:00:12. > :00:16.Good evening. The top stories around our region. Less for your

:00:16. > :00:22.cash if you are in Jersey, as the cost of living rises dramatically.

:00:22. > :00:27.But in Guernsey, prices increase more slowly. Plus, both islands are

:00:27. > :00:32.a step closer to the cricket World Cup, after a successful day at the

:00:32. > :00:42.wicket. Stay tuned to find out why all these people behind me are

:00:42. > :00:44.

:00:44. > :00:47.training for a whole weekend on the The cost of living in Jersey has

:00:47. > :00:50.risen dramatically according to inflation figures released today.

:00:50. > :00:55.The rise is being blamed on an increase in the rate of GST that

:00:55. > :01:01.came into effect in June. Prices are now increasing at 4.4% - three

:01:01. > :01:06.months ago they were increasing at just 2.9%. Meanwhile, inflation in

:01:06. > :01:10.Guernsey remains lower, rising more slowly in the last three months.

:01:10. > :01:15.Prices increased by 2.6%, that's less than three months ago. Amy

:01:15. > :01:19.Harris has been looking at the figures. Friday lunchtime and the

:01:19. > :01:27.shoppers in Jersey are out in force. But with costs rising, many are

:01:28. > :01:31.feeling the pinch. The live with it but it is a little bit annoying.

:01:31. > :01:36.Considering that the majority of people have frozen wages and

:01:36. > :01:40.everything. Everyone is feeling the pinch. The price of food has shot

:01:40. > :01:44.up. I do my own shopping now rather than my mum doing it, so it does

:01:44. > :01:47.cost more than I thought. figures out today indicate life has

:01:47. > :01:52.got more expensive. Prices in Jersey are now increasing at 4.4% -

:01:52. > :01:56.an increase of 1.5% from three months ago. The increase in GST is

:01:56. > :02:03.the main reason for the rapid rise. More evidence, say critics, that

:02:04. > :02:08.it's hitting islanders hard. affects the basic living costs of

:02:08. > :02:12.many ordinary people. That's what the fight was about. Unfortunately,

:02:12. > :02:15.not enough of my colleagues' support of that, which is sad.

:02:15. > :02:18.Meanwhile inflation in Guernsey is now nearly 2% lower than Jersey and

:02:18. > :02:22.if you take away the effect of GST, underlying inflation is much lower

:02:22. > :02:28.in the Channel Islands than in the UK with Guernsey and Jersey both

:02:28. > :02:31.below the 3.7% rate there. So why? Well, motoring makes up a large

:02:31. > :02:41.proportion of the UK figures and we don't spend as much on motoring

:02:41. > :02:46.here. Clothing and household goods are also rising at a slower rate.

:02:46. > :02:51.Our suppliers at the end of 2010 told us we were likely to expect

:02:51. > :02:58.about a 10 % increase in prices due to roll materials increasing in

:02:58. > :03:03.price. They were going to swallow half of that, so it left us with an

:03:03. > :03:06.increase of four to 5%. The figures coming out don't surprise us really.

:03:06. > :03:12.So a little good news for shoppers, but these figures will make you

:03:12. > :03:15.feel much better if you're spending in Guernsey rather than Jersey.

:03:15. > :03:18.Meanwhile, the price of gas is going up in Guernsey from the

:03:19. > :03:22.beginning of next month. The 7.6% rise follows a similar increase in

:03:22. > :03:27.February, so it means customers will be paying 15% more than at the

:03:27. > :03:32.start of the year. Guernsey Gas says it's necessary because of

:03:32. > :03:36.continued high world energy prices. Work on a new nuclear reactor on

:03:36. > :03:39.the French coast has been delayed by further two years. The plant at

:03:39. > :03:44.Flamanville won't now open until 2016, and it'll cost nearly twice

:03:44. > :03:48.the original estimate. Guernsey and Jersey get nearly all their

:03:48. > :03:50.electricity from France. EDF, who own the plant, say two serious

:03:50. > :03:57.accidents on the construction sites and safety tests carried out after

:03:57. > :04:01.the Fukushima accident are amongst the reasons for the fresh delays.

:04:01. > :04:04.The rate of tax paid by some of the wealthiest people in Jersey will be

:04:04. > :04:08.going down. The States has approved new rules for 11K residents, which

:04:08. > :04:15.will mean they pay 20 % tax on their income up to 625,000 and

:04:15. > :04:21.then 1% on income after that. The government wants to encourage more

:04:22. > :04:25.high-earners to move into the island. People in Guernsey are

:04:25. > :04:28.being warned they need to do their bit to help bring poisonous weeds

:04:28. > :04:33.and plants under control. Noxious weeds like ragwort and spear

:04:33. > :04:37.thistle are in flower and will seed over the next couple of months. If

:04:37. > :04:40.eaten, ragwort can kill humans, horses and livestock. People with

:04:40. > :04:48.land are being asked to stop its spread or States contractors will

:04:48. > :04:52.tackle the problem and send owners the bill. We are really concerned

:04:52. > :04:57.about it appearing in large quantities in fields and on

:04:57. > :05:04.wasteland, because it spreads so much by seed. That's the major

:05:04. > :05:06.problem because it spreads hugely around the island. Guernsey and

:05:06. > :05:09.Jersey cricketers have reached the semi finals of the European

:05:09. > :05:12.Division One Championship that is being played in the islands. It

:05:12. > :05:16.means they are both just one victory away from securing a place

:05:16. > :05:22.at the final qualifying tournament for the cricket Twenty20 World Cup.

