:00:09. > :00:14.Welcome to BBC Channel Islands, we are live at Island Games been Isle

:00:14. > :00:18.of Wight where there is only one story in town, Rhodes football team

:00:18. > :00:23.are banned from ugly and violent behaviour in its match against

:00:24. > :00:27.Jersey. And back here, the pilots who say that Jersey's new air-

:00:27. > :00:37.traffic control system is unfit for purpose.

:00:37. > :00:46.

:00:46. > :00:50.Why students like Jack could have Good evening, you join me at the

:00:50. > :00:53.thick of club on Isle of Wight where does behind the Jersey's that

:00:53. > :00:57.all players are warming up for their final group game against

:00:57. > :01:01.Queensland. They are already through to the semi-finals of the

:01:01. > :01:06.competition, so tonight's match could almost be described as a

:01:06. > :01:12.friendly. Last night's game against Rhodes was anything but. Rhodes

:01:12. > :01:17.players clashed with Jessie players, match officials and fans after the

:01:17. > :01:27.final whistle was blown. Two Rhodes players were sent off and eight

:01:27. > :01:29.

:01:29. > :01:34.Images which once again have brought shame on Rhodes football

:01:34. > :01:38.players. The Greek players goaded their Jersey opponents as the took

:01:38. > :01:42.the lead and then the saw two players sent off, the second time

:01:42. > :01:47.in two days that Rhodes were reduced to to nine men by referees.

:01:47. > :01:53.It was the behaviour after the final whistle that appalled many.

:01:53. > :01:58.Today, they aftermath is the meeting with executives of where

:01:58. > :02:05.Rhodes were thrown out and banned for the next two games. They head

:02:05. > :02:12.of their roads Island Games had little defence for his disgraced

:02:12. > :02:18.squad. It does not have to do with it just the game yesterday but the

:02:18. > :02:28.whole history. When we started to compete in 99, we had problems even

:02:28. > :02:29.

:02:29. > :02:39.then. I think at least it was fear. For Jersey's team boss, relief at

:02:39. > :02:44.what amounts to bat six-year ban. cannot lie, it is a big relief. We

:02:44. > :02:50.will meet again, or we would have met again. A couple of years to

:02:50. > :02:56.defuse the situation is good. Rhodes that -- football players

:02:56. > :03:01.have a bad reputation. They have been banned from games in 2005 and

:03:01. > :03:09.2003. Now that Island Games community are looking again at

:03:09. > :03:15.their Rhodes side who have brought the Friendly Games into disrepute.

:03:15. > :03:19.I am joined now by the President of the Jersey Football Association. Do

:03:19. > :03:27.you want to talk me through what you made of Rhodes team behaviour

:03:27. > :03:31.last night? There was against the ethos of Island Games. I think that

:03:31. > :03:37.is why decisions bait and imported were taking in the light of that.

:03:37. > :03:40.In all my years of football, even at professional level, I have not

:03:40. > :03:47.seen behaviour that went on the bounce of what we witnessed last

:03:47. > :03:53.night. One player has been banned indefinitely. The team is out of

:03:53. > :04:00.this competition. It is a hard punishment at the harshest ever

:04:00. > :04:05.dished out. You think it is fair? think it speaks for itself. They

:04:05. > :04:10.had to be under consideration of a ban and I think in terms of their

:04:10. > :04:15.Island Games Executive upholding the ethos of the game and in favour

:04:15. > :04:20.of football, this is not a football issue, it was one particular island.

:04:20. > :04:25.I think the decisions made were very swift and I think it is fear.

:04:25. > :04:30.Do think there might be some difficulties that players that play

:04:30. > :04:33.in different cultures where there might be a more raucous atmosphere.

