:00:12. > :00:19.Good evening. Coming opera, the pregnant pause costing new mothers

:00:20. > :00:25.dearly. Calls to speed up maternity laws in Jersey. Guernsey's Air

:00:25. > :00:35.Squadron vows to keep ties with the island. And winding down, we need

:00:35. > :00:42.

:00:42. > :00:48.the man who has been Jersey's There are urgent calls to implement

:00:48. > :00:52.maternity leave laws in the Jersey. New parents currently have no legal

:00:52. > :01:02.entitlement to time off work. Jersey Child Care Trust is piling

:01:02. > :01:09.

:01:09. > :01:13.pressure on the state to change the Pressures mother and baby time. In

:01:13. > :01:19.Jersey it is a luxury not everybody can enjoy as there is no maternity

:01:19. > :01:23.leave law. This mother does not think it is right. I do not think

:01:24. > :01:29.it is fair because it puts too much pressure on women not to spend as

:01:29. > :01:36.much time as they can with their babies when they are young. They do

:01:36. > :01:42.not stay babies for a very long. Some private employers to match the

:01:42. > :01:48.UK to laws on maternity leave. But many do not. Childcare bosses want

:01:48. > :01:51.equal right to maternity leave. is absolutely vital we have this

:01:51. > :01:56.maternity legislation in place to enable mothers to spend time with

:01:56. > :02:01.their children, bonding and the taxing in the first year of life.

:02:01. > :02:06.Social security does give cash allowances to mums who have paid

:02:06. > :02:14.contributions. And new law is being drafted which would see new mum's

:02:14. > :02:21.getting 18 weeks off work. It is two weeks' paid maternity leave,

:02:21. > :02:28.with six weeks' unpaid. If you have been employed for 15 months, and

:02:28. > :02:33.title but for a further six weeks. The new law should be in place

:02:33. > :02:43.within nine months, good news for mums and a small victory for

:02:43. > :02:43.

:02:43. > :02:46.Two men appeared in court today in connection with the theft of

:02:46. > :02:49.thousands of pounds worth of jewellery from a Jersey home. Carl

:02:50. > :02:53.Murphy, 47, is accused of burglary and theft at the house in St Martin.

:02:54. > :02:57.44-year-old Lee Anderson is charged with handling stolen goods. The men

:02:57. > :03:01.will next appear in court on 8 December.

:03:01. > :03:05.Thirteen jobs are to go at Guernsey Post as a result of cutting its

:03:05. > :03:09.delivery service to five days a week. The change comes into force

:03:09. > :03:18.in the New Year. The firm says it's a result of steady losses as more

:03:18. > :03:21.people use the internet. As you may have seen on the

:03:22. > :03:26.national news, the European Union has held one of its most important

:03:26. > :03:32.meetings since the end of the Second World War. At stake, how to

:03:32. > :03:37.deal with its debt crisis. The Channel Islands and very much part

:03:37. > :03:42.of the global economy. Mike Wilkins has been looking at the possible

:03:42. > :03:49.effects of last night date with debt.

:03:49. > :03:55.This is the moment of truth, isn't it? That is what one of the media

:03:55. > :04:00.asked Nicolas Sarkozy. The truth is some way off. Banks have accepted a

:04:00. > :04:05.50% loss. The UK bail-out fund will be boosted. Banks will have to

:04:05. > :04:10.raise more capital. Some in the Channel Islands feel it is false to

:04:10. > :04:15.claim that the Eurozone is on the way to recovery. European leaders

:04:15. > :04:19.were strong on rhetoric and short on real accents. There are some

:04:19. > :04:25.good things. They are inching towards a conclusion. I do not

:04:25. > :04:27.think this is somehow the revelation the word was looking for.

:04:28. > :04:34.By what effect will at last night's meeting have on the Channel

:04:34. > :04:39.Islands? Jersey finance say the island is not exposed to get like

:04:39. > :04:44.other countries, but more work is needed to resolve the issues for

:04:44. > :04:47.the long term. It is a similar story in currency. As far as

:04:48. > :04:54.Guernsey is concerned, we should not be unduly concerned. We have to

:04:54. > :04:59.be alert to what is going on. The reality is, people's pensions at

:04:59. > :05:05.stake. The security of bank accounts. These are very high

:05:05. > :05:10.stakes games. The decisions made last night were better than feared

:05:10. > :05:18.but less than many hoped. This is a global problem. It appears we are

:05:18. > :05:21.all going to have to get used to be turbulence in uncertain times.

