:00:06. > :00:09.Good evening, and welcome to BBC Channel Islands. The top stories

:00:09. > :00:15.this Thursday evening: The waiting's over as our students

:00:15. > :00:17.celebrate their GCSE result success. Plus police investigating the St

:00:17. > :00:25.Helier stabbings begin questioning their major suspect as tributes

:00:25. > :00:35.continue to arrive for the victims. And the sun shone as the crowds

:00:35. > :00:46.

:00:46. > :00:51.were wowed by all that Guernsey's Today, after a long wait, thousands

:00:51. > :00:55.of students received their GCSE results. In Jersey, the results

:00:55. > :00:59.come months after some schools were rocked by claims they were under-

:00:59. > :01:04.achieving. We will speak to Jersey's educational department in

:01:04. > :01:09.a moment. First, Mike Wilkins reports on an important day for

:01:09. > :01:13.students in Jersey and Guernsey. For some, these envelopes provoke a

:01:13. > :01:17.flight response, with many heading off to their own corners to learn

:01:17. > :01:26.of their academic fate. Others are happy to share the moment with

:01:26. > :01:32.friends. You have to work for it, but as people get older,, actually,

:01:32. > :01:38.they are easier, just because they felt they had to work harder.

:01:38. > :01:44.got 13 A*s and one A, and he did not have to go far to find

:01:44. > :01:51.headline-grabbing results. Us this pupil got 15 A*s, including GCSEs

:01:51. > :01:55.in 15 -- five languages. I want to study medicine. Then I want to go

:01:55. > :01:59.to a Third World country and be a missionary. But it was not just the

:01:59. > :02:04.boys smiling for the cameras. There were plenty of top grades for the

:02:04. > :02:10.girls. I will go to university and do a science degree, but I'm not

:02:10. > :02:15.sure what I will do after that. have always wanted to do something

:02:15. > :02:21.medical. Not a doctor unnecessarily, but along those lines. It has been

:02:21. > :02:26.a good year for the Channel Islands. 75 % of the students achieved a

:02:26. > :02:31.starchy C grades this year, and both Islands beat the UK figure.

:02:31. > :02:41.Some did even better. Here at the convent school, pupils gained a 100

:02:41. > :02:46.% pass rate. I got four as, and five Bes. You never really know

:02:46. > :02:52.until you come out of the exam. I'm just relieved. Meanwhile, down the

:02:53. > :02:59.road at Haute Vallee, there were also smiles all round. I am very

:02:59. > :03:05.happy with how I did. I am going on to do art, and I got an A*, so I am

:03:05. > :03:09.quite happy. The smiles after what has been a turbulent year for the

:03:09. > :03:16.state school along with others in Jersey. In February, it emerged

:03:16. > :03:20.they performed worse that -- at GCSEs than almost all UK schools.

:03:20. > :03:25.But for the head of this scale, he says he can now retire happy.

:03:25. > :03:31.students are very pleased. Some were ecstatic. Some were quietly

:03:31. > :03:35.pleased. But so far I have not seen any who were unhappy. So we have a

:03:35. > :03:43.group of happy students. So the Channel Islands are still

:03:43. > :03:49.outperforming the UK, and were now, Guernsey has the bragging rights.

:03:49. > :03:53.Jim Westwater joins me in the studio now a. Mike was saying their

:03:53. > :03:58.that this is the second year in a row that Guernsey has outperformed

:03:58. > :04:02.Jersey. Is there any reason for this? They could be several reasons.

:04:02. > :04:10.We would have to look at the relative funding issues in Guernsey,

:04:10. > :04:18.and the structure of their education it is different. They

:04:18. > :04:23.still do the 11 plus. It may be looking at a different structure.

:04:23. > :04:28.You have had a controversial year in Jersey, with the Freedom of

:04:28. > :04:32.Information query that revealed that four state schools were

:04:32. > :04:42.performing worse at GCSE than most of the UK schools. How have we done

:04:42. > :04:43.

:04:43. > :04:48.the sheer? I would take a step back and say that the analysis on but is

:04:48. > :04:53.not a good one. We would have to look at our system, and if we have

:04:53. > :04:56.a very selective system, we will have different examination results.

:04:56. > :05:03.It is a bit like comparing the viewing figures for two different

:05:03. > :05:07.news programmes. But the structure favours one more than the other.

:05:07. > :05:12.The UK has released its school results. We have not yet. Is it

:05:12. > :05:16.because we want to focus on success rather than face criticism?

:05:17. > :05:21.Today is about pupils and it is about their success and getting the

:05:21. > :05:26.results out to them. What we want to do is make sure that we have

:05:26. > :05:31.everything right before we publish them. It will take a few weeks. We

:05:31. > :05:41.are a small department. But we do not want to be giving out results

:05:41. > :05:46.today and changing them a week down the line. We have the outcomes to

:05:46. > :05:51.consider and a lot of data to consider a. We need to celebrate

:05:51. > :05:54.success today, as you say. Thank you.

:05:54. > :05:59.So police are investigating the stabbing of six people in St Helier

:05:59. > :06:03.are questioning a man they arrested last week. The 30-year-old was a

:06:03. > :06:08.released from hospital yesterday when he was recovering from surgery.

