:00:05. > :00:09.Good evening. Welcome to your BBC in the Channel Islands. Here are

:00:09. > :00:16.the top stories. Off the radar. Why Guernsey Airport

:00:16. > :00:22.redevelopment doesn't include a new Plus, local learning. Plans to

:00:22. > :00:32.offer more degree courses in Jersey. And the Guernseyman who's just been

:00:32. > :00:34.

:00:34. > :00:39.to the South Pole and is now heading for Africa.

:00:40. > :00:42.80 million and one big missed opportunity. That's the verdict of

:00:42. > :00:46.some in the aviation industry about the redevelopment of Guernsey

:00:46. > :00:50.Airport. The runway and apron areas will be moved and updated in what

:00:50. > :00:53.is already the island's biggest ever capital project. But some are

:00:53. > :01:01.asking why it isn't going further, by moving the control tower and

:01:01. > :01:05.increasing the apron space for commercial traffic.

:01:05. > :01:07.Keeping a close eye on aircraft and all that moves around the airport.

:01:07. > :01:14.Guernsey's control tower will survive intact when it work when

:01:14. > :01:16.work begins to upgrade Guernsey's runway and apron areas in March.

:01:16. > :01:19.Jersey recently spent almost 12 million relocating and

:01:19. > :01:28.reconstructing a new air traffic control tower, but there are no

:01:28. > :01:32.plans to even build a smaller version in Guernsey. As you can see

:01:32. > :01:36.in the background, the control tower is situated on the south side

:01:36. > :01:43.of the wrong way. Some feel that the tower should have been

:01:43. > :01:47.relocated here, to the north side. We would have liked to have seen it

:01:47. > :01:51.on the North Side. Perhaps we missed an opportunity a while ago,

:01:51. > :02:00.when there was refurbishment on the control room and administration

:02:00. > :02:10.block. At that stage, if it had been moved to the north side, it

:02:10. > :02:15.would have allowed a much larger and continuous apron parking area.

:02:15. > :02:20.It is requiring exterior work and we are currently looking at doing

:02:20. > :02:27.some refurbishment. However, we have to be mindful of what is

:02:27. > :02:31.financially possible to do. Therefore, it is inappropriate to

:02:31. > :02:35.discuss a wish list rather than reality. Hindsight can be a

:02:35. > :02:40.wonderful thing, but some feel this is not a problem of the past, it is

:02:40. > :02:44.a problem of the present and will continue to be one in the future.

:02:44. > :02:48.Unemployment in Guernsey has gone up by almost a third in the past

:02:48. > :02:51.year. There were 367 registered job seekers at the end of December.

:02:52. > :03:01.That's 1.1% of the population. The Social Security Minister says the

:03:02. > :03:03.

:03:03. > :03:07.rise is a concern. There is a seasonal element to it and as we go

:03:07. > :03:12.into summer, we hope they will reduce. But there are things like

:03:12. > :03:18.the effect of LVCR. We do not know what the outcome of the legal

:03:18. > :03:20.challenge will be and how business will react. There are concerns but

:03:21. > :03:24.also optimism. Meanwhile, an initiative to bring

:03:24. > :03:27.super-fast internet speeds to Jersey will create 100 new jobs.

:03:27. > :03:29.The States is working with Jersey Telecom, who are investing millions

:03:29. > :03:34.in connecting every home and business to a new fibre-optic

:03:34. > :03:40.network. Job seekers will be matched with the posts created by

:03:40. > :03:43.the company. There will also be some training opportunities.

:03:43. > :03:49.The water supply of Guernsey's Princess Elizabeth Hospital will be

:03:49. > :03:52.turned off this Sunday to treat bacteria found in the system. It

:03:52. > :03:55.was revealed on Monday that a higher level of Legionella bacteria

:03:55. > :03:58.has been found in the hospital's water supply. In the next few days,

:03:58. > :04:06.all water storage tanks and pipes will be disinfected. No cases of

:04:06. > :04:11.related illness have been found. With university tuition fees set to

:04:11. > :04:14.rocket next year, it is hoped more people will opt to study for a

:04:14. > :04:18.degree in the Channel Islands. Highlands College in Jersey has

:04:18. > :04:28.been running degree courses, but it has plans to expand its offering,

:04:28. > :04:31.giving local students away to avoid debts. Katie Foley is studying

:04:31. > :04:38.childhood studies and decided to stay in Jersey rather than going to

:04:38. > :04:41.the UK. I did not want to leave the island. I get experience with

:04:41. > :04:49.Jersey legislation and we learn about the chairs the education

:04:49. > :04:53.system. This is the learning and resources centre. Over 150 students

:04:53. > :04:57.study nine different courses, are choosing to stay here rather than

:04:57. > :05:03.go to the UK. Bosses at the college also impressed, they want to

:05:03. > :05:08.increase the number of courses on offer. We are looking to develop a

:05:08. > :05:13.range of new programmes. Particularly sports management,

:05:13. > :05:19.events management and so on. That will enhance our programme.

:05:19. > :05:24.Christine is also studying for a degree. She opted to stay in Jersey

:05:24. > :05:28.and says it has opened up opportunities. I have been out of

:05:28. > :05:35.education for a long time. The way things are done, all the

:05:35. > :05:40.assignments are very different. I have had a lot of help. The island

:05:40. > :05:45.has bought over Sir Dian Hopkin to see how the college can expand. The

:05:45. > :05:49.he says that degrees are just as good as those in the UK.

