:00:06. > :00:08.Good evening, welcome to the programme. Marketing Guernsey jobs

:00:08. > :00:17.off-island - fears local construction workers will lose out

:00:17. > :00:21.Also tonight, we examine the dangers of internet addiction among

:00:21. > :00:31.Channel Island children. And meet the primate Prima Donna who's been

:00:31. > :00:37.

:00:37. > :00:40.monkeying around with a video It's still unclear if the

:00:40. > :00:44.redevelopment of Guernsey Airport will involve any of the local

:00:44. > :00:49.workforce. The Public Services Department says the UK contractor

:00:49. > :00:53.intends to recruit on-island staff once it's signed the contract. But

:00:53. > :01:00.as Mike Wilkins reports, recruitment has already begun... In

:01:00. > :01:02.the UK. Getting a slice of more than 80 million. That's how much

:01:02. > :01:10.it's going to cost to redevelop Guernsey Airport's runway, aircraft

:01:10. > :01:14.stands, taxiways, lighting and drainage. The redevelopment is one

:01:14. > :01:18.of the biggest projects in the island for years. The UK based

:01:18. > :01:21.company Lagan Construction has been named as the preferred bidder. But

:01:21. > :01:29.some feel that while some skilled workers will need to come from the

:01:29. > :01:35.mainland, there are local firms up to the job. We do have some very

:01:35. > :01:38.good at small contractors on the island. It is hopeful that Lagan

:01:38. > :01:42.Construction will engage with them. The level of engagement we'd like

:01:42. > :01:48.to see is perhaps a little more than would normally done in the UK.

:01:48. > :01:51.We'd like to encourage them to talk with these contractors. One of the

:01:51. > :01:54.reasons why some of the building trade in Guernsey is getting a bit

:01:54. > :01:59.jumpy is because of this. Adverts by British recruitment firms

:01:59. > :02:02.looking for machine drivers, ground workers and concrete players to

:02:02. > :02:05.work on a significant project in Guernsey. The problem is that Lagan

:02:06. > :02:11.Construction hasn't yet signed a contract with the States. So

:02:11. > :02:15.Guernsey's workforce is going to have to wait a while longer. It is

:02:15. > :02:21.important there is some form of positive discrimination towards the

:02:21. > :02:24.Guernsey economy. I think that's important. We feel as if we'd been

:02:24. > :02:28.given a chance to take part in this. The States still needs to approve

:02:28. > :02:30.the tender at the end of this month, then there's the wait for planning

:02:30. > :02:33.permission. So it's looking like it'll be October before any

:02:33. > :02:42.contract is signed and any sign is given that local companies can

:02:42. > :02:45.Gay couples in Jersey have been given the right to form civil

:02:45. > :02:49.partnerships. The new law gives same sex couples similar rights to

:02:49. > :02:52.married couples. The States also decided that it would be up to

:02:52. > :02:58.individual religious organisations whether to allow the ceremonies in

:02:58. > :03:01.their churches or building. The airline Flybe has apologised to a

:03:01. > :03:06.World War Two veteran after he was charged 60 to take a Military

:03:06. > :03:09.Standard to the liberation ceremony in Jersey as hand luggage. Alec

:03:09. > :03:15.Penstone complained saying some comrades could not afford the cost.

:03:15. > :03:18.Flybe has now changed its baggage policy. Jersey has a new Planning

:03:18. > :03:20.and Environment Minister. Deputy Rob Duhamel beat three other

:03:21. > :03:26.candidates and will replace Senator Freddie Cohen, who stepped down

:03:26. > :03:29.last week. Deputy Duhamel says he may only have a few months in the

:03:29. > :03:36.role before the October elections, but he believes he can still make a

:03:36. > :03:41.difference. Obviously there's a limited time but the thing is we

:03:41. > :03:46.had a majority of states members, Bar one, who voted for the island

:03:46. > :03:50.plan. What I want to use the period to do is to ensure that we are

:03:50. > :03:54.going to deliver those policies and they are bedded in before the next

