:00:05. > :00:08.Hello, welcome to BBC Channel Islands. Here in the Channel
:00:08. > :00:12.Islands: Cleared for take-off - controversial plans for Guernsey's
:00:12. > :00:18.runway are given the green light. The final push - with hours to go
:00:18. > :00:21.until polls open, candidates attempt to impress. And happy
:00:21. > :00:31.birthday, Bergerac - we look back at 30 years of the drama that put
:00:31. > :00:37.
:00:37. > :00:40.Good evening. It's been controversial from the very
:00:41. > :00:44.beginning but now plans to upgrade the runway at Guernsey airport have
:00:44. > :00:49.been given the go-ahead. The proposals were approved today,
:00:49. > :00:52.meaning work can start next year. Penny Elderfield reports.
:00:52. > :00:57.Planes have been taking off here for decades, but the authorities
:00:57. > :01:01.say if that's to continue, major work is needed on the runway. And
:01:01. > :01:04.it doesn't come cheap. These plans have just been approved, and at a
:01:04. > :01:09.cost of 80 million it's the biggest project ever to be
:01:09. > :01:13.undertaken by the States. delighted, albeit there are
:01:13. > :01:21.conditions attached to the application. That is what we have
:01:21. > :01:25.to do now, work with the contractors and the conditions.
:01:25. > :01:29.Work with the environment to process conditions and it is what
:01:29. > :01:32.we will be doing from tomorrow, it will take time, but we will get
:01:32. > :01:35.through it. The decision followed months of consultation, where
:01:35. > :01:37.critics had the chance to voice concerns. But concerns the
:01:37. > :01:45.proposals go against the Island's planning laws remain, meaning this
:01:45. > :01:52.isn't the end of the story. only next stage would be to call
:01:52. > :01:55.for a judicial review on whether not that the board of the
:01:55. > :01:59.Environment Department was entitled to approve the scheme. In other
:01:59. > :02:03.words, or whether the applied with the legislation.
:02:03. > :02:06.Work at the airport could now start as soon as next year, but as the
:02:06. > :02:12.threat of a legal challenge remains, we still don't know for sure
:02:12. > :02:15.whether it will. Armed Guernsey police officers are
:02:15. > :02:20.attending an incident at a housing estate in Castel. Police were
:02:20. > :02:24.called to the scene at Les Genats this afternoon. Access to the
:02:24. > :02:28.estate is currently blocked. We'll bring you more details in the news
:02:28. > :02:32.at 10:25pm. Channel Television is being sold to
:02:32. > :02:36.ITV plc for an undisclosed sum. The station was one of a handful still
:02:36. > :02:40.outside the ITV network. It's been owned by the Yattendon Group since
:02:40. > :02:49.2001 and next year will celebrate 50 years of broadcasting. But
:02:49. > :02:54.management say the change won't affect output. You will not see any
:02:54. > :02:58.difference at all, it is business as usual. We're proud that we run a
:02:58. > :03:02.strong regional service here and ITV have indicated they support
:03:02. > :03:09.that regional service and do not see any significant changes taking
:03:09. > :03:12.place. We see it as a positive move. Her Now, there's just hours to go
:03:12. > :03:15.until Jersey goes to the polls for its elections. With the countdown
:03:15. > :03:18.well and truly on, the last Senatorial hustings was held last
:03:18. > :03:20.night in St Helier and hundreds turned out to grill the 13
:03:20. > :03:30.candidates going for the four available seats. Amy Harris was
:03:30. > :03:33.
:03:33. > :03:40.A sea of faces and standing room only. They even listened from
:03:40. > :03:42.outside the door as question time came to town. It was the last stop
:03:42. > :03:52.on the Senatorial campaign trail and the last opportunity for voters
:03:52. > :03:53.
:03:53. > :03:58.to hear from the 13 candidates going for four seats. I'm keen to
:03:59. > :04:06.hear about immigration. Immigration. We must stop wasting money, it's
:04:06. > :04:15.got to be done. We don't want extra taxation. Issues covered ranged
:04:15. > :04:25.from housing to car parking to education. What do you think about
:04:25. > :04:30.three schools? I think they will not be very appropriate for infants.
:04:30. > :04:39.I do not know enough about the three school concept to give you an
:04:39. > :04:43.educated dancer but I have to be persuaded. Schooling has already
:04:43. > :04:51.complicated enough and free schools have caused a lot of discord and
:04:51. > :04:55.our communities. So did parishioners like what they heard?
:04:55. > :04:59.There's a broad cross-section of opinion. There are some who are
:04:59. > :05:06.clearly not going to go very far and it will be a dreadful choice
:05:06. > :05:11.with four rather than six. Tonight has changed my view on some of the
:05:11. > :05:14.candidates. I found it extremely interesting and it will be hard to
:05:14. > :05:21.choose between candidates. But what do the candidates hope they got
:05:21. > :05:26.across? I hope people will remember I have already got things done that
:05:26. > :05:30.people have been asking for for many years. I bring commonsense and
:05:30. > :05:36.balanced judgment to all the decisions I make. I try to take as
:05:36. > :05:40.many people with meet in taking good can -- decisions on behalf of
:05:40. > :05:46.the community. I think there should be a referendum on the change of
:05:46. > :05:50.the constitution. I think the Constables should look after parish
:05:50. > :05:55.matters and there should be detailed legislation if they do not
:05:55. > :06:00.agree with that. I am in favour of constitutional reform. The current
:06:00. > :06:06.system is just not working. We have to change from the three different
:06:06. > :06:12.members, and go for just one type of member and everyone after that
:06:12. > :06:16.should fall into place in a better system. Of all the candidates, I'm
:06:16. > :06:21.the one with a platform to build a fairer and greener future for us
:06:21. > :06:25.and our children. They should take away that I am intelligent, capable
:06:25. > :06:28.and represent them better than they have been before. So that's it, the
:06:28. > :06:32.big clear up after the last Senatorial Hustings here in St
:06:32. > :06:39.Helier. All the 13 candidates can do now is hope that they've done
:06:39. > :06:41.enough so that people will vote for them on election day.
