:00:13. > :00:16.Good evening and welcome. Noisy, intimidating and needs

:00:16. > :00:26.policing - why children are too scared to play in Jersey's new

:00:26. > :00:29.

:00:29. > :00:31.community park. Honoured for serving Queen and

:00:31. > :00:34.country - Guernsey thanks its World War Two veterans.

:00:34. > :00:44.And a prickly problem - what will happen to sick and injured

:00:44. > :00:45.

:00:45. > :00:47.hedgehogs now their sanctuary is Jersey's new Town Park is to be

:00:47. > :00:52.monitored after claims that young children are being bullied by

:00:52. > :00:55.teenagers. It comes as separate complaints have been made about

:00:55. > :01:03.noise and young people gathering there. All this just two weeks

:01:03. > :01:06.after the park opened. Amy Harris reports. It is the new jewel in St

:01:06. > :01:11.Helier's crown, but there is concern that Jersey's Millennium

:01:11. > :01:14.Town Park is being blighted by anti-social behaviour. It has only

:01:14. > :01:16.been open for two weeks, but already authorities have had to

:01:17. > :01:19.paint over graffiti on play equipment and there have been

:01:19. > :01:29.reports that younger children are too scared to play here because

:01:29. > :01:30.

:01:30. > :01:34.they are being bullied and intimidated by teenagers. I try to

:01:34. > :01:39.come on Saturday with my little one, but it was jam-packed full of

:01:39. > :01:43.teenagers. You could see the younger ones were scared, standing

:01:43. > :01:49.to decide waiting to get on the equipment. I didn't bring her reign

:01:49. > :01:56.because it was too crowded full of all decades. When I have walked

:01:56. > :01:58.past, I have seen teenagers hanging about. You can see younger children

:01:59. > :02:01.getting insecure and nervous about that. Many parents have posted

:02:01. > :02:04.their worries on this Facebook site and two 10-year-olds have even

:02:05. > :02:12.written to the town constable. There are now calls for the area to

:02:12. > :02:18.be better policed. I would like park marshals to be put there, or a

:02:18. > :02:23.police presence to to tear any billion DEC goes on. If we allow

:02:23. > :02:30.our youngsters to be believed, that will go through to their schooling

:02:30. > :02:32.and the workplace. There have also been separate complaints about

:02:32. > :02:35.skateboarders gathering in this area of the park. This footage

:02:35. > :02:41.posted on the internet shows a skateboarder being chased off the

:02:41. > :02:51.site by the honorary police. Now town bosses say the park will be

:02:51. > :02:54.

:02:54. > :03:01.monitored. We are already in discussion with a number of

:03:01. > :03:05.different agencies that will I am sure make sure in the short term to

:03:05. > :03:08.make sure that the park is monitored, that it works and does

:03:08. > :03:10.not give bad memories any children. Youth workers believe it is

:03:10. > :03:13.inevitable that a busy park will experience friction between

:03:13. > :03:19.children, but for park bosses these complaints will be far from the

:03:19. > :03:22.start they wanted. A 27-year-old man has been

:03:22. > :03:25.discharged from police bail in connection with the death of Liga

:03:25. > :03:28.Verse. Guernsey police say it is as a result of reports from expert

:03:28. > :03:31.witnesses, but they say they are making good progress with their

:03:31. > :03:38.investigation. The 24-year-old Latvian was found dead in a flat in

:03:38. > :03:41.Guernsey in August. Guernsey's longest-serving

:03:41. > :03:45.politician is blaming the Policy Council for a lack of progress in

:03:45. > :03:49.the States. Deputy Ivan Rihoy believes much of the problem is

:03:49. > :03:51.down to how senior people are chosen. His committee is

:03:52. > :03:57.recommending a move towards the system adopted by Jersey which

:03:57. > :04:00.involves questioning candidates after their speeches. He thinks the

:04:00. > :04:10.Policy Council is too big and the Chief Minister needs more executive

:04:10. > :04:11.