:05:49. > :05:54.recognise the nation of a degree is changing. The old idea that it was

:05:54. > :05:59.something that somebody of 18 did, mostly an academic subject, that is

:05:59. > :06:03.changing, because we recognise in the new economy we need the highest

:06:03. > :06:09.possible skills. The courses could be available within the next three

:06:09. > :06:16.years. For Katie and Christine it is back to work to achieve a degree

:06:16. > :06:21.on their doorstep. In is not yet known whether a piece

:06:21. > :06:25.of land in Jersey will be turned into a memorial garden for the six

:06:25. > :06:29.victims of the St Helier stabbings. The Constable wants to use this

:06:29. > :06:35.land in Havre de Pas. At a parish meeting, Britain has agreed to buy

:06:35. > :06:41.the land, costing 15,000. They called for more consultation. Six

:06:41. > :06:46.people died in a knife attack in Victoria Crescent in August.

:06:46. > :06:51.A Jersey man who had been suffering from a rare disease has died. John

:06:52. > :06:58.Sharp was on -- one of only 200 people with Lafora, which affected

:06:58. > :07:01.his speech and memory, leaving him unable to walk or eat. His family

:07:01. > :07:07.and friends have raised thousands for research into the condition.

:07:07. > :07:13.They will continue. You are watching the BBC in the

:07:13. > :07:16.Channel Islands. In Spotlight, the alarming research that shows the

:07:16. > :07:25.effect of social match working on the attitudes of young people to

:07:25. > :07:34.relationships. -- network. You might pick it is getting colder,

:07:34. > :07:40.but what is it like to brave the extremes of the South Pole? One man

:07:40. > :07:45.is an expert. In fact he is an record-breaking.

:07:45. > :07:49.Antarctica, one of the harshest environments. One man from Guernsey

:07:49. > :07:57.has managed to con kick it in record time. Jason De Carteret

:07:57. > :08:03.broke the world record -- he has managed to conquer it. He arrived

:08:03. > :08:12.with his team in under 40 hours. The challengers are massive. The

:08:12. > :08:21.cold is a huge factor. Just so via weather. The A-level themselves out

:08:21. > :08:25.-- just the weather. They left for themselves out. We got to the point

:08:25. > :08:32.where the station manager came at to say, congratulations, you are at

:08:32. > :08:37.the South Pole. I stopped the stopwatch and it came up with the

:08:37. > :08:44.total time of 39 hours, 54 minutes. That was when I thought, we have

:08:44. > :08:49.smashed this. But the adventure took its toll on the card and this

:08:49. > :08:54.week he is back in Guernsey to pick up spare parts -- on the vehicle.

:08:54. > :08:59.This part came round. It was all right for a while, but not as good

:08:59. > :09:03.as I needed it for the rest of the time. Heaney sit to be in good

:09:03. > :09:10.shape because he is swapping Antarctica for Africa to see how it

:09:10. > :09:14.fares there. I am sure the children would like

:09:14. > :09:19.to see snow like that here. We will to see snow like that here. We will

:09:19. > :09:27.find out what it will be like. A cold weekend ahead for the

:09:27. > :09:35.Channel Islands with temperatures taking a drop. By Monday, six or

:09:35. > :09:39.seven degrees. The change comes from the north. It will move

:09:39. > :09:49.through the Channel Islands and as it moves southwards, it opens the

:09:49. > :09:52.

:09:52. > :09:57.door to colder air. It will be still, and quite chilly. We will

:09:57. > :10:03.have a cold direction, meaning the drop in temperature. Tonight, cloud.

:10:03. > :10:12.It might give some drizzle. The winds becoming more fully.

:10:12. > :10:17.Temperatures by the morning around six degrees. -- becoming northerly.

:10:17. > :10:23.We will have north east winds tomorrow and nine degrees will be

:10:23. > :10:33.the maximum temperature. For the coastal waters, this is the

:10:33. > :10:38.

:10:38. > :10:44.forecast... Surfing, not much with high pressure. It is quiet at sea.

:10:44. > :10:51.The waves will be up to two feet. We can look at the forecast all the

:10:51. > :10:56.way through and including the start of next week. A frosty start is

:10:56. > :11:03.possible on Saturday morning. The breeze will pick up on Saturday. It

:11:03. > :11:06.will be even fresher on Sunday. The temperatures will be affected by

:11:06. > :11:11.the wind chill. You will need to wrap up warmly over the weekend. A

:11:11. > :11:15.cold day on Monday, but fine. This cold day on Monday, but fine. This

:11:15. > :11:19.cold day on Monday, but fine. This is the summary.

:11:19. > :11:22.Finally, a group of singers from the Channel Islands are heading to

:11:23. > :11:32.New York for a concert to celebrate Martin Luther King Day. We caught

:11:33. > :11:38.

:11:38. > :11:42.up with them earlier. The Guernsey Choral and Orchestral Society will

:11:42. > :11:49.be part of an international chorus performing a number called The

:11:49. > :11:53.Peacemakers in Carny D Hall. They are excited. I have never travelled

:11:53. > :11:57.a great deal. The thought of seeing America is fantastic. And to do

:11:57. > :12:02.something as exciting as this will be great, we will join in with

:12:02. > :12:08.choirs from all over the world. I think the composer is actually

:12:08. > :12:13.going to conduct the peace. A bet it will be cold. That is all
