:00:17. > :00:19.Good evening. Welcome. A top stories tonight... -- our. A

:00:19. > :00:21.prescription for better patient facilities as Jersey's Government

:00:22. > :00:25.proposes an injection of cash for St Saviour's Hospital. Plus mystery

:00:25. > :00:28.still surrounds the death of Liga Verse as friends and family join to

:00:28. > :00:38.remember her life. And running for a reason - the charities and

:00:38. > :00:47.

:00:47. > :00:50.A multi-million pound investment is planned for a Jersey care facility

:00:50. > :00:52.for those with mental illness. Clinque Pinel, which is part of St

:00:52. > :00:55.Saviour's Hospital, hasn't been updated in over 40 years. Although

:00:55. > :00:58.over a million pounds has already been agreed for work there, the

:00:58. > :01:01.Treasury Minister and Health Minister agree an extra 2 million

:01:01. > :01:09.is needed to bring wards up to modern standards. Beckie Williams

:01:09. > :01:15.It's a vital centre which treats patients with dementia and mental

:01:15. > :01:23.illness locally. But Clinque Pinel was built in the 1970s and it needs

:01:23. > :01:30.an upgrade. All the staff work in a difficult environment, as well as

:01:30. > :01:35.the patients. These days be the one single rooms so it is easier to

:01:35. > :01:39.assess patients. It is also more privacy. This is one of the rooms

:01:39. > :01:42.used to treat patients here and as you can see it's seen better days.

:01:42. > :01:46.There are holes in the walls and the wallpaper's peeling, which

:01:46. > :01:49.nurses say could spread infection. And 17 patients have to share this

:01:49. > :01:53.bathroom. It's the only wash facility available for men and

:01:53. > :01:56.women. To bring these wards up to modern standards, 1 million has

:01:56. > :02:00.already been agreed by the government but it says more is

:02:00. > :02:04.needed. An extra two million is now being proposed to update facilities

:02:04. > :02:14.- money which will be added to spending plans to be debated by the

:02:14. > :02:16.States next month. I do nothing there are dangers but I think it is

:02:17. > :02:22.not acceptable that Clinque Pinel has been allowed to deteriorate to

:02:22. > :02:26.this level. We need to make changes to the facilities and upgrade them.

:02:26. > :02:31.That is why I have made the decision of amending a business

:02:31. > :02:37.plan which had been completed. has money not been put in before

:02:37. > :02:42.now? Questions need to be asked of the previous ministers for health

:02:43. > :02:45.and social services as to why many requests were not made. With longer

:02:45. > :02:48.term plans to relocate this hospital, the proposed cash

:02:48. > :02:58.injection is a short term cure, but it's a cure that will provide a

:02:58. > :03:01.It's still unclear this evening how a young Latvian woman died in

:03:01. > :03:04.Guernsey. It's been just over a week since 24-year-old Liga Verse's

:03:04. > :03:07.body was found in a flat in St Peter Port in suspicious

:03:07. > :03:09.circumstances. Her family have been to the island and a special service

:03:09. > :03:19.was held over the weekend to remember her, as Mike Wilkins

:03:19. > :03:24.

:03:24. > :03:29.The sadness was felt by everyone as they came together to remember a

:03:29. > :03:32.young woman's life. Liga's family just missed the service as they had

:03:32. > :03:41.to fly back to Latvia but her father is still stunned by what's

:03:41. > :03:46.happened. Very sad. They still did not understand what happened. But

:03:46. > :03:50.the father said that when I will be at home I will cry my eyes and

:03:50. > :03:54.heart out. The service was to remember Liga but was also to help

:03:54. > :03:57.her family. More than 1000 was raised to help pay for a cremation

:03:57. > :03:59.and the return of her ashes to Latvia. And for Guernsey's Latvian

:03:59. > :04:06.community the service was an important part of coming to terms

:04:06. > :04:12.with their loss. I think they did need it. There were many people

:04:12. > :04:19.here tonight and many of them were visibly moved. I hope that will

:04:19. > :04:24.give them something to hold on to, something to give them comfort and

:04:24. > :04:28.hope for the future. During this uncertain time the people of

:04:28. > :04:32.Guernsey were keen to show their support for the Latvian community.

:04:32. > :04:37.I do not think this evening is about speculating on what may have

:04:37. > :04:42.happened, I think it is about reassuring of the community. We

:04:42. > :04:45.feel their pain, we understand what they are going through. The police

:04:45. > :04:48.still can't say how Liga died as they're awaiting the results of a

:04:48. > :04:58.second post mortem. But as the technical side of the investigation

:04:58. > :05:01.

:05:01. > :05:06.continues, the human impact is Police are investigating a theft

:05:06. > :05:09.and attempted break-in in stark last week. Money was taken from the

:05:10. > :05:13.information office last Friday and that the island all there was an

:05:13. > :05:17.attempt to gain access. Guernsey police want to hear from anyone who

:05:17. > :05:20.was in those areas on the Friday evening, or Saturday morning. The

:05:20. > :05:23.Red Arrows will appear in Jersey and Guernsey next week during the

:05:23. > :05:26.International Air Displays if their training sessions run smoothly in

:05:26. > :05:29.the run up. Their appearance was in doubt after one of the pilots died

:05:30. > :05:32.in a plane crash earlier this month. But organisers say the team will

:05:33. > :05:42.fly here, encouraged by the widow of Flight Lieutenant Jon Egging who

:05:42. > :05:45.wants them to continue their A fort in Alderney has been

:05:45. > :05:48.described as one of the most important buildings of Roman

:05:48. > :05:51.Britain. A four year archaeological dig at the Nunnery has revealed the

:05:51. > :05:57.remains of a former Roman Sea Fort. The Director of Heritage Services

:05:57. > :06:00.at Guernsey Museums Dr Jason Monaghan says it's significant.

