:00:11. > :00:16.Good evening and welcome. Tonight we have the latest on the multiple
:00:16. > :00:24.stabbings in St Helier as the police start piecing together why
:00:24. > :00:29., were murdered. We have got six victims who met their deaths there
:00:29. > :00:34.yesterday afternoon and me and my staff are working hard to establish
:00:34. > :00:38.the facts bulls star up plus a community in shock as friends and
:00:38. > :00:43.neighbours tried to come to terms with the horror. It is really sad
:00:43. > :00:53.what has happened. It has never happened in Jersey before. It is
:00:53. > :01:00.
:01:00. > :01:04.especially sad because it is Polish Police in Jersey are still trying
:01:04. > :01:08.to piece together how six people, three of them children, were killed
:01:08. > :01:13.in a knife attack in St Helier yesterday. Police were called to a
:01:13. > :01:17.flat in Victoria Crescent just after 3 o'clock in the afternoon. A
:01:17. > :01:22.30-year-old man has been arrested and is in hospital after undergoing
:01:22. > :01:28.surgery. Police confirmed two families were involved. Edwards
:01:28. > :01:31.told is that the scene. What is the latest? There is still shock and
:01:31. > :01:36.disbelief in this neighbourhood as residents and the police come to
:01:36. > :01:40.terms with what happened. Victoria presence in Upper Midvale Road in
:01:40. > :01:44.St Helier remain sealed off tonight as the police and local strike to
:01:44. > :01:50.piece together yesterday's shocking events. The it should have been
:01:50. > :01:54.acquired, summer's Sunday afternoon, but just after 3 o'clock the
:01:54. > :01:58.relative calm and tranquillity of this leafy part of St Helier was
:01:59. > :02:02.transformed into an horrific crimes in. I was just finishing the garden
:02:02. > :02:07.and my father and I were sitting out here and we heard these
:02:07. > :02:12.children screaming. It was real screening. He said to me, what was
:02:13. > :02:18.that? I said it was children screaming. It was not like a
:02:18. > :02:20.playful scream. They were really screaming. Today the police
:02:20. > :02:28.described the traumatic scene emergency services came face-to-
:02:28. > :02:38.face with. Paramedics and police officers as they arrived treated
:02:38. > :02:38.
:02:38. > :02:42.some of victims outside Victoria Crescent on the present itself, and
:02:42. > :02:47.the other victims were found inside the premises. There were initially
:02:47. > :02:51.two who were found outside and four inside. As the police try to piece
:02:51. > :02:57.together what happened, today they confirmed that one of the families
:02:57. > :03:01.involved was of Polish origin. Indications are that one of the
:03:01. > :03:06.families was Polish. I am not in a position to elaborate further on
:03:06. > :03:12.the relationships between either the suspect or the victims.
:03:13. > :03:20.Hopefully, you understand, it is important that we make contacts
:03:20. > :03:24.with the broader family. I do not want them hearing about this, with
:03:24. > :03:27.the greatest respect, through the media. I wanted to hear about it
:03:27. > :03:30.from my staff will start those living in this neighbourhood say
:03:30. > :03:35.they have been deeply affected by the events that have unfolded on
:03:35. > :03:39.their doorstep and they are shocked. This is a very quiet, happy
:03:39. > :03:47.neighbourhood. For something like this to happen is really shocking.
:03:47. > :03:51.Really shocked, really sad. I think everyone I know it like families
:03:51. > :03:57.and things like this had never happened in Jersey and I am still
:03:57. > :04:02.shaking, it is unbelievable. I knew them because they were shopping
:04:02. > :04:08.here and I knew them over the years because it is a small community.
:04:08. > :04:11.Everybody knows everybody. This lunchtime two recovery trucks
:04:11. > :04:17.arrived at the scene on Upper Midvale Road. They took away a car
:04:17. > :04:20.covered in silver sheeting for further investigations. Not far
:04:20. > :04:26.away flowers were laid to remember those who lost their lives here so
:04:26. > :04:32.tragically. Do we know any more about the
:04:32. > :04:36.victims this evening? Yes, details have been emerging throughout the
:04:37. > :04:41.day about the six people who were killed yesterday afternoon. The six
:04:41. > :04:44.victims were from two different families. The first family, her
:04:45. > :04:49.mother and her two young children and the women's father are believed
:04:49. > :04:53.to be Polish citizens will stop the second, a mother and daughter, are
:04:53. > :04:59.mixed Jersey and Polish citizens. None of the names have been
:04:59. > :05:02.released. The police still have somebody in custody? Yes, we
:05:02. > :05:06.understand the man under police guard in Jersey General Hospital is
:05:06. > :05:13.to be questioned over the murder of his two children, wife and father-
:05:13. > :05:16.in-law, along with a family friend and her daughter. A 30-year-old man
:05:16. > :05:23.has been arrested, but the police have not yet been able to question
:05:23. > :05:27.him. As the police continue their investigation, the community is
:05:27. > :05:31.trying to deal with what has happened on the streets of St
:05:31. > :05:36.Helier. Shock and shame are two emissions that are emerging among
:05:36. > :05:41.many people. Churches have been held in special services today to
:05:41. > :05:44.help islanders cope with the trauma of the event.