:03:54. > :03:57.Minister is voted in the next elections. Are parents losing

:03:57. > :04:00.control of their children when it comes to the internet and computer

:04:00. > :04:03.games? An addictions expert is in the Channel Islands this week to

:04:03. > :04:07.talk about the problem of excessive internet use. We'll hear from that

:04:07. > :04:10.expert, Rick Dubras, in a moment about what parents can do. But

:04:10. > :04:15.first, our reporter has the story of one young man in Jersey who

:04:15. > :04:21.became addicted to gaming. Hayden and Conor have been friends since

:04:21. > :04:24.childhood. And Hayden has needed his friends in recent years. During

:04:24. > :04:33.a time when he faced problems in the real world, including bullying

:04:33. > :04:37.at school, he found an escape in gaming. I could be who I wanted to

:04:37. > :04:42.be, I could act how I wanted to act. If anyone I didn't like showed up,

:04:42. > :04:46.I could just ignore them using different options. I used it to

:04:46. > :04:50.escape my reality because reality was cruel to me. I hated the person

:04:50. > :04:54.I was in real life. I just used this as a way to escape and be who

:04:54. > :04:56.I wanted to be. Staying up late gaming and logging on straight

:04:56. > :05:04.after breakfast, Hayden stopped seeing friends. Conor became

:05:04. > :05:07.concerned and decided he needed to do something. We felt like he was

:05:07. > :05:11.drifting away from us and we didn't want that to happen. We had to talk

:05:11. > :05:14.some sense into him. More and more of us are using things like

:05:14. > :05:17.Facebook and Twitter to stay in touch. It's easy to become

:05:17. > :05:24.dependent. And that can lead to addiction. Experts say parents need

:05:24. > :05:28.to be aware of the dangers. In the schools they are protected, there

:05:28. > :05:33.are heavy filters in place to protect them. But when they leave

:05:33. > :05:37.school they often go home and there is none, if little of filtering

:05:37. > :05:40.going on. It's hard to see what they're doing. For Hayden though he

:05:40. > :05:43.did get help from a counsellor and overcame his addiction. Both he and

:05:43. > :05:47.Conor insist gaming can help build confidence and the internet is a

:05:47. > :05:57.great place to make friends. Just, they warn, be careful not to let

:05:57. > :05:57.

:05:57. > :06:00.the virtual world get in the way of Rick Dubras is an expert in

:06:00. > :06:07.managing addictions like Hayden's, and he's in Jersey to help parents

:06:07. > :06:10.spot the signs. He joined me earlier in the studio. I started by

:06:10. > :06:20.asking him if parents should just be adjusting security and access

:06:20. > :06:20.

:06:20. > :06:26.settings on the home computer. actually don't think that it is

:06:26. > :06:31.about setting up programmes or security. Our children, like you've

:06:31. > :06:37.said, they are very savvy. They know the system has more than we do,

:06:37. > :06:41.generally speaking. I'm wanting to push the idea that we can have

:06:41. > :06:46.influence and have relationships with our children that is what our

:06:46. > :06:49.children follow, and that we learn how to trust them understand what's

:06:50. > :06:54.too much and what's not enough. If we are talking about what is

:06:54. > :06:58.negotiable on the internet and what's not, then we have to have

:06:58. > :07:02.influence, we have to have relationships. I don't think it's

:07:02. > :07:05.about setting up security software packages up on the computer to

:07:06. > :07:11.limit their ability to access the internet. They can just go and

:07:11. > :07:14.access it in a cafe. What about the gaming corporations, it's in their

:07:14. > :07:20.interest to get kids hooked into playing it for hours a day, so how

:07:20. > :07:23.can parents persuade their children to put the games console down?

