:00:16. > :00:21.Good evening. Coming up on tonight's programme:

:00:21. > :00:23.A 30 % drop in two years, but is Guernsey really safer? Plus: Why we

:00:23. > :00:25.will finally see the hidden treasures onboard a 300-year-old

:00:25. > :00:35.shipwreck. And the islander preparing to shine

:00:35. > :00:42.

:00:42. > :00:46.on the international sporting stage There has been a significant drop

:00:46. > :00:49.in crime in Guernsey. That is at least according to the latest

:00:49. > :00:52.figures from Guernsey Police. They show a fall of almost 30 % in

:00:52. > :01:02.reported crimes over the last two years. But do the figures tell the

:01:02. > :01:04.

:01:04. > :01:08.full story? A criminal damage, shoplifting and

:01:08. > :01:13.burglary, all crimes which, according to the latest figures,

:01:13. > :01:19.are happening less in Guernsey. Last year more than two dozen --

:01:19. > :01:25.less than two dozen crimes were reported. That is a 29 % drop on

:01:25. > :01:33.2009. We are focusing on disrupting and detecting criminality. We are

:01:33. > :01:37.dealing with the repeat offenders and are giving support to repeat

:01:37. > :01:41.victims and are working too hard and some of the consequences.

:01:41. > :01:45.statistics are going in the right direction, but what needs to happen

:01:45. > :01:50.now to make sure this continues? There is a huge amount of work to

:01:50. > :01:54.do. I would like to increase detection rates and I would like to

:01:54. > :02:04.see further reductions in crime. The figures are positive but this

:02:04. > :02:07.

:02:07. > :02:10.is just a snapshot and it will take a few years to get the full picture.

:02:10. > :02:19.And you can hear more from the Chief Officer of Guernsey Police on

:02:19. > :02:24.BBC Guernsey tomorrow morning just after 8:00am. Jersey is to follow

:02:24. > :02:29.Guernsey by adding new pictures onto a cigarette packets. Some of

:02:29. > :02:33.the images we will show you will be quite graphic. Some retailers can

:02:33. > :02:39.only show packets with pictures like this, with people with rotting

:02:39. > :02:44.teeth and people having open-heart surgery. Guernsey's Director of

:02:44. > :02:49.Public Health is now urging hotels and businesses to check their water

:02:49. > :02:54.systems. Chlorinated water was a flushed through remaining areas of

:02:54. > :03:02.the Princess Elizabeth Hospital over the weekend after unacceptable

:03:02. > :03:04.levels of bacteria were found. There is no need for women who have

:03:04. > :03:08.had a breast enlargement using the controversial PIP implants to rush

:03:08. > :03:11.and get them removed. That is the advice from a new plastic surgery

:03:11. > :03:15.firm in Guernsey. It is not clear how many women in the island have

:03:15. > :03:17.had the implants, but it is thought it could be anywhere between 20 and

:03:17. > :03:20.50. The company recently offered free check-ups to anyone with

:03:20. > :03:27.concerns. The there is no rush or urgency but many women are

:03:27. > :03:31.concerned and they want the impact to be removed. I cannot give them

:03:31. > :03:35.the assurance they want because the data is not there. It is

:03:35. > :03:38.understandable that they just want these removed.

:03:38. > :03:41.18th century treasures lying on the seabed off Alderney could soon be

:03:41. > :03:43.on display in British Museums. The wreck of HMS Victory was discovered

:03:43. > :03:46.three years ago by an American exploration company. But now the

:03:46. > :03:55.MoD has agreed to let the Maritime Heritage Foundation manage the

:03:55. > :03:58.sunken ship and its treasures. It has been sitting at the bottom

:03:58. > :04:04.of the English Channel for over 300 years, but HMS Victory was only

:04:04. > :04:12.discovered three years ago by this deep sea exploration company. But

:04:12. > :04:15.it was not finders keepers. The Ministry of Defence have now agreed

:04:15. > :04:18.for a charitable foundation to undertake the management of the

:04:18. > :04:22.wreck site that has captivated local historians. It is nice that

:04:22. > :04:26.something is happening. It looked like it could have dragged on for

:04:26. > :04:30.years and years but a trust has been formed now and an agreement

:04:30. > :04:37.has been made with the British government. There are many tannins

:04:37. > :04:46.laughed but there is not much intact within it the structure.

:04:46. > :04:50.Much of it is on the seabed somewhere.

:04:51. > :05:00.A crew of over 1,000 went down with HMS Victory when it sank in a storm

:05:01. > :05:12.

:05:12. > :05:15.in 1744. In a statement, the MoD However, Alderney's Maritime Trust

:05:15. > :05:21.is concerned the recovery of the wreck could mean her historically

:05:21. > :05:25.significant artefacts may be sold to the highest bidder. But Lord

:05:25. > :05:28.Lingfield hopes by the end of this year some of the navy warship's

:05:28. > :05:31.deep sea secrets that have been on the seabed around the Channel

:05:31. > :05:34.Islands for centuries will be brought up to the surface and put

:05:34. > :05:35.on display in British Museums. You are watching the BBC in the

:05:35. > :05:38.Channel Islands. Later in Spotlight:

:05:38. > :05:40.Pictures of a bygone era, but when? The mystery surrounding these

:05:40. > :05:45.photos. Turning to local sport now.

