:00:13. > :00:19.Good evening, welcomed. The top stories.

:00:19. > :00:21.Guernsey States scrap the housing laws as preparations begin for a

:00:21. > :00:27.new motor station to control the population.

:00:27. > :00:30.The future at last for the former Odeon cinema in St Helier, as it is

:00:30. > :00:34.sold to the Freedom Church. Turning professional, the local

:00:34. > :00:44.woman off to play the beautiful game in one of Scandinavia's

:00:44. > :00:49.

:00:49. > :00:56.game in one of Scandinavia's Guernsey States has agreed to move

:00:56. > :01:00.ahead to changes to how they manage their population. The housing gulls

:01:00. > :01:05.will be scrapped and a new system of permits could be introduced. It

:01:05. > :01:10.will also give people who work there the right to stay. But there

:01:10. > :01:13.are still -- there is still a long way to go before any definite

:01:13. > :01:18.alternative is decided on. With more than 62,000 people

:01:18. > :01:22.already living in Guernsey, and limited space, the population just

:01:22. > :01:27.cannot keep growing. Coming up with a way of controlling the size and

:01:27. > :01:37.make-up of it is no easy task. Some politicians would say it is a

:01:37. > :01:48.

:01:48. > :01:53.It is difficult, because everybody has got their own view. Sometimes,

:01:53. > :01:58.they see being a local as being here for hundreds of years, some

:01:58. > :02:02.see it as after 15 years. Exploring the views of the politicians was

:02:02. > :02:09.what the debate was all about. There are lots of ideas, such as

:02:09. > :02:13.work permits, but there are no firm proposals. The current group will

:02:13. > :02:18.look at all the information that has gone through the debate, put it

:02:18. > :02:22.together in some form, so that the future group will be able to take

:02:22. > :02:27.the matter forward. The open market took a hit when it was suggested

:02:27. > :02:32.the review could change it. Even though it has been ruled out, some

:02:32. > :02:37.people are concerned it could take a while to bounce back. We will see

:02:37. > :02:41.what the reaction is in the market. Will people pay the premiums for

:02:42. > :02:45.the open market? I cannot answer that, time will tell. It will be

:02:45. > :02:49.end of the year before the state come up with the final plans. We

:02:49. > :02:54.wonder whether the mission has come up with a mission that works or

:02:55. > :02:59.whether it will just please everybody in the process.

:02:59. > :03:03.It is one of Jersey's most iconic and controversial sites, plans to

:03:03. > :03:07.knock it down were scuppered, but it is set for a new lease of life.

:03:07. > :03:15.The former Odeon cinema has been sold for 1 million, but not to a

:03:15. > :03:21.builder or developer, but to a church.

:03:21. > :03:27.2004, and the famous Odeon sign is taken down for the last time. It

:03:27. > :03:33.reopened again in 2005 as the New Forum cinema, only to close its

:03:33. > :03:37.doors again three years ago. This was the vision. A development of

:03:37. > :03:44.shops, offices and flats. But that idea was rejected, because of

:03:45. > :03:48.planning concerns. But now, after months of uncertainty, planning

:03:48. > :03:53.applications and planning rejections, the Odeon building is

:03:53. > :04:00.set to be transformed into this. Soon, this will be our new home,

:04:00. > :04:08.the former Odeon building is to become the Freedom Centre. We have

:04:08. > :04:11.been on a journey for many years, out drink many different facilities,

:04:12. > :04:17.culminating in the school for the last eight years. We see the centre

:04:17. > :04:22.ranging from a cafe and restaurant in the front, with a performance

:04:22. > :04:26.auditorium, the Centre for Creative Arts. But of the owners selling it

:04:26. > :04:31.because they could not get their way? It was not sold out of

:04:31. > :04:35.frustration, it was going through a process, the listing was retained

:04:36. > :04:41.last year, and it was one of the options available. Finally, a plan

:04:41. > :04:49.has been made. It has been a long time in coming, but the future of

:04:49. > :04:54.one of Jersey's most historic and important sites seems to be secured.

:04:54. > :04:58.Small businesses are becoming increasingly vulnerable to theft, a

:04:58. > :05:02.warning from Jersey Police. Although few homes were burgled and

:05:02. > :05:08.2011, the overall number of break- ins. Of the previous year. Most

:05:08. > :05:12.were sheds, carriages, building sites and food kiosks. This cafe

:05:12. > :05:17.was broken into last year. The police have formed a special unit

:05:17. > :05:22.to clamp down on this type of crime. Burglary, as well as the financial

:05:22. > :05:25.impact, it has an emotional impact. If you have been broken into. We

:05:25. > :05:30.are talking about a small group of people responsible for the majority

:05:30. > :05:37.of these burglaries that take place. We are looking to focus our

:05:37. > :05:39.attentions on these people, and bring them to justice.

