:00:06. > :00:10.Good evening. Welcome to BBC Channel Islands. Wednesday's

:00:10. > :00:17.headlines: Shape up or ship out. Condor is told it must improve

:00:17. > :00:24.services or lose its permit. Also tonight: Fresh hope for

:00:24. > :00:34.disability and gay rights campaigners.

:00:34. > :00:45.

:00:45. > :00:50.And he's the bee's knees. Find out For good evening. Late arrivals,

:00:50. > :00:53.delays and engine failures. Condor have had a number of technical

:00:53. > :00:59.issues with its bleak recently and has been told it could face losing

:00:59. > :01:09.its permit if services do not improve -- its fleet. For some, the

:01:09. > :01:15.

:01:15. > :01:21.reason delays have been there for hours. There were some people who

:01:21. > :01:27.had tiny little children, and we felt so sorry for them. Those

:01:27. > :01:30.children, they had to wake them up and carried them in. It is not just

:01:30. > :01:38.this woman who is unhappy. At a ferry terminal today, there were

:01:38. > :01:48.plenty more disgruntled customers. Every time I come over, it is the

:01:48. > :01:48.

:01:48. > :01:55.the late or something has gone wrong. -- it is by their late.

:01:55. > :02:00.Today, Jersey's minister who is responsible for the island's ferry,

:02:00. > :02:06.admits the service is not up to standards. There are quite a number

:02:06. > :02:11.of unacceptable delays caused by mechanical issues. There has been a

:02:11. > :02:14.repeat in a recent weekend, and that is not acceptable. Condor says

:02:14. > :02:23.it understands people's frustrations but insists this is

:02:23. > :02:27.doing all it can. We have been spending a lot of money on

:02:27. > :02:31.overhauls. We have had a few issues in the last few weeks, but we're

:02:31. > :02:35.confident we will have a trouble- free summer. There is no direct

:02:35. > :02:38.competition on the route, and Condor has until next year to

:02:38. > :02:45.improve its services. Until then, passengers have no choice but to

:02:45. > :02:49.stay on board. Guernsey is a step closer to

:02:49. > :02:55.introducing Disability discrimination laws. More than 60 %

:02:55. > :02:58.of islanders want greater it in -- protection for employers, so the

:02:58. > :03:04.Commerce and Employment Department is making it a top priority. But

:03:04. > :03:08.changes could still be a long way off. Dania Lloyd used to work for a

:03:08. > :03:12.trust company but had to give it up after a horse-riding accident left

:03:12. > :03:19.her with brain injuries. She now has mobility issues and has

:03:19. > :03:24.struggled to get a job. We would have the interview, and it would go

:03:24. > :03:29.really well, and then I would get a planned walkout. It is not

:03:29. > :03:34.something that is horrendous, but it is something you can see that

:03:34. > :03:38.isn't 100 %. It automatically frightens them. Error via by the

:03:38. > :03:48.Commerce and Employment Department found that more than 60 % of people

:03:48. > :03:51.

:03:51. > :03:54.wanted greater protection for workers -- a review. The chair of

:03:54. > :04:01.Guernsey's Disability Alliance has welcomed the news, but any news --

:04:01. > :04:06.any change in the law is still a way off. It could take several more

:04:06. > :04:10.years before this even comes to the States for a vote. Even then it is

:04:10. > :04:13.not guaranteed. Meantime, this is a global financial centre, and we

:04:13. > :04:19.don't have laws against discrimination against disabled

:04:19. > :04:23.people. Some people find that quite shocking. May is now working as a

:04:23. > :04:26.carer. She says her experience mean she can understand patients better.

:04:26. > :04:33.She hopes new legislation means that employers will give more

:04:33. > :04:36.people like her chance. Now to another complained of

:04:36. > :04:45.discrimination. Currently, gay men are offered -- forbidden from

:04:45. > :04:49.giving blood to the Islands' health services. The living blood is a

:04:49. > :04:55.crucial part of the Islands' health services. But if you're gay man,

:04:55. > :05:01.you're not allowed to do it. One man wants the rules to change.

:05:01. > :05:05.is another form of discrimination in all of the prejudice that we

:05:05. > :05:09.face in our lives. The health department so that they follow the

:05:09. > :05:14.same rules as the UK when it comes to donating blood. It means anybody

:05:14. > :05:19.with HIV or hepatitis cannot donate blood, or anybody who has ever been

:05:19. > :05:24.an intravenous drug user. It also means that any man who has ever had

:05:24. > :05:28.sexual contact with another man also cannot donate blood. It is not

:05:29. > :05:36.a case of discrimination, it is a case off criteria laid down. We are

:05:36. > :05:42.a small jurisdiction, as is Jersey, and we followed the guidelines laid

:05:42. > :05:49.down by the UK blood transfusion services. They advise us on who

:05:49. > :05:54.they consider are appropriate as donors. My argument is that they

:05:54. > :05:59.are homosexual men and women poor in loving monogamous relationships,

:05:59. > :06:05.the same as heterosexual. So why can't those people give blood as

:06:05. > :06:07.well? Until the rules are changed in the UK, this laboratory at a

:06:07. > :06:16.Guernsey's hospital will be processing blood from straight men

:06:16. > :06:20.only. Another issue facing the Islands'

:06:20. > :06:25.homosexual community is the ban on civil partnerships. Same-sex

:06:25. > :06:30.weddings are not legal, but today views have been had by a government

:06:30. > :06:35.committee in Jersey. We went to work -- to meet one month calling

:06:35. > :06:41.for air quality. He eventually proposed on the long denied to me.

:06:41. > :06:45.Stephen Edwards tells me about the love of his life. If he goes away,

:06:45. > :06:52.I go away, we do miss each other. And what emotions does he bring out

:06:52. > :06:56.in new? He annoys me, he frustrates me, he understands me, he calms me.

