:00:21. > :00:27.bear in the Arctic. We speak to Patrick Flinders' father. I said,

:00:27. > :00:31.do not tell me he is dead. He said, he is injured. I said, that is good

:00:31. > :00:34.enough for me. Olympic dreams, but find out what

:00:34. > :00:36.this Channel Islander has to get over before she even gets to the

:00:36. > :00:39.Olympics. And closer to home, Guernsey

:00:49. > :00:54.

:00:54. > :01:00.It Jersey teenager has been seriously injured trying to save a

:01:00. > :01:03.friend from a polar bear attack. 16-year-old Patrick Flinders was

:01:03. > :01:10.one of three Channel Islanders on a trip to the Arctic, organised by

:01:10. > :01:13.the British Schools Exploring Society. A polar bear attacked one

:01:13. > :01:19.group this morning as they camped, killing one 17-year-old boy and

:01:19. > :01:23.injuring four other people including Patrick.

:01:23. > :01:26.Training for the trip of a lifetime. Patrick Flinders pictured before he

:01:26. > :01:35.set off to explore the Svalbard Islands, off the north coast of

:01:35. > :01:37.Norway. Little did Patrick and his team know what lay in store. A

:01:37. > :01:43.polar bear attack early this morning which killed one teenager

:01:43. > :01:46.and seriously injured four others, including Patrick. At home in

:01:46. > :01:56.Jersey, Patrick's dad Terry could only watch the news roll in just

:01:56. > :01:56.

:01:56. > :02:03.hours after getting the phone call every parent dreads. I said, do not

:02:03. > :02:07.tell me he is dead. He said, he is injured. I said, that is good

:02:07. > :02:10.enough for me. The polar bear attacked Patrick and

:02:11. > :02:15.his friends as they lay asleep in their tent. Patrick had famously

:02:15. > :02:19.boasted that he was not scared of polar bears before he set off. True

:02:19. > :02:26.to his word, he stood between the animal and a team mate, punching it

:02:26. > :02:32.to save his friend, before of the creature turned on him.

:02:32. > :02:39.He was trying to fend off the Polar Bear by hitting it on the nose. Why,

:02:39. > :02:44.I do not know. But he did. And the polar bear attacked him. With his

:02:44. > :02:47.right pop, across his face and his arm.

:02:47. > :02:50.The polar bear that attacked the group was eventually shot. Patrick

:02:50. > :02:53.is now in hospital in Norway where his condition is not to described

:02:53. > :02:59.as life threatening. Terry is hoping to have him home within a

:02:59. > :03:03.week. Patrick was not the only Channel

:03:03. > :03:09.Islander on the expedition. Herm teenager Richard Bailey was also

:03:09. > :03:13.there. He was not injured and has now been taken off the ice. The 17-

:03:13. > :03:16.year-old Kyle Gouveira from Jersey was on the trip as well. He was

:03:16. > :03:26.sent home early because he suffered severe frost nip in the extreme

:03:26. > :03:27.

:03:27. > :03:34.Arctic conditions. I spoke to Kyle a little earlier and asked him how

:03:34. > :03:38.much training the group was given against polar bears. We had a

:03:38. > :03:48.training weekend a few months ago. We learnt about rifles, how to

:03:48. > :03:52.

:03:52. > :03:56.clean them, how to fire them. We learnt about watching forebears.

:03:56. > :04:06.And we did some practice bear what is it do the night just to get a

:04:06. > :04:07.

:04:07. > :04:13.feel. -- bear watches through the night. It could have been used. How

:04:13. > :04:18.do you feel about that? I am a little traumatised to think

:04:18. > :04:25.that it could have been me. I was lucky to be sent home. I had frost

:04:25. > :04:31.nip, but luckily I did not lose my fingers. The group that got

:04:31. > :04:34.attacked will be very scared, I am not sure exactly. Probably mixed

:04:34. > :04:39.emotions, and all of the other groups as well because there are a

:04:39. > :04:43.lot of groups, and they will be worried if it will happen to them.

:04:43. > :04:48.Do you have any there -- any regrets?

:04:48. > :04:55.I have no regrets and I thoroughly enjoyed it and I knew what the

:04:55. > :04:58.risks were. It is a freak accident. But I learnt so much.

:04:58. > :05:01.In other news today, up to ten people face losing their jobs at

:05:01. > :05:04.Jersey Pottery. The ceramics company, which employs 200 staff,

:05:04. > :05:09.is selling its main site which has been in the Gorey village since

:05:09. > :05:13.1946. The building will belong to Dandara Properties from spring next

:05:13. > :05:18.year. Jersey Pottery will close down its pottery making factory on

:05:18. > :05:27.site. Jonathan Jones, the director, says it is a shame but staff will

:05:27. > :05:30.You are watching the BBC in the Channel Islands. Later in Spotlight

:05:30. > :05:40.with Justin and Victoria, take a look at this unusual animal spotted

:05:40. > :05:43.

:05:43. > :05:47.The London Olympics might be a year away but crunch time comes a lot

:05:47. > :05:50.sooner for one Channel Islands hopefuls. Badminton player

:05:50. > :05:53.Elisabeth Cann from Jersey has to breeze through the World

:05:53. > :05:58.Championships first. The competition starts on Monday and

:05:58. > :06:04.could gain Elizabeth a vital point for her Olympic qualifying campaign.

:06:04. > :06:09.Our correspondent has been to watch her train in Milton Keynes.

