:00:09. > :00:12.Good evening and welcome to the BBC in the Channel Islands. Gale force

:00:12. > :00:15.winds and stormy seas - two boys are lucky to be alive after going

:00:15. > :00:20.fishing in a dingy. Helping the community as well as

:00:20. > :00:23.yourself - why volunteering can get you the job you want.

:00:23. > :00:33.And the little girl who's beaten cancer and is now learning to look

:00:33. > :00:36.

:00:36. > :00:46.She really enjoy is going to school. She has a lot of friends and we are

:00:46. > :00:51.

:00:51. > :00:56.very happy to be here. A miracle Two young boys from Guernsey have

:00:56. > :01:00.had a lucky escape after being stranded in stormy seas. The pair

:01:00. > :01:05.headed out in a dinghy to go fishing boats and got into

:01:05. > :01:09.difficulty as they battled high waves and strong winds.

:01:09. > :01:13.The stormy weather this week has kept many people from the beaches.

:01:13. > :01:17.Yesterday afternoon, two brothers decided to go fishing in St

:01:17. > :01:22.Sampsons. Rather than casting their lines from the shore, they headed

:01:22. > :01:26.out to sea. This is big dinghy that the two boys went fishing in but

:01:26. > :01:31.they got into difficulty when it was swamped with water. Things got

:01:31. > :01:36.so bad that the two boys decided to swim for it. The waves were too

:01:36. > :01:41.strong and they were forced back to the boat. Luckily for them, a

:01:42. > :01:47.passer-by saw they were in distress and raised the alarm. The ambulance

:01:47. > :01:53.and rescue Service came and a lifeboat was launched.

:01:53. > :01:59.They were both an injured but very cold and very wet. Both has been in

:01:59. > :02:03.the water for 5-10 minutes. They have been struggling to get back to

:02:03. > :02:06.shore and has been unsuccessful so got back in the dinghy. If the

:02:06. > :02:10.brothers may have been cold and frightened after their ordeal but

:02:10. > :02:20.they are alive and have learnt an important lesson when it comes to

:02:20. > :02:21.

:02:21. > :02:24.respecting the forces of nature. Franz's nuclear watch doubt one's

:02:24. > :02:28.safety improvements made to the 58 power plants. It follows stress

:02:28. > :02:32.tests carried out after the Japanese earthquake last year. They

:02:32. > :02:36.are to nuclear reactors close to the Channel Islands on the coast of

:02:36. > :02:43.Flamanville. It says never add -- it says no other reactors need to

:02:43. > :02:47.be shut down that additional measures are needed to prevent it

:02:47. > :02:52.from spreading. If work starts on the road leading

:02:52. > :02:57.to Jersey Airport tonight. The road running from Beaumont Hill past

:02:57. > :03:02.Jersey Rugby Club for will start in March. It will cost three quarters

:03:02. > :03:08.of a million pounds. Any person in charge of the Brook

:03:08. > :03:16.Sexual Health service -- Brook Sexual Health service says there is

:03:16. > :03:23.no Dave Vitty about sexual health. She says the service employees

:03:23. > :03:27.people who are mainly funded by the Government. They want to find out

:03:27. > :03:31.how the service could be better. We are concentrating on getting

:03:31. > :03:37.young people's views on how we can improve the service to better suit

:03:37. > :03:41.them so we are supporting them as best we can. I am interest in

:03:41. > :03:47.working with the outside agencies for youth on the island to make

:03:47. > :03:52.sure we have good links and they feel we are doing what they want.

:03:52. > :03:59.Ideally, we want to get young people understanding about

:03:59. > :04:01.contraception so we get the abortion rate down as well.

:04:01. > :04:06.The Association of Josie charities says the number of people

:04:06. > :04:10.volunteering in the island is on the rise. -- the Association of

:04:10. > :04:15.Josie charities. They are offering their services to local charities

:04:15. > :04:21.for free. We have been to meet some volunteers hoping to get back into

:04:21. > :04:24.paid work. It is all change for John. He

:04:24. > :04:33.worked in banking for two decades ago when he lost his job two years

:04:33. > :04:37.ago, he decided to give volunteering a go. He now helps

:04:37. > :04:42.here at the charity shop. It was depressing when I lost my job.

:04:42. > :04:47.Working with the charity gives me a purpose for getting up in the

:04:47. > :04:55.morning and applying for jobs and quite simply, I can interact with

:04:55. > :05:00.people here rather than sit at home doing nothing. John hopes

:05:01. > :05:05.volunteering will help get him a paid job. Should everyone out of

:05:05. > :05:11.work be doing their bit for charity? I would be in favour of

:05:11. > :05:17.compulsory volunteering because it would be a negative. Volunteering

:05:17. > :05:23.means you want to do it. They would not want people forced upon them.

:05:23. > :05:27.Volunteering is beneficial to people who are out of work.