:05:44. > :05:50.As Jersey's community tries to come to terms with what has happened,
:05:50. > :05:55.the island's gentle way of life feels tense, emotions are raw, and
:05:55. > :06:00.today people look on searching for answers, but all there is his death,
:06:00. > :06:05.shock and disbelief. It is really sad what has happened. It has never
:06:05. > :06:14.happened in Jersey before. It is especially sad because it is Polish
:06:14. > :06:21.people and children. And the youngest one was two years old.
:06:21. > :06:26.This is really unacceptable. It is just a terrible tragedy. There is a
:06:26. > :06:30.book of condolence at the town hall which some hope will help numb the
:06:30. > :06:32.pain. The stabbings are being reported around the world and for
:06:33. > :06:38.the Polish community the brittle headlines have prompted an
:06:38. > :06:41.outpouring of grief and anger. On Polish websites Polish people in St
:06:41. > :06:46.Helier are talking about the shame it is bringing their community,
:06:46. > :06:51.about the anger that so many people have been killed, and that is why
:06:51. > :06:56.Jersey's chief of police call for calm today. Such an incident will
:06:56. > :07:00.raise tensions locally and I appeal to everyone to remain calm and
:07:00. > :07:04.dignified and allow my officers to continue with what is a complex,
:07:04. > :07:08.demanding and very difficult investigation. In the Polish
:07:08. > :07:16.delicatessens, discussion turns to discuss as they contemplate the
:07:16. > :07:20.horrific events that took place. are in shock about what happened.
:07:20. > :07:28.In Jersey something like this has never happened. It is a shame it
:07:28. > :07:37.for the Polish people. I am in shock as well. I do not know what
:07:37. > :07:41.he is doing. The Polish community is terrified and ashamed, a shames
:07:41. > :07:47.interestingly because they were Polish, because that person was
:07:47. > :07:52.Polish, and because there are about 5000 Polish people in Joseph. We
:07:52. > :07:57.want to be accepted. How can a winded community begin to hear
:07:57. > :08:03.itself? Is it too early? I am sure they will fill this personally and
:08:03. > :08:06.this sense of shame as well as deep sorrow that this all happened among
:08:06. > :08:14.people who as Catholic Christians uphold the value of life and the
:08:14. > :08:19.dignity of the human person. community gets behind bringing a
:08:19. > :08:23.sense of closure to the suffering families and friends and offer
:08:23. > :08:30.support in the way of counselling or anything else. In the weeks and
:08:30. > :08:35.days ahead, which will continue to be difficult, but also we should
:08:35. > :08:39.let the police handled this matter. The horror of six deaths on this
:08:39. > :08:47.holiday island is still sinking in and for many here it will be
:08:47. > :08:50.something they will never forget. These events have shocked everybody
:08:50. > :08:55.and the fact three children were killed has added to the sense of
:08:55. > :08:58.horror, but for friends, neighbours and those first on the scene it
:08:58. > :09:03.must have been a particularly difficult time. Earlier, Boyd
:09:03. > :09:08.Bennie, the director of Jersey's Samaritans came into the studio,
:09:08. > :09:11.and I asked him how the paramedics and police could have been affected.
:09:11. > :09:17.It must have been very distressing and sometimes people who have been
:09:17. > :09:20.in very distressing situations like that have flashbacks occurring
:09:20. > :09:25.afterwards that may disturb their pattern of sleep. That is why it is
:09:25. > :09:28.very important to be able to talk to someone. The Samaritans are
:09:28. > :09:33.always there on the end of the phone. We have had reports from
:09:33. > :09:39.neighbours who heard the children screaming. What would you say to
:09:39. > :09:42.them? They must have a great sense of helplessness I suppose.
