:00:05. > :00:09.Hello and welcome to BBC Channel Islands this Tuesday evening.

:00:09. > :00:14.Coming up on the programme: Sacrificing sunshine for salaries -

:00:14. > :00:17.students warned to take jobs while they still can.

:00:17. > :00:22.Also tonight, a long time coming - could this school finally get its

:00:22. > :00:32.makeover? And we put the world's poshest

:00:32. > :00:39.

:00:39. > :00:43.potato to the test. Can La Bonnotte More school leavers and graduates

:00:43. > :00:53.are out of work this summer because of a lack of jobs. Careers Jersey

:00:53. > :00:55.

:00:55. > :00:59.says they are facing more competition. They say they should

:00:59. > :01:03.seek help now rather than take the summer off. Edward Sault reports.

:01:03. > :01:06.Tuesday afternoon, and Jonny is at work at this coffee shop. He has

:01:06. > :01:09.just finished his A-levels and is off to university in September. But

:01:09. > :01:15.unlike some of his peers, he has decided not to take the summer off

:01:16. > :01:20.and work instead. I think it is good to know what it is like in a

:01:20. > :01:23.working environment. You need to get as much experience as possible.

:01:23. > :01:27.It is good to get experience when you do go to university because you

:01:27. > :01:31.might need a part-time jobs. Jonny is one of the lucky ones. Andy

:01:31. > :01:37.Gibbs is a career adviser and says students and graduates need to act

:01:37. > :01:41.now. It is very competitive for young people at the moment. It is

:01:41. > :01:44.difficult to move into employment for the first time and that is an

:01:44. > :01:47.area of we are concentrating on. And that is a view shared by

:01:47. > :01:53.recruitment consultants. Sarah says the work is out there, but you must

:01:53. > :01:58.have the right attitude. There are places for them, and companies are

:01:58. > :02:02.obviously willing to help, and it will help them in the future. But

:02:02. > :02:05.it is all about getting in there. But it is not all bad news. Here at

:02:05. > :02:12.Waitrose, bosses have taken on students to help them over the

:02:12. > :02:16.summer months. So far, I think we have 29 students we have taken on

:02:16. > :02:21.this summer. We have taken on other people over the summer that are not

:02:21. > :02:25.students, and with that there are probably around 30 students to De -

:02:26. > :02:29.- who are with us permanently. Around 70 students overall. Whilst

:02:29. > :02:32.the economy may on the whole be starting to heal, jobs are still

:02:32. > :02:42.few and far between, but the message for people like Jonny is,

:02:42. > :02:42.

:02:42. > :02:46.A Jersey building company set up 130 years ago has gone into

:02:46. > :02:50.voluntary liquidation. Charles le Quesne Limited recently won a

:02:50. > :02:53.contract to refurbish homes on a Jersey Housing Department estate.

:02:53. > :02:58.The company had started work on the refurbishment of Clos Gossett in St

:02:58. > :03:03.Saviour, but work there has been stopped. It has a separate branch

:03:03. > :03:07.in Guernsey, which is unaffected. One of Jersey's leading hotels has

:03:07. > :03:10.been sold. Grand Jersey is now owned by a subsidiary of the Royal

:03:10. > :03:12.Bank of Scotland and is now being managed by BDL, a Glasgow-based

:03:12. > :03:18.company that also runs InterContinental Hotels and the

:03:18. > :03:25.Holiday Inn chain in the UK. The company says the 120 staff will be

:03:25. > :03:27.kept on and it will continue to trade under its name.

:03:27. > :03:30.Guernsey has, in the past, come within one boat delivery of

:03:30. > :03:33.completely running out of fuel. That's according to harbourmaster

:03:33. > :03:38.Captain Peter Gill, who says a deep water berth would provide the

:03:38. > :03:41.island with greater energy security. The current harbour only allows for

:03:41. > :03:45.deliveries on certain days due to the tide, and can only accommodate

:03:45. > :03:48.specific vessels. Captain Gill believes a deep water berth would

:03:48. > :03:54.allow a wider range of vessels to dock, which would enable fuel

:03:54. > :03:58.deliveries any day. A 500,000 project to create a new

:03:58. > :04:02.community centre in Guernsey could get underway by the end of the year.

