:00:12. > :00:16.Hello. Good evening. A very warm welcome to BBC Channel Islands. Our

:00:16. > :00:21.top stories: A legal challenge - our politicians are to sue the UK

:00:21. > :00:26.in a bid to save our online shopping industry. Plus, no bank

:00:26. > :00:31.account, no job. The community scheme offering a lifeline to those

:00:31. > :00:41.in financial trouble. And why no fun-raising means no fun for this

:00:41. > :00:50.

:00:50. > :00:55.Jurnsy and jersey states will take the UK Government to court to try

:00:55. > :01:01.and overcome the decision to scrap VAT relief. Businesses here will no

:01:01. > :01:09.longer be able to sell items to the UK tax-free. Both islands mounted

:01:09. > :01:13.legal challenges to try and change that. Employing hundreds of people

:01:13. > :01:18.Guernsey's mail order industry is big news for the island. Last month

:01:18. > :01:25.it was announced companies based in if Channel Islands would no longer

:01:25. > :01:28.be able to sell goods to the UK VAT-free. Guernsey States are

:01:28. > :01:34.fighting back. It is in the interest of our community to

:01:34. > :01:39.challenge the UK Treasury on the grounds their decision is

:01:39. > :01:43.discimtory under EU law. Our understanding is a simultaneous,

:01:43. > :01:48.but individual action, will be taken by our friends and colleagues

:01:48. > :01:52.in jersey. Suffice to say that the courts will consider all of the

:01:52. > :01:56.different arguments and they will maketary decision in law and it is

:01:56. > :02:02.on that basis that we are hopeful that we will get a favourable

:02:02. > :02:06.outcome. At a cost of 60,000, the policy council think it is money

:02:06. > :02:12.worth spending, given the potential cost to the island if the

:02:12. > :02:16.businesses don't stay here. A woman was sexually assaulted

:02:16. > :02:20.after a night out in St Helier. Police say it happened in Royal

:02:20. > :02:23.Bank Court in College Hill in the early hours of Sunday morning. The

:02:23. > :02:29.27-year-old had become separated from her friends in town. Officers

:02:29. > :02:33.are looking at CCTV footage and doing house-to-house enquiries. An

:02:33. > :02:37.aircraft was forced to return to jersey after it was struck by

:02:37. > :02:41.lightning yesterday. The Flybe flight was five minutes into its

:02:41. > :02:45.climb when it was hit T captain returned to jersey, where engineers

:02:45. > :02:49.spent an hour checking for any damage before the flight resumed. A

:02:49. > :02:54.passenger on board describes the moment the lightning struck.

:02:54. > :02:59.Suddenly there was a loud bang. I looked out of the window, it was

:02:59. > :03:03.followed by like an exploding rainbow. There seemed to be a

:03:03. > :03:07.multitude of colours. It slid down to the back of the plane. There was

:03:07. > :03:13.not any other noise. It all happened very quickly. Obviously

:03:13. > :03:17.people were startled on the plane. The crew were excellent. A new

:03:17. > :03:23.Telecoms research centre opened in jersey today. It is a joint project

:03:23. > :03:29.between Jersey Telecom and the Chinese company UT Starcom. It will

:03:29. > :03:34.test new communication products to market around the world. Today the

:03:34. > :03:41.assistant chief minister, senator Phil Bailhache opened it. They

:03:41. > :03:46.believe it will be advantagous for them and for UT. It will become the

:03:46. > :03:52.strongest player, not only in the Asia Pacific market, but also

:03:52. > :03:57.European. Also we believe that by the very good innovation and faster

:03:57. > :04:01.service, quality to their customers, it will become one of the strongest

:04:01. > :04:06.players in Telecom services here in the European market. More people

:04:06. > :04:09.are seeking help from jersey's Community Savings Group than ever

:04:09. > :04:15.before. The organisation helps people who are struggling to get

:04:15. > :04:17.bank accounts and offers loans to help people with bank problems. Our

:04:17. > :04:26.correspondent has talked to a former prisoner who is trying to

:04:26. > :04:30.get back on his feet. I had a drug addiction to hard drugs. Because of

:04:30. > :04:34.that I became blacklisted, because I spent money on the wrong thing.

:04:34. > :04:38.Martin did not want to appear on camera today. He told me how not

:04:38. > :04:42.being allowed a bank account meant he could not get a job and could

:04:42. > :04:48.not move on with his life once he left prison. I pretty much expected

:04:48. > :04:52.to get knocked back by banks. morning, how can I help you? Martin

:04:53. > :04:57.turned to the team here at the jersey community savings for help.

:04:57. > :05:01.They set up an account for him to put his money into. His story is

:05:01. > :05:06.not unique. They are seeing more and more people who can't get a

:05:06. > :05:09.bank account and who need loans. Last year, they managed OK on their

:05:09. > :05:13.income, now they find they are not managing. It is people they have

:05:13. > :05:18.seen and helped in the past that are proving to be the worry.

