0:00:06 > 0:00:08It's one of New York's most iconic neighbourhoods,

0:00:08 > 0:00:10but its future is in serious doubt.

0:00:12 > 0:00:15On this week's programme, we'll find out why.

0:00:39 > 0:00:43The challenges facing Chinatown - how rising rents

0:00:43 > 0:00:45and relentless development are threatening

0:00:45 > 0:00:48the culture of this Manhattan neighbourhood.

0:00:48 > 0:00:51We drive through the wine tunnels of Moldova.

0:00:52 > 0:00:57In Global Guru this week, where is the ideal South American vacation?

0:00:59 > 0:01:01MUSIC SCREECHES TO A STOP, NEW RECORD BEGINS

0:01:01 > 0:01:04And I'll be learning to be a DJ in the world's first

0:01:04 > 0:01:06underwater nightclub.

0:01:12 > 0:01:17MUSIC: "The Sidewalks Of New York" by Duke Ellington

0:01:35 > 0:01:37Located on the southern tip of Manhattan,

0:01:37 > 0:01:41Chinatown is one of New York's best-known neighbourhoods.

0:01:46 > 0:01:50Hundreds of thousands of migrants have flocked here for centuries,

0:01:50 > 0:01:52hoping to build a new life for themselves.

0:01:55 > 0:01:58This part of New York has been influenced by Chinese culture

0:01:58 > 0:02:00for many years, but things are changing.

0:02:02 > 0:02:05A recent report has thrown up a real concern over the future

0:02:05 > 0:02:11of Chinatown in New York, showing a population decrease of 7% since 1990.

0:02:14 > 0:02:18Much of the blame falls on the recent relaxation of zoning rules -

0:02:18 > 0:02:21rising rent and luxury developments are changing the culture

0:02:21 > 0:02:26of the area, with many Chinese migrants simply priced out.

0:02:26 > 0:02:30And there are also big declines in traditional businesses and tourism.

0:02:30 > 0:02:33I met up with Wellington Chen, the executive director

0:02:33 > 0:02:37of New York's Chinatown Partnership, to find out why.

0:02:37 > 0:02:41So, Wellington, what has happened to Chinatown in New York?

0:02:41 > 0:02:43Chinatown is going through a transitional cycle,

0:02:43 > 0:02:47like many other groups that have preceded us.

0:02:47 > 0:02:50We are trying to adjust to the best we can.

0:02:51 > 0:02:54And do you see less tourists coming, or the business losing...?

0:02:54 > 0:02:58Yes, after the tragedies of September 11th,

0:02:58 > 0:03:02this was part of the frozen zone and it basically pushes...

0:03:02 > 0:03:05It pushed the garment industry over a cliff.

0:03:05 > 0:03:07It was already teetering, you know.

0:03:07 > 0:03:09The garment industry was not competitive in terms

0:03:09 > 0:03:11of the worldwide market

0:03:11 > 0:03:17and so that dispersed a lot of our workers

0:03:17 > 0:03:19to the other boroughs.

0:03:23 > 0:03:27A number of businesses in Chinatown point to the tragedies of 9/11

0:03:27 > 0:03:32as a turning point for the area, with some companies never recovering.

0:03:32 > 0:03:35THEY SPEAK IN CHINESE

0:03:35 > 0:03:39Wilson Tang's family have run the Nom Wah Tea Parlor for over 60 years -

0:03:39 > 0:03:44their proximity to the World Trade Center saw a big decline in business.

0:03:44 > 0:03:47But he's been working hard over the past few years to make

0:03:47 > 0:03:50the restaurant relevant for modern Chinatown.

0:03:50 > 0:03:54When I took over three years ago, it was kind of

0:03:54 > 0:03:57rebuilding the brand and starting from scratch again.

0:03:57 > 0:04:01What have you done to keep this place up,

0:04:01 > 0:04:02keep it up with the times?

0:04:02 > 0:04:05Well, that's a really good question.

0:04:05 > 0:04:11So, three years ago, the one thing I knew was social media

0:04:11 > 0:04:16and you know, everyone had a Facebook page.