:06:41. > :06:46.And here they all are, the 13 candidates wanting your vote
:06:46. > :06:49.tomorrow for the role of senator. There's more on the election and
:06:49. > :06:58.all of the candidates for Senator, Deputy and Constable on the BBC
:06:58. > :07:01.Jersey website. The star of the hit TV drama
:07:01. > :07:05.Bergerac says the Channel Islands should invest in becoming a
:07:05. > :07:10.location to shoot films. John Nettles was in the islands recently
:07:10. > :07:14.to celebrate three decades of the BBC drama, set in Jersey. Meanwhile,
:07:14. > :07:24.those that starred on the show have been sharing their memories of what
:07:24. > :07:34.
:07:34. > :07:37.This is an iconic landmark from the opening titles of the programme,
:07:37. > :07:40.but it almost started as something entirely different. The creator
:07:40. > :07:43.Robert Banks Stewart had wanted to film a comedy set in the Channel
:07:43. > :07:52.Islands, before the days of 'Allo 'Allo but TV bosses weren't having
:07:52. > :07:56.it. He said we cannot do it because it is insulting to people. The
:07:56. > :08:03.Channel Islands had been occupied. And with a love of Jersey at the
:08:03. > :08:12.back of his mind - Bergerac was born. What a great place to make a
:08:12. > :08:17.series. I had done a shoestring and got the BBC last, prizing me away
:08:17. > :08:22.from the back streets of London. I thought, if I do it well and it's a
:08:22. > :08:27.good drama, that's how it came to be Jersey. With the first episodes
:08:27. > :08:32.filmed, the wait for screening and what the public thought was tense.
:08:32. > :08:39.When it hit the screen on Sunday night, it got around 15 or 16
:08:39. > :08:43.million viewers. I went out and got very drunk. That was when it became
:08:43. > :08:46.a pleasure to do. And as members of the cast and crew got together to
:08:46. > :08:55.celebrate three decades of the hit BBC show, it's clear it's left
:08:55. > :08:59.lasting memories. I think what is fantastic about the programme is it
:08:59. > :09:06.keeps its viewers say. You know you're going to get beautiful
:09:06. > :09:10.scenery, the plot resolved and you know right will win over wrong.
:09:11. > :09:16.Very rarely in one's area have I read something and thought, wow,
:09:16. > :09:20.what a script. My character had all these disguises and some even
:09:20. > :09:28.people on the crew did not recognise me. It was such fun to
:09:28. > :09:36.come here every year. I think what they ought to do now is the should
:09:36. > :09:41.retire to Jersey. Bergerac himself thinks the Channel Islands has what
:09:41. > :09:47.it takes to shine on the screen. The islands should get themselves
:09:47. > :09:50.together to a Ford affirm -- Film Company's tax breaks or some kind
:09:50. > :09:54.of financial arrangement whereby they could save money to bring
:09:54. > :10:02.productions here. They would bring productions here and along with
:10:02. > :10:11.that a lot of money. Millions of pounds. But could the show come
:10:11. > :10:17.back? As an old man? I could come back as a cold case detective.
:10:17. > :10:27.tried to bring back a series where it would be revealed that Bergerac
:10:27. > :10:30.had a daughter. We somehow could not persuade at either ITV or BBC.
:10:30. > :10:34.Three decades on, it's apparent Bergerac still holds a place in the
:10:34. > :10:42.hearts of those who starred on it and those who live in the islands -
:10:42. > :10:45.but let's leave Jim to have the last word.
:10:45. > :10:53.That was a joy to put together and thanks to all the cast and crew who
:10:53. > :10:58.took the time to talk to me. Now, took the time to talk to me. Now,
:10:58. > :11:00.it's getting a bit colder. David has the forecast. The coal there
:11:00. > :11:06.has arrived across the Channel Islands and they will be more of
:11:06. > :11:10.that across the next two days. Quite a blustery evening tonight
:11:10. > :11:14.with showers probably continuing. For much of tomorrow, the risk of
:11:14. > :11:20.showers with some sunshine between those showers. On Thursday and
:11:20. > :11:24.Friday, high pressure moves in settling things down. There is a
:11:24. > :11:30.change in one direction and they will see temperatures rise again,
:11:30. > :11:36.perhaps as much as 15 Celsius. Over night tonight, up into single
:11:36. > :11:39.figures with some clear sky and temperatures as low as nine Celsius.
:11:39. > :11:44.Still that north-west breeze which will continue to give a showers and
:11:45. > :11:51.to the morning. Into the afternoon, showers will become more isolated
:11:51. > :11:58.with the chance of some sunshine in the afternoon. Feeling colder than
:11:58. > :12:04.that because of the brisk north- west wind. Here is our coastal
:12:04. > :12:14.waters forecast. Visibility is good falling to moderate in those
:12:14. > :12:17.
:12:18. > :12:26.showers. For a sufferers, both beaches will be choppy with the
:12:26. > :12:31.biggest waves likely to be around at three or four feet. Looks quite
:12:31. > :12:37.good for the weekend with temperatures looking a little bit
:12:37. > :12:42.higher and later winds on Thursday. By Friday, winds becomes south-
:12:42. > :12:49.westerly. Sunny spells and temperatures up to 15 Celsius. On
:12:49. > :12:55.Saturday, 16 Celsius is possible with warm air from the south. Here
:12:55. > :13:00.with warm air from the south. Here is the summary. With just hours