:05:39. > :05:45.A national conservation organisation is encouraging

:05:45. > :05:48.Guernsey to introduce full sewage treatment. The Marine Conservation

:05:48. > :05:52.Society says while many Guernsey beaches are included in the guide,

:05:52. > :05:55.some are not even considered, because of the potential risk of

:05:55. > :06:00.sewage pollution. The group says it has a policy of encouraging

:06:00. > :06:05.treatment. This week, we are looking ahead to

:06:05. > :06:11.the Olympics in London. But six months to go, two of our athletes

:06:11. > :06:15.are looking to do more than qualify. They are going for gold.

:06:15. > :06:19.It has taken years to build the Olympic Stadium. But now there are

:06:19. > :06:23.just six months until athletes from the Channel Islands could be

:06:23. > :06:28.competing in the greatest games on earth. Many still have to qualify

:06:28. > :06:35.to represent Great Britain, but two who are not only confident of a

:06:35. > :06:38.place but are also tipped to win a medal, Carl Hester and Beckie

:06:38. > :06:43.Herbert. London will be the fourth Olympics that Carl Hester has

:06:43. > :06:47.competed at, he has never won a medal before, but he is in good

:06:47. > :06:57.form, having won silver at the European Championships. Thinking

:06:57. > :07:06.about getting a medal is always at the front of your mind. The chances

:07:06. > :07:11.should be high. As a team, we are coming into the Olympics, where

:07:11. > :07:15.people are expecting us to take the gold medal. We won by the biggest

:07:15. > :07:20.margin ever seen. The women's hockey team is in a strong position

:07:20. > :07:25.to compete for a place on the podium in London. One of the squad

:07:26. > :07:34.members his Jersey's Beckie Herbert. Six months to go, it is an exciting

:07:35. > :07:38.time for any athlete. Although it is really exciting, it is also

:07:38. > :07:43.pretty tough, there is a lot of pressure, we have got a squad with

:07:43. > :07:47.nearly twice as many people as there are places, so we are aware

:07:47. > :07:50.that there are no guarantees that any of us will be out there, at the

:07:51. > :07:55.Olympics. But if I keep training hard, and will give myself the best

:07:55. > :07:59.shot I can. Only a handful of Channel Islanders have won Olympic

:07:59. > :08:08.medals, but with them go the dreams and hopes of not only the islands

:08:08. > :08:11.but the whole nation. A woman from Jersey left the island

:08:11. > :08:18.this week to start a new life as a professional footballer, and it is

:08:18. > :08:24.all down to a chance encounter at the Island Games.

:08:24. > :08:28.Giving her all, Jodie Botterill is going on to bigger and better

:08:28. > :08:33.things. She is joining one of the biggest professional teams in

:08:33. > :08:39.Scandinavia. It is all thanks to her performance at the Island Games.

:08:39. > :08:43.We played against them, and the coach spoke to me, told me how well

:08:43. > :08:49.I played, and I should look into going over there to play. When I

:08:49. > :08:54.get back to Jersey, the J FA hot May, and their coach asked me to go

:08:54. > :08:59.over for a trial. As well as a sporting challenge, she has a new

:08:59. > :09:07.life, culture and language to get used to. I have been told there is

:09:07. > :09:11.a time in winter where there does not have any daylight. The coach

:09:11. > :09:16.said it is a good time to learn the language! The team will miss her,

:09:16. > :09:23.but it is clear her team-mates and coach offal for her. The last year,

:09:23. > :09:27.she has taken on much more of a professional approach to her career.

:09:27. > :09:32.It has culminated in the opportunity she has now. Whinges

:09:32. > :09:36.the play her new team in the next Island Games, let's hope she

:09:36. > :09:40.remembers who gave her the push she needed -- when Jersey play her new

:09:40. > :09:46.team. Jersey Rugby Club have a new weapon

:09:46. > :09:56.in their battle for promotion. They have signed Jason Gething from the

:09:56. > :10:00.club that won National League One Some cold weather tonight and

:10:00. > :10:05.tomorrow. We expect some showers to deny it. More of them to come

:10:05. > :10:10.through the day tomorrow, though not quite as heavy. In the middle

:10:10. > :10:13.of the day, frequent showers, before they fade away. We have got

:10:13. > :10:18.low pressure, it is quite a long way away from the Channel Islands,

:10:18. > :10:23.but it has an influence into northern France. It is less windy

:10:23. > :10:28.by the time we get a lunchtime tomorrow. Into the weekend, we have

:10:28. > :10:32.an area of high pressure moving closer. Towards the end of the day,

:10:32. > :10:37.that allows a warm front to approach from the West. For the

:10:37. > :10:43.moment, some clear skies, and it is quite a cold one. Those brisk winds

:10:43. > :10:47.will move to a north-westerly. Showers until dawn. The

:10:47. > :10:54.temperatures start at four or five degrees. Tomorrow it is not a bad

:10:54. > :11:04.start. It will cloud over somewhat, with showers. But the wind is brisk

:11:04. > :11:19.

:11:19. > :11:29.and from the West or north-west, The surfing is likely to be quite

:11:29. > :11:32.

:11:32. > :11:38.On Saturday, we can expect a bright, fine day. A cold start on Saturday

:11:38. > :11:43.morning, potentially with a touch of frost. More cloud on Saturday
