:00:11. > :00:15.Good evening. Welcome to the BBC in the Channel Islands. The headlines:

:00:15. > :00:21.50 civil servants are set to lose their jobs as Guernsey's government

:00:21. > :00:24.tries to balance the books. Taking bets as suspended poker site

:00:24. > :00:34.Full Tilt Poker test the resolve of Alderney's Gambling Commission.

:00:34. > :00:42.

:00:42. > :00:49.And I have found a new hide, find 50 civil servants in Guernsey could

:00:49. > :00:52.lose their jobs as the States tried so to save 1.7 million a year. PTC

:00:52. > :00:57.Treasury and Resources wants to centralise services through States

:00:57. > :01:01.departments as part of the savings programme.

:01:01. > :01:05.It was not good news for workers here who were told they could lose

:01:05. > :01:09.their jobs. Treasury and resources want to get rid of 50

:01:09. > :01:14.administration jobs across different departments. It is a

:01:14. > :01:17.money-saving measure designed to save 1.7 million a year.

:01:17. > :01:26.Effectively at in a moment -- effectively at the moment, every

:01:26. > :01:31.department has accounts departments. That in itself is a duplication of

:01:31. > :01:35.effort because we have different systems running that and so on.

:01:35. > :01:39.government estimates it will cost 7.9 million to get rid of the

:01:39. > :01:43.posts which includes redundancy payouts. I asked the minister

:01:43. > :01:47.responsible whether it was value- for-money or a false economy.

:01:47. > :01:52.certainly not a false economy. It will have a five-year payback. If

:01:52. > :01:55.the amount we are going to spend will produce 1.7 million a year of

:01:55. > :01:59.savings and this is the sort of the reform that people have been

:01:59. > :02:04.looking for for a long time. They say that it will cut down on

:02:04. > :02:07.government waste and where possible, the cuts will be realised through

:02:07. > :02:11.natural turnover and redeployment of staff. That will be of little

:02:11. > :02:18.comfort to the workers who could you look -- who could lose their

:02:18. > :02:23.jobs. Politicians will decide on their fate in October.

:02:23. > :02:28.Three teenagers have been arrested following an assault in Jersey. The

:02:28. > :02:31.attack took place near the junction of St Clement Inner Road and Plat

:02:31. > :02:37.Douet in the early hours of Sunday morning. A 22-year-old victim is

:02:37. > :02:40.unconscious but in a stable condition at Southampton Hospital.

:02:40. > :02:43.Postal collections and deliveries in Guernsey may be reduced to five

:02:43. > :02:47.days a week. The cost-saving measure is being proposed by

:02:47. > :02:51.Commerce and Employment and will be debated by the States next month.

:02:51. > :02:54.Guernsey Post is under financial pressure as its income continues to

:02:54. > :02:59.fall. The Croat side in the Charing Cross

:02:59. > :03:04.area of St Helier is getting a 50 million renovation. Some of the

:03:04. > :03:10.buildings date back to 1919 and will include refurbishment, a new

:03:10. > :03:13.retell units and offices. The picture of His Majesty's Voice will

:03:13. > :03:17.also be brought back to its original state. A we are very

:03:17. > :03:23.anxious that we should continue to invest in this area. The whole

:03:23. > :03:30.development is going to cost 15 million. It is a date waste to St

:03:30. > :03:33.Helier. It is one of the pivotal date ways -- gateways. The

:03:33. > :03:39.Architecture will sit very comfortably in of its surroundings

:03:39. > :03:43.and it will give a massive trading boost to the area.

:03:43. > :03:47.A hearing to decide whether to revoke the licence of one of the

:03:47. > :03:51.world's largest online gambling sites will go ahead on Monday. Full

:03:51. > :03:59.Tilt Poker which is registered in Alderney had wanted to postpone the

:03:59. > :04:02.hearing but today the bid fails. At stake on millions of pounds of

:04:03. > :04:07.customers' accounts and the island's gambolling reputation.

:04:07. > :04:13.It dubs itself the world's best online Popat software. This is Full

:04:13. > :04:17.Tilt Poker, an online gambling side registered in Alderney. But it was

:04:17. > :04:21.suspended in June by the Alderney's Gambling Commission after it and

:04:21. > :04:28.others came under a US investigation for money laundering,

:04:28. > :04:32.illegal gambling and bank fraud. We have been investigating. These are

:04:32. > :04:36.serious allegations that the American authorities are making and

:04:36. > :04:40.they go right to the heart of the credibility of not only Full Tilt

:04:40. > :04:45.Poker but all of the companies. hearing to decide whether to

:04:45. > :04:50.restore or revoke Full Tilt Poker's licence permanently is due to take

:04:50. > :04:54.place in London on Monday. To date Alderney's courts decided the

:04:54. > :04:57.hearing will go ahead. At stake is not only Full Tilt Poker's licence

:04:57. > :05:00.but also the credibility of Alderney's Gambling Commission.

