:00:07. > :00:12.Good evening and welcome to eight saw the Channel Islands This
:00:12. > :00:17.Wednesday. Here are top stories tonight: Save our houses are good
:00:17. > :00:21.or homes be slowly poisoning us with the deadly gas?
:00:21. > :00:24.Plus outing on a modernised gambling industry to bring in extra
:00:24. > :00:34.revenue safely. And the local teenager getting in
:00:34. > :00:40.
:00:40. > :00:44.the swing of helping others with a sponsored golf marathon.
:00:44. > :00:48.First tonight, there is a fresh warning for people living in houses
:00:48. > :00:54.from traditional challenge Island granite. A family in Jersey believe
:00:54. > :01:02.their father's death from lung cancer could be due to inhaling the
:01:02. > :01:09.deadly gas radon. It is a silent threat, you cannot see, it's --
:01:09. > :01:14.smell, or taste it. The Jersey Government has always estimated the
:01:14. > :01:18.risk as being low but that is not stopping the Hanson family for a
:01:18. > :01:23.better awareness. Vernon Hanson was an active 75-
:01:23. > :01:27.year-old. One year ago he was diagnosed with lung cancer. It
:01:27. > :01:32.recently claimed his life. Back came as a huge shock to his family
:01:32. > :01:38.as he had never smoked a stayed in smoky places. His son Timothy is
:01:38. > :01:41.left wondering why lung cancer is so prevalent in Jersey. It is not
:01:41. > :01:46.necessarily that case there is a legacy of cheap cigarettes of the
:01:46. > :01:52.island. The other factor is that Joseph has a certain geology and
:01:52. > :02:02.that it suffers from radon gas, particularly in certain areas.
:02:02. > :02:02.
:02:02. > :02:07.After smoking, radon is the next because for lung cancer. A largely
:02:07. > :02:11.symptom when Bath, radon is rarely detected but it is constantly
:02:11. > :02:16.released from granite. This is one of the area is considered at higher
:02:16. > :02:20.risk. There are many homes built on granite foundations. Beautiful to
:02:20. > :02:25.look at but could they be harmful to your health? These properties
:02:25. > :02:29.are built with the membrane to ensure that radon gas cannot get
:02:29. > :02:32.into the house. The measures that are taken to ensure that all the
:02:32. > :02:36.properties have very good ventilation so we want to ensure
:02:36. > :02:40.that they are bricks around the base of the property and not
:02:40. > :02:45.obstructed, that there is good ventilation and that prevents the
:02:45. > :02:49.build-up of gas. The onus is on the owner of the property to make sure
:02:49. > :02:53.that they keep it in good repair. Timothy Hanson says that is
:02:53. > :02:57.complacent. This is something these days need to get involved in. One
:02:57. > :03:02.of the simple things that can be done is to install a radon detector
:03:02. > :03:05.in your house. The detector measures radon in the home's
:03:05. > :03:13.natural environment. He hopes his experience will prompt more people
:03:14. > :03:18.to act now to ensure the air they breathe is safe.
:03:18. > :03:23.2010 was a bumper year for just the Telecom. The group had a record
:03:23. > :03:28.turnover of almost 100 million, making a pre-tax profit of nearly
:03:28. > :03:31.12 million. The company put its success down to reduce operating
:03:31. > :03:36.costs and increased investment in drug and speeds on the island. The
:03:36. > :03:40.figures come from the annual accounts of the state's which shows
:03:40. > :03:44.that Jersey Water reported profits of just over 4 million. However
:03:44. > :03:51.2010 was another year for a decline vergers the post. It's always fall
:03:51. > :03:59.in profits. -- just the post. Jersey is sending 400,000 to
:03:59. > :04:04.people affected by the famine in East Africa. The Jersey overseas
:04:04. > :04:08.Commission will split its money across different aid agencies

:04:12. > :04:16.funkypigeon.com is looking at setting up in Guernsey. It is
:04:16. > :04:22.advertising for a warehouse and operations manager. One of the
:04:22. > :04:27.firm's competitors, business macro is already based on the island. --
:04:27. > :04:36.Moonpig.com. The growth of the industry has prompted criticism and

:04:40. > :04:43.Jersey's gambling laws have been updated to meet modern
:04:43. > :04:47.international standards and provide protection for vulnerable people.
:04:47. > :04:51.Politicians have agreed to a new gambling law but the Minister says

:05:14. > :05:20.inadequate and out of date. They do not provide infect -- protection.
:05:20. > :05:27.It is a step forward to make sure we have modern and up-to-date laws.
:05:27. > :05:30.The new law comes months ahead of new law coming in. It would allow
:05:30. > :05:35.the island to accommodate e-gaming. While the new law will mean the
:05:35. > :05:41.island will now cope with modern technology, some worry about the
:05:41. > :05:45.impact of internet gambling. Because of e-gaming being a
:05:45. > :05:50.worldwide gaming network, I do not know we will not be doing damage to
:05:50. > :05:54.families in other parts of the world when that people gets
