:00:10. > :00:16.Welcome to the BBC in the Channel Islands. The headlines this Tuesday

:00:16. > :00:21.evening: Spen now to cut crime later. Why prisoners are in line

:00:21. > :00:27.for thousands of pounds of extra funding. The education helps you to

:00:27. > :00:37.look at life. As Guernsey and Jersey a host a major European

:00:37. > :00:43.

:00:43. > :00:49.cricket competition, find out how the home team's got on. 400,000,

:00:49. > :00:54.that is what is being spent to help prisoners in Guernsey. A new

:00:54. > :00:57.education unit is being built at the island's jail. It will teach

:00:57. > :01:03.prisoners skills for life on the outside. It is aimed at reducing

:01:03. > :01:08.reoffending. Paul has nearly finished his

:01:08. > :01:12.sentence. Whilst he has been in prison, he spent time and education

:01:12. > :01:18.block learning Spanish and Russian. Learning has helped me reflect on

:01:18. > :01:22.what I did, I am in here for money laundering and fraud, and it is

:01:22. > :01:27.something I should never have contemplated doing. In here, you

:01:27. > :01:34.have time to reflect on that, education helps you concentrate on

:01:34. > :01:39.moving forward, the punishment is not having freedom. The education

:01:40. > :01:46.helps you to look at life once you get out of here. This is the room

:01:46. > :01:50.currently used for lessons. It will be turned into a job club. Another

:01:50. > :01:56.workshop and two classrooms are being built to teach prisoners jobs

:01:56. > :02:01.like painting and decorating. The new facility will cost 400,000 and

:02:01. > :02:07.can take 40 prisoners a day. It might sound like a lot of money but

:02:07. > :02:10.the Prison Service say they hope it will cut reoffending. We want our

:02:11. > :02:14.prisoners to go back into the community, be part of the society

:02:14. > :02:21.in the community where they can give something back. In order to do

:02:21. > :02:25.that, we must ensure that our prisoners have learning facilities

:02:25. > :02:32.that meat industry standards, that will enable them to gain the

:02:32. > :02:37.qualifications and provide them with work opportunities. -- that is

:02:37. > :02:42.by industry standards. Although the idea of spending taxpayers' money

:02:42. > :02:48.on it will not appeal to everybody, the staff insist this will benefit

:02:48. > :02:51.everybody in the community and lead to a brighter future. On the theme

:02:51. > :02:58.of education, the cost of going to university in Jersey will be

:02:58. > :03:03.cheaper this year. The states have negotiated a temporary reprieve.

:03:03. > :03:09.Fees will be more at the September, depending on the course and

:03:09. > :03:19.university chosen. However, a deal for SEP- 2012, when UK universities

:03:19. > :03:21.

:03:21. > :03:23.can charge 9,000, has yet to be can charge 9,000, has yet to be

:03:23. > :03:32.can charge 9,000, has yet to be can charge 9,000, has yet to be

:03:32. > :03:39.agreed. -- SEP- 2012. September 2012. It is very good news command

:03:39. > :03:45.will be welcomed by the parents that are forking out the money.

:03:45. > :03:52.people have been sentenced in Guernsey's Royal Court of four

:03:52. > :04:00.smuggling methadone into the island. One man was given concurrent

:04:00. > :04:05.sentences or four and 21 months. The other was given community

:04:05. > :04:10.services. Some politicians are delaying plans for redeveloping

:04:10. > :04:15.Guernsey's airport. The 80 million project would bring the runway and

:04:15. > :04:19.surrounding area up to date with modern safety standards. But

:04:19. > :04:23.questions have been raised about value-for-money. The states will

:04:23. > :04:29.meet next week to discuss the issue. The problem with the runway issue

:04:29. > :04:37.is the cost of the project. The environmental impact, the exporting

:04:38. > :04:42.of jobs outside of Guernsey, we really do not need to create a

:04:42. > :04:52.model village. It would be better if the project could be scaled down

:04:52. > :04:55.