:05:21. > :05:28.Guernsey's 201 Squadron they have been disbanded, but its links with

:05:28. > :05:32.the island remains. They attended a special ceremony today. It is a

:05:32. > :05:38.squadron affiliated with Guernsey for decades. Having been disbanded

:05:38. > :05:42.earlier this year, former members travelled to the island today to

:05:42. > :05:48.leave a very special mark. The standard will remain here in the

:05:48. > :05:50.hope one day it may be reformed. At a special ceremony attended by

:05:50. > :06:00.representatives from a number of local organisations, the standard

:06:00. > :06:07.was handed over to the Lieutenant Governor. You excellently, -- Your

:06:07. > :06:11.Excellency... I except this standard. It is an enduring symbol

:06:11. > :06:19.of the long-standing and honourable association of 201 Squadron. It was

:06:19. > :06:22.a move that went against normal Rayef protocol. The Guernsey has

:06:23. > :06:27.special permission. It recognises the long affiliation between the

:06:27. > :06:31.island and the Royal Air Force. Having chosen Liberation Day For

:06:31. > :06:36.its last public parade, the squadron has been keen to highlight

:06:36. > :06:41.the importance of its association with Guernsey. It is hoped today's

:06:41. > :06:47.ceremony will have reinforced that. We do hope that in the future of

:06:47. > :06:50.the squadron will -- will reform, and the future officer commanding

:06:50. > :06:56.will have to come here to collect the standard and re-energised the

:06:56. > :07:00.affiliation. Until then, the standard will be kept safe at

:07:00. > :07:05.Government House. We will catch it clean so that at big events to

:07:05. > :07:12.service a reminder of the historic relationship. -- we will catch a

:07:12. > :07:16.glimpse of it. Only three days until the clocks go back. Spare a

:07:16. > :07:23.thought for the man who has been clambering around inside Jersey's

:07:23. > :07:32.churches, changing their clocks, for 65 years. At the age of 77, he

:07:32. > :07:38.is winding down and needs somebody to take over.

:07:38. > :07:45.I left school and drifted into the family business. I suppose I start

:07:45. > :07:51.at working on watches and clocks one knows about 12 years old. It

:07:51. > :08:01.developed from there. The first o'clock I'd saw was at St Lawrence

:08:01. > :08:06.parish hall. It must have been around 1946 or 1947. I have carried

:08:07. > :08:10.on ever since. The problem now is my age and my arthritis. It is very

:08:10. > :08:16.difficult for me to combat growing to some of these trucks clocks

:08:16. > :08:24.because of the steep staircases. -- to come into some of these church

:08:24. > :08:27.clocks. There was nobody to follow me. The Church has to wait for a

:08:27. > :08:35.year until an organisation comes over here, which they do on an

:08:35. > :08:42.annual basis, or they would have to bring them over personally, which

:08:42. > :08:47.would be very expensive. My family and my partner say I should stop.

:08:47. > :08:51.It is alive. It away I am disappointed I have to stop. It is

:08:51. > :09:01.only because my body has become rather more difficult to handle and

:09:01. > :09:02.

:09:02. > :09:09.the clocks. If I had fitter legs, I would not be stopping. There we are,

:09:09. > :09:15.job done. Finally, a baby seal has been rescued in Jersey after it was

:09:15. > :09:20.the way from its mum. The pup, Barnacle, is less than a week old,

:09:20. > :09:28.and was banned on rocks at Corbiere yesterday. Rescuers talking to a

:09:28. > :09:34.local vet. He will be flown to the UK tomorrow. As far as we can tell,

:09:34. > :09:42.Barnacle is doing OK. We got him or her rehydrated, which is the most

:09:42. > :09:52.challenging part. Now we're looking to get Barnacle to somewhere where

:09:52. > :09:52.

:09:52. > :09:58.they are more appropriately able to Good evening. Some patchy rain

:09:58. > :10:04.tonight. A milder night compared to the last few nights. The winds are

:10:04. > :10:10.generally quite light. It may be misty. Whether France in the first

:10:10. > :10:14.half of the night. They move away. We keep a lot of cloud until later

:10:14. > :10:19.that day. High pressure will try things out and give cause some late

:10:19. > :10:25.sunshine. That is unlikely. For the weekend, it gets better. The

:10:25. > :10:31.weather front will approach this on Saturday. It remains to the West.

:10:31. > :10:36.Dry and sunny on Saturday. Some brightness on Sunday. It clouds

:10:36. > :10:41.over later. Unsettled for the next big days. A band of cloud giving

:10:41. > :10:46.outbreaks of rain. Petering out towards dawn. 11 degrees the

:10:46. > :10:53.minimum temperature. Through the day tomorrow, not a great deal of

:10:53. > :11:01.change. Wicky plot of cloud. A few chinks of sunshine break through

:11:02. > :11:11.the cloud. North East wins. For the coastal waters forecast, mainly

:11:12. > :11:23.

:11:23. > :11:30.We will see up to two feet and clean. The forecast for Saturday,
