:00:11. > :00:14.Good evening. Welcome to BBC Channel Islands. The headlines: A

:00:14. > :00:21.victory for disability campaigners could spell the end of dirty and

:00:21. > :00:24.undignified public toilets. They will be twice as big as the present

:00:24. > :00:30.ones and will have access and somewhere for people to be changed

:00:30. > :00:36.without being put on the floor. Later on the programme: Use it or

:00:36. > :00:40.lose it, would you miss Saturday deliveries from Guernsey Post?

:00:40. > :00:50.And getting back to nature, how children are learning to love their

:00:50. > :00:56.

:00:57. > :01:02.Campaigners have heralded steps to improve public toilets for disabled

:01:02. > :01:05.people as long overdue. A new law has been drafted to ensure all

:01:05. > :01:11.newly-built or extended public buildings will have facilities

:01:11. > :01:18.accessible for those in wheelchairs. Already St Helier's newest park has

:01:18. > :01:23.one such facility. Edward Trevor relies on his

:01:23. > :01:27.mobility scooter to get around Jersey. But he has to plan his

:01:27. > :01:37.journey down to the smallest detail because accessing toilet facilities

:01:37. > :01:42.can be a real barrier. practical. Not possible. It is the

:01:42. > :01:47.wrong angle. It would be impossible to use this if you could not walk

:01:47. > :01:51.and he needed to come in by scooter. I think the toilet is disabled

:01:51. > :01:55.rather than the person. Being forced to turn away is an issue

:01:55. > :02:00.many people with disabilities based in Jersey, but that could be about

:02:00. > :02:06.to change under proposals to ensure proper disabled toilets are built

:02:06. > :02:09.in all new public buildings and extensions. To use the toilet

:02:09. > :02:15.properly and without the embarrassment of being laid on the

:02:15. > :02:19.floor, because they will have a shelf on which they can go to have

:02:19. > :02:24.their clothing changed, so that will make a great improvement.

:02:24. > :02:29.new law has yet to be passed, but already there are signs of things

:02:29. > :02:33.to come. This is the sight of the first disabled toilets to be built

:02:33. > :02:38.in Jersey. It will have easier access and beat twice the size and

:02:38. > :02:46.there are plenty more to follow. Years ago with my own disabled son,

:02:46. > :02:51.who has made a good recovery tea, I'd discover it what they had to go

:02:51. > :02:55.through. This has been my dream of bought 20 years. The proposed law

:02:55. > :03:02.to introduce more facilities like this will be debated by the new

:03:02. > :03:06.States. For Edward that is one less obstacle to a smoother journey.

:03:06. > :03:16.More than 28,000 people turned out to vote in Jersey's elections this

:03:16. > :03:22.year, at nearly 4000 more than in 2008. It is 45.5%. It is below the

:03:22. > :03:25.61.9% who voted in the Isle of Man's general election and of the

:03:26. > :03:34.55% to voted in the 2008 Guernsey elections.

:03:34. > :03:40.There is a call to raise Jersey's minimum wage to 8.20. It is

:03:40. > :03:44.currently at 6.32 an hour, about 40% of the average salary. But

:03:44. > :03:48.deputy Geoff Southern believes it should be about 50% of the average

:03:48. > :03:56.salary. He says offering 8 an hour will encourage more people to work

:03:56. > :03:59.in farming and hospitality. Next, under pressure to cut costs,

:03:59. > :04:05.Guernsey Post is considering axing its Saturday deliveries. Tomorrow

:04:05. > :04:10.the States will vote to decide if the company should be allowed to do

:04:10. > :04:14.it. The company could go from six days to five at the start of the

:04:14. > :04:19.year. Receiving and sending you post on a

:04:20. > :04:24.Saturday could soon be a thing of the past. More of us are using e-

:04:24. > :04:30.mail and social networking websites and sending and receiving fewer

:04:30. > :04:32.letters. This means less money for Guernsey Post at a time when it is

:04:33. > :04:38.coping with an increasingly costly relationship with the Royal mail.

:04:38. > :04:44.It is arguing that something has got to give and claims that cutting

:04:44. > :04:48.the service from 65 days is the way to go. Whilst price might have been

:04:48. > :04:52.the mechanism to offset that reduction over recent years, we

:04:52. > :04:57.cannot do that anymore because that increases the level of decline. We

:04:57. > :05:03.have to take a look at service and we have consulted on this issue and

:05:03. > :05:06.we think this is a sensible step. Many postal workers depend on the

:05:06. > :05:11.overtime payments on Saturdays and some feel a reduction in service

:05:11. > :05:15.would be bad for them and the island. There is a lot of slack and

:05:15. > :05:20.as with all these things it is like the shop once it is gone, it has

:05:20. > :05:25.gone and you never get it back. There are a number of issues, but

:05:25. > :05:32.the issue everyone should concern themselves with is the public and

:05:32. > :05:37.the Six Day service which delivers right to Lands End will stop two

:05:37. > :05:42.years ago Guernsey pose saw a 15% drop in volume and this year there

:05:42. > :05:49.has been a 5% decline. Tomorrow the States will decide it axing

:05:49. > :05:53.Saturday deliveries is a price they feel the island is willing to pay.

