:00:08. > :00:14.Good evening and welcome to your BBC in that alliance. Tonight's top

:00:14. > :00:19.stories: This small but invaluable equipment so that is easing the

:00:19. > :00:22.lives of children with eye problems. Plus a list that will help monitor

:00:22. > :00:27.and protect the birds that live on Orions.

:00:27. > :00:37.And the fighting spirit that has made this Jersey one and a kick

:00:37. > :00:39.

:00:39. > :00:42.boxing world champion. -- our The A new machine is helping

:00:42. > :00:45.improve the lives of children in Guernsey with rare eye conditions.

:00:45. > :00:48.The Guernsey Blind Association has raised thousands of pounds to help

:00:48. > :00:51.pay for the new device which can diagnose problems that would

:00:51. > :00:56.otherwise be undetected. As Mike Wilkins reports, it means children

:00:56. > :00:59.will no longer be forced to travel to the UK.

:00:59. > :01:03.Three-year-old Grace and her mum Claire enjoying a stroll in the

:01:03. > :01:08.winter sun, but they have to walk away from the sunshine and seek the

:01:08. > :01:18.shade as Grace has congenital glaucoma. It means any direct

:01:18. > :01:24.

:01:24. > :01:29.sunlight hurts her eyes and does something like this to her vision.

:01:29. > :01:35.What is that? A bid is a microphone. I like it. Chris will always have

:01:35. > :01:38.more obstacles to overcome compared to other children. -- grace.

:01:38. > :01:44.had to have eyedrops and she had to have an operation when she was 12

:01:44. > :01:48.weeks old. So it is a constant reminder that she has got this

:01:48. > :01:51.condition for life. And then meet young Emma, who has a rare disorder

:01:51. > :01:54.known as Sturge-Weber syndrome, complex epilepsy and is visually

:01:54. > :02:02.impaired. Emma's mum Claire also has to take her daughter to England

:02:02. > :02:07.regularly to monitor her eyes. is getting more difficult as she

:02:07. > :02:10.gets older. She does not sit still and she needs her routine. So

:02:11. > :02:15.sometimes going to the UK can actually cause her quite a lot of

:02:15. > :02:18.distress. But now this tiny bit of kit is making a huge impact. It's

:02:18. > :02:21.called a tonometer and helps measure the pressure in their eyes.

:02:21. > :02:27.It means that the girls can now have a quick check-up on the island,

:02:27. > :02:31.without the regular upheaval of travelling to England. They've got

:02:31. > :02:35.enough problems without compounding them and this has taken away one of

:02:35. > :02:45.their problems. It may be small, but this device is having a big

:02:45. > :02:47.

:02:47. > :02:50.impact on these young lives. Guernsey Police and the Chamber of

:02:50. > :02:53.Commerce have teamed up to take a tough stance on crime this

:02:53. > :02:56.Christmas. The Christmas Cracker initiative aims to let islanders

:02:56. > :02:59.know they are likely to be in a cell over the festive period if

:02:59. > :03:02.they are caught committing a crime. The campaign includes posters and

:03:02. > :03:07.more high-visibility police patrols. 33 species of birds are in danger

:03:07. > :03:09.of dying out in Jersey, according to a new survey. They're now

:03:09. > :03:13.featured in a report into bird populations that's been published

:03:13. > :03:17.for the first time in Jersey. One of the most at risk is the puffin,

:03:17. > :03:20.which has been declining gradually for decades. Amy Harris reports.

:03:20. > :03:25.They're one of Jersey's most endearing guests, drawn to the

:03:25. > :03:29.island in Spring and Summer to nest and breed. Puffins are normally

:03:29. > :03:32.found in this area of the North Coast, but now you'd be extremely

:03:32. > :03:42.lucky to spot them because numbers have dwindled from around 300 to

:03:42. > :03:44.

:03:44. > :03:49.just six, because of global warming and over-fishing. It's a shame.

:03:49. > :03:55.Lots of people used to to one to come and see them. It is by far the

:03:55. > :03:58.British Isles are' most popular bird when it comes to bird-watching.

:03:58. > :04:01.It is not just ornithologist or people who why interested in birds.

:04:01. > :04:04.Puffins are among 33 types of bird on this most-endangered species red

:04:04. > :04:07.list. It's part of a new study monitoring the island's birds by

:04:07. > :04:15.Durrell, the Societe Jersiaise and the Environment Department here.

:04:15. > :04:20.They believe the project will help them focus conservation efforts.

:04:20. > :04:25.The main step is to concentrate on planting schemes. If we can

:04:25. > :04:31.reintroduce Headrow systems and plants, and particularly food

:04:31. > :04:36.species on which the birds rely upon, Perhaps there will be a small

:04:36. > :04:38.part that will encourage them to return. It's hoped in time those

:04:38. > :04:41.initiatives will help reduce the number of endangered birds on this

:04:41. > :04:45.list although with wider factors like climate change also playing a

:04:45. > :04:49.part, there's only so much that can be done. For puffins, there's very

:04:49. > :04:55.little that can be done locally to swell numbers, so it seems there's

:04:55. > :04:58.an uncertain future for these popular visitors.