:04:33. > :04:38.You think women should make concessions? We play around the

:04:38. > :04:43.world but we fully under international rules and the players

:04:43. > :04:47.know what they are doing. They cannot use culture as that. They

:04:47. > :04:51.understand the laws of the game and respect, when it comes down to

:04:51. > :04:57.incidents such as spitting, there is no language or country in which

:04:57. > :05:01.spitting and that sort of behaviour is acceptable at any level. Is it

:05:01. > :05:07.going to puts jersey of their game? How were the players? They are fine,

:05:07. > :05:11.they have moved on. It is not a Jersey situation. We did not make a

:05:11. > :05:16.complaint and were not planning to, actions spoke for themselves. The

:05:16. > :05:20.players are here and are focused on the game tonight and on the semi-

:05:21. > :05:27.final. It has not affected them and no-one was hurt or anything, we

:05:27. > :05:33.have not suffered and we won the game and are in the semi-finals. We

:05:33. > :05:38.can now have a strong team tonight. The team are focused on the game.

:05:38. > :05:48.Thank you very much. Best of luck for Josie tonight. I will have more

:05:48. > :05:49.

:05:49. > :05:55.from island games later on in the Thank you. Good evening. Fewer

:05:55. > :05:58.pilots will come to Jersey because of that island's new multi-million-

:05:58. > :06:01.pound air-traffic control system, that is the message from the

:06:02. > :06:06.Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. They described it as

:06:06. > :06:13.unfit for purpose and said they will fly elsewhere.

:06:13. > :06:18.Keeping watch over our skies 365 days a year. It cost over 11

:06:18. > :06:24.million to make, stands 39 metres hope top and can handle up to 700

:06:24. > :06:27.aircraft. Now, as we approach peak season, new traffic control

:06:27. > :06:32.measures have been introduced. It means aeroplanes like these will

:06:32. > :06:36.have to file their flight plans in advance. Some aircraft owners say

:06:36. > :06:41.restrictions will be bad for business. It is series the going to

:06:41. > :06:45.affect all the three islands because people will not come to

:06:45. > :06:49.this. They do not need to, they can go to France or wherever they want

:06:49. > :06:54.to fly. Pilots will need to register their mood bid on a

:06:55. > :06:59.website or by telephoning air- traffic control. They airport

:06:59. > :07:03.operations manager says the reason is simple. We need to prove we can

:07:03. > :07:09.handle the traffic safely throughout the summer. Once that is

:07:09. > :07:15.proved, and we all know that everybody is comfortable, a traffic

:07:15. > :07:21.can be a handles, then this will go. It is that minor issue. According

:07:21. > :07:24.to Mr Strasser, there has been a strip -- drop in flight numbers

:07:24. > :07:30.over the years and the system should be able to cope with the new

:07:30. > :07:36.rules. We do not need it, we can update it old system so that it can

:07:36. > :07:42.cope with the traffic. The prior permission scheme will last for

:07:42. > :07:46.three months up to the end of September.

:07:46. > :07:51.A 21 mailman has been remanded in custody by Guernsey's magistrates

:07:51. > :07:54.in connection with an alleged stabbing. Francisco da Silva,

:07:54. > :07:58.originally from Venezuela but now living in St Peter Port, is charged

:07:58. > :08:03.with indecent assault and unlawful wounding with intent to cause

:08:03. > :08:07.grievous bodily harm. The charges follow an attack on a 20-year-old

:08:07. > :08:10.man here at the junction of Doyle Road and the Grange early on Sunday

:08:10. > :08:14.morning. Parents in Guernsey do not know how

:08:14. > :08:18.much they will end up paying to send their children to university

:08:18. > :08:25.next year. Government bosses say they do not know how much they will

:08:25. > :08:28.be able to fund students. Jack wants to study medicine at

:08:28. > :08:34.University next year, but at the moment he does not know if his

:08:34. > :08:37.dreams are out of reach. I am currently going to open days and

:08:37. > :08:42.clicking around universities and filling out application form. This

:08:42. > :08:47.is happening right now and I have no idea what the situation will be

:08:47. > :08:51.next year. It is quite difficult for me to make a decision. Jack's

:08:51. > :08:55.equations are academic. His father will have to do the difficult maths.

