather

0:18:04 > 0:18:06and treacherous seas.

0:18:06 > 0:18:12# And make the Northwest Passage to the sea. #

0:18:12 > 0:18:15They wanted to discover a trade route.

0:18:15 > 0:18:18All I want is to make it through.

0:18:18 > 0:18:20Many people don't.

0:18:21 > 0:18:26Sure enough, it's not long before the passage shows us what it's made of.

0:18:30 > 0:18:35This is really quite something. We are in the middle of an Arctic storm.

0:18:35 > 0:18:40The winds are about 55km an hour and the waves ten metres high.

0:18:56 > 0:18:59And then, after ten hours, the skies clear

0:18:59 > 0:19:01and we enter an icy wonderland.

0:19:11 > 0:19:15There are around 50,000 icebergs in the Northwest Passage,

0:19:15 > 0:19:19all are stunning. But this one takes our breath away.

0:19:19 > 0:19:24It is 3km long and a massive 20 metres above the water.

0:19:24 > 0:19:27It has probably come from the Petermann Glacier.

0:19:27 > 0:19:32The glacier dropped off an iceberg about four times the size

0:19:32 > 0:19:35of Manhattan in 2010, so three years later we are

0:19:35 > 0:19:39still seeing pieces of it floating here in Baffin

0:19:39 > 0:19:42and some of it is probably working its way down to Newfoundland.

0:19:42 > 0:19:45Certainly we are expecting to see icebergs in the area,

0:19:45 > 0:19:48but a big tabular one is a bit of a surprise.

0:19:59 > 0:20:01By day six, we visit Pond Inlet,

0:20:01 > 0:20:04a remote Inuit community on Baffin Island.

0:20:04 > 0:20:07The islanders are hunters and fishermen.

0:20:12 > 0:20:15We eat seal, narwhal,

0:20:15 > 0:20:18walrus, fish, caribou,

0:20:18 > 0:20:21we eat polar bears too.

0:20:21 > 0:20:23And what does polar bear taste like?

0:20:24 > 0:20:30It almost tastes like, you know, those spare ribs without sauce,

0:20:30 > 0:20:34- without the sauce. - Right, spare ribs?- Yes.

0:20:34 > 0:20:37- So when you have polar bear, is that a treat?- Yes.

0:20:38 > 0:20:43Everything that we, the hunters get is a treat.

0:20:44 > 0:20:47- It makes a change from going to the two shops.- Yes.

0:20:52 > 0:20:53Today, it's summer.

0:20:53 > 0:20:57The scenery is spectacular and the islanders can afford to smile

0:20:57 > 0:21:00but a few months from now temperatures will plummet

0:21:00 > 0:21:04and they will have to cope with almost endless nights.

0:21:14 > 0:21:17When my journey continues, I realise life is just as challenging

0:21:17 > 0:21:21for those that live along the passage as it is for us,

0:21:21 > 0:21:23trying to navigate through it.

0:21:30 > 0:21:33Well, that's your lot from The Travel Show this week

0:21:33 > 0:21:34but coming up next week...

0:21:39 > 0:21:42- out of his smartphone. - That's good, keep going.

0:21:42 > 0:21:45Do you mind if I take a photo? Three, two, one.

0:21:50 > 0:21:55And find out if Karen's ship finally reaches the Pacific, or will

0:21:55 > 0:21:58the crushing pack ice bring her voyage to a sudden end?

0:22:02 > 0:22:05That looks good. Make sure you catch it if you can.