0:04:16 > 0:04:19That's really what got the word out.

0:04:19 > 0:04:22If I had to think back on, like, "How did this come about?" -

0:04:22 > 0:04:24it was through Facebook.

0:04:24 > 0:04:25So if you hadn't have been on Facebook

0:04:25 > 0:04:28and through social media, that wouldn't have happened?

0:04:28 > 0:04:32Yes, it would have been like a different game.

0:04:32 > 0:04:35Wilson's restaurant is a great success story for Chinatown,

0:04:35 > 0:04:39but, for many, staying in Manhattan is financially not an option.

0:04:41 > 0:04:44So where are Chinese residents and businesses now?

0:04:44 > 0:04:46And what about new arrivals?

0:04:54 > 0:04:56Well, according to the latest American Census,

0:04:56 > 0:05:01Flushing in Queens has seen a 93% increase in Chinese

0:05:01 > 0:05:03residents during the ten years to 2010,

0:05:03 > 0:05:08whilst Manhattan's Chinatown population was decreasing.

0:05:08 > 0:05:11Packed full of traditional restaurants and small businesses,

0:05:11 > 0:05:14to many, this is now the beating heart

0:05:14 > 0:05:16of the Chinese community in New York.

0:05:16 > 0:05:20So far, though, very few tourists head here.

0:05:20 > 0:05:23But could the promise of authentic food and traditional goods be

0:05:23 > 0:05:28enough to tempt tourists to leave Manhattan and head into Queens?

0:05:28 > 0:05:31If I would have more time - I have just four days in New York -

0:05:31 > 0:05:33of course I would visit Queens and also the Bronx,

0:05:33 > 0:05:36but time is too short.

0:05:36 > 0:05:38Where is Queens? I don't know.

0:05:38 > 0:05:43We only stay at Manhattan, so we go to Chinatown,

0:05:43 > 0:05:47- Central Park, voila, all the tourist things.- Yes, I would.

0:05:47 > 0:05:51But I've never heard about Chinatown in Queens, so...

0:05:51 > 0:05:52but I would be interested.

0:05:55 > 0:05:57Whilst the challenges remain great,

0:05:57 > 0:06:01Wellington insists that residents and businesses alike will work together

0:06:01 > 0:06:06and fight to keep this little part of China in Manhattan alive.

0:06:06 > 0:06:08What's the future of Chinatown?

0:06:08 > 0:06:10I have no doubt, I am an optimist,

0:06:10 > 0:06:15I have no doubt that Chinatown will be here...for a long, long time.

0:06:15 > 0:06:19The question is, really, the degree and success -

0:06:19 > 0:06:21the vibrancy of it.

0:06:21 > 0:06:25And that's something that we are taking very seriously.

0:06:34 > 0:06:37Ade Adepitan in New York's Chinatown.

0:06:37 > 0:06:39And if you're thinking of heading there soon,

0:06:39 > 0:06:43here's a few things you might want to know before you book your trip.

0:06:44 > 0:06:46MUSIC: "Can I Kick It?" by A Tribe Called Quest

0:06:48 > 0:06:51Take a trip to One World Trade Center,

0:06:51 > 0:06:53due to open later this year -

0:06:53 > 0:06:56New York's tallest building will offer unrivalled views

0:06:56 > 0:07:01and serve as a monument to 9/11 for tourists and residents.

0:07:03 > 0:07:07For great sunrise and sunset views, head to Hoboken, New Jersey,

0:07:07 > 0:07:09where you can see a great sweep of Manhattan.

0:07:11 > 0:07:14You ever been in an old-timer gang fight?

0:07:14 > 0:07:17If money is tight, many comedy clubs put on free nights

0:07:17 > 0:07:19when you can see up-and-coming performers.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24Pack your running shoes - on the weekend,

0:07:24 > 0:07:27the Central Park drives are closed to traffic

0:07:27 > 0:07:30and become huge open-air running, biking and skating tracks.

0:07:37 > 0:07:42Let's start this week's travel update with...

0:09:00 > 0:09:02In Moldova, everybody makes wine.