:05:00. > :05:04.Gambling companies will be looking at the decision and looking at the

:05:04. > :05:08.reasons for it and studying it quite closely by debate -- when

:05:08. > :05:14.they decide where to locate their business. Other jurisdictions, the

:05:14. > :05:19.Isle of Man, Gibraltar, even places like malt there will be looking at

:05:19. > :05:26.Alderney and finding out how they have dealt with this case and also

:05:26. > :05:30.perhaps seeing if there is any way they could pick up a businesses

:05:30. > :05:33.that may move from Alderney or choose not to be located in

:05:33. > :05:38.Alderney in the future. Also watching will be thousands of poker

:05:38. > :05:42.players around the world who have millions of pounds stuck in Full

:05:42. > :05:50.Tilt Poker accounts. They will be hoping Alderney ensures that they

:05:50. > :05:57.can get access to their money. You are watching the BBC in the

:05:57. > :06:03.Channel Islands. Later, while one man is counting himself lucky after

:06:03. > :06:08.finding a rare death's head hawk moth.

:06:08. > :06:12.Intriguing. Now it is Friday which means one thing, Free Friday. The

:06:12. > :06:16.time of the week when we showcase something on the islands that is

:06:16. > :06:20.free or costs very little. This week is one of the best times to go

:06:20. > :06:30.bird-watching. With a new hide in St Ouen, it is making it even more

:06:30. > :06:41.

:06:42. > :06:45.# Born Free. Let's face it, we all want to go

:06:45. > :06:49.something a bit warmer as the summer comes to an end. You might

:06:49. > :06:55.not be able to leave the islands this weekend, but you can come to

:06:55. > :07:00.St Ouen where there is a new hide poor but watch -- bird-watching.

:07:00. > :07:05.Migrant birds coming to the Channel Islands this year. We can come and

:07:05. > :07:15.watch them come from the warmer climes. This is the best time of

:07:15. > :07:23.

:07:23. > :07:29.year to be bird-watching in Jersey. We can see about 200 feral beasts,

:07:29. > :07:37.mainly greylag geese. They have escaped from private collections.

:07:37. > :07:45.More interestingly, we have got four or five Greenspan Pipers.

:07:45. > :07:50.Other small wading birds, 15 grey herons and about half-an-hour ago,

:07:50. > :07:54.a white egret flew over. I have never seen one of those in Jersey

:07:55. > :07:59.before. Many people might wonder what is so entertaining about bird-

:07:59. > :08:02.watching. How would you sell it to them? It gets you out into the

:08:02. > :08:07.countryside. On a beautiful day like today, where else would you

:08:07. > :08:17.like to be? Lovely and peaceful, no telephones ringing, it is just

:08:17. > :08:22.

:08:22. > :08:26.If you do fancy giving it a go, the new hide is in St Ouen. For more

:08:26. > :08:30.information, get in latch and -- get in touch with the Jersey

:08:30. > :08:36.National Trust. Can you guess with -- can you guess

:08:36. > :08:40.what this is? Any idea? It is a dragon's head of cause and it forms

:08:40. > :08:44.part of this year's Dragon Boat Festival in Jersey. Teams of people

:08:44. > :08:48.in dragon boats will be racing up and down the Albert Pier Harbour to

:08:48. > :08:51.raise money for Jersey Hospice Care. The event has been going for 14

:08:51. > :08:55.years and this number a record number of teams have entered but

:08:55. > :09:00.there is still room for more. would encourage everyone to come

:09:00. > :09:04.down and watch. There will probably be some places on some of the teams

:09:04. > :09:10.so it come down and ask if you want to have a go. There will be food

:09:10. > :09:16.and drink and activities for children, craft stalls, bungee-

:09:16. > :09:21.jumping, loads of going on. Praying for but where there? Everything is

:09:21. > :09:27.crossed for good weather. If it is like today, I will be happy.

:09:27. > :09:30.Whatever the weather does, it will go ahead, rain, shine, winds, we

:09:30. > :09:34.will still be here. Raising money for a great cause.

:09:34. > :09:43.I think she might need to cross her fingers because I do not think it

:09:43. > :09:48.Quite unsettled weather coming our way this weekend. Showers on both

:09:48. > :09:53.Saturday and Sunday. Hopefully, fingers crossed, a bit of sunshine

:09:53. > :09:56.in between the showers. At the moment, an area of low pressure is

:09:56. > :10:00.stretching from Iceland down towards Scotland. The weather front

:10:00. > :10:04.coming in overnight will bring us some more persistent rain overnight.

:10:04. > :10:07.It should be gone by lunchtime tomorrow. Very quickly some more

:10:07. > :10:15.showers will come in. Sharif throughout the day and blustery

:10:15. > :10:21.winds. -- Sharif. Still Wendy on Sunday and still the risk of

:10:21. > :10:26.frequent showers. There may even be heavy showers with the odd rumble
