:00:10. > :00:14.Good evening, welcome to BBC Channel Islands. Coming up: From

:00:14. > :00:18.the box to the booking line, is this 2D at reviving tourism's

:00:18. > :00:24.fortunes? Plus cleaning up and counting the

:00:24. > :00:28.cost, thousands of pounds are spent clearing oil that is still there.

:00:28. > :00:38.And we really at the highs and lows, the medals and promotions, looking

:00:38. > :00:45.

:00:45. > :00:49.back at a year in Channel Islands Jersey's tourism website had its

:00:49. > :00:54.biggest ever day yesterday. 10,000 more potential holidaymakers

:00:55. > :01:00.visited the website than on the same day last year. It has raised

:01:00. > :01:05.hopes 2012 could be a good year for tourism. But will those clicks be

:01:05. > :01:09.converted into visitors? Today's weather may not show Jersey of in

:01:09. > :01:18.its best light, but hopes of getting more visitors this year are

:01:18. > :01:23.being pinned on days. It is the new advert by Jersey Tourism. It was

:01:23. > :01:29.launched on Boxing Day and features locals like Nerina Pallot, Arthur

:01:29. > :01:35.Lamy and Nick Romeril and it seems to have done the trick. Yesterday

:01:35. > :01:41.compared to last year we had 14,000 visits to the website compared to

:01:41. > :01:46.just 4000 last year. Simon Le Huray is in charge of marketing, but can

:01:46. > :01:51.he convert that interest into cash- spending tourists? We will be

:01:51. > :01:55.working very closely with the tour operators and we will be working

:01:55. > :01:59.with the hotel accommodation providers to make sure they have

:01:59. > :02:06.got as best visibility they can to convert those who are looking into

:02:06. > :02:10.booking and coming. One of those hoteliers is Steve Clipp.

:02:10. > :02:14.advert is 30 seconds and they have done a wonderful job, but we have

:02:14. > :02:19.still got to get the message out there about the quality and the

:02:19. > :02:29.value we can offer. Whether we are doing that on that is a matter of

:02:29. > :02:34.debate. Some welcome and positive news, certainly for the bosses in

:02:34. > :02:38.the building behind me. They will be working to ensure the interest

:02:38. > :02:42.generated from the advert converts into people coming over to the

:02:42. > :02:48.island and spending their money in 2012.

:02:48. > :02:53.Clearing mud from St Ogden's harbour will cost Jersey 300,000.

:02:53. > :02:57.A mound will be removed in March, followed by dredging in September.

:02:57. > :03:04.The boats will be moved during the work which is being paid for out of

:03:04. > :03:09.the harbour's department Trading Fund. It is 10 years since we last

:03:09. > :03:15.dredged the harbour. It causes problems for the boat owners to

:03:15. > :03:20.access their boat. Meanwhile, work starts tomorrow on the first stage

:03:20. > :03:23.of Guernsey's airport runway redevelopment. This junction at

:03:23. > :03:28.Route de la Tourelle is being realigned. It should be completed

:03:28. > :03:33.by the end of the month. Work within the airport boundary is

:03:33. > :03:38.expected to begin in March. There will be a little bit of disruption,

:03:38. > :03:42.Route de la Tourelle will be closed for about three weeks. Long term it

:03:42. > :03:47.improves quite dramatically that junction area. We have had feedback

:03:47. > :03:52.from members of the public during the consultation process and they

:03:52. > :03:57.were expressing concerns about the way the junction currently works.

:03:57. > :04:03.It is unclear how much it will cost to completely clean up an oil-

:04:03. > :04:07.filled quarry in Guernsey. Last year, 30,000 was spent trying and

:04:07. > :04:14.whilst it has made a big difference, the problem remains.

:04:14. > :04:19.It is thick, smelly and pretty disgusting and it came from a ship.

:04:19. > :04:25.The Torey Canyon oil tanker struck a reef off the Isles of Scilly in

:04:25. > :04:30.1967. More than 30 million gallons of oil poured into the sea, some of

:04:30. > :04:34.it ending up in Guernsey. At that time the decision was taken to

:04:34. > :04:39.store it at this quarry, but 40 years on it is still causing

:04:39. > :04:44.problems, although this is nothing compared to a couple of years ago

:04:44. > :04:48.when the authorities started using special bacteria. It has been

:04:48. > :04:54.successful and if you look at the quarry there is not much or left on

:04:54. > :05:00.the surface, but what is there is very thick. We would have liked all

:05:00. > :05:05.the oil to be removed, but we are at the mercy of the micro organisms

:05:05. > :05:09.and they will eat the or at their own speed. We would like to see it

:05:09. > :05:15.all gone. We have now got a manageable amount that we can

:05:15. > :05:21.mechanically removed by hand, using buckets, and then it will go off in

:05:21. > :05:24.tankers to be recycled. But with no idea of how much oil remains hidden

:05:24. > :05:30.beneath the water it is impossible to predict how much it will cost to

:05:31. > :05:35.keep the quarry clear or how long it will take.

:05:35. > :05:43.You are watching the BBC and the Channel Islands. Later in Spotlight

:05:43. > :05:48.we meet the man who is determined to become a Chelsea pensioner.

:05:48. > :05:54.A New Year brings new challenges for the Channel Islands' elite

:05:54. > :06:02.sportsmen and women. 2011 saw Jersey rugby club and Guernsey

:06:02. > :06:12.football club enter English leagues. 2012 has a lot to live up to. Tim

:06:12. > :06:12.