:04:55. > :05:02.and resource locally. Later in Spotlight: eyes will be skywards as

:05:02. > :05:09.the aircraft on display. The sound of leather on willow has

:05:09. > :05:11.been bringing out around the Channel Islands. We are hosting the

:05:11. > :05:21.European Division One cricket tournaments. This morning, Jersey

:05:21. > :05:22.

:05:22. > :05:27.took on Germany. Guernsey got on to a flying start against Norway.

:05:27. > :05:32.Preparing for the start of the Twenty20 tournament, Jersey's first

:05:32. > :05:42.competitors are the Germans. It is an anxious time for the youngest

:05:42. > :05:50.player. He is confident Jersey can get a victory. I think Twenty20 is

:05:50. > :05:55.action-packed and quick. Something will happen anytime in the game.

:05:55. > :06:05.Twenty20 shortens cricket matches with just 20 or birds each. It

:06:05. > :06:06.

:06:06. > :06:10.keeps it exciting and easy to follow. -- 20 overs. If we can do

:06:10. > :06:14.well in this tournament we get to the next stage. We have to make

:06:14. > :06:24.sure we play well against Germany because we know they are already

:06:24. > :06:24.

:06:24. > :06:31.some side. Jersey won the toss. A tense match followed, but Jersey

:06:31. > :06:41.won by six wickets. Are they now take on Israel. -- they will now

:06:41. > :06:43.

:06:43. > :06:52.play Israel. Guernsey played against Norway, and won the game by

:06:52. > :07:00.10 wickets. It is not always great to win that easily. But it is great.

:07:00. > :07:08.Great start, and a hero's ending. The eyes of the world are upon us.

:07:08. > :07:17.The game ended in good spirits, and Guernsey will now play Croatia.

:07:17. > :07:23.Guernsey will now play Croatia. This afternoon's results: Guernsey

:07:23. > :07:33.took on Israel and beat them. Jersey are still playing Croatia.

:07:33. > :07:38.

:07:38. > :07:43.Croatia are 9747. -- 97-7. Kurtis Guthrie has signed for the leak two

:07:43. > :07:53.club Accrington Stanley. -- the League Two club. He has impressed

:07:53. > :07:57.

:07:57. > :08:01.after scoring twice in Friendly's. Accrington Stanley, who are they?

:08:01. > :08:09.If you do not know what I'm talking about look at it on the Internet.

:08:09. > :08:12.We will see more rain in the Channel Islands. There will be

:08:12. > :08:17.showers tomorrow midday. You can see the area of low pressure. It

:08:17. > :08:22.does not develop initially, but later on, it will move and by the

:08:22. > :08:27.time we wake up tomorrow morning the rain will come in through to

:08:27. > :08:35.the end of the day. This is lunchtime tomorrow, by lunchtime on

:08:35. > :08:39.Thursday it is still across the central part of France. There is a

:08:39. > :08:44.possibility that we will continue to see outbreaks of rain. There is

:08:44. > :08:51.a wet spell continuing to come. The most persistent rain will set in.

:08:52. > :08:55.Temperatures will be no lower than 12 degrees. Wind will swing around

:08:55. > :09:01.and become South easterly by the end of the day. I outbreaks of rain

:09:01. > :09:07.by the end of the day, perhaps less than in for a time. -- perhaps

:09:07. > :09:14.petering out for a time. The top figure will be 61 degrees

:09:14. > :09:24.Fahrenheit. The wind will be from the south-west. There will be rain

:09:24. > :09:27.

:10:04. > :10:12.warmer. Here is the summary. Finally, a very happy birthday to

:10:12. > :10:17.this woman, who is 100 today. This was the moment she was presented

:10:17. > :10:22.with her birthday card this afternoon. She got a birthday card

:10:22. > :10:27.from the Queen. A proud moment for the lady who has lived in the

:10:27. > :10:34.island all her life. What is the secret to living for a century? For

:10:34. > :10:41.our reporter asked her. I think you have to be jolly, you have to laugh,

:10:41. > :10:48.and you have to take things as they are. Lots of people in Jersey live