:06:09. > :06:12.Intensive training for England from just 13 years old. Elisabeth Cann

:06:12. > :06:15.is working up to the London Olympics but to have a chance of

:06:15. > :06:25.hitting a home victory there, she needs to smash some sets at the

:06:25. > :06:25.

:06:25. > :06:32.World Championships. They are major championships and there there is a

:06:32. > :06:37.lot of ranking towards Olympic qualifying so it is important.

:06:37. > :06:46.that an indicator for 2012? Not so much an indicator but if you

:06:46. > :06:50.do well, I'd caused in your favour. It helps with your world ranking. -

:06:51. > :06:53.- it goes in your favour. England's number one singles

:06:53. > :06:56.champion and just claiming the team and individual bronze medals at

:06:56. > :07:00.last year's Commonwealth Games, the pressure is on for her. The titles

:07:00. > :07:08.are testament to her drive from a young age which she did not feel

:07:08. > :07:12.the Channel Islands could support. There are not the support structure

:07:12. > :07:16.has in place in the island, and you need other people to play. With a

:07:16. > :07:25.back injury now behind her, cutting a fighting form is still a mighty

:07:25. > :07:29.task but one she is tackling head- How important are the Olympics?

:07:29. > :07:32.That would be the absolute pinnacle of everything. Hitting the right

:07:32. > :07:36.shots will certainly bring her Olympic dream a step closer to

:07:36. > :07:41.reality. The most important development in

:07:41. > :07:43.Guernsey sport in the last century. That is how Guernsey FC's entry

:07:43. > :07:51.into the Combined Counties Football League Division One is being

:07:51. > :07:54.described. The first match of the season kicks off tomorrow.

:07:54. > :08:01.Training hard ahead of their first competitive match against Knaphill

:08:01. > :08:05.FC. Win or lose, the result will go down in history as Guernsey FC

:08:05. > :08:09.start a new chapter in local football. More than 1,000 fans are

:08:09. > :08:18.expected to fill the stands to witness it. Along with the support

:08:18. > :08:26.team that have helped them get there. There will be nerves. The

:08:26. > :08:33.whole place will be in -- gripped with excitement. We are waiting to

:08:33. > :08:39.say who gets there with the selection. But whoever gets a

:08:39. > :08:43.starting shirt, I think the support will be there. We are very excited.

:08:44. > :08:49.Based on the support we have had during the friendlies, I hope to

:08:49. > :08:53.see all of those new friends again. It is not only the players that

:08:53. > :09:01.have been putting in the effort ahead of the game. Work has also

:09:01. > :09:08.been taking place to make sure the pitches up to scratch.

:09:08. > :09:13.It is not just me doing it. We have had good comments were lately. We

:09:13. > :09:15.will see if the comments could coming as the season progresses!

:09:16. > :09:19.recent friendly matches are anything to go by, Guernsey should

:09:19. > :09:22.have plenty of home support and as the players will only get one

:09:22. > :09:32.chance to win the Scot's first ever competitive match, every chant will

:09:32. > :09:33.

:09:33. > :09:38.be appreciated. The weekend is finally here. But in

:09:38. > :09:48.Alderney, every day has felt like Friday this week. There have been

:09:48. > :10:05.

:10:06. > :10:15.par rates and parties. Emma Thomas This weekend is definitely the

:10:15. > :10:20.weekend to go to Alderney. There there are lots of free activities.

:10:20. > :10:25.This team are waiting for the raft race to begin.

:10:25. > :10:33.We are very serious about not coming first.

:10:33. > :10:38.There was serious cheating, mostly by the police.

:10:39. > :10:43.The lifeboat, pouring oil of her troubled waters. After a bit more

:10:43. > :10:47.cheating, and a lot of scrambling, the pirates were first over the

:10:47. > :10:53.line. We did a lot of work for this. We

:10:53. > :11:01.all took 10, tying a rope, topping the water melon to throw at the

:11:01. > :11:06.lifeboats. It was hard work but we got there.

:11:06. > :11:12.What does it feel like to win? was great.

:11:12. > :11:22.The population of old and a doubles during the festival. Here are the

:11:22. > :11:47.

:11:47. > :11:56.I want to be in that raft race next year. Now let's get a look at the

:11:56. > :12:00.We can expect some rain in the form of showers on Saturday and Sunday.

:12:00. > :12:08.There may well be more persistent rain tomorrow afternoon, coming up

:12:08. > :12:15.from the South. Looking at the big picture, there are areas of low

:12:15. > :12:21.pressure surrounding, and no sign of things settle in. This high

:12:21. > :12:29.pressure ridge will not stay and deliver -- these areas of low

:12:29. > :12:33.pressure will generate showers. Perhaps even more persistent rain.

:12:33. > :12:41.Through Sunday, after a fine start, you will see a scattering of

:12:41. > :12:46.showers. Overnight, fairly quiet. One or two showers but mainly dry

:12:46. > :12:51.with quite a lot of cloud. Temperatures down to 13 or 14

:12:51. > :12:55.degrees. There will be some brightness tomorrow, and perhaps in

:12:55. > :13:00.the middle of the afternoon the risk of more persistent rain before

:13:00. > :13:10.the sunshine comes back out. 19 degrees will be the highest

:13:10. > :13:14.

:13:14. > :13:24.temperature. Here is the coastal waters forecast. Times of high

:13:24. > :13:34.water now. Messy conditions for surfers, up to around two are three

:13:34. > :13:34.

:13:34. > :13:39.feet. Continuing risk of showers for Sunday. Increasingly breezy

:13:39. > :13:46.with some had -- some heavy showers and the risk of some thunder in the