0:09:02 > 0:09:06Ciotca has been making wine since she was 13,

0:09:06 > 0:09:09just like Moldovans have done for more than 4,000 years.

0:09:09 > 0:09:11They've only recently started making GREAT wine.

0:09:11 > 0:09:14I hope and I think we are getting better.

0:09:24 > 0:09:27For decades, the USSR treated Moldova as its personal vineyard,

0:09:27 > 0:09:30at one point, making this tiny nation the seventh-largest

0:09:30 > 0:09:32wine producer on Earth.

0:09:32 > 0:09:33Since Soviet rule,

0:09:33 > 0:09:37state-run Milestii Mici winery sells the world's largest wine collection,

0:09:37 > 0:09:42about 65,000,000 litres in a 200km limestone cave system.

0:09:43 > 0:09:45That you can DRIVE through!

0:09:47 > 0:09:50If you look just in front of us, you see

0:09:50 > 0:09:54- that's a walled door on wheels. This may close and open.- Awesome!

0:09:54 > 0:09:56Of course everything was hidden

0:09:56 > 0:09:59and no-one could realise that something behind the wall.

0:09:59 > 0:10:02'Milestii Mici has a number of hidden treasures.

0:10:02 > 0:10:05'Like this secret door - a throwback to Soviet prohibition

0:10:05 > 0:10:09'from 1985 to 1987, when the government physically

0:10:09 > 0:10:12'destroyed Moldovan vineyards and crippled its wine industry.'

0:10:12 > 0:10:15- This was to hide wine from the government, right?- Yes.

0:10:15 > 0:10:17- But isn't this government-owned? - Yes!

0:10:17 > 0:10:20So the government was hiding wine from the government?

0:10:20 > 0:10:23This is the story, just a legend, of course!

0:10:23 > 0:10:27About 35km south, state-owned winery Cricova holds

0:10:27 > 0:10:29the world's second-largest wine collection.

0:10:29 > 0:10:32It stretches through 120km of tunnels

0:10:32 > 0:10:34and reaches depths of 80m underground.

0:10:42 > 0:10:44Bottles from his collection...

0:10:44 > 0:10:46Can you drink a bottle of Goering's wine?

0:10:46 > 0:10:49- No!- I would get some sort of sick pleasure from that!

0:10:49 > 0:10:51'Despite its wide collection,

0:10:51 > 0:10:55'including private stores for Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor

0:10:55 > 0:10:59'Angela Merkel, Cricova is most famous for its sparkling wine.'

0:11:09 > 0:11:12After experiencing the history of Moldovan wine,

0:11:12 > 0:11:14I was curious to see what its future holds,

0:11:14 > 0:11:16so I headed to the Stefan Voda region,

0:11:16 > 0:11:18and acclaimed boutique winery, Et Cetera.

0:11:18 > 0:11:22We have wine country, but we forgot about our wine...

0:11:23 > 0:11:25..our local indigenous varieties.

0:11:25 > 0:11:30Et Cetera is only the second winery to reintroduce Feteasca Neagra, a local variety

0:11:30 > 0:11:33that disappeared from the Moldovan landscape during Soviet

0:11:33 > 0:11:37control, when quantity of wine was of much bigger concern than quality.

0:11:37 > 0:11:41This is something I would say between Cabernet Sauvignon

0:11:41 > 0:11:42and Merlot.

0:11:42 > 0:11:45To be honest, I don't how it's supposed to be,

0:11:45 > 0:11:49because I never tried the perfect Feteasca Neagra. I would love.

0:11:51 > 0:11:55A Russian ban on Moldovan wine in 2006 forced Moldovan

0:11:55 > 0:11:58wineries like Et Cetera to start making better wines

0:11:58 > 0:11:59for European tastes.

0:11:59 > 0:12:03Another wine embargo from Russia in 2013 has local vineyards

0:12:03 > 0:12:06continuing efforts to improve their product.

0:12:06 > 0:12:08Only those willing to make the journey to Moldova will

0:12:08 > 0:12:11discover the secrets of the world's most unique wine destination.

