:00:05. > :00:08.Good evening and welcome to BBC News in the Channel Islands.

:00:08. > :00:12.Tonight's top stories: Charged with six murders - Damian

:00:12. > :00:16.Rzeszowski appears at Jersey's Magistrates' Court.

:00:16. > :00:21.Plus a second postmortem is held on Liga Verse, who died in suspicious

:00:21. > :00:31.circumstances in Guernsey. And we have highlights from

:00:31. > :00:56.

:00:56. > :00:59.Guernsey's North Show Battle of A 30-year old man has been charged

:00:59. > :01:02.with murdering six people including his wife and two children in Jersey.

:01:02. > :01:05.Damian Rzeszowski appeared at a special sitting of the Royal Court

:01:05. > :01:08.this afternoon, nearly two weeks after a crime which rocked a

:01:08. > :01:11.community. Beckie Williams reports. This was the scene on the afternoon

:01:11. > :01:13.of Sunday, 14th August. Six people were stabbed to death here in

:01:13. > :01:16.Victoria Crescent, a quiet residential street in St Helier.

:01:16. > :01:19.The oldest was 56, the youngest just two. Today this man, 30-year-

:01:19. > :01:21.old Damian Rzeszowski, was charged with their murders. In the ten-

:01:21. > :01:24.minute hearing here at the magistrates' court, Mr Rzeszowski

:01:24. > :01:26.didn't speak. As the charges were read out through a Polish

:01:27. > :01:29.translator, he stood in the dock flanked by two policemen, looking

:01:29. > :01:32.pale and with his head bowed. Mr Rzeszowski's appearance here today

:01:32. > :01:34.comes just 48 hours after his release from hospital where he'd

:01:35. > :01:37.received treatment following the incident. Tonight he left court in

:01:37. > :01:45.police custody, until his next appearance on 28th October at the

:01:45. > :01:53.Royal Court. Tomorrow will be his 31st birthday. He'll spend it in

:01:53. > :01:56.police custody. A second postmortem has been

:01:56. > :01:59.carried out this morning on the body of a young woman in Guernsey

:01:59. > :02:02.whose death remains unexplained. 24-year-old Liga Verse from Latvia

:02:02. > :02:08.was found by police in a flat in St Peter Port in suspicious

:02:08. > :02:12.circumstances. As the community comes to terms with the shocking

:02:12. > :02:18.discovery, a special service is to be held this weekend in memory of

:02:18. > :02:21.Liga. Mike Wilkins reports. After the shock of Liga's death,

:02:21. > :02:31.the uncertainty of how she died continues, and now, a week later,

:02:31. > :02:41.the community is reflecting on a young life cut short. It must be

:02:41. > :02:44.

:02:44. > :02:48.hard for her family to come here and see their daughter dead. I am

:02:49. > :02:52.sure she would have gone back to Matt the one day. A special service

:02:52. > :02:54.is being held at the town church on Sunday evening to remember Liga's

:02:54. > :03:02.life. And the man who'll be addressing the congregation says

:03:02. > :03:05.it'll be a good opportunity to support others in need. Events like

:03:05. > :03:11.this do draw communities together. People feel that they want to

:03:11. > :03:15.support other people who are in deep sadness, and particularly we

:03:15. > :03:19.hope that at this service there will be some support for Liga's

:03:19. > :03:26.family, as we understand it at the moment, they would like to

:03:26. > :03:30.repatriate her body for burial in Latvia. And if that is the case,

:03:30. > :03:34.then it will be a very expensive operation to return the body to

:03:34. > :03:38.that fear. It's still unclear how Liga died. A 27-year-old local man

:03:38. > :03:42.who was questioned by the police has been released on bail. But as

:03:42. > :03:50.the investigations continue, so do the prayers. Liga may be gone but

:03:50. > :03:52.her memory lives on. New technology in Guernsey means

:03:52. > :03:58.drugs containing potentially lethal chemicals can be more quickly

:03:58. > :04:01.identified. A new machine has only been in the island a month and it's

:04:01. > :04:04.already had a find. Emma Thomas reports.

:04:04. > :04:09.On our streets, this cocaine seized in Guernsey has a bit more than

:04:09. > :04:12.users bargained for - a lethal compound. Drugs brought to this lab

:04:12. > :04:16.recently were found to be laced with a substance used to worm

:04:16. > :04:19.animals. The machine behind me picked up that the cocaine was

:04:19. > :04:24.laced with levamisole, a toxic chemical that can affect the immune

:04:24. > :04:26.system with potentially lethal consequences. We can actually

:04:27. > :04:30.detect small amounts or large amounts of these impurities, and we

:04:30. > :04:34.do check them. It's important for public health that we are aware

:04:34. > :04:36.what's in the drugs circulating in the island. The detection has

:04:36. > :04:42.allowed Guernsey's Health Department to send out a warning to

:04:42. > :04:46.drug users in the island. People have died from it, particularly in

:04:46. > :04:51.the USA. It is a drug that is potentially toxic. It can knock

:04:51. > :04:53.your bone marrow, stop it working and that can lead to death. This

:04:53. > :05:00.equipment will mean courts have access to even more reliable

:05:00. > :05:02.information about the dangers drugs pose.

