:01:02. > :01:05.views on the issues which divide A Guernsey pilot has been sentenced
:01:05. > :01:08.to five years in prison for rape. The incident happened at a Gatwick
:01:08. > :01:11.Airport hotel earlier this year as Penny Elderfield reports. Guilty of
:01:11. > :01:14.rape - this man now faces up to five years behind bars. 58-year-old
:01:14. > :01:17.Adrian Sharrott lived in Guernsey with his wife and family - but
:01:17. > :01:20.worked in the UK at the time of the attack. An experienced pilot
:01:21. > :01:23.working for Thomson airlines he met his victim at a hotel bar at
:01:23. > :01:27.Gatwick airport. The 30-year-old woman said she was raped when they
:01:27. > :01:30.returned to her hotel room in the early hours of the 6th of April
:01:30. > :01:33.last year. During a seven day trial, Lewes Crown Court heard that the
:01:33. > :01:36.woman was so traumatised she was only able to tell close friends
:01:36. > :01:46.about it at first. Sentencing him yesterday the judge said he showed
:01:46. > :01:46.
:01:46. > :01:49.no remorse for his actions, and sent him to prison for five years.
:01:49. > :01:53.Jersey could be forced to import fresh water if there isn't heavy
:01:53. > :01:56.rainfall soon. The dry autumn has left reservoirs very low and that's
:01:56. > :02:06.causing a headache for water bosses. They're now looking to Norway for
:02:06. > :02:07.
:02:07. > :02:13.answers. Edward Sault reports. This is a moot reservoir where I would
:02:13. > :02:21.usually get wed Mar and standing. But it is two-thirds empty. That
:02:21. > :02:24.has prompted Jersey water to takes an extraordinary steps. It this

:02:36. > :02:40.feasible and practical proposition. Very expensive, but it is a worst
:02:40. > :02:47.case scenario. And this is another reservoir. This is what Grands Vaux
:02:47. > :02:53.looks like today - and this is what it should look like. Is it the
:02:53. > :02:56.worst I have seen it? It is not the worse the Jersey Water say the

