:00:19. > :00:23.than usual - hospitality feels the economic pressure.

:00:33. > :00:45.
:00:45. > :00:51.Guernsey's private sector needs to do more to help the island's long-
:00:51. > :00:56.term end employed according to the charity, Action for children.
:00:56. > :01:02.Figures out today show 15-19 year olds at make up 16% of the total of
:01:02. > :01:06.people out of work. Brushing up their CVs, job-hunting
:01:06. > :01:10.and keen to make a fresh start. Some of these young people have
:01:10. > :01:14.been unemployed for a years, living in sheltered accommodation. These
:01:14. > :01:19.three have completed a course to alarm them with the skills to get a
:01:19. > :01:27.job. Guernsey may be a small place but it is quite hard to find a job
:01:27. > :01:33.here. The Caribbean helps you to get on that road of thinking, I
:01:33. > :01:41.will search for a job. I find it hard for me in my condition because
:01:41. > :01:48.I had a liver transplant when I was seven years old. I find it hard to
:01:48. > :01:55.get a job. I have done lots of work experiences. A it is not that good
:01:55. > :02:00.on benefits because you don't get as much as when you are earning.
:02:00. > :02:04.Trying to find a job is hard. have completed a course where they
:02:04. > :02:08.have obtained qualifications in food hygiene, fire safety and first
:02:08. > :02:13.aid. The man who runs the scheme would like to see more jobs offer
:02:13. > :02:20.from the private sector and not just manual work. We have people
:02:20. > :02:25.who could be successful in lots of different lines of work. They just
:02:25. > :02:30.need to be given the opportunity and the support and to understand
:02:30. > :02:36.that they may not fly into it and be brilliant immediately. With the
:02:36. > :02:41.support of ourselves, we can move them on so they can be an asset.
:02:41. > :02:48.At 2011 comes to a close come here are three young people determined
:02:48. > :02:51.to have a prosperous new year. Police investigating the sexual
:02:51. > :02:54.assault on a young woman in Jersey have released CCTV images of
:02:54. > :03:00.witnesses they would like to talk to. They want to speak to the man
:03:00. > :03:03.on screen now he was seen talking to the victim in the -- in La Motte
:03:03. > :03:10.Street. They would also like to talk to these potential witnesses
:03:10. > :03:14.who were in the area at the same time. Be assault happened in the
:03:14. > :03:19.early hours of Sunday morning. Jersey police are looking for
:03:19. > :03:25.witnesses to a number of fights in a St Helier bar. Several rows broke
:03:25. > :03:31.out at around 10 o'clock on Friday night. Several people were arrested.
:03:31. > :03:34.Officers want to hear from anyone involved or who saw what happened.
:03:34. > :03:39.It should be the busiest time of year for Channel Island restaurants
:03:39. > :03:44.and bars. Many rely on piggy -- bigger takings in December to see
:03:44. > :03:47.them through the quieter periods. As the recession bites, fewer
:03:47. > :03:52.customers are willing to splash their cash on Christmas parties.
:03:52. > :03:57.Should our politicians be doing more to safeguard the hospitality
:03:57. > :04:02.industry? Clare Burton has been to see businesses booming and
:04:02. > :04:06.struggling. Lunchtime in the Quayside Bar and
:04:06. > :04:10.there is Christmas parties for office workers, groups of friends
:04:10. > :04:17.and families. Getting in the festive spirit and treating
:04:17. > :04:21.themselves. Christmas is something that we try and hang on to as much
:04:21. > :04:27.as we can. That is the attitude places like this rely on to keep
:04:27. > :04:30.the tills ringing. There are times when people are feeling low and
:04:30. > :04:35.want to celebrate and forget the doom and gloom that is being
:04:35. > :04:40.reported. We have seen here that there are a lot of office parties
:04:40. > :04:45.and they have enjoyed themselves and haven't held back on the wind.
:04:45. > :04:50.Quayside is a new venue but a few hundred yards away, it is a
:04:50. > :04:55.different story as one of the island's old establishment. The
:04:55. > :05:03.Pier used to be a specially busy with Christmas parties but not any
:05:03. > :05:09.more. Looking back at my record 10 years ago, we were fought from
:05:09. > :05:14.November right up to Christmas Eve. We have to diversify. Hospitality
:05:14. > :05:18.is a big employer in Jersey and it has been mentioned that there is an
:05:18. > :05:22.alternative for those in online shopping businesses facing
:05:22. > :05:27.redundancy when the VAT change comes in. If many businesses are
:05:27. > :05:33.struggling, those jobs won't be there and that is something that
:05:33. > :05:38.worries one of our newest states members. Every pound given to the
:05:38. > :05:43.tourist economy by the taxpayer is not a pound spent, it is a pound
:05:43. > :05:47.invested. Those that can afford it, they enjoy a festive splurge and
:05:47. > :05:54.politicians have a tricky recipe to mull over as they tuck into their
:05:54. > :05:58.Christmas dinners. You one thing Jersey's Government
:05:58. > :06:03.is spending money on is television advertising.