:04:11. > :04:14.power. The thing is, they don't give enough guidance. We are not

:04:14. > :04:18.getting our policies through. Things are not happening as they

:04:19. > :04:23.should happen and it is costing the taxpayer a lot of money. Certain

:04:23. > :04:28.things are being done that perhaps should not be being done, and

:04:28. > :04:31.things that should be are not been done. What we have to make sure off

:04:31. > :04:34.after the next election is that we get the right people in the right

:04:34. > :04:36.jobs. In Guernsey a group of former

:04:37. > :04:39.military servicemen have been honoured today at Government House.

:04:39. > :04:44.Five former armed service personnel were awarded the Armed Forces

:04:44. > :04:53.Veterans Badge at a special ceremony. Mike Wilkins was there.

:04:53. > :04:58.Honoured today for serving their Queen and country. Thank you very

:04:58. > :05:03.much. And I meant what I said, keep in touch. But, like many old

:05:03. > :05:10.soldiers, modesty is the order of the day for these men. I don't

:05:10. > :05:15.really deserve it. I am an infant in terms of service in regard to

:05:15. > :05:19.other people and what they had done. It is unexpected, but I'm very

:05:19. > :05:25.proud. An important part of these ceremonies is to let any former

:05:25. > :05:31.service personnel know that help is always at hand. One of the things

:05:31. > :05:37.to come out this lunchtime is that a very elderly gentleman here, now

:05:37. > :05:41.in a wheelchair and in a hospital, one of our recipients today

:05:41. > :05:46.mentioned him to me. He is not known to most of the people on the

:05:46. > :05:51.island for his wartime service, but now we can get in touch with him

:05:51. > :05:55.and bring him back into the family and if he has any needs, we will be

:05:55. > :06:00.able to help them through the welfare organisations we have.

:06:00. > :06:03.is important that civilians like myself to remember that we show

:06:03. > :06:06.that we care and appreciates all that they have done. Some of these

:06:06. > :06:12.men may not feel they deserve an award, but here today it was the

:06:12. > :06:14.island that paid tribute. You are watching the BBC in the

:06:14. > :06:18.Channel Islands. Later in Spotlight with Justin and Victoria, find out

:06:18. > :06:28.what's got eight legs and rides a mean wave and has thousands of

:06:28. > :06:30.

:06:30. > :06:33.The parents of a Olivia Jordan Higgins thought it would be a great

:06:33. > :06:37.idea if she spent a week of her summer holidays having a go at golf

:06:37. > :06:41.at a local driving range. She was 13 and had never hit a ball before,

:06:41. > :06:43.but she was pretty good. So good in fact 10 years later she turned

:06:43. > :06:52.professional and has just completed her first year on the American

:06:52. > :06:57.women's Future Tour. Edward Sault takes up the story.

:06:57. > :07:06.Driving off on familiar shores. This is Royal Jersey, where Olivia

:07:06. > :07:13.grew up, but it is in America that she is making her name. I went with

:07:13. > :07:18.no expectations, really. I finished 40th on the money list out of 200

:07:18. > :07:21.people, which I am really pleased with. I think I can only get better

:07:21. > :07:24.from here. Playing in America offers more opportunities than

:07:24. > :07:26.playing in Europe, but life as a tour professional is not easy.

:07:26. > :07:30.Olivia stays with local families and drives the huge distances

:07:30. > :07:40.between events to keep her costs down. She only has her winnings to

:07:40. > :07:41.

:07:41. > :07:45.pay the bills. It is hard. There is nothing worse than missing the cut,

:07:45. > :07:50.when you feel you have played well. You have just got to pick yourself

:07:50. > :07:56.up and move on to the next week. This is my dream and what I have

:07:56. > :08:00.always wanted to do. The sacrifices have to be maids and hopefully, in

:08:00. > :08:03.time, but will pay off. Spending the winter at home allows Olivia to

:08:03. > :08:06.work on her technique and fitness. She will be back on the tour in the

:08:06. > :08:16.New Year, but, for now, Royal Jersey is providing a reassuringly

:08:16. > :08:20.familiar practice ground. It feels good to be back. I miss

:08:20. > :08:25.the sunshine and warm weather, but it is great to come home and

:08:25. > :08:28.reassess everything, keep myself grounded.