:03:25. > :03:27.
:03:27. > :03:30.Water bosses really want you to take care of your water, because if
:03:30. > :03:40.we do not, it will lead to strong restrictions, and those
:03:40. > :03:42.
:03:42. > :03:45.There's a warning it'll take more than tighter controls on mobile
:03:45. > :03:47.phones to protect children in the Channel Islands from violent or
:03:47. > :03:50.pornographic websites. There have been calls for telecoms companies
:03:50. > :03:53.to introduce internet filters. It's an idea the chair of Guernsey's e-
:03:53. > :03:56.safety committee supports - but says with so many ways of accessing
:03:56. > :04:01.the internet, educating parents and children about the risks is also
:04:01. > :04:07.key. I think in terms of the responsibility of the companies, it
:04:07. > :04:11.is a good step to take. It is not going to solve the problem low,
:04:11. > :04:16.because children can circumnavigate. They are very savvy, and they can
:04:16. > :04:20.get round filters. We know that. But it is another step to put in a
:04:20. > :04:28.staged -- safeguard. Parents need to know that it is not the only
:04:28. > :04:31.thing that needs to happen. Almost a year after they were introduced,
:04:31. > :04:34.employment laws are helping protect workers in Jersey who've been made
:04:34. > :04:37.redundant. And as Anisha Shah reports, it all came about after
:04:37. > :04:39.the closure of a famous high street store. Three years ago, Woolworths
:04:40. > :04:42.shut its stores right across the British Isles putting thousands out
:04:42. > :04:44.of work. But unlike their UK counterparts, employees in Jersey
:04:45. > :04:54.didn't get a pay-off. That's because there were no redundancy
:04:55. > :05:01.
:05:01. > :05:06.laws. All that changed after a huge public outcry. To be cushioned --
:05:06. > :05:10.it is essential if people are to be cushioned. Some people do not
:05:10. > :05:15.receive any numbers -- redundancy. No statutory notice was given.
:05:15. > :05:18.People were thrown often out onto the street. This woman has already
:05:18. > :05:20.benefited. She lost her job earlier this year, and the two thousand
:05:20. > :05:24.pounds redundancy helped her survive until she found another job.
:05:24. > :05:34.She doesn't want to be identified because of her new job, but she
:05:34. > :05:34.
:05:34. > :05:40.told me what happened. When my -- one of my colleagues phoned me to
:05:40. > :05:46.tell me that the company was going to close, and that is how I knew
:05:46. > :05:54.that I was going to lose my job. How would light of -- life had been
:05:54. > :05:58.without this money? Is what has been quite difficult, but I have my
:05:58. > :06:03.husband who was working at the time. But it really, really helped us a
:06:03. > :06:05.lot. The new law means people like her get statutory payments from the
:06:06. > :06:15.government's interim fund. But further laws will be needed to
:06:16. > :06:17.
:06:17. > :06:20.permanent make sure the Government will pay off if people are laid off.
:06:20. > :06:23.The next Bishop of Winchester says he believes parishes should
:06:23. > :06:26.continue to pay for the upkeep of churches. The Reverend Canon Tim
:06:26. > :06:29.Dakin, who represents Anglicans in the Channel Islands, will take up
:06:29. > :06:35.his post next month. Mike Wilkins caught up with him today on his
:06:35. > :06:40.first official visit to Guernsey. Welcome to the Channel Islands.
:06:40. > :06:44.Take a seat. From what you have seen so far, what do you make up
:06:44. > :06:47.the place? What do you think other key priorities for the Channel
:06:47. > :06:55.Islands in the coming years? think to visit the Channel Islands
:06:55. > :07:00.on this sort of day is very wonderful opportunity to visit as
:07:00. > :07:05.the first official expressions of the islands, but that may deceive
:07:05. > :07:08.people to think that everyone -- everything is fine in the Channel
:07:08. > :07:13.Islands. I am sure there are tensions between those who are
:07:13. > :07:16.wealthy and those who are not so well off, and I'm sure there are
:07:16. > :07:22.other social issues which are present and becoming more public,
:07:22. > :07:30.and I am sure you have the usual weekend challenges around, teenage
:07:30. > :07:36.drinking etc. I think the social expenses that those on the mainland
:07:36. > :07:39.get our similar to those here. people there who are not religious
:07:39. > :07:45.deal that the parish rates are unfair. What is your view on the
:07:45. > :07:49.issue? I want to be careful here. I do not want to tread on toes. But
:07:49. > :07:55.on reflection would be that the built heritage that we all enjoy is
:07:55. > :08:02.something that we should all think about supporting. The church
:08:02. > :08:07.buildings are often used for public events, or those important events
:08:07. > :08:11.that represent stages in life that all sorts of people take part in. I
:08:11. > :08:20.suppose I am saying that if it is a good system and it worked, keep the
:08:20. > :08:26.built heritage going. It sounds like a good idea. Do you do see a
:08:26. > :08:33.day when they could be a bishop a - - a female Bishop of Winchester?
:08:33. > :08:38.Yes, I do. I am supportive of wit - - women bishops, but I am aware of
:08:38. > :08:42.those who are not in support of the theology. I did like to promote the
:08:42. > :08:49.development of us having women bishops. I need to think about
:08:49. > :08:53.those who do not want to -- that to happen. They can be quite
:08:53. > :09:02.complicated indications for the islands around their being a woman
:09:02. > :09:06.bishop. Our contact between here and the -- the mainland and the
:09:06. > :09:16.islands can be complicated. I would say to those watching it, I
:09:16. > :09:24.understand that the islands are not under my diocese. It is a slightly
:09:24. > :09:34.arm's-length relationship. When he arm's-length relationship. When he

:09:34. > :09:39.Time for the weather. The date that is likely we will see rain will be
:09:40. > :09:44.on Friday. It will be slowed League -- slow to move out. Until then, it
:09:44. > :09:48.is dry. A fine evening. Quite a lot cloud initially, but that cloud
:09:48. > :09:52.will break up. We have high- pressure right cross. That news
:09:52. > :09:58.subtly through the night and into tomorrow. That is the weather front
:09:58. > :10:03.the we are talking about. It is a fairly weak affair by the time he
:10:03. > :10:09.gets to us. Not a lot of wet weather. It will be stubborn --
:10:09. > :10:15.stubborn to move on Thursday morning. This evening and tonight,
:10:15. > :10:19.some cloud. Tempters down to seven or eight degrees. Tomorrow morning,
:10:19. > :10:24.we will have a reasonable start today, but perhaps some fog or low
:10:24. > :10:28.cloud will lap on to the coast of Jersey for a while, and in the
:10:28. > :10:33.second part of the day, it will be fine and dry with some sunshine.
