:00:04. > :00:09.Hello and welcome to Friday's BBC Channel Islands news. Here's what's

:00:09. > :00:13.coming up tonight... Sunny solution - the drive to

:00:13. > :00:16.totally transform the way we get our electricity.

:00:16. > :00:20.Also tonight - latte lifestyle. A rise in coffee shops, but are we

:00:20. > :00:30.set to be caffined out? And Pudsey-perfect - find out why

:00:30. > :00:37.

:00:37. > :00:41.this famous yellow bear has been in Jersey could be about to take its

:00:41. > :00:44.first step towards encouraging eco friendly electricity. The Channel

:00:44. > :00:47.Islands have sunshine and wind aplenty, so measures such as wind

:00:47. > :00:51.turbines and solar power panels are being explored by the electricity

:00:51. > :00:56.company. Jersey's government says money could be provided to invest

:00:56. > :01:04.in the future of renewable energy sources. Anisha Shah has been to

:01:04. > :01:08.meet one family who're already leading the way.

:01:08. > :01:13.Winter is fast approaching and the heating is coming on in homes

:01:13. > :01:16.across the Channel Islands. But the burden of heating bills can take a

:01:16. > :01:23.financial toll. So much so, one family's decided to generate it's

:01:23. > :01:28.own electricity. The solar panels were extremely well. They keep the

:01:28. > :01:32.water hot all the time and hotter in the summer months. It is a bit

:01:32. > :01:38.cooler now, so I have maintained my emergency heater to top up from

:01:38. > :01:45.time to time. It has cut down on my electricity bills by half.

:01:45. > :01:48.But they're not cheap to install, costing several thousands. In the

:01:48. > :01:53.UK, grants are available. And there's a cash-back scheme for

:01:53. > :02:03.those selling electricity back to the grid. In the Channel Islands,

:02:03. > :02:03.

:02:03. > :02:08.there's little. We do have a buy- back tariff in Jersey and there are

:02:08. > :02:13.customers who are enjoying it. One of the big issues is that they are

:02:13. > :02:17.not quite economic revival at this point. The only way of making these

:02:17. > :02:20.technologies work in most cases is if you are able to get access to

:02:20. > :02:23.subsidies. That could be about to change as

:02:23. > :02:31.the Government's looking at a new scheme to rent our roofs to

:02:31. > :02:35.companies that fit solar panels. Some large investors and companies

:02:35. > :02:38.have approached us saying they want to set up the scheme. It could be

:02:38. > :02:41.on its way. It could be the start of a future

:02:41. > :02:44.generation of self-generators. Guernsey's Public Services

:02:44. > :02:48.Department is still considering building an incinerator to get rid

:02:48. > :02:50.of the island's rubbish. The revelation is in an update to

:02:50. > :02:55.deputies on the revised waste strategy, which won't be ready for

:02:55. > :02:58.debate until February next year at the earliest. The letter from the

:02:58. > :03:01.Public Services Minister says the export of waste to Jersey is also

:03:01. > :03:11.being considered. Environmental campaigners say news of an

:03:11. > :03:17.incinerator has come as no surprise. I was part of the consultation

:03:17. > :03:21.process and I could feel that her them about that was very definitely

:03:21. > :03:29.being considered, particularly on the last workshop. It became quite

:03:29. > :03:32.blatant. It is no surprise to me. There are signs of optimism, though.

:03:32. > :03:37.They are going to increase the amount of recycling targets that we

:03:37. > :03:41.are going for, but it should be immovable target. As soon as the up

:03:41. > :03:44.the target, we should be planning to up it again.

:03:44. > :03:45.UK MP John Hemming has tabled a Commons motion, accusing Jersey's

:03:45. > :03:48.legislature, executive and judiciary of political repression.

:03:48. > :03:52.His move follows his urging the British Government to investigate

:03:52. > :03:55.the running of Jersey following the imprisonment of Stuart Syvret. It's

:03:55. > :04:05.unlikely that the motion will ever be debated by the Commons without

:04:05. > :04:08.

:04:08. > :04:10.substantial support from other MPs. Learner drivers in Jersey will have

:04:10. > :04:15.to pass a theory test before getting their provisional licence

:04:15. > :04:18.to drive on the road. The States backed a plan by the island's

:04:18. > :04:22.constables, who think it'll make the roads safer. Teenagers will be

:04:22. > :04:27.able to sit their test up to a year before their 17th birthday so they

:04:27. > :04:30.can still learn to drive the day they turn 17.

:04:30. > :04:33.The British have long been associated with a good old

:04:33. > :04:37.fashioned cup of tea. But do Channel Islanders now prefer

:04:37. > :04:41.coffee? In recent years, there's been an increase in the number of

:04:41. > :04:46.cafes popping up in the island. But is there enough demand to keep them

:04:46. > :04:49.all going? Beckie Williams has been to find out.