:07:23. > :07:27.use a great word - persuasion. We can only persuade and influence

:07:27. > :07:31.when we have a relationship. In a relationship be then influence. We

:07:31. > :07:36.can start then negotiating with our young people as to what is too much

:07:36. > :07:40.and what is too little. But when we are spending up to five hours

:07:40. > :07:45.connecting and not sitting at dinner with our family, when we are

:07:45. > :07:49.not able to clean our room and do the chores and the family and being

:07:49. > :07:52.relationships with each other, that's when I start to see the

:07:52. > :07:56.disconnect and dislocation that happens in families. That is when

:07:56. > :08:01.we start fighting, and that's when we start getting emotional. That's

:08:01. > :08:06.when we are no longer being able to have emotionally mutual

:08:06. > :08:08.conversations about our concerns. Lots of food for thought there.

:08:08. > :08:15.That presentation from Rick is being held at Haute Vallee theatre

:08:15. > :08:18.at 6.00pm tomorrow evening. You're watching the BBC in the Channel

:08:18. > :08:28.Islands. Later in Spotlight with Justin and Victoria, we join Prince

:08:28. > :08:29.

:08:29. > :08:32.Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall Now, here at the BBC, we like to

:08:32. > :08:37.think that making television is a highly skilled craft that needs to

:08:37. > :08:40.be honed over many years. So imagine our surprise that a 27-

:08:40. > :08:46.year-old silverback gorilla has had a go for the first time and is

:08:46. > :08:50.already a hit! Ya Kwanza was given a video camera by his keepers at

:08:50. > :08:53.Durrell. Amy Harris has been taking a look at his work. He's one of

:08:53. > :09:00.Durrell's most photographed residents and it seems, despite his

:09:00. > :09:05.glum face, Ya Kwanza enjoys working the lens. He's started filming

:09:05. > :09:15.himself. The silverback gorilla got his paws on this yellow camera and

:09:15. > :09:18.soon got up to some monkey business. Little did Ya Kwanza know - it was

:09:18. > :09:27.all planned. His keepers covered the camera in his favourite treats,

:09:27. > :09:37.hoping he'd pick it up so they could see his life through a lens.

:09:37. > :09:38.

:09:38. > :09:47.Let's see what happens. The result - these never seen before images.

:09:47. > :09:53.And unlike some stars, he was happy to hand the pictures over! Pass the

:09:53. > :09:55.box! Ya Kwanza's leaving Jersey soon after almost 20 years, so this

:09:55. > :10:05.footage will provide a lasting memory of a very photo friendly

:10:05. > :10:10.

:10:10. > :10:19.He's not bad. I wonder what would happen if we attached food to the

:10:19. > :10:23.BBC cameras? Maybe we you would get We've had wet weather today, but

:10:23. > :10:27.thankfully that's moving out of the way. For the next few days, until

:10:27. > :10:31.the weekend, there's a lot of dry weather and the sunshine will

:10:31. > :10:35.return. The area of low pressure that generated the showers is

:10:35. > :10:39.moving away this evening. Quite a lot of cloud for the first half of

:10:39. > :10:42.the night and then it moves away. By lunchtime tomorrow, we have a

:10:42. > :10:46.ridge of high pressure which will stick their for much of the day,

:10:46. > :10:53.all day on Thursday before a weather front will trickle in from

:10:53. > :10:57.the West. It will introduce a lot more cloud into Friday. That was

:10:57. > :11:01.the picture from earlier today, you can see the blues and yellows -

:11:01. > :11:05.that's where we've had some quite heavy rain in the last 12 hours or

:11:05. > :11:11.so. That has now moved out of the way. It's initially cloudy

:11:11. > :11:15.overnight but the skies begin to break towards dawn. The winds also

:11:15. > :11:19.dropping. Tomorrow should be a decent day. Some sunny spells,

:11:19. > :11:29.patchy cloud, winds from the north and temperatures getting up to 18

:11:29. > :11:46.

:11:46. > :11:51.or 19 degrees. Quite a pleasant day The forecast for Thursday is bright,

:11:51. > :11:54.dry with some sunshine. That weak weather front will come in on

:11:54. > :11:58.Friday and make things rather cloudy but it should remain dry.

:11:58. > :12:01.That is until Friday night and into Saturday when we see some more wet

:12:02. > :12:11.weather turning up. Saturday looks like it could be rather cloudy,

:12:12. > :12:13.