:05:02. > :05:06.Jersey's former Health Minister Senator Ben Shenton has announced

:05:06. > :05:08.he won't be running for re-election in October. Senator Shenton says

:05:08. > :05:11.he's become increasingly frustrated with ministerial government and

:05:11. > :05:17.what he calls overpaid Deputies who waste time and speak at length on

:05:17. > :05:20.every subject in the States. He was first sworn in as a Senator in 2005,

:05:20. > :05:26.and despite standing down for now, he hasn't ruled out returning to

:05:26. > :05:30.politics in the future. It's hoped the Red Arrows will

:05:30. > :05:33.perform at Jersey and Guernsey's air shows next month. Hawk T1

:05:33. > :05:36.aircraft have been given clearance by the Ministry of Defence to

:05:36. > :05:40.resume flying. They were grounded last week after a 33-year-old pilot

:05:40. > :05:43.died following a display in Bournemouth. Organisers in both

:05:43. > :05:46.islands say a full show will still go ahead with or without them, but

:05:46. > :05:52.if they do perform, they will pay tribute to Flight Lieutenant Jon

:05:52. > :05:56.Egging. You're watching the BBC in the

:05:56. > :05:59.Channel Islands. Later in Spotlight with Justin and Natalie: A very

:05:59. > :06:09.special first day at school is coming up for this miracle boy who

:06:09. > :06:09.

:06:09. > :06:12.And it's Friday so time for our "free Friday" feature, when we

:06:12. > :06:15.showcase things to do in the islands that are either free or

:06:15. > :06:18.cost very little. Our reporter Beckie Williams went to see some

:06:18. > :06:28.musicians warming up for an epic performance in 12 pubs across the

:06:28. > :06:53.

:06:54. > :06:58.Just a taster of music from one local band. If you want to hear

:06:58. > :07:03.more of this, you can. This is just one band performing in pubs across

:07:03. > :07:07.Josie this weekend. Why did you come up with the idea? I just

:07:07. > :07:11.finished playing a gig with Andy and I thought I would like to play

:07:11. > :07:16.a gig in every pub in Jersey one day. I thought about the logistics

:07:16. > :07:22.of this, getting from one pub to another would be quite a hassle, so

:07:22. > :07:28.I decided to have 12 acts doing it and the bans could move around.

:07:28. > :07:32.Andy suggested we would do it for a charity, so we thought help a Josie

:07:32. > :07:37.child is a local charity. There will be but it's available but

:07:37. > :07:42.entry will be free. This gives performers a chance for more

:07:42. > :07:47.exposure. Chris is one of those. You have a strange instrument here.

:07:47. > :07:54.I hope people will appreciate seeing this out and about. It is

:07:54. > :07:59.something I bought in London, only one of 12 in existence. Rival take

:07:59. > :08:03.it out to see what people think of it. Is it hard to play? It is very

:08:03. > :08:06.hard to play but it is a lot of fun and catches people's attention.

:08:06. > :08:11.if you want to see this and plenty of other performers and their

:08:11. > :08:15.instruments, come to pubs across Josie this weekend from 11am on

:08:15. > :08:17.Sunday. The Battle of Flowers was held

:08:17. > :08:21.yesterday in Guernsey and the community made such an effort that

:08:21. > :08:31.we thought we'd show you some highlights to set you up for the

:08:31. > :08:31.

:08:31. > :09:47.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 76 seconds

:09:47. > :09:51.Now here is a weekend weather with Good evening. We're fat some

:09:51. > :09:56.sunshine across the Channel Islands today. Tomorrow, more of the same

:09:56. > :09:59.but the risk of showers. It is still low pressure. We are between

:09:59. > :10:02.weather systems this evening was stop the tail end of this line of

:10:02. > :10:07.shares could clip was later on tonight. The low-pressure beginning

:10:07. > :10:11.to move away from us by midday tomorrow. The weekend improves.

:10:11. > :10:16.Through Saturday there is the risk of a sham. On Sunday, the risk is

:10:16. > :10:19.much reduced as the area of high pressure moves across the eye lens.

:10:19. > :10:24.Bringing the sunshine back out. It will probably last until the early

:10:25. > :10:31.part of next week. Overnight, the risk of a few showers can most of

:10:31. > :10:34.which will fade away overnight. A few isolated light showers by dawn.

:10:34. > :10:38.Tomorrow, we can expect those showers perhaps more widespread and

:10:38. > :10:42.frequent and we have seen today. But by the afternoon, they become

:10:42. > :10:47.very isolated. The second half of the day becomes mainly dry apart

:10:47. > :10:57.from one or two of their showers. Winds from the north-west and 17

:10:57. > :11:20.

:11:20. > :11:23.and 18 degrees the highest The forecast all the way through,

:11:23. > :11:28.including the start of next week, is much improved. I think on Sunday

:11:28. > :11:33.we will have sunny spells, patchy cloud. At times quite a lot of

:11:33. > :11:36.cloud, but we will see temperatures rise was that much Writer wins for

:11:36. > :11:45.Monday and Tuesday. Quite a lot of cloud around but relatively dry and

:11:45. > :11:48.There's a mouth-watering opening match for Channel Island tennis
