:00:38. > :00:48.
:00:48. > :00:54.People in Guernsey want to see more police on the streets. That is
:00:54. > :00:58.according to findings from Community Safety Survey. Drugs,
:00:59. > :01:01.being attacked and burglary were other issues that people felt were
:01:01. > :01:04.problems for the island. But some people feel that perception and
:01:04. > :01:10.reality do not always go hand in hand.
:01:10. > :01:12.Drugs, the root of all evil? Most people in Guernsey thinks so. The
:01:12. > :01:17.latest findings from the Community Safety Survey reveal that people
:01:17. > :01:22.are using, dealing or importing drugs, are considered to be the
:01:22. > :01:26.biggest problem on the island. But people's perceptions are not
:01:26. > :01:30.necessarily indicative of the true crime rate. The fact that drugs are
:01:30. > :01:34.also commonly considered to be among the community could be a
:01:34. > :01:40.concern to the authorities. There is a drug problem on the island and
:01:40. > :01:44.we have to address it. But I do not think it is as bad as other crimes.
:01:44. > :01:50.The crime I have concerned about is the crime of domestic abuse in
:01:50. > :01:56.Guernsey. That can really harm families, individuals. When you
:01:56. > :02:00.look back over the last 10 years, though very serious crimes have
:02:00. > :02:10.happened in domestic situations. When it comes to the problems that
:02:10. > :02:17.
:02:17. > :02:20.the public feels our most To tackle these kind of problems
:02:20. > :02:25.the majority of respondents said they wanted to see more police on
:02:25. > :02:28.the beat. Policing is not just about visibility, there are many
:02:29. > :02:34.occasions where we do not want to be visible in the way that we
:02:34. > :02:38.tackle criminality. That is an important message. Many elements of
:02:38. > :02:42.policing are invisible but they are equally important. We should not
:02:42. > :02:46.just get focused on a simplistic view that if you throw money at
:02:46. > :02:51.policing and have lots of neighbour were policing officers, everything
:02:51. > :02:55.will be all right. It is not. some issues were highlighted as a
:02:55. > :02:58.cause for concern, the majority of people said that when it came to
:02:58. > :03:03.community safety, they were not very worried at all were not
:03:03. > :03:08.worried at all about anything. is a fantastic place to live. What
:03:08. > :03:13.we need to do is small isolated incidents, we should not allow them
:03:13. > :03:16.to be blown out of proportion. Perception and reality can
:03:16. > :03:20.sometimes be two very different things. At a time when some of the
:03:20. > :03:28.public feels threatened and the a authorities maintain that Guernsey
:03:28. > :03:31.is one of the safest places to live, there is no time to be complacent.
:03:31. > :03:35.Jersey's former chief minister believes that the number of states
:03:35. > :03:39.members could be reduced significantly. Terry Le Sueur has
:03:39. > :03:47.called for a smaller government with fewer Constable's or diabetes,
:03:47. > :03:51.but more politicians elected on an island wide mandate.
:03:51. > :03:56.In a state you need both people with an island wide mandate and
:03:56. > :04:02.people with a parish mandate. I think the emphasis increasingly is
:04:02. > :04:05.on the island wide mandate, so my suggestion was to increase the
:04:06. > :04:11.number of senators, rather than decrease them.
:04:11. > :04:16.After four years, covered in scaffolding, work to repair the St

:04:20. > :04:24.-- there is proposals have been decline since 2007. Work is
:04:24. > :04:28.expected to be completed by next summer. There are plans to sell the
:04:28. > :04:32.La Motte Centre to pay for the building work and move the youth
:04:32. > :04:37.club to St James's. An increase in the number of people
:04:37. > :04:40.in Guernsey needing help with debt is expected in the new year. The
:04:40. > :04:45.Citizen's Advice Bureaux says it is likely to get more inquiries after
:04:45. > :04:48.Christmas due to the current economic crisis. Various
:04:48. > :04:54.initiatives are under way to try to prevent people from getting into
:04:54. > :04:58.debt in the first place. This may look like a typical
:04:58. > :05:06.classroom scene, but Catherine is not a teacher. In fact, she is a
:05:06. > :05:09.debt adviser. And for the past few months she has been going to
:05:09. > :05:14.schools in Guernsey to talk finances. The idea is that young
:05:14. > :05:18.people should learn about budgeting early on and therefore avoid
:05:18. > :05:22.getting into trouble later. It is an important live scale and at the
:05:22. > :05:26.earlier that and people think about managing money, the better. When
:05:26. > :05:36.they go out into employment and university, they will have to
:05:36. > :05:37.