:04:58. > :05:02.He's been a drug smuggler, best selling author and he wants

:05:02. > :05:06.cannabis legalised. Howard Marks - known as Mr Nice - had his life

:05:06. > :05:09.story made into a movie and tonight he's playing at the Live Lounge in

:05:09. > :05:18.Jersey. He'll be talking about his life and DJing - something he's

:05:18. > :05:23.fallen into in recent years. When I started doing readings, they would

:05:23. > :05:29.often be in the same venues as DJs and musicians so I started making

:05:29. > :05:34.friends with them. So I was asked to DJ occasionally, so I just play

:05:34. > :05:37.records I like. What are you going to be doing here tonight? I don't

:05:37. > :05:43.know yet. It will either be a mixture of dub step and rock and

:05:43. > :05:46.roll or I might go completely mad. Jersey has its fair share of

:05:46. > :05:49.champion athletes but now, add to that, the World Champion female

:05:49. > :05:54.Kickboxer. Monika Markowska juggles a full-time job and full-time

:05:54. > :05:57.training, but fought her way to the title in Dublin this week. Our

:05:57. > :06:07.reporter Anisha Shah has been in the ring to see her steely

:06:07. > :06:11.

:06:11. > :06:13.It's tough at the top. But with a strict training regime and steely

:06:13. > :06:23.determination, she's become the best, fighting off world-renowned

:06:23. > :06:25.

:06:25. > :06:29.kickboxers, to claim the title of World Champion. It has been hard

:06:29. > :06:33.work all year, starting in February when I won the British title. I was

:06:33. > :06:37.told I had a chance to represent Great Britain in the world champion

:06:37. > :06:42.just. From that day, I put everything into it. I train twice a

:06:42. > :06:45.day, every day, seven days a week. Nearly every weekend, I have

:06:45. > :06:49.travelled to England and Ireland are to train with the best coaches

:06:49. > :06:56.and Spar with the best fighters. But being crowned the world's best

:06:56. > :07:01.isn't enough. They say the sky is the limit. Next year is going to be

:07:01. > :07:05.hard as well, because as a world champion I am going to be put in

:07:05. > :07:08.certain kinds of matches against the best of the best. And that is

:07:08. > :07:13.not putting her off. It is that motivation that her trainers say

:07:13. > :07:20.take her to the top. She is so dedicated. She trained seven days a

:07:20. > :07:27.week. She works full-time and she is so devastated -- dedicated. She

:07:27. > :07:31.has a mental toughness, as well. have been working with her for the

:07:31. > :07:35.last six years, on and off, but it is really about the last year that

:07:35. > :07:38.she has raised her game. After the Championships in Dublin this week,

:07:38. > :07:48.you would think that she would take a break. But for this world

:07:48. > :07:48.

:07:48. > :07:52.champion, it is all about keeping the fighting spirit.

:07:52. > :07:54.Now, it may only be the second day of December - but Christmas

:07:54. > :07:58.celebrations are well underway in the Channel Islands. The lights

:07:58. > :08:08.have been switched on in Guernsey, and the Fete de Noue has started in

:08:08. > :08:08.

:08:08. > :08:11.Jersey. Emma Chambers has been The spirit of Christmas has taken

:08:14. > :08:24.are selling food, decorations and gifts in the twelfth year of the

:08:24. > :08:26.

:08:26. > :08:31.festival. It is a festival people enjoy. It has traditional elements

:08:31. > :08:35.and quirky elements. Very quirky on the Continent. Christmas markets

:08:35. > :08:39.happen all over Germany, Austria and France and it is catching on in

:08:39. > :08:45.the UK and becoming a popular thing to do as a weekend break or a treat

:08:45. > :08:54.Along with the Christmas market, there's walks, entertainment and

:08:54. > :08:58.even a free film festival. There is a whole host of different movies.

:08:58. > :09:05.Lots of traditional Christmas favourites. That is all very

:09:06. > :09:09.exciting. You need to phone the arts centre to book a ticket. It is

:09:09. > :09:12.limited seats but they are free to go and watch. The Fete de Noue runs

:09:12. > :09:22.until the 11th of December, to get everyone who visits into the

:09:22. > :09:26.Well, it's official - we've had the mildest November on record in the

:09:26. > :09:36.Channel Islands. The average temperature was 12 degrees. Jersey

:09:36. > :09:38.

:09:38. > :09:41.was very dry, with 75% less rain It seems to have all changed after

:09:41. > :09:46.the rain today. Let's find out about the weekend.

:09:46. > :09:55.We have had a bit of sunshine today across the islands, but one or two

:10:14. > :10:19.another weather system will give us more wet weather on Sunday.

:10:19. > :10:25.Overnight, it will steadily turn worse, with outbreaks of persistent