0:12:17 > 0:12:21MUSIC: "Rock DJ" by Robbie Williams

0:12:21 > 0:12:23Still to come on the programme...

0:12:23 > 0:12:25RECORD SCREECHES TO A STOP

0:12:25 > 0:12:27Do you want to learn that one?

0:12:27 > 0:12:29- How do I do THAT? - OK, let's teach you that one!

0:12:29 > 0:12:32I'll be testing out my DJ skills at an underwater nightclub

0:12:32 > 0:12:34here in the Maldives...

0:12:36 > 0:12:40And what are the real chances of seeing Northern Lights?

0:13:11 > 0:13:12Welcome to the slice of the show

0:13:12 > 0:13:15that tries to make your travelling life easier.

0:13:15 > 0:13:18Let's start with Richard Long, who says...

0:13:28 > 0:13:32Now, if the astonishing hilltop palace complex of Machu Picchu

0:13:32 > 0:13:34is top of your list, then you need

0:13:34 > 0:13:37to get yourself to the ancient Inca capital of Cuzco,

0:13:37 > 0:13:41most easily reached via the Peruvian capital, Lima.

0:13:41 > 0:13:45If you're in reasonable shape, let me recommend the Inca Trail,

0:13:45 > 0:13:49possibly the world's most exciting high altitude hike

0:13:49 > 0:13:53along a pedestrian highway, created six centuries ago.

0:13:53 > 0:13:57It leads you to Machu Picchu, from where you can explore

0:13:57 > 0:14:01the rest of the Sacred Valley, refreshingly free from tourists.

0:14:01 > 0:14:04Now, you might take a glance at the map

0:14:04 > 0:14:07and decide that the beach element can easily be solved by picking somewhere

0:14:07 > 0:14:09on Peru's Pacific coast,

0:14:09 > 0:14:11but I strongly recommend you choose

0:14:11 > 0:14:13the Atlantic instead, for warmer weather

0:14:13 > 0:14:16and a stronger resort culture.

0:14:16 > 0:14:21Next, let's call up Wilson Loo, who's in Singapore at the moment, but

0:14:21 > 0:14:23I understand you're planning something of

0:14:23 > 0:14:25a great railway adventure.

0:14:25 > 0:14:30I am going on the Trans-Siberian Railway from Moscow to Beijing.

0:14:30 > 0:14:32Where should I stop on the way?

0:14:32 > 0:14:35That's much better than going straight through.

0:14:35 > 0:14:37The first essential I suggest

0:14:37 > 0:14:40is Yekaterinburg, which is

0:14:40 > 0:14:42the first city on the Asian side

0:14:42 > 0:14:44of the Ural Mountains.

0:14:44 > 0:14:47Next, Irkutsk, in eastern Siberia,

0:14:47 > 0:14:51is a beautiful city called the Paris of the East

0:14:51 > 0:14:55and gives access to the wonderful Lake Baikal.

0:14:55 > 0:14:58And since it's your best chance, probably,

0:14:58 > 0:14:59of reaching Ulan Bator,

0:14:59 > 0:15:01the capital of Outer Mongolia,

0:15:01 > 0:15:04spend a couple of days there as well

0:15:04 > 0:15:06before you finally reach

0:15:06 > 0:15:09the capital of the People's Republic of China.

0:15:09 > 0:15:11Now, for each edition of Global Guru,

0:15:11 > 0:15:15there always seems to be one subject that stands out in the e-mails,

0:15:15 > 0:15:19tweets and Facebook messages and this time, it's the northern lights.

0:15:26 > 0:15:27Good question, Eleanor,

0:15:27 > 0:15:29and one I've been puzzling over, too.

0:15:29 > 0:15:33Only one way to find out about the chances of seeing the aurora borealis

0:15:33 > 0:15:36and that's to ask the rocket scientists at NASA,

0:15:36 > 0:15:38who know more about space than most of us.

0:15:38 > 0:15:40Jeff Newmark of NASA assured me

0:15:40 > 0:15:42that we are in a good spell,

0:15:42 > 0:15:44which began in 2012

0:15:44 > 0:15:47and will continue this year and next.