:06:00. > :06:06.is one of the most important Asian buildings in the Channel Islands

:06:06. > :06:13.and in the hall of Roman Britain -- ancient buildings. We do not have a

:06:13. > :06:18.fort of this type standing anywhere. This is an extremely important

:06:18. > :06:26.building for Roman Britain and certainly for Alderney. The sport

:06:26. > :06:29.A round up of some sports news for you now and Channel Islands' tennis

:06:29. > :06:33.star Heather Watson lost in three sets to the former champion Maria

:06:33. > :06:36.Sharapova in the 1st round of the US Open in New York. After winning

:06:36. > :06:39.the first set the Guernsey teenager fought hard but eventually went

:06:39. > :06:43.down 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. Watson got a standing ovation from the crowd in

:06:43. > :06:46.the Arthur Ashe stadium and said she loved the atmosphere. And in

:06:46. > :06:49.rugby, Jersey lost 29-27 away at Fylde on the opening day of the

:06:49. > :06:52.National League One season. The islanders were trailing 24-8 at the

:06:52. > :06:55.interval but fought back in the second-half and could have won if a

:06:55. > :07:05.penalty by Michael Le Bourgeois had been successful with three minutes

:07:05. > :07:07.

:07:07. > :07:10.left. Jersey get two bonus points Guernsey FC are top of the table in

:07:10. > :07:13.the Combined Counties League Division One after two away wins at

:07:13. > :07:16.the weekend. They beat Frimley Green 5-0 on Saturday and followed

:07:16. > :07:19.up that success with a 4-0 win over Cobham yesterday. It sees them

:07:19. > :07:27.level with Bedfont Sports on 16 points but topping the table on

:07:27. > :07:30.goal difference with 18 to Nearly 500 runners took part in

:07:30. > :07:33.this year's Guernsey marathon at the weekend. The event was raising

:07:33. > :07:43.money for a premature baby charity among others. Emma Thomas was

:07:43. > :07:54.

:07:54. > :07:58.This year the marathon got off to a flying start. I'm running for the

:07:58. > :08:00.Alzheimers Society becuase it runs in my family. I'm running for

:08:00. > :08:04.Canine Partners which is a fantastic charity which trains dogs

:08:04. > :08:06.to help people. I'm running for a charity that does research on rare

:08:06. > :08:09.ovarian cancer. This year's Guernsey marathon got off to a

:08:09. > :08:12.flying start - runners jostling for position. 1,000 prize money up for

:08:12. > :08:15.grabs plus the chance to support a favourite charity. Organisers told

:08:15. > :08:18.me nearly 500 people took part in the event. This years' chosen

:08:18. > :08:23.charity is the Priaulx Premature Baby Foundation. It's hoped some of

:08:23. > :08:26.the money raised will pay for new neo-natal hospital equipment.

:08:26. > :08:29.like to think round about seven to 8000 and it will go to the

:08:29. > :08:31.premature baby foundation, having said that I know that there are

:08:31. > :08:34.other runners out there who've raised hundreds, if not thousands

:08:34. > :08:37.of pounds for other charities. So I anticipate all together for all

:08:37. > :08:40.charities we'd probably raise about 40,000. At the halfway point the

:08:40. > :08:48.strain was starting to show. Runners cheered on by crowds on the

:08:48. > :08:52.Coast Road. First to the finish line in 2 hours 30 minutes and 47

:08:52. > :09:00.seconds was Neals Strik from the Netherlands. A seasoned runner -

:09:01. > :09:06.this was a practice for his next marathon in Holland. It was nice,

:09:06. > :09:11.my second amrathon win, so I did twelve marathons in total. It's

:09:11. > :09:14.never easy to win a marathon, so nice! As the stands made some noise

:09:14. > :09:19.the other runners came through - all glad to have made it the 26.2

:09:19. > :09:29.miles home. Good support. A good race. I am tired, just waiting for

:09:29. > :09:34.

:09:34. > :09:38.the others to come through. Pretty good, pretty knackered but proud.

:09:38. > :09:41.At the end of the race there were some exhausted looking faces - in

:09:41. > :09:46.unusual places as people couldn't wait to take their shoes off and

:09:46. > :09:56.piut their feet up. Coldest August night on record apparently last

:09:56. > :09:56.

:09:56. > :10:00.Mainly a dry story but the possibility of a few showers coming

:10:00. > :10:05.through the Bay of Biscay through Jersey towards the evening tomorrow.

:10:05. > :10:09.That stays with us as we move into thirsted. Generally dry though, a

:10:09. > :10:14.good reason for that, this area of high pressure weakens over the next

:10:14. > :10:17.24 hours. It will move northwards, allowing this area of low pressure

:10:17. > :10:27.to move gradually up towards us which will bring our small cloud

:10:27. > :10:36.and the threat of showers towards the end of the day. This evening

:10:36. > :10:39.and tonight a lot of fine weather. More cloud coming in overnight.

:10:39. > :10:44.Easterly winds which will be like but freshen up through the day

:10:44. > :10:54.tomorrow, when we will have a fine day mostly. A lot of cloud but by

:10:54. > :10:59.

:10:59. > :11:09.the end of the afternoon showers That is the coastal waters forecast.

:11:09. > :11:29.