:08:28. > :08:30.Now, apparently this time of year is a dangerous time for these

:08:30. > :08:33.little fellows, but Guernsey's Hedgehog Rescue Centre will soon

:08:33. > :08:37.have to close its doors. So, just who will be there to help the

:08:37. > :08:41.Island's prickliest residents? Penny Elderfield reports.

:08:41. > :08:44.The modern world can be a dangerous place for hedgehogs. There are

:08:44. > :08:47.strimmers to contend with, bonfires and busy roads. But, luckily, since

:08:47. > :08:54.2005 Dawn has been running a rescue centre helping hundreds of

:08:54. > :09:02.hedgehogs each year. Six years on, though, the decision has been made

:09:02. > :09:08.to close it. It has been a very hard decision, that we have been

:09:08. > :09:13.struggling for 18 months because of the shortage of volunteers. It

:09:13. > :09:16.became very difficult to cover the rotors and I work seven days a week

:09:16. > :09:19.and it has just got too much. are currently 60 hedgehogs here,

:09:19. > :09:23.all of which will be released, including Rocket, who will be let

:09:23. > :09:33.out later this week. But the centre won't be accepting anymore and the

:09:33. > :09:39.GSPCA has stepped into help. has been passing on our details and

:09:39. > :09:44.people are being made aware that we're taking in these hedgehogs. We

:09:44. > :09:48.have seen three or four hedgehogs a day coming into the shelter. It is

:09:48. > :09:51.a lot more work for ourselves. Dawn the hard work is likely to

:09:51. > :10:01.continue until next spring, when she can release the final hedgehogs

:10:01. > :10:02.

:10:02. > :10:08.at the centre, and finally close it Let's see what the weather is going

:10:08. > :10:11.to do. Good evening. Not a great deal of change in the weather at

:10:11. > :10:15.this evening, but tomorrow at the chance of some rain turning up as

:10:15. > :10:21.more cloud consent of the Atlantic. A weather front gets in close

:10:21. > :10:28.enough tomorrow to bring some rain. Try for tonight and much of the day

:10:28. > :10:33.tomorrow. This is the weather front I'm talking about. That moves

:10:33. > :10:38.somewhat closer towards the south- west by midday tomorrow. Just

:10:39. > :10:42.enough cloud, thick enough to give us some outbreaks of rain during

:10:42. > :10:50.the evening tomorrow. At the time we get into their estate that will

:10:50. > :10:54.have moved away and Thursday should be a bright, dry day. So, as we

:10:54. > :11:00.move towards the weekend, there should be some fine weather around,

:11:00. > :11:07.becoming cloudy into Saturday. Overnight tonight, patchy cloud

:11:07. > :11:11.which will become expensive - - extensive by the morning. Tomorrow

:11:11. > :11:15.we will have a lot of the cloud for much of the day, although it will

:11:15. > :11:19.brighten up for a time in the early afternoon. To end the day we will

:11:19. > :11:26.see some light and patchy rain spilling from the south-west.

:11:26. > :11:36.Temperatures tomorrow up to 13 degrees. It will also become quite

:11:36. > :11:51.

:11:51. > :11:55.The forecasts for Thursday is bright and dry, a little bit cooler.

:11:55. > :12:04.Friday the same, but with more cloud coming in on Saturday and

:12:04. > :12:07.temperatures down a bit on what we A Jersey woman has won a national

:12:07. > :12:10.award for the work she does for animals in the island. Remember

:12:10. > :12:13.Laddy here? He was blind in both eyes. Well, Bunny Roberts arranged

:12:14. > :12:17.him to be flown to the UK on a private jet for specialist

:12:17. > :12:20.treatment. He has now got his sight back and is leading a normal life.

:12:20. > :12:23.It is stories like these that Bunny says got her the award. We are

:12:23. > :12:28.coming up to Christmas now and an animal is not just for Christmas,

:12:28. > :12:33.it is for life. It doesn't matter what it is. Now is the most

:12:33. > :12:37.important time for them. Things are getting difficult to because the

:12:37. > :12:41.economy is not great and people have them for five minutes and then