0:15:47 > 0:15:48After that, you could wait anything

0:15:48 > 0:15:50up to 11 years, says Jeff.

0:15:50 > 0:15:54Let me add that the northern lights in my experience are fickle in the

0:15:54 > 0:15:59extreme - even if you maximise your chances with a northerly location

0:15:59 > 0:16:03and a long, clear night, there's no guarantee they'll come out to play.

0:16:03 > 0:16:07Finally, Mimi Tanaman got in touch with a very specific question.

0:16:16 > 0:16:19Well, there's an early flight at 5.05 in the morning between these

0:16:19 > 0:16:23two great Pacific Northwest cities which is scheduled to get in

0:16:23 > 0:16:26shortly before six at a fare of around 75.

0:16:26 > 0:16:30Chances are, this would work fine, but if there is a delay,

0:16:30 > 0:16:33you could miss the New York connection and since you'll be

0:16:33 > 0:16:37travelling on separate tickets, that could prove stressful and expensive.

0:16:37 > 0:16:39So I suggest taking the train the night before

0:16:39 > 0:16:43to Seattle's King Street station and in the morning,

0:16:43 > 0:16:46take the first Central Link train out to the airport.

0:16:46 > 0:16:50That's all for now, but if you've got a travel question, I'm here to help.

0:16:50 > 0:16:54Just e-mail TheTravelShow@bbc.com

0:16:54 > 0:16:57and I'll do my very best to find you an answer.

0:16:57 > 0:17:00From me, Simon Calder, the Global Guru,

0:17:00 > 0:17:01bye for now and see you next time.

0:17:05 > 0:17:09MUSIC: "Nothing But The Beat" by David Guetta

0:17:22 > 0:17:24Now, most people come to the Maldives to swim,

0:17:24 > 0:17:27sun themselves and maybe do a bit of snorkelling,

0:17:27 > 0:17:30but at this island resort, you can also learn to become

0:17:30 > 0:17:34a DJ in what is claimed to be the world's first underwater nightclub.

0:17:37 > 0:17:40So this place is called subsix

0:17:40 > 0:17:43because it's six metres underwater in the Indian Ocean.

0:17:43 > 0:17:45Can you hear that?

0:17:45 > 0:17:48That glugging noise? It's like the water lapping against the sides.

0:17:48 > 0:17:52It feels like I'm walking into the belly of a whale.

0:17:52 > 0:17:55MUSIC: "Rock DJ" by Robbie Williams

0:17:55 > 0:17:58But apart from that, it's quite eerie and surreal,

0:17:58 > 0:18:00I can't hear any music.

0:18:00 > 0:18:02I guess it is 11 o'clock in the morning,

0:18:02 > 0:18:04so I don't expect it to be rocking just yet!

0:18:07 > 0:18:10Oh, wow! This is amazing!

0:18:10 > 0:18:11SO James Bond!

0:18:19 > 0:18:22The club was actually constructed on dry land

0:18:22 > 0:18:23and then lowered into the ocean.

0:18:25 > 0:18:28MUSIC: "Blurred Lines" by Robin Thicke

0:18:30 > 0:18:34- Hi.- Hi! You must be Andrew. Carmen.

0:18:34 > 0:18:35So what is it like,

0:18:35 > 0:18:39being a DJ at the world's first underwater music club?

0:18:39 > 0:18:42It's pretty good! Don't have to wear a snorkel, but it's all right.

0:18:42 > 0:18:46# I got, you got We got everybody... #

0:18:46 > 0:18:50OK, this is a kind of off-the-wall thing to learn on holiday...

0:18:50 > 0:18:54Yes, it's not the most expected, like, lesson that you'd do.

0:18:54 > 0:18:56# I'll be quite polite

0:18:56 > 0:18:59# But when I rock the mic I rock the mic right... #

0:18:59 > 0:19:02Wow, well, this looks a bit more complicated than I'd imagined.

0:19:02 > 0:19:05- No, it's fine, don't worry. Shall I walk you through it?- Yes, please.

0:19:05 > 0:19:09- # But if you're selling it - Selling it, selling it