:05:22. > :05:26.Ian Kelly has been watching the action. It was a must win game for

:05:26. > :05:29.Jersey and right from the off they never looked in trouble. They

:05:29. > :05:35.limited France to just 98 in their 20 overs and cruised past them with

:05:35. > :05:43.wickets and overs in hand. An unbeaten half century from Ed

:05:43. > :05:47.Farley lead the way. The team has played well all week. We've been

:05:47. > :05:52.playing pretty well over the last two years. It's a lot of hard work

:05:52. > :05:56.and it's nice to see it paying off. We just got to keep working now and

:05:56. > :05:59.keep winning. It's an amazing feeling, the boys have done very

:05:59. > :06:04.well this week. A glitch in the system yesterday but four super

:06:04. > :06:07.games of cricket. We can't wait for tomorrow. Guernsey also had an easy

:06:07. > :06:14.victory over Gibraltar. Chasing a target of 117, Jeremy Frith and

:06:14. > :06:19.Ross Kneller steered Guernsey home with 15 balls to spare. It's great,

:06:19. > :06:24.that was what we set out to do. We take every game as it comes but

:06:24. > :06:27.ultimately we wanted to win this stage, get through to the semis and

:06:27. > :06:30.take it from there. So Guernsey will take on Denmark and Jersey

:06:30. > :06:33.Italy in tomorrow's semi final. Victory will not only earn a place

:06:33. > :06:43.in Sunday's final but also an invite to the final round of

:06:43. > :06:45.

:06:45. > :06:48.qualifiers for the Twenty20 World A year on from the introduction of

:06:48. > :06:52.a kerbside recycling scheme in St Helier, the first load of material

:06:52. > :06:54.is ready to be shipped off to France. Cardboard, paper, plastic

:06:54. > :06:59.bottles, aluminium and steel cans are being sorted, crushed and

:06:59. > :07:03.bundled onto trailers. They'll be sent to France to be sold as

:07:03. > :07:12.commodities. The success of a pilot area in town means recycling pick-

:07:12. > :07:16.ups will be rolled out. We are rolling out cardboard collection

:07:16. > :07:21.across town. Some more businesses will be invited to separate their

:07:21. > :07:31.recycling, so that we can collect the cardboard so we can send more

:07:31. > :07:31.

:07:31. > :07:35.for recycling. Beach volleyball is coming this weekend. We see a

:07:35. > :07:45.massive tournament on Jersey's guns side. Those in charge want your

:07:45. > :07:55.

:07:55. > :08:00.help. Edward has been to find out The sun is out finally, it's got to

:08:00. > :08:03.be, I'm in my shorts. I'm right here at the Gunsite in Jersey,

:08:03. > :08:08.where loads of people are getting ready for this weekend's volleyball

:08:09. > :08:12.tournament. There's a chance that you can get involved, too. Alex,

:08:12. > :08:16.what's going on this weekend? is the first of the three

:08:16. > :08:20.tournaments we hold every summer. It's the heritage oil mixed fours

:08:20. > :08:25.tournament, which means he will have teams of four or more players

:08:25. > :08:28.on court. They will be all abilities. We will have some people

:08:28. > :08:32.who play for the island or regularly, and you will have some

:08:32. > :08:42.people who've never played before. They will be having a great time.

:08:42. > :09:11.

:09:11. > :09:14.This lot are begging to start, Don't worry if you can't make the

:09:14. > :09:18.tournament this weekend, there was here say you'd be more than welcome

:09:18. > :09:25.to join them on Thursday night at 6pm for training. Just keep fingers

:09:25. > :09:29.64,000 girls, 12,000 volunteers and 16 counties and islands - and this

:09:29. > :09:32.Jersey woman has taken on the task of looking after them all. Solange

:09:32. > :09:40.Rebours is the first woman from Jersey to become the head of Girl-

:09:40. > :09:43.guiding for the whole of the South West. A very proud to be from

:09:43. > :09:47.Jersey and being in this role and from the islands. Some of the

:09:47. > :09:50.things I'll be doing is visiting girls in various units throughout

:09:50. > :09:53.the south-west, listening to what they've got to say and meeting

:09:53. > :10:03.their leaders and finding out what they are enjoying about guiding,

:10:03. > :10:06.The weekend promises some sunshine for the Channel Islands. We may see

:10:06. > :10:10.a few early showers tomorrow morning, most of which will

:10:10. > :10:17.disappear into the afternoon on both Saturday and Sunday afternoon

:10:17. > :10:19.it is dry with sunny spells. It's a bit warmer, too. There's this

:10:20. > :10:23.weather front here which will continue to generate showers

:10:23. > :10:26.through the English Channel coming into the Channel Islands overnight

:10:26. > :10:30.tonight. The remnants of that will be around first thing tomorrow

:10:30. > :10:33.morning but into the afternoon it will clear. Even though there are

:10:33. > :10:37.weather fronts trying to get in from the West on Sunday, they

:10:37. > :10:40.mainly affect the Bay of Biscay and the western side of France. We may

:10:41. > :10:45.see an increase in the cloud amounts but it remains dry and a

:10:45. > :10:49.bit warmer. Tonight, temperatures similar to what we've seen for the

:10:49. > :10:53.past couple of nights. The risk of showers right through until dawn

:10:54. > :11:02.tomorrow morning, as that line of cloud comes in. It will be around

:11:02. > :11:12.tomorrow morning, too, but it will gradually move its way away from us.

:11:12. > :11:38.

:11:38. > :11:41.Winds from the north-west and It may be that on Sunday we have

:11:41. > :11:47.some morning sunshine. Then into the afternoon it is generally

:11:47. > :11:51.clouded over but remaining dry. Monday, the weather front close by