:05:53. > :05:59.Harbour bosses are warning Guernsey boat owners about the dangers of

:05:59. > :06:05.recovering vessels during storms. It comes after yesterday's high

:06:05. > :06:08.winds blew two boats off the wall into Belgrade bay. The

:06:08. > :06:13.harbourmaster said conditions would have made it difficult and

:06:13. > :06:19.dangerous to recover them. Jersey's Harbour Master, Captain Howard Le

:06:19. > :06:25.Cornu, is stepping down. He joined Jersey harbours in 10,001 and was

:06:25. > :06:31.appointed CVO in 2005. He will lead at the end of March. Doug Bannister

:06:31. > :06:36.will take over in early November. A campaign to recruit more foster

:06:36. > :06:40.carers in Guernsey has got off to a good start. It was launched last

:06:40. > :06:45.week and since then there have been more than one dozen inquiries. The

:06:45. > :06:50.authorities say a whole range of families are coming forward. People

:06:50. > :06:55.from all sorts of backgrounds. We have got older couples and

:06:55. > :06:59.individuals, we have got younger people who have not had children

:06:59. > :07:05.and to our thinking, we never thought we could foster and having

:07:05. > :07:12.thought about it now they have come forward. A whole range, individuals,

:07:12. > :07:19.Couples, different backgrounds. Later: How scientists are learning

:07:19. > :07:23.secrets of the deep through some old teeth.

:07:23. > :07:27.The blustery weather this week has not stopped children in Jersey

:07:28. > :07:31.Bencher on a woodland walk. The National Trust is holding guided

:07:31. > :07:41.walks through the island's woods during half term with the aim of

:07:41. > :07:46.getting youngsters out and about. # Did you go down to the woods today,

:07:47. > :07:53.you are sure of a big surprise. If you go down to the woods today,

:07:53. > :07:58.you'd better go in disguise... Well, they did not find any teddy bears,

:07:59. > :08:02.but they learnt more about Jersey's woodland areas. They donned their

:08:02. > :08:09.wellies and their raincoats for the first of the National Trust

:08:09. > :08:15.woodland walks. It is nature's harvest time, so to speak. You get

:08:15. > :08:20.a nice time when wild life is easier to see. It hides away during

:08:20. > :08:28.the winter. It is nice to see different parts of our world like

:08:28. > :08:32.to see the leaves and the fruit in season. A millipede. Chestnuts,

:08:32. > :08:38.leaves and insects were pointed out along the way. What did they

:08:38. > :08:45.enjoyed the mayor's? Being out in the woods because you can find

:08:45. > :08:55.different animals. I was looking to find a millipede, but I could not

:08:55. > :08:55.

:08:55. > :09:00.find one. Trying to find bugs that are hibernating so this is the

:09:00. > :09:05.first one they have ever done. fund, educational awards are being

:09:05. > :09:13.held every day this week. The trust hopes to inspire young, naturalists

:09:13. > :09:17.of the future. In sports and Peter Vincenti is

:09:17. > :09:22.likely to play against Manchester United tonight. He played for

:09:22. > :09:25.Jersey a few years ago, but now plays for Aldershot and they face

:09:25. > :09:30.United in the 4th round of the Carling Cup. Tonight will be a

:09:30. > :09:34.dream come true as he is a Manchester United fan. They are

:09:34. > :09:39.hoping to win, but deep down I bet he is hoping for a draw Mac. He

:09:39. > :09:45.would love a draw and go back to Old Trafford and play his idols at

:09:45. > :09:50.the Theatre of dreams. It must be the favourite resort for Peter.

:09:50. > :09:56.Heather Watson has eased through to round two of the bars to pull open

:09:56. > :10:01.in Devon by defeating Amanda Elliott. She will face Laura Robson

:10:01. > :10:11.tomorrow. Join us tomorrow evening because we are hoping to speak to

:10:11. > :10:11.

:10:11. > :10:16.I think we have got more showers across the Channel Islands for the

:10:16. > :10:19.next 24 hours. It becomes a little drier towards the end of the week,

:10:19. > :10:26.but we have wet weather to get through first, particularly on

:10:26. > :10:31.Thursday. Overnight we have two areas of low pressure. This one is

:10:31. > :10:36.giving us the showers right now and there is a new one not far from the

:10:36. > :10:41.west coast of Spain and Portugal. It will arrive across the Channel

:10:41. > :10:46.Islands by lunchtime on Thursday. It is not that windy, but a lot of

:10:46. > :10:51.wet weather for much of the day. On Friday the ridge of high pressure

:10:51. > :10:54.comes into dry things out. There are some showers around this

:10:55. > :10:59.evening and overnight, probably becoming more isolated, but the

:10:59. > :11:03.risk of showers right the way through dawn. Temperatures down to

:11:03. > :11:08.10 degrees. Tomorrow morning we will have some showers and by the

:11:08. > :11:13.afternoon they will become a little more isolated. Come the end of the

:11:13. > :11:21.day, it clouds over from the south- west. Winds from the south by the

:11:21. > :11:31.end of the day and 15 degrees will be the maximum temperature. These

:11:31. > :11:35.

:11:35. > :11:45.are the coastal waters forecasts. The times of high water. For most

:11:45. > :11:46.

:11:46. > :11:50.of the beaches it is reasonably clean. The winds bring a fairly

:11:50. > :11:57.slow-moving weather front across as on Thursday, so we are going to see

:11:57. > :12:03.more persistent rain. By Friday that will move away and it is a