:04:02. > :04:06.After years of delay, the official plans for the former Mont Varouf in

:04:06. > :04:11.St Saviours are now being considered. Penny Elderfield went

:04:11. > :04:16.to take a look around. There's little left at what was

:04:16. > :04:20.Mont Varouf school to reflect it's former use. It's been vacant for

:04:21. > :04:24.years. The classrooms left unused, the building deteriorating. And

:04:24. > :04:29.it's clear just how much work needs to be done to transform this

:04:29. > :04:32.building into a new community centre. But after years of delay,

:04:32. > :04:42.now things are starting to get moving, with the official plans now

:04:42. > :04:42.

:04:42. > :04:48.awaiting approval. We have not had a centre before, the parish lost

:04:48. > :04:51.its harm some time ago, and we see it becoming the heart of the parish.

:04:51. > :04:54.We think it would draw people together. But with hundreds of

:04:54. > :04:57.thousands of pounds to raise, there's a long way to go yet. And

:04:57. > :05:00.even with the money, this project wouldn't be possible without the

:05:00. > :05:03.help of volunteers. Who have already got to work transforming

:05:03. > :05:13.some of the outside areas. Transforming what was an overgrown

:05:13. > :05:13.

:05:13. > :05:18.corner into a new sensory garden. We have a group of people, we cut

:05:19. > :05:24.our way and, and we want to walk her way out, literally hacking

:05:24. > :05:29.things down to around three feet high. We had to lorry-load school

:05:29. > :05:36.to a tip on Saturday. Then we had been doing the more refined work,

:05:36. > :05:39.probably spent over 100 houses here. -- powers. It'll take a lot of hard

:05:39. > :05:42.work by people like Liz to bring this building back to life. But

:05:42. > :05:44.they hope it'll be the start of this building becoming the heart of

:05:44. > :05:47.the parish. Judges for the Britain In Bloom

:05:47. > :05:49.competition were in Jersey today. Grouville parish was in the

:05:49. > :05:52.spotlight as the Royal Horticultural Society assessed the

:05:52. > :05:55.parish's floral displays and community spirit. Grouville is

:05:55. > :06:03.among 76 national finalists chosen from more than 1000 cities, towns

:06:03. > :06:05.and villages in Britain. Some sports news for you now, and

:06:05. > :06:09.Jersey sailor Phil Sharp has finished the first leg of the

:06:09. > :06:13.Solitaire du Figaro in seventh place out of 47 boats. He completed

:06:13. > :06:17.the opening stage of the 1700 mile race a quarter of an hour behind

:06:17. > :06:21.the leader in a time of just over 50 hours. Competing in the Figaro

:06:21. > :06:30.for the first time, Phil said he was delighted to come in the top

:06:30. > :06:34.ten. I was happy with it, maybe not the first day, I took a bit of

:06:34. > :06:38.getting into it, then I was fairly happy with the way I sailed

:06:38. > :06:41.yesterday and today. Couldn't be happier.

:06:41. > :06:45.Potato growers in Jersey have begun exporting one of the world's rarest

:06:45. > :06:48.varieties to the UK. La Bonnotte is usually grown on a French island

:06:49. > :06:52.off the country's west coast. But they're now produced in Jersey, too.

:06:52. > :06:58.Today the crop will go on sale for the first time in Tesco shops in

:06:58. > :07:03.the UK. Anisha Shah has been to see what all the fuss is about.

:07:03. > :07:06.Move over, Jersey Royals, a new spud's in town. This is the La

:07:06. > :07:09.Bonnotte being dug up, considered to be the caviar of the potato

:07:09. > :07:14.world. They're normally grown in France, but these have been

:07:14. > :07:21.cultivated here on Jersey soil. And they're on sale in the UK today,

:07:21. > :07:26.where it's expected they'll fetch a high price. It is only harvested

:07:26. > :07:30.for a very short period. Therefore, because of the reduced tonnage, the

:07:30. > :07:35.shape of the potato, the characteristics, means it has to be

:07:35. > :07:44.hand lifted and carefully looked after. It is a small, niche market.