:06:08. > :06:11.One week after Jersey was shaken by six stabbings, the police are

:06:11. > :06:17.questioning this man, Damian Rzeszowski, he was arrested last

:06:17. > :06:21.week and has remained under guard in Jersey's General Hospital. Staff

:06:21. > :06:25.here can now begin to rebuild after one of the island's biggest

:06:25. > :06:30.emergencies. Those involved are being offered counselling after the

:06:30. > :06:35.incident. It cost six people their lives, as today tributes continued

:06:35. > :06:40.to be paid to one of the victims, Marta de la Haye. She worked for

:06:40. > :06:45.the health service at St Saviour's hospital. Her colleagues talked

:06:45. > :06:49.very longingly and lovingly offer, on what a good worker she was. And

:06:49. > :06:54.highly respected by the staff. Not only the staff but patients and

:06:54. > :06:57.families as well. As police question Damian Rzeszowski, a

:06:57. > :07:04.Victoria Crescent Community Fund has been started for the families

:07:04. > :07:07.of those who died. A man in Jersey has been charged

:07:08. > :07:13.with causing death by dangerous driving after a fatal car crash

:07:13. > :07:18.earlier this year. It happened on St Clement coast road in February.

:07:18. > :07:23.Dita Paverniece, he was the passenger, was killed. The driver,

:07:23. > :07:29.Niall Linden, appeared in Jersey's Magistrates' Court yesterday where

:07:29. > :07:32.he reserved his plea. He will appear on October 5th. He was given

:07:32. > :07:35.10,000 bail. Guernsey police say it could take

:07:35. > :07:40.several weeks to establish the exact cause of death of a woman

:07:40. > :07:45.whose body was found in a flat in St Peter Port at the weekend. A man

:07:45. > :07:48.arrested in connection with the incident has been released without

:07:48. > :07:52.charge. Detectives say it is a complex case with many lines of

:07:52. > :07:56.inquiry. The number of people out of work

:07:56. > :08:04.for more than one year is rising in Jersey, one in five people are

:08:04. > :08:08.looking for a job. That compares to one in 61 month ago. The minister

:08:08. > :08:13.who oversees industries in Jersey says that downturn has affected job

:08:13. > :08:17.prospects. Crowds flocked to the North Show in

:08:17. > :08:23.Guernsey today. The event is in its 89th year.

:08:23. > :08:28.It was all smiles and sunshine this year. A far cry from last year's

:08:28. > :08:32.Reine event. Last year it nearly sunk us. We had two very wet days

:08:33. > :08:37.last year, we did not get the crowds or the income. We have had

:08:37. > :08:43.to work this year it to get the income to pay for this one. And it

:08:43. > :08:50.paid off. Everyone had their own reasons to come. It is fun, and

:08:50. > :08:58.there is a lot to do. I like the rides. I like the little shows they

:08:58. > :09:02.do in the big field in the middle. These birds are wide the crowd, and

:09:02. > :09:07.inside the tense it was like the Chelsea Flower Show. Away from the

:09:07. > :09:11.Sun, there was serious hard work going into the floats. Beth Gabriel

:09:11. > :09:16.was battling to get her last-minute entry ready in time. We are the

:09:16. > :09:23.only one in our class, but it is good just taking part. I love doing

:09:23. > :09:27.it. Soon, it was time for the off. As Guernsey's floral floats took

:09:27. > :09:33.centre stage, they did not disappoint. A colourful end to a

:09:33. > :09:40.colourful day. We will have more pictures of the

:09:40. > :09:44.We will have more pictures of the Let's take a look at the weather.

:09:44. > :09:48.More showers to come across the Channel Islands for the next couple

:09:48. > :09:52.of days. Some of them could be quite heavy weather Risk of Thunder.

:09:52. > :09:57.They will continue into the start of the weekend, though Sunday and

:09:57. > :10:01.Monday will be mainly dry. At the moment, we have an area of low

:10:01. > :10:05.pressure, very complex this, with bands of cloud and showers rotating

:10:05. > :10:09.around it. That will be with us for most of the night and most of

:10:09. > :10:15.tomorrow before it begins to move out of the ways. Towards the end of

:10:15. > :10:18.the day, the low-pressure moves away. Eventually, this area of high

:10:18. > :10:22.pressure will start to come in, although it will take its time.

:10:22. > :10:27.Still a risk of showers on Saturday, but they will have gone by Sunday

:10:27. > :10:30.and it will be brighter and dry a. Overnight, one or two of the

:10:30. > :10:34.showers could be heavy with the risk of thunder. And they will keep

:10:34. > :10:38.going right through the night to come. Temperatures down to about 13

:10:38. > :10:42.degrees Celsius. Tomorrow, heavy showers in the morning although

:10:42. > :10:49.they will die away from the South. Jersey will get the best of the

:10:49. > :10:55.weather tomorrow. Further north, quite frequent showers coming into

:10:55. > :11:01.Guernsey and Aldernay. Brisk westerly winds developing later in

:11:01. > :11:07.the day as well. It will start off as a south-westerly and become a

:11:07. > :11:17.westerly later. Visibility will be moderate or poor at sea. Here are

:11:17. > :11:24.

:11:24. > :11:29.Rather at choppy surface with that breeze. Two to three feet, on

:11:29. > :11:39.Saturday, fewer showers, they will fade away into evening. Sunday and

:11:39. > :11:45.

:11:45. > :11:49.Monday will both be dry and a bit Finally, Beckie Herbert has been in

:11:49. > :11:52.action again this evening in the semi-finals of the European

:11:52. > :11:58.Championships against the Netherlands. At the moment, they