:08:55. > :08:59.With no guarantee from the state of the the level of funding for pupils

:08:59. > :09:07.next year, he is in the dark as to whether he will be able to afford

:09:07. > :09:11.to send his son. People have got to apply by 15th October. I think the

:09:11. > :09:14.consultant document goes back to the state in November. By then,

:09:14. > :09:20.everybody will have to apply for the courses that they do not know

:09:20. > :09:24.whether they can afford. There was good news for students with places

:09:24. > :09:28.at UK universities in September. Guernsey students are having their

:09:28. > :09:33.fees cut by 5%. Education Minister Carol Steere says she cannot yet

:09:33. > :09:38.guarantee how much funding they will give to students in 2012.

:09:38. > :09:41.hope to not have to ask the state for a greater funding. If we can

:09:41. > :09:49.keep it at the same level then that would be fantastic. Here is hoping

:09:49. > :09:52.we can. With course fees likely to be in excess of 30,000 for five

:09:52. > :10:01.years tuition, Arthur is worried that if the cost goes up by the

:10:01. > :10:06.time his son starts, the expense would be difficult to digest.

:10:06. > :10:16.Still to come, the weather with David. That is out from ours in the

:10:16. > :10:18.

:10:18. > :10:22.studio. Now I will hand you back to Well come back to a rather windy

:10:22. > :10:28.isle of Wight. We are still at the through ball park waiting for

:10:28. > :10:37.Jersey's match against green land. Elsewhere in the Games, initiating

:10:37. > :10:43.today brought called for Jersey's vet in shooters. The peer of a

:10:43. > :10:47.veteran medallists one again. The dedicated used to this. Back to the

:10:47. > :10:57.track last night and we had gold stars and below-par four hour

:10:57. > :11:07.Records have been tumbling at Island Games as Channel Island

:11:07. > :11:08.

:11:08. > :11:13.athletes are out to impress. Recently I felt I have had it in my

:11:13. > :11:18.legs and I am all for the moon to be able to produce it on the track.

:11:18. > :11:28.Jessie was not to be out done on the record front with their shot

:11:28. > :11:30.

:11:30. > :11:36.putt when. -- jersey. For some, records were far from their mind.

:11:36. > :11:41.Michael Doyle is stark's only athlete. The lads all looked a lot

:11:41. > :11:51.younger than me. It is time I hung up my spikes. There is still plenty

:11:51. > :11:56.

:11:56. > :12:00.of action left at their island -- A veteran athlete hanging up his

:12:00. > :12:08.spikes at the age of 43. The beauty of the Island Games is that there

:12:08. > :12:15.is always space for newcomers, as Mike Wilkins reports.

:12:15. > :12:24.I am looking forward to it! I am a bit apprehensive, but am looking

:12:24. > :12:27.forward to it and I am feeling is steady and camp. Having picked up a

:12:27. > :12:31.shotgun at their end of September, Helen is now the only person from

:12:31. > :12:38.Alderney competing in the clay pigeon shooting. Even before she

:12:38. > :12:45.fired a shot, she had won herself a fan. I am so proud of her as that

:12:45. > :12:52.police shooter to come here, with no other team members, I am so

:12:52. > :13:02.impressed. It is she nerve-racking to come to a male dominated sport.

:13:02. > :13:05.

:13:05. > :13:15.Oh, sorry! Today was very much a learning experience for Helen who

:13:15. > :13:20.

:13:20. > :13:24.was taking on plenty of other hot Helen, they create pigeon bulk just

:13:24. > :13:32.eight weeks ago, so it is no surprise she did not finish on the

:13:32. > :13:35.podium this time. It has been really good fun, I love it. It is

:13:35. > :13:42.not all about winning but about been here and learning from

:13:42. > :13:47.everybody else. Just taking part. Everybody is so friendly. Helen now

:13:47. > :13:57.knows what she is up against. For this low shooter, she has had a

:13:57. > :14:00.