:05:18. > :05:24.What we are finding now is certain of our existing customers that have

:05:24. > :05:28.been in the -- had an account with us for four or five years, this

:05:28. > :05:31.year have come back for help over Christmas. There has never been a

:05:31. > :05:35.year where that has happened in the past. Brian says the situation will

:05:36. > :05:40.get worse before it gets better. For Martin, he is now set on

:05:40. > :05:47.getting a job and starting again. I don't think I would have got as

:05:47. > :05:55.far as I have. I think I would have struggled. Thanks to all their

:05:55. > :06:04.support and care while I have been there over the last few years.

:06:04. > :06:10.Moving on now. Major work at one of Guernsey's busiest play grounds is

:06:10. > :06:14.unlikey to happen. 500,000 needs to be found to refurnish the area

:06:14. > :06:19.at Saumerez Park. Peter Sirett says it is money the

:06:19. > :06:23.state does not have. Usually a busy playground, the winter weather was

:06:23. > :06:27.keeping families away from the park today. After all it does not

:06:27. > :06:30.normally feature a water slide. The popularity of this park has taken

:06:30. > :06:34.its toll on the equipment. The environment department thinks it is

:06:35. > :06:38.time for a change. It is in need of maintenance. It is becoming more

:06:38. > :06:41.and more intensive. It has reached the point where we have to think,

:06:41. > :06:46.is it worth putting money into it, or better to start again? I think

:06:46. > :06:51.it is better to start again. plans do that, offering not only

:06:51. > :06:55.new equipment, but a new experience. This area behind me will be turned

:06:55. > :06:59.into a space specifically for children. There'll be another one

:06:59. > :07:03.for toddlers. That area towards the back, over there, will be just for

:07:03. > :07:08.teenagers, catering for as many people as possible. All of the work

:07:08. > :07:14.will come at a cost. That is the big one. It's going to be in excess

:07:14. > :07:22.of ppbz 500,000. The money cannot - - 500,000. The money cannot come

:07:22. > :07:29.from the States. It was provided by the lion's Club. It has been here

:07:29. > :07:34.20 years F we can get the funds it will be good for another 20-plus

:07:34. > :07:38.years. With a tough fund-raising target, there will be those that

:07:38. > :07:46.doubt whether it will and those who question whether the work is even

:07:46. > :07:50.needed. Guernsey comedy duo Justin Chubb

:07:50. > :07:54.and Chris Bran missed out on a British Comedy Award at the weekend.

:07:54. > :07:58.Their show, This Is Jinsy was up against Ronnie Corbett and the team

:07:58. > :08:03.against -- behind Little Britain. Jinsy has been commissioned for

:08:03. > :08:07.second series on Sky. It is based on the writer's experience of

:08:07. > :08:10.island life. Now we will see what the island's weathers going to be

:08:10. > :08:14.like over the next few days. Here's like over the next few days. Here's

:08:14. > :08:18.David. Good evening. Mild air is moving

:08:18. > :08:21.across the Channel Islands. During the day time temperatures in double

:08:21. > :08:25.figures. A lot of cloud which has come in today has produced rain.

:08:25. > :08:29.That is moving out of the way. Overnight, tonight, it becomes

:08:29. > :08:33.mainly dry. We keep a lot of cloud. Another weather system will

:08:33. > :08:38.approach, but probably late in the day and more especially this rain

:08:38. > :08:41.will be an overnight feature. Wednesday starts off wet, stays

:08:41. > :08:44.cloudy with some drizzle. All the while the air is come from the

:08:44. > :08:49.south-west, which means the temperatures will be on the rise.

:08:49. > :08:54.Overnight, tonight, we will keep a lot of cloud. Just a few showers

:08:54. > :08:58.left behind. Temperatures should not fall below nine or ten Celsius.

:08:58. > :09:01.Tomorrow morning, just the chance perhaps of a few breaks in the

:09:01. > :09:05.cloud to let the Sunshine in every now and then. For most of the day

:09:05. > :09:12.it is cloudy. Ten Celsius, the top temperature. The winds from the

:09:12. > :09:16.north-west, which occasionally will be fresh. For our coastal waters,

:09:16. > :09:26.north-westerly four, occasionally five. Mainly clear conditions with

:09:26. > :09:35.

:09:35. > :09:39.good visibility. Times of high Choppy at Vazon. Temperatures will

:09:39. > :09:43.be kept up into double figures. Perhaps they will drop a little by

:09:43. > :09:48.the end of the week. It is a westerly or a south-westerly for

:09:48. > :09:52.the next four days. Rain clearing to drizzle in the afternoon. Bright,

:09:52. > :09:57.but cloudy on Thursday. On Friday another batch of wet weather sets

:09:57. > :10:01.in. That is l be the pattern of weather for Christmas Eve and

:10:01. > :10:10.Christmas Day, quite a lot of cloud and the winds from the west. Here's

:10:10. > :10:13.the summary. Goodbye for now. BBC Radio jersey has been

:10:13. > :10:18.automatically entered for a national broadcasting award after

:10:18. > :10:23.winning Best Local Radio Station. It is entered for an Sony Radio

:10:23. > :10:29.Academy Awards for stations with less than 300,000 lister ins.

:10:29. > :10:34.Channel 103 came a highly commended second. Congregations from across

:10:34. > :10:41.the island spent the weekend enjoying their weekend services.

:10:41. > :10:48.Let's enjoy the congregation at aldny St Anne's Church with their
