:00:05. > :00:09.Good evening. Tonight on BBC Channel Islands, a victory for

:00:09. > :00:15.teachers but a headache for schools - an urgent appeal for public help

:00:15. > :00:20.to supervise children. Plus, we'll see our young sports

:00:20. > :00:24.stars on medal-winning form watched by an Olympic legend.

:00:24. > :00:34.My name is Keith Pike. If you want to find out why I'm dressed like

:00:34. > :00:40.

:00:40. > :00:42.this, you'll find out later in the From the New Year, teachers in

:00:42. > :00:46.Jersey won't have to supervise lunch breaks in primary and

:00:46. > :00:50.secondary schools. The agreement was reached after a teachers'

:00:50. > :00:53.strike last year, but it does leave schools with a problem. Who will

:00:53. > :00:56.look after children during the school lunch hour? The Education

:00:56. > :01:04.Department is hoping members of the public will step in, as Anisha Shah

:01:04. > :01:07.reports. The lunch call, a sound of joy for

:01:07. > :01:17.children, but for many teachers it means more work and certainly no

:01:17. > :01:20.

:01:20. > :01:25.time to take a break. You must have a break. Unless it is only -- the

:01:25. > :01:28.only part of the school live you were doing. But if you are working

:01:28. > :01:36.in school as well, yes, you should have half an hour at least and

:01:36. > :01:46.chill out. To make that possible, from January every school in Jersey

:01:46. > :01:46.

:01:46. > :01:53.will have a dedicated team of lost and supervisors. -- lunchtime.

:01:53. > :01:59.hope some of the staff will opt in to doing lunchtime duties. I will

:01:59. > :02:05.invite them, those who wish to do some cover at lunchtime, to do so,

:02:06. > :02:12.which the agreement allows for. that's an option unions are

:02:12. > :02:18.advising against. I know some teachers are being offered extra

:02:18. > :02:23.payment to do these duties. The union feels they are welcome to do

:02:23. > :02:26.that if they want to do it. By the New Year, around 40 new lunchtime

:02:26. > :02:36.staff need to be recruited to give teachers the chance to take their

:02:36. > :02:40.

:02:40. > :02:45.break. We are expecting internal staff to come forward. We're

:02:45. > :02:49.changing the terms and conditions of teachers to currently trap --

:02:49. > :02:55.career at lunchtime supervision. This brings them in line with UK

:02:55. > :03:04.terms and conditions for teachers. Being given the choice looks set to

:03:04. > :03:07.be given top marks with teachers. A man who received head injuries in

:03:07. > :03:09.an alleged assault in Jersey at the weekend, is unconscious but stable

:03:09. > :03:13.in Southampton Hospital. He and another man were trying to flag

:03:13. > :03:16.down a taxi at the junction of Plat Douet Road and St Clements Inner

:03:16. > :03:20.Road early on Sunday morning, when the police say they were assaulted

:03:20. > :03:22.by three other young men. They want to speak to anyone who was in the

:03:22. > :03:26.area at the time. Guernsey's telephone museum closed

:03:26. > :03:29.its doors for the final time yesterday. This was the scene as

:03:29. > :03:31.islanders and holidaymakers called in for the last time. The facility

:03:31. > :03:35.had suffered from low visitor numbers, and saw taxpayers

:03:35. > :03:38.subsidising the museum at a cost of around 10 per visitor. The States

:03:38. > :03:42.of Guernsey will be keeping hold of the collection from Hermes House, a

:03:42. > :03:45.former telephone exchange in the Castel.

:03:45. > :03:48.Guernsey may be used to cruise ships, but this is the scene many

:03:48. > :03:52.woke up to yesterday morning. The Queen Elizabeth cruise liner was in

:03:52. > :03:56.the island. The vessel is one of the largest to visit this season,

:03:56. > :03:58.and can hold more than 2,000 passengers.

:03:58. > :04:03.Athletes from Jersey and Guernsey have been competing in the

:04:03. > :04:06.Commonwealth Youth Games in the Isle of Man this weekend. They were

:04:06. > :04:11.among competitors from over 60 nations on the island to compete in

:04:11. > :04:14.seven different sports. And while Jersey managed to bag a place on

:04:14. > :04:18.the medals board, Guernsey was just pleased with a number of personal

:04:18. > :04:21.bests and finalists. Amy Harris reports.

:04:21. > :04:28.It's the smallest nation ever to host the Commonwealth Youth Games,

:04:28. > :04:38.but the Isle of Man pulled out all the stops. Athletes from Guernsey

:04:38. > :04:41.

:04:41. > :04:49.and Jersey were among teams from 60 countries. From Jersey, we have a

:04:49. > :04:56.team from a country whose athletic prowess is legendary. On hand for

:04:56. > :05:00.inspiration was Dame Kelly Holmes. When I was 16 years old, I went to

:05:00. > :05:06.a games called the Mini Youth Olympics. I remember marching

:05:06. > :05:10.around in the opening ceremony. I have one of the 800 metres gold. I

:05:10. > :05:20.remember standing on the rostrum thinking, one day this will be real

:05:20. > :05:23.