:06:56. > :07:00.Everything you would accept -- expect from a loving relationship.

:07:00. > :07:05.Stephen is preparing to fight for love. He cannot be legally wed to

:07:05. > :07:11.his fiancee, and -- because the civil partnership law has not been

:07:11. > :07:15.passed in Jersey. He has come across several other gay couples

:07:15. > :07:19.battling for quality. When you go up to somebody and introduce them

:07:19. > :07:23.as your partner, it is different from introducing them as your

:07:23. > :07:27.husband. There's a different social context. It is up to scrutiny to

:07:27. > :07:31.make sure the public has been fully consulted before any decision is

:07:31. > :07:36.made. Stephen Edwards will be asked his opinion about gay marriage in a

:07:36. > :07:40.place of worship in Jersey. The civil law partnership is due to be

:07:40. > :07:44.debated later in the States. Being very close to his fiancee's family,

:07:44. > :07:49.Stephen point out that if the day comes, the couple have already

:07:49. > :07:53.considered how they would like their big day to be. I think of

:07:53. > :07:57.something more akin to a registry marriage, where is he wants more of

:07:57. > :08:04.a party. Whether or not Stephen get his dream wedding remains to be

:08:04. > :08:08.decided. Guernsey Post wants to increase its

:08:08. > :08:18.stamp prices from August. The price of sending a letter to the UK bull

:08:18. > :08:19.

:08:19. > :08:22.rise by 2p to 47 pence. The company still needs permission from the

:08:22. > :08:26.regulator. Job losses are also likely.

:08:26. > :08:31.A former politician will find out next week if he has have won the

:08:31. > :08:38.right to sue Jersey's government. Stuart survey claims he was

:08:38. > :08:43.unfairly dismissed as Health Minister in 2007. He also says that

:08:43. > :08:48.there will servants covered up child abuse. Stuart Syvret a was

:08:48. > :08:51.Health Minister until 2007. He wants to sue the state for what he

:08:51. > :08:57.claims was failing in their duty of care towards him when he was a

:08:57. > :09:07.politician. But SLS -- solicitor acting for the state says that as

:09:07. > :09:12.

:09:12. > :09:15.he is there longer a politician, he cannot sue the state. He now want

:09:15. > :09:22.their review and says there is a problem with the chosen judge

:09:22. > :09:32.Jonathan Sumpton QC, claiming as too many ties with their legal

:09:32. > :09:34.

:09:34. > :09:38.system. We're standing in Court Number to this morning. The man

:09:38. > :09:42.said he had been left bankrupt which had led to increasing

:09:42. > :09:46.problems on is how. The judge said he would not make a decision today,

:09:46. > :09:52.instead that will come on Monday when he would decide on whether

:09:52. > :09:58.their case should be struck out. A decision on a review is yet to be

:09:58. > :10:08.made. Jersey's breeding pedigree is going

:10:08. > :10:09.

:10:09. > :10:18.global. For the first time, a Jersey bull will be bred around the

:10:18. > :10:28.world. This is Bee's Knees. His owners have always thought it, and

:10:28. > :10:35.

:10:35. > :10:39.now it seems he really does have the X factor. He eats huge

:10:39. > :10:49.quantities of grass, brings the milk home and produces a high

:10:49. > :10:54.

:10:54. > :10:58.quality product. His mother has tremendously healthy milk. That is

:10:58. > :11:05.why Bee's Knees has been singled out by bull breeding giant cogent.

:11:05. > :11:12.The company will be selling and marketing his Amen globally. And

:11:12. > :11:22.this is 100 % pure Jersey cards. It is the first time a global breeding

:11:22. > :11:28.

:11:28. > :11:34.company will market the seamen from the pure Ireland bull. -- semen.

:11:34. > :11:38.The response we are getting is lovely. The only hitch is that

:11:38. > :11:40.Bee's Knees has to move to the UK. While it might be the end of a

:11:40. > :11:46.beautiful friendship, his owners believe it will be the beginning of

:11:46. > :11:56.a big future for the Jersey cow across the globe. Which you could

:11:56. > :11:59.

:11:59. > :12:04.say it is the Bee's Knees. Let's see if it's going to rain.

:12:04. > :12:09.Here is the weather. Some welcome rain and the forecast over the

:12:09. > :12:13.coming days, but quite unsettled at generally. We have low pressure in

:12:13. > :12:18.the Atlantic and a number of Whether funds at close by. By

:12:18. > :12:26.lunchtime tomorrow, those by the front starting to move away. --

:12:26. > :12:33.weather fronts. This one will bring some very wet weather as we end the

:12:33. > :12:42.week. This evening and overnight, generally fairly cloudy skies. One

:12:42. > :12:46.or two showers which could be quite heavy tomorrow morning. Tomorrow,

:12:46. > :12:50.perhaps a wet start of the day but those showers through clearing,

:12:50. > :12:53.allowing some lengthy spells of sunshine. Just one or two isolated

:12:53. > :13:02.light showers possible into the afternoon, but generally it is

:13:02. > :13:12.looking dry almost a bath. Top temperatures 18 or 19 -- dry for

:13:12. > :13:36.

:13:36. > :13:44.Here is the out look over the coming days. It is remaining fairly

:13:44. > :13:53.and settled, just a few isolated showers possible tomorrow. On

:13:53. > :14:03.Friday, wet and windy weather. Turning a little quieter into the

:14:03. > :14:09.

:14:09. > :14:13.Tomorrow morning, on BBC Radio Jersey, you can post your questions

:14:14. > :14:18.ahead of the National Trust for Jersey. Listen from 9am with