:07:44. > :07:52.It becomes almost like a celebrity potato. So from this, to this, the

:07:52. > :07:55.Finnish bag. The question is, how do they taste? Andrew Baird, a chef

:07:55. > :07:59.at Longueville Manor, boiled our Jersey Royals and La Bonnottes with

:07:59. > :08:09.a knob of Jersey butter, to be offered out in St Helier. But first,

:08:09. > :08:13.

:08:13. > :08:22.which did he prefer? Flavoursome. Very unique. But for me, not as

:08:22. > :08:30.good as love Bonnotte. I prefer love Bonnotte. Which do you prefer?

:08:30. > :08:36.That one. It is still a potato. Here in Jersey, it seems the good

:08:36. > :08:39.old fashioned Jersey Royal is still ahead with the locals.

:08:39. > :08:43.And finally, 100 people in Jersey turned up to watch high tide at St

:08:43. > :08:46.Aubin's Bay last night. They were hoping to see it wash away some

:08:46. > :08:53.clever sand sculptures, but as Amy Harris reports, their hopes were

:08:53. > :08:56.dashed. It's a sandcastle on another level.

:08:56. > :09:06.This is one of four intricate scultures lovingly created by a man

:09:06. > :09:08.

:09:08. > :09:13.aptly nicknamed the Sand Wizard. is just practice and dedication.

:09:13. > :09:18.And you just have to keep trying hard at it. I had the nickname Mr

:09:18. > :09:20.smooth, because the surface of my sculptures is so smooth. But with a

:09:20. > :09:30.rising tide, their hours were numbered. Last night, dozens of

:09:30. > :09:36.

:09:36. > :09:42.people watched and waited for the But they didn't! Just the bottom

:09:42. > :09:47.bit fell down. I would like to have seen it all down. The whole lot

:09:47. > :09:52.would not collapse, but I would have expected a little bit more. I

:09:52. > :09:54.am amazed at how much it stood up to. Although the sculptures are

:09:54. > :10:02.still standing, with hide tide again tonight, that won't be the

:10:02. > :10:06.case for much longer. If you are heading down there

:10:06. > :10:09.deceiving, to see those doctors get washed away, let us see if you will

:10:09. > :10:12.washed away, let us see if you will get washed away as well. -- those

:10:12. > :10:18.sculptures. The war is still with us for the

:10:18. > :10:22.next couple of days but it will cool down. -- warmth. More of a

:10:22. > :10:27.breeze developing and also some rain coming in, especially for the

:10:27. > :10:32.estate. At the moment, we will get a few showers this evening, most

:10:32. > :10:36.the fading away overnight tonight. Another weather system poised to

:10:36. > :10:42.move in towards the end of the day. Wednesday night into Thursday,

:10:42. > :10:46.would be with us for a good part of the morning on Thursday morning.

:10:46. > :10:50.This evening and today, patchy cloud but some clear skies, the

:10:50. > :10:55.small chance of one or two showers up to the North, temperatures no

:10:55. > :11:01.lower than 15 degrees. Tomorrow, we should have some decent weather,

:11:01. > :11:07.all the wood will be rather cloudy to start with. Improving in the

:11:07. > :11:10.afternoon, 23 or 24 Celsius the highest temperature. Gentle winds

:11:10. > :11:14.from the west or south-west. Coastal waters forecast is

:11:14. > :11:21.generally good visibility. Perhaps a little Mr round the coast first

:11:21. > :11:31.thing. The wind west or south- westerly 3-4. Here are the times of

:11:31. > :11:36.high water. For our surface, not a great deal of surf, expect more of

:11:36. > :11:42.that later this week. The forecast all the way through and including

:11:42. > :11:46.Saturday, it is a mixture. On Thursday, expected to be quite wet.

:11:46. > :11:51.That band of rain should clear through the afternoon, so perhaps a

:11:52. > :11:57.little bit brighter it. Mainly dry on Friday with some sunny spells,

:11:57. > :12:00.with the outside chance of one or two showers. On Saturday, cooler

:12:00. > :12:07.conditions and some of the showers coming along quite regularly

:12:07. > :12:13.through the day. Potential for more through the day. Potential for more

:12:13. > :12:17.showers on Sunday. A 100 pound a Jersey bank note has

:12:17. > :12:24.been the least to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. It will feature a