:14:00. > :14:03.And back to football now, we have heard about controversy on the

:14:03. > :14:08.picture regarding Jersey's match with Rhodes last night, but things

:14:08. > :14:13.are looking much better off the pitch, especially for chairs the

:14:13. > :14:20.ladies. Travel issues are marring their competition so far, but as

:14:20. > :14:26.Emma Chambers reports, that will not spoil one players special day.

:14:26. > :14:31.Let us go! Piling themselves into a hired many glass and two cars to

:14:31. > :14:36.get to their match today, transport here has been less than ideal for

:14:36. > :14:41.that football teams. They have had to walk, get a train, and sure

:14:41. > :14:45.coaches. It is not just a Jersey that had the problem, all the

:14:45. > :14:48.violence did. It is not the Association of each Islands fault,

:14:49. > :14:55.it is the lack of available transportation which should have

:14:55. > :15:00.been thought of in advance. We want the players to go to their games

:15:00. > :15:07.focused and relaxed. Not having had to walk for transportation, get on

:15:07. > :15:12.a train, walk to the ground, it is not ideal preparation before a game.

:15:12. > :15:15.For one of the ladies, nothing was boil a her day. It is Ashley's 18th

:15:15. > :15:21.birthday and she says she would not rather be anywhere else to

:15:21. > :15:25.celebrate it. Bit different from being at home. This is a fantastic

:15:25. > :15:32.crowd and they have made it a fantastic day and definitely one to

:15:32. > :15:38.remember. A 2-2 draw against the Isle of Wight may not have been

:15:38. > :15:48.what she wished for a but she will be celebrating tonight. The

:15:48. > :15:49.

:15:49. > :15:53.transport dilemma will be waiting As the third day of competition

:15:53. > :16:00.here in island games and use its close, Guernsey are still

:16:00. > :16:06.dominating the medals table. At last count they had 15 gold medals.

:16:06. > :16:10.Five or six of those were earned a last night. Two swimming golds by

:16:10. > :16:16.14-year-old Christina Ned's. Guernsey's need his rival is the

:16:16. > :16:25.Isle of Wight on nine. Jersey on his seven goals, that is said the

:16:25. > :16:29.medals are looking. Let us look at Lot of fine weather to look forward

:16:29. > :16:35.to row for the next few days. We might see some sharp showers and a

:16:35. > :16:40.flash of lightning in the distance looking east. The lion's share of

:16:40. > :16:46.their heavier showers are moving away. High pressure comes in behind

:16:46. > :16:52.it. By lunchtime on Thursday is is across the western end of the

:16:52. > :17:01.Channel, northern France and the Channel Islands. It is not overly

:17:01. > :17:04.warm. Overnight tonight there is a possibility of the odd downpour or.

:17:04. > :17:11.Winds will become north-westerly and a minimum temperatures of 12

:17:11. > :17:19.degrees. Tomorrow they should be some dry, fine weather. There will

:17:19. > :17:27.be strong sunshine. There will be a Prescott, north-westerly games --

:17:27. > :17:37.wind. There should be some fine weather for the Games. The times of

:17:37. > :17:40.

:17:40. > :17:46.Finally, Island Games, it looks good for tomorrow. We should have

:17:46. > :17:50.some light show was dotted around, sunny spells and temperatures of 80

:17:50. > :17:55.degrees. For the rest of the week and weekend, it is dry on Thursday

:17:56. > :17:59.with north-west winds. Friday and Saturday will be dry both days. The

:17:59. > :18:04.winds change direction and eventually we will see the

:18:04. > :18:14.temperatures pick up a bit. It will take its time and will be cool in

:18:14. > :18:22.

:18:22. > :18:28.the night-time. I will have more And that is just about all we have

:18:28. > :18:32.got time for from island games on the Isle of Wight. Do join us

:18:32. > :18:37.tomorrow at 6:30pm on BBC One for more action from the Games. We will

:18:37. > :18:41.have highlights from the athletics, hopefully some more football,