:06:03. > :06:06.This is the new advert promoting Jersey and it is paying an extra
:06:06. > :06:11.70,000 for a campaign on UK television between Christmas and
:06:11. > :06:16.New Year. They see the adverts will highlight the island when people
:06:16. > :06:21.are starting to think about their holidays. Television is working. We
:06:21. > :06:25.are building on the success of last year's television campaign. The
:06:25. > :06:30.extra money we are investing will bring the campaign forward so we
:06:30. > :06:33.can get the advantage of the post- Christmas period. We get better
:06:33. > :06:39.coverage and value-added is when people are considering next
:06:39. > :06:45.summer's booking. Meanwhile Visit Guernsey sent out
:06:45. > :06:50.the pressures in November. It says it is the earliest destination to
:06:50. > :06:54.do this and will encourage bookings. It is planning articles in the
:06:54. > :06:59.trade press in January. Whilst a trip to the North Pole may
:06:59. > :07:05.be more in keeping with the season, a Guernsey man has made it to the
:07:05. > :07:10.South Pole, breaking a world record in the process. Jason toccata
:07:10. > :07:16.smashed the record for the fastest over lined -- overland journey to
:07:16. > :07:22.the landmark. He beat the current record by night -- 29 hours.
:07:22. > :07:26.Back home and how much do you know about Jersey's chases. Robin
:07:26. > :07:34.Pittman has written a new Paul Gadd getting you working -- walking from
:07:34. > :07:44.one church to another. Robyn took Edward Sault on a tour of two of
:07:44. > :07:57.
:07:57. > :08:03.Walking into the grounds of St Ouen churches. It is one of Robin's
:08:03. > :08:07.cherishes. It is his favourite. What I like about St Ouen is the
:08:07. > :08:17.fact that you can hear the surf breaking and you have wonderful
:08:17. > :08:21.
:08:21. > :08:27.views over St one -- St macro's Bay. This church forms part of the 4th
:08:27. > :08:31.church that Robin has written about. I have interviewed all 12 rectors.
:08:31. > :08:37.They talk about their beliefs, what their definition of God is, how
:08:37. > :08:42.they pray and their approach to some of the problems that the
:08:42. > :08:48.Church of England faces each day. It probably will be my last in this
:08:48. > :08:55.series. I can't think of any more journeys in Jersey that I could do.
:08:55. > :09:00.If our journey continued on to his next favourite church. This really
:09:00. > :09:05.is my favourite. It is the earliest medieval architecture in Jersey and
:09:05. > :09:13.it has lots of delight for things in it. This font is worth
:09:13. > :09:19.mentioning. It is made of two pieces of Jersey granite and it was
:09:19. > :09:23.chucked out at the time of the Reformation. In 1845, some
:09:23. > :09:28.picnickers on the slopes nearby a found it. Here it is in the church
:09:28. > :09:36.again. In retirement it has been enormous fun. I don't make a huge
:09:36. > :09:41.amount of money out of its. That is not the object. I enjoy doing it.
:09:41. > :09:51.It may be the last blocking the series but for Robin, it is the
:09:51. > :09:51.
:09:51. > :09:59.journey that has been so rewarding. Is it going to be walking weather?
:10:00. > :10:06.Good evening. As we move towards the festive season, there is not
:10:06. > :10:10.much changed. We have slightly colder air on Friday. Birthdays
:10:10. > :10:19.look reasonably present with temperatures in double figures. --
:10:19. > :10:24.both days. There is a lot of cloud cover and we remain mild. By
:10:24. > :10:29.lunchtime tomorrow, hardly any change. This line of cloud and rain
:10:29. > :10:35.will come in on Friday and it will introduce wet weather. That will
:10:35. > :10:40.move through late in the day and behind it, some cold air. Some
:10:40. > :10:46.possibilities of some single figures on Friday night into
:10:46. > :10:52.Saturday morning. We have some light rain and drizzle here and
:10:52. > :11:00.there. Westerly winds and ten Celsius is the temperature.
:11:00. > :11:10.Tomorrow morning, we have a dull start. 13 Celsius is the highest
:11:10. > :11:31.
:11:31. > :11:39.temperature. It for our coastal Let us have a look at the outlook.
:11:39. > :11:46.Friday is the day when we will see some more persistent rain. A little
:11:46. > :11:55.bit cold on Friday night. Saturday and Sunday, quiet, perhaps some