:05:27. > :05:32.Compulsory charity work may not be an option for the island but it has

:05:32. > :05:39.helped Bonnie. She volunteers for the National Trust for Jersey and

:05:39. > :05:43.has found paid work. It is totally worth it. You can go and play golf

:05:43. > :05:47.but you are not really contributing or putting back into the island.

:05:48. > :05:52.The years that I have been here, I have been a mother and working

:05:52. > :05:57.mother and to get to a time when you want to put a little bit back

:05:57. > :06:04.into Jersey. John continue to search the jobs market and believes

:06:04. > :06:09.volunteering has given him new skills for a new job.

:06:09. > :06:13.And as idea now to boost shopping in St Helier is to offer free

:06:13. > :06:17.parking. Town-centre bosses have suggested free parking could be

:06:17. > :06:21.possible on one day a week for a couple of hours. It would be in a

:06:21. > :06:24.bid to encourage islanders to spend money in town. It follows a

:06:24. > :06:27.questionnaire on the needs of shoppers. We have to talk to the

:06:27. > :06:33.public. We have done a questionnaire on what they feel

:06:33. > :06:39.about things. We have to look at that and suggest a few projects.

:06:39. > :06:49.Baps free parking after 3pm for a few people. -- perhaps free parking

:06:49. > :06:59.for people after 3 o'clock. Later in Spotlight, the young boxer

:06:59. > :07:02.

:07:02. > :07:08.who is fighting back after losing Now, cast your mind back to Emilia

:07:08. > :07:16.Zubeck, the Jersey girl who was diagnosed with throat cancer and

:07:16. > :07:21.went -- had a life-saving operation in Vienna. Bowe was possible after

:07:21. > :07:27.people did Deakin to it -- dug deep in -- as was possible after people

:07:27. > :07:31.dug deep into their pockets. Today, she went to school for the first

:07:31. > :07:38.time. This is Emilia Zubeck who had her

:07:38. > :07:42.oesophagus removed. She had been diagnosed with cancer. This is at

:07:42. > :07:47.Emilia now. She is eating and drinking normally and the Pride for

:07:47. > :07:54.her parents is clear on their faces. It is hard to believe that

:07:54. > :08:04.something like that happened to have. We always say that she is a

:08:04. > :08:06.

:08:06. > :08:11.good example of proof that you can fight and win. I have got Santa

:08:11. > :08:20.clause on my window. With breakfast done and her hat and gloves on, it

:08:21. > :08:30.is time for Emilia and her mum to walk to school. Would you like

:08:31. > :08:31.

:08:31. > :08:38.about the school so much? When we are doing art. And when we are

:08:38. > :08:45.painting and doing our portraits of ass. Emilia arrives and meets up

:08:45. > :08:50.with her friends. My name is Emilia. It is something her parents thought

:08:50. > :08:55.she would never be able to do. is so happy. She really enjoy is

:08:55. > :09:02.going to school. She has a lot of friends and we are very happy and

:09:02. > :09:08.can't believe that this could happen. It is a miracle for us.

:09:08. > :09:13.Good morning Emilia. Because of her cancer, going to

:09:13. > :09:17.school was unthinkable for Emilia and her family five years ago. She

:09:17. > :09:22.has been through a lot despite a young age. Now they are living

:09:22. > :09:29.every day as it comes. We don't worry about the little things like

:09:29. > :09:33.today or tomorrow. We don't make plans. Emilia has a check-up in

:09:33. > :09:40.Southampton in a free week's time. Their family are hoping it will be

:09:40. > :09:47.the all clear and they are hoping they will be able to start the new

:09:47. > :09:57.year with a new future. Isn't she gorgeous? Now a look at

:09:57. > :09:58.

:09:58. > :10:05.Good evening. It stays unsettled this week with another batch of wet

:10:05. > :10:12.weather coming. We are expecting gale-force winds first things --

:10:12. > :10:16.first thing tomorrow morning. Look at these whether France as they

:10:16. > :10:21.trickle down through Ireland, passing through the south-west of

:10:21. > :10:24.England and arriving across the Channel Islands tomorrow. The

:10:24. > :10:30.strength of the wind is picking up overnight tonight with blustery

:10:30. > :10:34.conditions first thing tomorrow morning. By Friday, it is quieter.

:10:34. > :10:40.Still rather cloudy through the afternoon and further outbreaks of

:10:40. > :10:45.rain. The rain is light and patchy but becoming more widespread

:10:45. > :10:49.tonight. Windy with westerly gales and temperatures no lower than

:10:49. > :10:54.eight Celsius. Tomorrow, a wet start and gradually through the

:10:54. > :11:00.morning, it will brighten up. Temperatures getting up to 11

:11:00. > :11:10.Celsius. Still blustery and gale- force winds through the morning but

:11:10. > :11:35.

:11:35. > :11:40.Looking ahead, Friday's forecast is rather cloudy and after a bright