:09:42. > :09:46.helplessness sometimes makes people very anxious. They feel they should
:09:46. > :09:51.have done something, could have done something, or perhaps they
:09:51. > :09:55.feel worried about their own safety. Again it is very important to be
:09:55. > :10:00.able to talk to someone and offload some of that stress and anxiety,
:10:00. > :10:04.which is what the Samaritans do a. His is something that happens
:10:04. > :10:09.immediately, or does it take a while for the shop and the horror
:10:09. > :10:16.to sink him? It can take a little while. It can take days, maybe even
:10:16. > :10:21.longer. Although there will be help, a lot of agencies, immediately
:10:21. > :10:25.after the event, those made tend to disappear after a while and that is
:10:25. > :10:30.when it is important to know there is still someone who people can
:10:30. > :10:35.talk to and the Samaritans are always there. Boyd Bennie from the
:10:35. > :10:38.Samaritans. Turning to today's avenues and a Guernsey man is
:10:38. > :10:44.recovering in hospital after being involved in a crash at the
:10:44. > :10:47.weekend's sand racing. This fitted captured the moment that NIgel
:10:47. > :10:51.Ozanne's car spun out of control and turned over on Saturday
:10:51. > :10:57.afternoon. He is not thought to be in a serious condition. Organisers
:10:57. > :11:01.say it lessons will be learnt. we deal with a series accent --
:11:01. > :11:06.accident like this one, they will be a debriefing once we speak to
:11:06. > :11:11.Nigel to see what he has to say about it. He was the closest to the
:11:11. > :11:16.scene. We will be speaking to him and if there is anything that needs
:11:16. > :11:19.to be changed or amended to the rules, we will be doing it.
:11:19. > :11:26.Residents near Guernsey's airport have the opportunity to learn more
:11:26. > :11:30.about the plans for the runway. Dropping Sassoon's are being held.
:11:30. > :11:35.The public have less than a fortnight to have their say.
:11:35. > :11:40.The RNLI is urging people in Jersey not to use distress flares unless
:11:40. > :11:44.there is a real emergency. Lifeboat crews were called on Saturday night
:11:44. > :11:53.after flares were seen on the north coast. Nothing was found following
:11:53. > :11:57.an extensive search. Now, the There is some unsettled and wet
:11:57. > :12:02.weather in the forecast for the week ahead. It does not mean it
:12:02. > :12:08.will rain all the time. We have had high pressure today, but to the
:12:08. > :12:12.west this low-pressure is moving in. Overnight tonight we will see some
:12:12. > :12:16.rain arriving. Tomorrow it will bring in some moist air and some
:12:16. > :12:20.drizzle throughout the day. By Wednesday there is a bit of
:12:20. > :12:24.uncertainty over what this weather front is going to do. It still
:12:24. > :12:29.looks fairly cloudy with a risk of some rain fall in the middle of the
:12:29. > :12:34.week. Tonight is as much milder, but with a lot of cloud around and
:12:34. > :12:42.outbreaks of rain. Fairly light winds from the south-west by the
:12:42. > :12:46.end of the night. Pretty mild. A grey and a damp start to the date
:12:46. > :12:55.tomorrow. The main area of rain moves away fairly quickly. Try for
:12:55. > :13:05.most of us in the afternoon. There will be a few spots of drizzle. Out
:13:05. > :13:15.at sea the winds are from the south-west. The times of high
:13:15. > :13:27.
:13:27. > :13:31.The surf is generally choppy. After a fairly dab day tomorrow we still
:13:31. > :13:35.have a fair amount of cloud around for Wednesday and arrest of some
:13:35. > :13:39.rain later on in the dead. By Thursday we will see some
:13:39. > :13:49.brightness, although still the chance of a shower. By Friday it
:13:49. > :13:52.
:13:52. > :13:56.will become one again. -- warmer again. Back to our main story and
:13:56. > :13:59.the death of six people in a stabbing incident in St Helier
:13:59. > :14:04.yesterday it will stop Mike Wilkins has been following the story. What
:14:04. > :14:08.is the latest? It has been a fast developing story ever since we got
:14:08. > :14:13.word of the rising numbers of dead. The police told us that Jersey is
:14:13. > :14:16.one of the safest places in the Western world, but that is little
:14:16. > :14:20.comfort for friends and family who are coming to terms with their
:14:20. > :14:25.losses, especially when so many of the victims were young. Murder in
:14:25. > :14:29.the Channel Islands is rare. There has not been a murder in Jersey for
:14:29. > :14:39.seven years, so to get six in one afternoon is beyond belief. There
:14:39. > :14:40.
:14:41. > :14:50.will be a special, a Catholic Mass on church on Thursday. If you would