:05:45. > :05:48.Let us start with rugby. Jersey have gone five points clear at the

:05:48. > :05:58.top of National League One after a 17-12 win over Cinderford. The

:05:58. > :06:01.islanders scored three tries. Elsewhere, their title-challengers,

:06:01. > :06:04.Fylde and Rosslyn Park, both lost. And Guernsey Rugby scored an

:06:04. > :06:07.impressive away win at the weekend. The Green and Whites beat Haywards

:06:07. > :06:09.Heath, pushing their opponents down into 10th place in the London One

:06:10. > :06:17.South table. Guernsey currently sit in second, just five points behind

:06:17. > :06:20.leaders Chichester. Guernsey FC suffered their first

:06:21. > :06:30.home loss in a league game at the weekend. They were taking on the

:06:31. > :06:31.

:06:31. > :06:35.Hampshire side Eversley who are third in the league.

:06:35. > :06:39.The drums were beating four or a Guernsey victory at the home crowd

:06:39. > :06:44.were hoping to see the Queen lie- ins consolidate their position at

:06:44. > :06:49.the top of the lead in their first home match of the year. -- Green

:06:49. > :06:58.Lions. However, it was the visitors who struck first, seizing on this

:06:58. > :07:04.opportunity. And it was not until the first -- second half before

:07:04. > :07:08.another goal was scored, but it was Eversley who extended their lead.

:07:08. > :07:14.Guernsey soon retaliated with Ross Allen winning a penalty before

:07:14. > :07:20.putting it away to bring the Green Lions back. As the minutes ticked

:07:20. > :07:24.away, some could not watch as the match neared its conclusion. But

:07:24. > :07:31.there was still some drama laughed when the referee awarded Eversley a

:07:31. > :07:37.penalty. -- laughed. And the striker put it away Comley. Despite

:07:37. > :07:41.that, Guernsey they fought back, but it was not enough and Eversley

:07:41. > :07:46.held on to win. There had been rumours that Ross Allen could be

:07:46. > :07:52.signed by a professional football club but he refused to comment.

:07:52. > :07:57.They are has been loads of speculation flying around about you.

:07:58. > :08:03.-- there has to bend. What are your thoughts about next season? We will

:08:03. > :08:08.have to see. I am just loving my football. I want us to get a

:08:08. > :08:16.promotion and get that sorted as soon as possible. I cannot make a

:08:16. > :08:21.comment. We have lost endgame. So what? It is another challenge. --

:08:21. > :08:27.we have lost eight game. Guernsey may have lost in front of

:08:27. > :08:31.a home crowd, but they are still top of the table.

:08:31. > :08:36.We are looking ahead to a huge event in the sporting calendar.

:08:36. > :08:40.There are only six months to go until the 2012 Olympics, and many

:08:40. > :08:45.other our athletes will be getting ready, but they are not the only

:08:45. > :08:51.ones. One of our local athlete has been chosen as a line judge during

:08:51. > :08:55.the Games. She has been a volleyball player

:08:55. > :09:01.for 30 years and now her quick thinking in the sport has got her

:09:01. > :09:06.through to the Olympics. Diedre first set her sights on being a

:09:06. > :09:12.referee at the London Games back in 2009. I have loved the alembics all

:09:12. > :09:19.my life. London 2012, you will never get another opportunity. --

:09:19. > :09:24.the Olympics. It was 1988, that was the last time they were held in

:09:24. > :09:30.Britain, and you would be a fool not to go and do it again. Out of

:09:30. > :09:35.600 people across the UK, Diedre is one of the 24 line judges chosen.

:09:36. > :09:42.But she only found out last October, when she was at home with her son.

:09:42. > :09:47.I looked at it and I thought it was a bill. My husband said that I

:09:47. > :09:52.should open it because it might be the letter. So I opened it and I

:09:52. > :10:02.think I was a bit shocked. He was jumping all over the kitchen. It

:10:02. > :10:06.was lovely, actually. Really lovely. With the balls being head at just

:10:06. > :10:14.over 100 miles per hour at the Olympics, she will keep her eyes

:10:14. > :10:21.firmly on the line, while we keep our eyes on her.

:10:21. > :10:26.Good on you, Diedre. Now for a look at the weather.

:10:26. > :10:33.Unsettled across the Channel Islands. Relatively mild air for

:10:33. > :10:37.the last few days, but now it is going to get a bit colder. After a

:10:37. > :10:42.fair amount of clear sky today, there is a lot more cloud on the

:10:42. > :10:50.weather front as it braces across the Atlantic to give us some patchy

:10:50. > :10:54.rain. -- races across. Temperatures tomorrow will be mild, at around 11

:10:54. > :10:58.degrees. The cold front will move through Wednesday night into

:10:58. > :11:04.Thursday and once that happens the temperatures will drop. It will

:11:04. > :11:09.become quite breezy through the day. Tonight the cloud is quite

:11:09. > :11:16.extensive. Fairly light winds initially, but they will pick up

:11:16. > :11:21.tomorrow. Westerly winds and some outbreaks of rain and not much will

:11:21. > :11:29.change throughout the afternoon. We will keep a lot of cloud. As for

:11:29. > :11:33.the coastal waters, the winds will be from the west throughout the day.

:11:33. > :11:43.There will be occasional drizzle with moderate visibility. Times of

:11:43. > :11:46.

:11:46. > :11:51.For most of the beaches, it will be rather messy throughout the day,

:11:51. > :11:55.two or a 3 ft off messy. Here is the forecast for the rest of the

:11:55. > :12:02.week. We are between weather systems on Wednesday and Thursday.

:12:02. > :12:05.There will be a glimpse of sunshine coming through. Then it will be

:12:05. > :12:11.replaced by colder air and a scattering of showers which will

:12:11. > :12:16.stay with us until Friday and the northerly winds will feel quite

:12:16. > :12:20.cold. Now for the summary.