:05:37. > :05:41.manage their own money. The lessons may have proved a success with the
:05:41. > :05:50.school, there are more planned in future, but what do the pupils
:05:50. > :05:56.think? It is very useful. You do not understand how much work goes
:05:56. > :06:01.into you Piet -- your parents paying for a holiday. I will not
:06:01. > :06:04.buy things over the top that I do not need. It is very important
:06:04. > :06:10.because if you learn very young, you will remember when you are
:06:10. > :06:13.older. If you start saving now, you'll have money for later and the
:06:13. > :06:17.things you want to buy. We all have lessons to learn in life, but
:06:17. > :06:23.staying out of debt is hope for the one that these teenagers will have
:06:23. > :06:28.mastered. You are watching the BBC and the
:06:28. > :06:38.Channel Islands. Later in Spotlight, how one a lady is still celebrating
:06:38. > :06:42.
:06:42. > :06:46.Christmas with her 1960s fairy Now, do you fancy walking 44 miles
:06:46. > :06:51.this weekend? A group of determined people will be doing exactly that
:06:51. > :06:55.to raise money and awareness of skin cancer. For the 10th year, a
:06:55. > :07:05.group of walkers will pound the island's path and roads in memory
:07:05. > :07:05.
:07:05. > :07:08.Walking the for hope, and battling for wintry weather. But for these
:07:09. > :07:15.islanders that is not stopping them. They have a very special reason for
:07:15. > :07:20.doing this. It is something that is very close to all of their hearts.
:07:20. > :07:25.Peter contracted melanoma and he died of skin cancer. He died within
:07:25. > :07:29.about six months of contracting it. He was just a very good man. He was
:07:29. > :07:33.great with kids and he loved my children. We are doing in his
:07:33. > :07:38.memory. He liked walking and he would have liked to have done
:07:38. > :07:41.something like this. We would talk about this kind of thing over a
:07:41. > :07:47.couple of beers on Friday nights and I felt that we should do in his
:07:47. > :07:51.memory. The crispers walk is now in its 10th year and has increased in
:07:51. > :07:56.popularity since its humble beginnings. -- the Christmas walk.
:07:56. > :08:00.The it has come a long way in terms of participation. We had nine the
:08:00. > :08:05.first year and it has built up and after about four or five years we
:08:05. > :08:12.had over 100 people doing it. This year we have around 185 people
:08:12. > :08:17.taking part in total. 125,000 has been raised so far in the past
:08:17. > :08:23.decade. We try and get as much as we can from the people
:08:23. > :08:29.participating in the walk. They need the money to help them keep
:08:29. > :08:35.going. We are pleased to play our little part in achieving that.
:08:35. > :08:40.Walkers set off a for the 44 mile challenge from here at Ouaisne on
:08:40. > :08:47.Saturday morning. For these four walkers it is a way of keeping a
:08:47. > :08:50.friend's memory alive. Let's hope the weather stays good
:08:50. > :08:56.for them. Guernsey's Christmas ice-skating
:08:56. > :09:04.rink is now open to the public. It has been under construction in St
:09:04. > :09:09.Peter Port's Market Square. The ice rink in parade his guard -- Parade
:09:09. > :09:15.Gardens in St Helier opened as well this evening. Instructors will be
:09:15. > :09:21.there to help people unsteady on their feet. I will teach you to
:09:21. > :09:28.stand up and to skate round safely. If you escape before, I can teach
:09:28. > :09:33.you to go backwards and turn around. -- if you skated before.
:09:33. > :09:37.Are you still stuck for present ideas this Christmas, do you know a
:09:37. > :09:41.sports fan who would love tickets for sports events? Or perhaps
:09:41. > :09:46.someone who would like an iPad 2? Those are just a few of the things
:09:46. > :09:54.that you can go for in the Christmas charity auction on BBC
:09:54. > :09:59.Radio Jersey this Sunday. One of the organisers joined the earlier.
:09:59. > :10:05.It will go very well. We have more lost than we have ever had before.