:06:12. > :06:19.Pryor looks back on some of last year's highlights.

:06:19. > :06:23.Guernsey's first big winner of 2011 was Alison Merrien, becoming world

:06:23. > :06:29.indoor bowls champion in January. The gee-gees brought Jersey's first

:06:29. > :06:33.big win when Balla Briggs won the Grand National in April.

:06:33. > :06:37.In football and in May the inter- insular clash, the Muratti Vase,

:06:37. > :06:41.was reclaimed by Jersey in a dramatic penalty shoot-out, but

:06:41. > :06:48.only after a lacklustre match, leaving the balls and Happy and

:06:48. > :06:53.demanding more of sanding. performance was quite shacking. --

:06:53. > :06:58.shocking. They have to get things together and do ex-professional a.

:06:58. > :07:02.The big football story was Guernsey St being officially accepted into

:07:02. > :07:08.the English league. They are playing in Division One of the

:07:08. > :07:13.Combined Counties League and begin this year the top of the table.

:07:13. > :07:19.It is a fantastic opportunity for the current players in the Guernsey

:07:19. > :07:23.team, and also the guys who are trying to get into the squad. It

:07:23. > :07:30.gives us an opportunity of a number of games to play week-in and week-

:07:30. > :07:34.out. Promotion could be theirs in 2012. Promotion is what Jersey

:07:34. > :07:42.rugby club will be chasing as well. They moved up to National League

:07:42. > :07:49.One at the end of May by beating Loughborough students 30-5. Jersey

:07:49. > :07:52.is going up! They are off to a flying start this season, currently

:07:52. > :07:57.second in the league. Another promotion would take them into the

:07:57. > :08:03.championships. We do not fear anybody in this league. We have

:08:03. > :08:08.played every side. On our day we can beat anybody in this league and

:08:08. > :08:12.in any given conditions will stop we have to have a bit of luck with

:08:12. > :08:17.injury and referee decisions, but we feel as though we are in control

:08:17. > :08:21.of our destiny. In June we are all going on a summer holiday to the

:08:21. > :08:28.Isle of Wight for the Island Games. Guernsey topped the medals table

:08:28. > :08:34.with an incredible 41 golds. Jersey got 21, zag got one gold and one

:08:34. > :08:44.bronze, but ordinary left empty handed. All eyes are now on Bermuda

:08:44. > :09:13.

:09:13. > :09:16.2013. Here are some of our Everyone has really enjoyed it, we

:09:16. > :09:26.have had some magnificent performances with lots of records

:09:26. > :09:29.

:09:29. > :09:33.broken. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. And what of the Channel

:09:33. > :09:36.Islands' international sporting superstars? In October Matt Banahan

:09:36. > :09:41.played in three of England's rugby matches in the World Cup in New

:09:41. > :09:45.Zealand. He is hoping to make the squad next month for the Six

:09:45. > :09:48.Nations. Its Jenson Button Dennis second in

:09:48. > :09:51.the Formula One rankings and he will be chasing the top spot next

:09:51. > :09:58.season. Our big tennis hope, Heather Watson

:09:58. > :10:01.of Guernsey, broke into the top 100 women players in the world. Playing

:10:01. > :10:11.in the seniors competition has been a challenge, but she is young and

:10:11. > :10:14.

:10:14. > :10:18.determined, so watch out 2012. Rest assured BBC Channel Islands

:10:18. > :10:26.will be there every step of the way bringing you all of our sporting

:10:26. > :10:30.achievements in 2012. Strong winds and rough seeds -- sees it minute

:10:30. > :10:36.high-speed ferry services to the UK and France have been cancelled for

:10:36. > :10:40.the next 24 hours. Condor's slower ferry is still running to and from

:10:40. > :10:46.Portsmouth and passengers will be rebooked on to the Commodore

:10:46. > :10:54.clipper. You can hear the latest on any travel disruption on the radio.

:10:55. > :10:59.Let's see what else the weather has After that very wild weather we

:10:59. > :11:05.have seen today it is a little quieter overnight tonight. Still

:11:05. > :11:09.areas of one or two showers, but the strong wind is moving away from

:11:09. > :11:14.us. There will still be some showers over the next couple of

:11:15. > :11:20.days. A brisk westerly wind giving some quite strong gusts of wind and

:11:20. > :11:24.there will be a few showers. By the time we get into Thursday we will

:11:24. > :11:30.have had some white weather overnight, although Thursday itself

:11:30. > :11:36.is mainly dry. Those wins that will drop overnight tonight. Also colder

:11:36. > :11:40.air follows the rain. As low as eight degrees tonight and the winds

:11:40. > :11:45.from the north-west will remain strong. Tomorrow morning it is a

:11:45. > :11:51.bright start, then it clouds over in the afternoon. By the end of the

:11:51. > :11:56.day it is thick enough for showers. Westerly winds back will be strong

:11:56. > :12:06.to near gale force at times. They made up first thing in the morning

:12:06. > :12:17.

:12:17. > :12:22.and pick up again during the day. The residual strength of wind will

:12:22. > :12:30.keep the waves sizable over the next few days. They could be up to

:12:30. > :12:35.eight feet and rather choppy. This is the forecast enter the weekend.

:12:36. > :12:41.Friday is mainly dry, less windy, but temperatures of a similar

:12:41. > :12:51.figure. On Saturday there is some sunshine, but also the risk of a

:12:51. > :12:52.