:04:49. > :04:56.The smell of freshly ground coffee. It's become a staple in many

:04:56. > :05:00.people's diet. But could you live without it. I'd probably drink

:05:00. > :05:05.about four cubs of coffee a day. I could not live without it. I would

:05:05. > :05:12.have to drink whisky all the time! Everybody loves coffee and I would

:05:12. > :05:17.have about six cubs a day. Too many, sometimes! But I love it. If money

:05:17. > :05:21.got tight, at no way would I give up my coffee. It is too important

:05:21. > :05:24.and essential. It's official - we are an island of

:05:24. > :05:28.caffeine lovers. And here in St Helier, we seem to have our fair

:05:28. > :05:36.share of coffee shops. I've counted at least 15 and that's just on the

:05:36. > :05:39.main highstreet. I haven't seen a coffee shop prior to the last year,

:05:39. > :05:44.so there must be doing a pretty good job of supplying us with what

:05:44. > :05:47.we want. Thank goodness we have all these quirky coffee shops to

:05:47. > :05:50.explore something new. And the coffee shops don't stop

:05:50. > :05:59.coming. Costa's opening here soon, just two doors down from this local

:05:59. > :06:04.cafe. I am really not worried what they do. I look after what I do and

:06:04. > :06:07.I do it well. We sell the best coffee here in Jersey and they have

:06:07. > :06:10.quite a different kind health. So, little concern then about the

:06:10. > :06:13.increasing number of coffee shops in the island. Afterall, it seems

:06:13. > :06:23.we're a nation of caffeine addicts. So could coffee soon take over from

:06:23. > :06:34.

:06:34. > :06:39.a good old fasioned English brew? The newly refurbished public

:06:39. > :06:42.offices opening tomorrow. 16 New Street will be in an eighteenth-

:06:42. > :06:45.century style. There is just two weeks until the

:06:45. > :06:55.Children In Need appeal. People across the Channel Islands are

:06:55. > :06:57.

:06:57. > :07:02.doing their bit for charity. Today, a very special passenger

:07:02. > :07:07.sealed into the Channel Islands. With just two weeks until Children

:07:07. > :07:17.In Need, Pudsey was here to see how a fund-raising preparations are

:07:17. > :07:20.

:07:20. > :07:23.shaping up. Here at Cineworld, the BBC in

:07:23. > :07:26.Jersey will be hosting a special screening of Grease - so a chance

:07:26. > :07:28.to dust off your leather jacket like Pudsey, do a hand jive and

:07:28. > :07:32.join presenters and listeners for a fantastic night out.

:07:32. > :07:35.And there'll be a chance to see a host of popstars like Ed Sheeran

:07:35. > :07:43.here perform at Children In Need Rocks, a special concert in the UK

:07:43. > :07:53.for Children In Need. We're hoping it will be a really exciting

:07:53. > :07:59.

:07:59. > :08:06.evening where everybody dresses up. As well. There will also BP a host

:08:06. > :08:16.of prices up in Jersey. It is bigger and better this year. We

:08:16. > :08:19.

:08:19. > :08:22.have over 50 prizes. We will kick off at 9 o'clock with myself.

:08:22. > :08:25.Here in the Channel Islands, thousands of pounds is raised every

:08:25. > :08:30.year and organisers hope 2011 will be bigger and better than ever.

:08:30. > :08:32.Just make sure you let us know about your fundraising fun.

:08:32. > :08:36.There's an appeal for information after a hamster was found abandoned

:08:36. > :08:39.in a bin bag in Guernsey. Hobo, as she's now known, was discovered in

:08:39. > :08:43.Town Church Square earlier this week. GSPCA Staff were called in to

:08:43. > :08:46.help, and are now trying to get to the bottom of what happened. The

:08:46. > :08:53.charity says Hobo is doing well, but this sort of animal cruelty

:08:53. > :08:57.won't be tolerated. We have contacted the police and we're also

:08:57. > :09:02.looking into other lines of inquiry. There is no excuse for abandoning

:09:02. > :09:07.an animal in a bin bag in town with no food and water. There are other

:09:07. > :09:17.options. We are on the island. If people need to get rid of their

:09:17. > :09:18.

:09:18. > :09:23.pets for whatever reason, we would And now the weather.

:09:23. > :09:28.Colder and staying unsettled this weekend. The rain will start to

:09:28. > :09:33.creep in from the East. An area of low pressure will be with us on

:09:33. > :09:37.Saturday and Sunday. The wind is fairly light. This area of low

:09:37. > :09:40.pressure is giving some wet weather in southern France and the south of

:09:40. > :09:46.Spain. It will move through France and bring the weather front across

:09:46. > :09:50.us during the after noon tomorrow. A lot of cloud and quite breezy. On

:09:50. > :09:55.Sunday, we expect slightly drier conditions but there is still a lot

:09:55. > :09:58.of cloud around giving us a few light spits of drizzle or light

:09:58. > :10:03.rain. The saving and tonight, the showers will fade away and we will

:10:03. > :10:07.start to see some breaks developing in a cloud. Temperatures down to 11

:10:07. > :10:11.degrees. In northerly breeze developing. Through the day

:10:11. > :10:15.tomorrow, after a bright enough start, we will start to see more

:10:15. > :10:21.cloud develop, thickening all the while, and some more persistent

:10:21. > :10:31.Trimble set in. It could be quite damp to end the day. A colder field.

:10:31. > :10:45.

:10:45. > :10:55.13 degrees, the maximum temperature. Times of high water.

:10:55. > :10:56.

:10:56. > :11:01.Four are so for us, there is a northerly breeze.