:05:23. > :05:30.when I am Olga. -- older. Jersey athletes got personal bests, one in

:05:30. > :05:35.the shot putt. There have been a lot of good throwers coming out of

:05:35. > :05:38.Jersey in recent years. And on Team Guernsey, while there were no

:05:38. > :05:41.medals won, the athletes shone against some of the world's rising

:05:41. > :05:44.stars in swimming, cycling, athletics and badminton. Island

:05:44. > :05:47.records were broken, and many finished in the top 10 in their

:05:47. > :05:57.events - like 18-year-old Josh Lewis here in the 200 metre

:05:57. > :05:59.

:05:59. > :06:06.breaststroke final. Overall, if not all of our team, has managed to

:06:06. > :06:10.gain a top 20 place. More than half managed top 10. That is an amazing

:06:10. > :06:13.achievement for such a small island. Tonight it's the closing ceremony,

:06:14. > :06:17.a chance for all our athletes to celebrate what has been a very

:06:17. > :06:20.successful commonwealth games. You're watching the BBC in the

:06:20. > :06:30.Channel Islands. Later in Spotlight with Simon and Victoria, how a

:06:30. > :06:32.

:06:32. > :06:35.sinking ship could revive one Jersey's Multiple Sclerosis Therapy

:06:35. > :06:38.Centre is getting a makeover as part of this year's Construction

:06:38. > :06:44.Week. The Construction Council is helping refurbish the building in

:06:44. > :06:52.just five days. New carpets, lights, kitchen and a fresh lick of paint

:06:52. > :06:57.are all helping make the centre more welcoming.

:06:57. > :07:04.It is a case of establishing who we are, putting ourselves back on the

:07:04. > :07:08.map. We would like to see more people with multiple sclerosis

:07:09. > :07:14.coming to visit us. Talk about things relating to multiple

:07:14. > :07:18.sclerosis, and that includes family members as well. Next to a step

:07:18. > :07:21.back in the time for the boys in blue. One history enthusiast in

:07:21. > :07:24.Guernsey has been so taken up with the history of Guernsey police,

:07:24. > :07:27.he's had a replica of the 19th Century uniform made for him. Keith

:07:27. > :07:30.Pike has also spent five years transcribing word for word decades

:07:30. > :07:33.of log books. Edward Sault went to meet him.

:07:33. > :07:36.No, your eyes aren't deceiving you. This is a replica of a uniform that

:07:36. > :07:46.would have been seen around St Peter Port - the uniform of an

:07:46. > :07:50.

:07:50. > :07:59.assistant constable from the late 1880s and early 1900s. Those are

:08:00. > :08:07.original and cops. -- handcuffs. I think in material would have been

:08:07. > :08:12.thicker. What we will get there in the end. Do you almost feel like a

:08:12. > :08:18.different person when you put it on? Yes and No. I like to have a

:08:18. > :08:27.joke with people. Keith has transcribed island's police

:08:27. > :08:36.occurrence reports from 1850 to 1920. Has this shock you? He has in

:08:36. > :08:39.some cases. I am seeing the island from a different angle. N this

:08:39. > :08:42.picture, officers of the day. And here, a form of punishment for

:08:42. > :08:47.those found guilty of some crimes. They were made to walk a treadmill,

:08:47. > :08:52.and if one person stopped, everyone else would fall off. One woman

:08:52. > :09:00.found out that her great grandfather received the perch. --

:09:00. > :09:05.Berdych. It was an absolute shock. There is no finish to this. It will

:09:05. > :09:08.go on and on. Keith hopes to one day write a book with everything

:09:08. > :09:12.he's found. His choice of costume has certainly caught the eye, but

:09:12. > :09:15.he hopes that these memories will live on and not locked up.

:09:15. > :09:19.And you can hear more from Keith on BBC Guernsey tomorrow morning.

:09:19. > :09:22.He'll be telling Kevin Stewart about the horse and cart used as a

:09:22. > :09:32.getaway car, and talking more about the books you saw in Edward's

:09:32. > :09:32.

:09:32. > :09:37.report. That's from 9.30. We have escaped the worst of the

:09:37. > :09:41.We have escaped the worst of the winds today. What about tomorrow?

:09:41. > :09:49.After a very blustery day today, the weather is coming down during

:09:49. > :09:56.the week ahead. Still a little Rhys. Throughout the day tomorrow we will

:09:57. > :10:02.see some showers. Some sunshine. On Wednesday we will see a bridge of

:10:02. > :10:10.high pressure from the West. The weather does settle down. For

:10:10. > :10:20.tonight, generally cloudy. Showers being blown in on a fairly brisk

:10:20. > :10:22.

:10:22. > :10:28.breeze. A mild night. Showers and from first thing tomorrow morning.

:10:28. > :10:38.-- around. Bright and sunny throughout the day. Good amounts of

:10:38. > :10:48.sunshine to be found later tomorrow. A moderate breeze. The coastal

:10:48. > :11:08.

:11:08. > :11:14.Still pretty choppy sir. -- surfing. For the rest of the week, after

:11:14. > :11:23.tomorrow's showers, it is looking try on Wednesday and Thursday. --
